Preferred Solution: cant install windows xp to save my life

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

At first I was trying to lay it down to the first partition on my hda, which I had done via Partition Magician 6.0. After having tried several different ways and flopping miserably everytime, I decided to format my entire hard drive and take it from there. Only I formatted with FDISK cuz everybody tells me Partition Magician is crap, blah blah blah, I should be doing it with good ol' FDISK.... So I did.
Formatted in FAT16, the installation process goes smoothly, until I get to the part right before the first reboot. I answer all the questions (machine name, company name, PDC, etc) then I get to the part where it tells me it'll reboot, but before it does, I get a very unfriendly looking blue screen with about a million lines of code on it and a message at the end that look something like this 00000000 00000008 68549403 blahblah.exe and there are colums of just this gibberish, and the very bottom of the screen, something about telling me to try rebooting with /CRASHDEBUG.EXE or something like that, that if I got this screen again to contact my network tech (myself...) and to go right ahead and reboot. I do, at which point, it starts the whole installation process again. I must have reinstalled that sucker close to ten times yesterday, always to end up with that annoying blue screen at the end. Help.

When you go into Windows Explorer (right-click Start button, then hit "Explore") and click on the drive in the left panel, do the files you wish to open on the CD appear in the right panel? If so - can you drag/drop them to, say, your desktop and open them from there? Or are they not even appearing in Explorer?

Have some serious problems here folks and need urgent help.My XP Home machine was working just fine today when I received a "Java Update Available" message and a little instal icon on the bar at the foot of my desktop.I clicked on it to instal and it eventually claimed instal had finished.I then closed down the PC, had luck, went back to switch on and I can't get it to boot up. It boots initially to the message that it hadn't shut down properly last time (which is wrong because it did !) and, when I click on boot as normal, it runs through to the Windows splash screen with blue loading bar and then, just as the various account logon icons should appear, it goes black for about three seconds and then reboots.I tried selecting "last known good conig" but same result.I tried "safe mode" but it just scrolls through a load of file names and then reboots again.I don't have a boot floppy but I do have an XP CD from another machine. I booted via that and clicked on "R" for recovery console but that doesn't appear to go anywhere. It asks what I want to logon to, I select "2. C:/WINDOWS" and it just sits there with a command line prompt of C:/WINDOWS ...... am I supposed to do something ?I did try typing "fixboot" but that hasn't changed anything. The machine has two hard drives (C: and G:) and, above all else, I desperately need to access the data on G: drive. Can somebody tell me how I can get into Windows and lower my stress levels ?!!!

Answer:Please save my life !!!

What other options does it give you when you click on "R"?

My brother tried installing the original Half-Life [yes the ancient one back from 1998] on our new computer which runs Windows XP without success. After putting in the CD [a store bought copy from EB] & clicking install, nothing else comes up so there's not much we can do in terms of troubleshooting since it won't even attempt to install.

The game installed without a problem on our other computer that runs Windows 98. To make sure that it wasn't a defective CD, I reinstalled it on our old computer today with no problems once again.

We've gone to a bunch of Half-Life/Sierra related web sites/forums & couldn't find a definitive solution. Some people said it runs on XP, others have the same problem we do. The company said there wasn't really much we could do about it. Anyone know if there is a way to get the game to work properly on XP or is it a lost cause? Thanks in advance.

hello. i just had a question about converting from fat32 to ntfs.

i'd really like to do this, and PARANOIA aside, (from losing data) the only other worry is deciding which of my two drives to convert first.

i remember reading somewhere, that NON ntfs file systems cannot see NTFS drives or what not. like a fat drive cannot read/see a ntfs drive. but i dont know if this is the same the other way. (a ntfs drive cannot/can see a fat32 drive or even access it or whatnot) i dont know. i'd like to know.

and so, i was wondering, with this in mind, when i do convert, which drive should i convert first? my boot drive. or my slave drive?

my computer specs are in my signature. check em out.

basically what i'm trying to avoid is, converting one of the drives, and then not being able to convert the other cause i can't see it. and definatley i want to avoide losing ANY data at all. i'd love to format first, but i can't. not really an option. i have too much "junk" in my drives that would take me up to 10 hours simply to back up. label, reinstall, bladiblah. omg just thinking about it makes my head hurt. but yeh that's pretty much it.

also. i'd like to know how long it would take to convert completley. and i'd also like to know what YOU think, are one of the MOST IMPORTANT things to backup JUST IN CASE, before i convert. i have a few things already, like my favorites list, my personal files but i dont know what else. how can i bac... I just installed windows 7 on a laptop (around a year and a half old) which with windows vista got around an hour and a half, which was perfect for me (about a lecture's worth of battery), the battery life dropped to about half an hour and the indicator was telling me that there was something wrong with the battery, giving a 'consider replacing the battery' message.

I wonder if it is a genuine problem, or just a software issue (MS deny any problems, but tbh I'm not so sure). I haven't tried anything else, like a linux distro or something, but I wondered if something like that would show up any problems if they existed?

Answer:Windows 7 install battery life indicator

Have you tried adjusting the power settings? Make sure they are not set for performance?

My wife has been complaining for weeks that her PC had been running very hot and making "noises" when booting up .

As a male does, you naturally ignore them - BIG MISTAKE!!!

Now on boot up it comes up with the fascinating message "Windows cannot read the operating system"

I have done all the sensible things like bashing the casing, dropping the deck, looking at it and pleading for the Deity of PC's to make it work - all to no avail.

I can get the PC to boot from the Windows Setup disc but it also comes with the message "that disc (C)" cannot be read from windows and therefore press ESC to abort the installation procedure and tell your wife she has lost everything - as in the lot!!

In the hope that successive reboots would somehow make it work, it did on one occasion come up with a different screen that "the following boot sectors were unreadable" - like about 141,000 and still counting. I fear that was not a good sign!

She has an extra backup HDD (E) that will let me reinstall Windows on that disc but this will not really solve the problem as if C Drive is stuffed then all the good gear is gorn anyway.

Is there any command like "please oh God fix this" or "I'm really a good person" I can type in that will fix it?

Highly skilled in PC hardware, I will pull all the cables of the HDD and push 'em back in again in the hope that is the problem.

But I just know someone here has a better answer.... Read more

Hello! Right now you will find out how to improve your laptops battery life! This can be done with nearly every laptop!

FIRST!!!!
Number one! You should go under your battery settings on the task-bar (If you're running windows xp and up, I believe) and make sure you select power saver mode.
-This will lower your computers abilities and standards
-This will lower your computer screen brightness (unless you change it)
-This will also make your computer slower but it will save you battery life!

SECOND!!!!
Number two! You should turn your computer on airplane mode (If your computer can do that) because most laptops automatically search for open and/or closed networks to connect to, and its just easier on the laptop, it being it doesn't search over and over again...

THIRD!!!!
Number three! IF YOU ARE TRYING TO SAVE BATTERY LIFE, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BACK-LIT KEYBOARD OFF (If your laptop has that installed) AND YOU SHOULD ALWAYS ONLY HAVE TWO LOW POWER CONSUMING APPS OPEN AT ONCE MAX.(This will help out a lot)AND LASTLY, SET YOUR SCREEN TO A LOWER BRIGHTNESS, THIS WILL HELP YOU A LOT!!!

This has been driving me absolutely insane lately. I have been trying to setup a LAN for my brother in law. For some reason his computer will connect to the internet directly through the modem but not through a router. I have tried 2 different routers (the blue linksys everyone has and a d-link model) and also tried a new NIC. Nothing seems to work for this computer. When I connect to the router via wireless on my laptop everything works fine. Also when I connect any other computer via hardwire it works fine. But not this one. This is also a clean install of windows XP on the machine.

At this point any ideas would help.

The routers are setup for DHCP Addressing and the computer is setup to Auto configure the IP.

Answer:Cannot connect to router to save my life

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

What country are you located in.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?

If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands:

PING 216.109.112.135

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Hi

I have an IBM Thinkpad 600e, with windows XP Home installed on it.

I am very happy with it. While tinkering about I accidently deleted 'ntldr' file. Then i turned machine off. Of course now I can't get into windows, it keeps coming up:

ntldr file missing
press ctlr+alt+del to restart

I have restarted inserting the XP cd it asks me to "press any key to boot from cd" so I do. Then it asks for an administrators password. But I have not got one, I don't know it!

I have tried booting with xp setup boot floppies but still it comes to the same end.

I have another laptop exactly the same, my mothers, and have gone into the bios to see if i can see the administration password in there but it is blank. Hoping it may be the same.

Please, please please somebody help me, I'm so frustrated. I have work on the computer and, yes I'm a naughty girl I did not back up this work. If i have to reformat then so be it. But isn't there something I can do. I have backed up but i think i may have overwritten cos I cannot find it.

Answer:Hello everyone, good to be here and hopefully, someone can save my life by helping me

Use a boot-floppy from e.g. w98 (get one here if you need it, www.bootdisk.com).
Go to someone who also has XP and copy the file NTLDR from their PC onto the floppy, then copy that file onto your laptop into C:\

Please help save my PC's life. I swear I am ready to throw it out the window!! I am having pop up trouble. I've installed and run just about everything out there to try and get rid of the file(s). Including the ones you lised in your post of steps to take before posting. Three of the 20ish programs found an adware file by OverPro that I can't remove manually!!

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\Wildapp.inf

I have XP set to show hidden and system files, yet when I use Windows Explorer to find it, it's not listed. Searching my system for the file doesn't work either!

I'm not even sure if this is the culprit. Please advise and thank you for your time.

Answer:Help save PC's life -- going to chuck it out window here...

Files in the Downloaded Program Files folder will not show by normal methods. You have to use a special tool or you can use the command prompt and some DOS commands.

If you have run ALL of the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

and you still have a prooblem, follow the steps below. But make sure you have run all those steps first.

- Download HijackThis 1.99.1

- Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

- Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

- Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

- Run HijackThis and save your log file.

- Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

OK, I am at my wit's end here. I've googled for 2 days straight and have tried seemingly every "fix" out there to no avail. I was hoping someone could help me out.

Both desktop and laptop can access the internet just fine. Both are set up for file and printer sharing with the firewalls currently disable while trying to figure this mess out. Both have the MSHOME set as the workgroup.

I verified that the Computer Browser, DHCP Client, DNS Client, Network Connections, Network Location Awareness, Remote Procedure Call, Server, and Workstation are started and set to automatic for both laptop and desktop.

Windows 8.1 (64 bit)AMD Radeon 6700 series GPUCX500 PSU-other than that just a HP desktop you buy at bestbuy.I have tried many suggestions on this site and others and cannot get to that darn BIOS menu. First, I tried going to PC Settings > Update and Recovery > Recovery > Advanced Start-up > Troubleshooting > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings. Taking this route begins to restart my computer but when it restarts, it beeps 6 times and the display never comes on. I wait it out and eventually have to manually restart my computer, which gives me a normal restart in lieu of the UEFI Firmware Boot or BIOS Menu. ---- I believe when I click the UEFI Firmware Boot button in Windows 8 it tries to boot from my integrated graphics card, I don't know what action to take from here.I have also tried other things like:-Removing Fast Boot from the Power Settings-Resetting the BIOS by removing the power cable and then removing the battery for a couple of minutes.I have been at this for 5 hours now, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks

Answer:Cannot get to my BIOS menu to save my life

Accessing the BIOS isn't so much CPU, GPU or PSU specific. Instead it belongs to the BIOS manufacturer that would be included with the motherboard. If you run SIW (freeware):http://www.snapfiles.com/get/siw.htmlIt will give you the motherboard details and the BIOS, BIOS version. From there you should be able to asertain the required method to access the BIOS successfully. Post the motherboard and BIOS (version) details and we should be able to help you gain access. message edited by btk1w1

hi dirtboy068,

Welcome to the Forums.

If you have the Yoga 11 running on Windows RT, you won't be able to install desktop apps or apps that are able to run on previous edition of Windows as this is a limitation of the OS and you can only install apps signed by Microsoft (these are the apps on the Microsoft Store).

If an app is not available from the Microsoft Store, you will need to wait until it gets available.

Check this Windows RT FAQ for more info.

Recovery partitions are notoriously fickle, they just don't work sometimes. They are very difficult to re-install, no OEMs as far as I know include this on any OS re-install DVD.

The recovery partition doesn't work after installing a new OS, many cases reported that they cease to function after a re-installation of the original OS.

Most OEMs include a way to make a DVD from this partition, this would be my recommendation, then you will have that copy.

A good image backup is easier and less work than the recovery option.
Make a backup image before the Win7 installation, save it to another physical storage device if possible. If that is not possible keep it on a separate partition.
If you have any issues with Win7 on your Netbook, you can restore the image.

Good luck.

I don't want to have to download it overnight AGAIN and lose what I've downloaded if I switch it off before installing. Please help!!!

Answer:Why can't you save the Windows 10 download to install at a later date?

The files are in a hidden folder in the root of C:\ they are in $Windows~bt.
Once downloaded, you don't need to download it again.

Hello all,

I'm having problems with my laptop trying to install windows 7 ultimate.

It all starts fine but gets to the point as where do you want to install windows and there is nothing there to select, no hard drive to save it to.

Here is a link as to where I asked on another site if you need a few details and see what I've done already to try and fix it.

If you still have an OS onboard the make your Recovery disks first.

Then follow these steps to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

I wonder if there's a chance I can still save my Windows 7. Here's what happened and what I am left with (laptop Toshiba Satellite C655):
1) Used EaseUS under Win to modify Windows system partition (to shrink it and make space for Ubuntu, making an extra partition formatted Ext3. Did not touch Recovery and Boot Win partitions.

2) During Ubuntu installation, I split Ext 3 partition, adding swap area. I believe might have removed "Primary" property from one of the 2 Win partitions (Boot or Recovery), but I reset it back immediately under Ubuntu install partition manager. Did not have problems booting Windows or Ubuntu after install.

3) Same steps done earlier installing Ubuntu alongside XP did not cause any problems.
This time, when I attempted to run Windows "Recovery" (recover to factory state), by pressing 0 during power-up, as it's done with this laptop--I could not do recovery this way anymore of course as Ubuntu install disables this interrupt--but I run Windows Recovery from boot manager, like I done many, many times with XP--this time however, I got unusual screens and a couple of error messages. After pressing cancel on these messages I was able to get to System Restore to Factory State option.

Answer:Can I still save my Windows (Ubuntu install/partition problems)?

No need for reply, I brought the dead recovery partition back to life...
Moved Win recovery partition several blocks back (have no clue how it got moved forward), run repair MBR and set it as active... it went into clean recovery on power up then.

It seems to be impossible to do factory restore of Win 7 (at least with Toshiba restore) without wiping out present Linux--it was possible with XP. Even if I specify small partition to occupy for Windows, the factory restore kills everything else and creates free space without file system where the Linux was before. So will have separate laptop for linux from now on.

HiI have a Thinkpad T400  2764-CTO Running Vista Business 32-bit  and want to do a clean install to Windows 7 Pro.Sounds like I can get all the drivers via System Update 4.0, but I'm concerned about how to save/re-install some of the software that came on the machine. In particular, Intervideo WinDVD and Roxio Media Import. If I go to my Programs folder and copy the folders for Roxio and InterVideo onto a flash drive, and then re-copy into the Programs folder on the C drive after a clean install, does that work? I've never used Rescue and Recovery on the laptop, and am not sure how it works. Any advice is appreciated. I'm not sure I even know all the stuff that exists from the factory. Anything else I should be concerned about? Thanks! - Kathleen

Answer:How backup/save software installed on T400 before doing clean install of Windows 7?

Hi kathleenklein,Just save the C:\SWTOOLS and C:\SWSHARE [if it exists on your drive] folders. The first directory contains all the setups for lenovo software including drivers, 3rd party programs like Intervideo WinDVD and Roxio Media Import etc. You can either copy them on a flash drive or burn on a disc. After Windows 7 installation, you can easily reinstall them. Hope it helps.

Hello to all,
Recently had a drive problem resulting in loss of WinXp system partition and personal data partition. 'Not a problem' thinks I, having TWO backup copies of the system image and all my files and folders on an external hard drive AND dvd-r, thanks to Norton Save and Restore (AND a note of the password in my safe, just in case )

After successfully re-installing the system, Save and Restore has LOCKED ME OUT OF MY DATA. I now have TWO copies of all personal files in Norton 'fbf' format that 'Save and Restore' CANNOT find or extract. Note that this is WITH the correct password and having previously tested Save and Restore before relying on it (by a test system recovery). The program appears to have a MAJOR ERROR in that it cannot find data backed up to non-system partitions. It will happily let you back them up, but is unable to find the files locked into the 'fbf's. There is a system-image explorer, but not a 'Files and Folders' explorer. No good whatesover unless you keep your personal data on the system partition.

A Symantec technician could not solve the problem (on a remote session) and ended by saying they would have to investigate and get back to me. This rules out 'finger trouble' on my part and points to 'Save and Restore' needing a patch - and quick.

Now wiser, I see there's no point storing files in the most open format (such as images in TIFF) to avoid future access problems, a... Read more

I hope you didn't select Delete Local Content or you'll have to download the whole lot again. I usually open Steam first (ensure you're signed in to your Steam account) then go to My Games, double click the one you want.

I need to install DirectX 9.0c to play my one game and these are all of the things that I've tried to do and it hasn't worked.
~Tried installing the Nov. 2008 Redistribution while having DirectX 9.0b
~Tried installing the Nov. 2008 Redistriubtion after rolling back to DirectX 8.1
~Downloaded DirectX 9.0b and pasted all of the files from the 9.0c redistribution into the 9.0b files and overwriting the older ones and then trying to install with the 9.0b setup after rolling back to 8.1 again

I've read through so many threads and I can't seem to get it installed, dxdiag always tells me I have 9.0b.

Edit:
This is what I get under the DirectX Files tab

The file qasf.dll is an old version, which could cause problems.
The file d3d9d.dll is a debug version, which will run slower than the retail version.
You should reinstall DirectX to get the latest version.

Hey, so the UPS man just came and gave me the Half Life 2 DVD version I ordered. So, naturally I ran up to the computer and began to install...then I got this error.

"Error 1335. The cabinet file 'hl23.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package."

So, what do I do? I searched and found this thread in another forum.

Since installing win 10, noticed dramatic battery drain.
In the space of 30 mins, just sat browsing with Firefox, battery dropped 10% which is quite abnormal based on pre-win 10 install.
Anyone else had this, or know what processses are hogging resource?

Answer:Laptop battery life post win 10 install

Take your pick in Taskmanager.Windows module installer was the worst for me.Also Windows Updates and the Store. But there are others. I set Windows Updates to manual which helped.
Then of course you have one of Windows defenders set to automatic and running and the other one set to manual but not running. managed to get the automatic one to stop running but had to use msconfig for that.
Not sure why they still run crap programs like that.
Windows updates are set to automatic with an automatic download and install which is bound to cause problems eventually.

Hi,
I want to be able to play Half Life:Counter Strike.

Now I read in a FAQ that I need to have Half Life installed to be able to install Counter Strike.

I didn't have Half Life 1 so I searched for it online and only managed to come up with something called Half-Life.1.Source-MaSaCrE.

I don't know what it is exactly but I am figuring that it must be the source code of the game Half-Life 1.

So now the question is how do I get around to compile it and install it on Windows 98 SE (if it's at all possible to do that) so that I can download CS and install it too.

If anyone knows kindly let me know

Thanks.

As many of you are aware windows 10 Preview will have to be removed (on some systems) and the original OS re-installed to get the Upgrade License Activation..

Since you already have the preview of 10 installed - most likely you also have the drivers and windows driver updates installed..

If you export the current drivers from the windows 10 OS before you remove it - you can save the updated drivers to a folder - to be imported later into your New Windows 10 upgrade OS..

I am sure some will find a way clean install windows 10 and it is nice to have all the updated windows 10 drivers on hand and in a folder..

Create a "Drivers" folder on your drive (example> D:\Drivers) then run this command from prompt(admin) to export the current drivers

Code:
Dism /online /Export-Driver /Destination:D:\Drivers

Once you install or re-install windows 10 - run this command to import the exported drivers into your new windows 10 OS

Code:
Dism /online /Add-Driver /Driver:D:\Drivers /Recurse

Hi all,

I have ran into the strangest problem while completing a fresh install of Windows 7. I had previously had Vista ultimate 64bit installed but decided to install Windows 7. The first time I did the install I decided NOT to format the vista partition, but to rather just install over it. I was using Windows 7 for about a month when I decided to get rid of all the Windows.old files (vista install) and do a fresh format.

I entered the Windows 7 install, FORMATTED the old partition which had the previous installation on it and chose a clean install. The whole process was slow but it ended up installing fine until the first reboot came around. The windows 7 logo came up but then the screen just displayed with " Power save mode on" and the green light on my monitor turned orange and it hasn't gotten further since.

I have tried to format and do the install again but it gets to the same point, the installation seems to be fine until the first reboot where the screen goes into power save mode after the windows 7 logo is displayed.. This seems strange as the ISO I used to do my initial install worked fine, but on a fresh install after format it wont work. I tried to boot into safe mode but it says it cannot load safe mode without the installation being complete.

Anyone ran into the same problem? Thanks in advance.

to start with all you had to do was open my computer -> check properties of C:\ -> click cleanup -> advanced -> and clean prior installs of old windows versions. (it is in the manual).

Power save mode: are you using a LAPTOP? If yes, make sure the AC Adapter is plugged in. (that is in the manual also.)

Hello everyoneI had purchased Lenovo Y50 and used the original windows 8.1 shipped with it for four months. I was getting a battery life of close to 5Hrs. Then last week I clean installed Windows 8.1 (original). But after booting into windows the action center was giving an error message that "Compatibility issue between your power management system and Windows.Your power management system isn't compatible with this version of Windows. The model name of your power management system is Lenovo ACPI-Compliant Virtual Power Controller."Then I installed Lenovo Energy management software and this error never came again. But my battery life is very less compared to initial state. Intially it was close to 5 hrs but now I am getting 2-2.5 hrs. All the programs remain the same except Kaspersky Internet Security. Initially it was 2014, now after clean install it is 2015. In the energy manager I see that when windows starts KIS takes upto 90% of battery. But after some use it decreases to less than 1%. Can anyone suggest a possible solution? I am thinking that it might be software issue because battery is relatively new but I maybe wrong. However in the Energy Manager it is showing battery status as Normal. Please help! PS: Forgot to mention that I updated the BIOS with the latest version from the Lenovo site after clean install.

Answer:Lenovo Y50-Battery life decreased after clean install

I did not have any error message after a clean install (Windows 8.1), but I have now only 3 hours battery life with minimum brightness, Power Saver mode and normal web browsing. I didn't perform any battery test before clean the clean install. Anyone from Lenovo can confirm if this is due to the clean install or is it a defective battery?

I've had my Thinkpad X230 for about a year and was able to get around 7-8 hrs of battery life. A month ago I had to do a clean install of the OS after talking to Lenovo Support over what seemed to have been a corruption in the file system. As soon as I did the clean install, the battery life dropped to about 3 hrs.  I believe I have all the latest updates and drivers (did updates both through Windows Update and Updates and Drivers in Lenovo's ThinkVantage Tools). I played around with the Power Manager settings but can't reproduce anything close to 7-8hrs of battery life. What am I doing wrong?

Answer:Thinkpad X230 - Lower battery life after clean install

wee bit hard to tell with the information i have.can you confirm that all devices are operational as per device manager?for my case, my 7200 rpm hdd eats up battery like a monster. having turbo memory serving as a "cache" of sorts was able to increase the battery life to over 50 percent. nowhere near as amazing as your 8 hours, mind, but 4hrs to 6hrs is pretty dang good.your x230, you may have a msata ssd serving as a cache instead. do check whether the thinkvantage system update installed intel rapid storage technology for you or not.

hi guys, I need your help, if I install windows 10 Pro 10162 and successfully Activate with the key Microsoft provided.

1-Is this Windows 10 Activated for ever LIFE LONG.
2-And if I format after 6 months my PC, and when I reinstall win 10 Pro on the same Genuine win 10 PC, is this going to REACTIVATE or not. I mean it is going to give me a trouble, like by saying "windows is not genuine ETC"
Usually when we have DISC of Windows FORMAT & REINSTALL 1oo times on the same PC, it will accept the same KEY with out any problem, please make me clear "what kind of genuine activation of windows 10 we have currently"
3-if I Activate windows 10 pro build 10162 Genuine by Microsoft currently, after 6 months when I format my PC I will install Windows 10 Pro Latest Build with the same Key, so it will be Re-Activate again with out any problem, please let me know.
I mean my Bother Board already Registered in Microsoft Account when I install Win 10 Pro Build 10162, once it is registered then any newer version windows 10 can I install with out any problem like a GENUINE always. please let me know.
Thanks for your replies.

Answer:download & install Win 10 Build 10162, Activate Genuine for Life long

1 no it is a beta pre release version and will time out in less than 6 months.
2 In 6 months there will be retail versions of Windows 10 to buy, which will be genuine. If you already have genuine Windows 7 or 8, you will be able to upgrade them to genuine Windows 10 versions or clean install thereafter.
3 10162 has already been superceded by a later build, so do not bother with 10162 any longer.

If you have a Microsoft account and register on the Insider program, It will be possible to run Windows 10 on your account after the RTM version has been released essentially as a rolling upgrade - so it will always be activated - whether the concept of "Genuine" or "LIFE LONG" applies to this, no one yet knows. It is certainly not illegal.

Hi, I have had my T430 since August of 2012 at the start of college. I am currently running windows 8.1 pro and I recently just noticed my battery life issues and after installing lenovo settings I discovered that my battery's capacity is at 27% of the original capacity. The battery life is really bad, e.g. it says 15 minutes remaining at 25% on POWER SAVER mode.  I have google this and it said to "reset my battery" but unfortunately 8.1 Lenovo power manager doesn't have that feature.  I am just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for what to do?  Will I just have to get a new battery?

Answer:Lenovo T430 Battery Life 1+ hour on life saver

you would have to have a pre-Windows 8 OS to gain that crucial battery reset function. This is one reason why i dislike running Win 8 on ThinkPad.

To all owners of X1 Carbon 2017 (5th gen).I read all of those reviews where people are impressed by 10+ hours of battery life (15,5h advertised), but I can't really figure out how....!? First time I tested was a normal working day - Firefox (a lot of Flash it must be said), Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat. Nothing really heavy, no peripherals except Bluetooth mouse. Brightness dimmed 1 level below the ideal. It lasted for about 4 hours! I windows's list of apps affecting battery life, Firefox was on 1st place with 32-35% Second attempt - same set of tasks, however less Firefox (no flash) - 7 hours. Now in the middle of a 3rd attempt (using Opera this time) - battery time remaining indication goes over 10h only when I completely stop using the laptop Not many apps running in the background either (Dropbox, Skype...) So my question - do you guys get more than 10h of battery life and HOW? Do you enable "Battery Stretch"? How actively do you use it and for what?

Hi all

Just a stupid little problem with W7 I noticed which is VERY confusing but simple to fix.

I changed via the dialog the TEXT SIZE via the screen resolution in the control panel to CUSTOM SIZE.

With one of the newer "Cinema" or Very Wide screen (1680 X 900) displays after I'd increased the text size to over 160 % I didn't get the possibility to SAVE any documents any more via the SAVE AS button. The SAVE dialog would appear but the SAVE button was missing.

The effect was noticed in Office 2007 (all programs) Notepad etc etc.

Seems to be a Windows fault as this should not be allowed to happen.

on more traditional "Squarer" type monitors -- no problem.

I couldn't find the answer by googling but a bit of "trial and Error" fixed the problem.

Question: zip/save/install

Hi there!

We have 2 puters - #1-Pentium III, #2 Pentium 2 - both 128, running windows 3.1 and IE6 on a high speed DSL through a Linksys router.

Puter #2 got so cranky that it had a thorough clean and reinstall by a tech - all works great, but it lost 2 programs we use a lot, Host Macropro and Popupkiller. Both of these are free downloads, but no longer available.

Problem: In my usual techno-dummy fashion, I've tried zipping them onto a floppy to reinstall on puter #2. Also tried sending them as a file attachment (both zipped and unzipped) through messenger, but they won't install - error message can't find DLL or something ......aaack!

Anyone any solution? (apart from a large hammer )

Answer:zip/save/install

most software installs .dll and other files to several different locations, so it's difficult - even with a large hammer - to copy them all to transfer to a different PC

you could copy PC1 over to PC2, but then you'd have to update/install the different video, sound etc drivers for the hardware that's different between the two PCs
(it's not that big of a deal, any decent - even MS's - backup program will do it for you)
- you could try backing up windows and program files and restore them to PC2 though, that should get all the programs over (assuming Host Macropro was installed to the program files folder)

may be overkill for just a couple proggies

have you looked around for similar freeware for whatever HMP does? at cnet, tucows, etc?

btw: PUK is still available through CNET downloads even though it's gone from the developer's site

Hello-I have to re-install Windows Xp on my computer. I want to save my progress in GTA Vice City and get it into the game after I re-install XP. What files do I need to save and how do I get them into the newly installed GTA Vice City game. Do I click and drag, or how to??
Thanks--Gomer Pile

Answer:How do I Save GTA progress to new Install of XP?

Uh.. been a while since I played vice city but there should be a "saves" folder in C:\Documents and Settings\*your user name*\My Documents.
Or if you dont have admin rights it might be under the admins user name.

That is the location to the GTA San Andreas user files, and I think Vice City also puts them there. Inside the GTA SA, folder is the settings and saves... These examples are called "GTASAsf1.b" .... Range from 1 - 8 for the 8 save slots.

You can copy all thats in there or just the saves.. Put them on a disc and once you reinstall copy them back in the same folder and location...

*Note; You may need to start a new game and save before the folder is created by the newly installed game.

Problematic for many programs with a few exceptions; certain programs' settings found in AppData can be File/Folder imaged and "copied" onto the new computer. For example, I have successfully done so with Mozilla's Firefox and Thunderbird; Google Chrome; and sometimes even with IE.

I need to do a clean install but wonder if I should save old settings. Wouldn't I just be imorting the problems back into the machine. If you recommend it then which are the most important ones and please describe where to find them and how to save them on another disk. I see in my Belarc report there are 10's of KB security updates. Do I need to save those as I've heard before they are sometimes the main culprit in making a machine go sluggish. Your advice will be appreciated. When was the last time you did something for the first time?

Answer:Save settings before a clean install

" Wouldn't I just be imorting the problems back into the machine"Yep.As long as you have all your important stuff ( Including your emails & address book ) backed up, you are better off doing a clean install.Make sure when you reinstall, you delete ALL partitions & format to NTFS.D to Delete the selected partition ( XP )http://www.blackviper.com/os-instal...Here are some examples of why you delete all partitions.http://forums.spybot.info/showthrea...http://forums.whatthetech.com/index...http://blog.eset.com/2011/10/18/tdl...

is there any way to save my apps so I can easily install them when I go to Windows 7 in October for a clean install?

Answer:Save apps for a clean install?

What ive been doing for the past few months is to install W7 from a SD card. Ive been using a bootable 16GB card and just replacing the windows folders with the latest leaked ones when ive got them (stopped at 7600 of course).
I also have a folder that i put my most used apps in. FF3, ESET, Newsleecher, my bookmarks, Lightroom 2, Office 2003 etc. I update the apps when new versions are released.
It works for me and its a lot quicker than installing form CD's/DVD's.
I even plan to do this when i get my HP copy in Oct.

got my new ssd and will do a clean install of windows in a day or so. common internet advice seems to be to copy drivers to a disk and save for install on the new ssd. how does one 'save" network drivers? most of my hardware came with driver/install disks so I can start with those drivers then update to the latest via the internet after the ssd is up and running. on another note, can one open a program and run it from the secondary hard drive (the old HDD)? I know I can access data files with no problems, files liked downloads, desktop, and my documents type folders. Thanks!

Answer:best way to save drivers for win7 new install in ssd...

Just download the exe file to a flash drive. You find the exe file at the manufacturer`s website.

If you have the network drivers on the cd, don`t worry about it.

Yes, you can run programs from the other drive, but they have to be installed to it from the new system.

I recently activated my free upgrade and chose to transfer over my programs, configurations, etc. After doing this, my boot time went from around 20 seconds to 1:15. I want to try a clean install but only if I still have the option to revert back to my 7 OS with all of my programs and settings intact.

Answer:Will 10 Save My 7 Configuration If I Do a Clean Install?

Clean install keeps nothing. If you want to be able to revert back to Windows 7, you need to do it now, make a backup image of your Windows 7 then do the clean install. If you want to return to Windows 7 after that then you would restore the backup image you made.

Answer:Can I do a clean install and save data??

After a couple of bad experiences losing data i decided to physically install a second drive and use it for MS office/data/programs/games/mp3's etc. On my C:drive i run only windows and other operating programs that are easily recoverable/reinstallable. i do this on the basis that (apart from performance and maintainance issues) i can now reformat C: and reinstall windows and keep the contents of the other drive. Will the contents of this second drive be usable? will windows update the registry of the drives contents? e.g., MS office or a game can still be used after the clean installation of the OS.

** [highlight]just passing on public info I find [/highlight]** The fact that you can install the Windows Vista Upgrade without having installed Windows XP or Windows 2000 is one of the latest developments since the Windows Vista release. It could save you money, but it might not be what it appears to be. Is this a legitimate glitch in the OS or simply an overlooked and permitted exception to the rules? Some call this method proof that the security and piracy measures used by Microsoft are invalid. Many members of several security mailing lists wonder where that opinion comes from. The issue is not a lack of security; it is a lack of product checks. The work around is simple. Proven by Daily Tech, and first announced by Windows technology guru Paul Thurrott, the steps needed are drawn out, but easy to follow. Boot with the Upgrade DVD version of Vista.  Click ?Install Now?.  When prompted for a Product Key, do not enter it yet.  This is the most important step; leave the fields blank, and click ?Next? to move to the next screen. On the new screen, select the version of Vista you bought. Install as normal (30 Day Trial). When finished, restart the DVD-based setup and install the software again, this time as a legitimate, full version.  This will perform an ?in-place? upgrade. It will ask for the Product Key once more, and now you should enter it.  The upgrade, sans Windows XP or 2000, is complete. That information isn?t illegal per se: it comes from the... Read more

I am running Windows XP SP3
I want to install Norton Save and Restore, and the system requirements include .net framework 2.0. My Add/Remove Programs lists .net 1.1, so I guess I do need to get .net 2.0. I went to the following page to download it, but it's unclear which link to click for the required download. [http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en]
At the bottom of the page there are several links. The closest one looks to me like [Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (x86)]. Is this the right one?
Also, that page says I need Windows Installer 3.0, and 3.1 is recommended. I don't know how to determine what version of Installer I have.

Can someone help out with this?

Another issue is that in addition to the $49.99 price, it forces me to subscribe to an $8.99 extended backup service to store my download for a year with Digital River. If I make backups of my installation file, why is this forced on me?

None of the stores in my town have a boxed copy of this software.

Thanks,
Rusty

Answer:Trying to install Norton Save and Restore 2.0

If you look at the page you will see the title at the top "Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package", just below that there is a brief description, and below that is On This Page, and immediately under the links for On This Page it the button for Download. This is what you click on to start the download.By the way, check out the price for this at this site, $25.00! The following is part of the review at cnet... The bad: Symantec does not offer adequate technical support for Norton Save & Restore and misleadingly pitches other Symantec products you may not need. Makes you wonder if you really need Digital River.

When I install Adobe 10 on client's machine, I like it in a install.exe file instead of downloading from adobe ea. time. Because their web site is quite often down, and the download hang half way, not to mention it's faster to grab the file from my own USB jump drive and install it from there.

Is there a way to do this? Instead of grabbing that adobe installer ea. time, then the installer grab that adobe reader, and hang 5 times out of 7 during download?

I have used Winternals to move the pictures out of my documnets in to the root directory so that they can be accessed freely.

I have tried connecting with a USB lead but i'm sure there are bad blocks on the drive and this is stopping me.

What i want to do is install XP again but retain my files on the drive. Will the install let me partition the drive without losing the files on the drive at present.

I know the the dis FUBARd but i want these pictures.

If the 32 bit "data" is just that, it is easy to import after you have re-installed the apps under 64 bit.

If it is something more try the windows easy transfer wizard.

Hello Everyone: I would like to save my existing Microsoft Updates in case I do a clean wipe and
a re-install of Windows XP Pro even though no support after April 4. There are so many.
I want to keep what I alredy have.

How can I install those that I now have when and If I do a re-install of my Windows XP Pro?
Thank you.

Answer:Save present Security Updates by a CD for uing on a re-install

Previous XP patches will still be available online after April, there will just be no new ones added to the repository.

I am not aware of a consumer service to store the individual hotfixes, as they are applied through trustedinstaller... If you have your SP files they can be saved on disk and installed when required though.

Hi,

I am wondering if end-of-life Vista is more dangerous than end-of-life XP. My reasoning is that Vista more closely resembles Win 10 than XP. So as MS was saying, attackers may reverse engineer patches meant for recent OS's into exploits that work on the end-of-life one. So it seems to me that Vista looks more dangerous than XP.

Hello All:

I installed an Archer C2600 router and connected to one of its USB3 slots an external USB3 hard drive and thought I gave all users permission to read/write all files on the external HDD.

Recently, I had to do a clean install of Windows 10 and since then, I have not been able to do the following:

(1) start portable apps that are saved on the external HDD;

(2) when downloading anything with a browser (usually Firefox, but also Edge and IE), I cannot save the downloaded file/executable/etc. straight to the external HDD; and

(3) I cannot cut and paste files/folders from an internal HDD to the external HDD.

Regarding No. 3, Explorer just continues to show 0% complete and when I go to cancel the transfer, the already open dialogue box indicates it is canceling, but never stops "Canceling[.]"

Q: Can anyone help me trouble shoot what the problem might be?

Thank you,
edsager

Answer:After Clean Win 10 install, no longer move/save files to external HDD

Update: I found and updated the firmware and until I restarted my computer (with Microsoft updates updating during the restart), all was working just fine. Sheesh.

I have also tried to use TeraCopy but I keep getting the same error found in one of the above images: "The request is not supported."

Thank you for your time,

Hi,
I've run into a following problem with Win 10 installation.

A month ago I've bought an inexpensive Atom 3735F + 1 GB RAM + 16GM storage Win 8.1 tablet.

I've first tried to install Win10 using "forced" windows update option (wuauclt.exe /updatenow), but it didn't work - probably because of not enough free storage space.
Then I've created a bootable USB pendrive with Win10, but the setup would quit. Now I know why - the pendrive was broken.
So I've decided to perform a clean Windows 10 installation by booting from the pendrive.
And here are several mistakes I've done: I didn't write down the Win 8.1 key before removing Win 8.1 partitions. I forgot that I would have to do the upgrade first for Win 10 to activate properly.

So here is where I am now:
I've performed a clean Win10 installation, by removing all the Win 8.1 partitions and I don't know what my Win 8.1 serial key is.

Now, the problem with Win10 is that it is stuck in some sort of a boot loop: Windows boots, asks me to choose a WIFI/3G network and choose the settings (express etc.), then it loads for few seconds (spinning circles), then it reboots and I'm back again asked to choose wifi/specify settings...

I want to be at least able to use my tablet before I get the Win 8.1 key from the manufacturer (I hope it is possible) and do the upgrade procedure correctly.

Any ideas on how I can quit this boot loop? Do you think the manufacturer might make any problems with providing me my original Win 8.1 ke... Read more

My windows7 64bit installation is fine the way it is.

I know it is possible to save the installed updates/fixes which are somewhere on my disk in a windows-folder. I read this somewhere. And later reinstall them all together if I need to reinstall windows7 from the original ISO (which does not have the updates). How do I do this can you guys give me a detailed walk-through?

Also, does it matter in which order I reinstall these updates/fixes with a fresh install of windows7? When I got the updates online I think I remember that some updates were installed in a particular order. So maybe this is important.

Answer:How to save & reinstall installed updates/fixes with fresh install?

The order is important. That's why it is better to rely on the automatic update. And also, by the time you reinstall (if ever) some of the old updates may have been superseeded by newer ones. A 'manual intervention' is not worth it and bears a lot of risks.

If you want to avoid having to reinstall from scratch one day, make periodic images (with free Macrium). Then you can always go back to a prior image and avoid the painful update process.

Hi everyone i am new to this forum so not really too sure on how to post so ill do my best to outline my problems.

Well about a month ago my dell vostro 1700 laptop started freezing on vista ultimate. I ran pc doc pro regestary fixer and it did nothing. in the end i found out the mmc.exe file was damaged in some way so i shreaded and replaced it. However the laptop has stoped creating restore points and i cant create any new ones, not even manually and all my previous ones have gone. I get an error message about shadow files. When i try to defragment it says performaince can be improved at this time and it defrags for about five minutes and goes back to saying performance can be improved at this time. Finally i cant install any updates for vista and i cant even install steam however it lets me install super anti spyware and some other programs. Its just really frustrating me as i need this laptop for work and i have no idea how to fix it any help would be verry much apreciated :)

Answer:Save me Vista defrag, install and system restore problems

OK, to start with get rid of ALL anti spyware or registry cleaners or antiviruses that you have installed. They tend to conflict with each other and that could be causing some of your problems.

Replace your antivirus software with this one: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ and run a full scan.

Also follow these instructions exactly: http://www.techsupportforum.com/f217...ml#post2545708 as even if you aren't getting bluescreens they will be able to tell us something about the state of your system and possible issues

I have a question for those who are experienced in performing numerous vista installations. I have 2 identical laptops as far as hardware goes, each with its own COA sticker (that is obviously different). I just did a clean install of Vista 64 on one of them from the digital river SP1 files available. As you know, there are several hundred updates to Windows since then, and these take many hours to download and install. I am trying to avoid some of that in the future. What I am wondering is this: If I want to do a clean install on the second machine as well, can I simply create a disk image of the first clean install machine (with Windows totally updated), clone this to the second machine, and then re-activate Windows in the second machine by changing to its COA in Windows? This would save a lot of time by not having to download and install all the hundreds of updates. If that will work, I would like to keep the clean updated disk image for re-installations of both machines so I can use that as a starting point instead of starting from SP1. Thanks for your insight.

Answer:Question on trying to save time performing a clean install on 2 identical computers

Yes, that will work. Or you could mount the drive from teh 2nd computer as a slave in the 1st and do a direct clone using Macrium Reflect Free.

First and only time I tried to use the Feedback App, the OS changed my local account to an MS account, which I don?t want to use (hadn?t memorized the password and had to reinstall the OS). Would appreciate anyone who feels similarly about these issues leaving feedback.

In IE11, restoring the title bar removed from IE9 forward, and restoring the Ctrl-Q key sequence from IE10 that displayed a page of thumbnails of all open pages, removed from IE11.

Restoring the ability to not use Windows Defender, removed as of a few builds ago.

Also, for those seeking to save a couple to several minutes (depending on one?s CPU power) converting Install.esd to installable media: press ESC when the .cmd script displays that it has begun making the .iso to leave a folder with the installation files and folder structure ready to copy to one?s prepared USB flash drive.

Answer:Request feedback campaign; save minutes making install media

You could also save even more time by just keeping the install.wim file (converted from esd) and reapplying it instead of reinstalling.

Or save yourself hours, and fully install Windows 10 + drivers + software + settings, and capturing that into a wim file. Then just "reinstall" with that image instead.

If you forget your password, you can still get into windows without reinstalling, you just have to mount the SAM registry hive, flip the administrator account to active, and fix things from there.

i had to do a fresh install of xp a few days ago due to logon.exe, ive got all the updates, have advast, malwarebytes, and superantispyware installed...i noticed my system tools folder is empty now, and my we browers(firefox, explorer 8) wont keep bookmarks, addons once the computer is turned off. Also wont keep passwords, etc for other programs....anyone have an idea why?

Answer:fresh install, pc wont save bookmarks, passwords, system tools gone

Not pointing fingers, but it COULD be a pirated version. I doubt it, but it's possible.

It could also be a scratch on the CD/DVD, a bad dvd drive, a bad hard drive... possibilities aren't endless, but they aren't exactly limited either. I'd try it again if it wouldn't be too much an inconvenience.
