Unable to connect to most websites -- not a browser problem

Question: Unable to connect to most websites -- not a browser problem

So about a few weeks ago (not exactly sure when it started) my computer stopped allowing me to access certain websites. It started out with only a few, but now it is almost 50-80% not connecting. I do not think it is a problem with my browser. I typically use Firefox, but IE will connect to the same ones Firefox allows, and will also not connect to the same websites Firefox will not allow.

I have searched these forums for a couple of hours now and nothing seems to fit my exact problem, and I am hesitant to use the solutions from other forums because it might further hurt my system. I am not tech-savvy/computer literate to say the least, and I would need a thorough walk-through on how to diagnose the problem, as well as how to fix it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Unable to connect to most websites -- not a browser problem

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Unable to connect to most websites -- not a browser problem

How are you not allowed to view the website? Does the page show "The page cannot be displayed"? or you are not authorized or something else?

Try running cmd.exe, type "ipconfig /flushdns" without quotes.

Hi everyone.first time on the forums, so if this is the wrong section for this topic, I apologize.I'm helping my younger brother with this issue:The issue is that the web browsers (chrome/firefox) not being able to go onto any site such as google.comWhat's peculiar is that1) the laptop has full internet access (the bars are all full) 2) Steam works3) spotify as well (occasionally) 4) it only happened on our computers... our parents computer had no issues whatsoverInfo:-Windows 7 64 bit-wireless connection-Verizon/Westell modemAntivirus that we use : AvastI use Malware antimalware ( he doesn't have it)so some back story: This issue has persisted on my laptop as well. My main browser of choice is Google chrome. And until maybe the beginning of july this year, things went well. It's only until maybe mid July did I occasionally begin to start getting DNS server errors (DNS lookup failed) on chrome. What also happened during that time is that i've been putting my pc to hibernate more often( my brother does not do this) , instead of directly turning it off. Anyways those issues were rare and occasional, but yesterday night and all of this morning, I was unable to gain any access to any website. Yesterday at least I was able to access the google homepage or maybe facebook, for a few seconds before it didn't work again. It worked in the afternoon and I took the time to find solutions, coming across this in a google forum:For those of us running Vista or Wind... I have been struggling with accessing certain websites while using my laptop, HP Envy 14; Intel i5 CPU; Windows 7 Home Premium x64. For example, while I am able to navigate to Google, performing a search containing the word "statistics" results in a deactivation of google `instant' and a "Problem loading page" error that prevents me from accessing the search results. There are many other such 'keywords' that result in the same thing. The problem is not limited to google (yahoo, ask, or virtually any search engine gives the same). The "Problem loading page" error is not even limited to searches, as it occurs for certain websites too, though indirectly through searches as that is how I locate most of the websites I visit. I was using Firefox 11.0 when I first noticed this issue, but it is the same if I switch to IE9.

The problem is not limited to my home internet connection, but occurs for every network I connect to. Interestingly, if I run a web browser through my Virtual Linux machine the problem disappears and I have no issues connecting to any websites. I have tried running SpyBot S&D to see if it was a malware issue and CCleaner to see if it went away if I cleared all my old settings / temporary files. Unfortunately, neither helped. I hope to be able to solve this problem as it is extremely aggravating, as I don't really know what the cause could be. If you have any suggestions, or need any information, let me know. I ran HijackThis ... Read more

I am not sure what type of virus/rootkit and/or malware might be causing this issure but here is the jist of the problem. My wifes computer is slow performance wise, is running AVG, all virus and rootkit scans with AVG show it is clean but there is definetly something wrong with it. We have run Malware bytes as well

General website browsing is slow. There is nothing in the connection settings elluding to any type of hijacks or proxy programs running.

Some websites are unable to get to like:
HTTPS sites like

The browser just spins and eventually times out.

Same thing occurs with this website when trying to use the search on the top of the page:

I have attached the scans from gmer and dds.

I would clear out any cookies for the problem sites and then type the individual addresses into your web browser address bar.You could also then "allow" these web sites - ie. in Firefox it would be via - Tools - Options - Accept Cookies from Sites EXCEPTIONS box - type in address and ALLOW. Similar for I.E.

Hi, I need help.I've a belkin USB adapter that works intermittently. So I changed a few settings to see if it help, but I made it worse:In...wireless connection; properties; configure; Advanced I changes few few of the fields, ...but I can't remember which, (it may've been 'RTS Threshold' or Fragment Threshold') ...and now though I can get to some websites, I can't get to others... for example I can get to ebay & I can search for things, but I can't open the login page. It says it can't establish a connection to the server. Can you help?

Answer:I'm unable to connect to certain websites.

Not much point in describing the Advanced tab, since it's unique to each adapter and some adapters don't even provide it. Despite being able to access this set of tabs from within the connection's properties palette, it actually comes straight from Device Manager. What you actually did was reconfigure the driver - uninstall and reinstall the adapter and your changes should be undone.

Ok, So I've had this problem for quite a while now and have tried to solve it without asking anywhere but I'm dumbfounded on what to do next.

My computer simply will not connect to certain websites, particularly, no matter what browser I use. I have checked the hosts file, run a malware scan, pinged youtube using DOS (and gotten a response) and taken my wireless router out of the equation, all to the same result: nothing.

If there is anything else I can do to possibly resolve this problem please assist me.

PS: I would also like to mention that I was told that this could be a problem with my ISP.
I do not believe this is the case due to every other device on my network being able to access youtube. This includes my Xbox, smartphone, iPad, and laptop, all with no problems. My main PC is the only device I have that has this problem.

Answer:Unable to connect to many websites - please help

Hello auto, and welcome to Sevenforums!

I may not know a whole lot on exactly what is causing you the problems, but we can troubleshoot a bit to see if we can't find what's going on inside. If youtube works on everything else, then it isn't an ISP problem.

First, are you using the latest version of internet explorer (9)? Do you have the same trouble with another web browser such as firefox or chrome?

Second, Do you have every single "important" update installed, and all internet explorer or web browser - related "optional" updates installed? And have you updated all add-ons for all web browsers that you use, especially flash player and java?
Just what are all the add-ons that you have installed, especially any security add-ons. Please list them for me. Do you have any tracking protection lists that you might have enabled? Disable all of those tracking protection lists and check to see if it all works now (may need to restart IE).

Now we go a little deeper so gird up your skirt and let's trudge:
What antivirus/antimalware software(s) are you running? Some antivirus/malware programs can hinder normal operation, so you might consider disabling all security features temporarily and navigating to a SAFE website, such as youtube, that you've been having trouble with. If you are able to use it well, then the problem lies with your security software(s).
Note: If you've installed another firewall other than the pre-installed windows firewall, disable it no... Read more

Hi there. I'm new to this site, and grateful for help that doesn't rip you off. I have a HP pc that has been fine up to last few days. Using Vista as the platform. For some reason I'm unable to open any website or even a browser. Got a very good wireless connection and have done a diagnoses through Windows to see if any connection issues, found none. I'm puzzled because up to just a few days ago I had no problem connecting to a browser like OPERA, or IE, or MAXTHON. I'm getting error message "cannot connect to the website" Error code 324 (,net: ERR EMPTY RESPONSE). ,
I have tried system restore, but pc will not accept system restore to an earlier restore point for some reason. I am baffled. Please can you advise. Thanks

Answer:Unable to connect to certain websites

Hi 8atenate and welcome to TSF !

Might be some problem with the hosts file.

Open windows explorer, go to tools => folder options => view. Uncheck "hide operating system protected files" and "hide extensions for known file types" and check "show hidden files and folder".

Navigate to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc and locate the file named hosts. Open that file in notepad (you can open notepad and drag 'n drop the file in it, or double-click the file and choose notepad in the open with list). Ignore the lines starting with # but check that there are no other lines than localhost at the bottom. Report if you see other such lines.

Hi All

I have a strange problem with one of our computers, the machine is running Windows XP and bascially IE8 kept crashing because of a problem with 'ntdll.dll', so I disabled all IE add-ons. ran ccleaner, uninstalled Norton AV (license had expired) and reinstalled AVG. Basically now I am unable to hit any webpages by domain name or IP, the page just comes up with 'page cannot be displayed' I have installed Firefox but still the same problem.

Here's the part that is confusing me! I can ping internal network IP's as well as WAN IP's, google, bbc etc. I can also do nslookups no problem. I've tried after disabling firewall, no good. tried flushing dns, still no good. I have tried telnetting to a site on port 80 and connected fine and I am also able to log into msn messenger! I'm totally lost now so any help help/guidance etc would be gratefully received.

The only explanation I can think of is a virus (Apologies if I' should have posted in the malware forums but I thought I'd rule out a network issue first)

Many thanks in advance

This problem started about a month ago. Many sites (not all) will not connect anymore unless I re-enter the URL or press F5 repeatedly. A few sites will not connect at all.

Downloads give a message that the file or program cannot be downloaded, but if I press ?try again?, it says resuming, then proceeds to download the file.

The computer is a custom built ASUS less than 6 months old. Setup:
SSD 128 (with 1TB HD)
16GB ram
Asus B85M-E motherboard
Asus GeFroce GTX650 1GB graphics card
Win7 home premium

I couldn't locate the problem, so I bought a new 1TB Seagate HD, loaded Win7 Professional and installed IE11, hoping this would solve the problem. But it's still happening, with even more sites not connecting until I re-enter the URL or press F5 a few times. I shut off the anti-virus programs with no change.

Two different drives, two different browsers, two different versions of windows, same problem...

Note: I noticed on the ASUS website that there are several updates for the B85M-E motherboard; would that have anything to do with my problem? (You may have noticed that I'm not a computer expert.)

Any ideas would be appreciated,

Hello, when using my netgear DG834GT router i cant connect to msn, sign in, windows update, windows live messenger and windows defender update(via firefox after working fine for over a year). Error codes for messenger 80048439, windows defender 0x80072ee2. However connecting via my old BT voyager 100 modem it all works fine. After googling the error codes i have changed the MTU setting in my router to 1500,1492,1458,1400 and then using SG TCP Optimizer and largest MTU and that came back with 1453 which didnt make any difference. I've reset the router and used the setup wizard, ran AVG, CCleaner, Windows defender ,Ad aware and spybot S&D but no joy. Thanks for any help.

Hello, I am new and looking for some help with a very annoying and persistent issue I have been experiencing as of late. First of all, i have tried this on 3 PCs on the same home wireless network, tried it wired with each PC seperately, and so forth. One PC runs Vista(my primary one), the other two run Win7. Have flushed and restarted the dns, as well as trying opendns and googledns services, tried clearing the browser caches on IE, Firefox, Chrome, nothing makes any difference. What i am experiencing is that a good proportion of sites(around 30-60%, it varies) will not load at all without using a proxy, I have returned home to the UK for the holidays after several months in the US, and noticed this problem has been active now since Christmas day. My first 2 days at home the internet was totally normal and this issue was not present, then it started suddenly with no action from myself. Traceroutes to sites reveal a timeout but the start hop for the timeouts varies from site to site. I have been sure to select a wide cross section of sites to try. Resetting the router seems to generate somewhat of a lucky dip of sites i can connect to, so if i cannot connect to a site and do not wish to use a proxy, i reset the router usually several times until the specific site finally works. My connection speed is stable at 2.2MB/S download and 0.2-0.4 upload, which is the maximum for my rural exchange. Speed is no issue unless i try to stream HD or make large downloads. My ISP Is BT, their... Read more

Hi all. Yet another newbie here needing help.I have a problem which didn't seem to occur previously but is now causing a lot of inconvenience for me. I'm running XP on a Toshiba notebook I think IE5. Whenever I use websites that require me to fill-in forms/register (most recent examples include applying for a new bank account and a yahoo! email address) I complete the fill-in forms/registration and when I click on complete/OK (usually after at least 10 minutes of form-filling!) my browser just totally closes, like disappears as though I've clicked on the red x in the top right corner. Basically I can't complete transactions and registrations. I really have no idea what's causing this but it's becoming as real pain. I can't even sign into my university email account from home. A friend told me it had something to do with my java or ActiveX settings, but they're at default. Reading the microsoft pages the symptoms are similar to those outlined in an article about the 832894 (MS04-004) security update in which critical update 831167 is cited as a resolution. I really can't figure this out. I've posted on a few forums but nobody seems able to provide a solution. My cipher strength  is 128-bit. I really need to get this resolved as I work from home and this is causing real problems for me.Any ideas/suggestions hugely appreciated Thanks for all/any replys in advanceCraig

This issue arises randomly and only once has it ever recovered. Event viewer also does not show anything either. Restarting fixes this issue, but I would rather find out what caused this issue in the first place.

I cannot connect to any sites using HTTP or HTTPS but I can connect to my remote FTP server and PING works for any website. I have used 'netsh' in an attempt to fix my issues but it requires a restart where it would fix it temporarily.

I also cannot access any local IPs or my localhost web server. I can however access some of Google's websites on Google Chrome Dev but not on any other browser. For the other sites I get a TIMED_OUT error. I have reinstalled my network drivers and reset my network settings (including DNS) but nothing else works.

I even turned off Bitdefender Firewall and Antivirus and Malwarebytes and issued a system scan but does not impact anything.

Right, lets start from the beginning......

At the start of march, I decided to build my self a new PC for gaming, this was my first build which was a bit of a budget one at around 600. The build went ok, but I then needed to get a new router as we previously only had one computer in the house (meaning we connected through a modem). In the end we went for a different deal with the same provider which included a free router.
So, I got everything connected up and it worked! (Hurrah!) Untill about two weeks ago...... (Knew luck wasn't actually on my on my side for once!)

So now that's enough of me rambling on about my life history, It is time for the current problem.
I'm not very complex with computers, so you will have to bare with me...
Basically, the internet will be connected, but then when you load a web page (such as it won't, and then if you load anther webpage (such as it will work, if you try again in 3 hours time ect. It will be vise versa. However, the internet does work fine at times, and not certain times, it can be anywhere from late at night to peak times in the evening.

I have searched the web over and over but most of the similar problems are for just one computer, where as my problem is on both my 7 and the older XP, which pretty much confirms ( I think) that it is to do with the router rather than the computer.

When A page doesn't load it comes up with this message (on chrome):
This webpage is not availabl... Read more

My sister-in-law brought me her computer, because it contains some malware.
I followed the instructions on the MG Readme page.
The malware seems to be cleaned successfully, but I'm still experiencing a
problem that i'm unable to connect several AntiVirus websites.
Maybe there's still a process running, preventing me to access those websites.

Important information for the one who helps me with this:
My default Windows-folder is C:\RESTORED instead of C:\WINDOWS
This is because I restored an older image.

I'd add some logs from SAS, MalwareBytes, Combofix and MGTools

Hi, a while ago I had a root kit, and I assumed this problem was because of it, but the root kit is gone (some how), the problem occurs when I navigate to a website or download link...

I've recently visited this site:

I can no longer visit it, with Trend Micro (my firewall) on, it says 'The connection was terminated while negotiating a connection'.

Without it on, it says 'Network Timeout' the server at ... is taking to long to respond,

The requested site did not respond to a connection request and the browser has stopped waiting for a reply.

I've changed no settings recently, so I can't see why this is happening, I do know sometimes when I navigate to a website (from google) it redirects me to something else... not sure if that's related or not, I doubt it :/.

This problem isn't recent though, nearly a month now perhaps, initially I had trouble downloading from Microsoft.. trying to update DirectX, but I could not download the plugin to verify my copy of windows, nor go to the alternative method page.

Also downloading some programs from sites also doesn't work (sometimes)

Also... My auto updates do NOT run, I'm not sure why (for Windows), so I'm not receiving updates :/

I'm using Windows XP SP2, my internet has an ethernet connection.

Our router's plugged into a Time Capsule (Mac backup device & router as well), which my... Read more

The laptop can send/receive email, but is unable to browse the internet. I tried commenting out some startup items, reinstalled NIS 2007, it worked for a day or two but then symptom reappeared: The browser just sits going to, it doesn't time out, but just sits with blank page.
Any suggestions appreciated. Attached is HijackThis Log:

My laptop refuses to connect with Firefox, IE7 or Opera. I wait and then I get a `timed out` message each time I try.

My server connection is ok and I can send messages via OE.

I`ve had no problems with my firwall settings before but I have changed my firewall to other providers without success. I`m using AVG paid anti virus.
I tried connecting to Windows URL and received this message:

`HTTP Error 12002 connecting to The operation timed out.`

I`ve used CC cleaner and system restore but the problem remains.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer:Unable To Connect To Browser

Please provide us your network setup. Do you have a router? Cable modem? DSL?

Did this just started to happen recently? You can try right clicking on the network icon by the clock and click on "network repair". If this process doesn't fix the problem you can try clicking on start -> run -> type in "cmd" and then once the command prompt screen opens up, type in "icponfig/release". Then afterwards type in "ipconfig/renew" and see if this fixes your issue.

Also see if you can ping any websites like yahoo for example. type in "ping" and see if you get any packets loss, all received, etc etc.

Are you on a wireless connection, hard-wired?

Hello everyone!
the fact that I am typing this message at all is a miracle in itself. Sometimes this browser works and sometimes it doesn't. Mostly it doesn't (neither I might point out does internet explorer work either - at all) I keep gettng a error - cannot connect - server not found. I hit the reload button about ten times and eventually it connects. This is a dell 600m laptop connected to a tether palm700p - and NO there is nothing wrong with the connection or the palm Under network adapters (when I ran a scan) I have failed and DNS search order failed. I curently have the WIFI function turned off on this computer. I am on a business trip in Tucson tethered to the Palm and trying to work and being most miserable. I have no known virus - I have Norton and run it regularly and I am using PC Registry Mechanic and McAfee intrusion protection. I disk clean and defrag on a regular basis - to no avail. I am trying to get into Audio Acrobat to do a podcast for HELP - I am losing my mind. Palm/Verizon cannot help.
Sometime ago, at my home in Colorado someone was trying to install Qwest DSL service. He did and it was fine. Well ever since there is a blank IE window in the task bar that I cannot close. Does that have something to do with this? I would rather NOT pay microsoft a bunch of money I don't have - and am actually quite desperate.

HiI've recently bought a Cable & Wireless Wireless 11g ADSL routerModel no: ADSLR10CW3I have been able to connect to the internet through my PC via Ethernet connection and with my laptop through wireless connection. Since then I have been unable to connect to the router via an internet browser. When installing the router I used click here to connect to the router but now when I type this into the browser nothing happens and it gets timed out.I've checked the network connection details Physical Address: 00-14-85-3F-75-BCIP Address: Mask: Gateway: Server: Obtained: 31/08/2006 09:44:36Lease Expires: 01/09/2006 09:44:36DNS Server: Server: Have tried all of the above with no luck. Please can you help me out as I need to configure my router to set up security.Thank you

My first post on this site, so I hope someone can help.

I am trying to clean a Dell Latitude C640 running XP SP3 for my niece, which has become very slow, so must be infected with something.

I have tried the following (not necessarily in this order):
1. Ran Sybot
2. Ran Adaware
3. Ran Housecall
4. Ran Wise Registry cleaner
5. Ran Malwarebytes
6. Ran Hijackthis

Now the browsers (have also loaded Chrome) are redirecting at random to page. I also can't get access to windows update.

I have attached a copy of the HijackThis log.

All help is very gratefully received.

Answer:IE8 browser redirecting, unable to connect to windows update

Not sure I have done the right thing, but I have now run ComboFix and attached the log file.

I am trying to help a co-worker get his Wifi working.

The wireless manager says he has a connection but when starting up firefox it is unable to pick up a web site. He just informed me he is unable to get connected via his LAN line at home.

He's assuming something he did with firewall settings a few days ago caused this. Where should l look first to try to solve this?

Answer:Shows receiving WIFI but browser says unable to connect

When both wireless and ethernet are having trouble connecting a top suspect is a 3rd party firewall (security suite).

My browsers (google chrome/mozilla firefox) have been crashing frequently, normally when I do a search through google or when I load a page on google chrome, the browser just crashes. My browsers have also been periodically redirected to some ads, in addition google chrome has a lot of trouble when accessing https, like facebook log-in, or gmail log-in, ESPN log-in, they all have troubling loading and eventually Google chrome says, "Operation has timed out". I am also have trouble connecting to the internet with Zune, when I try to update my windows phone it says that zune could not connect to the update server.

I have also been getting blue screen's of death's a few times a day ever since this the redirection began.

I have a Windows 7, 64bit Sony VAIO laptop.

1) I first noticed a problem with Avast Internet Security - suddenly it was unable to update virus definitions because it was unable to connect to the internet. However my internet was working fine - I was able to browse the internet, etc.

2) Thinking this was a problem with Avast, I uninstalled it, and instead installed Norton Internet Security.
Alas, the same problem occurred again - Norton reported that it was unable to connect to the internet.

However, as before I was able to browse the internet in my browser as normal; there was clearly no internet connection problem.

So everyday I was having to update Norton definitions manually by downloading them from Norton's site.

3) Then, just yesterday something even stranger happened. I needed to reinstall Firefox (because I was having some Flash compatibility issues). I deleted to "Mozilla Firefox" folder from the Program Files in an attempt to do a clean reinstall, however, Firefox would not reinstall.
Internet Explorer also stopped working so I was left with no browser.

4) So, then I did a system restore to the time before Avast started playing up. It didn't solve the original Avast problem.

It did reinstall Firefox, but when I try to open it, I keep getting this error message: Couldn't load XPCOM.

I've tried to uninstall firefox to reinstall, but it won't let me uninstall. I tried installing it using the Firefox setup file, b... Read more

I'm having a peculiar problem that I can't seem to resolve for more than a couple days at a time. Every now and then my laptop stops loading webpages. I'm still connected, I can use Skype, and if I'm on Twitter already that site works fine, but new sites won't load and the error I get is either just can't connect to internet or something about the DNS taking too long.
I'm connected wirelessly, the main computer works fine and my phone and tablet can both use the WiFi fine but not my laptop. I've actually had this problem for months and it used to tell me there was an IP conflict.
Using the ipconfig release and renew commands used to work, but now even that doesn't help. Resetting or unplugging the router also used to work, but again, now it does nothing. The only thing that helps now is if I go into the adapter settings and manually configure a new static IP address and use Google's public DNS server. But now even that fix isn't working for more than a couple days at a time, and then it gives me hours of fighting with the settings, changing IPs, switching the DNS back and forth, rebooting the computer, etc etc until it finally decides to work again. And when it works sometimes it only lasts long enough to load a page before it quits working again. At best, like I've said, it works for a couple days without problems and then suddenly quits again.
I really really don't know much about computers like this. The above fixes I've only managed to find after a lotttt of Google searc... Read more

Hello, and Welcome
Have you tried reinstalling the Wireless Drivers? Sometimes the intel wireless drivers get wonky if your Dell has those. Right click the Wireless adapter in Device Manager. Select Properties. Under the details tab, select Hardware ID's in the dropdown box. Copy and Paste the first line in your next post.

I am having problems getting access most websites using either Internet explorer and firefox. If I search on google and click on a result or type in manually a number of different things happen:
It times out.
Browser unable to connect message appears.
I get redirected to a totally different website, sometimes back to Google.
If I flick back and forth between pages I sometimes can access the site I'm after.
And now and again I get to where I want to be.
Incidentally it appears that all website on my favourites bar work fine.

I've noticed windows security is detecting 2 viruses regularly and cleaning clearing them, it seems that they appear every time I turn my computer on. They are both Trojans called either ramnit or alureon. Windows doesn't detect anything else following a full system scan.

Can this be solved please, it's driving me around the bend.

Thanks for your time.

My mom's PC is behaving badly. Her internet connection will intermittently stop working. Firefox, IE and Chrome all share the same symptoms when the problem is active. My mom states, the longer her PC in on, the more likely the problem will arise.. By "problem", she means: Underlined or bold hot links will result in "unable to open page, pls check your internet connection". Bookmarked pages still seem to work (even after clearing cookies, history, etc)??? The connection is still active, as suggestions come up when typing a new search (in Yahoo/google search window).

Her McAfee program keeps finding the following:

the name: Adware-DFC
type: Potentially unwanted
file name: E:\WINDOWS\TEMP\cfin

Attempts to delete/quarantine always fail.

I updated and ran Malwarebytes which yielded 0 hits.

She was missing several security updates for Windows.. I started installing these for her...

She has recently updated her McAfee from 2009 to 2010 (after problem started occurring).

She is able to browse normally after leaving her computer off with power disconnected from modem for several hours..

She has spent much time with AT&T tech support and they have determined her connection is good and that an "unwanted program" is at fault.

Where do we go from here?

Thanks for any/all advice,

My AOL browser appears to be disabled. It regards every website or hyperlink as a file to be downloaded. (Example: click on a link, a window opens up asking me if I want to "save" , "download" or "cancel" this file) Then a blank window opens. I have tried clicking on all three options and ignoring this but my browser won't operate. I also can't get into my e-mail. A red check mark appears and my mail automatically goes to old mail, but never appears.

I have removed and reinstalled AOL, run a complete system scan, deleted cookies, etc. --nothing works. I cannot run the "hijack this" link because I can't get to the website! I should mention that I am on a different computer in the house. I would not even be able to get to this website on my other computer.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Download HijackThis on the other computer and save it on a floppy. Copy it over to the problematic computer and run HijackThis.

I suggest PMing me or one of the security analysts to take a look at this. Since I'm not sure it's spyware related or not, I will leave your thread here for now.

I received a message from my ISP stating that malicious activity had been reported from my IP. I have run Malware Bytes, Stopzilla, Emsisoft and AVG scans several times. Malware Bytes keeps showing Rootkit.Agent. I removed it restart and it comes back. AVG shows nothing. Stopzilla and Emsisoft have showed 3 or 4 various Trojans. I have removed, restarted and had several clean scans. I will scan again and another infection will be found. The symptom that I am noticing the most is that my browser will not load pages off and on and I have to refresh several times to get the page working. This is happening on both my PC and my netbook. My PC is running Windows Vista 32 bit and my netbook is running Windows XP. I have no idea what to do beyond using the software that I have been using. I made a HJT log:

This problem happens in all browsers.
I can't see Adbrite ads, for example. And some websites don't display correctly.

Here's how my website displays Statcounter:

To see how it should be displayed visit StatCounter Free invisible Web tracker, Hit counter and Web stats.

I have Flash Player installed, so that shouldn't be the problem. I also have Java 32 bits SE installed... Anyone knows what could be wrong?

Since late last night, I've been getting a Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Error pop-up after about a half hour of browsing the Internet. Originally, if I ignored it or clicked "Do Not Send" (as it appeared as an error report message), my Internet would stop working until I rebooted. However that quickly went away, and was replaced by instead changing my taskbar to a strange, low-resolution version. This still happens, but it corrects itself over time if not instantly. After I received the pop-up while using IE, I would intermittently be either redirected to a random website, or a new tab would open with the website instead. I didn't write down the names of these sites as I simply closed the tabs when they opened to prevent them from loading completely. But, after an hour or so of using Internet Explorer, it began crashing after a few seconds of being run. EDIT: DDS report keeps getting cut off for some reason... Guess that the DDS is too big? Let's try a HijackThis instead...Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 8:18:14 PM, on 3/2/2010Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.6001.18702)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC: ... I am connected to Cox Cable. Recently I commenced getting a Browser error message: "Failed to connect to server". To overcome the problem I would disconnect both my modem and router, allow them several minutes to reset, and reconnect. This, sometimes resolved the problem for a few hours. At other times I have had to repeat the process every few minutes. I thought I would check with the Forum before presenting the problem to Cox since it may, possibly, be at this end and I haven't been able to identify it. TIA for any help or suggestions. cw

Answer:Browser Connect Problem

Does the router have any LEDs that tell you whether or not it has a good WAN connection? Does the modem have any LEDs that indicate the status of "send," "receive," "online" and/or "activity"? If so, what are they indicating when you get the problem?

Hi all,
under Win10 x64 & IE11 fully patched & updated, since some time I am unable to drag&drop websites to the "Favorites" bar in IE like before. I am now also unable to rearrange existing shortcuts at the bar by drag&drop.
What I already checked:

did reset all IE setting incl. personal settings - no effectStarted IE without addons - no effectTried with another user profile, no effectremoved almost all items from autostart (using MSConfig), no effectchecked folder permissions on my "Favorites" folder, they are fine

Booting Win10 in safe mode, drag&drop works, rearrange worksAdding a website using a button "Add to a favorites bar" worksafter opening "favorites" on the left side of IE and navigating to "Favorites Bar" folder, I was ABLE to rearrange shortcuts there, and the changes were instantly reflected on my "Favorites" bar.
Any suggestions?
I have found this thread with exactly same sympthoms, but unfortunately the "solution" provided there (and somehow marked as answer (???!!!))  is not a solution.
Any suggestions?

First I am posting this for a friend as he only has an email connection and can't get his AOL browser to connect to the web and he is still running so takes took forever to do anything.

Started last Friday when he found out he had the Trojan FalseAlert-AB, which got thru McAfee somehow. He then started to download other programs to remove e.g. PestPatrol, Spybot, Avast, AVG? which showed up in his Window Task Manager, but not running at the time I received his screen print of Task Manager. He normally uses AOL 8, but also installed AOL 9 to get internet access on top of everything else, but no luck.

He finally get in touch with me two days later... I pass him an attachment for mham-set.exe from, which got rid of the Trojan (SpyBot apparently removed only two of three issues.) After that his computer is still slow and no internet access. I then had him email me a screen print of task manager.

In Window Task Manager I saw a aoltsmon.exe running hogging 87% of the system and found out part of AOL under TopSpeed from AOL 9. I had him disable in config>services. Still has problem he can't access the internet. I also told him to uninstall the other programs he had used and passed him Hijack in an attachment. Told him to run a listing for me and uninstall all the other software he had installed, but told me he had. The following is a list of his emails he sent to me since yesterday.

O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider
'c:\docume~1\compaq~1\locals~1\temp\ntdll64.dll' missing

Problem fixed by downloading and running lspfix.exe and WinsockXP.exe

Repairs Winsock 2 settings, caused by buggy or improperly-removed
Internet software, that result in loss of Internet access

LSP-Fix is a free Windows utility to repair a loss of Internet
access associated with certain types of software. This type of
software, known as a Layered Service Provider or LSP, typically
handles low-level Internet-related tasks, and data is passed
through a chain of these programs on its way to and from the
Internet. However, due to bugs in the LSP software or deletion of
the software, this chain can get broken, causing the Internet
connection to become inaccessible.

Unfortunately, problematic LSP software, including
malware/spyware, is sometimes quietly installed by unrelated
products such as file-sharing programs, sneaking onto a system
unannounced. In fact, in many cases, the user does not know of
its existence until something goes wrong, and he/she can no
longer access Web sites. Historically,* (NEWDOTNET) and
WebHancer* (often bundled with file-sharing utilities, DVD player
software, and other free downloads) have been the worst
offenders, but the problem can be caused by any
improperly-written Layered Service Provider software, or the
deletion of any LSP program's fil... Read more

Right now, the computer that is infected had several problems with popups and redirects. Sometimes it wouldn't connect to certain pages and say it was unable to find.

After running Adaware though, the computer will not connect to the internet at all and neither will Outlook Express.

I have installed and run Adaware 6.0, CWShredder, and HijackThis. Here is my HJT log. Please help!

For some reason in the BIOS, the MAC LAN(nVIDIA) was disabled...don't ask me why. I deleted the adapter, went into bios, changed it, booted up, and it worked fine.
This is an interesting problem.....
This past weekend, I had the brilliant idea of spending a day trying to format my partitioned computer. (Somehow, XP Pro managed to change my driver letters, but that was easily fixed) Anyways, have Windows XP Pro and a EPoX 8RDA+ motherboard with onboard LAN and I connect to an EDU connection.

Format Run #1
I wiped my C:\ Partition (My WinXP Pro system HDD partition) and installed my EPoX CD of many drivers/utilities. Everything worked fine (I got internet to work) until something died, and I don't remember why but somewhere, XP managed to lose my CD-ROM. As much as I tried to revive my CD-ROM, my sound, and my LAN, I just decided to format it again.

Format Run #2
Installed XP Pro again, installed the EPoX CD, my graphics drivers, etc., and everything works fine EXCEPT my internet. Usually, in network connections, it says "Local Area Network" (for people with Cable/DSL/EDU). Mine says "1394 Network Adapter" in network connections and network adapters in my device manager. That's all. Also, the device is working properly.

That and I'm pretty sure the OIT (Internet office in my school) didn't shut off my jack because I tried switching with my room mate's. Also, there is a blinking light in the back when ... Read more

Hi, yesterday I tried to connect to a hotspot wifi and noticed that the icon on the taskbar is not visible.

So i tried going to my network connections and didn't find the LAN or Wireless Network connection that I usually configure whenever i try to connect to other network.

So I went to device manager and saw this annoying exclamation sign over my hardware. attached is a screenie. What do you say I should do?

Answer:Networking problem on my XP (unable to connect internet)

Those icons indicate you have a driver problem for the devices.. tho it's odd that you suddenly have a driver problem for both yur wired AND wireless suddenly

I think best next step is to uninstall / reinstall the devices.

I'd first look in Add/Remove Programs to see if any LAN or WLAN entries are found and uninstall them. Then uninstall from DevMgr.
> Intel Pro / 100 VE Net Connection and
> Intel 3945ABG Net Connection
Then try reinstalling the drivers from HP's web site should have them there for you to download

fyi... is a bit troubling wired and wireless and even your 1394 device show an error.. is possible there is a bigger problem.. but suggest you first try the uninstall/reinstall per above

Hello! I'm new to the forum and i've read a bunch of stuff from previous people who have posted here and it's been quite informative. I downloaded S&D and Ad-aware prior to the problem, however it's been reoccuring for some time now and i can't seem to get rid of it. I recently downloaded the Microsoft Anti-spyware Beta and it detected the Browser Hijacker. However, i am unable to get rid of it. I can't restore my browser to it's previous setting; it won't allow me to. The detected Browser Hijacker is "" and is located in the registery. I'm not too sure why S&D, the beta or Ad-aware won't get rid of it, but i really would like for this problem to be solved. Also, for the computer problem aside from the hijacked browser, my computer seems to shut itself off at around 7 am every morning. the settings are set to never shut down, so I was wondering if this had anything to do with all of this going on? I did a virus scan and nothing was detected (Norton Antivirus and Housecall). Earlier this week, I had a virus (trojan) but got rid of it through Housecall. anyway, here is my log, sorry for such a long post. Please help me as much as you can. Anything and everything would be great. Thanks in advance.

This is with a work application that my co-worker friend is having problems with. We both work on the same team. The web based application we use is on IE. I currently have IE 6.0 but am not sure which version she has.

The problem she is having is that a new browser window should open when clicking on different buttons in this application. It was working fine for her until the other day. Now what she has to do is hit the Ctrl key first then click the button to allow the new browser window to open. Very time consuming.

We have checked her machine and the Pop-Up blocker is turned off.

Any help is greatly appreciated. thanks.Dano2

I wanted to Add: She is now trying to use FF but has the similar issue that happens sporadically.

Hi there,

I have been unable to connect my Netgear RangeMAX Next Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router (DG834N) to the internet, I have spent about three hours on the phone to Netgear and my ISP and both of them have not heard of the problem before and can't help me, hopefully you guys can, as I'm tearing my hair out after trying to set it up for 3 days

First my settings;

I have ADSL from in the UK
I have set the router up, as the ISP advised;

Multiplexing Method=VC Based
I have it set to find an IP and DNS address automatically, and I have also done this in the Internet settings.
I have do not dial any connection in my Internet settings also.

When I switch the router on the Internet, Wireless and Lan lights go solid green, but when I try to use the internet nothing.

I should mention at this point, that I can connect to the Internet, with the USB Speedtouch Modem that my ISP provided me, so I know I have the password and login name correct. This also rules out any fault on the ADSL line (I think!!!)

When I check the router I get the following messages;

When trying to repair the network It seems to get stuck when renewing the IP address. It is currently showing a 169. ip address. If i run ipconfig/release it changes to all zeros, ipconfig/renew does nothing. I was previously using aol to connect to the internet and norton. Both are now uninstalled. I would like to use IE to surf and I have panda software to install for security. I have two other laptops which both connect no problem at the same time. Any ideas on how to fix???

I just installed a freshly clean windows 7 ultimate 64bit.
When I tried to connect to the internet it says I need to install a network drive or something. I've done that but it still can't connect to my modem. It doesn't even detect any connection coming from the modem and I'm connected through a ethernet cable.
Any ideas on how it can be fixed?

Answer:Unable to connect to internet cause of network adapter problem.

go to Start/Search and type devmgmt.msc right click the devmgmt.msc icon in the Search Results and Run As Administrator. In the Device Manager do you see any devices with yellow marks? If so, these devices need to have drivers installed. If you have a name brand computer (Dell, HP etc) go to the manufacturers Support/Download Drivers site and type in your service tag # or your make and model # and download the Network Adapter for your specific computer. And any other drivers you need.

My high-school age niece's laptop was so messed up, it would no longer work properly.  I used malwarebytes antimalware to detect and eliminate any virus or malware, then deleted any software that I did not recognize.  She said that IE did not work, so I deleted it also...with the intention of downloading the newest version.  I left Google Chrome on the computer.  When I tried to access the internet, via ethernet cable, I was not able to get online.  The error message said the computer was not able to connect to the proxy server; but, it showed that the computer was connected to the internet....Google Chrome would not connect to the internet provider, however.  I tried several things; nothing worked.  Can anyone help me?

Answer:Problem with Proxy Server; Unable to connect to internet

Hi  Open the chrome browser >>  Next  once Chrome is open then in the top Right hand corner of the browser ( below red cross) you will see 3 lines horizontal to each other . Click the 3 lines and open browser options >> Next > click  Settings >>> Next  scroll down till you see Advanced Settings and click Advanced Settings >>>>  Next scroll down to where it says Network >> Next click  Change Proxy Settings >>>> Once inside Internet Properties  Click LAN settings >>>> Make sure that  " Automatically  Detect Settings "  and click OK ...   Close the Browser and re-open Chrome and your home page should be displayed as normal .  Also if you have uninstalled IE ( internet explorer ) You can run Windows update and it should realise that IE has been uninstalled and offer the program via Windows Udate again . Failing that here is the link for IE 11 download.                    Hope this helps                                Checkurtech

I'll be as brief as possible:
1. Main problem: Unable to connect to a certain game server from this computer.

2. Secondary problem: when I started to determine what is causing this problem, I was getting all kind of weird results with ipconfig.

* This computer is connected via router. However, I don't think it's a problem with router (port forwarding and such) because the computer in the other room is connected via same router and everything works there just fine. That also eliminated some other possible problems. Firewall is not a problem either, I even switched it off just to double-check.

* Ethernet card is relatively new. Lightning problems in the area.
There are no visible problems with ethernet card (no red/yellow indicator in Device manager).
Router is also new. Last one got fried.

* Everything else works fine: no problems using Internet (other than the mentioned one), no problem sharing files between computers, sharing printer and such.

* In cmd, ipconfig command gives this: "Windows IP configuration". That's it.
Ipconfig /all gives: nothing under primary DNS (it's blank), Node type unknown, IP routing and WINS proxy are both 'yes' enabled.
There is no ethernet adapter info shown!

* What's weird is that ipconfig /release gives "The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation".

* Repairing Local Area Connection gives a message regarding "Flushing... Read more

My pc with Vista can connect wirelessly to the router but can not go on the internet, the signal is strong. I can connect via cable. My old xp pc can connect wirelessly using the same adapter that I use for my Vista pc. Having surfed some forums, I find this to be a common problem amongst Vista users. I have read that by doing something with your MAC address you can solve the problem (clone it?). My question now is as follows:

What is this MAC address thing?
And what do I have to do with it to make my internet work?

Just got off the phone with Verizon. They had me push the reset button and I was able to connect to the internet again. I mentioned how slow it takes for pages to load. She said if I have two firewalls running that can happen, then eventually it blocks your internet connection. I have the free Avira and am only using the Windows Firewall. She said the Verizon router has a firewall but it's a low security. So I went on the internet was able to get on some sites, but then others wouldn't connect again, said there is no internet connection. All the lights on the router are on. So far it's still working, but this is what happened before when I lost my connection completely.

I have Windows XP, tried it both on IE 8 and Firefox. The router is an Actiontec MI42WR. The problem was with both my desktop and laptop wired connections.

I have a place on the outskirts of Tucson where there is no DSL and no cable Internet. Dialup connects at 28.8K.

I use a local wireless ISP that provides near broadband service. This is my second year using that method but lately I've run into problems which they seem unable to solve.

Here's the situation:

When using my browser(fully updated Firefox), I can connect only to and is an email provider that I use. I can use a Cisco VPN client to connect to the University at Buffalo system.

My Thunderbird email client can locate and deal with my email accounts at UB and Softhome as well as my wife's email account at Softhome.

My Outlook Express email client cannot locate my work-related email.

I don't know if this is relevant, but UB and Softhome use IMAP email servers while the work-related one uses a POP3 server.

When using my browser, I CAN NOT connect with ANY other website. If I go to Google, the screen slowly paints down until about halfway through the multicolored Google logo then quits. If I try to reload the page, I get the "Server not found" message that appears at all websites (so far) aside from the two mentioned above.

I have discussed this with the company that provides wireless Internet service to the office I work at in Buffalo. Even the senior techs couldn't imagine what could cause a "two sites only" Internet experience.

I'm going back to AZ in a few weeks... Read more

Answer:Can connect to only TWO websites!

My problem is remarkably similar to one reported on a thread started by member chinc that has been closed without apparent resolution: Internet Explorer 6: Won't connect to website, but still can ping website

I, too, can ping successfully to sites that I cannot visit, both by name and by IP address. Sorry to have forgotten that point.

I have an IBM 340 (P166) running Win95, I can dial into my ISP ok (actually I've tried 2 different ISP's) but can't access any websites. Tried both NS and IE browsers. I always get the "can't locate the server" error message. I've checked all the settings, and as far as I can tell, everything seems ok. I tried a laptop on this phone line and it connected to websites allright, so I know the problem is in the computer, not the phone line.
Any ideas?

Hello, a few months ago I had what I believe to be a rootkit which I successfully got rid of thanks to members of this forum. However since then, for some reason I can't connect to certain webpages. When I try to go on, for example, Gamespot, there is a white screen for about a minute telling me it is loading, and then it says something like 'the webpage timed out'. This happens to me with about a 1/4 of the websites I visit and its become a real pain. The strange thing is, if I run these websites through a proxy, they usually work fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I've been having problems for the past couple of weeks trying to connect to some websites. It is only SOME, not all websites. It will either say that it is taking too long to connect or that the website is experiencing problems. I have no idea where to start as i am pretty clueless when it comes to configuring/repairing network related issues. Please help!

Answer:Can't connect to some websites

Have you determined whether the websites are experiencing problems?

I'm not sure what is going on here. I can pull up some websites Yahoo, Google, Myspace, but others I can't. Example, for some reason I can't go to or at all! It comes up in IE8 as page can not be displayed. On Firefox it comes up as page timed out. I tried to ping it in cmd, and it just says timed out.
I have checked the firewall settings, the internet options settings, my virus protection settings, and there are no signs of any blocked sites. My antivirus program is showing there are no virus'. I'm not sure what to do at this point. It's just frustrating that I can go to some sites but not all sites.
Any suggestions?

Answer:Can't connect to some!

I don't know why but somehow when i try to connect to some websites (i.e., or my computer gets redirected to and of course i get the lovley file not found screen. usually this isn't too bad, it stops many pop ups and banner ads but sometimes i need to look at those pages, or rather links from other pages through them to get somewhere (Coupons, on-line shopping etc).

Anyway, i can't find any programs installed on my computer that would be redirecting it, the content advisor in I.E. isn't enabled, and i don't know how else to look. If i use my handheld i can access the page just fine so i know it's not my isp blocking or my DNS having the wrong address.

Does anyone know of a way to see what programs could be redirecting me, or a list of programs in specific i should look for that might be my problem?

Hi Recently I had a problem where I was getting a vast amount of popups, I ran spyware doctor which founf a virus and removed it. Since then I can't connect to certain websites. Some work fine, e.g I can connect to google, but it won;t carry out a search, I can;t reach hotmail or facebook. I have tried various virus/spyware removers such as c cleaner, spybot, ad-ware, avg and nothing new is found. Tried ipconfig /flushdns and still nothing. I have found a temp solution around the problem and that is to kill the explorer.exe process. When I do this everything works perectly, however I can't keep doing this and would prefer to get to the bottom of the problem, pls find attached my hijack this log, any help much appreciated. I did a search of similar problems but have not yet been able to figure this out. It is really frustrating.

I am unable to connect to certain websites. For example, I cannot connect to yahoo, facebook, and the motley fool sites.

I have a cable modem through Comcast, and a Linksys WRT150N wireless router. The connection is an automatically configured DCHP. It appears that the problem is with the router, as I can connect to these sites if I connect directly to my PC through the cable modem. The PC is connected with a ethernet cable. My laptop is able to connect to the websites wirelessly.

What I have tried: I have done a complete malware search. Typically, I keep my machine up-to-date and with anti-spyware, and virus software.

I have done the reset/reboot thing. Disabling the firewalls through the router or PC do not change the problem.

I also tried to change the MTU settings with no luck. I am able to ping/traceroute the sites without problems.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Cannot connect to certain websites

Try using different browswers, how many websites have problems? Do you edit your hosts file? I do this, and I found that if the website changed it's IP address, then I have to edit the file or delete entry.

Some sites when I try to go to them, the loading bar goes up a little tiny bit after a minute or so. Then finally I get the "cannot connect to page" screen. I am pretty sure the site isn't having too heavy a load for my connection. I have tried going to these sites from other PCs and they load instantly.

Hi Gunnartthehunter! I am having the same issue you were having and have read all communication between you and Curt down to #21 where you resolved the problem. I am having a problem understanding some: first of all, how do i get to the router homepage on the computer and should I be doing this from the laptop or the desktop (from what I understand this is from the desktop) Do I just write the address number in the address bar? Second question, what exactly do you mean when you say you plugged in the broadband cable at the last minute? Can you go into more detail for my non computer understanding self. I am not familiar with all this.

I have recently begun to have problems with Internet explorer. When I try to visit a web-page (google for instance) I get an error message saying :

'' is currently unavailable.

I can connect to the internet via other web-browsers (Firefox for example). I have recently disable several from starting up using system configuration -> Startup tab, but don't believe any of them should be having any effect on IE. Here is the list of the stuff I disabled:

Adobe Acrobat (Reader_sl.exe)
Dell Support (DSAgnt.exe)
Google Desktop (GoogleDesktop.exe)
MS Sidebar (sidebar.exe)
RealPlayer (realsched.exe)
WinampAgent (winampa.exe)
Adobe Reader Speed Launch (Reader~1.exe)
WinZip (WZQKPICK.exe)

Does anyone have any ideas?

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium, with 1GB of memory, and a 2Ghz Core 2 Duo processor.

Answer:IE cannot connect to any websites

Update: Before you ask, yes I did trying having all those programs (system configuration->startup) and it still has the same behavior. Just noticed that there were several windows updates recently

4 Update for Windows Vista (2 on 8/31, 2 on 8/30)
Windows Update Software 7.0.6000.381

Not sure if any of those could have caused it.

BTW, my computer is a Dell Inspiron E1505.

Hi All

I have had a search but cant seem to find anything related so hope someone can solve this for me.

Since I had a new server & software installed my internet connection intermittently drops and only a server reboot will get it going again (tried the router option) which takes about 10 mins (anyone know of a better solution to reset internet?)

Sometimes it is only a partial drop and we cannot access some websites like but can access it seems pretty random as to what I can and cant access.

The problem is network & server wide and workstations have AVG but server only has the windows firewall.

The computer reports that it is connected to the internet. The computer will not connect to any website.AVG reports no virus.Malware reports no malware. The drivers were loaded by The Geek Squad in mid-September when it wouldn't recognize the printer. The computer worked OK for a couple of days, then stopped doing the internet. I suspect I hit some "switch" inadvertently, but haven't been able to undo what I did or discern what the failure is. Purchased the computer in April. It was inactive from mid-June to lat-August.
