Show User's "Display Name" instead of "User Logon Name" as Owner in Print Queue

Question: Show User's "Display Name" instead of "User Logon Name" as Owner in Print Queue

May I know is it possible to show domain user's "Display Name" instead of "User Logon Name" as owner in print queue? Our company's domain using generic "User Logon Name", i.e. 001, 002, 003 and so on, each "User Logon Name" will have personalized "Display Name", e.g. Mary, John etc., but a problem is when a print job printed by a user is hold in the print queue of a network printer, other users won't know who is it (the owner of the print job may shown as 001, 002 etc.) and so not able to ask that user to remove the print job. Any ideas? Thanks a lot!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I login into Win 7 as user=peter. This user is member of group=Administrators.
Now when I create a new text file then the owner is automatically the group=Administrators.
Why not user "peter"?

Sometimes when I try to connect to a wifi network, i enter my username/password, it tries to connect for a while then I get the same popup asking me to enter my user credentials...again.
There is never any reason specified for why I am being asked to re-enter my user credentials.
This is extremely annoying. How can I troubleshoot this if Windows does not tell me why?
Event viewer shows no error messages either.
Is there any way to get Windows to tell me why I am being asked to re-enter my user credentials?

Hi,

I just tried to install the latest iTunes update, but keep getting an error when it tries to access the C:\Program Files\iPod folder.

When I try to access the iPod folder directly through Windows Explorer, I get "Access is denied".

The same happens when logged in with the system administrator account.

When I right-click the folder and choose Properties > Security, the Current owner field shows "Unable to display current owner." And it won't allow either of the listed administrator accounts to take ownership.

When I choose Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner, the Current owner field also shows "Unable to display current owner." And it won't allow me to Edit it either.

I've tried opening the Command Prompt as the administrator, and deleting the folder, but it won't allow me to do that either.

Any ideas on how to forcefully take ownership and/or delete this folder?

Answer:"Access is denied" - "Unable to display current owner"

Check in the file security tab that there isn't a deny entry for the user group "everybody"

I've been using nLite to keep a custom made and fully updated Windows XP disk for repair installs and reinstallations when neccesary. Both my Home and Professional CDs, for whatever reason, always attempt to log in the user "Owner" even when that account doesn't exist. In unattended setup options in nLite, there's no mention of the "Owner" user. . . anyone have any ideas on why this is happening, or what to change to prevent it from happening? It's not a huge deal, since I can go in with TweakUI and remove the autologin, but its a little annoying to do that every time I do a repair install on a system now.

If you are trying to burn a DVD, get 99% completion, and then get the error message:

"the owner sid on a per-user subscription doesn’t exist"

I can't tell you why, nor how to fix it, but the following SHOULD get you back to burning...

1.) From the start menu choose "Windows Movie Maker", (NOT: Windows DVD maker)...

2.) Start a new project, from the menu on the left, click "videos", select the videos you want on the DVD.

3.) Then highlight and drag the videos onto the storyboard...

4.) Click publish, and choose the DVD option...

The program then will then open the DVD maker program. And your project SHOULD complete without any snags. (I have done this several times, and it has worked every time! Hope it does for you too!)

I searched all over creation for the answer, and there were so many other people asking the same question, but no answers. Thus, when I figured this out, I ran back to my home base, (Techguy.org), to share in hopes of saving someone else from the same frustration.

Cheers ~Niki

Greetings!

I have an XP machine which I only ever user myself (as in, there are no other users on the machine, no guest account, and it logs in without a password).

I'm trying to sort out my expansive and bloated Start Menu Programs list, but it seems that there are two separate lists. One for "Joe" (the main user account) and one for "all users", I guess because some programs give the option of installing for just one user or for everyone.

All of the programs show up in the Start Menu when I click on it, but when I go into Windows Explorer to try and sort them out, there are two separate folders;

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Start Menu\Programs

I know I can move them around in these folders (ie; putting them in related groups, such as "system tools" etc), but can I move all of them from the main user to the "all users" folder, (or vice versa) without any problems?

Thanks!
~Joe

Answer:[SOLVED] Merging "user" and "all users" start menu program lists

Yes, you can consolidate them all in one, or slit them up as desired.

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

Answer:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

Recently, one of my service host processes in the task manager showed about 13% CPU usage on my i7. I manually restarted each service in its list and found my problems: Application Information refused to stop on its own, but User Profile Service, which takes Application Information down with it, solved my CPU drain. Yesterday, the windows services locked me out. When I tried to stop the problem services, I got "Error 1061: The service cannot accept control messages at this time." Fearing a virus, I tried to run Malwarebytes, but it gave me the same error message. I managed to run it in safe mode, but this did not solve the problem. As of now, I have a CPU drain and no apparent way to stop it. Can anyone help?

Hi Arsenurderer and welcome to Tenforums.
Let's get the virus possibility out of the way:

Run RKILL
RKill Download
Post the log that pops up upon completion.

Run "Scan" of ADWCleaner
Downloads - AdwCleaner - ToolsLib

Post the scan log
C:\AdwCleaner\AdwCleaner[S1].txt

If you're around now, wait for my response - do not reboot, and do not run "Clean".

Just got a new notebook with Vista Ultimate installed. Under User Accounts it lists "All Users", "Default User" and "Owner". I'd like to change Owner to my name. Is that possible? I tried right-clicking it but Rename isn't an option. The computer was set up in the store I bought it and I suppose that's what they put in. My initial log-in as Administrator did not require a password. I've since changed that and I now log in with my name as an Administrator and using a password. But my name isn't listed as one of the Users. I remember going into the Registry in previous versions of Windows and changing things like this but am reluctant to do so in Vista because I know so little about it.

Answer:Changing User folder name from "Owner" to me

The best way to do this , is to "Make a new admin account", Ste up your email and make the system settings that you want. Copy all of the data files, favorites and etc from the "Owner" to your New account. After you are sure that you have copied all of your data, delete the old account and files.

I am going 'round & 'round with this issue. I log on as limited user account for security. However, when I am on that acct, I cannot copy files to the external HP drive - I have to switch over to the admin user account to do so. In order to use the limited account for this operation, I have read that you should disable simple file sharing, (on admin acct), then rt clik on the file u want to copy - this then opens a menu with security tab where you are supposed to be able to give full control to the limited acct for that file. My admin acct that brings up this menu has those boxes to check grayed out. Also, do you have to rt click and give full permission for any file that you want to copy? (once you have this all figured out) - Seems a bit cumbersome. Any ideas anyone?? Thanks.

I'd like to assign a few select "domain users" to be local admin over their test machines which log into a domain. The test machines are Windows 7 64bit and the domain is Win2k8 R2. I have been searching around for the best way to do it but I've come up short on my search.

Anyone know off the top of their head?

Thanks

Create a new group in AD, for example, TestUsers
Add the required users to the group
Go round each machine and add the group as a member of local admins.

Answer:Can't access "Network and Sharing Center" nor "User Accounts"

Hello Jayrrus, and welcome to Vista Forums.

I would recommend that you use Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper to scan your system with at boot to help make sure that your system is malware free first.

Afterwards, you might see if you may be able to do a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before you had these issues to see if that may be able to fix them.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Ok, this is my third attempt, after re-booting and re-booting. This is my wife's Sony, abt. 3 years old, P4, WinXP HE, 512k ram. For a long time now it has been "temperamental". Among the latest is I can no longer "switch user" as normally. Clicking Start/log off/switch user does absolutely nothing now, it merely reverts to the former screen. Start/log off/log off does work, however.
And the shortcut that I used to use, the Win logo key +L now goes to "UNLOCK COMPUTER", a pop-up message that tells me the pc is in use and locked and only I (presumably as an administrator) with the proper password can now unlock it..
Problem: what the heck is the password?
We don't recall ever setting one.
Control+Alt+Delete does nothing here. Once at this screen, my only recourse is to reboot. ("Cancel" is greyed out. I think though that a few days ago it wasn't and I could cancel. Is that my faulty memory or is this thing getting worse?)

A side note: I did recently download and utilize a reg cleaner freeware "Regseeker" which I used to delete only several items it said were not used or broken links. (It also allegedly created a back-up before deletion, but darned if I can see where or how I can get them back!)
I also disabled, thanks to another tech "advice", several services via Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services. However, that techie claims nothing I disabled in his list should affect this.

Thanks!

Just found out that most of ProgramData's cleared out too.
Yea, can't really restore that stuff. Didn't lose anything thanks to my ocd filing system.
Sigh....all nighter restoring my system, here I come.

So now, changing the focus, please enlighten me as to how this happened?
Why did folders appear inside my "oldwindows" that had ties back to my active user account?
Why did deleting folders inside "oldwindows", specifically "protected operating system files" affect the active ones in C:\Users?
Why did some apps that I've installed only on this new image have files and folders inside the old?

Does Windows read everywhere for files and such?
Does putting .old in folder names prevent this?

And how do All Users, Public, and Default User work?

------------------------------------------------------

Hi there, I messed up really really bad.

Long long long story short, I made the mistake of renaming my windows.old file to oldwindows, not to sure what I was thinking at the time.
Used "take ownership" to delete some of the old files like the system32 folder and others.
"Hide protected operating system files" was unchecked when I was deleting things.
(because of the above) Windows ended up reading/associating some files, folders, and services with the old user, I think.
My permissions got screwed up. Ended up with like 8 or 9 security permission profiles for some folders.

Not too big of a deal, didn't realize this at ... Read more

Perhaps if you save to a FAT32 formatted partition.

I have Windows XP Pro., sp3.

When you install a new program, what determines where it is listed: All Users>Start Menu>Programs or "user name">Start Menu>Programs?

reoneill

Answer:What determines if a program is installed under "All Users" or "user name"?

Usually some of the programs give you an option to install it under your user name or for all users during the setup process. So say if I was installing (CVTae) a resume programming on a Windows XP computer it will after the installation process ask me if I want to install it as all users (so it will show up on the all users start menu so everyone can see it) or just for me. That's where you can decide for yourself where you want to install it.

'So usually it's the user's choice of where it's listed in most cases, but certainly not in all cases.

Hope that helps mate.

I manage the Networks for several companies remotely and not all users are computer friendly enough to know both their username and password, only their Password. So, when doing maintenance and I log on to a PC as an administrator or other user I will often
get a call the next day that their "password is not working" because it is using the last logged on user, which this time is me.

Is it possible in any way to set either a default domain user, or set it to a most often logged on model instead of the current last user or the alternative of prompting for user name every time?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 and am unable to get to the Windows Desktop. On-board is Windows Vista, I tried almost all the options through the Safe-boot screen (F8). I resorted to downloading Easy Recovery Essentials for Windows from SystemDiscs.com - this allowed me to access the drive, but not to repair it. I have also tried Windows Defender Offline tool to no avail.

As things stand now, the laptop boots to the point where 'Other User' logon screen is displayed, and no password on Earth will let you in. Also, no matter how many times F8 is hit, the safe boot screen does not show.

I have managed to copy all personal info off the drive, but am unwilling to accept that the only solution is to buy a new hard drive. What about the Windows
platform? Do I have to purchase a new copy of that as well? Why not just take the cop-out solution of buying a new laptop? Is there anyone out there willing to put their knowledge & experience on the table? Sorry to sound crabby - any help would be greatly appreciated. Just an honest effort to try is all I'm asking. Just installed win10 (build 10130) last night onto my Asus laptop. I upgraded from Win 7 Home.
There was only 1 user on Win7, me, system admin. On the first upgrade, after attaching my profile to my Windows account, after the first reboot, I could no longer successfully fully log in to my desktop on my account. I got the "Critical Error has occurred in the Shell Infrastructure Host ....." message.

So I rolled back to 7, made another admin account ("Sam Samson"), just in case, and re-updated.

I re-attached my main account to my Windows account. Got the same critical error. Sam (and another new account, Mitch), seem to work fine. However, on the login screen, there are now 2 "key" icons named "password". They seem to belong to the Sam and Mitch accounts, but I can't find ANYTHING on the internet about this.

So 2 questions:
1. What are those keys, and
2. Can I recover my user? I've tried sfc and many, many reboots. Even tried startup recovery.

The problem we are seeing is with some screen locked laptops placed in a docking station. Our security policy has the machine locking after 'x' minutes of inactivity and when they try to unlock the machine they are met with the error:
Logon failure: user account restriction.
Possible reasons are blank passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions, or a policy restriction has been enforced.
Should they undock then they can log into the laptop without the error, then re-dock and resume normal operations.
Not an ideal solution, but at least a work around.
This does not occur with all laptops, and have never had it occur on a desktop. I am struggling to find an
answer to why this is occurring.
I have tried the following things that Google says worked for others, but none have provided a solution:
- ?Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only?
set in Group Policy
- reset local administrator account password
- ensure both user and computer AD account is not set for logon hours restrictions
If anyone has a suggestion or solution that worked for them then I would greatly appreciate if you could share

I'm working on a computer that appears to have gone through the "Windows Recover" virus/malware. The user appeared to do a good job of removing the virus and used System Restore to dial the system back about a week (which unfortunately is the furthest back the restore points go for some reason). Everything seemed to work except for the main users account, which had it's profile locations changed to something like c:\users\TEMP.username-PC.000. It was pointing to this directory instead of the original directory. I then opened up regedit and found the entries at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders all pointing to the wrong folder, so I manually edited every entry to point to the correct folder and restarted.

This ended up working against me. When I logged into the account none of the shell folder shortcuts in the start menu would do anything when you clicked on them. The menu would stay up and it was as if I was clicking on nothing at all; no response.

Instead of reversing the edits I had just made manually I decided to try using System Restore to revert the system back to the earliest date, which the owner of the PC said they had done themselves before I got there. I figured the worst that could happen would be it would be just as it was when I first looked at it.

After performing system restore I can only log into the Administrator account. Every other account on the system produced the error message "... Read more

Answer:"The User Profile Service failed the logon" on a fresh, newly created account

It's probably a typing error but I think you are referring to the Windows Recovery fake computer analysis and optimization program. The owner of the PC only used a restore point that took the machine back one week, which by the sound of it, was not succesfull. System Restore cannot be relied on to remove a virus infection as the restore point may have the infection saved in it. Also, once a system is comprimised by an infection it opens the door for other infections to get into the system.

Only a few helpers with the appropriate permissions can give advice on Malware removal outside of the Malware forum so in order to have the system cleaned of the infection you should open a new thread in the Malware forum.

The other option is to do a full reformat and clean install of the OS.

I have three Windows 7 systems and two XP systems presently on the network, all with full updates. One of the XP systems named "Shop" is inaccessible from any other system. Also Shop cannot access other systems even though it has good internet access through the same network.

I get "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password" error when attempting to log in from any remote system.

All computers are on the same router and workgroup. All computers have good access to the internet through the same router. All computers have the same user log-on names and same passwords for those names. All firewalls are turned off. None of the computers are wireless. I can successfully ping the problem system from any other system.

I've tried both enabling and disabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP (currently enabled). I've added IRPStackSize to the registry and then increased it in increments of 10 all the way up to 40 (currently set back down to 16) and all that does is change the error from the one in the title of this post to a box that says "Windows cannot access \\Shop, error code 0x80070035, The network path was not found."

I've attempted no configuration changes on other machines as they all communicate well including the other XP system.

I'm bumfuzzeled!

Dont know if it matters or not, but we have enabled policy "Do not show last logged user".

I am following the tutorial for the "User Profile Service failed the logon..." problem. I get to steps 4 and 5. However, I can't see anything that says "code:". Also, in the left pain I only see HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and not Code: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion.
There are S-1-5 numbers, but none ending in .bak or .bk.
No matter what I click on there is nothing in the right pane, but "Default" and something else, but nothing that you've said should be there.
At this point I am unable to do either a system restore or delete the profile.
Can you help anymore?

Answer:"User Profile Service failed the logon..."

Hello Myboys, and welcome to Seven Forums.

See if you may be able to do the STEP ONE section in the tutorial below to boot into Safe Mode or enable the built-in Administrator and log in to it. Afterwards, see if you may be able to do a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened.

I try to login and it shows"The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded."

I have looked at other threads showing your options when it comes to this. I have tried these but end up falling short of completing these because apparently my computer lacks the file "regedit" which allows for registry changes and such. Is there any way it can get this file? Any help on the whole situation would be great too.

Answer:"The User Profile Service failed the logon" help?

Hello Scott, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if the tutorial below may be able to help. Be sure to read all of it for all available options. User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.
All editions of Windows has Registry Editor. It will be the "C:\Windows\regedit.exe" file.

You can try doing a repair or system file check...
Scan For Missing/Corrupt System Files...

Windows XP comes with a wonderful tool called System File Checker (SFC)
Itscans and verifies the versions of all protected system files after you restart your computer...
To Do This:
Click Start menu, and then click the Run icon.
In the small box that Opens, type the three letters: cmd then click the OK button.
In the command prompt window that just opened (a black background and white text), type the following command:
SFC /scannow
And then click OK
You must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to run SFC..
You will need your Windows XP CD during this procedure if SFC needs to get an original file. Please remember that Windows XP can have multiple instances of a .DLL file and remember which version is for which program.
Notes....
I have been asked if it is possible to have a "progress meter" show when SFC runs... This is the registry hack you need. PLEASE do not go messing with your registry if you do NOT know what you are doing!

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

I'm using the current version of Windows Live Mail, which will not allow the user to print only a "selection" of an email message. The user is only allowed to print the entire message or selected pages.

The prior version of Windows Live Mail (2009) did include this feature.

Why has this feature been deleted from the current version?

It is not an efficient use of the user's time to have to highlight and paste a selection of an email into another program in order to print only the selection desired. Alternately, it is wasteful of paper to have to print an entire email message when only a selection from it is needed.

I cannot fathom why Microsoft removed this essential feature from Windows Live Mail.

Please, please, please put it back!

The thread title is a problem that I've been having while trying to create a new profile for work on my laptop. This is the error message that happens every time I try to log into this profile. All the help I've been able to find online has involved old profiles having this error, but I'm only getting this error with newly created profiles. The regedit solution that the windows site gives doesn't work because my computer isn't creating a path in the registry to that user account apparently, and I honestly have no idea how to fix this.

I had a problem with my laptop, everytime I boot it said an operating system could not be found, disconnect any hard drives and I couldn't troubleshoot or repair any problems, it just kept looping.
So I did a reinstall of Windows 10 and chose to keep the files from the old system.
The installation was successful, and when I clicked on my Windows.old folder, the "User" folder was empty while the rest had 11 GB of data.
Any solutions or my pics, documents etc are gone?

Hello and thank you for reading my post.

If I'm logged in Windows as user "u1", I can execute "cmd.exe" "as administrator" by choosing

Code:
"Start" -> "cmd.exe" and right-click "Run as administrator".
I would like to start another "cmd.exe" console as "u2" and "as administrator".
(So, "u2" is not the current logged in user).

The following command:

Code:
u1 cmd.exe> runas /user:u2 "cmd.exe"
runs "cmd.exe" as "u2" but not "as administrator".

I would like to do this in command line. Can you tell me how?

Best regards.

Nota:
u1 cmd.exe> means: I'm running "cmd.exe" as "u1".

Answer:Run "cmd.exe" as a given user and "as administrator" in command line

Hi Lea,

I don't believe that what you want to accomplish is possible. This is because Windows only "runs" one login at a time, unlike some true multi user operating systems, such as Linux.

If your logged in as U1, then you can only perform operations as U1, or as the Administrator. As far as running things as the Administrator is concerned, I believe in this case that you simply inherit the Administrators permission levels, thus permitting you to perform elevated activities.

If your U1 login has Administrator privileges then running as Administrator will be no different to running as U1!

Good luck

Davo

Something happened today and I can no longer access my regular "user" account.

There are five "users" showing in the MMC program in Windows 7 and only one is working. The problem with this is that it does not contain any of the information and links that I use daily.

The accounts are as follows;

Administrator (disabled)
D (not disabled)
DCM (disabled)
Guest (disabled)
Homegroupuser$ (not disabled)

I cannot remove the "disabled" status or rename any of these users. An error pops up saying "access denied".

Is there some way to do this that I have not found?

I tried "googleing" this but did nothave any luck.

Hi all,

I'm puzzling this one. In the folder options when I choose 'view' the radio button to show the hidden files is missing. I've already checked the registry at the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Advanced/Hidden

and everything seems ok (value for 'Type' is 'group' etc.). Using the XP tweak (Kelly's corner #155) shows the hidden files, but the button still missing.

Another thing that I encountered with was that from the start menu the "Help and Support" not working. Again, the registry seems fine, and the process is activated (started). This came up when I tried to use system restore option - with no success.

Answer:missing "show hidden files" button + "Help and Support" not working from start menu

Ok I found the answer (after quite a lot searching), as follows:

1. for the 'Hidden files' radio button - I used methods 1 and 2 from here-
http://www.technize.com/2007/05/13/s...s-not-working/

2. for the helpcenter I just reinstalled it as described here -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rebuildhelp.htm
note that the file 'dataspec.xml' is needed to be available for this, and it can't be done directly from the XP CD. The thing that worked for me was to insert the XP CD, and use the file that in my computer (C:\) and afterwards another file on the CD.

Again, all this happened with no virus detection, so I believe that there is no infection. However, if someone has remarks on the HiJackThis log I've put, feel free to add them.

Have a nice day,

Fitch.

The hard drive is a Western Digital 320 GB that I've had plugged into this computer before (and worked). Then i got a virus and had to do a recovery of windows.

Ever since then I can't get windows to recognize/show it in my computer. I just "disabled" and "enabled" it in device manager to no effect. I have a C, D, and E drive which are: two partitions on the hard drive, and then the CD drive (respectively).

So i'm stuck, not sure where to proceed since it's obviously not the hard drive itself, I use it on my xbox all the time. What next?

Hi all, I promise I've tried to research this problem a lot but still haven't found anything that works. I'm running Windows 8.1 and I'm trying to print from a network printer. One job is clogging the rest of the jobs and is stuck on "deleting" but won't ever get deleted. Others on the network are still able to print from the printer. So far I've tried:
Clicking on "cancel" in the job queueRestarting the computerRestarting the printerRemoving/re-adding the printer from Printers and DevicesUninstalling and reinstalling the driversStopping/Restarting the Spool service in Task managerLooking for the files found in /System32/spool/PRINTERS

The weird thing, actually, is that there was no folder "PRINTERS" when I go to /System32/spool. I know that deleting the files in there often fixes the problem, but I can't even find a PRINTERS folder. Maybe that's related. Let me know if any of you have any suggestions. Thanks!

This is a new laptop, Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, and I have installed drivers for both my HP Laserjet CP1215 and Canon MP150 (and re-installed quite a few times now too...).

Whenever I try and print a document, from WordPad, Adobe Reader, Word, whatever, it just appears in the print queue with the Status as "Error - Printing".

If I run the HP diagnostics utility, it can print test pages, no problem. So the USB connection and actual printer are fine. They also work fine with other PCs.

I've checked the print spooler is up and running in "Services".

Exactly the same problem happens with both HP and Canon printers (both are USB).

Anyone please help!

Hi, I have two user accounts used by my wife and myself and Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) works fine on both user accounts. Very occasionally our daughters visit and use our pc. They use the Guest account. I just happened to log into the Guest account and got a pop up message saying that Microsoft Security Client User Interface has stopped working. When I closed the message I noticed that the MSE icon was missing from the Notification Area. When I tried to open MSE from the Start Menu I just got the pop up message again and MSE would not open.

I would add that I have no other anti-virus software running on my pc apart from MSE.

I would appreciate any help that anyone could give me

XP Home (installed SP2 recently, which MIGHT have something to do with this?).

Just saved two word docs and a bmp file, all separately. All three times I saw that a new location has been added to the Save As drop-down menu. It didn't open to My Documents folder but was in the general folder list of the whole computer. The location was called "FTP File Locations." It's never appeared on the Save As menu before. This made me think of the file/print sharing control, which is now located in the Windows Firewall, but I don't use that Firewall, I turned it off to use Norton. What was FTP Locations? And is there any way to disable file/print sharing without using the Windows Firewall? (These may be the same thing, I don't know.) Also, in Network Connections, I thought I'd find file/print sharing control there, but now XP wants me to run a whole Network Wizard thing..I'm afraid I'll somehow set up a network instead! or enable all kinds of things..I don't want to create a disaster here.

(My son installed an FTP program months ago for work he was doing, but the program was removed. I just searched for it, it's definitely gone.)

This is a stand-alone, non-networked home computer.

P.S. I saved another Word doc and now it's back to opening to My Documents folder as usual..now I can't find the FTP Locations anywhere.

Hi all,

Just installed Win 10 pro on a new SSD, so a clean install. Started installing all my programs etc. Everything seems to be running well, except on thing that is annoying...

I have placed a few icons on the desktop via right clicking on the desktop, choosing personalize, then themes, then desktop icon settings. I have placed, computer, user's files and control panel along with the already selected recycle bin.

If I open the user's files icon placed via this method and I right click in the window and choose "customize this folder" I get an error box "Explorer.EXE "Unspecified error."

On a similar note, if I manually create a shortcut from C:\Users onto the desktop I am able to choose customize this folder without any error.

I was doing a little digging online and some people said this could be related to CCleaner?

Just wondering if anyone else has this issue and or knows how to fix it? I really dont like errors like this, so may just reinstall everything again, but don't want to if there is a possible fix.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

I have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons...

This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct. Any help much appreciated.

Thanks.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

After reformatting our hard drive, and re-installing Windows XP Home edition, I've noticed that theres (what seems to be) a psuedo profile.

To explain:

We haven't set up any specific user profiles, so when we boot our computer up, it automatically logs into Windows (bypasses the login screen). If I were to log out, or choose "switch user" in the shut down menu, it does bring us to the login screen, where the only profile available to log into is "Owner".

However, if we boot up in safe mode, there are 2 profiles: "Administrator" and "Owner". We also notice this difference when looking in the "Our documents" folder. There is "Administrator documents" and "Owner documents" and "all users" . When we look in the user accounts in control panel, it only shows as having an "owner" account, set with administrator settings.

Why is this? Are there actually 2 different profiles here, and if so, how did that happen on a clean re-install? Does this have any security issues with it (i.e. when I scan my computer for threats, does it scan "owner" or both?) I don't seem to remember having this issue when I was using Windows XP Pro.

Thanks for the help.

Answer:"Owner" and "Administrator" Windows XP Home

Hi ColinandLisa
You aren't supposed to notice the "man behind the curtain" in WinXP Home. You have peeked, so you've discovered the changeable account - "owner" and the non-removable account "administrator". You may be assured that all is well in OZ. However, this type of vigilance will pay dividends.

Answer:No "ScreenShots" Folder in Pictures To Hold " Print Screen" Images!

Is it just saving the screenshots somewhere else or is it just not taking screenshots at all? Don't know about your specific system, but on my Win 10 lappy, the screen blinks (dims) when the screenshot is taken.
Did you look in all the subfolders in Pictures to see if Screenshots folder is buried in one of them?
Win 10 also has a Snipping Tool which will allow you to put a box around the part of the screen you want to capture and then you can save it wherever you want. Maybe that's easier, and you can pin the Snipping Tool to the Start menu so it's easy to find.

Hello , I recently changed my username in win-7, beside changing it in the "User account" panel, I also changed the user profile folder and registry entry for that, the only thing I could not change is the value in "Net users"...

The problem that I have with that is wen trying to login remotely with RDP I still need to use the old username.
I know I can add a new user but can I change the exiting entry instead? what is it exactly? what's the difference between "Net users" and "User accounts" ?

Thank you.

Answer:"User accounts" and "Net users"

Hi, when you first install windows it cretes a user who is registered owner , you need to change this to your new registered owner or it will crop up all over the place. Open regedit do the appropriate backup first and navigate to this key:-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion in the right pane locate the entry for registered owner(may also have registered organisation populated as well) and right click select modify, type your new user name in the value data box.

For net user have a look through this:-

I am infected with this crap and have used the following tools to try to get rid of it:
Windows Defender, Unible PowerSuite (SpeedUpMyPC, Registry Booster & Spyware Protector) and Norton's One Button Checkup and WinDoctor.

Not sure if it's related, but my DISPLAY is locked at 640 X 480.

Atempted the 5 Step Process before posting and Panda ActiveScan froze and crashed after scanning 59253 files, but not before identifying 28 spyware files.

I keep my audio files in folders. And I don't know why every now and then when I open these folders all the files show in "Tile mode". I hate that and always convert them all to "List mode". But in a few days they go back to all showing in "Tile mode" again.

Is there a way to make all the contents of folders Always show in "List mode"?

Hi

I'm getting this error message.
I did a google search and found this: You receive a "The User Profile Service failed the logon
But did not help me. I also did a search here and found a few topics with this error message though they didn't solve my problem either, because mine problem seems to be different.

I can login to existing accounts. But I can't login to new ones.
So when I go to the registry editor there's no folder for the new accounts. They just don't exist at all. Only the existing ones.
I create a new user account at the Users menu in Control panel and they show up at login screen. When I click them, it starts the waiting icon saying "Logging in" then after a few seconds, this error message pops up. I can click OK and then it says "logging off" and goes back to the login screen.
I do have access to an administrator account and a standard account, I can log in to both

I don't have any system restore points before this started happening. i'm using ESET Smart Security as my antivirus but I don't think it's causing the problem, I uninstalled it and it didn't work then either so I reinstalled it back.
Please help me what could be wrong?

Answer:Can't create new user accounts "The user profile service failed..."

Can you yell us when the problem started and were you on the system when it is doing this if so what were you doing when it started.

Coming up with a title to this problem was difficult.

I'm certain I'll have probably put this in the wrong area of the forums, and if I did, I am quite sorry. I honestly don't know what my problem is, but I believe it's software or core Windows-related.

As for the problem, I have XP Pro and a fairly old computer. I mention both only in case they are relevant.

Typically, I leave my computer running most of the time. I have for years. My sister and I both have user accounts (though she rarely uses hers), and I'm very paranoid. So at night, before sleeping, I just "switch accounts" and let the computer stay on the user login screen until I wake. Upon which point I log in and carry on where I left off. This has never ever been a problem before. Until three days ago; and it's gotten progressively worse for some reason.

A few days ago, I woke up and powered my monitor on, and the screen was black. The computer is old enough to lock up on rare occasions, but this looked more like the computer was trying to shut down or restart and just hadn't sorted itself out yet. I was confused, but not too alarmed. I let the computer sit for a long time (I think perhaps a couple of hours) before realizing it was not going to do anything.

I tried running task manager (the only thing I ever know to do when something seems to be locked up), but of course, it did nothing. As I was probably not even logged in anywhere.

Eventually, the only thing I co... Read more

Answer:Problems When Logging Back In to User Account After Using "Switch User", XP Pro

Greetings, Lapinne.

I just wanted to be the first in line for some of that 'ferocious idolization'.

Frankly, I've had bad experiences with XP's 'switch user' protocol - it's been my experience that it's a problem waiting to happen.

Until I (and others) can wade through your symptoms, you might consider some consolidation: copy/transfer any important data to a central location, and trim your user accounts until you are left with the bare minimum (one Admin, one Guest). Then see if your issues persist (what I'm aiming at here is the possibility of corrupt user profiles - a common occurrence).

Hang in there, be patient, and welcome to MG! :major

hrrm tbird and hotmail from the thunderbird faq
Can I access my Netscape WebMail or Hotmail accounts through Thunderbird?

No. Netscape WebMail and Hotmail use proprietary protocols. To access WebMail directly through an e-mail client requires you to use Netscape 6+ with AIM; to do so with Hotmail requires either Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. Of course, you can access your WebMail account on the Web at http://webmail.netscape.com/, or Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com/.

Hi guys,

as most of you will be aware with the show desktop feature in the windows, which in the system tray on bottom right of your screen.

I need a tweak or registry edit to make it do "Win + M" Minimize all Windows, instead of "Win + D" show desktop.

Reason is it hides my gadgets and docks, while Win + M keep those on the desktop and just minimizes the windows.

any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks, and sorry mods if i posted my first post in the wrong section. please move it to right section.

Regards,
Summer.

Welcome to the Forums.

You could post a request here:

The Mod on that forum and others there use AutoHotkey as well as other programming tools. But ahk should be suited to the task. If someone knows an existing freeware that already does it, they will suggest it. Your request sounds like the type of thing they would take on if there's no existing freeware.

I have been unsuccessful in trying to print from several programs, although nothing else suspicious has been noted. The following is what happened as I tried printing from various programs:

Opera 7.50 -- Print preview simply provides no response (sometimes shuts down). Straight print attempt = shutdown w/error msg ""has encountered a problem and needs to close"

Notepad -- "Handle is invalid."

IE 6.00 -- Print preview shows, but attempt to print leads to msg "There was an internal error."

MS Word 2003 -- Print preview shows, but attempt to print leads to msg "… cannot … problem with current setup"

I have someone who works from home to connect to an office computer to access a database. Now, she wants to print out of her printer from home from the program she is using. She connects via VNC on a dial-up. Now the only thing I had in mind was to some how network her printer to be available to an outside source from home and add it as a shared printer on the office computer. Is this possible with a dial-ip and also not being on the same network? I wonder if I could do it through HTTP or something similiar?

Answer:Using VNC and want to print to "home" printer from "office" computer

That is one of the limitations of VNC. You can't print to a local printer.

I've looked for a straightforward answer to this, and the searches I done can't find this...

1. This concerns a Win 10 User Accounts on both a single PC, and multiple PC's that are *not* in a Domain.
2. These are all "local" User Accounts.
3. These PC's are highly secured; no "cloud" accounts, "OneDrive" deinstalled/disabled (both in Win 10 and Office).
4. PC's are identical (hardware) and are being loaded from a master disk image. The only differences should be:
a. PC name
b. Windows Key #
c. MAC addresses

I'm setting up several User Accounts from a "prototype" Account, and would like to copy the user "settings" all all of them. "Settings" means
1. For Win 10 - Desktop configuration, Personalization, File Explorer options, File Sharing options (on a "base" Win 10 disk image).
2. For Office 20xx - All "settings" except for "Personalize your copy of MS Office" (on a "base" + MS Office 20xx disk image
3. For other software (on a "base" + MS Office 20xx + other, AKA "Full-load" disk image)

I'm assuming (a bad thing to do) that the needed info resides in:
1. The Registry in
a. HK Current User
b. HK Users
2. Each User's AppData

To do this, are there:
1. Copy/Paste from the Registry/AppData procedures
2. Commercial/Open Source tools
to do this?

Thanks!

The best way to do this is to install software and customize the default user profile in Audit Mode, then sysprep the image and deploy it. This procedure does everything you listed.

Been doing PCs and Windows since they started. Been doing unices and other OSs too, and this is an odd one.

My machine suddenly stopped seeing shares to other machines on the house network. My response was to go slogging through network permissions, sharing enables, and so on.

It took a while, but I found that (I think...) sharing stopped because my user account name suddenly became "User", invalidating the user and password credentials when I access other machines on the net. The other machines on the net are unaffected. They talk to each other just fine.

But this machine now shows the filter that used to be "\Users\bobby" is now "\Users\User". The folder "\bobby" appeared on the desktop at about the same time. The contents of \bobby on the desktop appear to match the contents of \Users\User. When I get into user accounts in the control panel, only the "bobby" account appears to change. Moreover, getting to account properties through system management says that the account (short?) name is "User" but the account full name is "bobby". There is no "User" account to modify.

When I restart, the only user name presented is "bobby" and this accepts the expected password.

I have no clue how the system is operating with "User" as an alias for "bobby", logging in as "bobby", but not having a \User\bobby folder nor having \\Acme\bobby credentials for network ... Read more

I just spend a long time fighting this problem and wanted to share how I fixed.
I was seeing this error on a Win7 standalone system (local profiles, not logging into a domain). I had two profiles on it that worked fine, but if I tried to create a new profile, I would be unable to logon to it and would get the "User Profile Service
failed the logon" message.
I tried the steps in KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947215 but they did not fix the problem.
After looking through the event logs, I found the following 1509 error in the Application log:
Windows cannot copy file
\\?\C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\SQM\iesqmdata_setup0.sqm to location
\\?\C:\Users\TEMP\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\SQM\iesqmdata_setup0.sqm. This error may be caused by network problems or insufficient security rights.

DETAIL - Access is denied.
After binging iesqmdata_setup0.sqm I ran across this article:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/e87aafae-c3aa-48df-b188-0ba161fcb9c7
The suggestion there:
"I suggest you check the Advanced Security Settings for the C:\Users\Default folder. Ensure you check the box "Replace all child object permission with inheritable permissions from this object"."
Fixed this problem for me. I am now able to logon with the newly created accounts just fine.
Hopefully this will help others as well!
