Hard Drive Monitoring Program.

Question: Hard Drive Monitoring Program.

Hello all, I have just installed a hard drive monitoring program called HDD Health 2.1. Soon after I installed it an alert popped up on my screen advising that my hard drive (C) that contained my OS, programs and data had reached 46 degrees. What was worse however was that my other hard drive that only contains backups was reading 49 degrees. At the time I wasn't using that one at all, because I wasn't restoring or backing up. What is going on?
Thanks for your help!
Cheers

Preferred Solution: Hard Drive Monitoring Program.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Just read an article that suggested that a "must have" is a Hard Drive Monitoring Program. They did not tout any particular one. It was suggested that this type program is essential because it can not only provide you with the condition of your HD but also give you a "heads up" as to when your HD is in trouble and about to fail.

I was wondering if any of our group use such a program and, if so, which one, and the pros and cons relative to such a program.

Thanks,
Red Boy

The way I do it is open up the management console and then pick connect to computer connect to the users computer in question and am able to go into their Disk Management. This works if your on a domain structure and you have admin rights to the PC's in question.

Hi. I am using the registered version of Hard Drive Health by Helexis software and I know someone who wouldn't mind having software monitor his hard drives but he doesn't want to pay for it (cheapskate!) I have seen this kind of program mentioned in the Forum but unfortunately I can't find it on Google after typing 'freeware hard drive monitoring program'. It uses SMART technology to monitor the drives and (with my version anyway) it hardly uses up any memory or CPU resources. Anyone know of a link to download it? Thanks in advance.

I have just installed a second hard drive which I only use for backup purposes.

Do I need to have System Restore monitoring this drive or not ?

Answer:System Restore Monitoring Second Hard Drive?

I would turn off system restore if it's just used for data or backups. Only reason to have System Restore enabled is if you have programs or system files installed that actually run from that drive.

I have been troubleshooting some hard drive noises and am concerned with the temperatures of my hard drive.

Speed Fan has the internal temp at 54C and Western Digital says the normal operating temps are 5-55C BUT this is external temp.

So I am looking to monitor the external temp of my hard drive and have no googling luck or Newegg luck in finding an external monitor.

Any suggestions are welcome.

I have spent hours "googling" solutions and even tho this question has been asked... a lot... it's never the exact same as to what I want to ask, so I appologize in advance if I am just repeating something.
I have a Dell Desktop..Vista... it was running like **** about a year ago - still worked... but it was Vista so I shut'er down and bought a laptop... just recently I decided to dust off the Desktop and bring it out... for the kids to play on. First I was getting a black screen asking for a password... google showed me how to switch some thing inside the computer - i dunno but it worked.... now I am getting error msgs like "diskette drive 0 seek failure" and " NOTICE - Hard Drive SELF MONITORING SYSTEM..." some other things about SATA0: & SATA1:....
Also... not sure if it's just because now I use a laptop but that Desktop sounds like a small engine plane starting up.... I am going out tomorrow to buy a battery as I read on one of the threats that this battery inside (the little disc thing) could be dieing/dead....
All I want to do is turn this crappy computer on so the kids can listen to music, and play games without breaking my NEW computer

Answer:Diskette drive 0 - Hard drive self monitoring...

When you switched the jumper you set the bios back to factory defaults. You need to reset the bios so that it no longer seeks a floppy drive on boot up, set it to boot from CD first, Then HDD.

Hi everyone,
Can someone please help me in disabling this notice I receive before booting into Windows? "Notice: Hard Drive Self Monitoring System has reported that a parameter has exceeded it's normal operating range. Dell recommends that you backup your data regularly. Press F2 to continue." I found no options to turn this off. After I press F2 and exit the BIOS. I am booted into Windows 7 normally.
I just bought a new Seagate SSD drive "ST240HM000" 240GB, 6GB/s SATA and installed it into my desktop which is a Dell Studio XPS 8000. There is nothing wrong with the hard drive since I have already done diagnostics and tests. I've already tried Pre-boot system assessment, Dell Diagnostics in F12 and Dell Diagnostics from the CD that came with my computer. Nothing is wrong with my Studio XPS 8000. (Nothing has been wrong until I installed this SSD drive receiving the notice) The computer passed all Diagnostic tests it was given. I did the entire test (which took all day). The hard drive is not defective. I have fully installed Windows 7 on it as well. The hard drive has passed all tests and I found no errors with the hard drive.
I am assuming my motherboard or BIOS does not recognize the hard drive since it is a SSD (Internal Solid State Drive). I have checked if there are updates for my BIOS in Dell support but there hasn't been since 2009. My BIOS is already updated to 2009. I think the BIOS may be reading the drive as exceeding the operating ra... Read more

Answer:Please help. How to remove 'Hard Drive Self Monitoring System' notice?

Hi diggadang,
As the message says, this is a system incorporated into the drive itself (self monitoring). It's not reported by the BIOS. My recommendation would be to contact Seagate. There may be a firmware or other update required.

Hi All,

I've tried checking the MG software lists, google, etc., haven't really found a good, free program that'll let me monitor my HDDs SMART status in real time on Win7. I've had a few hard drives fail on me recently, just upgraded my motherboard/cpu/ram, and want to make sure my old HD isnt going to fail on me. Looking for something in the form of a taskbar, out of the way software to monitor my HDD status in the background, or, a gadget.

Need it to be compatibile with Win7 x64.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

When I booted my system up today i saw the following message on a black screen:
Notice - Hard drive self monitoring system has reported that a parameter has exceeded its normal operating range. Dell recommends that you back up you data regularly. A parameter out of range may or may not indicate a potential hard drive problem.
Press F2 to Resume.

Has anyone seen this message before and knows what I should do?

Prior to seeing that message and rebooting the screen looked like the attached picture. I'm also attaching the error message.

Thanks.

I've used HDDGuardian for years on Windows 7 with no problems. Since upgrading to Windows 10, I've noticed that the process exits itself after a certain period of time (when the screen saver comes on, or when the computer goes to sleep). In typical fashion (not exclusive to this software), the tray icon remains there but disappears as soon as you mouse over it (because the process has ended).

I reinstalled HDDGuardian (was running 0.62, the current version already), since Win10 was an upgrade, not a fresh install. The problem did not go away.

So I decided to switch to DiskCheckup, but the problem persists - the process exists after a certain period of time.

No other resident software (tray icon or not) has this issue.

Is there something about windows 10 that HD monitoring software makers haven't updated to enable compatibility/proper functioning?

Anyone here using one of the two pieces of SW above, or any other disk monitoring software, successfully?

TIA

You can also use the built in Terminal Services Manager under Administrative Tools. You can access all terminal servers through that interface.

I've spent the last hour or so scouring Google for a simple program that will let me see every change/addition the installation of a program makes to the registry during installation. I tried to use Sandboxie, but it kept giving me weird errors (I know Sandboxie works fine, I've used it on plenty of other programs before) If that program could also show me every directory it adds/modifies on my computer that would be awesome as well, but right now I mainly want to see what it's putting in the registry. If anyone has any such programs in mind I'd love them since apparently Google can't find any for me.

I did see some stuff about one called RegMod, but all the links I found were broken, and it seems like a really old program anyway.

Thanks

What do you use for a router?

The best bandwidth monitoring comes from routers as they see all inbound/outbound traffic directly. But most consumer routers lack monitoring functions.

Windows already has one, it's called "Windows Installer" service, and the "report module" is the "Programs and Features" control panel applet... Then there's the HUGE database that Windows use to keep track of everything, called "The Registry"...

I need a program exactly like HWmonitor, but it has to keep a log of the temps and voltages, not just a one-time report, but a log where every 5 seconds or so the temps/voltages are added to the TXT file as a new entry (or on a new line or a new section), and each entry would have a timestamp. I need this 'cuz I have a PC here that is shutting of at random, and I'm having a heck of a time tracking down the cause. I've tested the HD, RAM; both are 100% OK. I've tested/swapped the power supply. The temps and voltages I've seen have been completely acceptable, but it seems like whenever I leave to do something else, I come back and the PC is off. The motherboard has no popped capacitors and was recently replaced. All sleep and hibernation settings have been disabled. So- I need to log the temps/voltages so I can track exactly what's happening when my back is turned.

DO you want to see what is going across the network (Packet Sniffing) or what connections are open? (port Monitor)

For packet sniffing use Ethereal

Note: Ethereal or (any other packet sniffer) is really a tool for network admins or other advanced users. Unless you understand the protocols used, reconstructing TCP/IP streams probably isn't going to show you much.

my fans in my tower have been acting up and i don't have the money at the moment to replace them all.... mostly it seems once the computer boots up the fans work fine.
but a few times a fan is starting up really slow and my computer will go in to the BIOS to show me that one of my fans is spinning far too slow... but after about a minute the fan speed goes to what seems to be the normal speed for the rest of the fans.

so i was thinking about getting a monitoring program to be able to check the speed of my fans and/or temp of my motherboard/CPU.

but since i try to not have to over clock my system ever i have never really looked in to monitoring programs and have no idea if i should use one for what motherboard i have or if there is one that will work for pretty much any computer system.

Answer:What Motherboard Monitoring Program Should I Use?

I'm not sure what advantage a monitoring program would give you? Since you're already being warned of the problem (a fan fault) surely checking which fan is starting slowly and replacing just that fan is what you need to do. One fan should not be too expensive.

Hi all, for the last few hours I have scoured the internet in an attempt to find the best internet monitoring software for what I want but have ultimately gotten stuck. I was hoping that someone with a bit of knowledge about this on here might be able to direct me, seeing as these programs aren't cheap. Win-Spy had everything I wanted, however their site seemed rather odd and reviews I read said that they collect your personal data (such as credit card info when you buy it) and then later misuse it. So basically the features I want in the program are:-To monitor everything (key logs, chats, emails, sites visited, programs accessed, screenshots, etc)-Have Remote Install (Install the program on a PC I don't have access to but I want this done WITHOUT its user knowing it)Obviously they all come with a lot more, but the most important features for me are the ones listed above. If there is no solution for that, do you know a good program that can help monitor my computer's temperature? I've tried Motherboard Monitor 5, but it doesn't support my DFI motherboard.

Thanks so much.

I would recommend picking up a 5.25" front bay (fan & temp controller), if you've got a free 5.25 bay?

they work pretty decent... plus adds a nice touch to your case.

Hello,
I am looking to a good alternative to Everest Ultimate Engineer. I used to use everest to monitor all of my temperatures and how much of my CPU is being utilized on one of my other monitors.

If you guys know of any good applications let me know.

Thanks.

Speedfan and HWmonitor say that my load temperatures are 55C. Realtemp and Coretemp say that my load temperatures are 50C. I need to know which programs are correct because I would like to further overclock my processor from 3.6ghz to 3.8ghz. If I do so, my load temps in Speedfan and HWmonitor will be over 60C whereas they will be under 60C, and thus at an acceptable level, in Realtemp and Coretemp.

Answer:Which temperature monitoring program is right for my C2D processor?

I don't trust SpeedFan, but RealTemp/CoreTemp are good ones. I'd go by those. Could always compare idle temps in BIOS to idle temps in the programs.

What is the best program to monitor my CPU temps, voltages, etc in realtime? I just built a new i7 system, and I want to get a good program to monitor the CPU temps, Fan RPMs, Voltages, and other motherboard information.

I would prefer one that has a nice gadget/window that I can have on my desktop 24/7. I used to use Motherboard Monitor 5, and I really liked the Dashboard window that it had. It would hide itself along the side of my screen and pop up whenever I put my mouse over it to display all the temps, voltages, and rpms in a nice small window.

Does anyone know of a good program that will monitor all the ethernet jacks on a router to see how much traffic each jack is using? Or do they exist? Just wondering, because the internet in this house has become terribly slow, and don't really know where/what the problem is. No one is downloading anything or gaming, and it's really slow. I guess I could just disconnect each ethernet cord 1 by 1 and see where the source is.

Hi All,I need a free program that can monitor/check the ink levels on my CANON BJC50 Bubblejet. Any links much appreciated. Many Thanks, AlexP.S My O.S is XP Pro

Answer:Ink Level Monitoring Free Program

There is probably is not one. Think about it there, is no software feed back connection from printer to computer, ecpt for paper jams and that type of malfunctionEven those that show such a device- e.g. EPSON- it is a fudge that simply counts the number of pages passing through the printer.Obviously if the pages have on the one hand a letterhead and ten lines of text- then the ink usage will be far less then full blown A4 photo'sEven though a given number of sheets have passed through.

is there a simple program that shows what programs are using or connecting to the internet

Answer:internet traffic program v. monitoring

The simplest of all is netstat (network status), a command line utility in Windows. Open a Command Prompt, type netstat -a and it'll list everything that's using the network interface(s) with inbound and outbound connection endpoints. Only downside is that it's a run once type utility; run it and it'll tell you what's open at the time you ran it, that's it.

ActivePorts is a great tool that allows for real-time monitoring and updating of the current connections inbound and outbound. You can get a download link for it from this page:

On my previous computer, I used a bandwidth monitoring program called Networx. However, that computer later developed a crippling problem (the main hard drive locking up at random, unpredictable intervals). I had the computer tested, and the problem couldn't be identified, except that the hard drive was apparently not the issue. To this day, the issue still hasn't been identified.

I can't rule out Networx as a possible cause, as it apparently installs a driver during installation, and I have read posts here on TenForums that state that this driver may have caused computer crashes. But I need a good bandwidth monitoring program for my new computer that allows me to tell how much bandwidth I have used in a particular time period (my ISP takes three days to update my bandwidth usage information).

It turns out that there is also a portable version of Networx, which I downloaded and ran (on my new computer), before deciding that this was an unwise decision. Now, I'm afraid that even running it might have installed a dangerous driver, even though the program itself didn't have to install. I quickly deleted it, but the damage may have already been done. Is it possible that it did install a driver without my knowledge?

Does anyone know a good, safe bandwidth monitoring program, especially one that doesn't install drivers and hasn't been associated with computer crashes?

Answer:Safe bandwidth monitoring program?

I've been using Networx on two Win10 PC's with no issues whatsoever, however the latest version is no longer free, when updating it converts to a 30 day trial, bit of a sneaky way of doing it IMO, cost $29 per year for a 5PC licence.
Haven't decided on or if any replacement yet as can monitor usage through router anyway.

I'm looking for a program that will allow me to monitor which programs are using network (internet) bandwidth. XP's Task Manager was telling my usage was 100%, and I haven't a clue what was using it. UD was not downloading WU's, I'm not downloading anything...

As much as it should have been built into Task Manager, I guess I'll just have to run a seperate program

Does such a program exist?

I sure hope so...

Thanks in advance...

Answer:Monitoring Network Usage By Program

Yes a program does exist. Its called Fluke Protocol Inspector and its very expensive and very hard to use. It does everything needed to examine a network and packets sent to and from devices in the network.

Are there any programs out there that's able to monitor the bandwidth usage of every computer on a network?

Answer:Network bandwith monitoring program?

Depending on where you want the monitoring yes. There are 2 ways I could see doing this.

If the switches support SNMP any monitoring application that can poll the switches interface counters. MRTG, Zabbix, etc.
Flow based monitoring on the router, this may not be as precise though depending on how the flows are tracked.

Hello community!

I would like a recommendation of any program that allows controlling or at least monitoring the use of a computer, preferably free. e.g: a program that somehow allows to block the use of the computer after a certain time has elapsed, or at least that indicates with a notification that a certain time of use has been fulfilled.

Thanks!

Answer:Program to control/monitoring the use of a computer

Windows has had a feature for this built into Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and now it's in or available in Windows 10. It's called Parental Controls, just do a search on your pc for it.
I'm not sure of the monitoring features portion of it, but you can control when the pc can be used by each user, what software they can use, what website's Microsoft web browsers can go to and what games can be played by them. You can also configure the times for everything (I/e: User A; can play games from 6:30 P.M.-8:00 P.M., can use this software from 3:30P.M.- 10:00P.M., etc.)

1. Clone my primary hard drive to a secondary hard drive which will be bootable if needed to replace the primary drive, and

2. Update the cloned drive with all subsequent changes made to the primary hard drive.

Anybody got any suggestions.

[I am running Windows XP Home SP3]

Answer:Program To Clone Hard Drive

Sounds like you are asking for RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks).

The level of RAID you are referencing is RAID1. This mirrors 2 drives so that if one fails, the other still works, and data is not lost.

Kind of expensive to implement though, you will have to judge if it is practical for your situation.

Unless of course, you don't need to make the changes constantly. If you are just looking to update daily rather than real-time then norton ghost might be all you need.

I have the Pinnacle Studio Delux which I use to put still photos with transitions and music and burn to DVD or vhs tapes. In Pinnacle booklet, it says it will work better if it is on it's own hard drive, so I had someone install a second hard drive for me, but it does not work.
1. I cannot download program to this second hard drive (no programs), the only thing I have been able to use this second hard drive for is for storage (photos/documents, etc.). I am think ing this second hard drive has something missing, is the second hard drive suppose to have it's own operating system?
2, I install the Pinnacle to the master hard drive and it is now not working correctly there either, it runs real slow and when you go to render the video, it keeps crashing. The program worked fine before I installed a secondary hard drive, it was a little slow but it worked fine, now I cannot get this to work correctly at all. I had the person who put the second hard drive in come to check it, but they said it is not the computer, it is the program, but, my question is why did it work before and also why can't I use the second hard drive for anything but storage?
If you can solve any of these problems, it would be WONDERFUL!

Answer:hard drive program transfer

You can't! You can move files, but the registry and file assosiations need to be set on the primary system partition and also have the support files installed. The install program will install dll's and other system files in many locations so it is more than a matter of just moving them.

Answer:Program to check what is using my hard drive much?

You have one way already in your pc. Go into 'Task manager', then 'performance' tab, then 'resource monitor'. The 'Overview' tab tells you what is happening. It is very useful to show if you have enough RAM installed for the programs you are running.
*One idea though, do you have a defragmentation program installed, which is set to run in the background or 'smart/auto' mode ?

Click on 'Download' tab.
(The link for the download is near the bottom of the site, just above the blue advert. 'Download installer version' is the one.)
Run it 'as administrator'. This program highlights the programs which have just been active with a coloured background, which may help you .

I dont know if this would go in gaming or not:

Ok i have my OS on one hard drive. I have another free hard drive (exact same kind as the OS is on) that i can put programs or what ever into.

As far as speed goes (least lag, load times, etc.) would it be best to put the application.... for example a game, onto the hard drive that carries the OS or into the empty hard drive?

Or would it be best to put the game onto the OS hard drive and then put the paging file into the empty hard drive (non OS)?

Answer:Running A program from Non OS Hard Drive

I personally have Windows XP on one harddrive along with a "storage" partition, then I install all my applications and games on the separate hard drive. Im sure it would load faster as it doesn't have to load OS stuff from the same hard drive. My pagefile is on the windows partition i guess. I didn't know you could change the pagefile location?
