WINDOWS EXPLORER error and computer cannot turn off without plugging the computer

Question: WINDOWS EXPLORER error and computer cannot turn off without plugging the computer

Hi, I have a problem with windows XP. Everytime I turn off my computer by clicking on "turn off computer," I receive an error message popup that states "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to be closed." After that pop-up message, the computer freezes for about a minute and goes back to its normal format (desktop) and the computer DOES NOT TURN OFF.

How do I turn off my computer without unplugging the computer? I try "ctrl+alt+del" to go to the windows task manager to "shut down" the computer but..the computer restarts again and doesnt turn off. Do I have a virus or a windows explorer problem? and how do i fix it? thank you

Preferred Solution: WINDOWS EXPLORER error and computer cannot turn off without plugging the computer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hello. several times when I am about to shut down my computer, after pressing the 'turn off computer' button, the system freezes for a moment and then i get the message: "windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" with the 'send report' and 'don't send' buttons. I click on don't send and it seems that it re-runs explorer.exe and then i have to press turn off computer again, this time with no problem.

the weird thing is that it doesn't always give me this message. for example if i just start my computer and immediately shut it down, there is no error. it's only after using it for a long time so i guess that it may have something to do with a program or something!?

anyone having the same problem or has anything to suggest? please help, it's really annoying!!

Answer:Windows Explorer error after pressing Start -> Turn Off Computer!

Well you could turn off error reporting. That would probably make it go away.

Start > control panel > system > advanced tab > error reporting button >
uncheck Enable error reporting > ok, apply and exit.

Then just to be sure that Microsoft doesn't get stubborn on you, go to Start >
in the run menu, type in services.msc > navigate to the error reporting service and double click it > in the "Startup type" window, click on the drop down arrow and select Disabled >
Apply, ok and exit.

You won't see that error again.

Thank you in advance for reading this. I have not been able to power off my computer for the past few days. When I shutdown my computer, I get a message to end program - explorer.exe, and when I choose either cancel or end now, the message disappears, and then I am left with a blank screen (with just the desktop background left). I have tried waiting (more than 15 min) to see if the computer will power off, but it doesn't, so I just manually turn off the computer by holding the power button.

I started noticing issues with my computer when mozilla firefox stopped responding (I could open the program but not type in anything), and I remember getting a trojan virus warning from avg, but I believe it was removed by avg, and it is not showing up when I run a scan now. Any help with these issues would be greatly appreciated.

Phone: Blackberry Curve 8330 with an 8 GB Sandisk micro SD card (problem started before new card was put in), plugged into computer via USB port and in mass storage mode

From what I gleaned from Google, it's an error reading the disk (perhaps trying to read it before it's fully loaded?).

Once I click Continue, I'm able to do everything I need to do (dragging and dropping files between phone and computer), so it's not a huge problem, but is rather annoying. Is there any way to get rid of it, or do I have to live with it?

Thanks either way.

So, I have a refurbished Split X2. Anyway, it was running fine.. Occasionally slow, but only during updates and such. But today I decided to back up my phone into the computer. I guess the USB port is flimsy because I keep hearing the alert for when a device is plugged in or not. Long story short, I think the file transfer was interrupted. Now my computer is running really slow. I got most of the pictures and I put it in the SD card on the tablet part. My memory and disk is always at 98% and 100% respectively. This is driving me nuts. I've only had it for less than a week and I've only used it to work on my Java homeworks and youtube videos.

How much RAM does your computer have? Do you have a lot of programs running, many tabs open in your browser, or many startup programs? All of these can fill up your RAM. Now, depending on how you have set your computer to handle the page file, it's most likely that when your RAM gets filled up (near 95%), the computer starts writing into the page file thus increasing hard disk activity. Any of the following steps has worked for me:
1. Decrease number of running programs; close two or three of those that are running;
2. Close open tabs in browser until the RAM activity decreases significantly;
3. Restart computer - NOT forced restart by pressing and holding the power button, just the normal restart procedure.

I have had a laptop for about two months now. For two months, I have been dealing with the same issue, but just haven't had 3 hours to spend on the phone with Dell. The problem is, 4 out of 10 times that I go to use Windows Explorer to view picture files (and I have A LOT, I do photography), I get this error: Windows Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close. Then it closes regardless of what I'm doing, and tries to restart. Sometimes it happens when I am trying to rename folders, and other times when I am trying to select multiple files. Does anybody know what is causing this? Is there anything I can do to fix it? I have Windows Live Onecare on my system, so I don't think it's a virus, especially since this has been happening from day one out of the box. Thanks in advance.

ok - brand new dell desktop - windows xp pro

Try to open my computer, control panel, outlook, my documents, etc - sometimes it works, but mostly i get the following error:

Error Signature

AppName: Explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVersion: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 00018fea

How do I go about fixing this? Dell says its a software issue and want me to pay for them to fix it cuz its past 30 days. HELP!!!

Answer:Windows explorer error - brand new computer

If you have a System Restore point that predates the problem, that might be the quickest fix -- otherwise I can tell you it might be very hard to sort out by trial and error troubleshooting.
Start > Run: msconfig > Launch System Restore.

Look for a date when you did not have the problem. System Restores can be undone if not helpful.

I've seen this error in the past, but it was generally limited to "right click" context menu access.

I am having trouble with a 6 month old IBM R51 laptop - when I select TURN OFF COMPUTER from within Windows and the START button - the computer sometimes hangs and will not shut down. I have to press the power button to reset. Any idea what could be causing this?

Answer:Computer Hangs When Turn Off Computer Selected In Windows

Welcome to BC! There are many possible causes, however there is one common cause. Often XP's exit sound file gets corrupt and if it does not run then XP won't shut down. I am not sure based on what you have told us so far if this is the issue or not, but let's see:Go to:Start > Control Panel > Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds tabUnder Program Events scroll down until you see Exit Windows. Highlight Exit Windows by clicking on it once. Then under Sounds choose None. Click Apply and finally OK. Reboot if possible, or shut down computer and restart manually. Once it is up and running, shut down computer by going to Start > Turn Off Computer. See if it will shut down on it's own now.If it does, the only difference will be that you will not longer hear the 2 seconds of music that XP usually plays as it shuts down.

On my Windows 7 Home Premium computer I have this problem. When I click a computer or NAS unit in the Network part in the Windows Explorer I just get an connection error dialog. If I try to connect via another machine (windows 7 Ultimate) I get a login dialog and have no problem connecting.

Both machines is on the same network using WORKGRUP. Both can connect the Internet and print to local printer.

The main problem is that I get no login dialog - just an error dialog. I can't find any way to manual edit this information.

Regards / Jimmy

Answer:Error trying to connect to computer via Network in Windows Explorer

Had this the other day with one of my Win7 boxes. You can manually enter login credentials for shares though control panel > user accounts and family safety > credential manager > Windows credentials > add a Windows credential.

Hello everyone,It seems that my XPS 9550 has a motherboard issue. I have got this laptop for several months before this problem happen. At first, the power button needs to pressed twice before the computer can turn on. Pressing it once will only cause the button to light up and fans to start spinning for only seconds. Then, after about a week, the problem got worse. I have to static discharge the BIOS and charge the computer for about 12 to 24 hours to get it working again. The light indicator did show that the CMOS battery is dead several times, and I had the CMOS battery replaced, but still no luck. I have run the diagnostics many times, but everything seems perfect. And I can get into the OS once the computer powers post points out a similar problem, but I think it has nothing to do with the battery or most of the motherboard components.Does anyone have encountered this before? Any advice will be appreciated.- Peter

After having read a few forums and help groups, I still cannot find out what exactly caused my computer to not run Explorer.exe or report it as "not found" when I tried to manual load it. Renaming the file and loading worked fine, but that doesn't get to the root of the problem.Does anyone know what caused this to happen?

Answer:Computer wouldn't fully turn on till I renamed Explorer, what caused it?

Do you have Antivirus protection installed on your computer? What operating system are you using?Did you do anything prior to this happening? Install something, download something, run something... anything?Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to access the Task Manager. Click File> RunType:sfc /scannowBe sure you have your XP disc ready. This program will search your computer for missing system files, and will replace them. In some cases, this can be a temporary virus solution, but it should at the very least get Explorer back.

Please someone help me.I don't know much about computers so if anyone can explain how to fix this in the easiest way. When I turn on the computer a message that reads:The file or directory C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\fidbox.dat is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility appears can someone help me get this off the screen. My computer is still running but sometime it will cut me off the internet.

Answer:Error message when i turn on computer

The file fidbox.dat is created by Kaspersky and maintains a listing of files already scanned. They really have no business placing such a file in C:\Windows\system32\drivers in my opinion.

The problem here sounds more like a hard drive problem since chkdsk is involved. You need to run chkdsk /r.

When booting into Safe Mode, try the "Last known good config" option instead of Safe Mode itself.

Answer:Error message when I turn on my computer

why have you got 2 active antiviruses

uninstall AVG
reboot then
Delete any existing version of ComboFix you have sitting on your desktop
Please read and follow all these instructions very carefully Do not edit or remove any information or user names etc, otherwise we cannot fix the problem. If you insist on editing out anything then I will close the topic & refuse to offer any help.

Download ComboFix from Here or Hereto your Desktop.
As you download it rename it to username123.exe
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop and run from the desktop and not any other folder on your computer**
1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus and anti-malware real-time protection and any script blocking components of them or your firewall before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results" or stop combofix running at all
Click on THIS LINK to see instructions on how to temporarily disable many security programs while running combofix. The list does not cover every program. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re enable the protection again after combofix has finished

I have a PC that is plugged into a 4 plug adapter. When I plug my fan (justr a normal fan to keep you cool in summer) into the same adapter it causes the sound on my computer to change on my settings to really low and my keyboard disconnects for a second then comes back on. I tried this a few times and it did the same thing each time.

Does anyone have any clue why it is doing this?

Answer:Computer bug when plugging in household fan

That sounds like a very specifically odd problem. I think your answer is going to require very in-depth knowledge of the mobo architecture on your machine.

My answer: You usb devices aren't getting powered because your machine isn't getting enough power when the fan is plugged in. The outlet is dealing with a lot of resistance in the circuit.

Most times I plug in a USB item my computer reboots. It can be my scanner, a small portable hard disk or a joystick. I run XP pro. Suspect it could be hardware but don't know where to start looking

Someone I teach has just rung me today with exactly the same problem, although their OS is Win 98SE. Ok, we discussed about shutting it down. I figured out maybe it wil be better to shut it down every night just because of the bad electromagnetic stuff that come out of it. So the cable to my monitor burned, so I bought a new one. The lamp on the transformer below or whatever it is is just so bright and the computer is right to my head when I sleep. Can I do some damage to my computer by turning it of AND THAN plugging it off?

As long as you make a proper computer shutdown. Then plugging it off is not an issue but a safety practice. However, QuoteSo the cable to my monitor burned,. Is there any connection to this prior to the plugging off?

I tried to turn off my computer and it looked like it was going to turn off but then it rebooted itself and there came an error that said "Winlogon.exe error" or something so I thought that is prob. where the problem came from.

I don't know if it is caused by a virus or what.

Hi, I'm so sorry if this question has been asked and answered previously, to be honest, I wouldn't even know where to begin with searching for it in previous posts.

I've never had any problems with my computer in the past, I look after it as well as I know how but have recently been having problems with The Sims 3 (a lot of people are having issues with it). My problems related only to the game play and I had them sorted out and fixed finally. I played today when it crashed on me.

After about an hour of waiting I still could do nothing to get the crashed game off. I had tried all the key commands I know, including the obvious ctrl + alt + del but still it was going nowhere so I switched my computer off at the tower. I know, stupid, but I could see the waiting game was getting me nowhere.

Anyway, now whenever I turn the computer on, it does the initial load, then it takes me to that black screen asking if I want to run it in safe mode or start it as usual and after that screen, it starts to load up windows but stops and takes me to a blue screen. This is the message on the blue screen -

Worked Great. Next Day I bring it home, plug it into the same port on my home computer, and after about 20 secs the computer just rebooted. I tried it again on another port, and same result. When I plugged it into my laptop it works fine. It seems to crash when opening the U3 Launchpad on my desktop, but I don't get it. It worked great the day before. I even tried my friends U3 drive, and it also caused my computer to lock up and reboot on its own. Any Suggestions?

Answer:Plugging in U3 Sandisk Causes computer to reboot

Sounds like something got corrupted on the disk. You may have to reformat it and redo the applications. I doubt the Launchpad itself is bad, unless the hardware failed.

I have recently installed Windows XP home on a friend's Packard Bell machine which had 98 previously. He tells me that he is having problems with USB devices. At the moment he has a wireless logitech mouse, and also plugs and unplugs a digital camera and a flash memory stick thing. The problem arises when he plug in the camera or the flash memory stick, the computer freezes and he has no choice but to switch off using the power button (Ctrl Alt Del doesn't even work). I was thinking of updating the USB controller driver (possible?). Any ideas why this is happening and how to resolve it?Thanks, David.

I'm trying to get my webcam to work on my computer. (it is a USB, logitech clicksmart 510 webcam) But if I plug it in while the computer is running the computer shuts down. Then with it still plugged in the computer will not restart. It only turns on momentarily for about one or two seconds and then turns off. The only way to restart the computer is to unplug the webcam and reset the power supply. I plugged in just the cable and the computer works normally. I tried the webcam on another computer with the same operating system and it works fine.
My computer is running windows 2000 professional, has an asus (model TUSI-M) mainboard with a 1200 mhz celeron processor, 128mb ram, 115 watt power supply. It has four USB slots, two on the mainboard and two on a card. I've tried different USB slots without success but i know they work for other stuff like flashcards etc.

Answer:Plugging in my USB webcam shuts down computer

Hi and welcome. 115 watt power supply? How large is the power supply on the other system where the camera works? What other hardware devices are connected to the problem computer? Sounds like you simply don't have enough power.

It appears that the modem has developed a fault, likely to be drawing an excess power when connected to your computer. Try another Modem.

Hey guys,

I have the strangest of problems. Our family, after being on 56k dialup for years, connected to an ADSL provider, and bought a new computer. Yes, we're finally with the age of technology, hehehe. Anyway, so yesterday we went out and bought our modem. We had to buy a router because we want ADSL on 2 computers. Personally i don't know anything about networking, but i consider myself, not an expert, but atleast fairly knowledgable with computers. So when i got home yesterday with the modem i decided to see how i go installing it all myself, after all it can't be that hard (and it isn't). I expected it to work "out of the box" so to speak.

The problem is, after plugging everything into the modem, etc etc. When i plug the effernet cable into the back of the PC (with the modem router attached on the other end), the computer instantly restarts itself, it's really wierd. It's like someone has switched it off then on again (i mean theres no shutting down or anything). I thought maybe it's supposed to do that, so i let it load up again, but before it can load windows fully, it restarts itself again. This cycle repeats until i take the effernet cable out. Then the next time windows loads up i get one of those "windows has recovered from a serious error: Send report/ Don't send" messages.

I'm really baffled. It's a new computer too (2 weeks old), so there shouldn't be any problems.

Hello everyone

So today I decided to clean up my cluttered wires a bit and I took some usbs out and put them in the back. When I tried to put my speaker in a back USB slot, it struggled to go in so I pushed it a bit harder and it went back in and my PC shut down. And it won't turn back from on. I don't know what to do, I might have to send it for repairs but if anyone could help I'd be very grateful. Specs here. I'm on a phone so I cant copy and paste the specs so I'll paste the link to it instead

Please help me.

Like the title says, my PC freezes when I plug in headphones and sometimes front panel USB devices. I had this problem previously on my old PC build but have upgraded my motherboard, CPU, GPU, case, and power supply since then (basically a new computer) only to have the same problem still... I have rebuilt the computer twice and checked all wires and motherboard to make sure nothing is grounding out. I have also tried different wall outlets in my house to eliminate the possibility of electrical problems from the outlet I was using. Not only am I not able to use my front panel connections, but also my comp runs very choppy after it freezes from plugging in devices and I am forced to restart my comp several times to get it working correctly again. I am in desperate need of some advice, please help me

When I plug in my headphones, the computer will freeze. I can't get it to un-freeze without a forced shut-down.

After I force shutdown the computer, if I just push the power again the computer fans will whirl, it'll start running, etc. then go blank again. The only way to fix this is to unplug the computer and leave it for 10 seconds.

After the computer starts back up, the taskbar will always be messed up; the icons will gather on the right side of the taskbar instead of the left side. I have a script to reset the taskbar and fix this.

The freezing doesn't happen until at least a few hours after I startup my computer. And it always happens when I plug in the headphones.

This problem started happening a week ago. I don't remember making any changes to my computer for the past month.

I updated my audio driver to the lastest, but no luck.

I would be grateful if anyone could help me on this issue

This sounds like a hardware problem, especially a short in the speakers/headphones or the laptop circuit.

Hey guys, occasionally, when I plug in my computer, a little spark is made. Is this something I should worry about? Or is it just because the plug is being plugged in upside down as the Schuko plug variant used in Korea allow you to plug in the line pin into neutral and the neutral pin into line? I assume that modern computers have protection against this but just in case, I am asking this as usually sparks in electronics can damage them. Thanks.

Answer:Spark made when plugging in computer

What happens if you turn the switch on the power supply to off first? Most power supplies, if the power supply switch is left on or ones that do not have a switch, when plugged in can draw a small arc. Its nothing to be concerned about, as many electronic/electric items will do that - it starts to draw current as soon as its plugged in.

On a PC, if the power supply power switch is on, the power supply is working to some degree.

I have this weird issue where my notebook starts to stutter after coming out of hibernate whenever the power is plugged in. The mouse doesn't move, the audio goes out, videos stop, and sometimes I get a black screen that disappears in ten seconds. Sometimes after the black screen I get a message saying my video driver recovered. I am running a nVidia 8600M GT with up-to-date drivers. The problems usually resolve if I restart but it's really irritating that I can't get out of hibernate without this stuttering. Switching back to Vista also fixes it. I've tried reinstalling drivers and reformatting with a clean install of Windows 7 neither of which helped. I didn't have this problem with Vista although I had another power issue in Vista (which I still have with 7) where if I put my computer into hibernate with the power plugged in, the computer wouldn't start again until I unplug it and take out the battery.

Would be great if someone could give me an idea of what's going on. Thanks!

Answer:Plugging in notebook computer causes stuttering

Did it just start doing this recently?
If so then you could try doing a system restore to an earlier time and see if that helps.

Hello, everyone!

I would like to request for assistance regarding the stated problem above. Whenever I plug-in my flash drive into the front USB port of my CPU casing, my computer suddenly stops responding to the point that you cannot do anything without pressing the RESTART button. Then, after restart, it will load the Windows very, very slow. The firewall stops wprking, the antivirus cannot start properly and even any application I run will not run. I tried the SFC /SCANNOW thrice after restarting but no problem was found. To restore to normal speed, I need to restart the PC to almost twice or thrice and then wait a few minutes after showing the Desktop. After that, the PC runs smoothly. The flash drive that I plugged in is working properly, I tested it to another PC and no problem was encountered. For now, I do not use the USB ports of my PC to avoid that annoying freezing.

I suspected the USB port is the culprit, maybe have problem in connection or something. I am planning to buy a new casing but if it is not the problem, I may not buy a new one. So, please, hep me with this so that I can save money. ANY help & suggestion would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance, SevenForums guys!

Answer:Computer Freezes after Plugging In USB Device

If its rebooting very slow; and it freezes; it sounds to me like there could be a bunch of malware; spyware; and or adware in your system causing that. As that stuff will slow down windows a lot!. I would download, install, and run the following programs from the links below and see what they come up with:

Downloading AdwCleaner

SUPERAntiSpyware - Downloading File

Also; one last thing: after you run all those programs; do a disk defrag and let it run and that should speed things up a bit as well hopefully.

I recently turned on my DELL laptop with Windows XP and I the boot menu appeared. I pressed normal startup. Nothing happened and eventually I got a blue stop error screen with "STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7B08528, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)". I turned the computer off and back on and tried Safe Mode. The blue screen appeared again. I shut down, tried Last Working Settings mode. Blue screen again. Same with Safe + Command Prompt, and Safe + Networking. If I can't turn on my computer to fix it, what am I supposed to do? I went into setup with f2 and there was nothing there. Tried running system tests and didn't find anything useful.

What else should I try? How will I fix this without logging on? Is there a way to fix this that is not drastic (like starting computer over from scratch, or backing up all files)? What should I do?

Please advise.

On a different computer running XP, format a floppy and copy CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to it. They're both in the root of C:. Stick the floppy in the computer that you're having problems with and go into the BIOS and set the boot order to floppy first.

If you don't have another computer on XP, you could try using NTFS4DOS and choose the chkdsk option after booting from this.

Ok so here's the deal. I just plugged my PSP into my desktop and suddenly all of my peripherals stopped working. I took the psp out out and restarted my machine, but it would not power back on.

Heres what i've done so far:

-unplugged everything; reset the bios battery;turned the psu on and off

-unplugged /replugged in all the important power plugs for the machine

-reset the 6-way that i plug my pc into

I have attached this psp to this machine before with no problems. After doing the steps above, I am ****ing clueless as to what could be going on. also, my mobo power light is green(implying that power is being run to the machine)

any ideas fellas?

I was wondering, I'm very OCD and I like to keep my computer clean of any unwanted files.
When you plug in a USB does it save any files/hidden files to your computer HDD?

When you clean all/format a USB does it save any backups or anything to your computer HDD?

I'm just quite autistic and I want to know what happends when you plug USBs in

Answer:Does Plugging in a USB save any hidden files to your computer HDD?

Connecting a virus-free USB drive does not harm your hard drive although Windows will most likely install a driver for it.

That said, a virus-infected USB drive could infect your computer so only use USB drives that you know to be clean or come from a reliable source.

If you format a USB drive you will lose anything on it that you haven't backed up first. It does not have any effect on your hard drive.

In view of your disability I can understand your concerns, but try not to worry too much.

One thing I will say about USB drives, be careful when you disconnect them as you can easily corrupt data on them if it is done incorrectly.

Either disconnect when your computer is switched off, or right-click the drive first then choose Eject. This lets Windows unmount the drive so that you can safely remove it.

My Logitech G500s mouse suddenly slows down and acts sluggishly when I connect my iphone to my computer (via USB cable). I am on Windows 8.1. My Logitech setpoint driver version is 5.50.98. I try to up the sensitivity by pressing a button in my mouse but the feel is just not the same (very different). It becomes fast again but the feel is just not right. I tried updating drives without success.

The thing is, this also happens in my computer office (windows 10, logitech G5, updated setpoint driver, i7, asus mboard 16gb ram, etc). Not only that but it also happens in my parent's computer.

When I remove the iphone from the computer, it doesn't go back to making my mouse fast again. I need to reboot the computer for me to get the original feel of my mouse back.

This makes me not like to plug in my iphone for charging whenever i play games because it messes up the "feel"of the mouse (having a somewhat different speed and sluggishness which I can't fix with the mouse settings. It's just not the same).

Anyone knows how I can solve this?

I have a gateway laptop with windows vista. Sometimes when I plug in my printer a USB port the computer crashes. Then I have to take out the battery and put it back in to start it up again. It seems to do this more when I have my wireless mouse plugged in but still does it when no other devices are in use. Most of the posts I've seen are crash and automatic reboot. Not me! Any ideas?

Answer:Computer crashes when plugging in printer with no reboot

Sounds like drivers. particularly USB but it could also be motherboard USB controller drivers as well. Do you get Blue Screens? Do you have the latest drivers from Gateway installed for your particular model? Do you have Vista's latest Service Pack and drivers updated?

USB drives freezing server
Server 2003 OS

I'm setting up a backup solution for one of my clients and am having problems. When we plug in an external USB hard drive, things get all wacky. I can open some programs but not others, can't reboot, and lose some functionality of the OS. Eventually I have to hard reboot in order to get it back up and running. Many new external USB hard drives create an extra "virtual CD drive" when you plug them in. I first figured that this was incompatible with Server 2003 but when I tried some older WD USB drives, I realized differently.

Some external USB drives work fine and some don't. Those that do work: I plug in the drive, it's recognized in Windows Explorer and the Disk Management utility. I can safely remove tham as well. Those that don't work: I lose OS functionality, can't see it in Windows Explorer, and can't reboot. (All of the drives are tested and working on other computers.)

I removed all the utilities that install with the newer HDs, and went into the registery and cleaned out all the remnants as well. There are no errors in the Event Log. I have tried different ports. Each drive that works, consistently works. Each drive that doesn't work, consistently doesnt work.

Tomorrow I'm going to run all the Windows Critical Updates and update the BIOS.

Any ideas???

I have two different PCs One I built myself a p4 2.8 775
nothing special on it and a brand new dell out of box about 2 days ago that was just setup.

Both have the problem when you plug anything USb in to them
it restarts the PC or shuts them down.

I have been looking and most sites say its a power issue but I dont see how a brand new dell machine would have a power issue with the usb.

I could turn off usb legacy support if that will help but I am not sure it will.

The new one also does it when plugging in the speaker jack to so I thought it might be a static issue but I didnt know if that would cause it to restart.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

When ever I plug either my phone or a memory stick in to a USB port the whole computer freezes and the only way to out of this is is to remove the device and reboot the system. I have also noted that one of the two USB ports on the front of my computer is no longer operable as when trying to plug in the usb jack it does not insert fully.

OK, I was having some Adware and virus issues so I got help with those here, but in the process, it looks like I did something pretty screwy.

If I shut down from the start button it only restarts the computer. If I try to open it up in safe mode via msconfig from run, it just restarts the computer in normal mode. If I try F8, same thing.

I get a "your system has recovered from a seriour error" every time the computer restarts. When I dig for details on the error, this is what it says:

Here is the link to the last thread which will give you an idea of what I've been doing to my computer. Maybe something will stand out that will explain what I did wrong.

(It is in chinese, so i don't know how to translate it completely >.<)

And I have to click "Ok" for my computer to keep loading all the other things before I can do anything.

I got no idea what is that, if it is a virus or who knows.

What can I do to get rid of that? Or to repair what is damaged if so?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I am going to clean up my cousin's computer. It is slow as molasses and I am guessing that it is infected bigtime. I wanna plug my external hard drive into the computer so I can backup all the files they want off the computer. I am just wondering if my external hard drive is vulnerable to viruses when I do this? I am going to try to do a Factory Restore. If that doesn't work for some reason I will do a complete reformat. Also it takes forever and I mean forever to get to things on that computer. Is there a faster way to get files onto my external hard drive before I do a Factory Restore? Also if I do a Factory Restore instead of a reformat will all the viruses be gone? Thanks.

Ok, I've already ran all the things to not be infected with a virus. What I did in order, removed the drive scanned with nod32, reinserted the drive, ran in safemode networking: spybot, malwarebytes, removed bad files, ran smitfraudfix, then combofix, unchecked things from msconfig, used hijackthis to remove bad things. Rebooted to regular windows, and cant get on the net. The system still responds but its almost like its having issues getting an ip or something. I also tried winsock fix, but it hangs also. Ive had this problem on two seperate computers. What I believe it to be is some registry problem or permission change by the previous viruses i removed. Please dont give me the usual virus scans etc routine. I've been doing this awhile I know how to get rid of viruses. This is separate issue, please help or point me in the right direction. I also had an issue installing avg with the error code 0x80070005, but i solved this by deleting the two DENYs in permissions. Do you think this is a similar issue but a different permission? Its not also a bad NIC card or anything like that because i used a USB nic and same thing, and also i am unable to do a system restore, yes the service is running, but it wont restore. Any help with this?

Hi. You can't do that, sorry...laptops hard drives and Desktop's are different. Do you mean that you don't have an Operating System installed or it's not working/corrupt? What do you mean by crashed? It won't boot? Please, be more specific.

Need some advice! On a three y/o computer I just installed a new video card GeForce 6600, 128 MB DDR in AGP slot. The second I plug in the computer a high pitched whine emits from the motherboard, not sure where from. I have not even turned the computer on and afraid to fry anything.

System Info:

Abit KR7A Motherboard
Athlon XP 2100 CPU
512 RAM
Old video card was Geforce Ti 4200 (new as above)
80 GB hard drive

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Computer Auto turns on when plugging in the power cord

It might be the power supply, a lot of the Gateway and eMachine computers have problematic power supplies. See if you can borrow a power supply, say from anther computer, and try it.

Hi All! Been a while since I've posted, but sitting here reading other's posts, I almost forgot why I logged in!

I have a weird problem with my computer.....a little background:
I didn't turn the computer on for a LONG time....perhaps a year, so one day, I decided to boot it up and it won't boot past the post! So I replaced the MB battery, checked the power supply, replaced the memory...and it booted. But then, I turn it off, and it won't boot again...same problem with it not booting past the mem. post. So being that it was an old computer, I figured I'd just build myself a new machine and use the hard drive as a slave. There are programs on the drive that I want to use that I cannot replace! Well, I tried doing that, but the new computer won't see the won't even boot with it plugged in. So....

I take the hard drive to another machine that I know works fine, and it boots. Problem I thought. I turn it off, and try and turn it back beeps, no post....nothing. So I tried changing the power supply, and plug all back in, and it boots. Turn it off, nothing. Long story short, if I unplug the motherboard power cord from the board, and plug it back in, it boots, but if I turn it off, I have to repeat the motherboard plug thing to get it to boot again. I have had the drive checked for viruses, and it's clean.
I have to admit, I am stumped! Any ideas? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciat... Read more

I am going to do a Factory Restore. Also it takes forever and I mean forever to get to things on that computer. Is there a faster way to get files onto my external hard drive before I do a Factory Restore? Also if I do a Factory Restore instead of a reformat will all the viruses be gone? Thanks.

OK this is my story,
First I spilled pop on my lap top. nothing worked stay on for 20 sec then turn off. Took it apart cleaned it off with denatured alcohol and distilled water. let it dry for a few days. Now it only works in saafe mode. But it works more than before. I have no battery in. Only using power cord at first. I turned it on and a choice of regular start or safe mode or safe mode with networking, If I pick regular then it only booths as far as it plays a little tune the microsoft shows on bottom of screen. that is how far it gets. I turn it off if I turn it back on same thing happens. But if I unplug power cord from computer and plug it back in turn on computer then the safe mode screen choice come up. If I pick safe mode then OS vista come up on the screen. If I put the battery in nothing comes up not even a choice of safe mode.I did a restore didn't seem to change anything. I have read a few things like the bad ram I changed ram same, I read a bad cpu and heat sink. I took off heat sink and put on new thermo paste. now out of ideas. ny other ideas out there. I is a aspire 5610Z laptop.

When I plug a power cord in, the power light instantly (almost) lights up, whether or not I've pressed anything to try powering it up. When I DO press the power button, nothing changes. Nothing sounds like it's running at all. Someone suggested moving the RAM around, so I placed it in a different slot, but that didn't change anything. This was a frankensteined computer that was given to me, so I can't even really provide much in the way of specs. It's an IBM ThinkCentre S50 (shell anyway), but appears to be loaded with a 40GB Seagate HDD, Intel P4, 512MB RAM, and an AcBel power supply. In case this matters, and I don't know enough to know or what I would do about it, but there are a few open plugs for power. The motherboard has a couple plugs running into it, but one still open. The HDD has two empty plugs, but one plugged into it. I would have no idea how to play around with the power supply. Not to say that's the problem. Thanks for any help.

Answer:Computer shows power light upon plugging in, but no boot, noise, or any startup

It could be the power supply (officially called a "PSU" or Power Supply Unit) that's faulty and needs repalcing, but you were right not to go messing with it as even a faulty one can give you a nasty shock from the power that's stored up inside it. I've worked on fixing & upgrading computers for many years, yet even I draw the line at changing a PSU. I let my local PC shop do it for safety reasons, plus I believe in supporting little independant PC shops whenever possible.

I use my laptop for school and, by keeping it on power saving mode, usually get through two school days without charging my laptop. Ever since I've downloaded Windows 10, (1) my computer doesn't shut off all the way when I close it, which drains the battery, and (2) every time I charge it, it turns off the power saving mode, which is really annoying. This is especially annoying when I don't notice it isn't on and my battery drains even faster. Is there any reason it won't turn off? Is there a setting I can use to keep the power saving mode on at all times?

Answer:Why won't my computer turn off all the way and why can't my computer stay on power saving mode?

Your system might have a virus, try to scan using Malwarebytes, Superspyware , Trojan-Killer. Restart your system then try to download Hitman Pro then Run it. Then optimize your system using Ccleaner. Hope this would help.

Ok well, my computer is pretty old, but its not THAT old, it has always worked very well, and all of a sudden one day it froze and i tried turning it off but when i went to press the power button it wouldnt turn off, no matter how many times i pressed the power button. so i had to turn off the power switch in the back of the computer. it did this consistently so i decided to format my computer and delete the partition stuff like that, but it still did it, and i even virus checked and there were no viruses.

my computer freezes out of nowhere at random spots (startup, windows, my desktop, etc) and when i try to turn it off the power button doesnt work so i have to turn it off by turning off the switch at the back of the computer, please help me, i don't know whats going on!

Answer:URGENT PROBLEM: Computer freezes, but can not turn computer off

Try holding the power switch in for at least 4 seconds. There is a entry in BIOS for instant off and 4 second delay. Yours is probably set to 4 seconds. Delay is good as it prevents accidential power offs from hitting the switch by mistake.

If you are hiolding the switch in and it isn't powering down there are two possibilties. Switch is defective or connector has came off the header.

First of, my monitor exhibited signs of flickering during start-up, but only minor ones and would just stop at the 'Welcome' screen of windows so I didn't give it much thought. Iv'e been using it with the cpu the same time I bought the monitor.

But after some time, the flickering got worse. It went from 1-2 second interval flickers to a whole 10 seconds of blackness before it showed anything.

Now,Iv'e got a new cpu but still using the old monitor. After a day or so, the monitor exhibited the first symptoms of my first cpu, so I just dismissed it. But after a week, It got a hell worse, before I even start-up my computer, the monitor doesn't show Analog/Digital at the top-left corner of the screen. PLUS my cpu keeps restarting after I pushed the ON button after 10 seconds or so.

My question, Is the monitor responsible for the restart and what could be the reason for the flickering?

Thanks for a fast reply.

Answer:My Computer monitor doesn't show anything when I turn my computer on.

Welcome Pokeman5 to the windows 7 forums.

The graphics card might be your culprit. Please update your system configuration settings under user cp so that others can maybe help you.
Usually the monitor won't stop your machine from booting. The graphic card most likely be the cause.

There is also the possibility that your power supply could be defective or going bad. Lots of possibilities.

Hi TheRealDanny.

The crash dump (a Stop 0x3B one) is not saying anything in detail about the probable cause of the BSOD).

Test your RAM modules for possible errors. How to Test and Diagnose RAM Issues with Memtest86+
Run memtest for at least 8 passes, preferably overnight.

If it start showing errors/red lines, stop testing. A single error is enough to determine that something is going bad there.
If it does not show any error, enable Driver Verifier to monitor the drivers. Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
Run Driver Verifier for 24 hours or the occurrence of the next crash, whichever is earlier.

Why Driver Verifier:
It puts a stress on the drivers, ans so it makes the unstable drivers crash. Hopefully the driver that crashes is recorded in the memory dump.

How Can we know that DV is enabled:
It will make the system bit of slow, laggy.

Before enabling DV, make it sure that you have earlier System restore points made in your computer. You can check it easily by using CCleaner looking at Tools > System Restore.

If there is no points, make a System Restore Point manually before enabling DV.

so recently i took everything out of my computer to clean it..i put eveything back where it was but when i turned it on its starts making beeping sounds and the screen stays black.. fans and power run but dont know whats the problem.

i also recorded a video of how its sounds like:
so please help/B]

Answer:Solved: computer beeping sounds when i turn on computer

There are three possibilities here, all related to your memory.

1) You have forgotten to fit your memory back in.
2) Your memory isn't properly seated in its slot(s)
3) You have killed your memory because of not following antistatic procedures.

I'm suspecting it is either 2 or 3.

As the title said, my computer freezes during games. When it freezes the screen just stop at the last frame (so no black screen or anything like that) and I can hear the game for about a second before it turns to a low clicking sound. At which point I have to manually shut down the computer and restart it. Nothing else works. Then I get the usual question of how I want to start the computer, I always pick “start normally” and it’s like it never happened.

I think it’s because the GPU is overheating, because that’s the only component that’s really hot. When I check the temp while playing it’s usually building up to about 60C (24-30C on idle) and stays around that number. And it fells really hot when I touch it after it’s happened. The only problem with that theory is that I can play every game out there usually on the best setting (haven’t tried every powerful game out there) and not a single problem with lag or such. Then again, I’ve never had that problem with MW3, and the temp stays around 50C on that. Not to say that the GPU is really that great. It’s average at best, but I’m not a hardcore gamer or anything so figured I didn’t need the best.
I built the computer myself in June 2011. And it went fine without any problems until maybe 6 months ago, not really sure when it happened.

Here’s what I’ve done so far
I’ve... Read more

So I've been having this problem with my computer for a couple of weeks now.
After I choose to shutdown my computer , windows does it as usual and is very quick at it since I have an SSD, however after the shutdown screen disappears and my monitor turns off, the fans are still spinning and the motherboard makes some noises (not beeping) as if it's going to power on or off.
It eventually shuts down after 25 to 30 seconds which is weird in a way since everyone in the internet that had the same issue says that they have to hold the power button in order to turn the pc off since it won't by itself.
From the suggestions that I found in the internet I tried them all, updating my BIOS, leaving my computer unplugged for 2 hours and without the CMOS battery, installed the new Windows Creator Fall update today, updated all the drivers on my computer, ran CCleaner to fix registry errors but nothing fixed it for me.

My computer specs are the following :
CPU - Intel Core i5 7500
GPU - Asus Strix 1060
RAM - 12 GB DDR4
Motherboard - Asus Z170 Pro Gaming
PSU - Aerocool Strike-X 600W
Operating System - Windows 10 Pro 64 Bits

Also since this problem started happening, during the boot after windows has loaded and when it should show the login screen it turns off my monitor for 5 seconds but turns it right back on and it shows me the login screen as usual.

It first started when i only started an Ad-ware scan and it said it found a malicious file. Well I came to find out that it messed around with the registry of my windows32 userinit and I was having the problem when I logged on got immediately logged off, a more detailed explanation it goes to the user login i click on my user and it says loading preferences logging in and then shows my desktop background for a good 2 seconds and then starts logging off and saving preferences. I talked to my brother in law and we found out how to fix this but I now ran into a more serious problem. When I was trying to fix it before the call it wouldn't run in any safe mode and the "change to last good config" didn't work either I shut my computer off entered my motherboard setup by pressing the DEL button just to see if i could change any user login things. Now I couldn't find anything and left it how it was no changes and now went to call my brother in law i come back we go to fix the problem from my sisters comp(which i'm on now) and I go back and exit the motherboard setup and it just goes black, i restart it and it won't boot or anything its just black and my monitor isn't even saying anything about no input signal like it does when i first turn it on or off, its like its connected but no data is being started up.

Now sorry for a long story I figured I should be detailed because right now I have no idea what this problem could be because I haven't done anything to cause this. ... Read more

My PC keeps turning itself on if i try putting it to sleep or hibernate. I know this coz i plug in my netbook to my 22" when i'm doing light work to save on electricity (Our power bill went down atleast 25% since i started doing this, 10 months of this and my last netbook was all paid for), so i'm usually sitting next to it when it turns on. There's no cat, no mouse, no power spike, and i've just used a dozen zip ties organizing the cables.

There's no timer in the bios and pressing the powerkey on the keyboard doesn't do anything.

Wake on LAN is enabled for when i need to access it from my phone from another part of the house, but there should be nothing else capable of doing it. As a test i've tried unplugging the network cable and it still turns on.

This doesn't happen when i do a full shutdown so i think it may be windows related. Is there anything else in Windows 7 capable of reactivating itself that i should look into?

Answer:How many ways can Windows turn on a computer?

mouse, keyboard, hotkey, timer, but wake on lan can cause it as well if theres something trying to access the system.. those are the only ways i know of..
