Solved: user accounts, how to avoid the default login account page?

Question: Solved: user accounts, how to avoid the default login account page?

Hello,

There are three user accounts on my friends computer.

Question:

What if He wanted to stay logged in continuously for hours on end just to his profile without the log in screen reappearing after so many minutes (that shows everyones account like at bootup). I thought this could be achieved by disabling the --on resume, password protect-- feature.

Well, that didnt work.

I hoping to disable the time out feature, that unlogs accounts, and to just run the screen saver, so even if we're away from the computer for a few hours, we dont have to log back in.

Is this possible in XP Home?

Why is not important.... Im just wondering if its possible.

Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Latest build new install on HP laptop. So far, my impression has been very positive. One small issue: On my login screen when booting, it defaults to "Other User". I have to switch it to my account and login. I have checked user accounts and cannot find the other account.
Is there a way to fix this issue?
Any help in resolving this annoyance will be greatly appreciated!

I was wondering if there was a way to avoid login when switching between accounts. I have things set up so I automatically login when I start the computer and when I awake from sleep.

But if my wife is using the computer and switches to her account, when I switch back, I have to sign in.

I could, I suppose change mine to a local account (like hers), but is there a way to do it with a microsoft account?

Answer:Is there a way to avoid login when switching accounts?

Hi Bkshiroman,

I do not believe there is away of natively doing this, it makes sence for not to be able to do this for security reasons.

Although you might be able to use software such as DUST:

Hi everyone and merry Christmas!

I followed the procedure found on the web, I entered "netplwiz" and did uncheck ?Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer".
There is no password set.
THere is just one user/account which is obviously also the administrator.
(the Account tab shows also HomeGroupUser$, but I guess is a default option...)

the point is that when I switch the pc on, I have to click on the icon of the user account in order to see the desktop. Is there any chance I can login automatically without even clicking on the user icon?
thanks a lot in advance

Hello Lorcar, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Go ahead and create a password for your user account, then do the tutorial below again to enter the new password and set your user account to be logged into automatically at startup.

I am using Windows 7 Pro 64x and apparently the default user account (Owner) that I use is not working correctly. Unless I have UAC set to Never Notify, I cannot open Control Panel or UAC again. I have created a second user account as Administrator and it works correctly.

I would like to know if there is any way to fix this problem short of a clean install of Windows. If not, is it possible to move all of my settings to the user account that works correctly and delete the one that does not.

Thanks

I have Bought & installed "Clicker 5", which is a specialist educational software, for my daughter. In order to use Clicker you have to have MS Netframe installed. Now if I leave my PC running it goes to screen saver, but on moving the mouse it goes to the Blue screen with the "Select User Account" option. As I only have one user (me!) that is the only option anyway. However in Control Panel>user accounts I get an asp.machine user showing. If I delete it the software doesn't work.It isn't overly important, but I get irritated having to go through the process of the extra screen in order to check my mail etc, when I am "passing", is there any way around this? (would it hurt to disable the screensaver altogether? I do leave the PC on all day)

Answer:Can I avoid User name/account with Net frame 1.1 ?

Many people never use a screen saver. It is a hangover from days when computer screens suffered from "burn in" ,but monitors have moved on since those days.

Sometimes when my mom logs on her computer, it brings up the old desktop, without the default icons and the default screen saver "Dell" engraved into stone. It still says her name as the user account, but everything is different. I was wondering why this might be, when we restart it there is no problem, but I am just curious if anyone could answer why and how to prevent it from happening.

Thanks!

I'm using a P4 with XP Pro SP2 installed. I use ZASS for my firewall and virus protection, and run Adaware and Spybot religiously to check for spyware.

A few days ago I found that I could not log in to any of the 3 accounts I have set up. After clicking on the user icon, the right user background screen would load, and then I go back to the log-on screen and Windows says "saving your settings".

Starting the computer in Safe mode lets me log into my Admin account. I also managed to create a new user account from here, but cannot log into that one either, I get the same reaction as trying to do a login from the normal screen.

I have run all sorts of virus checkers and they have basically come up clean. Now I need some serious help as I'd hate to have to reinstall Windows!

I have two user accounts on my Win7 Pro PC - Staff and Administrator. Earlier today, I changed the Staff account from an Administrator to a Standard account. I was logged on as Staff when I did it. I then logged off and back on and when I did, only the Administrator account was on the login screen.

The Staff account still exists under Local Users and Groups. I disabled it, restarted and then reenabled it but no change. I don't think that it had a password when I deleted it - I don't add the password until I am done with the machine to make it easier - so many reboots.

The PC is on a workgroup. Any help would be appreciated.

So I originally started with a local account but then signed into the store with a MS account. I changed the setting where users are required to enter a password through netplwiz (like this) and making a password not required after waking from sleep. But after doing this and restarting/shutting down, I'm not automatically logged in like I should be, instead I'm presented with a login screen saying the password I entered was incorrect, even though I haven't even entered one yet, as well as two accounts showing up in the bottom left (like this).

It's acting like the local account is still there and is attempting to log me into it. I've looked in the Users folder, it's just the default, mine, and public. Under accounts in control panel it's only mine that shows up. Anyone know how to fix this? Thanks

Using win10 Pro, this was a clean install.
EDIT~ Just solved it :s

Hit the winkey and type "netplwiz" and hit enter.
If you have the box "Users must enter a username and password..." unchecked, check it and hit apply, otherwise don't do anything.
Now uncheck the same box and hit apply again, now in the new window that pops up, change the username to your microsoft email that you used to sign into the Windows Store. For the password put in your MS email password.
Once you've done that hit Okay and restart, it should automatically log you in like normal.

By default the box has the original local account name which is what screws things up.

My User accounts have all been disabled except one that has my avatar, but isn't the admin account ive been using. it has a different mouse speed for one, and the password isn't the one i've been using for months.

Guest is disabled.

I have tried every password cracker. None of them can figure out the password for said 'unknown' admin account, and some of them like hiren's don't even boot, even though my boot order is CD then WIN.

I even DLed my version of Windows Install AND system restore discs, burnt the iso's correctly, and neither of them will actually boot. My laptop came with no disc and has the internal system restore thing which is why i had to DL them on a different computer.

I need to figure out how to get a cmd prompt before login so i can use "net user administrator /active:yes" or even for the guest account. I know the install/repair discs give c prompt options, but i can't get either of them to boot. and yes i have the boot order so it boots from cd before booting windows.

any help?

Win 10 Pro 1607, single user desktop PC. Yesterday, I changed the password on my Windows account. After that, when I booted, Windows prompted me for a password. The thing is, though, that it showed two accounts, let's call them Sam and Sam Jones. Sam Jones is the Administrator account and the one I was using and shows in User Accounts; Sam is an extra one I created awhile back to troubleshoot some operating problems. I would like to delete the Sam account, but I can't find it anywhere except on the startup screen and under netplwiz (and that takes a little trickery). It doesn't show under User Accounts or after switching users or logging off. For the moment, I've bypassed the password login on both. My question is, how do I find and get rid of the Sam account? Thanks,

I'm trying to set-up a PC for a friend with multiple user accounts. This isn't something I've done before. I've set up a series of Limited User accounts for her children, but have come across a couple of problemsI wanted to set up a custom Default User account and followed the instructions given in Microsoft Knowledgebase article 319974 click here;en-us;319974This presented a problem since new user accounts, which adopt the new Default User profile, inherit the location of the copied account?s My Documents and Outlook profile, but don?t have permission to access them. This means that new users can?t use Outlook. The second problem was with Norton AntiSpam, which adds a plug-in to Outlook. However, when a user opens Outlook for the first time, after a different user has been logged in previously, they are given the following error message:Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime LibraryRuntime Error!Program: ...\OUTLOOK.EXEabnormal program terminationThe only Solution I have found has been to disable the plug-in and switch off AntiSpam. Symantec haven?t been able to suggest anything else and this seems like it a common problem. Can anyone suggest any solutions to either of these?

I'm the only user on this laptop and my admin account was called "HybridPC" and I disabled the windows login screen. (Turn computer on and goes right to desktop). One day the welcome screen popped up out of nowhere and I had to login. I tried disabling the login screen to where it was before and now I've screwed things up royally. I cannot login to my original admin account or find it. All the files are still there on my C:\Users\HybridPC folder, but I've lost the profile and user.
I think I messed things up further by trying to create/delete other new user accounts. I've attached 3 screenshots showing my C:users folder, User account screen and the netplwiz.exe profiles.

I've been adding/deleting and can't get back to square one. I don't see my user at all on the welcome screen.
Thanks for your help!

Hi

I regularly use for different user accounts on my computer, 1 for each family member. A few weeks ago one of the accounts just reset back to default, outlook and everything had been completely reset and i couldnt work out a way to get this account working normally again so i left it.

Today this has happened again to one of the other accounts, basically everything is gone. Internet Explorer is still there, i tried using it and the computer froze. The IE window also came up in a old format (like it would, i think, if it was windows2000).

Also, when starting up the computer a .dll error will pop up. (dont know if this has anything to do with it).

The other two accounts are working fine, run fairly slow every so often but thats all.

Anyone know why this is happening or how i can fix it.

Thanks,

Nick.

Edit: Also, i dont know if this has anything to do with it, but we turned on Windows Live Onecare yesterday.

I have always been running admin and even until now I run as admin. But, I have been doing a little bit of research and realize that using a standard account is a safer practice. I have never even used a standard account. Is using a standard account a better practice? Also, how does doing average task such as installing programs and updating work through the standard user account?

Answer:Using default admin account vs standard user account

Its safer to always run programs with lower privileges, and run as administrator when needed. Personally, I like my UAC set to the max. Basically, it stops programs from messing with your PC without permission.

Hi there,

this problem just surfaced a few days ago where i've left my PC vacant ( because i went overseas ).

Currently I have 2 user accounts ( one is Administrator and one is ABC ). Admin is the one which was default and never used. i've always used ABC account ( i set it to auto login and no password demand upon login ) to do all my things. however, now it just logs in automatically to the Administrator account, and all my settings are not in this account. since it was a default account, winxp doesn't allow me to delete it. what can i do in order to login straight to ABC and not login to any other account ever again? also, what caused this problem? would like to know so i can prevent it from happening again. thanks!

Answer:problem with user accounts. (login)

Click Start, Run and type CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2, and click Ok. Select the user account from the list (the account to which you want to automatically logon). Uncheck Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer option, and click Ok. I've been having problems, read tapcc13's original post and replies.  I'm presently downloading ESET Online Scanner as suggested.

Weird things:  a floaty cursor I couldn't really control, unusual firewall/user/network entries on Norton SecurityLog and more.  Scans with a variety of programs didn't pick up on it. Somehow, probably thru Adminstration Tools, I found the spigot folder in my Programsx86 about the same time I found an IP address that wasn't my own.  I googled the ip address and one of the names for that server was spigot.  Using Norton, I created a Firewall rule to block any traffic to/from that IP address.  Afterwards, the Norton Security History showed that IP was constantly trying to access my computer but it was blocked.   I had been trying to resolve this issue for days and finally just gave up, backed up all of my doc files, photos and "repaired" Windows 7 which wiped almost everything off of my computer.

I haven't been able to find out much about spigot other than someone saying its a rather nasty redirect/toolbar and another site mentioned that it is something found on computers in France. (I'm in California.)  Personally, I think it's more than that or something else is going on.  I do a lot of online research and have had more than my fair share of viruses and a couple of Trojans over the past 4 years but was able to resolve all but one of them on my ... I recently purchased a used Compaq Armada 7710MT laptop. It operates uses Windows NT and was configured for a network. The original owner gave me the NT password when he passed it on to me, so I have been able to access it.

Then I came up with the "brilliant idea" to reload Windows NT, omit the networking capability, and start anew with a "clean" operating system.

BAD IDEA!! After loading NT successfully, following all the procedures, when I boot-up to NT, the log-in screen shows: the User Name field has "Administrator" provided [as the default] in the field; the Password field is blank.

If I change "Administrator" to the User Name I indicated in the NT setup procedure, and then type in the Password I indicated in the NT setup procedure, a message notes that the system could not log me on!

Likewise, if I leave "Administrator in the User Name field, and type in the Password the orginal computer owner gave me to access NT, I also get the message that the system could not log me on!

I can't access the computer! Any help for me?

Thanks.

Dennis

If you did a clean install (formatted the drive) then the admin password will have nothing to do with the last user.

It should be whatever you set it up as during installation. Did you leave it blank? If so, just click ok.

Hi everyone,

I share a desktop computer with another family member. We have two user accounts, "Matt" (mine) and "John". Both are administrator accounts. Two days ago, when John logged in after I was done using the computer, the "Welcome" screen took way longer than usual (probably ~30s), and was followed by a couple minutes of a completely black screen (with a cursor) before finally showing the desktop. This problem on his account has persisted ever since.

The computer is otherwise perfectly responsive and usable, the boot time is very short, and I can still log into my account in a few seconds. It's also possible to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to open the task manager in the black screen phase, and it seems to show nothing unusual and very low CPU activity.

I've tried the following, but I'm not sure what to do next:
Boot in safe mode: this solves the problem (but I don't know what to do with that)Create another administrator account: the new account has the same problem as John's.Disable every startup program with the task manager (when logged in as John): doesn't solve the problem

The one thing I remember doing that day that may have changed some system configuration was installing KeePass 2. I've removed it since.

Please ask me if you need any other information.

Any pointers would help, thanks a lot!

My apologies if this is in the wrong forum.

Is there a way for me to set up automatic logging in at start up of, lets say, 4-5 user accounts? The accounts serve no purpose other than running different instances of a program that I could then manage from my main account, but for each instance to initialize, I have to manually log in to each account on system startup. (I'm also seeking to find a way to hide those accounts, but I can't do so yet because I have to log in to each account every time I restart my computer.) So a program or registry edit of some sort would be most helpful

I've done some research, but as of now, I've only found a way to auto-log in one account (presumably intended for main accounts) so this is useless to me. ("control userpasswords2" in Run)

Just to clarify, all of my accounts are password protected, though the additional accounts have very basic passwords (which is required). I do want to keep a password on my main account, and I don't want to auto log in my main account.

Thanks!

Now when we turn it on it dosnt start up at all, the green power light turns on in the tower but nothing happens on the moniter screen.

we called DELL and the technician said it was a problem with the graphics card, we bought a new one and it starts up fine but only gets to a black screen before the user accounts log in page.
(this is after the option of, resume windows normally, or, start with safe mode....goes to a black screen with either of them)

Phoning back DELL with the problem their now telling me its not a hardware but a software problem.

I was on my adminstrator account and I created a new account and switched the account's type to administrator while switching the account I was already on to a standard account. So I logged off and tried to enter the newly created administrator account but and message appeared and said that the profile service could not login, profile could not load. I had no choice but to enter the older (standard) account. And as a standard user I had all these restrictions imposed on me. I required administrator permission to do installations and even to change my account type to avoid this. It wouldn't have been such a problem since the administrator account didn't even have a password set but because the other profile couldn't be located I wasn't able to do anything at all and not disable that account. By default they will save in Documents (for instance it would be C:\Users\Steph\Documents (presuming Steph is the active user name)) if you are referring to word however if you choose a custom directory / location it will open up the last saved location. You can change the saved locations for office applications presuming that is what you mean.

Is there anyway to fix the photos app for a specific user account? On my main admin account it works ok. But there was a series of updates to some of the native apps a few days ago, one of those was the photos app. Since then the photos app will not work on my wife and son's user accounts (both standard accounts). Clicking on it brings up nothing. When I went into the store for their own accounts and searched for photos it actually gave an option to install it. I tried that and it went through the motions downloading/acquiring license but it made no difference. Still doesn't launch the app for them.

I don't particulary want to have to go through the process of deleting their accounts and setting them back up (which is time consuming). Creating a new user account does get the user a working photos app (as I did a test). Is there a simple way to do it without potentially breaking the photos app on other accounts (where it is currently working)?

I am aware of powershell fixes but I have read some horrible stories where the code just makes things worse and breaks a lot more especially in the current build of 10586. I'd want any attempted fix to be purely isolated to the affected user's account.

It does seem that the native apps have some pretty bad problems with updating and breaking down. Sometimes I go into the store and look at the check for updates section and see them seemingly stuck in the update process. Sometimes they need a bump to get them going. There seems to be a ... Answer:Default Photos app - fixing for specific user accounts

Hi, can't give you an exact answer to your main question about issues between accounts, but I think the way MS means this to play out is that the set of Universal apps provided in Windows is meant to
a. always exist
b. be transparently updated

That is, you shouldn't have to intervene. And if you don't want to use them, simply ignore them. As with their implementation, it's a new model. And then think... how many people uninstall Paint, Notepad, Wordpad?

Note that there is a scheduled task to check for app updates- it should happen automatically. Maybe it's safer to leave updates to that.

I suggest if there's no easy solution to your account problem, that you simply use a 3rd party desktop program. I'm sure you know there are plenty around. Unsatisfactory... but avoids trouble. And it's not such a big issue that some universal apps aren't available.

Hi

I have a touchscreen laptop and 3 user accounts, one of which is for my children (aged 3 and 5).

I would like to be able to make the default mode for my children's account 'tablet mode' (to make it as simple as possible for them to use and access key apps) while keeping the mode as 'normal desktop mode' for my wife and my accounts.

When I change my kids account to 'tablet mode' (using the switch in the 'Action centre') , when i log back into my account, that also then defaults to tablet mode, which is not what I want. Is there any way of setting different modes depending on the user?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hi, seen lots of threads about this error message but not in this context so I'm thinking I might get some joy from you oracle like marvels.

A customer I saw today had a family Win7 PC with four user profiles on it. All worked apart from one called Hannah. When selected it started to load but then just showed "The user profile service failed to logon. user profile cannot be loaded"

the account was hardly used (Hannah is 9) so we decided to delete it and make a new one with a different name. For some reason the exact same thing happened!

Reading up on this people say to open regedit and go to HKEYLOCAL MACHINE>software>microsoft>windowsnt>currentversion>profilelist.
All the profiles for the three working profiles were there but the profile for Hannah or the new profile I made wasnt present.

So its like windows has a problem with running a fourth profile rather than it having an issue with one. Any ideas on how I might go about fixing this?

CHEERS!

Please run System Restore, from booting up with your Windows CD, and using the Recovery Console

Boot from Windows CD
Allow all the initial loading of drivers
Press R when requested
Press 1
Then press Enter
(Hopefully no password on the Administrator account)

Then type on the command line:

rstrui.exe (or directly: c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe)

Hi, My uncle cannot log into Windows because somehow the user account names are gone from the Windows XP login screen. I tried to boot in safe mode by pushing the F8 button. Went to the login screen still blank. No user accounts. Just the XP blue screen. Also tried Last known good configuration when the computer worked. Still the same thing. No user accounts. Weird. I also tried the Ctrl+Alt+Delete 2x method and didn't get anything to come up. Is there anything else I could try short of putting the Dell Windows XP installation CD in and doing a Repair install? Thanks.

If you can't even get into Safe Mode, there isn't anything else (apart from a repair installation) you can do that I can think of.

Hello. I'm looking for some registry tweak or similar that will always switch to a specific user account on boot, although not login automatically. I have two accounts, but I want Windows 8.1 to show the login screen for 1 particular account without having to switch to it from the previously used account. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Default login account

Hi welcome to Tech Support Guy
Personally I would just click the back arrow on the log-in screen - the reason I say that is that I have come to the conclusion that Windows 8 most certainly does not like having the way it is set to behave - changed by other than those methods already provided by Microsoft.

I do not know of a tweak to always show ONLY the log-in screen for ONE particular user - but here is the way to stop it always returning to the last user
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/14632-sign-show-all-users-last-user-windows-8-a.html
However all it does of course is show the users without having to click the back arrow - IMHO not worthwhile
If you are going to proceed I would ensure you have a restore point

Ok so here's my problem.

This has all stemmed and started from an issue I'm having trying to play The Sims 3. I'll try to keep it short on THAT issue.

Basically, I've installed The Sims 3 and every EP. IT worked FINE but then adding a user mod caused it to corrupt the exe or something because I couldn't then get it to launch. After wiping The Sims 3 off COMPLETELY CLEAN and reinstalling all again WITHOUT the user mod. It loads and runs fine EXCEPT when clicking on 'Create a Household' it then CTDs EVERYTIME with an appcrash and fault module being d3d9.dll.

I've tried EVERYTHING to correct that, including reinstalling directx. NOTHING works.

Ok SO. I thought maybe trying it on a new user account. So I created one but upon logging off it is nowhere to be seen in the login choices and instead just shows my usual Admin account I use everyday and a blank box named as 'Other Users'

I rebooted and when it restarts it stops before desktop loads and comes up with the default Admin logo (the flower) and says 'your account has been disabled. Please contact the administrator'.

I managed to get things back to how they were fairly easily but HOW can I stop this happening and how can I do the simple thing of creating a new user/admin account????

Please help.

Many thanks.

Answer:User accounts issue. Can't create 2nd account.

Hello Bazerk,

Try this: uninstall all Sims user created content as well as the game and all EPs. Log in as an administrator and run this tool: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

You might instead consider doing a system restore if you have one to a point before the trouble began: System Restore. make sure you try an SFC scan (linked above) after if you do do this to make sure everything is working well.

Check to make sure you have installed all of the lastest microsoft updates.

Into your start menu search bar, type "DXDIAG" without quotes and click it. Let the diagnostic run. It should tell you which version of directx you have installed on your system. If you have a 64bit system, click Run 64bit Diagnostic.

Be careful with user created content, not all of it is safe or stable.

With your completely updated antivirus, perform a full scan an your system. Sometimes the Antivirus itself could interfer and cause problems. Consider temporarily disabling it when next you decide to install the Sims game.

Directx should be installed already or installed with the game install. You shouldn't have to go to the internet to find it in download form.

I am using Vista Home Premium 64bit. I currently have two accounts set up as an administrator. One as my standard user account, the other 'administrator' account I created awhile back when Adobe tech support helped me create it to troubleshoot installing adobe apps.

If I go to Control Panels - -> User Access, when I select any of the links "Change your account name", "Change your account type", Manage another account" or "Turn User Account Control on or off" nothing happens.

Well, I should say, I get a windows UAC dialog asking if I 'Agree' to make changes or whatever, but then nothing happens.

I did try starting my PC in SafeMode, but no change.
I tried starting up by setting 'msconfig' to have all services/startup items off, but that didn't help.

I can type "control userpasswords2" to access stuff, but I'm not sure if that helps me in anyway, since I'm new to Vista.

Thanks!

On my laptop I created a new user account called "Colin". When I looked (in Windows Explorer) under "users" there were two new accounts listed, one called "Colin" and one called "Colin.laptop". Of these, only "Colin" appears at Login or if accounts are viewed under "User Accounts" in Control Panel. Yet the "Colin.laptop" account is the one where newly created files etc are being stored when logged in as "Colin".
I'd appreciate help in understanding this and do I need to take any action?

Thanks
Paul

Answer:Creating new user account adds TWO accounts

Was this created during install or added to other User Account(s) afterwards? What about the other User Accounts now? If you had a Colin account established at install then it will hang around in some places even after deleting until a reinstall.

Did you establish Colin as an Admin account? If so is the other Colin also an Admin account when you look in User Accounts>Manage another Account? Can you delete it if it shows up there as a Duplicate? If so put its files on desktop until you're sure.

How to correct user accounts in windows 8 Pro on new HP Pavilion g7 2246nr, I set notebook up using Microsoft account then called Microsoft when problems started, and we decided to switched to a local account. They created a new user account, then copied all my files to it. But I ended up with i administrator account that could not be deleted. that worked but my files are broken up between 3 other user accounts. I spoke with Microsoft to try and consolidate the accounts and they used a command line in cmd, run as an administrator, but it did not finish, or I may have cut it off by accident. I am still working with the system but it has problems. I have reloaded the software 3 times so for. Does any know how to correct the problem without reloading all the software again? Also after setting up sharepoint in Office Pro Plus, it created another administrator account in UAC. I did not think this was going to happen? Right now in the UAC I have two administrator accounts with the sane name, In c:users there 5 with the temp file they created. Does any one know what that command line they attempted to use was to correct and consolidate the user accounts.
If any one knows how to correct the problem without reloading all the software again. It would be greatly appreciated?

Answer:User Accounts Can't Delete bad or corrupt account in UAC

I recently had a similar issue where another account was created that i dont want.. I removed the user through the normal channels but the folder was still there and I was denied access to delete it.

I have a remedy that will definitely delete it but if you say they have the same name, you may remove the wrong one.. How many user accounts total do you have and have access to with name and password?

I can walk you through to rename it and reboot and see if all is ok and if there is no problem I can walk you through the delete if you cant at that point already...

If its not urgent lets give it a day or two and see if anyone else has the proper solution instead of the forced solution that I have.

Hi there,

I had a similar situation, although I didn't have to create the Administrator's account...that was still there. All the other accounts I had created didn't show up on the welcome screen. Here's what ultimately fixed it:

I logged in as administrator and went to Computer Management. I checked each of my users and I noticed that none of them were assigned to groups anymore. I assigned each one to the Administrator's group. That brought all of them back to the Welcome screen. If you haven't resolved your issue yet, I hope this is of some help to you!!

Answer:How to display multiple local user accounts at login screen?

Hi, mikemet, and welcome to the Windows 10 Forums.

Which version of Windows 10 ae you running on your machine? I am on Insider Preview build 14965 and there is a Group Policy item that is made exactly for that, but it may be build specific or may have appeared since the Anniversary Update, I cannot be sure as I never went looking for this particular setting until you posted your question.

See if your Group Policy has the following:

Enumerate local users on domain-joined computers (Computer Configuration --> Administrative templates --> System --> Logon)

If so, try enabling that and seeing if it works, and (moreimportantly) if it sticks after the first non-domain login on the laptop.

EDIT: Added the following

OK, looking up that GP entry, I see that according to Enumerate local users on domain-joined computers | Windows security encyclopedia that it has been around since Windows 8, so you should have it on your machine, assuming you're not running Windows 10 Home joined to a domain.

OK, so I fear I may have messed up a bit, but I'm hoping the gurus on here will save me...

Previously (until 10 mins ago!) when switching my laptop on I was prompted with the login screen where I could select either the Administrator account or my own personal account.

I decided that I wanted to hide the Administator account and have only my personal account at startup / login, so began searching online for a how-to, and found this:

How to hide the administrator account in Windows - How-To - PC Advisor

Followed it step-by-step to the end and then restarted my laptop. Now when I switch the laptop on I am prompted with a blank Windows username and password login screen.

Now of course this wouldn't be a problem if I had a username or password, but unfortunately I do not and currently have no way of getting back in to my own account.

Please can someone shed some light on this? I would be forever grateful!

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I've got the weirdest thing going on with my pc. I have 4 kids accounts and 1 for my spouse other than the admin account.

When I go to the local disk C: and select the "Documents and Settings" folder, I find that 3 of my kids accounts have a second folder set up... For example:

There's a folder for Child_A (We'll call this folder "Child_A" for simplicity)
Then there's also a folder that's called: "Child_A.Name_of_Computer" (Where "Name_of_Computer" is actually the name I gave to the computer... Not literally here!) But it's really a folder with the dot extension name of the computer attached onto it.

Now there is also an account for another child exactly like this too.

A third child account does something a bit different.

It takes the account name, say "Child_C" and then the other folder would be "Child_C_2"

Where it really gets creepy is that I'm using an app that views the history of urls visited. Checking on the fold "Child_A.Name_of_Computer" results in hits to porn sites... (Don't yell at me - I'm in the process of cleaning this up ~ these are young kids and I'm po'd that my spouse even visited these sites on this community pc.

My question is ...

What's the best way to clean up the folder issues... I'm not sure how these folders even got added other than maybe the accounts not being added correctly.

My thought was to back up... Read more

I use Vista Ultimate edition 32 bit. I recently set up an account for my 3 year old grandson to use. However, every time I log off and/or switch users to enter his profile/account, all I am able to access is my account. I don't even see his account available for me to access.

I set up multiple accounts on my machine running XP (years ago) and when I logged onto the computer, all of the user accounts were visible. Not so with Vista. All I ever see when I boot the computer up is my account.

Per my reading, that original pw is necessary to use recovery console [I think winxp inside/outside]. Other than access to the recovery console I haven't found anything that the administrator on a local computer [not connected to a domain] can do that any other administrator can't. Has anyone found something else? Q2. My understanding of user accounts, including The Administrator account, is that when you first set up an account it is assigned its security identifier [SID]. If you delete the account you lose access to that account's files, but you can change both the pw and user name [the SID doesn't change]. Is that correct?Q3. If you change the password on the Admin account the recovery console should use the new password also.1.Certain files are not viewable without the Admin account such as certain instances of temporary internet files other than that not much.2.This is correct with the exception that files linked to the account still can be accessed by taking ownership of the files with another account that has Admin privilges.3. See above.4. If you can access them you can move them or copy them. Your choice. You will not need to take ownership unless access has been denied.5. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/243330 is a list of the well known SID numbers6. Encryption is not really based on the password but a seperate unique ID associated with the account when encryption is initially set up. You can and should back up this key since if you need to restore from a backup you will need it. The reason to have a strong password is to prevent account access because the encryption does squat if they can access your account. Once you set up encryption for a particular account that key never changes. You could set up a specific account to be the recovery agent but why bother the local admin account is a recovery agent by default.

The other day I thought it'd be a good idea to screw around with the settings on my parents' computer. My parents say they can't trust me and you'll find out why.

My parents put a limitation in the first place for me to not download anything malicious, and around last summer I was always yelled at for using the computer at night, so they put Parental Controls (only the time limit, from 8AM to 9PM) and changed my account type to Standard User. That means I can't use the computer at night, even if I tried.

I was sick and tired of it, honestly, so I thought the smart thing to do was to download an .iso to burn to a disc to reset the password, and or, promote my account to administrator. I downloaded the Trinity Rescue Kit and burnt it to a DVD in order to promote my account to administrator. Little did I know, the thing kind of messes up with your UAC, I ignored the warnings. In order to use Parental Controls, you have to be a Standard User. Which, I updated my account's settings, and well, the controls didn't go away. I still had the time limit, and all the other stuff my parents put on here. I tried to go into the Control Panel to remove it and it did absolutely nothing. When I clicked on my account's name it said I had to be a Standard User to change it. I tried to change my account to a Standard one and it did absolutely nothing. It remained an Administrator, which I knew if I left my account as an Administrator, my parents would one day find out that I've been downl... Read more

Answer:User Account Control (UAC) problem w/ administrator accounts

I'm sure you do know the trouble you are in but there's really nothing else you can do but own up to the problem you have caused. Obviously the controls were put in place to prevent problems associated with nonresponsible actions.

Be prepared to have to do a Factory Restore on the computer/s if the login for your parents and/or your sister don't work. You might need a Linux LiveCD or LiveDVD bootable disc to first save any documents/data they have saved.

To avoid such problems in the future get your own computer.

Hi, I noticed that in Internet Explorer, which I do not use regularly, the Windows Live login page has all the e-mail addresses saved that people have used and checked the option to "Remember me" while in Firefox, only the last user's e-mail is ever saved so if I am using the computer after my brother, I have to click to sign in with a different user and re-enter my e-mail address. In IE, I just could click my e-mail address on the login page and then just enter my password. Anyone know how to display multiple e-mail address options on the login page, specifically for Firefox?

I have mixed permissions on Windows 10 from trying to back one windows.old file and windows-bt. I added "Everyone" to the user names and groups list but there's a red icon on the administrator account with an X it has "Special Permissions" I haven't found a single thing I couldn't do on the computer I was even able to update and play games on it.
1.How bad is this and how vulnerable is my computer? Again I haven't found anything I couldn't do or any errors and I'm the only one that uses this laptop. It does have kasperky.
2. What's the safest way to undo these changes? I found a method for it using the cmd but it's seems risky from the mixed results I read from other users and I don't want to make things worst than they already are if they're bad.
3. How do I know what profile I'm using and what permssions it has? I'm aware that I'm using a local account on windows 10, but when I check the users in the task manager I see the original name from before I changed it. Is there a way to switch to the administrator (not the hidden one) account? and is there a way to make my local account an administrator?
4. What is the interactive account? because I'm also seeing that in user names and groups ever since I made the channges.
5. What's the difference between the administrator and the administrators accounts?

I manage the Networks for several companies remotely and not all users are computer friendly enough to know both their username and password, only their Password. So, when doing maintenance and I log on to a PC as an administrator or other user I will often
get a call the next day that their "password is not working" because it is using the last logged on user, which this time is me.

Is it possible in any way to set either a default domain user, or set it to a most often logged on model instead of the current last user or the alternative of prompting for user name every time?

When I first turn the PC on it attempts to login through what must be the default account held by Windows 10. That fails because the password doesn't match. So I'm at the login, I've forgotten the password. At the login screen there is a second user icon for which I do know the password. So I can login manually. This is OK but I want to login automatically.I figure I can delete the faulty login (if I knew the password) or make the second user icon the default profile or account. I'm not sure if this is a feature of my version of Windows 10 or not, but I haven't found anywhere within my system that enables me to reset my password. This has been frustrating. I've tried netplwiz but haven't had access to anything to make a change. I followed the TenForums Tutorial to guide me through the registry, where I looked at the ProfileList and although there were several profiles with S-1-5 type numbers there was only one profile which had a GUID long number. Apparently this means it is an active profile. I don't have enough confidence in this area to do anything with it. So, I'm hoping I can get some assistance to resolve this situation and hopefully be able to turn on the PC and have it login automatically and finish at the desktop.

Answer:How do I change the profile or account of the default login

It sounds like you don't have access to an account with administrator privileges. Open a command prompt or powershell (Press Win + X to get the list where you will find Command Prompt or Powershell) and run:
net localgroup administrators

What accounts are listed under Administrators? Is one of those accounts one that you can log into?

For example, the accounts on my computer that are administrators are Administrator (which is disabled by default in Windows 10) and John:

Code:
C:\Users\John>net localgroup administrators
Alias name administrators
Comment Administrators have complete and unrestricted access to the computer/domain

Members

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Administrator
John
The command completed successfully.

Hi guys,
I have Windows 7 Professional and two days ago I turned my computer on and type password to my account and everything seems ok and I go out of my room for several minutes. When I came back Windows was still loading, without any error mesage, it looks good but it wont work. I tried several times to login but i can't, I even tried to login through Safe Mode- same story. The problem is that it is my admin account, I have standard user account which works but I can't use my PC properly by using standard user type of account because when I want to install something or change some system settings I have to type password of admin acc, then when I type it, my screen became dark and I can't do anything, just to turn off a computer by pluging out power cable...

Have you any idea what can cause this problem? I will appreciate your help.

I think it might be a virus or malware. I just downloaded some kind of patch to install windows themes. After I restarted my computer, it wouldn't let me login to either of my user accounts. Sometimes it will ask for a password and sometimes it wont but I don't use passwords. It wont even do anything when I click "Turn computer off". If I let it sit there it will keep restarting every few minutes. I can login to safe mode and change/delete passwords but it didn't help.

Hello Ngzek,

If you only see "Other user" on the sign in screen and have to enter both user name and password, then it sounds like you have may have enabled the Interactive logon: Do not display last user name security policy. Disabling will sort this for you if so.

Hi,
I have a Windows 8.1 system on a lap top that was used by a former employee. Her name was still on user name and I couldn't change it without Admin privileges (otherwise was asking for a smart card). Found out how to get in to admin in safe mode with Net
User Admin yes- then discovered that the old log in and information / desk top is no longer available. The docs are under Users (old employee's name) in C drive, but the docs and settings no longer show up and the admin log in is the only one available - no
option to change users.
When I went in and said Net User Admin no - thinking if I disabled admin user it would go back to the old log in -  there was no log in available at all.

Help?

Hi all,
I am creating an image for my new model PC and looking to modify the default settings pulled once a new domain user logs onto the machine for the first time. I don't want to have the default profile on the network, but have it on the local machine. I have seen articles about modifying an exisiting profile on the PC (ei. Administrator) and then copying it to the "All users" profile, but haven't been able to get that to work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Al

Is there anyway to give a "User Account" the same rights as the "Default Administrator Account"?

Answer:Default Adminstrator and User Account

Try this & let me know how it goes. Remember you have to login to Windows 8 with Admin Account.

User Account Type - Change in Windows 8

1. Run ''COMPMGMT.MSC''
2. On Computer Management -> System Tools - > Local Users and Groups and left click Groups to select.
3. You'll see Administrator group, you can click Properties
4. Administrator Properties click the Add button
5. Select the USER box type in the name or accounts you want to add to Administrator Group and click Check Names

Click Ok to Save & Restart with the new user you just added to Admin

Hello,

A few months ago I purchased a Toshiba Satellite Laptop that has Windows 7 installed. I blew through the set up process and I realize that I made a descision that I want to change.

My computer had a default setting for the user of OWNER-TOSH when I look at our network. How can I change that to a different name? I have cruised around the Control Panel and just can't find it.

Thanks for the help!

-Dave

Answer:Default User Account Name Change?

The best way is to MAKE and new account and then move all of your files to the new account. You will need to make all of you customization again.

AFTER you have moved everything and have been running the new account for a while (several days), then you can delete the account AND files from within Control panel.

Yes, there is a way to rename the account, BUT, the folder under "Users" will stay the same.

When starting up my computer (WindowsXP), I get an error message telling me I'm not the user and I can't logon until I change the user. If I close out the error message and change the user to owner, I can log on.

The problem is, the user it wants to use to log on in the first place is "ASPNET." That user does not exist in anywhere on my machine. Not even in "user accounts," although, when I do a search on "ASPNET" I get about a dozen files.

My question is, what IS "ASPNET?" I need to get that off the logon screen and make "OWNER" the default logon.

Please help.

Thanks

Linda

The old Administrator account may still be there, try booting up in safe mode to see if it is, if so log on and try a system restore from there or possibly even deleting the new ID.
