Power options problem leads to administrator problem and worse

Question: Power options problem leads to administrator problem and worse

When I set the power option on my pc to have the monitor turn off after so many minutes it does not work. What I mean is that the monitor goes black for one second then comes back on. This problem just started a few days ago. I posted a thread on another forum and someone suggested I run msconfig and inspect the startup tab to see if there was something in there that might be causing the problem. I saw three things in there that I had uninstalled ... nero, incd, and sagetv. I cleared the checkboxes for those three then clicked okay. That is when things started going really bad. I immediately got an error message saying that I may need administrator privelages to make the changes. I am the admin on this computer, I have been since I installed XP. When I clicked okay on that box I was prompted to restart the computer which I did. When it rebooted I then got a message that said major hardware changes had taken place since the last time XP was started and that I had to reactivate XP. No hardware changes were made at all so this totally baffles me. I still can't make changes in msconfig and I am being reminded about every 5 minutes that I need to reactivate XP. I know this was a long winded post but I wanted to be sure and get as much info in there as I could. If you have any suggestions or questions I would love to hear them.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hardware problem:

Windows 7 machine, approximately 1 year old.

Sequence of events:

1. Computer would not start. Diagnostics run:
a. Used different power cable.
b. Shorted power pins with screwdriver to check for problem with power button on case. Did not start.
c. Checked power supply, it was fine.

2. Took computer to geek squad (I know, I know, they were the only place that was open). They did the following:
a. Checked power cable.
b. Checked power supply.
c. Swapped the RAM around... at which point it started. But there was a software issue? So they used some "repair
disk" I'm not sure what it did. But then computer worked.

3. Took computer home, now it boots to desktop, and I can use the keyboard, but only when I plug it into one specific usb slot. It doesn't work in any of the other USB slots. No other USB devices appear to work, including the mouse.

What to do?

Answer:Power problem leads to USB problem... complicated.

It was my mouse. MY FRICKIN MOUSE.

I finally got into windows by tabbing around with my keyboard. Plugged in the mouse and managed to tab around for the error, windows was showing that my mouse was causing a power surge on the USB hub.

Switched to different mouse.

Everything works.

Hi there,

Running Win2k on one of our PCs, I find I can change the Power Options for the Administrator user, but not for other users. With guest users I get the error message "Power Policy Manager unable to set active policy: Access is Denied"

Any ideas how to get around this? I'm trying to cut our electricity usage, this seems to be the only computer that won't play ball.

Many thanks

Nick Sandberg

Answer:Power Options Problem

The only thing I can think of is you are not logged in on the Administrative account. The change you make there should apply globally -- the limited account should pick it up.

Not sure if this is the right place but here goes.
I have a Compaq Pressario V5000. I use it in the kitchen/den area. I leave it on all the time as I use it a lot. My problem is that I am unable to change the Power Option settings in Control Panel. I would like to be able to change the settings to "never" when connected via AC. I can change but they settings return to the default? Thanks for any help.

Have a Toshiba Satellite L550 i5 8GB RAM 120GB Crucial M4 running Home premium 7 and I am having a problem with the screen going bright on unplugging the power supply and onto battery then reverting back to a dimmer screen when power is plugged back in.

Have tried all the settings in Power Options with no difference in any of the options.

I do notice that usually when one move the brightness control slider for power in say high power settings the brightness of the screen does not change as one moves the slider.

Anyone got any suggestions for cause please as I am thinking maybe my power adaptor is failing.

Answer:Power options problem

I saw this post this morning. I'm surprised no one has responded.

I would check to see if there are any power options in BIOS settings. Not usual for a laptop, but worth checking. Be sure they are enabled and either S1 or S3.

If that looks OK you could try this MrFixIt:
Fix power consumption problems and extend the laptop battery life
Described here (MS link is broken):
Reset, Fix Power Options In Windows 7 [How-To]

You could also create a new power plan, name it "Diagnostic", and maximize all settings (Never, Never, Never... Full Brightness, etc) and see if it does the same thing.

And you could also create a new user, create the Diagnostic plan, and try that. See if anything changes that might shed light on the cause.

Hope that helps!

I've this issue from day one! I bought my Toshiba Tecra R840 almost 2 years ago (Win7 Pro, i7, 8GBRAM, 512 GB SSD,...). What about the issue:

My Power Options are:
when running on battery: brightness=40%
when plugged in: brightness=100%

If I click apply, this would be ok for a while (I will say 24 hours). But then for some reason (and I do not change anything) the brightness will go to 40% no matter if I running battery or if I'm plugged! And I will need to adjust brightness again!

Any help?

Hi everyone,
My bottom fan on my PC was being very loud, so I opened up my case and unplugged the power supply, and flicked off the power switch on the back. I unscrewed the bottom fan and dusted it a little bit, and then I put it back together how it was before.

The part that I unscrewed also contained my hard drive, and now that it is reseated I cannot boot.

At first I got an error when booting:
Loading operating system . . .
disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter.

THEN, I tried making sure everything was connected well and tight, and now I am not getting anything displayed on my screen.

Apologies for the lack of knowledge and thanks for the help.

Answer:Boot problem, getting worse and worse

It is possible that when you removed the fan and hard drive, you plugged the hard drives SATA cable into a different SATA port on the motherboard. Get into the bios, and make sure that the hard drive is being detected properly

So my buddy brought over his laptop running windows XP service pack 2 and when he brought it here it wouldn't even start. So i started by using Trinity Rescue kit and used clamav to scan for virus'. It found some virus's and put them in a tar ball and rebooted. I am now able to boot the computer now and tried to install Malwarebytes' but when i click the exe nothing happens. Then i tried to install Spybot Search and destroy and the installer will launch but when it tries to download the "additional files" there is an error that reads,
"Error Sending request.

A connection with the server could not be established"

So i gave up on that and moved to trying to use the avg that he had installed. When i try to scan with avg all the components mysteriously deactivate. When i try to go to any websites i get blocked out and a anti virus 2009 ad comes out warning me that i have virus' and that i can remove them with antivirus 2009. Iv done everything i could think of is there anyway i can fix this? any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Some types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it. Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run..***Another work around is by not using the mouse to install it, Just use the arrow keys, tab, and enter keys.If you cannot use the Internet, you will need access to another computer that has a connection. From there save mbam-setup.exe to a flash, usb, jump drive or CD. Now transfer it to the infected machine, then install and run the program. If you cannot transfer to or install on the infected machine, try running the setup (installation) file directly from the flash drive or CD by double-clicking on mbam-setup.exe so it will install on the hard drive.Manually Downloading Updates: Manually download them from HERE and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.

Today I started experiencing annoying stuff on my lap top.  At various times surveys would pop up or special notices once on
Anyway I downloaded combofix (after first running the bleeping computer program, I forget the name, to check for malware etc.
So after I ran combo fix it said it was moving one file then it needed to restart computer so I said okay
When it starts up its goes bad when I get to the desktop area there is like an application box that is flashing really fast off and on and I have no control over the system
I restarted again to the same thing but I was able to see the file name of the flashing box thing and it was combofix
So now what do I do?   I have no control over the computer when I start it up that file shows up and flashes very rapidly
What to do????
Is there a way during boot-up to invoke the restore to early time?

Answer:One thing leads to another (problem) with ComboFix

Hello JayJax
We would be glad to help you on this issue here. If we can get some information about the PC. If you can tell us the make and model of the PC and what operating system the PC has. That way we can help you get the Safe Mode with Networking option so that the CF can complete or be removed. On a lot of systems like HP you can tap on F8 at the boot of the PC and it will give you the advanced boot options and then you can use the down arrow and select Safe Mode with Networking. Then you can run tools as needed. I do not want to recommend and software until we can learn more about the PC to see what can be affected by the running of repair software.

I tried to open a Word document (that I had created some time has 'copy and pasted' material in it from a website....but I have opened it before) and it caused instability in Word, would not open (despite several attempts) and seemed to upset my computer. In the end I shut my computer down and re-started.......this took a long, long time as it didn't seem to want to start, but eventually did.

I tried the Word document again, but a message came up telling me that last time I tried this it caused a serious problem.....did I want to try again?...I said no. I would like to open this document, but am fearful of trying again.

However, of much more concern, when I went to Outlook Express I have found to my horror that all the messages in my Inbox have gone (major problem...11,000 e-mails) and all the Deleted Items also (not a problem). As far as I can tell, all my filed e-mails (many) and my sent items (6,000) are still there........very confusing?!

Hopefully I have a back-up of my data (from a few weeks ago) on an external drive, but I have no idea how to get the Inbox file converted to e-mails and back into Outlook......without risking the ones already there.

Can you please help (and perhaps cast light on how the Word problem has had such a major effect on Outlook)?

About a month ago my computer started making a clicking noise now and then and would stutter a bit while I was playing my games. The click sounded like the big click while turning the computer on and off. I thought nothing of it but a couple of weeks later my windows became corrupted (it would only go to the black screen giving you five options to start windows and then would restart). I reformatted and it worked fine but the clicking remained. Then while playing a different game a couple of weeks later I got a click during a loading screen and the computer froze up forcing me to reboot. The computer would freeze at the same point in the load screen every time so I tried minimizing at that point. It finished the load screen and I got into the game but at the next load screen later on the problem happened again. I uninstalled the game and everything was working fine again but a week later while playing a different game that normally offers no problems at all, I encountered the same problem at a load screen in the game. After reinstalling my video drivers the problem remained. It locked up and I had to restart the computer. After restarting I got the black screen with the 5 options for starting the computer but each selection simply restarted the computer. So now I'm back to sqare one with a corrupted windows. Answer:Hardware problem that leads to repeated corruption of windows

It sounds like a messed up HD. See if you remove the cover from the macine, if you can hear it clicking (assuming you can get winblows to start). If you can't, remove the hard drive from the machine, and then reconnect the cables for it, making sure it is insulated from anything metal on it's electronics board, and then see if you can hear it clicking.

Ususlly, when they go like this, it is either the logic board on the HD, or the workings inside.

Good luck.

I have a generic MB (P-120 CPU ) which I just switched to a different case and power supply. It has an extra "six pin power type connection" in the middle of the board. Only one supply that I have matchs this and the wires are three green and three black. What is the funtion of this connector, it looks from the wire colors to be some form of switch.

Its a case of not wanting to swap out the power suppy from my other unit unless necessary. I have 4 other supplies and none have the extra wire, which is listed as P10.

Many thanks in advance.

Ok bear with me as I try to explain this.

-There was a power outage in my area and my computer restarted. After restarting it would hang at the Windows loading screen with the blue bar, and it would stay like that forever.

-I went into safe mode which works fine and tried a system restore to an earlier date, and still wouldn't load.

-Went back into safe mode and it said Restoration Complete. Ran msconfig to do a diagnostic boot...still no luck.

-Ran chkdsk /r using Recovery Console, said it fixed the errors but still hangs at the same screen. Ran Samsung HD utility and detected ECC errors.

-Tried to do a Repair Windows installation using an original Windows cd, so it was SP1 when I had SP2. I tried a Windows XP Pro SP2 cd but there was no repair option so I went to my original, which was Home.

-Through the install there was a few errors such as COM+, directdb.dll, inetcomm.dll,msoe.dll and wab32.dll. I clicked okay with all of them and installation completed fine.

-After restarting, loading would be REALLY slow, and actually wouldn't go past the wallpaper. I checked task manager and explorer.exe isn't even there.

-Went into safe mode, which was super slow as well, and same thing with the no icons. Ran safe mode with Command prompt and opened system restore, only to find no restore points.

I am now at a loss as to what I should do.
Any help guys?

Thanks in advance for your help and your valuable service to the community.

I picked up a nasty virus / malware recently and have tried to use McAfee and several Malware removers over the past 3 days to no avail. Everytime I seem to make progress something new emerges.

This started with the Antivirus 2009 Pro Malware taking over. It changed my file associations so I couldn't run any .exe's. It even removed the View Folder Options menu so that I couldn't re-associate the file extensions. Fortunately I was able to logon to the adminstrator logon and fix that issue.

I tried to do an XP repair but was unable to when the application couldn't recognize my administrator password even though I can log into the admin logon with that same password. I then ran Macfee, Spybot and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. This seemed to clear up most of my problems although I noticed a prior issue of still having one or more iexplore.exe processes running even though I didn't have an IE browser open.

Sure enough the next day I suddenly was unable to connect to the internet.
I finally found your forum and started to follow your proceedures for cleaning.

I was unsuccessful in running several of the procedures. I have found that my DHCP Service will not start and gets the error "Error 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion". When I try to look at dependencies I get the error "Win32: Access id denied".

What OS are you running?
Did you try getting into safe mode and doing a system restore to before this started?
Did you try renaming the programs, running them in safe mode, or changing the .exe extension to .com?
Did you disable your AV and AS programs before running any of the scans?

what i can remember are a bunch of zeros or numbers and the 'fatal error' at the bottom of the paragraph. then my computer restarts.

when my computer boots up, a voice comes on saying "System completed power-on self test, computer now booting from operating system". but now every once in a while it says "System failed memory test, computer now booting from operating system".

Answer:IE8 problem - is it getting worse

This issue may be caused by some 3rd party add-ons that you may have installed on both of your PC's. Try reseting the IE settings to disable add-ons:
Close any IE or Windows Explorer windows that are currently open.
Open a new IE window.
Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.
In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset. When Internet Explorer finishes restoring the settings, click Close, and then click OK.
Close IE. (The changes will take effect the next time you open IE.)
After that, please open IE again to verify if the issue has been resloved.
If this doesn't help....
Can I suggest that you try another browser such as Firefox to see if the problem still occurs.
You could also try rolling back IE8 to a previous version.

I would like to make my laptop sleep immediately when it goes on to battery power, but under "power options"-"Edit plan settings", the minimum time I can select for it to sleep on battery is 1 minute, or so it seems.

Also, under "advanced settings" for Power Options, I have set it to sleep as the action at both low and critical levels when on battery. But the laptop still does not sleep immediately on battery .

The reason why I want it to sleep immediately on battery is because the battery is so weak that it only lasts 30 seconds max when the power mains cuts out! If I don't notice that the power lead has fallen out, the laptop crashes, I lose my work and then takes ages to reboot.

Forgive my ignorance if I'm missing something obvious, but I'm a bit of a novice with Vista

I have Vista Home Premium.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

i have been having some problem while running windows on my computer.

i will be sat there quite happily listing to music while chatting to people over msn and the music will suddenly stop, it will say its still playing and the little visilisation thing in the bottem right hand side of media player kinda styays where it is and moves contntly a tiny bit,
once this has happened however i have NO sound on my computer at all, not even system noises,

this makes no sence to me, i thought at first it was codec problems (fd show) but why would that have any control over any other sound on the computer,

normally i just restart it and its fine for a while when it will do it again,
except this "while" has become dramatically smaller,

i am vvveerrry confused,

just another note i am using a gigbit ga-7vt600 i think with an athlon xp,
not using defualt sound (i thought it was due to the fact i have two sounds cards in there plus the on-board, but i disabled the on bored and it made no differnce,
the sound card is aureal audio au 8830 vortex, with another creative genric soundcard just for djing, the vortex card is connected to my speakers via a surround sound system via and optical output,

i tryed changing the defuat sound card after it happens and seeing if it works but it stilll dosent

can you help me?

I'm having a really tough time trying to get rid of a Trojan (I think that's what it is). At first my Kaspersky found a trojan that wanted to load from a website, which I blocked when asked if that is the action I wanted to take. This was last night. I blocked it, but soon afterward found that Internet Explorer would load automatically without any toolbars, and most importantly--> automatically. I use Foxfire so IE shouldn't be opening. It would load to an ad site (without toolbars or anything). I looked at Kaspersky's report to see if what I had blocked previously was doing this, and found this entry --> rundll32.exe "C:\Windows\system32\kiherana.dll and also two other entries, identical except for the dll part which were fugisode.dll and yawafuku.dll. I went to my windows\system32 file and renamed the dll's to see what would happen. IE stopped loading as often but would still come up. So I went to the registry to see what was going on (Kaspersky had written out the registry key as well). Here's were it gets interesting (so to speak).

I found rundll32.exe "C:\Windows\System32\kihevana.dll",b
rundll32.exe "C:\Windows\System32\fugisode.dll",a
and rundll32.exe "C:\Windows\System32\yawafuku.dll",s in the HKLM Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVerion\Run section of the registry.

I could easily delete the first... Read more

My problem started Sunday when I kept getting the screen which gives you the "Safe Mode" option, but no matter what I clicked I kept getting the "Safe Mode" screen. I called tech support and after I followed his suggestions I got a screen that said " Load needed DLLs for kernel" etc. The tech guy said I'd have to reinstall and would probably lose everything.
Monday I went and googled the error message to see if I could find more options, and which brought me to this forum. I followed the directions for the guide to reinstalling windows, however it set up a new Windows directory on my H drive (Before it was on my C drive).

1. Are my files still on my computer or did I screw up and erase everything? If my files are still on my computer how can I access them?
2. When I start my computer I get a menu giving me a choice of several Windows systems to choose from, one will get me to the new installation the other choices I will still get the same error message.
3. I could not find the Windows CD that came with my PC so I used a Windows XP professional edition that I had on my last computer. The PC I have now has XP home edition. Would this cause a problem?

Anything you can do to help will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Hi there. I think I have a spyware problem or worse...

Welcome to TSF.

Before we begin, can you tell us how antiwpa.dll got onto your computer? It is a crack software to bypass copy protection for Windows.

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read this posting.

A while back, I upgraded my father's Sony Vaio PC (model VCG-RB44G) to Windows XP Professional (from Windows Media Edition). This required me to take the computer to my place in order to work on it.

Since my father took it back to his place, he has been having off-and-on problems with the performance of his PC. Sometimes it works fine, but other times it is slow to boot up, runs slowly for a short period of time and then works fine again, and sometimes it even crashes. There is also on occasion a strange chirping noise that sounds almost musical that is intermittent (which during this time the performance of the computer grinds to a halt).

Can anyone tell me if I am looking at a Windows XP problem or is it something with the hardware?

My mother-in-laws computer has the Smitfraud virus. It had no Anti-virus protection at all at the time.

I, unfortunately, immediately loaded and ran McAfee from AOL. After the scan was complete, it reported deleting several files. It also requested quarantining a file, which I did. I then restarted to see if the (I now know) ubiquitous Smitfraud background went away.

Not only did the background not go away, the desktop icons and task bar were gone! Several restarts: no change. Safe mode: no change. The system is running to the extent that ctrl/alt/del works and allows me to bring up Task Manager. From that I can run AOL, Word, and some other things. However, I have no Start button to access control panel to add/remove programs as the Smitfraud instructions indicate.

So, should I perform the Smitfraud removal instructions that I can without the control panel? I should be able to do everything except add/remove programs.

Or what? Any guidance would be great.

Maybe you folks can help me with a problem that's abruptly appeared in the last week.  I'll give the system info first, then the way the problem appeared, and then what things I've tried to resolve it. Well, I am assuming it is all put together correctly. I can't see it and you can. With the power supply being replaced, the motherboard is the next suspect, but first:Remove ALL of the add in cards, the oprical drives and all hard drives. Just the motherboard, CPU w/heatsink/fan, 1 stick RAM and video card (if no onboard video) and see if can boot from a floppy. ( if you need one)If that works add one hard drive and recheck. Then add one thing at a time and see when the system fails. Give each "build" a reasonable length of time to assess functionality (an hour or so at each stage). If that doesn't work (gulp) it might be time for other replacements.  :-/The RAM can be tested with a free download at  Run each stick for an hour at a time or so, and then all together.Free hard drive diagnostics can be downloaded (for a bootable floppy) at the appropriate drive maker's web site.

This is my Windows computer that the wife uses, so to prevent any more earache I need a cure. The computer is running XP Home.Specs as follows:AMD 64 X2 3800Asus A8N Sli mobo2 x 1gb Crucial 3200 DDR2 X 80gb Maxter SATA drivesSeasonic S12 600 watt PSU2 x 7600 GT Nvidia graphics cards.HP lightscibe DVD/RW, Sony CD/RW / DVD Rom.I am not sure where to post this as i am not sure if it is a software or hardware problem. This has been happening for about 6 months now.Basically on rare occasions it will go through POST successfully, then the screen comes up with the moving bar, then after the bar has made about five full passes the screen goes blank.Normally pressing the reset button will cure it and it boots OK.I have posted about this problem before when it would not boot into windows at all and I got round it by doing an Acronis restore, I have just tried that again and Acronis will not pick up my external hard drive to restore from.Eventually after about 25 reboots I managed to get into Windows and had a look in the event viewer and the only error I could see was this. The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load atapi PCIIde.Can anyone help as this has me really frustrated, I do not now where to start looking.I have stripped it back to the bare essentials and no problems, then added different components and it ran with no problems for a while and now it is back with the intermittent problem and it has just taken me 25 reboots to get it to work.

Answer:Intermittent problem getting worse.

Hi, afraid I cannot provide any cure, except to say that I had a very similar problem requiring multiple reboots to get going - it turned out eventually to be a mobo problem, got new mobo, have had no problems since. This was all about 18 months ago.Good luck.

Hi, I have been having problems with adwares and whatever on my machine that I cannot remove, no matter what I have tried. I have tried AVG Antispyware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware 2007 and a fix I downloaded from Symantec's website. The problem is that I keep getting false spyware prevention programs opening IE7 and popping up at random. Every single time I have tried to deal with this, I have found a program called VirtuMonde, and no matter what I do, even in safe mode, it still turns up all the time. My last resort was to try a hijackthis log, but I can make no sense of it. I wondered if anyone could help me?

Hi all,

My Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop is on the older side (purchased in 2005), but was running just fine up until a few days ago. I booted up my computer and got an error message saying "STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file):\System Root\System32\Config\DEFAULT or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable"

I tried rebooting in safe mode, to no avail. I also saw on a thread on this site something about pushing CTRL and F11 during reboot. That has now led me to a new issue. Now I can't even get it to come back to the other "STOP" error screen because every time I boot up my computer follows this progression:

1) Dell screen
2) black screen with "Loading PBR 3 ...done" and some other text which includes an error but flashes by too quickly for me to read,
3) a window pops up labeled "Dell PC Restore by Symantec" and states "The Dell system recovery tool has detected an unsupported change in your master boot record. The tool cannot run at this time."

Is there anything I can do to deal with these issues and get back to the way my laptop was? I'm hoping to be able to recover the documents (and most importantly photos) that were saved on my computer, though I am scared that may not be possible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:STOP:C0000218 error leads to a problem with my master boot record? Help?

Error Message When You Install Windows XP: "STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}"

Did you make any changes to your system or add hardware that isn't compatible with your system? The Microsoft article suggests either incompatible hardware or a damaged hard disk drive (even though you didn't just install XP as the article suggests).

Battery problem, app update issue, lock screen as well start screen hang problem.
Am I the only one facing this issue or all the people out there in this build facing similar issue.
Desperately need another update very sooner.

Hi Guys,
I recently had major problems with OE6, and with some help managed to back it up and get it up and running again.

The only problem is I have this folder sitting on my Desktop with all my old mail in it (.dbx files) and I am unable to import it. When I use the import function I just get an error 'No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open. Please select another folder or try closing applications that may have files open.'

Of course, there is no application & the folder does contain my .dbx files.

I read somewhere that I simply have to copy and paste these .dbx files, but I have done that - pasting them into what I think is the OE message folder but this does not work.

Now I have been playing around with OE6, created a new identity and that didn't work. Now when I open Outlook Express most of my mails that were in there and working, have now disappeared BUT the .dbx files for these folders still exists in the Store Folder!!

Please can anyone help - this is driving me crazy!!!

Thanks in advance,

I don't even know where to begin with this. I've never been defeated so horribly. I cannot make any sense of this problem. I'm having the problems on the system shown below. Beginning about six months ago I started having these problems.
I would get blue screens once inawhile and there would be different error messages every time. Finally the o.s. hard drive started making a horrible buzzing and so I swapped it out for a different one. Alright... things seem to be going alright.
I leave my computer on for a week or so and there's no problems...until something causes me to have to restart. Half the time the drives aren't recogonized upon boot-up and if they are windows freezes mid boot. Usually after an hour of tinkering.. reorganizing the drives, shouting profanities and putting my fist through a wall it will reboot again.. until another week goes by and the same process repeats itself.
Now the o.s. drive I swapped out before is making excessive clicking sounds when booting. So I think maybe this one is bad.. just like the last one was bad.. I'm really burning through the drives here.. but that's alright, i've got drives laying all over. So today I pull out my seagate drive that i bought new a month ago. Naturally my motherboard doesnt recogonize the seagate...but in only 1 configuration... three drives have to be hooked up including the clicky one with the o.s. on it now and the jumper settings have to... Read more

Answer:6 months and I've only made the problem worse.

You bought a new seagate ....have you tried removing all the other drives (hard) and booting up with the seagate setup utility ...then try install os in it?

Have you run Everest on it to look at what it reports or run memtest?

What is the exact error code on the BSOD?

How are all your three drives hooked up? Assuming master on last primary IDE/ slave on middle connection and....third on the secondary IDE along with the cd rom?

Have you run a disk check on the master?

My T400 gets shut down from time to time so I decided to clean it before my big project comes. So I got the fan out following the maintainance manual and blowed it dry with a duster. However, after I put all the parts back together, it got worse: It cannot even run over 5 min using the adapter. When I use the battery, the CPU temperature is around 60 C. The CPU usage reaches to 100% and as I checked the progresses in task manager I don't see anything big running. Its my first time opening a laptop so I think I might did someting wrong when i assemble or disassemble it. Anybody can help me figure out where the problem can possibly is?

Answer:Overheating problem gets worse after I cleaned my fan

Hi happysilvia, and welcome,
Did you only remove the fan, or did you also remove the heatsink assembly from the CPU?  If you disturbed the heatsink to CPU contact, did you clean it and apply thermal compound?  If you disturbed the CPU to heatsink assembly connection without reapplying compound, that might explain your issues.
Others may/will have better suggestions, but I don't remove a fan to clean it.

So earlier today, my laptop started acting up. My windows updates were disabled, and my desktop changed to a black screen with red letters saying my laptop was infected, with a bunch of extra text. So I ran MBAM and it detected 23 items. Most were removed and I haven't had that black screen occur again. But every time I've run it after that, 3 files always come up:

Trojan Vundo.H - Registry Value (under Other category: Value wuradoreva)
Trojan Vundo.H - Registry Key
Trojan Vundo.H - Registry Key

Every time I run MBAM, these 3 always appear. Even after I've clicked "removed selected."

On top of that, I've also had a problem with google redirecting. :/

I recently had some sort of virus/malware attack my laptop which meant I was unable to access the internet. Its not a problem with the wireless as far as i'm aware as other people have been able to connect. The windows connection diagnostics said there was a winsock catalog error but sometimes it gives me different messages.

I attempted to try and fix it, firstly by running norton goback and then attempting to use DrWeb but think I've made it alot worse (did that before reading the first 'DO NOT FIX YOURSELF' page on the forum - schoolboy error).
A few virusy type things that have come up in the scan are 'trojan.swizzor' and 'adware.xbarre' and 'tool.killproc.3' - Think they are quarantined but not entirerly sure. i have the scan results saved if you require them at a later date.
i'm writing this from another pc as the laptop cannot connect to the internet.

Sorry in advance if this has come up hundreds of times before, The computer could turn off at any minute for all I know (It has blue lines all over and the resolution is really out) :/

So the problem is, I started getting a message which read: Hard Disc S.M.A.R.T. Status BAD backup and replace; It allowed you to press F1 in order to start the computer normally which has been fine for about a week or so, (I'm really stupid for ignoring this warning I know).

I restarted the computer when it froze and then it froze again...but this time it blue screened saying the file nv4_disp is causing the problem, to which I have no idea what this file is.

I left it for an hour and it has come back on, I started it up in normal mode and the blue lines and the bad resolution as mentioned above are here but I am obviously able to access the internet fine.

Hope this helps you lot to work out what is wrong (hope it isn't too hard to fix)
Thanks, James.

Answer:Hard Disc Problem(s)? or worse?

SMART is a part of the bios on the motherboard that tells you the integrity of the Hard Drive. It is telling you that the HDD is about to fail and to back up the data on the drive as soon as possible, because you are going to have a failure any minute. You will need to purchase a new HDD and reinstall everything.

The problem stops after I unplug my modem or get to task manager if it loads

Okay, I visited a site I have been to many times before dating back a couple of years. The site now has many ads and such now. When on a page recently something was trying to load the url "" unexpectedly. This caused my browser to go wild and the resources being used in Task Manager went up to the 280k range for Firefox alone. The pdf continued to try to load and everything froze until I unplugged my modem. Then after pressing CTRL+ALt+DLT I got a "failed to something security options" message (not sure exactly). I then pressed again and my task manager came up.

I was able to close the tab which this unauthorized "pdf" was trying to load in afterwards. I shut everything down did scans, cleared browser cookies etc., defragmented. YOU NAME IT I did the basics and everything came back clean. Then I went back to this site to report the issue. Everything was fine until I tried to access a certain thread again. I am a nongeek in need of Major Geek Help!

It all startrd yesterday when my IE would not open. I would receive the message:
"IE has encountered a problem and needs to close"

I contacted Dell support and we uninstalled & reinstalled IE. It did not help.

I have a home network, so I downloaded the latest IE 6.0 from MS on a different pc and shipped it to the troubled machine. After install, I had the same problem.

I then shipped Netscape over to the troubled machine and loaded. I got it to work but did not set it as my default browser.

Through NS, I purchased, dnld, and instlld Nortan Internet Security2004 Professional. I also downloaded Earthlink's TotalAccess 2004.

Norton found a Trojan Horse in a file madise.dll and recommended I quarantine it.

It did not solve the problem.

I decided to remove TA2004 and when I rebooted, I get the following message after getting into my user account:

"TaskPanl.exe - Unable to locate component......The application has failed to start because E60Cmmon.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem".

After clicking OK, OK, I then get:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library....Run Time Error!..... Program:C:\Windows\surfmonkey\smproxy.exe............
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information".

Clicking the OK button will not make the message go away.

That caused a BSOD.

I Activated
3. Upon reactivation it seemed to completely rebuild my user profile.
Then I could not see any programs in the start menu history areas either the programs or the files. Also I was unable to unlock the task bar or make any other changes that were user preferences.
4. I found registry fixes in the forums but could not do them since my registry did not appear to match.
5. Windows update wanted to fix my problem, so I ran it.

Now my machine will not start in any mode.

Can I run recovery from the original disk?

Answer:Windows Update makes problem worse

Hi Mcmspark,

You can boot the Vista dvd and access System Restore to restore back to a poaint before you started having issues

There`s a guide for booting and restoring Vista here: System Restore - How to

What did you mean "an unauthorized change.." I havnt seen this within Vista before?

I have tried to solve this problem by re installing Firefox and trying Chrome as well as IE.  I continually get the notice from whichever browser i use that it cannot find the web site.  It takes many tries before i am able to access the site.  I have scanned with Malwarebytes, SUPERantispyware and Avast and nothing unusual is found. It seems to be worse daily and is now starting to send me crazy!  It will even give me the same message when moving from one section of a site to another.
Thanking you for any help offered.  Regards.  JH

Answer:Firefox can't find the web site...this problem is getting worse.

Sounds like it could be a damaged winsock file or dns issues.
Please try:
1. Open an elevated command prompt by typing cmd into the search box upon clicking the start orb.
2. When cmd.exe shows up on the list up top either right click it and choose "Run as Administrator" or press Ctrl + Shift and hit Enter.
3. Type netsh winsock reset
4. Let it reset the files and then restart your PC.
Also while doing that:
Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark all the  checkboxes:
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy - , *Please post the URL in your next reply along with the MiniToolBox results.*

Hello. I've browsed these forums before after needing help, but this is my first post. As you will be able to tell, I'm not that technically minded, so forgive me please if this question seems obvious to you. I'd sure appreciate any help.

I have a Toshiba Satellite M60 which is just over 2 years old. I've noticed recently that the battery life was getting very poor; it was running at little under 30 minutes if I was watching a DVD, for example.

Last week, the laptop would not turn on. It tried to get started, but then just cut out before powering up. I tried a few things, including taking the battery out, putting it back in and then starting again, and it then did start just fine. However, it would only start with the mains electricity not connected; only on battery alone. I am still starting the laptop like this, and the problem is still the same. To start my laptop, I have to remove my battery, put it back in, start up, and then when it has powered up, I put the mains power in. If I do this before, it won't start.

Do you think this is likely to be just the battery that needs replacing, or is the problem more severe? I am no longer under guarantee, so don't want to pay for a service if a replacement battery would solve the problem, but similarly I don't want to pay for a battery only to find that doesn't work, and the have to pay for a service as well.

I hope you can help. It will be much appreciated.

Answer:Toshiba Satellite M60 problem. Battery or worse?

You didn't say if it worked the other way around
Power in , Battery always out

If it works like that, then it's likely battery
If it doesn't then it's likely onboard power converter (that one may be tricky!)

By the way, when removing both power sources, you should hold down the power button for 30 secs, dispersing all internal voltage (this may also fix it)

So I started doing "READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide" on my desktop (XP) a few weeks ago and it was a success. The problem was browser redirects. Lately the same problem has plagued my laptop (Vista) to such a degree that is it unbearable, so, with previous success in mind, I used the same method on my laptop. Now the browser redirect problem seems to be gone, but somehow I've gotten something worse now.

Now I'm getting what seems to be one of the symptoms of Vundo (it had been detected in the past and removed, according to one of the scanner specified in the Read and Run Me First). I have no problem other than a constantly crash and restarting Windows Explorer. That seems to be the only problem I'm having (aside from a blue screen of death 0x0000007e usbhub.sys problem on shutdown/hibernation, which occurred months before and should be unrelated). I can still access my files in very limited capacity, using task manager's new task button (which brings up an explorer-like menu for you to choose which task to start) to copy/cut/run whatever.

Now, here's what I did (that were out of the ordinary, compared to the instructions).

I had to repeatedly run Malwarebyte and Superantispyware a couple times, because I have a 140GB drive which required the scanners to take a while, and a lot of times they're not done by the time I have to leave the house and need to cancel the scan to bring it with me to do some other work late... Hi,A silly question (maybe) but i don't know the answer!I have a notebook that i want to use in North America - would it be ok to connect it to the power via a 2 pin plug via the power pack or would i need a new power pack that will work with the North American power supply?

Answer:Power Leads for Notebooks

Depends on the notebook. Check with the manufacturers first. Most will be OK, I'm fairly sure but you may have just the odd one that isn't.At least the USA power is lower voltage than here so it is unlikely to burn out from overvoltage.

Answer:labelling power leads

I've got one of theseclick hereThe labels are printed on a sticky coloured foil tape which I stick to the Power adaptors so that they don't get mixed up. You can also wrap them around a wire to form a sort of tag. You can get all sorts of colours of tape but the yellow one shows up well.

Was in the colonies for a few weeks, picked up 2 ThinkPad's and love them to death, but I don't like having to lug around a USA to EU power adapter. Now the only part I need to actually change is the cable that goes from the wall to the brick, do you sell those separately? Thanks!

Hi Constantine, welcome to the forum, which power lead do you need? There are two types, 2 prong and 3 prong. See this thread from Tim_Lenovo.Guessing, I would say you need the 2 prong, aka "Euro-Flat", you can get these in any electrical / computer shop. Usually cost about ?2.

For around two or three months the system has been crashing on a weekly or biweekly basis and wasn't so much of a problem as to interfere and warrant investigation on my part. Within the past few days, however, it has gotten much worse and now crashes at least once daily. I have done what I can with my limited computer skills and determined ntoskrnl.exe is the culprit and followed some potential solutions found on this forum as well as other sites but to no avail. Although it may be mere coincidence, I feel it is worth noting that the vast majority of crashes (90%+) occur when the computer has been left on but I am not currently at the desk working on anything. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!

I sent in my laptop for repair as the graphics card was reporting code 43 (hardware issue) and wasn't working. I just got it back, and it's not reporting the error, but I can't even start GPU-based games. Previously, games would fall back to running on the CPU. My warranty expired during the repair, but since this is a symptom of the same issue, can I get it fixed? How can I go about getting this laptop to work? Thank you.

Ok for the last month or so I have been dealing with a BSOD that will pop up randomly. At first I thought it was a RAM problem but have run memtest and replaced both sticks of RAM. I'm leaning towards it being a video card problem because I was getting a Memory Parity Error BSOD, and also an atidiag BSOD. Those 2 BSOD's would alternate. Well now I just get random BSOD's that could be almost anyfile name.

The main problem I have now is I can't get by the windows boot screen, and if I do, no more than 2 mins later I get another BSOD. Occasionally I don't even make the windows boot screen. I have tried to do a windows repair by booting off the CD, but it crashes while the windows CD loads all the drivers or whatever, so I can't even reinstall windows if I wanted to.

I also have recently reformated the hard drive, done a clean install of windows and have not solved this problem. I'm still leaning towards it being a video card problem, but now my question is could the video card cause a crash before windows even starts up? Or am I looking more towards a motherboard problem? I'm lost as to what to do, it's not like I could run diagnostics on it (which would be pointless cause I've done all tests possible.)

I would appreciate any help that can be offered. I'd be more than happy to give you anymore information if you need it. Thank you guys in advance.

Answer:BSOD has gotten worse, can not figure out the problem, I turn to you guys.

Random BSODs that point to nearly everything is either memory or motherboard problems, in my experience. If you have access to other systems and components, replace everything in your computer except the motherboard. If you still have problems, it's your motherboard. If the problems stop, add your own components back one by one until the problems return. Whichever part you added just before that, is your guy.

Good luck!

8 pin to 8 pin

Answer:new graphics card power leads

You have 2 x 6+2 pin pci-e cables with this PSU, example use one of them ,one end connecting to the PSU & one end with all the 6+2 pins gripped together then plug into the graphic card's 8 pins power connection.
Same with the other one but leave out the extra 2 pins while plugging into the 6 pins power connection of the graphic card.

Hi all, I'm new on the forums. Best Windows 7 forums btw, have helped me a lot.

So I'm having two different or same kind of problems. I really need help to solve these!

? Problem number one:I'm having a strange freezing problem. Sometimes randomly my desktop freezes. I can't right-click any icons, remove icons or do anything for them. To solve this problem every time I need to reboot or log off and log in again. Then Sometimes my explorer.exe -process dies randomly and same kind of problem appears. Any fixes?
? Problem number two:I'm the system administrator, but sometimes randomly I don't have an access to change some directories or files. Sometimes if I download a file, I can't save it to the desktop. What is this all about and how I can solve this?
Specs:? CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 @ 4,4GHz
? Mainboard: Asus P5Q Pro
? GFX: Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4850 Mb
? Memory: 4 Gb Exceleram DDR2 1110MHz
? Soundcard: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer
? Storage: ~1 Tb
? OS: Windows 7 Ultimate OEM 64bit newest version
Everything else works fine still, but these are two annoying problems I'm facing.

Thanks, xoxo

ur second problem is caused by the application experience service not running. by having that disables you will get that permissions error after you navigate into any newly created folder. if this is not the issue then something else has altered your permissions

First thought is it sounds as if the 'left-click' is sticking or repeating very fast.
Does the same effect happen if you use the touch pad or a plugged-in USB mouse?
Can you go into Control panel, hardware, devices and printers, mouse, 'Pointer options' tab. Set the 'Set pointer speed' in the centre of the scale.
Then untick the box 'Enhance pointer precision'
In the 'Buttons' tab, click 'Restore defaults'
See if that makes any difference.

For the past six weeks, I've had a simple search engine redirecting virus on my Windows 7. For five weeks, I tried running typical anti-virus software such as MalwareBytes, AVG 2013, and Microsoft Security Essentials. It wasn't too harmful, and I pretty much just needed to click a search engine result a second time and I would get to where I needed to go. However, this past week during a long holiday break, I tried running new antivirus software such as Super Anti-Spyware, Spybot, ComboFix, and TDSSKiller. The last two seemed successful at finding problems, but at the cost of the virus reacting viciously and deleting files and cutting off access to the internet.
I tried system restore, and was able to get it mostly back to the way it was before trying to install the new antivirus software, except that I now need to grant permission to allow Adobe Flash videos to work every time I wish to view one. This problem mostly occurred on Firefox, so I swapped to Internet Explorer. However, IE seemed to just recently develop a new problem of its own called Sweetpacks, and the homepage and searches are redirected to this obvious virus page. Checked back on Firefox, which I had uninstalled and reinstalled, and noticed that Firefox was able to disable this Sweetpacks add-on because it detected the security risk.

NEVER buy a Lenovo  I just bought a brand new Flex laptop from the Microsoft Store.  A MAJOR PROBLEM for those who use the touchpad.  It doesn't allow the user to turn off the drag in the mouse buttons (only).  When I use the touch pad, i move the cursor (for example to select a radial button).  However when I go to click on the left or right mouse buttons on the touch pad it's so sensitive to movement that it moves the curosor away from the radial button. There should be a way to map the touch pad.  Lenovo blames the software and the touchpad company.  Yet they chose this touchpad.  I need support from one company.  They sent me to talk with the touchpad company.  Sorry.  It's your Laptop Lenovo.  To add to Lenovo's problem, their support is in India and it is almost impossible to understand the support person or their supervisor.

Answer:Options Missing from Power Options Advanced Settings

Hello Mossalot, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The power options you have available are determined by Windows for your specific system.

Hi guys, I have a strange problem here. This is actually a continuation of the thread "struck by lightning", so if this belongs there, my apologies.

Let me start from the beginning: Both my rigs were hit by lightning back in mid summer, and I had to completely rebuild both from the ground up. Rig #1 (my personal rig) has had no problems since rebuilding, but rig #2 (my sons/fiance's rig) wasn't booting up at all. I had given up on rig #2 for a month or so, then got back on it; a lot of part swaps and voltage checks later confirmed that the brand new PSU I had purchased (Corsair 850W modular) was in fact bad, even though my voltage checks showed no problems. So I purchased a 600W single rail PSU (48A on 12v rail), since it was all I could afford for the time being. HEre are the following specs for rig #2:

AMD Phenom II quad core, 3.3 GHz

G-Skill Ripjaws series 4x 2 GB sticks

ATi Radeon 5750 1 GB Graphics card

Corsair 600W single - rail gaming series PSU (48A on 12V rail)

Thermaltake V1 120mm cpu heatsink/fan

HD: WD 750GB

Cooling: Azza case running 2x 250mm and 4x 120mm fans

Here's the strange stuff that's going on now: I DL'd the most current drievers for all of my hardware (directly from the websites - I never use the included driver disks). When I powered it on, I got the same result from the 1st time I had issues rebuilding it (black screen, no post). I thought that maybe I had yet anoth... Read more

Hi, HP G60 laptop, occasionally I get a thermal cutout when sthg exceptional is going on.
When this has happened, I get a BSOD after a restart and get stuck in a restart loop a couple of times and can't boot normally and don't get my boot menu (Win 10 or Safe Mode).

(Yes, I've tried cleaning the fan and this happened in Win 8.1 too).

So having upgraded to win 10 I had hoped this might have been solved. It never happened with Win 7 or Vista on hte same laptop, so it seems it's a 'feature' of the automatic repair sequence introduced in Win 8.

The only way out is to pull the power cord out just after power on, for example, and do a cold boot.

It's as if some flag is retained forcing Windows into its automatic repair sequence.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Otherwise, all seems (mostly) ok apart from a couple of programs now not finding an audio card since upgrading.

Answer:Thermal cutout leads to BSOD/restarts until I pull the power cord out

IMHO, your problem is overheated and by cleaning the FAN is not enough. I don't think it was caused by W8 or W10, maybe in the early day when using W7, Vista, your laptop was not as bad as it is now. If you are confident, you can disassemble the laptop and clean up the inside real good, put some new thermal paste on the CPU. You can search in for instruction how to disassemble your Laptop.

replaced optiplex gx 270 motherboard with dimension 4200 all connections work except the front power button/usb as 270 has 2 sub plates with leads that change in pin design from one board to the next.

I want a way to bypass this mess making it the easiest way possble to connect to dimension motherboard.

not to mention cutting down on the amount of cords stringing from one to the next..

Answer:bypass optiplex gx 270 front power leads to connect to dimension 2400

Get a new case. It will have standard front panel connections which are typically separate wires capable of supporting any ATX motherboard. Any other solution will be Mickey Mouse. A new case will support future upgrades and most likely much better cooling options.

Went for lunch yesterday and when I came back to my PC it was off (running for 6 hours as usual). Tried to reboot but it would not start. checked power chord, switched it off at back, then turned back on and it rebooted so far and then cut out again. Switched it off again and back on at the back and this time it rebooted ok and ran ok for at least another 8 hours. This morning I booted up and as I went to log on it cut out again and will not power up at all. I've had it apart and there is no obvious damage or loose connections. When I turn it on at the back, the power supply fan initially spins and then stops, which I believe happens normally but then nothing. So far I have found 4V on the motherboard connector. What's your opinion? Steve

Answer:Power Supply or Worse?

I think it is your PSU - try blowing the dust out first - the fan may just need a good clean.

I got a new computer and am trying to use Ghost 2003 to clone my hard drive. I have tried using a LPT cable, CDr's and DVDR'. It tells me that the clone has been successful, but when I reboot it I get a blue screen that says "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer".

At the bottom it says" Technical Information Stop:0x0000007b" along with a bunch of other similar numbers.

This is driving me nuts, can someone please help?

I did a search, but did not really find anything that matched my problem.

Ahoy, been scouring the posts here for a problem related to mine. No luck. First I should say that I live in a big house with a lot of people and this computer is widely used. So some of the information may be a tad blury. My room mates comp was on the fritz. It first started about months ago. He turned the comp on one day and it got to the "Starting Windows" screen. The next screen was a quick shot of the blue screen of death, then the comp restarted. It was an endless cycle.

I checked it all out... he said "F" it.... just format the drive. So I format and reinstall XP pro. Alls fine and dandy for a week or to. Then he gets some message saying that some system32 *.dll is missing, and it wouldnt load the explorer. I dont know what caused this. So we're stuck looking at his desktop and playing with the Task Manager. He says "F" it again.... not much on there yet.... just reformat. And thats where I am now. I load the cd-up... start the installation, get a fresh partition in there.... format it. ................5%.................26%............ .....47%..............62%..............
............................72%..............72%.. ......................72%.

It stays at 72%. You could let it sit there for 10 hours and it wont get past 72%.

Anyone else have this problem. Any suggestions would me m... Read more

Answer:Problem leads to format.... now the format is the problem.

uhm.. when you format does it say anything about bad sectors on the hard drive?

I have an older Belkin F6C1500-TW-RK UPS and the mfg has not offered software management for the Win 7 64bit OS. I want to let Win 7 manage the battery and shutdown. I set the High Performance under Power Options to turn off display and put the computer to sleep after 3 minutes as a test. I yanked the input to the UPS and nothing happens and I went at least 5-6 minutes (didn't time). The battery icon in the sys tray stated 2 minutes remaining and never moved.

I have connected the UPS via USB and the Device and Printers, USB Input Device show the drivers are fine and the UPS is working.

Am I misunderstanding what Win 7 will do on its own without mfg monitoring software?

The attached are screen shots how I set the advanced settings

Answer:How to set Advanced options in Power Options (64 bit Ultimate)

Welcome to 7Forums!

With those options, you can set how much time windows will take an action after you are not taking any action
So if you set 3 minutes for turning off the screen or going to sleep and leave it alone it will scedule these action after 3 minutes.
I don't really understand the part where you explain that the timer stopps. I do not recommend setting the same values for both options under 'on battery' or 'plugged in' state.
I would just increase the 'on battery' / sleep time to 5 or 10 minutes and see if it works.

Ok so last night the power went out for a minute or two then came back on. I turned on my computer and after 5 seconds it turned back off. I don't know if the PSU blew out or if something else got fried.

The computer won't turn on so i figure its the PSU. I don't get how it would blow out 5 seconds after the computer turns on though. Is the PSU my only problem?

Answer:Power supply unit or worse?

could there no power whatsoever (leds, anything)?

I manually went through and updated all of my drivers, made sure Windows didn't have any updates for me, but now I am getting Driver Power State Failure almost every hour. First the cursor begins to lag. Every like 7 seconds it lags for around 3 seconds, then the internet goes out. And it wont come back on until I restart/shut down the laptop. But I can't even do that now. When I get to the blue screen for the error, it gets to 100%, then doesn't restart. So I have to hold the power button, which I am afraid of doing. Is there any way this can be fixed? I'm doing the sfc /scannow right now, but I wanted to make sure I got this posted first. Ill edit this when that is finishedEDIT: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations"

The issue is u cant use it plug in so u only can use it without the power cable on, need to charge computer and recharge to be able to use it. Like if when u plug it in made a contact with something or takes to much load of energy that causes to freeze or dont go up. Thinking can be the power plug inside conection with the motherboard? any suggestions?

Answer:Toshiba Satellite A205-S5804 Power problem issue anyone had this problem?

What type of ac adapter do you have, voltages and have you tried another type of ac adapter ?

I don't know for sure, but... it sounds like something is wrong with the ac jack.
Those can be replaced easily if you know how to solder, the part will cost less 7 dollars USA wise but shipping to you might be another issue due to your location.

Recently i got problem with my computer

After I shut down my entire computer the next time when i try to reopen it

It doesn't come out, the Power light is on, monitor power light also on but the booting(the red light) which indicates the computer is running isn't working anymore i check the every possible cable like the Power Supply, HDD , Video Card, Monitor, every things works fine, but my computer doesn't even booting.

So I don't really Know what the problem is right now

can someone tell me which part should i fix it.

thank you

Answer:PC Problem dunno what problem it is not Video Card, Not Power Supply, Not HDD, Not MB

Open the PC, then switch it on. Check that all fans (in the powersupply, on the CPU, perhaps also on the graphics card and the motherboard) are running.
If not, tell us which one is not working.
Most likely your powersupply no longer works. Give us the manufacturer's name and model, please.
