Toshiba Satellite 6100 hard drive issue

Question: Toshiba Satellite 6100 hard drive issue

Hello all,

Here is my issue. I have a Toshiba Satellite 6100 that needs a new CMOS "RTC" battery. At the same time, the hard drive will not boot into windows. I can get as far as the screen that asks if I would like to boot into safe mode, or start windows normally. After I select one the computer is freezes.

Now, I have tried to install two "working" hard drives with no luck. I keep getting a IDE #0 error during the POST. I know both of these drives are working as I have tested them in different laptops.

I have set all of the BIOS settings to default after installing each drive.

The only thing I can think of is that the CMOS battery is playing a part in this.

Anyone have any input.

Preferred Solution: Toshiba Satellite 6100 hard drive issue

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Toshiba Satellite 6100 hard drive issue

since your CMOS needs replacing, the BIOS is resetting and forgetting your hard drive bootup. replace the battery. Then reseat the drive and reset bios to what it should be. You should not have issues after that.

I have bought a new Toshiba 40GB hard drive for my Satellite Pro 6100.
I have installed it in it's bay but it is not being recognised in the BIOS or when i try to reinstall using the recovery disc!
Would the bios recognise that there is a drive even if it is not formatted?
Am missing something?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Can't see new hard drive on my Satellite Pro 6100

It should work !

The drive also should be recognized even it is not formatted...

3 things you can do:
At boot up you can go into bootmenu and check if the drive is being recognized on the 1st controller.
If not check configuration of the drive (master/slave/cable select).

If this does not help check toshiba support website and download the latest bios (probably you already have it, check like mentioned above)

If this does not work your new drive (or worse: your controller) could be faulty. If the orignal drive still works on your laptop, check the 40gb drive in another laptop or PC with adapter to normal ATA-connection.

I have Satellite Pro 6100 and the hard drive has failed. Have bought a new hard drive but have no idea where to start to install it. Also i have the product key for windows xp pro but dont have a disk. Is there a way around getting one or does anyone have any ideas please?

Answer:Installing new hard drive on Satellite Pro 6100

Hmmmm ... it is very strange that you don?t have idea how to start. In the whole story there are two options only:
- for operating system installation you can use original Toshiba recovery disc that was delivered with this notebook. If you don?t have it then
- use Microsoft installation disc for OS installation. All drivers, tools and utilities must be installed additionally one by one. All of them you can find on Toshiba download page under > Support & Downloads

Please note: product key at the bottom belongs to original recovery image so you will probably not be able to use it for OS activation.

I was using a Toshiba SP 6100 until a few weeks ago because it started acting weird. It wouldnt boot at all, i called an authorized service center but they wanted me to pay 900 euros for a new mainboard, so i bought one off ebay ;-)
with the first mainboard (the original one it came with) the DC IN Led was on and battery was charging but it wouldnt let me turn it on.
With the second mainboard the DC IN LED was on and the Battery LED was flashing pretty fast (then i was confused).
Now i have two complete bottom parts (each with GF4 go and P4m 1,6GHz) which wont work at all.
Do you have any solutions for this?
If so I'd be happy :)

Answer:Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 wont boot at all

Hi Daniel,

Your description of the problem with your original motherboard definitely points to a board failure. What concerns me a little is the origin of the new motherboard.

Your new mother-board will also include the CMOS chip which will contain your BIOS. I can only presume that the new board contains a default BIOS rather than one specific to your Toshiba notebook. A Toshiba Service Agent has special techniques for loading the correct BIOS to enable the new mother-board to work.

You should check with the supplier of your new board what BIOS if any is loaded.

Is it OK to uninstall the Power Saver v5.04 from a SP6100 as it doesn't seem to work properly, or at all?

I have already been checking and changing the BIOS v1.90 power settings also accordingly, but the machine still neither ever power-off the hard drive nor will go to standby sleep.

The only things working somehow are the screen saver and screen power off, but very rarely according to the settings' timing ...

Best regards,

Pete V.

Answer:Satellite Pro 6100 and "Toshiba Power Saver"

Hello Pete

I?m really wondering the Power Saver doesn?t work well on your notebook. This tool is one of the best Toshiba designed tools and it is very useful if you want to optimize notebook power consumption.

I really don't know what is wrong there but if you are not satisfied you can remove it from the system or simply use different ?power scheme? in power options properties.
Maybe you should try to reinstall power saver.

Have you noticed some other issue with your SP 6100?

Hi,I am looking for change the hard drive in a Toshiba Satellite A30 laptop and I am unsure as to what type of connection it is. According to this link click here it is a ATA, however, it looks remarkably like an IDE connection as it has all of the pins coming out of it; just like that of an IDE connection...Can anyone point me in the right direction as to the correct hard drive type to purchase for this? Thanks in advanceAde_1

I just bought a 2nd hand TOSHIBA SATELLITE 1130-z24 laptop

But it only has a 10gb hard drive.

Can the BIOS see a 40gb, 60gb, 80gb or 160gb hard drive ?

Is the interface IDE ?

Answer:Hard drive for TOSHIBA SATELLITE 1130-z24

I doubt you could use bigger HDDs than 128GB because of the 48bit LBA.
The notebook seems to support a IDE controller but the 48bit LBA is supported since 2001, by ATA-6 defines Ultra DMA/100 (also called Ultra DMA mode 5 or Ultra-ATA100)

I think your IDE controller supports 28bit and therefore you should choose smaller 2.5? IDE HDDs.

Hi my 2tb hard drive is failing. My plan was to backup image the drive and recover the data onto a spare 500gb SSD i had but it wouldnt let me because the drive sizes are different. So my next plan was to just reinstall windows on the 500gb and rebuild the system manually however I cant find anywhere to download the Windows Operating system that came with this system. I think it was 8.1 when I got it with a free upgrade to Windows 10. Can anybody help, not sure how to get the operating system I paid for with this laptop from Toshiba.

Hi all

Please can someone help?

We own a Toshiba Satalite laptop with 500gb HD. Today whilst trying to download a file I had a warning message saying no disc space left!!!!

Confused by this I looked at the computer spec to notice 2 drives, C & D. I am no IT expert but think I'm correct its actually only I disc but partitioned into 2 drives, hence giving me C / D drives.

Here's where I am lost though! The C drive is almost full yet the D drive has only the original HDD recovery made when we 1st had the laptop, & is almost empty ( 240 odd gb left! )

Why is nothing on the D drive and to free up space on the C drive, how can I transfer various items from C to D? Do I simply copy - paste then delete from C or is it more complicated? Also, if I wanted to download straight to the D drive is this possible & if so, how is this carried out?

Hope some of you don't think the above is a bit dumb to ask but I really don't know what to look for and how to solve our usage problem other than asking for your help!

Many thanks in advance

Mark from Hereford, Uk

Answer:Why does my Toshiba Satellite hard drive have a second partition?

Honestly I'm kind of confused, but I'll try anyways... So you're 500GB HD is partitioned into 2 240GB partitions, correct? If this is the case the 1st one that is full is the partition where windows is located on, and is set to automatically save you're files to that partition. What you can do is move you're large files onto the D partition to make use of that space.

It can be a simple as copy/pasting you're files into that drive, or you can also set it to route anything saved to a certain file to the 2nd partition. For example, my "Downloads" folder automatically saves to my Data partition on my PC. Do do this simply go to whatever file it happens to be, right-click, properties, location, and from there click move and choose the 2nd partition. Hope this helps.

Hi all

I have two questions,
Customer has a Toshiba laptop that her 2 year old knocked off a work surface. Now it wont boot to Windows Vista it goes through the Toshiba POST. She says its making noises and i have heard it screech every now and again.
I am fairly certain shes damaged the hard drive, but does anyone else have any thoughts ?

Following on from that when using my Plexus USB 2.0 to SATA cable in Windows XP Pro i get the USB noise/ping to suggest its found it and it installs the driver, as it says in the windows pop up bubble. However nothing in disk management or explorer. Now is this because the disk is obviously damaged or because i am running XP and the Hard disk is Vista??

I didnt think it should matter as it should be seen as a USD device from my cable

Any comments would be great thanks

its damaged alright,

try sticking it in the freezer overnight and it may work enough to recover data off it, then bin it

My laptop overheated about a year ago, and since then I can only use it for about an hour at a time. First sign it's going to blue screen is that the hard drive starts clicking and about 5 mins later it dies.
Leave it to cool down for a couple of hours, then it's fine again. It's not the hard drive as i've tested it in another laptop.

Any ideas?
I desperately need it to work again, it's been the best laptop i've ever owned, and i hate the thought of having to buy a new one with a touchpad.

Answer:Satellite Pro 6100: Blue screen after overheating issue

Usually the notebook overheats because the cooling module cannot work properly.
I assume the blue screen appears because of this overheating.
In this case I would recommend checking the cooling fans. The fans cannot work properly because of the dust and debris.
The using of the vacuum cleaner hose is the easiest way to clean the fans.
But be careful.

Furthermore the place around the notebook should be free. It is important that the fans can ?take a breath?.

Hi Guys,
Could really do with some advice. I've tried to perform a recover on my laptop using the discs provided with the laptop when I bought it, as it was running very slow and thought I'd do a spring clean.
However, after loading it, and it all working, it is still very slow and it says there is a hard drive problem and I should back up.
I don't have a problem with this, or potentially wiping or replacing the hard drive and starting again. But I'm concerned that I will lose the partition on the hard drive set aside for the recovery (Toshiba did this) - and I don't want to lose my "copy" of windows 7.
I hope that makes sense and will love you forever if you can help :)

I have had my Toshiba Satellite Pro P200D-10P for 3 years now and have had a recurring problem. If I shut it down for any reason I then cannot reboot it thereafter, sometimes for several hours and at worst for several days. In BIOS, under 'Main' it has 'None' under the 'Hard Disk' title. If I try and boot it up I get the error; 'For Realtek RTL8100E/8101E Fast Ethernet Network Adapter v1.02 (060529). PXE-E61: 'Media test failure, check cable. PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.' I assume this is due to no hard drive being found in the boot sequence and LAN being used.

I have updated the version of BIOS to v1.07 and have tried removing each of the 1GB RAM to check if its due to bad RAM but that has not helped the issue.

I have removed and replaced the hard drive to ensure it is seated properly but that has not improved the problem.

I would greatly appreciate any help anyone can give.

Thank you.

I have a Toshiba Satellite which was recently lent to a very unsavvy user. When it was returned, I booted it up and all my desktop icons were gone (except for Recycle Bin and My Computer). A program called Windows Diagnostic, which I presume to be malware, runs on startup and spits out all kinds of problems such as "RAM temperature over 86 C" along with numerous hard drive errors.

I rebooted the computer in Diagnostic Mode and Windows Diagnostic did not run on startup. However, all my desktop icons were still gone. When I go to My Computer it displays the correct amount of free/used space for my hard drive, but when I try to view the contents there is only 1 file there called BOOTSECT.BAK (as far as I know this is just a file used by the operating system).

I'm just looking for some insight as to what is going on here. Is it simply a virus that I should be able to remove with a generic antivirus program?

I was considering reformatting before this happened. Would that maybe be just as good of a solution?

Thank you in advance for any input you are able to provide.

I was having problems with my Toshiba not starting up so I decided to run the Toshiba Recovery disk.  I have used this disk in the past and it worked fine, but this time when I placed it in the computer and tried to start, I got a message I have never seen.  The start up screen comes up, but then it turns black (like it is in dos) and the the following message appears:NTLDR is missing   Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restartWhen I press Ctrl+Alt+Del, the computer starts back up, but I get the same message.  What is this telling me?  How can I get past this and run my recovery disk?  Is my recovery disk corrupted?  If this is the case, where can I get a new one without having to take out a 2nd mortgage?  Any and all help would be appreciated.

Hello, Coming here once again for help.
Apparently our Toshiba Satellite laptop has been having a BSOD for a while and i didn't know about it, But my mother came to me the other day ( after the laptop had been running very very hot ) and said that it had stated that it had started in a special version of windows after a hard disk error and the drive should be backed up.
It warns that there is a problem with the hard drive and requests you run a back up.
(We've run a backup recently and appear to have all our stuff available ) One thing that puzzles me is the laptop appears to be running on an old version/backup with many programs and files missing.
I'm wondering If i need to purchase and replace the hard drive on it, and what diagnostics can be run to pinpoint the problem and what needs to be fixed.

Answer:Toshiba Satellite Hard Drive problem/BSOD

Is the computer starting in Safe Mode?
Safe Mode run a very few files and drivers.  One of the drivers it doesn't run is the driver for you specific graphics, it runs a native driver.  This make the image look almost like a cartoon by comparison.  You would also see a lack of icons since some of the applications are loaded in Safe Mode.
Is there more than one user account on this computer?
If there isn't is there only the one account requesting a password?

Toshiba Satellite A305 Laptop all original hardware

laptop electronics/electrical question:
I recently purchased a laptop (toshiba sattelite A305, sweet) that I have (recently) used before from a friend. I've since found that the power adapter theyve had plugged to it for who knows how long, was completely wrong and they had lost the old one and just plugged one up "that fit", Great.... (Com: toshiba 19v 3.95a...Power Adapter: Cannon 24v 2.2a probably a printer). I found this out after the Com started acting strangly slow and then wouldnt boot, stating that there was no hard drive found. I actually got it to boot one more time after this and havent since. So either the 24volts fried something or the 2.2 amps stressed something. I decided to get another hard drive and of couse to no avail. Still...... No hard drive found, check connections, blah blah blah. I plugged the old hard drive up to my desktop and it works fine. I checked the system setup and everthing is still there except the hard drive, even though it is installed correctly. Clock, Date, Ram, Video, Wireless, CD, everything works, can be seen in setup and hasnt changed. I set the defaults and still nothing. I tried the new drive and a new operating system (XP Pro is all I have right now, I will buy vista, which was on it, if I know I can make it work.) It loads windows setup but then same message......No Hard Drive.
So, Im sure youve guessed my question. I know the power supply isnt burnt ... Read more

Answer:Toshiba Satellite A305 (hard drive, Power?)

There isn't anywhere else you can get a new laptop motherboard for less than $300-$400. They're all that price.

If it did visibly fry something then it would be a transistor or capacitor close to the power source. It's much more likely that it simply destroyed the hard drive controller on the board and that you won't actually see anything.

Hi, my teenage son's Toshiba Satellite Laptop L455-S5975 won't boot from hard drive. On powering up, displays Toshiba logo and allows F2 to SETUP or F12 to Boot Menu. Does not allow F8 to Safe Mode. Without action, screen then goes to black with cursor in upper left corner. Have tried the following:

1. Made Windows 7 repair sik from other computer. Will boot from repair disk. Repair routine does not find problems.
2. Tried to restore to previous good restore point - spends much time copying files (hard drive seems to be working) but still will not reboot.
3. Removed hard drive and used EZ-CONNECT to put on USB port on other computer. Can see and copy files on hard drive.
4. Ran virus scan on hard drive using MALWAREBYTES. Found some minor viruses and repaired.
5. Reinstalled hard drive, tried booting into HDD Recovery mode by powering on while pressing "0". Displayed "HDD RECOVERY MODE" at bottom left of screen but did not do anything.
6. Tried the "remove battery, disconnect AC power, press power button for 30 seconds" trick. No success.

So now what? The hard drive seems to be okay but it's certainly not booting from there. The motherboard seems to be okay since it boots from a repair disk. I don't know what to try next.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer:Toshiba Satellite Laptop Won't Boot from Hard Drive

Is it a problem with the hardware or software?

Answer:Satellite pro 6100 dvd drive

Well, it?s not easy to say if it?s hardware or software problem.

But maybe these two steps can help you.

1. Right click on your drive in My Computer, and then select properties.
In the properties is a tick box to enable digital CD READ. Make sure this box is ticked.
2. In 'Autoplay' make sure that an appropriate task is associated with Music CD and not 'no action'.

Secondly I would recommend checking the decoder software settings.

I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite 1110 laptop. Everything works well apart from the hard drive, which frequently spins down after only 30 seconds of inactivity regardless of the Power Management settings. After a short while the HDD must spin back up, which causes a 2 second pause in whatever I'm doing. This can get quite annoying especially when the pauses occur when typing or flicking through menus (not to mention playing DVDs). This can occur dozens of times a day.

All settings in PM are set to never switch off the HDD. I've tried uninstalling Toshiba's PM software and used WinXP Home's but this made no difference. It also makes no difference if the machine is clean from a fresh install from the recovery CDs, or running with Service Pack 1a and all the latest drivers and updates.

There are no PM settings in the BIOS.

The spin up/down problem is more likely to happen when running the machine on battery power, or after bringing it home and running it on AC while the battery is charging. Even after the battery is full the HDD will keep spinning down. The spin up/down problem occurs for 2 or 3 days but then the next day may be fine with no occurences. I can't pick a pattern to it.

Toshiba tech support and technicians in Australia first claimed the problem didn't exist (it doesn't always happen, therefore demonstrations are a bit difficult), and later when they did witness the problem they just installed a new BIOS (which was alr... Read more

Howdy there Cluster2k...

Not real sure what's going on here at this point...

One thing to check, go into Device Manager-Click on View-Show hidden Devices, there should be a device called NT/AMP Legacy Support, doublclick on it, and you should see NT/AMP Legacy interface node, if it isn't allready disabled try disabling it, and see if it will help...

i want to install a Pioneer DVR-K14L DVD writer.
After the installation, the notebook show me an
error during the initialisation.

It is possible to use this type of Slimline DVD writer?
What kind of modus is important (master, slave or cable-select)?

Thank you and

best regards

Answer:Satellite Pro 6100: What drive and connection is supported - Master, Slave or CSEL?

I assume you get an IDE# 1 error message. Am I right?
The fact is that not all drives are compatible with the notebooks.
I'm not sure which settings the supported drive should have. But I surmise it's could be a CSEL.
However, I have found this DVD-RW drive which should be compatible; the part number is P000366780

But unfortunately, there is nothing about the pin assignment and the settings.
If you want to be 100% sure about the supported devices on your notebook so you should ask the Toshiba service partner in your country for the details

Ok so basically, my laptop broke down and I am currently hooked into my hard drive via usb cable to a different laptop, copying my files over to this laptop. Now my problem is that a while ago when I was running out of space on my laptop, I transfered over some files to an E: Drive (My Documents, My Music and My Pictures), that was just sitting there basically empty. I checked with a computer expert beforehand to see if it was safe to put files on this drive and he said yes.

What confuses me is, I always assumed that the C: drive was my hard drive, the one I am currently taking files off but the files on my hard drive appear to be the ones I had copied over to the hard drive a while ago! (My Documents, My Music and My Pictures)

So basically my question is, how can I get my files of off my C: Drive, or are they doomed to sink with my broken laptop? I didn't have anything outstandingly important on it, just a few programs and various folders I kind of want!

I have a last resort option to do a system recovery on my broken laptop, but I am afraid this could wipe out all those files on the C: Drive, can anyone confirm if this indeed would happen?

All support is appreciated!

Answer:Hard Drive issue on Satellite Pro A300

I?m a little bit confused about your posting? If you connect the internal notebook HDD to another computer you are able to backup all files from all partitions. Depending on the saved location, you can backup all files on another HDD.

If you connect the HDD to another computer, the partitions will have different drive letters but content is always the same.

When i bought my laptop the advisor at the importers told me i could get some adaptor so that i could put the second drive in to my laptop but now when i want to get the adaptor and another drive they want to charge me about a 3rd of the price of what i paid for the laptop!!! And i am paying dealer price for the goods... Just seems like daylight robbery to me!! Especially seeing that we all know the price of hard drives is so low!!

Can anyone help with a part number, or details of this adapter so that i can order one from overseas or find on ebay or something?!?!

Answer:Satellite P200 - Additional Hard drive issue

I don?t know what adaptor you are meaning exactly but if you want to use an second HD in this notebook then you should check firstly if the second HDD bay contains necessary HDD connector.

You should know that not all notebooks can be upgraded with the second HDD even if the second HDD bay is available!

So remove the second bay cover and check if there is a HDD connector!

Hello, I have recently installed a new 320GB hard drive (Seagate Momentus ST9320421AS) in my Toshiba Satellite M105-S3041 Laptop to replace the original 80GB drive.

I'm using Windows XP Service Pack 3, and the latest firmware (v2.90).

However, the new drive is being limited somehow to only around 130GB.

The size isn't reported in BIOS, just the model number of the drive. Windows Disk Management Utility reports size as: 127.81GB and using a Ubuntu Linux Live CD and Seagate Seatools also reports this drive to be around 130GB.

Therefore I believe it to be either a BIOS or hardware issue. Can anything be done to allow me to use the full capacity of this drive?

Please help. Thanks.

Answer:Satellite M105 - replacement Hard drive capacity issue

As far as I know some PC specialists uses special tools to manipulate BIOS and the whole HDD capacity can be used. But I really don?t know what you can do.
In my opinion you should use maximum supported HDD but if you need more capacity for private data you should use external 2,5? HDD.

Friend of mine bought yesterday 400 GB 2,5? for 99 Euros only. It is really good investment.

I have a 2 year old T130 which I use daily for work and have experienced no problems at all with it until a few days ago when I noticed that it was taking longer than usual to power up.

I checked that all my updates were up-to-date which they are as far as I'm aware both from Tempro and Windows. I ran an AVG scan and nothing came up out of the ordinary there and I still have over a third of space left on my hard drive.

Everything was fine for a couple of days and then yesterday when I tried to switch the laptop on it wouldn't power up at all-after several tries it has eventually come on and I've been keeping it in sleep/stand by mode until i figure out what is happening. I've run the PC Diagnostic Tool and everything is coming up as a PASS except for the hard disk which is showing up as FAIL. My USB pen is not registering either when I try to use it. This said when I checked the PC Health Monitor it said my HDD was working and that my Hard Disk Drive Status was 'good'.

I'm presuming from the above that it may be a hard drive/disk issue-what is my next step? Can this kind of thing be easily repaired? Am I covered for this as it is a product issue and less than five years since I purchased the laptop?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Satellite T130-Hard Drive/Disk-Start Up Issue

If the HDD is not present in BIOS, you have to replace the HDD with a new one.
Do you know how to access the BIOS?
Power up the unit and press the F2 button. Now you should check the first page of the BIOS. Usually the CD/DVD drive and the HDD should be listed with all the details.
If the BIOS could not recognize the HDD, then this means that HDD is faulty.

From my knowledge you could use an simple 2.5? HDD.
Here is a nice instruction containing some pictures and movie how to replace the HDD on T130 series.

Good luck

Question: Toshiba 6100 Pro

My toshiba laptop is giving me problems, Recently I turned it on and after a few moments I heard a click, as if something failed to start or something came to a quick halt.

then the screen was scrambled. It looked like the reception went bad like an old TV and the image began to roll.

I changed the display setting, and even reinstalled the display drivers but it still happens. Can you help me figure this one out?

I even went through the device manager and there were no conflicts with anything.

I have a Toshiba satellite s855-044 and am having issues with the power. I have looked up on countless forums and have been able to find people with similar issues but not the same. Basically the issue is that it will not turn on sometimes and wont show any symptoms of having power. Here is what i know about it:
1. The issue only comes up when i power off the laptop while it is unplugged.
2. None of the power indicators on the front light up, however when you look at it in a pitch black room it is VERY faintly blinking (indicator for when it is plugged in)
3. It turns back on usually after 10 or so hours of messing around with it. (Pulling plug out and putting it back in. Checking connections inside, etc.)
4. I have 2 batteries as well as 2 power adapters (chargers), trying different combinations of them do not seem to make a difference.
5. I have tried the method of unplugging and removing battery and holding the power button for around a minute, no results from that method.

If anybody could help me out it would be greatly appreciated!

Hello everyone, I have a Toshiba Satellite P105-S6114 running XP. For the year that I've had it it has run great.  As of lately I haven't been able to use a CD in the DVD-R drive.  The CD tray opens, I put a CD into it, it tries to read it( I see the light turn on and hear the cd spin) but it just stops and won't recognize it.  I try to open it in "My Computer" but it just prompts me to insert a cd into the drive.  I don't know what happened in the past month to make this happen.  The catch is this.....  It will play a DVD just fine.  It recognizes it and plays it right away.  I updated the driver and even deleted the driver and started fresh.  Nothing worked. Has anyone ever heard of this?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

Answer:Toshiba Satellite CD/DVD issue

Could be the particular CD you put in there. However, I once had a gateway laptop need a replacement Drive put in.  Maybe someone else has a better idea.

I bought this new, obviously some years ago.
XP Home and all original hardware.
Gave it to my sister about 4 years ago to run to run scientific apps that won't run on anything newer than XP.
In her possession, It was not used on a network---no internet at all.

It's screen went blank but the lights on the front of the case showed it loading/booting up.
So I attached it to an old CRT monitor. As the computer booted the screen filled with a few hundred colored vertical lines but finalized with the regular background, but no icons or start menu. Right clicking on it did nothing.

So I booted to an Acronis Boot disk and installed a known drive image I made 4 years ago that I knew was good. Same issue.

I then installed the factory image from my Toshiba Install disk and, with the CRT attached, it boots up normally with no apparent issues.

I still need to check the wiring connections of the laptop monitor but at least it's still useful with the external monitor.

I'd like to hand this back to my sister with confidence as she uses it at home to do scientific data analysis for her employer.
Any thoughts on what this issue might be, have been?
SysInfo to follow.

I have a toshiba Satellite L855-10P and my webcam was working fine until today when, during a skype video conference, it started showing black lines a bit like static and the quality decreased significantly. I used the webcam application to check if it wasn't an internet issue and the same problem occurred.

I restarted the computer and removed the protective plastic from the webcam and nothing changed. It's a brand new laptop, it's only 2 months old. Is there anything I can do to find out the nature of this problem or should I just go ahead and use the warranty?

**Edit: I changed the quality to 1280*700 and the image had great quality but when I changed it to anything lower than that quality the static came back.

2nd. when the screen does work, the laptop gets stuck at the motherboard logo screen and does not move from there.....unless..... you hit it.

whats wrong with the dumb thing? anybody help?

oh and like the thing is, it does function, the screen does turn on and the motherboard logo screen does change but u have to really hit it a few times..... other wise it freezes or the screen wont turn on.... ive ran linux off of a live cd on it so i know for a fact im right.

It is time to have the laptop serviced by a qualified technician, or to buy a new laptop. If you are familiar with removing memory or hard drive, you can try reseating them. The video cable from the LCD panel to the motherboard may be pinched or loose

I've been working on a friends A200-AHC308. It had a few viruses and was currently running XP, so I decided to reformat to XP-SP3. Prior to the reformat I attempted to back up all of his files to a USB flash drive, although the computer had problems recognizing the USB. I figured that the problem may have had something to do with a faulty driver installation so ignored it and continued with the format, having backed up his files on a DVD. After the reformat I am still having the same issue. All drivers are installed properly and nothing in Device Manager is popping up with a question mark. What happens is this: I plug the media in (whether it be an external HDD or a flashdrive) and the computer goes through its device wizard. It does one of two things:
Says the device was installed successfully although when attempting to access it through My Computer the drive does not load (it is present, although when attempting to open it I have no luck).
Says the device is not compatible.

Answer:Toshiba Satellite A200 USB Issue

If you have a second USB flash drive available, plug it into the Toshiba and see if you can read from/write to it.

If you can, it's likely the drive you backed the data up on is either going bad or was corrupted by the virus(es). If this is the case, any attempt at recovering the data should be done with extreme caution. If inserted into and accessed from another PC there is a good chance it will infect it. Go to the virus and malware section of the board for specific scanning and cleaning tips for the drive before you attempt to open or transfer any data from it.

If the second (clean) USB drive doesn't work, reboot the PC with the USB drive removed and try again. If it still fails, go to and download the Beta version of Microsoft's Fix-It Tool. XP SP3 had a few bugs; this tool fixes many of them.

Hope this helps.

With my new network now up and running, and all devices talking to each other as they should, I probed about in the (VM supplied) Netgear Superhubs settings and discovered I can change the frequency from 2.4 to 5gz which gets me away from local interference.
My iMac, Ipad iPhone and ATV work perfectly with the setting at 5, but laptop flatly refuses to even see the network. On 60-75% of boot attempts the result is an error meesage indicating the driver for the onboard ATI display adapater could not start correctly and that the system will restart. On this second reboot the system invariably starts normally.
Any ideas on what could be the issue? Does this machine require a BIOS update?.. or perhaps it is an issue brought on by the patching of the preinstalled XP home with service pack2.

Hello everyone. Nowadays, I see on this forum people are discussing about the CD/DVD issues on L30/L300/L350. I would like to share my experience on this issue and hope everyone shares your experience as well.

My laptop are Toshiba L30 PSL33 and Toshiba L300 PSLB2E. I am lucky that I have no problem with CD/DVD discs/drives as I can read/write/play CD/DVD smoothly. However, I used to have some problems with CD/DVD drive on my notebook. Here is my experience.

1) Make sure there is no other CD/DVD softwares on your computer (except the orginal software from Toshiba). Especially to those who have been used to using Nero. If you have problems, try to remove Nero and test with the one supported by Windows

2) If you still have problems, try to update the firmware of the DVD drive. It can be done by visiting the Toshiba Support Driver site ( Check what drive you have by looking at the Device Manager. Download the newest firmware from there and update your drive.

3) My last solution. If you have Vista pre-installed, try to get a XP version on your computer and do not install any other software. Test/copy a CD by using windows writing tool to see whether the problem is solved or not.

In my opinion. the main reasons you may encournter are: there are CD/DVD drives have XP firmware base and need to be updated so that they can be used in Vista; or there are software like Nero and PowerDVD are causing the conflict between the ACPI con... Read more

So, the problem started when my dad told me various recharge lights would not come one. Low and behold after opening it up I noticed the Power Pin within the DC housing was not there, in fact it dropped directly into my hand while I was opening it... So after a great deal of experimentation in trying to fix it... I have given up, if I jiggle it for a little while the lights will come on for a second... Please look at diagram for what I believe is accurate~

The connector just behind the housing... is that a ground? my limited knowledge on, on-board circuitry prevents me from repairing this myself.

if you can visually seek the break, then you know where it should connect in order to repair it. You need not know the polarity. But I don't recommend repairing this yourself unless you are good with a soldering iron. Take it to a shop.

The LCD screen could have been damaged by placing a heavy object on the top of the closed laptop or by bumping or dropping. It doesn't take much... The LCD panel might be under warranty. Its worth checking into. Otherwise, it is expensive to replace. They cannot be repaired

I hooked my Toshiba L455d (Windows 7) up to my TV (also a Toshiba) to use for DVDs, Netflix and internet access to TV (ABC/CBS/ I used the correct monitor cable and audio cable. Everything works ... except ...
I can't turn the laptop speakers off when the sound is also going through the TV. The TV speakers are louder, but the laptop speakers are loud enough that you can hear them too.
There are two audio plugs on the front of the laptop. One is for headphones. This one doesn't work with the TV. No sound at all. Works with headphones though. According to the Toshiba manual this is OK and how it should work.
The other one is for external speakers and works with the TV. But the laptop speakers work at the same time--well actually with a fraction of second difference, giving an echo quality to the sound. Very odd.
If I mute the laptop it mutes the TV too. I tried going into the sound control window in Windows 7 and all the sliders control both the TV and laptop sound. Not to mention that they tend to go up and down at the same time.
Any thoughts?

Answer:toshiba satellite L455 audio issue

A few quick corrections: the two jacks on the front are mic and headphones! That's why the one makes no sound--it's an input (mic) not an output. The headphones jack does make sound, just doesn't turn off the speakers. When you plug in the plug to the TV the computer asks what you just plugged in--headphones or a line out. If you chose headphones, the TV speakers don't work. If you choose line out then they do... but so do the PC speakers.

I purchased a used Toshiba Satellite 1730. The laptop has an ethernet jack in the back. 700mhz/128MB/ATI Rage Mobility/10GB HD in case your wondering.

All hardware is detected by Windows XP with exception of any kind of NIC.

On Toshiba's website there are Mini-PC LAN drivers (for Windows ME), but the spec's for the laptop do not list any NIC. It does list "accessories" and several different NICs though.

Linux is also oblivious to any NIC.

I updated the BIOS for the shear "fun of it" and possible miracle that it might help. No dice there.

Doubt anyone has any ideas, but hey if you have any experience with older Toshiba laptop's maybe you've had an experience like this.

Answer:Toshiba Satellite 1730 - Ethernet Issue

Go to and get the free Everest Home Edition.
That should tell you what hardware is in that laptop.
If you open it up, do you see any wires going from NIC-port to mobo, or is it just a dummy-port?
Some models have their active NIC on a docking station. Alternatively, you should be able to get a PCMCIA NIC.

Answer:Satellite X200-15k & Toshiba DVD Players issue

I have read about the same issue somewhere in this forum. I didn?t find the thread but I can remember that the Toshiba HD DVD player placed on the Toshiba driver page is only the patch (update).

So you will need the original Toshiba HD DVD which was preinstalled on the system to run the update.
I presume Toshiba don?t want to public the full version due to the copyrights policy.

The switching to the other external device works only if the HD DVD player was disabled. But the playing on both devices is not always possible due to the copy function.

Hope I could clarify this question. ;)

Best regards

My laptop has an issue whereby if it picks up too many of these signals (if they're in use when I'm online I presume), I can't get online (Connection says 'limited' in the Network sidebar).
If I un-select 'connect automatically' on the company specific signals, mine works again, briefly. As soon as I select another signal to un-select the previous one defaults to 'selected', and my signal generally goes again.

Main question then; how the heck to do I stop this laptop trying to automatically connect to the other signals? My connection is not a public one, nor are the others. I've looked for an option, but I really can't work out where it is!

Could my TV, which has a modem (like a TIVO) have an effect on it?

I'm using Windows 8, Google Chrome (shouldn't make a difference, but thought I'd mention it).
The signal for my property is down as the default.

Thanks for reading, hope you can help!

Answer:Issue with wireless signal on Toshiba Satellite C50-B-13N

I don't understand. Do you have a unique SSID (name of wireless network)? If you do, and have none of the others set for "connect automatically"there should be no attempt to connect to any other network.

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with a screen shot see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows Vista or latter I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Please direct me on where to go. I have a Toshiba Satellite U305 running windows Vista Home with SP2. I am trying to connect my Sprint OverdrivePro hotspot wirelessly and will not connect to internet. Connects to the wireless divice with local only connection but not to the internet. I have assured that the wireless is turned on. This happened to another wireless router (netgear) and was wondering if there is a fix. All my drivers are up to date.

Answer:Connectivity issue with Toshiba Satellite and OverdrivePro

Might be that your TCP/IP protocol might not be enabled.

With the Sprint OverdrivePro plugged in go to Start type in CMD right click on CMD above select "Run As Administrator"

Type in

Ipconfig /all

Hi All,

I have the above laptop, downloaded Windows 10 - then uninstalled it as it made my machine mega slow.

The + and - buttons to alter the volume no no longer work on the laptop unless you press the FN key.

I went into the control panel to change that, did as I was instructed but I still have to press it to get any volume. I rang Toshiba helpdesk and they couldn't solve the issue either.

Also, the volume has to be turned up to at least 50 to get any sound out as you cannot hear it otherwise. Someone said to do something to the BIOS but i have no idea as I am not tech at all.

Any help would be great as I have tried You Tube and online and not had any luck.

Thanks all.

Answer:Volume issue on Toshiba Satellite pro laptop

This could be it:

I set it so that I can press F1 to F12 without holding the Fn key. When I did that then I had to press Fn key to adjust volume with the - + keys that are on the F9 and F10 keys.

Also you may want to open the volume mixer to see if other volume levels are less that the master volume.

Hi. I've been having a problem with the left arrow key on my laptop computer (see title for model), and this only started happening today. The key now requires a much greater amount of pressure than usual for it to do anything; I practically have to mash it. Just so you know, I protect my computer fiercely and make sure not to spill anything on it, but there is a certain amount of free-floating pet hair in the house. Also, my laptop is one that allows you to remove individual keys (to say nothing for the little rubber jobbies underneath them). I'm at my wit's end and would like to avoid buying a replacement internal keyboard on EBay or even a hulking external one. Is there any way I can fix this? I'd really appreciate it if someone could help me out here.

Answer:Toshiba Satellite M45-S351 laptop keyboard issue

You can try removing and cleaning it, per Toshiba instructions, or blowing it out with compressed air. If the electrical contact is failing a replacement maybe the only option. Some laptops are easier to work on than others.

Ok I have done a ton of research online about what could be wrong with my laptop. But I cant find anything about my situation. When I plug the charger in I get a blue charge light on and it stays on. I dont have a battery so I cant tell you if it will charge. But to my knowledge I dont even need a battery to turn on the laptop. I can use AC. When I hit the power button the power light next to the charge light turns on for 5-10 seconds and then shuts off. I can do this over and over till I am blue in the face. By the way when i hit the power button nothing happens inside the laptop at all. No sound or movement. Now i have tried to hold the power button with out it being plugged in for 30 secs to 3 mins and still the same routine. I reseated the memory and also taken out the hard drive and DVD drive. Still nothing. Can someone help me to troubleshoot this machine.

PS does the fingerprint reader have anything to do with it not turning on?

My Toshiba sound/video seems to be on it's way out. All i get is crackling and video quality is slow and choppy. This has happened in the past but magically restores to good quality for no apparent reason. At start up sometimes the computer sounds like a Harley revving it's engine. The headphone jack gets the same crackling so I was thinking it isn't just the speakers.
Do i need a new motherboard?
I can still surf web and perform basic functions with it, just no sound/video.
Any help is appreciated.

Hello. I recently had an issue with a Toshiba laptop that has me a bit concerned.
On the 28th of July, I had decided to put my Satellite on standby to focus on other things at the moment sometime that afternoon. Normally, this didn't cause any problems and I was in fact, able to save energy. However, though, early that evening, something did unfortunately go wrong.
I pressed the power button, which 'woke' the PC and got me back to the login screen. I entered my password, and for a bit things seemed to be going well. And then it locked up in the middle of the process. I waited a couple of minutes, but to no avail; I was forced to reboot.
After that, everything seemed to be okay at first, but then, to my dismay, the 'System Failure' dialog came up. I let everything run its course, and after about half an hour, it finally came up with the System Restore option. I agreed to it, and let it restart.
Unfortunately, just when I thought everything was okay, I noticed my internet connection was no longer available. And neither was anything else network related, for that matter. Not even Help & Support could start. I soon discovered the ISATAP driver had stopped working(code 31 error), but I doubt this was the only problem now; eventually, I discovered that although initial boot-up wasn't affected, it now took up to 5 minutes for Windows to load. 5 minutes!

I've tried everything I can think of; Safe Mode, additional System Restores, Disk check... Read more

I have a Toshiba Satellite A100-065 notebook with Mocrosoft Vista operating system. Every now and then, I get a message on top of my screen stating "Toshiba Flash Cards are not responding". I have to close the message before I can proceed. What could be the problem and how can this be resolved?

Would appreciate any help out there.

Answer:Toshiba Flash Cards issue with Satellite A100-065

maybe because powersaving issues? Could be possible that the system is switching the flashcardreader or is stopping the flashcardservice due to this powersaving settings.

Just a little suggestion: remove all flashcard related tools/drivers, download the latest versions of that software from the toshiba website
( and reinstall it.

Maybe you can solve that error with performing a reinstall?

i found a solution, the problem was with KB888111 that is not working with SP3
the soultion is:
1. On the reference PC change the CSDVersion registry key to reflect XP SP2:

2. Restart the PC

3. Install KB888111xpsp2.exe (follow the link below and rename
KB888111XPSP2.txt to .exe)

4. Change the CSDVersion key back to reflect XP SP3 again:

inherited a laptop with a weird issue. internal dvd burner drive works for one use only. after you watch a movie, install a program, copy music/movie to your hard drive, the drive just dies. nothing will fix the issue aside from a hard reboot. i've connected an external drive, both IDE and SATA (have an adapter that will accept both), and they identify immediately, will read multiple discs, ect ect. can even install an OS with the external drive.

im stumped with this issue. i had reinstalled the OS when i got the laptop, drive worked fine, copied many movies (that i legally own to test out the copy issue the previous owner said it had) with no issues. a few days later, drive will only read once then refuses to read anything else.

the first thing i thought of was perhaps the mechanism that moves the lazer back to its starting point had crapped out.. but i have no real way to rest this. when the drive dies, insertion of a new disc causes it to make its usual whirr whirr reading noise.. but eventually comes back with a redundancy error (cannot read).

ive ordered an external drive off of newegg but was wondering if perhaps this could be motherboard-related.

Answer:weird DVD burner issue, toshiba satellite laptop

DVD Burner maybe is just simply crapping out. You could try to update the firmware on it, maybe.

The Toshiba Service Station told me to update Toshiba Display Utility. The comments said I'd have to manually uninstall this component in order to for the updated component to install. So I uninstalled this item but then the updated version was no longer there for me to install.
How do I get this back? Step by step guidance please.....

I'm having trouble fixing a Satellite C50-A Laptop, which was running Windows 8.1.

The main issue is a 'no bootable disk' error message.

The secondary issue, which is stopping me solving the first issue, is difficulty using the Toshiba USB recovery disk.

Any suggestions or advice on either of these problems would be much appreciated.

Troubleshooting this PC so far........................

The laptop has only had 13 months of light use.

I have no idea what caused the initial issue, but it's now giving a 'no bootable disk' error message.

( I'm not at all clear on how these recovery partitions are supposed to work. And I'm not familiar with UEFI / Secure Boot etc. Does this error message mean that the boot partition and the recovery partition both became corrupted simultaneously? Or are there some main boot files which might have become corrupt? )

I used a Linux live CD to access the drive, read-only, and managed to recover data. This would suggest to me that CD, CPU and RAM are all working okay, and the disk is still accessible. I'm not sure if this is a correct assumption.

It looks as if Windows has got itself mangled during some quick hibernate process, but I'm not competent enough to troubleshot a Toshiba partition / Windows 8.1 corruption issue from Linux.

So I reset the BIOS after using the Linux CD, and purchased a Toshiba USB Recovery stick.

Ideally, I'd like to just repair Windows, if that is all that is broken, and leave everything else as it was. ... Read more

Has anyone ever tried installing a SanDisk SSD to a Toshiba Satellite laptop or know if these two in general are compatible or not?

I am specificially looking into insalling a 240 GB SanDisk Ultra II SSD on my Toshiba A200-1BP, or PSAECE-01U00XTE, to replace the existing 160 GB Toshiba 2.5" SATA HDD (MK1637GSX).

The SSD seems to have the right form (2.5") and the interface (SATA) but I am not sure if these two are enough to ensure compatibility. Unfortunately, SanDisk says (unlike Crucial for example) it does not provide compatibility information for specific computer models. Thank you.

My Toshiba laptop was working fine with the AC adapter plugged in (the battery was on it's last breath and would not charge at all, so I always had to keep it plugged it). I had to move so I unplugged the laptop (did not shut down). After the move I tried turning it on and it would not.

The AC Led light is on, so it's not the adapter.
The Battery light is amber and flickering (it wasn't flickering before)
When I press the power button to power up the laptop - the Power and the CD/DVD Led lights go on, but not the HD light. And the screen stays blank.
I hear no sounds, seems the HD is completely dormant.

There are a few files on the HD that I absolutely have to have. I'm not too concerned with getting the laptop to be operational, I just need to get those files and the laptop can be recycled.

Any ideas? How to get it to power up at least once, so I could copy the files?

Answer:Toshiba Satellite power issue with AC adapter pluged in

Try taking the battery out of the laptop and powering the laptop on (with the AC adapter plugged in obviously). Another option for recovering the files would be to get an adapter to connect the laptop drive to a usb port on another pc.

I have a power up issue with my Toshiba Satellite A505-S6033. About a month ago my laptop suddenly shutoff and is showing no power incoming/charging. When I try removing the charger and plug and holdong down the power button it ends up not doing anything andiI've tried for about 5 mins. It does however light up for a split second when I remove the battery and plug the adapter in; it makes the power led flicker red and out again. I'm thinking it was just fried/motherboard dead but since its lighting up I'm hoping that's not the case.

My Toshiba Satellite Radius 12 P20W-C-106 has a display pixelation issue: in videos, in dark or black scenes, images gets blocky, pixelated, also color contouring appears. The experience in watching a movie or a youtube video is painful.

I have no idea why is causing this. I switched all color profiles in Chroma Tune, also I have used a ICC profile (X-Rite i1 Pro) and the problem appears in all profiles. Maybe is a problem of calibration but I did not get to the bottom of this yet.

I have attached 2 images: check the jacket of the guy in the left (Sopranos) and the right side of the face of the monster (Star Wars).

Any ideas are wellcome!

Not 100% sure that this is a hardware issue but that's my best guess after everything else that I've tried....

I am no longer able to type double letters/numbers or even use the backspace or arrow keys properly. If I try to type double letters (for example, the t's in letter), I have to either hit the space bar and then the backspace key to get the cursor back to the proper position after the first t to continue typing the next t or I have to arrow back to just before the first t that I typed so that it will allow me to type the second t then hit the END key to get the cursor back to the correct position to continue typing. (Hopefully that made sense!)

But the really strange, and frustrating, part about this is that this issue does not happen if I hold down the shift key while I type.

I have already tried the following in hopes of correcting this issue:
Adjust my key's typing delay speed - no change
Turn of my filter/sticky keys - no change
Clean out my keyboard - no change
Uninstall my keyboard driver and reboot - no change
Perform a system reset - no change

Anyone have additional ideas to solve this problem or what the issue may be?

I have a Toshiba satellite a305d-s6848. The specs for this can be found
here: (Sorry for no link, but I am apparently not allowed to do that yet.

I bought it new and it came with windows vista. A couple years later I upgraded to windows 7. Upgrading to the new OS was fine, but then later I needed to upgrage yet again to 64 bit. This, unfortunately was not as easy and I need to wipe the drive clean and start fresh.

Now there are a couple issues with the host controllers, the main being that I keep getting warnings saying that the devices I plug in can run faster if I were to use a high speed port (2.0). This confuses me because the USB ports are 2.0, but they are acting like they are 1.1. I have done everything I can think of to get these to function correctly, but nothing I do seems to work.

The second issue (which isn't as annoying) is that when I move the screen, the sound for connect / disconnect a USB device is played and the little popup for "new device connected" is shown. I am unsure why the screen is acting like it's a USB device. I have disabled the notifications and sounds for all ports now, but I would kind of like to know why this is happening.

Do anyone know how I can solve these problems? I have checked multiple forums, and have been searching for an answer for about 3 months now with no luck. I think I have provided enough information, but if a... Read more

Answer:windows 7 crashed twice on my toshiba satellite on 2 diferent hard dri

That usually means the drive is corrupted to the point that Windows cannot read it.Run Disk Check with both boxes checked for all HDDs and with Automatically fix file system errors checked for all SSDs. Post back your logs for the checks after finding them using Check Disk (chkdsk) - Read Event Viewer Log.
For any drives that do not give the message:
Windows has checked the file system and found no problems
run disk check again as above. In other words, if it says:
Windows has made corrections to the file system
after running the disk check, run the disk check again.
