Recover Deleted Spanned Volume

Question: Recover Deleted Spanned Volume

A friend of mine, not me, accidently deleted a spanned volume, One of the disks is an IBM Deskstar 80GB and the other is a Maxtor 200GB with 8M Buffer. The Spanned volume was a total of 190 GB (using unallocated space from both). The volume was deleted using the MMC utility from windows. I was wondering if there is any software out there that would me, not me, my friend, recover the data that was in it.

Preferred Solution: Recover Deleted Spanned Volume

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I accidentally deleted my portable hard drive volume when messing around with Disk Management on Windows 7. The hard drive is formatted using FAT32 and is about 120GB. Is there any way to recover it? I have all media and some important documents in there. Any help would be really appreciated.

Thank you.

Answer:Help recover deleted volume

Hi,

You can use the undelete option in a 3rd party partition manager. As long as you haven't attempted to change that partition in any way other than delete it, should work fine.

If you have a partition Manager - see if it has that option. Post back and let me know.

Hi I had 2 external hard drives connected and in disk manager I clicked delete on the wrong one? So now the drive wont show up, so I simply created a Simple volume and know it is a RAW drive? How do I recover the files there was over 100GB and some of them are really important such as records and work related stuff, it is currently a RAW partition and all the hard disk recovery softwares dont recognise it because it is a RAW drive? do i have to format it to recover the files? Please Help!?!

Answer:*Important* Accidently deleted volume in Disk Manager, how to recover?

Do not format the disk.
this would make your task more difficult or even impossible.

There are free partition recovery tools available on the net.

Question the deletion, was it your operating system or are you still able to boot into Windows. I have never been in this position but someone will post some software for you. Just don't muddle the disk any further.

If you are able to boot into Windows this link will give you an idea of what you are looking for. Hang on because I know some forum members have done this will be suggesting more software.

Hi all,

First I'd like to say that I'm an idiot, I just deleted my spanned volume . I'm about to run the MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition v8.1.1 (free version), and just wanted to run this by you guys so I don't mess it up even more. Here's the setup I had that I am trying to recover.

Code:
Disk 0 - 1T Spanned volume (F:)
Disk 1 - 64G NTFS System, Boot drive (C:)
Disk 2 - 1T Spanned volume (F:)
Disk 3 - 1T Spanned volume (F:)
Disk 4 - 1T Spanned volume (F:)
... a few others that don't matter
Disk 9 - 2.5 T iSCSI Spanned volume (F:)
So, I was trying to pull the iSCSI Disk 9 off the other spanned volumes on F:. I did a Delete Volume, and they all disappeared. Was I supposed to use Shrink Volume? Anyway, there were a lot of threads about recovering partitions, but none of them I saw had spanned volumes. Is recovering a spanned volume the same as recovering a single partition, multiple times? Or is there something I'm missing?

I am in the MiniTool Partition Wizard, and I see all of the disks that I want to recover. However, it doesn't allow me to select multiple disks. So the only option that I have with this tool is to go through the recovery process on each disk individually. Is this the right method? If so, how do I get the full spanned volume back after each disk is recovered?

Thanks in advance!
-cyberyoda

Answer:Spanned Volume Recovery

Just a quick update. I've been scanning the disks for partition data using the MiniTool, and it's come back with some strange results. Disk 0 shows an abnormally large partition. And after a long while of scanning, I haven't found any partitions on the other disks yet.

Even though the first disk is 931.51GB, after finding the partition, the MiniTool is displaying it as a capacity of 6167.3GB (the sum of the entire spanned volume). Does this mean disk 0 holds the partition data for all 5 disks, and recovery of this will undelete the partition on all disks?

Thanks again!

So here's the situation: I have two 320GB disks that were setup as a spanned volume under XP Pro, hanging off a third-party PCI SATA controller. That controller has died. I know in theory, I should be able to replace it in the machine and the volume will still be there. However, this system MAY be totally dead... and putting it all back together will be a pain either way.

Is it possible to recover the volume by plugging both drives into a new machine using USB-SATA docks or external cases?? And if so, HOW?

Hi,

I have a spanned volume setup with 4 drives. One of the drives is starting to throw read errors which is preventing WHS from backing it up (Yikes!).

Is it possible to clone the drive with the errors and to reinsert a new drive into the array?

Can the new drive be bigger?

Thanks!

Answer:Can I clone a drive from a spanned volume?

You may end up cloning the errors as well. An imaging program capable of handling all four drives at once like the Acronis True Image server edition would be able to handle Dynamic volumes if that's what you are working with there.

The best time for any imaging however is while everything is working 100% to make your backup of the entire setup just in case something like this comes up. The imaging program used would back up each block to be restored on the new identical replacement drive in order to work.

I have a system with a spanned volume of five 2TB disks. Actually, the "disks" are all iSCSI targets (since Windows XP won't see targets >2047GB on my QNAP array)... but in any case, Windows shows all the disks as being present and the spanned volume as being "Healthy"... it just doesn't appear to be formatted any longer. The array itself (RAID5 with a hot spare) shows as healthy, and the SMART on all the physical drives shows fine as well. So all the components look to be good, I've just lost the NTFS structure.

Any suggestions on how to recover??

Help!

I had three 2TB drive spanned together into a single volume for all my media files. I had the hose on my liquid cooler break and dump all the coolant on one of the drives. It, obviously, is toast.

Now, I would like to get the data of the remaining two.

I have run two different recovery software suites (Easeus and File Scavenger) on them and only find about 1TB of data.

Is there any other way or did I really lose 4 TB of data?

Thanks!

Evan

Answer:Recovering data from a spanned volume

Wow, This was posted a long time ago. I think you may have already solved your problem, but Spanned volumes take the first disk, fill it and moves on to the next disk. For example:
If the 2TB drive that got trashed was the first, well you're ****ed.
If it was second, and no more than the drives capacity was full, you're ok.
If it was 3rd and untouched, you are good to go.
Word of advice: DO NOT FORMAT

Hey all,

I had a question regarding a spanned volume versus RAID 0.

I understand that RAID 0 uses stripping, and for that reason, if one HDD dies you lose the data of the entire array. However, what I don't understand is why people suggest the same fate if you lose a single drive in a spanned volume setup. Even the Wikipedia page for spanned volumes states that "if any disk fails, the data on the whole volume could be lost." The entire volume? That doesn't sound right to me...

My understanding of a spanned volume is that most files would only be on one drive or the other, and very rarely split. So, if one drive fails, the data loss would be very limited. I always assumed that with a spanned volume, data would just be written to where ever there's free space, so splitting files between multiple drives would only happen when free space is low. Are my assumptions wrong? Do files frequently get split between multiple drives? Or is that just some over exaggerated caution?

Answer:Spanned volume versus RAID 0 ?

That's due directly to the type of RAID setup you have...so for basic RAID setup (2 HDD's) that copies data on to both HDDs, you should use RAID 1. This method will allow you to remove any failed drives and replace with new drive and data will be transferred automatically with no data loss.

"The attempted operation is invalid. Either the parameters specified are invalid or the operation cannot be completed on the selected object."

I cannot seem to locate info on how to correct this. These are brand new drives and if I create simple volume on them it formats fine. I dont understand why this isnt working. Can anyone help?

When you create the simple volume, everything works fine. Right after that, try converting it to a dynamic volume. Then, worry about setting up the mirror.

Hello all.

I have been researching this to no avail.

Here is the TL DR;

Old computer died which had two 400GB sata drives that houses a lot of family pictures and MP3s. The drives were dynamic and a 745 GB volume spanned across the drives. I now know these drives are also RAID-0, but I wanted to see if I could see any data on them and I had a USB sata dock. Learned the hard lesson that a dynamic disk wont be visible via USB no matter what (at the time I didnt know it was also a RAID-0) . I put the drive (which just happened to be the first drive) in my dock and somehow the drive got corrupted and became a basic disk. Pop up came asking if I wanted to format which of course I didn't. Odd thing is that the partition is intact (745GB) which causes the issue of not allowing me to convert it back to dynamic. It would seem if somehow I could just get it back to dynamic everything would work again or would be a heck of a lot easier to repair.

The issue is I cannot convert directly back to dynamic because it appears I don't have enough "free space" due to the partition reporting a 745GB volume which is correct.

I have tried multiple pieces of software mostly from Acronis, EASEUS, and Runtime (Disk Director, GetDataBack NTFS, Raid Recovery for Windows, and Data Recovery Wizard). Problem is these products don't fully solve the problem and I cannot reliably get the data off. The one product Runtime does have is raid reconstructor - but I am not ready to spend ... Read more

Hello,

I just bought myself an HDD docking station, and following instructions on lifehacker, tried to create a spanned volume, so that I can use two spare Western Digital 500Gb HDDs as a single 1Tb HDD.

All seemed to go OK until the last point, when I got an error "The operation is not supported by the object"

The two drives are fine, and the dock seems to work fine. I can format the two drives individually, and they show up in File Explorer correctly, but I can't crate a spanned volume.

Anyone any ideas? Thanks

Answer:Create new spanned volume - Operation not supported by object

I would not bother. Spanned drives are PITA to backup, and if one fails life gets complicated.

I'm getting "incorrect password or not a truecrypt volume" when I attempt to mount one of my files.

I've had this happen once before a few years ago. Both times I used a keyfile and a password, then after a few days I'm unable to mount it. All other times I normally only used a password and never had any problems. Is there something about using keyfiles that causes issues?

I have multiple original copies of the keyfile I used and tried them all with no luck. I hadn't backed up the volume header yet. Luckily I have a full backup. But it's a week out of date and I've lost a good 80+ hours of work.

Does anyone know what the deal is and some way to fix this?

Note to forum: Not trying to crack, I have my password and keyfile. Just really need to fix my file.

If anyone can help at all it'd be Greatly appreciated. Thanks

Answer:Recover Truecypt Volume?

keyfiles are tricky. ive also had issues with using keyfiles with truecrypt. im not sure if windows adds any additional info to the files sometimes, like updates "last modified" or "date created" data, which would change the hash value of the file. its kind of a PITA, but if i ever feel the need to use a keyfile, i burn it to CD first so that it can not be changed. unless you are hiding from the government though, a strong password is all you need. never had this problem on linux.

I had two other partition drives containing important files on the same USB HD and they were still being recognized and accessible. hi,

i have a single hard drive with 2 partitions. 1st partition with win7 OS and the second strictly for data.
yesterday i decided to try software raid using windows disk management.
firstly, i added another identical but empty hard drive into the computer. boot it up and went into disk management. i right-clicked on the 2nd partition (data partition) on the original hard drive, and selected add mirror. after a few seconds, the disk management tell me an error "failed redundancy" on both my old 2nd partition and the hard drive i just added. so without thinking much, i decided to delete volume on the new hard drive (bad move!), and guess what, it deleted the new hard drive volume together with the original hard drive's 2nd partition (contains data!). now it is showing as unallocated space and i have not format nor create a new volume over it.(i think the data is still intact)

is there anyway to recover the volume? please help!

*i know there is a fix within windows using dmdiag but that is for non-mirror volume(dynamic disk) only. also tried with easeus partition master but still unable to recover the partition as it is a dynamic disk.

*minitool partition recovery doesnt work either for dynamic disk..any other recommendation?

Answer:Recover deleted mails

Sorry, you're out of luck

Didn't the "incredimail software" have warnings before you deleted your emails? If it did NOT, uninstall that software, it's unsafe.

You do not state what email client you use, unless it IS "incredimail." If it is Outlook 2002 or 2003, download and use the Microsoft Outlook PST Backup Utility.

It will add Backup to Outlook's File menu.

The backup will run after closing Outlook (you cannot backup PSTs while in-use).

The backup interface allows you to set a backup filename (if you don't want default), and location (path). For path I highly suggest you not use defaults, put your PST backups in a separate location like My Documents, or (better) on another HD. WARNING - you must specify filenames (optional) and paths for each PST, you should have an Outlook.pst & Archive.pst if you do archive your emails.

The backup interface also allows you to schedule when to backup, and the dialog will open on Outlook exit, on schedule. At work I set every 3-days.

At home I do not use MS Office but since I image my D:\APPS05 drive (includes my email client) every month, I can recover from that.

Oye. Where to start. I had a problem on my comptuer, so I had to reinstall XP. All is well. I have "roaming profiles" set up on a "server" [really is just my profile on a XP Pro machine w/ a big hard drive]. They are on their own partition. I set my new install machine profile point to the place where it should be. I wanted to use it right away and not wait for it to copy the 12gb of My Documents to my computer at the moment, so I moved them to a different folder. I logged on, and did what I wanted to do. Then I moved My Documents back to the profile folder on the server. Logged off of my computer and logged back on. My Documents is GONE! Apparently, since when I logged on there wasn't a My Documents, and when I logged off, it was there, Windows thought it would get rid of it...and it did. I tried several data recovery programs, and only one was able to recover some of my files, but about 90% of them are useless. A document is just a bunch of ??Ya94~9??A ect ect. Answer:Recover deleted files

It's possible the filles may still be there. First try to undelete in your recycle bin. If that's a no go, there are a few commercial recovery programs out there. The only way you can possibily undelete files that have already been deleted in the recycle bin is using such a program provided the files have not been overwritten. If you write something to the same disk it doesn't necessarily mean your deleted files have been overwritten.
If a file recovery program doesn't work, they're gone forever.

Hi,

I've done a stupid stupid stupid thing and lost an important excel spreadsheet that I last used about two weeks ago. I've been having various performance problems (freezes/crashes) and was advised to run "Malwarebytes' anti-malware".

Before I did this, I backed up all my data to a CD-ROM and then deleted the files from my laptop. Then I went ahead and ran the software. The good news: my laptop seems to be behaving itself far better now. The bad news: somehow I seem to have missed this one file when backing up. I've got all my family photos, lots of stuff from work, even old stuff that I'll probably never need again but I thought "What the heck". Yet somehow, I've missed this one spreadsheet. I could kick myself!!

To make matters (probably) worse, I've run CCleaner a couple of times since then, as I was advised that it keeps the laptop clean. I've just looked at some settings there now and it's using "Normal" file deletion as opposed to "Secure", but "Wipe Free Space" is selected. Damn!

I only realised I'd lost the file last night and I have already downloaded some freeware utilities such as "Restoration" and "Undelete Plus", but none of these found the file.

Should I just give up now? Or is there some software that may find a file even after CCleaner has been run.

Grateful for any help.

Answer:how to recover deleted files

Do a Google search for "File Recovery" and you will find hundreds (actually millions) of links to software that will do what you want. Bear in mind, though, a hard disk that has been in constant use (reading and writing) will have over-written many of the files (or parts of the files) and those will not be recoverable.

I had a flash drive with .pdf files among others on it. Once I inserted the drive, the compuer would ask me whether or not I wanted to scan the drive because some errors were found. I chose not to scan it. The drive opened fine. But the next time I inserted the drive and chose not to scan it, the drive opened but half the files were gone. To recover the files, I was recommended to use "virtual Lab" recovery software. This program scanned the drive and found some files and saved them into a folder called "Raw Files". Inside of it there are several folders. One of them is of interest to me as it is called Adobe Acrobat Documents There are .pdf files and they probably are the ones I am looking for but when try to open them with the  Adobe Acrobat reader, the message says that they cannot be opened because            "they were either not supported or, damaged, for example, sent in e-mail and incorrectly decoded"My question: is there anything that could be done to bring these files back to life at this point? Simple answer is" No" You have already used a software program to recover some files. That may be as much as you can do. In theory, flash drives are supposed to be very reliable. But many users report they fail more often than they shooed.IMHO the best way to store files is on a good  quality eternal drive. Prices vary.

Today I deleted sixteen files that I needed - they weren't sent to the recycle bin as I usually hold down shift and delete together so I don't have to empty the recycle bin often. I know there are many file recovery programs available that you have to pay for, but as I only need to recover around 16 files I was wondering if any of you knew about a deleted file recovery program which was free, even if it was for a limited time. I tried downloading some demos but they either only allowed small files to be recovered or didn't let you recover any files without paying.

The files I deleted were no more than 100k/b, and I use Windows 98 SE. Anybody know of any recover deleted file programs that would help me?

Answer:Recover Deleted Files

There are no demo or free programs for recovering files. It there were then the one's out there couldn't charge an arm and a leg. Do you have any backups? Sorry

I have deleted some of my important files by mistake. It is not there in recycle bin as it was cleared by my friend . What I do now? Is there any way to recover it?

Answer:How to recover deleted files?

Hi, first thing is as soon as the files are deleted from the recycle bin their disk space is available to be overwritten. Therefore they may be recoverable, corrupted or unrecoverable.

You can try a program such as Recuva (free)- there are many.
Do not install it on the drive or partition from which you are trying to recover files.

Such programs usually offer two levels of scanning- deep scanning is slow, so specify what to scan carefully.

Obvious lesson: back up.

There are many backup programs at a file level, and then there's the strongly recommended approach of disk imaging.

Disk imaging even allows you to restore Windows if it is unbootable as it was when the image was created- and also to a new hard disk. E.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage.

Images also act as a full backup- you can extract files too.

I deleted accidentally mi PST file. Installed several recovery programs (Recuva, Recover My Files, Stellar Phoenix Win Data Recovery, Active @ Undeleted, Pandora Recovery) and none of them show the deleted file in the original folder.I even made a new test, deleted an old copy of my PST located in the same folder and run all programs without making any changes in the hard drive and cannot view the PST file in the deleted file list. Both files were deleted with shift+del and the size was 500Mb aprox. Running Win XP.How can this be possible? Is there any way I can recover the deleted file?

Answer:Cannot recover deleted pst file

Johnw its a local copy of .pst or there would be no need for recovery software.Flox15 you should never install software when trying to recover a file. You run the recovery software from a usb or cd boot disk. This prevents the file from being partially or fully overwritten.Another aspect is how much free space do you have? If not much then a deleted file can be overwritten immediately. There is also the issue of a corrupt file table. You run chkdsk /f to correct this. But all of this sounds too late in your situation.Answers are only as good as the information you provide. How to properly post a question: Sorry no tech support via PM's

Let me start by saying I am NOT a computer geek, I had old videos for my late Father and my family saved at a portable hard drive and I was not aware it was deleted by mistake when my little one was playing on the computer; unfortunately I saved other files on the same hard drive.

I downloaded Recuva software to recover deleted videos and was able to recover some but when I tried to open them with window media player, it gave me an error message that says: Windows Media Player can not play the file. The Player mightnot support the file type or might not support the codec that was used tocompress the file. I can’t play it with real player too.

Thevideos were made by Sony camcorder between 2007 and 2009, unfortunately I don’t know the camcorder model to down load the software that came with it.
I would really appreciate any help

My computer became infected with a virus, infostealer.banpaes that norton 2006 seemed unable to get rid of.

I decided to simply reinstall XP pro, onto my 10gb C partition, while maintaining my files on the other two 50gb partitions (drive is 120gb sata). I'd done this countless times before just to clean out the system from time to time and didn't think too much of it.

When I booted up into XP installer and got to the point where i would need to delete the C partition and reformat it, I didn't notice until too late that somehow my 3 separate partitions now looked like one 120gb partition to the windows installer (something that had never happend before).

Before it fully dawned on me, I deleted my C partition, effectively deleting the entire drive.

Not sure what to do, I made another 10gb partition, installed XP pro, and now am wondering how I can recover the files from my lost 50gb partitions.

Is this possible without having to employ some expensive recovery software or recovery service?

The files lost are not earth shatteringly essential, but quite a few of them are ones I will truly miss.

Any ideas on anything I can do? Or should I just let go and move on?

Thanks

Hi, priya sehgal. Welcome to TSF!

Recovering files is easy to do and you can easily do it by using Recuva (which you'll find a link for in my signature, it's highlighted dark brown/redish).

Here's a beginner's guide on recovering files with Recuva[1].

Hello

Are you working in a Microsoft exchange environment? ie at work!
If not I do not think you can get it back.

If you are then do the following:

Highlight the deleted items folder. Click Tools>recover deleted items. Alist of emails should appear. Find your email and highlight it. Right click and choose restore or click the restore button. It should return to your deleted items folder.

Good luck.

Let me know your outcome please.

Hello Guys!

I was at a friends last weekend and rebuilt his computer. Two new hard disks were to be used and everything to be reinstalled. When finished, the last step was to transfer his data from the old hard disk. I removed the backup hard disk from the mobile rack and in went the old one. When everything had been copied over, I asked "are you sure that nothing is hidden somewhere?". "I'm sure" was the answer and I deleted the single partition on the old hard disk. Luckily, before I had a chance to create a new partition, he said "well, not really, I forgot, is it too late?".

I thought it was too late, unless some recovery software was purchased but I spent the best part of an hour on the Internet searching for freeware. Finally, I found TestDisk which comes in two flavours, DOS and Windows. I used the Windows based version and managed to recover the deleted partition.

Just thought I'd let you know ...... ...... but I have no idea what would have happened if I had created a new partition and formated!

Answer:Recover deleted partition !!

I don't think there's a possibility of recovering the whole drive, maybe he should be lucky to recover the file he wants to.

On one of my laptops I recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. Usually when I upgrade it automatically creates a Windows.Old folder in my C Drive where I can access all my files from before the upgrade. But this time there was no Windows.Old folder. So I downloaded and ran a file recovery program...it found 0 old deleted files. I ran that same program on a different laptop and it worked fine. So where could the deleted files have went and how can I access them?

Answer:Can't Recover Deleted Files

Upgrades do not delete any files. They would be in the same location as they were when you left them.

If you did not upgrade, but installed a fresh copy of 7, the files are most likely underneath the OS and lost. The installation of the OS uses about twice the drive space that the final installation uses, so everything would have been written over.

Have a customer whose husband inadvertently deleted an important folder in outlook express and the program was set to empty deleted on exit xp.Have all the dbx files on cd at my place   need to get him out of the dog house. Thanks!

Answer:Recover deleted OE folder?

Just for your info, the file "folders.dbx" in the user's "Store Folder" maps the actual folders visible in Outlook Express to the DBX files that hold the messages for each of those folders.  Folders.dbx is automatically regenerated by OE if it is deleted, which is sometimes used as a fix for a corrupt folders.dbx file. Each of the DBX database files represents a separate folder or sub-folder and contains all the messages in that folder.DBX Files can be opened using OE-Mail Recovery utility http://www.oemailrecovery.com/outlook-express-recovery.htmlIt is a standalone program that opens the DBX file in a rough approximation of the OE message view and allows you to open emails, save attachments, and save out as many messages as you want to the *.eml format used by OE.  You can drag and drop *.eml files from a folder into a newly created folder in OE again and they are then embedded into the DBX file created for your new folder. You should be aware that the "Deleted Items.dbx" file normally still retains all deleted messages UNTIL it is "compacted". OE is set to prompt the user to compact database folders on the 100th time it is closed.  The folder that was deleted from within OE may still be inside "Deleted Items.dbx", but probably only viewable as separate messages rather than as a separate folder containing messages, so your best bet is the DBX file you backed up.Please also be aware that copying a DBX fi... Hello
I used to have almost an entire hard drive (50 gb) worth of .wmv files (ripped my dvd collection). I had to delete all of it since I thought I would need the space for other files. That turned out not to be necessary so now I'm wondering if there is a way to get that data back. The entire folder was deleted - I think Windows said it was too big to put in the bin. I did not do any other work on that drive since.

I tried using some popular recovery programs: Recuva, Undelete plus, restore but they don't seem to get a trace of the files. Instead they display some bizzare files which appear to be from a previous windows instalation. Now I find it unlikely that the entire collection of over 100 hundred files would just dissappear without a trace. So maybe I'm doing something wrong or using the wrong software? I'd appreciate a hand.

I have an old toshiba laptop from back when I was in high school. I took a ton of pictures and videos from all kinds of trips and stuff. Well I deleted some videos a long time ago, like within 6 months of having the laptop (2007).

Anyway. Long story short I would like to recover the videos and pictures. I understand that there are programs like gary undelete. I need something that is free, and something that can hopefully find these. It is my understanding that these video files could have been overwritten over long periods of time, but is this true? Could they be totally unrecoverable? Or is there a way to unlock these videos?

Answer:How to Recover Old Deleted Video?

Seeing as how it's been 5 years or so, your chances of any recovery of those files would appear to be slim or none.

You could take the HD to recovery experts but the cost might be $100's of dollars with no guarantee of usability.

Hi-

I accidentally started to install a new version of XP Home on an existing partition that had a good working XP home on it. I got to the point on the install where it highlighted the good partition and I hit "L" to erase it. At that point I stopped and tried a repair from the XP Home disk but no luck. Since it didn't overwrite it (probably just erased some pointers) is there any way to get back the good partition/OS that was on this disk?

Here's the scenario folks:

~Used disk quota to minimize too much usage of the hard disk drive (my sister uses a LOT of the hard disk with her music, pictures, etc. that she doesn't browse after a week or so. >_<)

~I put up the limit to 20GB, and if there was anything exceeding it, the quota would deny adding data to that certain user.

I am using Windows 8.1 and wanting to get advice on a utility (either freeware or paid-for version-or even if one exists at all) which has the ability to restore files/folders once they have been deleted from the recycle bin.
I realise that there are oodles of utilities on the web which claim they can restore deleted files, and I have tested a few out; I now am having serious doubts that a restoration tool exists at all.
With every tool I tried out, it asks where the file?s original location was, then after initiating a search some files are found; here?s where things get interesting ? every file which is found already exists on the H/D and hasn?t even been deleted at all.
Is a undeleting tool simply media hype?
Has anyone used a ?undelete? utility which successfully does what it?s meant to?

Hi all,

I wanted to check the history of a folder in windows explorer (not IE), I downloaded a index.dat viewer but it only shows a few days history I need it from last week. I only found out about index.dat from a google search I am no expert, it does show the history of the folder I am looking for but not far back enough, I do use Ccleaner to delete files, but how can I recover the old history wirh free software please!

Thanks

Answer:Recover deleted history

Chances are that you can't. But what exactly do you want to recover? Files, a list of files, or what?

Ccleaner removes many things that can be useful for recoveries. Backup files, though useless if unused, of course, are created for a reason. Ccleaner should be used sparingly, if at all, and never use the registry part.

i was using this ACDSee Classic picture program to to view and delete a lot of photos about 8GB 27,500 pix worth. and i noticed these 2 .jpg files in the folder with all the other ones that had no image properties and had no picture to view even though they were about 120KB in size.. so i decided to delete them becuz they were corrupt i guess.. so apon deleting them the ACDSee app froze or something so I had to terminate its process from the task manager.. then when i went back to the picture folder it said that there were only 21,476 Files now with a total of 1.96GB of used space.. so this ACDSee picture app just deleted over 6GB of my Photos..
i tried a system restore but it wouldnt give me back my photos.. and then ended up somehow loosing all my system restore poins after that..???
i have the recycle bin turned off so all files are deleted instead of being moved to the bin..
Is there any app that can get me back my deleted photos..???

I can open the import in outlook express and find the path where the deleted items.dbx is but it give me an error because I have outlook express open to do this. I found a help topic that said to rename the file deletedold.dbx and it would restore but that didn't work either. Any help???

Answer:Need to recover deleted.dbx files

I understand what you are saying about finding the location of the deleted items.dbx file itself (within the system). Otherwise I'm struggling a bit to understand your question. Can you clarify what has happened and what you are trying to do please?Reading between the lines it appears that you might have deleted some emails from the Deleted Items box and are trying to recover them - is that right? If so, probably the best chance is to do System Restore to a date before that. There are free programs such as Recuva. If you can get the original old dbx file back (properly identified as such) you would then have to copy it on top of the one that now exists in the system, and the emails at that time would then be present in the OE Deleted Items box. When you rename the file deleted items.dbx Outlook Express will promptly create a new replacement file and therefore an empty Deleted Items box will appear in OE.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

hello
just for an example
if i just deleted a movie file , by shift+delete , can i recover him right away? i mean 2-3 seconds after
cause theoretically the space is still available and the DATA doesn't get erased unless it was rewritten onto by something else

thanks in advanced
p.s i didn't find another sub-forum more suitable than this so you think it doesn't belong here...

My non-technical brother bought an external hard drive then "synched" that drive to a folder on his internal hard drive that held (of course) all of the pictures of the kids. He claims he then deleted the folder from his internal hard drive and everything was gone from his external hard drive. Nothing in the recycle bin either.

I've never used an external hard drive, so I don't know if any of what he's saying even makes sense, but the bottom line is that he would like to get out of the doghouse and get the pictures back. Does anyone know if this is possible?

I've heard that no file is ever really erased from your hard drive its really just a matter of how much you want to pay to get it back.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi, this morning my silly cousin had deleted my photo files from the entire folder from my computer and my question is, is there a way to retrieve my photos back, or perhaps some sort of Recovering Deleted Programs that can do the job? please point me out of this misery. :dead: thankx in adv...

Answer:Recover deleted files?

Did he deleted them from Recycle Bin too? Because if not, you can found them there, just right-click on your file and then, restore.
Other solution I don't know, only if System Restore can do something, but I'm not sure.

I keep My Documents, My Videos etc. on a separate drive to OS (on E:\)

Today I noticed that My Documents folder was duplicated within the My pictures folder ... checked original still there - and then deleted what I thought was dup ... and both folder now gone.

I run RECUVA and saved all deleted files to separate HDD so they are at least safe.
Could not see option in RECUVA to actually recover a folder & its file structure.

However it would take long time to recreate structure & copy back.

I understand W7 has a feature in it to recover a deleted folder ... I looked at info and it seemed to say select folder and the right click ............. can't do that as folder no longer shows.

Is there a neat way to recover folder none of the files will have been overwritten.

Answer:recover Deleted folder

Do you have system restore enabled? If so you can mount the system restore point and browse it to copy your documents folder back to where it should be. You'll only lose any cahnges that were made to it since the last system restore point before the folder was deleted was created. Let us know as there are a couple of free softwares that can recover folders using this method.

I have a 60 gig Western Digital HDD that I thought was failing. It was partitioned into two drives E: for my OS (Win Xp Pro) and C: for storing a few odds and ends. I removed the drive and added it as a slave to the new server i just built. (wanted to work with Win 2000 Adv. Server so i built one) The server had a large enough drive that i could just move all my files and then dump the 60 gig. When i assigned a drive letter only the files from C: appeared.
They were useless so i deleted them. but i couldnt see E:
Heres the dumb part, I hit the "delete partition" and now the drive says "Unallocated" I NEED to get those files from the E: drive back. (my honeymoon, wedding, babtisms, party photos are on that drive, and im a dead man if i cant figure this out) I should know better i know..... Is there ANY way to recover a deleted partition or am i in the dog house permanently?
HELP!
thanks

I have a user that accidentally deleted a shared file from her local machine and she wants to recover it. The file is stored in a shared directory on a server 2003 machine. The file does not show up in her recycle bin (which I assumed it would). And I can't find a 'recycled' folder on the server or anything either. For good measure I ran a small recoveyr program on the server but didn't find it still. Any idea where it could have gone?

Also, in case anyone asks we do have a backup of it, but it won't do any good because it won't have any of the updated information she needs.

Answer:Recover deleted file

if you have the file shared out it should still be on the server. she could just go back to the server and copy the file over again. if its not on the server and she deleted the only other copy of the file, you might be SOL unless you want to take the time to bring the hard drive to a third party recovery place...
