RS232 Question

Question: RS232 Question

I am planning on building a small form factor PC but it will need RS232. I don't know for sure if there will be room for an add on card for the RS232. Is there a usb to RS232? If so, will it work as good as an add on card?

Preferred Solution: RS232 Question

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: RS232 Question

Check out this link: TRENDnet USB to RS-232 . I do not personally own one, but I have used them at my job and they seem to work pretty well. You may have a driver issue, depending on the OS you will be using, but for the most part it works.

Question: USB - RS232

On my old pc i used a belkin ups with their bulldog software. The ups connected to the pc via a serial cable and all worked very well.So I buys a new pc and realise that it doesn't have a serial port. So I get a USB- RS232 cable (serial connector one end to connect to the ups and a USB conector the other end).I installed the drivers from the disk that came wit the usb/serail cable but the ups is not detected. Interestingly if I go into device manager, after installing the driver, and expand the tree so that i can see the driver one minute its there the next the device manager tree closes then opens and the driver disappears then it re-appears!My operating system is win xp home sp2.

Answer:USB - RS232

TomGI've used usb-serial converters, not all with the same degree of success. In most cases however, a reboot seemed to cure most ails, and sometimes only with the usb converter connected before boot up. Not a lot offer, but might be worth a try if you haven't already...

Question: RS232 on TV

RS232 on TV and Freeview Sat box. What is this serial port for?

Answer:RS232 on TV

Dunno about the TV. But my Humax Freeview STB has serial connection which can be used for uploading firmware upgrades from PC (after first downloading from Internet). Although the upgrades are available over the air, they are available sooner off the Internet. For this to work, one requires (for my box) what is known as a Null Modem Cable (and, of course, a serial connection on your PC). Cables avaialble on ebay, maplin etc.If you haven't got a serial connection on your PC, you can get a USB to serial adapter. It should all be described in your manual.Maybe the TV can take firmware upgrades in a similar way.

Hi
i bought a cheap usb to rs232 cable of ebay for £2 with a driver disc.

When i connect usb to port the wizard takes over and asks to install disc but then it will not install .
Have downloaded different drivers but it still wont work, drivers are on desktop i think
thought cable was not working so ordered another but same problem.
Am i doing something wrong?

Answer:usb to rs232 problem?

Some manufacturers of converters like this require you to install the driver software before connecting the converter to the computer. I would suggest going into device manager and uninstalling the converter, restart the computer. Hopefully on the driver disk there is a "setup" or "install" utility that can be executed, run this install and after it is done connect the converter to the USB port on the computer and let the New Hardware Wizard do its thing. If this doesn't fix the problem try a different vendors converter.

Hello,I've got a plotter (well, it's a vinyl cutter), which is serial and according to the manual the pin-outs are as follow. It looks to be as if they put '1' for RTS when really they meant '7'. However, that aside, is this a standard straight through cable because TX/RX are not crossed but I thought if it were straight through then 4/6 and 7/8 wouldn't be linked?I'd rather just buy a cable, but this layout is confusing me Thanks for any help in letting me know about this layout.

Answer:Help with 9 pin RS232 pins.

Early serial connector layouts  were defined by the computer maker.  If that was they way they did it, that was the way it worked. Standard layouts became standard later. The layout you show in the picture is not exceptional at all. Here is another almost the same.http://www.diyha.co.uk/electronics/comm1.htmlAnd with photoshttp://www.google.com/search?q=9+pin+serial&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=yHq&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&prmd=ivns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=Sc7LTbDjKZO4sAObjqToBg&ved=0CDIQsAQ&biw=853&bih=372I like this one:

Question: rs232 transmission

I am trying to connect windows xp com 1 to a wire edm machine rs232 port
machine receives in msdos. tried using hyper terminal. Program shows it sends but it is not received by the wire machine.

Answer:rs232 transmission

Hi, You might want to check and see if the machine receiving the data and the computer is set the same. (Data Bits,Parity, Protocol, Speed, Stop Bits, and Handshaking) They have to match on both or it will not work.
What DNC software are you using and what control is on the machine?
I might be able to help you better if I know that.

Question: RS232 problem

This is for the really old hands...

Got this Seiko labelprinter on Com4 (hispeed pci serial card).
My mobo is Asus P5Q3 wifi-ap deluxe.
I am always on a hell of a ride before I get this to work, these are the options shown in device mgr.:
bps 9600...115200 (several tried)
databits 8
parity none
stop bits 1
flow control none/hardware/xon-xoff (think hardware was the control of choice when it at at last worked for prior W7 installs: Beta, RC, W7)
Com 4

Msg "printer communication error".
Only possible setting on the printer is the com port.

Now I can try for days changing this and that and maybe as before it starts to work "just like that", but it is annoying: I had a crash and reinstalled W7 Ultimate.

W7 gives me a choice of two universal drivers, V8 and V10, tried to change to V8 but that doesn't change anything.

Anyone?

Answer:RS232 problem

Normally you don't need to change settings on the port itself. I would look towards a driver issue here (check for drivers for the printer itself that are comparable with W7)

How do I determine if the USB port is actually getting data to/from the system's COM port?

Some info:
- I have Vista Home Premium
- I purchased a Generic USB to RS232 adapter (from China) based on a PL2303 chip.
- The driver that came with the adapter seems to have installed properly.
- I have RealTerm installed.
- I jumpered Tx to Rx plus other pins on the male DB9 connector.
- I sought help from Prolific (re PL2303), but found nothing helpful.

But I don't know how to look for data passing through the adapter. What I type on the keyboard does not show up on the RealTerm screen.
I've worked with RS232 for years, and know about the signal-type on the USB port.
But now I am stumped, and about to cut the vinyl covers of the adapter.

Hi allI am thinking of buying a new lap-top (nothing fancy) but I note that none seem to have an RS232 port any more.I MUST have RS232 because one use of the laptop would be in communicating with all sorts of strange devices that use RS232 (using all sorts of software).I know that USB to RS232 converters exist BUT now to the question:One piece of software I use is Hyperterminal and it "looks" for ports (eg RS232), but as far as I can tell, doesn't see USB (my son's laptop only has USB, and Hyperterminal only comes up with TCP, modem and COM4 (IIRC) which is the infra-red port). And all the other software (i.e. other than Hyperterminal) just seems to find COM1 and then works. Thus, does anyone know how all these RS232 bits of software could find the "port" via USB? Would the USB to RS232 converter cable have software that turns USB into COM1?Has anyone used stuff like Hyperterminal via USB?Thanks for any help.Skeletal

Question: No RS232 support

First, I appologize for this being so long-----I have a laptop I was given to use at work that is dual booted into Windows 98 and XP Professional. The Windows 98 is being used for the DOS architecture only. It is not a full operating system setup. I use this DOS for operating a data acquisition machine. However, this new laptop does not have an RS232 port for the DB9 adapter cable that is on the data machine. What I am trying to do is to use a USB conversion cable as this laptop has many USB ports. I know I need a USB driver for this to work. I went to the adapter's webpage and downloaded the driver for Win98 (as there is no driver support for DOS). Here is my dilemna: being that Win98 is not a full operating system, the driver will not load. Is there some way I can manually place the driver in config.sys and autoexec.bat in the DOS architecture. I have tried many configurations that did not work. Unfortunately this data system has to run in DOS only.

Answer:No RS232 support

No.It would have to be a driver written specifically for DOS to work properly.

Question: RS232 vs. Parallel

While working on a larger problem I found I was not quite sure of the port and cableling names. Is DB-25 RS232 the same as a Parallel port? Also, What is RS422 and RS485.

I know that DB-9 is RS232 and a serial port, so I assume that DB-25 RS232 is simiar to a serial port but I think I may be getting it mixed up with a standard Parallel port as well.

I had found one site but it was too technical for what I need to know. I just want to know an example of it's purpose and what type of connecter they use.

If someone could straighten me out on all this it would help me a lot.

[in case your wondering about the larger problem...it involves Punch Press machines, controls, and a BTR board. It seems most BTR's use a serial (DB9 RS232 connection) but ours uses what I am calling the parallel port]

I have used X10 successfully for many years and controlled my whole house via a CM11A controller. This controller connected to my PC through a serial port and could be easily programmed to change lights etc. Since the old PC died and I have bought a new one there is no serial socket on it. I got a cable adapter recently and installed the driver. After some jigging to get the device to be on COM2 (CM11A only allows 1 - 4) I still can't program the CM11A. The Activehome software fails its communication test to COM2. I downloaded a serial port monitor and it looks like bits are sending. Now I'm stuck! Any ideas out there?

Answer:USB to RS232 cable problems

Look in Properties for COM2 and check the baud rate, parity, number of bits, etc is configured properly. The manual I found says 4800 baud, no parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit.

I have an old trusty 2000VA UPS that has an RS232 communications port and I wonder if there's some way I can get Windows 7 64-bit to see the UPS via a USB converter cable. This UPS does not come with any Windows 7 driver or management software, Is buying a new UPS the only way forward if i want to protect my ASUS Republic of Gamers Core i7-3770K @ 4.6GHz machine?

Answer:UPS USB-to-RS232 Converter and Windows 7

The UPS doesn't have to be connected to the PC via USB or serial to protect it so you can use it as is.

Buy it will likely work for management with a USB to Serial adapter, Windows 7 has built in support for many APC UPS's out of the box. You may also find newer APC software for your model on the APX website.

I have purchased a usb to serial adapter but the drivers are not functional.

Every time I plug the cable inside my computer i get a USB device not recognized message. Under device management > Universal Serial Bus controllers > Unknown Device.

The drivers that i have is called "PL-2303 Driver Installer". Even after installing this driver, I still have no luck. I know it is possible to update the driver but the driver format would have to be in a .INF file. In this case the driver is a .exe file so i have no idea what to do.

Any help would be really greatly appreciated also the drivers are available @ http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?ID=31

If the device is functional and installed, it should be under the COM ports in device manager but like i said before it is not and is listed as "Unknown Device".

Hello All,

As a surveyor, I'm trying to slowly solve all the glitches on my new Windows 8.1 laptop.

1. Mouse

I often visit this NSW government site SIX Maps

When navigating the map, you use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in or out and hold down the left mouse button to pan.

In my new windows 8.1 laptop, the scroll and pan functions won't work.

Iv'e tried 4 different mice and none of them work but they all work on my old XP laptop.

I've also tried 2 browsers (Chrome and IE)

I have also been in touch with the NSW goverment support team to no avail.

Looking in control panel, I couldn't recognise anything that would help.

Does anyone have any ideas?
2. USB to RS232 serial port cable replicator

This cable is used to download/upload information to the survey instrument. It worked fine on Windows XP, but will not work on Windows 8.1. It may be something to do with the port configuration.

Please note that the software is very old and I had to create a virtual XP machine using VMWARE to run it. (As well as some other obsolete software such as XTGOLD and Q.EXE! Any one remember these? I've yet to come across any file editing program to equal Q.EXE)

Hopefully someone will have some ideas otherwise I'll have to go back to the manufacturer and they'll charge more than I paid for the computer!!!

Thanks in advance for your help,

Michael

Answer:Problem with mouse and USB to RS232 cable

Well, I tried the link you provided and I was able to scroll using IE, Logitech Mouse, and Windows 8.1 Pro (64 bit). However, when I first accessed the site, it said that their site would work better with FireFox or Chrome. I have Chrome installed but did not try it.

USB to RS232, which end connects where? Does the USB end connect to the computer or the survey equipment? When running your XP, does it provide an error when you try to connect upload/download data? I would think that your VMWARE and XP will be able to handle everything, but you will need to play with port settings to have everything configured the way it was before. For example, my wife's computer is Windows 8.1 Pro, and I have her run VMWARE and Windows XP so she can use the embroidery module for her sewing machine. The one thing you have to do is to make sure that when you start the VM machine, you must tell the VM machine to use anything plugged into the USB ports to be used in the XP and not the Host machine.

Anyway, don't give up yet and keep poking around you'll find a solution.

Since installing SP3 to my Windows XP Pro system my RS232 serial port no longer works. I have a Hyperpen tablet that has an RS232 connection so it no longer functions. Is there a converter that I can attach to the male RS232 so I can connect via a USB port? I have seen a USB 2.0 to RSB (male) serial adapter dongle but that is of no use. I'd appreciate any suggestions towards resolving this.

Answer:RS232 serial port not working

Have you checked in Device Manager to see if it is working there , or if there any conflicts . It won't have just broken , it must be a software problem as it occurred as you loaded SP3 , it might just need reconfiguring , what does the tablet need in terms of port speed etc. , data bits , flow control etc. ? Hello Techguy
I have a USB to RS232 converter which came with a driver disk. I can load the driver in and everything seems to load OK. However, when I then plug in the converter, it can not find the driver.

What it seems to be looking for is a driver called "USB2.0-SER!". However, the device seems to be a Prolific chip device and I would have expected to see it looking for something like "PL2303" or similar. I searched the computer for a driver with this name but no luck.

I went to the Prolific website and downloaded their driver but that didn't work any better.

I know these devices work as I have seen them working on other computers. How do I get it going?

Check to see if you have a PCI slot. Some newer PC's only have PCIe slots and if they have a PCI slot it is a "bridged" slot to the PCIe bus and many PCI devices will not work or work properly on a bridged PCI slot.

I would check and see what others with that software are using.

I can't get my usb to rs232 cable to install and vista keeps indexing the com port as it trys the next install. I have downloaded the driver, updated the driver, deleted the driver and reloaded the driver to no avail. Now it shows 26 com ports in use and tells me the device I am trying to install is trying to use a display name that is already in use. How do I clear this up so I can install this device?

I have a set of scales that outputs data on rs232. I need to read the data (weight in grams)multiply by a price per gram and output to a rs232 LCD display. Is there an easy way to do this. the scales constantly output and the price per gram has to be adjustable

Answer:RS232 data converter and output

Easy is a relative term. Most scales like that are used in some company or way that demands some software in order to be sold. Look at the makers web site for how they expect you to use the product. We still have many running a DOS app.1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

I have a CyberPower USB to RS232 adapter. From the research I have done this should create a Com Port in my "Device Manager" so that programs
are then able to use it. I have researched this specific device and there are apparently problems with how it works on WIndows 8.1 but I have not been able to find a solution. The driver for the device was installed by WIndows plug-and-play controls. It decided
that the "HID-compliant vendor-defined device" driver version 6.3.9600.16384 was appropriate, however there is no Com Port in the "Device Manager" and instead a "USB Input Device" appears corresponding to the adapter each time
it is plugged in. Under the "Devices and Printers" the "Unspecified" device "CPS RS232 USB Bridge for UPS" shows up.

When I attempt to use drivers from a different source (the manufacturer of the USB to RS232 adapter), the plug-and-play ignore the new drivers and use the ones from above.

How can I get the Com Port created so that I can use the adapter properly?

Is there a way to circumvent the plug-and-play and use the driver from the manufacturer?

Thank you for your help.

Answer:CPS RS232 USB Bridge for UPS - not creating Com Port

Hi,
Regarding current situation, let?s try to manually install the driver by following these steps:

Device manager -> Right click the device and choose update driver -> Browser my computer for driver software -> Let me pick from a list of device driver? -> Have disk -> choose the driver manually to install.

Then let me know whether this device can work fine.
For further troubleshooting, please post back the image for descript more detailed about your issue.

Here is the deal. Where I work we have a ticketmaster application that uses a seperate RS232 network. This means special lines that run to a special little ticketmaster box in my switch room. Needless to say it is a royal PITA when we have to move these computers connected to this special network.

So to fix this I was hoping there were some kind of RS232 to ether net adapters out there. I know they exist, but I think the solution I need is special. i need an Adapter on the PC side that talks to an adapter on the switch side. So basically the flow would go like this:

COM Port --> Convertor Box --> Ethernet --> Converter Box --> Com Port on Special Box

Anyone have any suggestions?

On a box running Server 2003 the application needs to talk out a serial port to an OPTO-22 I/O system. The Optoscan program from the manufacturer works just fine. Our application (which has been used many times before successfully) is not sending or receiving message. It appears that another application has grabbed the port.

Does anyone know how to identify which program is controlling a serial port?

Thanks

Answer:Identify program controlling rs232 port

Portmon is a utility that should be able to tell you the name of the process that is accessing the port: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/processesandthreads/portmon.mspx

I use it at work as a RS-232/RS-422 protocol analyzer.

Hi - here's an idiot question for you. I need to know whether or not my laptop (Dell Inspiron 2200) has something called an RS232 serial port. I think it probably doesn't, as I couldn't find it mentioned in System Information. But I'd like to know for sure before I fork out £30 for a USB adapter, which is what I'm told I'll need if there is no RS232 port. It's needed for a programme called DesignaKnit 7 - details of which can be found at http://www.softbyte.co.uk/dk7.htm, if anyone is interested. So, can anyone tell me how to find out for certain whether or not I have this port? Thanks v much, Helen

Answer:Do I have an RS232 serial port for cable link?

You do not have an RS-232 port on that laptop. Note that the site in question has specific recommendations for the RS-232 <-> USB link device, and I'd pick one of their recommendations: http://www.softbyte.co.uk/usb_conv.htm

Hi;

We have a slitter scorer machine in which tools are placed via servo motors. Servo motor is controlled with servo drive and each servo drive is sent the values of a set of parameters to set a job. The main control system is DOS based which sends the values of parameters to all drives according to job. The data flowing is as MS DOS_RS232 port >>> RS232 to 485 converter >>> parallel connection to all servo Com ports. I want to monitor the data following from MS DOS to drives for which I have arranged another RS232 to 485 converter and connected a wire from TX+ terminal of 1st Comm module to the TX- terminal of 2nd Comm module. If I enable the hyper terminal, I see the data following but un-understandable format.

The format of data following from MSDOS PC to drives is like "7E-BF-02-04-3C-00" in ASCII format. So to read it I downloaded MS “PortMon” software which is used to monitor data following via RS232 port. I have windows XP and when I run the software, “Not Connected” is shown on the top bar. Please help how to make it “Connect” to capture the data. Or if anyone has any other idea to capture the data following, please assist.

Answer:How to capture the data following via RS232 in ASCII format.

If someone guide me about PortMon that how to make it "Connected" it would be enough for me. This time when i run PortMon, "Not Connected" displays at the top write corner.

After several attempts at trying different driver versions, no drivers seem to load now.

These drivers are for a Prolific PL2303 USB to RS232 converter - although I did not buy the device from that company. The drivers used to install easily and I actually had one that partially worked.

At one point, I went to the Windows/System32 and manually deleted all the files and "packages" for those drivers. This likely screwed everything up and I don't know how to recover. I have the option of doing a full system recovery, but it will take days of work to arrive back at the current configuration.

After several attempts to install and uninstall all these drivers again, nothing seems to work. When I plug in the device, Vista looks for the driver in Windows Update and of course finds none. In Device Manager (DM), the annotation for the Port is Unknown device. When I try to manually install the driver through the DM, it fails. The code is sometimes 1 and other times 19.

System Info says I'm running Vista Home Premiun X86-based PC, but the sticker on the laptop says Athlon 64 X2 dual-core (Acer Aspire 4530).

Any fixes?

My M4600 Can not use USB & RS232 Port on Pro2X Docking Station.  This is new to me and in 100% mint condition as it had never been used and only turned on about 3 times.

I can use both DVI monitors attached to station, but can not see any of the USB or RS232 ports on my docking station.  My old M6600 can see them all just fine.

If the M4600 can not utilize the docking station ports, it is bye bye to the M4600.

Do you have some problem with notebook functionality?
Are all ports working well?

Have you installed driver given on driver disk? If I understood it right you need this driver for virtual COM port creation.

Bu the way: which notebook model do you have?

I am thinking to use one PCMCIA card as a RS232 serial port. The program that i need to use is running under DOS and needs two serial ports. My question is what i need to run the program and the serial port to be recognized by the system. I have a 4200 satellite pro series laptop.

Thank you

Answer:PCMCIA card as a RS232 serial port on Satellite Pro 4200

Why on earth should you want that ?
Your laptop has a serial port hasn't it ?

Well for serial ports are standard supported under Windows. In a Dos-box this should be no problem.

But pure Dos could be a problem.
I guess you also need DOS-drivers for your PCMCIA-card...

Hi folks,  After several weeks of research and contemplation, I finally decided to order a P50.  I'm excited for it's forthcoming arrival (hopefully by the end of the week). I had a quick question regarding an SSD install.  I've read several of the threads about it and I just wanted to clarify before it arrives.  I've ordered a 512gb Samsung NVMe M.2 drive from newegg.  I've also already acquired the m.2 mounts/brackets from lenovo. Can I just install the new drive, remove the stock (500gb hd) and do a clean install of windows via a thumb drive/rufus or will I run into trouble with the P50 recognizing it?  I'd rather do a fresh install and not clone them if possible. Thanks for all of the help.  I'm really looking forward to getting this machine configured and operational. The configuration I ended up going with is as follows: - FHD (non-touch)- Xeon/M2000M- 500gb hd (ordered the samsung NVMe and 2tb samsung hd to replace the 500gb hd)- 64gb non-ECC (I was going to upgrade this later but with the discount portal it was way less than aftermarket)- color calibrator (ehh)- backlit keyboard I'll hopefully get a docking station in the near future but need to do a bit more research on that front.

Answer:NVMe Question - Finally ordered a P50 (Thanks for all the advice) - One last, quick question

I did a clean install to a new NVMe drive when I got my P50. I did it with Windows 10 on thumb drive. I didn't even have to enter the product key. It was completely painless. Good luck!

I haven't been on windows 98 or 98SE alot so I was wondeing, If you put a Cd-writer (burner) in a computer with windows 98 or 98se (which I just did) why when ;you go to my computer and right click on the E dirve is there not a recording tab and other tabs like in windows xp, I know the answer will probably be------because your not using XP----------But I was wondering. The one I put in had NERO with it and I like NERO anyway however I would like to know for future purposes.

Why when you go to mycomputer and right click on the E drive (the burner) don't you have the recording tab and the rest like XP. I like doing it that way in XP where you can move all files or copy files and then go to the burner and say write these files to cd.

Does windows 98 or 98SE have this and I am just missing it or is a burning program like NERO or another the only way to use the burning in 98 or 98SE?

Thanks for the help

Answer:Solved: Windows 98 and/or 98SE-question about burning CDs, is there a record tab etc-Question

lol, you answered your own question, windows 95,98,98se,and ME don't support cd burning, except with 3rd party software. When you purchase any of the NT systems (ie: xp, NT 4, Server 2003, 2000 PRO etc...) all have the NT kernel which if you look during your install say " Windows (whatever version) is built on NT technology" and "You now have built in CD burning" soon and perhaps with the upcoming service pack 2, it will start coming with DVD burning capability.

I believe the only windows kernel out that currently supports cd burning is the NT one

Ok so, I've got a Dell Dimension 3000, 2.8GHz Pentium 4, 512mb ram.

I'm adding ram, going to have a total of 2gigs. Did it on crucial and it should work fine.
Now as many of you already know the Dimension 3000 only has PCI video card slots. So, I did some research and found the best possible card for my mobo. (At least I think) The x1550:

Also, what kind of Shaders and Vertex shaders do these have?

Well assuming I'm getting the x1550 how do I determine if the video card is compatible with my monitor? *This is my main concern*

Another question, again assuming I'm getting the x1550, I see the recommended PSU is 420W. Now, my original dell PSU is a 250W. Answer:Big Video card compatiblity question + power question

I am also using Dell Dimension 3000, and I upgraded all Video Card, RAM and PSU already, so I think I can help you a little bit here.

First, which games do you want to play? Because if you want to play newest games, then I'm sorry, you will have to buy a whole new computer. X1550 and 2gb of DDR RAM won't help you anymore.

Second, as far as I know, X1550 is the best for PCI now, but X1300 is really slightly behind. Many people believe they are the same. You can easily buy X1300 from newegg. You bought mine with $20.00 cheaper from eBay, but I guess money is not really your problem anyway.

Third, I have used X1300 and FX5500 and didn't see any problem with Dell Monitor at all. The only thing you need to be careful if you decide to buy X1300 is that there are two kind of X1300. Don't buy the Small Factor version because it is made for special kind of computer, and it won't fit into your case. The one you should buy look like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814129062

Fourth, even though many people suggest that we should only use Dell PSU because the other PSU won't fit into the case, I am actually using this one of Antec: http://reviews.pricegrabber.com/power-supplies/m/601582/
It fits perfectly.
And yes, PSU upgrade is a good idea. I believe my system is working very well, so you should have at least 350W PSU. DON'T buy cheap PSU.

Alright two questions for this post.

First one is I want to know if this CPU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727 is compatible with this motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128416 because the mother board does not support the CPU type ( Phenom II X4) or am I wrong?

next is if that motherboard has integrated graphics, can I still then put a video card on it?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Solved: CPU Compatibility question & Intergrated Graphics question

FRom what i can see the cpu will work with that board, 2nd > yes you can install a video card. What wattage and make is the power supply?

Question... does anybody have any examples of "contracts" or "scope of work" documents they have clients sign when they do a new networking job? Just curious to see some examples... might be looking to get these implimented into our jobs so that if a customer says "hey we were promised xyz" i can turn back to the document and go "no sir you were not, this is what you and your sales person agreed upon"

we run into it a lot where i go on site and a customer has one idea in mind when i was sent there under a completely different intention...

we do CCTV/networking things (structured cabling basically, mostly commercial sometimes residential).

just looking for examples of contracts/scope of work documents i can use to create our own

Answer:Business Question: Scope of Work/Contract Question

In my experience there really isn't a template for a scope of work (I'm usually the one paying vendors & consultants), basically what it boils down to is a line item list of what it is you're going to do with some detail about each part. So perhaps in your example it would read:

Install 1 SuperAwesome-o CCT camera on NW exterior of building, setup scan to cover 100 deg of coverage on parking lot, cable to back-end monitoring system, verify functionality
Install 1 SemiAwesome-o interior CCTV camera above recoptionist desk to cover front entrance. No scan, cable to back-end system and verify

etc, etc, etc...

Hi guys, I'm a huge noob when it comes to networking.

My HTPC is using onboard wired network on an Intel D865perl motherboard. My bedroom computer is using wireless G- both are connected to a Belkin PRE-N router. I transfer my downloaded data from my bedroom to the HTPC downstairs.

Would I get faster transfer/streaming speeds by adding a PRO gigabit 1000 network card?

Would I automatically get faster speeds if I install it, since I read that the gigabit requires a bit of configuration.

Thanks guys!

Answer:Quick Noob question, question on /1000 card...

Gigabit wouldn't help since your bottle neck is your 54Mbps G wireless.

Outlook Express Question:

I just bought a new computer and want to move my spam filters (message rules and blocked senders list) to my new computer. It has taken me two years to build this filter system which has hundreds of rules and blocked senders. It was very effective cutting my spam from about 75-125 messages a day to about 3 or 4 a day.

Jumpdrive question:

I am using a 128 mb jumpdrive to move files from old computer to new. Can I compress this jumpdrive to double it's capacity and if I do is there any downside to doing so?

Thanks for all help offered.

I am looking at ASUS or Gigabyte in the 4 slots of DDR4 2133 or higher flavor.
I was looking at this wikipedia page on motherboards.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1151
B150 looks like an attractive price point for me. We dont use many USB ports.
What does "PCH PCI Express configuration" mean?
B150 - 8 ? 3.0
Q150 - 10 ? 3.0
H170 - 16 ? 3.0

Q170 & Z170 - 20 ? 3.0

Some motherboard specification sheets state (O.C.) meaning its overclocked. So I need to OC the ram in order to get that speed. Other spec sheets just state it without (O.C.) statement.
Gigabyte B150M-D3H GSM w/ DDR3 1600, 7.1 Audio, Gigabit LAN, 2-Way CrossFireX, HDMI, DVI-D, VGA at Memory Express

How long will it take for the i5-6400 (listed below) to get to around the $125 mark?
I was figuring to start with the G4400 then buy the i5-6400 later.

I feel like this is a little dumb, but I haven't been able to really find the answer.

Can I hook up my POE injectors right at my switch in the basement, and just run the output CAT cable from them to my AP's? All documentation seems to read that I need to run my CAT to the approximate destination first, then POE injector at a nearby plug, then a short run to the AP.

Answer:I feel like this is a dumb question - POE injector question

You should be fine to put the poe injector at the switch end as long as your total cable run isn't over 300'

Hi folks / performance gurus

Got an old server 4 HDD storage bays and SSD with Raid 0 -- created 2 arrays of 2 logical HDD's but 4 physical HDD's (1 array 2 X 4TB, 1 array 2 X 3TB) --

Is this better than creating 1 array of all 4 HDD's - I'd lose some space because the arrays have to be the same size.

I'm not too bothered on other issues of RAID 0 -- I want the fastest HDD SPEED I can get out of the system - I've plenty of backups so HDD failure here isn't a primary concern.

SSD is the boot device - works fine -- just need info on setting up these 4 HDD's for the best performnce -- Storage array is set up in BIOS before Windows boots.

Help here appreciated -- I can usually get stuff to work (old Engineer) but don't necessarily have the knowledge to optimize performance.

Cheers
jimbo

Answer:Windows RAID 0 question performance question

What do you need the array speed for if you have an SSD as a boot up drive? If it's just for storage, raid 0 is like putting all your eggs in 1 basket..I know you have backups but having those drives independent of each other will give you less chances of a failure and headache.

I am a very big halo fan! I think it's one of the best FPS games out there! But I have to say that I was really disappointed with the ending of Halo 3. I hope I don't spoil it for anyone, but I figured the game's been out for awhile so I can talk freely about the ending. I didn't quite understand what all happened... Did the Master Chief really die? After I beat it the first time it put me in a bad mood because I love the Halo series and am almost finished reading the books as well and I couldn't believe they would kill off the main character. lol. I'm a nerd yeah. But did they really kill him off? I honestly couldn't tell for sure. May be a dumb question but I figured I would ask. Thanks guys!

Answer:End of Halo 3 question (end of game question.... possible spoiler)

No hes not dead, I believe if you play the game on a certain difficulty (spelling?) then after the credits it shows him again, Im not gonna ruin the ending but ill leave the link for the vid if you wanna see ithttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6fXcr7Arqw]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6fXcr7Arqw

Measure your current PSU, compare with the new one (looks good). They are all pretty much alike size-wise nowadays, and should fit straight in.

Hi all, I was wondering if someone could inform me on what nic.exe, coo.exe, and dnar.exe are and if they are something to raise an eyebrow at. I have them showing up in processes on some of the computers I work on and not on some of the others. I can't seem to find any information on these processes and what their purpose are. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Also on a machine I work on, its an IBM Netvista, the machine comes up w/ an error related to csrss.exe. After some research I learned that this is a name which many hacks will use to disguise programs. I did some checking and in the processes I have two csrss.exe processes running. I can not end either one - I get the message they can't close they are windows blah blah blah's. However, on some of my other machines, my Dell Optiplex GX400 for example only shows up w/ one csrss.exe process. One other thing i noticed is that on the machines that have two csrss.exe processes running, one is running at about 1600k - 3000k and the other approx 180k, making me believe that the 180k one is not supposed to be there, when on my other machines, the csrss.exe process runs approx the same as the 1600k-3000k process on the NetVista. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Okay, I'm buying a new hard drive and I'm looking for the best deal I can find. I have a K8V special edition motherboard and a 120 GB hard drive (Maxtor, not sure if SATA or not). My motherboard can support 2 SATAs but beyond that I don't know how many hard drives I can support. What I'm looking at is a 300GB hard drive "Maxtor 300GB 7200RPG Ultra16 PATA Internal Hard Drive" with 133MB/sec transfer speed. For the same price ($149) I can get a 200GB SATA with 150MB/sec speed. Three questions:

1) What's PATA, and can my motherboard support it?
2) Which hard drive am I better off getting, assuming I can use both?

Next, I recently tried upgrading my Windows (from XP to XP <_< there was a problem with getting SP2). I made it to the point where you have to reset your computer and go from there, but when I did the Windows setup ran into a missing file and couldn't go further. I restarted and had the option of choosing whether I wanna start up in normal XP or in the XP setup, so my original Windows is intact. But now I get that choice whenever I turn my computer on, and I'd like to know how to remove the XP setup as an option for starting up. Thanks for the help guys.

My question is simple.
In the past I have used a OnePlus One, but it lack of ergonomy and it have a lot of problem due to lack of android support and horrible touch screen.
Now i'm evaluating the new Lumia 640 and 640XL.
I'm a photograph and i like smartphone that make very good photos.
I'm near to buy a XL for the better camera (13MP) and Zeiss Lens, but i'm undecided....
- it's too big the 640XL? Is good the ergonomy? Or is better loss some quality of the camera... and go with basic 640?
After some week of OnePlus... i had pain to hand for the bad ergonomy of this phone.
I have tried 640 and 640 XL into a shop, but I think that ergonomy can be tested only in daily use.
What is your suggestion and experience? And if you suggest "basic" 640 i will lost a big amount of quality due to the 8 MP camera?
Thanks!

Answer:A simple question... it's better 640 or the 640XL? Ergonomy and other question

Would you consider a Lumia 830?
The 10 MP, Zeiss Lens, PureView, OIS shooter is very nice. Very nice. It surprises many, including Lumia purists.
The size and feel of the device may be more in line with what you want ergonomically.

Hi i am currently running xp sp3 and was wondering if the fire wall it has built in is good enough or should i download 1 on line? and if so what 1 should i download.

Also a couple of friends of mine were having issues with there computers and the installed cc cleaner on to there computers and it cleaned out there registries and they say that there computer ran better. Now my computer isnt slow but it is not running like when i built it i mean i have done much downloading and stuff so but the loose of speed is not enough for anyone to notice but me. I just want to know is it worth downloading some kind of Registry cleaner or is it not. I have heard that they can mess up your computer so.

Answer:Fire Wall Question and Registry question

As far as firewalls go, I prefer a router. But Ive used zone alarm
in the past, worked pretty well, do a google, there is a free download.

You should have started another thread on the topic of reg cleaners.
I dont use them or recommend them as they can cause more harm
than good. Others will differ. In the future when having 2 questions
please post separately. Thks,,,,

Hi,

I am searching for a solution at a networking problem:

Like a router, where there is a DHCP server on the router,
I need a 12, 16 or 24 port switch that is able to assign specific, preconfigured IP address to each individual port.(ie 192.168.0.1 to port 1 via DHCP protocol, 192.168.0.2 to port2, so if I plug a DHCP client device into port 1, it will get 192.168.0.1 as its address, plug the same device to port2 gets 192.168.0.2)

The switch also needs to be SNMP capable for monitoring, so it's probably going to be a managed switch.

Anyone know of a solution? please let me know.

Answer:Switch question: per-port DHCP question

I don't think you are going to get exactly what you are looking for as I don't think it's possible. The only thing I can think of is to create a VLAN for each port. Then use an IP helper for each VLAN.

Power supply :- OCZ PowerStream 520W
Module size and kit size:-
CPU model and rated speed:-Athlon 64 3200+
Overclocked CPU speed:-
Divider and FSB used:-
Motherboard and revision:-DFI LANPARTY UT NF4-D ATX
Motherboard Bios rev:-
Video card:- eVGA Geforce 6600GT
Operating System:-None yet
CPU and System Cooling:-3 Case fans, mobo fan and cpu fan, gfx card fan
Country:-Canada

I have three case fans, all which have a 3 pin connection that attaches to the motherboard and a 4 pin (same as Hard drive sized power supply connector). The 4 pin connectors have both a male and female end so that they can go inline with another part or could even be daisy chained together. My question is which line of the power supply should these be connected to?

I have a few options, I could connect one or more to the cable the contains a few 4 pin connectors and a 5V/12V power connector at the end for the motherboard or I could daisychain them on the end of a power supply cable marked (VGA/H.D.D). Also do I need both the 3 pin motherboard connector and 4 pin power supply connector, connected or are these two seperate option, which I merely need to choose one of (ie. Motherboard connection OR Power supply 4 pin connection). If so, which is better to choose?)

Answer:Case fan question and other power connections question

If you connect them to your mobo then it will be able to monitor their speeds via the yellow wire. If you connect them to your PSU it doesnt matter which 4 pin molex connector you fit them to as they all join up inside the PSU. Another option is to buy a fan speed controller and plug them into that, the advantage is that you can control the speed and therefore the ammount of noise they produce, the more expensive controllers can also monitor speeds and temperature(s).

Hope that helps. Rik.
