cannot copy or paste, no running programs in taskbar, cannot install....cannot repair

Question: cannot copy or paste, no running programs in taskbar, cannot install....cannot repair

Ok, I am going crazy.
This problem started two days ago out of sudden.

I noticed that I could not see the running programs in my taskbar, searched alot for it and none of the solutions helped.
Then I realized that I cannot install application either, getting an error about the windowsinstaller, so I tried to reinstall it and got error that update.inf cannot be cheked due to some serive called cryphtography something I again searched the web and none of the solutions worked.
Then I noticed that I cant copy or paste either ...anywehere or in any application (so I cant even backup copy my files).

So then I gave up and thought that I will do repair. but the problem is that when I run "run a setup now and then F8 for accepting the license then I dont get the repair option. So I instead tried the second option which is to repair using recovery console and I did everything according to this manual from michaelstevenstech.com and no luck there either

Please help me I really dont want to do a clean install.

Sincerely Nina

Preferred Solution: cannot copy or paste, no running programs in taskbar, cannot install....cannot repair

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,
A little while ago my account on my computer stopped working, windows game me an error saying that the local profile was corrupt and loaded into a temp one.
The account would come back after a day or two and would stay normal for a week or so before becoming corrupt. this account was the only one doing this, but the other day it spread to all the accounts. I tried logging onto another account (all accounts are admins) and explorer wouldnt load properly and i had to get into task manager, close explorer and get back into it for it to run, and even then it would take a good 10 mins after doing that for explorer to show up. Copy and paste doesn't work, no sound and no programs show up in the taskbar/next to the clock
I thought maybe it was a registry problem so was going to restore the registry, so i got into registry mechanic (which has been running fine for years) and was going to do a restore but it wouldnt start, also, the system restore thing wont run. When i try to it says "System restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer, and then run system restore again". When i restart and run again, same thing happens.
also, i have the same problems in safemode.

I use kaspersky internet security and it hasnt come up with anything, so i'm not really sure if it is a virus but i think that is the most possible cause. Is it possible for Explorer to become corrupt and cause this problem?

I am running windows XP and I believe that I may have downloaded a virus in the making of a ppt presentation. Firstly there is no taskbar. There are icons and explorer.exe is running but there is no taskbar. The second thing is the computer does not give sound. The volume is not muted and enabled. And then when I wanted to move some applications and documents to a usb for reformatting it wouldn't paste. Nor does it move. I really need help! Can you find me a solution or an anti-virus that may be able to remove it?

Hi, I recently had problems with my PC. I turned it off over night, the next morning when I booted it up, it would display the Windows XP Pro splash screen, and flash a blue screen for a second, then reboot. It would repeat this constantly. I then googled up to see if I could find the problem.

I found out that the blue screen was a Windows Stop Message, "Unmountable_Boot_Volume." I couldn't start my PC into Safe mode, so I put in my Windows XP Pro disc, and used the recovery mode, "chkdsk /r"

At first the chkdsk /r failed after hitting 50%, claiming there were a couple files that were too damage or unrecoverable. So I exited, and tried something else. Eventually, I was able to boot into Windows, except all my stuff on desktop/quicklaunch was missing, the files in recycle bin were corrupted. Seems my Windows has reverted. I tried to see if I was logged onto another User Account, only to find the User Accounts window was blank, and would not display anything. I went into cmdprompt, and tried to chkdsk /r again, and rebooted so I could apply the chkdsk in recovery mode again.

After the 2nd Recovery Mode was successful to 100%, it booted up my personal settings properly, desktop icons/files with my background, and shell theme. Except, I could not display anything in my taskbar icons, such as my Avast or the MSN icons, even though they were loaded processes. My Quicklaunch bar was missing, and half the taskbar was under the screen, unless I relocked the... Read more

I don't think this is a virus or malware. I tried to update to SP3 and was getting an error message halfway through. I followed directions off microsoft website to run a reset.cmd file and now I have no taskbar, no Start button, IE won't run, no copy/paste and no drag or drop. I also was not able to attach the attach.txt file in this post. I ran DDS but RootRepeal will not run. When trying to run mbam.exe(malwarebytes) I get a Vbalsgird error 372.

Hey - I hope someone can help.

I turned my computer on today after using it last night, it was fine.

So I turned it on this morning and here is what is happening:

1) No programs or files are appearing in the taskbar when I open anything, its just blank

2) I try to copy and paste files or drag them, but they don't work

3) Can't get on the internet explorer, a box like (cmd) pops up for a milisecond and disappears, nothing happens.

4) I tried uninstalling the internet explorer, but the option isn't there to uninstall or reinstall?

5) I tried uninstalling other programs, it says a problem with Windows Installer.

6) So I try to re-install windows installer and it cant because there is a problem with cryptographic service, so I went to services to enable it and it says 'Error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start"

7) I have ran Avast on it, both as a normal scan and boot scan, also ran CCleaner and cleaned everything up and deleted found viruses, also ran Ad-Aware and quarantined 2 or 3 files.

The same problems are happening, can anyone help me

Answer:Problems - Nothing In Taskbar / Freezing / Can't Copy or Paste, Various Others

Right click on the C drive in Explorer and go Properties > Tools > Check Now (under Error Checking). Check both boxes then click "Start Now". A message will pop up saying that Error Checking will run after you restart the computer. Restart the computer and Error Checking will run automatically after the restart. After it?s finished it will restart into Windows automatically.

I'm running Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron e1505 laptop.

Booted up my computer yesterday and I am experiencing these problems:

Bootup is extremely slow.. after initial Windows load screen, it takes forever to bring up my account name so I can type in my password, after that it seems to boot at a normal rate
Taskbar is missing, CTRL+ESC doesn't make it show up and the start menu is inaccessible
I can still run some programs by going into the Program Files folders... but most are unable to open.
Programs running can be minimized and switched between by using ALT+TAB but as the taskbar is missing, they can't be seen when minimized
Cannot copy & paste any sort of file or text, the only way to "move" a file is to open the file then "Save As.." in another location. Also, no files can be dragged anywhere, not even within the same folder
External speakers do not work, error sounds come from the internal speaker as a loud "BEEP"
I've tried Google-ing solutions to this and I am having a really hard time finding anything that will help.. and I was hoping someone here could assist me. Trend Micro hadn't found anything recently but now that this is happening, I can't get the program to open or run at all.

Please help!!
Thanks.

P.S.: I was working on removing ssqrs.dll from my registry before all of this happened but I backed up the registry and it's still doing this. I'm hoping I didn't roach my computer ... Read more

Ok, Hello =)
I am not sure what to do but here goes nothing ^^
I shall start at the beginning.
I had a problem where a command prompt would appear for about half a second then disappear every 5-10 minutes. The title of this prompt was
C:DOCUME~1\Testing\LOCALS~1\Temp\TMP543.exe

What read in the box was something along the lines of
Bad command or .. .
I could never read the rest. After some basic troubleshooting and searching, I decided to post about it on computing.net. In which a helper on their site asked me to use ATF cleaner which i did, then suggested Malwarebytes, which i did as well. I posted the logs and apparently i was heavily infected. (i do not know) their helper then gave me instructions to use ComboFix, which I followed. He gave me various links and such of how to use ComboFix. . .about 11 hours into running Combofix, i restarted my computer, because it had been on the same screen for 8-9 hours now. It hadn't fixed the original problem and I had no taskbar at the bottom of the screen, it was only a sliver of it sometimes, i could not copy and paste files/text/folders. I was then instructed to uninstall ComboFix, then redo the previous instructions. I did. This time combofix went through fine, i got a log and the original problem was gone. however, the copy/paste and taskbar are still problematic. He told me to run malwarebytes again, when i attempted to it gave me this error

Hello,

Came back from vacation and my computer blue-screened (it was in use while I was away). I got that fixed but now I have some new problems. I want to format and reinstall but some of the problems I am having (such as the first one) are keeping me from doing that. Here's what is happening:

I can't copy things
It takes way to long to log in
My taskbar is unlocked and I can see a little piece of blue along the bottom of the screen but I can't pull it up.
I can't install things
I can only log into administrator accounts, other accounts will just not log on.
I have no sound.

I bet there are more, I just haven't found them yet.

I have most all my files backed up onto another hard drive, but there are some other things I would like to save.

Thanks in advanced,
ferrija1.

Hi, Im in dire need of help. Gonna keep it simple, cause this will be my 2nd time typing this up.

A night ago, I turned off my computer. Turned it back on the next morning, and it would reboot constantly. Received a Windows Stop Message, "Unmountable_Boot_Volume"

Couldnt boot safe mode, same results so I used "chkdsk /r" once in Windows XP Pro Disc's Recovery Console, and achieved 50% scan. It stopped, claiming a few files were too corrupt or unrecoverable. Second scan was 100%, and booted me into Windows, but did not load my personal settings properly. None of my desktop settings were there.

cmdprompted to try, and chkdsk /r, then had to reboot to do it in recovery mode. 100% finished, and my settings all returned. Except I was experiencing the symptoms listed below. Please help me. Please. I'm begging you!

PC Specs:

Windows XP Pro SP2

Symptoms:
- Can't Copy&Paste
- Can't Move Icons
- Can't Display User Accounts (Blank Window)
- Taskbar partially locked by default under screen, not displaying active processes, and no display of task icons.
- Initial boot time increased dramatically.

Hi there,I managed to dig out a deleted svchost.exe using a repair tool and put it back in the folder, but it didn't do anything. That is until I ran combofix. It now appears in the processes running under task manager, not that i'm sure its doing anything mind you. Everything seems just as bad.I can't copy and paste, or get on the internet, no sound, and my taskbar has gone old school. Any advice? I don't have the windows disk and have tried recovery console and all sorts, really at my wits end here. This topic previously got moved to malware but its clear that its a windows error now, as advised by Gringo who was trying to help. Have you tried doing a System Restore?Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> System Restore. When this opens make sure that "Restore my computer to an earlier time" is chosen, and click on Next>.The dates appearing in bold are the dates that you can restore to, click on the date that you want and then click Next> to start the System Restore. This may take a long time to complete, and when it is done it will restart your computer. When the computer restarts and you have logged on as the administrator a Restoration Complete page will appear, click on OK to complete the process.

Hi, I was referred here because I was told that people here are Geniuses and can help me with my problem.

Its a long story, so get the popcorn.

I am on a HP DV5220us with no changes to it other than purely software changes. The hardware is the same as the factory given ones and all that stuff. I've had this laptop for a little over a year now and have not experienced problems with it other than this main problem and a little side problem that I've somewhat learned how to deal with.

The story starts with my side problem, which is a screen that shows a distorted image. It only happens sometimes and usually happens between restarts and it really depends on how lucky my restarts are. That issue I work around by just restarting my computer several times until it works again (which i know is bad... but I couldn't find help for it at first!)

So a few days ago, I decided to show my friends a movie (Hairspray) using quickplay. I hit the quickplay button and the screen was all vertical lines, so i restarted my computer. When my computer restart, the screen went back to normal but instead of going into windows, it flashed a blue screen and reset itself. It kept doing that until i decided to just keep it off. I took it to a computing services center where they ran a few diagnostic tests on it. The blue screen message, from what they told me, was just a general blue screen and referred to my hard disc being corrupted or broken or something. Their first belief was that t... Read more

Running a p4 computer on WinXP home, I booted up my computer today to find a substantially tenacious array of problems that have eluded my attempts to solve them. Here's the list of symptoms that I have so far noticed:
-Initial boot time has increased dramatically
-Taskbar is locked and inaccessible
-Icons do load, but are unmovable on the desktop
-Certain programs such as Windows Media Player will not load, claiming "low memory."
-System restore says it cannot protect the PC.
-User accounts window is empty.

Things I have tried
-Virus scan and spyware sweeps show nothing
-Attempts to repair using the XP cd have so far failed, stating that my version is newer.
-System restore cannot protect PC
-Cannot access user accounts to change user
-Kelly's Taskbar program has failed to run, stating "Runtime error 462, the remote server machine does not exist or is unavailable."
-Tweakui does not perform any actions or launch a program when the install file is run
- Removing ATI processes that load on startup in msconfig that look like they may conflict has not affected the problems.

Note: I initially thought that the cause of the problem was McAfee's security center/virus scan, but I was unable to delete it and had to manually clear the registry and delete the folders of it in order to do so. It also had no effect on the problems.

Any ideas?

Answer:No taskbar, copy/paste, moving icons, and memory is unusable. (from xp)

It sounds like you are infected by a dirty virus. Download HijackThis (link below), move it to a folder on your desktop and run it. Save a log, and copy/paste it all here and we will walk you through the cleanup process.

You seem pretty computer literate so I'll leave it at that, if you need further instructions let me know.

***i dont know how to move this. just saw that logs do not go here sorry...but i cannot copy paste. trying to move to the virus section***

I run WinXp on a Gateway laptop which has no disk drive. I do not have a copy of the installation disk.

My computer was running way way too slow as I use it for work running my own business. I have a few tasks each day but these were turning into entire day ordeals.

I downloaded Advanced System Care 5 (I used 3 + 4 previously without a problem) I also always run Avast and I trust it enough that I do not believe I had a virus.

I ran Deep Care on ASC. I believe it deleted system files which I have heard other users experiencing, but did not see signs of this right away.

Instead I noticed a few services I know I did not need running. To be sure I googled "which window xp services can I turn off"
I clicked the first hit which was: http://www.jasonn.com/turning_off_unnecessary_services_on_windows_xp

I followed these suggestions all the way. However, some services would not stop or allow me to disable them but I was able to disable most of what he said to (I think RPC was the exception which I usually do not run but have been running almost all services that are default lately).

Now I noticed my computer started fast. Then the phase right before my login window would appear too AGES when its usually the fastest part.

Greetings Bleeping Computer Community,

So i obviously have a problem which is most likely an infection because it makes the most sense.

Symptoms:

Windows start is normal but as soon as i try to login (tried all accounts) it takes quite a long time, after that desktop normally starts but i have no taskbar, there is a small ridge though which probably means its simply hidden from view, i also can right click it getting the right click menu you always get only "Lock Taskbar" is grayed out (I can access properties though to disable the 'lock' but i can't increase the size of the taskbar). Second symptom is that i can't paste anything, copy works fine but paste is always grayed out. Now the biggest problem is that Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware gives an error as i try to start it: "Run-time error '372' Failed to load control 'vbalGrid' from vbalgrid6.ocx" I tried installing and re-installing it but it gives the same error during the install so thats rather bothersome. I also get an error when i manually try to start 'Microsoft Security Essentials' the window loads but it only shows a red button saying 'Start Now' and when i click it i get an error (its in Dutch and i cant really translate it) but it gives the error code 0x80070433, when i Google this code i get rather fake looking websites with fixes, so i havent tried those. As far as i found out thats all.

What i have tried:

A SpyBot S&D scan which sho... Read more

Two things you can try. If all of the major first responder tools don't seem to be working, You should run Dr. Web CureIt, and then post the log for us to see. That might take double posting seeing that the log is quite long. that program's best run in safe mode. If that doesn't work, then download Kaspersky's removal tool 2011. That's pretty strong too.

It is an XP SP2 machine. It will no longer copy/paste, drag and drop doesn't work nor will it allow the moving of files by any means. There is no error message it simply doesn't do anything.

The taskbar no longer works. Minimized programs disappear and can only be accessed thru the task manager.

Task manager says Explorer.exe is running. It was actually running 2 of them last time I checked.

Double clicking of most program icons will not open the program.Occasionally there is an error and other times there is no error, nothing happens. Right clicking an icon and attempting to open it that way does not work. Some programs work, some don't.

Have run virus scans, malware scans, spyware scans etc. Should be pretty clean.

System restore does not work. Error say "System restore is not able to protect your computer." Says something about restarting the computer but that doesn't help.

Answer:XP Will not allow copy/paste, move nor open programs from icons

PLEASE does someone have an answer, i've been searching everywhere, my Dell laptop has done the same thing.
two days ago I picked up a virus, the fake MS antivirus scanner thats clogs up the system with fake error reports.
I went through the manual removal instructions i found on various sites.
seemed to work.
I ditched my antivirus app and installed avast as is has been very good on desktop machine.
everything was fne until i tried internet explorer, i searched something on google then everytime I clicked a result I was taken to a random site, firefox worked as normal.
So I searched and found a lot of people having IE and google redirect problems, I tried to follow instructions to fix this and someone suggested just doing a diskclean using windows system tool....
after doing this my machine rebooted in windows basic mode, no XP options in appearance, AND no network drivers....NO internet.
AND no task bar, managed to bring up a task bar but it is fixed with links for desktop, my documents, my computer, and network places.
programs seem to open ok BUT there is no copy and paste
drag and droping icons doesn't work, I tried to plug in an external hard drive to backup some files and it had to reinstall the drivers, then I couldn't move any files.

I am in real trouble here. All my wife's work files are on the machine, the external hard drive was bought to backup her data, and now the laptop is completely locked in, I can't get anything on to it or off it.

I really don't understand what caused this to start happening. I haven't installed or uninstalled anything in weeks. When I try to cut, copy, paste or delete files using hotkeys, right-click, drag-n-drop or a wizard, in explorer or otherwise, such as FreeCommander, the program doing the cutting and whatnot freezes. The only exceptions are TeraCopy and the console, and with teracopy only when I use it standalone - it freezes as well as zeplorer when it's hijacking the copy function. It also happens when I hit win+E and when I right click on anything in Explorer. Security Center is also reporting Avast! as off, when in the system tray, running the UI and in ProcessExplorer and Belarc Advisor, it's clearly on and functioning. When it first happened, I just opened ProcessExplorer (I have it set to hijack the normal task manager) and restarted explorer.exe. When that didn't do it, I deleted explorer.exe, restarted and expanded a fresh copy from the I386 folder in WINDOWS. That didn't do it, so I ran avast!, spybot, and when those did nothing, RegSeeker. After these, I downloaded the few hotfixes from Microsoft I hadn't and restarted, which did nothing. I tried system restoring to before the freeze started happening, but all system restores failed - I'm guessing because they couldn't move or copy files.  I've also run chkdsk /f a couple of times, but it's finding nothing wrong. Here's a bunch of data for you:Belarc Adv... Read more

Hello.

I went on vacation last week and bosses computer was running slow so he attempted to use a registry cleaner. This of course rendered his computer useless.

Boss bought a new computer. He needs files off the old one.

I was able to get the photos he wanted off the computer by opening the photo it self which opened his imaging program and using the save to disk feature in his image program since I couldn't move/copy nor drag and drop the files. Strangely enough the image program won't open if you attempt to open it from the icon or start menu but double click a... Read more

Answer:[SOLVED] XP Will not allow copy/paste, move nor open programs from icons

Nevermind. I used XCOPY from the cmd prompt and was able to move the files I needed that way. No longer necessary that I get the copy, paste, move functionality back as I'm taking that computer out back and destroying it "Office Space" style. Its good to be a gangsta.

Enjoy your day

My taskbar does not load correctly and the minimized programs and browsers do not appear. I need to open task manager and do an ALT + tab to switch screens. I cannot copy and paste files and I also cannot drag and drop. I also cannot create user accounts because I cannot access it. System restore also doesn't load even in Safe Mode. I cannot view my Network Connections but I can access the Internet. I have found solutions online which required me to edit the registry but none of them worked. I scanned for viruses and spyware using AVG 8 and Spybot but that didn't fix it. Malwarebytes is unable to install and renaming the .exe file doesn't fix it either. I hope someone can help me fix this without having to repair/reinstall my operating system because that I can easily do. However, some of my files cannot be saved or transferred to a different location because I cannot copy and paste files nor drag and drop.

I have Antispyware 2010 on my laptop and it has caused a lot of problems. IE will not open and I cannot transfer any files from the computer to removable media of any kind. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware will not run, it keeps giving me a run-time error '372' saying that the version of vbalsgrid6.ocx may be outdated. SUPERAntiSpyware did not work either. I've tried FixExe which ran but did not fix the problem of IE not opening. Oh, and the taskbar is missing. Is this fixable?

Answer:Antispyware 2010 has disabled most programs (including IE) and copy/paste functionality

I borrowed a technical book but before returning it, I scanned chapters using Microsoft Office Document Imaging. Each chapter of the book was saved as a multipage TIFF file, but before saving each file, I used the OCR function of the program to recognize text, so that each .tif file saved has OCR information. After returning the book, I noticed that the TIFF files saved are usually very large: one containing 11 pages is over 64 MB, while another containing 22 pages is 266 MB. All the scanned book chapters -totalizing 172 pages- occupy a total 1.56 GB on disk. After that, I found a book with 636 pages available for download as a PDF file and I was surprised to see that it has only 34.6 MB size! From now on, I'll prefer to scan future books to PDF file format as my scanner allows me to save scanned documents as searchable PDF file format.I wish to find good programs (or one single program), preferably free programs, which allow me to do one or both of two things:1. To convert TIFF files with OCR information to searchable PDF files.2. To remove pages from a PDF file and replace them with pages from another PDF file. That is, I don't need to edit the text in the PDF document, I just need to remove pages, and to insert pages from another PDF (to copy pages from a pdf and paste them on another pdf).  In Microsoft Office Document Imaging this is easily achieved, it's easy to copy pages from a multipage TIFF document and paste them in another TIFF document, inserti... Using laptop last night ( Windows 7)- used copy and paste feature from Chrome into PowerPoint without issue.
Decided to upgrade to Windows 10. Now the copy feature and paste feature does not work in any capacity in terms of photos. I went to use Edge, reinstalled Chrome and neither work.
I am able to highlight text, copy and paste without any issue.
Yet, the image will not copy, nor paste into Power Point. When I load Microsoft Office, and try to hit paste, the program crashes every time and this was after I clicked from both Edge and Chrome.
I can save the image into another program, and click on a COPY option and it will Copy and Paste into the programs mentioned. Just not the physical right click/copy/paste
I have tried resetting, restarting to no avail. This only is an issue on the particular laptop. I have Windows 10 on a desktop and have no issues.

I work in the IT department at my company. I had a laptop sent in to me from another location. It had a BSoD with Stop: 0x00000024 I was able to get that fixed by doing chkdsk /r in recovery. Now I am having a lot of problems when it loads up. I cannot install anything. Malwarebytes or any program similar will not startup.IE will flash open then close immediately if tried to open it up. The user said the computer was installing updates after he had logged off of it last.I tried to uninstall SP3 but it would not let me do that, saying the file could not be found. Attached is a hijackthis file.EDIT: At startup a message box appears that says "Notification dll has not been registered, program will not work correctly."and another that says "Runtime Error! Program: ...ommon Files\Roxio Shared\0.0\SharedCOM\RoxWatchTray9.exe This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Answer:IE opens then closes immediately, Can't install anything. Can't copy/paste anything.

Hello,

I'm using Windows XP Pro w/SP2 on a Gigabyte M61P-S3 MoBo w a AMD A64 X2 3600+ w/2 GB Corsair Memory

All of a sudden starting yesterday I have lost a lot of functionality from Windows.

I cannot copy or paste anything (files, text etc) anywhere either with a mouse. I cannot install anything new to my machine. My Keyboard is detected, but will not type.

My Norton Internet Security Anti-Virus software all of a sudden is corrupt and missing and I cannot reinstall it. It says "AntiVirus options are corrupt or missing. Please Reinstall Antivirus." It directs me to the Symantec site and tells me to Reinstall the Microsoft Windows Installer, which I try to do but I get the following:

"Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on the computer." (note: the service is stopped and I cannot get it to start again)

I can run things like AdAware or Spywareblaster and those come up finding nothing new.

I cannot run system restore because it says "System Restore is not able to protect your computer. Please restart your computer, and then run System Restore again." Of course I've started and tried many times.

I've tried to go in and do a repair on the Windows installation but the Recovery Console crashes, and when I try to do a reinstall of Windows it doesn't find the partition that I've currently installed Windows on (even though I can get into Windows, so I... Read more

You did NOT include ALL of the information from the HJT logfile; the HJT version number, along with the time and date stamp, are missing, and there is no "End of file" information at the bottom of your HJT log, which indicates that you are using an OUTDATED version of HJT. OLD versions of HJT CANNOT detect the newest malware, so you should download and install the NEWEST version, which you can find here:

http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe

Also, it looks as if you've installed HijackThis to the ROOT of a removeable drive (Drive P:\>); it might have been better to first create an individual folder for the HJT files, instead of installing the program in the drive root. I realize that you can't install any new programs onto your HDD, but you might want to create an HJT folder on that removeable drive, so the NEW HJT files won't get mixed up with the files from the older version.

Once you install the most recent version of HJT, run it and post the COMPLETE log here, so we can help you solve the problems you're experiencing.

Good luck; let us know if you have any questions...

Is there any way to enable COPY AND PASTE data if a Windows app has option only to TYPE data but not copy and paste? Like - by means of using a third-party software or some kind of editing of the app or its files by some means? Or we should suggest that
option for the developers to add in the future version of the app/software?

Hi!

I was sick of windows and decided to switch to linux. I found amazing linux distribution which is called Elementary OS Freya and looks just amazing. Really nice and minimalist. Unfortunately I'm an 3D artist so I'm a software dependent so I can't use linux because the support for programs is horrible. Even though I managed to get Maya working on linux I've got wrong drivers for my AMD graphics card. I tried downloading drivers from AMD web page, but those drivers made my computer to crash and I had to restore linux and try again. So I was pointless because even graphic drivers wasn't working at all, so I had to switch back. Windows is really good, stable and reliable OS and the program support is amazing, but I'm just got tired of all the same looks. It's just so annoying. Lets take file explorer for example. There's a lot of buttons and everything that nobody's using and it just looks horrible and you have to customize shit out of it to get rid of all that stuff. So as you may have understood I'm trying to make Windows 10 look more simple, minimalist and eye-catching. Linux has this amazing thing that you can change desktop environment. For example Freya OS is basically Ubuntu, but with different desktop environment. Ubuntu's using Unity and Freya's using Pantheon. And the thing is, that if you want to get the looks of Freya OS on Ubuntu you don't have to reinstall your OS. You just install different desktop environment and boom, as soon as you restart your pc Ubuntu lo... Read more

Answer:Do not show running programs on taskbar

So since I've got no help I continued on searching and found a program called QuickHide which hides all the applications from taskbar which was exactly what I was looking for. With that program I could use Dock instead of taskbar and programs don't appear on a taskbar. However, there's nothing perfect and controls of that program sucked. You start the program, then you press CTRL for hiding the icons and Shift for showing icons again. So guess what happens when you write and press Shift for typing capital letters, yes, the icons reappear which was disappointing. But if you would press End key then the program would terminate. And if you pressed End while icons where hidden it doesn't matter if you press shift or whatever, icons doesn't show up again which is perfect. So I did a lil bit more research and put together a simple Visual Basic script which, on startup, launch QuickHide.exe then waits for a 5 seconds because my pc is a bit laggy at startup so I need like 5 secs to be sure that program is running, then script simulates CTRL and End keys. So basically script runs QuickHide, then hides icons and the terminates program. Which is perfect, because when you start any program from dock, nothing appars on the taskbar. So if you want to have the same thing I'm putting the script here under my text and I'm attaching the screenshot showing dock, programs running but not showing on a taskbar.

I have been using Microsoft Office Excel (2007) and the copy paste, copy Special paste functions have worked fined. Recently Copy paste does not work every time, the cell that I am copying from does not highlight and when selecting paste, nothing is pasted. When selecting Special Paset, I don't get all the options for copying All, Formulas, Values etc, I only get the option to Paste as Unicode Text or Text.

I tried the copy paste function in Word, this works but does not copy the format, only text is copied. I have restarted the computer, but this does not change anything. These functions have always worked in the past, this has only become an issue after I installed Firefox on my computer. I don't know if the two are related or just a coincident.

Before I re install MS Office, I would like to see if this can be resolved

Any support with this is appreciated.

Taskbar acting weird :

I don't exactly know what made it change to this way but I think it has something to do with Advance SystemCare application. I had done Turbo Boost on my system.

Why does it take the full taskbar when only one application is running
Please help.

Answer:Taskbar running programs acting differently

Welcome to the Seven Forums
I have never seen that before I would recommend uninstalling Advanced SystemCare and Turbo Boost and see if that helps.
If you can do a system restore to an earlier point before this started System Restore
You also may want to try Option 2 in this tutorial SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker it will not harm any data for programs that you have it will check for corrupt system files and try to repair them. If you have altered any system files to customize your system they will be lost.

When I open one of my programs, I can see the icon appear in the task bar, but when I click on it to be able to use it, it doesn't open. I can see other programs being highlighted when I click the specific icon for the problem icon, but it never comes forward.

I can however click the icon, use Alt + Space, and select maximize and it will function as normal, but as soon as I click the "restore down" button, it acts up again. I've ran sfc /scannow and it seemed to fix the issue for a few minutes, but then acts the same way again. Typically it is one application (AS400), which I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail, but also happens seemingly random to other programs such as notepad, firefox, and IE.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Seven Forums

You need to change it in Chrome.exe in C:\Program Files (x86) with a resource hacker, but the next time chrome updates you will need to do it again.

If so.. Please give me a brief instruction so I will be able to understand and lessen the trouble for you people.

Answer:Taskbar running programs Icon problem.

Your icons look smaller than the default size - have you changed the icon size at all? If you have, it may be that these programs don't have the correct size icons, so the default 'no icon' icon is shown.

I'm doing a repair install of my XP Pro SP3 system. The reason for the repair install is that I installed a new motherboard, and the system is not able to boot with the new motherboard until I wipe the drivers that were in place for the old motherboard.

The repair install went fine until I got the error that it couldn't copy shdocvw.dll. It didn't give any reason why it couldn't copy it. It just said "try again" or "skip it". I tried again but no luck.

I won't take any further action until I get some information about the best way to proceed. I am confused that a repair install would have problems---wouldn't the install program have full access and permissions to all files?

Mike

Answer:cannot copy shdocvw.dll during repair install

If the disk your using doesnt have SP3 slipstreamed onto it then the repair will fail. You cant use a disk that has an older SP than the one installed to do a repair install.

Basically the disk your using is older. You since upgraded your system to SP3 but the disk was not upgraded. So therefor the disk doesnt have SP3 when you do. Cant repair a SP3 install with a SP2 disk. It doesnt work that way.

Background: Dell 5150 laptop. Had problems with mobo. Of course, the computer has been fully updated with SP2 and all other updates.I am attempting a repair install, and all went well until approx 29 minutes to go. Then I cannot copy files from the disk. I looked at the disk and it looks like it might be scratched, so I used a different disk, same issue. It seems I am stuck in limbo with this now.Because I have some spare parts I even swapped out the Optical drive, no difference. Still can't copy certain files, starting at about 29 minutes. When I hit F8 at bootup I can get to the booting menu, but nothing will work. I end up getting an error that 'setup cannot run in this mode', or sometimes setup just runs, depending on what selection I make.So there you have it! Any ideas of where to go from here? I do not want to reformat, I just want the repair install to complete.

Anyhow, the booting procedure is now stuck trying to complete the installation process. You need to boot from the XP install disc, reformat the partition (use the full formatting procedure) and try to reinstall all over again. Hopefully this time the install disc will be read correctly.

I have come across an XP Home Upgrade install disc that would pop up an error message that said a particular .HTM file was corrupt. Fortunately, this file was not crucial and pressing the ESC key passed over that bad file and the remainder of the install went smoothly. Perhaps your situation may be similar.

If the install gets stuck again I would then suspect the optical drive of being in need of a cleaning. Perhaps you should clean the lens first before attempting to do anything else with the drive.

EDIT:
I reread your post -- the chances of both optical drives being bad in the same way is extremely unlikely, too.

When you install Windows on a Hard Drive with a motherboard, Windows takes a snapshot of that motherboards chipset and loads specific drivers for it. when you change motherboards but leave the old OS intact you have to do a Repair Install to replace the drivers for this motherboard.
In the process you are in, there is either a scratch on the disc or a smudge or your CD drive isn't reading the disc. Pull the Disc out and make sure it is thoroughly cleaned with a lint free cloth. If this still fails, try a different CD drive. If you don't have access to one, then take the disc and turn it into an ISO file using IMGBurn then Burn the ISO using IMGBurn to a new CD and try that.

Hello to all you Acer fans,Around beginning of Nov 2016, my File Explorer stopped functioning when pasting to a partition or HDD other than the one where the file to be acted upon was sitting. Message was:"Windows Explorer stopped functioning, Windows is looking for a solution". Alas, after waiting for a few minutes each time the screen goes back to my basic backdrop screen, all icons disappear briefly, then reappear and the file that I wanted to move or cut was still sitting pretty in its original folder. Drag and paste : same result.Any of you had this strange experience ? and is there a simple solution ? I would even take a chance with a more complex one...!My PC is a 6 years old Acer (An Acer update was installed in October) AMD Athlon IIx2 220 Processor running on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1.My basic handling is as follows:-daily Malwarebytes Premium scans, daily Malewarebytes Anti-root Kit scans, Daily Sophos Virus removal tool scans, weekly MS Security essentials scans.-Backups are a monthly Acronis procedure backing up system files on external HDDs. But I never had to restore it...and I dread to !-MS updates: are made after OK from Windows Secrets Newsletter.-I never use Windows mail or MS Office relying instead on Gmail and LibreOfficeThanks for your Help and in any case Happy Season's Greetings to you all Skifferic

I normally use the built-in file copying program into Windows when I backup my data disks. Then I started to use TeraCopy which was great but then I wanted to take things to the next level. Why? Because who doesn't like to complicate things?
I copied all my data from my data disk using robocopy and I found that all the folders only, now have the date of the "time of copy" rather than the original date. I used the following command-

robocopy E: "F:RAID_BACKUP" /E /Z /MIR /MT:64 /R:3 /W:1 /LOG:"RAID_Backup_1.txt"

After doing some searching online, I found this helpful article on how to preserve the date and timestamps:
timestamp - What switches can robocopy use to preserve file and directory times on the target? - Server Fault
So it looks like I forgot the /COPYT /DCOPY:T which I thought would be automatic.

Anyhow, moving forward, when copying within Windows or even TeraCopy, what is the equivalent in Robocopy to a "cut and paste" or a "drag and drop copy" or even a "drag and drop move" within Windows? I dont ever want to make this mistake again and maybe I should have just left the command line to the pros

Answer:robocopy cli equivalent to Windows copy/paste or cut/paste

I use robocopy and use these switches which works well for me /e /mir /np /tee /log:backup_log.txt

see if this is something that may help although it is not the command line in robocopy https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2...dows-10-a.html

Hello all,
I have digged a lot to try to find any info related to my problem, and I haven't been able, so I decided to post in this forum since it seems like the biggest Win10 community all around
Well, I have a HP Notebook 15-ac134ns Windows 10 Home 64bits from 3 months ago. When I run some programs (at the moment I have detected Firefox, Chrome, Teamviewer, Windows Live MSN, and some others) installed by me, they work normally, but when I minimize them they don't go to taskbar, I see like the windows goes up and dissappears. But program keeps running, so I can locate in running processes.
Then I have to find Explorer process, kill it, and firefow shows up in task bar for a few seconds, so I can click on it and it is accessible again in the very same point it was before.

I have tried to locate the "missing" programs with Alt+Tab or in different desktops, but not available.
I have also tried to pin and unpin the programs to taskbar, but same.
I have no idea what to do to avoid this annoying behavior.
Do you have any idea about anything I could do?? (Besides than switching to Edge which doesn't have that behavior )
Thanks a lot in advance!

Hello everyone,I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I need to temporarily name my running programs icon in the taskbar. For example, I am running multiple notepads and I need to recognize what each running program icon in my taskbar represents. One notepad can be for this set of information while another notepad can be for another set of information. I don't want to save them to name them. I want to be able to temporarily tag or name them for this period of time while I am working. Another example, let us say that I have multiple Microsoft Excel files open where all the saved Excel files title have long titles. I need to be able to recognize which one I need quickly. The closest program I found that would do this is called 7+ Taskbar Numberer. It puts a 1, 2, 3 to infinity number on every running program in the taskbar on the top left of the icons. It is not customizable, so I cannot for example choose a group of running notepads to be tagged and number them 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 while another group I would number them 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3. I would prefer to have the option to name and number them, but whatever I can get is acceptable as long as it is customizable. This program is not customizable with its numbering system. One last example of what I am asking for if I am still not able to make it clear of my needs is for example the add-on for Firefox called TabRenamizer. This add-on allows the user to rename the title of the tab. I can go to google.com and on the tabs name by... Read more

We have multiple PCs and Laptops - with the same setup - Windows 7 with MS Office 2003.
On one of the PCs, we are having an issue.

Copy and paste does not work when attempting to copy from one application and paste in another application - e.g. copy from ms office to MS word.

However, copy and paste does work successfully when attempting to copy from within one application and paste in within the same application - e.g. within MS Word

Are there any settings that may have been inadvertently changed?  If not is there a fix for this issue.

I thought I had a very good idea, so I downloaded 'Avast' and ran it. I killed 65+ viruses/malware/spyware with 12 different names.Problem is the program gave me the option of repair / move to chest / rename / delete. So I tried repair. Most of the time it didn't work. Then I tried move to chest - debateable. Lastly I tried delete. This must be the most dangerous word in ComputerLand. I assumed (wrongly of course) that the program (Avast) would not allow me to delete key Windows components or maybe Windows XP would prevent it. I was hoping for some error message saying this file was important. No such safeguard, so I carried on deleting. I obviously wasn't thinking straight.I probably only deleted 5 files but it was enough, obviously, to give me major headaches.Problems:1. Cannot copy from one folder to another.2. I have been doing spreadsheets for years and suddenly my mind has gone blank.
Problem:
The values of 'A, B and C' are totalled in column 'D'
I insert a formula in 'D' and it totals A. B and C'
I then copy the formula in 'D' downwards and receive the message "Data on the clipboard is not the same shape and size as the selection, do you want to paste the data anyway"
My actual problem is more convoluted than above but has been shown to simplify the situation.
Reason???

Answer:Excel, Copy formulae and paste - Will not paste!!!

Update:
I tried to copy and paste on other tabs on the same spreadsheet with the same result I then opened a fresh spreadsheet and tried the copy and paste within in that - the same result. I looked on the web for others with the same problem and despite there being a fair number of posts relating to the problem there did not appear to be an answer.
However I shut down and then restarted Excel and lo and behold all is working as it has done for the past 20+ years!!
How?

Automatic Scandisk destroyed files on my main XP installation. All my applications are there but many of them do not run. Scandisk also destroyed all restore points.

I tried the "repair installation", but I have no SP3 disk, so all I get is WINDOWS.0, WINDOWS.1 directories on the disk. Another problem is that because that XP has been there a long time I dont know its serial number.

Another option is to copy files from a virtual machine copy of this XP installation. But the copy is old and I try avoid any big changes untill I am sure repair installation does not help.

So what should I do? Can someone give help to a difficult repair installation and after that, what files copy from virtual machine.

Some info about the problem machine (this machine):

I have 3 bootable disks in this machine. 2 XPs and a Win7. A 4th disk has these XPs as virtual machines, but those copies are a bit old.

It was XP I used to use most which broke. I tried to fix a couple of Microsoft updates with a script supposed to fix installation problems, from Microsoft, and MS "Fix it for you". Well, they did not fix what I thought they would. They fixed the problem that I had time to worry about some update problem. Now there are much bigger problems.

Answer:What to do: A difficult repair install or copy from a virtual machine

WINDOWS 0 and WINDOWS 1 are the partitions windows is installed on. Seems you have two version of Windows installed as mentioned.

For Windows XP determine which one by Megabytes.

Use the XP Recovery Console to repair Windows XP select WINDOWS 0 if this is XP and you installed that first on the first partition. To repair XP again use your Windows XP disk boot up with it select repair (Recovery Console) select Windows 0 enter admin password if any if no password just hit enter.

I just purchased a pre-owned Lenovo T420 laptop with Windows 7, but amazingly, over these many years, I've never had to back up my OS before because someone (my tech guy mostly) had always done it for me. Anyhow, while I do intend to make a full system backup copy, which I have no doubt will include the Windows 7 OS, I would also like to create a backup (disk) copy of my OS only since no install disks came with the computer. I can load the Windows 7 OS onto an 80Mb CD, but the entire hard disk backup will take many gigabytes and I intend to use a 32 Gb flash drive for that purpose.

My first and essential question is, can I create a Windows 7 Pro "restore" disk by just copying and pasting the entire "Windows" file on my hard drive to a CD or Flash drive...or is there more to it than that?

When I started to create a backup copy of the entire disk using the Windows backup program, I took particular notice to the
fact that (after I selected the custom selection option rather than the automatic selection for which files to copy) that the Windows file was no longer listed on the "C" drive menu provided in the backup program. It is certainly listed on my "C" drive when I bring it up directly, so can anyone explain to me quickly what that's all about?

Hello,
I have one internal drive with 1 TB.
The data there is very important to me , so I bought External removable drive for backup.
Now, I want to copy the data from one drive to the second drive but I have to be sure I have a perfect copy of the data.
The data is mostly songs movies and documents.
I'm using windows 7.

My question is this:

1.If I'll transfer the data through windows 7 by copy and paste, I could be sure i have a perfect copy?
2.There are tools for comparison Between the original data to the data that was copied?
If so, what are they?

If I do not in the right place please Please pass my message to the right place.thanks.

Answer:transfer data through windows 7 by copy and paste perfect copy?

There is no reason why using copy and paste won't give you a perfect copy and in my view it's more reliable than using the Windows backup utility.

One program I've found invaluable is Microsoft's SyncToy, which you can download here: Download: SyncToy 2.1 - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

It will sync files between folders of the same name on two separate drives or partitions ( I always use the Echo procedure).

You might also want to consider using Windows 7's Robocopy function.

Hello,

I've been having this problem for a while and I can really use some help now. When I try to copy & paste any files, folders, pictures, etc.. it will not work. Copy & paste to different folder or different screen, etc. An error message box will pop up saying - windows explorer has stop working then it disappears and a 2nd message box will pop up saying - windows explorer is restarting. Then shuts down the folder that's open. However I can " Cut and Paste or Drag a file to a different location" It just won't copy and paste.

Files that I'm trying to copy and paste are not anything special. It's all words, excel, power point, pictures, even folders etc...

It just won't copy and paste but again I can cut and paste.

Any ideas?

Thank you so much.

Hello and welcome to Seven Forums.

Go to your Start menu and type CMD, you will see at the top of the window CMD.exe.
Right click on it and left click Run as Administrator.
In the window that will open type the following and hit enter.
sfc /scannow

Let the system run and it will find any problems and repair them.
Re-boot and do it all again for either 3 times or until no issues are found.

Hi

I'm confused about the basics of 'recovery disks'. I have an A200, about two years old. What I want to do is 'clean' the hard drive, which means wiping everything off and re-installing windows. But I don't want to lose a few programs I have on the laptop (namely Photoshop and another called Corel Painter).

Is it possible to save these onto a recovery disk and then put them back on once I've cleaned the PC?

Something like this is not possible.
You can use it to have ?factory state? again and again, but some kind of modification or extension is not possible.

In addition, you might see if doing the items in the blue Note box under step 4 in Option Two in the same tutorial below may be able to help have SFC repair the files.

So as the title suggests my pc is using very little ram.

Here's a quick run down on whats been happening:
I upgraded my computer in July, mobo, CPU and kept my existing ram.

Had a number of issues, which turned out to be related to a faulty graphics card & EVGA software.

Ram usage was up to 7gb total used when playing flight sim x & prepar3d.

Purchased a another kit of 2 x 8gb Kingston ram which installed fine. With flight sims running max ram usage hit 11gb (fine coz I've got 16gb).

Then I needed to do a repair install of windows 7, but as I used my original OEM disc which didn't have service pack 1 on it, I entered my OEM key into the Microsoft website & download win 7 pro 64 bit sp1 COEM.

Burned to disc and ran the repair install and after the repair install my ram usage with flight sims running only hits about 5.5gb max.

I'm just curious to know what has caused this drop in ram usage.

All I can find on Google is help for people who are having the opposite effect and their pc is using too much memory.

Look forward to some answers.

Thanks.

I've attempted dozens of Repair Installations over the years, on hard drives that had failed for some reason. Most were successful, but sometimes the XP Installation disk simply refused to see the data from the previous installation, even though it was right there.

In those cases, I'd just run a New Install and that would be that.

This time, however, I'd really like to help a Repair Install happen, as the time and hassle involved in fixing this particular laptop is going to be huge if I don't get a Repair Install to successfully complete.

The customer ran a New Install from the Recovery Partition of Vista over the old O/S which was XP. She wants XP back, and doesn't like Vista. The new Vista install is "fresh", in fact there is a problem with the Vista PW that has prevented the new Vista installation from booting to desktop.

GetDataBack shows all the old XP data is recoverable on the hard drive. I'm tempted to just delete the Vista O/S data, recover the XP O/S data, and try to run a Repair Install, but there's a part of me that thinks I need to shepard this thing through better. Do something with the boot.ini file maybe? Boot record? Not sure.

Could it be this simple, or is there more to it?

Thanks in advance,

John

My Windows XP Pro SP2 would not start due to missing or corrupt boot.ini file:
<Windows root>\ system 32\ hal.dll (error message)

I tried to use the Recovery Console but kept getting a loop error where it'd say press 'r' to enter Rec Con. I'd press 'r', it'd act like it was about to enter RC, then pop up an error message about missing System32 files/.dlls and skip back to asking me to press 'r' to enter Rec Con and would reboot/restart and go through the same loop of error message, option to goto RC, and then if I chose "r", restarting.

I could get out of the loop only by quitting and going to the install page where it'd ask if I wanted to proceed with installing WinXP or goto Rec Con.

Since I couldn't get to RC, and couldn't do anything but sit in the loop, I opted to re-install hoping it'd fix the boot error while keeping my files intact just like it had done back when I upgraded from Win2k to XP.

I re-installed WinXP Pro from my original CD to repair the problem, then patched & upgraded back to WinXP SP2 so my WindowsXP Pro is back up to date (as of 11/12/07).

I did not make any hardware changes prior to the problem, and I believe the problem came from a free Registry Cleaner (which I *now* see your warning threads on) that I'd downloaded to try to fix a "Z Engine.msi" error I was having with my Ideazon Fang gaming pad that didn't uninstall properly.

Anyway, after re-installing and patching/upgrading to SP2, I ran AVAST!,... Read more

Answer:Help with repair-install & accessing previous files/folders/programs

Hi and welcome to TSF.
I'm afraid you won't be able to get programs installed under your old version to run as the registry has been reconstucted. You will need to reinstall them I'm afraid. As for your old ducments etc you can copy these to the new document areas.

Can I install Win10 over a non-booting, but legal copy of Win7, to retain the registered programs installed?
The disk does not boot, but the files are accessible. Perhaps booting and installing on the disc from a Win10 ISO? Assume that I have copied the old HD to a new one to negate the problem of a possible/probable bad sector in the boot or recovery areas.

Answer:Can I install Win10 over a non-booting copy of Win7, to retain the programs installed?

Nope, you need it bootable. Windows can upgrade only when setup us launched from a running Windows. If you boot from the media, you can only clean install.

I have an old laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit whose harddrive got randomly corrupted sectors. It was so bad that most backup software kept failing to perform a backup, even though it could read it (though it seemed specific areas of the drive were damaged, rather than the entire drive or just randomly failing).

Anyway, after weeks I recovered about 95-98% of the data and rebuilt drive and it's partitions on a new drive using another PC. Unfortunately, many of the damaged files were system files, including a great deal of System32.

Now, I am well aware the system would not be bootable in this state, I tried using a Windows Home Premium 64 install disk to run the recovery applications, but none of them are working.

Startup Recovery (not that I was expecting it to) was unable to fix it.

I tried booting into the command prompt and running "SFC /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=E:\ /OFFWINDIR=E:\Windows" (E being the partition on the HDD the recovery console mounts it as) but after a few minutes I get the message "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service".

Anything I attempted to Google expects you to be on the Windows desktop itself, not running off of the boot/install disk, to fix this or other issues.

I am running out of ideas. I know I can reinstall Windows using the "upgrade" option (possibly) but as I said, it's an old laptop, so I am trying hard to avoid having to just re-install Windows, and thus risk the c... Read more

Answer:Heavily corrupted Windows 7 install - running out of repair options

Unfortunately, I think you're SOL. When drives start to go bad, they tend to go downhill fast. There might be some tricks to get the drive into a readable state, like possibly putting it in the freezer overnight or things like that, but your chances of fully recovering it are slim.

hello,

first im not sure, if my thread is in the right area, i didnt find one, which fits better - please move, if its placed wrong here.

yesterday i created a new vista dvd with vLite, because my windows folder was too big. after that i tried to do a "repair/upgrade install", like explained in this tutorial - Repair Install For Vista
as it turned out, it went completly wrong. i reinstalled vista on C: and the old version was moved to the folder Windows.old. obviously not that, what i want to accomplish. so now im online with a new user account - "lost" the user settings from my old user account, the programs are not "installed" anymore.

here is a small comparison of my situation:
- on C: i got now a new fresh windows and the old version in the folder in Windows.old
- Windows.old contains:
-- my old user settings
-- my old programms installed on C: (not a big deal, because i installed almost all programms on E: ---> other problem, see below)
-- the old windows folder himself
- as mentioned above i installed almost all programms on E: - obviously they are still there, but they are not "installed" anymore

so here are my key questions:
1. is there an easy was to transfer my old user settings to the new one?
2. is there an easy was to "install" all the programms on E:, without reinstall all per hand? eg. about registry import or something like that...

i hope it is clear, what my problems are - english is not my native lan... Read more

Answer:tried to do a vista repair install - lost user settings, installed programs etc.

Hi there Tazz! Boy! thats a challenging fix that u r in!

Firstly, let me tell you that your decission to install programs on other drive *may* have saved you some of the trouble... Just try running their exes... Some programs just recreate their registry keys, but you will need to re-enter any serial nos. that the software requires.

Some s/w on the other hand *require other components* to be installed in order to run; like for example MS Visual C++ Redistributible. In this case, you can just download other components so that your programs can work.

Sorry, but unfortunately I will not be able to help you with anything else. Will post back If I dig up something else

Folks,

As my title indicates, I've got a few machines. They're all running nicely. (Well, except for the Surface, but that's just the way the surface is...).

I'm VERY interested in upgrading to Windows 10 when it is released, especially since MS states it'll be free. (I understand the benefit of a uniform user base, so MS wins if we all upgrade.) From what I hear, W10 should be an improvement over W7.

My question: with all my machines, the idea of clean installs and having to relicense and reinstall the huge number of 3rd party programs I have is daunting. In fact, I probably will not upgrade just to avoid that hassle.

Is there ANY way to perform an in-place OS upgrade? Meaning, all the installed programs stay installed?

Thanks.

Ken

Essentially, my install of Vista on my laptop has gone to hell. Windows Mobile Device Center is all screwed up, my wireless connection constantly says "Limited or No Connectivity" even though it is connected fully and works. I also get the occasional failed boot. I want to just do a repair install of the OS, but wanted to know a specific question. I have very important e-mails and such on the machine, if I simply do a repair install, will Outlook and all my other stuff still be the way I had it before the repair install?

Answer:Vista Ultimate all messed up...will repair install leave programs/files intact?

Yes, a windows repair install only messes with the core OS files, it does not tamper with your local profiles.

I'm running Win XP and I've just started having a strange problem. When I try to run certain programs (a chess game, an icon editing prog) or functions within a program (when I try and load an external script in a 3d graphics package) a window pops up saying that windows is preparing to install Microsoft Office or Roxio (both of these are programs I do have installed but I installed them months ago, long before this problem started happening). If I hit cancel the installation backs off then starts again. I have to hit cancel several times before it stops and the prog that I was trying to run opens up. If I let the 'installation' run it's course it tells me I need to insert the disk. Is it possible there are temporary install files that didn't get properly removed hiding somewhere and are being called inadvertantly?
Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks.

Hi, Everyone:This is a long one, but please read on...this sit is really odd. I'm also not an adv'd user, so I hope I can make myself understood.

Both IE and MSN browsers are acting funny. I believe the root problem lies in IE, since MSN browsers feed off of its settings. In an attempt to use a process of elimination, I tried to run a "repair" on IE. However, when I went to Add/Remove Programs, Internet Explorer is not on the list; thus, a repair option is not available. I have a zipped file sitting on my desktop ready for installation. I tried to run the newly downloaded file, but it picks up a "newer" version and refuses to finish installing.

The MSN tech group and Verizon have been unsuccessful in troubleshooting this. Both parties walked me through similar steps: deleting cache, temp files, offline web pages and history; and adjusting internet options and reseting defaults.

This is what the browsers do or fail to do: both browsers open to my set home pages just fine. The problem begins when I ask for a new window (by right clicking and making the selection) or click on a link that is programmed to open in its own window. The second window won't load. There are two types of windows that open. The first is the type that opens in its own window and mirrors the browser. The second one is the type that doesn't: it does not have drop down menus or buttons. The only options available are to minimize, restore, and exit.

There is a b... Read more

I am not sure if it is a bug, trojan, or etc.

I am running Vista Ultimate 64bit, I am having problems with the same message "Explorer has stopped running", and windows starts to search for a solution. It will even do this every minute or so with no programs running. Also, if you try to install a program, I get the same Explorer stopped running message, and the application will quit. I noticed it when it started with IPHelper had the issue, but I was able to get under control.

The vista sidebar will not open, and that closes up too with the same message.

Does anyone else has a similar situation, or a fix?

I posted a hijackthis log in the other thread, since I was not sure if this is a trojan or vista being a pain.

I tried to use the Search function, and it has been disabled for 2 days, at least on my end. I am looking for a tool to identify and determine how many running processes are necessary (currently, I run between 47-50), and how to stop the non-essential ones from running all the time, which makes my supposedly malware-free computer work slower than grass growing in December. Also, I can't figure out why certain programs, such as Microsoft Streets and Trips for example. It now asks for installation disks, when I never had one because it was already loaded when I bought the computer. It just doesn't make any sense anymore. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Excessive Running Processes, Some Programs Ask for Install Disk When I Never Had One!

47 to 50 is not bad. I have 45.

There is only a problem if legit or non legit processes are hogging your cpu. If they don't then stoping them won't speed up your pc.

Check your processes to see if any are using a high percentage of your cpu.

Hi all,

Please let me know which one takes long time. Cut+Copy+Paste or Copy+Paste?

Answer:copy paste vs cut paste

The only difference between cut+paste and copy+paste is that copy duplicates the file in a new location and stops, cut duplicates the file then deletes the original. So cut has one more operation which will take a little longer, but not significantly.

One exception is if you move (cut+paste) a file to a different location on the same drive partition, the file doesn't actually have to be copied, it can be left where it is and just the file directory changed so it shows in a different folder. This is much faster than copying the entire file. So moving within the same drive letter, copy+paste takes longer than cut+paste.

Ok, here's my trouble..I am running in safe mode, when I am in norm mode system locks up fairly quickly after I try to access any program especially IE. I have tried to download and install Stopzilla and get a message telling me system admin has policies set into place preventing install. I am running XP home on a HP pavillion. So I have a couple of issues going on. I have ran Spy-bot and AVG. Spy-bot is clean but I do have a txt. file for AVG showing alot of not tested files and also have ran hijackthis, which at my level of experience I can't interpet the data due to lack of knowlege. I did notice from reading another post that I need to change the program name for(hijackthis). Is it to late, do I need to uninstall and rename it when reinstalling?

As I mentioned before if you suspect malware is causing problems, then you need to read the link I gave you earlier .. this one

If you decide you want to follow those procedures then you need to remember to attach the 4 requested logs once completed to a NEW post in Malware Removal section and not here in this forum.

Question: copy and paste

Hi again, when I copy a document and try to paste it online for a translation, for some reason the paste does not highlight which will enable the translation to proceed? any help please.

Answer:copy and paste

It could be that what you have copied is formatted in a form that cannot be pasted into the online translation box.It should be in plain text, so first paste into notepad which will remove any formatting and then copy from the notepad text and then into the online translation box.If that works then it is the formatting of the original document that has been the problem.

Question: Copy And Paste

I am not sure if this is the prper place for this question. I am using XP home with SP2.
I have this problem with many applications. When I copy something rather than get the item I copy in the paste I get the entire screen.

For example, in excel if a copy a formula the paste will be the picture of the entire worksheet.

If a copy a paragraph from a website into an email I will get a picture of the entire webpage, rather than the paragraph.

I would apprciate any help on this problem.

My spyware, and virus protection are up todate and run daily.
thanks
