Preferred Solution: program does not strat untile i close some other application

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: program does not strat untile i close some other application

Try disabling ZoneAlarm and then see the results.

Hey guys, I get this error after I close any program ie. Interent Explorer, Winamp, Messenger, Soulseek etc.

I have run adware scans, and nothing. Help would be appreciated. Its annoying hitting OK everytime I close a program...

Answer:Application Error after I close any program?

Well I get the exact same error for IE, Msn, Winamp, everything. The number just changes around a bit. I know for sure this is some kind of virus/adware, but havent been able to find a tool that fixes it.

not sure if it's possible in Task Scheduler but i really want it to work. Basically I know how to automatically start program in Task Scheduler and how to also force close it. If we want to force close it we just create a .bat file with text like
TASKKILL /F /IM "nameofprogram.exe"
and schedule to run such file in specific time (for example 2.00.05 PM)

but this doesnt solve my issue because I need to automatically close my program without actually force close it. The above solution only force close the program and it's not what I want. I want to "properly" shut down the app, something like we click "X" in the program manually. Is that possible?

The problem is because I trade in MT4 automatically. if I use the above solution to close it on schedule, when it reopen, any change made to the object list in the MT4 would be deleted as if nothing ever added there. That's why I need a solution to automatically close my MT4 on schedule but not force close it. Any idea guys?

Answer:How To Close (But Not Force Close) Program Automatically On A Schedule

hi guys, after try to find more solution on Google apparently there's a very easy fix!

I should have not used the "/F". it force close the program!

should just go directly TASKILL /IM "nameofprogram.exe"

I have an application that seems to close, however the process is still running.

A way around I thought would be to launch the app from within another vb app using the shell or CreateProcess command.

I already know what the handle id is of the App, so I thought I could wait until the app window closes, then terminate the process.

However, I have got as far as launching the program using a shell command. I have never done any API programming before.

Does anyone know how to do this?

I want to close a shelled application, and I'm sure that there is a one liner to do this, but I cannot seem to find a example. How do I do this?

Answer:close an application vb6

A one liner would have to be:

So I started have this problem yesterday, basically every application I open freezes and does not close even from the task manager, however it does let me minimize it.

I also noticed my McAfee will not perform a scan, it starts it but always says 0 files scanned. I installed Malwsrebytes and ran ta scan in safe mode, problems were found but once I restarted my computer it said unable to find clean up file (or something along the lines of that.

I assume I have some spyware or virus? Any ideas?

Many thanks

Ok I get this error whenever I close any application. Here's an example:

They are not all XPCOM errors. Like when I load EQ2 it updates and when the update window closes I get a error, then when I log in the log in window closes and a error pops up. Same thing happens EVERY fricken time I close an application..
Gah this is so annoying. Anybody have any idea what it could be? Someone told me it was Firefox causing the problems but I call BS on that.
Anywho any help at all would be appreciated...ALOT!!

Edit: Its always says "The instructions at*this always changes* referenced memory at *0x00000000* (that number is always the same) The Memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program.

Answer:Error when I close any application!

First, check out my signature and install those programs, update them, and scan with them.

Second, Windows XP I presume? Do you have all of the windows updates? Service pack 1 or 2? Make sure you have all the latest stuff from Windows Update.

After those, let us know .

I currently use an application called WinTopMost, which prevents users from clicking the "X" to close dos windows. These windows pop up when we run posting procedures. so this prevents a user from aborting a posting before it finishes. Because the software is for non-profits, I'm always looking for a lower cost alternative to what we currently use, which may prove too costly for our customers.

Is there a freeware or group policy that will do the same thing for users who RDP to a Windows2003 R2 server?

Please advise if you need me to supply more information to answer the question.

By the way, that is the absolute best usage agreement I've ever read - simple, to the point, sensible. Loved it.

If there's a better place to have posted this, please advise!

Hi guys!

I have had this strange problem for a few weeks now and so far I can't figure out a solution or why it happens.

When closing an application, the application's service (in the Windows Task Manager) doesn't end with the closing of the application like it should. This is happening with 85% of my applications and they are known apps like Cyberlink Player, Burning software, and others. The Software doesn't hang... it closes normally but it's process is still in the task manager. I can right click and end the process with no problem but it should be ending when I close the software. One program (Edius) won't even open another process without me first ending the first one from the Task Manager Window.

I have checked (with 3rd party software) what other threads these processes might be hooked to, preventing it's ending but all seems normal and there should be no reason that it shouldn't close.

Just a note... I have very good knowledge about computer maintenance (I am a moderator on another Windows 7 forum and solve many problems for many people) and it is very rare that I can't find solutions for almost any problem but this one is a mystery for me and others that I have asked.

Any ideas?

Answer:Application services that won't end on App close

Go to Start and type in msconfig. Then go to Start Up and un check everything except mouse, keyboard, security. Then go to services and in the lower left put a check in Hide All Microsoft Services. Now un-check every thing except security. Reboot and see if that takes care of your problem. You are not stopping these things you are just telling them not to start at boot and run in the background. Those things start and stop when Windows 7 or you tell them to.

I want to have a program (B) close automatically when I quit another program (A).

I have created a .bat file, and it looks like this:

start "" steam://run/220260
start /min "" "C:\Program Files (x86)\Orekaria\Gamers Window Relocator\GamersWindowRelocator" GamersWindowRelocator.exe

What I would like to do it have the "GamersWindowRelocator.exe" (B) quit automatically when I exit/quit the first program (steam://run/220260) (A), witch is a game.

Is this possible in CMD?

Dear People,
I have been having this problem "Application.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." and tried a lot to find appropriate solution through google but no success. I am NOT working with any programming code. I would like to kindly ask if someone could please assist me because I don't see any solution left. Here is the list of what I have already done so far:

1. Checked (scanned) for viruses & malware with the following programs (all of them up to date): avast internet security, spybot search and destroy, adaware, malwarebytes antimalware, drweb cureit, superantispyware.

2. Made sure there are no "bad" entries in the registry with the following programs: abexo, registry booster, ccleaner, pc health advisor.

3. Cleaned all temporary files (cache etc) with the following programs: ccleaner, windows disk cleanup utility.

4. Made sure in the Internet Explorer which is up to date in the Options are both entries, that are related to "script(ing)" ticked which means disabled.

5. Made sure ALL drivers are up to date. I used program DriverScanner program and then I checked also manually.

6. Uninstalled previouns version(s) of .NET Framework and installed 4.0

7. Since im using XP, I updated SP2 to SP3.

8. Tried to reinstall the application(s).

9. Made sure that I have directx drivers that are up to date.

10. Made sure that I have enough RAM to run the application(s).

I really feel like an idiot (but my wife came over and made me feel better -- we're a couple of idiots).

I doubleclicked on an MP4 to play it (from Explorer) and this XBox Video thing came up and played it. Fine, looks like a nice player. But when I stopped it wanted to exit the application -- can't find a way.

Oh, I can switch to ANOTHER application, but how the heck do I close this thing down? Yeah, I could bring up Task Manager and kill it there (I suppose -- haven't even seen if there is still Task Manager, although I assume they would not have gotten rid of that) but there MUST be a simple way to close out an app, right?

(If not I'm going to remove that app and make sure I never accidentally bring it up again).

Answer:How do you close XBox Video application?

Alt-F4 still works, as it always has to close apps. You can also move the mouse pointer to the top of the screen until it turns into a hand, then click and drag the windows down to the bottom of the screen and it will disappear.

Additional methods include moving the mouse pointer the top left corner, until the list of running apps shows up, then right clicking on the one you want to close and choose close. And of course task manager, which is much improved in Windows 8. If you have a touch interface, you can also use a swipe.

You may want to consider getting the free e-book.

Not quite as straight forward as that though.
My PC restarts if I am viewing the media application (WMP, VLAN etc) on the second output of my graphics card and I close it.
For example, I que something up to watch on my monitor (connected via dvi) and drag it to my tv (connected via standard vga) and when I close the media program my PC restarts itself with no error or warning messages. This happens everytime with windows media player and most of the time with other players (including power dvd).

I have looked all over the tasks and don't see foxfire running. So I can't shut it down. Even turning off the computer and turning it back on didn't work, uninstalled foxfire again. Same problem. I am running Windows Vista 32 bit on a Sony Vaio which originally had Windows XP. I can't recall when it started but sometime after upgrading ( whether immediately or not I cant remember ), the red ' x ' button on the top right corner of windows/apps has stopped working in most applications. I have to close with Alt-F4 or use the menu. Likewise I cannot move windows around the screen by grabbing the top bar with the arrow and moving them. Is there a fix for this? I know there's run commands to open applications, like "mspaint" opens Microsoft Paint and "calc" opens the Windows Calculator...

Is there a way I can close down a program by entering a run command? I know that when you are shutting down the computer, or using a program to shut down the computer, if you put "shutdown -a" in Run, then it will discontinue shutting down.

Does this also work for normal programs like IE, Firefox, MSN, Paint, etc. ?

My computers at home and work both run Windows 7. Both have "taskbar buttons" set to "combine when the taskbar is full" (so that if, say, I have 3 open pdf files or Word documents, they default to having a separate location on my taskbar, unless there's no room).

My work computer has something though so that if I mouseover (say) one of three open pdf files, or six open Windows explorer folders, on the taskbar, I can "X" something and all three close.

However at home, doing that will cause all open examples of what I'm mousing over (windows opened by the same application) to show up, and I have to individually "X" out of each one.

That's a bad explanation, but I think it's understood. I'm trying to find how to configure Windows to close all windows associated with one application with a single click, and I'm not finding it.

Answer:How do I close all windows from a single application in one click?

The only way I know of is by using Always Combine, and then right-click the Taskbar button and choose "Close all windows".

Hi all,

I'm using Windows 10 64 bit and have 8GB of RAM on my laptop.

I keep getting a low memory message and a recommendation to close a specific app - usually Photoshop.

I am using MemInfo which displays how much RAM I am using in the Taskbar/tray area - which is usually between 50 and 75%.

I typically have Chrome with about 20 to 30 tabs open, MS Word, and Photoshop open.

It all used to work fine for months, but now recently I've been getting this message a lot and if I choose not to close the app - usually Photoshop - Chrome has started crashing.

Should the 8GB be able to handle all this? Is there a problem with my RAM now?

Any tips?

Hi Guys,
I am running the latest edition of Windows 8.1 and have recently run into some problems. I have the Steam Gaming client installed on my system with a few games, one of which is Team Fortress 2. However, after I close certain games, that might run in fullscreen, and some don't like Minecraft, I can't open any other programs. Not task manager, I can't even shut down my PC. It's not just Steam items. I have a feeling that my problem might reside in RAM issues, however I am not sure. Please provide insight and advice, thanks.

Answer:Windows 8.1 Fails to Run Correctly After Application Close

If I understand correctly, games that run full screen when you close them there is something still taking the whole screen. No task bar or upper portion of the screen is visible and can't even access the Charms Bar to shut down if need be.

I have a few games that do this and I use Ctrl + Alt + Del to access the Task Manager to shut down the process and regain control of my system.

Hi, this just happened yesterday and I have been searching the net for a solution ever since. By the way, my Dell system automatically performed a Windows update on shut down last night so that may be relevent.
The problem is that every time I close a window in explorer I get the following message: "The instruction at 0x01f5b80 referenced memory at 0x018ead58. the memory could not be read. Click ok to terminate the program."

I've ran Norton anti-virus, as-aware, spy bot and Windows beta anti-spyware.

For other's info, I've managed to fix the problem.
I clicked on the tools menu of internet explorer and selected 'internet options', then 'programs'. Then clicked 'manage add ons' and selected 'add ons currently loaded in internet explorer.' Then disabled each program one at a time and tested if the problem occurred (remember that you have to close IE first and then restart.)
Turned out the source was 'solid converter pdf' (a free program from a computer mag) which translates pdf files into rtf or doc for editing.
However, this program has sat quite happily for two months so don't know why it suddenly started causing a problem.
Anyway, everything is now rosy in freddyfeet's computer garden (until next time!)

Just recently this problem has affected me. Whenever I want to install a new program/application on Windows 8 desktop (Ventrilo, Ccleaner, etc.) i asks me for permission and I say yes. Nothing else appears afterwards and I cannot delete the installer(.exe file). If I try to delete it it says it is open [filename].exe. I cannot find it in task manager anywhere and I have checked all tabs. What also makes this interesting is that programs (.exes) that i had on my computer before this started happening work perfectly fine and install without a hitch.

I would appreciate any help regarding this issue and will try to provide any extra information you may need to solve this problem.

I have simply reinstalled this program and cleaned the registry using the freeware program like ?CCleaner?.
Since this procedure everything runs correctly.

I would recommend doing the same ;)

Hi All, I hope somebody can help me...
I decided to create a 'signature' build of my xps15 9560 4K and used the windows Create tool to make a USB stick that enabled me to create a clean version of Windows 10.  This worked perfectly ;)
I then went to the DELL support site and installed latest versions of the following:  Dell Update, INTEL HD Graphics ( , NVIDIA Graphics Card Drivers ( , Premier Colour , Killer Wireless drivers.  This also worked perfectly ;)
My problem is ... when I run the SecondLife / Firestorm Viewer everything is fine but when I close the application the display crashes with lots of different colours appear all over the screen.  I don't get the flicker that some people have talked about and so far no other application has caused this to happen.
I suspect this is a problem with switching graphics cards and/or driver related.  I have deliberately kept the drivers as per latest Dell version.  I have rebuilt the pc several times and tried using a few different drivers but nothing helps.  Before I refreshed the PC the application was OK.
Any Ideas ?  right now my best option is to shutdown the pc without closing the application.

I first noticed it when I opened Outlook 2003 and discovered that there were changes in my tool bar. I customized one of the tool bars, and the changes I made were no longer there. I then redid the changes through the customize tool bar option. The next time I opened Outlook, the changes were not there. I have a program that I have load at startup. The program allows me to have it open minimized in the systems tray upon startup. However, now the program opens on my desktop. I go into settings and check the minimize in systems tray at startup option, and the next time the program starts, my the options are unchecked.

I've done scans for viruses, spyware and malware and my system is clean. I am using Win XP Professional SP2 and have all patches and security updates through 4/26/2006.

Can anyone help me to understand why these changes are not being saved when I close the programs. I'm assuming it's a Windows issue since it is happening in more than one program. I'm guessing it may be a registry issue, but since I'm not sure how changes are saved in Windows, I haven't a clue as to where I should be looking in the registry.

Any help that anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Program changes not saved when I close the program

I'd like to throw some fresh sand onto this ( programs stop working in Windows Vista ) topic, which is ancient but appears to remain unresolved. I've had this same problem nefariously for many a moon now, while it isn't crippling of my computers performance it occurs frequently enough to make me question if perhaps it isn't a worm. I've consulted a series of forums about their respective programs, but after concluding that it isn't exclusively an issue with each individual program in which I encounter this application terminating error I am left to believe that it may indeed be an OS spanning bug.

Personally, I have received exactly the same suggestions for correcting the problem as have been listed here in response to this fellow's on at least half a dozen boards. Remove Norton! They say, this must be a fairly common and frustrating problem, Norton, and while i have no doubt that it's as tyrannical and computer devouring as people say it is it's never been on my system, ever! I'm running an HP Slimline, it's a great machine, with Vista Home Premium. This Error has stopped me from running my recently purchased edition of Avast! 4 Professional Edition's system scanner, a series of other nameless programs, and a handful of relatively unbeefy videogames like Phantasy Star Universe. When prompting windows to "find a solution to the problem" windows quite simply chooses not to, or can't, I can't tell because that's usually where the error prompt dissipates... Read more

Answer:"'Program' has stopped working, Windows will now close the program" Frequent Error

A) Don't bother trying to let Windows find a solution. 99% of the time it won't.

B) I assume 'many a moon' is not 'since new'. It's most likely a driver or app that has been installed and is conflicting with something.

C) Apart from Avast and Phantasy Star Universe, exactly what apps are crashing?

D) Your log doesn't show anything untoward. A few unnecessary start up items though.

E) Are all drivers, Windows Updates etc, up to date?
Check in Event viewer > Custom Views > Administrative events for the application crashes and see if there are any common 'faulting modules' that point to a particular file or files.

I have recently Installed EMET 5.5 on my Windows 7 Professional Operating Sysytem...
I have followed the guide, and imported the 'Popular software.xml'.
So this morning, Outlook was no longer able to open, reporting that:
EMET detected Caller mitigation and will close the application: OUTLOOK.EXE

Caller check failed:
  Application : C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\OUTLOOK.EXE
  User Name : DOMAIN\User
  Session ID : 1
  PID : 0x2A14 (10772)
  TID : 0x2AA0 (10912)
  API Name : kernel32.LoadLibraryExW
  ReturnAddress : 0x7522A271
  CalledAddress : 0x76744925
  TargetAddress : 0x75225020
  StackPtr : 0x009EEA08

I have ended up unticking 'ROP Caller Check' Mitigation technology against outlook.exe to get outlook working again.
Can anyone give me some guidance with further diagnosing this? Or if this is a potential false positive?

I think I may have screwed the pooch.

My Dell Laptop was running fine until about a week go. Then I suddenly started getting errors in multiple applications stating <X application> has encountered a problem and needs to close. The issue is very similar to this thread.

The errors seemed to be limited to applications that were using images. Also when I viewed the error log, the user32.dll file was always referenced. Everytime I reboot, I would get the errors is different apps. I found some references that discussed replacing the user32.dll file and went about do so.

So this is where I may have hosed myself. Basically, instead of hitting F10 during the reboot, I changed my MSCONFIG setting to start in safe mode. This presented 2 new problems. Now, whenever I try to startup, I'm brought to a screen to select my user either Administrator or Dave. I set the Dave user up when I started and never went back to setup the Administrator. No Passwork I have tried works with the admin user. I then tried to startup with the Dave user. As windows is starting, I get the error message and that's as far as I get. My assumption is that the safe mode uses some image to replicate the desktop and it's crashing there.

Now, I'm basically stuck in safe mode without being able to get into windows to change the setting so I can start normally.

So i should also say that I tried to rename user32.dll through windows and that hung on me and I needed to reboot. OK, here&... Read more

Question: Strat-Up

What programmes do I really need at Start-Up?

It's impossible to say as it depends what applications & utilities are installed on your PC, and obviously no two computers will be the same in that respect. Generally speaking, all you need in your startup are those items which were put there when Windows was first installed.

All the third party ones from apps you've installed since can usually be disabled without any problems as disabling them certainly won't stop Windows from running.

Using a utility like Ccleaner you can easily disable a third-party startup item, and just as easily re-enable it if you get an error related to it.

To defeat Alma (red greater fiend), equip the Vigorian Flails. It is recommended that they be completely leveled up. With the Vigorian Flail, you can still hurt Alma greatly even when she is in the air. Note: The shuriken, incendiary shuriken, and bow cannot hurt her; they just bounce off.

Question: Close a program??

Hi folks. Is there any way (keyboard combo preferred) to actually close an application? THanks.

Answer:Close a program??

I assume you mean in new Metro interface.

You can drag the top of the app to the bottom of the screen to close it.

Or you can mouse over to the left, do some gymnastics with the mouse up or down whatever, see the app you want to close, right click on it and click the x. (Something like that. I can't open any Metro apps to check because I have UAC completely disabled.)

Earlier today I tried to access itunes store. Now my itunes window is stuck open on my computer. I've shut down manually, I can't do it from the windows menu. When the computer reboots, it's right there on the screen. I can't ctrl + alt + delete... nothing happens. I can't left click in the task bar and close that way... nothing happens. I can't move it, minimize it...

It's not affecting anything I'm not really concerned yet, but I can't get gone! If you have any ideas, let me know.

I have windows 7 on a Toshiba Satellite

Answer:can't close program!

Look for the appropriate iTunes process:

When you've determined whick process it is, kill it:

Click Start > Programs > Accessories > right-click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window, type Taskkill /IM your iTune process /F

Press Enter.
When done, restart the computer and see if iTunes is opening again. If it is,

1- Please click HERE to download HijackThis.
2- Run the program.
3- Click on the Main Menu button if not already there.
4- Select Do a system scan and save a logfile.
5- Copy and paste the scan log from Notepad into your next reply.
6- Do not "Fix" anything unless advised to do so.

For Windows 7 and Vista:

If Windows is denying access to the Hosts file, be sure to run HijackThis as Administrator or disable the UAC first.

My Windows 2000 system generally runs quite well. Now and then, however, a program [not always the same one] will hang up. When that happens and I try to use the Task Manager to close it, I sometimes get the following message "This program cannot be closed. If it is being debugged, please resume it or close the debugger first." If a debugger is running, it's not because I started it. I have no idea how to start a debugger in Windows 2000. If I repeatedly click "Cancel" the error messages usually go away and the program is closed. Sometimes, however, I have to reboot. Can anyone tell me how to prevent this from happening?

I have a SA60-332 and it is very slow at start-up. I bought the notebook in August 2004 with Windows XP Home edition installed. I have scanned the disk, used the defragmenter, and scanned for virus but it seems that there is no problem. The computer seems to take ages at start up after login and once all programs are loaded it works fine.
Does anybody know what to do to make it faster?
Thank you and happy New Year.

Answer:SA60-332 too slow at strat-up

Hi mitsou,

There are few possibilities to make boot-up process faster. I make always the following steps:

1. check what you have selected to load on startup...
? click start > run
? type msconfig > ok
? navigate to the startup tab and remove the 'tick' from the boxes of programs that you do not require to run on startup. some of these could be causing a long loading time

2. Disable all hardware components in Device Manager which you don`t need (e.g. Modem, SD Card Controller)

If this doesn?t work then let us know.:)

This is a strange issue only in Win8.1.

As we all known, if there is a running application in a machine, there should not be any other behavior against the application when we connect/disconnect/reconnect to this machine by Remote Desktop Connection. However, we found that Win8.1 will
fire unload and load events to the WPF application when we close and reconnect to the machine using RDC. And this is an unwanted behavior which may cause error. Here are the stable reproduce steps:

1. Write a WPF application which contains a button and handles the unload and load events of this button.
2. Using RDC to connect to a Win8.1 from Win7 for example.
3. In the remote desktop, run this WPF app.(a load event will be recorded in a.txt).
4. Close the RDC by clicking the 'x'.
5. Connect to this Win8.1 again.
6. You will see the unload and load events have been fired.

If the WPF app runs in Win7 or Win server 2008, those events will not be fired.

So, I think it is a unwanted behavior in Win8.1. Is that a bug in Win8.1 RDP? Or is that a new feature? I'm looking forward the answer.

A rain of problems landed at my doorstep which I hope all stem from 1 bad thing.

random programs close themselves seconds after being launched (like starcraft in update screen or installer, adobe shockwave installer and updater). in addition IE8 is on the fritz has when I open it it repeatedly "recovers" a tab over and over around 10 times until it closes (not crashes as no event log was found), microsoft visual studio 2010 closes on new project creation.

Alone, each of these problems have an answer in google but i tried them all with no avail. I ccleaner my reg, made sure my kaspersky and malwarebytes are up to date (nothing detected).
I would love some advice on where to go with this
(If it is the wrong forum, please move the thread)

My main problem is programs closing on start without error which is what i'd like to solve

I'm not sure whether this is the right place to ask, but if it is, please help me.

I'm using one of Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.5 component, Classic Creator.
What confuses me is that after I close the program, it is still running in the
background. I realised that when I accessed the Task Manager,
'creator7.exe' is still running. And it's eating up my RAM up to 30 MB at one point. So I clicked 'End Process' and it's gone.

My question is, is there any way to tweak the registry or something
so that when I close the program, it will be closed properly and not
running in the background and eating up my RAM.

Answer:Program still running after i close it

Restart your computer and without opening the Roxio program see if it's still running in the background. If it is it's running at start up.

Go to Start/Run, type 'msconfig' in the Run box and click OK to open the System Configuration Utility. Choose the Startup tab. Scroll down the list and find the Roxio application. Uncheck the box next to it. Restart. That will stop Roxio from loading at start up.

For a couple of years my computer was running Windows 98 SE. When it said to close all programs one could hit the control, Alt.,delete combo and it would show all programs that were running and 1 by 1 it was possible to close them. As I remember, I would highlight a program and click on end program now and that was it.(I always left sys. tray & explorer alone)
Well now running Windows 2000 Professional, and when I click on control, Alt. and Delete, I get this totally different screen. It has a task mgr., lock computer, shut down, log off,etc.,etc. I have asked a few friends around my little area and no one seems to know. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
My computer is a Gateway 550PC,Intel 550MHz Pentium III Processor; 128 MB Memory Module; 16 MB AGP Graphics Card; Fat 32 for Windows 95 or 98(download only);20GB 7200RPM UATA Hard Drive;8x/32x DVD ROM Drive;software DVD; 3.5 1.44 MB Floppy Diskette Drive; 56K PCI Voice Modem; came with Norton anti-virus software- that's it. This, as you can see, is a real old computer, but it does most of what I need and nothing that I would really love to get into.
Thanks again for your time and assistance and I hope to hear from you guys soon.

I was just wondering why this keeps happening to me. Once I'm on the net for a while and my computer is idle I get a message that says a prg needs to close becuase it encountered a problem. I'm running windows xp I have a dell dimension P4. The message I get is "Generic host process for Win32 services" needs to close. This has been happening for bout three days. After that happens my computer still functions but I'm online meaning I'm connected but when i try to go to any website it says page not avail. and also my msn shuts down.. I did a virus scan using Avast cause that is what i have right now and it says everything is fine. So what I wanna know is why this is happening and what can I do to fix it? I'm not sure if it happens always at the same time or not... After i restart my computer is is ok. The net works and msn works until that specific process needs to end. any suggestions would be helpfull. Thanks in advance...

FROM OP: Solved problem - had program set to not required to sign-in so i guess that meant it stayed open ...unchecked and now Outlook will close out - sorry for the inconvenience - Edythe

Win 8 - i know this is not really a Windows situation but thought i'd ask if you didn't mind: I have an Outlook email program but can't get it to 'close-out' while my PC is booted up... even when i shut-down the PC , reboot - it's still 'open' when i launch it again frm the Taskbar Icon ... i repeatedly try to sign-out where the official area is for Outlook (my name-''sign-out'') nothing is working ... appreciate any suggestions because i read it's not a good idea to have an email program 'running' while doing other things on the computer ..... thanks so much edythe

as lame as arcsoft photostudio 5.5 is, i have files saved in that format that i want to get to and .. as soon as the program begins to load, the windows error says 'sorry this program has encountered a problem and needs to close' message appears. it doesnt allow arcsoft to load, just that initial loading pic is as far as i can get it....i figured i had deleted some system files for it or something, so i loaded another, however different, version (well the startup pic is not the same as the one for photostudio that came with computer) .... am i right in thinking the system reg is 'stuffed up' ? Is it any way possible that other programs/codecs could be interferring with it ? any takers ???????

Answer:why program 'sorry has to close' every time?

So did the installation of the newer version take care of the problem or not? If the files created with the application are standard image formats like gif, jpg, etc. you can use any image editing program to access and edit them.

I'm not sure what happened, but no matter what program I am running, (IE, Task Manager, AVG, Registry Tools, Ad-Aware) I can't close the program by clicking on the "x" nor can I close it from Task Manager: once I click on the "x" it doesn't close, and it doesn't show up in Task Manager! If I go to Task Manager and try to close it from there before clicking on the "x" it shows up, but does not close when I click "End Process". The only way to close anything is to restart the computer..... I can open multiple windows, but can't close them once I open them.....

Has anyone ever had a problem like this?

All this started when I was tweaking my desktop, and went to move my daughter's "Blue's Clue's" icon to a folder on the taskbar. This game gave us problems once before, and I promptly un-installed it, and ran Reg cleaners to clear things out. Not sure what other details to give, as I was doing all sorts of tweaking on the desktop, moving "My Pictures" and other stuff.

My Specs:
Windows 2000 Professional
AMD Athlon 1.33
512 DDR
40 Gig Hard Drive
Nvidia GeForce 2 64 MB

Thanks in advance!

When I use CAD, and my close program {end task} comes up there is a" tpnvram" program in there and when I click to end it, it's always not responding! I have done a search but it's not on my C drive. I use w95. Anyone know how to find it so I can get rid of it? It's not in my programs either. Thanks

Answer:Solved: close program

Not much info around on that application, apart from it being a TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) program, that stays active in RAM only.

The name suggests that its something to do with Non Volatile Ram, and being a TSR will be part of an anti-virus or firewall type application at a guess (but it is a complete guess)

HI All, My latest problem started with a desire to install the software for my Agfa ephoto Cl 18 digital camera. We could not get the computer to suck the images out of the camera via the USB cable. Agfa spent a lot of time with us on the telephone and the last resort was 3 pages of instructions to uninstall everything to do with the camera and then reinstall. We did all That but the camera still did not work so Agfa said they would give us a new one. Meanwhile I bought a printer but could not get that to work either so I took it to a technician who found there was a virus affecting the USB and eliminated it and now the printer works. So I thought well maybe the camera works too, though I had taken the camera to a camera to a camera shop and their computer could not get any pictures from the camera. Still I went through Agfa's uninstall thing again and this time when I got to the part where we start installing the software cleanly, the instructions tell me to press CTRL, ALT, and DELETE keys at the same time this should bring up a Close Program box, well it did and I closed one program of the several they want me to close [ they want me to close all operations untill only Explorer and Systray are showing] but after I closed the first application I could not get back to close the rest and that is where I'm at. Thank you in advance. Schnaz

Hello Guys,
I am using windows xp professional. When I boot the computer I do not get desktop but a strange screen that says "Administrator has 1 program running".
This running program is not evident to me on the screen.
Does anyone know how I can locate this running program, close it out and revert back to my original screen?
I am not an experienced user. Thank you....

Answer:How To Close A Running Program...

Well, that's a bit weird, but do a ctrl-alt-del to open up the Task Manager.

Select the Processes tab and look for processes with a User Name, you can end anything there with a user name, but leave Explorer.exe. You can also check the "applications" tab to see if it is there.

Another option is to boot in Safe Mode, (press the f8 key promptly on startup and select from the boot menu). Once in Safe Mode run msconfig and select the startup tab. Look for likely suspects there. You can uncheck anything in that group for test purposes.

When did this problem begin, by the way, and are you the only user? Does your User Account have Administrative rights?

Are you sure this appears after a complete shutdown, and not a return from standby?

Could this be the login screen described here?

SpywareBlaster 3.4
AdAware SE 1.06 - * NEW *
SpyBot V1.4 * NEW *
MS AntiSpy - (XP and W2K only)

DL them (they are free), install them, check each for their
definition updates and then run AdAware and Spybot, fixing anything
they say.

In SpywareBlaster - Always enable all protection after updates
In SpyBot - After an update run immunize

Do these and reboot before the next step.

Then get HiJack This V1.99.1 - double click the DL file
And let it extract to its default folder C:\Program FIles\HiJackThis, run it from there, DO NOT fix anything, post the log here.

I hope you can help me here. I've search all over the Internet & on various forums trying to solve this problem for over a month now. I'm losing my hair over this!

I am trying to completely uninstall an older, outdated version of a software program and then install the newest, updated version, but it seems not everything is getting uninstalled (specifically the .junique folder containing 2 LOCK files - which is mainly intended to prevent a user from running simultaneous instances of the same Java application). This folder is apparently preventing the newly installed version from executing properly. (The program requires Java to run.)

The software application does not appear in Add or Remove Programs because it is a stand alone (.exe) program that is sitting on my Desktop. I've killed the process using the Task Manager, but when I try to open the newer version, it shows "[Program name] already running" & will not open. But it is NOT in the Task Manager at that point! No matter how many times I delete the previous version & install the new version, this same thing happens.

I have used RevoUninstaller to uninstall Java (& all the remnants bits it left on my computer), but still no luck. (Btw, RevoUninstaller does not see this software application so I cannot uninstall it using RevoUninstaller.)

Any help with this is GREATLY appreciated!

P.S. The software developers say the problem is only happening on my computer out of the thousands of others ... Read more

Whenever I open anything on my desktop, I cannot minimize, maximize, or close them. I have run System Mechanic, PC Health, Microsoft Security Essentials, Ad-Aware, and Restore Point. Nothing has helped where I can click on the upper right of each program and get them to respond. Even in safe mode, the Windows Help and Support comes up on What is Safe Mode. The buttons on the top right do not respond when clicked and the X button is grayed out. In the task bar, I cannot right click the open program and get anything. This happens is safe mode or regular start up. What can I do to fix this? I am running a HP Pavilion Slimline s3100ct, Vista Home Premium OEMAct.

Answer:Any program opened, cannot min., max., or close

Try Malwarebytes antimalware scan.

If that doesn't work you might try here:
HP Business Support Center

It says "business support center" but it's not paid. It's volunteers like here. They just all have HP PCs.

Answer:BSOD right after I close same program

Hi and Welcome to TSF

BSOD can be caused by many things, old software, bad drivers, old drivers, and hardware failing

It is really hard to understand the bsod when the fault its pointing to is NTOSkrnl.exe but since you have updated the drivers and other things lets try this

Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue.
Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.
In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.
Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password.
Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32
You will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file type Y and press enter to overwrite the file.
Type exit to reboot the computer.

"* has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
I've had a dozen or more of these messages with various programs since Win7 first launched.
My question: Has anyone who has had a problem with a program and had this message appear ever been notified of a solution? I know I haven't!

Answer:...Windows will close the program...

Nope me neither.
A couple of times it has recommended to update graphics drivers even though I was already using the very latest ones...
It's a complete waste of time.
