Question: XP doesn't save account specific settings/ or overwrites them...

Hello everyone,

I'm using Windows XP SP2 with all the latest patches installed. My computer is a member of a domain.
My problem is that when logging off specific user (domain or local user), the settings are not saved (or maybe are overwritten in a specific moment). When logging on again, the settings are not those that I left. For example: all visual settings, folder options, etc.. It's not very conveniently to change all these things at every logon..
How can I solve this?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

I have installed Business & Office MS 2010. When setting up Outlook 2010, I cannot get Account information to "save" so I can receive and send Emails. What is happening?? How do I correct it??

I've been running windows eight for around nine months now, and today it decided to remove all my apps and customizations on my computer. This normally wouldn't be a problem, as i could just re-install them, however, every time I log off or power down, the apps and any other costomization resets to the default start up screen, and i lose the majority of my desktop icons. I've attempted a system restore and a system refresh with no luck. dose anybody have any insight on this?

Well, i discovered the actual issue. For whatever reason my PC decided to make a second user file from a Microsoft account without telling me. I can still access the old files from C:\users\ (-old account-)\ however, i can still not access the store or any apps i had before this happened.

I'm letf handed and want my laptop to have the mouse buttons, both on the touchpad and external mouse, swapped so that the right button is "right clicl" and the left button is "left click".  I can get it set up to function that way but I can't get it to hold the settings.  If I close the lid for sleep it's hit and miss whether the computer remembers my settings.  If is turned off I'm guaranteed that the settings are lost.  If the settings are lost by one of these actions, I have a really difficult time resetting the buttons to the way I want them, takes about 10 minutes of futzing for resetting the buttons using the control panel "mouse" utiity.  I have a lenovo U410 running Win 8.1.  The external mouse is a Microsoft Bluetooth mouse.  Somebody please help before I throw the machine across the room!!!

I?m sorry to hear that the Touchpad button settings is not working as expected and are reverting back after waking up from sleep or after next restart, I suggest you to remove the external mouse connected to the computer then re-install the touchpad driver by downloading a fresh copy of driver from our Support Website. But while installing the driver right click on the downloaded file and select ?Run as administrator? option to get it installed without any error.

Hello all,  as I wrote in the title. After I set my property in BIOS to : Display-> Graphics Device ->Integrated Graphics (I save it with F10 )I start my Fedora 10 with those settigs. But letter (after I turn off my Lenovo T500) when I go in BIOS there is again the default setting: "Switchable Graphics". What could be the reason ?  Best regards, Marcin

I had the Windows Police Pro virus thing, or whatever exactly it was called, and that lead to many pop-ups and more problems with my laptop. I was running Windows XP SP2 on my 4 year old Gateway laptop. I couldn't seem to do a thing on it but was able to d/l TeamViewer and I gave my friend remote access to it. For the next 48 hours he worked and I worked. We could not open any virus programs such as my MalwareBytes or AVG, as the virus would always just shut them down, even in Safe Mode. We used a certain company's "we fix it for you disc" to boot through and work. It found problems, of course, then we tried installing and running various scanner but to no avail. Eventually, we just tried renaming the scanners such as MalwareBytes, HijackThis, and others. ComboFix worked! It found this big and nasty SKYNET rootkit that was wreaking havoc in my registry. I thought the problems were all fixed. I ran the scanners again and it seemed clean.

Then more problems.

Everytime I turn the computer on, it seems to overheat now. The active desktop does not ever apply a new background image. It always goes back to a plain blue screen. Every time I open a program, it goes through update and installation/setup (Microsoft Word, AIM, Mozilla, amongst others) and neither him nor I can find out why. when you have the logs, start a thread at the first link with the logs attached to your post.
Because there are only a few expert malware removers here, you will wait 24 - 48 hours before someone has the chance to look at your logs and respond. Be patient, you will get help and your computer will be cleaned out.

I just have a quick question. I'm using Windows XP Professional SP3 and I have an admin user profile and also a secondary user profile. A friend of mine a told me to just use the secondary profile all the time accept if you need to install something, that way it's more secure. Not sure how secure it is or if I should keep using my computer this way, but I'd kind of like to just simplify things a bit and delete the secondary profile and just only use the admin profile. Is it possible to save any settings I had on that profile and then just delete that user account?

It certainly is more secure to run in a standard user account, you can see this page in the Techguy Library of knowledge for an explanation as to why. I am in a standard account as I write this for that very reason.

However you say you don't like the situation. The answer I'd be considering would be to elevate the standard user, turning it into an admin. That will be quick and migrate everything. Admitidly it could be a little weird if say the standard account were named "standard" but that's quite a minor thing. If you then want to remove the old admin account, don't do it until the new one is safely elevated.

I have now run through all the steps on the Windows XP Cleaning Procedure up until the "yes, i still have problems." Here are the logs.

Here's the MBAM log.

Two things worth pointing out.
On SAS, I ran it 4 times and it kept freezing and taking upwards of 12 hours. I ran it a fifth time and once I got those 7 registry errors, I just clicked next and deleted them, rather than waiting for it to properly finish.

Secondly, under the Settings tab on MBAM, nothing was checked at all, so it kept saying that there was nothing to scan. I checked everything on the list except for: Closing of IE upon scan, Creating a right-click menu, and Anonymously report. It did not turn up a text file for me on either scan I did. When I would check those items and go to another tab other than Scanner, it would reset those items as unchecked. Weird.

Hello,

So here's my problem when I start my laptop the wallpaper is black and never uses the wallpaper i have saved. The real problem I'm having is in Explorer windows, when I change the display "icon size" or "sort by" settings they go back to default once I reopen the folder again. For example in my "Music" folder I'll have them sorted out by artist then when I leave and come back to the "Music" folder it's no longer sorted by artist. But 1 outta 10 times when i start my laptop I can change the folder view and it saves like it used to before but this happens rarely.

Any help please?

Answer:Windows 7 doesn't save folder view settings

This batch file from the tutorial should set them back to the default. Then when you customize them Explorer should remember the customizations for awhile. It seems nothing forces Explorer to remember for very long. A work-around rather than a fix.

I have z510 notebook. I want to activate battery protection mode (in Turkish "Koruma Modu"). When i activated that mode, if i restart the notebook, all my custom settings turn to default settings. What should i do to keep my custom settings? I'm already using the up to date version.

Whenever I Make A Change And Refresh On The Desktop, The Changes Are Reversed Back To Their Old Settings, Not Default. It Just Stopped Updating Itself. I Use TuneUp Utilities 2007, And If I Correct Problems, All Problems Get Solved... There Is This

Part of your problem could be the lack of RAM and the fact that you have a few browsers installed.

These last two items certainly will not help you have trouble free Internet 'surfing' without the possibility of major threats from spyware or malware.

First thing to do is install a good anti virus program, because not having one and 'surfing' the Internet is like leaving your wallet in a public place with a note on it saying "Help yourself!!".

Which of course is very unwise indeed, and could be the cause of your issues here.

Having said that I recommend that you have a good look at this...

Hi everyone, as the title states, my bios refuses to save settings except date and time, also in the boot menu it shows me these 3 entries:totally ignoring if there's another bootable device plugged in (so it doesn't show up)I tried to do various things, changed CMOS battery, reset bios to default settings, tried bios back-flash unfortunately, that option is set to off in bios, i even tried to set some values before booting, to see if these change just for that session, none of this worked.Also I'm not alone, i noticed another guy here, with the same problem.Is there anything I can do to solve that? my warranty has expired.

When i first ran Frontlines, it asked questions about settings. I tweaked them all and then modified the keys and other settings. The changes were applied until I restarted the game. The game then asked again for my default settings (like it again was my first time running the game).Then I needed to readjust all the changes I had made, the game didn't remember the changed settings.

I played through the first mission in single player, I got to the next mission and the game should have autosaved but when I restarted the game I found out it didn't remember my progress and I was to start over.

I checked on the folder where the game was installed. Yes, ALL the files were "Read-Only". So I unchecked the attribute and applied and Windows removed the "Read-Only" flag from all files, but no folders. The problem didn't get solved.

i am Administrator and use Windows XP Service Pack 3. The game is fully updated to version 1.30. Does anybody have an idea of what is going on?

I solved it, well partly. I found out that there was supposed to be the directory "My Games/Frontlines - Fuel of War" in My Documents. I created the folder and some subfolders and instantly after starting the game new files were added! I then tried changing my controls and it worked, the game remembered!

This is very strange since this tells that the installer didn't install a necessary folder.

However, some other settings still are not remembered but I haven't tried playing the first mission again to see if it might save the progress, don't want to play it through the third time.

If anybody has all the files and folders in "My Games/Frontlines - Fuel of War" available for me to get I would be extremely thankful!

Does anybody play this game?

XP HOME SP2
Following a crash, I put in a new hard drive, reinstalled Windows, re-created the User accounts. Well some of that I had help with!
I made three User accounts and the folders appeared in Documents & Settings, no problems.

A few weeks later I decided to add another User account. The account was created successfully but its folder never appeared in Documents & Settings. That was about a
month ago and it's just never shown up. The account itself works fine, as far as I know. This morning I created a second User account for this person, to see if it would place a folder in Docs & Settings. It still didn't.

Before the crash, I had all four people with four separate accounts, so having four User accounts has not been a problem previously. It's not a reboot issue, as I've rebooted numerous times since creating the person's first account.
Is there a way to force the User account folder to appear in Documents & Settings since XP won't place it there automatically?

Edited to add:
When reinstalling HD, it had to be named "F," not "C."
That didn't affect creating the original three User accounts, though, so I don't know what to think about that. Also no problem with downloading programs, it always defaults to the correct location. Just thought this might be important.

Hello all,

Just around two weeks ago or so, something that I assume I did has caused my PC to stop doing a number of things, such as ;
Recognizing recently used programs in the start menu
Allowing the locking and unlocking of the task bar
Saving the organization of files in the "Quick Launch" bar
Saving my decision to "Show Hidden Files and Folders" from the control panel.
Saving default file associations and other such settings
~~~~~(Such as Firefox as my default browser, Winamp and VLC for all media files (Windows Media Player also goes through setup every time it launched when I forget to use "open with."))
Making folders and other things through the Right Click > New menus in folders and on the desktop
And a wide assortment of other problems that I either can't think of or am unaware of at this time.

I remember having a similar issue once in the past, and I was able to resolve it through a system restore from a time before the issue began. This time however, the earliest restore available was already after the problem began.

I'm not really sure where to begin with this issue. Most of my own little research attempts have lead it to being a registry issue, but I have no real justification for that of my own. Many solutions have pointed to the policies directory for Explorer, but I have no items in there to look at.

I've asked this question elsewhere and got no firm response. In Windows XP pro [or home for that matter].... if the system has multiple User accounts, particularly those with Admin permissions, is HJT user-specific? Do you need to login and run it multiple times in the various Accounts to get an accurate picture?

   Working with a client who wishes to have a laptop usable by both staff and management at his restaurant. He wants the management to have an unrestricted Administrator account, but wants the staff to have a restricted user account such that they
can only use the web browsers to navigate to three specific sites. (btw, the laptop is on a domain) Have been doing research on this for hours now and can't seem to find a solution to what should be a simple problem. All the software suggested costs money,

Quick and easy:Copy a page and paste it into a separate document. Name the file "PageXX.doc" - Amend, e-mail and then if you need to reinsert cut and paste it back.Otherwise we could be looking at tracking changes which I`m not sure you need to do.

Ok well I ran across my first problem with 7, today I tried to download a power point file from my school and under google chrome it saved as "file" instead of .pps ok so I thought this was maybe a google problem (even though it never happend in vista) tried with IE8 and had the same result. I eventually saved the file by adding .pps at the end of the file name but I am curious as to why it doesn't give me a list of options as to what I want to save the file as? I tried to download a picture with the same result, no option as to what to save the file as but with the picture it automatically saved as a jpeg.

under save file as it says "all files"

Any ideas?

ok I found out that if I click on the link(description) it saves as file

if I click on the download pic next to description it saves a .pps file

I'm sorry but my screen resolution will not change from 640x480 pixels & I have an old laptop so I can't get to the "Save" button on the screen in order to save my GMER scan. I have to get rid of all my toolbars, move the status bar, and shove the application screen as high up as possible to get to the "Scan" button. When in Control Panel (as Administrator or as the other user), I can move the slider over to a higher resolution and Apply it, but nothing happens. Until today my computer, running Windows XP Home Edition, had two user accounts; one for my mother (titled "Nancy Loury") and one for me (titled "Kev"). However I found myself simply using my mothers more often and saw having two accounts when both of us really only use one as redundant. So I decided to delete the Kev user account. The account had all of my very important files in it under My Documents. When I went to delete the account, it of course asked me if I wanted to save the contents of the My Documents folder for the Kev account under a folder labeled "Kev" on the Nancy Loury user's desktop. I of course did want to save them, so I clicked "Save Files", the account was deleted, and on the desktop is the file labeled "Kev" which, according to the system, should hold all the contents of the My Documents from the Kev account. I clicked on the folder and to my horror I found that it was completely empty; the system had not saved a single one of the files in My Documents like I had asked it too and like it said it would do. Nothing is there.

I've no idea why this happened, all I know is I'm extremely upset about this. What do I do to recover the files from the now deleted My Documents?

I mistakenly told IE 11 to NOT remember a password for one specific web site, and I want to reverse that decision for the site. All other sites that I have saved a password for are working fine, and I also want IE to prompt me to save a password for the one specific site I messed up on! Help?

First question:  Is there some way to make it to where every document that is saved by MS Word 2003 is in a specific format by default?  In other words, when I type out a document and ?save as? You could set the display you want them saved on as the main display to be able to. By default, the main display is the active desktop.

Hello,
Is it possible to prevent a user from being able to use "Connect to a Microsoft account" from the OneDrive Settings under File Storage?
We are deploying Windows 8.1 Enterprise in a Corporate Environment and do not want to be able to connect Domain Accounts with Microsoft accounts.
I have applied the GPO Setting 
Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Options > Accounts: Block Microsoft accounts = Users cant add or log on with Microsoft accounts
However this has not disabled the option to join a Microsoft Account from the OneDrive Settings. It has disabled the option from the Accounts settings however.
Any advise appreciated

Based on my test, I use the following steps to block the Microsoft account:
1. Open Group Policy Management Editor
2. Go to Computer Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options> Accounts: Block Microsoft accounts.
3. In the drop-down menu, select Users can?t add or log in with Microsoft accounts
After applying the Group policy , I still can?t use the OneDrive to add Microsoft account.
When I try to add the Microsoft account, I will get the following message.

I am running build 14291 of 10 and noticed this today. I have no idea if it was in any earlier builds. It seems like a pretty nice idea- restricting that account to only accessing one web page. I tried to test it out, but I cannot select an account to have 'secure assessment'.
Any one know what this is, and if it is a new feature, or something I'm missing in the setup?
I thought it could be very nice for digital signage, or registration kiosks or something.

Recently, a User Account Settings Popup appears frequently. Keeps asking me to set user account passwords.  I set the notifications to a low level.  Still happens.   T-520. Windows 10. I have no problems accessing user accounts the way I always have.  Don't know why this pop up keeps appearing.

ok well i changed my email because my account that is on the microsoft account at the moment that email has been hacked so i deleted it and have got now a different email and i can't change it because i also don't remember that password as on my computer i have a pin instead of my account password

Need help trying to save a word 2007 document. Am running Windows Vista. I have been working on this document for the past couple of days, a high school maths investigation with lots of equations and graphs copied over from 'Autograph' a 3d graphing software. I have been able to save it with ease with all this stuff on it until an hour ago. When I press CTRL+S it opens up the save as box (even though i've already saved it before). Then when i press save in this dialog box the box closes for a half a second before opening again without me pressing anything. I do it again and again and notice the little loading bar that tells you it's saving in the bottom right hand corner of the document gets stuck and then stops when the box opens up again. I've tried to rename it and this doesn't work. i copied it into an old word document and then saved that document and that document wouldn't save either. i got rid of it off that document and the old document saved perfectly. I closed it just to check it was actually not saving and it isn't. Is there something wrong with my document? or is it word? please help!

Hello, hopefully you guys can help me out. I made a work book to stream line the paper work in my lab. This work book has all the forms in together and uses a master data sheet to auto populate the fields in the various forms. There is one big problem, in order to be effective as a time saver each sheet will need to be saved to its a specific directory.

Here is what I am looking for: I would like a button on each sheet that will save the active sheet to the correct folder (the file path of the folder is typed into a cell on the sheet). Each file needs to be named according to the data entered into certain cells. For instance, A40 G3 B5 would come out to J000245 VCO-8004.007 1494601.xlsx. I also need the "save" button to be deleted in the saved file.

This code that I found on an old thread comes very close to doing what I need it to do:

I have an Excel 2013 spreadsheet that develops hyperlinks for the user to click on to view certain files. However, I want to be able to give the user the option of saving the source file to a folder on our server. Is there a macro that I could create that would do this? I have been looking at your threads and see that you have covered a similar topic a few years back.

I am looking for away to automatically back-up excel 2010 workbooks into a specific folder, so that when I complete filling in the information sheets for my clients and click on the 'save all' box on the spread-sheet, all the back-up excel workbooks can be found in the same folder. I had some luck with a VBA macro but it keeps making a new folder every time I save. If I add the name of the folder, that I want the workbooks to save in, it doesn't work at all. Any ideas? Is there a shorter route than the VBA macro?

Hello,

I want to save the View settings for a certain document to show the two pages side by side. Check out the attached picture.
I press View > Multiple Pages to have them sit side to side and save the document. (Notice how the zoom setting in the bottom right corner states that it's at 121%). When I create a new unrelated document, the zoom is set at 121% still, so I zoom out to 100% and do whatever I need to do with this new document.

If I press the One Page setting (above the Multiple Pages setting) and re-open the original document, the view setting for this document is still using the "global" Word 2013 view settings and no longer shows the two pages next to each other. So when I open the first document again, the zoom setting went to 100% & the pages are no longer side by side.

How can I save specific view settings for certain documents, and not interfere with the default Word view settings?

Word behaves as a word processor, not as a publishing package - when you are in "print layout" view - you are looking at the document as if it were to be printed, the view is not saved in the document.

You can cheat by using a page layout side by side (or in 2 columns) on a larger size of paper - say A3 size landscape for 2 portrait A4 pages - this information is saved in the document file.

Hello all. Not a regular user of Excel; but do need help in creating something that would be useful to me and a few others at work. I suppose the best way of explaining what I'm after is by giving an example.

I have a directory C:\Users\Tekko\Desktop\Maintenance Project\Cape Nelson
In Cape Nelson are a number of folders named alpha beta charlie delta echo and foxtrot and so on.

I would like to have an excel template in "Cape Nelson" with a macro that when activated names the file as whatever folder name might be in say cell A1 and whatever ever date might be in cell B1. Eg charlie_15-mar-2013.xls
This then is saved in the relevant folder. So in the end I would end up with
C:\Users\Tekko\Desktop\Maintenance Project\Cape Nelson\charlie\charlie_15-mar-2013.xls

Also the macro script would ensure that the macro was disabled in the saved file.

Hoping this is achievable and look forward to replies.

I'm trying to run a setting to block any site except a few that I decide is ok to use, however I don't know if that can be accomplished in just the target account, or would it effect all accounts. I'm creating an account for a child, and to me this would be the less hustle and more secure way to prevent the child from getting to any unwanted site.

I know how to block them all, just need to know if can be done to just one account, if so how to proceed.

Only my gmail account has slowed down, and only after several days of using my account after (presumably) being infected.
Loading, sending, doing most things in gmail, except trashing a message, are all about 10 times slower than they was before the infection.
Other gmail accounts seem to be working fine over the same wireless modem and router, even from the same computers on which my gmail account has become infected.
When I used a different computer, at first my gmail account works at full speed. Then after a couple of days, it begins to slow down on the other computer, as well.
All of the above is true when I use Chrome and when I switch to Internet Explorer.
I have about 45,000 files in my gmail account, or 9 GB of 15 GB capacity used, about 60%.

Hello everyone,

I am having trouble deleting an extra administrator account I created using the Ultimate Boot Disk for Windows and a program used password renew. In the past, I have never had this problem occur. There are two accounts on the system, both administrator accounts. One account is original, and the newer one I created a few days ago. When I delete the account through the control panel-> user accounts, everything works properly. The account disappears and the users folder is deleted. I restart the computer, and the account reappears and is fully functional. I have searched google and this forum in order to find help before I bother you all, but I really appreciate you taking the time to read this. Thanks you.

EDIT: I cannot use the Management Console in order to modify accounts. The version of Windows 7 is Home Premium, which only allows you to modify user accounts through the control panel.

EDIT 2: I changed the name of the account, deleted it, and restarted the computer, but the name reverted to the original and the account reappeared.

Hello. I have a question about automatic login on Windows XP.
I work at a computer lab in an elementary and recently we restored all the student computers in the lab. After doing this, all of the computers would log on to the admin account, rather than the student user account as it did before. I was told I could do this through the Group Policy Editor, but after trying it I realized it is beyond my comprehension. If anybody can help I would greatly appreciate that. Thank you!

I don't believe Group Policy can set this this.

You can do this a couple of different ways.
1)Start > run > control userpasswords2
Uncheck the box "Users must........"
Select the user you want to autologin and click apply.

2) Install the Xp PowerToy TweakUI. It has an option for AutoLogin.

We're running Windows SBS 2003, and would like a specific user account (which happens to be a restricted user) to have specific DNS settings, regardless of workstation.

That should be possible via GPO, but isn't working.

DHCP seems to be workstation-specific rather than user-specific, and manual modifications will affect other users on those workstations.

Ideas?

i bought a new stereo that allows you to stream songs wirelessly through wifi. however, it says i have to configure the settings to these:

SSID:W770-INST-PHAS
Channel: 5
WEP: off
AD-HOC mode

how exactly do i do this? im running winxp and my router is a linksys WAP54G. ive toyed around with a lot of settings and i really have no idea how. if it matters, im not the "main" computer on the wireless network. im in an apartment with a few other guys and its his router so i never installed any software for it.

well, i think it's pretty sad that you can't configure your own ssid in the media player.

but since you can't change those settings, you would be best to talk to your roommate, since it will basically change the all the settings on his wireless router, and break whatever wireless network he has now. Since i would be pissed if someone did that with my equipment, my guess is that he would be too.

Hi all,

This is my first venture into a forum so I will try to be detailed and concise! Here's the scenario:

Using Word 2007 I have a mail merged .docm file that includes two macros. The first is an AutoOpen macro that opens the "Find Entry" window, prompting the user to search for one recipient. The second macro sends the letter to the recipient via Outlook and prints the letter (to file the old fashioned way!).

I need to then save the file as a pdf, with the filename of "[Surname] [First Name] [todays date].pdf", which I am currently doing manually. I've tried, without success, to get a macro to input the [Surname] and [First Name] merge fields into the filename in the Save As window. I've also tried bookmarking the fields to reference those in VBA, but I'm now out of my depth!


So there are two things I would love assistance with if possible:

Firstly, solving the auto-filenaming issue to recognise the current entry in the [Surname] and [First Name] merge fields.

Secondly, also having the date in the filename in YY-MM-DD format, to give "[Surname] [First Name] [todays date].pdf" (my letter uses 02 November 2012 format)</SPAN></SPAN>

i have a Media PC in my entertainment center i just setup. i then setup RDP which works great BUT it locks the Media PC and since it is connected to my TV i just want my RDP connection to be able to control the Media PC but still want to see the screen on my TV and cant figure how to not lock the screen when connected?

Hey Guys,
I know you can disable software installation/changing of wallpapers for users via gpo. My question is, is there a way i can disable these settings for just one account alone? There are 2 local accounts, 1 teacher and 1 student. I want to be able to have the teacher account be free to do what ever but have the student account locked down. Is this possible or would it only be able to be done if the computer is on a domain?

Hi, I have a T410 that hangs - ie non-responisve to any form of input - 3 or 4 times a day.   It did this some months ago. I created a new account on the laptop and it didn't happen again.Now it does on my new login.I can create another one ....But anyone got any ideas? It can freeze in an MSOffice Product, Chrome, IE or FF.There is no dump, and nothing in the logs that suggests anything untoward was happening before the freeze.  Nothing is whirring extra hard and nothing is hot.  In fact, it froze this morning, I set up a new login and now no problem.  Given the last week of freezing regularly in the daytime I would have expected a freeze by now on my regular login. Thanks!

I just read on another thread that each user account is separate?

My wife and kids share a laptop....I ran a HJT log for her account, and it looked clean. I then tried to load HJT onto the kids user account, and even after I temporarily changed their user account to 'administrator', HJT would NOT install....something about a problem writing a file and 'access denied'. I tried this twice, then deleted the program and downloaded it again...still no luck. I'd really like to scan the kids user account with HJT...

Any ideas on why I cannot install HJT on the second account?

Hello, I was not able to repair a corrupt registry on my hard drive via the traditional ways (using restore disk, restoring to earlier date, via safe mode, etc). By luck, I still had my old (smaller) hard drive after installing a larger one this past august and was able to boot up. So now the old drive is C: and my registry corrupted drive is E:. I tried restore to the last restorable date and it must be reading only from the C: drive, because the last restorable option is this past August. I swapped the drives again, and used the E: drive to try to boot with no success (same problem - corrupt files).

The question I have is, now that I can access the corrupt (E drive when I boot off the old one, is there a way to restore to an earlier date stored on the E: drive to fix that drives corrupted files? The corrupt problem started around Dec 27, and I know I have a closer restorable date with the data on E:

Or better yet, is there a better solution out there to fix the corrupte files than what I am trying to do?

I ask this question every now and then to see if anyone else may have had this problem and solved it.
I use one particular Yahoo mail account daily on my desktop.Until a year ago I could sign in from my desk top or laptop.
About a year ago Yahoo requested that my password be change. They wanted something longer and more secure. Since then I can sign in fine from the desktop but the laptop gets the "Invalid username or password" message when I try to sign in. This happens in both IE and FF. I can sign in to a different Yahoo mail account from the laptop with no problem. It is just my main account which will not allow me to sign in from the laptop.
I thought it might have something to do with Comodo Internet security 2012 but this was just uninstalled and reinstalled due to another problem.
I even E mailed my username and password to the laptop ( using a different yahoo account) and cut and pasted to the sign in page.Still no luck
Doing internet searches I have seen this exact problem but have yet to see a solution.
Also the the "Invalid username or password" message comes up so quickly it does not seem that enough time goes by to have queried Yahoo about signing in.
Not sure what would be internal to the computer to block a password or username.
Suggestions are appreciated

Hello

I want another administrator account or any other account to NOT have log-off permissions to an administrator account. Forcefully.

I do not want to block task manager or anything else, it's specifically log-off permissions, usually done through task manager. The Administrator account in question is also hosting RDP so I also want to block anyone logging-off of that session as well if it's done separately.

Doesn't matter whatever inherited privilegies other accounts have, ONLY the owner of the account should be able to log-off IT SELF, nobody else!

I have searched and found nothing on web, looked in gpedit a bit but doesn't seem helpful.

Hi everyone

I reinstalled a friends pc using recovery disks. I presumed his log in name was John so I put john in the set up in the box during the routine.

I wanted to copy his stuff back to the original folders only to find he set up his pc name as 'User'

Some of his stuff won't run properly because they need to be in the subdirectories (specifically /roaming) of User.. not John (stupid me for guessing!)

I tried changing the account name of John to User.. which it seems to have done but there is still no User account off the Users directory.. only 'John'

If I can fix this then hopefully his email system (eM Client) will not reject the data

You will want to create a new useraccount with the name of "User". Then move all the stuff to this new useraccount. Afterwards you can delete the "John" account.

That's the only way to properly rename the origional account.

i have an xp sp2 machine updated, firewalled, with anti-virus and anti-spyware programs. this machine has several accounts on it. all accounts run just fine except for one. whenever you log into this one account it will restart and finally after several tries you will get to the desktop. but....if you open a program or app like IE or OE or whatever and minimize that app it will restart. checking event viewer shows random errors such as event id 1015 winlogon error or "suffered from a serious problem and has been shutdown" etc.... i've googled, hit the MS website and have tried several fixes including scandisk in safemode, virus scans in safemode, using other anti-virus to scan with etc.... any ideas or thoughts or suspicions???? please help i've been fighting with this for about 3 days now lol....i went ahead and created a spare account to replace that one for the time being but i would seriously like to know what the issue is and how to fix it. thanks in advance.

okay fixed the issue.....just stuck with the new account i made and transferred the needed files from the old account over before deleting. so done and done fix and over with.

I believe the title provides enough info, but I am wondering as an example in Windows 8.1 if you can create a stand user account called "user1" that can access only MS Office Word, and "user2" that can only access MS Office Excel. Is this type of control possible ?

Hello everyone. I am currently a new tech support guy for a company with a fairly large windows based network (500+ users). We use various web based applications that handle day to day operations (like most companies do anyway ) and yesterday I encountered a fairly unusual issue. At best I could describe the issue as this : One and only one specific user account does not allow the Java Web Start to execute/run at all using IE 9. We've tried deleting and recreating the user account/profile on the local machine and the JWS would run for a bit but then it would no longer run just after a few hours. We would also note that the .jnlp file is simply downloaded then removed by the OS for some reason.

We managed to isolate the issue to this specific user account since upon login with the said user account but then running IE 9 using a different account (via SHFT+RCLICK) then access the appropriate .jnlp file, the JWS would always execute/run without any issues at all.

We have also tried uninstalling ALL versions of JAVA (we are only sing Java 6u21 for app compatibility reasons) then reinstall but the same issue remains. I do suspect that perhaps a permissions issue is present but to which component I am stumped. Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated. Thank you and have a great day!

There is specific website that I use every day and yesterday it just stopped working.

At first it was just loading it slowly but still I could reach first page and login on my account (not more then that). Today it doesn't even loading first page. My friends who also using this website saying that it works fine for them.

At home we have 2 laptops and one PC. Same problem on all of them, also tried on different web browsers like Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome. I can surf on internet, go on any website, it works fine just not this one specific website (http://www.footstar.org/).

I tried to fix somehow but without any success.
Anyone has any idea what could be a problem and solution for that?

If this can help. I use Windows 10. If there is any other information that can be usefull just let me know.

Assuming I am using the correct terminology in my question but knowing that I am possibly talking about something else I will explain. Having done a fresh install of Win7 HomePrem I noticed that when I click on a drive I have to wake it up--it doesn't open immediately and I could here it begin to hum. Prior to my reinstalletion I did not have to do this--clicking on any drive would pop up a window immediately. Then I recalled that I had done this manually and I think it was through the 'Power Options' --> Advanced Settings --> Hard Disk --> Turn off hard disks after... Am I correct in this? That this is how I prevent my disk from going to sleep/turning off? by setting it at 0 or 999 minutes. Assuming not then how do I do so. Assuming yes, then is there a way to do so only for one HD? I have 4 (where my OS sits and 3 others). I do not like to wait every time I want to open a folder in a drive I am not presently using and since this drive mainly happens to be the D: drive and not my E: or F: drive (hardly used) I was hoping I could be specific.

Hi this is not related to my earlier post.

I have installed Windows 7 on this Vista Laptop and it is great software. But I think the Toshiba settings are missing which is causing it to overheat and turn off.

Is there anything I can do to stop it from overheating? Does Toshiba have recommended settings for my specific laptop for running Windows 7. Can I still apply them?

In my opinion if your notebook is overheating you should try to clean it using compressed air spray. Blow gently and shortly with compressed air spray and therefore it?s not necessary to disassemble the notebook. It could blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators and should be done from time to time.

I have a job that requires me to log in to a webpage. In my current Windows user account, no matter what browser I use, I always get a 500 Servlet Exception error. I tried updating Java and disabling my firewall but I still get the error. Then I created another user account and am able to log in to that page using Firefox and IE. So it shouldn't be because of the browsers or security programs. Maybe I messed up some windows settings? Does anyone have any idea on what could be causing the problem and what I can do to fix it? I can't afford to reinstall windows. Thanks!

Is there a way pick which folders a user account can access? Id like to deny access to all folders but 2 to one user. I dont even want them to be able to see inside the folders. can i also prevent them from installing and altering the system? The user accounts menu does nothing specific like that at all.

Sure, just use permissions.

Systems folders are a no-no, so you can't really lock out documents and settings, program files, or the Windows directory unless you granularize everything (major PITA), but you can certainly lock them down by removing the folder (namely read) permissions (never ever ever deny!).

Otherwise, make their user account a plain vanilla user account. Nothing other than the membership of the Users group.

Actually if you feel saucy, fire up mmc from a command prompt, then File->Add/Remove Snap-In, click Add, choose Group Policy Object Editor, click OK, OK, then nose around in the Administrative Templates under User Configuration.

Im running Windows 8 which came pre installed with my hp notebook, but all I see in system properties is "Windows 8" and I typed "winver" into run and all I see is "Windows 8" and nothing about an edition

I need to know this because I am getting an SSD and will need to make a Windows DVD so I can do a clean install onto it.

My computer and internet seem to function totally normally, but one website will not load. It's www.detroitsymphony.com - I've used it often in the past, but as of a few weeks ago, I get the "waiting for...." indication in the lower left corner for several minutes and even when that changes to "Done", the page is blank. No error messages or anything - just no page. This happens on any browser - I even downloaded Chrome and tried it there.

I checked the site on other computers elsewhere, and it seems to work fine. I can't seem to find a single other website that gives me any problems, so I'm sort of baffled. Searching the forum found many posts about internet not working totally, but I couldn't find anyone with this particular problem. Thanks for your help.

Try booting in Safe Mode with Networking and then accessing the website.

If you can access it that way, you might need to try a Clean Boot to isolate a culprit.

If you can't access the website in Safe Mode with Networking, try the following procedure.

Refresh your DNS by following these steps:

Click Start > Run > type CMD

In the command prompt, type ipconfig /flushdns

Reboot.

We all know the terrible history of Windows and folder view settings. They've limited some of the customization options and most of the problems went away. Windows 8 is rather decent in saving the folder view settings. All the folders in my local drives keep their view settings and I have no problems. However, I have a couple folders on my desktop that keep reverting to the default view settings and it is a bit irritating.

Here's the situation: I have several folders on my desktop. Some of them are shortcuts and some of them are located on the desktop itself. The shortcut ones have no problems with the view settings. The ones located on the desktop on the other hand keep resetting to the default view settings. They contain only one type of files - shortcuts for my programs and games. I'm not sure if the type of customization makes any difference, but one of the folders I like to view in tiles and the others in large icons. I usually sort them by date created. No matter of the view or sort setting though, they reset to the default details view quite often.

I've tried most of the possible solutions. I've also deleted and created the folders again but the problems persists. I've tried to identify the actions that might force the reset but I have no definite answer. In past versions of Windows it seemed there were some "connections" between random folders and changing the view settings of one affected the other but I don't think that's the case here because I don't ch... Hi guys,
this issue is closely related to a problem i posted recently here. Just to recap it was a problem with Frontpage crashing everytime i clicked 'save as'. Now i have discovered that this only happens when i am logged on to my account on windows xp - it is an administrator account as are the two others - but i can use Frontpage perfectly on the other accounts. So there is something about my personal settings that causes this - i'm not sure what, any body have any ideas?

What i'll probably do is, just create a new accouont on the comp and transfer all my file acrooss to it, and delete that old account. Just in relations to deleting a user account, does anybody have any tips on this? i mean the process obviously very simple, i'm just wondering is there any residue left afterwards, like files on hard drive, registry entries etc, general untidy left overs that i should be aware of.

The biggest thing that I would watch is the documents and settings folder.

c:\documents and settings\username

Where username matches the name of the account you're using to log in. This will contain that user's My Documents folder, their outlook PSTs (if any), any desktop items exclusive to that user, and start menu items specific to that user. The specific directories are:

.\username's documents (My Documents)
.\application data\microsoft\outlook (Outlook PSTs)
.\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook (Outlook PSTs)
.\desktop (Desktop Icons)
.\start menu\programs (Start Menu Items)

Where . represents the current directory c:\documents and settings\username.

Hi Guys ,
I want to copy some files to a specific user profile for many PCs via batch file . For example ,  User name is AAA . I need to copy files to "C:\Users\AAA\Appdata" .  
As sometimes the user profile of AAA located in "C:\Users\AAA" or "C:\Users\AAA.Domainname". So currently I copy the bat file in the startup folder of AAA . The content of bat file is as below . 
xcopy files "%userprofile%\AppData /S /Y

But the shortage is that it will start to run bat and copy file when AAA login every time . So I want to improve the deployment .
So Does any guys know how to assign special user account (AAA) to %userprofile% variable ? So I can run bat file only once via SCCM deployment and no need to add it into startup folder run again and again .

i changed my account to 'standard user' because i heard it was safer. but to do that i had to create a new user account to be the administrator. but i dont use that account, and at startup it makes me choose which account i want to load. I just want it to go straight to mine. how do i do this?

I want to prevent certain extensions/file types from appearing in the "recent items" list in Windows 7 64-bit professional.

I do NOT want to disable Recent items completely.

I do however want to exclude certain file types such as movies (I have playlists for that), and photos from the list.

I normally use a limited/standard account for my daily use, especially when watching movie files or looking at .JPGs. Lately .MP4 files are appearing in my recent items list again. I want to stop that.

Searching on this issue has yielded a suggestion of a program called "FileTypesMan"

However, while the .mp4 file type already has the checkbox to "don't add this type to "recent documents"" already checked, it does NOT work on my limited account, as they still appear in my "Recent Items" menu.

I solved this problem years ago, but I can't find the bookmark to how to fix it.

I think FileTypeMan fixes things for whatever user is currently using it, but it prompts for UAC elevation when you launch it, so I have to run it as an admin, not as my limited user account. How do I exclude .MP4 files from the "Recent Items" list in my limited account?

The only other thing I can find is this, which talks about an "editflags" entry that I cannot locate with RegEdit when logged in as an admin. Yet I already have some things excluded from my recent items, so how was that done?

Hello, I have a Windows Vista SP2 system that has two separate accounts; one is an administrator and one is the standard client. When the system starts up, the keyboard works fine but when the standard client logs in the keyboard stops working. The keyboard works for the administrative user, however. Any ideas? Thanks.Regards,

Had what sounds like a very similar problem on a Windows XP computer. User could enter their logon details, but when their profile loaded the keyboard did not work.
In this instance it was the Filter Keys.
The user had an icon that looked like an alarm clock down in the System Tray. Double clicking on that brought up the Accessibility Options and I unticked the Use Filter Keys check box, then OK'd out.
Another way to get to the Accessibility Options is go to Start>Control Panel>Accessibility Options.
Hope that this helps someone.

So I've been having this problem for about a month now where a few sites, like WindowsCentral, won't load in Edge. Instead, Edge downloads a .htm file. These websites load perfectly fine in IE. I have this problem on both my laptop (15063) and my work PC (14393) but not on mobile (14393). Switching off my add blocker doesn't help (uBlock Origin).
Any thoughts on how to fix this would be really appreciated!

As I mentioned, I have found some apps that do some of the above parameters, but none that can handle it all.
Am I asking too much here? Or is there a great app (Free or Paid) that will save my sanity and allow this level of tweakage?

Answer:VERY Specific video conversion settings needed - Can't find an app to handle them

Best free transcoders I've used are Handbrake and VideoMonkey. Paid, would be Sorenson Squeeze and Adobe Media Converter.
Could you give us a list of what you've tried, so we don't just suggest everything you've tried and didn't like?

I am trying to set up very specific margins and top/bottom spacing for an online passport application and IE won't let me. I have to print from the explorer window per the sites instructions. The entries I type in keep defaulting back to what IE wants as opposed to what I want.I am trying to input .25 for the margins and .01 for the top and 0 for the bottom. Can it be done?All and any help is greatly appreciated. I'm under deadline.

Go to File > Page Setup. Bottom left corner of the window should be what you're looking for.

My school's computer administrators had the bright idea of making the systems forget all changes whatsoever whenever you log out or reboot to make it harder to mess up a system and to prevent people from moving things around/etc and making things a mess for others. Which is fine. Problem is, they just never get around to configuring quite a lot of things, such as MS Office, which creates a painful hassle every single time we use them, which is every class meeting in one of my classes.

What I'm wondering is, is there maybe some sort of way you could create a script of some sort that would apply all of these little settings, everything from showing extentions of filenames and changing to list view with the status bar on in explorer to providing that first run setup stuff for things like office and opera (which has horrible defaults IMO)?

I've tried talking to them, but, the only time I got anything through at all was when I finally managed to convince them to install video drivers instead of using only the built in XP crap (which, btw, is painfully slow even just raising/lowering a window) and this was because a software that was absolutely vital to one of the classes would not run at all due to requiring the specific OpenGL driver provided by nVidia (which btw, is stupid as it's a 2D java-based program utilizing exactly 0 acceleration, but, that's a matter to take up with Oracle, not the admins here...)

Sounds like your administrators have implemented Mandatory Profiles which means ANY changes you make to the system will be overwritten. Even if you decided to try to make changes to the registry, the only way to implement the changes is to logoff/logon again, which in turn will overwrite said changes. There's no way around Mandatory Profiles...hence the name.
