Preferred Solution: Solved: Comp slow-internet slow-worm?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:Malware logs, firefox freeze, comp slow, internet explorer slow

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Pleases follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide
and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
**** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
Starting your computer in Safe mode

If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a differe... Read more

Ok, first off, thx for any help that you guys suggest!

Symptoms: My comp is a 3500+ with a 6800Gt and 1gig Ram. Given that, everything seems very very laggy. I try to open a simple folder it takes a min to open. I try to start msn messenger and my whole comp freezes for 30 while it try to perform that action.

My Comcast provided was at my house setting things up. He needed to access a website and even he noticed/said that i might have a worm/spyware problem.

Every single webpage take 30 sec if not more to load. More if there are pics and gif files. I have Comcast High Speed internet. So it shouldn't be doing this! Also, if i try to go gmail.google.com --- i get there, but when i try putting in a SN and password the page freezes and i can't even "END PROCESS." I have to restart my comp or just continue with a frozen IE page...

I've tried/scanned with: Norton Cororate Edition, SpyBot, SpyDoctor, Microsoft Spyware beta 1, AdAware SE.
Norton found nothing, all the others found some spyware stuff, deleted or quarentined them, but did not fix my problem.
I did go into "SAFE MODE" to do these scans prior to getting the LOG.

SRY that was sooooo long. Hope you can help! Thank you once again!

Hi,

My mother-in-laws computer is running very slowly, both opening windows, folders and the internet. She is running AVG, but I have a feeling that there may be stuff that is affecting the overall running. In Startup, there are a couple of items with just squares. Tried deleting them, but they come back.

Had to get onto the right computer to post this.

I've just connected my second computer up to my ADSL modem and the internet is very slow. Slower than a dialup connection. The other computer which is connected up to the same modem works as good as ever.

My first computer is a 98 machine 500Mhz connected to the internet via a USB port, external ethernet adaptor and then into the modem using RJ-45 connectors. this has worked well over the past few months.

My second computer is an XP machine with 2.4 Ghz processor. I have just installed an ethernet card to network the two computers. I have used a category 5 cable with RJ-45 connectors to connect between the modem and the ethernet card. The internet works on the second computer but is very slow. I think some settings must be wrong but I don't know what to do.

My modem is a speedtouch510 and has 4 RJ-45 connectors at the back to connect 4 computers.

Thanks
Steve

Answer:Slow internet with 2nd comp using ADSL

I can only guess that it's something like the MaxMTU size is wrong for the ADSL connection. Try cruising to SpeedGuide and downloading TCP Optimizer to setup the optimum MTU size.

My computer and my internet have been slower lately then they have been in the past. Also, I cant search my computer for files and a program I have called Cool Edit Pro can't open up because it cant find the Temp folder. I've ran Adaware and Antivir but I can't get Housecall to work. Answer:***Comp and Internet slow...PLEASE REVIEW LOG***

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Also if you have any programs that may prevent system changes (like Spybot's TeaTimer program, Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, and others), make sure you disable them before doing any of the fixes (or accept the changes for the fix we give you when asked by the programs).

Go to My Computer->Tools (or View)->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders (it's Show all files for Windows 98).
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Make sure you downloaded, installed, updated and ran these programs (run in Safe Mode) already - Ad-aware, Spybot and Ewido (only if you have Windows 2000 or XP). If you didn't, do them now. For more information, go to http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm

Hi all,
I have 2 computers, a Dell laptop and a Dell Desktop, they are recently new, have been working fine, they both have Vista. Just as of late last night the internet connections have been poor, either not connecting at all or slow. I have AVG 8.0 but it has not found any viruses....any help would be appreciated. thanks,

Answer:Solved: Internet connection slow, downloading slow

Hi Dano.
Are both pc's hardwired or one wireless through your router?
Are both slow at the same time?
Have you tried eliminating the router and hardwiring one pc directly through the modem.(will require a power on reset of the modem)?

Do a speed check
www.speakeasy.net/speedcheck
Any recent hardware/software changes?
Any error msgs ?

Is this cable or DSL?
Knowing some of these things will assist the techs here to delve further into the problem.

for about the last week or so i have noticed Windows is taking a lot longer to boot than usual. upwards of 4+ minutes.

i have run an AV scan, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan, Spybot S&D scan and cleaned up trash with CCleaner. i disabled all unnecessary services except for Avast which still runs the engine even though i disabled all the shields.

there were a few infections found which i was able to quarantine and delete.

my system is:

Internet Explorer runs painfully slow, some random pop-up windows at a low frequency. Firefox seems ok. Overall slowdown in computer performance.

Ctrl+Alt+Del shows Iexplorer.exe running with High Ram usage all the time.

Hello,

My computer has been running really irregularly. When I close or minimize any window, the application does actually close or minimize, but I can still see it. It's like there's a shadow of every window I close. It won't go away until I open something new. I can use that windows to "erase" the shadow of the window that was once there--weird!!! Also, sometime the icons on my desktop don't work or just disappear altogether. I have to restart the computer, which takes forever. My internet exploror is slower than usual, many pages freeze. Often, it doesn't respond. I've run all of my virus scans, spybot, trend mirco, panda software, and a whole bunch of other suggestions from other postings...to no avail..

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Cecilia

oh yeah, this is my computer:

System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

Manufactured and Supported by:
PC
Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz
2.39 GHz, 448 MB of RA

Answer:Slow comp, internet, disappearing icons

Try SysTweak's System Optimizer.
Ofcourse create a restore point and backup registry before that.
Hope I helped

Hi

I picked up virus somehow.

I have kaspersky and it's detect email-worm. win32.jolee.eui on userini.exe as infected. It delete those files and than computer restarts and than again it find same infected exe.

Somehow kaspersky can't remove it. I even try from safe mode.

I downloaded combofix so I should start it or consulted with some of you?! It's written that combofix is powerful tool.

Thanx in advance

Answer:Comp running slow......user switch exremely slow

Hi and welcome to TSF! I will say right off that Norton (aka the resource HOG) is probably your biggest issue. There are a few things to clean here though......

This took me one Google search to find:
msnappau.exe is part of the Microsoft MSN toolbar system, which initiates an update facility for the MSN downloadable toolbar. Disabling or enabling this is down to user preference.

Question: [SOLVED] slow comp

Answer:[SOLVED] slow comp

There are a hundred reasons why a comp can go slow. Anything from too many applications running to a cockroach crawling on the motherboard.

Is it only slow with the web browser?
If so, what browser are you using?
Is it slow when using other apps like pulling up files in Windows Explorer?
Have you recently installed any software?

I'm not sure if my computer is infected or if it's just getting old (about 4 years) but it's gotten incredibly slow just in the past couple months. My internet connection has begun to fail at random, but other devices (tablet, phones) still are connected just fine. I update and run malwarebytes daily but nothing is ever found. Today the wifi light on the actual hardware of the laptop would not turn on, and no internet connection could be found. Finally with some digging, and I don't know really what I even did, the connection came back. We did just get a "faster, better" modem from comcast a while ago which is when the problems seemed to start, but as I said before, other devices like phones or tablets have no connectivity issues.

I have a Gateway NV55C notebook running Windows7.

Thank you so much!

Answer:Not sure if infected but comp is suddenly slow and internet spotty.

Hi! I am new here. I heard this is a great place to post all my computer problems. I hope I can get some help here.

My computer is very slow and so is my internet. I can't manage to get some sites open because it is too slow. I do not know what is wrong with it but it looks like there is a virus or something like that. I do not know exactly what to do but I wish you can help me with this.

This is my hijackThis log file.

Some kind of trojan invaded my computer I believe. I ran Symantec and it deleted a bunch of entries but the auto-protect kept popping up to block something labeled Downloader and file "kernel32.exe" I was eventually able to delete it in safe mode after turning off the system restore. But then the auto-protect kept blocking Adware.Webbuying with file name qmlqrib.dll (both of these were in system32 folder according to the log), but there was no file by that name anywhere. I ran Ad-Aware which removed two entries with a level 10 threat assessment named BookedSpace and Win32.TrojanClicker, however the Adware.Webbuying continued to be blocked by Symantec. I then ran Spybot which found and deleted numerous entries and I no longer get auto-protect for Adware.Webbuying. However, I continue to get pop-ups, internet is slower, computer is slower, and it seems to prevent downloads after a certain point in time (haven't made it past 20% of a file from various different sites ranging from 4-20 MB). Who knows what else it is doing; hopefully not downloading my personal data. Please lend me a hand if you can. Thanks. I have included my HijackThis log:

Hi, when I shut down windows it seems to hang for up to 5 minutes like its frozen before it finally shuts. I have enclosed a hjt log which seems ok except for a 023 line item netsvc.exe. Is this a worm? on googling I found conflicting information. I did try to get hjt to fix but it wont be moved. I dl'd the superantispyware and it found nothing, i also dl'd vundofix and that was clear too. Below is hjt log..

I've had this Dell Dimension 5100 for almost a year now, and everything has been flawless until recently. Now when I turn it on, it takes a long time to stop loading everything - it sits at the "Welcome" screen for 3x as long as before, then when the desktop shows up, it's only the wallpaper. Eventually the icons appear. After that it still takes quite a bit longer than earlier for the hard drive to settle down. Also, if I use standby, my computer becomes slower and less responsive (especially while surfing), eventually getting to the point where I just have to restart it. Sometimes it won't even turn off unless I hold the button down for 5 seconds. I have clicked on the "Turn Off" icon and left the house for work, only to return to the "Windows is saving your settings..." screen 9 hours later. Spyware/virus/HiJack scans produce nothing of significance. I have run WindowBlinds for months as well, with no issues until the same time recently when "the memory cannot be read..." errors started popping up. Re-install did nothing, so I no longer run it, and the errors are now gone. I'm at my wit's end. Any suggestions? Thanks a bunch...

Answer:super-slow startup, slow glitchy comp

Well when you have windowsblinds using it to make you a desktop that uses up quite a bit of memory and makes your computer take a while to start up. Also you might have quite a bit of stuff in your start up. To check this click start run and type in msconfig and uncheck everything you don't need in start up. If you want to make it easier you can get a tuneup utilities trial and use the start up manager and delete any and all start up entries you don't need as well as restore them if you need them later. Also you might need to run the registry cleaner that comes with the trial of tuneup utilities. It would be easier to install it and just click on the 1 click maintenace on the desktop if you installed it and checked the option to put it on your desktop. Here is the link to it: http://www.tune-up.com/download/tu2006/ all you have to do is enter you email address and click the button and it will download. If you need any further help just reply.

I could really use some help. i just bought my computer a couple of months ago and it is going really slowly. it takes forever for any application to start. whenever i'm watching a movie, it stops and i have to start it again because I think some program in the background starts up. in the process list, the IEXPLORE.EXE keeps turning on and off. and when i dont have a connection to the internet, every few seconds this window comes up asking if I want to work offline or try again. This is really frustrating and any help anyone could give me would be awesome. thanks in advance for everything. this is my log file. anything to help this computer go faster and get rid of all the unneccesary stuff and spyware would be sooo great.

Would someone be able to check out my HJT log.

I have a Acer Aspire 5610 with the following specs.

Windows Vista Home Premium SP1
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo CPU T2350 1.86GHz
Memory (RAM): 1.00GB
System Type: 32-bit Operating System

The problem I am encountering is a really slow OS. It takes a few minutes usually to open a system folder, or to open anything.

Usually when I am online it takes forever to load. Even if I am on a wired connection. When my desktop can get on and operate like normal. I have both Ad-aware and AVG and neither one have picked anything up.

Thanks in advance to who ever answers this. I appreciate it as does my wife, whose comp this is.

JMody

Answer:[SOLVED] Comp running way too slow

Hi JMody. . .

First off, I suggest that you run only one anti-virus as they tend to conflict w/each other. Also if you have a 3rd party firewall installed it could be interfering w/system services and the Internet.

Most important is that you have 1gb RAM. You should upgrade to 2gb minimum for Vista especially with resource intensive programs like AIM6 and Apple.

I would start w/un-installing Ad-Aware and AVG firewall, if present. Then reset the Windows firewall to default settings. But look into that RAM upgrade.

It started when I trid to click on a game I purchased from iwin.com. The game nor iwins game console would start. Then my AT&T anti virus popped up and said there was a
W32/BACKDOOR.AJFO in IwinGames.Shookie.dll I stopped messing with the games and removed everything I could find from Iwin. Computer has been real sluggish since then. Ran a bunch of my scans etc. trying to clean all up. Ran a Dr. Web cureit this morning and I'm hoping most of what it shows are false positives because alot has to do with my Bellsouth/ AT&T software. Please check my HJT log to see if theres more I need to do. I'll also post the cureit report too. Thanks so much.

Hello there everyone,

recently i have noticed my computer has started to slow down, when i start the comp the system tray items used to apear immediately but now is soo slow.

i built this computer myself these are the specs

MOBO : MSI 875
CPU : P4 3.2 HT
RAM : Kingston 1 gig ddr
Graphics : Radeon 9600
ZoneAlarm pro 4.5
AVG 7 free
Lavasoft adaware pro
Track Eraser pro
Spbot search and destroy 1.4
RegScrubXP
EWIDO
HijackThis

windows firewall is off..

i dont know if the slowness is a result of installing Music Match? but the computer has surely become slower on startup.

i did however have some spyware on my comp which i removed, this was a result of installing a trial version of ZoneAlarm 6.5 WHICH IS SOOO UNSTABLE...

Hi! I'm using a samsung  laptop with windows 7 32 bit os and  intel icore i3 processor  with 4gb ram.

The other week, I started experiencing this slow computer and browsing. Then I started to check on the processes and services that is running through the task manager. I saw that there is 100% cpu usage even if I am only using vlc. I ran rkill and it terminated one malware process called rezip.exe. I usually ran rkill whenever I feel like scanning my computer for viruses or malware then I use jrt, mbam and adware cleaner then emsisoft anti malware; and it's the first time I've encountered that rezip.exe being terminated by rkill. Then last week, as I did the same to somehow eliminate the malware, it detected a missing service called tbs. So in an effort to resolve this on my own, after I ran rkill, I ran jrt, then adware cleaner,  and mbam. but nothing was found. Then I started to search the internet for whatever the culprit maybe. I saw that a some malwares and rootkits can bypass an outdated program and enter your system so I have decided to download updates for windows. Over 3 days, I tried to do the same thing, but nothing was found and the win update downloader won't download anything and because of the length of time of waiting I leave my laptop on while I hope to update it when I wake up the next day. I also tried to download updates for NVIDIA  since it is my graphics driver and it always pops in the taskbar but I can't seem to download... Read more

For some odd reason, in the past 4 weeks, my streaming video has become VERY slow, and I do not know why. I have a high-speed cable connection, the same I have had for the past 6 months. It is slow, sound-with-stil-images and/or constantly rebuffering, and this is true with WIndows Media, Winamp, Realplayer and even Flash videos (on YouTube for example). I cannot take it anymore. I tried this Hijackthis thing, and this is my log:

Hi. Just wanted to say first, Thank you! for this incredible website and the work you do. I've tried to use it to answer questions and problems I have but right now I am at a halt. My computer runs very slow and also takes about 10 minutes to load/startup and I have about 7 programs on startup. I've tried to use alot of the spyware, antivirus and optimizing software(spybot, AVG, spygaurd, advanced windows care, ccleaner, superspywareguard, ad-aware, and more) out there to help but there's still problems. Here are some of my computer specs:

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Media Center edition, with Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel Centrino Pentium M processor, 1.60 GHz
Video Device: Ati Mobility Radeon X300
Hard Disk: 60 GB
Physical Memory: 1,535 MB (System Cache: 7958K)
Kernal Memory: 102108 K (Paged: 77204K, Nonpaged: 24896K)
Handles: 14955
Threads: 609
Processes: 63
I've tried to find what processes are running that could be malicious but they all seem to check out ok with the programs I've used. I have never formatted my computer - could that be the problem? Many thanks.

Hello, My computer started giving me problems a week or so ago in the form of popups while online, it also slowed way down. At one point I could hardly access websites. At the time I was using the windows firewall,AVG 8.0(which I have since learned is pretty lousy compared to the older versions),and Adaware 08.I did much research and scanned with Kaspersky online scanner. It found several variants of win32monder.(YQ,MX,YS,YO,YN) , and Email worm win32.tantos B. Adaware found win32virtumonde.yeb,and win32ezula.ak
I have since got rid of AVG and installed Avast. I also got rid of Adaware and installed Spywareblaster and Spybot S&D and switched to the Zonealarm firewall. I still have these problems but not as severe.
I am now in need of someone much more educated in these matters than I am to remedy my problems. Any help would be greatlly appreciated, Thank you.

Hi everyone, first time over here!

I've got a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop, with Windows XP and two days ago it got overrun with viruses and god knows what. It was the popups which alerted me - my McAfee Security Centre didn't pick anything up on their scan, so I bought PC Tools Spyware Doctor, which did pick up viruses. I still had problems though so used the website hackerwatch.org's port scan to see where my comp weaknesses are - but it didn't detect any. Another Spyware Doctor scan picked up more viruses though. I also got the google toolbar to try and stop the popups but that had no effect.

So I got Ad-Aware 2007 and Windows Defender. My comp crashed while they were scanning, but when I rebooted my comp they both said my comp was clean.

It was running so slow I got rid of one of the security centres (the Spyware Doctor one).

Now the popups have stopped, but my comp is still really slow - when I type it keeps missing what I type; it can tell I've pressed a key 'cause it will leave a space, but it won't put the actual letter there, and it keeps missing the delete and space buttons. It takes ages to switch from window to window as well, and load up the pages initially.

Can anybody tell me if my comp is actually free of viruses etc now? And is my comp screwed from them or can I get it working the way it used to?

I'll post my hijackthis log below - really hope someone can help! Thanks for taking the time to read this!

I have a Compaq Presario SR1315CL-B it was a little slow so i upgraded it to 2Gb of ram ... worked good

then i had it started slowing down mainly with more than one program open but especially when i open internet explorer or firefox (latest versions) the system performance goes to a 100% for about 30 sec. -1min in which i can open other programs but its very slow then once firefox opens i can surf the web ok.. and the comp performance is down from 100% to 5-15% when i have about 4-5 tabs open and it works fine not to slow but def. slower than it used to be about 3 months ago

but idk why it takes so long and it seems that now it takes about 2-3 min to open about 3 months after it started and every day it seems to take longer what i run mcafee and spybot and ccleaner, auslogics disk defrag, everything seems to be fine what can i do ? please help thanks .

I'm not sure if this is hardware or software but...
Just recently (a few weeks ago) my hard drive started constantly spinning. It doesn't matter what I'm doing, or doing nothing at all.
I've ran a Virus Scan (AVG and Mcafee) Ran Spyware/Malware ect.. Also did a disk clean up/defrag but the problem only seems to be getting worse. In the last week the internet has slowed down, not my actual connection it doesn't seem, but when I first open it, it seems to freeze for a moment. This happens with every program I use, Media player for example, was listening to music and the program froze briefly, the song started the skip and what not. Also many programs keep going to a 'not responding' state. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, and I've had this computer less then a year.
I'm not sure what other steps to take other then a reformat which I would really rather not do.

Running older PC Clone 2.0 Ghz Dual CPU Pentium, 1GB Ram Win XP Home Edition system.

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. So, finally, I ran ESET Free Online Scanner, and it detected "Win32/Toolbar.Babylon and Win32/TopMedia.a" virus infections. Scan took about 2 1/2 hours. I set it to search the drives/ar... Read more

Hello, thanks in advance for the help.

About ten months ago I purchased a new 150gb hard drive (E drive). Having a lot of stuff on my old maxtor 12gb hard drive, I had a friend install the new E drive while attempting to keep the old maxtor working. When this failed, I purchased a new 75gb drive to be my "C" drive, copied over the stuff from my maxtor 12gb, and planned never to use it again for storage beyond what is already on it, and use my new E drive for all my other needs.

A couple days ago I went to install an old game (starcraft to be exact) and discovered I had an instance of the game still somewhere on my computer. While searching for this, I re-discovered my maxtor backup folder, which included everything I had backed up 10 months ago, including what appears to be the full version of Windows XP...meaning I (think) I have a copy of Windows XP on both my C drive and my E drive.

Uninstall programs as well as add/remove hardware was not working for me, so I deleted the starcraft folder from the "maxtorbackup" folder on my E drive. I was then able to install the game and play, however upon my next system restart I've noticed everything runs a lot slower. Everything from opening new programs to switching worksheets in excel.

If I haven't completely confused you yet, I was wondering if the changes I made to the "maxtorbackup" folder could be causing this slowdown. My secondary question is if the maxtorbackup folder needs to even ... Read more

Good Afternoon,

I am looking at a computer that a friend of mine is using at his office. The computer was his sons and when the son moved away, my buddy brought the computer in to work to use it as a work computer. In all my years using computers I don't think I have ever seen a slower computer. It is only 3 years old but when you try to even just bring up the start menu it takes a full minute and a half before it displays anything. I've gone in to MSCONFIG and turned off all the start up programs just so I can navigate around. I have ran Hijack this and will post the findings.

Answer:Help! Slow Computer, Slow Internet. Slow, Slow, Slow!

Hi MaryJane,Sorry for the delay, this forum is really swamped right now. I don't see any positive signs of malware in your log, although there is one thing that I am unsure about. I'll get to that in a minute. Before we do rootkit scans and use some other tools to confirm that malware is not the problem, let's do a quick check of resources.Press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to open Task Manager, then click on the Processes tab. Place a check next to Show processes from all users. Note the numbers at the bottom, CPU usage should be running at 0 to no more than five percent if your system is idle (no background tasks running). If that is not the case, scroll down and see if any of the processes is running at a high percentage of CPU usage. On a normal system at idle the System Idle Process should show about 98 percent, meaning nothing else is using the CPU. The next columns to the right, memory usage and peak memory usage, may also show something out of line if one process is using a large amount of memory. If you see anything showing high CPU usage or high Memory usage, make a note of it.Now, click the Performance tab. The key numbers here are in the Commit Charge box -- The Total and Peak figures; and in the Physical Memory box, the Total figure. Make a note of these three numbers. I would like to see them, but I can tell you what I'm looking for: basically, any time the Commit Charge exceeds the total physical memory, Windows will have to constantly swap d... Read more

I recently installed the windows updates for my computer and as the title explains, it made my computer super slow for some reason. Once I log on, that is when it becomes unbearably slow. Also, the browser connects, but both IE and Firefox keep getting the error "connection timed out"...and that is for any website. I can get to my homepage (google), but once I try to go to any other page, it always times out.

I have windows XP SP2...

Answer:[SOLVED] Windows Update renders comp SUPER SLOW and no browser connect

Also...my network connection is now getting the bubble; "limited or no connectivity"...and when I disable/enable it then it works for a brief minute and repeats the limited or no connectivity thing. I can see that I am connected, I see my network, the signal strength is 4 out of the 5 bars, but the "activity" says 1,528 packets sent and 4 received...?

Okay I'm going to do a full PC check but all my systems seem fine as of yesterday. A little background to help others help me I'm on a Windows Small Business Server 2003 environment with no other server connection but one machine, I have 3 shared drives created on the server and am running Shared Point Services 2.0 as well and all my computers on the network have a login script assigned to them when booting onto the network so their drives are automatically mapped. Oh and I have POS old Sony laptop running as a proxy using Winproxy 5.0, but it has about a gig of speed and 512 RAM and the connection goes: in from the outside, to the proxy, line directly to server, server assigns ISP's by DHCP internally.

My computer is a Dell Optiplex 2600

Here's a question to start from another thread I posted: About two months back or so I noticed if I put cd's into my PC at work I must have downloaded a rootkit or something because now I cannot play some cd's that I can play on my home computer and others in the office. Now in the future is is safer to burn MP3's on an external harddrive and listen that way or avoid Sony cd's?

Now to the problem, I put in a burned cd this morning it starts up WMP 10 fine and I'm listening to Back in Black then all of a sudden my computer freezes. Crashes my financial program which I think nothing of because I am using Master Builder 11.2 by ... Read more

Hello.

Win XP Pro SP3
Pentium D CPU @ 3.00 GHz
1G ram

This machine is on a server-based network in a nonprofit. I am the "IT person" but frankly, I am not an IT professional... I'm in charge of it simply because I have some basic "do it yourself" skills!

The machine was running very slowly for the past week, with hangs that lasted from 30 seconds to a few minutes, but always did come back. Shut down was taking over 2 minutes; restart was taking nearly 5 minutes. Programs such as MS Word 2003 opened very slowly. Our employee who uses this didn't mention all this to me until...

During an MS auto update this past Wednesday, when XP rebooted to add 11 updates, the machine hung entirely. It took 6 hours before the first update was installed, then sat another 2 hours showing "2 of 11" and "do not turn off or restart your machine."

I contacted MS and after heehawing around for a while, the person said to go ahead and do a hard shut down. It rebooted, slightly faster, and did not hang again, so last night, I was able run Ccleaner, then Spybot Search and Destroy and Malwarebytes. No malware. The machine normally runs Vipre Enterprise (which will show as SBEAgent in the log below); the Vipre log for the past three days for the machine is clean.

I also scanned the disk for errors (none found) last night. And, I changed the page file size so that its virtual memory is now 2500 to 3048.

I then manually updated the remaining 9 OS up... Read more

I have been reading on different sites to download different anti-spyware programs. Right now I have:

1. Ad-aware
2. Spybot
3. IE Spyad w/ Zoned Out
4. PC pitstop driver alert
5. Spyware Blaster
6. ATF Cleaner
7. PC Pitstop Driver Alert
8. Hosts Xpert
9. Windows Defender

Will these slow down my system, or make it take longer to shut down and restart my comp? Is there anything on this list that I should not have? If it's not a big deal, does anyone recommend any more apps I should download or things to do to make my system better?

If I install almost all of the reputable spyware removers and system optimizers, etc. on my comp, will it slow down my system? Will there be any negative consequences?

Right now I would opt for a faster computer over a secure one, so I would prefer speed over an increased possibility of a virus, etc (still want an anti-virus though). I'd like my comp to shut down and restart quickly, but of course it's not that big of a deal.

With that in mind...I was wondering what the computer "gurus" think is the best way I can optimize my computer? If you have a lot of experience, then what would/do you do, and what do you download for your comp? What programs should I download or buy? I'm willing to pay money for programs that I can buy at the store or pay to activate full versions of trial software, etc. if it will help optimize my computer or help my computer's speed. My system specifications are at the bottom of this ... Read more

Answer:Newbie questions. Will anti-spyware, etc. slow down comp? Best way to optimize comp?

Well dude.. i would just go with ad aware.. it wont really slow the comp down

somthing activly scanning such as norton avast etc.. will slow your comp down by taking resources... just go with a scanner like adaware that doesnt use resources..

EDIT: Norton sucks... seriously

Answer:Newbie questions. Will anti-spyware, etc. slow down comp? Best way to optimize comp?

As a rule, you use:
1 firewall
1 antivirus
* Norton is not the best program around, and it's a resource hog, but since you bought it, you'll have to live with it until it expires.
* Using more then one of each is asking for problems (conflict).
As for antispyware programs, you can have as many, as you want, however, I wouldn't use more then 2 as startups, since you want fast computer.
Your computer specs look very good, but the lower number of startups, the better (this is another thing to check).
As for antispyware, I'd keep Spyware Blaster as a startup program, and I'd add a-squared: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
You may want to run others, you have once in a while, or when any problem arises.

In addition, you want to keep your computer clean of garbage, and for that purpose, you want to get CCleaner: www.ccleaner.com

Once a month, you want to run defrag. I recommend free jkDefrag: http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/ instead of Windows defrag.

That's about it. If you have more questions, please, ask.

I'm running XP Pro with 512MB memory, but all seems to have slowed to a crawl. I'm also running AdAware, SpyBot and MS anti-Virus programmes as well as AVG Virus scan--I've been told that having a number of these programmes loaded isn't a problem as long as I don't run them simultaneously, but could that be my problem.

I'd be grateful if one of the experts on forum could have a look at the log below and let me know if there's an answer within.

Many thanks

sorry, if this not the right place please move. I did many google searches cant seem to find the issue Im having, or maybe lack of the right key searches. You guys are my last hope.
I will try to explain my problem as clearly as I can. And so sorry about my bad grammar and spelling, trying to post this asap.

first off give small history of my PC. I bought my PC new Sept 2001. A HP Pavilion with 1.3 ghz, 256ram, and a 55gig hard-drive originally came with WinMe, since then I upgraded to XP. I kept my PC case clean, didn't try to install programs my PC couldn't handle, didn't go to any sites that knew were bad with viruses and such also had Malwareytes/spybot/avast/hijackthis to use, didnt install any toolbars, and tried not to have many programs open at the same time. I basically kept my PC simple with use.

Anyways around June I noticed some odd slowdowns
While playing Winamp and running a torrent with speeds of more than 400+ the audio would become choppy. This also happen when I would open FF, IE or any program while running Winamp, the audio would be choppy.

Extracting 700mb files from Winrar would take around 8mins

Playing Youtube, WMP, of VLC videos would be slow and choppy.

Transferring files from one PC to another over a crossover cable would take much longer. 4gigs of files would take about 20mins or so.

Virus scanners, Avast, Malwarebytes, and Spybot would also take much longer than usual.

So, about 2 weeks ago while my brother was on Youtube my... Read more

Thanks guys, I haven't done this in awhile so please bear with me...

After an older system of mine seemed to suddenly slow down and a current Symantec scan came up with nothing I ran Housecall on my system. Housecall found Adware_aeropopups and Adware_memwatcher before Housecall itself slowed down to nothing and died. I could not use Housecall to clean the malware/spyware cookies. I ran the Java Housecall plug-in; not the ActiveX. I then ran defrag and that helped some for the system so it seemed. However, the internet is stll quite slow on many occasions.

I ran Hijackthis and have pasted the log below along with a few system details. I only see GoogleDesktop in the log below as a potential problem. Please help! Everything else seems normal to my untrained eye. I will try adaware next if it is still free to use.

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP3 and IE 7.0.5730.11
I run Symantec Norton AV and have installed Avast in an effort to access another AV library. I know they will conflict from time to time and will remove one of them later.

Answer:Not Again! Slow PC, Slow Start Up, Slow Outside of Internet

Hello justanotherguy,

You continue to get reinfected because you are still running unpatched XP.

IMPORTANT!:
Before we can proceed any further, please visit the Microsoft's Windows Update Page and install ALL Critical Updates for your system (except service pack 2 (SP2). SP2 should only be installed on a fully disinfected system.) At the minimum install at least SP1a for both XP and IE6. Without these updates your system is wide open to re-infection and we are both wasting our efforts to clean your system. After we have completed your clean-up, we will have you return to the Windows Update page and install SP2. We will also then advise you on how to better protect yourself online.

Please apply those updates BEFORE posting your next log. It is this forum's policy to stop the disinfection process until these basic updates are done. If during the updating process you get a message that your product key is invalid ....then you may not have a legitimate copy of Windows XP. Unfortunately it?s also this forums policy that we only address users with a legal copy of Windows XP.... therefore if you can not update Windows XP to SP1 we must stop the cleansing process here.

**Note** If you're having trouble locating the service pack SP1a here is a direct link to download it from.

Hi The computer  that is slow is a desk top tower. In a home.  it is a E machine.
it has windows 7  professional  with service pack 1
DO KNOW :  I am very new to windows 7 and all it's features.
When I brought this computer home  last Nov. it was lightening fast at everything! so much better than  the windows XP  it replaced, I was thrilled.  yet Now starting in  April 2015  it is as slow  or slower  as my old Windows with XP ever was  ( and partially the reason for saving my  pennies to get this windows 7 computer)...and  now I'm upset. feeling  like I have been taken.

Computer displays the following :
3.8 windows experience index
Intel pentium dual 2.0Ghz  processor
64 Bit

Has Ccleaner installed
has Comodo antivirus and Comodo cleaning essentials installed.
All virus scans  find no infections,  and report that all is well and protected.  ( B/C of the way the computer is operating i'm doubting that and betting there is an infections of some sort)

I Have run Comodo cleaning essentials and  results find no abnormalities or infections.
Have run TFC and JRT  and the computer shows no signs of improvement.
have run rKill  and it  finds  no abnormalities  or infections.
All virus scan results  find no infections.
Windows updates is activated  and  all latest updates have been installed.... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 computer suddenly slow to get on internet, slow to browse websites etc

Hi flywelder Maybe we aren't looking at an infection here. There's tons of reasons why a system can slow down, and not all of them are malware related. Let's try to take a look at this issue under another angle shall we?MiniToolBoxDownload MiniToolBox and move the executable file to your Desktop;Execute MiniToolBox and check the following options:List Installed Programs;List Last 10 Event Viewer Errors;List Devices - Only Problems;List Users, Partitions and Memory size;Once this is done, click on Go and wait for the scan to complete;Once the scan is complete, a log will open. Please copy/paste the content of the output log in your next reply;

My system has been very slow for the last 24 hours. Startup was slow. Programs not loading. Even the google home page wasn't loading properly.

I restarted my router and the issues seem to be better but I think there is still a malware issue in the background somewhere.

Please help!

Hello, I have a Dell 5558 Inspiron.  the internet is very slow to load.  My wife has a macbook pro that runs circles around my PC for web browsing.  I have tried various tricks to minimize startup functions and background apps.  is this a hardware issue that can be upgraded?  would upgrading the GPU, upgrading to SSD, or adding more RAM help?

Answer:slow internet loading, slow youtube response: Dell 5558

also, this unit has an intel AC-3160 wifi card.  can this be upgraded or adjusted to work better?

Hello Techspot!!!!

I have had my laptop for nearly 3 years but I wouldn't deem it to be a poor performance laptop. Recently I have been getting slow internet, poor keyboard response and slow scrolling, and it is very frustrating!!! I share the BT 3 homehub with good connection speed which was checked and found fine! My housemates laptop has started having the same problem as mine and I really want to fix this issue. The internet, keyboard and scrolling speeds vary everyday but overall are slow performers. I have looked through some of the threads and have seen people posting long threads of code etc :/ Is there anyone out there who has the time and patience to help me fix this problem? It would be most appreciated!!!

Many Thanks

Dan

Answer:Slow internet, poor keyboard response and slow scrolling problems

make/model of all PCs
of the internet modem
and any extra router attached.
Is this a rather new ISP for you and/or are the PCs newish or older ones?

Did you every have good response? HOW long ago?

Answer:Slow Start, Slow When Opening Boxes, Can I Reinstall Xp Without Having To Reintall My Internet

Before taking the major step of reinstalling your OS, try two things first:1. Delete and then re-install MSN Messenger (that will fix your corrupt file)2. Review the Slow Computer Troubleshooting Checklist that can be found here:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/44690/slow-computer/Regards,John
