Preferred Solution: Windows XP Pro Menu Commands out of order!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a new box with my first installation of Win 10 and I am trying to figure out the start menu interface. I downloaded and installed Firefox and the installer package created a start menu shortcut with a name of "Mozilla Firefox". Fair enough, but I am used to having it on a start menu sorted alphabetically with the short name "Firefox". So, I went into c:\programdata\Microsoft\windows\start menu and did a rename, which worked fine.
The problem is that Firefox still sorts in the "M" group as if it was still name Mozilla even though the icon reads Firefox and should, logically, sort with the "F" group. Is there a fix for this?

Something I've pondered for a long time, and never actually gotten around to looking into:

How the $%#! does Windows Explorer decide what order to put the context menu items in? Does anyone know how to re-order it?

As far as I can tell, it's completely willy-nilly. It even seems to change from right-click to right-click. (Right-click on a few different folders. You'll see the same menu items, but sometimes the order will change for no apparent reason.)

Is there some place that I can search to see if windows files/commands are legitimate? I have Zone Alarm and it has programs on it trying to access the Internet that I do not recognize.
Examples: xpsplhtm.exe; OOBE\msoobe.exe; net.exe (System 32); self-extracting cabinets (Software Distribution Downloads)
Parentheses are where the files are according to Zone Alarm.

Another one was: Microsoft Out of Bounds.

Please help! I have Windows XP Home Edition with all updates. I have ZoneAlarm free and McAffee AntiVirus. Nothing has been detected.

Most of the times I'm getting help there are instructions for going through menus, (click something then right-click on another item) and so on. Many times I follow through then something I'm told to click ISN'T there in the menu. Why are these items missing and how can I restore them? I'm on as Administrator so shouldn't the menus be complete?

Hello Chuck,

Which menu item is missing, and for what?

I tried finding a list of all the shortcut commands from the Start Menu, but I do not see one anywhere.

For example, I already know by typing "winver", I go directly to the version information screen. When I type "reli", I head straight to the reliability monitor.

With a left pinky Windows key action, these commands can be extremely powerful, yet I suspect they are underutilized by the vast majority of Windows users. Only a few superusers are adept at using them.

Can anyone point me to a list of these commands? Thank you.

Answer:Start Menu Commands

When you click start and begin typing, you are doing a search. Supposedly any valid command should be accessible that way by typing enough of it so search can recognize it and list for you to select if you want. A few examples:

sched = Task Scheduler
pai = Paint
note = Sticky Notes or Notepad
word = Wordpad
cont = Control Center or Control Panel
int = Internet Explorer
file = File Explorer or 7-Zip file manager (for me)
etc. etc. etc.

I must have been using Linux for to long, have run into a mental block with the run commands in Windows XP Pro. There are various commands that can be entered in the run… section of the start menu, regedit etc. The one I would like lets you select start-up programs amongst other things, but I can’t remember what the hell it is.

Hi.
For some reason even though the default program for playing mp3s is Winamp, when i right click on a file the file type commands available are those of Media Player and not those of Winamp. Whatever i have tried, re-install winamp, reclaim file associations through winamp, delete from the registry the mp3 file type etc, made no change.

How can i force XP to display the Winamp commands when i right click on an mp3 file?

When i double click a file it plays in winamp.

Thanks.

Hi guys,

I'm working on a computer and currently removing some viruses. I noticed a couple things:

1) Trying to save to certain locations will come up with a permissions denied error. I tried to unzip a file to the desktop and got a permissions denied error.

2) Typing commands in the start menu goes to search results instead of straight to that item. For example, typing "control" should bring up the control panel but it goes to search instead. Same with msconfig, appwiz.cpl, etc, etc.

Any ideas on repairing this without a reformat?

Edit: the guy did mention he upgraded from vista to windows 7, maybe i just need to repair permissions somehow?

Go to Folder Options => File Types
Scroll down to 'Folder' and click the Advanced button
You will see 2 operations listed. The one in bold is the default.
Click 'open' and click the 'Set Default' button. Be aware that this will change the default action for all folders. But I suppose you can change it back if you want.

Hello,

I need help with my start menu order. In the Taskbar and Start Menu Items dialogue under Customize Start Menu I have *Sort All Menu Items by name* unchecked.

Regardless of this, my All Programs start menu will not maintain the order that I choose to put it in. I run the box as an administrator and I am the only user of the computer and have no other user accounts other than the one Administrator account that I use and the Guest account, which is turned off.

The folders in the Start Menu seem to maintain their modified order that I arrange them in until I delete a random icon in one of the folders or use Add/Remove programs to remove a program or install a program that adds an icon or folder to the start menu.

At this point, all folders and icons go back to alphabetical order. Then I have to painstakingly drag each folder back to the order I wish it to be in and then open each folder and rearrange all the icons inside each individual folder back to an order that I prefer.

They also rearrange themselves on every restart of the computer.

I have had to resort to numbering the folders like this:

to prevent them from reverting to alphabetical ordering.

I can't tell you how many times I have had to drag and drop all the folders, and all the icons within those folders, back to a position that I like having them in. The folders, when they are numbered as they are in the photo above, do not reorganize themselves but, the icons within the folders stil... Read more

Hello,

I normally organize and rename the shortcuts in the start menu (in the folder ...\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu) to shorter or more memorable names. However, my start menu is not in alphabetical order anymore.

For example: I've renamed "Adobe Photoshop CC 2015" to "Photoshop" and "Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2015" to "Premiere". So, I expect that the programs would be listed under "P" in my start menu, but, they're still on top of my menu, renamed, under the "A" letter.

This process has always worked, until now. Is there something I can do to fix it?

Thank you in advance,

Answer:Start menu not in alphabetical order

Hi, I think the problem is that the Win 10 start menu does not behave in the same way as traditional start menus in respect of legacy folder-based menus we're used to.

Many of my 'normal' entries in my start menu aren't even present in the Win 10 start menu. Subfolders (E.g. the folder created by a program I install containing its shortcuts) aren't even shown in the Win 10 start menu.. all the shortcuts under one letter in the start menu are linear- extracted from their folders producing this sort of absurdity:
That's why I use Classic Shell- which works as I expect.

The Windows Photo Viewer will not display photos in the order they are sorted by Windows Explorer.
This is not referring to the slide show feature, just the forward and back arrows.
The only order pictures can be viewed is by name despite Windows Explorer being set at view by date, ascending.
I have repaired Microsoft Live Essentials, uninstalled and reinstalled but the issue remains.
This is also not an issue with photo tags or photo names.
Windows Explorer sorts as selected but click a picture in the middle to view, click the forward arrow and instead of the next date picture being viewed, the next name picture is viewed.

Answer:Windows Photo Viewer; sorting order not the same as view order

Hi!

I upgraded to Windows 10 recently as well, I have the same problem and I also have a solution. However, I do not know, if it is ideal. :-)

What is obviously missing is an entry in the registry called DropTarget. This entry tells Windows Photo Viewer to display the images in the sorting order of the folder Photo Viewer got called from.

Non-solution:
I saw that at least in my registry there is a DropTarget defined in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\photoviewer.dll\shell\open\DropTarget. From the name of the key and from reading the docs this looks as if it would be applied to all calls to this program, but -if that actually is the case- for me this entry does not work. It has been there (at least) after my Windows 10 upgrade, also the "Clsid"="{FFE2A43C-56B9-4bf5-9A79-CC6D4285608A}" seems to be fine, but it does not do the job.

Solution:
For me, this problem was present for jpg and png files, but not for bmp, dib, gif, jfif and what else can be opened with Windows Photo Viewer. To fix this, I have added the following to the Windows Registry:

Code:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile\shell\open\DropTarget]

Hi,

I am trying to arrange the tiles in the Start Menu in the order I want but it is impossible. If I move one to, let's say, the left, the other tiles around will also move in any direction.

It is a headache, more like a brain game, to arrange them in the order you want.

I just want to have my programs in the order I want in the Start Menu.

Does anyone know if this is possible at all?

This is about the right side of the start menu where Control Panel, Administrative Tools, etc are. Not the All Programs menu.

I recently upgraded from XP and am annoyed that the Recent Items is mid way down as I frequently use that and it is kind of hidden in that long list. I'm looking for a way to move that to the top like it was on XP. I searched tutorials using "start menu" but couldn't find anything but perhaps that isn't the right term for this area. I figure there must be some place in the registry where these items are ordered.

thanks

I'd like to delete one (part of a product/appl that I want to keep but which has no option to config this that I know of) and move the other one up closer to top...
Anyone know where this is stored?
BTW, I'm used to tweaking Registry so if there, that's fine.

Answer:Delete or changing order of entries in Context Menu?

To Remove right click entries from the context menus

start run regedit

Now, go to the following sub-folders and delete references to programs you know have set up offending context menu entries. For example, in my system under [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers] I found the key Symantec.Norton.Antivirus.IEContextMenu which I deleted. The first volley in the war against the invasion of my menus by Symantec. Here are all the places you should look in:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\OpenWithList]

When you're done, you should see the default context menus devoid of the added rubbish.

Hello,

This will be my fist post on this forum.

I've recently come across a weird dissatisfaction with the ordering of the items (links) found in the Desktop toolbar shown via the task bar.

Until today, the menu listed the encompassing links in a particular order, and I happened to accidentally move one folder from my desktop. Once that happened, the order changed for only that one menu item/link.

This threw me off in an OCD sense due to the fact that now there was this random folder hanging off to the bottom of the menu not being grouped with other directory links, which were all grouped together.

This then started to get me thinking if I could change how the items were grouped on the menu itself by altering any toolbar configuration, but alas, there wasn't any such option.

Instead, I decided to remove the toolbar from the taskbar and add it again to see if it did anything.

Lo and behold, it did, but now the order was out of wack again.

The folder items were grouped together as I remembered them to be in the menu, but now the other menu links (representative of the other desktop links/files/etc) were out of order.

So, my question is now: how is the toolbar ordering the desktop links/files/etc? Is this modifiable at all?

I was under the impression that it was using the date modification time to order the items on the menu, but now I'm not so sure after what I did to the folder earlier. I didn't even delete it, and simply moved it inside another folder by accident.

Hello,

Often times when I want to rename a file, I hit "delete" by mistake. I was wondering if there is a way to move the delete option up, so that it is not next to rename? I have tried a few context menu editors, but they do not seem to have rename or delete as options to play around with. Please see attached.

Thanks!

Answer:Change order of Context Menu entries for folders or files

Sorry, I can only suggest a workaround. Instead of Rename, I always select the last item in the list, Properties. I use this to rename.

I use Fireworks 8 - should be similar in other versions

In Fireworks-
Go to Edit menu > Keyboard Shortcuts...
The top dialog box is "Current Set"
Drop down menu should offer option to reset standard Macromedia shortcuts to Photoshop shortcuts

Worth a try anyway...

Hi Guys,

I recently tried to install Linux Ubuntu but it didin't work well. So I deleted all the partitions and made a clean windows 7 install. Everything works just fine. Before the windows installation there was a weird bootloader starts at first. Here's the picture. After I installed windows I looked at my bios settings and in the boot menu I still had Ubuntu. I used recovery cd and did a console command which is "bootsect /nt60 all". But it is still there. How can I delete this without doing any formatting, reinstalling.

Answer:My Bios Boot Order Menu Has An Item Called "Ubuntu"

Hello ExpDisease,

are you sure the screenshot is from your BIOS? It looks to me like a bootloader left over from Ubuntu that's running before Windows 7's own bootloader.

You might try the bootsect /nt60 all /mbr command (with the added /mbr option) to actually rewrite the MBR as well, but I'm not sure that'll really do the job.

Just to get a better picture of things, could you also take a snapshot of your (maximized) Disk Management window and post it here?

While working offline, my Dell Latitude 131L goes into hibernate. When I restart the laptop it opens to a generic "Dell" desktop picture. There is no Start Menu or toolbar. No desktop icons are available. The cursor is in the middle of the screen, but is of no use. I was NOT installing any software or hardware.

I attempted to reboot, same screen appears.

I am able to start in "Safe Mode."

I attempted to use a Restore point, but each time (I tried several dates) it will not take.

I called Dell and we ran a Hardware test (Fn and Power keys), no errors were present.

Update: It loads REAL slow, taking about 15 minutes or more. But then I can not anything. After an hour of loading, I ran Kaspersky and no threats were found.

Restarted and got a blue screen that says
Checking the file System C:
The type of file system is NTSF.
The volume is dirty

Then it does a series of verifications that take a long time.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:XP loads to a generic desktop, no start menu order desktop icons

The following steps will be a good start to resolving the issue. The first thing that you should do is to check that your hard drive is not failing. On a working computer, download the diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's website to create a bootable floppy or CD.Find the brand name of your hard drive. You will find this info on the label of the hard drive (most likely you will have to remove the hard drive from the box to read the label). You will also find sufficient info to identify the drive (the model number) by looking at the hdd code in the BIOS Setup Menu, and then googling the code. Another alternative is to use something like Everest or Belarc Advisor.

I added an another hard drive with win 7 64 installed on it. So I now have 1 hard drive with win 7 32 bit and one with 64 bit (I need booth).
before when I have done this a boot option was automatically created. This time however the only way I can accesses the new drive with Win 64 on it is by going into my bios and manually selecting the drive to boot from. However I did detach the original 32 bit harddrive when I was installing the 64 bit OS to make sure I didn't erase it (as the drives are the same size).
How can I get a boot menu set up so I can pick which drive I want to load.
My motherboard is ASUS P8H61-M LE/USB3

Answer:Trying to set up a boot menu harddrive missing in boot order

I have an ASUS motherboard and during boot-up I get the choice of pressing F8 to select which drive I wish to boot-up from. It may be worth trying this. Alternativly your motherboard manual should tell you. If you do not have a manual you should be able to download one from the ASUS web site.

Run is the equivalent to command line in Windows, so there aren’t any "commands" that I know of that wouldn't be available in the command prompt. For example "progman" is the name of the application Program Manager...the same thing goes for typing in a directory....

The VB user would input this other user's name and message text, then the application would send it via a NET SEND command.

Answer:Windows Commands in VB

You can use a shell command and run just about any exe program. Or you could use the winsock. If everyone is on the same subnet, you could use UDP or if not, then you can use TCP/IP. Microsoft web site shows all of the steps to do both.

I have a program here in the office that I use UDP since we are on the same subnet. I have it set that they put information into an access database, and rather me check it every day, I use the UDP which plays a wav on my computer to alert me that some on just submitted something into my database.

The example on Microsoft, shows a type of instant messanger, where one person types into a window on someone elses computer..

I another Thread in this part of the forum today, I saw this wonderful windows command that I would have loved to have known a long time ago. Thinking about all the things I did not know that would probably be very useful, I did a google search for "useful windows commands". Plenty of hits, just not a real good list(I only looked a few pages in). I was wondering if the very experienced members of the [H]ard|Forum would like to contribute useful commands they have found and used over the years? If you have one you would like to mention; aside from something, such as format C, please add the command(s). Maybe with a short note about what version's of windows the command(s) work in, etc.

HI

Can anyone give me a list of commands that i can use with Run in windows. For example you go Start->Run and then type the command you want to run. I think some commands cannot be accessed from the GUI of windows, like regedit, control userpassword2 etc.

So, if possible can you please tell me every useful commands that i can use with that Run thing in windows.

Thanks

I don't have an exhaustive list, but Regedit can be run from Windows Explorer or a shortcut, I'm not sure what makes you think it can't.

I don't think a complete list of commands has much utility, I'd suggest you learn about the capabilities as you go.

Hello,

I've just set up the Belkin USB hub so I can connect my 500Gb media player / external HDD to the network without having to cart it back and forwards from the TV to the PC.
While the transfer rates are VERY low - (500k-2Mb per sec) it's still ideal for my needs.... with help.

I've got my favourite bittorrent downloader downloading to the main PC then transferring to the external HDD once completed.

What I want is to automate the moving of the downloaded files to the correct folder on the Media drive.

For example:

Check 'C:\downloads' every 5m and transfer any folders that contain .mp3 files to g:\music and any folders containing .avi to the 'g:\films' folder

I've tried the 'at' command in cmd but this wont recognise the G:\ drive as it's a virtual drive on the USB network hub.

Can someone point me at some software or windows commands that can help. Or (most likely) the correct syntax for referring to the virtaul USB drive on the network

Much appreciated.

One thing: having read a great many forums there are always a lot of 'why not just get a...' [insert new piece of hardware here]. Can we skip those please? I want a solution for the hardware that I've got. I know it can do everything that I want, I just don't know how.

Thanks very much

Some phantom (I made that name up) is executing Windows commands (I am using XP). When Windows Live Mail for the Desktop is open, the phantom inevitably closes the program within a half hour (whether I am actively using it or not). Other random commands are also being executed - yesterday a complete copy of a directory and all its subdirectories was made to another location on my hard drive. I lose control of the mouse and the keyboard when the phantom takes over. Esc doesn't work. Often I see the Windows Start function being executed. Sometimes I can use Alt shortcut keys to close a window that was opened by the phantom, but most of the time I cannot. Ctl-Alt-Del usually doesn't work when the phantom takes over, and when it does, I only see the performance screen; I am unable to click a tab to see other screens (such as Applications). Eventually I regain control of the keyboard and the mouse, but sometimes I just regain control of the Windows key and reboot.

I noticed this beginning when I was told by Microsoft that my Hotmail accounts in Outlook Express would need to be changed to look like other POP accounts, AND that they (Microsoft) recommended moving to Windows Live Mail for the Desktop as a replacement for Outlook Express, which I did. It was only after migrating to WLM that this began, but not right away (maybe a month later).

I have implemented McAffee Security Center and run AdAware, but neither has fixed this problem. I hope you can help me.

The fan seems to be working full on/ overtime if anything.I have unplugged from the mains and removed the battery.I'm not sure what else to do- I can't remember how to start in safe mode?Ideally I'd like to access some of my documents to make a copy of them (the laptop is networked so I'm hoping that my PC might still be able to access the laptop's hard drive) then I can call Dell Tech Support tomorrow.Typicaly I did a fair bit of work yesterday and didn't back it up :(If anybody has any suggestions or ideas I would be VERY grateful- thanks!

Answer:Windows loads ok but commands don't work HELP

for safe mode the process is usually continually press F8 during boot up you dont say what your os is and it may be different.johnny

I am running Windows XP Pro on my computer. I was trying to execute a tip of the day thing. I tried this tip but did not work. I am running Windows XP Pro and when I click on Start>Run>type "cmd", hit Enter a window comes up entitled "C:\Windows\system32\command.com" but another window entitled "16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem" also comes up with the following information:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\command.com
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
Then there are two buttons, one for Close and one for Ignore. No matter which one I click on, the windows close.
Why does this come up? Why does this not work on my computer?

Hi,I've an approved RMA for full refund for an X230 that I'd purchased from Depot. The restocking fee was waived as I'd ordered another X230 (better EPP deal).I shipped back the unopened X230 and Lenovo acknowledged the receipt of the laptop on Feb 5. And since then there has been no update on my refund. I was told it would take 6 business days for the refund to be posted back to my account. Now it's over 2 weeks and when I contacted post sales support - this is the reply I got from them: *************Hi,We regret to inform you that i am unable to get any information on this order, I am still working on your order. Once we get the information on the refund i will keep you updated on the same For further assistance please feel free to email me back and i will be glad to assist you Regards *************So what are my options now. An answer like "i am unable to get any information on this order" from customer care themselves doesn't really inspire confidence with Lenovo. The second X230 that I'd ordered, has issues with the IPS display having a yellow tint and the touchpad being super jumpy. Had sent it to their repair center who unfortunately were not able to see the problems at first but later accepted the problem with the touchpad alone and they're getting the laptop re-imaged. Display is as designed according to them. They're sending it back now. Will wait and see. If I still see the display problem, will get it returned. Thank you Lenovo, for that amazing buyi... Why does it say that I will receive the laptop 2 weeks from now when it says that I should expect it within 1-3 days?

Answer:Dell site says XPS 15 gets delivered in 1-3 days, the order date for my order is 2 weeks from now...

Generally when that happens there has been a burst of orders, or there is a part on back order and the sales site hasn't been updated yet.  The delivery times are just estimates and could be sooner or later depending on various conditions.

This is my Order Number: 2FFVLJI've always owned a Thinkpad for the past 10 years and am a staunch Thinkpad fan.  The R60 and Z60m have been reliable and faithful companions.  I have been recommending Thinkpad to my colleagues and friends.  Hence when I needed a new laptop, I went directly to lenovo's site and ordered a T510 (Web Special) on 4th August 2010 using a valid credit card.  For two days the status was "in process".  On Aug 6th, I was unable to login in usng the cust no and order no to see the status.  When I called the sales customer service, I was informed that the order was cancelled from lenovo's side.  They pointed me to the credit card department for further information.  When I called the credit card department, they claimed information mismatch as the reason for the cancellation but they could not point out what exactly was the mismatch.  I can assure you that the card is valid.  Currently I'm not able to place another order for the same model from lenovo's site as it is no longer available.  This is very regretful as I was really looking forward to getting my laptop of choice.  I tried calling the sales dept but they are not available as it is weekend now (everyone needs a break )  So I have emailed them for help.  I'm yet to get a response.  This has been a nail biting experience.  I'm anxiously waiting for the response from the sales dept.   Will it be possibl... Anyone know of say an alphabetical reference, or any online reference to all EXE's and COM's for Windows 2000 Pro or XP Pro, so that the applications can be launched from command prompt without having to navigate to them??Windows is a candy shell over the command prompt, so there has to be direct commands to jump to where you want without having to navigate through the GUI. Maybe not everywhere, but I am sure there are quite a few??Also interested in any switches that may be a Windows M.U.F ( Microsoft Undocumented Feature )I have the Guide to M.U.F's printed out for DOS 6.22 and earlier that can be found here if interrested (  http://chanae.walon.org/pub/DOS/muf16.txt  ) ...But I am sure Microsoft has added some for the Windows OS...I discovered these that I regularly use:Control.exe  = Opens Control Panel (Nice quick launch vs navigating there ) Notepad.exe = Notepad ( Favorite Batch & HTML editor ) Calc.exe = Opens Calculator ( quicker than navigating ) Thanks for your CIN (INPUT) on this ... Answer:Commands to launch Windows Apps from CMD Prompt

Do you use the Run feature in Windows XP? For most, this feature remains unused (or rarely used). Why is that? Well, First off nearly all of the Run Commands Correspond to a particular Control Panel Item or a Utility, Tool or Task that can be accessed through Windows. There are, however, tools and utilities that I bet you never knew you had that can be accessed through the Run feature. The main reason most people don't use the Run feature is because they don't know the Commands. So...To Access??. "or: what Microsoft forgot to implement in the explorer."
The StExBar provides many useful commands for your everyday use of Windows explorer. And you can add as many custom commands on your own as you like.
The commands are not just available from the toolbar, but also via hotkeys and via a context menu!
Have you ever needed to open a console window while you were using the explorer? And to have that console already set to the directory you're showing in explorer right now? Well, StExBar provides that with one simple mouseclick. There's also a hotkey defined for this: simply press Ctrl-M to open the console.
A 'lightweight' console is also available. Simply enter the command you like to execute into the edit box on the right of the StExBar and hit enter. The command will be executed in the system console.
Have you ever needed to have the name or full path of one or more files in another application? Ctrl-C doesn't work here, that won't copy the file path but the file itself. StExBar comes to the rescue. It provides two commands, one to copy all selected file/foldernames to the clipboard, the other copies the whole paths of all selected items. To make it even more easier to use this, a hotkey is defined Ctrl-Shift-C which copies the selected paths.
Creating new folders is a common task in explorer. But to actually do that, you have to right-click on a folder background, choose "New" from the context menu, wait until the submenu finally appears... Read more

This is what happens when i type in for example "cmd", or "paint", any shortcut i type in does not show up.

and when i click on one either of the things, i get this:

Answer:Can't enter shortcuts/commands when using windows search bar.

Found the solution on Search box in start menu does not work
This is the fix to be precise.

Quote:
I ran into the same problem over the past couple days with Windows 7 RC and finally dug into it some more.
1. End Task on EXPLORER.EXE from Task Manager.

2. Start the Registry Editor

3. Look for the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\{EF87B4CB-F2CE-4785-8658-4CA6C63E38C6}\TopViews\{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}

4. Rename the key so it looks like the following:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\{EF87B4CB-F2CE-4785-8658-4CA6C63E38C6}\TopViews\{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}.BACKUP

5. From Task Manager click on File | New Task (Run) and type EXPLORER.EXE and hit return.

6. Now try your search from the Start Menu again.

If the above process doesn't work for you, you can always put it back the way it was by reversing the process above.

In installing ubuntu I failed to partition where it would reside into 3 partitions and screwed everything up.In trying to make changes all I get are error messages, doesn't matter what you enter. These blogs will work as long as you can access windows and since ubuntu won't allow that,is there a simple tool that I can use to scrub my drive by overiding ubuntu, or is the only way out to have Best Buy or some such do it? I am running win 7 pro with fat 32 x86. I get nowhere on the terminal line with the sudo get-apt commands as it asks for my password as administrator and the typical error message is 'an error occurred while performing an operation'. I even tried AOMEI which a blogger had mentioned but with the same dead end result.Any suggestions would be truly appreciated.

Answer:Ubuntu not user friendly with windows commands.

Hi there
Not sure how you got the problem -- Ubuntu / Debian / Linux Mint (all similar) have very easy graphical installs - however for help on installing Ubuntu I'd suggest you put your question over at LinuxQuestions.org

If you need help on "Unhosing a system" then by all means pose your question here.

The easiest way is to use the Windows recovery disk to repair MBR / boot - but you need to be careful if you are using a GPT drive and UEFI boot. You need to provifr more info as to EXACTLY what you want to do --I'm not sure what your current problem is.

Cheers

Hello, I hope somebody could help me with this. Everytime windows starts I get several pop up windows (once I click ok on the first one another window pops up and so on) saying that it can't find the following commands in the registry:

Search:
C:/ Documents'
Run:
C:/ Documents'
Search:
'and'
Run:
'and'
Search:
'Settings/Winxp/Application'
Run:
'Settings/Winxp/Application'
Search:
Data/Adobe/Manager.exe
Run:
Data/Adobe/Manager.exe

Every search and run is a separate pop up window. I think this happened because I got a trojan virus, now removed, but left me these annoying pop up windows every time I start windows. Please help, I would really appreciate it.

Answer:Commands can't be found in registry when windows starts

Hello Bret, Welcome to TSF!

By the sound of it, you still have fragments of that infection left on your computer.

Please read this article? "Having problems with spyware and pop-ups? - First Steps"; follow the instructions very carefully; then, post all the requested logs and information; as instructed, in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum.
(Simply, click on the coloured links to be re-directed.)

Please ensure that you create a new thread in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum; not back here in this one.
(Please change the new Thread Subscription to ?Instant Email Notification? so that you receive an email as soon as a reply is posted,)

When carrying out The 5 Steps, if you cannot complete any of them for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed.
However,it is extremely important to make mention of the fact that you could not complete any of the steps in your post to The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you with other workarounds.

Once done, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are usually very busy; one of them will answer your request as soon as they can.

Good Luck with it.

Kind Regards,

So, I got a new DELL XPS 13 last night and on my other computer, I used to do alt+164 to get the "" but on this computer it does not work. I also tried Ctrl +~+n and that did not work either.
Is there a setting I have to activate? I already have the "Spanish Keyboard" installed but I don't think that makes a difference...I'd just like to know the list of keyboard commands, thank you!

Answer:What are the keyboard commands for Spanish letters on Windows 10?

Not sure! I just tried in the address bar of FILE EXPLORER and had no problems with alt+164; same in Word 2016 and NotePad.

Hi folks!

I have had no luck getting Windows 10 Pro to shut down properly. I?ve tried every reported solution on every thread I?ve found, with no success. Perhaps you could help? Is there a way to get a log file of what goes on during shutdown?

Intel i7 3770-k
Asus p8z77-v le plus
2x GTX 680
16GB RAM
Samsung 830 SSD
Seagate 3TB HDD
Seagate 350GB HDD
5+1 USB2 PCI card
1200W PSU
Dual boot Windows 10 / Linux Mint 17.3

Restart is slow, but succeeds eventually.
Shutdown plays ?Shutting down? screen, screens go black, displays give the ?no signal? prompt, but MBD, GPU, and case fans remain powered (Hard drives can be heard spinning down).

Oddity: If I hard power off and boot up in Linux Mint, the OS reports that Windows is hibernated and refuses to mount NTFS partitions. This remains the case even AFTER I turn off hibernation; however rebooting and booting Linux instead of Win10 gives no such issue. Mint performs shutdown quickly and completely, which suggests to me that it?s not a hardware issue.

Here?s a history of what I?ve tried so far. At each bullet point I tried standard shutdown, holding shift while clicking shutdown in the Win+X menu, and using the command line (shutdown ?f ?t 0).

- Issue first observed after upgrade form Win7, assumed to be upgrade issue.
- Erased SSD, reinstalled Windows 10 from USB drive (made with Microsoft Media Creation Tool), installed latest drivers from Asus / NVIDA.
- chckdsk /f on all NTFS partitions. All pass.
- Turn off hibernation... Read more

We have been working with a developer to adapt a desktop application for our own use. The application is written in Delphi.
Among other things, the application can initialize USB devices using the standard Windows format command and then load data to it.
When attempting to format multiple devices concurrently (say 4 or more - up to 16 even), we discovered that both the application and Windows would become non-responsive to the point that you could not cancel the app via Task Manager or even shut down the
computer.

But this would only happen on some
of our computers. The problem does not occur on computers running Windows 10 (so far) and I also have a smaller Windows 7 Home Premium computer where the problem does not occur.

Here are the computers where the problem is easily recreated:
1) Windows 7 Professional, i5-6400, 2.70 Ghz, 16GB RAM, tower
2) Windows 7 Professional, i7-6700K, 4.00 Ghz, 32GB RAM, tower
3) Windows 8.1 Professional, i5-5200U, 2.20 Ghz, 8GB RAM, laptop

The problem seems to be isolated to concurrent format commands. When it happens, you can see from the command prompt windows that the format command launches that the format command actually completes successfully, but the command prompt window never closes
(and you cannot close it manually either).
I was able to recreate the problem outside of the application removing it from the equation altogether. I created the following BAT file. If I execute it on any of the above listed compute... Read more
