Power light is orange and won't boot (can someone move to hardware forum, sorry)

Question: Power light is orange and won't boot (can someone move to hardware forum, sorry)

Have a Gateway desktop computer about 3-5 yrs old (no model number on back). Computer is constantly left on and about 3 weeks ago, tried to use it (still on) and it saw the orange light and thought it was just in sleep mode or standby and shook the mouse to "wake it up" and nothing happened. We've since swapped the memory, video card and checked the batteries...nothing happened, still won't boot up. Memory was fine and worked in another computer.

Any suggestions or thoughts?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everyone,  I am facing this problem from the past few days in my Lenovo G510. Whenever I plug in the charger for charging the laptop, both the power light and the battery light with orange color, starts flashing and the laptop stops charging.  The color of the battery light changes to orange, even if my laptop is nearly 50% charged. Can't figure out, what is the problem? Any help will be appreciated!

I have a Dell Dimension E510 that as of yesterday, won't power up anymore. The power light blinks orange and the computer does nothing when the power button is pushed or held in. It's about 16 months old and is out of warranty, so I'm trying to diagnose the problem myself.

I did some searching on the internet and found that this seems to be a common issue on these Dells, sort of a long term infant mortality issue. The most common causes seem to be a bad PSU, MOBO or a shorted USB input.

I've done some diagnostic checks/testing so far and am now stuck. Here's what I know.

- The USB ports don't appear to be shorted. I also disconnected the connector for the USB (which includes the power switch :banghead and it doesn't change any of the results that follow.
- I removed the power supply and jumped Power On (terminal 14, green wire) of the main ATX connector to ground. The fan comes on and all voltages (3.3, 5 and 12v)check out, including around 5.35v at Power Good (terminal 8, gray wire).
- With the power supply back in and everything connected, there is only 3.3mv at Power Good. As I understand it, this would normaly point to a bad power supply; however, all of the voltages check out when the unit is disconnected from everything.

Is is still possible that the power supply is bad, or is it more likely (or definitely) that the MOBO is the culprit.

Any help, including suggestions for additional testing is greatly appreciated.

i have the optiplex gx620 mini tower and i opened it too clean the fan from dust did that and when assembled it back together it wouldnt turn on and the power and mother board turned orange can someone help me with a step by step process on how to fix it and if i cant how can i get the stuff i saved on there off the hard drive

Answer:orange power light

Hi HitDat,
Thanks for writing to us. Do you see green light on the PSU at the rear side? Ensure the power cable is plugged in properly as well as the PSU connector on the motherboard is tightly secured. Re-seat the memory modules one by one and try with one module at a time and check. Regarding the data on hard drive, we would suggest to take the drive to a local store and get it backed up, or you can try the HD on another machine if possible and if it recognizes, you can back up the same.

1. Plug the computer into a power strip that has an on/off switch. Turn the power strip on. Press the computer power on button to start as normal, but after after one second turn off the power strip switch just long enough for the fans on the computer to slow down, but the amber computer led doesn't turn off and then turn the power strip switch back on. Computer should start and run fine. Computer typically can be shut down for up to 5 minutes and restarted normally--any longer and you have to sue the power strip power switch routine again.Click to expand...

My Dimension 8200 turned off suddenly with no warning today. It just..died. Annoyed, I turned it back on--tried to at least. The fan still whirled, the CD-ROM drive still spun. The power button, though, glowed a hellish orange where green once shone. Then it sat there and nothing else happened. It didn't boot. The optical mouse light didn't flash. The keyboard lights didn't flash. Nothing.

This has happened before, so I wasn't too concerned. Last time, I panicked for a few minutes and it irrationally and suddenly came back to life as if nothing happened. That was about a year ago or so. This time, though, it's been two hours already and no miracle.

I've read through several threads about similar problems here and at Dell, but I don't want to believe that my motherboard or power supply is gone. Somehow, there MUST be another way. Sob. If anyone has some desperate advice for a desperate guy, please don't hesitate to grace me with a reply. Thank you so much.

Hello everyone this is my first post here. I own a dell optiplex 745 with a core2duo 1.8 Ghz processor, 2 gb RAM and have also added an XFX HD 5550 to it. I have been using it since almost two years, and it hasn't caused me many problems except this blinking orange power light.
The problem is just this that the desktop just won't start. All that happens is that the power light just blinks orange. This has happened to it almost four times in the last two years, and the problem has seemingly resolved itself the last four times. Well it would go something like this: I would turn off the PC normally, and the next time i started it all i would get is this blinking light. Then after a couple of days or hours, I would try again and it work as if nothing had happened. But this time it happened four days ago. I turned it off, then switched it on but i got the orange light. Since then, I have tried so many times but this time I fear something much bigger has happened.
Now I have done a decent amount of work in trying to figure out whats the problem. The key thing to note is that its not my PSU (yes i used a different one). Does this mean it's my motherboard which is causing the problem? Or is it something else?
I did a bit of digging up on the internet for the same problem, and I saw one which said something about a faulty power on button       http://www.instructables.com/id/Fix-the-Dell-OLOD-Orange-Light-Of-Death/

Answer:Optiplex 745 Blinking Orange Power Light

According to the Dell manual this is either a power supply or motherboard problem.  It doesn't detail how to further troubleshoot.
Do you get any diagnostic lights? or beeps when you power it on.
But, you can remove the video card to see if the symptom changes.  If not, reseat the memory as a next step.
If neither of these help you are back to either the replacement power supply or a motherboard problem.

Often when I power down my laptop by closing the lid (haven't tried it by actually shutting it off) and go to bed, when I wake up I hear a clicking noise, and the power LED is flashing very rapidly blue and orange.  Note that this is not the battery light, this is the other one.  This seems to happen whether or not the laptop is plugged in. Searching Google, all I find is people talking about the battery light, but the battery light doesn't flash.  I'm hoping someone can link me to a guide to see what the different flashing lights mean. Thank you!-jason

A few months ago I bought a Dell 4700 off of a friend for $30. It worked great up until a few weeks ago. Everything was normal, I turned it off, but then the next day it would not turn on. Instead of the two normal green lights in the front, there was one orange one. Not blinking. I tried removing cards, RAM, CD and DVD Drives, and even replacing the hard drive. Nothing worked. I now believe it is either the motherboard or power supply causing trouble, but as much as I would like to, I barely have enough money for one. So I really need to know what's wrong before I spend any money. Any ideas?

Yesterday, I was just sitting there watching TV at my computer desk, with the computer on, next thing I know- I look over and the computer was shutdown. I didn't know why, so then I go to turn it on, it will not turn on- and the power button, that should be green, starts blinking orange. I'm not sure what the problem is, I think something might be dead. I have been getting a message that says "Alert! System Battery Voltage Low" for about 2 years, I'm not sure if that would be it or not (Maybe that died? Would that do it? I don't know).

When I try to turn it on, I can see the fan and stuff turn on for about half a second, then everything just turns off except for the mobo light and the orange blinking light. I've tested my brothers working power supply in mine, so I know that mine still works because that didn't fix it. I've taken the graphics card out, that didn't do it either. I don't know what else I could do, please help somebody, I'm lost without my computer... Thank you.

I first logged out of my computer and came back and I noticed an orange light on the power button. I shut it of and turn it back on about two times with the same results of an orange light. I then shut of the the extension that houses 10 plugs. When I turned on the extension I turned on the computer the power button didn't give off a blue light or orange light. The VGA cable, mouse, keyboard, Ethernet cable are all plugged in. I later removed all the connects to the computer gave it a minute and plugged it all back in. There is a solid green light on the back under the power cable. The fans turn on there is noise coming from inside the computer a soft humming and light fan from the back of the computer. But the power button will not turn on. The monitor light is orange and says "No Input signal Input 2,Go to Power Save." When I switch to input 1 it reads "Cable Disconnected Go to Power Save." What internal issue could this be?

If I want to turn it on, the power light turns into an orange dot...

If its caused by the emty RTC Battery, Where can I order a new one (In Europe?)

Answer:Satellite Pro 2100 - Power light turns into an orange dot

Hi

Normally this has nothing to do with a empty RTC battery. In this case you would only get an error message about a low CMOS battery or something else but the notebook would boot properly.

In your case I assume it?s a hardware problem. Have you already tried removing the battery and AC/DC adaptor for some hours or over night? Sometimes this helps?

Otherwise it would be great to get professional help form an authorized service provider. They can diagnose the notebook and exchange the faulty hardware parts.

I have an X31.  My laptop is behaving as though it is running on AC power when it is not (ie. Charge light is on, power management settings in windows recognizes it as running on AC power).  Battery will not recharge, though windows power management says it is recharging -- it does this regardless of whether the battery is in or not.  Eventually, the battery died completely and computer could no operate without AC (date an time settings would even reset when unplugged). On the advice of a computer repair store and forums with people of similar problems, I purchased a new battery.  This did not fix the problem.  The new battery is able to operate on what little power it holds from factory, but computer is still behaving as though it is plugged in when it is not.   If the battery is not the problem, what else could it be?  Worried about motherboard. Please advise. Kolyn

Answer:Battery/power issue (orange light stays on while not plugged in)

Welcome to the forum! The charging circuit on your machine's planar has been damaged. If you're handy enough, you can open up the machine and start looking for a blown fuse... As for date and time resetting, you need a new BIOS/CMOS battery, they're under $10 on eBay. If that fails to resolve the issue, you have another motherboard-related problem. Good luck.

I have an Inspiron 3650 i3 desktop pc that is a few years old and seldom used. When not in use it is in sleep mode.
Yesterday i tried taking it out of sleep mode, with no luck, and noticed the power button light was solid orange. After a few tries I hard reset the pc and it would not boot up completely. The fans come on and the harddrive sounds like its working but i get no video and the power button remained solid orange. After troubleshooting from several forums i ended up disconnecting everything from the motherboard and taking out the battery then after replacing it and trying to boot with just the cpu fan plugged in. same result, solid orange power button. The PSU seems to be working fine after troubleshooting it so im thinking its either the processor or mobo that has gone bad. Any suggestions?

Answer:Lenovo B590 Laptop Power Light Flashing Orange

Good day and welcome to the community.

Please have a look at page 7 of your B590 User Guide:
http://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/b490_b43xx_b590_ug_en.pdf
for a description of the color / blink 'codes'.

Basically, a slow orange blink means that the battery is between 5 and 20% charged (and charging). It should change to a slow green blink at 20%.

Hope this helps a bit.

Answer:dell inspiron one 2205 power light stays orange

Check out the reset given in the second link at #2, then the screen as per #3. If it is still the same then responses #1 and #2 (first link) suggest possible items that might need replacing. However, without examining the Inspiron it is difficult to be absolutely certain so it could be expensive just buying things in order to find out. This would need to be weighed against invoking the professional who can look at the unit and should be able to give more concrete guidance. Most things can be repaired but it all boils down to cost. Hi there,

I have a Tecra m9 laptop and when I try to power it on, it flashes with an orange light in this sequence:

6 short blinks, 1 long blink, 1 short blink, a gap, and then it repeats.

Does anyone know what the problem is?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Answer:Tecra M9 - no power up, orange light error code sequence

What you see is blinking code. The blinking LED provides an error code. Short means 0 and long means 1.

Hexadecimal code can be ?read? by service partner. When the microcontroller detects some problem with power supply the blinking code will be sent. Unfortunately you cannot do anything alone. Contact nearest service partner in your country and ask for help.

All you can try at the moment is to remove battery and start notebook with AC power supply only.

ok, so i have a DELL DIMENSION E521. It will not boot up, however it sounds like it is as i can hear fans. The status light on the motherboard is orange, as is the light on the desktop casing. This is all that happens, the monitor, mouse, keyboard and speakers do not power up at all.

This started happening 5 months ago, however iv'e managed to get around it... id turn the power off/on constantly (rather frustrating) in hope that it'll power up and the light will turn green. This worked a few times, sometimes turning back on much sooner then expected. Needless to say, when it does happen to boot i leave it on as long as i can. ( 29 days at one point) Also, when it does happen to boot up, everything works perfect and i have no problems going about my computer-shinaniagans. You'd think there was no problem at all. Which confuses me, if something was wrong inside surely it would affect using the computer?

Following previous advice i replaced the PSU with an identical dell branded one. This solved nothing. Everything was just the same. I've also removed hardware trying to pin point the problem, again solving nothing. I even removed battery in vein.

So here i am. I must have attempted booting my PC up to 200 times yesterday! Whilst it could happen to turn on if i keep at it.... I'd rather try figure out the actual problem. I also would like to remain sane!

Thanks for reading, any help would be much appriciated x

Greetings,

I purchased my Toshiba Satelight l775 brand new 7 months ago, this is so crazy. It wont power on, i use the laptop plugged to adapter 4 to 8 hours a day, then the laptop goes unused and unplugged for 16 to 20 hours a day.

This is my 3rd laptop, i know i've put more strain on the previous two (HP and Acer). I've never had a laptop go out on me this quick, even that $300 acer laptop went through more strain and never went out in the 15 months i had it.

My backup laptop is a 4 year old HP, i've had it for 4 years, its been dropped several times, used and abused still going! i just had to upgrade ram and hard drive. But, this Toshiba! she was so beautiful when I saw her!

I've never dropped her, never spilled anything on her, so why is she putting me through this stress at a bad time???

A bad time because even though i'm under warranty, i'm going on vacation in 2 days!!! I need her, i'm not trying to take my old HP that came out in 2008.

I can't afford to send my Toshiba off for 2 weeks, not right now.

Today, my virus software was doing its typical scheduled scan, i didn't have the laptop charging, because i was off of work, so when i'm off the laptop gets used more and charged more. I look at the laptop and its off, i just figured, O....my battery died, let me plug in the adapter and do some reading. Well nothing ever happened. 8 hours later, i've been working on this for over 8 hours, i've searched all over google, many forums, none ... Read more

So is this a computer problem or a power cord problem?

Answer:Satellite M110 - Orange light flickers when I push the power button

Hi becks88,

Sounds like a serious hardware problem... Can you start the notebook without AC/DC adaptor or is the adaptor charging the battery?

Try also removing the AC/DC adaptor and battery for one hour at least. After this connect both again and try to start the notebook.

In worst case you need professional help from an authorized service provider? :(

I have a Actiontec gt701-wg from Qwest. Just recently, whenever I reconnect my modem, the power light would stay orange and nothing else would light up. It can take anywhere between 5-15 minutes of plugging and unplugging the power cord for the other lights to light up.

I had called Qwest Technical support and the tech told me it's a modem problem. He told me to leave my modem upside down for 30 minutes to see if the problem is fixed. He said if that does not work then I should get a new modem. I tried that method and it does not work.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi everybody,
I recently inherited an unused PC from work. It's an Optiplex 780 with a faulty power supply.
I replaced the power supply with a working one from an old Optiplex 740 and also had to buy an standard ATX 24 pin to mini ATX 24 pin cable in order to use the 740' PSU in my Optiplex 780.
I have plugged in the power cord (but no mouse & keyboard because I don't have any USB keyboard available) and I expected the computer to show DELL logo as well as on screen POST messages during power up but instead I can see the following :
1) Power button in orange color. No blinking. : according to service manual it means PSU is probably OK and PC has reach booting stage 2.
2) 1,2 & 4 green diagnostic lights are on. This combination (1,2,4) is not listed in service manual so I have no idea on the possible kind of error.
Any suggestions about the possible error and how to fix it?
Kind regards,
Beltrixx

Hello!  I would unplug everything go into the computer and unplug any cards you have like graphics card and network cards etc. Also unplug your HDD and Optical Drives and plug them all back in and see if that clears it.  I looked at the manuals you did and just combined 1,2 and just 4.

Hi,
I have an old Optiplex GX240 that had its power supply break, I recently got another power supply from a different computer. The Power supply is working however there is an orange light on the motherboard and power button that doesn't flash. The ABCD lights on the back of the computer are also not lit.

Answer:Orange Light On Power Button and Motherboard - Dell Optiplex GX240

GX240 requires specific NON PFC power supply.  This unit is 16 years old now and has 512 meg ram of the PC133 variety.   A newer model like an optiplex GX620 or better is still viable.  This system is TOO OLD and TOO Slow to be of any use.

Recently I replaced my shared graphics card with a dedicated graphics card. I have a dell dimension 9100 p4 w/ 4gb ddr2. Now when I go to turn the computer on it will blink orange for several seconds to several minutes - in one case as long as an hour - before it boots up. I have read that this would be a mobo or psu failure, however I dont understand how that could be if it does eventually boot up. Any insight would be appreciated.

Did you clean off the old drivers before you put the new GPU in? You will also want to disable the integrated graphics adapter in the BIOS.

Hi guysI am wondering if anyone can help me please. I know nothing about computers, but have had my Dell Demension 5051 for over ten years. Running on windows XP.  The only reason I have not upgraded, is because I only ever use word, Picture it 7 and presto Page Manager. Obvious.y you guys know these the last two are now obsolete and I have heard will not work on new comps.I simple cannot be without them and so desperately rely on this comp. a few months back, it would not boot and the signal push button start, which should go green and boot when pressed, started blinking continously orange. I turned it off and back on several times. But nothing. A couple of days later, by change I tired again and it booted. I removed everything I no longer need to an external drive, because I am aware I do not have a lot of memory. I ran a cleaning programme and CC cleaner, deleted all history.  The comp continued to work with no problem starting for a few months, then last week it started to blink orange again.I have read and researched this problem and it all points to the errrr PSU unit. But I am confused as to why it comes on intermittently.  I have braved at 75 years old to remove the housing and the bios (I think) battery replacing it with a new one as it has never been changed. This made no difference.I have removed all leads, plugs and power externally, I am not brave enough to touch the inside apart from the battery, and that frightened a few years from my limited lif... I bought a Dell Dimension 8400 last year and it's great up to a point.
Occasionaly it will refuse to boot and will just display an orange flashing light on the box. I then have to hold the power button on to power off completely.
It does this when I haven't used it for a few days, when I've just used it for a few hours and other random times.
It also sometimes just dies when I am using it - sometimes after a few hours, sometimes after a longer time. It will then go into refuse to boot mode as above.
I try and boot again and after a seemingly random number of times, usually as I'm about to hurl it out of the window it will boot up quite happily. It does not perfom chkdsk or any other diagnostics at this time.
I have scanned with AVG virus scan - no viruses. I have used adaware and Spybot remover so the machine is clean of spyware.
I have used Dell's hardware diagnostic software and the machine appears to be clean.
Is there anything else I can try please??????

Here's a quote from another post of mine. Please follow the directions in it and let us know what error messages that you find.Next, please go to Start...Control Panel...Administrative Tools...Event Viewer. Once EventViewer opens there will be 3 categories listed in the left hand pane (Application, Security, andSystem). Please click on each one (in turn) and view the messages for that category in the righthand pane. Look for any error messages around the time of the last problem. Then right click onthe error and select "Properties". In the window that opens will be a text description of theerror - please copy it down and forward it to me. The error text should generally be in the format of 0x0000007a - with the last 2 letters'numberschanging depending upon the error. Also, usually another 4 sets of these numbers follows theerror message - they are important also. Finally, at times there is a file name mentioned withthe error message - please let me know what it is.If there are too many errors to choose from, please let me know and we can proceed a bitdifferently. Also, generally speaking, the usual location for this type of error will be in theSystem category - but there is a possibility that it may be in the other areas. Please do noterase your log files until we're finished troubleshooting this issue.

I just purchased a used comp off ebay (probably a bad mistake) that was suppose to boot to c:. This is a AMD 1800 XP, 128 MB RADEON video card, 60 gig hardrive, CDRW, 52X CD. When I try to boot the computer the monitor light immediately goes from green to orange. The monitor works fine on my other computers. I also noticed that the video card was loose when I first got it out of the box, i secured it but then found out the problem. I have also used a video card out of another one of my comps, nVidia 32MB, and still got the same results. I can usually figure stuff like this out, but this MB is extremely complicated, and the power supply has more wires and cables than I have ever seen. I thought maybe the hardrive wasnt spinning and tried another one and still had the same result. My video card and processor fans are all running so there seems to be power. The CD drives have power. I also noticed that there is a light on the front of my case, dont know what it is, but it also turns orange. Any suggestions.

Hi Wacky78900,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that your Y500 Laptop is not turning ON after playing game and turning OFF manually, I suggest you to perform the Flee-Power and check the issue. Below are the steps to check and resolve the issue:

Remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer.
Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.

If the issue persists even after performing the Flee-Power and as the computer is in warranty, I would Strongly Suggest Calling Technical Support for Assistance. Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I?m sure they will be a great help.

Do post us back for further queries.

Best Regards

Hi I've had the Dell XPS 8700 for over a year now and it's an excellent Desktop.
I've recently moved my tower to a new location and notice there is a solid orange light on all the time inside the PC, I believe it's on the motherboard... should I be worried this is on all the time? It's just I've never noticed it before.
Also on the back of the PC there is a solid green light, I'm guessing this is to just tell me the PC has Power.
I tried a google search but everyone with the orange light seems to have PC issues, my pc is working fine as far as I can tell.

Answer:Dell XPS 8700 Orange Light inside and Green Light on Back

LED on the motherboard will be on as long as the PC is plugged into a working outlet. It's perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.
If you unplug the PC from the wall and press/hold the power button for ~15 sec, that LED will go off. Again, perfectly normal...
Green LED says there's power to the PSU.

My Qosmio F20-149 crashed yesterday and I havent been able to get it to work again. When I try to switch it on, the Power LED blinks on and off (on:1 sec, off:1 sec) and the cooler fan is working on full power. When I press any key, there is a kind or error sound. otherwise no reaction from laptop; even the CD-drive doesnt open.

I've done no RAM-updates and I use original Toshiba power adapter. I've tried starting the laptop using only battery, only power supply and on both. No change in reaction. I've tried all possible combination (with one, without one, with both...etc) of both my RAM-cards (512+512) and still no use.

I'm really stumped.

Answer:Qosmio F20 doesn't boot - Power LED blinks orange

If I understand you right your notebook is sending a blinking code. This code will be shown if notebook has detected some problem with power supply electronic.
In this case there is nothing you can do and notebook must be sent to nearest authorized service provider.

They have manuals with exact code description and instructions how to solve this.
Sorry buddy but I don't believe anybody here can offer exact diagnostic for this issue.

i'm really lost. i just disconnected my computer last night (worked fine then)...just about an hour ago i went to hook it back up again. started it up...just after it detected all my drives...i got one of those error beeps. (keyboard one i believe)...then it continues on...the lights on the keyboard even do that typical flashy thingie....then does the usual cdrom boot check...then i get another error beep....then my screen goes black...and it waits till i press a key (i think) because when i've hit ctrl it moves on to load windows2000...then when it gets to the "press ctrl-alt-del to login" screen...nothing works...the keyboard doesn't respond (the caps light won't even come on)...and plus there is no cursor...

pretty poor grammer and even english in that description...so i hope someone is able to decode it. i would really appreciate any help!

thanx in advance..

Answer:{Moved to Hardware Forum} - not detecting keyboard or mouse at boot up.....

Hi,

Have you made sure you plugged the keyboard into the keyboard socket, and not the wrong way round. If you got it round the right way, take the cables out, and make sure there is no damage to the pins (Nothing bent or missing). If that doesn't work, take all the cables out,and start again from the beginning.

Hope this helps.

This has gone from bad to worse. It started with an error message when I went to close down, to the effect that the Start Button wasn't working and would reset on restart. I restarted; it didn't reset. I could use programs but the Start button still wouldn't work. I tried to restart in Safe Mode, but the computer wouldn't go into Safe Mode -- I got the screens that let me select reset but the final step that would select Safe Mode with Networking just got skipped. I'm a little sketchy on what I did next (I got kind of ticked and had to step away from the computer for about a week to cool off, and I'm afraid I didn't write out a history while it was still fresh in my mind) but I tried a variety of things to force it to start in Safe Mode and the result is that it doesn't start at all now: the power light comes on, but the screen stays blank and there's no action on the drives.
Should I use my laptop to create a USB Recovery Drive to start the desktop computer on?

Hello!
My father-in-laws desktop computer is acting funny. When the power button is pushed on the light around the button comes on and the fan starts but thats all it does. The fan usually comes on and is quite loud and then it quiets down and you hear the rest of the computer booting up. Nothing is on the monitor except "no signal" and the fan is the only thing heard running. It worked fine the day before and it was shut down properly.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Answer:Computer won't boot but fan and power light is on

The first thing I would try is to make sure that all the connections to the monitor are tight. If they are, I would try another, known to be working, monitor and cables to eliminate that problem.

Hi, I wonder if someone out there could help me with a problem?

I was using my M2 on Friday when my friend accidentally knocked a very small amount of soft drink onto the front of my M2, I immediately put it upright and got a hairdryer on it.

After leaving it an hour I tried using it and everything was working as before which was a great relief, however a day later I was using the M2 to check my e-mail when all of a sudden in went off.

The power light is on was still on and so was the light that indicates I have a CD drive slotted in, I tried many times and it would not boot up, so I left again for a day and yesteday morning it looked like it was booting up only to freeze on the Windows screen, it then did it again and it hasn't booted up since.

Could anyone please give me some advice on what I could possibly do to fix this problem?

Regards,

Russ

Answer:Tecra M2 - Will not boot up, power light is on

Hello Russ

Please be realistic. What you can do in this situation? Not much! You can try to start the unit. See if you can enter the BIOS and if yes how long the unit stays ON. If the unit works for a longer period you can try to boot up from CD (for example with recovery media).

You can try to connect HDD as external one to other notebook and try to save all your important data and install OS again. More than that is not possible. If there is some electronic malfunction it is not easy to fix it on your own and helps just technical investigation to see which hardware component is damaged.

Greetings,, I have a Dell Dimension E510. The other night, my son went to shut down the computer, and before it went down the correct way, he turned the power off. Now when he tries to turn the pc on, the power light will flash slowly, but the pc will never boot up. If it was a bad power supply, the power button would not even light up... right? Any ideas?

Answer:power light flashes, but pc won't boot

Get your Service Tag number (on the system and the paperwork) and type it in here to access all the stuff on your PC: http://support.dell.com/support/top...t_central?~ck=ln&c=us&cs=04&l=en&lnki=0&s=bsd
Look in the FAQ's or the manuals for how to reset the CMOS and that will probably fix it.
Your system has gotten stuck in a power save state.
The E510's need a BIOS upgrade (under downloads) to fixe several problems. Get it too

do you mean a single beep, or multiple beeps? These codes will identify the issue.

Specifically with Dell desktops, you can refer to these beep codes:
1 beep: BIOS ROM corruption or failure
2 beeps: RAM not detected
3 beeps: Motherboard failure
4 beeps: RAM failure
5 beeps: CMOS Battery failure
6 beeps: GPU failure
7 beeps: Bad CPU

Additional Dell error information can be found here.

I was upgrading this computer to Windows 10, I had done an in place install but the kids had spyware that was showing up even then. I did a refresh, it failed I did an install and finally got into windows. Installed a couple updates and rebooted.
The computer has been bricked since. The only thing that is happening is the LED that indicates the power above the button will not stop flashing white. Plugged in or not plugged in, after holding down the power button for 5, 10 and 30 seconds, The power light stops flashing for a moment and then starts again. I tried multiple outlets. No clue unless it is coincidental hardware failure.

Answer:XPS 18 will not boot, power light will not stop blinking

I'll ammend that.  I went back in and re-removed the battery cable.  I also removed the CMOS battery cable this time... that at least got me to an onscreen error message and access to BIOS!

Gateway DX4640 desktop froze in the middle of viewing IGN.com.

It required a hard re-boot. Now I get a slow flashing power light. Fan starts but it won?t boot. I tried bootable CD with no success, although the CD drive does spin when a CD is inside.

We tried the following:
1. unplugging power and then depressing power bottom for a minute to discharge battery.
2. pulling out the memory cards one at a time, and then booted with just one memory card at a time without success.
3. removed battery and reinserted after 10 minutes

I would appreciate any advice you might have.
Thanks.

Answer:Slow Flashing power light – no boot

This is a common issue with Gateway machines, it is down to the onboard Video chip overheating and failing, though this mostly happens with laptops!! have you got a spare vid card lying around or can you borrow one from another machine and try it in agp/pci/pcie expansion slot, to rule it out ??

Hey all,

Weird one here. Got myself a new graphics card the other day, upgrading from a Radeon x1650 pro, which died after 4 odd years of good service, to the Radeon HD5450, and everything seems to have gone successful except for since installing it, when I press the power button to boot, the PC's power light will blink 7 times and then boot up normally on the 8th blink.

I was kinda in 2 minds about whether or not to troubleshoot this if I'm honest, but figured I might as well in case it could be causing some kinda damage. I can't see any error's appearing, nothing in event logs, as far as I can tell the PSU should be more than capable, everything seems to be performing as expected, it's just these 8 blinks before the system starts to boot.

I've reseated the memory and Graphics and tried booting with a few non-essential components disconnected, which fixed it for the first boot, but the issue reappeared for every boot after that.

As well as my listed components I've also got a PCI NIC (D-link DGE-528T), wireless KBoard + Mouse, USB Wireless Adapter, a SATA DVD RW and a couple of fans (1x80mm, 1x92mm and 1xLED120mm)

...any ideas?

Cheers,
Sean

we had a storm the other day and think a power surge hit my computer, even though it was on a surge protector. I also lost the vcr with the surge so i know it's not a virus problem.we think it was the lighting that hit close to the house. the computer i have is an e-machine t1105 with windows xp. When i push the power button on the computer the light dosen't come on but the fan starts and it sounds like it's running. the cd rom will still open but won't seem to load anything. i tryed the reboot disk to see if it would read but i get nothing but black screen and monitor says check pc the screen is ok. the green light on the back off pc where plug goes is still lighting up green. Is there any hope for my computer? even if there isn't any hope do you think the data on hard drive may be retreivable? or a part that i could have switched out and have a computer again without having to purchase a new one?

Answer:storm came now computer won't boot and power light off

Sure doesn't sound good

Off top of my head, fan spins, nothing else comes 'on', possible

Memory / CPU / Video card / Motherboard malfunction.
PS: if fan comes on, but no power light, could be a faulty/buggered up power supply too I suppose ( I woulda thunk the power light would come on before any fans spun )

DOH !!! can't even blame Microsoft on that either.... its hardware.
Is it a microsoft computer?? hehe

shut down disconntied cleaned with vacum and air hooked back up power botton started flashing and didnt boot up

Answer:hp power light flashing wont boot up

I hope you don't mean a household vacuum. Check all the wiring to make sure you didn't pull something loose. If you used a metal nozzle vacuum, you could have fried the mobo.

I have had this custom built PC for a couple of months. All of a sudden when i pressed shut off on Windows 10 and went to bed, it stopped working. The fans wont start, I don't hear running from my SSD or hardrive, however the light that indicates the PC is on remains on. I have unplugged my power supply and unplugged my surge protector from the wall and it remains on. The only way i can get the LED to turn off is by unplugging from the motherboard. My specs are here ---> http://pcpartpicker.com/b/Mhhqqs

I found an old Dell Inspiron 530a in my house, it was stored because it didn’t work anymore, so I got in the job of restoring it. I found out the problem was the PSU, so I replaced it and it worked fine for about a week but 2 days ago, the computer froze for almost 2 hours, so I turned off the CPU. After that, the computer does not want to boot, I press the power button on the front of the PC, and it remains in an orange light, and in the inside, there is also another orange light in the Motherboard. The fans start very loudly and don’t stop until I unplug the CPU or I turn it off from the power button. I have tried these “solutions” for what I think is the problem:

Removing the Motherboard battery
Removing the RAM
Disconnecting the 24-pin from the motherboard
Disconnecting everything from the PSU
Switching the jumpers near the batteries

I don’t know what the problem might be, but I am almost sure that the PSU is not, since I bought it with a higher capacity than the original PSU and I have done the tests with a jumper in the 24-pin connector
The new PSU is a  “Coolmax V-500 Series 500W 120mm ATX Power Supply” and everything else are original Inspiron 530a parts.
Thanks for any assistance you can give me

trying to turn on toshiba tecra a8 laptop. the light on the power button flashes twice amber and once green and it won;t start up.

any suggestions?

Answer:Tecra A8: Power light flashing amber twice and won't boot

Remove the battery and (try) to start the notebook only with AC-Adaptor connected.
If your A8 behaves the same you have to bring it to service.

A coworker has a laptop that will not boot up. the AC power light flashes amber. a long, short, long, short, long, short, long, short.

I have checked the battery and reseated the RAM.
Any Ides?

Answer:Tecra M2 does not boot - AC power light flashes amber

I think only ASP's have this kind of information.

If you have tried different memory, and tried the memory in different slots, its probably a Mainboard problem.

Desktop Computer Won't Boot Up, Monitors are off, but Power light is on

Guys, this is what has happened.

(1) A few times, when I get home from work, my computer had unexpectedly turned itself off
(2) After pushing the ON button, the light turns on, but it doesn't BEEP and doesn't boot up
(3) The monitors are blank
(4) The fans are on

I've tried taking out all the components and wires and putting them back in, but nothing is doing the trick. The funny thing is that this has happened many times recently, but when I turn the computer on, it's fine. Now, this time, it just won't boot up, even though the power is on. My computer was behaving normally prior to this event.

I have an Acer AM5630-U5209A with upgraded 600mw power supply.

Thanks a lot for any help guys,
Josh

However, the front panel power light flashes 7 white and 2 Amber continuously
What is the error? And how to rectify?

Answer:Inspiron 7559 power light flashing, no boot

Thank you for your message. Is the system model listed correctly? The diagnostic indicator on this model is not the system LED. Any error is indicated by system beeps. Please disconnect the power cord, press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds to release static. Check if there is light on the AC adapter & if the light stays on when connected to the computer.Try to start the computer by holding down the Fn key & check if there is any display for beeps heard. For better assistance, please click on my Dell username & share the service tag along with the registered name & email address.

My HP Pavilion s5206 won't boot, fans working, green power light is on. Monitor won't come out of sleep and keyboard is dead.

Answer:computer won't boot,fans are working,power light on,

The monitor won't come out of standby mode until it gets a video signal from the PC, which it evidently is not getting. Coupled with the fact that the keyboard is not working, it's very likely a faulty motherboard.

I am having an issue with my G7-1075dx. Power light comes on, amber light of WiFi glows, fan starts up and runs, and that's it: Blank screen and no further boot. I've done all the 'hard boot' and hardware investigations that I can think of: replacing hard drive, removing and resetting RAM modules, etc. No help. I have seen possible solutions listed for a device running Windows 7. My laptop runs Windows 8. Has there been any solutions given for this problem? I see by perusing the internet that this is not entirely uncommon, and up to this point this has been a great computer to work with. Help!!!

Answer:HP PAVILION G7 LAPTOP WON'T BOOT. POWER LIGHT ON, FAN RUNS, ...

Are there any beeping sounds? Ram cards are correctly inserted?

I started my inspiron today and the battery light was flashing orange, no other colors. I restarted my computer and it works just fine, the only problem being the light still flashing. I plug in the adapter and the battery panel says it's not charging. All my settings that usually change when charging (brightness, wallpaper slideshow changing) change just as normal.
Everything else is working fine, and as of now my battery doesn't even seem to be going down. I'm not entirely sure what's happened-- my computer has been sitting in my room since I last used it last night, so it's not like any hardware could've been damaged from transporting it.
Anyway if I could get some advice that would be awesome.

Answer:Flashing orange light

Does the system correctly sense the AC adapter, or is it showing unknown (F2 at powerup to check)?
If you need further assistance, post the system model information and age as well.

Hello, I was not sure where to post this as I haven't got a clue as too the problem.. thats causing all this mess! My problem is with my Dell Optiplex 745 thats running the OS XP its about an 3 year old computer now. Ok so heres my problem I went to boot it up and all that I got was an solid orange/amber light, which is normally a green light .. it will stay on just long enough to get the disk drives green light to turn on and the fans to run. Also it don't power up long enough to get the monitor to wake up or go in the BIOS. Then it shuts down again.. it has been doing this over and over since yesterday.. I have had the problem in the past.. and to by pass the problem I would open the dish drive door and put in a disk that I use to boot up with in moments like this and it would boot up.. but since then the disk drive has quit reading disks so I cant rely on that like I used too... I contacted my father who I talk to for all my computer problems.. and with him on the phone walking me though the steps of unplugging everything from the back.. done that and nothing.. taking plugs out and then replacing them back in and still nothing... took out the memory cards and checked them one by one and still nothing.. unplugged the disk drive and wouldn't you know still nothing.. even went to as far as taking out the hard drive and making sure that it was running and as it turned out it is running. i even just removed and then replaced the battery and still nothing.. If anyone has any ad... Read more

Answer:The Orange light of death!! :/

Had a very similar problem recently. Mine was caused by a defective memory module.
Try plugging in only one stick at a time to find the bad one.
