Previously working shared folder not showing files

Question: Previously working shared folder not showing files

Additional Note:
Performing a net user * /DELETE has no effect on the share that is not working properly. Also when performing a new use the share does not appear in the list.

I keep having a re-occurring issue.

I start by creating a shared folder on a Windows 2000 Server. From my Windows XP Pro laptop I'm able to access the files in the shared folder. At some point either from logging off the network or network changes that occur over night, I lose share. By losing the share I mean that I can access the folder that is shared but it does not show any files in the folder even though there are files. If I turn off the server, I get the same empty folder results. I've tried registering and flushing the DNS several times and reassigning my IP address. I'm at a loss as to why the share will not show any files. If I create a new share on the same server it will work fine until I leave for the day and return the next day. I would like to understand more about how shares are created and handled in Windows and then I might be able to figure out why this problem is occurring.

Preferred Solution: Previously working shared folder not showing files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Everyone,

I am running a single Domain Controller on a Windows Server 2008 R2 box.

Within my Domain there are about 40 clients; a mixture of Windows computers ranging in version from XP to W7.

On many computers I have enabled shares on various folders (for backing up email, sharing data directly between computers, etc).

On my personal workstation I have a number of folders shared with the rest of the Domain.

Recently colleagues of mine have not been able to access any of the shared folders on my workstation. When they attempt to do so through "Network" (from Windows 7) they see the following message -

Whilst colleagues cannot see my shared folders they are setup exactly as they were when they were accessible (and I have not made any changes in recent memory). Furthermore I am able to access shared folders on other computers from my workstation.

I have performed a fair amount of Googling before posting to this forum, and many of my search results indicated that I should use the Netdom.exe command to reset the "machine account password" for the Domain. However this seems like using a sledge hammer to put a tack in a wall, and I really don't want to mess with the Server if I can avoid it.

Further to the above I have also read a great deal about file encryption and setting the encryption in Windows 7 lower, but this only appears to be relevant when trying to connect from XP to W7 (which doesn't really concern me at this stage). ... Read more

Answer:Cannot access Shared Folder (that was previously accessible)

It may be worth checking that the time/date settings are all in sync on the server and the clients. Another common problem is people may inadvertently use their ISP or router as an alternate DNS server.

Your PC's and servers should only point to your internal DNS servers. If not you will often have name resolution and connection issues.

I've also read that Symantec Endpoint security can cause problems such as is being described.

Answer:Cannot access Shared Folder (that was previously accessible)

Hi Everyone,

I have managed to solve this issue. Previously I have encountered similar issues between a Windows Domain Controller and a client computer; however in previous cases the client computer simply wasn't able to logon to the Domain (even when using the Admin, or Administrator account). In those previous instances I would receive a "The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed." message at the logon screen (as pictured below) -

In the instance related to this post there appears to have been some kind of "partial mistrust" between my workstation and the Domain Controller (Windows 2008 R2 Server).

Before looking directly at the Domain as the primary cause of this issue I performed the following on my workstation.

1). Removed an "Alternate DNS" entry from the network adaptor
2). Flushed the DNS (using ipconfig /flushdns)
3). Rebooted

After the above steps there was no improvement, so I performed the following additional steps.

1). Unjoined the Domain from my workstation
2). Rebooted my workstation (and logged onto a local account)
3). Deleted my workstations entry from Active Directory User & Computers on the Server
4). Rebooted the Server
5). Rejoined the Domain from my workstation
6). Rebooted my workstation
7). Logged back onto my workstation with my Domain account

The above steps fixed the issue, and I am now able to view shared folders that are on my workstation from Windows 7 & Win... Read more

[Windows 7 Prof 64-bit SP-1]

A folder in \Programme Files(x86), which was shared last week no longer allows access from my network (XP Home/Prof machines).

The folder is (was) a shared one, has the read only attribute removed, and has a share-name. I don't have the [Share With] option on right-click, only [Advanced Sharing]. It's shared with Everyone for read-write access.

Try as I may I cannot get this folder to revert to its previous shared status and unless a solution is found I shall have to move it out to a new folder unde c:\ outside system control.

My UAC is one notch down from the top.

Hello everyone,

I'm using a laptop (with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit installed) as a DVR and media streamer to all other devices in the house.
My TV recordings are recorded into a temporary folder and when the recording is finished the program moves the files into the My Videos folder.

The My Videos folder is shared so we can watch the recordings from the Xbox downstairs or other Windows 7 devices in the house.
This worked pretty well in the past but for some reason new recordings (or downloads) aren't shared by default anymore. All files have a small lock icon (shared with nobody) and I have to manually share new files within an already shared folder.

This is pretty annoying and takes away the convenience.

I would appreciate any tip to fix this problem to have all files in the shared folder(s) shared by default.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:New files aren't shared in shared folder

It's easy once you know how, just right click the C:/Video's folder and choose properties, Security tab then Advanced button, then just put a check mark where it says "Replace all Child Object Permission Entries with Inheritable Permissions Entries from this Object, then hit Apply, OK....this will fix the problem you described.

I pinned the Files folder in my account to the Windows 10 Start menu, and also saved this folder as a favorite in Edge, which is my default browser. But after closing Edge, when I then click the tile in the start menu, or after opening Edge, if I click the OneDrive link in the favorites bar, OneDrive opens my Shared folder rather than the desired Files folder. To see the Files folder, I can click "OneDrive" in the menu bar. Moreover, after the Files folder has been opened, if I then add a tab and click on OneDrive in the favorites bar, OneDrive correctly opens the Files folder, and will continue to operate this way (the correct way) as long as I don't close the browser. When I saved my OneDrive Files folder as a favorite in Firefox, I experienced the same problem. So the problem does not appear to be related to Edge.
How can I make always open in the Files Folder the first time?

After several days and nights of searching and coming up empty, here is my dilemma. I have been sharing Video files with several devices in my home(XBox360, PS3, Tablets etc.), and it works great. However I have noticed that all of the deleted files are still showing on the shared device. For example the tv show Alphas, I downloaded a couple of episodes to check it out, watched the first one and was not impressed and deleted both files off of the hard drive. But when I connect any device to watch something its still there. How do I get rid of those types of "ghost files" completely? Sorry in advance if I put this in the wrong area.

Answer:Deleted Files Still Showing Up On Shared Devices

Try removing the files from C>Users>UserName>MyVideo's, rather than trying to delete them from the video Library.

I have all 4 PC's in the office using Windows 7 Pro. I have one computer that is designated to house my share folder for scanning documents and attaching them to our management system.  We are finding that multiple problems occur - not at once and at
different times .  Sometimes, the document within the shared folder called "IMAGEBATCH" will not delete.  Sometimes that document deletes, and then re-appears within the IMAGEBATCH folder.  Sometimes the document will not
scan through the network to the IMAGEBATCH folder.  Sometimes we get an error saying we "don't have permission to delete this file".  These circumstances occur on all computers, including the computer that houses the original file IMAGEBATCH.
Sometimes in the day, each computer that is supposedly looking at the same IMAGEBATCH folder see different files.
Restarting the computer clears the problems, but then start right back up at irregular intervals, sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the middle of the day.
I did find a duplicate file named IMAGEBATCH on the "C" drive of that PC, so I deleted that, but the symptoms are still there.  This is the only shared folder in our entire network.  What can I be missing?  I have checked to make
sure it is a share folder, all the permissions are in place, and that we all can see the folder through the network.  What am I missing?  I am the owner and administrato... Read more

I wanted them offline so I chose make available offline. After some days I've removed 'Make available offline'.
Now, the problem is when I open a file in shared folder for modification it's taking a local copy the changes are not reflecting in server.
What I dont understand is when I removed offline, how am getting a local copy instead of the files in server.

Yes, your friend can add files to your shared folder, provided you have the proper permission settings for the folder set up. On your PC, go to Onedrive and navigate to the folder you have shared, and click on "share", then "invite people", then add the people you want to allow, then change "recipients can only view" to "recipients can edit". Done!

On my home network with 4 PCs I can access all shared files with no problems except from one PC. This PC is running XP SP3 and any files in the folder when it is shared are available and can be opened no problem but any new files moved to or created in this folder are can't be accessed by any of the other computers, as in "Windows media player cannot access this file. The file might be in use, you might not have access" and so on.
Never met this before on my others systems new files and old files are all available as long as they are in a shared folder.

I am running windows XP and using the shared Dcoument folder to share JPEG files on two other computers. When I go to the other computers to open the Files (jpeg) the folders are showing up along with the thumbnail of the picture - not the actual picture just a Icon. I tried viewing the folder in different views but i get nothing just the Icon.
Is it a setting on the main computer that needs to be checked in order to see the JPEG files

I have a PC with Windows 8.1 and a Mac with Mavericks. I have a folder on the Mac that is shared with the PC. When I'm on the PC and I try to open a file that is shared by the Mac, such as an ISO file (a disk image), then I get a message saying that I cannot open the file, or the file is in use (it depends on the app/filetype). I have the same problem when I open a video file. Strangely, text files and PDF files are just fine. And if I copy any of the problematic files to the local Windows disk, then I can open them just fine.

The specific error messages are:

- AVI files opened in VLC: "Your input can't be opened. VLC is unable to open the MRL."
- ISO files opened by Windows Explorer: "Sorry, there was a problem mounting the file."

This only started happening after I upgraded to Windows 8.1 on the PC and Mavericks on the Mac. Mavericks upgraded its SMB version from SMB1 to SMB2, so perhaps that is related?
Does anyone know what the problem might be, and how I could fix it?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:W8.1: Can't open files on SMB folder shared by a Mac

Welcome to Eight Forums,

The upgrade seems to be an issue in your case. I'd suggest for you to download the latest driver from the manufacturer's site for your network adapter, see if that helps. I don't think that there's a way to revert your Maverick's SMB version.

Please post an update or your progress.

I have two computers, a desktop running Windows 7 Professional and a netbook running Windows 7 starter edition. I have shared some folders on the netbook and can access them from the desktop computer. However, I am unable to share folders on the desktop. From the netbook, I can see the desktop on my network and also the shared folders, but when I try to open them I am told I have insufficient authorization to so so. I have checked the authorizations on the desktop side and can see that "Everyone" has permission to open these folders for reading, and that the authorization extends also to subfolders and files.

I've been trying all day to resolve this problem and would appreciate any help.

When I set up these permissions, why doesn't Windows warn me that there's something else that will impede what I'm trying to do?

Answer:Insufficient authorization to see files in shared folder

You might try going into the Security tab of the Desktop's main drive or folder you want to share then add "Everyone" there as well. Security tab>Edit button>Add button>type Everyone for object name, apply, ok and so forth.

Hello all, thanks for your help.

Goal :
Sharing a Vista 64 Home Premium Folder with an XP Laptop.

Problem :
XP can view folders, but not files, in the Vista Shared Folder. Files that were in the folder when sharing was setup in Vista are accessible, but new files are not displayed. New Folders do display, however.

System Setup :
MSHOME network, Vista private network sharing of a single directory. Vista connected by cable, XP laptop by Wireless.

Already Done :
- Triple-Checked Permissions (guest, everyone, etc.)
- Normal Vista Sharing configuration in place
- Checked through specific settings for 'guest' and 'everyone' access of the folder, including 'read files..'
- Checked the net in luck

The folder I'm sharing is a P2P download folder. Sharing doesn't work properly when the program is on or off, so it doesn't seem to affect anything.

Other things I've done :
- Turned 'indexing' on
- Made sure 'read only' was not enabled under folder settings.

Answer:Vista Shared Folder Files not Updating

Update :

The P2P stuff isn't a factor - created a new directory and shared - same problem.

I'm wondering if it may have something to do with XP. (service pack 3)

Hi all,

This is a problem that's been bothering me for days. I use an older computer (Windows XP Professional, SP2) that's relatively slow, but has a decent amount of disk space to store some of my files. While I store files on there, I prefer to access the files using my newer computer (Windows XP Home, SP2) since it's faster to extract/unzip files.

I can access all the folders & subfolders in the Shareddocs directory of my old computer perfectly, *except* ZIP/RAR files. Once I unzip the archive, my new computer can access all the files. But if I try to use my new computer to unzip the archives, it's telling me that it cannot find the file & that I don't have permissions for it.

So far, I've tried unchecking the "Simple File Sharing" box, and checking the permissions, and I have given everyone Full Control on my old computer. But I am still unable to extract/view the archives.

Any idea what might be wrong? I can just unzip everything on the old computer, but it's so horrendously slow I'd like some sort of solution to this.

Thanks in advance!

BY THE WAY, is there a way to share the entire C drive or we are strict to the public folders? Its wierd that I gave full access permissions to the C drive, yet an error occurs while trying to access from XP. Only the public folders can be accessed.

You still need to allow premission to access the shared files on the Win7 machine. Just set up permissions on the Win7 machine by going to "Network and sharing center" and then to the left choose "Change Advance sharing settings". The select the settings in the pictures below.

You should also have access to the entire C drive once you do that.

I've been using file and printer sharing for quite a while on various home networks, but this problem has me completely stumped.

I have one folder on each of 2 Windows XP Pro machines shared. I can access some of the files in this shared folder but not others. The problem is not specific to size (some are larger, others are small) or type (some are EXE's, others are .TXT's). I simply get the "Access denied" error when trying to open, run, or copy some of the files.

I've tried deleting the folder and re-creating it, and that doesn't work. I've disabled Windows firewall on both systems. That didn't work either.

PC B can see/open files from share on PC A, but any attempts to move or copy result in error message "your current security settings do not allow this action". Both PCs have IE6, File & Print Sharing enabled and turning off Windows Firewall doesn't change anything. What else can I try? Thanks.

Answer:Moving/copying files from shared folder causes error

Make sure you have the permissions set on both the Security tab as well as the Sharing tab.

On the shared folder security permissions, make sure that you go to the Advanced settings and check the box that tells it to replace the permissions on child objects as well.

Hi Guys,

I am migrating my user's home folders from one storage server to another storage server. We have offline files sync enabled and users use to work at work in offline mode and the files/folders sync when they connect to the company's network.
I have done some testing before migrating and found an issue that need assistance from your guys.

I pick a test user say "Testuser01" and logout him out from the system. I have copied all home drive stuff from Sharedserever-1 (Old) to Sharedserever-2 (New) for test user and make the required changes in AD profile and GPO for drive mapping. As
the Testuser01's documents pointing to H-drive (My Documents) are available offline on laptop in Documents folder. Now I have worked offline as "tesetuser01" and created some test files but when I logged in and connected
with my company's network H-drive is it correctly pointing to new Sharedserever (i.e. Sharedserever-2) and Documents path also redirected to the new server location. However the files created in offline mode were disappeared instead of sync with
the new Sharedserever.
I could not figure out why and I don't know if it something with CSC - Client-Side Caching folder ?
Any help would be appreciated.

I can access the folder from other computers on the LAN, using \\computer\downloads. My problem is, sometimes the browsing computer (an XP Pro SP3 machine) will get an outdated list of the directory.

For instance, I have added many files in the past couple of weeks. Yet, for some reason, even today one of the computers would show the most recent file as being from late January. I've tried refreshing and shift-refreshing. Doesn't help.

What's weird is that this behavior seems to vary from client computer to client computer. One of my XP Pro SP3 machines will have the most-recent list of files, and the other one will still be a little bit behind, not showing the newest files.

I can't figure this out! I would think that the problem must lie on the side of the client, yet I have never had this problem previously in all my years of XP-to-XP file sharing.

Is there some sort of network cache present in XP that can be cleared? Or any other ideas on how to solve this?

Answer:Browsing shared folder over LAN sometimes shows outdated list of files; sometimes OK

It's not unnatural for what shows in My Network Places (XP) or Network (Vista) to be out of date, but usually not that out of date. In My Network Places click 'view workgroup computers' and you should force an update.

On any (properly working) network one computer becomes the Master Browser. It determines what's on the network and periodically updates the other computers.

Hello My roomate has created a folder on his desktop called "music1", and the permissions are set for full access/shared etc on his computer. I can access many other shared folders on his computer with my pc no problem. I can even listen to other music files on his computer in other shared folders. For some reason or other I cannot play his music files or copy his music files when trying to access the music1 folder on his desktop. If i'm thinking correctly the root folder must be shared to allow access to subfolders, but in this case...the shared folder (music1) is the root folder that was created on his desktop. any ideas?

update: also I have discovered that if I remove the read only permission>hit apply>ok then when I reopen it the "read only box is checked again"

i deselect it again, and again, and again..only for it to reappear again.

I have shared one folder and in security I added "everyone" and given full permission (full control, write, etc.)

But still I cannot access some pdf files in the folder from another computer. I can open the folder but when I try to open the pdf file I'm getting some permission error. Then I went to the first computer I selected all pdf files >> right click >> properties >> I changed security and added everyone there. Then I could open the pdf files from another computer.

Now the problem is every time when I add some files in the shared folder. I have to select all the files inside and add permission even though the folder itself is given full permission. I wonder why is it so?

Answer:shared folder with full permission cannot access files inside

If the same users access this folder. Add each person individually with Full Control rather then the Everyone Group to the permissions of the folder. Or You can add the users to the Power Users Group. Then allow the Power Users Group to have Full control.

I'm encountering a problem on different computers.
Internet Explorer 11 and Edge are not able to open files from a shared folder located on the same computer.
For example, let's say I typed this "\\\folder_1\DOC_FILE.doc" on the address bar.
The browser then shows : "This page can't be displayed".
When I display more information, the error "INET_E_RESOURCE_NOT_FOUND" appears.
I have already tried to uncheck "Enable TCP Fast open" and it is still not working.
It seems like this problem cannot be reproduced on all IE11/EDGE browsers, and can be encountered on both Windows 7 and Windows 10.
Any ideas ?
Best regards

My girlfriend called and complained to me that all her files are gone on her computer. She explained that the black cmd screen came up saying that files were being deleted. I assumed she had a virus and there wasn't a whole lot that could be done to get the files back. However, when I randomly looked in the Windows folder, I noticed that all the files were missing from there as well. This is strange to me as Windows was in fact running without fine (minus the missing files). All the programs work fine, but all the folders show up as empty. I went into folder options and changed the option to show hidden files and still I got nothing. I also used the xp cd to run chkdsk /r and it came up with a BSOD Stop error after trying to boot into windows. I had to run fixmbr to get Windows up again. Maybe the problems are related. Do you have any ideas on what this might be?

Answer:Files (including windows folder files) not showing up.

Update: The files in the Windows directory seem to have come back. Not sure how that happened, so now I'm trying out some file recovery software to see if I can find anything.

I wasn't sure whether to put this in the XP subforum or the Vista/7 one, as it relates to both. Hope I made the right choice. :-)

My problem is this: I have a Windows 7 Ultimate desktop (recently upgraded from Vista Home Premium) with a C:\downloads\ folder that is shared over the network as "downloads."

On a second computer, an XP computer, one I set up the correct sharing permissions (that is, to give access to Computer 2's username), I can then browse to \\desktop\downloads\.

The problem is this: The file list show in \\desktop\downloads\ is outdated, and many files and folders are missing. There is nothing special about these files or folders. They're not hidden or anything.

For instance, opening up C:\downloads\ on my desktop shows a folder with 3,118 items -- files and folders.

Accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from another computer shows 111 items.

Interestingly, accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from the desktop shows the correct amount: 3,118 items.

I have tried refreshing the file list, obviously, from the second computer. I have also tried accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from a third computer (also XP) on the same network, with similar problems... leading me to believe the problem is on the Windows 7 computer.

The W7 desktop has no problem accessing other shares.

I should also add that all three of these computers are on the same workgroup and can ping each other.

Also, as a test, I created a brand-new folder, C:\downloads2\,... Read more

I've got an annoying problem which is similar to [but not sure if its the same as] some other complaints about the navigation pane reported here (like this & this).

It seems to happen only when the navigation pane is open on file commands like "open..." and "save as...".

When the dialog opens and I left click a folder opening arrow on the left hand pane, the folder expands but then after half a second or so it jumps back to whatever folder was previously expanded. Both parts of the tree remain expanded but I have to scroll to get to the one I just expanded, which is very annoying.

Has anyone else come across this (sorry - tried a search but couldn't find it)?

Is there a way to change it?

Answer:Folder navigation jumps to previously expanded folder

When I try to rename a folder on the D: partition that used to be a Windows XP recovery partition that has some Pokemon commissions in it, I get this message.
"This folder is shared with other people
If you rename this folder, it will no longer be shared."
But the folder is not shared nor has it ever been.
What is going on? Why does Windows 7 think that it is shared?

Answer:“This folder is shared with other people” when renaming not shared folder

Hello there,
This happens because of the way the Access Control List is queried by Windows Explorer to determine if the folder is shared. Because this folder you tried to rename is a child folder of a parent folder and the two folders have a different security entries, Windows will treat as a shared folder. This causes Explorer to give you the warning that you received.
Just double check, this must be a shared folder.
Hope this helps!

I did a backup using LaCie's software.
The backup folder properties say it is 2.5 gigs big. But the only sub-folder showing is 500 mbs.
Somewhere where I can't see it is 2 gigs of key data.

The LaCie software doesn't seem to have a restore function. The folder is not hidden. I've tried different views. When I copy to another location it shows that it is moving all the files that I can't see.

How can I get to the unseen data?

Answer:2.5 gb folder only showing few files

I'm not familiar with the LaCie backup software, but I'd suggest using a more mainstream alternative.

This is a new Acer with Windows 7 Home Premium.

I tried copying some .jpgs in subfolders from a different machine and pasting them onto the Acer. The copy and paste processes looked entirely normal.

On the Acer MyPictures properties shows 2.95 GB with 456 files and 24 folders which is correct. However with the exception of a couple of sub folders none of the .jpgs can be seen in Windows Explorer.

Start>Searching for .jpg shows all the files with a path C:\Users\userName\Pictures\ even though I only saved them in C:\Users\userName\Pictures\My Pictures . Not all the copied sub folders can be seen but those which can be seen show in both locations. Using Search it is possible to open and view any of the images whether or not the sub folder in which they are stored shows in Pictures and My Pictures.

I've been through Properties and don't have any hidden files.

Any help much appreciated.

In folder option, uncheck "Protect System File" I think that's what its call. It should be right under "Show Hidden Files". Give that a try.

i had to replace my pc and my kodak printer used to show exact image in devices and printers in my new pc x64 it doesnt i have a generic printer image and when i click on it i no longer get the kodak screen
! WTF.

Answer:devices not showing that previously did!

It sounds like the printer was installed automatically by Windows and not by installing the printer's driver package and then connecting the printer.

If this is what happened you could remove (delete) the printer from Devices, unplug it from the computer, reboot, and then install the printer software and drivers as directed with your product.

This would also be a good time to check the manufacturer's website to see if there is a more current software package available for download for x64.

I use this program Folder Lock ( to lock up a bunch of files in one folder.

Anyways, the way it works is, the program is installed and I just fire it up and type in my password and it opens up this folder called "Locker" where my files are. This folder is completely hidden (doesn't show up in Windows directory listing or anything) until I turn on the program and enter the password. To hide/encrypt the folder again, I just click on "Lock" on the software and that's it.

I fired up the program several hours ago like normal and entered the password...folder opened but NO files were there. When I right-click on the folder itself and click "Properties" it lists that the folder is holding the correct X amount of folders and taking up the correct X amount of space. I try copying the folder into another directory and Windows shows "trasnferring file X to blah", and goes through each and every file, but the new directory does the same thing. No files show up....tried burning the folder on a CD, tried sending over network to another computer, etc.

Basically, I think Folder Lock messed up and opens up the Locker folder but does not decrypt the files. Windows System Restore is worthless as usual, uninstalling and reinstalling Folder Lock only seems to make things worse. Installed Norton GoBack, deleted the files, and tried having Norton GoBack recover them....GoBack lists all the files and a... Read more

Greetings from New ZealandWhen I open a folder the folder opens but has no files showing inside the folder. This was caused by some sort of Trojan I think and I have run Spy hunter and PC tools antivirus programs which cleaned up some issues and now both scanning without picking up any virus/spyware.The spy hunter picked up the normal ad-ware stuff then alerted me to disable some files it thought where suspicious which I did and I am assuming one of these was the problem. The virus managed to also turn off the intelleguard protection in my virus software which I have since re installed and of which is now working correctly. In safe mode the folders are working correctly.I downloaded a folder association fix from to try and sort this but could not unzip it in normal mode.I did this in safe mode but no change in normal mode.I also did a restore point which again only worked in safe mode.I have read some other posts but can't solve problemI am at a loss to know what to do next.Any help appreciated.ThanksClint

Answer:Folder opening but not showing files

So the folder contents show up as they should in safe mode but the folder appears empty in normal mode? Does this happen with all folders? Both in safe mode and normal mode, open the folder and then from the toolbar click TOOLS--FOLDER OPTIONS--VIEW. Scroll down to 'hidden files and folders' and then 'hide protected operating system files'. Are the options marked the same in both safe and normal modes? I'm just trying to determine if something is changing the attributes in normal mode. Can't you unzip the folder association fix from safe mode or another computer and copy it to a disk? When you did the system restore did you choose a date from before the problem started? From safe mode do a 'disk cleanup' and delete all the temp and TIF files. Often stuff hides there. When you run virus/malware scans, have it scan all the files at least once. You indicate other things aren't working in normal mode. You may need to use the EXE file associaton fix too. Usuallly that fix will be an .reg file and you can use the MERGE option to install it--since .exe files won't run and regedit probably won't either.DAVEINCAPS - Made with REAL high fructose corn syrup.

Recently my computer was attacked by a virus. The virus made it so i couldn't access my C drive at all, but could still use all my start up progams. For some reason it also erased all of my desktop icons, except for diablo2 LOD (don't know why that one was still there....)
Anyway, after removing viruses with malware bytes i did a system restore to about 2 weeks prior. After the computer was done everything seemed fine. Computer was running fine ect.

My problem is files that were contained in my folders seem to have disappeared. I know the files are still on the hard drive, but some of my folders disappeared (these are folders i created loooong before what the restore date was) making me unable to access the files unless i remember their names and can type them in the windows explorer.

I discovered the files were still there when running a video game emulator, i clicked open rom, and just typed in the file name of one of my games i couldnt get to through my computer anymore, and it worked, game loaded up.

Anyone know how I can get my folders to come back, so i can easily access the files in them? If more info i needed let me know. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Files not showing up in folder after system restore

Run sfc /scannow from the cmd prompt/admin and let Windows 7 check and repair Windows 7 system files. If it finds a problem run it more times booting after each time until it fixes all the problems. Normally this will take 3 times. If that checks out okay and your icons still don't work, remove your old icons and go to the program.exe and right click and sent shortcut to desktop. See if that icon works. Many times when you remove a virus the damage that has been done has to be repaired.

Hello all,

I'm pulling my hairs out on this issue on a domain. Our AD is sitting on Windows Server 2012 R2. We have configured Folder Redirection for users under the domain. Everything is running as usual but Windows 7 clients cannot see DELETED files in the Recycle Bin.
There is no errors or problems with the Recycle Bin as far as I can tell since users CAN see their deleted files when login from a Windows 8.1 PC. The problem seems to be related to Windows 7 I then assume.

For example, User1 logs in from a Windows 7 PC in the domain and deletes a file on the Desktop. The Recycle Bin icon shows that there are deleted files in it but opening the the recycle bin shows no items at all. Same user logs in into the same account from
a Windows 8.1 Desktop and can see the files inside his recycle bin! Has anyone else ran into this issue before? I'd highly appreciate any suggestions.

If this is for an image file instead, then download and merge the .reg file for that file extension instead.

I have my Public Desktop folder set to share for everyone, so it can be accessed from other pc's on the home network. But when I move a file from my user desktop to the public desktop it suddenly adds the lock icon over it and can't be accessed from another pc, even though the public desktop still can. I have to change the permissions on the file every time, although this never used to be the case. I used to be able to move a file to the public desktop without having to manually "share" it each time.

All settings look correct: Sharing is enabled for the folder and set for full control "everyone", and public folder sharing is turned on.

Again, this just started and was working fine before. Would one of the recent security patches have changed something?

Answer:Files moved to shared public folder "locked"

I'm not sure how this could occur but in order for the Public folders to be shared you need to enable sharing through the Sharing tab of the main Public folder, otherwise anything placed in one of it's subfolders won't be sharable.

If the share is being moved from a folder with a lock then moving that folder to a Public folder won't remove the lock.

The main Public folder is located at the C:\Users\Public and should appear like the picture.

7 boxes see the files.  What would cause this?  Everything else in the app works as it should.
The apps are running as Administrator on the Windows 7 boxes and XP compatiblility mode.  I have tried it both ways.

Hey everyone.

I use both Linux (Ubuntu 10.04, 2.6.33-AMD64) and Windows 7 professional, and sometimes I get a little boggled at the apparent lack of functionality in W7 in the following situation.

I have a network share in the root of my drive that I've called "DropBox" where my boss and I can both put files to be shared via the network. I have a bunch of files in "Downloads" directory that I'd like to be able to share at various times, but would rather not have my downloads directory directly shared as it violates my sense of order. IE, I would much rather have one shared folder from which you can reach all the other content I need to share on the drive, and if I need to un-share something, simply delete the shortcut, and Voila! instant anti-sharing.

Figure 1. Clean Sharing

In Ubuntu, you can create a symlink within a shared folder that points to a non shared folder which allows network users to access that non-shared folder.

Does this functionality exist in W7?

Answer:Shared Shortcut to non-shared folder.

Okay, so I solved this issue on my own =) TGFG! The answer lies in the MKLink command.

Specifically: mklink /D /J Downloads "C:\Users\Robert\Downloads\"

Works like a charm. All networked machines have access to my non-shared directory through the shared folder, and it looks nice and clean on the viewers end.

Thanks for letting me rubber duck this one.

Quite a while ago I somehow managed to get Jdownloader to run on computer startup (Windows 7, Home Edition). Now that I don't use the program so often, and seeing that it really slows down startup, I would like to remove it. The problem is that I cannot seem to find the right startup folder. I seem to recall that when I originally put Jdownloader in the folder, there was nothing else in there. Anyway, I've tried following different suggestions found on internet (e.g., going to msconfig etc.), but none of these seem to work as I cannot find the program where I would expect it to be. And there is no option in the settings of the program itself.
Any ideas?

Answer:Removing a program previously placed in startup folder...

There is an alternative to using msconfig. I find the free software CCleaner very helpful in controlling what programs and components run at startup (there are always a lot more of them than you think). The list shown in cCleaner is always much longer than the listing under Startup programs. But you will need to know what you are doing in order not to mess up your system.
Run CCleaner > Tools button > Startup button. Carefully Disable or Delete.

Used to be, once upon a time, that when you went to 'save' photos off the web, your previously used folder would pop up for the saving. Now it never happens. Usually it is the larger site containing ALL the folders which pops up and I have to reselect my saving folder every time. Is there some entry you can check which tells Internet Explorer or Google Chrome to retain previous folder used when saving?
Thanks to anyone who can tip me off...

My Targus amu73ap mouse that was workinG perfectly with 8.1 is not working on either my PC or Asus T100 hybrid after the update to windows 10. I keep getting a message saying that the usb device malfunctioned.

Answer:Previously working USB device not recognized after Windows 10 update, how can I get it working?

You may need to try rolling back your USB drivers (or install the original drivers for your mouse from the manufacturer). I had a LAN driver get screwy with Win10 and I rolled it back to the original Win7 driver and it resolved the issue.

I have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons...

This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct. Any help much appreciated.

Hello Aster, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened may be able to fix it.

Hope this helps,

My Acoustic Research AWSEE2BK speakers were working about 2 weeks ago (last time I used them) and today they would not connect. I removed and reinstalled them a couple of times, this has worked in the past when I have not been able to connect to them. At this point, they are installed under Bluetooth devices, but they are not in the device manager - they used to be under sound and game controllers - and of course not in the manage audio devices, where they also used to be. Today they ended up under Peripheral bluetooth device in the device manager, and the drivers could not be installed. After much monkeying around, I uninstalled them again, and then they quit showing up in the device manager too. I have spent many hours on many forums and pretty much every manufacturers website I think, and cannot figure this out. My bluetooth radios are Dell Wireless 1704 Bluetooth v4.0+HS and Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator. I did go to the Broadcomm website and update the driver. I have also checked the Bluetooth support under features and made sure the settings were automatic and started, and I also re-started this feature. I have run the trouble shooter for playback devices and got no where because the speakers are not connected. Under device manager, when they were showing up as peripheral bluetooth devices, I tried to update the drivers from there. I have tried 'disabling' the built in computer speakers and reinstalling the BT speakers when the computer speakers were off and that did... Read more

I share files on my home network between my desktop PC and my laptop. I often move files between the two computers by placing folders on the desktops and then working with them or moving them to specific folders. The network for my laptop lists its desktop folder, but for the desktop PC, the topline \Users root folder is listed, not the desktop. Network and sharing work just fine. But how do I list the shared PC desktop folder so that I don?t have to drill down through the \Users file structure to reach the desktop folder?

Answer:List specific shared folder in Network, not root folder

Tried again, and now it's working correctly. Hmmmm...

I can't seem to predict when XP Pro SP2 will let me move a folder from SharedDocs\My Videos
to C:\ and when it won't! I don't get it. If I'm Owner don't I own it already?

Sometimes I can just grab the folder that I copied from another machine and placed in My Videos and just
drag it with the Left Mouse Button into another folder on C:\ and it just moves it by changing the directory entries. Then sometimes when I do that, it copies all the files!! Well with video files that's pretty slow!!

Anyone have a clue? Seems to be no rhyme or reason to it.

Answer:Move Folder Out Of Shared Folder Same Drive Wants To Copy?

Hello MilesAhead,I'm not absolutely sure, but some of the phrases in your problem description seem to indicate that this might be a variation of the "XP + mouse movement + mouse buttons + keyboard keystrokes" behavior described in the following post. The post deals with the unexpected copying of files when trying to delete them, but I thought the same (or a similar) principle might apply with respect to moving files/folders. Hi guys,
I have a shared folder which contains many folders for many users on
my network and to make users folders recognisable we chose to fix a
folder picture of every folder with the picture of the folder owner.
The problem is that those folders never have a constant folder picture
on all of my network computers as the picture always changes for some
reason, I've tried to set permissions on thumb.db file and also tried
fiddling with desktop.ini file but no use. Any ideas would be much
appreciated. Thanks.

I recently made a folder to share with an XP machine. When I look at the network through my seven machine I see the folder I shared and the USERS folder shared as well. Why is that?

I have the network setup at a home network. 7100 32 bit.

Answer:Why is the User folder shared when you share a folder?

I believe vista did this as well. So Windows 7 doesnt' work any differently from Vista in this regards.

Hi, I'm trying to open My Pictures on my wife's laptop but I get this error message Your folder can't be shared. This also happens to other folders on the laptop. I've tried to change Security Settings but it usually leads me to an endless layer of pop ups which finally ends with me being unable to change the setting. This is my wife's private home laptop and you can just imagine how important it is to be able to view pictures and videos of our grandchildren. I just need to relax the high security settings and make this work. Any help at all would be so appreciated.

Thank you,

I am running into an issue with users renaming files on a shared drive. When the users try to rename, they get the error "A file name can't contain any of the following characters: \ / : * ? < > |". However, neither the new or old filename contains
any of these characters, or any other invalid characters as far as I can determine, just alphanumeric characters and spaces. When they try to rename it again, it works without an issue.
I have found reports of this error being generated if the file path is too long, but all users are accessing this from a shared drive, and even if the share name is taken into account the file path and name are easily under 100 characters.
I have 3 users on 3 different systems reporting this issue, so I don't think it is user error.
The workstations are running Windows 7 Pro, SP1. The server is Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise, Service Pack 2.
The users are located at a remote site, and accessing the share over a site to site VPN. There are XP workstations at the site as well, that do not appear to be having the issue.
Any help, suggestions, or guidance is greatly appreciated!

I am trying to remove empty folders using Remove Empty Directories. I know of a few that are empty, and just ran a test to see if RED would detect they were empty. Well, to my surprise, I am finding that RED shows 1 (or more) file in these folders (a JPG at 0.00 MB), but it's not showing up in the folder. Is there any way I can have these show up in folders so I can search for all JPG's and delete them? Example:

I do have "Show hidden files, folders and drives" checked under folder options as well.

Answer:File not showing up in folder, but showing up in Remove Empty Directori

You could try running JPG Cleaner v2.6

I use this software on a regular basis. I'd suggest limiting it's use to only one problem folder on your machine as a test run.

Run the program with admin rights then from the GUI choose Add Folder then browse to your test folder. Additionally choose the option to delete Unknown Files and also untick the option to Create Backup Files.

Then choose Start and when the cleanup is completed there is an option to save a log file. Save the log file somewhere and have a look at it to view the results.

Additionally you could run the program again choosing the Delete Corrupt Files option.

If you're happy with the results - go ahead and add the other remaining folders or directories to be cleaned.

I've never encountered any problems using this software but as always before running any sort of cleaning product it's best to at least create a system restore point to fall back on and ideally have a system image backup handy.

Hi everybody,

I read the topics in the forum, but I did not found something that suits my needs, so I start a new thread.

I'm running a Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit on a nHP EliteBook 8470p laptop, and I'm experiencing a strange issue.
Connecting a USB device to the port, it works properly for some time. At a certain moment, while it is still plugged, I get an error of USB malfunction (code 43).
Since then, when I try to reconnect the device, it always failed with the below error message:

Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)

and I'm not able to succesfully reconnect device to my laptop any more.

The same things happened with two different USB devices, a pendrive and an external HDD.
In addiciton, I've tried both of them on two other different laptops running the same OS (Win 7 Enterprise 64bit), and they work without any issue.

Can anyone help me with any idea?

Thanks a lot

Hello. I have a folder on my computer that has many files as well as many folders in it. I want to alphabetize all of the itmems within this folder but the best I can do is have it show me all the folders in alphabetical order and then all the files will begin and be shown in alphabetical order. What im looking for is to have all the files and folders intertwined in alphabetical order and not folders and then files. I hope Im not confusing. Thanks for any help.

We are a small company.  We are running six windows 8 computers.  Our secretary works from home, the rest of us are in the same office.

The Admin Computer stores all of our work files within a folder called 'casework' (about 400GB).   The 'casework' folder is shared on the office network.  This 'casework' folder is also synced by Google Drive.

When our secretary works on her home computer and makes a new file, e.g. letterV2, the new file downloads to our 'casework' folder to the Admin Computer here at the office.  However, the new file cannot been seen on our other computers over the office

The newly created files are not shared to 'everyone' unless I un-share 'casework' from the network and then share 'casework' again.

The problem seems to be that the new files added by Google Drive are not inheriting the permissions of the 'casework' folder.

There are no options to change in Google Drive.  Is this a Windows8 problem? Will Windows10 have a fix for this? Are there any work arounds? Does our secretary need to work at the office?

Yours Hopefully

Answer:New files downloaded from cloud storage into shared folders don't inherit shared permissions for "Everyone"

may I know how that work case folder sync with google drive?

I suggest you contact Google drive first, we have limitation information regarding this product.

You can proof that there is no issue for sharing folder within your office network
I think that's not how online share drive work, unless your secretary can join your office network trough internet
this is the example, you can ask your secretary to send file trough share drive and assign 1 admin to sync and send it to your case work folder
But maybe you will be interested with Office 365

Hey guys,

I've got a small problem. I've got 3 computers (and a printer) set up on a Linksys wired router. They can all ping eachother. But, when I go into shared documents computer 1 doesn't see computer 3 and computer 3 doesn't see computer 1. But computer 2 can see computer 1 and 3 and 1 and 3 see computer 2. Like I said, they all ping, and they were all working before. I have websites that I work on and I need to have the shared documents working... Anybody know what wrong, it's just recently that it stopped working.

Answer:Shared Documents not showing up...

Did you share out a folder?
XP Pro or XP Homeless? Simple file sharing?
Same users on the host PC that the others log in using?
File and Print sharing excepted in the XP firewall? Or any 3rd party naggy software firewalls that need some local network wizard run?

Ok, so I installed the Nintendo USB Wifi drivers, right? Well now I can't access shared files on my computers. I think the drivers for the USB wifi might've mucked with something, but I'm not sure. I've tried to go to the workgroup and access the computers, but it says I don't have permission and the Network Path was not found. I don't know why it says I don't have permission, it worked before, and all the documents I want to share have the shared option with them, and guest accounts are enabled. I've also tried to add a network place, and even though I'm positive I typed the computer name and shared folder right, it says it's invalid. Does anyone have any suggestions about how I could fix this? I have a lot of files I want on my new computer. Thanks for replies.

P.S. If it makes any difference, I have a Hawking HWR45G Router and a HWU54G Wireless-G USB Adapter. I can still access the internet, but now when I try and reinstall the Nintendo drivers, it says "Internet Connection Sharing Error".

In Win7 right-clicking on an software icon at the foot of the screen shows previously opened files plus some permanently pinned there. That's true for all my icons but one, for Serif Webplus X. For some reason there are none, even when I open a file and resave it its shortcut doesn't appear in this right-click menu. Previously opened files do appear within the programme itself under "File" but nowhere else in Win 7. Any one know what's wrong?

A couple of years ago I backed up some files form my office machine (XP Pro) onto an external HDD. The files were encrypted. Today I tried accessing them and could not. I could not read, copy, move or delete these files, even though it said that I have full access permissions. Every time I tried doing something with the files, I got "access denied". I suspect that this is happening because encryption was done while my corporate password was different (it changes every 120 days). Can I get access to the data without knowing my old password? Thanks much!

Answer:Can't access previously encrypted files

I am assuming the files were encrypted with NTFS encryption. This encryption is based on a certificate that is a part of your user account. Changing your password will not be a problem. But if Windows was ever reinstalled since the files were encrypted, then you have a problem. If the computer is a member of a domain the domain admin may be able to recover them. I don't know of any other solution.
