I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

amd athlon 64 3200+ Venice 1GHz HT 512KB L2 cache Socket 939

ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe socket 939 (of course) Nvidia nForce4

any thoughts?

Answer:need opinion please...

the processor looks really decent, and 1 Ghz FSB is pretty good

The mobo looks good, but do not use onboard graphics if you are into gaming.

Ok guys, I'm pretty sure it's just a bad hard drive however the machine is not that old. I have this girls laptop I am looking at, an Acer Aspire 5520 that kept blue screening with a unmountable_boot_volume error. I tried to reformat the HDD and it would fail. The HDD is not showing up in the bios anymore. I know the only thing to do at this point is replace the HDD and see if that fixes it but is it possible this caused by something else. I have removed and reinstalled the drive a few times to see if it was just a bad connection but no dice. Just hate to tell the girl who owns it to buy a new drive and that not be the issue. I have no other SATA laptop drive to test the controller out with. How likely is it that a BIOS virus could cause this. My thinking is that it's pretty unlikely that is the issue. Thanks.

Answer:I need a second opinion

how old is the machine ?
Is it still under warranty - some companies in UK give a 2 year warranty on some items , like JohnLewis did on my Laptop

is it the UK/EU - theres a lot of discussion just recently on 2years EU warranty on electrical equiment and 6 years in UK

Question: opinion pls

I have a 5 yr old desktop hp with an athlon 64 3800 2.39ghz cpu running xp. It has 1 gig of memory. It runs slow, and really bogs down when writing disks or using a movie maker program. What's the best thing to do, upgrade processor, add memory or buy new. Don't really want to spend a bundle. If buy new, please suggest the most appropriate chip to do the above tasks. I am not a gamer or multitasker. Like this machine I too am a dinosoar.

Any help will be appreciated

Hey guys, im back agian after you were such a mssive help last time. I've been had again by the dark side and need advice on what to do. I downloaded a torrent yesterday which contained an .exe file. I wasn;t too know it has been altered by someone else and bundled with a trojan, and I scan;d the file with AVG before opening and it found nothing. I tried to run it and it did not start leaving me to think something was odd, sure enough that was it and it infected my computer. I have since deleted the file and run AVG, kaspersy and spybot scans. The AVG found nothing AGAIN and the spybot found the usual harmless but annoying junk. The kaspersy found 6 infected files all of which I deleted using the programme, quite shocked that AVG let this one slip as they are usually pretty good. I should of taken the names of the files down but it read something along the lines of trojan32.bcw I should of made a note of it, but at the time I jsut wanted rid of it, so that was a bad move in hindsight.Tonight my computer has error'd out about 5 times causing the blue screen to pop up and forcing a restart.I have noticed that in my startup there was something I have never seen before and it reads...dumprep 0 -k %systemroot%\system32\deumprep 0 -kI have done a hijack analysis and its as follows Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1Scan saved at 23:08:52, on 24/04/2007Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16414)Running processes:C:\WINDOWS\... Could you please share your opinion on if this HD is good?

I can't tell if the internal drive is SATA or not with a regular SATA interface. WD has been using weird connectors recently in these things, and if this drive is one of those thats a deal breaker for me.

Question: Opinion?

Ok, here's the questions guys. A USB cd rom drive or a PCMCIA cd rom drive. The laptops that i fix don't have any cd rom drives. And I need to boot from a cd. Which one do i need to access all the laptops, USB or PCMCIA?

Personally, I didn't know it was possible to boot from a USB device, at least not on all laptops. I would check that out first.

If you can, you'd have to base your decision on how fast you can get a PCMCIA card. USB 2.0 runs at 480mb/s. The more money you pump into a PCMCIA card (assuming you have a slot that can handle the same speeds) you can get a very fast PCMCIA card, which can potentially be faster than the USB connection.

If you have one of those external laptop CD-ROM drives, just use that.

I hope you don't have a lot of these laptops...or yer gonna be hurt'n. If that's the case, I'd be more inclined to buy a laptop HDD imager than fool around individually.

Question: 2nd opinion?

The very fine folks in the malwarebytes forum are telling my my other laptop has been infected with a backdoor type infection and that though the computer can be cleaned, I really should just wipe the hard drive and start over. That and I should call all my credit cards/bank and tell them I've potentially had my identity stolen (which I'm assuming they'll respond to by issuing new cards, new accounts, etc etc). Now, I respect their advice, but given this is a pretty huge amount of hassle I was thinking maybe a second opinion would be in order.
malwarebytes found svchost.exe, and TDSSkiller found rootkit.boot.pihar.c. I have the mbam log and dds text files if that would be of interest.

Answer:2nd opinion?

Malware removal helpers at other forum didnot say that your identity has been stolen. They are warning that the infection is a backdoor variant and steals passwords. This is general warning given to users who get infected by backdoor infections.I would request you to change your online banking credentials. If someone is helping you at other forum please stick with them.We do not provide help to users who are already being assisted somewhere else.Different fixes from different helpers simulaneously would screw your system.
If you really need help please close the topic in other forum and post here.

Question: Your Opinion

Recently I fried my motherboard on my previous computer and now need a new one. I am looking around in the range of $700-800 for a gaming computer.

Whats your opinion on this one?

What are the possibilities of overclocking the processor and whats your estimate on how high with the setup?

Answer:Your Opinion

You'll get decent overclocking speed on that one, however, if you go a step down to the 5000+ BLACK (instead of the 6000+), you'll be able to overclock it from 2.5 (or 2.6, I don't remember exactly) to around 3.3 or 3.4 GHz. The AMD Dual Cores with the lable "Black" are built intentionally for overclocking. The problem with buying these processors is that they don't come with a fan or heat sink (because AMD knows that their stock fans won't be enough for it) so you'll have to purchase a separate fan or heat sink (and a pretty good one, too). If money's not a huge issue, they have a faster processor than the 5000 (I THINK it's the 9000+) in black. Plan on spending about $60-$70 on a sufficient fan, but if you're looking to overclock an AMD, the Black models are the way to go.

Hey guys -- I'm running Win 7 64x and did my 3rd clean install after having alot of trouble before. I made the idiotic mistake of connecting to the internet to download updates in an Admin account, thinking that I was okay for those few minutes behind both NAT router firewall & software firewall. After that things got worse and worse -- Prevx stopped updating (logs say Prevx stopped unexpectedly -- "the pipe has ended." Avira won't update, and after a while of looking at this site for help all of a sudden I could not reach Bleep's site. I'm using about every protection I've learned here -- update several times daily using Secunia, router is hard-wire config only, no remote access, printer/file sharing off, Netbios over Tcip disabled, using Open DNS, long randomized passwords on everything, NoScript, Adblock, HOSTs, etc. I noticed as soon as I connected my Print Spooler started running and I logged a "router error" about 2 min after connecting -- I know there was a vulnerability there that was patched after this incident. More to the point, I have an unidentified device and have collected all the characteristics of it as follows in the hopes someone could help me with a professional opinion; the device hardware profile reads as follows:

The 2005 version of this driver is a known BSOD cause.
Please visit this link: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download P7P55D LE
Scroll down to the Utilities category, then scroll down to the "ATK0110 driver for WindowsXP/Vista/Windows 7 32&64-bit " (it's about the 8th item down).
Download and install it.
Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers to check and make sure that the ASACPI.sys file is date stamped from 2009 or 2010 (NOT 2005).

8GB 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM
2TB Hard Drive Storage Space
NvidIa GeForce GTX 560 Graphics Card
High Performance Motherboard
Stylish Tower Case & 500W PSU
I have a few concerns about this PC package. I know for a fact that the CPU/RAM is sufficient, and the HDD seems sufficient too.
However I have doubts about the GPU/PSU.
The PSU is 500w, and the minimum requirements for the GTX 560 is 450w, could that cause an issue being so close to the minimum requirement?
Also, I wanted to get the GTX 560ti, but it seems computers with this GPU are a lot more expensive. Will I be missing out on much? Is the GTX 560 still a very good GPU? I'm currently using an NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT, so I know it will still be a huge upgrade in comparison. I intend to play games such as ARMA 2 on high settings with this new PC, due to my current PC running them on the lowest settings at 30fps.
This graph ( ) on the NVIDIA website shows little difference between the 560 and the 560ti, will I be safe using the 560 for a good few years without upgrading? I intend to run games on medium-high settings at 60fps.
Opinions on this PC?

Answer:Opinion on this PC ?

Whereas with a quality PSU 500W would be enough for this PC but as I suspect the PSU will be of a lesser quality then I have my doubts.
As you quite rightly say there is very little difference between the 560 and the 560Ti so I think that your GPU will fit your needs.
The PSU is another matter,I would get in touch with the seller and ask him what make/model it is.

Which of these PC's are a better choice in your opinion (it includes price and everything that shapes your opinion)?
Add $80 to the first PC on the list (the ebay one) because of the cost of the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
Also, the first ebay PC comes without an OS.
The dell comp comes with an Intel Media Accelerator 900.

Answer:Need a second opinion!!!

We are not allwed to go into detail on HiJack logs but I can say,

Go to the control panel and uninstall the all tool bars that are not required.

Go to start|run and type msconfig<enter>
go to the startup tab and uncheck all of the programs that are not required for the computer to start.

Many programs think that they need to be running all of the time and consume a massive amount of memory.
Turning them off will speed up the computer in a big way.

I just ordered a Gigabyte GA-K8U-939 Mobo. I know some of you dont like Gigabyte, but I have never had bad experiences with them. What I am wondering is that I have never dealt with a ULI Chipset. The reviews that I read for this board were mostly positive. Say about a 85% positve rating. I have noticed a few DOA reports but the majority of the reviews I read were as I said positive.

So has anyone had any experience either with htis particular board or ULI Chipsets in general. No I dont mind that it is an AGP board. I do not game other than like Pogo. This is just going to help keep me sort of up to date with 64bit processors. I will probably pair it up with a 3200+ Venice core for now.

For some reason, like my 7 month old internal hard drive went up in smoke, it was a seagate, I am seriously considering buying an external HD. Been looking but can't seem to pin down a brand. Leaning toward Western Digital. I could use a bit of help opinion or two.

Doesn't need to be lightening quick. I will use it initially for B/U of my OS and data. However, I am thinking of partitioning and adding Linux just for gags and giggles. Whether I partition the new external or the internal on this machine I haven't decided.

My existing internal is 250 Gig. Should I match the external w/ the same capacity? I doubt I would ever use some 500- Gigs but the price break seems to warrant getting the extra.

Answer:I just need an opinion!!!

My opinion is that if you think it is stolen, it most likely is...You need to call the police department in your city immediately before you get tied to the theft. Tell them you think it is stolen and inform them where your purchased it and who sold it to you. You will lose what you paid for it, but might avoid being charged for possession of stolen property if you turn it in.

DO IT NOW, because you are in possession of stolen property if it was stolen. Being in possession of stolen property is a CRIME.

That is my advice to you.

Pc has been working fine for months all of a sudden it is rebooting itself some times before reaching post other times after 5-10 minutes or so.Leaning towards psu on its way out but would anything else cause this? before i lay out cash for a new one .Have checked all fans working and clean and temps are all ok .

Answer:Asking for a 2nd opinion, PSU on it's way out ?

When on the desktop does it just go black then reboots? Does it boot up from a cold start, ie first thing of the day? No blue screens?
Just have monitor and mouse connected so you can log in, to see if it lasts longer.
When my PSU was going awry it took a long time. Sudden black screen and rebooting. Sometimes with a Windows popup that Windows hadn't shut down properly.
Check all connections are sound in the desktop first. Mobo sata, drive sata, power connections etc.

Question: Need an opinion!!

I'm about to buy a new PC, but I'd like your opinion on the motherboard and the RAM I've selected.

Motherboard: P5KC from asus ( Their server appears to be down a lot so I'll write the basic characteristics:

Combo Memory with Native DDR3 1333 support!
- Support Intel® next generation 45nm Multi-core CPU
- Intel LGA775 Platform
- Intel® P35 chipset
- Dual-channel DDR2 1066/800/667 MHz or DDR3 1333/1066/800
- Stack Cool 2
- Heat Pipe
- 2x1394
- 12xUSB 2.0
- All High-quality Conductive Polymer Capacitors

This motherboard supports DDR3 which is the RAM I'm planning on buying but it says "native" DDR3 support, is this anything I should note (it appears to be in contrast with the dual-channel support)? Also it feels like this motherboard barely supports DDR3 because it only has 2 slots for DDR3 (compared to 4 for DDR2) and it's the *only* board that will offer DDR3 support for such a low price. Do you think it would be a good idea to use this with DDR3 RAM DIMMs?

RAM: I'm considering 2 kits:
1) Mushkin 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 at 800MHz 4-4-4-12, and
2) Asus 2GB (2x1GB) DDR3 at 1333 MHz 8-8-8-24

The CPU I'm planning on using those with is the intel quad core Q6600 with 1066 FSB (which I'm planning on overclocking to 1333 if I use the 2nd RAM kit). Which kit would you suggest? Do I really need 4GB for a mid-gaming home de... Read more

Question: Second Opinion

A friend of mine asked me to take a look at his machine that was recently infected with some nonsense. I've never used this machine before, but it seems sluggish: AMD Phenom 8400 w/4GB of RAM running Windows Vista (C drive) and AVG Internet Security 2012. The machine was missing either SP1, SP2 or both when I got to it so after cleaning as much as I could I patched it up.What strikes me as really odd is that svchost.exe regularly consumes several hundred MB of RAM, going as high as nearly 1GB even when I'm not doing anything. Explorer also uses between 30% and 40% CPU when 'idle'; again when sitting around without me doing anything. My thinking was that I would start here to make sure 'something else' wasn't to blame before moving onto this. I figured I could greatly benefit from the expertise of the community, especially those who volunteer their time to review the logs and 'personalize' the support. So here's some potentially useful information...DDS Log (attached)DDS Attach Log (available upon request)Disabled CD EmulationGMER Log (zipped & attached)aswMBR Log (attached)Ran MBRCheck but not seeing a log (??)TDSSKiller Log (attached as report.txt)Very much open to guidance on next steps.Re: MBRCheck - This is what it says when I run it, but I'm not seeing a log. Hi hope you guys can help me out.

My family PC started I'm my moms words acting weird the other day weird being it was opening new tabs seemingly at random often these were blank though on occasion they would be for what looked to be one of the international google sites. I ran AVG which found nothing followed by malwarebytes which found a few things and removed them and ran spybot as well just to be sure and it found nothing.

But tabs were still being opened at random though not with the frequency they had been. Talked to one of the PC guys at my work and they gave me a copy of combo fix on CD with some instructions on how to run it, wished i had been here first to see that it was a last resort.

However i wasn't and it ran without any bother and the PC is not a door stop also the random tabs have stopped.

So looks like its now clean but i would appreciate it if some one could look over my logs just to make sure there's not something nasty lurking and waiting to strike.

I should mention to get gmer to run i had to uninstal AVG but i've now reinstalled it.

Answer:Think my PC may have had something and after a second opinion

Hello TaintedMess,

Talked to one of the PC guys at my work and they gave me a copy of combo fix on CD with some instructions on how to run it, wished i had been here first to see that it was a last resort.

Please point the fellas at work to this post and have them read ....

While you may see ComboFix being used quite often, the tool should not be run unsupervised (as stated in the Disclaimer that is first displayed by ComboFix when you run the tool) Going forward, I highly recommend you heed such instructions. As explained in Post 2 of our pre-posting topic...

Why we don't ask you to run ComboFix from the onset

As stated by the author of ComboFix:

ComboFix is a very powerful tool which when improperly used may render your machine to a doorstop.

We first need to verify if there's any rootkits present and how they could affect our tools. DDS & GMER are preliminary scans. We use their logs to map our strategy for attack.

With these logs we can determine the infections present & decide whether to deploy ComboFix.

That being said, the ComboFix.txt contains important information for me. Kindly post the contents of the C:\ComboFix.txt

Hi there guys!

Okay it all started when my pc started lagging on windows startup and when running programs. I thought that my RAM was failing so i downloaded WinDiag Memory tester (This memory tester works as a boot cd). I have 2 512Mb chips in my pc so i ran the test on each chip seperately and everytime i ran the test it would hang, i thought this was wierd so i downloaded another memory tester and the same thing happened on both chips. I then took the 2 512MB chips and installed them into another Pc and Ran the tests and they passed on many passes with both programs. I then thought that maybe the CPU is overheating and cleaned all the dust out with a high powered blower, installed the chips and ran the tests again on my pc, they didnt freeze up this time but Failed the "LDAPT" test on every pass, now what i want to know is, is it a problem with my motherboard \ CPU or Maybe i need to flash the bios or something an if so how? I have a VIA PM800 Motherboard with an Intel Pentium 4 3.0Ghz CPU. If you guys could let me know what these symptoms usually mean a failure of ,it would be much appreciated! Thanks guys!!!

I am currently running a athlon64 3700+. I would like to upgrade to a fx5700+. I am also looking at a 64x2 chip which is a little less. My mobo is suppose to support this. I have a gigabyte k8nsc mobo with the newest bios. I am thinking a dual core on one chip would be faster than a fx5700. What's your opinions about this?

Answer:would like your opinion.

I think you mean an fx-57. The fx5700 is a graphics card.
I think it depends on what you want to use the processors for.. If you want to multitask, and run a lot of programs at once, then the dual core X2 will be faster.
if you're a hard-core gamer, then you won't mind spending the extra cash on the fx-57. fx-57 is better than X2 for gaming.

I need to setup a network backup system and I'm looking for opinions on Windows Home Server vs. a NAS System.

The NAS I'm looking at is the Linksys NSLU2.
If you have another NAS recommendation for a solution, (total price with drives included under $500) I'm open to suggestions.

I am a early intermediate user so please try to simplify advanced technical jargon.

The most important need (besides the obvious "backup") is this:
I have several computers around the house. I want to have one set of folders on the network drive. I would access the files from each computer, work on them on one of the computers, then save back to the network.
I don't want to keep files on the computers themselves.
I will then backup the network folders to a second drive so they're safe in the event that the main drive fails.

-I know I can remotely access files with either option so this is not an issue.
-Streaming is not important.
-I may image a few (not all) of the drives. The largest drive I would image is 120GB.

If you need any more info, just let me know.
Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Your Opinion: WHS or NAS?

Entry Level NAS issue is a Murky one.

You are asking which one is the Best, while these devices are actually competing on which one is the worse.

Price is starting at about $100 and you have to add a Hard Drive.

None of them really support NTFS in full, and they are very slow (the inexpensive one are rated 100Mb/sec. but really provide a rate that is similar to old 10M/sec. Network card.

To get a more decent unit you have to escalate the price to few hundred $$$.

On the other hand if you have, or can get, or build yourself, an humble computer that is about the level of P-III-1GHz, and add to it Windows Home server OS.

You might spend about the same and get a better NAS with many features that are Not in existence in any of the Entry Level stand alone NAS'.

So Best? No best, just few variables that would help you to think and hopefully reach to a conclusion that suits you.

Windows Home Server can do a lot more than simple NAS.

If you have few Drives, (any kind any size can be mixed) it automatically make them appear as one cohesivedrive called WHS.

It can do auto mirroring and back up too.

That looks okay but I would personally avoid AsRock motherboards and get one from Gigabyte or ASUS which are much better brands. As far as that power supply goes, I wouldn't even think about that one!  The R9 290 will need at least 650w, probably  750w to be on the safe side, but this is talking about a QUALITY power supply, the one you linked looks like a very cheap off brand and I can't really find any information about it.  Stick to getting a power supply from a reputable brand like Corsair, XFX, Seasonic, EVGA, SuperFlower, Antec.etc

Hey guys! My brother lately appears to be having issues with his little Toshiba Laptop. Is a 12inch Toshiba L645D in blue that has a little AMD Athlon P340, 4Gb DDR3 RAM, 500GB mementus hard drive and running windows 10 home (upgraded from 7 home 64bit). This isnt no rocket computer, but for a high school teen to carry with him, perfect. Anyways the last few days he's been complaining to me about freezes in windows. No BSOD and not even anything intensive. PLaying a video he made on a mac in VLC and even just browsing the net. What will happen is the mouse will freeze and nothing will move. Since ive looked at it, its frozen countless times sometimes right away, other times its taken some time. A few times it went to sleep and wouldnt come out, or it would but only show the cursor and then nothing. So far ive run a check disk going into my computer>right click the hard drive>properties>tools>check now and it came out fine. Im currently running Memtest 5 and it already passed one session. I did think that perhaps its over heating... I blew out the exhaust and than managed to get HWmonitor running and found it ran around 50 degrees C on idle. However now that im looking at it running mem test its at 64 degrees Celcius.. Im not 100% sure if its the hard drive, the RAM or something in the system that has corrupted itself..Or its overheating.. Any feedback would be appreciated. And as always it is well appreciated. Thanks

Answer:Need a second Opinion

I've seen this symptom about a dozen times. In every single instance, it was the Hard Disk.running a chkdsk /r to completion should confirm that. Replacing the HDD Is the best option if that is the case, though the chkdsk /r could give it a short second wind.

Question: Need opinion

A friend has a computer that starts Windows XP and goes to the desktop OK but does not go any farther. None of the icons are on the screen and neither is the "Start" button etc. or the task bar on the bottom of the screen. When I shut it down, it goes through the normal Windows shutdown. It says "Windows shutting down" etc.

It is a Pentium 3, 900 mhz computer (Gateway) that is 5-6 years old. She had a new hard drive installed last year.

When I start it in Safe Mode, it eventually starts up and goes to a screen with nothing on it but the standard Safe mode wording on the top but nothing else. No way to look at files or do anything.

I am going to boot to a BartPE disk in a few minutes but I suspect that the problem is a Windows XP installation that has been corrupted somehow. If so, I will try to repair it with my WinXP disk but will use her registration number.

Does this sound like a corrupted Windows Installation to you?

Question: Your Opinion

Well I have finally come up with the cash to build a machine. I was looking at AMD for the processor but may consider INTEL, especially after seeing a little video on Tom's Hardware site. If your fan goes out AMD don't last too long. I'm not a gamer. I want a machine basically to do a little programming, some stuff with web developement, Internet, email, maybe some audio stuff. I know there are some good motherboards out there with on board sound thats not too bad and pretty good video. I would like to build the system with a budget of $1000 to $1200. If needed I could come up with maybe $200 to $300 more but really don't want too. I have been looking at one hardware website that has what looks like some pretty good deals on 19 inch LCD, I don't know if I want to go that way or maybe a 21inch CRT. I just don't want to buy a bunch of lowend crap. Let me know what your thoughts are as far as hardware.

Try the games out, you may have to run them with lower detail but they should all run.

Answer:opinion,please: HJT or OTL

The two tools differ in that OTL contains alot more information. You cannot say which is better.

OTL by OldTimer is like HijackThis ? on steroids. OTL scans your system for malware, and produces detailed logs. It?s primarily a malware diagnostic tool, but has advanced removal abilities. It is used alone, or with other tools to remove malware completely.
OTL is a flexible, multipurpose, diagnostic, and malware removal tool. It also has some curative ability.

Question: another opinion...

Hey Everyone
I'm new to this and i'm sure I'll probably break all the rules but I'll give'er a go anyways. I know that there is something wrong with my computer.
I opened an attatchment on MSN and now my homepage has been redirected to, and now I my updates on Norton will not work. I download spybot search and destroy and it did find a couple files that it removed, but when I ran it again the next day the same files came up as threats again. My Norton says everthing is ok but i don't believe it either. Also my C-drive is full of all this Krap that I have no idea where it came from.
I've tried using the following to catch this:
Norton (obviously)
Spybot search and destroy
Spyware doctor
Some smartkiller thing but It won't load and
Hijack this
Can anyone else give me some advice on what to do before I have to take it in somewhere to be cleaned up?

Answer:another opinion...

Re: another opinion...more info please help

I don't know if this will help anyone out but I just ran spybot search and destroy 3 times and each time I keep getting the below come up,and then it fixes them and they just come right back up on the next scan:

I've also run a suggestion that came off another forum to:
Firstly you need to enable viewing of hidden files as follows:
1) Go to My Computer, and click on the "Tools" menu
2) Click "Folder options"
3) Select the "View" tab
4) Make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected
5) Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
6) Make sure "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" is unchecked

You can/should change this back when you are all clean (in case I fail to mention it again)

Either navigate to; or search and find the HOSTS file located here --->>C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS. Right click and rename it HOSTS.old for now.

Get on-line and go HERE and read the page; then download and run stinger. When it is done, click on file (in stinger) and choose save report to file.

Reboot; then download Hoster from here: HOSTER

Hi,I posted this on another (inferior!) site, but no one would give me an answer specific to the PDA I am actually asking about.Hopefully someone here can give me an answer regarding my Compaq IPAQ 3970 - I am sure the answer must be in the technical data somewhere, but I cannot find it. Even if I did it might as well be in Chinese!!Thanks in advance!I have an old Compaq Ipaq 3970 which I allowed to discharge and lost all the data.I sent it to a Data Recovery Company to see if any recovery was possible, they came back and said it was not possible:'This device uses ram flash memory therefore as soon as the power is lost all data is lost and does not exist to be recovered'Conclusion: No recovery possibleHowever my IT guy in the Office said that apparently the Conclusion is a contradiction RAM would normally lose data when it loses power & Flash Memory would keep at least something.I have no idea who is correct, so I thought I would try a second opinion from you guys!!If my guy is correct should I get a second recovery firm to take a look or is there no hope? Thanks again!

Answer:2nd Opinion on an old PDA

I think your I/T person is closer to being correct!  RAM is generally temporary memory.  Flash memory will generally "hold" but I'm hedging -- I suspect, given a long enough time frame, that even flash memory will degrade.  I also imagine sometimes errors and things happen, too.

I experienced a huge computer crash (total reinstall) over the weekend, you may have read my thread in the WinXP Forum. So far I on board I have reinstalled AVG Free,ZoneAlarm Firewall,Ewido & Ad-Aware.Didn't have an installer backup for Spybot, and was actually contemplating switching to Spywareblaster instead.I've seen people with both, but wonder if its redundant having Spybot and Spywareblaster. On the other hand, you can never be too safe! Appreciate your input. Not feeling very secure about making these decisions at the moment, has been one **** of a weekend. ~hangs head~

Answer:Your Opinion Please?

SpywareBlaster and Spybot are complementary. In fact, I installed SpywareBlaster at the suggestion of Spybot. SpywareBlaster is excellent in preventing malicious activeX and bad tracking cookies from getting on your computer in the first place. Unlike Spybot, it cannot be used to scan. You can read more about SpywareBlaster, how it works and what it does hereAnd about Spybot hereOrange Blossom

i am a bit new here on the site...

I was wondering... what most of you people use to protect yourselves on the net.. from viruses, worms and so on..

I Use Kaspersky 6.0 and thats about it... something is telling that might not be enough??

What do the majority of the people on the site use.. and whats best?!?

Thanx in advance

Answer:What's Your Opinion?!

In addition to a resident anti-virus application (Kaspersky) that is kept up-to-date, having a software firewall is essential. In addition to those two layers of defences, you should have at least two anti-spyware applications installed and kept updated. Many good anti-spyware applications are completely free: Spybot, Ad-AwareSE and AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 are more than adequate. Naturally, you must keep MS's endless series of security patches current.
Understanding secure browser and E-mail client settings, and exercising the greatest care about what sites you visit and what files you download is perhaps the best layer of protection you can provide your computer. Many of the excellent BC Tutorials will provide good knowledge of computer best security practives.

Ok, simple question I was wondering, am I protected enough?

I used to have McAffee and apparently it wasn't spyware/viruses that was slowing my comp down, it was my McAffee service!

So I got these 2 programs to replace them (from someone here that told me to):

Comodo Firewall
AVG Antivirus

So here's my question, is it ok to just keep those two? Or do I need other programs...? I also regularly scan my computer with spybot search and destroy, and clean my registry with a registry cleaner.

Also...I have Adaware installed on my comp. Is it all right to delete that because I don't need it?

Opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Need A Second Opinion

I would keep your programs. Spybot & AdAware, along with AVG & Comodo will keep your PC secure.

Answer:win xp sp2?? opinion

I'd recommend it. Download the SP2 update. Update any programs you can. Scan your computer for spyware and viruses first, then shut down all unnecessary programs (usually the ones in the system tray), especially the antivirus and firewall (disconnect from the internet before you do by unplugging the connection). Then install it.

HP Pavilion dv6:

Dell Inspiron 15r:

Thanks for all your opinions and suggestions.

Answer:Opinion Please

The HP has a quad core processor and dedicated graphics hardware.
Probably better if you plan on doing any gaming on the system
The dell has a dual core processor and integrated graphics hardware.
Good for standard desktop applications and probably videos, but
not really setup for gaming.
The dedicated graphics hardware on the HP would also help with
hardware acceleration on videos and movies.

I think the HP is better overall.

I currently have the comcast triple play package but am fed up with the service (or lack-there-of). My internet connection goes out just about every day for several minutes. Sometimes multiple times a day. Comcast doesn't know why this is happening or what they can do to fix it, and it seems like they are not making any effort to resolve this problem.

Here's my question:

I want to change my internet service from Comcast to a different company. Right now I'm looking at RoadRunner , Cox, and possibly Verizon. What is your opinion on these companies? What's your opinion on a company that I didn't mention?

My household usually has 2-4 machines on the internet at any given time. We use the internet for online gaming, live-streaming videos, research, and uploading and watching YouTube videos. So I need an internet that can do all of this and still be fast.

Thanks for reading. Please help me out.

Answer:Your opinion on these ISP?

I haven't heard good things about any of those companies, with Verizon being the exception (haven't heard anything, good or bad).

I have AT&T DSL right now, and I've only lost my internet net once. Pricing is decent depending on the speed you want (6 MB/s is the fastest you can get)

Charter is faster, but costs more.

Satellite internet (Hughesnet, WildBlue, etc.) is also fast (nothing beats cable internet, though), but very expensive (installation, equipment, and monthly rate).

That being said, my place of residence has recently started including satellite internet included in the rent, so I will be cancelling my AT&T very soon.

Question: ISP Opinion Please

After years of AOL, I think I will finally switch to another ISP and would appreciate any opinion you guys may have. Sorry if this is the wrong forum but it appears to be the best one suited for my question.

I still use dial-up and really don't have a need for anything any faster. I only have one phone line so I use the AOL function that allows me to see calls come in then either take a message or log-off to take the call (my new ISP would need this type of function also).

It would be nice to cut down on my AOL cost (25.46/mth for unlimited internet access and including the phone function) -- and be able to get a discount for elderly.

I have been getting Sign-Up CD's from PeoplePC which provides for a AARP discount and they seem to met all of my needs but I am not that sure how good it is. I have only been with AOL, like forever, and would appreciate opinions on ISP's that are better, less costly but reliable.

Help please.

Answer:Second Opinion Please

My thoughts are the mobo. You know it's not the video card, you know it's not the monitor, you know it's not the PSU, it can't be the hard drive... what else could it be? All boards, chips and such have lives, as you oft recommend; likely the mobo. Though if replacing the CMOS battery works (strange things happen with computers) I wouldn't complain.

Question: Opinion

Lookin for a decent laptop for just basic use, internet use, microsoft word, basic stuff like that, nothing too fancy, any quick but not too pricey laptops out. By quick I mean doesn't take a day and a half to start up, shut down, not much lag problems, wont freeze up, not too many problems, you know stuff like that.

All computers have these problems if they're not maintained. Any laptop should serve your purposes, you just have to keep it maintained.

My parents, as i had told, just bought a Toshiba laptop for $899, about 2 months ago...

Well my father wanted a new laptop for photo editing, so he went to Future Shop, and looked for a large-screen powerful laptop. And yes, i steered him into AMD's direction for once . There was an Intel with dual-core, but the battery life was rediculous. 2 HRS total, and this one is 5 hours total.

This was the laptop that was purchased:

HP Pavilion DV8220
AMD Turion 64 ML-37 2.0 Ghz, 1MB cache, 1600 mhz FSB.
512MB RAM -> Doubled to 1GB.
160GB HD (2 80GB, 1 8GB for recovery)
17" Widescreen (its nice)
6-in-1 card reader
Lots of HP crap installed.
Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse

Also had a free printer, after mail-in-rebate. So now i have a printer, pretty awesome! HP Deskjet 5440...

What do you think of the new laptop?

EDIT - Installed Microsoft Digital Image Suite instead. Does same things.

Also, is AMD turion a good processor? I dunno, its you guys must have an opinion on it.

Answer:need opinion...

It seems good to me.

I just bought a DL DVD-RW. I'll have some time this weekend to put it in, but I'm unsure which of my secondary drives to keep. I know that your opionion depends on how I use the drives, but I use them both equally.
Right now I have a CD-RW and a DVD-ROM (on secondary, and 2 hard drives on master). I'm going to replace one of the optical drives with the DVD burner, but I want your opinion on which one.

So, if it was you, would you keep the CD-RW or DVD-ROM in with the new DVD-RW?

Answer:Your Opinion: Keep CD-RW or DVD-ROM?

I have a throbbing migraine, so bear with me. My husband's laptop has been having connectivity issues for months. It started with some "limited or no connectivity issues" that I seemed to fix when I fried the qwest actiontec modem/router with a firmware update and replaced it with a regular qwest actiontec modem, with a Linksys wrt54gs router. Now he does not lose connectivity as often, but he is fluctuating like crazy with his speed (from 11-54Mbps) and that will often cause problems like the page timing out or his connection dropping and reconnecting.

Ok, here are the facts... we both use Toshiba Satellite laptops (his is 6m older & a different model) we have it directly upstairs from the router and they sit maybe 3 feet from each other. We also have an xbox live on wireless. We have two desktops in the basement that are connected by a wire. When we connect his laptop by wire to the router we have no problem, but we do not want a hardwire running from the basement office to the family room, so connecting it by wire is not an option.

So, we are thinking that his wireless card in his laptop is going out, does that seem like the problem to you? Any suggestions on what else we can try to fix it?

Answer:Need second opinion

See if you can find a driver/utility update for the wireless adapter--from the Toshiba site if the adapter is integrated. It sounds to me like an Intel adapter with the wrong driver ('cause that happened to me).

That Toshiba web site won't help your migraine, so you may want to let him do the searching or else wait for a better day.

hi, latley i have been thrown towards getting an ATI card. i am considering going for the current beast which i belive to be the 9800 xt 256mb. but my main concern with ATI is there driver support and relative issues, i understand that ATI have made a great deal of proggress over the last year with there new cards and viewing various benchamarks can see that ati are out performing the nvidia cards in most areas. but like i said my main concern are driver issues. can any one comment on this subject?? ps this will be my first ati card as i have allways built pc's with nvidia cards. :)

Answer:ATI - Your opinion...

every magazine i have read has said the drivers have now been sorted out. I still like nvidia cards. pci express will put the cat among the pigeons when it comes out.

This is my first post in WPC.
Tired of waiting for Windows 8.1 update , so I was thinking to go for devlopers preview.
Will my data (msgs, saved passwords, apps installed, photos, etc) be effected or will they remain as it is ?
But In back of my mind I am worried about my warranty as I own a l525 which is hardly 4-5 monts old.
So should I go for developer preview or should I wait for the offical release ?
What are the risk of losing my warranty if I opt for DP.
Please do suggest.

Answer:NEED a second opinion

Let me do a quick run down for you.
Before upgrading, always backup everything. Settings -> Backup
Save your pictures to a computer or OneDrive.
Next, nothing should be effected during your update but there is always a possibility so that's why I said backup.
Using the DP8.1 shouldn't effect your warranty but if it ever happened that you needed to send it in, you can always flash it back to W8 using the Nokia Software Utility. Keep in mind this will erase everything on the phone.FAQ - FAQ - How can I recover/reset/restore my phone software? - Nokia - UK

Question: Opinion

I know you guys frown at the use of registry cleaners, but I downloaded a limited trial version of RegCleaner last week. As I think I mentioned in an earlier thread, when I ran it, it detected a couple of hundred anomalies in my computer. It would only clean 31 of them, but in doing so it cleared 90% of a problem which had been dogging my computer for a few years, namely an apparent sticking or searching problem, were the hard drive would do nothing for a couple of minutes other than make a rythmic sound. That has now largely disappeared, so I would love to receive some informed opinions as to why that should be, if only to satisfy my curiosity. One thing I have noticed, and this is coming from a totally beginners perspective, is that when I did a scan with Treesize, it detected an awful lot of .DAT files which wouldn't delete. They've now gone. Just a thought.

You should stay as far away as you possibly can from Registry Cleaners, Boosters, Optimizers, TuneUp Utilities... You'll only end up crippling programs and the operating system beyond repair! These programs are completely useless and will delete what they don't understand, like legitimate files still in use.

Keep in mind that they will always find "errors" to fix, even on a fresh Windows installation!

well there was this game on my pc which i was not able to uninstall in any way, somebody suggested Revo uninstaller pro, i did a forced uninstall deleting the registry keys of the game, restarted and some startup entries were missing ans some other items too, so i did a system restore and it was successful.everything was fine . but when i started the computer later I got this message on start up "You have been logged on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off. Please see the event log for details or contact your administrator. "
I was just getting the basic screen with only some programmes loaded, lot of entries did not show in the startup menu also. could not connect to internet too. i shut it down and restarted it and it came back to normal and is running fine , can somebody look at my HJT log and tell if all is fine, would be really grateful, thanks
