OMG! I need major help! Win XP stuck, NO safe mode, I need my files!

Question: OMG! I need major help! Win XP stuck, NO safe mode, I need my files!

I posted to the forums at Mcafee as well because originally I thought this was a virus.
Here is a copy of what I put up at Mcafee.

am not sure if this is the correct forum for this, but I couldnt find one more specific.
I will include as much info as I can.
I am not a computer whiz, but I am not toally ignorant either.

2 weeks ago my 1yr old shut off my PC via the surge protector. Then it would not turn back on. I called the Geek Squad and they said sounds like a power supply. I told a computer saavy friend what the Geeks said and he said you can do that yourself. He brought over an extra power supply he had and popped it in for me until the one I ordered from Tiger Direct came. Everything worked fine. Then I took his out and replaced it with the new one and the pc would not boot passed the windows log on screen. It would start up as normal and then get to the log on screen and completely shut down and cannot be restarted without resetting the power supply.

It will however, fully boot in Safe Mode.

I thought maybe a heat issue?? So I pulled the fan and put on the heat gel stuff and still will not boot past Windows log on screen and then completely shuts down.

I figure, I must have a virus. I had Norton on the PC. I figured it must suck so i went out and bought McAfee Total Protection. I installed Mcafee in safe Mode and it ran a virus check and found nothing. I am unable to access the Mcaffee product via the icon or programs list. It just does nothing when I click on it. I cannot update because i cannot connect to the inet.
I contacted Mcaffee live chat and the rep gave me instructions for a DOS update. Great! So I downloaded the SDAT to a flash drive and put it into the broken PC and ran the scan. 2 hours later and zero infected files are found.????
I downloaded the Microsoft Malicous code finder thing that I found on this forum and ran it too. Nothing found!!
I have been without my main PC, which has all of my business stuff on it for 2 weeks. I am lost and dumbfounded!
Can anyone offer me some advice on what going on with this PC?
Here are the specs:
WindowsXP Media Center edition P4 80GB Hard Drive
Dont know what other specs to give.

If no one can solve this, can someone atleast tell me how to get certain folders to emerge in safe mode. I dont mind to Fdisk this PC but I have to get my Business files and my pictures off of it first!!

Please, I am in full panic mode....PLEASE HELP if you can!

Thanks,
Chelle
Ok. I have spent the day reading everything I can about this problem and here is what i have done so far.
I gave up on the virus thing, obviously not the case.
So I loaded the Applications recovery CD that came with my PC and re-instakked the "start up" files...........
IT WORKED!
I restarted and everything loaded and I had my desktop and all my files back and I grabbed for a blank DVD to back it up and then the monitor went dead.
I quickly snatched another monitor and hooked it up, dead also.
BUT THE CPU WAS STILL RUNNING????
So, i figure must be the video card??
I boot from the same CD again and re-install all the drivers.
After reboot it goes to a Windows XP logo screen with a scrolling blue bar at the bottom.
I let it sit there for about 15 min, got impatient, and restarted.
SAME THING AGAIN.
So my pc right now has the Windows Logo screen on it and has been that way for about 40 minutes.
What next??

BTW. Called the recommended PC shop and they cant get to it until Monday 1 week from New Year and need it for a week. I have a small business. All of my payroll and tax files are on that computer. I know it shuold have been backed up, but it wasnt and scolding me now wont change that.

If I buy an external hard drive can I transfer files off the broken PC to the external hard drive without being able to actually see the files or access them?
Is there a DOS command to "copy all" from C: to external drive?

I cannot stress the urgency of this situation!
Any help is appreciated, but the repair shop cant do it until Jan 7 so i need to try everything I can between now and then!

Thanks again,
Chelle

My apologies for any typos. I am using a Winnie the Pooh keyboard on my 1 yr olds PC.
----------------------
So here is where I am now.
My husband went over to Walmart. Convenient and open, to get an external harddrive to copy our files too.
No luck finding anytihng there. But we have a Best Buy and I can go there, however I do not know how to get the files off the broken PC to the hard drive.
After installing the boot files and the drivers, I no longer have access to safe mode.
The PC when started normally just hangs on the Windows logo screen. When started in safe mode it goes to a blue error screen that says Fatal Error.

I have the Win XP install disk in right now and I want to re-install Windows but I am nervous it will erase my files.
How do I get Windows to re-install over itself?

In summary, I have to have my files. I know they should have been backed up.
I need 2 folders imparticular.
They are absolutely vital.
Can anyone tell me how to get them.
I am willing to go buy a new PC or external hard drive or 1000 floppys or whatever I need.
I just dont have the knowledge to do this and everything I try seems to make it worse.
Thanks for reading.........
Any help is soooo apreciated!

Preferred Solution: OMG! I need major help! Win XP stuck, NO safe mode, I need my files!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

this is a many faceted and increasing in facets issue (ill try to make it as short as possible);

backstory:
the male side of my video cable connection (the part on the motherboard) had bent pins; the pins were unbent and the cable was able to fit back in, BUT

problems:
the picture was garbled--wrong colors, moving lines, etc. the people at a tech store told me the video cable was pinched and knowing that it had been jammed in the hinge for a while, i believed it extremely feasible. I finally ordered a new video cable but replaced it, and to no avail. the picture may have been slightly better--but not significantly if so; additionally (and im not sure if it was this way the first time as well) the computer was displaying at the size of the external.

i restarted, and reazlied that the laptop screen displayed nothing at startup, until logged in--exactly like the external. i figured that at least a portion of what was going on was the computer was sending the external screen signal to the laptop.

things i've tried:

-reseating both ends of the new video cable MANY times
-turning the computer off, taking out battery, holding start button, putitng battery back in, restarting
-every variation of screen resolution/external monitor setting
-pluggin in the external, putting laptop to sleep, unpluggnig external
-reinstalling video/image drivers
function key combinations

when i tried to put in safe mode via F8, the screen went blue or light gray and stayed that w... Read more

Answer:stuck booting safe mode, which doesnt work; stuck in external monitor mode?

i managed to change the safe mode option, unfortunately the laptop screen still isnt working correctly (the external is)

Hi guys,

I'm having an issue with my system that I hope someone will be able to help me with.

Basically I am stuck on a 'Startup Repair' loop. I am running Windows 7 64bit and did not have any startup / booting issues up until a few days ago.

When I was last using my system it was working perfectly. I left it for an hour or so and when I returned I was bemused to be greeted with a message from Startup Repair saying that it could not fix problems with my computer. Obviously it had crashed in my absence and upon automatically restarting began the startup repair process.

So I restarted it myself, and before having the option to hit F8 and open Advanced Startup Options (such as safe mode, I usually suspect dodgy drivers in such circumstances) I was instead greeted by "Windows is Loading Files ... " followed by Windows immediately attempting a startup repair that it fails. It said it was 'Attempting Repairs' but ultimately was unsuccessful in the end.

So I read up on the following threads here ...

Windows stuck at loading files, can`t run repair
Windows 7 crashes on startup. Can't restore, repair or repair install

... along with some other similar ones and tried the solutions.

I tried using my Windows 7 installation disc to use CMD to run bootrec /FixMBR /FixBoot /FixBCD. When I used /ScanOS it said "0 Windows installation found". After trying this a few times I was eventually presented with the "The Windows Boot Configuration Data file is miss... Read more

Answer:Stuck on Startup Repair Loop (Windows is Loading Files ; no safe mode)

The more I think about it, the more I suspect this could be related to a dodgy Windows update having installed itself on my system.

A - when I left the system the system prior to the first crash it was scheduled to install a group of updates, which I suspect it did followed by an automatic restart which led to the Startup Repair loop that I arrived back to.

B - when I shut down the system last night it was installing the latest updates again (after installing a few hundred during the day) to bring it back up to date - and when I restarted the system this morning I was greeted by the Startup Repair loop. I have a feeling that a Windows update released in the last week or so is causing the issue.

Does anyone know how I can go about finding a list of Windows updates and uninstall them via command prompt?

(EDIT: In the meantime I have run sfc /ScanNow twice via command prompt. Both times it reports that it found and fixed issues, but the Startup Repair loop continues upon restart.)

im willing to start over but i dont know how to do that from here

I have a yoga tablet 2 pro. I powered down the tablet one night. In the morning, I normally held down the power button for no more than 2 or 3 seconds to power it up agian until I saw the lenovo logo. Everything was going well, but then it went to an android reboot screen. I never took any action to reboot my tablet, but the screen popped up anyways. I didn't want to reboot my tablet, so I selected the "power off" selection on the reboot screen. It powered off, and then took me back to the reboot screen. I selected the same option once more, but I got the same results. I decided to end the nonsense and just reboot. It wasn't going to hurt anything. When I did, it took me to my home screen where all my apps were gone. I noticed my tablet was then on safe mode. I researched what it was. I'm not sure why safe mode even exists or why it is on my tablet, but I can't get to any of my apps. So I decided to restart my tablet, but after it restarted, I was still on safe mode. I looked up how to take your tablet off safe mode, and all the info I got was to either power off your tablet or restart it and your tablet would be off safe mode. So I restarted it again...still didn't work. I then powered it off again and it took me back to the reboot screen. I have done this multiple times selecting every option on the reboot screen and nothing has seemed to work. I also powered it off and left it over night but that didn't work either. I even tried to power it off, then turn it back on while ... Read more

After a power outage 3 weeks ago I was having issues with the system going down at around 5 minutes and then less and less time after that. I was told it was a display issue and to uninstall and reinstall my display drivers. I uninstalled my drivers and it was still the same. I felt like it was temperature related. I found my graphics card (Radeon 5700) was dirty. I cleaned it and thought I was back in business. Everything was back to normal, all I needed to do was update my graphics drivers. Once that was done, my computer would no longer load past the Windows splash screen.

I used Puppy Linux on a flash drive and I have access to everything. I can use the internet and access all my files. This to me says that it is not a hardware issue.

The fact that when I try to go into safe mode it gets stuck for more than a day on classpnp.sys (when I finally give up). I understand that classpnp.sys has loaded but, there is something after that that the computer can't load. I have seen some people have atipcie.sys load after classpnp.sys and it makes sense to me that it would be a graphics driver that is causing the issue.

I need my Windows 7 up and running for school and work projects. Any ideas, thoughts, or help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi ,
Follow this tutorial to run SFC /Scannow at boot.
SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot
If you want to run the command from a USB drive follow this tutorial.

And apply it to the first link instead of the ERD (Emergency Repair CD).

Generally a good tutorial to read.

I tried using the driver CD to see if it will help with anything rebooting and I did some Express Test. It gave me this code:

Error Code:    650F:136C
Msg:    IDE device failed. Blank media or no media is present in optical drive. Test requires media with data (Resource CD, Installation CD).

Have no clue what it is. Ive done some reading on Mup.sys. It requires me to remove some 'USB card'. I dont really see any . Any advice would be appreciated or if you have anymore further queries let me know.

Answer:Stuck on Mup.sys (during safe mode) and stuck on Windows XP loading screen.

HI Jon,
Thats not  a error to worry about.
That error comes up when u run express test on the computer and the cd drive is empty.
Are we working on a notebook or a desktop.
And mup.sys is a system file .You can repiar mup.sys by following these steps.
1>Start the computer from the Windows Xp CD.2>At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to repair. 3>At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: ren c:windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys mup.old4>At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:expand <cd-romdrive>:\i386\mup.sy_ c:\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys5>After the file is successfully expanded, type exit, and then press ENTER to exit Recovery Console. 6>Restart the computer.
Best of Luck.

Hi, today I decided to restart my PC but it got stuck at the "logging off" screen, so I just held down power button to turn it off.
When I tried turning it back on, it got stuck at the windows logo. Safe-mode won't work, nor will system recovery.Note: I had not made any hardware changes in the past 3 years. I also don't think I have made any big software changes in the past couple of weeks.

What I was doing before I decided to reboot:
I was reinstalling different versions of firefox because I was having flash issues (FF and Flash arent very compatible on some of the newer FF versions)

So I installed 30.0 and it asked me reboot to finish the installation and here I am. I don't think it's related, might be just a coincidence.

Full details of what is happening:
Normal boot-up freezes at the windows7 logo. The animation freezes too. PC does not auto re-boot.
Safe-mode gets stuck while loading components. Notably at storport.sys (not sure if I spelt that right) PC does not auto re-boot.
System recovery freezes after a while during the © Mircosoft Corporation screen with green loading bar. PC does not auto re-boot.
The little light that flickers when the PC is doing something is not lighting up during the loading screens. It flickers for the first couple of seconds and then just stops (or very faintly flicks every 3-4 secs) The loading screen animation then freezes after ~10-15 seconds.

ok I will start from the beginning..hopefully someone can help me.I recently had a new motherboard installed by professinals at ztronics (website) . You mail in your alienware and they fix the problem because they specialize in them... I have the alienware area51 7700 with the common motherboard failure and mine recently had burnt out.I got installed a version 5.3 from the company and am under the impression its refurbished or rebulity or in working order (that is policy on there site..etc) which is fine. They mail the laptop back to u and all the service they perform on it cost 98$ with shipping included so overall not bad idea.Ok here is the issue. -I went to boot up comp....it seemed very slow ..jus figured maybe when a new mobi is in then the first boot its slower and left comp alone for a few days. Went to use it last nite and started getting major popups..flashes..etc showing me 100s of spyware/malware/trojans..virus..THE WORKS...and i have always kept a clean computer with actively using system restore and always having very solid virus protection and removing all spyware two-three times a week so I knew this had something to do with something very recent...My guess was the new mobi..or a website i had visited (however i had'nt gone to any site i hadnt been to a million times before and I have a LOT of viruses/trojans/malware right now..like a TON.anyway so i tried to run spybot and adaware to delete some of these..then i was gonna follow it up with my virus ... Answer:Major problem getting OUT of safe mode.

Hi, it seems that since you cannot boot into safe mode to undo the msconfig setting that what is described in the section of a Bleeping Computer tutorial that I have pasted below is what happened to you. I do not how to get you around that blue screen that is coming up when you insert the Windows disk but in case you can ever past that, the bolded section of the below text is what you need to do. I cannot tell for sure from your post how the box in msconfig got checked to boot into safe mode, did you check it?Problems that can occur by forcing Safe Mode using the System Configuration UtilityIt is possible to make your computer continuously boot up into safe mode using the System Configuration utility as described above. The program does this by changing your boot.ini file, the settings file that configures your computer's boot sequence, and adding the /safeboot argument to your operating systems startup line. An example of this can be seen below.Original [operating systems]multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /FASTDETECT /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN After using MsConfig.exe [operating systems]multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /FASTDETECT /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN /safeboot:minimal When you are done using safe mode, you would then run the System Configuration utility again and uncheck the /Safeboot option, thus removing the /safeboot argument from the boot.ini file, and allowi... At one of the forums it was posted that Safe Mode could also be accessed by "run<msconfig<BOOTINI". After checking on /SAFEBOOT, my system restarted and now i couldn't even access to the Normal Mode. I Have tried all the options but am stuck on a Black and White Sceen with the options of SafeMode/SafeMode with Networking/Normal Mode and Last Known Configuration....

Something hit computer on 31 March that hijacks browser and sends everything to a windowsclick.com website. This happens even in SAFE mode. After launching in SAFE, system still won't load Ewido, Panda, SpyBot, HijackThis! or anything else for diagnostics or fixing. Cannot locate or uninstall anything recognizeable as windowsclick even in SAFE mode.

System is a laptop running XP with all service packs.

Any suggestions?

Hi

About to give up and buy new PC but have too many kid pics on current PC. Have HP Pavilion with windows 7. Issue appeared to begin with explorer vs Chrome issue. Added Chrome and had issues opening files or downloading anything. Had to delete one and add it back. Progressed to losing functionality of most games and applications but could navigate to pics and the basics. Firewall can not be turned on and not getting windows updates. Lost admin functionality and now can only be on PC as guest. Never set up admin password. PC won't let me boot up in safe mode either. Restart hit F8 and won't turn on. If I dont hit F8 it will turn on. Can get to internet now but everything else in guest mode so no pics. Can't troubleshoot much at all with no admin rights. PC didn't come with CDs and all preloaded. Did get a new monitor around when issues came about and switched internet provider.. Help!

Hi, I've been having major virus issues today. I was getting Generic System Process errors earlier today, and from there it has escalated to annoying popups and phony antivirus programs. I was going to take a HijackThis log and post it, but it was killed halfway through the scan, and I can no longer boot into safe mode to run it.

Currently, the computer is in a usable condition except for safe mode, but I need help soon to get this sorted out without having to format the computer. Thanks for any advice you can give.

EDIT: I've given in and decided to just format the computer. Mark this as resolved, I guess.

DOUBLEEDIT: Decided to give it another go instead of formatting, would still welcome any advice you could give.

Well basically i just called the geek squad at best buy and they said their virus removal is $200.... i can not afford that. I'd rather just buy a new pc if it came to that. So heres my problem
When my computer starts up i message in yellow with a blue background pops up and says.... Warning! your computer is infected with spyware! please d/l a virus protection program or w/e... etc etc.

Just before this i had a problem with a Red X claiming it was windows xp virus update...coming up at the bottom of my screen.. and telling me to downloads things.
I cant really run my pc outside of safe mode anymore, because so much junk pops up, and it eventually kicks me out to this blue screen with a bunch of text, with a different title everytime for my problem... "poole head bad" or something like that.

and that screen tells me to resart. Ive ran AVG like 5 times, and everytime i come up with the same 3 trojans too.

So thats it in basic form... If someone can help me seriously fix this problem and keep it fixed. I'd send you a check for $20 or so just for your time and effort! no kidding... id appreciate a helpful person over a geek squad $200 ripping off.

I am running Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron laptop.

I had a virus attack a couple of days ago and I thought I removed it with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. However, now my computer is completely inoperable. Whenever I restart, my desktop is frozen. The mouse is forever stuck in the hourglass, and the computer will not respond to any keyboard commands.

When I try to restart in Safe Mode, I immediately get the blue screen of death with an error that reads something like IRQL_LESS_THAN

I have no idea what to do. I no longer have my original Windows XP CD.

Answer:Major problem: Desktop frozen, cannot restart in safe mode after virus

Try the following ...Start tapping the F8 key after you press the ON button, and continue tapping until you are presented with the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" screen.Use the UP/DOWN arrow keys to select "Last known good configuration", and press the <ENTER> key.The computer will attempt to load Windows. If Windows does not start, try the same thing again .... and continue trying for at least 10 times, before you rule that option out as a means of getting your OS up and running again, normally. Why 10 times? Based on past experience, a successful result is sometimes achieved after several consecutive failed attempts. To get a look at the error message presented by the BSOD (blue screen of death) ....Start tapping the F8 key after you press the ON button, and continue tapping until you are presented with the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" screen.Use the UP/DOWN arrow keys to select "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and press the <ENTER> key.Your system will attempt to restart normally, but when it crashes, it will not re-start: Instead, you will see a BSOD with error message.Record the error message in full detail, and post in this thread.

Hello,

Today I found that I have a terrible-virus-infestation-on-my-computer. The-first-signs-of-trouble-was-when-links-kept-redirecting-to-spam-ad-sites.

The-first-thing-I-tried-to-do-was-a-System-Restore.-That-is-what-I-usually-attempt-in-cases-such-as-this, and-it-generally-works. In-System-Restore-on-the-screen-where-it-prompts-you-to-save-changes-and click next, the-next button does not-work. This-is-the-first-time-I've-had-problems-with-system-restore.-I-have-tried-getting-system-restore-to-work-by-turning-off-all-antivirus-related-software-and-then-trying-it-but-it-still-does-not-work. I-suspect-that-the-virus-is-causing-system-restore-to-not-work.

I-have-Avira-Antivirus-and-that-simply-won't-turn-on-probably-due-to-the-virus. I-also-have-an-unupdated-version-of-Spyware-Doctor-but-the-Intelliguard-is-not-working-also-probably-due-to-the-virus.

Every-time-I-open-my-browser, the-Spyware-doctor-scan-finds-a-bunch-of-new-low-threat-spyware/malware.

When-I-try-to-install-some-software-such-as-windows-defender-and-avg-antivirus-I-get-the-message:"The-system-administrator-has-set-policies-to-prevent-this-installation."

Answer:[SOLVED] major problem, only work in safe mode. Black screen

Hi,

You could try one of the following, or both;

Disable startup processes
Go to Start > Search.
Type "msconfig" > hit ENTER.
Go to Startup-tab > Disable all items in this list.
Apply > OK.
Reboot > Try normal bootup.

Create a new user account
Logon to Safemode (Hit F8 during startup).
Create a new user account.
Boot up machine as normal > Try to logon to that user account.

If you've done before, you can have a look through the Eventlog on the machine while in Safemode, and see if you can find any faults around the time that you tried to boot Normally, and see if any faults are reoccuring. Feel free to export the eventlog and attach as a .txt here for us to view aswell.

To open the eventlog;
Go to Start > Search.
Type "eventwvr.msc" > Hit ENTER.
Actions > Save log to/export log to.

Question: Stuck in Safe Mode

After a recent clean-up of my programs I have found myself to be in sort of a bind. I restarted my computer but my toolbar wouldn't show up. I know what you're thinking, explorer.exe in task manager; didn't work. So I figured I would restore my computer in safe mode. But, when I start in safe mode it said it could not execute the restore, so I tried numerous times with no luck. I decided to reinstall Windows XP; a very bad choice. It started out fine, but it had to restart to start the real installation. When it rebooted again it said that it could not install XP while in safe mode. Simple enough, I would just have to change my msconfig settings to normal boot instead of /safeboot. When I removed the disc and started the computer again, it was still in installation mode and stuck in safe. So in conclusion, every time I start my computer it says it cannot install windows in safemode and restarts, and then repeats itself.

HELP!!!! what do I do??

Answer:Stuck in Safe Mode

Hi dburk, welcome to TSF..

when you restart the computer with the XP installation disc in the cd drive, does it initiate the installation process again? If yes, check out the following link for a repair installation walkthrough:

I am stuck in safe mode and have tried everything that the WIndows Vista Help and Support section recommends: F8 (normal mode, safe mode with netwroking etc), I have scanned and checked for virus, everything! Very frustrated, my husband thinks it could have happened after her tried to install something but he is not sure, I am pretty sure that whatever it was he tried to install was what did it as my son and I had not used the computer the day it got stuck in safe mode. He is not sure the name of what it was either.
What else can I try?

Answer:Stuck in Safe Mode and I have tried everything!

I'm not 100% sure on this 1 but a little research found me this

while you're booted in safe mode, bring up the task manager (ctrl+alt+del)
select file->new task (run) and type in
msconfig
check normal mode and OK. restart the PC

I have attached the config screen from my system for you to see(i did not do this in safe mode)

Question: stuck in Safe Mode

About a week ago no matter what site I tried to go to I got a message telling me that there was suspicious activity on my browser and to call this 800 number. When I did they said they were microsoft and told me my system had been compromised and tried to sell me protection. I declined. My system has been stuck in safe mode ever since. Whenever it restarts it's in safe mode. I get a window that asks me if I want to start in safe mode or do a system restore. The system restore has failed everytime.( 3 or 4 times). I guess I'm not suppose to ask you guys for help with xp anymore but I can't afford to upgrade right now.Can you help me get out of safe mode?

Thank you.

Answer:stuck in Safe Mode

You can ask to help with XP forever. We do not have a time limit on retired Microsoft OS's.
You are infected with a Virus. Microsoft does not offer an 800 # nor do they sell Protection.
Please click on the link in my signature for Virus/Malware Help and do those things in Safe Mode with Networking and then post the results to that section of the Forum. While waiting for the Security forum to respond, please download ADWCleaner and run that. It will remove all unwanted toolbars and redirects. Then follow up with the security forum.

My sons PC with ME operating system won't boot up properly. When starting in safe mode it freezes and under the task manager nothing is running. Is this caused by a virus or a hardware problem.?I can reload ME but he will lose all his data - he has a lot of music stored. Is there any way to get at the data before reloading? or should we cut our losses and try to resore.?

Answer:ME stuck in safe mode

If it were me and the music collection meant an awful lot, I would hop down to PC world and buy the cheapest new hard drive I could find. Install it as master, install Win ME on the new drive, load up the free version of AVG, install the old drive as slave and transfer over the required files. Sledgehammer to crack a nut? maybe, but it will work.

Question: Stuck in Safe Mode

A couple of days ago I re-started by PC and got this Blue Screen of Death;

base at B02413000, date stamp 45a4e3d8

This happen a couple of times, and each time the pc went into Windows normally, it lasted five minutes and then went into the above again.

Since then, I've only been able to work in Safe Mode with networking.

I've run all the tests for viruses, worms etc listed in some of the threads on this site, and everything is coming up clean.

I'm on Windows XP Media with SP2

Any help would be appreciated. Of course, if there's anymore information you require, please let me know, but be aware, I really do have limited knowledge on pretty much anything to do with pc's (I acknowledge there is a thing called 'the registry', but don't what it does or where it is.....thats how basic I am).

Question: Stuck in Safe Mode

Hi,
Windows 10 14393.953 Pro
Stuck in Safe Mode.
My computer suddenly restarted, and when I got o MSCONFIG and change from Selective startup to Normal, and press Apply, it goes back to Selective Startup.
In Boot tab, it's for some reason set to Safe Mode with Networking, when I uncheck that and press apple, it rechecks itself. And stays in Safe mode.
Any ideas?

Answer:Stuck in Safe Mode

Hi, given that it suddenly restarted and won't boot normally, let's first check your disk.

If you can, download Crystal Diskinfo on another PC (free, incl. portable) to check SMART params. Easy to find. Put it on a flash drive or CD etc, and plug it in/insert it, and run it.

You will get a quick Good/caution/bad display.

If that's ok, you could try using a restore point. Shift left click restart, and navigate through Troubleshooting to System Restore.

(Only valid if you turned System restore on at some point and have a usable restore point).

Otherwise, you will need to boot from a suitable boot disk (e.g. Kyhi's at the top of the Software and Apps section) for a familiar Win 10 environment, or a Win 10 bootable medium to a command prompt and restore the backup copy of the registry.

Do you have any form of recovery disk or disk image that you have previously created?

Question: Stuck in Safe Mode

My computer got the "System Tool" Virus. I did some research on how to fix it and everything I read said I had to enter safe mode using F8 during start up. This wouldn't work so I found several things that told me to go to start>run and then type msconfig and go to safeboot. I did this. When I rebooted it brought me to the logon screen in safe mode where it would not accept my username or password. How do I get back to normal mode from here so I can type my password info in? F8 during startup works but it only allows me to choose XP and brings me back to the safe mode startup.

Thank you

Answer:Stuck in Safe Mode

Safeboot and Safe Mode are not the same thing. So F8 will have no effect on Safeboot.

There is no reason why your password would be accepted in normal mode, anyway, if it is not accepted in Safeboot mode. They both use the same source for checking it. Make sure that you don't have the caps-lock turned on in your reduced mode somehow.

You need to edit the boot.ini file. Do you have any bootable CD's that you could use to access files on your machine? Do you have a floppy drive?"

Do your know your administrative password and can you log in as Administrator?

i am running windows xp pro. it seems that it is stuck in diagnostic mode or safe mode... cant do a restore, it wont roll back. it wont connect to the internet, nor will it run any apps... ant help would be apprieciate.

Answer:stuck in safe mode

How long has this been happening? What is different from how it would normally startup after a cold reboot (power off, power on), any prompts or anything?

If you are in Safe Mode (w/o networking) you probably won't be able to connect to the internet/network. It's really just a mode with known safe drivers and processes to let you troubleshoot problems that may be affecting your computer.

When your computer starts up, press F8 and try restoring to last known good configuration (or choose the normal XP Startup option you want to try).

Tell us how it goes.

Question: stuck in safe mode

Hi,

I have a 6 month old computer that has had nothing but problems for most of its life. Dell Inspirion 15 i5. Windows 7 Home Premium.

I'm going to list problems. I have NO idea what's related to what.

It all began when I got some sort of nasty virus that looked like it deleted all my files, but it actually just hid them all.

Then I thought I had that mostly fixed, but I would sign in to the internet and it would redirect my home page to some medical store in Canada. It still does that, but I managed to block the website, and now it only tries to do that it firefox, not chrome or explorer.

Then one morning (2 weeks ago) I booted the computer, and it let me login to windows - I saw the "welcome" screen, and it went black with a white arrow and stayed there. And that's what I get now.

Originally, I went into safe mode, ran avast, advanced system care, and malware bytes, and rebooted, and on the first reboot it would have the same problem, but if I rebooted again, it worked. If I shut the system down, though, I had to do the whole procedure again. Now it won't even do that.

When I managed to boot the system last - sometime yesterday - I could not run windows update, and it said it had an "important" update, and it looked like it downloaded it, but it wouldn't run. It also looks like a bunch of services are stopped, but I can't find a way to enable or run them.

I do not have Windows installation di... Read more

Answer:stuck in safe mode

I would do a factory reset after backing up all of your important files to an external drive or USB flash drive in safe mode. Make sure you get everything in the "Users" directories.

Hi.
Well earlier I was looking on this site to fix my dvd/cd-rom drive problem and seen a result that sounded easy for a person who knows little about computers. where you use the notepad and make it fixcd.reg but i did it. then i restarted my computer and now i'm stuck in safe mode. I can't get out. I restored my computer from a time before i used the technique fixcd.reg. i just want out of safe mode. im trying to set my printer up for college which starts next monday and if anybody can help me before i have to go spend money to get it fixed would be soooo helpful and maybe solve my cd/dvd rom drive problem too. well lets just fix safe mode first. thanks in advance.

Answer:HELP?!?! I'm stuck in Safe Mode

Have you tried this? Last known configuration.
1. Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer.

Click the Start button , click the arrow next to the Lock button , and then click Restart.

2. Do one of the following:

• If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you will need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.

• If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to start, and then press F8.
3. On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.

4. If your computer has more than one operating system installed, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system that you want to start by using Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER. Windows will then resume starting normally.

Question: Stuck in safe mode

I am having trouble with a friends pc, it will only start in safe mode, but without any icons or start button, task bar, etc, just a grey background.
When I restart, it goes to an options list, 1 Normal 2 Bootlog 3 Safe Mode 4 Step by step, selecting any of the options just brings the same result mentioned above.
I need to try and recover out of this and save important data before I reload windows, (Me)

Ok my computer has been messed up since this morning from something that is not running on my computer right.. When I start my computer I run it normally and it ends up on start mode

We did a system restore and it went back to December 2007 and lost alot of our stuff like the qwest, windows one care, like everything..

Anyway to fix this?

We went through the F8 thing and couldnt do it because it was in safe mode..

The problem is still the same as before we restored it.. You know how vista is supposed to look on the bottom for start, its supposed to be all colorful and stuff like that. Well looking at the picture its just plain white.. Every screen I open its pitch white and you can only see black and white and the 8 main colors of the rainbow.. My desktop and the whole computer starts up in safe mode even when we try to start it normally.. that is not a good sign

We use Emachines computer which is not a very well known computer....

Question: stuck in safe mode

I am stuck in safe mode, when I reboot, it goes back into safe mode. I am running Windows XP, and this computer is about 7 years old. No virus's that I know of I ran a scan the other day, everything is clear. I just do not understand why I can't get out of safe mode. Thanks in advance for your help!My answer is probably somewhere in the help forum, but i looked in the basic troubleshooting, I came across how to get out of safe mode, it told me to go to this other area to look, when I got there I didn't understand what to look at, I looked at Windows XP troubleshooting, tried some other links there as well, I can't find it, because I didn't see any key words about being stuck in safe mode or how to get out after that.  Thanks again, I hate to make you repeat something that has to be there, it seems like a common problem that could happen. I am just stuck in safe mode. ahhhh....lolTrisse

I hope someone can help me with this. My son's laptop was infected with trojan.vundo.b and tried everything to get rid of it. I think it is now gone, but when I rebooted, I noticed there was no sound or internet. So after trying to start some of the services, I realized that Vista thinks it is in Safe mode (but it booted with the normal screen). I can boot into safe mode with networking and the internet works fine, but as far as everything else, no dice. So still no sound and if you try to fix it you get the error that you can't start the service in Safe mode. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Question: Stuck in Safe Mode

Hello. I was infected with the Anti-Virus 2011 virus and, following instructions on this forum and using Malwarebytes, I was able to get use my computer again. But since that virus, I have been continually stuck in safe mode, all of my services have stopped and my automatic updates (which says it's been turned on) is not running. Here's the thing: When I try to select "normal startup" in the system utility, "safeboot" then gets automatically, too. If I unselect "safeboot", then "selective startup" is automatically selected. The only way I can use my computer (XP) is by "selective startup" and none of the services start. If anyone can assist, I would be grateful. Thanks.

Question: Stuck in Safe Mode

I have a Gateway computer with Widows XP. My husband was trying to install Sims2 and the disk would not run so he disabled Nortons and put the computer in safe mode and now it is stuck there, he tried to reset it to normal and it will no go back, it stays in safe mode...HELP

Answer:Stuck in Safe Mode

Being "stuck" in safe mode could indicate that one of the main system DLL files is damaged or missing. Or it could mean that a piece of the computer's hardware is not operating properly. This latter condition could be caused by either a failure in a device; or a device driver could be missing or a the wrong version.

Boot your computer and pay close attention to determine why it is booting up that way. There might be some sort of an error message telling you what is wrong and why safe mode is being chosen.

Write down any message and let us know what you find out.

Here is another option that might resolve the problem.

Yesterday I discovered my computer had some nasty little malware/virus on it that would boot on startup and demand that I install it's idea of virus protection. While I was able to figure out quickly and able to stop the program from running, it would continually reboot itself as I hastened to run any and all programs that would get rid of it.

I got sick of this, and opted to start up in safe mode minus internet/networking to run these tools. So, while now I'm reasonably certain that whatever bug my computer had is gone, it REFUSES to come out of safe mode. My dad is really skilled with computers, so I called him up and told him what I had done and tried...as a last resort he said the best thing I could do was re-install windows (which is what I was afraid of).

I booted from the XP CD, made it through reasonably enough and now (ugh!) when it gets to the second part of re-installation it tells me that Setup cannot continue in safe mode and is going to restart. It's a nasty, bitter cycle that does not end.

Now, I've been on these forums already looking for an answer and tried some of them...this is what I've done:

1) Pressed f8 and tried to boot into ANY mode beyond safe mode
2) gone into bootcfg from the recovery console and tried to edit it out of safe mode
3) hit the ctrl key a lot...i see now that only works with Win 98
4) reinstalled windows again
5) cried

Anyway, nothing works. Now I can't even get into the recovery console because it says my password... Read more

Question: Stuck in Safe Mode

I have an HP computer with windows 98, but I don't really know all the specs, except I have 37.2 GB hard drive, 256 MB RAM and it's a PIII. The problem is that I recently cleared the whole hard drive cause os some kind of virus that slowed down the performance. Now that I have cleared the hard drive, how do I get out of safe mode. I also need to know how to change the color setting from the 12 bits and for some reason, it doesn't list the modem to connect to the internet, so how do I find the name of the modem for my system. I don't know all the specs, because I didn't buy it brand new and non of the installed software came with it.

Answer:Stuck in Safe Mode

case off time make sure you have turned of pc first
it sounds as if your grahics has defaulted to vga mode as it doesnt recognise your graphics card. right click on desktop go to properties then click on settings that will tell you if it recognises your monitor and graphics card or not
have you got the drivers for all your pci cards if not open up your machine jot down model numbers of modem/sound/video /chipset/another.or search your windows cd/or you can use windows update for the drivers.its agood idea tio keep them in case of probs in future
in the case of your modem
go to control panel modem and phone options then go to modems then add it should find your modem if you have one fitted and if it doesnt recognise it (doesnt have the drivers ) it will use a default setting for you to go on to the internet
out of safe mode
when the machine prompts you at safe mode scroll down to load windows normaly

Hi, I was hoping one of the experts here could help me out. My work computer running windows XP was infected with smitfraud and I followed one of the tutorials on the Symantek site to try to remove it. I attempted to start the computer in safe mode by going to ‘start’ > ‘run’ > ‘msconfig’ and then selecting /SAFEBOOT under the BOOT.INI tab. While attempting to start in safe mode, I get the following error: “The system could not log you on. Make sure your username and domain are correct, then type your password again.”

Well, the username and password are correct, but there is no where to select/change the domain, so I can’t start in safe mode. However, since I checked /SAFEBOOT in msconfig, it is continually trying to boot in safe mode, which continually throws the above error. I tried tapping F8 on startup and selected ‘start in normal mode’, but it still tries to start in safe mode to no avail.

Following another instruction found on this forum, I attempted to use an XP installation CD and run the Recovery Console and I get the followin message: "Setup did not find any hard disk drives on your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer and that any disk related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue."

Unfortunately, I can'f fine any instruction beyond this point.

Question: Stuck in Safe Mode

Whenever I restart my computer, it boots up in "safe mode" and I cant get out of it. It was working fine earlier, then I restarted it and it came up in safe mode. Does anyone know how I can get out and reboot normally? Windows 2000

Thanks.

Answer:Stuck in Safe Mode

Does it tell you it is in "Safe Mode" or does it just "look" like it? If the latter, you are probably not in Safe Mode at all, but have lost your Display adapter configuration and are looking at a Safe Mode like VGA screen.

It's tough to troubleshoot problems like that in Win2k because it has no native startup manager. However XPs "msconfig" will work in 2k and you can get the files for it here:

http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Msconfig.htm

This is what "clean boot" troubleshooting is WITHOUT msconfig:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;281770

With (XP):

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;310353

As far as I know the functionality will be identical if you install msconfig to 2k.

Try disabling the "startup group" first and see if that allows you to boot normal.

You can also hide microsoft services and disable non microsoft ones.

If no luck you have to go to the device manager and disable things like sound and network cards.

Go to start, run and type msconfig. Hit ok.

Question: Stuck In Safe Mode

Help. I'm stuck in safe mode from hell. I was able to do as Gateway said, I typed in msconfig, startup tab, unchecked boxes, restarted, then no more safe mode, but not able to do anything. Popup error stated windows errror would make file then to restart. So I rechecked boxes that stated windows, left program files unchecked, same problem. The only way I can get online is safe mode w/network under Administrator, then task mgr. I have Windows XP Home Edition. This all started after downloading service pack 2, which I've sinced uninstalled. On the safe mode screen, at the top it says Microsoft (R) (Build 2600.xpsp2_gdr 040517-1325 Service Pack 1. Should I do something with that? Please help. Thankyou

Answer:Stuck in Safe Mode

Does it say SAFE MODE in all four corners of the screen?

If it doesn't, you probably actually have a video driver problem.

If it does, you may need to edit MSDOS.SYS to see if you have a BOOTSAFE=1
entry which needs to be changed to
BOOTSAFE=0

Question: Stuck In Safe Mode

The first method that should be used if at all possible is below! Make sure you really try the F8 method first because it is less problematic. Using MSconfig (discussed later) can sometimes result in you getting stuck in safe mode. This may happen due to malware, or do to other problems with your OS!
Restart the computer.
When you see the black-and-white Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen, start tapping the F8 key.
When you get to the boot menu, use the arrow keys to select Safe mode or Safe Mode with Networking depending on the procedure you are following an also what your OS and PC configuration allow.
Then Press Enter.
The computer restarts in Safe mode. This can take several minutes.
If you cannot use the above Preferred Method you can use the below MSconfig method with Windows 98, Me, and XP (Windows 2000 users must use the F8 method - keep trying until you get it.

Answer:Stuck In Safe Mode

Welcome to Majrogeeks!

What Windows OS are you using and do you have a bootable CD for your OS?

Try the below in the meantime.

In Safe Mode if you hit CTRL-SHIFT-ESC, does Task Manager appear? If so, click File, New Task (Run...) and enter cmd and click OK.

Note: Use cmd for Windows 2K or XP. Use command for all other OS!

Does this open a command prompt window? If so, enter the below commands.

cd c:\
attrib -r -s -h boot.ini
edit boot.ini

If the boot.ini file appears in an editor window, locate the text saying /SAFEBOOT and delete it. Only delete that text and nothing else. Then save the file and reboot!

Any luck?

I've found a backdoor virus on my computer, I have tried to get rid of it using symantec, but it told me that it couldn't delete the files because it would cause windows to work incorrectly. I have read up on this and understand that this is part of how the virus works, so i tried running the computer in safe mode by pressing F8 during start up, i managed to get into safe mode, but i couldnt log in, i cant log in with my normal user name and password and i cant log in with just "administrator" either. So i went to the symantec website and looked at how to get on safe mode, it told me to go to run: msconfig, and check the box SAFEBOOT. I did that, and managed to get back into safe mode. Now I'm stuck, i cant get in because the password wont work, and everytime i reboot it goes to safe mode! I've tried doing f8 and starting windows normall, but no, back to safe mode, then i tried going to f8 and using the last working setting and that takes me into safe mode as well. PLEASE HELP ME! Im sooooo stuck!

Answer:Stuck on safe mode but cant log in

Are you able to boot into Safemode with the Command Line enabled?.. If so, you can try and reset your regular user account/and or the administrator account password by typing " net user [your user name here] then password here ", without the quotes and brackets. To reset the admin account you would do the same thing but with " net user administrator [new password here] ", again, without the quotes and brackets. And if that works, I would then reboot into safe mode again and and use the Norton uninstaller found here http://service1.symantec.com/suppor... , then I would download Hitman Pro 3.5. found here http://download.cnet.com/Hitman-Pro...and do a scan to see what it finds.

Question: Stuck in Safe Mode

Hi, I have a problem created by myself that made me stuck in safe mode. Long story short, i ran msconfig and set it to safe mode and it bsod loop boots while in SF. If I can just somehow reset the bootmgr or find a way to open msconfig through the recovery console, i can fix the rest. Can somebody please help me

Answer:Stuck in Safe Mode

Hi,

From the Windows 7 Recovery Console type:

bcdedit {default} /deletevalue safeboot
The command result must be "The operation completed successfully". Exist the Recovery Console to restart the computer, it should start in normal mode now.

Question: Stuck in Safe Mode

I have a Dell Dimension 8100 with Windows Me pre-installed. I do have the original restore disk.

I don't have system restore currently available.

Everything was fine when I turned off a few night ago, but when I booted back up, it's boots up in safe mode only. I tried hitting F8 and tried Normal, Boot Log, and step by step confirmation, but it still keeps on starting in safe mode. Also, in safe mode, my mouse will not work.

I ran check disk, with automatically fix errors, and shut down in normal mode, but it still keeps coming up in safe mode.

I have AntVir Anti VIrus, and Zone Alarm Free Firewall.

Is there a way to boot from the original disk, and repair the windows system without restoring the entire drive.

Help is needed urgently, because I have a couple websites to update.

Thanks

Hey, all. Here's the problem: My computer has been acting all sorts of weird of late. (I think it harks back to my killing a virus with malwarebytes.) Now, every time I start-up, the machine goes into safe mode. When I go into "msconfig" to attempt to correct it by selecting "normal startup" it automatically checks "safe mode" and when I unselect "safe mode", then it immediately goes into "selective startup". (None of the computer's services [ eg, printer, usb, etc...] boot up). When I log in as as the administrator, I can't access "msconfig". Instead, a screen pops up asking me to find a program to open "msconfig" in.

I've done some reading and found that I need to uncheck the "Make all boot settings permanent" tab, but there's no such option under the "timeout" button in the the boot list.

I've had it up to here and hopefully, someone can help. Thanks.

This morning I was having problems with Bit Defender & had gotten an email back from them telling me what to do after getting into safe mode. I clicked on safe mode and when it came back up it asked for my password. I put in the password that I use to get into computer and it said incorrect. I turned it off and back on several times but it keeps coming back to that screen & also no internet since it was trying to go to safe mode without. I can't do anything. Tried putting the windows 10 repair disk etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am now on my other computer, but do all my work on the one that isn't working.

Question: Stuck in safe mode

I have a malware issue on a computer. I was in the process of fixing it when I tried to restart the computer in safe mode. The typical press F8 at the beginning of bootup did not work so I went to msconfig and told it to boot in safe mode. When I restarted, it did go into safe mode like I had hoped. However, I was not thinking ahead very far. This computer is connected to a domain so the user name and password I was using was from the network active directory. When going into safemode, obviously that will not get me logged in to the computer. The problem is that I did not load the OS originally and never logged in locally so I do not know a user name or password to allow me to log in. So now I am stuck with the computer booting in safe mode and no way to change it. Do you know of any ways to get past this? Please HELP.

Answer:Stuck In Safe Mode

do you mean, every time you start your computer, it boots into safe mode?

remove the '/safeboot' flag from your boot.ini

start > run > type: MSCONFIG and click OK, click the BOOT.INI tap and clear the box that reads /SAFEBOOT
