Switching Users explorer.exe freezes

Question: Switching Users explorer.exe freezes

I have a PC running WinXP SP2 that has 5 users (2 with admin rights and 3 with user rights). The computer runs fine when a single user is logged on. The problem is that when fast switching to another when someone is already logged in causes the second user desktop and mouse to freeze. The only work around is for the user with the frozen desktop to start the Task Manager and "end" the explorer.exe process that pertains to their account and to then restart it using the Task Manger run command. Then the second user can run computer with not other problems. The odd thing is that if I fast switch back to the 1st user logged into the system there is no problem with their Desktop or mouse. But if I log out this 1st user and sign them back in then the desktop and mouse freeze. This occurs user regardless of what combination or order I use for the users. Basically solo user equals system fine and fast switching to more users creates problems for the added users.

Here is what I have tried so far without fixing the problem (after each effort I would try to Fast Switch user).
1. Verified WinXP fast switching is "turned on". Have turned it off and turned it back on.
2. I have reviewed the Event log for errors. There are no entires current that pertain the problem.
3. I have Norton Antivirus on the PC. No errors found. Have run the PC in standard and in safe mode to run an entire system virus scan.
4. Have run Spysweeper as well in standard mode and safe mode... nothing found.
5. Have run MSCONFIG to disable all non-essential services including Norton Antivirus and Spysweeper. Second user desktop stili freezes when switching.
6. Uninstalled ATI graphics software.
7. Reinstalled latest ATI graphics software.
8. Put the PC into safe mode and run the System File Checker.
9. My system restore stopped working so I had to reinstalled WinXP. I used the second "repair" option not the 1st time it offered during the process.
10. Installed SP1
11. Installed SP2
12. Installed all Microsoft updates.

I can think of much else to do. Not sure why I must end the explorer process and restart on the affected user every time. This didn't use to happen. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Switching Users explorer.exe freezes

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Switching Users explorer.exe freezes

Have you tried creating a new user and see what happens to the new user
Also do the users have profiles for different screen resolutions etc?

With the exception of the removable 500 GIG hard drive, sound card and Ethernet card all the hardware is new.

The computer had been running slow. So, when I installed my new 1 tb drive, I reinstalled XP and all my software from scratch. Only data was restored from my system backup.

The title really says it all. I had been having problems with my USB mouse. To fix this I have uninstalled the mouse driver and let it reinstall itself at the next boot-up. So far so good. Time will tell whether this has actually worked. However, my previous problem with the computer freezing up while switching user still persists. The freeze usually happens while switching from a user account to the welcome screen.

the only other significant thing I can think of is what when I installed XP on my new HD. As soon as I went to open Internet Explorer, and before anything else was installed or restored, I received the customary message that explorer had encountered a problem and had to shut down!

So, I really don't know what to do next. Thanks for any ideas.

Two days ago, I started having a problem with my desktop freezing. When I restart the computer, I am able to log onto my account fine. But when I switch users (I am not on a domain) to my girlfriend's account, her desktop freezes.

- The mouse can move, but I am unable to click the start button, nor any of the icons.
- I also get the hourglass when i hover my mouse over the task bar.
- When I push ctrl+alt+delete, and switch users, the desktop completely freezes and nothing happens.

- I am running XP Professional, and have had no problems since I installed it over 5 months ago
- I have done no major program installations or configuration changes recently

Any help would be appreciated!!

Answer:Desktop freezes when switching users

I would run any antivirus you have, and any spyware removal software as well, run them in safe mode.

It freezes sometimes but not always. The bottom task bar disappears and the area where it should be is a bright blue with some white box borders around it.

I can't click to launch any applications. I can press ctrl-alt-delete. If I select shut down it tells me that explorer.exe is not responding. If I press end task it doesn't seem to do anything. I have to press the power button and hold for ~ 5 seconds to restart.

Last night I tried a system restore to a restore point from about a week ago. I think that's before the problem started. Didn't seem to make a difference.

I've run the Zone Alarm spyware and antivirus applications. I've run Spybot and AdAware. Nothing obviously malicious and I've fixed all apparently minor problems they've found.

I don't think I've installed any new software since the problem started.

Answer:Explorer.exe freezes sometimes when I switch users

I've seen some improvement.

Since my post I've run msconfig and under Services I deselected things labeled "unknown" in the manufacturer column:

- the "Apple Mobile Device" which I think came on after I installed ITunes and then uninstalled it.

- something called "DSBroker Service"- I don't know what it is.

- InstallDriverTable Manager

In the startup tab I deselected QTTask, Realplay, and Adobe Update Manager- all things related to applications that have given me trouble before.

I've had no freezes since then. I'm not sure which of those items above may have been the problem, or if something else is going on and this is just a coincidental improvement,

Hi guy's just wondering if it's possible to get windows 7 to switch audio drivers when you switch to another user account.

For eg.. normal speakers device for my personal account and then have my multichannel device (profire 2626) set as default for my other user account 4 studio work.

Atm, if i change it on one account it changes on the other account which is annoying and i'd just like to set default device for each account so i don't have to do this.

Answer:Switching drivers when switching users?

I don't think this is really possible since the sound settings apply globally. I'm curious why you want to do this, though...

Question: switching users

Ihave a problem swith between account users.

when i first log on everything is fine and logging off is o.k. the problem arises when you log onto a new user and try to log off. It wont let you log off.

The only way is by using ctrl, alt, del and manually logging off.

I have recently installed a wireless internet connection and with the connection being on all the time i wondered if that might be the problem.

I disconnected the connection and everything worked as normal.

Is there a way that you can stay online while switching between users?

Any help would be greatly apreciated....Many Thanks

Answer:switching users

Try enabling fast user switching, if you haven't already done so. I don't know if this will fix it, but it's worth a shot. Or if it's enabled try disabling it.

Okay so I have a computer that three people use, so we have profiles. I'm usually downloading things and when they log off, this is terminated. I'd like to be able to have it so they can go on the computer and I can keep downloading. So the feature I'm looking for is switch users. The problem is; It's not anywhere in sight. I was using the classic theme for both the icons of folders, and the start menu (all programs in stead of programs, etc). I would be fine with switching to the default look if it enabled me to switch users.

I just realized that I can't even change the look back to default. Can anyone help with either problem? (changing back to the default look, and being able to switch users)

Here are possible things that I've done:
Start>Shut Down> Than from here there is Log off, Restart, Shutdown, Standby. No switch.

When I try to go back to the default view I do this.
Right Click on Start>Properties> The option should be here but it's not.

Answer:Switching users... Can't do it.

Is "Use Fast User Switching" checkmarked in the User account under control panel?? If it's should get the "Switch User" listed when you click Start..Log Off. There is also a registry tweak that will keep your internet connection active while switching users. Do so at your own risk as you will be editing and adding a value to the registry.

Here's how if you want to attempt.

1. Click Start, click Run and type REGEDIT and hit Enter (or click OK)
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/ CurrentVersion/Winlogon
3. Right-click an empty space in the right-hand pane, and from the menu
Select New > String value
4. Name the new value KeepRASConnections (it's important that you use upper and lower-case letters exactly as shown)
5. Right-click the KeepRASConnections value, and choose Modify from the menu
6. Enter 1 as the Value data
7. Close the registry editor
8. Restart Windows for the changes to take effect

I've been having a problem where when I switch users from another account and start using iTunes, it keeps playing the error/prompt sound that I hear for the other account. When the other account user switches back, they find a lot of prompts saying that "iTunes cannot be opened because another user has it open", despite the fact that they didn't have iTunes running.

If I terminate the other user's process through Task Manger -->View Processes from all users, it stays off for about 2-3 minutes before coming back on, playing the annoying prompt sound and displaying the pile of prompts.

is there any way to get around this?

Got a problem that I have not encountered before. My little used Compaq Presario died again so I pulled the hard drive out and disposed of the carcass. Then I picked up a P3 lease return w/o a drive in it. I put my drive in and started it up. Windows wouldn't load...said some dll was missing. I figured if one was corrupted there were probable others and just reinstalled XP Pro over it. I can't do a clean install because I have no way to back up any data on my drive just yet.

Anyway, this is not the first time I have installed XP but this time, when we attempted to switch between users, it asked for a password and would not go any further. Naturally, I did not have any passwords set up at that point. In order to switch users, we have to reboot the system. That pretty much defeats the purpose of being able to switch back and forth between users so I would really like to get this fixed.

I checked under CtrlPanel>Power>Advanced and found that Fast Switching was enabled and there was a check mark beside 'Prompt for Password". I removed the check mark but it didn't change anything, it still wants a password to get in.

My XP Pro does not yet have SP2 on it. I do not know any specs for this computer either. And I find that the drive was loaded with bugs and hidden goodies. You know the sound that the computer makes when you click on start-> Log Off -> Switch User? It's a specific sound like when you turn off your computer or when you restart your computer, or when you log in to your computer. That "Windows" sound. Well for me, that sound has disapeared everytime switch users. My normal sound is okay, and the log off/log in sounds are still there, but for some strange reason, my Switch User sound is gone. I was just wondering what caused this, it's not really a big deal, but I am just curious as to what happened.

Answer:Switching Users Sound

Don't know why it stopped, unless some one disabled it or deleted the file.
You can reset/select the sound you want here:
Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices
Sounds Tab
Last two items under the Windows section are Windows Logoff and Windows Logon
Files are usually in the Windows\Media folder:
Windows XP Logoff Sound.wav
Windows XP Logon Sound.wav

There are various things that can cause it to stick, this including:Some sort of corruptionAntivirus programCertain network adapter driver typesWhether or not you are using Domain or Workgroup, or just your local group. What antivirus protection do you have?Did you try updating your network drivers? (WiFi devices, Ethernet devices, Network controllers, Windows Update)Are you connected to a network?Have you tried disabling Switch Users, and then restarting, and enabling it?

Here's my situation: when switching from one user to another, the monitor goes black, then large letters come on that say PC Self Diagnosis Y or N? It then goes completely black causing us to reboot. Also, the light on the monitor blinks on and off. It does not seem to be a hardware problem. Can anyone offer any advice?

Answer:Switching Users Problem

What happens if you click "Y"?Does it try to sell you a program to correct the problem? (open your browser and take you to a webpage)If so, it is malware, and you should install, update and run Adaware, Spybot Search and Destroy and the Microsoft Anti-malware beta to try to get rid of malware infestations that may be present in your computer.AdAware SE (get the freeware version although they will keep attempting to sell you an upgrade): S&D (freeware): Antispyware Beta (freeware):

Over the course of the last few months, I have been experiencing issues logging into my office computer from home as there has been other individuals logging in at my work station using the "Switch User" option. This creates issues for me logging in from home. Locking the computer does nothing to prevent Switching Users. Is there any way to make my Windows 10 computer at work only usable by, making Switching Users not possible? Thank you in advance.

Answer:Can I Prevent Switching Users?

Hello Markaz,

You could use the method in the tutorial to also remove the switch user option in Windows 10 to see if that may help.

Hello, i recently removed a virus with the help of one of the mods of this forum by using combofix, my computer sped up greatly but now i find when i try to switch users it takes from around at the minimum 5 minutes to switch and the max around 8 or 9 mins.

I am using windows Vista Business, 2.6Ghz Core 2 Duo Processor and a sufficient amount of ram (in my opinion anyways - 3gigabyte ram).

Could i have some help in solving this issue and trying to get it back to its normal 5-15 seconds user switch? The waiting time can get tedious when i switch users and its really annoying!

Help would be great appreciated!

Answer:Switching Users Issue

Have you tried disabling and then re-enabling fast user swithching this will hopefully re-write some of the settings and hopefully solve your problem.

Disable it using the control panel, then restart your machine.

Then re-enable it and again restart your machine.

Let me know if it works

I've had this problem for a long time now. Every once in a while I will set out on a google quest to find the answer but I haven't succeded yet

The problem is that whenever I "switch user" (win + L) out of my account for someone else to log on their account, when they try logging off, my monitor acts like if I was putting the computer into sleep mode. That is, it goes black and some messages come up on the screen saying the usual "check power etc" messages and the light flashes. The computer continues to run and there is no way of restoring my screen so I am forced to press the main power button on the computer tower.

I am running windows xp professional sp 2
My video card is nvidia geforce fx 5500
Pentium 4 3.00GHz
I run zone alarm and AVG in the background

I have not always had this problem. I don't remember when it started but it has been a long time now (I would say at least 6 months.)

Appreciate any suggestions or information...

When switching users in XP Pro - the OS has suddenly decided it needs to reboot.

Regardless of which account your switching from/to - XP executes the switch, but before it completes - the screen goes black and the machine reboots for no apparent reason.

Any ideas as to why this is happening? I'm running Norton Antivirus and run SpyBot on a regular basis.

Two problems :
1. With W7, as say User 1, I could listen to music or BBC radio via the internet. If I switched to User 2, the music or radio opened as User 1 would continue to play and be heard as User 2. With W10, switching users cuts out any music or radio opened as User 1. Are the listening features under W7 available under W10?
2. With W7, I could copy from documents or spreadsheets opened under User 1 and paste into documents of spreadsheets as User 2. This feature does not work in W10. Can this be fixed?

I have set up 2 users; 1 as administrator (me) and 1 for my wife. It is a home computer and we do not require password protection. I am the normal user and have managed to set up so that I login within having to enter password.
However when my wife uses the computer the Start-up screen is me and my wife has to switch user. When she does this she has to enter her her password.
Is it possible to set-up so that she can simply switch user without her passport

Answer:Switching Users without password

Hello Polterry, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Since you have more than one user account on the computer, you might consider using the tutorial below to set to always show all users at sign in instead of the last user. Since you do not have a password, it would sign in to your account automatically if you were the last one that signed out. Having it set to all users, will instead have the sign in screen show with all user accounts to select to sign in without having to switch user.

Sign in - Show All Users or Last User in Windows 8
If your wife doesn't have a password, she should be able to just select her account to sign in.

Hope this helps,

I am trying to set up my computer so that my wife can use it, but not have access to all my files and programs etc...

I have created her user account, but whenever i try and switch users it hangs at a Red screen, sometimes with a box saying "Applying personal setting Internet Explorer 6".

What am i doing wrong? Do i have to log my account off first before switching over?

Answer:Problems switching users

Well, I think it is because of the available memory on your computer. What are your computer's specs?

Try logging off your account, and then signing into hers. If it's the first time she's signing in, it can take a long time for all the new user settings to be the internet explorer 6 is being installed... leave it alone for like 10-30min and see what happens.

Fast user switching can block a number of items although I have never heard of your problem.Does this key combination work with FUS turned off. If so turn it off ,then check Microsoft to see if there is a work around .You may not need it anyway,I have found it isn't worth it.

Hey guys, recent problem here with switching usernames. There's three accounts on my computer, all with no passwords. About three weeks ago a strange thing has been happening: the first time you start your computer and log into one of the three accounts, it'll log you in no problem. Then, when you go and switch users, it will prompt for a password that was never created, and won't let you log in. So I restarted the computer, and then I put some simple passwords on the accounts, thinking it would work. Well, the same thing happened. The first time you log in after a bootup it works, but then you get locked out again once you try switching users again.

This is where it gets even stranger. The problem stopped, you could switch users fine. "Alright!" I said, "it's finally over."

I was wrong, once you restart the computer it went back to locking me out. I'm so confused about this, and it's really frustrating. I've tried virus scans and there appears to be no problems with anything like that. I really need some assistance here.

Answer:Problem With Switching Users.

Try going to users in the control panel and click on switch the way users log on or off.

Whichever way you have it set, change to the other.

After you do that reboot, then go back to users and switch back.

Let us know.

I use to be able to switch users on AOL and see how many e-mails each user had, along with their sign on names. Now working with Windows 7 and I can't see all my AOL usernames. Does anyone have a solution for this?

Answer:Switching users to sign in to AOL

Take off the training wheels, drop AOL and really use the internet. Your ISP can offer you a number of email accounts, or you can use gmail, yahoo, or other free email accounts out there. No one really needs AOL anymore. When AOL was first around, the pure internet was scary for many so AOL put in place simple controls and hid much of went on behind. Long before even XP came around the internet and browsers became more friendly (as long as you had a good antivirus program) and easier to use, basically making AOL obsolete. Today, there is really no reason to use it any longer. Try it with Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or others. Email accounts can be web based where you log in through your browser similar to the way you probably do today, or one that uses an email client like Outlook, Windows Mail, and Mozilla Thunderbird to name a few where you open your email program and it downloads your emails for you and you keep them on your computer. Thunderbird has options for independent multiple email accounts as well as multiple accounts that feed into a single inbox. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

For some reason, if I log on to my account (an administrator account), then log off, none of the other users (my husband's admin. account or the kids' limited user accts) can be signed on. XP sits on the welcome screen for an unusually long time, then goes to just the user's wallpaper screen (no icons, no taskbar, nothing). Can't pull up task manager or warm boot, have to shut down & restart. I can log on any of the other accounts, and log off, and switch to mine, but not vice versa. Even if I don't do ANYTHING after signing on. So, the problems seems to be with my account settings somehow.

This is a new problem -- actually, my husband (who notices it most, because I use the PC most of the time, and then when he tries to get on at night, can't) says it was happening itermittantly, but now happens every time.

Any ideas?

I Am running Win7 64 bit. Whenever I switch user accounts the computer will start the switch and then lock up with a display message that says no signal on the monitor. It happens if the computer has been running for hours or only a couple of minutes. I have to shut the PC off and leave it off for 20-30 minutes. I can then restart and enter any user account. But if I try to switch user or logoff and pick a different user the whole cycle begins anew. Can anyone here help me?

Answer:Switching Users Problems

No signal to the monitor seems more like a graphics problem. Check and make sure your drivers are up to date. Also, run scannow system file checker. That will check the system files. See if either of these help.

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I did a search and could not find anything related to the problem I'm experiencing.

I have an XP box with SP2, and have created several accounts for my family. I've found that often when I try to log off a family member and log on as myself that the pc freezes. It seems to be ok at first because it expands my name once I click on it, but very shortly will do nothing and I have to press reset.

Does anyone know what that might be? Thank you in advance for your time.

My monitor will say "no video signal detected" mainly when switching users and logging off, but it will also do it randomly when I try to restart the monitor with the mouse/keyboard after the monitor shuts off for power conservation and sometimes when coming out of hibernation.

The only way I can reinitialize the signal is to...
1. Blindly find shortcuts to reboot, sleep, login.
2. Switch to the other dvi port on the video card on the fly while the system is running (I know you're not supposed to do this.).

When I had my old video card (Radeon x800-xl) installed it did the same thing. I thought upgrading the card to a more recent, perhaps more Vista compatible card may do the trick but the problem persists (HIS Radeon HD 4670 dual dvi).

There are no secondary monitors or display adapters to disable in device manager. There is, however, two entries in Display Settings-Monitor tab:
"1. Hanns.G HI221 D-sub on ATI Radeon HD 4670
2. (Default Monitor) on ATI Radeon HD 4670."
I can't see a way to disable the second entry.

I have updated to recent display adapter and catalyst control center. I have updated the bios from Gateway. Updated monitor driver. Will do Windows update if suggested but I have no faith that will solve the problem.

The issue has been going on too long to do a system restore.

My system:

Does anyone know of a hack for this? It's not new to Win8 and is by design, according to the definition of the error # left in the applog (see below). This seems like the sort of thing that there would be a workaround for, but I haven't found it yet if so. It's a definite annoyance.

The connection was terminated because user switch happened.

There are multiple login sessions on the user's computer. The user switched from a login session with an active RAS connection to another session. This resulted in the termination of the connection. Switch back to the original session and make the RAS connection again.

Windows XP Pro
Core 2 Duo 6400
Radeon 1900xt

When I'm logged onto my windows user account and I click start > log off > switch user it brings me to the XP start up screen and lists all of the system's user profiles. When I click on another profile and enter the password, the desktop flashes for a second, then a blue screen, then it kicks me back to the profile screen. The only way I can change users is by logging off the one I'm on before switching. I used to be able to log into multiple profiles at a time.

I tried disabling then re-enabling the switcher user option in the control panel, and I tried the "User Profile Hive Cleanup Service" but it didn't seem to do anything.

When I switch users from the Start Menu, the screen just goes black for a few minutes before the logon screen eventually appears. The wait seems to be getting longer and longer. I have the Classic Shell start menu installed. This used to work fine. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hey all,
This is a new one for me, I hope someone can help. If I have any number of IE windows open, then switch users to my wifes side, leaving IE windows open on my side. When I come back to my side, whether I opened IE on her side or not, all of my toolbars are gone, Google, address, standard buttons, everything. It's just a big blank at the top of the page. When I open a new instance of IE their back. But why did they disappear on my open IE's. This is peculiar behavior I have never seen before, I have no idea where to start trying to fix it.
Any suggestions?

Answer:Switching users loses toolbars in IE

Im not too sure what you mean by switching "sides" to another user? Could be that her profile does not have the same toolbar installs you do and somehow screws yours up. But please elaborate on what exactly you are switching sides with.

Hey Again guys ^^

I'm having a major problem with my Wireless Internet,
If I want to download something overnight, whilst a friend or someone else is using the PC, I would usually switch users (Back when i was cable to router), but Now that I'm wireless, everytime I switch users the Internet cuts out, then reconnects on the other user, which stops my downloads from going ahead.

Is there any way to disable this feature? I've tried disabling the power saving check boxes and etc, but nothing so far.

Please help tech guys!

Three in the family have accounts or profiles on the same PC - sometimes it takes for ages to switch - other times it is fine - other times it crashes. Windows tries to find an online solution each time it crashes but comes up with no answer. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks

Hi, every time someone uses their account on my vista for a long time(several hours), when i switch users to go into my account, the computer slows down. It takes about 30 seconds to switch users, and 10-15 seconds to login, while if nobody has been using the pc it takes about 5.(by "not using" i meant it just stayed on the pick user screen) This happens mostly when a user leaves the computer without getting out of their account, and after some time the computer locks the user account automatically, and after that it's slow for me. The slowness comntinues for some time, like 2-3 minutes, but can be so slow that it takes 20 secs to start IE. I have scanned for viruses, defragged, and used disk cleanup. Any tips to make it faster? Thanks.

Answer:Vista slow after switching users

OK first off if someone leaves an account they should log out of it, not lock it as that means all there processes are still running. It's always worth a restart if someone has been using the computer for 'hours' so you can clear the cache before starting a new session. Remember a lot of your programmes are shared hence they get slower the more info you give them.I would say 'personally' restart after every 'user' change.I may be wrong..

My computer will go to sleep for being idle, I bring it back to life and that user is still open, all of a sudden things start randomly open such as 90 instances of internet explorer (1 at a time and I can't stop it and never clicked on it in the first place), or my sidebar will open 109 calenders and so on. I cant stop this from happening. Also, sometimes when I switch users my monitor all of a sudden goes blank, says no input, and goes to sleep. I wake it up and it says no input detected and goes back asleep. The computer is still on but I have to reset it to bring the monitor back on.

Answer:Switching users causes my system go haywire!

Try logging off ALL users and restart your machine. It appears that when you use "Switch user" there are several copies of the different accounts.

I never use "Switch user" and always use log off, it takes a little more time, but a lot less issues. This applies to ALL OS's not just Vista.

Thanks! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try to update the drivers of your graphics card, mainly if you run a Nvidia card.

Hi, i get my internet from a router. When i switch users, my fellow users cannot get internet after it was working fine on my account. If they go back to the welcome screen and i log back in, my internet still works. This works vice a versa. So if he logs on first then i don't have internet.

See my problem?

Anyone experineced this before?

Answer:Switching Users Results With No Internet

odd problem indeed
i know you said the issue was visa-versa, but do all users have administrator rights?

In windows let us consider two users as A and B when we are using A user can we switch to B user in a moment and same as when we are working in B user can we switch to A user in a moment ??

Could anyone please let me know the possibilities ??

Awaiting for the reply.

Thank you for the valuable time..

Answer:Users switching in a moment - any possibilties ??

Depends on your version of windows.
For XP it would be something like this.......
Enabled, your programs keep running when you log out and logon
to another user so you can switch back with all programs still running.
Windows 7 and I think,Vista have fast user switching
on the shutdown menu listed on the start menu.
