Preferred Solution: what doe's Disk Usage (Bps) mean?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: what doe's Disk Usage (Bps) mean?

It would be a speed measurement of "Block per Second", "bits per second" or "bytes per second".

I have no idea which right now
Well, hold on -- none of the above for HP apparently -- its "kilobytes per second"

Hi guys, hope you can help me please. I'm not too computer savvy so sorry if I'm missing something important or I say something dumb. I'm really frustrated and I'm trying my best to learn and solve this problem.
So I bought this Vaio with Core i5-3210M, 4Gb Ram, Windows 8 64 bit. I had really high hopes for it, coming from an i3. For the first few weeks it worked fine, but then it started to freeze while watching movies. Then it started happening all the time, and the cooling fan became consistently noisy for working at full capacity.
I was used to opening task manager on older systems when this happened to see if there was a non-responding program and force it closed, so I noticed Task Manager offers some more features in Win 8. Here, I see that CPU usage is high, staying always around 70% and from time to time reaching 100. At this moment, the process taking the biggest slice is called VCS System Tray with 58%.
What's perhaps more concerning, is that Disk usage is almost constantly on 100%. And by this I mean it reaches 100 and stays there for long periods of time, perhaps up to 20 minutes, then it falls down a few seconds and up again to 100. During this time the computer is excruciatingly painful to use. To even open a program takes forever. When this happens, it seems that Chrome is at the top of the list of processes with most disk usage, with about 1-2Mbps, but this sometimes changes and the list can be led by System, Utorrent, Octoshape, VCS System Tray, Communication... Answer:100% CPU usage, 100% Disk usage, cooling fans full speed

Hi, welcome to the forums,
Go to Device manager(right click bottom left corner), uninstall the "VAIO care" driver, get the new driver from Sony support:Sony eSupport - Computers - Support
Install and see whether it helps, check your system for virus infections with Malwarebytes as well.

Every 10-40 minutes, the application I'm currently working in [whither it be skype, L4D2, or firefox] becomes unresponsive, and after a minute or two, the window turns white, notifying me that it's not responding. This unresponsiveness quickly spreads to other open processes, rendering them frozen as well. I can still use the mouse, and it appears rainmeter still responds [updates, showing barely any CPU usage].

Steps I've taken to try and resolve this:
Using only one main program, still does it
turning the computer off and on again
Memtest is clean
chkdisk passes
MBAM/MSE scans return nothing
defragged
no memory overflows that I can see

While troubleshooting, I noticed that during the 'fit of unresponsiveness' the disk usage light on my tower is solid, but when I looked at the disk usage in the resource monitor, no processes whatsoever were using it [screenshot related]

If any more specifications are needed, I'll be happy to elaborate.
Thanks!

Answer:Frequent unresponsiveness, 100% hardware disk usage, 0% software usage

It could be indexing. What if you turn off indexing just as an experiment?

So on Saturday of last week my PC started to run slow. I open up task manager to check what was going on and I am greeted with it showing me that I have very high CPU usage, and constant capped-out disk usage.
Over the course of the past few days I have reinstalled Windows 10, updated drivers, completely formatted my previous hard-drive, and just today I received a new SSD. However, my problem STILL persists, and I'm all out of ideas on what I need to in order to solve this.

My Motherboard is an ASUS Z97-P with an Intel i5-4690K processor. If you need more specifications, or a program to be run, then I would be happy to do so.

For further information, the system ran normally when booting from a Windows 8.1 hard-drive, and did have a blip of normal performance on Windows 10, but resumed misbehaving when the computer was re-started.

Answer:Constant 100% Disk Usage, 60-80% CPU usage. Both happen when idle.

in Task Manager sort by CPU usage and see what apps are responsible.

Hi, In November I purchased a new Lenovo Y50. It's the non-touch 1080p version with the GTX960m. Recently, I've had issues with the fans spinning up while the laptop is idle. I opened task manager, and there are random spikes of 100% disk usage on startup and sometimes when I leave the machine idle or I'm using Chrome. Recently, I've noticed strange spikes in CPU usage too, with occasional bouts of 20% usage for seemingly no reason.  I contacted support, and they weren't able to find any issues, but had me install Lenovo Solution Center and do a full run of the tests, which didn't find anything wrong. They also had me disable all non essential startup programs and see if the problem happened again, and it does. However, cpu and disk temperatures were normal, so I was told to just monitor the problem and see if anything changes.   My system's definitely not functioning properly. Startup is notably slow considering it has the 8gb ssd and I never had issues with the fans coming on when I first got it. I've heard that there are issues with the hybrid 8gb ssd/1 tb hdd, so I need some input on this. Why is this happening? Is it a hardware issue? Firmware? My case number is 8006295558. I would greatly appreciate some help from a rep or anyone who can give me a hand with the issue.

i saw that it's a common problem so i looked up some solutions and tried the following:

1- i changed the registry - ?HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management? and changed ?ClearPageFileAtShutDown? value to 1
2- adjusted windows 10 to "best performance" in system settings
3- i disabled many startup programs
4- i defragemented the C drive
5- uninstalled all the programs that i could
6- I disabled "Show me tips about Windows"
7- changed the power settings profile

Hi,Bought a G510 running w8.1 in May.  After 3 months of untroubled use I started getting all of the above error messages and problems. Restored to factory image. updated bios and updated drivers problems still persisted, all hardware tests were fine. Contacted Lenovo, laptop needed to be shipped to Germany, from UK as it appears there are no facilities in the UK??, to be examined.  The solution... Lenovo replaced the hard disk. Laptop was working fine again until a couple of weeks ago (about 3 months elapsed since original repair!!)  and exactly the same problems have returned.  The joke is I dont even use the laptop seriously as I dont trust it, and it spends 99.9% of its life as an expensive web browser machine. Surely the drive hasn't failed again, are they really that bad, or does the real problem lie somewhere else? Either way I'm totally unimpressed, no doubt having to send the laptop off for another 10 day holiday in Europe. :-( Anybody got any suggestions whats happening here?  Many thanks

Maybe you can have someone analyze dump files and figure out what's causing this issue.  You can wait for one of the staff to reply or you can ask at Microsoft Answers as well.

Hello, I have been trying to overcome this issue of 100% disk and CPU usage for quite some time before but no solution has worked. It is especially bad when i start my laptop or when i turn it on after hibernation. I tried using this https://chaladi.me/2013/10/11/how-to-fix-windows-8-100-disk-usage-issue/and i have also resetted my laptop to factory version so now its empty, but it is still facing this issue.  How can I stop this problem? Much thanks!!

My laptop (Lenovo Y500 Laptop | Lenovo US) has a 1TB 5400rpm hard drive C: and it also has a 24GB chached SSD D:. The link only shows a 16, but mine was 24. Today, I left my computer idle while I was at class (I'm in college) and when I came back it was frozen on the start up screen Lenovo Logo. As customary with computer problems, I turned it off and turned it on again. It booted up fine, maybe the tiniest bit slow, but nothing really different from the norm. But, when I opened up Chrome, my entire computer froze up after about five seconds, and I had to force shut down. This happened about 10 times (not just with Chrome, but with explorer and Task Manager too). Weird thing is, I only got one BSOD, for MEMORY_MANAGEMENT. When it magically started up without immediately freezing after the first click, I scanned for viruses--nothing changed. I CCleaned the temp files and registry--still nothing. I checked for fragmentation--0% fragmented. Once I finally got Task Manager open, I started thoroughly checking all the tabs. Here's what I found:
Attachment 51822
See how Disk 1 has C: AND D: ? I'm 100% sure that D: used to be on Disk 0. After some more freezing and rebooting, I discovered that Disk 1 maxes out active time to 100% really, really easily. Average response time maxed over 1000. Actually, I'm surprised my computer hasn't frozen since I started typing this post. It's that bad.

I have not done a restore point because I thought it probably wouldn't help, since I haven't ins... Read more

I am encountering a problem that is crippling my laptop. Over the past weekend I have been expierencing my laptop coming down to a standstill in processes it takes nearly two minutes to open up a page on chrome and running a game... forget about it. When I open up task manager it shows that 100% of my disk is being used but when I look at the processes using it all I see is System 0.1 MB/s. When i go into the performance tab of task manager and click on disk it reads:

Active time: 100%
Average Response Time: 0 ms then it spikes to a random # in the thosands

Answer:100% Disk System Disk Usage with only 0.1 MB/s

Exactly the same problem - Acer Aspire One.
I was having performance problems and ran chkdsk which found some bad clusters. Next thing I know, I restart and Windows won't come up. I could get a cmd prompt going and copied out my files and reset the system. Still nothing. Finally got it going by turning it on and plugging in a recovery flash drive. Completely reinistalled 8.0. Installed 126 updates. Installed 8.1. Installed 26 updates. And now I'm smack in the 100% disk usage.
Tried setting Virtual Memory, which was small.

Hi all,

I'm having a bit of trouble with Windows 8 on my laptop (I've named my laptop Romulus for future reference in this thread). First off, let me give you a brief history on Romulus' journey thus far:

1.) Bought pre-built from ACER with Windows 8 64-bit installed.
2.) After playing around with it for a bit, I formatted the C drive (deleting all partitions) and installed Windows 7.
3.) Hoping to test out the new Windows 8.1, I reinstalled Windows 8 (a clean install from Microsoft this time... not the original bundled version from ACER). I have yet to install 8.1.

This is where I've noticed a few problems. Specifically, my CPU and Disk usage keep spiking to 100% for no apparent reason. Literally right after booting Romulus, before running any programs/apps, I see these spikes. I boot up, go straight to the desktop, fire up Task Manager, and watch sadly as the performance graphs tease me with those tall lines. The CPU spikes only last for a second or two and usage generally stays pretty low, but I'd still like to know why it's jumping like that. Disk usage spikes to 99-100% more frequently and stays there a bit longer. I've noticed perhaps very slight performance problems and some mouse lag, but I haven't been able to prove a correlation here.

Regarding drivers, these problems arose without any drivers installed (straight Windows 8 installation). Thinking the obvious, I installed all of Romulus' drivers listed on the ACER web page for this model, but the problems persist... Read more

I have always had performance issues on my low-end laptop (core i3, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Windows 8.1).
As a heavy browser (+20 tabs on two browsers at any given moment), I've always blamed my laptop "freezes" on high RAM usage, I was wrong. Even with 30 or 40 tabs, RAM usage is rarely above 60 or 70%, while I have recurrent 100% disk usage peaks (especially after boot-ups).
My real-time AV is Avast Internet Security with hardened aggressive mode enabled, whenever I have a slowdown, I see Avast processes causing 100% disk usage. I've just disabled hardened aggressive mode, and it looks like things are a little better now.
I've looked it up on Google, I found many lists of AVs ranked by RAM usage, but only a few topics with conflicting feedback about disk usage. Some said WD had a very low disk usage, others claimed Bitdefender, Avast, Avira, Webroot, Norton, NOD32 etc. had a low disk usage.
How does Avast compare to other AVs in disk usage department? Was the hardened aggressive mode the cause
of high disk usage? And if so, is Avast without hardened aggressive mode worth it? What's the internet security solution with the lightest disk usage?

Answer:AVs with low disk usage?

if u want a av with low disk usage go with webroot. But i would go with SecureAPlus. Whitelisting software+12 av engine in the cloud.

Question: disk usage

how do i see hard drive usage in a circle graph?

Answer:disk usage

If you mean how much space is being taken up, go to Computer, right click the disk and select properties.

If you mean Disk usage, type "resource monitor" without quotes into your start menu search, click it, and in the overview tab, find Disk. This is not a circle graph, but I wouldn't know why you would want a circle graph for something like this.

Hope this helps

Question: 100% Disk Usage

For the past week or so my computer has begun acting increasingly odd. When opening programs my disk usage will spike up to 100% and my computer will freeze. sometimes I have to restart to be able to use it again. I've tried several things such as anti-malware and messing with executables that exacerbate disk usage. none of these things has helped

Answer:100% Disk Usage

Hi @Ecvalor!

One thing you can try in order to fix the 100% Disk Usage is to disable Superfetch (if you're using Windows 8 or 10). In order to do that you can follow the steps in this article:
http://www.technipages.com/windows-enable-disable-superfetch

If this doesn't help with the issue, then I'd suggest to make a backup of your most important data on another location and then run a diagnostic test on the HDD so you can see what its health is currently. You can use the manufacturers tool in case there is such available in the official manufacturers website since it's tuned to the specific firmware of the drive. For instance, if you have a WD drive download Data Lifeguard Diagnostics from here:
http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=3O5mw0

Once the results are ready feel free to upload some screenshots so I can take a look.

Answer:Disk Usage 100%

Nothing wrong with that.
Windows can be doing a lot of scheduled tasks on Power up, Indexing, updates etc. On a new PC a lot of that is going on.

You need to look at other Tabs in the Task Manager - App History, Start-up, Processes. Click the Disk column to sort and identify the worst offenders then go to that software and do some configuring where possible.

Again in the Processes Tab expand the details and you will be able to suss out possibilities.

For example in App history stuff. You can go the Apps and stop live tile updates obviously on the ones you don't use or uninstall them.

That's what you would expect on starting Photoshop. Again probably doing some of it's own indexing, updating, loading modules etc or something like that. Most software can be configured to an extent.

No idea why you are fiddling around with system performance, That's Windows memory management.

Hi guys

I also have the same problem, my disk usage is often at 100%, and the largest process is no more than 2mb.
I'm currently using Asus U24E laptop, i3-2330m with 4gb memory.
I bought this laptop years ago and start using windows 8 since December 2012, everything is normal until today I saw my laptop is pretty laggy,
and when I check the task manager, the disk usage is often 100%,
so I can hear the sound of my running HDD, also I can feel a little vibration on the laptop because of that

I've looked for some solutions on the internet but I still have the problem:
Change my SATA port to ahci --> not working
Restore my system using system restore --> not working
Disable antivirus, antimalware, etc --> not working

Wish I could find out how to solve it would be really help

Welcome to Tech Suport Guy
1. I find it hard to connect the install of 8 in December, even if it was the end of December and this problem arising today
However I see there are numerous recommendations before installing 8 on that computer, not least of which is the warning about the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver and indeed if you check each download as I have just done a most positive and definite recommendation to update the BIOS before installing 8.
http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/Superior_Mobility/U24E/

2. The situation outlined above clearly arises from the fact that the computer was originally sold before Windows 8, so therefore it must be prepared for 8.

3. Check resource monitor as per my screenshot AND what processes are shown in the top pane of the window

My disk usage always goes to 100% because of this process "wsappx" with a very high disk usage at startup with  10-30+ mb/s but after 10-15 minutes it lowers down to 0 mb/s and then after a few minutes it goes up again.

That file's not part of Windows 7.  However you neglected to mention what version you're running or the make and model of your computer.  You could run Malwarebytes and your antivirus program in Safe Mode if you don't know what this thing is.

Question: Disk usage

Hi,

My Win Vista machine seems to add or delete up to 1Gb of data on a daily basis. I have two 50G hard drives and it is the C: drive (the main one for the PC) that is displaying this activity. I basically use the PC to check personal emails and little else, so I am surprised by the disk memory changes each day. Is there a way for me to see what files are changing or being added or deleted from the disk on a daily basis? I tried to see this with Windows Explorer, but it does not show any large files with recent edit dates. So, I am thinking that there must be a better way.

Thanks for your help with this.

Question: 100% disk usage.

As the title says my pc is bugged with the 100% disk usage issue.

The things I've tried so far are:
1. Disable BITS, Superfetch and Windows search services. Although BITS seems to gets enabled back on its own after a while.
2. Performed a chkdsk /f/r to fix the system errors.
3. Switched windows updates from automatic to manual (not sure if that helps much).

I've read through some other threads but could not find the correct solution. Is there something else that I'm missing which could possibly fix the issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Answer:100% disk usage.

Welcome to the forum. If you open task manager click at the top of disk it will sort it into order so you can then see what's using the disk it can be a short term thing while it builds it's index

Answer:Disk usage 100%

Hi Thank you. So this suggests lots more stuff is loading in normal mode. I use the Piriform tools, and Ccleaner may very well help, as would Dfraggler. Then I get a more adventurous and use Sysinternals, which has lots of proggies that you dont need, but is small overall and wont be a burden.  AND you can delete it when you have finished with it. Ccleaner can look for duplicates, clear out cache and trash, uninstall stuff and (accept the backup for registry entries) tidy your registry. Sysinternals; Autoruns then Load Order and Pagedfrg are the primaries. If in doubt please ask.

Question: 100% Disk Usage

Hi there,

Recently, my laptop keeps spiking to 100% disk usage.
I've tried disabling Superfetch and Windows Search, adjusting the virtual memory, checking if I have the AHCI controller, check disk, none of it worked.
The only thing I haven't tried is System Restore (since I only noticed this after the last update) - I tried it, but it didn't work because it said the drive might be corrupt, and it still didn't work after chkdsk.
Any other ideas?

Thanks

Question: 100% disk usage

Hi!

I recently had a power failure while playing DotA 2 and now my fan/harddrive is making a weird noise.

Resource Monitor points that my C: drive (My only one) is running at 100%. Mostly it is being used by MsMpEng, which should be Windows Defender. It shows it scanning stuff (C:\Users\-----\Documents\Games Downloads\StarMade.exe). When I open Windows Defender it however doesn't show it scanning anything.

I am really worried. PLEASE HELP

Answer:100% disk usage

Hi gCoreByte, is this still happening? The reason I ask is I recently did a clean install of 8.1 and saw the same - Defender was using all Disk (and CPU actually) it could for several hours. So was the indexing service. Once it had finished it all settled down.

I don't think you necessarily need to be worried but if it is still happening please post a picture from task manager details tab.

Answer:100% disk usage

Go to your "tile" screen, and type "Disk Cleanup", then click the icon for this program. Let it run through and it will tell you where you can save disk space. Be sure to click the "Clean Up System Files" button also (requires admin rights), as this will clear out old windows update backups as well.

All the time the ram and disk usage is around 90% to 100% and sometime windows even hangs up while using firefox only.I need to use firefox and some light programs only.
I have installed 2GB RAM

Answer:90% RAM usage and 100% Disk

The RAM use isn't necessarily a problem. All modern operating systems (Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux) will automatically grab as much RAM as they can for caching purposes to improve system performance. In your case, the IGP on your CPU is reserving 512MB of your 2GB for itself, so you effectively only have 1.5GB of RAM. The OS will automatically release memory used for caching if needed by some other program. From the screenshot you posted, you only just booted the system so it's not necessarily out of the ordinary that your computer would have a lot of disk activity, especially on an A4 based system. That should settle down after a time.

However, on such a low end system you should make a point of limiting the number of programs you have running, making sure to use a lighter weight AV program and even go through the Black Viper "guide" to Windows Services and turn off the ones you aren't going to need. You can click on the name of each service to get a brief explanation of what it is and does so you if it's an optional service, you can turn it off if you're not going to use it.

Question: 100% Disk Usage

Hi there.
I upgraded recently to Windows 10. I don't know it this has anything to do with my problem or not. I hope you folks can tell me.

I run lots of large file for my hobby, Photography, which I've noticed is slowing my PC down to a walking pace.
My photos are one drive E. When I use Task Manager to check, it shows a usage of 100% on drive E while I access my photos.

I've tried compressing and defragging the drive.
Does anyone know why this should happen and what I can do about it?

See attached image

Answer:100% Disk Usage

What size is your E drive? Is it a physical hard drive or just a partition?

Windows needs at least 15% free space to run efficiently.

Have you tried moving some of your files to another drive/partition and defragging?

Screenshot: Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

Answer:100% usage on disk

Hi, you have a lot going on there.
1. Tiworker.exe is triggered by Windows update, so it seems possible a Windows update is being applied.
2. Norton (n360.exe) is clearly active.
3. Edge is using a huge amount of resources.
4. SearchUI.exe is part of Cortana, and is also active.

Then you have svchost.exe - perhaps related to one of the above.

1. Before you downloaded this game, was your system behaving normally? I.e. could you be confident CPU and disk use was low?
If so, do you have a system restore point available set before your game was installed?

If you do, I suggest you try using it.

If not, first try uninstalling that game, and enable services you have disabled.

Then please post a screenshot of your task manager
(Screenshots are most helpfully posted using the 'Insert Image' icon above your post to the left of the video icon).

Also then please post a screenshot of your task manager in Safe Mode for reference if you still have problems in normal mode.

Note: to organise the columns of the task manager, click the tab at the head of a column so items with greatest resource use are at the top.

Please also post a screenshot of your Update History (Settings, Update and... , Update History

Question: Disk Usage

I have a laptop computer running Windows XP. I recently had a disk usage error that stated I had used up my free disk space. I deleted some files to get it back to where I could use the computer. When I check the properties on my C drive, it shows that I have used 129 of 142GB. However, when I check each individual folder in the C drive, it shows that I am using maybe 25 to 30 GB. What could be taking up all of the disk space?

Answer:Disk Usage

Probably a hibernation file or something similar. 129 is extremely large though even including the hibernation files and possible restore points.

My first suggestion would be to do a disk cleanup and defragmentation. After that see if you are still supposedly using 129 or really anything beyond say 40 gb. If you are start looking at other causes like a possible virus or error within windows.

Question: 100% Disk Usage

A week ago I did a completely fresh install of Windows 8 64 bit and everything was working great. When I booted up my laptop on Wednesday I noticed it was running terribly slow. When I opened task manager I saw that disk usage was at 100% despite the combined total of data transfer being 0.8MB/s.

The problem occurs constantly if I set my laptop power mode to balanced but only occurs intermittently at high performance. I've run a chkdsk and everything is showing up fine and bizarrely there is no slowdown whatsoever on safe mode.

Any idea what I may have done wrong?

I am concerned about the amount of C-disk space that has been used.  The intalled software is Vista, MS Office Home & Bus 2007, Quicken, Familie Tree maker 2008, Adobe Element 6.  This takes up 4.076 GB according to the "Programs & Features" list.  Files take up 26.510 GB. This amounts to about 30 GB usage.  When I look at disk properties I have 9.16 GB free space left. On my 120 GB drive 60 GB are unaccounted for.  I find it hard to believe that Vista takes that much space.  The disk is formated in NTFS.  Can anyone tell me if this is normal? Thanks ... picpop

picpop, welcome to the forum, I believe Rescue and Recovery has been nibbling away at your free space. R&R has a standard factory setting so that it will back-up your system every wednesday around mid-day.Go into start-programs-think vantage-rescue and recovery, click on show all back-ups and you will see when and how many back-ups have been made. If you wish to you can copy the backips to somewhere else and then delete them. You can also cancel or change the scheduled back-ups if you wish to.Hope this helps

Hello,

I am running Windows 10 Pro. Over the last couple of days, for some reason, the OS reports 100% disk usage, even when no application is apparently running. It was quite alright a few days ago, but troublesome over the past 2 days. I had assumed it was running some background task, and would become normal, but the abnormally high disk usage persists even after the machine has been running for half an hour.

In this period, no Windows updates were installed, and only a scheduled checkpoint was created 4 days ago.

If I try and restore to the checkpoint during boot, I get an error, saying the PC needs to be repaired. If I try it from the recovery option in Windows 10, it does not shut down for a restart, just keeps on the blank screen saying "Initializing restore". The entire time, according to the indication light, the disk seems busy.

I tried disabling superfetch and background intelligent transfer service, to see if it would help, but did not work. The spike in disk usage is not specific to anything, sometimes it is the system, other times the malware service...

I do not wish to reset the laptop, as I had quite a few things installed, but I do not have the installation media for those anymore, and so would not be able to install them again after the reset.

I have the installation iso for Windows 10. The laptop is Dell 17R SE 7720. I had upgraded to Windows 10 Pro almost 2 months ago, and it had been running fine.

Kindly advise.

Hello, i have been years reading in this forum, but i have never been a member, now i need your help!
I have a laptop (Lenovo z50-70) (Bought 2 years ago)
Specs:
Intel core i5 7200U 2.5GHz - 2.71GHz
RAM: 6 GB
64 bit windows 10 home
1000 gb Hard disk
Asus page drivers

The past weeks my computer has been getting slower, specially after turning it on or coming from hibernation, it takes about half an hour for the pc to get usable. Sometimes it doesnt get better and takes a lot to open programs and in certain cases it also freezes and gets unresponsive so i have to force shut down. And when the computer turns on it takes about 20 minutes to get to home screen, sometimes it enters the "scanning disk for errors" screen before home screen. Also in task manager the Disk is always at 100% even with no programs open.
I have tried:
-Disk defrag
-Chkdisk comand (No errors found)
-Disabling the services (Superfetch, etc... )
-Full System Scan with bitdefender

I?d like to add that in all users the computer is always at 100% disk usage and starts up and boots very slow, but the freezing only happens on my user. The administrator user is fine.

Thank you for your time!

hi guys

my disk usage is blocked at 100/100 and pc is burning like hell and i don t find what is making it

i m adding some screenshots if someone can help me to find out the issue:

Answer:Disk usage at 100/100

Few things you can check:
go to: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows and look for the file
Windows.edb and check the size of this file. This is a database file associated with Windows Search feature. If it's too big, sometimes it can grow up to many GB's then it might cause high disk usage when Windows Search trying to rebuild the Search index. You can delete this file but first you need to disable the Windows Search service then re-enable after deletion.Run Task Manager->Startup and disable everything then reboot the PC to see if it fixes the problem then re-enable one by one, reboot until the problem occurs again, then that's the culprit.Run Task Manager->Details, then right click on the Title->Select Columns and put a check on I/O Reads, I/O Writes, I/O read bytes, I/O write bytes then click OK. Click on the Title to sort by I/O Read, I/O Write to find out which process utilizing the Disk I/O most and take appropriate action.

Question: 100% Disk Usage

I upgraded to Windows 10 a few months ago. Immediately I began experiencing very long start times (~5 minutes). I resolved the start time issues by doing a clean install and erasing all programs/files on my PC. After that, the 100% disk usage issues continued. I have disabled Windows tips, disabled SuperFetch & PreFetch, and attempted to monitor exactly what is causing this without success. Looking through solutions, it seems that I have gone through all suggested actions yet the issue persists. My PC can be booted for an hour with only Edge running and yet disk usage continues at 100%. Running on 8.1, I never experienced any slow start times or any slow usage. If someone could please assist, it would be much appreciated.

On the task manager you should be able to see what process is using CPU cycles. Sort the order to show which is using the maximum by clicking the column twice.
This should give you an idea of what is causing the issue.

Question: Disk Usage

Hello all, I have some disk problems it may seem very irrelevant, though I need the windows to be below 8GBs is at 8.6 now and with the removal of features and optimisation it will be there though I have questions about some folders to perhaps drive it down even further.

These are my top usages above 12mb:

Blue: To be optimised, just a cleanup of unneeded files/folders to remain. (ignore)
Red: To be deleted, no need for these.
Orange: To be or all ready symlinked.
Purple: Proposed to be symlinked, if you think my decision is bad tell me.
Green: Nothing to be done
Grey: Need more information

Its getting worse and worse by the day. The disk usage goes 100% whenever i add a tab, minimize a game. This never used to happen before i tried several tips to reduce the usage which made even worse. I have tried probably everything except buying another hardrive which i wont cause mine is pretty much new. Can you suggest maybe a tip that would actually fix this problem? I tried turning off suggested services, search, power options, ending tasks...

I keep getting 100 disk usage. Its always slowing me computer down... I searched and searched for a solution and came across many off which to no avail.
Its always the anti virus which uses the most disk usage... no matter what brand, this is my 5th anti virus I installed...

Answer:I have 100 disk Usage all the time :(

Is it possible that Kaspersky is "actively" doing a system scan? How long since you installed Kaspersky, and did you allow enough time for it do a complete scan of all your files? If yes, I would remove Kaspersky (verify that disk activity stops) then report back to this forum.

You may want to try Malwarebytes. Many here recommend this product (they have a free version too).

Hello!

After the latest Win 10 update, my disk usage started to hit 100% every time after booting the computer and it doesn't go down. I've tried to find a solution online, but nothing was helpful. In the end, I was pretty desperate, so I ended the process on Task Manager and it did went down to a normal percentage of 0-1%, but it always comes back when I boot my computer again. Also, virus and malware scan was clean. Is there any way to resolve this issue? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have Lenovo G500, i3, 2,4GHz CPU and 4 GB RAM. It's year and a few months old.

Hi,
I have just bought a new laptop from Dell for my girlfriend. She said she was having problems with the mouse cursor. It kept getting stuck on the right side of the screen. I rebooted the PC and went into task manager. Disk usage was at 100% for a couple of minutes and then recovered. I have taken a screen shot of Task Manager and resource manager and have included Bellarc also.

Please can you help? Thanks.

Hi

I see this a lot and with 3rd party security apps, so a quick test is boot to safe mode (F8 and safe mode with networking) and see how the PC works, if not uninstall Avira and see how the PC works.

For some reason the last few days my disk usage in the task manager is always showing as 99% or 100%, but when adding up the amount of disk apparently being used, it only reaches about 2MB/s at it's highest, usually closer to 1MB/s. Hi,

My Toshiba Satellite laptop sometimes goes up to 100% disk usage for no apparent reason. It typically happens 2-3 times per day and for around 5-15 minutes each time. Here's a screenshot of what I'm seeing in Resource Monitor and Task Manager (side by side, respectively):

As you can see, "System" is the culprit here. So the whole "end process" thing isn't going to help me here.

This issue usually happens when I'm playing Minecraft, but not always. The apps I'm using do not appear to impact the duration or frequency of the issue at all, but if it helps I generally have Skype, Minecraft, and Google Chrome open. Sometimes, this issue occurs when I have nothing but a webpage open. Closing apps does not appear to help.

My laptop's otherwise in great shape; I treat it well, update whenever it asks me to, browse carefully, etc. This has been a problem since I bought it a year ago and has neither improved nor gotten worse.

Anyway, I spoke with someone tech-savvy about this and she said it's a "known Windows 8 issue" and that there isn't anything I can do. After several updates, however, this is still a problem. Any information would be nice, including an explanation of exactly what this mysterious "System" is doing.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Windows 8 - 100% Disk Usage

In Resource Monitor, put a check mark by System to filter the entries in the window below. Then in the windows below, expand the column that shows what is being written to or read from.

Do you see anything that stands out? Does the list slowly shrink as the process continues?

Have you tied it to an event, such a time of day or time between occurrences? Do you ever leave the machine idle for a period of time and if so, does it go into any type of maintenance process?

Question: High Disk Usage

For the past few days my disk usage randomly goes up to 99-100%. It's noisy and slows everything down and is very annoying. There do not appear to be any processes taking up the disk space and I can't figure out what is causing it. Then sometimes it goes back down to normal and everything is fine. I have run malware scans and that didn't help. Here is what I have:

Windows 10 Home
3.80 gigahertz AMD FX-4300 Quad-Core
8 GB memory
Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 [Hard drive] (1000.20 GB)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti
I use Comodo Internet Security

What else do I need to check when this happens to figure out the cause?

Answer:High Disk Usage

Don't you mean CPU usage?
Open Task Manager, check Show processes from all users, and check what process is hogging the CPU.

Question: High Disk Usage

Hi all, I'm struggling with finding things to fix my high disk usage. I've spent many months searching the internet and doing all the listed suggestions like disabling SuperFetch, Windows Defender, Updating drivers, ect. and still I'm stuck with a high disk usage. Here's a screen shot I took immediately following a restart and opening up to a new Firefox window.

I have noticed Service Host: Local System takes up quite a bit of disk usage and that if I close it and let it open back up all by itself then it immediately makes my disk usage drop into a much more manageable 40-60% usage range. But eventually after a while it maxes out again and I have to close it out again. It's an annoying step just to be able to use my computer.

Also, I have noticed that after working with my mom's computer today, that her disk usage when no programs are running is only like 5%. Makes me wonder why my computer can have no programs running but my disk usage never drops below 30% and sits in the 40-60% range with spikes up over 75%.

I honestly don't know enough about computers to do much more than I already have without causing major issues. BTW, just a couple weeks ago I had to do a Windows reinstall, not a complete reinstall, just the basic reinstall they allow you to do on Windows 10 where you still keep all your personal files. Ever since that a lot of times when I try to open a process like Run or Task Manager I'll get an error message that it can't open and then I do it again and it wil... Read more

Answer:High disk usage on new PC

When a new Windows 8 system is first booted the OS will spend a lot of time downloading updates, syncs with other devices and OneDrive, updating tile apps and performing things like scheduled anti-virus definition downloads and scans, plus disk defragmentation/optimization. All this should calm down after a time.

What's happening guys,
I've decided to finally let the experts assist me since I've been really yanking my nerves and wasting time on maybe bad thought solutions.
Okay so the issue is I'm getting a constant high disk usage without even having anything running
here's a screenshot of my problem

And well, so far I've tried the ''deactivate 'windows search' and 'superfetch''' and it hasn't really done the trick
Also I resetted my pc yesterday, as of now I'm running a clean install of Windows 10.
Did the ''turn off notifications from Windows''
and really nothing, I've also defrag quite some times with Defraggler and DiskDefrag and nothing.

Could you guys lend me a hand? I really need this laptop for school.
Thanks for reading
*EDIT* It's a problem since my system is acting very unresponsive and some times freeze of applications occur

Answer:Very high disk usage

Ok, so guys
I'm going to go buy a new hard drive, maybe even a SSD
do you think I'm doing a good thing?
Over some tests/scans by hard drive health status I got a similar factor each, which is that my hard drive has ''bad sectors'' and also has a bad health, here's a screenshot:
also I'm already downloading Windows 10 and creating a USB installation stick

I REAAAAALLY need someone to reply

Ok, so i also have been having this problem with 100% disk usage and its been extremely aggravating as absolutely nothing fixes it....

I start up the computer and logon and immediately it shows 100% usage:

After maybe 4-10 minutes or so it dies down:

Then it will spike back to 100% whenever i open ANYTHING, it stays at 100% for maybe 20-40 seconds after the window pops up:

I suspect the culprit to be System and Compressed memory but haven't found any fixes that I haven't tried yet online.

There are several threads relating to this on the forum - just search for

Hey

For some reason, my disk, when i open my computer and at some other point, always spikes up to 100% for a few minutes.
This happens when :

at the start, Something called System and compressed memory always make my pc go to 100% disk usage. Later on, there are all those Service Host going up to 100% and something called RzStatsManager

When i open norton or when i download something new it also goes to 100%, each time I open google chrome too and Steam make the disk go to 100% at the start and every time i open it it goes to 20% and the system memory goes to 80%
All these times, the disk spiked at 100% for a few minutes.

I disabled all my notification, each time i open my PC i disable Windows search and superfetch but it spikes up every time. What can I do?

Thanks

Hi All,

I'm not very technical with these problems at all, but I've recently upgraded to windows 10 and fount that my disk usage was spiking up and down to 100% (gradually building up over time)

I thought this was a windows 10 bug, so I downgraded back to windows 8, did a factory reset and everything.

I'm happy at windows 8, for what I use my PC for it's perfectly okay but I thought i'd give it a try.

-I will be able to provide more information later, along with pictures so sorry if this is a little vague, but wanted to get something on here cause it's bothering me! don't really want to trawl through support hotlines etc.

*if there's anything you guys need to help me out let me know and i'll post all relevant information later on

Some game applications that I run, trigger the spike. Just sat on my desktop everything looks okay

I have an alienware X51 - Purchased back in 2012

*Another thing that might be worth adding, after updating to windows 10 I had net framework errors on trying to shut down, these have gone now but I'm not sure if these had anything to do with it? it's all come on from nowhere, my browser seems slow and will crash every so often.

My PC is relatively clean, I have no music, no videos or ANYTHING; just a few apps here and there.

I'm just stuck! I've had a Google around, there's so many different fixes and options; i'm hoping it's something so very simple.

Thankyou!

Hello,
I'm here to ask for an advice for this new issue occurred with my vaio.
A recently made a system refresh for fixing some other bugs but after this my PC became extremely slow.
Everything seems to go in the right way in refresh, no errors, no blocks, nothing wrong at all.
This issue is related to disk usage that in prompt is always very high, always greater than 90%, normally capped at 100%.
What is using my disk are 2 processes of windows, not 3rd part softwares: system and another processo including lots of windows functions.
I googled this and found a lot of people having same problem and, according to those threads:
1 i tried to disable windows search from services
2 no driver issues, my PC came out with w8 and i never updated them, so drivers are the same I had before the system refresh
3 avg installed now, but also before refresh and never gave problema
4 no bloatware, malware or viruses. After refresh I uninstalled a lot of Sony bleeps but I think this bug was there Aldo before uninstall, I simply thought that slow was related with those software, it wasnt.
Any ideas? Any system scan to post?
Thanks for reading and help,
Sssank

Question: Heavy Disk usage

Hello,

I noticed the hard drive light on my wife's laptop going Thursday evening and no one had been using it for a few hours. I left it overnight and it was still chugging away Friday morning. We were out of town and the computer off until today at which time I noticed it again.

I went through the "Read Me First" instructions and the hard drive light is still flickering more than I would expect, but it is better. There were a large number of items found, so I thought I would attach my logs thinking there was still something affecting the system.

Note, when I ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - I accidentally clicked the Remove selected before I had finished clicking all the items. I wasn't sure what to do so I ran it again - made sure I had checked everything and then I clicked Remove Selected again. I attached both of the log files to this post and I will attach the MG logs to a follow up post.

If I need to start over from scratch because of that I understand. I will do that.

Thanks!

I'm having an hard time with my 3 weeks new lenovo laptop and I need some help. When I bought the pc it came with windows 8.1 and even then I stareted having major lag and issues related to keyboard and interface responsivity in general. As I found out in some forum discussion the problem was caused by a windows 8 service that frequently occupied the disk write time, disabling the service helped making my brand new pc usable, even though I experencied some lag time to time. Time passed and yesterday I decided that windows 8 is not for me, so I turned the bios boot to legacy and I've installed my copy of windows 7, hoping to not experience lag anymore. Unfortunatly this didn't resolve my lag problem that now I think might be caused by a not properly working hdd. Reading discussion online about people that solved this problem only buying a brand new SSD drive only drives my fear, because I can't invest in that. Reading on the forum brought up a lot of related problems and I hope someone can give me some direction about what to do, because at times while programming or using multiple chrome task, the system becomes unstable and useless. This is the name of my hdd: st500lt012-1dg142 and these are the tests I did: - chkdsk said I've no problem in file system or hdd faults- checked the drivers: somehow I saw that on w8.1 intel rapid storage tecnology was installed, but with a small check I noticed that my hdd is not SSD even a bit (I think), trying to install int... So, that is what I am in search for now. Is there any disk usage analyzer available for Windows?

Answer:Disk usage constantly (almost) to 100%

Hi there
Check out things like -- Page file, Hibernation (Sleep) options, Virtual memory and paging file sizes etc, start up services.

HDD on laptops can be poor performers but that is another issue.

Your computer should really have a minimum of 4GB RAM these days but some machines will work OK with 2GB if you don't want to run more than one or two applications together.

If you are editing large photo files (photoshop) check the use of the scratch files.

I don't speak Italian but from your illustration it would appear that your HDD is a SLOW 5400 RPM one with ZERO cache size which will be a really rotten performer.

I'd swap that for an SSD -- but you need to provide more info of your machine set up first to fix the current problem.

Cheers

Since I got my pre-installed laptop my disk usage has been 100% on the system.
I've tried disabling the superfetch and windows search services to no avail. I've read somewhere online that these services could potentially be the cause, sadly that didn't work.

So now I'm installing the windows performance toolkit in order to gain more system information.
I'm running the windows performance recorder.

After it's done I'll update the thread with the new information.

Anyone has the same kind of issue or knows a solution to this issue? Please comment.

After a system restore on my laptop, the Disk Usage has been stuck at 100%. I've browsed the internet and tried every-which solution to no avail. Would anyone happen to know a way of fixing this without solutions like "disable BITS" or "check the Resource Manager" - I've never had to deal with the resource manager and find it somewhat intimidating to say the least.

Thanks for any and all help.

Answer:Windows 8.1 Disk Usage 100%

First go to Disk Clean up right click and run as Administrator and when it's done place a check next to everything and clean your system (it can take quite a while). Then go to Defragment and Optimize Drives and defragment everything... shut down(not restart) and reboot 3 times This cleans and organizes your disk. The 3 reboots lets windows put all programs and start files to the beginning of your C: drive on the outside of your disk.
