No space in shared files folder

Question: No space in shared files folder

Hi. I have been using my shared files folder to exchange files with the other computer I have at home, but I am trying to put a file in there and it tells me there is not enough disk space. The folder is empty. Why is that happening?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everyone,

I'm using a laptop (with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit installed) as a DVR and media streamer to all other devices in the house.
My TV recordings are recorded into a temporary folder and when the recording is finished the program moves the files into the My Videos folder.

The My Videos folder is shared so we can watch the recordings from the Xbox downstairs or other Windows 7 devices in the house.
This worked pretty well in the past but for some reason new recordings (or downloads) aren't shared by default anymore. All files have a small lock icon (shared with nobody) and I have to manually share new files within an already shared folder.

This is pretty annoying and takes away the convenience.

I would appreciate any tip to fix this problem to have all files in the shared folder(s) shared by default.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:New files aren't shared in shared folder

It's easy once you know how, just right click the C:/Video's folder and choose properties, Security tab then Advanced button, then just put a check mark where it says "Replace all Child Object Permission Entries with Inheritable Permissions Entries from this Object, then hit Apply, OK....this will fix the problem you described.

I have a Windows 7 PC that needs to back up to a network share. The built in Windows Backup utility can backup to the network share, but it cannot manage the data (delete old backups automatically).

What I'm looking for is recommendations for a FREE backup application that can backup to a network share AND automatically delete old backups when the disk is full. The ones I'm looking at can't seem to do this (Cobian/FBackup).

Also, something that can do System State would be good as well (for a couple servers).

*edit* Think I may just use iSCSI target on my server and connect to that so that I can fool Windows Backup into thinking it's a local drive, thus, it can manage backup space automatically.

I pinned the Files folder in my onedrive.live.com account to the Windows 10 Start menu, and also saved this folder as a favorite in Edge, which is my default browser. But after closing Edge, when I then click the onedrive.live.com tile in the start menu, or after opening Edge, if I click the OneDrive link in the favorites bar, OneDrive opens my Shared folder rather than the desired Files folder. To see the Files folder, I can click "OneDrive" in the menu bar. Moreover, after the Files folder has been opened, if I then add a tab and click on OneDrive in the favorites bar, OneDrive correctly opens the Files folder, and will continue to operate this way (the correct way) as long as I don't close the browser. When I saved my OneDrive Files folder as a favorite in Firefox, I experienced the same problem. So the problem does not appear to be related to Edge.
How can I make OneDrive.Live.com always open in the Files Folder the first time?

I have all 4 PC's in the office using Windows 7 Pro. I have one computer that is designated to house my share folder for scanning documents and attaching them to our management system.  We are finding that multiple problems occur - not at once and at
different times .  Sometimes, the document within the shared folder called "IMAGEBATCH" will not delete.  Sometimes that document deletes, and then re-appears within the IMAGEBATCH folder.  Sometimes the document will not
scan through the network to the IMAGEBATCH folder.  Sometimes we get an error saying we "don't have permission to delete this file".  These circumstances occur on all computers, including the computer that houses the original file IMAGEBATCH.
Sometimes in the day, each computer that is supposedly looking at the same IMAGEBATCH folder see different files.
Restarting the computer clears the problems, but then start right back up at irregular intervals, sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the middle of the day.
I did find a duplicate file named IMAGEBATCH on the "C" drive of that PC, so I deleted that, but the symptoms are still there.  This is the only shared folder in our entire network.  What can I be missing?  I have checked to make
sure it is a share folder, all the permissions are in place, and that we all can see the folder through the network.  What am I missing?  I am the owner and administrato... Read more

Hi
I've mapped some folders in my laptop (Windows 7 Professional 64-bit).
I wanted them offline so I chose make available offline. After some days I've removed 'Make available offline'.
Now, the problem is when I open a file in shared folder for modification it's taking a local copy the changes are not reflecting in server.
What I dont understand is when I removed offline, how am getting a local copy instead of the files in server.
Thanks.

I have a PC with Windows 8.1 and a Mac with Mavericks. I have a folder on the Mac that is shared with the PC. When I'm on the PC and I try to open a file that is shared by the Mac, such as an ISO file (a disk image), then I get a message saying that I cannot open the file, or the file is in use (it depends on the app/filetype). I have the same problem when I open a video file. Strangely, text files and PDF files are just fine. And if I copy any of the problematic files to the local Windows disk, then I can open them just fine.

The specific error messages are:

- AVI files opened in VLC: "Your input can't be opened. VLC is unable to open the MRL."
- ISO files opened by Windows Explorer: "Sorry, there was a problem mounting the file."

This only started happening after I upgraded to Windows 8.1 on the PC and Mavericks on the Mac. Mavericks upgraded its SMB version from SMB1 to SMB2, so perhaps that is related?
Does anyone know what the problem might be, and how I could fix it?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:W8.1: Can't open files on SMB folder shared by a Mac

Welcome to Eight Forums,

The upgrade seems to be an issue in your case. I'd suggest for you to download the latest driver from the manufacturer's site for your network adapter, see if that helps. I don't think that there's a way to revert your Maverick's SMB version.

Please post an update or your progress.

I have a folder on One drive that I have shared with a friend with one drive account.
Both accounts are personal. Is it possible for my friend to add files to the shared folder.

Yes, your friend can add files to your shared folder, provided you have the proper permission settings for the folder set up. On your PC, go to Onedrive and navigate to the folder you have shared, and click on "share", then "invite people", then add the people you want to allow, then change "recipients can only view" to "recipients can edit". Done!

Somehow files and folders in "Shared Documents" have become inaccessible through the directory tree. The only way to open "Shared Pictures" or "Shared Music" is through the hot link availabe under "Other Places" when "My Pictures", or the like, is open in an explorer window. When I try to access the folders and files through the directory tree I run into *.idx files. This is a new condition for me. Can anyone fill me in?

I am running windows XP and using the shared Dcoument folder to share JPEG files on two other computers. When I go to the other computers to open the Files (jpeg) the folders are showing up along with the thumbnail of the picture - not the actual picture just a Icon. I tried viewing the folder in different views but i get nothing just the Icon.
Is it a setting on the main computer that needs to be checked in order to see the JPEG files
on the other computers.

Hi,
On my home network with 4 PCs I can access all shared files with no problems except from one PC. This PC is running XP SP3 and any files in the folder when it is shared are available and can be opened no problem but any new files moved to or created in this folder are can't be accessed by any of the other computers, as in "Windows media player cannot access this file. The file might be in use, you might not have access" and so on.
Never met this before on my others systems new files and old files are all available as long as they are in a shared folder.
Thanks for any suggestions

Hello all, thanks for your help.

Goal :
Sharing a Vista 64 Home Premium Folder with an XP Laptop.

Problem :
XP can view folders, but not files, in the Vista Shared Folder. Files that were in the folder when sharing was setup in Vista are accessible, but new files are not displayed. New Folders do display, however.

System Setup :
MSHOME network, Vista private network sharing of a single directory. Vista connected by cable, XP laptop by Wireless.

Already Done :
- Triple-Checked Permissions (guest, everyone, etc.)
- Normal Vista Sharing configuration in place
- Checked through specific settings for 'guest' and 'everyone' access of the folder, including 'read files..'
- Checked the net in detail..no luck

The folder I'm sharing is a P2P download folder. Sharing doesn't work properly when the program is on or off, so it doesn't seem to affect anything.

Other things I've done :
- Turned 'indexing' on
- Made sure 'read only' was not enabled under folder settings.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
acijanos

Answer:Vista Shared Folder Files not Updating

Update :

The P2P stuff isn't a factor - created a new directory and shared - same problem.

I'm wondering if it may have something to do with XP. (service pack 3)

Its real wierd.

Im using one pc with windows 7 and another with XP.
When I copy a file on the pc with win7 to the shared folder, I can see and access the file fine from the XP pc.

However, when I move (Ctrl+X) a file to the shared folder on the pc with win7, the file does not apear when I go to the shared folder from the XP pc.

Anyone knows what Im doing wrong?

BY THE WAY, is there a way to share the entire C drive or we are strict to the public folders? Its wierd that I gave full access permissions to the C drive, yet an error occurs while trying to access from XP. Only the public folders can be accessed.

You still need to allow premission to access the shared files on the Win7 machine. Just set up permissions on the Win7 machine by going to "Network and sharing center" and then to the left choose "Change Advance sharing settings". The select the settings in the pictures below.

You should also have access to the entire C drive once you do that.

I've been using my XP machine as my file server and it works perfectly.

I have two computers, a desktop running Windows 7 Professional and a netbook running Windows 7 starter edition. I have shared some folders on the netbook and can access them from the desktop computer. However, I am unable to share folders on the desktop. From the netbook, I can see the desktop on my network and also the shared folders, but when I try to open them I am told I have insufficient authorization to so so. I have checked the authorizations on the desktop side and can see that "Everyone" has permission to open these folders for reading, and that the authorization extends also to subfolders and files.

I've been trying all day to resolve this problem and would appreciate any help.

When I set up these permissions, why doesn't Windows warn me that there's something else that will impede what I'm trying to do?

Answer:Insufficient authorization to see files in shared folder

You might try going into the Security tab of the Desktop's main drive or folder you want to share then add "Everyone" there as well. Security tab>Edit button>Add button>type Everyone for object name, apply, ok and so forth.

Hi all,

This is a problem that's been bothering me for days. I use an older computer (Windows XP Professional, SP2) that's relatively slow, but has a decent amount of disk space to store some of my files. While I store files on there, I prefer to access the files using my newer computer (Windows XP Home, SP2) since it's faster to extract/unzip files.

I can access all the folders & subfolders in the Shareddocs directory of my old computer perfectly, *except* ZIP/RAR files. Once I unzip the archive, my new computer can access all the files. But if I try to use my new computer to unzip the archives, it's telling me that it cannot find the file & that I don't have permissions for it.

So far, I've tried unchecking the "Simple File Sharing" box, and checking the permissions, and I have given everyone Full Control on my old computer. But I am still unable to extract/view the archives.

Any idea what might be wrong? I can just unzip everything on the old computer, but it's so horrendously slow I'd like some sort of solution to this.

Thanks in advance!

I am running winows 7 ultimate 32bit as a server, i have the c:\ drive shared to all 13 users on the network. All 13 computers are running windows xp pro. The problem that I am having is this:

When i open up the shared c: drive on a windows xp computer, and open a folder to view files, it only shows 122 out of the 227 files.

Trying to find a solution to this issue.

2 XP Media Center SP3 PCs connected via Ethernet to router. PC A has Shared Documents folder with permissions set to allow 'Everyone' Full Control. Only Windows Firewall onboard, NOD32 virus scanner. PC B can see/open files from share on PC A, but any attempts to move or copy result in error message "your current security settings do not allow this action". Both PCs have IE6, File & Print Sharing enabled and turning off Windows Firewall doesn't change anything. What else can I try? Thanks.

Answer:Moving/copying files from shared folder causes error

Make sure you have the permissions set on both the Security tab as well as the Sharing tab.

On the shared folder security permissions, make sure that you go to the Advanced settings and check the box that tells it to replace the permissions on child objects as well.

Hi Guys,

I am migrating my user's home folders from one storage server to another storage server. We have offline files sync enabled and users use to work at work in offline mode and the files/folders sync when they connect to the company's network.
I have done some testing before migrating and found an issue that need assistance from your guys.

I pick a test user say "Testuser01" and logout him out from the system. I have copied all home drive stuff from Sharedserever-1 (Old) to Sharedserever-2 (New) for test user and make the required changes in AD profile and GPO for drive mapping. As
the Testuser01's documents pointing to H-drive (My Documents) are available offline on laptop in Documents folder. Now I have worked offline as "tesetuser01" and created some test files but when I logged in and connected
with my company's network H-drive is it correctly pointing to new Sharedserever (i.e. Sharedserever-2) and Documents path also redirected to the new server location. However the files created in offline mode were disappeared instead of sync with
the new Sharedserever.
I could not figure out why and I don't know if it something with CSC - Client-Side Caching folder ?
Any help would be appreciated.

I am currently trying to add all the missing artwork. a lot of my artwork can be seen in WMP but not itunes. I know how to get the album art into itunes but when i look at the shared network folder on the laptop it doesnt show any files except for the ripped music files. I've been using file and printer sharing for quite a while on various home networks, but this problem has me completely stumped.

I have one folder on each of 2 Windows XP Pro machines shared. I can access some of the files in this shared folder but not others. The problem is not specific to size (some are larger, others are small) or type (some are EXE's, others are .TXT's). I simply get the "Access denied" error when trying to open, run, or copy some of the files.

I've tried deleting the folder and re-creating it, and that doesn't work. I've disabled Windows firewall on both systems. That didn't work either.

Additional Note:
Performing a net user * /DELETE has no effect on the share that is not working properly. Also when performing a new use the share does not appear in the list.

I keep having a re-occurring issue.

I start by creating a shared folder on a Windows 2000 Server. From my Windows XP Pro laptop I'm able to access the files in the shared folder. At some point either from logging off the network or network changes that occur over night, I lose share. By losing the share I mean that I can access the folder that is shared but it does not show any files in the folder even though there are files. If I turn off the server, I get the same empty folder results. I've tried registering and flushing the DNS several times and reassigning my IP address. I'm at a loss as to why the share will not show any files. If I create a new share on the same server it will work fine until I leave for the day and return the next day. I would like to understand more about how shares are created and handled in Windows and then I might be able to figure out why this problem is occurring.

Thanks,
Mark

Hello,
I'm encountering a problem on different computers.
Internet Explorer 11 and Edge are not able to open files from a shared folder located on the same computer.
For example, let's say I typed this "\\10.100.100.10\folder_1\DOC_FILE.doc" on the address bar.
The browser then shows : "This page can't be displayed".
When I display more information, the error "INET_E_RESOURCE_NOT_FOUND" appears.
I have already tried to uncheck "Enable TCP Fast open" and it is still not working.
It seems like this problem cannot be reproduced on all IE11/EDGE browsers, and can be encountered on both Windows 7 and Windows 10.
Any ideas ?
Best regards

Hi,

I have shared one folder and in security I added "everyone" and given full permission (full control, write, etc.)

But still I cannot access some pdf files in the folder from another computer. I can open the folder but when I try to open the pdf file I'm getting some permission error. Then I went to the first computer I selected all pdf files >> right click >> properties >> I changed security and added everyone there. Then I could open the pdf files from another computer.

Now the problem is every time when I add some files in the shared folder. I have to select all the files inside and add permission even though the folder itself is given full permission. I wonder why is it so?

Answer:shared folder with full permission cannot access files inside

If the same users access this folder. Add each person individually with Full Control rather then the Everyone Group to the permissions of the folder. Or You can add the users to the Power Users Group. Then allow the Power Users Group to have Full control.

I have a computer running Vista Home Premium. On it, I have a folder shared read-only over the network as "downloads."

I can access the folder from other computers on the LAN, using \\computer\downloads. My problem is, sometimes the browsing computer (an XP Pro SP3 machine) will get an outdated list of the directory.

For instance, I have added many files in the past couple of weeks. Yet, for some reason, even today one of the computers would show the most recent file as being from late January. I've tried refreshing and shift-refreshing. Doesn't help.

What's weird is that this behavior seems to vary from client computer to client computer. One of my XP Pro SP3 machines will have the most-recent list of files, and the other one will still be a little bit behind, not showing the newest files.

I can't figure this out! I would think that the problem must lie on the side of the client, yet I have never had this problem previously in all my years of XP-to-XP file sharing.

Is there some sort of network cache present in XP that can be cleared? Or any other ideas on how to solve this?

Thanks!

Answer:Browsing shared folder over LAN sometimes shows outdated list of files; sometimes OK

It's not unnatural for what shows in My Network Places (XP) or Network (Vista) to be out of date, but usually not that out of date. In My Network Places click 'view workgroup computers' and you should force an update.

On any (properly working) network one computer becomes the Master Browser. It determines what's on the network and periodically updates the other computers.

I wasn't sure whether to put this in the XP subforum or the Vista/7 one, as it relates to both. Hope I made the right choice. :-)

My problem is this: I have a Windows 7 Ultimate desktop (recently upgraded from Vista Home Premium) with a C:\downloads\ folder that is shared over the network as "downloads."

On a second computer, an XP computer, one I set up the correct sharing permissions (that is, to give access to Computer 2's username), I can then browse to \\desktop\downloads\.

The problem is this: The file list show in \\desktop\downloads\ is outdated, and many files and folders are missing. There is nothing special about these files or folders. They're not hidden or anything.

For instance, opening up C:\downloads\ on my desktop shows a folder with 3,118 items -- files and folders.

Accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from another computer shows 111 items.

Interestingly, accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from the desktop shows the correct amount: 3,118 items.

I have tried refreshing the file list, obviously, from the second computer. I have also tried accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from a third computer (also XP) on the same network, with similar problems... leading me to believe the problem is on the Windows 7 computer.

The W7 desktop has no problem accessing other shares.

I should also add that all three of these computers are on the same workgroup and can ping each other.

Also, as a test, I created a brand-new folder, C:\downloads2\,... Read more

When I try to rename a folder on the D: partition that used to be a Windows XP recovery partition that has some Pokemon commissions in it, I get this message.
"This folder is shared with other people
If you rename this folder, it will no longer be shared."

But the folder is not shared nor has it ever been.

What is going on? Why does Windows 7 think that it is shared?

Answer:“This folder is shared with other people” when renaming not shared folder

Hello there,

This happens because of the way the Access Control List is queried by Windows Explorer to determine if the folder is shared. Because this folder you tried to rename is a child folder of a parent folder and the two folders have a different security entries, Windows will treat as a shared folder. This causes Explorer to give you the warning that you received.

Just double check, this must be a shared folder.

Hope this helps!

I have a Visual Basic 6 app that reads files from a shared network folder and then processes them.  It was installed on two Windows XP computers many years ago.  Now we want to upgrade it to Windows 7.  I have two different computers with
Windows 7.  When I connect the Windows 7 computers to the network and run the app (which has a File Watcher window) and am watching all 4 computers, I noticed that the File Watcher window of the XP boxes show the files about 2 seconds before the Windows
7 boxes see the files.  What would cause this?  Everything else in the app works as it should.
The apps are running as Administrator on the Windows 7 boxes and XP compatiblility mode.  I have tried it both ways.
Confused...

I have my Public Desktop folder set to share for everyone, so it can be accessed from other pc's on the home network. But when I move a file from my user desktop to the public desktop it suddenly adds the lock icon over it and can't be accessed from another pc, even though the public desktop still can. I have to change the permissions on the file every time, although this never used to be the case. I used to be able to move a file to the public desktop without having to manually "share" it each time.

All settings look correct: Sharing is enabled for the folder and set for full control "everyone", and public folder sharing is turned on.

Again, this just started and was working fine before. Would one of the recent security patches have changed something?

Answer:Files moved to shared public folder "locked"

I'm not sure how this could occur but in order for the Public folders to be shared you need to enable sharing through the Sharing tab of the main Public folder, otherwise anything placed in one of it's subfolders won't be sharable.

If the share is being moved from a folder with a lock then moving that folder to a Public folder won't remove the lock.

The main Public folder is located at the C:\Users\Public and should appear like the picture.

Hey everyone.

I use both Linux (Ubuntu 10.04, 2.6.33-AMD64) and Windows 7 professional, and sometimes I get a little boggled at the apparent lack of functionality in W7 in the following situation.

I have a network share in the root of my drive that I've called "DropBox" where my boss and I can both put files to be shared via the network. I have a bunch of files in "Downloads" directory that I'd like to be able to share at various times, but would rather not have my downloads directory directly shared as it violates my sense of order. IE, I would much rather have one shared folder from which you can reach all the other content I need to share on the drive, and if I need to un-share something, simply delete the shortcut, and Voila! instant anti-sharing.

Figure 1. Clean Sharing

In Ubuntu, you can create a symlink within a shared folder that points to a non shared folder which allows network users to access that non-shared folder.

Does this functionality exist in W7?

Thanks,
NYTCG

Answer:Shared Shortcut to non-shared folder.

Okay, so I solved this issue on my own =) TGFG! The answer lies in the MKLink command.

Specifically: mklink /D /J Downloads "C:\Users\Robert\Downloads\"

Works like a charm. All networked machines have access to my non-shared directory through the shared folder, and it looks nice and clean on the viewers end.

Thanks for letting me rubber duck this one.

And no amount of free-to-use scanning I have done thus far detected a virus.

Whatever virus this is, it seems to effect the amount of memory I can use slowing down my computer and causing me crashes in Team Fortress 2.

It also disabled my sound driver.

It has yet to do anything more than annoy me from what I can tell, and it may yet be a hacker.

I share files on my home network between my desktop PC and my laptop. I often move files between the two computers by placing folders on the desktops and then working with them or moving them to specific folders. The network for my laptop lists its desktop folder, but for the desktop PC, the topline \Users root folder is listed, not the desktop. Network and sharing work just fine. But how do I list the shared PC desktop folder so that I don?t have to drill down through the \Users file structure to reach the desktop folder?

Hello there.

I've been using this office computer for more than 2 years ago.It has win98 second edition. And it's slow,so what I think was it has viruses,so I uninstalled the old antivirus[think it was mcafee] and added AVG free edition.

My problem is that everyday it always finds new viruses in my pc,and I always had to move them to the virus vault[heal wasn't available].
It's look always like this in the same folders, other are from other places on the pc.

C:\Program files\common files\microsoft shared\paris hilton porno pics archive xxx.exe
C:\Program files\common files\yahoo!\shared\anna benson sex video.exe

I also tried Panda online active scan.

Need help on what to do.
I'll post the active scan log and hjt as i saw in other posts regarding viruses.

I can't seem to predict when XP Pro SP2 will let me move a folder from SharedDocs\My Videos
to C:\ and when it won't! I don't get it. If I'm Owner don't I own it already?

Sometimes I can just grab the folder that I copied from another machine and placed in My Videos and just
drag it with the Left Mouse Button into another folder on C:\ and it just moves it by changing the directory entries. Then sometimes when I do that, it copies all the files!! Well with video files that's pretty slow!!

Anyone have a clue? Seems to be no rhyme or reason to it.

Answer:Move Folder Out Of Shared Folder Same Drive Wants To Copy?

Hello MilesAhead,I'm not absolutely sure, but some of the phrases in your problem description seem to indicate that this might be a variation of the "XP + mouse movement + mouse buttons + keyboard keystrokes" behavior described in the following post. The post deals with the unexpected copying of files when trying to delete them, but I thought the same (or a similar) principle might apply with respect to moving files/folders. Hi, I'm trying to open My Pictures on my wife's laptop but I get this error message Your folder can't be shared. This also happens to other folders on the laptop. I've tried to change Security Settings but it usually leads me to an endless layer of pop ups which finally ends with me being unable to change the setting. This is my wife's private home laptop and you can just imagine how important it is to be able to view pictures and videos of our grandchildren. I just need to relax the high security settings and make this work. Any help at all would be so appreciated.

Thank you,

I recently made a folder to share with an XP machine. When I look at the network through my seven machine I see the folder I shared and the USERS folder shared as well. Why is that?

I have the network setup at a home network. 7100 32 bit.

Answer:Why is the User folder shared when you share a folder?

I believe vista did this as well. So Windows 7 doesnt' work any differently from Vista in this regards.

Hi guys,
I have a shared folder which contains many folders for many users on
my network and to make users folders recognisable we chose to fix a
folder picture of every folder with the picture of the folder owner.
The problem is that those folders never have a constant folder picture
on all of my network computers as the picture always changes for some
reason, I've tried to set permissions on thumb.db file and also tried
fiddling with desktop.ini file but no use. Any ideas would be much
appreciated. Thanks.

I am running into an issue with users renaming files on a shared drive. When the users try to rename, they get the error "A file name can't contain any of the following characters: \ / : * ? < > |". However, neither the new or old filename contains
any of these characters, or any other invalid characters as far as I can determine, just alphanumeric characters and spaces. When they try to rename it again, it works without an issue.
I have found reports of this error being generated if the file path is too long, but all users are accessing this from a shared drive, and even if the share name is taken into account the file path and name are easily under 100 characters.
I have 3 users on 3 different systems reporting this issue, so I don't think it is user error.
The workstations are running Windows 7 Pro, SP1. The server is Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise, Service Pack 2.
The users are located at a remote site, and accessing the share over a site to site VPN. There are XP workstations at the site as well, that do not appear to be having the issue.
Any help, suggestions, or guidance is greatly appreciated!

I need a network tool that will scan my shared drive to see who my biggest offenders are. I had 30gb of space the other day and now have 500mb.

This is crazy....I'm not sure who is doing it, but I need to find out. Does anyone have a recommendation for a scanning tool that I can use to find who, what, and where these files are located?
Preferably freeware.....

Thanks !!!!!

Answer:shared drive getting low on space

Hi

To find what files are using space on a shared drive is easyish and can use a tool like WinDirStat or Jdiskreport

But to know what user has saved these files could be more long winded as in you may need to do as simple as right click and properties on the large new files to see the security properties as to the user who saved it, or its possible this Network tool may help, last time I used it I was not needing to do the task you wanted and I'm not on a network at present to test.

But worth a try as its free Desktop Central HERE

We are a small company.  We are running six windows 8 computers.  Our secretary works from home, the rest of us are in the same office.

The Admin Computer stores all of our work files within a folder called 'casework' (about 400GB).   The 'casework' folder is shared on the office network.  This 'casework' folder is also synced by Google Drive.

When our secretary works on her home computer and makes a new file, e.g. letterV2, the new file downloads to our 'casework' folder to the Admin Computer here at the office.  However, the new file cannot been seen on our other computers over the office
network.

The newly created files are not shared to 'everyone' unless I un-share 'casework' from the network and then share 'casework' again.

The problem seems to be that the new files added by Google Drive are not inheriting the permissions of the 'casework' folder.

There are no options to change in Google Drive.  Is this a Windows8 problem? Will Windows10 have a fix for this? Are there any work arounds? Does our secretary need to work at the office?

Yours Hopefully

Matt

Answer:New files downloaded from cloud storage into shared folders don't inherit shared permissions for "Everyone"

may I know how that work case folder sync with google drive?

I suggest you contact Google drive first, we have limitation information regarding this product.

You can proof that there is no issue for sharing folder within your office network
I think that's not how online share drive work, unless your secretary can join your office network trough internet
http://www.howtogeek.com/196435/how-to-share-files-and-folders-from-your-cloud-storage-folder/
this is the example, you can ask your secretary to send file trough share drive and assign 1 admin to sync and send it to your case work folder

Hi,
I've laptop with preinstall vista, later I've install ( successfully ) opensuse11.
Very smart way opensuse install itself and create space for own and shrink vista partition....
Now partition look like this ....
78 - vista
02 - maybe swap partition for suse
20 - don't here may be suse files
39 - don't know could be free space

so I want that 39gb (it is in linux) to be accessible to vista also..., so wat I've to do????????

Answer:SPACE shared b/w vista & opensuse

OK, I'd like to help you with this. Start by opening Disk Management in Vista and report what it says about the 39GB partition. Disk Management can be accessed through the Control Panel under Administrative Tools - "Create and format hard disk partitions." I'm guessing suse made an OS partition (20GB) and a "home" partition (39GB) which is where it stores your files. IF it is EXT2, then the easiest option would be to teach Windows to recognize EXT2 filesystem by installing a program called EXT2 IFS.

Hi

I have a strange problem, I can`t seem to fix.
I have a shared folder with many sub folders.
If I access this from another computer, it just shows some of
the folders (ex: of 120 it shows 15).
For another folder on the same server, with the same setup, it`s
not at problem.

I have checked the sharing permissions, and all of them are the same
on both shared folders.

All run Win 7 Ultimate.
Router: TP-Link TL-WR941ND, with DD-WRT v24-sp2 (11/21/10) std - build 15778
Server connected with cable, laptop via WiFi. (But tried with cable on both,
no difference)
All use Windows Firewall and Security Essentials.

And this are the same problem on all computers that's trying to open that folder.

This all happened after a reinstall of Windows.

I received a warning message on my Sony Vaio laptop to clear up space because I'm running out of it.  I looked on my C drive and was down to 9.34 GB of hard drive space out of 500GB.  I know I'm at least supposed to have 150-200 GB's left.  So then I proceeded to delete a few 1gb+ files(even cleared them out of the recycle bin) and went to check if I had more space and nothing changed.  So I decided to update Malwarebytes when I notice that my drive space is still decreasing to 8GB's now.

Next I decide to reboot in safe mode with networking.  I update Malwarebytes again and it picks up nothing after a full scan.  So then I decide to update and run SuperAntiSpyware Portable.  It actually picks up two registry entries from BHO-FBI Money Pak and some tracking cookies. I quarantine those files and boot back in regular mode and I notice the drive is still losing space.  I figure their has to be something wrong because when I'm in safe mode with networking their is about 137GB of space left on the drive.  I'm confused as to what to do next?  This is very weird.

Answer:I can't recover disc space when deleting files, space keeps fluctuating

If User 'X' is login he will not view user 'y' shared folder?. Is this possible.

Hi ,
We have NT 4 server w/ Win98 desktops.
I am attempting to go paperless.
I would like to create a shared folder that will allow my
students to drop their assignemnts into it , but not allow
them to open the folder or see/opne the other files, thus allowing them to acces the
other student's files.
I have tried (on the NT server)giving the students:
1. Add: write & execute (WX)
2. Add & Read: read, write & execute (RWX)

I have also tried sharing from a Win98 desktop.

Sometime I can access the folder on the desktop but not via an app (i.e.Word)
What I end up with is either a folder they can't access
or a folder that they can get to everything.

I rememebr setting up a "Drop box" many years ago with
Apple share.
How do I do this with NT 4 or Win 98?
Thanks.

Hello,

I am using Windows XP Professional SP2. I recently lost my shared folder shortcuts under the my computer window. I can navigate to it through c:/documents and settings etc. but for some reason theres no shortcuts to it anywhere else on this computer. I even reformatted and reinstalled and still the same issue. What would make it disappear like that? Is there some quick fix I could do such as copying some sort of registry entry from another PC that would restore back to where its supposed to be by default? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I have NT as does the other computer in my office. We have been sharing files for months, and something has happened that is now preventing me from accessing the other computer. Windowns Firewall and AV is turned off, as we use a router. I can go to the other computer and confirm that the folders I need access to are shared and can be edited by others. I return to my computer and when I try to browse to that folder get the following: "\\server\foldername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the admin... Not enough server storage is available to process this command." Both computers have lots of memory and disk space.

(This is my first posting... be gentle.)

Answer:A shared folder isn't available that use to be

Should be a security tab when you right-click on a folder. You may have to be logged as an administrator or in safe mode to access it. Check that permissions are correctly allowed for the other account.

I'm not 100% certain about this since I've never used NT, if I'm wrong... be gentle

If you are running homegroup you need to change it. Homegroup is for win 7 machines only and it uses IPv6. For networks with mixed environments workgroup is a better alternative. to test for yourself create a new network connection using workgroup and if it works disable Ipv6 and kill homegroup

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

What version of Office are you trying to install (e.g, 2003 or 2007)?

Have you changed any file permission settings or "Taken Ownership" of any folders/files?

The "scan disk" that you mentioned running... was it "sfc /scannow"? If not, click on START | type cmd.exe in the Start Search box | right-click on cmd.exe | select Run as Admin

In the screen that comes up type the following:

sfc /scannow (space after sfc) - press ENTER

Let this run. Try Office re-install.

Good Luck. . .

Hi,

after installing a Canon printer driver, I am now getting an error:

Cannot access C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ink the file directory is corrupted.
I have tried running scan disc and it doesn't work and have tried from the command window and it stops 73% through and say can't go any further to maintain system integrity. I have also tried restoring from a back-up but it wont let me as well.

Any suggestions?

Hi there,

I have installed microsoft office 07 when first getting my laptop late last year and have had no problem until today. I find this appearing on my laptop upon trying to open up any microsoft office program: Error 2330. Setup cannot get attirbutes for the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Smart Tag\LISTS. Verify that the file exists in your system and that you have sufficient permissions to update it.

When trying to open windows live messenger i get this message: The file or directory\Program files\common files\microsoft shared is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility and the same goes for trying to open winRAR and notepad.

I have tried to do the chkdsk utility but on cmd, was told access denied since i do not have sufficient privileges and need to invoke this utility running in elevated mode.

I should also add that my sister was using my laptop today and told me that these error messages came up when she first opened the laptop and said that my log on was even corrupted! (Note: I normally put my laptop to sleep but when my sister opened it this morning it had restarted instead of just waking up as it normally does)

Sorry for the long post but i thought I should be as detailed as i can even though i know very little about computers...

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Hel3nz

Hi, I use my Norton windows scan and I keep getting the message C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\DLLShared." I talked to Gateway Tech and they told me to back up all files and I did on a previous problem but one disc, the second one was corrupt (so it said). I lost everything. I am afraid to do this again they suggest I redo my windows from the very begining that always seems to be there answer. I cannot afford to lose data now. I am having that error message come up and I cannot use my send to drive E to copy discs properly so I got the updated version of Rioxio since the one I had was out dated so I moved up to Roxio 6 and I cannot do anything as far as coping files to disc. I am upset because a very important file is stuck in Roxio 6 that has my excel spreedsheet and it will not let me open it or copy it to CD. I hope this made sense. Please help if you can. I am running a gateway 700XL with XP Thanks

I have a HD that I have been using for a while as a shared HD to two TV systems in other areas of the house. One is via PS3 and the other is via DVD. Within the HD there are hundreds of folders and files and they "all" share just fine. However, I recently added a couple more similiar files and an additional folder to this HD for sharing and they are not seen by either TV system. Weird. The property settings for this folder and files is the same as for all the others. It's almost as if I can't add new stuff........

Anyone with thoughts on selective "seeing"?
pete

Answer:Solved: one folder of many can't be shared or seen by my PS-3.

Turns out all I had to do was "restart" my computer (to which the HD is attached) and that made everything "visible" on the shared drive at my PS3.

Just reinstalled XP on one of my desktops after finally giving up on Vista and are having problems accessing any shared folders. This is the error message I am getting:I have Googled and tried various suggestions, checked firewall,workgroup,netbios,pinter/file sharing and a couple of other things but no luck. The odd thing is I also have a piece of software from PureNetworks (cisco) which usually takes all the hard work out of networking my PC's but cannot share through that either. I can access other PC's on the network it is just the newly shared.

Answer:Cannot access shared folder.

Sorry folks, managed to sort it by following these instructions.click here

I connect to a shared folder, entering the userid/password when requested. All good. I would like to change userid to a different userid and reconnect to the same folder. How do I disconnect from the shared folder so that next time I connect I get the prompt to enter userid/password? I have looked at the credential manager -- nothing is saved there. I am not using a mapped drive thus "disconnect" does not show up on the context menu. I found the very well hidden stored password manager (rundll32.exe keymgr.dll, KRShowKeyMgr) and nothing is stored there. All I want to do is login as a different user. My userid/password seem to be "cached" somewhere. I also tried the following experiment. I changed my password on the server. I was prompted to enter userid/password. Good. I changed my password back to the previous password. I could access the share without entering userid/password. Thanks all!

Answer:How to logout from shared folder

Hi,

Please also try the following steps. Please restart the machine after performing each step and check the result.

1. Type the following command in Command Console:

Net use * /DELETE

2. Open Credential Manager and clear all saved user or password. Then, please access network shared folder.

3. Temporarily disable Workstation service and restart it again.

Hope this helps.

In the process of setting up a 20 computer closed network using a workgroup running xp-pro. All 20 show up in "Workgroup" and I can "click on" each computer and have access to shared folders on all but 3. On these 3, when I "clickon" the computer, a login window appears(which I don't want). I thought I had setup all the machine in the same fashion, but apparently I didn't. Is there a setting, checkbox or something that I'm missing? Thanks.

Hey, I just registered here today because I could not find any answers to this problem I have with my computer. Everytime I try to open my shared folder a windows explorer message appears. It does it everytime I try to open it. Then it shuts out the window where I tried to open it. On occasions, when I reach the folder, the error appears, and I haven't even clicked on my shared folder. This started to happen a few days ago when I was running Limewire. I tried watching a video, then Limewire shut itself off and quit running. I cannot open it up either. I have uninstalled it and Java, and reinstalled both, but to no avail. I do not know what is wrong with my computer, it's been acting strange lately.

Answer:Can't open Shared Folder

it would help if you could specify the error message...

I am not sure what the deal is but on my main machine I have 5 drives internally, 2 SCSI, 2 IDE, and 1 SATA.
I have folders shared on all the drives and everyone can access all the shares except for the shares on the 2 IDE drives.
computers see the shares but when I try and open the shared folder I get an error.

This is what it says:
\\HAL-9000\Temp is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permission.

Not enough server storage is available to process this command"

any ideas on what could be the cause?

My second machine was SCSI, IDE, and SATA as well and it shared all folders fine. It is now IDE and SATA and all shares work great.

I'm not sure about this error, but I think that the easiest way to get around these problems is to put the user's log-in and password into the sharing computer. Its an easy fix, but it works. The only problem is that you'll have to update the password on the shared box every time you change the password on the client.

and thats a pretty cool name for a computer. I'm surprised I haven't seen it anywhere else - maybe people are scared that if they name their computer HAL-9000, then their computer will try to kill them

Hi,

I've encountered a very odd thing here. I have a PC that runs on windows XP Pro and it's connected to domain server.

What happens is that when i was trying to access to files on the server, i typed in \\192.168.4.10 to the address on windows explorer. It failed with the following message

"\\192.168.4.10 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resources... The network is not present or not started."

Then, i checked to see if i could get onto the internet. yes, the internet's working. I run windows command prompt and run ping to the server's IP address and got replies back from the server. Everything seemed to be OK. I couldn't think of anything that might be the cause.

After that, i tried to access to the server again but this time by a different mean. I went to windows explorer and then click on "My Network Places". I found the shared folder on the server there and clicked on it and it worked. I could get in with no hassle at all. So what's wrong with typing in the IP address to the windows explorer. Very strange one.

Has anyone had a similar issue like i have before and might be able to help me out?

THank you in advance

Answer:Can't access to shared folder

Need help with a network share issue.

I have 2 Win7 PC?s running on a home network. I have various folders set up for shared access across the network and they work fine. However, I run a game on the main PC with add-ons that run on the 2nd PC. They run OK and connect with each other, but to get full functionality the add-on on the 2nd PC needs to be able to access the game folder on the main PC another.

The game folder is in the Program Files (x86) folder and I have set it up as a share. The PC and the shared folder appears in the network section on the 2nd PC. However, when I try to access it, it tells me that Windows cannot access the location because I do not have the permissions etc. I have checked and re-checked the share settings on the main PC and they seem to be OK.

All the oher folders I have shared are fine, eg My Doc, Music etc.

At a loss with this.
Andrew

I have 3 PCs on a network using Windows 10. I have a shared folder on one PC. Of the other 2 PCs, one can access the folder and the other cannot. The one that cannot is asking for network credentials. Just the other day the 2 PCs could access the shared folders. I did not set this up but I need to resolve it for my friend who also did not set it up.

Answer:Cannot access a shared folder on another PC

When it asks you need to give it a username and password for an account on the PC your connecting to. If you turn off password for the sharing it shouldn't happen

I apologize if this is in the wrong area.
So I'm running win xp mode on my win 7 computer and I have a shared folder to pass files between them. The folder's drive letter is S:
Every time I restart my win 7 the S drive disappears and I have to re-share it through command prompt.
Any suggestions? To initially share it in command prompt I used this: subst S: C:\WinXP
I mapped the folder in win xp so that isn't a problem right now, I just need that S drive on win 7 not to disappear when I log off or restart the machine.

I'm having no luck making a Windows 7 folder write accessible to XP. I've turned off password protected sharing and given both "Everyone" and "Guest" read/write permission. I can access the folder, but whenever I try to transfer a file to it, I get:

"Error Copying File or Folder - Cannot copy ____: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."

Any suggestions?

I have 15 computers connecting to the Windows 7 workstation yet I experienced the error message: 'An error occured while re-connecting.No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as the computer can accept'

I have been reading about the limitation and learning that there is no way around the 20 limitation. I am also seeing that an external hard drive connected through USB to the workstation is also limited to 20.

Question regarding the limit of 20 - are we talking about simultaneous 20 users accessing the file folder and the sub folders? Or are we talking about 20 mapped computers? Has there been a solution around this limitation?

Answer:Shared Folder 20 Limitation

As far as I remember it is concurrent. That would also include mapped drives I believe. The problem is that although the user may logout (turn of their machine etc) Windows won't always drop that share so you may have to reboot the machine acting as a server.

The solution would be to migrate to Windows server or use a NAS for the shares.
