Preferred Solution: Re-installed XP wont see 250gb hdd

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I can't seem to find an answer to this simple question and I found conflicting pieces of information on the official Lenovo product pages.  Any help would be highly appreciated The question is: Can I install the 250GB FDE 7200rpm SATA HD (Lenono Thinkpad's part number 43N3410) on my X60s, Win XP (SP3), model 1704-5LG, which is still running on the original 80GB 5400rpm HD? Thanks in advance!

Answer:Can 250GB FDE 7200 be installed on my X60s?

Welcome to the forum! You can install any 9.5mm (2.5") SATA laptop drive in your X60s and it will work just fine, and that includes the HD you're interested in. Hope this helps.

Recently my native HDD (on M30) crashed and I have upgaded it with Western Digital WD2500BEVE 250 gb. Disk.
But when I boot the sytem it appears that only 120 gb is available!

Is it possible to make the notebook use the whole capacity of the HDD? Whow?

Thanx!

Answer:Satellite M30 sees only 120GB of installed WD 250GB HDD?

Hi

The point is that not all HDD sizes are supported due to the BIOS HDD size limitation.
Easy said: BIOS don?t support all HDDs.

I have read many threads here in the forum about the max possible HDD sizes and it seems that a 120GB HDD is the larges one which could be used in the M30 Satellite.

You would ask now for a BIOS update. Am I right?

Well, unfortunately, the BIOS update will not improve the situation and will not allow using the bigger HDD?s as 120GB :(

Best regards

Hello OfficialSteve. Welcome to the Forum.

Your description of your problem is so broad it could mean anything. Could you describe exactly what is going wrong with the installation? Is it that the installer cannot find a drive to install to? Or does the installation crash? Do you get ant error messages?

Hi, Im new to the forums.

Im having problems with my external harddrive i backed up all my data so i could sort out my virus problem which i used the removal of viruses guide on this site. After, my computer was "cleaned" i plugged in my harddrive and and it was recongnized by Vista but when i try to move all my data back to where it belongs it wont move back. Could this be a virus problem or is my system in need off a proper virus "hunt" and a good virus "clean". i can access the files they just wont go on my computer

Thanks,

Sam

Could it be my hard drive infected with a virus is so tell me how to remove it

Answer:WD 250GB hard drive wont move my files

What happens when you try to transfer files? Do you get an error message? You'll need to be more specific than 'it doesn't work'

I'm trying to upgrade from the 30GB Toshiba harddrive that came with the unit to a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 250GB EIDE drive.
I take the swap the 30GB out for the 250GB put in a bootable version of XP SP3 CD-ROM and nothing - no sign that any power is getting to the drive.
The CDROM tries to write boot files to the hard drive but nothing happens.

Same thing happens when I try to use the 3cd pack from Toshiba or the recovery CD from Norton Ghost.
The computer is not seeing the drive. Put the old 30GB drive in and it boots up right away.

My BIOS settings show it to be set up for EIDE and to boot from the CDROM. What steps am I missing?

Answer:Satellite 2410 wont see new 250GB hard drive

Hi

It looks like the BIOS does not recognize the new HDD? I assume it?s too large?
The Satellite 2410 series is old and I assume it will not support bigger HDD?s than 120GB due to the 28bit LBA

So try with smaller HDD like 80GB or 100GB.

Answer:Western Digital Caviar 250GB wont give the FULL size

I didn't do the math, but that sounds about right. There is a difference in the size the manufacturere advertises, and the actual reported size once the disc is installed on the system. Manufactures report the size as 1billion bytes=1GB, where your computer uses 1024MB=1GB. Manufactures also round up sometimes to make the size even out and make it look more desirable. an example would be a drive with 123billion bytes capacity might be sold as a 125GB or 128GB because it looks better on paper. I believe that tactic is mostly used by lesser brands, but I'm not completely sure if some of the major makers may use it as well.

So I turned on my comp and my screen is blank saying no signal following with 3 loud beeps coming from my mobo. So now I took out the new ram and left the old one in, not working now, then I tried alone 1 512 sd in slot 1, still not working. Iv tried unpluging all the cords in the back, still nothing. Oh and my keyboard light isnt coming on and the windows intro sound does not play when I bootup and the activity light is on in the back. I have no Idea what to do now. Hey I am new here and I like what I have seen so far, I just installed Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 3 for a friend. Due to lack of work space I pull the HDD and put it in my computer then unplugged my HDD. I installed windows successfully and got it set up. I replace the HDD in the friend computer and booted it to verify my work. After running the system tests it goes to a black screen with a flashing cursor much like a command prompt. It will not let you do anything from here. I have tried countless bios settings and even tried reinstalling Windows again on said computer, and nothing changes. I have to say that I am quite dumfounded by this and would like any suggestions. Thank you kindly.

Answer:just installed xp, wont boot.

You need to install windows on the original machine, you can't install it on yours then put it back into your friends.

last night i had a virus, i believe the name was Antivirus7..
it was made to look like a default windows antispyware, where you have to "purchase" it to remove the infected viruses.

anyway i started up rKill.exe and then reinstalled Mbam.exe from a disc i had prepaired and stored away just incase i should ever become infected with spyware/malware..

now my question and problem is, does anyone know why i cannot install anything on my computer. i cannot system restore as it says its been turned off by my admin (its a home computer and im the admin). and i cant even install windows updates.

any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance, if you need any more information just let me know what it is you need and ill get it asap

i installed a new cpu into my system.the existing cpu was an athlon 64x2 3800+.
i removed this and the heat sink and fitted an athlon 64x2 6400+ black edition cpu and new heatsink. the pc booted into windows fine then after a few seconds bluescreened and restarted,it kept trying to boot into windows but with no avail.i thought maybe the hard drive had failed or the windows installation had been corrupted or damaged,so i tried to load from windows cd,all went ok,the drivers installed but then it just stopped doing anything,i restarted and looked through the bios screen but it's all over my head(it will stay in the bios screen fine so thats why i cant see the cpu is faulty).so i just removed the cpu and installed the old one and now the system works fine again.i'm wondering if it could be a power related problem, maybe the new cpu has just tipped the system over the edge,i'm not sure.i thoguth maybe it could be the bios or motherboard may not support the cpu,but then i think it's strange it booted up fine the 1st time albeit it bluescreen shortly after, but then on subsequent tries to boot it failed.i'm trying to identify my motherboard, all i know so far is it's an asrock board,i cant see any model number on it though.

I recently jus installed 2x 1gb sticks of ram on my cpu, when i pull up the bios and the system properties it only recognizes 1024mb not 2048mb, i inserted the sticks individually also and it only recognized 512mb for each one, im not sure if i got jipped or if im jus doin something wrong, the model #'s for the sticks of ram are (1GBUFURTULAA) and my mother board is a (MS-7061), and im running windows XP Home, i did alot of compatabillity research before i purchased the memory sticks so i know there compatible, but if someone could help me out with getting my cpu to recognize the full 2 gigs it would be greatly appreciated!!! and im not sure about my OS and the 32bit & 64bit terms, but if someone could explain those to me in laymen terms and how i could find out what mine is that would help me out alot also!!! ty!

Answer:My CPU wont recognize the 2GB RAM installed?

We're going to need more information about your computer, before we can help you. I had almost no luck googling that part number. I think it's MSI, but their website is denying it exists.

The 32 bit / 64 bit OS issue doesn't really matter until after about 3 GB of RAM is installed. A 32 bit OS will handle 2GB easily.

From what you've said so far it seems like the board has a max capacity of 1 GB, but who knows. The Memory part # doesn't tell much of anything either. Who made it? How much memory was in the computer before you started the upgrade?

Guys
Im having a wierd problem where certain software wont stay installed I have had to reinstall 2 programs over 6 times now it works then when I go back it wont run....any ideas
Peace....Newy

Answer:Programs wont stay installed..

You mean that it runs when you install it, then when you go back to it some time later, it won't run and Windows says that it can't run the program or something like that?
If so, if it's an older program you may have to try the backwards compatability option, I had the same thing happen to me all the time with Vista and it has happened a couple of times with 7, I ran a 32 bit / older program for a couple of weeks some times then it would just up and stop working, then just by setting the backwards compatability mode to the generation of the program it usually started working fine and would run fine ever after.
So. To do this right click on the program's icon, select properties from the pop up menu then the compatability tab, then click on compatability mode and select the generation of Windows that you program was programed for. i.e. If your program was release in the Windows 95 era select that from the list, and so on.

If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.
I have no other sound devices listed and onboard has been disabled....Hope someone can help.

As a side note it is NOT a sound blaster LIVE

Hi,

It's probably the lack of x64 driver that is causing issues I would guess?

Please take a screen capture image of the relevent device under Device Manager, as shown in the image below. Does it show up? Does it have a yellow exclamation mark under it? Is your on-board sound card still shown?

Also try this : Download Speccy and run it. Click the Audio section, and take a screen capture of that and post it here too please.

Hello all,
I have a problem with my desktop PC, it started by taking 1 or 2 attempts at turning it on to get a bios beep and the PC to boot. Once booted however the PC was fine and stable.
But the other day it just wouldnt boot, I got no bios beeps and no video output. I dismantled it and put it back together and now I have found that the pc will boot with no GFX card installed but wont with one. I have tried 2 different GFX cards and get the same problem.
Does anyone know what this could be? Could it be the PSU?
Any help is appreciated, thanks a lot!

I wish this was my only problem, BUT I also noticed in Device Manager There is a yellow ? mark next to "PCI Device", "USB Controller" and "Video Controller" I can get rid of these by updating the drivers by searching through the cd roms but after a reboot it goes back to the way it was. So even when I put in my Display Driver installation cd and install it, nothing is changed after a reboot. Anyone know what the heck is going on here? Thanks so much in advace.
Colin

Answer:Drivers Wont Stay Installed On Pc:(

I would go to your Video cards web site an download the latest drivers. Afterdownloading check in device manager the drivers on the cd have not installed, if they have uninstall them and reboot. When you reboot you should get a meesage new divice found, a search box will come up, cancel it, then got to where you downloaded the latest drivers install them. But turn off all antivirus software b4 installing. For your gigabyte usb go to there web site an see if there is an update for your motherboard chip set .If you dont know what series of MB you have download this link http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

basically, i downloaded updates on my pc while it was running then i restarted to install them, the pc said it was installing them when i booted up, it got to 100%, then it turned off.
now, when i turn it on, the pc comes on, fan's and cpu cooler are on.
but i get no display and no power to my usb devices.
i had this problem before and i solved it by moving the harddrives, but this is different.
i currently have it sat in a corner with all the power leads unplugged, and im gonna try again in about 30 min.
have you guys ever heard of this problem or have a solution?
thanks.

Answer:my pc installed updates, and now wont turn on

Try running it on bare essentials, unplug everything, run on one stick of RAM and GFX.

hi i installed windows xp pro. it installed perfectly. but when i restarted windows from getting updates from windowsupdate.com it kept restarting without booting up but when i restarted with the disk in the drive it started no problem. any suggestions anyone help

Answer:Installed windows xp pro but wont run without disk! what next?

This might not be your problem, but it's worth a look. Check in your bios, to make sure that the hard drive with xp on is the first boot option.
The same thing happened to me after I did a repair install. The boot sequence had changed. I had to set it so that hdd0 was the first boot.option, then it booted without the disk. All the best!!

As title guys, i got an Abit am2 mobo some new DRR2 800mhz ram and a 5600 X2(2.8ghz) processor, got my old mobo out etc and put the new gear in and when i turned the pc on my moniter just stayed black and the light was orange instead of the normal blue when its working, as if it wasnt getting a signal or something.
What is the most likely issue here? im 100% sure that everything was connected right, this was the first time ive installed a processor and new mobo but i know how to fit things so i dont think theres a problem there.
Any ideas?

Hey All,
My machine has been working great before I did this with NO problems. I didn't make not hardware or software changes. I recently went to window website and checked for W2K updates. It said I needed SP4 and 5 other updates but to download SP4, reboot and then go back for the other 5 updates. SP4 downloaded fine and installed itself fine and I clicked yes to reboot.

After it reboot, I got the blue screen of death.
The message reads:

KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
address F2AC9BE6 base at F2AC8000, Datestamp 31b2fc20 (big # string here) - (big # string here) UMAXDRV.SYS

Help, my machine is down.

Answer:Solved: SP4 installed to my W2k pro box wont boot

See if you can boot into safe mode and uninstall sp4. If you elected to save old system files, it will be an option in add / remove programs.

If that does not work, boot with your win2k cd and choose install [not repair] from the first menu. The next menu will show your previous win2k install and offer to repair it for you. Let it do so.

After a repair install, you will need to reinstall all updates, hot fixes, and sp4 [if you want sp4]

I never use the express install method. I use the full version of the service pack. I have installed sp4 on approximately 75 boxes. Some of these were upgrades and others were integrated installs. All worked without problems. Some things to do before installing any service pack.

1 Delete all tmp files; do a complete disk clean
2 Uninstall any software you do not want
3 Disable [not uninstall] AV software
4 Defrag hd

Now install service pack

Not a DVD Burner Driver.... what can i do to fix this?

Answer:DVD Burner Installed but wont let me burn

Be careful not to double post. This will make a lot of people unhappy and not want to respond to your question.

As for the your dvd drive problem; it sounds like a vista compatibility issue. If it previously worked I would try completely uninstalling the device and then reinstalling the driver manually via the link on your other post. If it has never worked, I suggest checking its compatibility with Vista.

Hi all,

I have an issue with my current setup and was hoping someone on here could help.

I have:

A8N-SLI
Windows XP Home SP2
AMD 3700+
1gig DDR400 dual channel ram
300gig maxtor hd
LG DVD/CD writer
7600GT x2 (both EVGA brand)
500w Noisetaker power supply

I was previously running just one 7600GT card on my system. I know that there had been an issue with my mobo as the USB ports never worked (not one out of 6). This was confirmed when I tried to add a second 7600GT card (same brand) and it was not detected (bad PCI-E slot as well).

I had Asus send me a replacement mobo which I swapped out yesterday. Keep in mind that the second 7600GT had never been detected by my system previously. When I rebooted the system with the new mobo, I had the new video card installed (hoping it would auto detect and all would be well).

Windows started and indeed I could see the new card autodetected (as well as the USB ports, etc). Now I had been running nvidia ntune with my previous one card setup and had forgotten to disable it. It seemed as if windows would start and about 1 minute in, just about when ntune would load my "best system" profile, it would cause BSOD with "Machine_Check_Exception" error. Im not sure 100% that this was due to ntune loading or something else (lets assume that the mobo is in good working order, as it was just tested by Asus).

Unfortunately I was unable to boot in safe mode to change ntune to be off. After maybe half a doz... Read more

Answer:Installed 2nd vid card, XP wont boot, help please!

Yeah, you need to get the boot.ini sorted out. If it is corrupted you are never going to boot up. I would go with the repair install, then boot into safe mode to turn off ntune and disable the other video card.

How is the new drive installed......as the master on the second IDE channel or as a slave to the hard drive? If it's the latter make sure the jumper settings on the dvd drive are set to slave(If the former set them to master).Make sure the power connector and ribbon connector(red wire nearest to power plug) are fitted the right way round and fully inserted. If still no success then boot into the BIOS (tap delete on startup) and see if the new drive is listed in the basic BIOS settings........If not it might be faulty. The easiest way to check is to try it in another pc if you can.

I did some registry cleaning recently using CCleaner and Advance System Cleaner. I also did a system restore where I had to uninstall Zone Alarm bcuz System Restore wouldn't restore one of my points.

Now, when i select the iTunes icon, my mouse icon/cursor flickers for a moment but that's it. I created a different profile and I got up to the point where iTunes is trying to create a new profile and it just fails then.

The following attempts were made with no success:

1. Downloaded iTunes and did repair
2. Uninstalled iTunes
3. Reinstalled iTunes
4. Tried a different restore point from several days ago
5. Ran SFC and no changes were made or necessary
6. Reinstalled iTunes

Any suggestions on the next process to troubleshoot? I dont want to delete all my apps since I have over a two hundred from different accounts. I havent gone in to see if my app files are even present since my uninstall

Answer:iTunes 10+ installed but suddenly wont run

Does the iTunes.exe process start up at all (check task manager, processes tab)?

If you have the mDnsresponder.exe process running, too, try killing that and starting itunes.

ok ill try to make this really short story. basically was given a older p3 computer to put a new harddrive in for a family member. put new HD in and cdrom wouldnt boot the XP disk. went into bios and disabled HDD as a boot sequence device. just enabled cd-rom. still wont boot. so i took another computer..put that new HD in it, installed XP on the HD using that computer, then took the new HD (With xp installed now) and put it back in the older one. well when i went to turn on the computer and go into bios to re-enable the HDD as a boot device, the bios wont even load. it just sits there on the screen that says "loading setup" for the bios but nothing ever happens. i tried resetting the jumpers. i even tried putting back the old (untouched) harddrive that was originally in the computer. still does same thing. even took ALL HDs out and tried to enter bios but still does the same thing. so anyone have an idea as to what could be goin on?

Answer:installed new HD and now BIOS wont even work

unplug the computer from the wall and take out the CMOS batt for awhile, and while you're at that - flash the bios. that's where I would start anyways. No idea why that would happen thou

I replaced my laptops (Toshiba satellite pro L450-17K) hard-drive with a new one (Samsung HN-M250MBB 250GB 2.5 Inch SATA 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive).

I then ran a recovery disk (it was a windows vista disk, the laptop had originally came with windows 7, but I lost the disk. Vista has worked before on this laptop though). .

The disk ran and when it was finished i ejected the disk and turned the computer back on. A screen came up saying 'Setup is preparing your computer for first use'. After a few moments of this the screen went blue and a message came up saying 'Windows Setup could not configure Windows on this computer?s hardware'.

I was under the impression that all I would need to do was insert a new hard drive and then run the recovery disk, but this is obviously not the case. If anyone could tell me what it is I am doing wrong I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank, Charles.

Seagate owns Samsung, so try SeaTools for DOS and see if the drive shows any errors

If the drive checks out to be o.k., then format the drive first and see if that works. You should get an option to format during the Vista install

i finally was able to get xp pro installed on a new machine a friend built for me. the problem is that after the entire thing installed and i restarted it, now it doesnt want to boot from the hard drive. in the bios it IS set to boot from the hard drive first so i have no clue why it wont do it when there's a fully installed copy of xp pro on it. so i still basically have a nonfunctional computer since all it will do it when i turn it on is go to the motherboard screen that gives me the option of updating the bios (did that already) or going to the POST screen.

also, my boyfriend thinks it may have trouble recognizing IDE devices (the hard drive and cdrom in particular) which might explain why it was reacting so slowly at the very start when all it had was a motherboard screen. it took about 2-3 minutes to react when i hit a key on the keyboard and about 4-5 for it to realize if i had the windows cd in there and begin installing it. i dont know if this has anything to do with its inability to boot from the hard drive as well. any ideas on how to fix these problems?

here are my computer's main components:

ASUS "A7V400-MX" VIA KM400A Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU

AMD Athlon XP 2200+, 266 MHz FSB, 256K Cache Processor

I just ordered some new parts from newegg to upgrade my computer as it was starting to get out of date, I ordered A new mobo, 4gigs of RAM and a AMD, after installing everything and plugging all back in I thought it was going to work fine when I saw windows loading & etc. Soon after, the windows load screen just stops and it fails to load. What could be the issue?

Nothing was DoA, and I made sure all the new parts were compatible, Windows has tried to do something to correct the problem, but even it doesn't know what the issue is.

I didnt touch the hard drive or any other drives either when installing aside from unplugging and re plugging into the new motherboard.

Any ideas?

Answer:Just Installed New Parts and now windows wont start!

You can't really change out a motherboard on windows. It /sometimes/ works but sometimes not. You just completely changed every piece of hardware out from under every installed driver. ESPECIALLY if you went from Intel to AMD.

You should be able to boot off the Windows disk and do a repair install though, that'll redetect all the hardware properly and reinstall all the drivers...

Ok. So I had 1 harddrive, windows partition of 60GB, had a FC4 partition of 25GB.

I wanted ubuntu instead of Fedora, so I struggled getting the partitions setup in ubuntu install. I was goign back and forth, exiting, re-configuring, trying to get the "no root configured" , until I fixed it. It installed fine, it works (except for wireless). Now It wont let me boot into windows (which works on wireless), I am using grub. It told me that MS windows was detected.... Click next to install bootloader....etc. Now when I try to boot into Windows XP, I get this after I tell grub to boot into windows:

Code:

Booting 'Microsoft Windows XP'

root (hd1, 0)
Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7
savedefualt
makeavtive
chainloader +1

I dont know what this means, or what to do.
I was thinking somehow copy the partition onto my 120GB drive, to back up and re-install XP? Could I do this wit ha boot disk like knoppix?

If you need anymore info, I am here.
Thank you in advanced.

hello, I reformatted my hard drive yesterday and created two partitions on my 80 GB. one being 64 GB, and the other about 10 GB. I had installed windows XP home edition on the 64GB partition. I was planning on installing a second OS on the 10GB partiton. I then downloaded and installed the acronis disk director suite trial software. I was then given the option to restart right then, or do it on my own later. I chose to restart right then. Upon booting in that restart, the Dell loading screen passes then all that I see is a completely black screen with a blinking white underscore in the top left hand corner. What has happened? How can it be fixed?

The intro movie was glitching a little bit but went through as normal until I came to the main menu. Before I could do anything my PC crashed and restarted which I thought was wierd.

While booting up windows my pc suddenly restarted again. Wierd, after trying to boot up again it restarted, this time sooner. Next it just beeped and turned off. I turned the power on, then was able to get to the screen to select safe mode. I went in and uninstalled the game. I restarted, hopeful of solving my problem.

Now each time it try to turn my pc on, it powers up for a split second and then turns off! Im not sure what happened. Any ideas? Thanks!

Answer:Installed CPU heatsink & Fan, now computer wont boot!!!!

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Different Bios`s generate different beep codes take a look HERE at my beep code list.

The list is by no means exhaustive and covers only the most common bios`s

You can find out what bios you running either in your mobo manual or from your mobo manufacturers website.

Help!

Bought a new 1tb disk drive (WD) for my HP pavillion PC running Vista home premium. I want to use this a a secondary drive and leave the OS on the existing 500gb disk.

Motherboard is SATA so I popped the drive and and booted up, all went ok.
The drive was not recognised by windows do I went into Accessories | Computer management and formatted the WD drive. Rebooted and the PC wont start. If I unplug the WD the PC boots fine.

Hope you can be of help because I really need this drive to be working soon.

I've even removed the WD from the BIOS bootup sequence so that the PC does not try to boot from the drive which has no OS.

I've not changed any of the jumpers as I understood that SATA did not need these changing.

Regards
David

Answer:PC wont boot after SATA drive installed

You're right, SATA drives do not have jumpers. From your description, it appears that in setting up the drive, you configured it to be the boot drive. You should have received a CD with Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Tools with the drive. It is much easier to partition and format from that software -- and it specifically asks if you wish to make the drive a boot drive or use it for data storage. Why don't you install the Western Digital Data Lifeguard Tools and then open it. It will see the Western Digital drive and you can have it partition and format all over. When it asks if you wish to make the drive the boot drive, choose to make it a data drive and I think your problems will be over. I just did these steps yesterday with a new WD1001FALS 1 TB black drive and it is working perfectly -- for archive use. Not quite as fast as the 640 GB (as measured by HDTach) but a very fast drive none the less.

I just installed AVG Internet Security 2011, I should also mention that I am at a hotel on business, and now my computer will not connect to the internet. The wireless connection connects, but when I open the browser it will not load. It just says it cannot display the webpage. If worked fine before the installation, and I have the firewall set to "allow all". Any ideas?!?!? I would really appreciate the help!

Answer:Just installed AVG 2011 and now it wont connect to the internet

check with the hotel management. Most hotels have a fee to connect to their wireless. Once you pony up the cash, they give you the wireless password and you can log onto it.

God someone give me some help! I installed a new heatsink, i boot the thing up and i hear this weird buzzing noise. The computer wouldnt boot up or anything. Then i started smelling a horrible smokey smell. I killed the power and began again to take off the heatsink.

I took off the heatsink, cleaned the core of thermal paste, and checked to see if the core was chipped or anything. Nothing was wrong, so again, I attached the heatsink and booted up.

Samething happened again, computer started to make a weird buzzing noise and wouldn't boot up.

Next thing i come here and ask you smart people for help.

Thanks,

Nick

You left out one key part to your post: WHAT DO YOU SEE?! When you boot up the computer, does the screen show anything? if not, it most likely means you've fried your processor.

I recently built a new system on the ASUS P5QPL-AM mobo.
Everything is running fine until i accidentally installed the wrong driver for audio (chose the wrong windows version)...
Now, when i press the power button, there is no display on the monitor, the cpu fan will not run at all and the power button does not light up at all... :cry

Did i just killed my mobo?
Is there any way to bring it back to life??
Any help is very much appreciated... :cry

Answer:Help! installed wrong driver and pc wont start!

Will it start in safe mode- f8 as you startup.
If it will then right click my computer, click manage, then click devices, then click on sound drivers, and click roll back driver- or, uninstal, reboot, and windows should find it again and allot it a driver

I have to go out now, but come back, if you still have a problem, there are others who, no doubt will help.

Hey all,

First time posting so would be grateful of some help with this hugely annoying problem.

I recently purchased a Leadtek 7600GT 256MB AGP card to replace my 6800le and now, with the new card having been installed, Windows wont load.

System specs are:

Asus A8v-deluxe motherboard, latest BIOS (updated in attempt to fix this prob)
Athlon 64 3,000
Windows XP Home
2 x 512mb DDR RAM
120GB HD
550w PSU
Sony DVD-R/W
Onboard sound - AC97

After the new card has been isntalled the first screen gives a one-line description of the gfx card and counts up the RAM on the card (256MB). After this the BIOS loads up as normal and does its system checks which usually are all ok. When it gets to the point where the Windows XP screen usually appears with the blue loading bar the screen just goes black and the computer resets itself and continues on this loop if I don't intervene. Sometimes the BIOS will also throw me a CPU Fan error (even though the fan seems fine) or a 'failed overclocking' error even though I haven't changed anything other than put in the new card!

If I put the old card back in (the 6800le) then everything works perfectly!

I've tested the new card in another computer and it works fine so something must be wrong with my system.

I've tried installing the latest motherboard BIOS, uninstalling video card drivers before putting in new card, installing new video card drivers before installing card, unplugging power con... Read more

Answer:7600GT installed and Windows wont load!

Well I gave up and just re-installed windows which fixed the problem. Something must have been wrong with whatever settings Windows loads up prior to the loading screen so I've no idea what was up but at least its fixed and is a pretty huge step-up from the 6800le.

I have 21 updates that seem to install fine in windows update, but when I restart the same 21 updates are still there waiting to be installed, this has been going on for a while now.

On a side note after leaving the computer alone usually when I come back to it it has "recovered from a serious error" although I never actually witness a BSOD, and it never fully goes into sleep mode.

Answer:Updates install but wont stay installed.

You may not have seen them but you are suffering multiple BSODs

First off if your OCing in anyway stop, return everything to stock settings for the purposes of testing

Run some scans to check against virus or infection
http://support.kaspersky.com/5350
Windows Defender Offline

Run some basic hardware tests
RAM - Test with Memtest86+
Disk Check (windows based check)
Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure (bootable disk check)

Some of your crashes are related to your graphics drivers
Update your graphics drivers to the latest ones, its best to uninstall old drivers then run Drivers - Clean Left over Files after Uninstalling then install new drivers from here AMD Graphics Drivers & Software there is an auto detect and install option if your not sure

Hi there,

I am not an expert, but i am fairly competent on most things - here's my problem.

I recently took a look at a relatives pc. It kept resetting before windows would boot up. I had someone look at it, and put it down to a mobo / cpu problem.

As it was socket A, I decided to change both, and opted for a sempron 2600+ cpu and a asus (HP) k8n8x mobo. After installing the new mobo (with both 20 pin and 4 pin connectors) and processor, i installed the video card, 512mb ddr 3200 ram, hdd and connected the monito and the mouse (usb) and keyboard (ps2). Once i plugged in power lead the board powered up but no signal went to the monitor, nor to the keyboard, although mouse powered up.
All fans power on, all drives, cpu heats up - but no matter what configuration i use to connect the power switch and othe led cables the pc gets power as soon as you plug in power cord, and the buttons don't serve any function.

As for system beeps - i wouldn't know, as there doesn't seem to be anywhere to connect the speaker to on the motherboard.

I am losing the battle here, and i would really appreciate it if anyone could give me their feedback to assist me along. By the way the psu is 250W.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Installed new cpu and MOBO - power constantly on / wont do anything

Welcome aboard Paul, hopefully we can help. First things first, when you change out a motherboard (mobo) it requires, under most circumastnces, that you do a complete, fresh install of windows. Sometimes windows will accept a new mobo and CPU just by loading the new drivers but then there are a multitude of little problems that plague the user forever.

So a few questions:
1. Did you reload windows after fully formatting the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) or just plug the HDD in and load the new drivers?
2. Did you install this in a OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) type case (like Dell or HP) and if so is this the original Power Supply Unit (PSU)?
3. What kind of video card are you using?

If this is in a Dell case as an example then that may be the problem as their cases are not wired like others.

Hi I just installed some new ram on my computer going from 1gb (2x512mb) to 2gb (an extra 2x512mb). The memory is all Geil 512mb PC2-5300. I have tried every combination I can think of yet whenever I have the new memory installed the computer wont start and there will just be a continuous beep from my motherboard (ASUS P5nd2 -SLI). I have sent the new memory back however it was sent back to me telling me it was fine!

Does anyone have any suggestions? I would really appreciate it, thank you!

Answer:Installed new ram, wont start, continuous beep

Post motherboard specs. You may need to adjust the memory timings to get it to work.

Check the motherboard manufacturer's combatibility list. Some RAM will not work, or will have problems with certain motherboards.

You could have a bad RAM slot on the motherboard.

You will need to test each stick one at a time in the same slot, to make certain they will all work with the board.

Are you absolutely certain all 4 sticks are exactly the same ?

Since the old pair works, trade them out for the new pair. If the are good, and exactly the same as the old pair, they should work in the old memory slots. If they do, move them to the (previously unused) memory channel and see if the new memory will work in the new channel. if they do, then the issue is not the new memory, but using more than 2 sticks at the same time.

Then focus on getting 3 sticks to play nice.

At some point things will stop working, and indicate the direction of the problem.

Ok I just tried to install 128 megabyte PC800 RDRAM modules into a Sony Vaio ---there were already 2 sticks of the 64 meg RDAM previously installed--am I missing something here? What could cause the RDRAm to not work with each other? I have four slots--previously there was a 64 stick and then the cimm, a 64 stick and then another cimm. I changed it to 2x128 and then 2x64 -- and the machine wouldnt boot. I heard that RDRAM can be bitchy about using sticks from diffferent manufacturers--is this possible? how about could it be a mismatch of ECC and non-ECC? I cant find any info on the old sticks to detremine if it is ECC or not. The new ones are non-ECC.

Answer:Had a new hard drive installed but wont boot up

"i had it installed and the old one as a secondary"...

Who installed the new hard drive? Take the computer back to them to have it fixed. When you install a new boot drive, there is an install program that clones the contents of the old boot drive and cleans the information off the old drive if you are using the old drive for storage. Was this done?

Gateway MD2614u laptop. I believe I've had this kind of problem before but I'm not sure how I fixed it. I believe that I was told I had registry errors. When I install new programs they seem to install fine but won't operate properly at all. For example: WinPatrol wont accept commands in the pop up notification boxes, SpeedFan will come up but the box is mostly blank, belarc advisor will stick on processes endlessly, never generating a report. All of these will tend to go into freeze mode and may not even be closable including through task manager. Browser and everything else seems to work fine. I have used sfc /scannow and system restore tools. I also ran Malwarebytes and AVG scans just to make sure there weren't any problems there. I use AVG anti-virus and ZoneAlarm for my firewall. My desktop is all the same and has no problems like this. Any other ideas what to do?

Answer:Newly installed programs wont work

Try by reinstalling the programme after disabling the Malwarebytes.

Runnung Vista Home Premium on an Advent T9408. 320gb,  Intel core 2CPU 4300 @1800GHz, 1022MB Ram, 32bit system.Every time I try to run something requiring flash player I'm asked to download it, so I do, receive a message stating it's been downloaded then try to run it and get asked again to download - it just doesn't seem to stay on the machine.Am I doing something wrong here?

Answer:Why wont 'Flash player' stay installed?

Are you electing to automatically install directly from the download or downloading and manually starting the installation?  If the former, try the other approach, i.e. downloading the file first, then right clicking on it and selecting "Run as adminstrator".  Does that work?
