Services and Controller App - forced restart

Question: Services and Controller App - forced restart

Hi everyone.

Yesterday I started having problems with my laptop. Every time I restart my computer, I get an error from windows saying that the services and controller app must be shut down (services.exe). After I click out of that window it prompts a reboot in 1 minute.

When I click on the technical info on the error it says 2 files will be included in the report:

Both are in my temp folder so they're
temp\werd3fe.dir00\services.exe mdmp
temp\werd3fe.dir00\appcompat.txt

It then takes forever, maybe 10 minutes or more to reboot my computer. If I wait this out, the services and controller app won't crash right away, it'll be a few hours. If I manually reboot it will happen almost instantly.

Does anybody know what this problem could be? I'm running stinger right now and will post the results of what comes up. I can't install hijackthis because everytime I do, I get an error saying its infected with the W32/Generic.Worm (hopefully stinger will be able to get rid of this as well). I would really not like to reformat, however I do have an external HD so if need be I can back things up.

I have heard this could be a sasser virus or a variant, or that it could be something related to windows firewall, which I am not running. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Services and Controller App - forced restart

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Also, forgot to mention I'm using XP. Also when I boot in safe mode this does not happen.

Hi all,

I really need some help here. I have had this happen on my work laptop where I wasn't paying attention and let something through Zonealarm and the only fix anyone could think of was to restore Windows.

I recently went to broadband at home and was told that I didn't need Zonealarm because my router had a built-in firewall. I started having viruses pop up with Avast and other things started to happen and I tired cleaning them as best as I could and started Zonealarm back up. Now at random times XP forces a shutdown just like everyone else that has posted. I ran Torjanhunter and AVG last night and it found some more stuff but this looks like it is almost a custom job to figure out.

I could restore but it's such a pain considering all of the stuff on my hard drive so I am asking for help. I took the liberty of downloading and running Hijack this and here is the file:

Answer:forced to restart

I'm going to move you tentatively to the security forums for someone to look at your log. I see that you are running bit torrent, which can be a huge source of bad downloads I'd recommend ditching that.

As a side note, restarts can be caused by overheating, bad ram, weak power supply, among other things.

I was trying to get into my BIOS, but I missed the entry, so I forced a restart.

Afterwards, when I got into the BIOS and left, I accidentally caught myself into startup repair, but I didn't have patience. I unplugged the laptop and took out the battery. When I restarted, at first the systray icons looked funny. I restarted, and everything went to normal except Action Center forgot some of my preferences and it forgot my systray hide icon preferences. Also, my time got screwed up (which gave me a Windows Update scare), because I think the time in the BIOS was screwed.

I fixed those systray preferences. So far everything looks normal. What is the best thing to do with my computer? Should I do a restore to the last restore point, or should I just see how things go?

Nothing seems wrong at the moment.

For the past several months, I've been having an on-going problem with my PC hardlocking or force restarting while playing taxing games. (Watchdogs, Farcry3, etc,) Keyboard, headset and mouse lights will shut off. This doesn't happen during any other task, including MMO's (FFXIV, WildStar.) I never receive a BSOD or any sort of dump file that WhoCrashed can retrieve.

I recently upgraded to a GTX 760 from a GTX 470. That card had overheating issues and I assumed that this was the problem. That alone resolved BSOD issues regarding heat. I've tried a couple memory test programs such as Memtest86. I've tested the cards individually and rigorously. No errors from that. I've tried running the game on a different hard drive as well. Problem still persists.

CPU idles at 35c and reaches up to 60c under load. All fans are working and PC is dust free. Video drivers, etc are all up to date as well. Capacitors on motherboard seem intact and are not bulging.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, Ive recently been having this problem and would like some help please.

My computer immediately restarts whenever i try to watch any streaming video online, and when i try to download/upload any video.

Other than this, the computer appears to be working fine. (eg. I can run computer games, download programs and files, but just cant watch videos). I have an AMD sempron 2800 processor, and a Radeon 9600 graphics card.

Ive tried McAfee virus scans and AVG virus scan. I've also run Spybot S&D. All three programmes found problems, but 'fixed' them. I have also tried playing a streaming video with the computer case cover off, just incase it was a over-heating problem. No luck!! A little help please?...

Answer:Forced restart during streaming/uploading

Often missing or corrupted codecs can cause your issues.I would check the files you are trying to view to confirm you have the correct ones.
You should also run "dxdiag.exe" at the Run box to test your system.

Earlier this week I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, and over the past three days I have encountered the same vexing problem. It does not matter whether I am starting up from hibernation or a complete shutdown.
When my HP laptop starts up, it initially shows a blank screen with a light blue HP logo near the middle of the screen and a rotating series of dots at the screen's bottom. Then the screen goes completely black for perhaps 10 seconds, followed by a brief reappearance of the HP logo screen. Then it returns to a black, blank screen that persists until I lean on the power button to force my laptop to power down. I then count to 15 slowly before depressing the power button again. Only after all of these actions are taken will Windows finally start up.
Even on the successful restart, Windows 10 is still starting up noticeably slower than the previous Windows 8.1, so the claim that it starts faster is ringing hollow with me.
What could be causing this unusual behavior? More importantly, short of reverting back to Windows 8.1 then reinstalling the upgrade at a future time, is there anything I can do to correct whatever is hanging it up?

Answer:Windows 10 requies forced restart to boot up

Just a wild guess, were you able to update the graphic card/chipset drivers during the install or immediately following install? And there may be other drivers needed by Windows 10. Again, just my first wild guess.

Hi, hopefully you can help me. I'm thinking I may have a virus of some sort, but it could just be mass corruption instead. I am on windows 7 home premium. Here's the situation.
About a month ago, my hard drive seemed to be crashing. I leave it on at night so I can listen to music as I sleep. Sometimes, when I would wake up, I would be greeted with a black screen telling me to insert the right boot device. Restarting my computer always fixed this though and it did not occur often. Most times, I could leave my computer on all day without any issues if I wanted. So I just assumed my HDD was having some sort of occasional fault, and was not long for this world. As such, I have been saving up for a new HDD.
Last week, I started noticing slow downs and decided it was time to clean up my old programs. I was uninstalling some old printer drivers when the uninstaller froze. I ran my computer through a Avast! anti-viris scan, which picked up nothing. So again, I thought it was just HDD issues.
Last night, I was playing ARK (a game on steam) with a friend and kept noticing lockups that would occur for a few seconds at a time at random. These lockups always seemed to resolve themselves, so I figured it could just be server lag from his end or my computer having a hard time with the game. But this morning it was worse. My browser was freezing up my whole computer for a bit longer and more often.
Deciding to see if it was my browser (which does have some script blocker apps on it) or my co... Read more

When display switches off due to low battery power & I can't get it back even when I plug in to the mains and have to force the PC to restart.
Is there a pref somewhere to disable this?

Answer:When display switches off I can't get it back without forced restart

Hello

When the display goes off exactly? How much capacity has battery at this time? 5%? More?
Try to set this to higher level.
When you work with your notebook and battery level comes to low battery level and the alarm alert will be shown in task bar but you will be able to continue your work several minutes or to connect AC power supply.

I am afraid your notebook reaches critical battery level and then is maybe too late for any action.
Set Low battery level to 10% and when the notification is shown connect AC adapter immediately.
I presume the display must not be off at all.

Yesterday i was on Facebook for the first time and i came across a video and tried to play it. I was then told i didnt have the latest Flash Player 9 installed. I clicked on the link to install it and it installed no worries. All of a sudden, shortly after, all the windows/programs i had open started closing down by themselves (as if i had clicked on restart or shut down) and the computer restarted itself. I read later in the system "event viewer" that:

The Windows Installer initiated a system restart to complete or continue the configuration of 'Adobe Flash Player 9 ActiveX'..

Anyway, after the restart had been performed, i realised that my screen resolution had changed. I opened Display properties to change it back to the previous setting (1440x900) but that resolution wasnt available.

What i would like to know is has anyone else experienced this problem and is there any way of creating a custom screen resolution?

My graphics card is ATI Radeon 9250 128mb
My monitor is Acer AL1916W (widescreen)
My OS is Windows XP Home SP2

Answer:System Freezes Often, Forced To Restart PC Each Time

Update: I received and installed two replacement memory sticks a few hours ago.
In the obviously limited time that they've been installed, (with numerous active processes being used) the system-freeze issue has not come up, fortunately.

However, I don't know if the new ram will ultimately resolve the issue, only time will tell, and I'll post back if that's the case.

I was still hoping that someone could provide any feedback to a HJT scan of my system...

Hello everyone,

I have a 5 months old Asus ux32vd. Here's the problem: this morning I found the laptop extermely hot and unresponsive after resuming from sleep. Forced restart with power button resulted in a 15-min boot and normal work for the next hours. Until the lid was closed. After resuming from sleep on the next occasion, Win8 froze (became unresponsive with no error message) in a few minurtes. Restart with power button -> looooong boot -> normal work again. No mini-dump files created. Event viewer mentions Bluetooth-related issues (see attachement for the log file and screenshot of Device Manager). I am not using any Bluetooth devices, only wireless combo (the only usb port used on the regular basis). "Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network)" in Device Manager was disable the whole time (it's enabled on the screenshot).

I tried standard Windows Startup tools - debugging and automatic repair - no result. I didn't do the hardware test yet. If the event file makes any sense to you, please, let me know. Any suggestions are highly appreciated. OS: Windows 8 64-bit, version 6.2.9200.

A couple days ago the HP Support Assistant popped up a message that a restart was required with options to do it now or do it later.  I said "later" so I could open the support assistant to see why.  Well, trying to start the assistant just caused the popup to pop up again.  So I restarted the PC and then started the assistant again.  There is nothing reported there that has been done or needs to be done.  The reason for the restart seems a complete mystery. Any suggestions about why this happened? Curiously,Larry Support Assistant v 8.4.14.41

My Toshiba notebook is less than a couple of days out of the box and on its first day the screen went blank with various lights still luminated but it forced me to switch it off and restart it to boot up. It has happened a couple of times today as well with the message saying "system not responding or system was shut down to protect data".

I noted there have been some threads about overheating, bios and vista bugs. I am going to update all the device drivers tonight and the bios and see if that cures it. I am not sure if there is any way to check it is overheating or indeed if it is Vista bugs?

I will let you know how I get on but if anyone has any inspiring thoughts on the issues please let me know.

Answer:Forced System Shutdown and Restart- HijackThis Log included

Just in case it makes a difference i ran the HijackThis scan while my computer was in Safe Mode seeing as it will shut down when i start it normally. I log in and i get pop-ups with messages of components such as services.exe and windows explorer that couldn't start successfully and when i click on the "debug", "send error report", or "don't send" options the window will come back with a 1:00 countdown to shutdown.

I've spent a good amount of time trying to solve this problem, but unfortunately to no avail. Here's to hoping you wonderful people can help me out!

The issue is that, when I play certain games, they just absolutely freak out and crash. What'll happen is that I'll be playing, and suddenly everything on the screen will stretch and distort, while the sound makes that really loud stuttering that I can only assume is a sound being repeated over and over again. The game crashes, and when I get back o the desktop, Steam is messed up. If I have a chatbox open, all the test flashes green and pink, and the main store page is all messed up, with everything out of place and flashing. I usually can't open other programs, as they crash when I try. The only way to fix it is restarting my computer, and it goes back to normal.

The odd thing about this is the lack of consistency of this error. It can happen immediately, or an hour into playing. The issue happens extremely rarely in Skyrim (Graphics maxed), but I got it frequently when playing Terraria full-screen in multiplayer. Just to be safe, however, I'll list the games that I can remember having this issue with, and how frequently it would cause it to crash.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2: even at lowest settings, I can't get through a single multiplayer map without it crashing.

Warhammer 40k: Space Marine: Varying lengths of time it takes to crash.

Just Cause 2: VERY inconsistent. Sometimes over a... Read more

Answer:Graphics freak out when playing certain games, forced to restart computer

Hi and welcome to TSG.

My first thoughts based on your description is it sounds like a possible failing GPU.

A few questions to start off with:

1) What is the exact make, model, wattage and approximate age of your power supply (PSU)? Your voltages look OK in Speccy but it could be a problem when its under load.

2) What software are you using to monitor temps etc (I assume Speccy as you posted a report, but just checking)?

Your not quite up to date on the GPU drivers, there were a new set released about 2 weeks ago (v353.62, your running v353.30 according to Speccy) , however I don't think that is the problem, worth trying though.

Do you have access to any known working GPU you can swap out to test with? It doesn't have to be a gaming card, just something you can use that will at least start the games up and run them, even at low settings?

Hello Everyone

Recently my HDD was replaced in my pc due to it was faulty (couldn't boot).
I got a new one and redownloaded my games, but now i have a decrease in FPS in most games and the newer ones (Rome 2, AC4 etc.) have large FPS drops and crashes to a black screen with flickering sound after a few minutes. This forces me to restart my pc manually. I initailly thought it was due to overheating, and i cleaned my computer, which cured some of the FPS drops, but the games still crash after a few minutes.
Does anybody know why this happens?
I have attached a zip folder containing the results from: DxDiag and MSINFO32.

Any help would be appritiatied, thanks!

My Dad was using one of my 64 bit PCs when a program froze up and he decided to force restart the computer (Pro move, I know). Now I restart and am unable to get to the login screen. Using both safe mode and normal mode gives me the same result. After I choose one of those options, I see the "Windows is starting" message and the icon. However, before I can get to the login screen the screen goes black and all I can see is the curser in the middle of the screen. I would like to be able to get to the login screen so I can access my computer. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated as a lot of my work material is on this machine.

My computer (an HP 6305 Pro) has given me two BSOD's reading "Your PC has encountered a problem and needs to restart", followed by a forced restart. It also froze up once, which I believe may be related to the same error. The DMP files after both of the two crashes declared to the problem to be error 0x00000124, specified hal.dll, and also always implicated Opera browser. For more information, you can read this thread that I've posted about it at TenForums: "Your PC encountered a problem and needs to restart." - Round 2. - TenForums I've run a battery of tests on my hardware (MemTest86, Prime95, Furmark, Western Digital Data Lifeguard, CHKDSK, Scannow, etc), all without incident or error. I find it hard to believe at this point that the problem is purely hardware-related. I have received suggestions that I update my BIOS (as an outdated BIOS apparently might be the source of the problem), but I'm afraid to do this, as I'm afraid that it runs the risk of messing up my system to the point of making my computer unbootable. That said, now that this error has struck again, I believe that it is in my best interests to gather more information about updating my BIOS, and perhaps go through with an update if the information that I receive indicates that it would be most prudent to do so, and I also receive satisfactory information on how to update my BIOS safely. As far as I can tell, this is the correct installer to use to update my BIOS (please correct me if... Hello 1. Don't believe BIOS is problem. 2. You can update BIOS but don't believe this action will solve problem. 3. There are two different 6305 Pro models. Here is the detail on BIOS update for one of them. It is a security update. So I don't think this update will fix problem. Also looked at other PC option using HP 6305 Pro and found BIOS update for security only. If Opera is indicated when BSOD occurs I suggest you remove browser from PC and use a different browser. See what happens. Don't think a BIOS update will fix your problem. It seems to be software related. 4. Some HP PC's have BIOS recovery option, your PC may not. Grzy

As the title states. Just recently my monitor has been going into power save mode while playing certain games. Not all games but some games. Which I am trying to figure out what the problem is before I take it to the shop. If i can somehow fix this issue myself that would be great. Since I really can not afford to buy a new system right now but will consider it if that is the case.

Before we get started I would like you to know the things that I have already done and still couldn't find a way to fix it. I do not think it's an over heating issue since I have ran programs to test my GPU temp and it seems fine. I tried the FurMark program and it shows that the temp is around 65 degrees. Which I was told that anything under 90 degrees is fine. I cleaned out the case so there is no dust in there anymore as well. I checked for any viruses and my pc is clean of any viruses. Lastly, I have also went into the power options menu and switch to high performance and changed the settings to Never on both sleep mode and turn off display but I still get that power save mode problem.

This problem just recently happened as well after I put in a new keyboard and mouse about a week ago. Not exactly sure if that caused anything though. I doubt it but could be. For the most part my system runs fine but just some games I play goes into power save mode and I am forced to restart my pc. Other times it automatically restarts my pc. I saw that it could be a dead battery on the motherboard that ne... Read more

Answer:Monitor goes into power save mode while playing games. Forced restart.

I had something similar happen while watching movies and it turned out to be a screen saver issue.

As part of my trouble shooting, I set the Power Options to never dim or turn off the display but the problem remained. Eventually I traced it to my screen saver which was enabled but set to "none" so the screen just went blank at the time-out I had in my SS.

Does it happen after a specific period of time or is it random? If it is the SS, the problem will occur at the time you've set in the SS. The clock starts after you last touch the keyboard.

It may be happening only during games because you're using a controller and not touching the keyboard. And it may happen only on some games and not others because of the way the game communicates with the computer; some games may disable the SS or periodically make a keyboard entry every minute or so.

Disable the screen-saver or set the time out at 60 minutes and see what happens.

A few days ago my pc started acting funny, at the time I was using Sunbelt Vipre Antivirus Premium, and it detected nothing during it's nightly deep scans I ran on schedule. It started with my pc randomly freezing and rebooting, then I started getting errors saying "Windows must now restart because the DCOM Server Process Launcher Service terminated unexpectedly". I ignored the first instance of that, as it did not happen again until a day or two later, then again in less time in between than the first two, then it would be a few times a day. I've since done a clean reformat of my C drive and fresh install of Windows 7 x64. It's been 2 days since the reformat, and I've been slow to re-install programs and games. I've only installed things I know are from trusted companies and developers, nothing fishy.

Yesterday, I was in the middle of a gaming session when my pc went black, started the shut down process and acted as if it was installing windows updates during the shutdown, only it was saying something about updating registry entries etc etc. Restarted just fine, logged in and hopped back into the gaming session. A few hours later, I got the same DCOM Server error as before, and have since had 3 other instances of it, one of which nothing was open or running on the pc aside from the standard background processes.

I will post logs from both HJT and DDS, appreciate the help when someone can get to it, know you guys (gals) are busy. Thanks!

Answer:DCOM Server Process Launcher terminated unexpectedly. Forced Restart, logs included.

First off sorry for the long double post here, just attempting to get as much information out from the get go to get a bigger jump on the fix (hopefully), as I'll be at work a lot the next few days and won't have much time to tinker with programs or even check this forum for replies or to answer questions.

I've got an update with a bit more information. I noticed that moments before I get the error, my HDD starts scanning like crazy (being loud, I assume like it's searching for files etc..), when I heard this the most recent time, I opened task manager and found that one of the svchost.exe processes was running at over 1 million k, moments later I got the error. Now that may not be significant, but in my past experiences I've not ever seen them go over 300k really. I attempted to capture a screen shot and save it as a .jpeg before it shut down, but was unable to. I did capture one immediately upon restarting my pc, and noticed one of the svchosts.exe usage shot up significantly and then slowed. I'll post a screen shot of the details of that particular one, and will continue to monitor that specific process from time to time. Again, not sure if it's related, or even if the process I have highlighted is the same one that was over 1 mil just before the error.

EDIT: From the time I snapped this screen shot, which was moments before posting this reply, to the time I had posted it, give or take 5-8 minutes. That same svchost.exe has gone form ... Read more

At this time, the only problem I see is that when starting my account, a "Data Execution Prevention" box comes up. Name: "Services and Controller app", Publisher: Microsoft Corporation. If I close it, it reappears, if I close it a second time, it appears to be done.

This started when a file in windows/sa23sl.exe was trying to access the internet, when I blocked it, the computer would start a timer and then shutdown.

In safe mode, I deleted this file. Then I ran full scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (though the database was a little outdated 8/1/09). It found a bunch of viruses that I deleted. I then updated the database and ran a quick scan, for which it found one virus (I removed that as well).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Every time I have had that serious an infestation to fix, even with heroic measures to remove the viruses and malware, I ended up doing a nuke and reload. I sometimes get by with a repair install for a while until I locate all the stuff needed and update the file backups. Odd errors and inexplicable command line failures can sometimes be fixed with ccleaner.

Start thinking about the state of your backups and the disks and serial numbers needed to do a complete reinstall.

The moderators will decide if you need to be moved to a malware fix thread.

Good luck

The alcra worm is especially bad and hard to be sure all the stuff it might have downloaded is cleaned up. It also shares your directories in limewire so make sure that is blocked right away.

Hi all,
Hoping someone recognises the symptoms below.

I am getting the error -

"Services and Controller app encountered a problem and needed to close"

on clicking on the 'more info' button I get -

Error signature
szAppName : services.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.2180 szModName : esent.dll
szModVer : 2.1.2600.2780 offset : 0001baec

When I click on cancel a message tells me
"the system will reboot in 60 seconds please save any open files"

Virus and spyware scans are negative.
I have checked Mcafee, Symantec and CA virus info pages and there is no listing of this description, however there is also no listing of this message on Microsoft (no surprise)

Anyone have any ideas?

Gary

This morning upon first turning on my computer, I received an error message which said:

"Services and Controller App has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for this inconvenience.

It then went on to ask if I wanted to report the error to Microsoft. I said yes and an Error Report was transmitted.

I then totally shutdown and did a fresh start. Everything as been working normally all day and there have not been any other problems. Nothing seems to have been affected by the error, but I am worried that something might be wrong internally that will rear its ugly head again later.

I have searched MSKB for information regarding this error message and have not been able to find anything. Does anyone know exactly what happened, why it happened, and/or should I be concerned about it? Is this any sort of a serious issue? I have never heard of "Services and Controller App" and don't know if this is something critical or not.

I am running XP PRO and OFFICE XP on a system custom built by PC Club. Thank you very much for any and all help offered.

Okay. To start, about 2 weeks ago, I got a couple of trojans. I bring this up only because it may have something to do with this.

I'm not what anyone could call good with computers, so instead of trying to remove the viruses, in fear for the future use of my computer (After a virus scare a year previous) I just performed a System Recovery without trying to remove the virus.

Things had been mostly okay since then. Until today when out of the blue, the following window pops up.

"Data Execution Prevention - Microsoft Windows
Name: Services and Controller app
Publisher: Microsoft Corporation
(close message button, clicking it tends to open another of the same or start the shutdown button, I've been afraid to click it)
Data Execution Prevention helps protect against damage from viruses and other security threats. What should I do?"

Longer story sorta short, after a minute of trying to get the "what should I do" window to even open, a message pops up telling me my computer is gonna shut down in 60 seconds and that I can't prevent it. It happened again once after I restarted. Says something about having Authority/system or something like it. So far, after the second restart, then after my restarting my computer to run Hijack This, it's not shut down on me (wait, there was a random hiccup shutdown with no warning in between) but the DEP window keeps popping up. I don't know what to do.

(So sorry if this is too much info, trying to inc... Read more

Unless there really is something in my log, I think I may have just overloaded my computer. Even after everything yesterday, I finished installing my printer, which involved a restart, and the message came up again, but this time, no shutdown. After being powered down for 12 hours, and turning it on today, I didn't even get the DEP message.

If there is something in my logs, I'd appreciate it if something was said, but otherwise, I think it might be okay. Thank you though ^^

Hey people... A few hours ago I shut down my computer during a bad storm... And my computer had been having problems turning on recently (I think something with the power supply?) but that's another problem entirely... Because I could eventually get it to work.

But this time after I managed to get the computer on and load onto my account...
I get the something went wrong with this, report or don't report error window thing for the "Services and Controller app" or services.exe .....

Then whatever I choose, or if I don't choose, it'll eventually give me a sort of window that says I have 1 minute to quit and save programs before windows shuts down, and gives me the 1 minute countdown.... And turns me off....

This happened out of the blue... Not sure what I could have done to cause this problem, and definately no idea how to fix this...

When that window doesn't pop up, after a few minutes of being logged in will result in sending me to a blue screen telling me windows shut down to protect itself or whatever it was....

Any help on what I can do? I'm running in safe mode right now, that seems to work... Sad thing is I need to use my computer within 2 hours at the latest to do something...

If all else fails at least tell me how to use my printer while in safe mode?

I would prefer a fix though, thanks.

I get periodic errors in "Services and Controller App" in WinXP Pro on at least two (potentially 6) computers.These computers were recently "disjoined" from a domain at work in preparation for a move and the IT folks installed AVG antivirus after uninstalling symantec.when you click on the don't send to microsoft, the computer starts a 60 second countdown and reboots.C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgupsvc.exeC:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgemc.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Analog Devices\SoundMAX\SMAgent.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exeC:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exeR1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet ... Answer:Services And Controller App Crash

I have unpacked one of my computers affected by this problem (as these were physically moved a couple thousand miles), uninstalled AVG (as that probably ties into services and controllers app), and I'm still getting the crash error as described above.

I've noticed that google toolbar is installed, whereas previously it was not. That would seem to be unrelated though, right?

Would anyone care to diagnose my HJT log?

Note that I currently can't re-run HJT on the computers right now as I have no internet/intranet connection at present on these computers.

Hello folks. I am a new member to this forum (I just recently discovered it) and will likely be a large contributor in the future. I have a knack for fixing electronics - save for computers. My assistance to others will likely come on that front.

I inherited a laptop at work after I swapped to a new department. I have full administrative access on the laptop and an open portal to the internet. Any diagnostic tools I can acquire and run. The laptop is a Dell Latitude D520 running Windows XP sp 2 (it is ancient - I know).

I have used HJT before so someone else could help diagnose my problem, and I know that is what is going to be asked of me here. I will attach the log file from HJT to the bottom of this thread to expedite help.

As an FYI, I have manually gone through and deleted all the crap my previous position owner had put on the desktop (P2P like emule and utorrent). I have also ran Malwarebytes on the computer in safe mode but the problem is still persisting. Malwarebytes found nothing in its full system scan (which has been performed on 3 separate occasions).

Thank you all VERY much for your help.

Each time I boot I get a Data Execution Prevention error and windows says it is closing the Services and Controller app, when I close the message, system shuts down in 60 seconds. I was unable to use my computer for more than 1 min and McAfee kept asking if I wanted to allow sandboxie to connect to essledv.exe. I was also unable to run McAfee, it failed to initiate scan (keep in mind this was all happening within 60 seconds of logging on) I booted in safe mode and removed essledv.exe from startup. I was then able to boot up normally and run McAfee. McAfee found no files infected. Shortly after the scan was completed, I recieved the Services and Controll app error message (same as before) and when I closed it, 60 second shutdown initiated. I found a similiar topic here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/193268/services-controllers-causing-60sec-shutdown/and ran malwarebytes' anti malware before I closed the error message and it found 21 files infected. I selected all to remove and it told me to shut down to clean. When i tried to reboot, it wouldn't start, just a blank screen with a blinking underscore. I had to shut down using the power button and reboot. I finnaly rebooted and I just recieved the same error. I have the log file from the malwarebytes'anti malware. I'm not sure what else I need to do. It identfied the essledv.exe and several other trojans, all the files are sitting in quarantine right now. Hi, I have a funny error which keeps restarting the computer after an hour or so. It talks about the Services and Controller app, and the technical details are:
C:\DOCUME~1\Tony\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER6637.dir00\services.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Tony\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER6637.dir00\appcompat.txt

Answer:XP Services and Controller app problem

Go here and click the green icon to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4.

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in less than 30 seconds, a log file will appear.

Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

I just installed (Win2000) SP3. At the start of my first on-line session the "Services and Controller App" had to be re-authorized in ZA as the version had changed. Then, a couple of minutes later it requested authorization as a server. I cannot remember it ever wanting to be a server before. Did I miss something in the past, or is this something new ?

Hello all,

So, I have a computer here that has the "Services and Controller app has encountered a problem and needs to close" problem and then it starts a countdown to shutdown.

On the error signature, I have...

szAppName: services.exe
szAppVer: 5.1.2600.3520
szModName: essent.dll
szModVer: 5.1.2600.2780
offset: 0001baf2

The error message appears at least once a day

I scanned the computer with TrendMicro and Malwarebytes, but I can't seem to find anything there. Could someone take a look at this log and help?

Please and thank you!

I have another computer that gets an error "Services and Controller App encounterd a problem and needs to close". When I click on "Don't send report" another window comes up with a error that services.exe generated a status code of 1073741819 and the shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. Then there is a countdown that the system will shut down in xx seconds.

I thought the problem might be with the ntos.exe command but I could not locate the file in the System32 directory. Only the ntoskrnl.exe file.

Have you seen this, can you tell me how to fix this??

MG,
I am posting a thread in the software forum similar to one posted (by me) in the malware forum at the request of the supporter. Here is the score: I have already taken the steps to become malware free and by all accounts have made it. My problem must now be software/hardware related.

At least once per day, I get the famed Services and Controller App Error. I can almost set my watch to it. It happens 4 hours from the time that I power up in the morning. Then again in the afternoon which is slightly more random (or at least I see no pattern). All of this is followed by the 1 minute shut warning (NT Authority). I often interrupt the shut down with a DOS shutdown /a command so that I can finish my work. When I do finally get around to the formal shut down, the machine never completly goes down. I have to do a power down in order for the reboot.

The other curiosity that happens is that my AV software stops and I get a Windows Security Alert at the same time the Services error appears. Naturally, I would want to remedy this as soon as practical. Hence the need to do a reboot.

Is this condition viral? It has been doing this ever since I change the machine from a Domain controller to a Workgroup. Any connection here?

Please Please help if you can. I am quite capable with the PC environment and there is nothing that I wont try short of a complete format.

Thank you.

Domluc,
Thank you for your swift response. I am including two entries from the Event Viewer log(s). While the Systems log was rather uneventful, the Applications log had some good information. I was able to see a pattern of what is happening just before the incidence (subject topic) occurs. First the earliest warning closest to incidence. From the system log:

From the application log (same timing).

MG,
I fear that I may have whacked out my PC when I changed from a domain controller to a workgroup. This may not have anything to do with my PC problems, however I need to put that out there. I should have researched the topic a bit more. Before I did this, I had a happily running PC. Now, not so happy.

The Problem:
As with other threads, I get about two hours of running before I get the titled error followed mostly by a 1 minute shut-down warning. Followed by a offer to send a report. This mostly happens during periods of inactivity. The window offers me a "debug" report which states the following"

Error Signature:
szAppName: Services.exe
szAppVer: 5.1.2600.2180
szModName: esent.dll
szModVer: 5.1.2600.2780

Error report <included in attached "major geeks.txt">

To date:
I have executed the 4 steps program for cleaning my XP (Pro) system. All of the programs ran and performed their task to my satisfaction. (Files included).

Now what:
My problem still exists. Perhpas this is not a maleware problem after all. I will look to you experts for any suggestions. Please help if you can as I have been wrestling this demon for several days now.

Why am I not seeing any anti-virus software on this system?

Unless you are working in a domain, if you are no in a network...changing to a workgroup should make no difference.

I am not seeing anything so far, but you still need to attach the logs from:

After about ten minutes of being online, Firefox refuses to load any new sites. I have to restart the machine to get web access again. Right after restarting, Sygate window popped up saying the Services and Controller app has changed since last use, would I like to let it access the network? Both times I said no.

I'm running Windows XP home edition SP2. Any clues from the HTLog? Thank you...

Not sure what else to do...i haven't done anything with HijackThis as yet other than scan and save the log for fear of being a complete noob. If it makes any difference, please note that the error always occurs at system start up and forces a system shutdown in variable time afterwards. This is the first longest and successful attempt i've had at making a post so without further ado :

i'm hoping this is the right place to post this... i just set-up a dell running xp, service pack 2. i keep getting a dialog box that says 'services and controller app has encountered a problem and needs to close...' If I click on anything (send report, don't send), the box goes away and another comes up saying it will reboot the PC in 1 minute. Then the PC reboots and it all starts again. If I don't click on the original dialog box, everything continues to work okay. Is this a virus? How can I fix this? Thanks.

Every time I am forced to restart my PC using the "Restart" case button because of some lock up, I always run "chkdsk C: /F", followed by a restart to start the process, and then boot into Windows and run System File Check.

Is doing that after reach improper/forced restart a good idea or just OCD? I simply do not want SSD errors or file system errors that may have occurred due to forced restart.

Answer:Running "chkdsk C: /F" and System File Check after forced restart - good idea or OCD?

I'd say these days it's a little on the OCD side, but that's not always a bad thing. Then again I rarely have to do a force restart via the power button and if that's happening a lot it might be a bigger issue. If it isn't often then I say you're fine doing what you're doing. Windows is far more resilient than ever before and if you're on the real paranoid side I'd recommend weekly clones on a separate hard drive at the very least to ease the burden.

It's breathtaking how much relief you get once you are forced to use a backup and know it'll actually work. Takes away a lot of these little stresses.

Myself, along with a couple of other people on this forum have been experiencing the exact same problem. I also found some other people on other virus help forums who have the same problem as well. This new ?virus? seems to be spreading, and no one seems to know what to do about it. It just started during the beginning of April.

The main problem is that my computer just keeps randomly freezing. It can happen every 10 - 15 minutes or even up to an hour. The computer just freezes and you can?t do anything except for seeing your mouse move around. Ctrl alt delete does nothing at all either. It just locks up and you are forced to manually turn off the computer and restart it. It is extremely frustrating. It all started during the beginning of April where my computer restarted on its own, then it just started freezing up.

I ran several anti virus programs, spy ware removal programs, and an AVG scan and could find nothing of any relevance. I even had a technician come to my house and he couldn?t find anything. He thinks that it?s the memory or ram, but I highly doubt that, my laptop is only like 2 years old.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is a new virus I believe and it is driving me insane, thank you!

I have ran a Malware Antimalware Bites scan, AVG, Ad Aware, Spybot, and SUPERAntiSpyware scans, all found nothing.

Hello,

I have an error pop-up when i load my laptop in normal mode, the error comes up at startup:
"Services and controller app has encountered a problem and need to close, sorry for the inconvenience"
Then after few moments (from seconds to couple minutes) the computer freezes and i have to hard reset it.

I am now in safe mode, i have tried the following:
-Disable all my startup list in msconfig
-Disable everything that isn't from Microsoft Corporation and McAfee in my services list in msconfig

I verified my add/remove list, nothing weird or suspicious there.

The laptop is fairly new, a month and a half old. No junk installed on it yet.

If you know what causes this error please give me advice, and let me know what info you need about the computer to be able to help me.

Thank you!
Douja

Answer:"services And Controller App" Error At Startup!

Hi Red_Scorpion.Disable everything that isn't from Microsoft Corporation and McAfeeI wouldn't count out anything McAfee as an issue either. If after you've disabled it and still have the problem, take a look in your event log for clues or post the contents back here. If you need to, see: How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XPBTW, when you get the "Services and controller app has encountered a problem and need to close" error, do you see an application or file listed in front of it?

I booted my computer (Vista Home Premium 32-bit) last night and got an error message a few minutes after the desktop loaded stating that "Services and Controller app has stopped working". I wasn't aware of what this was, and had been getting a few messages similar to this about other programs recently, so I closed it and carried on. However I then got a messaged stating something along the lines of 'Windows has encountered a serious incident and will reboot in one minute'. It's true to its word and gives me only a minute to try and work out what's wrong. I've discovered that the error only occurs when I'm connect to the internet, so I've disabled my Wireless Adapter. I've Googled this issue and read several forums on the matter and it seems to be relatively common. What also seems to be common is that the only answer is to reformat the computer altogether. Another interesting turn of events is that Windows is now telling me I have 3 days to activate my copy of Windows as 'the product key I have entered is incorrect'. Furthermore, I ran AVG this morning and it detected a supposedly malicious program called 'desktoplayer.exe' that has now been 'disinfected', but whether this is related or not I don't know. I'm yet to reboot to see if this has affected anything. If anyone could shed some light on this I would be very grateful.

Answer:Controller And Services App Has Encountered An Error...

Hello wyrdmage and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I don't see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.Let's try a different scanner and see what it shows us. Download WinPFind3u.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind3u on your desktop.Note: You must be logged on to the system with an account that has Administrator privileges to run this program.Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind3U.exe to start the program. In the Driver Services group select Non-Microsoft.Do not change any other settings. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.Let it run unhindered until it finishes. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.Use the Add Reply button and Copy/Paste the information back here. I will review it when it comes in. If, after posting, the last line is not < End of Report > then the log is too big to fit into a single post and you will need to split it into multiple posts.Cheers.OT

I have an intermittent problem where just after startup the Services and Controller App will crash, requiring the system to be restarted.
This crash loop will continue randomly until stopping for some unknown reason, occasionally with Trend Micro IS saying that due to an error it has reverted to a previous version.

Any help you can provide will be appreciated. Sorry that I cannot give much in the way of info, but I dont have a clue as to what could possibly be causing this problem

Answer:Services And Controller App Crashes On Startup

Try uninstalling your Trend Micro Internet Security program (ensure that you have the product key before doing this. Then install a version that's freshly downloaded from the Trend Micro website. This should fix the issue. If it persists, then you'll have to use the Trend tool by following these directions: http://esupport.trendmicro.com/support/vie...36064#P106_1882

How can I fix this problem?

My daughter ran into a problem late last evening where her Dell Inspiron 1520 (running XP 2002 SP3) where a flag popped up with the message: The Services and Controller App has encountered a problem" and must close down. The accompanying error message referenced sz App Name services.exe sz AppVer: 5.1.2600.5755 offset 000097b8, and then further referenced two other files: \temp\WER8f42.dir00\services.exe.mdmp, and \WER8f42.dir00\appcomp.txt.

Before I got into the act, my daughter Googled the problem, visited a Microsoft help file (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316434) that suggested that the problem might be unsigned digital signatures for drivers, and we ran Start\Run\sigverif a couple of times to make the list of unsigned driver signatures apparently go away.

When I logged back onto her laptop, however, I got same pop-up error message, and the computer shut down again. I again logged on using safe prompt, and ran a virus scan on her laptop, and found no issues.

When we were encountering this 'Services and Controller App' problem, the laptop slowwwwwed to a crawl, taking me a couple of minutes at least to even open up the control panel. But when I went to Task Manager, there was nothing consuming more than 25000K of memory.

I tried to check her disk for errors from Windows Explorer (C:\properties\tools\error-checking), but the system would not give me access to the hard dri... Read more

Do you (not your daughter) have a genuine Microsoft XP install CD?<<The accompanying error message referenced sz App Name services.exe sz AppVer: 5.1.2600.5755...>>Info worth knowing: http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/services.exe.htmlIf your services.exe file is located in the System32 folder of Windows and is 108KB...then it matches mine (and probably is valid).Which would say to me that your system is probably in need of a replacement file, due to damage.Since the system won't boot into Windows...my only technique for such replacement would be a repair install, using a MS XP CD.<<...and then further referenced two other files: \temp\WER8f42.dir00\services.exe.mdmp, and \WER8f42.dir00\appcomp.txt.>>The references to the two temporary files...that's just Windows trying to report that something is wrong. If the system could boot, they might be useful.Louis

OK - here's the problem:

Withing maybe 90 seconds of my computer (32-bit vista) turning on and logging in and everything, two windows pop up. The first says that the "Services and Controller app has stopped working" and then the other says "You are about to be logged off" at the top and then "Windows has encountered a critical error and will restart automatically in one minute. Please save your work now."

Then, sure enough, after a minute, the computer restarts. I can't seem to figure out if there's a specific trigger for it, but I know it happens shortly after booting. Right now it's running fine in safe mode, but other than that I don't know what to do. I've run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware which cleared some of the other junk on my computer, but left this. Also, google links redirect me to various ad sites.

I received an error message which said:

"Services and Controller App has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for this inconvenience."

It then went on to ask if I wanted to report the error to Microsoft. Countdown then shutdown

This occurs every hour or so whether I am on line or not, and often while the computer is in screen saver mode. many friends have warned about worms but my virus scan (agv) can't find anything. I have even run it in safe mode.

The problem is very irritating. My research finds there can be tons of reasons for this.

Hi there, I've been looking for a solution for this and I'm almost loosing my mind...

For 5 days now, I have inserted an old CD on my DELL LATITUDE E5400 with some MP3 files and old stuff.
As soon as I opened a file...BUM....malware and trojans everywhere.
I managed to clean everything with Malware Bytes but from that moment on I can't connect to the Internet without appearing that Services and Controller App stop working and it starts rebooting in 60 sec.
I managed to find out that it only occurs with Wireless ON.
I can connect with my LAN cable and work normally and browsing the WEB as long as I shut down my WIFI switch.
Since software and hardware is not my cup of tea, is there any good soul that can help me out here?
Please let me know what kind of logs you want me to attach so someone can have a deeper look....
Million thanks

alright. originally, i had a problem with a windows error message coming up and saying that the services and controller app had encountered a problem......send or dont send. I hit dont send, and a new error popped up saying that the system was being remotely shut down by NT AUTHORITY/ SYSTEM. Googled the problem, thought it might be msblast or sasser and discovered that ISASS.exe was a playing factor in the problem. Next time the error popped up i ctrl+alt+del and killed the ISASS.exe process. the message stopped and i was able tor run a STINGER scan. scan came up clean. ran it in safe mode.....clean. I tried EVERYTHING that was suggested in EVERY forem i could find.....nothing worked. So i tried my own way. Avast. thats all it took. Avast found it, and got rid of the 60 sec time limit.....but now i still get the Services and Controller error message......

anyone know why? anyone know how to fix it?? i am open to ALL suggestions, just let me know any possibilities.

I am attempting to help a friend fix their computer which was badly infected with some viruses and malware. I have read some other posts in this forum and have followed the instructions given. I beleive I have gotten rid of most of the problems, but now I get an error:

Services & controller app has encountered a problem and needs to close
Then I get the 60 second countdown to shut down from NT Authority.

Any help appreciated.

I don't believe you're still infected, rather an infected file was deleted or quarantined and needs to be replaced. You need an original Windows CD and run SFC /scannowhttp://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/43051/how-to-use-sfcexe-to-repair-system-files/

I keep recieving this message randomly and if i click dont send then a box will pop up saying Services.exe has been terminated unexpectedly. Then the computer will restart after a 60 second timer. But i found a way to stop it from shutting down. If you run shutdown /a then it wont but then the computer goes really slow and services.exe is NOT in the task manager. which i dont think is too good.
I have ran manny things like PC tools antivirus and trenmicro free online antivirus and ad aware and finally i have ran ccleaner. It all got rid of the regualr things like spyware but did not find any viruses.

I ran HijakThis and htis is what i got:

I'll try to keep this short but I've really never had a problem that I couldn't get around before, and though I've searched all over the net I can't seem to find anyone with these exact problems.

Recently installed a new hard drive and dvd burner to my system with Windows XP SP1. Previously had no problems as far as spyware, viruses, etc... Well, these two installed fine and were working fine. A day or two after installing them though, windows told me it would need to reactivate itself due to the configuration change. Did that, went fine, but afterwards I was able to update to service pack 2 and a few other things that never would install properly previously. Very soon after SP2 and the other updates go in, things start acting abnormally and the situation deteriorated quickly.

Eventually I've ended up with two things happening. The first is an error about Services and Controller app. Now I've seen other users with this problem, but some files are a little different, and/or there was no solution.

I've been getting error messages, followed by a spontaneous shutdown of my Windows XP system. First I get an error that says there is a problem with the services and controller app and it must shut down. Then I get a message saying that "C:\\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe terminated unexpectedly with status code -1073741819. The system will now shutdown and restart."

Tonight I got a blue screen of death, and after restarting I had an error message stating that winlogon.exe had terminated unexpectedly. I have run several complete virus scans with Norton Security and Stinger in normal and safe mode. I've also run Adaware and Spybot, none of which has turned up any malware, spyware, trojans or viruses.

Here is my hijack this log:

I'm looking for a windows program that does what the linux program for deamons does. I can't quite remember the name of the program in Linux, but there is one that keeps deamons running, if a deamon uses too much memory or shutsdown it restarts it. I need a program like this for windows, something that will restart services if they crash automatically so I don't have to restart windows or find out what services crashed. Is there anything like this for windows?

Answer:Keep XP services running without restart PC

Is there anything like this for windows?Have you tried the net stop/net start commands and service name (in quotes) in the command prompt?i_Xp/Vista/W7User

I was recently asked to clean an infected Win7 computer that would not boot. With rescue discs (updated versions of AVG and Windows Defender offline scanners) I cleaned what appeared to be a ZeroAccess infection.

With the infection cleaned the computer still would not boot. BSOD 0x000000F4. At this point I ran Farbar scan tool which indicated a missing services.exe file. The farbar log was otherwise very clean.

From the windows recovery environment I ran SFC /SCANNOW to replace the missing services.exe file. I then tried to boot Windows again but got the same 0x000000F4 blue screen. From the recovery envrionment I checked and again services.exe was missing from system32. Once more I replaced the file, and this time confirmed that it had in fact been replaced. Tried to boot Windows but again same result, blue screen, and services.exe again missing.

I've tried replacing it half a dozen times to no avail. It simply gets deleted as soon as I attempt to actually boot into Windows. Same thing happens if trying to boot to safe mode after replacing services.exe.

Repeated offline scans turn up nothing but I can't seem to solve the problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Has anyone here tried automating the restart of BES Services.
Anytime the Exchange server restarts at any of our clients with BES, I have to either restart the BES server or restart the BES services to get BES to reconnect.

Maybe I could make a script to restart those services and have it run delayed startup by a few minutes on the Exchange server.

Answer:Automate Restart of BES Services

what do you use for monitoring? I've done similar with Solarwinds IP monitor and HP's Sitescope server, but you coud write a small script to do the same thing. jsut define your error condition, test for the condition, if detected execute wmi call to restart service, continue monitoring..

Hi Guys,

We have been getting this problem on any machine that is not connected to our domain. We first thought that this was caused by the Mcafee virus software we have installed on our images, as the program is told to update from our servers, and without connection to the domain it is unable to do so.
However, even after removing the Mcafee software completely, the problem still persists. I dont believe this is a virus or worm problem as connection to the domain stops the error from appearing.

The attached images are screenshots of the error messages, I believe they are pretty standard and will contain no information that will specifically help in this matter, but just in case. After these screens are closed, and 1 minute timer counts down for a reboot.

Oddly, after removing the Mcafee software, once the countdown finishes it no longer reboots the machine, but rather stops any new actions running (including shutdown or rebooting).

Any help or direction would be appreciated.

Thanks

I found someone with the same problem that posted on another board here:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/193268/services-controllers-causing-60sec-shutdown/The problem was answered by Rigel and I followed the same steps he outlined for the other user. I installed Malwarebytes' Anti'Malware, ran a quick scan on all drives, removed all found items, and am posting the log file here. The issues I'm having with my computer are:- Boot Windows XP and receive the following error: "Service and Controller app has encountered a problem and needs to close. - We are sorry for the inconvenience." This is the typical Windows error message that give you the option to Debug, Send Error Report, or Don't Send. - When that window is closed it triggers an automatic system shutdown. - Once rebooted the process starts again.- If the Services and Controller app error message is ignored (left open and nothing clicked) I can still use my computer, but IE, Firefox, and most browser windows (My Computer, Folders, etc.) will not open. - I am able to use Google Chrome as an alternate.**When running the Malwarebytes' program I did get three notifications from my McAfee Antivirus program of a new virus detected - W32/Waledac.gen.a After searching online the NAI site lists this as a virus discovered today and covered in the DAT files released today. I've also updated my Antivirus with the latest DAT files. I use McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5.0i[Malwarebytes' Log File]Malwarebytes' Anti-Mal... Read more

Answer:Services And Controller App Has Encountered A Problem And Needs To Close.

I apologize for the very long delay. We have a huge backlog of HijackThis Logs to handle and it has been taking us greater time than normal to get caught up. If you are still having a problem, and want us to analyze your information, please post a brand new hijackthis log. If we do not hear back from you within a couple of days we will need to close your topic. When posting your logs please post them directly into the reply. Do not attach them or include them codeboxes going forward.Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts. If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious. It is also possible that you may need to disable your Antivirus or Antimalware programs before this program can run properly A guide on how to temporarily disable many of the common protections programs can be found here. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimizedCopy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply. If you have any problems with the logs, both can be found in C:\Deckard\System Scanner.
