Office tries to install when running other programs

Question: Office tries to install when running other programs

I'm running Win XP and I've just started having a strange problem. When I try to run certain programs (a chess game, an icon editing prog) or functions within a program (when I try and load an external script in a 3d graphics package) a window pops up saying that windows is preparing to install Microsoft Office or Roxio (both of these are programs I do have installed but I installed them months ago, long before this problem started happening). If I hit cancel the installation backs off then starts again. I have to hit cancel several times before it stops and the prog that I was trying to run opens up. If I let the 'installation' run it's course it tells me I need to insert the disk. Is it possible there are temporary install files that didn't get properly removed hiding somewhere and are being called inadvertantly?
Any suggestions would be great.

Preferred Solution: Office tries to install when running other programs

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am getting the following error when I try to reinstall a custom setup office XP install on a windows 2000 machine.

"OFFXP: Setup Detects Office XP Running When You Attempt to Install Office XP"

I had the uninstall the office xp on this machine through add/remove programs because it was crashing alot. The custom install works fine on all other windows 2000 and xp machines.

I found the following error in MS knowledgebase
article 292497 (I can't post the link because I'm a new member)

It says to to hit ignore. If I hit ignore it does install but it doesn't install with the correct options for the custom install. (I have it set to not install outlook and it installs outlook, etc.) Obviously its not following the custom install.

Any ideas? I believe something is left on the pc from office when it was installed. I even ran the Removal Wizard on the Office XP Resource kit. It is supposed to remove everything left from previous versions. However, it must be missing something because I am still getting that error when I try to reinstall Office XP that is described above.

Current Office Pro 2003 user. Saved .pst files and used registered MS disc to load Office 2007 SB. Sucess except for Outlook with message "The operation failed due to an installation problem. Reinstall Outlook and try again. If problem persists, please reinstall".
Tried all disc options of reinstall, repair, add, etc. to no avail. (Outlook is displayed on Add/Delete with red cross!) Aware MS Technet states "Office Outlook 2007 cannot coexist with previous version of Outlook on the same computer". Removed outlook.exe (2003) but still no advance. Cannot see how to remove Outlook 2003 in totality.
Reason for buying Office 2007 was to try and avoid frequent crashes of Outlook 2003.

Before I delete Office Pro 2003 and try a virgin installation, of Office 2007 SB, your advice, please, Bellini.

one of my co-workers wants me to get rid of some viruses and install office 2010 home and student on her computer with the key she bought. her computer runs windows 7 64-bit. after backing up her data, i finally ended up doing a factory reinstall from the backup partition. so i downloaded all windows updates and installed antivirus and firewall software. then i downloaded the office 2010 trial and tried to install it. it seems to begin installing without any problems. then a splash screen for powerpoint appears. it says that its "processing" and does that for about 20 minutes and then there is a balloon that pops up saying that office is downloading files. after all that happens, an error message appears that says something like "powerpoint cannot be opened. please try again later or repair this software in the control panel" with no sort of error code. i then tried repairing it from control panel which claims to complete successfully. so i restart and try to install again and the same thing happens all over again. if i try opening word, excel, powerpoint or onenote the splash screen appears and does the same thing that i described powerpoint was doing. ive tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. i also tried installing the 60 day trial for office 2007 that came preloaded with the computer and then installing office 2010 over it. same thing happened. im really stuck on this one. i would really appreciate some help as ive never seen this kind of th... My office just upgraded to Microsoft 2010. I have a bunch of macros, all written in with Excel 2007. Some of them take a few minutes to run so I used to take care of email while waiting, but I can't do that. I can open Outlook, but can do nothing in it. Same with Word 2010. This was never a problem with Excel 2007.

I know we have the 64-bit version, as I can no longer use an Add-in I had previously. Don't know if this is an issue.

As my title indicates, I've got a few machines. They're all running nicely. (Well, except for the Surface, but that's just the way the surface is...).

I'm VERY interested in upgrading to Windows 10 when it is released, especially since MS states it'll be free. (I understand the benefit of a uniform user base, so MS wins if we all upgrade.) From what I hear, W10 should be an improvement over W7.

My question: with all my machines, the idea of clean installs and having to relicense and reinstall the huge number of 3rd party programs I have is daunting. In fact, I probably will not upgrade just to avoid that hassle.

Is there ANY way to perform an in-place OS upgrade? Meaning, all the installed programs stay installed?

I just installed Office 2k on two machines. Both running Windows 2000 also. The one machine that everything is working fine was installed with FAT files system. Thats the ONLY difference between the two machines. The one using NTFS does not work correctly. When trying to run Word/Excel, etc.. it comes up with the registration prompt. I click "yes" and get the following error "The Registration wizard cannot run because the system information it requires is either unavailable or incorrect" Which means so far my Office installation has been unusable. I am also unable to run/setup Outlook because it tells me I need to have admin access (which I am logged in under the main admin) I think both errors are because of the same problem somewhere. If anyone knows what is causing this or how to fix it please let me know!

HI all,

Really need help with this pretty fast. Im applying for a job and have had the application form emailed to me in .doc format.
Normally this wouldnt bee a problem as id just open it up in Open Office and away I go BUT this file came through all overlapped and I wont let me change it.

So I tried to download the Office 2010 trial from the MS website and it wouldnt install, got 3 seconds in and went wrong, tried it 4 or 5 time again and the same. Then I tried windows update and that wont work either, it comes up with an error.

Ive now tried to install Word Viewer and it also wont install??

Ive installed another couple of programs tonight to test and they installed fine!! Its just the MS programs that wont.

Any one have an idea of what might be causing this??

Answer:Solved: Cannot install Office 2010 trial or othe MS programs?

Word Viewer is a viewer and won't let you edit, so installing that won't do any good. As for the Office 2010 trial, what's the error?

I'm having several issues with my windows 7 PC. I've been trying to install a legit copy of Office 2010 from a genuine CD and it won't allow me, suggesting I don't have admin rights (I am the administrator). I was upgrading from Office 2007 and it screwed that up. I've uninstalled all existing versions of Office and it's still not letting me install.

The PC is generally very slow and laggy, and every time I start up it tells me something is wrong and runs check disk. I've done an FRST scan and posted the log below (not sure if this is relevant, I'll perform other scans if anyone can tell me what I need to do). Can anyone tell me what's wrong with the PC and how to fix it? Obviously I'd rather avoid formatting and starting again, although all my files are backed up... it's a pain to reinstall everything.

I am not sure if it is a bug, trojan, or etc.

I am running Vista Ultimate 64bit, I am having problems with the same message "Explorer has stopped running", and windows starts to search for a solution. It will even do this every minute or so with no programs running. Also, if you try to install a program, I get the same Explorer stopped running message, and the application will quit. I noticed it when it started with IPHelper had the issue, but I was able to get under control.

The vista sidebar will not open, and that closes up too with the same message.

Does anyone else has a similar situation, or a fix?

I posted a hijackthis log in the other thread, since I was not sure if this is a trojan or vista being a pain.

I tried to use the Search function, and it has been disabled for 2 days, at least on my end. I am looking for a tool to identify and determine how many running processes are necessary (currently, I run between 47-50), and how to stop the non-essential ones from running all the time, which makes my supposedly malware-free computer work slower than grass growing in December. Also, I can't figure out why certain programs, such as Microsoft Streets and Trips for example. It now asks for installation disks, when I never had one because it was already loaded when I bought the computer. It just doesn't make any sense anymore. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Excessive Running Processes, Some Programs Ask for Install Disk When I Never Had One!

47 to 50 is not bad. I have 45.

There is only a problem if legit or non legit processes are hogging your cpu. If they don't then stoping them won't speed up your pc.

Check your processes to see if any are using a high percentage of your cpu.

Hi, I have just resurrected a Dell Latitude D620 that I haven't used for 2 years and wonder if anyone can help me with 2 challenges?
1. The death march...: I replaced Windows XP with Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) - not an upgrade - and then installed all the updates, via Windows Update and also added SECUNIA to make sure - which says everything is updated.
Then I had to remove a file - 'Windows.old' - after the install as it took up most of the H/D.
Everything works well sometimes only - but then far too often everything suddenly runs VERY SLOWLY... taking a very long time to load programs and occasionally 'not responding' for a while, before working.
The H/D seems to often be running very fast in the background. Although the Processes shown running in Task Manager are minimal, the Process Monitor shows that the RAM is always at around 78% (with 110 faults?) and the drive running between 50 - 100%?
The H/D has 55GB Free of 75GB and with 1.00GB RAM.
This can last for a long or short time - and then suddenly for no apparent reason, everything works well and fast????
Maybe the install didn't remove all the XP and other stuff????
I have no idea what to do - and am surprised as this laptop is a workhorse and has always been excellent - Didn't have these problems with XP SP3 before?
2. Office Install: I then installed Office Small Business Edition 2003 back on to the (same) laptop using my original disk and Key.
That went fine until I opened WORD... I was then a... Read more

Ok, I am going crazy.
This problem started two days ago out of sudden.

I noticed that I could not see the running programs in my taskbar, searched alot for it and none of the solutions helped.
Then I realized that I cannot install application either, getting an error about the windowsinstaller, so I tried to reinstall it and got error that update.inf cannot be cheked due to some serive called cryphtography something I again searched the web and none of the solutions worked.
Then I noticed that I cant copy or paste either ...anywehere or in any application (so I cant even backup copy my files).

So then I gave up and thought that I will do repair. but the problem is that when I run "run a setup now and then F8 for accepting the license then I dont get the repair option. So I instead tried the second option which is to repair using recovery console and I did everything according to this manual from and no luck there either

Please help me I really dont want to do a clean install.

Sincerely Nina

Ok, here's my trouble..I am running in safe mode, when I am in norm mode system locks up fairly quickly after I try to access any program especially IE. I have tried to download and install Stopzilla and get a message telling me system admin has policies set into place preventing install. I am running XP home on a HP pavillion. So I have a couple of issues going on. I have ran Spy-bot and AVG. Spy-bot is clean but I do have a txt. file for AVG showing alot of not tested files and also have ran hijackthis, which at my level of experience I can't interpet the data due to lack of knowlege. I did notice from reading another post that I need to change the program name for(hijackthis). Is it to late, do I need to uninstall and rename it when reinstalling?

We ran MS Office repair on a Windows 10 computer running MS OFfice Home and Business 2013, and now all of the program files for MS office are missing from the system.

The system originally came with MS office pre-installed, so we activiated it over the internet. Because of this we don't have the installation files or the product key. How can we get MS office back on this machine without having to repurchase the software???

I have both Office 2003 and Office 2007 installed. I can use either or with no problems. But if I click on a file it will always open it with Office 2003. I have Office 2007 setup to run in Compatability Mode and always save the files in the .xls format. The only way I can open a file in Office 2007 is to go through the program and not just by double clicking the file. I have tried to change the Open With in the properties of the files but it changes back to Office 2003 after I set it to Office 2007. Any Ideas on how to make it always use Office 2007 as my default.

Answer:Running Both Office 2003 and Office 2007 help

Right click on the .xls file you want, and choose Open With. Select Excel 2007; then below the box with all the available programs, there should be a check box that says something like "Always use the selected program to open this type of file." Check that box, and it should always open w/Excel 2007.

hope it helps

I've been trying to fix my brother's computer for a while, but every Spy-bot and Ad-aware continuously find 60+ bad items and something has recently caused most programs to stop working completely that can be solved with a restart and crossed fingers. Recently a restart brought up a very colorful rendition of the screen that wasn't a good sign as I try to fix the computer. So I turn here. I'm pretty sure I got rid of the 'win antispyware 2005' malware he had running for the longest time. I had ZoneAlarm (deactivates the Windows default firewall) for a long time then had to uninstall it for Medal of Honor:Airbourne which required the windows firewall to be running (to add itself to the allow list). Then I got Jetico Personal Firewall and I've had Avast! On-Access scanner for the entire ordeal. I think that's about everything. Extra.txt is attached.

Edit: I tried the panda activescan. I downloaded the plug-in, but after 1.5 hours of running the scan it remained at 0%. If it's neccessary, I could run it overnight.

The past three days, it's happened about twice a day to me. Just at seemingly random times, my currently running programs stop working and attempting to open new programs just results in the program's icon being momentarily highlighted in the taskbar, and then it disappears, as if the program automatically closed itself. This even works for simple programs like Notepad or Paint. Any currently running programs usually crash or stop working. All of my tabs in Chrome will have the pages using Shockwave crash, and attempting to open any new tabs or navigate to new pages will just result in a white screen. The computer is fast and responsive on the desktop (ie, I can open and close the start menu and highlight programs on my desktop with a mouse rollover), and nothing on my computer is frozen, just not working.
This all happens just at one single moment when everything stops working right, and I have to manually shut down the computer, because going through Windows to shut down or log off does not result in anything. Upon startup, everything is back to normal. CTRL+ALT+DEL command results in a black screen with the cursor visible, but nothing happens.
I was recently infected with quite a bit of malware, but as far as I know, I got it all off. I don't know if this is was "malware" or just my computer being a bleep. What do you guys think?

Answer:Currently running programs stop working, and new programs won't start.

What malware did you find and remove?  What did you do to find and remove it?  You may not have gotten all of it.

I noticed this issue a little while back. As I shutdown/restart my laptop, I notice it switches to a secondary desktop that has been running programs.
A good example would be trying to open my Task Manager, I can Ctrl-Alt-Del and it will allow me to open Task Manager - however when I click on Task Manager, it opens on the Desktop running in the background.
I can't even access the Desktop in the background, it only shows up as I'm shutting down - closing programs that I tried opening awhile ago.

I really hope this makes sense.. it's getting frustrating.

Answer:Two desktops running at the same time. Background programs running.

It sounds like you have a virtual desktop.

This is not something that could 'just happen' in Windows 7. You would need to install a third party program to do this.

So if you did not install anything that might add virtual desktop capability, or this is not a situation where you inherited or obtained this computer from someone else and are not quite sure what is installed on it, then I would suggest first running virus and malware scans to start.

Recently, my MS Office got bugged by a virus problem, and I had to uninstall it and I cannot install it back!!

I was thinking, if I was ever in need of opening and editing an office file like .doc, .ppt, or OneNote files, are there any portable softwares that can open the files without needing to install them?
By that I mean, are there any software programs other than Microsoft Office that can open and edit the files.

Hi all. I hope i'm on a correct thread as this is for IdeaPad S serier netbook. Currently on Windows 7 Starter (netbook) that comes preloaded with MS Office Starter 2010. I do have a genuine MS Office 2003 which previous comes with my PC i bought many years ago. I'm wondering can i install it on top of the current MS Office Starter 2010 OR do i need to uninstall the preloaded MS Office Starter 2010 first? What if i would need the MS Office Starter 2010 again next time? I dare not to do it because i worry i will crash all the MS Office apps... Any idea? Thank you...

Answer:Can install lower version of MS Office ontop of the preloaded MS Office Starter 2010?

Relating to the old version.  Do you have an Office cd or is it a part of a restore cd?  If the former you might be in luck, if the latter, probably not. Secondly, you may or may not be able to do what you want.  I would uninstall the starter first then install the older.  Even this you may be in for a problem.  I did a beta of 2010, then installed an older version and it took MS two days over the phone to get things straightened out and they did that by having me restore windows and that only worked for a few months.  in the process of this mess I found dozens of forums filled with people with the same problem I was having. For some reason the first newer install leaves something in the registry that - even though the older one installs right - makes the system think it needs to reinstall one of them and it will go through a long process of configuring etc. As to whether you can reinstall the 2010, again you would have to have a separate cd to do so unless you wanted to restore your entire drive and lose all yoiur stuff plus the older office. Others, my wife included on her computer, have had no problem going from one version to the other. One other fact.  If youi have an older version and install a 2010 version they can install as separate installs and work together or on ours it gave us the option of uninstalling the older portions of office that came on the new office.  (Wife had office pro older version, in... I haven't installed Office 2016 yet - I use Office 2010 at work and find using Custom Animations in PowerPoint tricky compared to Office 2007.

I'd like to install Office 2016 alongside Office 2007 until I have tried Office 2016 to see if the Custom Animations in PP are easier than the 2010 version before switching completely.

My question is, can I install Office 2016 alongside Office 2007 without conflicts - switching between versions without a problem or will installing Office 2016 screw Office 2007 or worse FUBAR both Office installations or my PC.

Any help gratefully received.

I am new to the site so please forgive any posts I put in the wrong place until I get used to things.

I have just purchased my first laptop and have loaded Microsoft Office 2003 onto it. it is the L300 series.
My problem is that , although I have only loaded Word and Powerpoint sections of the Word suite, it looks like I am out of memory to install the various office assisstants in Word.

When I try to install any other assistants rather than the paper clip, I get a little box that says' you do not have enough memory to install any other assistants'

The laptop details are
Intel celeron t1600
3gb Ram
160GB hard Drive
Wndows Vista Home Premium

Any ideas greatfully received as I am a bit confused as to why I cannot install the other assistants.
I have very little on the laptop at present.

Answer:Satellite L300 - Can't install various office assistans for Office 2003

I googled and found this solution;

1 ) Download the MSAgent technology

2)Download the MSAgent2.exe file from
Run the download, accepting the UAC prompt (the security prompt) and select the option "This program installed correctly"

3) Start the console (command prompt) (type in RUN cmd)

4) type the following commands into the prompt
+copy c:\windows\msagent\agentdpv.dll c:\windows\system32+
+regsvr32 c:\windows\msagent\agentdpv.dll+

Can anyone tell me how to re-install Microsoft Office? I've just had to do a complete re-install of Windows XP Media Center 2005 Edition (as a parallel, repair function was not working on the original version) after a blue screen error nightmare followed by issues with the keyboard and mouse not being recognized. Those issues are now resolved and I was able to keep my data. I see everything in the system has been restored except Microsoft Office 2007. I can see the files but cannot access the actual program. My word and excel files are there but I cannot open them without the program. I do have the Application and Drivers & Utilities CD's (DELL Dimension E520). Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer:[SOLVED] Need to re-install MS Office 2007 in Windows XP - (actually Office 2003)

You need the Office 2007 installation cd . . If it came with the PC, Dell should have included it in the package of cd's with the system

Hi. a while ago I used msconfig to remove some programs that automatically on startup but now I have noticed that close to all of my services and startup programs have stopped loading on startup even though they are all checked in the msconfig window. I have tried rebooting in diagnostic startup but I haven't been able to fix it. I used the admin tools to set some services to run automatically but it doesn't help Steam, Norton, and my other programs to run and many services revert to manual startup. I also cannot run any programs, the only ones that seem to work are norton scan and firefox. Wizards and the system restore tool won't open, I don't know what to do

Answer:Startup programs not running, programs not opening

Try and use Start up CPL to add the files back to start up

To use start-up CPL

Click Start
>Control panel
>>Double click on 'Start up'

When that is open go through the tabs and add the programs you want to load on start up

Answer:computer running to slow, to many nothing programs running

Hello and Welcome to TSF

I see nothing malicous in your HJT log but I see you have P2P software installed on your machine (Morpheus). We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to infections.

There are some processes that you do not need running at startup, you can click Start/Run and type in msconfig. Click the start-up tab, here is where you will find everything that is running at start-up and also remove from startup.

Please create a restore point before attempting to stop any processes from running for safety reasons

I had the beta installed (32 bit). Now I am installing the 64 bit version. When I ran setup it says that i have to uninstall all 32 bit versions of office. I went to the control panel and tried to uninstall, I select "Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010" and click the "uninstall" button but nothing at all happens. So I downloaded "RevoUninstallerpro" to force the uninstall. I did that, uninstalled everything and all of the regestry files. THen i gave the computer the old restart. Went to install it again but same problem. Here is a screen shot of whats going on.

On a different computer, I had a trial version of Office 365 installed. I purchased Office 2016 and uninstalled the trial 365 and installed Office 2016. However, Office 365 "remnants" mingled in with the Office 2016 installation and it was a mess getting it straightened out. Perhaps some profile type files, registry entries and who knows what else remain after the uninstall and found their way into the new installation.

Is there a way to absolutely remove everything associated with Office 2010 before I install Office 365.

Alright well to start this I don't know when it began. Maybe a couple days ago however am not sure exactly how it all occurred. So I am running into a issue with my laptop where it will run certain programs but not others and it is causing some rather large issues with things.

List of Programs that Work (A Very Short List):
Google Chrome
Windows Task Manager
Google Talk
Kaspersky Pure 3.0

Programs that Don't Work:
Windows Media Player
Media Player Classic
Gamestop Now
Apple QuickTime
Apple Itunes
Many others don't work. They crash without ever once showing any sign of launching.

This is a huge issue as I cannot watch any videos on my laptop at all currently and I need to be able to watch videos due to classes.

Steam launches, updates, then crashes when it goes to load the main program. QuickTime and WMP and MPC all show no sign of loading at all and just fail to launch.

I have attached a screen grab of my processes running. Do need some help as this is a HUGE annoyance. I cannot find my re-install disk that came with the laptop so some help would be AWESOME! I might have a restore point from a long time back.

If additional information is needed please say so.

I would also like to note that I did a full system scan. Didn't find anything in the files, system structure, registry or anything else computer was clean.

I am not computer illiterate and have no issues messing with my system registry if needed to remove something that is running.

Answer:Programs Crash Upon Running (Not all Programs) Need Help.

One thing for sure, in that picture you have too many instances of Google Chrome running, may be impacting resources available. If Chrome seemed to be actually closed when you did the screenshot it could mean Chrome isn't removing itself from RAM when it is closed.

Can I upgrade Office 2000 to Office XP, while still running Windows 2000?

I could use some of the features of Office XP, and would really like to retain my Windows 2000 environment. Do you think I could make this upgrade in Office?

Answer:Can I upgrade Office 2000 to Office XP, while still running Windows 2000?

Office XP can run on Windows 2000. Even though the operating systems and office suites have the same naming convention, that doesn't mean that they have to match up (Windows 2000-Office 2000, Windows XP-Office XP).

I had a run-in with MS Office 2007 that ended up (my bad I'm sure) necessitating a repair install of Windows 7 (64 bit) after a complete uninstall of Office. The Windows repair went well with the exception of a couple of drivers; easily adjusted.

Then I did a clean install of Office 2007. It sort of went well. Except that every time I try to do something with it (like accessing Visual Basic to put my macros back in), it's telling me - incessantly - that files don't have sufficient permission blah, blah. Well, I'm setting the permissions but it's over and over and feels like every file in "Program Files (x86)/Common Files/Microsoft Shared/..." needs permission attention.

Is there ANY way to avoid doing this over and over and over and...? And could I have avoided this by setting something different in one of the installs?

Thanks as always for the help.

Answer:Windows 7 will download programs but not install programs

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

How many anti-virus applications are you using?

May I suggest you delete the lot and use Microsoft Security Essentails instead?

You can download it here and it's free: Microsoft Security Essentials | Protect against viruses, spyware, and other malware

Having more than one A/V application running can impact on how your computer performs and it is not good practice to run more than one on your computer.

Maybe I'm not doing something I was supposed to but when I'm in 10 and try to run MS Office 2010, I get an error message that states: "The operating system is not presently configured to run this application"

When I try to run programs from MS Office 2013 a window appears asking me if I want to let this application make changes to my computer. Clicking yes or no does nothing. No error messages or windows appear after that.

Is there something I was supposed to run when I installed Windows 10? Maybe a migration tool or something to that effect?

It might be easier if I explain my issue in bullet points as I am really not a techincal person and have gone round in many circles so far. I am trying to set up my own website and hosting and so far so good..until today!

5. tried to install outlook 2007 and got the following msg half way through installation:

6. clicked ignore and carried on - it seemed to work!

I have a problem with my laptop when trying to re-install Office 2013 preview edition - basically the initial install failed for some reason and can I can neither remove or install this software leaving me in some sort of Microsoft limbo.

Someone I know suggested logging onto the "my account" section of the Microsoft site and actually deactivating the install however that has not solved the problem?

CCleaner has also been run to try and remove any redundant registry entries however again that has not solved my problem.

My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64 (Official)

Couple of things you can try. Revo Uninstaller Pro has a free 30 day trial. The forced uninstall option should remove the Office 2013 including left over registry entries.

Or you could try the Microsoft Fix It. If that doesn't work there are also instructions for manual removal.

I was lucky enough to be able to update to Win 7 Pro for free through a MS program for physics and engineering students. I previously had MS Office installed on my computer under Vista, but when I upgraded, it wiped all my programs away and I'm starting over installing everything. Anyway, I don't have written down anywhere what my product key was when I installed Office the first time (in vista). However, when 7 did the installation, it took all my program files and put them in a "windows.old" folder under Computer. Is there any way that I can transfer the installation (or at least the product key) from somewhere in the windows.old file to the new 7 OS?

Thanks so much for any help you can give me! And the sooner the better, because I really need to use Office ASAP. Thanks again!

An illegal function has nothing to do with the legality of the software - it merely means that the software tried to run in some way that was incompatible with either the hardware on which it is running or it is interfering with some other program that is running. These can be memory errors, or attempts to use areas that are reserved for, say, the operating system.
My suggestion would be to reboot and then reload Office 2000.

Hi all - I'm cringing already at the responses I suspect I'm going to get to this question.

I've had to reformat my hard-drive (again). I backed up everything to an external hard-drive and specifically selected everything in the Microsoft Office folders.

Of course, now, the software won't load. The error I get is "the operating system is not presently configured to run this application."

Why do I care? Because I lost my stinking Office 2007 cd (and case ... with the key ...).

My reformatted hard drive has a "Windows Old" file. Any solution contained in there?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Office Programs Migrate-able?

how did you back up the software - did you do an image copy or ghost copy of the harddrive - or just copy some files

if just copied some files - then you are going to need to find the CD and key

as you formatted and re-installed across the harddrive - I'm not sure theres much you can do

Hi all - I'm cringing already at the responses I suspect I'm going to get to this question.Click to expand...

I think you know the answer - unless you have proof of ownership of office 2007 to discuss with MS - I think you will have to buy it again

Sound is awesome on the video and audio ...however system sounds are weak and all sounds in Microsoft Office will not play at all.

Deleted the trial version pre-installed and loaded my own copy of Office 2007 (which works fine on other computer). All programs are checked for "feedback with sound". Still no sound in Office.

Called Toshiba and they say it is a Microsoft issue and they cannot help me. Tried to contact Microsoft and they say because it is pre-installed I can only get help from Toshiba.

Since no sound will work in any version of Office...2007 or 2010 beta....but works everywhere else I have to assume the issue is with Windows 7. Problem is how do I re-install it when it was pre-loaded and I have no discs. Or is there some minute setting I can change in Windows to make it work right? It is either fix it or send the computer back.

Hopefully someone can help. I have been searching the net for three days and have yet to see a similar problem.

Answer:No sound in Office programs

Have you tried installing Office Sounds?

I have it installed and it seems to work with 7 and Office 2010, although I had to manually edit the location of .wav files that were created by the above installation for events that didn't have them mapped.

Also, check your current Sounds settings in Personalization - does your sound scheme have sound events for Office - now?

I use Excel all the time but it doesn't show up in the Most Used area. When apps are in that section they get the little pop out window so I can go directly to a specific XLS file without having to open Excel first and then go open it.

Is there any way to force Excel to go into that list? It was in there on my previous computer but I just can't get it in there on my current one.

I had to upgrade my Office 2000 applications to Office XP, unfortunately as it turned out...

When I try to run Outlook now it opens, a flash screen appears that it is migrating, and then it shuts down... I did the registry fix on Microsoft's Knowledgebase, to no avail...

I need to use Outlook urgently, so I need help as in yesterday!

Please help!!

Answer:Office XP programs shut down

Look for all your .pst files and save them somewhere. Uninstall outlook and reinstall. It looks as though you upgraded (ouch, I rarely get an upgrade to work correctly) If that is the case install the 2000 version first download all of it's patches and then upgrade to Office XP. Once reinstalled import your .pst files.

I am trying to use EndNote to automatically insert references into Word documents. I have gone through the entire process of activating the add-in and it now appears under the "Active Application Add-Ins" list that I can access through windows button-----> Word Options--------> Add-Ins. However, no Add-Ins button appears next to the "Home", "Insert", "Page Layout" etc. buttons on the ribbon. I have been able to add the "Developer" button on the ribbon, but cannot access the "Add-In" button. This problem is not unique to Word, the button is lacking from Powerpoint and Excel as well. Can someone please show me how to make this button appear? Do I have to uninstall then reinstall Office 2007 altogether?

Answer:add-ins tab does not appear in Office 2007 programs

Hi there, welcome to the board!

Usually this tab will appear when you have an add-in loaded, either through the addin_install event, or through the file_open event (file being whatever program you're working in) with a recognized add-in extension. I am unfamiliar with the file you've described. Can you tell us how you're using it? What version was this made for? Is there even a UI with it? Is this a dll for all Office applications?

I recently bought an Acer Aspire 5739G and have installed Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007. The problem is that when the computer is started up, the first program used will always freeze and become non-responsive. A message will then be displayed saying 'Found new Hardware', which once maximised tells me to download an updated RAS Async Adaptor. I have tried and paid to correct this problem, but nothing seems to be working. After the message has been displayed, the program stays locked and I have either exited the program, which results in the program freezing for a further 10 minutes and then closing themselves or using the task manager. The program can be minimised and I am able to continue with other tasks whilst this is in progress unhindered and the programs work fine after this initial problem, every time the computer is started up. This is the same case for Excel, Word, Publisher, Access, PP etc. all acting in the same manner.

Any suggestions?

The MS Office programs on my PC are now very slow to start, to save, and especially to close. I work with several windows open for different office programs with several spreadsheets on the go, each new spreadsheet now takes an age to initiate or close (after saving). This I think happened suddenly a couple of months back and is getting worse.I have reloaded MS Office 97 pro, reloaded MS Win98se, regular defrags, scandisc, emptyied temp files etc. Have McAfee antivirus. PC is AMD (I think 800mhz), 256mb RAM, system resourses are regularly down to 45 or 50%, with only 3gb used on 20gb HD. I use it daily for work purposes. Help

Answer:programs (MS Office) are now very slow

Only a thought.Have you tried it in safe mode and see if the same thing happens. If not, go to start run type in msconfig and remove everything but systray from the startup. Reboot and see if that helps. If that be the case, add one item from startup at a time to find a poss, program culprit if there is one.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 which i bought early 2008. I got fed up with it running slow recently so i did a clean install of Vista Home Premium.

I have just tried to re-install MS Office Home and Student 2007 which came with my laptop when i bought it. I enter the 25 character product key (correctly) from the sticker on the back of the cd wallet but it gives me a validation error and suggests i may have incorrectly entered the product key.

I have performed a clean Vista install before a few years ago and didn't have an issue re-installing Office last time with this very disk

What could cause this?

Answer:Install Office after clean install of Vista

The most common problem is mistake with zero and oh, make sure you are doing it correctly.

I think I am infected with some sort of virus.
Everything on the computer seemed to be working fine. But then after I tried to open Word last night all of the MS Office programs attempted to open on my desktop....even the Games program?
Then I shutdown manually in an attempt to restart.  I could not get the computer to turn on, despite being plugged into a wall outlet.. It woudl power up, but them immediately shut down. After serveral attempts, it's up and running in Safe Mode.
The MS Office progaram have to attempted to open again. But, in safe mode. I now keep getting message alerts from McAfee that I don't have my real time scanning on.  I turn it on, and it automatically turns off.

OK, I hope I'm asking this question in the right place. I'm new to Windows and I'm having a hell of a time trying to find where my applications are stored. Mac OX stores apps in "Applications" (Yes, I'm a Mac girl, and my G4 finally died after 10 years of faithful maintenence-free service. I bought a PC to tide me over while I save for the Mac of my dreams). After downloading Microsoft Office, the app is on my desktop. I'd like to file it alongside my other applications, but I'm stopped when I try to move it to where other Office programs are stored. Any help will be appreciated. Thanx. : )

Answer:Move to where other Office programs are stored?

Hi and I will try and help.
I think you are saying that you downloaded MSOffice from some where and saved it to your desktop.
Is this correct?

Have you opened it and installed in yet?
If yes great. If no why not?
If you need to install it just left mouse click it twice and it should open and start the install process.

If you did install it and want to save the application for safe keeping in case you need to reinstall in the future you need to right mouse click on it and select copy from the menu.

After that you need to open Explorer and decide where you want it stored for safe keeping.
Possible directory called Backup Program.
Where ever it is all you need to do is select the location and right mouse click again in the directory and select paste.

I know it was easier on the Apple but welcome to the PC reality world.

I have a toshiba sattelite p105-s6177 laptop, it's running on Vista home premium 32 bit.
Last week it suddenly started acting weird, the entire computer slowed down and every single click took a few minutes to register, no word or excel documents could be opened. ( example of error message when trying to open word: "Error message: the procedure entry point stretchB could not be located in the dynamic link library GDI32.dll." I googled it and got no hits).
I also noticed that Avast stopped working.
Tried to run scan disk, stopped in the middle and got an error, after which i got a black screen with only the mouse visible.
Tried to reboot many times but kept getting the black screen as before.
I tried hitting F8 on reboot and doing a system restore but got an error too (cyclic redundancy error).
Last night i tried running chkdsk /r c: while booting and after it finished running (a few hours) i still got the black screen but after a few minutes i finally got to the login screen and was able to log on.
Now the computer doesn't seem to be too slow, but i still cannot access Microsoft office applications or open any word/excel documents. I had to remove and reinstall Avast (which the computer didn't allow me to do before) i ran a scan and it didn't find any viruses.
Now i'm wondering what attacked my computer last week and how can I fix it so I can be confident that my computer is safe and I can open MsWord.
Thanks in advance.

I seem to have a weird problem with Word and Excel (2003). if I click on either shortcut, the program opens reasonably quickly, and then it also opens any file quickly (whether it is from the recent files list or by finding it through "File Open".

However, if I doubleclick the Word or Excel file directly (say in Explorer), it takes forever to open Word/Excel,and then loading the file takes quite long too. Same problem with rtf files created with Wordpad. Also, same slow reaction if I rightmouse the file and either "Open" or "Open With".

This is a problem that only started overthe last couple of days, and I don't think I've installed anything new.

I am totally confused.

Any suggestions will be gratefully accepted.

Answer:Weirdly slow office programs

bearspa... i am glad i saw your posting because i was about to start the same one.

i felt the dramatic reduction in speed when i open, save, copy, find, sort, cut or paste in excel. i tried saving the file from xlsx (2007) to binary format (i thought it is supposed to help with huge excel files) but that did not help either.

hopefully, someone will be able to help us.

I have been opening up word and excel documents and emailing direct from them for a long time on this computer. All of a sudden yesterday when I try, I am directed to sign in to my Yahoo email account.

I don't want to send from my Yahoo account, but from one of my accounts I send and receive via Outlook Express. I changed some privacy setting in Yahoo yesterday and it didn't appear to have anything to do with this, but now I have to go in and open up OE, then write the message and browse to attach the file.

I have tried looking at places to make OE my default mail service, changed it in OE, but it still isn't working. I send documents like this all day for work and it is time consuming to do it the other way.

Any ideas on what to do?

We purchased a new Dell with Windows 7 then I installed Microsoft Office Professional 2007. All of the office features randomly freeze, usually when I go to print. When we reboot everything works again for a while. I've lost information when this happens. Is it a OS problem an Office problem or I read something about it being Macros... I read a previous out dated post about HP phipherials causing problems. What is the cause?

I recently migrated all applications and files from my old macbook pro to my new macbook air. The 2008 MS Office for Mac programs were working fine on my old computer but now I face this problem:

1. When I try to open an Office program the Microsoft Office Setup Assistant opens asking if I want to take part in the Customer Experience Improvement Program and then suggesting I "get started" by learning more and/or registering.

2. I click finish and the Microsoft Auto Update Opens. It checks for updates. The first time I did this it said there was a service pack released in December 2011 that I needed so I downloaded that. Oddly this doesn't show up in my downloads folder.

3. Now it finds no updates. I click OK and then close Microsoft Auto Upate. Word, Excel, etc does not open.

4. I click to try opening Word, Excel, or another program and the cycle starts again.
Thank you for any help,

I know I need to find time to come here and just take a look at the difficulites you all are having, but I just CANNOT get impressed over VISTA. It's beyond disappointing to me.

I find I cannot even download free trials of Office Suite, or Publisher, or CuteFTP, or anything else!

In Office, when I'm in the free download area, I can complete ALL the other catagories, but the MINUTE I put in the language, the page rolls over, and wipes everything out -instead of sending me onto the download page! So do the other download areas.

Since VISTA won't work with my old Cute, or Office or Publisher, and I cannot even download these from online to see if they're compatible, what am I supposed to do with this machine?

I work web designs, and my sister and I do an ENORMOUS amount of Ministry writing. This program is absolutely worthless to us! I will NOT buy the products only to find they don't work, unless I can trial them to see what bugs there are in all of them. And I don't have two weeks to sit down and get into the "guts" of this machine and methodically work it all out.

Can ANYONE give me some simple pointers as to how to retrieve download pages??? I got the folder fix from this place, only to have my machine delete it from my system (not even on my desktop or in my download file), so I had to come back here to retrieve it again!

I don't think I have EVER dis-liked a system so much in my life -but am desperate to at least try some of these products ... Read more

Being the admin/designer of this site and a few others I also do alot of web design, and so far every program I used to use in XP has worked without any problem.

I'm having quite a serious issue with regards to the Office 2007 Ultimate running on Vista 64bit OS.

After a period of time of my computer running, the office programs (Excel, Word, Groove and Outlook) begin to encounter errors. They crash, and windows tells me that the program has experienced a problem and will be restarted. As always there's no response from the report this problem to Microsoft.

I've tried repairing the office installation, to no success. I've checked my Hard-drive to ensure that there's no issues with that (not that there should be as everything else runs smoothly). I've tried running office programs in safe mode.

I'm trying to hold off formatting and reinstalling everything (time consuming and have a rebuild in the pipeline to upgrade to Windows 7 in a couple of weeks) so I'm trying to fix the issue another way.

The following is what the error logs have for the crashes:
ID: 1, Application Name: Microsoft Office Excel, Application Version: 12.0.6514.5000, Microsoft Office Version: 12.0.6425.1000. This session lasted 6 seconds with 0 seconds of active time. This session ended with a crash.Click to expand...

Other program crashes have similar error messages. The details tab doesn't yield any other information.

I've been trying to ascertain what's going on. Has anyone got any thoughts or ideas as to what may be causing this and how to fix it?

I have MS Office 2007 Home & Student, all the included programs look like something out of the 80's. The Windows logo looks 16 bit & black & white. Internet Explorer, will not show page colours either, thus we are unable to see buttons & links. I'm at a loss and don't know what to do.
