Start Menu Has Suddenly Changed Size

Question: Start Menu Has Suddenly Changed Size

Previously when I would click on the start button, the menu that appeared would reach about half way up the screen. Today, however, it goes all the way to the top of the screen. I checked the buttons properties and all there is as it has always been plus the menu has the same amount of icons on it as usual. Also, the "Most Used Programs" part of the menu is blank after every reboot.

Can anyone shed some light as to what is going on?

Cheers.

Preferred Solution: Start Menu Has Suddenly Changed Size

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have you run spyware and virus scans recently? If so, with what software? Running scandisk would be a good idea if you havent run it already too.

Hi there folks,

I sat down this mroning to install a couple of educational softwares etc. I realized that certain settings have changed and I do not know how to get these back to their original state:

1. The font on my desktop icons and Windows Explorer are different (smaller and different style).
2. The headers on Outlook messages are huge. The size of most pop up messages are huge too (e.g. reminder pop ups from Outlook). When I open the 'options' window or any others within Outlook, the window size is the same as before, but the text is huge and bolded, and even goes out of the borders of the window (and hence is incomplete).

What setting could have changed is a mystery. How do I get this back?? I have tried to do a Office XP Repair (from the Programs Uninstall section). That did not work.

Please suggest something!
Thanks.

After power manager a upgrade yesterday the thickness of my start menu has increased in windows7. I have tried to change the size in "Power Manager Gauge menu size" in Options, Power Manager. But it does not make any difference... It is very annoying that my start menu has got thicker than it used to be because of this icon change. If I remove the power manager from the toolbar it goes back to the slim normal height. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Hey all, after using AlienwareGUI for a while to swap to a theme I uninstalled it after a while. The result made the IE icon on the start menu the IE6 icon. I've gone to the quick launch IE icon and changing that icon back to IE7 but it still didn't fix the start menu one. Anyone know how to get it back?

And yeah, doesn't look like much of a problem but I go nuts about it. Probably because im a perfectionist and every other IE icon has the IE7 one. <_<

Uninstall the software from Uninstall Programs and it should revert back to default.

Weird one this (aren't they all!). I've just removed some ransomware from an XP computer and everything seems back to normal except that the Start menu is in French! Everything else is in English; My Computer, Control Panel, even part of the Start menu - the menu itself says 'demarrer', Control Panel is ''Panneau de configuration', All Programs is ''Tous les programs' & the log-off/shut-down are also in French (though once 'shutdown is selected, the logoff/restart/shutdown selections are in English), also 'run', 'help'. 'search' are all in English. All control panel/regional settings are in English & I cannot find a mention of French anywhere else.Any ideas would be appreciated. We can live with the odd bit of French so don't wan to do anything major that could screw it completely.Edit: I've run sfc and that made no changes/difference. Also searched the registry for 'french' and 'francais', just to see if that gave any clues and I couldn't see anything unusual."I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us..." I was editing some video when the application crashed, i was not too worried about this as sometimes it happens, so i did a ctrl, alt and delete to end the process, then i remembered i had downloaded a trail of 'dvd creator 6' and decided to install it to see what it was like, so i unpacked it (as it was a zip file) and installed it, it went through the process ok, when it finished it asked if i wanted to open the application so i clicked on 'yes' but it would not open i went to the desktop and clicked on the shortcut but still it would not open, i then went to 'start, all programs' and tried to open it there but no luck, everything else associated with this application like user guide would open but not the application it self so i decided to restart my pc and i noticed the o/s loading screens was slower than usual and when it did get to my desktop the desktop background picture loaded as usual but all the application and taskbar took ages to load, anyway i tried dvd creator 6 but still no luck so i uninstalled it, then i noticed all my flv. and vob files had changed from the usual icon to one that can only be described as like a page with the corner folded over a box on this page with a blue border at the top with 3 little white boxes on the right in this blue border and in the centre of the box 3 underlined images (which i could not make out) clicking on these will not open them in their associated applications or play in any media player, luckily i ... Hiya guys,
I've just done a fresh install of Windows 10 on a new build.
I noticed there are a couple of bits I can't seem to get back to how they were before, last time it was the free upgrade from win7, this time it was a clean install via windows 10 media creation tool.

I've attached a screenshot of how my start menu looks now, before reinstalling I had the power, settings and file explorer at the bottom of the start menu as a list, along with 'all apps', which would open the A-Z list of apps.
As you can see now, the power etc are now icons on the left, with all the apps as a permanent presence next to them.

It's not a huge issue, but something that's frustrating me that I can't figure out how to change it back, I don't launch apps from the A-Z so i'd rather not have it there.

Has this changed in a recent update or something? My PC was without internet for a few months until today so maybe I missed a change.

I have checked and I have the latest build of windows.

Thanks, Mark.

Hello everyone!

I have a unique problem, I found a few random posts about it but each one had no replies for support.

After installing the recent fall update for the Creators Update on October 17, my start menu has automatically changed to a very light shade of the taskbar color.

I understand it's naturally lighter, but mine has turned extremely light grey compared to the dark taskbar. Messing around with all the colors and themes does nothing. Changing my taskbar color will then change my start menu the same but it will turn the color to a very very light shade of the taskbar.

It's very strange indeed. Did the creators update naturally lighten up the start menu color? Or is there anyways to manually edit the start menu color only to get close to the same shade as the taskbar? I could try posting screen shots, because normal taskbars are usually blackish while the start menu is very similar, yet mine is now extremely light grey.

I"m not sure what I did, but my desktop has changed. I tried to attach a screenshot, but don't think I did it correctly.

Here's what it looks like when I touch the start button.
-My start menu items are floating sort of to the right, in the position they normall are.
-However, this is where it gets wierd.
-Veritically, on the left
1. Start button
2. a button which brings up All Programs
3. Power button
<large blank space>
4. All the way at the top, a button which when clicked shows most used apps.

Hello everyone.
Today I tried Windows 10... it's not bad at all but for the moment I prefer to stick with Windows 7.
So I downgraded and everything is fine a part from a small detail in the start menu...

As you can see my Windows 7 is in Italian but there are three entries that are in English.
Documents-Pictures-Music instead of Documenti-Immagini-Musica.
All the settings in control panel are on "Italian" so I don't know why this happened.

Any way to fix it?

Thanks.

I thought I'd change my start up menu so not so many programs opened at start up. Thinking this would be easy I just stopped a few programs that I thought would speed up my start up. I did that thinking that it was easy!!
Now I have lost all programs and internet connection from the laptop and can't do anything with it.
Questions: Do I need to do something easy to bring it back (I tried system restore ) It doesn't have anything I can find to restore it to.
Question: Would I need to reload windows 7? or can I do it an easier way.

The last Windows 10 update changed my start menu, so now the "all apps" list is there and open on the first click on the start menu icon; and it took the "power" and "settings" options and turned them into icons only, no words. I'm not using the full screen start menu.
How do I get the old one back---labels on power and settings etc., all apps list not showing up unless I ask for it?

Has anyone figured out how to increase the font size and/or font type in the start menu? All the regular "personalize" options are basically for desktop and text and borders and the like, but nothing for the menu itself.

These old eyes are hurtin' !!!!

Turning the magnifier on is NOT practical. There's got to be some hack (probably a bitmap) to adjust this.

I believe this is a complaint of many.

Many thanks......

Suddenly her desktop/start menu reverted from the new Windows 10 start menu to the old Windows 8.1 desktop. I did some searching and supposedly if you go through control panel, appearance, taskbar and start menu properties there should be a start menu tab where you select which one you want. How can I get her desktop/start menu back to the standard Windows 10 style?

While my wife was running Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 the icons for all programs pinned to the Taskbar (and on the start menu as well) turned into the blank page icon. Trying to use properties to change the icons back to their correct icons does not work. I can go through the process, but it doesn't change the display any. This is a user specific problem, because the Guest user still displays all the icons correctly, but I am at a loss as to what now to try and concerns about the possibility of a worm or virus even though I run Microsoft's Essential Security and periodically scan with other virus scanners.

is there a utility/hack to freely adjust the size of the explorer Start Menu? not just by adjusting the height of it by 'changing the size of recent programs' under Start Menu Properties, but freely resizing all four borders in any direction.

not by using a start menu/taskbar replacement.

Figure 1 shows an example desktop, this is currently achievable. the menu is already at max height for aero themes. the gap on top remains even after u remove ur aero user frame. or maybe because the frame is still there, just that it is set to transparent i dunno. also note there is no taskbar on this desktop, it has been permanently disabled.

Figure 1

Figure 2 shows a hypothetical result (of course i roughly used paint to achieve this).

Figure 2

disregard the badly sized start orb lol, i may have to move/mod the start orb with some utility later. if the bottom border is achievable, the orb would block part of the search window.

Hey guys,

Was just wondering, is its possible to change the Tile size for the Start Menu? My tiles by default are pretty small, I can stack up 6 tiles in each "group". I've seen videos and screenshots where people have their tiles much larger, they can stack up to 3 and in general I think larger tiles make the Metro UI look much better. So anyone have ideas on how to do this?

~CrAcKzZZ

Answer:Changing the Start Menu Tile Size

The only way I know is, right click on the tile and you'll see an option to make it larger or smaller, depends on what size they are when right clicking. Not all tiles seem to have the same options though, dont know why that is.

I've done some research on this, and there have been variations of the question asked, but I never found anything truly helpful.

I was wondering if there was any way to modify the size of the text/icons in the Start Menu (other than choosing the from preset Large/Small options). I wish to do this so that I can squeeze them together a little more closely in order to fit more on the list.

Disabling the text from being bold would help, too.

I already know there are alternatives to having more items immediately on the Start Menu (such as taskbar and desktop toolbars, etc). However, I'd like to see if we can figure out a way to edit the Start Menu items themselves.

I do have Windowblinds installed, and I'm sure the skinning process is able to modify it to some degree, although I haven't yet found any overrides that will allow me to customize it beyond what the skins are set to do.

Anyway, let me know what you think and if you want to help me figure this out.

Thanks!

Answer:Change the size of items in Start Menu?

You can't adjust the font or text. But If you right click the task bar/Properties/Start Menu. make sure you're in Classic Start Menu/Customize. Put a check box in Scroll Programs, you can fit more items in the All Programs list.

I had Outlook 2007, Internet Explorer 8, and CYMA (an accounting software) running. IE crashed, I reopened. A few minutes later, all three programs crashed, all desktop icons were gone, and about thirty pop-ups warning about registry errors came up (unfortunately I did not write down the errors). I attempted a restart, upon which the system indicated that a registry error occurred, but had been corrected. At this time, I noticed that no icons appeared on the desktop. When I selected the start menu to restart again, no programs or short cuts were present in the menu. Under all programs, the folders were present but all are labeled "empty" (including folders within Accessories, such as System Tools). I was also unable to right or left click on the desktop or to drag and drop anything onto the desktop. Oddly, the task bar was present along with some programs that run at startup (Trend Micro Security Agent, Pervasive, LogMeIn, Adobe Updater).

I attempted to restart in safe mode to the same results. I am able to access all files and programs through the explore function. I also checked the logs and there are no errors showing around the time of the original program crash. I have been able to restore some of the programs/short cuts to the start menu, specifically, IE, Outlook, My Computer, My Documents, Control Panel... Read more

Hi folks,

I recently ran into frustration trying to save or make new any files in the root C:\ directory, with Windows7 Home Premium being set by default, of course, to not allow this. I did a cursory skim of some information online about changing these settings, and made some changes a bit hastily. Specifically, for the C:\ drive I took ownership of every subdirectory and gave my account full permissions under security. Annoyingly, this didn't fix the original issue of saving to that drive (which I no longer care about anyway), and it caused (at least) two new problems. Now my start menu has far fewer listings than it used to have; I imagine some programs were listed in it based on the previous permissions. I tried to do a system recovery, both through the OS and with a recovery disc, and that does not work either. It lists restore points, but after restarting it says that the restore was unable to complete.

So, my questions are thus:

Can I fix the permissions and ownership of just the restore directory and program components, enough to run one, and revert?

Or, failing that, is there a way to undo recent ownership changes made? I poked around in the Event Viewer, but it's not laid out very clearly.

It's ok if it's not possible or easy to do it this way; I can grab just my vital files and completely reinstall Windows if it's absolutely necessary, but it seems excessive. I doubt the system restore files are corrupted. More, let's say, confuse... Read more

One of the biggest complaints about the Windows 8 start menu/screen, is the fact that it takes up the whole screen, unnecessarily blocking everything a desktop user is currently working on.

I've been playing around with Windows 8.1 Preview, and am getting used to snapping the start screen to the left side, like you can with metro apps, using Win+Arrow.
Because Windows 8 treats the Desktop like an app, it can be displayed on the right half of the screen, while the start menu is snapped to the left half of the screen.

So I'm just wondering whether there's a way to force the start screen to always open at half the fullscreen size? In other words, always snapped to the size.

This would be a great way to meet the fullscreen-start-menu-haters half-way.

I hear this a lot, but I really fail to understand what the issue is. The start screen is only open when you're trying to open another app. This is not a "multitasking" task, you just do it, and it takes seconds.. The start screen then goes away and you are right back where you were. What is the problem with this?

I can't seem to find where you can increase the size of the fonts used within the tiles on the start menu in 8.1. Is it possible to do, and if so, where would I do it at?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Answer:increasing font size on start menu tiles

If you right click on a tile, the sizing option should be on the bottom left of the screen.

Small size icons are getting cropped .. See the image....
Any ideas on how to fix...??

Edit: I'm on latest build 10240.. Funny...It was back to normal on a reboot and now again cropped..

Answer:Small size tiles in start menu are cropped..??

You have to tell us the build. If youre running an older build, I would recommend you updating to the latest version. If the problem persists, i think the only way is a fresh reinstall. You could also contact Microsoft about this (if you're running the latest build) and mark it as a bug, using the Windows Insider app. Hope you solve it, and don't forget to report back if you solve anything so other users affected also can fix the problem. Cheers!

Hi

I have increased my DPI to 250% to be able to read stuff in Windows without getting headache. Is there a way of increasing font size of start menu items as well?

And what about text size of items when alt tabbing, text size of charms bar (win+C) and text size of settings (win+i).
It seems to me that instead of improving the good old features of the older versions, Microsoft suddenly decided to replace them with lots of crap instead, not taking into account that there are people out there who don't have the eagle eye vision.

Answer:bigger font size for start menu items

Hello Alegue,

If you like, you could use either method in the tutorials below to change the DPI size of modern UI screens as well that includes the Start screen.

"Make everything on your screen bigger" - Turn On or Off

and/or

DPI - Change for Modern UI in Windows 8
Windows 8 is the first step in the merging of the mobile (think smartphone) and desktop operating system. The final goal is one OS for both. The purpose of these new modern UI screens is to be easy to use with touch screens.

Hope this helps,

Hi,
I have been using Windows 8.1 Pro for 1 month on my system with following settings:

Thinkpad Yoga i7, 8GB RAM, Intel 4400 HD.Resolution set is at Default on 1920x1080.Scaling at 150%
There is a big issue I have encountered many times which is very annoying. When I put the laptop to sleep mode, especially when it is in sleep mode for more that 2-3 hours, when it wakes up, all the fonts in windows Start Menu becomes smaller. This font change would also be seen in Windows Log on menu.

This will result in having 6 rows in start menu and the font are very tiny.

As I look to display settings, all the values are unchanged.

A restart will solve the problem and all the font sizes will come back to normal. But this is very annoying because I need to restart many times with no reason.

I appreciate any comments on this.

Thanks

thanks for response

Answer:Suddenly deleted C:\ProgramData folder no start menu items

Hello flashpoint, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Check your Recycle Bin to see if it may still be in there. If so, then you could just restore the folder from within the Recycle Bin.

If not, then you could do a system restore using a restore point dated before you deleted the folder to restore it to how it was when the restore point was created.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

On not so infrequent occasion, my Start Menu and Desktop, without warning, will suddenly experience the equivalent of an epileptic seizure. The Start Menu will start flickering really fast and windows will be slightly moved, resized or closed. The episode will occur for maybe 10 - 20 seconds and then the fireworks stop.

Afterwards, the fallout may result in some applications/windows that still remain open, they may (but not always) no longer respond to mouse clicks.

To be honest, I'm having difficulty figuring out what triggers this event. The best I can gather it happens when I move the mouse (nearby?) to click the Start Menu, but am not absolutely sure. It does not always happen and when it does, it occurs super fast and I lose complete control until this wacky (and very disruptive) behavior stops.

I searched google and could not find this problem documented. I am using Window 7 Ultimate, 32 bit, with the latest updates. My computer is a Dell Dimension 8300 (old), which means I am using a generic settings which include the mouse driver and video display (no Aero). The Windows Event logs do not reveal anything of interest. I have no security issues either - no viruses and spyware. Simplifying troubleshooting -I try to run the bare minimum of processes does not seem to help, either.

What else should I be looking at? Thanks for your help.

Answer:Windows 7 start menu & desktop suddenly goes bezerk - very strange

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

The only thing I can suggest is to try another mouse to see whether that has the same effect.

Not responding to mouse clicks suggests either the Windows in question don't have the focus or your mouse is faulty and/or dirty.

Hello,

I'd like to make my Start Menu bigger (increase its height, to be specific). I've seen someone post a screenshot here: http://news.softpedia.com/images/news2/Build-a-Monster-Windows-7-Start-M... Unfortunately, he didn't talk about how to achieve this.

I know that I can go into the Start Menu and Taskbar Properties menu > Customize > Start menu size and then and increase the number of recent programs to display, however, I really do not like to display recently opened programs (sorry to seem difficult). Is there any way to make the start menu size bigger without displaying recently opened programs?

Thank you,
Vic

Answer:Increase Start Menu Size (w/o recently opened programs)

That screenshot hides the "trick".

In Start Menu properties, enable display of all the sub-menus/links (User, Photos, Control Panel, et cetera).

I find that using the search box in Start is a PITB. For some reason, probably age related sight defects, I find looking down and left and focussing not easy. Add to that the size of print of any query input makes it easy to make errors in searches.

I don't want to use Magnifier, as otherwise my vision is not that bad, so my question is this.

Is there a way to relocate Start from bottom left ( with/without the other task bar items) to a personally more convenient location on the monitie screen?

Answer:Position of Start Menu Icon and print size in Search box

You could move the start button along with the taskbar to the right, left or top of your screen.

Hello everyone,

Last night, I caught my keyboard by accident (I think!). Since then, my start menu and sidebar got bigger; in addition, when default windows open, they too are bigger than before, as are other menus like the drop down Norton menu which is accessed from the the Norton logo on my toolbar in Mozilla.

Today, I have literally spent all day investigating how to put it back how it was. I have tried: the resolution; the start menu properties; changing to small icons; accessibility options - nothing can return my menus to how they were.

Restoring to an earlier point did not work (which was concerning); after restoration, I got a dialogue window that said something like, 'files and settings could not be restored as an anti virus programme is stopping restoration'. So, I disabled Norton Firewall and Anti Virus - got the same message!

Now, I've managed to reset the icon sizes to how they were; the clock is still bigger on the side bar, the news feeds only holds 4 stories and the start menu is so big that with the fly out menu showing too, it takes up nearly half the 20 inch monitor.

My resolution is exactly the size that it has been for months. It is like the screen is magnified; however, when I start the magnifier, it only goes from 100 to 200%. Is there another way to magnify please?

Every time I try something new, it messes up my desktop and I am out of options now.

Help please! What am I missing?

Thanks.

d.

Hi, Just tinkering with the start menu on Win 10 (Pro 64-bit) and have noticed a possible bug (unless there's a logical explanation for this behaviour?) When adding folder items to the Start menu, the menu size doesn't auto-size to fit additional items. I'd manually resized the menu to better fit the reduced number of items I have. However, when adding new folder items, the menu doesn't show them unless I manually extent the vertical-size of the menu. At first I thought there was a bug with menu, as new items weren't appearing. But it was simply due to the fact the menu wasn't resizing to accommodate additional items. Cheers, Mike.

For some reason, my start menu has suddenly become ridiculously tall, spanning the entire height of the screen. This image might give a better idea: imgur: the simple image sharer.

I have no idea how or why this happened. I tried searching for the problem, but I can't find a single thing even remotely related. My recent items count is at 0, so it's nothing to do with that. I've already tried fiddling about with the setting for that, but with no success at all. I tried a system restore to before this occurred, but this had absolutely no effect either. It's only affecting this profile, and no others (although, really, the only others are guest or temp accounts).

I've come hoping that someone in this forum may be able to suggest something.

Hi there

Got a nice light small laptop(screen 14 inch - enough for travelling) which has a native resolution of 1080 X 1920 --much better than the usual 768 X 1366 - especially when viewing movies etc. The display is really a significant improvement over the bog standard 768 X 1366 and really noticeable also when typing word documents or reading text.

(For travelling etc the 14 inch size is far more convenient than the more usual 16 - 17 inch sizes).

However the windows standard texts are tiny (boxes, drop down menus etc etc). -- I fixed most of it by adjusting text size settings and display to 150% -- the start menu items still have too small text.

If I increase the display resolution to 175% things like file explorer fail to start when clicked and the screen refreshes periodically - so set back to 150%.

Any body know of a way to increase text size on the Start menu.

Funnily enough when you use the WIN+X key / right mouse click on start button the text sizes in that list are fine --it's just the standard start menu when you click the windows start button.

I'm not sure what it is with I.T developers but it seems every time you get a decent improvement in the graphics on a computer the text sizes usually become so tiny as to be unreadable --I suppose it's difficult for a bank of developers all to work with 60 inch screens !!!!! but surely some of them must be able to test stuff out on decent bits of kit.

Sometimes I think I'm going blind here! Need to pull out a magnifying glass for text smaller then a driving test! How's it been by the way?

The DPI setting can be a help or hinderance at times with this as well as changing the style of text. The item of interest for you however is going into the Settings>System, Display, etc. there and opening up the Advanced display options where you then scroll down on the left side there to the "Advanced sizing of text and other items. Once you click on that the screen in the Control Panel then appears as seen in the snipping here.

You will note that was done on the fly as well as pointing out the one item of interest being the "menus" option which is likely the one thing that is able to make this specific type of change for you. That's unless you decide to change from the default Start menu that comes with 10 to something like Stardock's Start10 option? I just added that onto a new 17" 10 laptop lately when the old 7 laptop upgraded to 10 flopped out for no reason leaving only a black screen to look at. Backlit that is and hopefully not the integraded graphics chip on the board. If able to be fixed that can be passed along from grandmother to one of the grandsons since they keep borrowing and toying with the parent(s)'s laptops and ... Hello, Would someone please be able to help me. I recently got my computer back after being repaired and it was on a small resoultion under the 1000's. I bought a new screen to go with it and just turned it on. I went to display settings and changed resoultion to 1920x1080 and now its just a big blank stretched wallpaper with no icons, task menu/bar or start menu. I also can't click or right click thus I have no way to change this back. I've tried going into normal safe mode and display settings changed it to the smallest, restarted the computer and its doing the exact same thing. I know no fixes and would really appreciate all the help I can get.

I am confused as to why the "Modify the Vista Codecs" icon has suddenly appeared in my Start menu. I had installed v4.7.3 (published by Shark007) a year ago and have never since accessed it (and the icon looks the same but the name was just "Vista Codec Package").

I thought it was just a set of codecs that WMP would use to play various media files and not a program that modifies codecs.

The last thing I did before it showed up was install "Paragon Partition Manager 9.5 Professional" sandwiched inbetween the before and after installation analysis features of ZSoft Uninstaller v2.4.1.

I have Win XP SP2, all updated, Word 2002, SP3.

Choosing say A4 for page setup, setting it to 100% and viewing as Print layout, at 100% used to give a screen size page which was actually equal to A4 ie 21cm x 29.7cm.

For some time now, the screen size is now larger than that - the ruler at the top and bottom shows the marking as being 21cm x 29.7cm, but the cm units on the ruler are marked off at larger than cm units, consequently the screen size page is larger than actual.

This is annoying as it is not an accurate representation of the page layout for things on the page relative to each other.

Any ideas what has caused this and how to fix?

Hi

One approach that could work for this is to use Powershell, so if you have the search box type powershell and right click and run as admin it, then once open paste this line below in and hit enter, let it run and if you see red text dont worry its normal

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Once run reboot and test the Start menu, you may have to populate the Start menu with the common used apps if you added any, but it should leave the choices you made intact.

When I click on the START menu, why is there no path for me to be able to look at say, C:/my documents/my pictures etc...There is nothing there like it is in other Windows programs I have used.

Also when I right click on a program and try to "pin to start menu", there is no option for that, only the shortcut option.

What's up with these things?

Anyone feel like helping a XP Pro Novice out here?

Thanks in advance forn your help!

Answer:XP Pro question Path to C: on start menu & pinning programs to start menu. XP Pro

Right-click the taskbar and look through the Properties. There are some settings in there under the Customize rubric that may help you make changes.

I've expanded the size of the Start Menu so I can put a lot of Tiles there, but when I drag a Tile to a new location it sometimes bounces back to where it had been. Other times moving a Tile somewhere will cause another Tile so shift to somewhere else.
How can I instruct the Start Menu to allow me to place (by dragging) any Tile anywhere I want?

Answer:How To Be Able To Place Start Menu Tiles Anywher On Start Menu

The Windows 10 Start Menu is not a desktop. It is actually a series of square grids grouped under headings (called groups). When you move a tile to an empty group, you can see the space for the heading for that group appear. It seems to be a limitation that the spaces directly below a foup heading must be filled first. You can drag a tile to the third or fourth row under a group heading without the row above it being occupied by at least one tile first.

There can only be one tile in each grid space, so when you try to place a tile over the top of an existing one, the previously existing tile there must be moved out of the way for the new tile to fit in that grid space. The previous tile is moved to the nearest empty grid space underneath the same group heading.

If you click in the space for the group heading you can enter a name for that group. See this thread for an example:

I've not got the 'Start Menu' tab in my 'Taskbar and Start Menu Properties' control panel (right-click on taskbar). I've seen screenshots on the web, but my Win 10 Pro doesn't have. How can I enable?

Answer:Why doesn't the Start Menu tab appear in Task Bar & Start Menu Properties?

It's not supposed to have that tab, what screenshots are you talking about? Are they from the "RTM" or preview build?

It looks like a possibility, but I like to review the alternatives before getting a program.

Please don't tell me just uninstall a lot of programs. I'm going to do that when I have time to. But I don't now. I'm cautious about uninstalling programs with good reason. I almost uninstalled Jarte after installing it on a friend's advice. That would have been a huge mistake : now Jarte is one of my favorite programs.

Answer:What's best program for overcrowded XP start menu, Handy Start Menu or something else

Re: What's best program for overcrowded XP start menu, Handy Start Menu or something

conceptualclarity...

I think it helps to start with knowing how the start menu works. Without getting into the accounts bit (I don't have one on this PC...just use the default administrator account), here's what I did to organize my Start Menu:

1. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs
2. Leave the folder open but minimize it
3. Open Start menu and look at the entries with the idea of creating subgroups for them
4. Decide on subgroup titles and in the open C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs folder right click and select New->Folder
5. Title the folder the name of your first new subgroup
6. Repeat the process until you have all the subgroups you want
7. Now go to your Start menu, open it and the Programs menu. Begin dragging program icons into whichever folder you created for them.

Some examples of ones that might help you could be System Applications, Security Applications, Microsoft Programs, Internet Browsers, Media Browsers, Diagnostics Applications, PC Maintenance Applications, etc...

Anyway, this is how I organized my Start menu. For me, adding Rainmeter to the desktop made it even better. I use the Start menu about 1/3 as much because of Rainmeter...

How to change screen resolution in Windows XP

When I log into my computer with my account, everything is fine. As soon as I switch users, all the colors get weird; the hues are off a bit for some reason. It is very noticable when it happens - everything suddenly gets a little greener. When I switch back to my account, the colors stay strange. The only way to get back to the original colors is to restart.

It seems like as soon as the settings for the new account are being loaded, the display changes. You would think that if it was a user specific setting, then when I switched back to my account, the colors would return to normal, but they don't.

Any thoughts?

I've checked the resolution and color profile, and they are the same for both accounts. I am at a loss as to why this is happening.

Thanks!!

Answer:Colors suddenly changed

The first thing that I would check is the driver for the graphics card. Make sure that it is up to date. Access via device manager. Update from the company website.
Once inside device manager, look for any yellow warning notices about problems.

Hello ,

Today I downloaded an Activation for Windows 7.

It requires a reboot.

When I rebooted suddenly I was in a "Grub Command prompt" apparently.

Just like this :

http://members.iinet.net.au/~herman546/p15/fig2grub.gif
Important :

I downloaded Ubuntu couple days ago but I removed it.
I mean I had a boot loader with windows and ubuntu but I removed it.

My question is this :

How did it happened? , is this a Virus? and How can I go back to my previous bootloader when I would turn on my computer or reboot it and it would just go to Windows.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:My bootloader Changed suddenly.

You are better off in a Linux forum for bootloader questions.

To get access to the Windows installation, you could try startup repair x3 times.

I hope this is the correct forum to post this question.

I checked my IP address recently on an internet site and wrote it down, but tonight I checked it again and noticed that it was completely different to the one I had written down earlier. Is this cause for concern? To be honest I really don't understand the significance of an IP. Maybe someone could enlighten me.

Answer:Why Has My Ip Address Suddenly Changed?

Hi Southstreet. If you're on dial-up that is normal and is controlled by your isp. It's called a "dynamic" address.A "Static" address is one that will never change, such as one provided by a high speed cable connection. The first couple of paragraphs here explain what an IP Address is.

Do you use the mouse scroll wheel at all?  If you happen to catch the control key at the same time, it changes the text size on many web sites.

Question: Icon size changed

I'm curious about a visual issue with Windows 10. Specifically, the icons for the Mail, Store, and Calendar apps (to name a few) are small. As I can't add attachments or paste a link, the only way I can describe is that the Mail app, for example, is smaller in the Taskbar and has a "box" around it. Where as it typically is fully transparent and as large as other icons in the Taskbar.
I'm sure it's a dumb issue that I'm overlooking, but is there any reason this occurred? And, of course, how can I get the icons back to the size that they should be?

...and I can't figure out how it happened or how to fix it.

While browsing a web site, Pinterest, I went from one recipe screen to a second and noticed that the screen size had changed. It got larger and I can't see the entire page as before. I tried other web pages and found the same problem, the screen size had somehow been changed. I've checked the screen resolution and it's the same, 1024 X 768. All my non-web screens, excell, word, etc. are fine and haven't been changed, just web pages.
I ran AVG to see if there might have been a virus and it found nothing. Ran Malwarebytes and it found nothing. Did a CClean and that didn't help either. As a last resort even tried restoring back to 2 days before the problem occured. Still didn't correct it.
Other than changing the screen resolution at the control panel is there somewhere else for changing the screen resolution for web pages?

Hi

I have many pictures on my PC ( about 20,000 jpg files ) that I have backed up to an external hard disk and also burned on DVD.
I used beyond compare tool to compare the pictures that on my PC with the pictures that on the external drive and the DVD - all was identical.
Few days ago I have compered it again and saw that the files size is not the same meaning both "size" and "size on disk" properties of the files on my PC is less ( in several KB ) then the files on hard disk and DVD.

I use several SW like Picasa and Photoshop but only to view the pictures not edit them so I don't know what cause this change.

Please help.

Answer:Files size has changed on my PC !!!

Have you used any cleaning software, run a "Disk Cleanup", defragmented, or indeed anything like that?

All these things can alter the file size on a live disk. Nothing can alter the file size on a DVD.

Regards....Mike Connor
