CPU runs at 100% when charging laptop battery, when not charging its fine. HELP!!!

Question: CPU runs at 100% when charging laptop battery, when not charging its fine. HELP!!!

Hi...

I am having a problem with my laptop computer. I figured out that my laptop, when being charged or using the Power Outlet, runs at 100% CPU at times, and slows me down when running and working on some open applications. At first I thought I had tons of spyware or even a virus, and even posted a Hijackthis file here. Nothing was found.
I figured out that my cpu runs at 100% when using the power outlet, or when my computer is chargnig. When I unplug the powercord and use the battery life, everything runs GREAT!!!!! my cpu drops to a normal 4-8% usage with multiple applications running. WEIRD huh? Can anyone relate to this ?? Is this and indication that my battery is going bad???? Can someone help me with this or suggest what is going on? I am running windows XP home edition, and have a compac presario 1500 series. Pent 4..

HELP!!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I suddenly encountered a battery problem in my laptop, IdeaPad Y510P. It seems like other folks have the same problem in Ideapad series.   When I plug in a charger, the laptop shows that battery is charing but, it never goes above 7% (w/ max battery life mode). According to Energy Management, battery status is fine.  After searching similar issues, I think it may be a problem with firmware, but I was not able to find a firmware update for IdeaPad series, Windows 8.1.... I have been using my laptop over a year, but never had this problem before. Can you please guide me through how to fix this issue?  Thanks for your help..!

After that reboot and install it back and see if there is a difference specially on the battery status. Also basing on your statement that the unit is with you for more than a year and you have not encountered any problem except recently it would seem that a battery replacement might be in order. Again before jumping into conclusion check the ac adapter and battery based on the procedure given in your hardware maintenance manual.

My S1 that has worked fine for the past 12 months. However it started turning itself off abruptly, even when plugged in. The next day it could not get past the boot page before it turned itself off. The laptop now only works with the battery removed and the power plugged in. Starting up, and reinserting the battery turns off the laptop I would put it down to a faulty battery, but two other colleagues have had the same thing happen to their S1s in the past two days.  We ordered a new battery, and the laptop will start on it, but the system does not charge the battery (even at 20%) so it looks as if the fault is with the charging I have updated the bios and battery firmware. Am running windows 10. Has anyone else seen this problem?

Good day,I have reached the next problem: after I've returned back from a vacation, I have inserted AC adapter into my laptop and the orange battery indicator was not displayed. I have turned on my laptop and found, that the battery doesn't charge - there is "Plugged in and not charging" message near the battery indicator in the tray. I have tried to follow the steps from the http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-and-U-series-Laptops/Ideapad-Z400-or-Z500-battery-will-not-cha... , but it didn't hepl - the program freezes on the first step "Now configuring the program..." http://take.ms/k0TBi Have also tried to delete/reinstall Energy Management - nothing helped. OS - Windows 8.1 x64.Power Management Version 8.0.2.14. (have also tried to reset battery via that toold - didn't help). Thanks in advance.

So lately I've been having an issue with my laptop.  The charger is plugged in but the computer doesn't seem to recognize it unless I shift the laptop to a certain position.  This seems to have little to do with the position of the AC plug in the DC port at all as it's not the same positions that will actually get the computer to recognize the charger is plugged in. I don't think this has anything to do with the battery itself as removing the battery does not make the connection more consistent.  The computer will still not recognize the AC adapter is plugged in.  I had the same problem with my old laptop, a V570. It will also briefly lose connection and restore it before my display can process it.  I know this by the CPU throttle in the BIOS (which I can't access to turn off because of the version of BIOS used) will randomly slow my computer down and won't restore to full speed when the charger is making connection again. What just happened lately which is making me wonder about this more is that my laptop stopped recognizing the charger as being plugged in in the tray icon but the charger light on my laptop started flashing orange.  The blue power light was also flashing. Sometimes when I restart my computer to reset the CPU throttle, I will get a pop-up message from the Battery Management Software stating, "Adapter has limited support: performance will be affected ..." Full specs available on the purchase page here. &n... I have a Thinkpad X1 Carbon (Gen3) Model 20BS touchscreen  running Windows 7 64 bit. The battery is not charging -- it's in a perpetual state of "plugged in not charging"  and even when plugged in, it?s losing appr 1 percent per day (down to 31%). This has happened a few times over the past 3-4 months since I got the machine, but I've managed to find things that "fixed" it (at least temporarily): - Resetting the power gauge worked once - Changing the custom battery charge threshold worked a few times - Plugging in the power cord at different stages of reboot seemed to fix it once (although not sure why / how) Based on previous thread posts, I've uninstalled and reinstalled Power Manager and then tried to run Battery Gauge Reset, but to no avail. And the reset only appears to run for about 30 sec before the system tray icon switches back to normal. Thanks in advance. Karl

Hi, I upgraded my Sony Vaio to Windows 10. Since the upgrade, battery icon showing "Plugged in, Charging" but not actually charging. Always it is in 3% and when unplug the power, system shutdowns.

Answer:Sony Vaio - shows charging, but not charging the battery?

From: Recovery and Troubleshooting Guide
Connect to a Power Outlet in the Startup Guide.
When you intend to run your VAIO computer on battery power, the battery pack may have run out of power. Connect the computer to a power outlet. For details, refer to Connect to a Power Outlet in the Startup Guide.
If you did not previously follow the standard procedure to turn off your VAIO computer, the power controller may be suspended due to a program error.
Do as follow:
- On the models with a built-in battery pack, unplug all cables and peripheral devices, including the AC adapter and USB devices, from the computer, push and hold the battery off button for at least three seconds with a thin, straight object (such as a paper clip), and leave the computer for at least
five minutes. Then, plug the AC adapter and turn on the computer once again. For the location of the battery off button, refer to Locating Parts and Controls in the Startup Guide.
- On the models with a removable battery pack, unplug all cables and peripheral devices, including the AC adapter and USB devices, from the computer, remove the battery pack, and leave the computer for at least five minutes. Then, reinstall the battery pack and turn on the computer once again.
? If the charge indictor is blinking or the ? power button does not work, a battery error may have occurred or the battery pack may not be detected.

Hi ! Over the past two weeks I've spent my time troubleshooting why my recently (used) bought X240 is not charging the internal battery. Short timeline: 1. Bought used X240 in good condition but with dead internal and external battery - working well when using power supply.2. Came home and tested that thing -> both batteries show "0% - not charging" (with Win10Pro installed) *suprise, surprise*3. Ordered both new internal and external battery.4. External battery came 1.5 weeks ago. Installed it and worked like a charm (Battery 2 (external): X%, charging).5. Internal battery came the day before yesterday. Installed it and did not work -> "Battery 1: 53% - plugged in, charging - Battery 2: 6% - plugged in, not charging)6. Waited the recommended 6-12 hours like it was written in the "manual" to get it fully charged.7. Next morning -> Batterystatus unchanged (see point 5) ... It's stuck at 53%. Though the status says it's charging, it doesn't.8. Simply tried out what's going to happen when I pull the cable of the power supply -> Notebook instant off *hmmm*9. As the external battery was obviously blocked from charging by the internal (as it was not charged), I've taken out the internal battery again and et voila, external battery is charging again.I've tried to remove both batteries and perform the "Magic Trick" (press the main power switch for 30 secs) and I've also pushed the "reset" switch on the backside near the battery. Sadly without any result ;-(... Read more

Hello and peace on you..
I have a DELL Inspiron N5110 from early 2011
I was using the laptop correctly..The laptop was plugged in and the battery was charging..Then i removed the charger let the laptop on battery until suddenly the laptop shuts down without even telling me that the battery is low or even leaving some "emergency" charge on it (usually 7% or 5% i don't know)..I plugged it in to charge it again and open my leptop and i found out that the battery is not taking charge anymore!
I tried to see if the propblem is with the connector and tried to remove and put in again the charger and it ddid not work
i tried also to remove the battery and put it in again, it did not help
Now it is stuck on 2% of charge from 5 days and it's plugged in!
The laptop says that the battery is charging, but actually it is not charging and the charge level is the same from days
I looked up some solutions online like uninstalling ACPI microsof from Device manager and reboot the laptop..It did not work
"Jauge de batterie" which is an integrated software related to DELL, says that the battery health is good and that my battery is working properly
The laptop works fine with only the charger plugged in and battery out
PS: the laptop heats usually but i think it did not affect the battery at all since it was working fine and the charge took me about at minimum 30 min on high performance to be emptyed before this happens.
Please, i'm seeking for help
I hope you can ... Read more

Answer:Battery says: Charging, but it is not actually charging while plugged in and is stuck in 2% for 5 days !

First thing to check is wherther the sysetm recognizes the AC adapter - F2 at powerup to check that.
If it doesn't, try a new Dell OEM AC adapter - if that doesn't fix the issue, replace the DC jack board, and if that doesn't solve it, the mainboard.  Note:  you MUST use a Dell adapter - NOT a third party unit.
If the system DOES recognize the AC adapter, but won't charge the battery, chances are the battery is bad and will need to be replaced.
You cannot solve the issue without checking and, if necessary, replacing these parts.

AS we havew properly understood your issue pleaseds perform these steps carefully : Uninstalling and reinstalling power management software in Windows:In order to correct problems with the battery's power management software, follow the steps below.1. Access the ?Device Manager? .2. Expand the Batteries category.3. Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall .WARNING: Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver.4. On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes .Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes . Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery's power. Restarting Windows will have the same effect of letting Windows re-recognize the hardware and installing the correct drivers. If that doesn?t fix it, then shut down the computer, unplug all power cords, remove the battery, then depress the power button for 30 seconds. Replace the battery making sure all connections are solid, then plug in the power cord. Hopefully things are good.Hope this helps. Nitin singh guleria

Running Windows 7 x64.One of my end users' T410 would say that it was charging, but the battery percentage would never change unless you unplugged it. Then it would get lower, but plugging it in would not recharge the battery. We tried putting her HD in a working T410, but the problem carried over. I ended up giving her a new laptop, but I would like to fix the errant T410 if at all possible. Since the problem carried over with the HD in a working T410, I figured it was a software issue.  Reinstalled Windows. No good.Did a wipe of the HD (everything 0's). Reinstalled Windows. No Good.Booted from Linux liveCD. Charging worked, but once I booted into a fresh copy of Windows, it stopped charging. So it seems that the hardware is capable of charging the battery, but not on a fresh copy of Windows: only Linux. Is there anything else I could try to get it working on Windows? Thank you for your time and have a great day.

Answer:T410 says "battery plugged in, charging" but not actually charging

Hi Hang,

Open Lenovo Energy Management
Click on the bottom gear icon between i and ?.
Under Battery Health, Click on Start for Battery Gauge Reset.
That should refresh the gauge and let the system finish through the cycle.

I hope the above information helps.

Hi guys, I ran into this problem a few days ago where the laptop is plugged in, it says its charging, but the battery % won't go up at all. It started around 16% and each time I unplugged it for whatever reason it would go down but when I would plug it back in it wouldn't charge it back up. So now I'm at 8% and afraid to unplug it again.  I have the Energy Management set to Balanced, Maximum Battery Life, and it's status is "Charging" and "Good". Any help is appreciated, thank you guys.

Answer:Y510P "plugged in, charging" but battery is not charging

hi kanyewest,

Welcome to the Forums.

Can you try the following:
1. While having the battery and AC adapter plugged-in, boot into the BIOS (by pressing F2) and unplug the AC adapter until the system shuts off (this is to compete the discharge the battery).

2. Once the machine shuts down, remove and reinsert the battery and plugin the AC adapter then let the battery charge for about 2hrs while the machine is off and observe the battery lifght indicator. After 2hrs, power up the machine and observe the battery percentage.

If the battery is stucked at 0%, I recommend you contact lenovo and report your findings as the battery may need to be replaced.

Hi, I have an X220 Tablet that's about 3 and a half years old -- so unfortunately just out of warranty -- and I'm having battery/charging problems. A few months ago the original 6-cell battery that came with the laptop died: Power Manager reported it as dead and needing replacing. It had had 500-something cycles, so it seemed reasonable. I went ahead and bought a new 6-cell battery from Lenovo, the 67+, and then my system was fine again. But one day a few weeks ago this battery suddenly stopped charging. Power Manager reported that "The battery is in good condition", and it was reported as "Status: Charging", but it was not actually charging and was instead very slowly discharging its way to 0%. Something suspicious is perhaps that PM reported "Current: 0.00 A". I thought it might be the battery, so I got another one, but that has exactly the same issue -- now I have two batteries, each discharged completely and with no way to charge them. Charging doesn't happen regardless of whether the computer is on or off, or whether I'm in Windows (7) or Linux. I checked the AC adapter/charger with a multimeter and it is reporting 20V as it's supposed to, so I guess that's okay. Plus, the laptop runs fine on just the AC adapter, even if it's a little bit slower (which I gather is due to it being 65W rather than 90W). The only slightly unusual thing I can remember from the day charging stopped functioning is that I was using the 'always on' USB port to charge my ... Answer:Battery not charging despite being reported as good and as charging

It is hard for me to be certain without seeing it, and Sweden is a long way from San Francisco. The symptom point to a blown fuse or power transistor (mosfet). Either can cause your problem, and usually require motherboard replacement. If nothing was going on when the problem started, (no power failure, lightning storm, failure of power adapter, tripping over the cord) I would guess mosfet. Some shops can repair fuses, but they require fairly good soldering equipment. I have had much poorer luck fixing mosfets, because usually, more than one chip is bad. You might be able to find a motherboard for a reasonable price. I have one for sale on eBay for under $100, but international shipping is expensive and you might do better locally. I've had my HP Envy laptop for about 3 months, and yesterday I noticed that when it was plugged in it wasn't charging (the battery icon says "plugged in, not charging"). I turned it off overnight, plugged in, and this morning the battery was fully charged. It only seems to not charge when it is turned on. I have tried removing the battery, turning on, deleting the ACPI-compliant control method battery, turning off, and turning back on again (as advised in other forum responses), but with no joy. At first I thought it could either be a battery issue, but the fact it fully charged overnight whilst off would lead me to believe it's not, and is probably a software / settings issue. Any ideas please, I've run out of google search ideas!!

Hi,
I have a dell xps 12, bought in 2012. Recently the battery stopped charging. The battery shows 0%, so I have to be plugged in to turn the laptop on. When it is on, the battery icon on the task bar says "plugged in, charging" but after a day it is still 0%.
Since then I bought a new battery. Just fitted it, but now the battery icon on the task bar says "plugged in, not charging". Furthermore, when I Fn+F3 to show the battery meter, it says "battery charging diabled". There is no option here to turn battery charging on. Nor is there an option to enable battery charging in BIOS.
BIOS does show battery performing normally, so does the battery meter (Fn+F3). BIOS also shows AC adapter as 45W, which is the original adapter.
Any help is appreciated!

For some time have received the error message regarding under power smart adaptor with newer replacement HP adaptor matching original.  Battery icon lists % charge & "not charging".  Battery tests good in HP Support Assistant battery check.  Power adaptor will power my older Pavillion laptop but not  the Envy with or without battery installed.  Battery charging LED does not light.  Have tried re-calibration by deleting Microsoft devices in Device Manager.  Envy will operate with and without battery while using Dell power adaptor. Computer repair shop says Smart adaptor produces 0 voltage (even though it powers Pavillion) and I need a new battery (even though diagnostic test indicates good). Help!!!

To whom it may concern.I am in desperate help..... I have tried every solution i have managed to find on the internet but none of them work. I have a HP ProBook 450 G1 Laptop. When plugging the power supply in the batery shows that its charging but it never actually charges but simply remians on at same level.....I have checked the power supply as I have an exact duplicate laptop at my disposal, same with the battery. The battery charges perfectly in the other laptop but not in my laptop. When swithcing the batteries form the other pc it will not charge in my PC. bot both are fine in the other PC. I have removed the battery, checked power supply, un-installed and reinstalled the ACPI-complaint and adapter as suggested by most. I have done what ever solution i can have managed to find but neither have worked but the battery works  just fine when inserting into the other duplicate laptop and charges fine. I have tried to instal or upgrade BIOS settings etc. Nothing has worked for me! Please can someone point me in the correct direction!!!!!! Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Need Help!

The problem started from June 2, 2015 about 4 AM (UTC +8:00 Philippine, Manila)

I open my Notebook that morning to check on my e-mails and bills at gmail but it's not powering up. At first I thought that the battery was slightly drained because I saw my sister still using it at midnight. I asked her if she did not plugged in the charger when it is nearly drained but she said she plugged it and it is still full when she shut it down.

It is Li-ion Battery

I tried plugging in the charger to check whether it still has remaining battery. It powered up.
On the taskbar/notifications/running apps it says 8% Available (Plugged In, Charging).
So to check out the problem, I left it turned off charging for about two hours.

Then after two hours it still says 8% Available (Plugged In, Charging)
What the hell is this?! I asked my self.
I installed an app to check the status of the battery (Battery Bar)
Battery Bar says something like this:
Capacity: 2K of 8K mWh (not sure about this)
Charging: 0 mW
Running on AC
7.9% Available
Something like that.

Summary Notes:
1. Does not power up without Charger
2. It detects the Battery saying 8% Available (Plugged In, Charging)
3. Though Plugged In, Charging it does not charge at all because of 0 mW charge rate
4. It turns off when the Charger is plugged out.
5. It still run even without the Battery (when the Charger was plugged in of course, then a red x mark shows in the notification taskbar battery icon)

Thus:
1. The problem is som... Read more

Hello,

I have read a few other similar posts but none of their solutions worked on my laptop.  The battery percentage stays the same when plugged into the charger.  I first noticed the issue this morning when I powered the laptop on and the percentage was at 44% with the charger plugged in overnight, and it was at 44% when I plugged the charger in last night.  I only put the battery in the laptop a couple days during the week when I'm in school, otherwise I just leave it out and have it powered through the adapter.  The laptop is 7 months old.

I tried the Gauge Reset for 8 hours today and it wasn't doing anything so I cancelled it.   I have reinstalled the Energy Management software.  I have also tried shutting it down for 20 minutes and charging it at a different wall outlet.

What else can I do?

Thank you

Edit:
******Solution******

I just tried this from another post and it worked!  Battery is charging again.

a. turn off the computer and remove the battery and AC adapter.
b. press and hold the power button for 30 secs and reconnect the AC adapter
c. turn ON the computer and continuously tap F2 to boot into the BIOS, when you're in, press F9 to load defaults and press F10 to save and exit.
d. boot into Windows (while still having just the AC adapter plugged-in) then reinsert the battery.

Answer:G50-70 Battery says "Plugged in, Charging" but not charging

Hi Mistwild82,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with battery plugged in charging in your Lenovo Y50-70 laptop.

Please try to perform the gauge reset, under power manager select maintenance guide and select gauge reset and check for the issue.

Also try to uninstall the Microsoft ACPI driver, uninstall the drivers under ACPI and restart the system and check for the issue.

Also shut down the system and try to charge the system for 1 or 2 hours and check if the charging percentage has increased. If the charging percentage has increased in Linux then it?s a issue with operating system please reinstall the operating system and check for the issue.

Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!

Best regards,

The new replacement battery for my T40 is not charging at all. in spite of the fact that the T40 battery statistics state the battery is healthy , charging and behaving normally  (with currently 0 % charge, 8.64 voltage, 24 C temperature (not hot)).  The T40 works just fine when plugged into a wall outlet so the problem is not the A/C adapter.  The T40 device manager gives correct manufacturing date 2/09 and correct T40 plug in date of 4/09, serial number, etc.  the design voltage is 10.80 V so it knows what is there.  I am using windows XP prof... This battery is  6 cell..  The original battery was a 9 cell. The manufacturer contends this battery will work on any T40 and the manual indicates that either 6 cell or 9 cell can be used... The only abnormal indication so far is that when I asked  the Lenovo site to automatically identify the specs of my T40, it listed  a 9 cell battery instead of a 6 cell one.   Does that tell us anything about what might be wrong?  with respect to the suggestions on the regular lenovo site, I already did all  that I could do  including sending the first replacement battery back to the manufacturer who then sent a second one to me.  I couldn't upgrade the battery controller because that first required an upgrade of the Bios and I can't do the Bios upgrade without a fully charged battery.  Thanks very much for any help.

Hey, I really need help. I'm having problems with my laptop. It's a dell inspiron 7559 and was bought around January. Recently I have seen that the battery has no longer been as hot as it used to be when I first started using it. Along with the sleeve on the tip of the screen power adapter (below the part where the adapter lights up) has started to come off, exposing the wires. The battery has continually dropped down its percentage rate ever since I bought it, and it won't go back up. It is currently at 0% battery life and it says when you highlight over the battery icon ( plugged in, not charging). It also happens to show the BIO setup when I start the computer and shows that the batteries wattage and type cannot be determined. In the BIOS setup, the ac adapter type is unknown. The battery has not been through any harsh conditions along with the laptop. I have tried removing the battery, starting up the computer with the ac adapter (which is 130 watts), then adding the battery back, and ac adapter, then turning it on, but it had no effects. If I remove my ac adapter while my computer is on ,it instantly turns off. If someone can support me with this issue, it would be gladly appreciated. Thanks.

I have a new laptop battery and I know that you are supposed to fully charge them on first use to optimize its life over time. My question is how long is it supposed to charge for (It's a 6 Cell Lithium-Ion) on that first charge and is it recommended that the laptop be shut off of while charging it, or can I use it while it fully charges for that first time?

Also, is it recommended that when using it, to unplug the power cord once the battery is fully charged and then let it drain, then fully charge, unplug and drain, etc. etc.? I know it is not good to leave the battery in and have it continue charging once it is already fully charged.

I appreciate in advance everyone's response.

Hi guys, Just bought a G41-35 laptop and I noticed it is not charging over 60%. Looked around the internet and saw articles that said threshold can be fixed by the Lenovo Setting app but apparently mine is not working. Tried uninstalling the app and reinstalling but still just crashes. I am using a windows 10 SL OS. Please advise on alternatives to fix battery charging threshold other that Lenovo setting app. Or, how to fix the app so I can work on charging threshold.  Thanks much, Maboroshi

I left it unplugged for a while until it reached 6% then the laptop went into standby mode. When I plugged it back in and turned it on, I quickly plugged it back out and in again to check the battery which was at 14%. I have it plugged back in at the moment. I wanted to know, is the battery charging right now or do I have to do anything else for it to charge?

Answer:Charging laptop BATTERY!

Hello rnavagamuwa and welcome to Seven Forums.

You may get different opinions on this, but no. You shouldn't have any problems leaving the laptop plugged in to the AC power. Some people leave the AC adapter plugged in all the time when using the laptop at home. Others just remove the battery and run off of AC power. Still others (and this is what I do) will remove the AC adapter every so often and run on battery power only. When the low battery alert appears I plug the AC adapter back in and let the battery recharge.

Every modern battery has a limited number of charge/recharge cycles so eventually, every battery will lose its ability to hold a charge. This is usually a gradual process and you'll notice that instead of having 3 hours of battery time it's now 2 hours, and then 1 hour, etc.

Why do I leave the AC adapter plugged in? One primary reason. I live in an area that experiences frequent power outages. If the main power goes out I still have the laptop battery available so my laptop doesn't just shut down. The same thing could be accomplished with a backup Universal Power Supply.

I just got a msg on my laptop that my battery isn't charging, despite the fact that it's been plugged in for hours.  It's only about a year old. Do batteries just die like that.  Sorry for the ignorance, but I'm more of a desktop guy.Tanx,KC

Answer:Why Isn't My Laptop Battery Charging

I've never had any battery (that hasn't leaked or exploded), that has just died like that. Did you have any severe battery life depreciation over the last couple of months? I'm more of a desktop guy myself but I can think of a couple of possibilities if the battery was fine.First off, does the computer register a battery present. I.e. does the computer say "No battery" under the battery status. It may be that there is a fault somewhere with the battery connection and the computer is either not able to make a connection with the charging terminal (negative I think) or make a connection with the positive terminal (output). Is there any corrosion on the laptop's battery bay terminals or the batteries terminals?Second, is the charger you are currently using the original charger for the laptop? If you are using the wrong charger then you may not be receiving enough power to charge that battery. We would have to know what laptop you are using though to have any hope of answering that. The OS might be helpful as well.

My second (portable) computer is an HP 4540s, 3-4 years old.Just turned it on, after 60 days non-use, with wall charger (WC) just plugged in, and it boots up normally. However, when placing the cursor on the small battery symbol in the lower right corner I get the message - 10% available (plugged in, not charging). Without the WC plugged in, it makes no effort to START. Running with the WC plugged in, if I unplug it the unit goes dead.Is this likely the simple matter of needs a new battery, or could there be some software function I need to access and adjust?

Answer:Laptop Battery Not Charging

If you leave it plugged in and computer off, does this battery take a charge at all? If answer is no, then its likely that the battery is dead and you need a new one. If the battery charges when the laptop is off only, then it could be a weak power supply or battery is drawing heavy on the power supply to where the charging is turned off as for keeping the computer running is more critical vs charging. One friend of mine has a 2 year old Core i3 HP Laptop and it gave her this message about a month ago. If she leave the laptop plugged in to charge and powered off, the battery will charge to 100% after charging for about 4 or 5 hours. She is then able to use laptop off of battery and battery life is what it was before the non-charge while computer in use started happening. She is happy using her laptop like this vs spending money on a new battery or power supply for it. I even thought something was up with the software for the power management and reinstalled it fresh and it made no difference. You might be in the same situation where it will only charge battery with the laptop off and powered off wall to charge battery.

I have an Alienware Sentia M3450 which is about 2 years old now and for the past couple of months, I have been completely tethered to an outlet as my battery will not charge. I called the tech support and of course i was told that my battery was dead, but that is not the case as i have tried a brand new battery with the same results. When the computer is on, the taskbar icon shows that it is charging constantly, but when the ac cable is unplugged, it continues to tell me that its charging. The problem with this is that if the ac cable is somehow jarred loose but not to the point of falling out of the socket, it does not tell me and unless i notice it quickly, the very small amount of battery power left depletes quickly and the computer shuts off, with no low battery warning or anything of the sort. I was thinking perhaps the problem lies in charging circuitry, but if someone has a better theory, I'm all ears. If it is found that the circuit board is the issue, where might i find that part? Thanks in advance!

Hi, I got my laptop for over 5 yrs and we had a problem with power supply. When the lead was connected the power indication light was flickering and we needed to fiddle with the end of the lead connected to the laptop to have steady power . Now it just does nothing. I bought new power lead but the laptop is just dead. No light and no life what so ever. Question is: is it gone gone or should I try to buy new battery (the old one didnt hold any power at all). Help please

Answer:Laptop battery not charging

You don't need a battery to operate most laptops. You can and shoudl fact take out the battery and see if it works with just AC.

Otherwise you may have a damage jack in the laptop, they commonly break especially if the power cable required fiddling around with. It's also possible the new power adapter is faulty or that the previous one damaged the motherboard.

Is there any other way that i can charge the battery or fix the reciver/

Thanks

Answer:Charging a battery without laptop

Hi lightmas, and welcome to TSG.

You will probably not be able to find any kind of device that will charge the battery outside of the laptop. The laptop has specialized electronics between the charger input jack and the battery. The electronics limits the voltage and current to the battery to prevent fire and other hazards. Any kind of external charging hardware would need to be matched to that particular model of battery.

Depending on the exact nature of the failure of the power input jack (charger reciver?), a repair may be as simple as some careful re-soldering of the jack to the printed circuit board in the computer. More serious damage may require replacing the jack or the entire motherboard.

Answer:laptop battery- take it out or keep charging?

When the battery is unused and fully charged, it doesn't overcharge. You just run off the electrical supply.

There is no need to take out the battery, the life won't be shortened if you use wall power all the time.

I have run XP, 7, 8, and Ubuntu all at different times, and each OS has always been unable to detect or charge the battery. I am currently running the latest version of Ubuntu on the laptop. Any ideas on how I can get the battery to charge?

Hi guys,I have been reading, and I have read that it's better to actually use your battery than to not. So I was wondering, is it possible to setup the power options so that it ONLY starts charging once it reaches a pre-defined level (ie 50%)? And if so, would this be at all beneficial, or would it just be a waste of time?I used to just never plug in the battery, but for the 10-60 seconds I used to have to occasionally unplug, I don't want to have to worry about keeping the battery charged.-Thanks in advance!

Answer:Laptop Battery Better Off Not Charging

not sure if you can set the battery to charge at certain levels, but...if your usually plugged, take out the battery and store it in a plastic bag in the freezer, if you are using the battery a lot, plug it for recharge only when its down to the last 10-20%..its not as important as it used to be, but batteries are still pretty expensive, so a little thought goes a long way.;-)i hate computers!but cant help myself....

Hey everyone,I have a problem with my Laptop (HP Compaq 510)Since yesterday evening my laptop is suddenly not charging. The orange color light did not light up and the laptop did not show the charging symbol. Now the battery is dead and I obviously can't use the laptop. I removed the battery and tried starting it but that does not work either. There can't be a problem with the charger because it was working perfectly until yesterday evening. The battery however is somewhat old and its battery life was continually decreasing (it recently could run only for 30-45 mins after a full charge ). What could be the problem? should I replace the battery or could there be some other problem for the laptop to suddenly stop charging??Thank you for your help.Akeed.

Dear Sir,
I use a Laptop with Windows 7 system. What is the right way of charging the battery?
1) Should I always keep the battery constantly charged from the mains while I operate the computer so that the charge level always remains at 100% OR
2) I should charge only intermittently i.e., I should use the laptop without charging the battery for some length of time and charge only when the battery charge level falls below say 30% or when the reminder pops up for charging the battery?
I normally use the computer for around 4 to 5 hours every day and often at one go.
Thanking You
Yours faithfully

Hello Everyone,

Unit was sluggish so I decided to format hard drive and reinstall XP Home which it came with originally. All good except now the unit will not charge the battery, sits at 0% all of the time. Battery is rather new with about 5 recharges on it, did not have a problem as it held charge easily for 3.5 hours until I did the repair and XP installation. Computer runs fine plugged in so I don't have a clue why battery won't charge. Could it be that I erased a partition that held something battery related? I updated the BIOS, still no luck. Batteries need to work for their living so I suggest you switch off mains power at night, let it charge it's batteries and work with them the following day until they run low, then switch to mains again so they can charge while you're still working.

I have a Dell Latitude D600 that works fine with only the AC Adapter. It will not charge the battery and the charging LEDs flash 4 times orange and then once green.
In the power manager it has a red X over the battery symbol and stays at 0%. In the BIOS power manage it says battery status is "idle".
So the first thing I did was replace the the battery with a brand new identical battery.....I get the same thing.
After reading DELL forums and bulletins, it was recommended that I replace the DC jack on the MB...I did, I get the same thing.

Also, when booting I get "The AC Power Adapter type cannot be determined. This will prevent optimal system performance."
So I try a known working/identical AC adapter.....same thing.

What's next?? Bad MB? Maybe?
Any and all replies are appreciated.
Thanks

Answer:Laptop not charging battery

Try re-seating the power cable the other way.....if this doesn't work, you may have to contact dell as it could be a MB issue.

I have had a Y50-70 for about 2 years now.  Just in the past 2 weeks i started having issues with my loptop not charging at all when plugged in.  It finally stopped charging and when i investigated it i found that the connector for the charging jack was burned at the connector to the motherboard.  I ordered a new one and had no issues installing it.  After waiting about an hour, because my battery was dead, i turned on my laptop to a partially charged battery.  Unfortunately the battery only charges when my laptop is off.  I have looked into this all over the internet and havent found any good answers.  I have tried to toggled between power saving modes, some reprted that this helped, to no avail.  I then tried to see if the energy manager was the issue and it was not installed on my laptop.  While i was checking out the energy mode, i also uninstalled the battery drivers through device manager, the smart one not the basic driver, and updated all drivers and the bios, but that didnt help either.Next i replaced the batter and hcraging cable, but still no help.  I now have another charging port cable on the way hoping that maybe the last one was bad. While i was waiting for my cable, i thought i would reach out here and ask if anyone has had this issue and has a fix for it.  I looked through the batter thread and didnt see anything like mine. Can anyone help?

My Laptop's battery does not charging, and I bought another battery , but also the same problem, and also not charging when laptop is on or off. My laptop properties:-HP Notebook 15 r107-newindows 10 64bit  what is the causes , and what is the solving?

Answer:Laptop Battery does not charging

Is it a genuine HP battery or a "compatible" 3rd party battery? Have you tried going into the UEFI diagnostics (F2 as you power up) and run the battery diagnostic tool on both batteries and report what is found.

I have noticed lately that my battery for my laptop is always charging and is now hot to the touch. I have an Averatec 3260 series laptop. I purchased it three years ago and I have never had a problem with my battery until now. I hardly ever use the battery except for brief moments, so it never fully discharges and then recharges. I have calibrated it twice within the three years. Why would it constantly be charging now? My computer says that it is on 100% power and the battery isn't charging, but it still is getting that charge.
Any help would be great.

I recently completely discharged my thinkpad R40e laptop battery using the software provided by IBM, nw it won't charge at all. Is there anything I can do to rescue the battery or is it totally knackered.

Answer:Laptop Battery not charging

Check the battery stated voltage, then temporarily carefully connect wires to it, observing polarity. Then connect external batteries to the wires and connect the charger.

Hello,
I have an Acer Aspire 5534-1096, and the battery will not charge, no matter what I try. If I plug the charger in without the battery inserted, the laptop will run perfectly fine. But, as the battery will not charge and is now dead, if I insert the battery with the AC adapter plugged in the laptop will power on for a few seconds, then will just die. I have tried replacing the battery; the issue persists. I know that the AC adapter works because the laptop will run solely off of it, and it will charge the battery of another laptop perfectly fine. I've tried reinstalling the BIOS with the latest version and holding the power button to release excess power. Nothing seems to fix it.
Do you think this could be a motherboard problem? I have removed the keyboard and shell, and there seems to be a cable in front of the DC power jack which says "TO I/O". Could it be an issue with that cable? I'm all ears, so if any of you has a suggestion that might work, that would be greatly appreciated. I'll post this with a picture of the I/O cable in front of the DC connector.
Thanks!

Answer:Laptop Battery not Charging

Hi johamanee24 and welcome to TSG.

Hard to tell exactly which cable you mean. The silver coloured cable comes from the screen, the red and black (and possibly white, can't see for sure) wires with the black sleeve with 125C on it carry the power from the DC socket to the motherboard and it looks like they connect underneath it. Not sure if the I/O label applies to those wires or not.

The trouble is the laptop wouldn't power on (without the battery in) if those wires were not connecting properly.

There's a lot of similar stuff on the 'Net about this but fitting a new battery is the recommended solution.
Was the 2nd battery you tried new ?

I am becoming more and more concerned about my laptop's battery each and every passing day. When I check the bottom right of my computer screen to check if my computer battery is completely charged, it says "0% available (plugged in, not charging)". I have had to buy two new batteries because of the same thing and they also read "0% available (plugged in, not charging)". When I unplug my laptop from the power source, it turns off automatically. I cannot even bother calling Dell to check this issue for me because I bought this computer off the street for $35.

My question in general is how do I get this problem fixed and how do I keep an eye on how my laptop computer charges correctly (or not)???

HP g6-1b60us Notebook PCHere is the situation and symptoms. Battery not charging. Battery icon indicates battery being charged, but it sits at 5%. Have bought a replacement HP battery and that battery will not charge also (it sits at 50%, which I assume is the initial charge it came with). Run the HP Support Assistant and both batteries fail the test saying that cell 4 is bad (cells 1 to 3 have charge, but cell 4 has a 0 reading, even in the new battery). (Is there a problem accessing/charging cell 4?)When the battery is installed and the AC adaptor is unplugged, and the laptop is turned off, the battery charge LED shows a white LED (red/amber indicates that it is charging the battery); now the only time the LED goes out is when the battery is physically removed. Before the problem began, the battery charge LED would be off when the battery was installed and the charger was not being used. Now the battery charge LED goes off only when the battery is physically removed. What I have tried:Cleaned the contacts.Bought a new HP battery.Tried the complete discharge method of turning the laptop off, removing the power cord and battery and holding the power on key for over 30 seconds.Have done safe restarts.Reset to HP recommended settings.Suggestions/recommendations?

Hi if anyone can help i would be so greatful!!

I have a laptop which slows down as soon as i plug it into the mains. When running on batteries it is as fast as it should be and is perfect. I could comprehend the problem if it was the otherway around but this is too wierd.

I have rebooted the wholes system, it is clean as a whistle, over 30G of space, Virus checker / Firewall / ADaware remover / Registry cleaner / Defraged / Disk Cleanup - everything is in working order to keep this machine clean and healthy and it is.

The problem is most apparent when watching movies or clips, as the image goes out of sinc with the sound, freezes or goes super-slow, yet as soon as i remove the plug, and it's running on batteries it's fine again.

I know someone out there must have a solution.

thanks

Answer:Laptop runs slow when plugged in, but fine on battery power

Do you have access to another power cord to try. It kind of sounds like that there is a problem with the one that you have. I suppose that the problem could be internal to the laptop itself, but the swapping with a known good cord would tell you where the problem is. Of course, if you always use the same wall outlet, the problem could be there.

Hi, I'm having problems charging my gateway laptop unless I wiggle the charging pin and power brick a certain way. I have tried replacing the charger and battery. It doesn't help. Also If I run on straight AC with no battery the laptop will shut off if it moves due to the contact problem. Does any one know why this happening?

Thanks for the Help.

Answer:Laptop has problems with charging unless I wiggle the charging pin.

how old is the laptop sounds like your ac in port has de-soldered from the psu part of the motherboard. its the most common thing to break on laptops since they get a lot of stress from the cables pulling on them or they are built cheap either way. is is it still in warranty?

I recently replaced my Toshiba laptop battery as it was not recognised by the laptop (power meters and % of battery remaining etc), so I bought a replacement Toshiba battery thinking the first one had died of old age and worn out!!!However, my new Toshiba battery is not working either, so I guess something is wrong with my laptop. I've reinistalled Windows XP from disc provided but this has not fixed the problem. So I think it's a hardware fault I need to fix.Does anyone know how I can fit the problem inside the laptop. It's a Toshiba Satellite Pro M70.Many thanksMatt

Answer:New Toshiba Laptop Battery - Still not charging

Laptop Battery not showing Charging1. Turn off the computer, 2. Take the battery out 3. Take out the power supply 4. Push the power button down for 30 seconds. 5. Reconnect power supply 6. Then the battery. Should now show 100% charged. This is because sometimes the mother board gets static and this clears it and the reason it showed not charging was beacuse it was fully charged. Also try cleaning the battery contact areas on the laptop.

Hey guys,
I have an Acer Aspire 5741-6073, and it would not charge past 40%, even with the power cord plugged in for several hours. I reported the issue to acer, they asked me to drain the battery then press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to discharge any remaining charge. Then while the laptop is off leave it plugged in and charging for a couple of hours.

I did this, but t did not work, so I sent the laptop back to Acer. They claimed they fixed the issue, but my laptop only charges to 50-59% now. I am positive the meter is not reading properly, because it lasts 2-3 hours when starting on 40-50%. Is there a way to fix this issue? or to recalibrate the battery?

Thanks,
JKDManoj

Answer:Laptop Battery not charging past x %

Hi! JKDManoj, welcome to 7F

So far I have found this, the last set of numbers don't match, but here is the information on charging it, notice where I underlined it:

Quote:
The dell Aspire 5741G-334G50Mn battery packs isn't charging. What's the deal? New dell Aspire 5741G-334G50Mn battery packs is shipped in a discharged condition and must charged before use. We generally recommend an overnight charge (approximately twelve hours). Refer to the user's manual for charging instructions. Rechargeable dell laptop batteries should be cycled - fully charged and then fully discharged - two to four times initially to allow them to reach their full capacity. (Note: it is normal for a dell Aspire 5741G-334G50Mn battery packs to become warm to the touch during charging and discharging).

New dell laptop batteries are hard for the device to charge; they have never been fully charged and are therefore "unformed". Sometimes the device's charger will stop charging a new dell Aspire 5741G-334G50Mn battery packs before it is fully charged.

If this happens, remove the battery from the device and then reinsert it. The charge cycle should begin again. This may happen several times during the first battery charge. Don't worry; it's perfectly normal.

Hello I have a Gateway model 6510GZ
I have used it briefly in the past with no problems. It has sat for about 2 months. I powered it up and it runs fine. Went to charge battery and nothing. Laptop does not indicate charging nor does it run off of AC. Once the battery is dead it will not run at all. I disassembled the thing and checked that it was recieving the voltage from the AC power supply. Didnt see any type of on-board fuses, but everything is so small I may have missed it.
Any help or ideals?

Dell Vostro 1510 laptop.  Message states, "Plugged in, not charging". I've installed new DELL battery and charger. Immediately shuts down when unpluged. Tried removing battery and holding power button on for a minute then reinstalling battery.

Answer:Vostro Laptop Battery Not Charging

If the new battery and charger haven't solved the problem, it's the mainboard that's faulty.

I own a Toshiba Satellite P25 running Windows XP SP2.

I'm in a funny situation regarding my battery/battery charging that I've never heard about...I recently purchased a new battery because my old one wasn't holding a charge. The battery WILL charge but only when the laptop is powered off or in standby. When the power cord is inserted, the instant I power on, the charge light turns off. I've checked the power while in Windows and it reads "AC power, discharging" instead of "charging." On very rare occasions, the charge light on the laptop will remain on for a while after I turned off the computer but will eventually go out.

I've tried playing with the amount of plug I insert into the laptop, but it makes no difference. I'm suspecting it's a hardware problem with the actual port inside the laptop, like maybe it's loose? But that doesn't explain (IMO) why it only charges when the power is off. Or is it likely to be the power cord itself?

I'd love to hear what you pros think. Thanks in advance!

I have just bought a new battery for my Dell laptop. I left it to charge all night. Now it says battery 43% available, plugged in, not charging. Can you advise please?

Answer:My new laptop battery is not fully charging

Run it flat a couple of times and ensure it charges as full as it can. It is probably just a calibration error. There is sometimes a battery calibration facility in the BIOS.
