I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have you ensured you are running the latest BIOS? What version BIOS do you currently have? After pressing escape does the computer boot normally?

Hi.  I have a T430s (original owner). At boot-up, I receive a "2101: Detection error on HDD2 (mini sata)", BUT I don't use a Mini SATA!! Windows 10; All drivers current via Lenovo system update (incl. bios 2.69).I have a Crucial SSD drive; I have verified Crucial SSD has latest firmware.I do not have (and have not had) a Mini SATA card installed - this is why the error is so weird to me.I DID recently change the Wifi Switch and cable (which is when the error started showing)The wires that would feed the Mini SSD are still covered with tape from the factory (I forget the colors)I have removed the battery, internal battery and power (and rebooted).  I have reseated the SSD and the DVD drive (and rebooted).I do not have Express software installed; the software that would control the Mini SATA drive (I can't see any "express" software in Add / Remove programs) Can you help me with this annoying mystery?

Disconnect AC power, remove battery pack, wait for a while, then put everything back and try if 2101 disappears.

I got this error out of the blue the other day on startup, and now I get it every time I restart.  I have tried a number of solutions that I found in these forums (which I'll outline below) but it seems like my system just can't find the drive anymore.  Here's what I've done: 1. ran the ExpressCache program via Command Prompt (eccmd.exe -info) and got this error:  "**ERROR** ECCmd Request device is not available"2. unistalled the ExpressCache software, shut down, pulled the battery opened up the memory module slot cover, removed the mSATA drive and then re mounted it.3.  reinstalled ExpressCache4.  I'm trying to reformat the drive, but I am receiving similar errors     a.  When I try to format the drive (eccmd.exe -format) I get the following error:  HFS Volume is not mounted  **ERROR**  ECCmd Requested device is not available     b.  When I try to create a partition (eccmd.exe -partition) I get the following error:  0x10df (4319).  I looked this up and maybe there are system files missing? I have also tried this but it then says "There is NO mSATA detected, please check mSATA attached" http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?DocID=HT073737 If anyone has any advice, please let me know.

Answer:2101 detection on HDD2 (mini sata) error on my T430

Hello and welcome,

None of the symptoms you describe sound to me like software issues. There is something wrong with the mSATA SSD, or the controller that accesses it - or it needs to be re-inserted in its socket.

Is this machine under warranty?  I'd suggest calling support and running this by them.  They may suggest re-seating the device in its socket, or may offer replacement or some other option.  I don't speak for Lenovo, just offering my personal suggestion.

I ordered the mSata mini 128GB card to go into the half size slot under thge keyboard.  However when I boot I get:  "2101: Detection error on HDD2 (Mini SATA)".  I thought that a half size drive would work, as it does it my Lenovo W520.  However it appears the BIOS does not recognize it.  It does however recognize it in my W520. Has anyone else successfully added a second drive internally to the X1 Carbon Touch? http://www.mfactors.com/msata-mini-half-size-sataiii-ssd-128gb-64gb/

Answer:X1 Carbon - "2101: Detection error on HDD2 (Mini SATA)"

Hello and welcome,

No personal experience here, but I do see this note on the page you linked:

Note: Only works with systems with mSATA standard connector. NOT compatible with Mini PCIe slot for WWAN/wireless cards

The way I read the Hardware Maintenance Manual  that slot is WWAN only, not a WWAN/mSATA combo slot.  Could be wrong.

HiIt seems newer drive is needed or its firmware. Chek out SSD manufacturer site for fw update.Since x220 BIOS 1.16 or something like this one, msata SSD error detection has disappeared. Except of rare cases with some Crucial (or Corsair, didn't remember) and Samsung drives. Also do not use OCZ drives.

That error is coming from BIOS, it means there is something wrong detecting the mSATA SSD.  It could point to a hardware problem.  It is definitely not a software problem.  I would call the support line in your country, and ask what they recommend about it.

Model: T450sEquiped as:Intel i54+4GB RAM256GB SSD (M.2) Configured as boot disk running Win 7 x64500GB HDD as additional storage Issue:Seemingly at random, approx once every one to two weeks while PC is on and at the desktop but not actively being used (meaning no user is sitting in front of it performing tasks) it will error and crash.  The error is a black screen with the following error: 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2) Press Esc to continue. According to the user Esc does nothing and the only escape is to long press the physical power button until a power down occurs.  On reboot the system comes up without issue.  No user has actually seen the crash take place.   MY QUESTION(S):1st.  Is this most likely an issue with the T450s not being able to reliably boot from the m.2 slot or is this more likely an issue with the SSD installed in the m.2 slot?2nd.  Is this something altogether different?  Any (knowledgeable) advice or info appreciated.

Answer:T450s Thinkpad - ERROR 2101: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2)

It is hard to diagnose without seeing it, but my experience has been that the Gen4 and later CPUs (like yours) support a very low power state that is incompatible with some devices. (that would make it a problem with the card) Make sure you have the latest BIOS and power manager software installed. Look in the device manager and find the M.2 SSD. There should be a power management tab. Turn off the option to allow the system shut the device off to save energy.

I get the following message when I turn on the laptop: 2101: Detection error on SSD (M.2) The laptop (T560) is new and was only received on the 13 May 2016.  When it occurs I run thediagnostics and can usually get the machine to boot up. However, the error then reoccurs at a later stage, usually if the machine has been idle for a while.  I have lodged a service call with Lenovo but thought I would share my experience here and see if anyone else has the same issue?

Hi, I just received my T430 about 4 days ago and it's working perfectly until I was trying to install important windows updates. As I was rebooting my laptop after the installation (which fails everytime I don't know why), my computer gave me a loud beep and a error code of 2101 detection error. So I searched this forum and found this solution http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT074404 from another post that had the same problem as mine.As i was following the steps,( i did cmd, uninstalled express cache, and did disk managment) but as i went on my disk management i could not find my mSATA. I have a 16 gb mSATA and it was working perfectly fine before. I've noticed on my reboot that it took longer to load and the error message would then come up.So my problem is that I cannot view my mSATA disk on my disk managementThankyou!

Answer:2101 Detection Error: Cannot view my mSATA

The Error 2101: Detection error on HDDx miniSata is a BIOS error. This has nothing to do with the operating system you have installed or any drivers. During the POST, the system does not see the miniSata drive. I (like some others) received my new T530 recently, setup it all up and then a few hours later received this error. The solution is simple. You must open up your ThinkPad. Remove the two keyboard screws and remove the keyboard and RE-SEAT the miniSata drive. There is 1 screw holding the board down. Remove it, re-insert it in. Screw everything back up and voila, no more issue. Go to the Lenovo / ThinkPad Guides and Manuals page for your device (http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/default.page?) and download the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your ThinkPad. There are clear instructions (for those less inclined) on how to remove the keyboard. You do NOT need to disconnect the ribbon cable. Simple / carefully slide the keyboard forward and the miniSata drive will be visible and accessible. You can also use the ExpressCache program to get stats on the miniSata drive and see how it is working. Open a Command Prompt (in Administrator Mode) and issue the command: eccmd -info   -   Display ExpressCache activity informatio eccmd -?   -  Will show you all options eccmd -format   - Will reformat and clear the cache drive. Hopefully, this will help out those out there with this issue. I've read a lot about the 2101 Detection Error of mSATA issue on x220 with mSATA other than intel 310 installed. Last year I purchased a W520 and an Intel 310 mSATA. They worked fine together untill yesterday. I have windows 7 enterprice 64bit installed on the mSATA and linux installed on an SSD. I have a 500GB HDD installed in the ultrabay, as a shared data volume shared by Windows and Linux. Everytime I try to boot windows, it fails. And during the next reboot, the "2101 Detection Error" shows up. To try to solve this problem I have the mSATA reseated and the 2101 error disappears, until I try to boot windows again. Everything works fine IF I ONLY BOOT LINUX. 2101 Detection Error shows up everytime I TRY TO BOOT WINDOWS UP. I've updated the UEFI BIOS to the latest version which is 1.36 but the problem is still there. I've used the lenovo diagnosis tool (bootable usb) to run a set of quick tests and no error detected (except for drive self test either not supported or not passed). Please find the configuration of my laptop below:======================================W520-4270CTOCPU:                                 I7 2720 QMMEMORY:                        16GB (4GB SAMSUNG X 4)VIDEO:                   ... I tried to do some research on your error, but Microsoft has little listed for a code 2101 error. Could you possibly reboot your machine at some point and copy down the error message in its entirety? With more information, we might be able to figure out a fix.

Called Crucial support.   They had me change the Intel 7 AHCI controller driver from Intel to the Standard Microsoft driver.  They suspect that the Intel driver is causing the drive to not shutdown properly.  I'll see how it performs with the generic driver for awhile.

You have a brand new system. You should call tech support and have them resolve it.A support tech can remote into your system and fix it. Also they can check for other issues which may be the cause. This save a lot of time.

Question: x260 Error 2101

I have a X260 with a Samsung 850 EVO SSD installed connected to the normal SATA cable. Recently, the system ran down in hibernate or sleep mode until the battery was completely drained. The next time I started it up, Iwas presented with an immediate error after the logo of "2101 Detection error on SSD(M.2)". Booting into BIOSor UEFI diagnostics doesn't show any options for diagnosing the SSD. What is odd is there is no M.2 SSD. ?Right nowI am traveling and don't have a SATA-USB cable or another drive to try, but is there any possibility this is something other than my SSD failing completely? System does not boot. Things I have tried already: Reseating the SATA cable, Resetting BIO S to default settings, "Power Cycling" the SSD. All checks in UEFI diagnostics pass.

Hi all. I have a 1 month old t450s bought directly from lenovo. Standard HDD and ram, decided to go with the HD+ IPS monitor (very good) and opted out on the 16gb ssd. I've bought a crucial balistic 8gb stick and a Transcend MTS400 128gb ssd m.2. I've installed everything and it was all working well with the eventual 2101 error on boot after resuming from sleep. Since my OS is installed on the SSD I've disabled the sleep mode, because boot time is less than 5 seconds. Anyway, a week ago I've started experiencing random freezes doing regular tasks (browsing, documents...). Yesterday the computer was frozen, I've power cycled it and I was greeted with a 0xc0000225 blue screen (something on the lines of file system not found).I've tried everything, system repair, changing the UEFI settings, reseating the ssd, running the Lenovo bios diagnostics (all green). Nothing works. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi, I just updated BIOS ver. from 1.30 to 1.37. Had no problem with it. The system restarted and got the message that " 2101: Detection error on HDD2 (mini SATA)" This is a Crucial M4 256Gb SSD, which I'm using since 5 month. Changed it back to my old KINGSTON 64GB SSD , and it works. I've downloaded BIOS ver 1.3 , downgraded the system, but the problem still exists. It boots without any problem with the Kingston , but not with the Crucial. Currently I don't have another computer to test the Crucial SSD if it's broken, but I think it's rather BIOS related. Plese advise what to do now, because I had all my work on that SSD.  Regards,Gabor

Hi there, After about month of use I suddenly got an error: "2101: Drive detection error on hdd2 (mini sata)". Simply while browsing the internet system hung up and after reboot the error appeared.I've read that people here had same error just after mounting their SSD's - mine worked fine for few weeks. The problem appeared short time after auto-updating BIOS but not just after flash. 2 or 3 restarts gone smoothly.Strange is that now my BIOS version is still 1.16 when on the web since last Wednesday hangs ver. 1.17 - the update went on Saturday.Any ideas how to avoid sending anything (Laptop and SSD) to RMA? I have already RMA ticket from OCZ but want to save some time and don't want to lose the data.Besides I'm not sure if it isn't issue of the new BIOS from Lenovo. Thanks in advance for any help.Gootchio

So I've read through the history of the msata and the x220 (4286-CTO) and how the BIOS revisions were required during the middle of last year in order to get the Intel 310 and some others to work. Thinking that my little x220 with Bios revision 1.26 (i7, 8gb, 4286-CTO) would be fine, I purchased a Kingston SSDNow mS100 64GB mSATA Internal Solid State Drive SMS100S2/64G and installed it yesterday. The instal went without a hitch, but when I restarted the machine, I received a 2101: Drive detection error on hdd2 (mini sata) error.   I've seen that the 2101 error has been mentioned in relation to a couple of Sandisk msata drives on the forum, but those discussions didn't seem to go anywhere. I just got off my second call with Lenovo support (30 minutes today and 25 minutes last night), only to have them tell me that msata is not supported by my 4286-CTO.  That sounds incorrect, as others with the 4286-CTO seem to have luck with Intel and Renice. What am I doing wrong?  Is this something that another BIOS revision could cure?  At least on one of the sandisk discussions, the OP said that he/she had tested the drive in another computer without a problem, so I don't think it's a problem with the actual drives.   Somebody else mentioned that some drives are not compliant with the JEDEC standard, but that doesn't sound like an explanation to me either.  Thoughts?  Help! Best, sad x220

Answer:2101 Error: X220 with Kingston 64GB msata

I have the same issue with x220.  The mSATA I have is the Sandisk SDSA4DH-064G.  I can also add that the function of the mSATA is the same regardless of whether the mSATA is used in the mSATA slot or on an adapter card in the SATA hard drive bay (Error is 2100 rather than 2101, but the text is the same).  For this reason, I believe the Lenovo BIOS is unable to configure the mSATA drive appropriately.  I imagine that Lenovo could quickly resolve this with a new BIOS. I have tested this drive on a desktop consisting of a Asus P9X79 Deluxe + Intel 3960x running Windows 7, 64-bit.  Device is recognized by BIOS and WIndows Disk Manager.

When I try to boot my W520, I get a BIOS boot up error : "2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)". I am using PNY XLR8 240GB SSD. It worked fine for a month. I also have PGP installed and whole disc encrypted. I installed an update of Intel Management Engine Firmware and Intel Chipset, both are the latest from lenovo site because I was experiencing expreme slowness from my harddrive. Programs would freeze. Webpages would take forever to load..The next time I rebooted, I got the error. If I leave the SSD out for a bit, and put the SSD back in, the disk will work for some time... but on next reboot, it is again detection error.. TRIM is enabled on my system. I am not sure how the SSD died so quickly. I am back to using my HDD but I am not happy. I want a solution... is this a intel chipset issue? Intel IMEI issue? Is  the PNY SSD just a bad model? I've googled plenty and dont really see a solution. Sometimes there is a firmware update.. PNY has no firmware updates for my drive.. I don't see anybody else using PNY on their W520, but plenty of people are experiencing Error 2100 with SSD on their W520.. somethings fishy.. help please! thanks in advance !

Answer:W520: PNY XLR8 240GB SSD with error "2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)"

Hello,
I don't have a ThinkPad W520 or a PNY SSD, but could it be simply that the SSD is coming loose inside the ThinkPad's chassis?  I suppose this could occur if a 7mm high SSD was inserted into a 9.5mm high 2.5" drive bay with a ~2mm spacer to "pad" the unused vertical space.

I've had my T430 for about a year, and other than two Corsair RAM sticks failing my computer has been running smoothly. Last night, my computer suddenly froze up and now it won't recognize my SSD. I'm currently using my stock HDD, but now I can't access any of the data on my SSD. I've tried running the SSD firmware update from the Lenovo site, but it wouldn't show my SSD under the memory devices (I'm not sure if this particular SSD is supported by the firmware update either). I don't think lenovo customer support would help in this situation, since my stock HDD runs fine and I didn't buy the SSD from them, so any help would be appreciated.

Answer:T430 "2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD)" Error on Samsung 830

I have the same problem that I ran into for no reason.  Does anyone have a solution for this?  Luckily I was able to login to safemode once and did my data back up after I could not login to safe mode.  The moment I connect to net work this problem happens.  On a side note I bought this T430S on ebay 3 months back with 16GB Memory, 500GB SSD which was running pretty good.

Hello! First post on this forum but been browsing for some time. My machine: ThinkPad S430, type-model: 3364-5HG, Win 7 x64, 500 GB HGST HDD. My problem is notably similiar to this one: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht082504.The problem occurs on very irregular basis, at times a couple of times a day but other times it goes weeks between the interrupts. It starts with some sort of short mechanical sound from the HDD, similar to the one when you turn the laptop of by pressing and holding the power button (only do this if I absolutely have to, it feels like choking someone with a pillow). After the sound, the screen freezes for a couple of seconds before the short bluescreen mentioned in the link occurs. The rest is as follows by the link above. Basically the only difference is the HDD brand (HGST in my S430 and Samsung in the link). After reboot (with power button during the automated reboot after bluescreen when the error code occurs), the laptop works fine.  It's getting quite annoying when this happens and also the suspension of not knowing when it will happen next is not good for my heart. What to do? Thanks in advance! Regards,Nicholas

Hi, I have a month old T440s. It has the original 256GB SSD drive (didn't open\replace anything). After uninstalling some antivirus software win8 had problems booting. To make a long story short, I tried different things to fix the MBR and eventually got to the point of trying to do a full factory restore, which didn't work (it couldn't find the recovery partition). When I boot up now, I get the "2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)" error.Aside from trying to restore using Lenovo CD (shipped to me, will be here in a couple of days), what else cn be done and what caused this ordeal? I don't mind about the data on the SSD, I just really need my laptop functioning ASAP. Thanks for any advise you may have!

I have an issue with a Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch Windows 8. It has a 512GB SSD. (Believe its Samsung)  Earlier today the computer frooze while saying plug in your charger, so I had to hold down the power button to do a forced shutdown. Upon turning it back on I got this error after hanging on the Lenovo logo for a good five minutes. Error: 2100: Detection error on SSD0 (M.2) The SSD is not visible anywhere not in BIOS or anywhere else. I've tried reseating it however it doesn't help. The BIOS is upto date, any I'm unable to update the SSD Firmware as I cannot get onto Windows as per the instrutions here - http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht082504 1. I cant update firmware for the SSD as I cant get onto Windows2. The BIOS firmware is the latest 3. I've taken the SSD out and put it back in4. Reset BIOS settings5. Disconnected Battery and left it for an hour I'm panicing as all my data is on there, I assumed it was safe as it's SSD.  Please can anyone assist?

Answer:X1 Carbon - SSD Failure? Error 2100: Detection error on SSD0 (M.2)

Sorry for a 2500 GBP laptop I'd expect better really. This is the SECOND X1 Carbon I've had out of 4 to fail me with the SSD. I've lost all my data (Yes I know I should have backed it up) that I'll never be able to recover. Ultimately I've given up on the brand of Lenovo, my company who supplies exclusively Lenovo hardware to our customers are now switching to Dell as a direct result of the lack of support and poor hardware/firmware design. Just ordered 2X Dell XPS 13's as a replacement for my less than 6 month old Lenovo X1 Carbon, never thought it would come to this but the lack of support, knowledge and consitant hardware failures has left me no choice, I can't operate or do my work on an Lenovo X1 Carbon, fingers crossed the Dell will be better as it cant get any worse than Lenovo. To anyone who has Google'd the error and found this thread some cold facts; According to my resources this error can be caused if the system is not shutdown, BSOD or sudden power loss. If it doesn't resolve itself, there is a good chance it wont. Cycle the computer numrous times, let the battery run flat. Try it a few more times. Reset the BIOS, Update the BIOS. Prevention is better than cure, supposedly updating the SSD Firmware might have prevented this from happening in the first place.Lots of reports that this is an issue with BIOS and Firmware issues that result in an early death. I can confirm this having happened twice to me on different generation and model... Read more

I just had a stop error. The system restarted on its own. I found in the system event viewer the following errors:

11/16/2010 4:53:50 system error (102) 1003 N/A computerName
11/16/2010 4:55:53 DCOM None 10010 SYSTEM computerName

I included the mini-dump for this. Mini111610-01.dmp

The only time I've had a stop error in the past was two weeks ago. I got new speakers, simple ones - no software included, and just plugged them in. A few minutes later the system hit a stop error and restarted. I've included that mini-dump. Mini110210-01.dmp

Between these two instances I see the following errors in the log:

system control manager 7000
system control manager 7009
browser 8032
(2) DCOM 10010

The only strange thing I'm doing - besides brazenly switching speakers - is running Virtual Box.

Can anyone give me an idea what's going on?

Answer:Error 1003, stop error, could someone look at my mini-dump?

Is this a system you built yourself or is it one built by the likes of Dell, HP, etc.?

I have an emachines e520 laptop and am trying to go from Ubuntu to XP, however every time i try doing the install, it blue screens and gives me the "STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7AF4524,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)" error.

I have downloaded the drivers and included them into the XP install disk. i made an iso file from the boot disk and then added the drivers to the ISO and then burned it back to a disk. And still no luck. I do press F6 but it still goes to expect it from a floppy drive, which the laptop does not have.

the HDD in the system is a sata drive and Sata mode is set to AHCI in the setup utility of the comptuer.

Help!

Try setting the mode from AHCI to IDE in the BIOS, then boot from the Windows CD.

I was on my computer the other day, And I ran "Disk Cleanup" it took a while to load because it had been so long, but during its load.. My computer got a blue error screen and restarted, when it restarted I got this error screen again just after WinXP loading screen, Safe Mode and "last good configuration" do not work, I get the same result. Sometimes the system is able to get through to the system check before windows starts, It crashes as windows "checking indexing"

I try to reinstall windows, I load up my current sata drives for my hard drive (otherwise windows will not recognize it, of course) ..and setup continues, however.. Once I get to the "repair windows/install windows" option screen, I click either one of them, and they freeze. Install windows will freeze at the "searching for other windows installations" menu, while the repair will freeze as I tell it wich installation I would like to repair. I've tried other versions of the drivers, I've tried different disks. No luck.

Is there any way to get windows working again without erasing the data on my hard drive? (id like to keep my desktop intact, very important file sitting on it right now, but I'll let this go if its a must)

This is all the information I can give right now... Any feedback is appreciated.

Answer:Sudden Windows Error/ Sata Error.

Hi and Welcome to TSF

You might want to verify the integrity of your hard drive before continuing.
Find the manufacturer of your hard drive and run their Hard Drive Diagnostics Utility.

I purchased an X1 Yoga w/ 512 GB SSD / i5 a couple months ago - loved the laptop.  After a week or so using it I started getting random blue screens of death.  Following the BSOD, the laptop sometimes reboots normally, other times displays an error during boot "2101: Detection error on SSD (M.2)."  If this error message is displayed, the laptop won't boot and has to be restarted again.  After restarting anywhere from one to five times, it returns to function normally.   After experiencing the same problem intermittently for a couple weeks, I finally called Lenovo and reported the issue and registered to return the laptop, ordered a brand new one (again X1 Yoga / 512 GB SSD, this time i7).   After waiting a couple weeks for delivery, I received the new laptop a few days and freshly installed all of my software, transferred my data over from the faulty laptop, and got back to work as of yesterday.  Everything seemed fine, but then again today I got a BSOD with the new laptop, and the same SSD error!   I can't find much information about this error via Google search, and only found one or two posts on the forum here referencing it that aren't very helpful.   It seems like this must be a relatively uncommon problem, but I've had it with two independent laptops.  I haven't installed any exotic software or made any customizations to the laptop - it seems unlikely that I am causing this problem myself.  ... Answer:Detection error on SSD (M.2) - X1 Yoga

Does anybody have a clue as to why I would have this SSD detection error issue on two laptops in a row?  The new laptop continues to bluescreen with a "Critical_Process_Died" message once or twice each day, seemingly at random.  It sometimes refuses to boot with the "Detection Error on SSD (M.2)" message.   I'm getting ready to send this second X1 Yoga back to Lenovo in the next few days if I can't find any explanation for this. Any advice from Lenovo?

Hi, TTdeSouza

I did some quick research to see how others have gone about fixing this error. I found this thread here from a Lenovo employee on the same issue. According to the employee, someotherguy, the issue is indicative of a hardware fault. Due to this, I would recommend giving Lenovo Support a call at your earliest convenience.

Hope it helps,

Sounds like you could do with a repair of Internet explorer. Either reinstall it, or if you have IE6, go to add/remove programs and choose to removeIE and you will get an option to repair.

Hi all

I've been testing AVAST 4.2 fairly rigorously on both VISTA X-64 and W7 7100 X-64.

Straight from the MS site I downloaded the .VHD Virtual disks (XP compatability mode)

AVAST reports that the .VHD file contains a "COMPRESSION BOMB". Now this doesn't actually tell me what this is -- but the fact that it reports something with the word BOMB in it means it can't be good.

Now as this VHD file was downloaded from the official Microsoft site I assume it HAS to be OK (or does it - I would imagine MS regularly checks its own websites - there's plenty of people out there who'd jump at a chance of attacking a MS site if they could).

I'm going to download the XP compatability mode again and have another scan.

VISTA again reports the file as CLEAN) so I think there still might be a couple of things AVAST need to fix in W7 when reading compressed or "archive" type files.

I can't post the screenshot -- once I see something with the word "BOMB" in it I immediately WIPE the entire machine. Schnell Fast, Pronto.

Cheers
jimbo

Answer:Avast 4.2 - Error in detection in .VHD file

The Avast forum reports this: A decompression bomb is a file that unpacks to an enormous amount of data - thus "flooding" the unpacking engine. It's quite hard to detect such files reliably, so it's possible that it gives some false alarms ocassionally.

The entire forum is here,
Hope this helps..

I got a new T440s with a standard disk hard drive. My coworker gave me a Crucial SSD 512GB drive to swap in its place. I imaged the current drive on to the SSD and inserted it. Upon boot, before the boot sequence I receive the 2102 error. There is nothing in the SSD2 slot, as we didn't buy this option. The theory in my workplace (tech firm) is that I may have accidentally turned power on while swapping the drive while no drive was in the primary slot. How/where in the bios do I keep the machine from looking into this slot to boot? Currently what happens is the error is thrown and I have to hit escape to boot windows. This is a minor inconvenience, there is no loss of functionality, but when powering up on a dock or rebooting, it requires user presence. Thanks for your help.

Answer:2102: Detection error on SSD2 (M.2)

t440s might have three slots for drives - one sata III 2,5" and two m.2 slots. Usually new laptops with HDD are shipping with cache m.2 SSD which is placed in the 3rd slot. Since error 2102 is msata drive detection related I'd suggest to check out your laptop configuration and remove small SSD since you have primary SSD drive. But at first check out the function of small SSD drive - cache only or/and hibernation partition storage. And disable appropriate features for that drive.

I bought a 120G Crucial M500 mSATA ssd a while back and have been seeing fairly consistent boot errors saying it can't detect the ssd. This is my boot/root drive, and the laptop runs fine for days/weeks at a time without problem. Which is odd, because I can boot off that ssd just fine after pressing escape to ignore the error. Sometimes from a cold boot it doesn't happen, but pretty much 100% of reboots result in that error message. Is there a way to fix this? It's rather annoying to have to babysit the laptop on boot.

Hello and welcome,

Have you checked with Crucial?  I had similar-sounding issues with an M4.  Sometimes the SSD is slow to come on-line due to internal house-keeping work.

Perhaps there's a firmware update or work-around.

Hello all. I've got a user who's T430s just goes to the ThinkPad logo and then after several seconds moves on but never gets to loading Windows. We just get 2100: Detection Error on HHDO. I had another T430s so I swapped drives. Now the T430s that wasn't booting boots fine. So I assumed the hard drive was going but the odd thing is that the 2nd T430s which now has the "problem drive" in it doesn't give me the 2100 error. The catch is the drive is encrypted with BitLocker and no combo of passwords or finger swipes will let us proceed. So my dilemna is I can't tell if this drive is bad because I can't see it. I ran Lenovo Bootable Diagnostics and they said they couldn't scan because it was encrypted. I put the drive in an external dock and connected it to a Windows 10 system and the drive doesn't show up under the Bitlocker to Go section. Is there any way to tell if this drive is completely done? It would be great to get data off of it but I can't seem to find a way. Everything I find seems to require a drive letter and this drive has none. Even booted into a live Ubuntu with the drive in the laptop and it wouldn't see it. Thanks all.

Answer:2100: Detection Error on HHDOcan

A lot of people have had this issue with perfectly good drives, and some have said they resolved it by going into setup, and then saving settings upon exit.   Others have said that by pressing F12, entering the boot menu and selecting the HD will let it boot as well.    Another said that by changing from SATA to Compatibility in the BIOS, restarting and then setting SATA back to AHCI will force a reset of the drive so it will boot too. Not sure if any will work for you, but you might put the drive back in the original system and give it a try (if you have not already anyway). I did see also where Amy_Lenovo posted in the same thread that a fix was found for the X250 ThinkPads, but that it required the system be sent into Lenovo.

Answer:Think Pad X230 HDD Detection Error 2100

I had this with a Crucial M5M mSATA SSD, and the solution was to turn the machine off for 20 minutes with no battery and and no power connected, then try again. The drive failed totally about 2 weeks later though.

Hi,  I need to upgrade the firmware of the SSD and when I put the SSD in Lenovo laptops in ROM mode. I get the following error "2100 Detection Error on HDD0" as disk can't be read.  After this it asks me to press "ESC" to continue. I want it to go to PXE boot when the DISK failure is found as I push OS in the RAM and then treat this disk as secondry (SSD) and then recover it.  My boot order is set as :: SSDPXE  Can some please help how can I avoid getting in the Press ESC to continue and make machine reboot automatically? By the way its 440P lenovo machine I tried this stuff on. Any help is appreciated. Thanks-Vishal

My son is running a PC with XP pro. I ran AVG antivirus and it has detected 3 viruses in a zip file (count.jar-43c66fb6-14c3949a.zip) called BlackBox.class, Verifier.class, and Beyond.class. I tried to follow through on the AVG suggested removal which says if you haven't got Java plug-ins installed you can delete the appropriate file. When I do this it appears to prevent access to the internet. Any advice much appreciated.A bit of further info, on boot up it keeps generating a message that New hardware relating to an Ipod has been found, even though no such item (we don't have one) or infact anything is plugged into any of the ports.I am not sure if the Online gaming that appears to have installed itself in favourites(and cannot be deleted is any connection, it also appears to have installed a browser bar at the bottom of the screen which also I don't appear to be able to remove.

My W530 has just started displaying the detection error, however, Windows can still see the device, as well as the BIOS

Windows shows it as the actual hard drive model.

however, the BIOS shows it as DISK.

does this mean the drive is failing(again), or is it the SATA controller?

Recently I was in the middle of using my laptop when it bluescreened and crashed. Now I'm not proud of this, but for some reason this is not an uncommon sight; I bought this off of eBay a couple months ago and it worked fine for a few days before randomly bluescreening often. Now I tried to change and install all the eight drivers, and while that solved most issues for awhile. But then I received a detection error 2100 main hdd0 on startup. Now I actually fixed it that time, and none of my files seemed to be damaged, which is strange given the nature of the error but I didn't question it. Now however the error is back seemingly inspired and I can't seen to get my laptop to simply boot. I ran the memory test and it passed and I don't even have an ssd so I don't know what the issue is or why it was fixed last time (I changed the SATA to compatability and then back to ahci and reset it). I think it might have to do with a faulty or corroded contact but I have not opened it to check. If it's anything like last time, I'm willing to bet that there is actually nothing wrong with my drive but something is again causing it not to be detected. I do have photos if that will help, but they need to be compressed so for now I hope this will be enough.

Whenever I try to restart my ThinkPad T440s, it takes a very long time to get past the "ThinkPad" screen.  If I hard reboot it while it's stuck here (press and hold the power key, then turn it back on), it loads just fine.  However, if I let it keep going it beeps loudly and angrily and gives me the 2100: Detection error on HDDO (Main HDD) on a black screen with only "Press Esc to continue".  When I press Esc it loads the boot screen, but without access to my hard drive.  If I hard reboot it again, it starts just fine. Any ideas on why it would be doing this, or what I could do to fix it?  It looks like it was a common problem a few years ago, but this is new to me and it doesn't really look like there was a fix back then.  Hoping there's better news now? Any help is appreciated!

Hi, I bought Thinkpad Yoga last year. The Yoga originally came with 512 GB HDD plus 16GB SanDisk SSD. A couple of days ago, I replaced the original HDD with Crucial BX100 SSD (500GB). Since then, I have the 2100 error. It goes like this. When I boot the computer by pressing the power button on the side of the computer, it boots well. About 30 minues later, the computer suddenly loses connection with the newly installed SSD, and shows 2100 error message on black screen. When I press any key (as instructed on the screen), the computer shows Boot Menu. But the Boot Menu lists only ATA HDD1: SANDisk SSD U110 16GB.  When I reinstalled the original HDD, 2100 error didn't happen. But I don't want to use HDD anymore for speed issue.  If anyone solved a similar problem, please help me.  Thanks in advance.- H_Kim.

Good day dear forum members! My brand new X1 Carbon arrived fully loaded......with errors. Right out of the box it hit me with a BSOD (CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED). The system boots from the second attempt, but BSOD pops up every 5-10min. All drivers/BIOS updated. 1TB Samsung nvme ssd (PM961 f/w3L0QCXY7) seems to be using a driver dated 6/21/2006 and so does its "Standard NVM Express Controller". Samsung nvme driver cannot be installed because it claims there's no suitable ssd, Samsung magician doesn't recognize the drive either, however, it is properly identified in the device manager. Any suggestions before I ship this back..? Any help appreciated.

I just bought a W550s, and have just installed all the current windows updates, added my antivirus, office suite, adobe suite, winrar. That's pretty much everything I've done to it so far. Just booted it up after installing most recent windows update. Came up on the black screen "2102 detection error for SSD2" Press ESC to proceed I've had lenovos (Thinkcentres, thinkpads), but never really had these kind of issues. What is the best process to get a hold of support? Nothing wrong with phone support, but I've found myself clicking through the suitable options and being on the phone with a software company that has no real relation to Lenovo, so I'd prefer to at least start a ticket/investigation by email/online.

Answer:W550s: 2102 detection error for SSD2

Hi Lolenick,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per my knowledge the issue is indicating to mSATA drive which will serve as SSD2 and it is giving error. I?d suggest you to look at your laptop configuration and remove small SSD since you have primary SSD drive. But at first check out the function of small SSD drive - cache only or/and hibernation partition storage. And disable appropriate features for that drive.

Hope this helps!!

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

I have a T420 and tried a Crucial M500 but kept getting the 2100 detection error.   I'm wondering if the mSATA version would be OK or if this problem is present on both the main SATA bay as well as the mSATA connection? Has anyone had this error when booting an SSD from the mSATA port? Thanks!

Answer:Has anyone had the 2100: detection error on the mSATA port?

I run a Crucial m4 mSATA 256GB in my T420.

As I mentioned in your other thread, I saw the error once or twice - IIRC on the very first power-up and again after a firmware update.  Once the SSD finished its internal housekeeping, it never happened again.

Hello,I have a Lenovo X1 Carbon 2nd Gen (Type 20A7) and after 14 months of use now, I got the error "2100 detection error on ssd0 (M.2)".I saw different topics about that kind of error and Lenovo really disappointed me -_- (they were different years I wasn't purchasing Lenovo anymore and this has been a sad welcome back).I saw some solutions about the Lenovo X1 Carbon 1st Gen, but I didn't find anything about how to fix it on the 2nd Gen. I read this https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht082504 and I would like to know it there is a way to manually install that firmware without have access to the operating system. I was running Debian 8 on my laptop when that error occurred and I have bunch of important data that I need to recover!I know, it's bad not have a backup and I usually do it, but I never had any problem with any HDD/SSD on all the laptops I had (a lot) and being that an expensive laptop, I couldn't imagine that was gonna happen (and just after 14 months of use). I tried running a live GNU/Linux distro to check if it was able so see the SSD to make a backup, but nothing...I put the SSD in a SATA adapter, connected to different laptops running Windows 7, but nothing. I really hope the SSD is not dead at all. Anyone able to help me? Both about to fix that error and have my system back or recover my data from the SSD that is not recognized/seen on any system.Thanks! p.s: the SSD is a MZNTD512HAGL-000L1

Hi and welcome, X1CarbYuu've linked the proper page regarding issue.Another ones, with details (note, fw package has different file name, I can't confirm whether its content differs from the page in your post):http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-x1-...There is readme file.I searched on the Samsung support site information about the recent fw available, but faced a bit difficulties.Regarding the fw update on the system w/o Windows installed I have the only suggestion to use bootable media like LiveUSB, Windows To Go, WinPE 5.0. Probably fw update tool will work.I'm worry you weren't able to connect SSD to the external laptop. I hope you didn't perform to boot that laptop from current Samsung SSD. Perhaps there was some incompatibility between BIOS, adapter, SSD fw, drivers.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga, with a 256GB SSD and an i5 processor. I received it on April 29. After two weeks of normal use, it crashed and gave this error:?2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD)?I could not get it to boot. I took it to a computer repair shop and they (Lenovo warrantee) replaced the SSD. It worked for about a week, then crashed again, same error. My tech guy said that it might be a bad board, frying hard drives; but Lenovo insisted on replacing the hard drive again. Ten days later, same crash. I unplugged it and put it on a shelf for the weekend, intending to take it back to the shop. Monday morning I plugged it in and it started up normally. It has been working normally for three days, but I am worried about getting the same error and crash. Can you tell me what might be happening, and if there is anything I can do to prevent a recurrence? This seems to be a common problem across many machine models, but I haven't found any solutions to it.

Hi, I bought my P50 like 4 months back and suddenly it has started to throw this error when the machine is starting up."2100: Detection error on SSD1 (M.2)". I have run the tests in BIOS mode and all the tests got passed. I have faced the error 2 times now and after keeping the machine down for few minutes and switching back on resolved the issue. But I can't be sure it will solve the issue next time.Just bit of a background to the error. I have started my machine this morning, and from Windows login screen machine sudddenly restarted saying "DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION". And on the restart I got the error. I do have a feeling that this not related to actual hardware, but firmware etc.  Any ideas would be highly appreciated. Thanks.Jaliya

First, please forgive me. I am a computer noob. I'm not very savvy with computers, so I might need "extra" help.

We have a shared family computer and today, all of a sudden, a window popped up and said something along the lines of, "Hard Drive Detection Error". My wife restarted the computer and everything on the desktop disappeared, none of the programs were in the Startup menu and we have no idea what happened and how to fix this. I've searched and found that others had similar experiences. I'm not sure if my hard drive really is out of commission or if we've contracted a virus.

I'm running Windows XP (sorry not sure which Service Pack). My hard drive is petitioned into 2 parts, Operating System is on the C:\ and everything else (music, games, pics, etc...) is on the E:\. It seems like everything still shows up on the E:\, that's why I believe I may have contracted a virus???

Can someone please help this noob out?

Thanks in advance!

Hi all,i am discovering the same problem as most people here.I have an expensive Yoga Thinkpad 12, about 2000,= euro's in januari 2014, warranty endded in januari 2016, my extra 3rd yr warranty i have bought is missing by Lenovo (i forgot the registration but in the mean time i have send the supportdesk from Lenovo al the documents including pincode from the card) and now they say de extra warranty was canceled and / or credited. Nothing of that. poor service for such a great brand. But now my problem. about 3 weeks ago all of a sudden my SSD stopped and generated this 2100 error. It's a Samsung M27TD256 from the same series as Lenovo mentioned. Because of Lenovo's attitude of not servicing (Oh yes the supportdesk guy said SSD Failure, needs to be replaced for new) i went on to the Internet how to open the machine and without any damage that was no problem. I have a computer repaircentre myself and i tried to replace te Samsung SSD with: a 120 Gb Kingston SSD / a 240 Gb Kingston Fury SSD / an Intel 120 Gb SSD. All brand new, right out of stock, non will work !!!So i took the old original SSD, tested it in another PC and it works perfectly, i could install Win 10 and boot from it.I put it bak in the Yoga... nothing. the 2100 error again. So i thought it would be the mailboard or controller but curious a i am, i took an old 250 Gb harddrive, no SSD and guess what....... Answer:2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD) Where is ...

I had the same problem on a S230U Lenovo Twist. I replaced the MB and the HDD and the HD connector/controller and had the same problem. By accident, as a result of testing I installed the HD without the bracket that holds it in place. Voila it has not failed once since then. It has been running flawlessly for 2 months or more now. I havent bothered to reinstall the bracket since it is running great. There is almost no extra room in the HD compartment so I am not worried about it flopping around. Only thing I can figure is there is some kind of static buildup with the bracket installed. I tried bending the bracket to see if I could make it contact the MB to discarge static if that was the case. No good. Removed the bracket, and it worked immediately. I don't know if that will work for you but it worked for me.

Motherboard: Asus P5N- MX motherboard; BIOS update 903
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Processor
OS: Windows XP

I was trying to install a new CPU and in the middle of that process, I found I needed to update the BIOS. Again this took some time to do but once it was updated, I saw this message:

"The system intruded, chassis opened, or tempered before. Please check the system."

I looked up the issue and did a series of things to mend it.

Checked the manual. According to it, there is no switch in the BIOS itself, only a physical set of pins which by default have a jumper cap over them to short the detector. Upon checking my MB, I found this jumper cap was missing, so I ordered a batch and replaced it. Problem continued.

Reset CMOS. I turned the PC off, removed the battery, then moved the jumper cap to clear CMOS according to the manual. Waited about a minute to be safe before returning the cap to its original position and putting the battery back in. Problem persists.

Updated BIOS again. I'd previously had issues updating the BIOS only to learn the file was not being detected was all. Once that was settled, it was updated and this new issue appeared. After calling ASUS, the rep suggested the first two options I mentioned as well as checking for an even more recent update to the BIOS. I had the most recent one, but I re-updated it anyway. Problem persists.

Check jumper caps. I thought maybe the cap was not secure enough for the short to be detected, so I checke... Read more

Hi, last week I received my new T470; everything fine until yesterday when, after enabling virtualization support when running on battery, I received the infamous "2100: Detection error on HDD0". Power off and on again and the system booted correctly. After a couple of hours I left the pc for ten minutes or so and I wasn't able to wake it up: power light was on but tapping on keys or touchpad didn't wake the laptop up. Power off and a second "2100"; this time turning the pc off and on didn't do the trick... I thought the issue could be related to the virtualization settings I had enabled, so I entered the BIOS and disabled virtualization. Bingo, the pc booted! So, just to be sure that it was the root cause of the problem, I re-enabled it.. but everything went fine!  From then I'm not able to reproduce the issue anymore, but my OCD (and my colleagues, that kept saying I should have bought a Mac) is telling me that I have to fix this. My hard disk is a Toshiba SSD: Model Number: THNSF5256GPUK TOSHIBAFirmware Version: 51025KLA Googling these codes brought me here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/ThinkPad-X270-PCIe-SSD-NVMe-refusing-to-wake-... The fact that my laptop wasn't waking up makes me think the problems could be related; I've seen a lot of posts of people with the same issue, some suggest checking HD connectors, other to change the HD model. This kind of problem is hard to diagnose, but if it were my machine, I would update the BIOS to the latest version and install the newest power management drivers.  I would then boot into the BIOS and load setup defaults.  I would use the machine normally and see if it is stable.

Hi,I got T450s with 500GB HDD which I replaced with 500GB SSD Crucial MX200.After installing Windows 8.1 Pro, turning on bitlocker and restarting machine, I saw black screen with white text: 2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD) usually if I power off laptop and turn it on again, problem gets solved and I can start Windows, but then after restarting computer again the error is usually there again... I've noticed that if I turn off the bitlocker, the problem doesn't appear (at least I wasn't able to encounter it without bitlocker). I saw threads about similar problems with this and other thinkpad models as well as crucial and samsung SSDs, but none was actually reporting that it may be connected with bitlocker functionality... (I can't be 100% sure it is, but so far it looks like it). any idea how I can fix it so that it works also when bitlocker is enabled? Thanks!

Hello. I got this error each time after hard reset, or any non-standard unexpected poweroff."2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD)". I found workaround how to boot: each time in this situation i press F10 to load Diagnostic Utility at boot time, then see error message, press ESC to continue booting into diagnostic utility, and here I already see my hard drive. So just do nothing, quit from utility to restart laptop. And now it see hard drive and boot as usual. BTW, if I boot from USB flash drive, and do hard reset, it throw same error but for m2 SDD instead of sata HDD0. I have stock WDC WD10JPVX-08JC3T5 hard disk and stock SanDisk SSD U110 16GB.Model of laptop Lenovo ThinkPad T440p 20AN0030RT. Answer:2100: Detection error on SSD0 (M.2) -- X1 Carbon 2014

Have the same issue.  Just started happening after ~4 months of use. Have you found any resolution to the error?  Did Lenovo replace your X1?

The BIOS is also up to date so thats out of the question, also its up to date on any other Lenovo update and windows updates.

Hi all,I replaced original HDD on SSD 250 GB and formatted built-in Toshiba SSD-disk 20 GB . On 250 GB SSD installed Windows 8. And after turn on notebook I get "2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD). Press Esc to continue". If press "Esc" then there is boot menu, contain 2 point: ATA HDD2 Toshiba and PCI LAN. But after ALT+CTRL+DEL begins normal loading Windows 8.Any ideas why?

Answer:X240 2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD)

Hi - I've seen this so many times I lost track. I have about 100 X240 with the Samsung 256GB SSD and 100 T440 with the same drives. Periodically they crash and boot to the same error: 2100: Detection error on HDD0. If you reboot a few times it will come back. I suggest dowloading the SSD firwmare: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS034646 If that doesn't work, call it to Lenovo and have them send you a warranty replacement.

I have a w530 with a 512GB Samsung 830 SSD with Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it. 12.7mm SATA III Drive Bay adapter from Lenovo 500GB 7200rpm HDD that came with the laptop in the drive bay. I get the 2102 Detection Error on HDD1 (Ultrabay HDD) on startup before I even have the option to get into BIOS, and the drive cannot be found in BIOS either.  All drivers up to date. No signs of physical damage on any of the ports. This is really frustrating; I have a lot of data on my second drive. Any solutions? I've read pretty much all other posts about this error message and haven't found a solution anywhere.

I found some similar threads (such as this one) but none with an actual diagnosis and resolution. I have a Thinkpad T520 with a 1TB Samsung 840 EVO (an SSD like all the other reports of this problem). It has worked fine for a month then suddenly I am seeing this error on boot.I have the latest BIOS and drive firmware updates as of the time of this writing. The error appears to be "bogus" in that booting from a Linux CD, and from a Windows Recovery CD, the drive is seen just fine, with no errors reported, despite the "detection error" reported by the BIOS. SMART status as reported by Linux shows the drive to be in excellent condition with no error or warning flags: SMART Attributes Data Structure revision number: 1
