I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am running Win 2K professional (SP1 and 2 installe) and IE 6. Recently I had to reinstall everything and since then my Windows Explorer left pane which lists the folders is empty.

If I click on the search icon, it shows the search windows. If I now click on the folders icon, it continues to show the search icon.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Whenever explorer opens, I can never find the folders I want easily. Therefore, I put them in the Favorites part of the navigation pane. However, still, when I open explorer, the left pane goes somewhere so low down that I can't even see my the favorites folder. Every single time I have to scroll all the way up to the top to find basic things like "Desktop." Is there ANY WAY to be able to always have the favorites bar showing on the left? To never have it disappear, no matter what folder in the tree Windows has opened? This was fine in XP. Its just AWFUL in windows 7. Takes time and is totally frustrating, and there seems to be no way to fix it as far as I have researched? Can anyone help me fix this?

On a side note, which is not nearly as important as my issue above, (because this one frustrated me to the point of no longer caring), is there any way to have the desktop fill up the space of a removed icon, but yet not reorganize the entire screen to where the last organization of your files is totally reorganized the next time you check? I want to be able to save things to the desktop and always have them come up AFTER everything else on the desktop. I want them to stay there, in that order when I shut down the computer, if I move something, I want all the files in front of that thing I moved to move back one space. What I do not want is "holes" in icon locations on my desktop, and I don't want the desktop to be reorganizing itself when I select automat... Read more

Answer:Explorer Left Pane -> Navigate to Favorites Automatically

Go to your navigation pane. Click on favorites. now right click on a blank space in the pane. Select "Expand to current folder".

Once the pane has expanded to favorites, right click again on an empty space in the pane and uncheck the box "Expand to Current Folder". Explorer should now automatically open at that location.

I click on the "+" beside the icon of a drive or folder near the bottom of the left pane of my Windows 7 Explorer. If the list of sub folders that opens is longer than the distance to the bottom of the pane, the lower icons become hidden. Those subfolders extend "below" the pane -- out of view. I want the contents of the pane to shift upward so that all the sub folders of interest are visible -- like on my XP computer and my win98 computer?

Is there a way that I can fix this?

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

Answer:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

Hi there.

Is there any way in the file explorer / windows explorer to show files / folders in Groups. I never realized how useful this is until I started using Dolphin more and more (even for Windows files - via network shares). Particularly good when you've got zillions of file / directories on modern large drives e.g 3 TB drives.

Enc screenshot of what I mean (Dolphin file manager in KDE - any Linux distro with KDE or Dolphin as file manager).

Hello form Macedonia, dear friends.
Could someone of you please help me?

I changed yesterday my router speedport which performed wireless connectivity problems, with a same one- and the problem is actually the same. For every 30 minutes I have limited access on my laptop, iPhone 4 and LG 5. If i restart the router it is OK for a while, and then again the same story. Someone told me to switch off wireless option on both phones, which made connectivity normal on my Samsung laptop.
I repeated, I changed two routers and the problem persists.
I will be highly appreciated if someone helps me to resolve this issue

If I expand a folder that's down towards the bottom and there's a lot of subfolders, then everything moves up to make room for the subfolder list. That's as it should be. But about the time I go to click on one of the subfolders, the whole list moves down again and you have to scroll back down to get where you want. After that, it stays put. It's an bug/annoyance that I hope someone gets fixed.
Just my 2 cents worth.

I think the OP is noticing the little quirk in Win 7 where Explore does not bring the left pane target folder (the one with focud) up to the to of the pane, throwing it instead to the bottom of the pane.

I just reformated my hard drive and reloaded XP Home. The problem I'm having, is that when I open Windows Explorer, (not Internet Explorer) the left pane (tree) does not cascade automatic to show all the folders. It just shows Documents, My Computer and the + sign beside each one to expand to the folders. It used to do this automatically in the past. I've tried all the view options on the tool bars, all property settings and nothing works. I'm running active desktop like I always do. Any ideas?

Thanks, Steve

Not sure if that's possible. Use the up or down button until you have highlighted the one you want. Then press Enter or Space to update the pane to the right. You use the left and right buttons to collapse/expand sub folders.

I find Space the best and fastest option since you use both hands. One to navigate and the other to refresh the right pane.

My problem is how the left window reacts when I select a folder.

If I have a long list of folders in the left window and I click on the small arrow to the left of a folder, it is supposed to show the list of sub-folders that are in the selected folder.

It does but here is my problem. Lets say the folder that I select is in the middle of the left window. When I click on the small arrow, Windows Explorer shifts the folder list down so that the selected folder is near the bottom of the window. Generally I can only see one of the sub-folders. And then I have to use the slider to move the selected folder up so I can see more than one sub-folder.

I wish it would leave the folder where it was and show as many sub-folders as possible underneath the selected folder. I hope this explanation makes sense.

Answer:The Navigation Pane on the left side of Windows Explorer

I tried it on my Computer and the on clicking the arrow it moves up as it should instead of going down. Please try out the following steps to correct the problem.

1. Restore the folder to default as follows and check if that helped:

a. Open windows explorer
b. Click on Organize
c. Select folder and search option from the list
d. Select General tab, and select “Restore Default”

2. Run an online scanner to check any malware or virus activity. The link that will help you to run a free scan on the computer is Windows Live OneCare

3. If the above steps do not help then run the SFC (System File Checker) scan on the computer to fix the system file errors on the computer. To run SFC scan, follow the steps below:

a. Click Start ,
b. Click All Programs ,
c. Click Accessories , right-click Command Prompt ,
d. And then click Run as administrator.
e. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow or Continue.
f. At the prompt, type sfc /scannow and hit enter. Once the scan is complete, restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Please tell if this was of any use.

During this learning process I somehow lost the Windows Explorer Default Pane to the Left of the window (it used to show System Tasks/Other Places/Details in separate panels).I can still get Search and Folders by pressing the buttons in the tool bar but when both are de-selected I only have a large window with no sign of the original panel. Please can someone tell me if it is possible to recover this information as I found it very helpful. If so can you also tell me how to do it in simple terms. Many thanks.

When Windows Explorer is open, if I right-click on anything in the left-pane, Explorer crashes and re-starts.

I've googled, and tried using NirSoft's ShellFix, disabled the most common issues googling resulted in:
#1 Remove Nvidia context-menu and for desktop right-click.
#2 Remove Spybot Search & Destroy context-menu.
#3 Remove Nvidia "nvshext.dll" (not found after using ShellFix)

None of these resulted in a fix at all. I've tried booting in safe mode, the same problem exists. I can right-click on file and folders in the right pane of Explorer, but right-clicking in the left pane, whether folder or drive. Explorer still crashes.

I found a Microsoft page regarding a similar issue, and to be on the safe side, I tried that. Still doing the same thing.

This is really driving me crazy, since I use portable backup drives to re-install my games onto the system but it's pretty hard to drag and drop when you can't have a second Explorer pane open.

Anyone have any ideas?

This one is getting really annoying. I have noticed that sometimes when using Windows Explorer, if I rename a folder, the right hand pane shows the correct (new) folder name, but the left hand pane still displays the old folder name.

As a matter of fact, even if I right click on the folder name on the left hand pane, and choose "Rename", and then rename it there, when I hit Enter to save the name change, the folder name on the left (that was just highlighted and changed) will revert back to the original name....but the name in the right hand pane will show the change.

For some reason, it just doesn't seem to want to update the view in the left hand pane. And then, to top it off, after some undetermined amount of time, the left hand pane will "refresh" to show the new folder name, but it will STILL show the old folder in the list as well. If I right-click the parent folder and choose "Open in New Window", the view is correct, but the original window still shows the old folder names.

This may only happen after my Explorer windows (I usually have 4 or 5 up) have been open for a long time, as I tried to reproduce with new windows and the behavior is normal (left hand pane updates view immediately).

I've reported it already, but just curious if anyone else has experienced this odd behavior.

Answer:Windows Explorer left-pane not showing changes to folder names

Hi CorrsFan

I think this is just a part of it being a Beta still. I have tried to delete the HomeGroup section, and while it goes for awhile as soon as it refreshes it's back. Just like some sections of the Registry is locked out and some permissions can't be changed, these things will all be sorted out by RC1. Renaming any system item is locked down in the registry and Left (Navigation) Pane items seem to be a part of this lockout.

Make sure to send MS Feedback on this so they know what works and doesn't.

Dear All:

I have been experiencing an annoying issue in Windows (Windows Ultimate 64 bits, Home premium 64 bits and Windows 8 Pro 64 bits) min

After working well for a few minutes, the windows explorer freezes upon launch, only displaying the "favorites", "libraries" and "homegroup" icons in the left pane. The elements in the mentioned icons cannot be accessed and sometimes they have a magnifying glass on them and the icons on the desktop are blank.

Also, Control Panel windows is often empty after this error takes place.

This issue often, but not necessarily, comes about when i try to check the properties of a file, with windows explorer freezing immediately.

I have reinstalled Windows 7 twice to no avail.

Anyone has ideas on how to fix this? It's rendering my two laptops unusable.
Highly appreciate any useful advice.

Thank you,

Windows 7 has apparently lost the ability to rename a folder in Explorer's left-hand (Navigation) pane by left-clicking a highlighted folder a 2nd time.

I know I can use F2 or right-click< Rename, or even rename in the right-hand pane, but I'm so used to doing it it the left-hand pane that I keep forgetting and trying to do it.

So is this intentional or is it a bug? I'd like to know so I can report/request it for a future SR. Although I have a feeling it's supposed to be this way and I'm wasting my time. Still.... it's always worth a try.

mac

Answer:Rename folders in left pane - feature or bug?

Mac,

I think it's intentional. You can see the full options if you right-click on any folder at the left pane of Windows Explorer, so i think it's not bug.

Microsoft is not careless on that case.

Thank's.

I know that the solution to this was in a recent edition of PC Advisor, but after applying it I tore the page out, gave it away and now it's gone!On my desktop I have a shortcut to a folder on my network. When I double-click on the shortcut I would like the folder to open in windows explorer, but with the folders pane already pre-selected on the left, rather than having to select it from the button at the top of the window. Can anyone remember how to do this, or can some kind soul look it up from the recent PC Advisor in which the solution appeared? Many thanks,Stuart Reid

Answer:Explorer windows to open showing folders pane

I don't know if it is the same with a network shortcut, but with Windows Explorer itself, this is achieved by adding /e to the shortcut path to give:%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /eIt then opens with "C" drive expanded in the left pane, instead of the blue "System Tasks".

Hi. My problem is slightly different but along the same lines? When I open Explorer, Favorites is displayed at the top of the left column, as desired. However, not all of the folders I have designated for Favoriates is displayed in the left column. When I left click on the word "Favorites," then in the right column the entire list of Favorites folders does display. (Meaning: there's a list of nine folders on the right side, but back in the left column under Favorites only seven are displayed.)

I've tried all of the solutions described above and none fixes this problem. If I try to drag a folder from Right to Left, two things happen: (A) A copy of that folder is created on the right side (so I'll see the original and a version with "(2)" after the name; and (B) on the left side, one of the folders that used to be in Favorites no longer displays.

I don't know why a copy is made on the Right, but the action on the Left leads me to believe that somehow the left column Favorites is set to display no more than seven (7) items, but I can't find where to change that setting.

ANy ideas out there?

Answer:Favorites in left pane does not display all Favorite folders

Hello Kell, and welcome to Seven Forums.

As a test, open your C:\Users\(user-name)\Links folder, and see what you have for shortcuts there. If they are all there, then cut and paste them to your desktop to empty the folder, then copy them back to see if they appear in the navigation pane under Favorites afterwards.

If that doesn't help, then try the tutorial below along with the yellow TIP box if needed.

I can get Windows Explorer to open to a specific folder in the Right Pane, but it only shows the "Computer" or "C:" level in the Left pane. I have tried pinning the folder to "Start", and have also tried various switches (n, e, select) as the target in Explorer.

Attached is an example where a shortcut in Start opens TechInfo in the right panel, but not the left.

Is there any way to open the folder in the left pane also? It's a minor issue, but a pain!

TIA.

Yes this has been answered before (in 2001, I think) but the solution as provided via Rollin' Rog:

failed to work. Maybe because IE is version 6?

The symptoms are the same - blank, b'ground-coloured left pane. The above was entered (I also tried 'shdocvw.dll' but no dice.

Any further possible solutions, please?

Hi everyone:

How can I open explorer to a particular left pane file? I want to open to: Libraries, Documents, My documents (with the files showing underneath my doucments). I have been able to open to: user, my documents, but I would rather open to the libraries file structure - it looks cleaner.

Thanks, in advance.

I had a look at your problem just after you posted eary this morning. Was not sure that i understood what is going on.Thought you had got your Windows Explorer.exe confused with internet explorer.exe.I also considered you had poss a bad update of IE5 as it appears to only have one choice in the add/remove programs for it.Considered at some stage you may have had a virus, but you don't mention anything about a virus scan or any error messages.I would suggest that your problem is wide spread through-out your pc and i think you have issues with your registry and corrupt files within the windows installation."I could also be very wrong" You could go for a quick re-install of windows 98 over itself and see if that cures the problem. It may give you a chance to keep all software programs that are installed and running properly,if that be the case.If it was me, i would not hesitate to reformat and do a repeat clean install of windows.Unless someone can come up with a better idea.

Hi Guys!
Sorry if this was posted already, really busy!

Well this is my problem...i have a couple of pcs with windows xp, and i want to disable the windows explorer view, like explore all users by right clicking on the start menu orb. Or simply as when opening the file explorer, never having the left pane with the file list tree, so that no program can activate this view...

I have older people working in this company and sometimes they just dont let go of the left click on the mouse, making them moving files they are not supposed to.

We use a access database that views its contents (like docs, pics, gifs) always with this left pane with tree listing of all the folders...

I would be gratefull for this solution...

This is something that's been bothering me since I upgraded this Dell XPS8700 to windows 10 some two weeks or more ago.

The left pane in File Explorer seems to duplicate my drive letters and info other than what's under the entry "This PC".

If I look down the list, starting just below the Libraries folder, the drive letters are repeated but not all of them.

Like I have under This PC : C: , DVDRW D:, E:, F: , a card reader, H,L,K, external drives L:, another card reader letter M:, a second external drive N:, followed by some NAS folders I have mapped, V, W, X. and Y.

Down past the Libraries folder are again: H, L, N, M, K, and I, then Network etc, Homegroup etc.

Hard to describe, I could do a screen shot and post it if that would help see it.

How and why are all these drive letters getting into this tree twice? Anyone?

TIA - Gene

Answer:Explorer not showing me the left hand tree pane

If you are running XP there should be a button labelled "Folders" to the right of the "Search" button at the top of the window (when "viewed as a web page") Click this and the panel should appear with the folders in it.

Hi all,
This might be a really dumb question, but in Windows 7 (Home Premium, no 3rd-party modifications), is there an easy way to get the tree pane on the left of an Explorer window to update to the current folder location?

For instance, if I navigate through folders using the folder icons on the right and the address bar at the top, the tree pane on the left still only shows the roots of each of the system's drives. How can I get the tree pane to expand to show my current location, without having to drill down through the tree manually, one level at a time?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Getting tree pane in Explorer to update automatically?

it's quite simple, fortunately.

hit the 'Alt' button in windows explorer, this will make a menu bar appear - then press tools >> folder options

now tick the bottom box

In Windows Seven if I right click in Explorer left pane Favorites I can then press 'e' to open that folder in a new window. In Vista, I have to press 'o'. Being right handed and wanting to use the mouse, now I have to reach across with my left hand to press the 'o' key.

Is there no way to change the underline/shortcut/accelerator whatever they call it key in the context menu? I see no way to do it. I look in the Registry and I don't see any "&" in front of any of the letters. But the short cut letter is there just the same. There must be a way to change it.

All I've been able to find is turn the display of underline on and off. No info how to change the letter itself.

Please help!

Answer:Change underline key for Explorer Left Pane context menu?

Just left-click "Open in new window" from the right-click menu. No need to use the keyboard at all for that. Using the mouse buttons is quicker anyway (at least it should be if you already have the mouse under your hand).

This issue has been buggin' me and I can't get an answer for it. It seems that there are two people in our office that do not get folders listed on the left side of the window of their explorer. If you double click on My Computer you only get drives on one list. To view the folder arrangement, you must press the folders button above or go to View > Explorer bar > and select Folders. Once you close it out and re-open, it is gone again. It doesn't matter if you set it up to view and then select Like current folder under the Folder options. I've tried finding and answer at Microsoft with little success. Can you help. I have Windows 2000.

Thanks,

I know this is probably a very simple fix but I can't seem to remember it. When I open windows explorer (xp home) to view files and folders it is not showing me all of them. For example, under c:\documents and settings it does not show "local settings\..." and all the subfolders. And, when I installed Office it created an install cache folder but it doesn't show that either. How do I turn it on to show all? There is no prompt to "show hidden files". its probably something real simple that I am overlooking.

Answer:Windows Explorer Doesn't Show All Folders

I think what you are looking for is Tools (on the top menu)/Folder Options/View.
Scroll down and tick "show hidden files and folders. You can also "untick" Hide extensions..etc and Hide protected operating..etc BUT use with caution. These files are hidden for a purpose and should not be messed around with too much.

Hi, Usually repairing Internet Explorer fixes this issue.

Read the following, all the way down to the bottom!

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=194177

If you have XP, there is another method: Since XP comes with IE 6, the entry for IE does not show in Add/Remove Programs, and you cannot run the repair utility from there...so> try this:

Read about it first!http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_ie6.htm

Start button>Run

Type in the run line this:[cmd] and hit Enter key once.

Type this next to the cursor in the black box:

sfc /scannow (one space after the c) and hit Enter key once again.

Let the System File Checker run, it will take awhile, then it will NOT give any messages...either it works, or it doesnt.

For other than XP, win2000, etc:

The IE Repair utility is available if you have upgraded Internet Explorer from the original installed version> take a look in Add/Remove Programs, and if you see this:

Microsoft Internet Explorer (someversion) and Internet Tools, just hit Add/Remove> we arent uninstalling anything, you will see 3 options then> hit "Repair this version of IE" and let the utility run to completion. You will see a message that tells you either it fixed something, or that you need to reinstall IE.

There are certain steps to reinstalling depending on what your version of Windows is> and if you have XP with SP2 or not.

Let us know what happens.

Whenever I open file explorer, I have to wade through a massive, massive list of speakers, keyboards, email servers, printers, and all other things that I only ever use on my desktop. So when I plug a flash drive into my laptop, it takes me 1 or 2 minutes to find the stupid thing. When I try to organize the "This PC" pane, it reloads the network drives and resets everything on reboot.

How make I the network things go away permanently? I can find no setting.

Hi there

Recently I've been experiencing a weird problem with Windows 10. Right clicking any folders on the pane on the left - the one with folders, libraries etc. causes explorer to freeze and then crash.

I can right click on files and folders in the main explorer window. This problem only occurs when I try to right click on something in the navigation pane.

What could cause this?

Exactly what my title says...

I was testing my FTP from another computer, I would enter the usernames and passwords to login and see my folders there. Here's the following folders I have:

Public (default login) - Username: None - Password: None.
Private - Username: Private - Password: ********.
Upload - Username: UPload - Password: ********.

Note: Obviously you're not going to see my password.

But as I right-click and 'login as...' (in IE) and put in the Username and Password, the problem occured. I can't see the Private OR Upload folders. Why? I checked the logs on the other computer (FTP server) and it says I have successfully logged on with the correct Username and Password. Yet I can't see the folders. Any clue or whatnot?

Note: Before you even think of asking, the answer is YES. I have the proper folders in my FTP link. It does work.

When I open an instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane show little or nothing (no drives, folders, etc.). Also the preview pane does not show a preview for any selected files (See Capture1.JPG).
If I open a second (or higher) instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane functions properly (the preview still does not show) (See Capture2.JPG).
I have previews set to show (See Capture3.JPG).
Also occasionally, the file icons will be blank instead of showing the file type specific icon. When this happens, the address bar also seems to take a long time to load. The load bar will stop before reaching the end and won't finish (See Capture4.JPG).

Does anyone know what is going on or how to fix this?

FYI I am running 64 bit Windows 7 Pro.

Try Explorer++ and see if you get the same problem.

Need to enable "Folders" view.
If it works then you can rule out problems with system files and it's probably a buggy shell extension.

Win 7 Pro 64-bit. On reboot, I want Task Manager to start automatically, as early as possible, ideally in the Processes tab, showing processes from all users, and sorted by CPU usage (with max CPU usage on top).

If that's too specific, then I just want Task Manager to start automatically on reboot, as early as possible, regardless of its focus.

How can I do this?

If it's helpful, I have autoruns, but I've never used it to make a new startup program.

Example I am looking at a full window of folders with five coloumns of folders. If I double click on a folder in any coloumn except the far left coloumn, all of the coloumns move to the left by one coloumn space. Reseting file and view settings does not
fix the problem. I have seen this on Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Enterprise. It does not matter if it is on a domain or not or if a group policy is setting the home page.
This means I have to click twice as many times to open a folder in list view and that is the view I really want to use. Clicking twice as many times is also not good for carpel tunnel. This happens on my home and work computers and I have seen it on other
Windows 7 computers. Neither does the reg hack for MIUs or something similiar to that.

Answer:Windows 7 Explorer in list view moves coloumns of folders to left when you double click folder to open it

Hi,

That’s a by design feature, but you can apply view settings to all folders of the same type. Here are
the detailed steps:

1. Open a folder and make changes as you like.
2. Press Alt to display the menu bar. Click Tools -> Folder options.
3. Click View tab.
4. Press the "Apply to folders" button.
5. Click Apply and click OK.

Note: The "Apply to folders" settings apply the current view setting to all folders that are optimized for the
same content as the folder you have open. This setting will not apply to the folders which is not the same type.

Hope that helps.

I think that is how Vista works. There is a mention of this limitation when i came across a free software called USB Disk Ejector, that overcomes this limitation by closing the explorer in vista before ejecting the portable disk. You may try that and see if it helps.

Win 7 was easy to make all your folders show details view and not what windows thought you should view it as.

I can't find a way to do that in Win 8. I have googled it many times and all attempts have failed. I have changed several folders to details view only to have them revert back to what windows wants me to view them as.

I would like to do this for all my folders and libraries, which I understand may not work for libraries.

Can someone please help me. Is there a registry setting I can set to force all views to be detail view?

Answer:Folder View want to make it all folders show details

It's pretty much the same as Win 7, but to get to is is a little different, first open My Computer and Open the C drive and choose Detail View, then hit Options:

Then hit "Change Folder Options" and it is the same, choose "Apply to All folders"

I added my user folder as a toolbar to the taskbar for quick access to its subfolders and files. I had set some of rarely-used system folders in my user folder (such as "Desktop," "Searches" etc.) as hidden, and selected "Do not show hidden folders, etc." in Folder Options. These hidden folders are not shown in Windows explorer's window, but they show up on the taskbar's toolbar. Is there a way to keep them hidden on the taskbar as well?

Answer:How to make hidden folders not show up on the taskbar's toolbar

Hi Notetaker

My name is Mohammed from DELL social media and community.

In response to your query, we would like to know If you are using windows 7, if you are then you just have to do right-click on the task bar and unpin the folders which you want to from the taskbar. Let us know if this helps or you need more assistance.

Thanks

Somehow the left pane with the list of email file folders got moved to the bottom of the page. So the right pane containing the messages is a full screen left to right, and the file folders are way at the bottom only showing the first two folders and then having the scroll bar off to the right.
How do you get the left folder pane back into position with the right message pane next to it.
Once again, the messages pane are on top of the folder pane.
How can I move the folders back where they belong.
Thank you, Dynalady

Hi,
is this possible?
I currently have things like Favourites, Libraries, and Homegroup (all of which I don't care for). Not sure what that folder pane is actually called, so not sure what to search for.
I just want an expanded folder tree of My Computer.

Any suggestions?
thanks

[edit:
Favorites - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane for Favourites apparently. still not sure about libraries or homegroup]
[another edit:
Libraries Folder - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane
for Libraries
ok, at least it's searchable now that I know it's called navigation pane]

Answer:Change/remove entries in "Folder view" pane (left side of Explorer)

I'm not sure why one would do this. Right click on what ever you don't want and select delete. Be very sure you want to do this. Those things do no harm being there.

Greetings,

Before our hypervisor kicked the bucket taking down the file server VM with it, this is the way it worked:

User would go to G:\ drive (network drive map to shared folder on file server VM).
Inside this drive was a handful of folders, each titled after the name of an overseas division.
Each folder had NTFS permissions "Domain Admins" (Full Control) and "<name of overseas divison>" (Full Control). If the user did not have membership to all overseas divison groups, only the ones the user had access to would show up in the list of folders the user could open. This was nice and awesome because then the user would only see what they have access to.

Now the only permissions that changed after we finally got our file server back on the ground was the root folder NTFS & Shared permissions (a couple other things as well, but let's start from the root/simplest level).

If I recall correctly, Shared permissions had Domain Admins with Full Control, and either Authenticated Users or Domain Users with either Full Control or just Change+Read. The NTFS permissions had Domain Admins with Full Control, and either Authenticated Users or Domain Users with some read-only ability (I do not remember which checkboxes were checkmarked for the Permission Entry window, but nothing like being able to create/write/change/take ownership was checkmarked for sure).

I should have documented this and I was going to do it but I was too late and should have done ... Read more

Answer:How to make folders user doesn't have access to not show up in folder listing?

To hide it from view, under share properties put a $ at the end of the share. For instance, the share path i put is \\servername\DivisionA$\

That will hide it from anyone, they would have to know to put the $ at the end of the share.

If you don't want them seeing eachothers department, you will need to map their drive to the department rather then just the the "shared" folder at the top.

Hello CosmicPoptart,

You could use the tutorial below to hide these folders for them not show their anymore. However, this will hide these folders everywhere, and not just here.

File and Folder - Hide or Unhide

In Windows 7, it will go into this state where it won't update folders automatically, and I have to hit F5, as well, if I go for example, New->Text Document - it will hang the desktop and take like 3-4 minutes before coming back and showing the file.It is like something is preventing or slowing down the refresh of windows explorer. It happens about once a day, sometimes I reboot to see if I can get it to go away.

Answer:Windows Explorer Does Not Refresh Automatically (Needs F5) AND Takes A Long Long Time To Make New File

I've narrowed down more the possible causes of the issue: If You disable the Client for Microsoft Networks in properties of Local Area Connection - the issue disappear (maybe only in my case).

In Windows 2000, in the File Explorer, I can go View->Explorer Bar->Folders and the left side of the screen shows folders whilst the right side of the screen shows what's in those folders.I can also go Tools->Folder Options->View->Like Current Folder. This should record my preference to show the folders on the left always, whenever I open File Explorer.Problem:- that doesn't happen. If I open "My Documents" it uses the default view. Likewise if I set up a shortcut to a folder, it uses the default view. Can I change something in the registry so that the default view always has the folders on the left? Please help.

Answer:File Explorer, how do I get folders always on left and files on right?

I'm using XP so this might be different.  That particular option cannot be remembered by the OS from what I can tell. I just tried it here on XP and it didn't remember that for me.

A few days ago i noticed some folders showing up in the "Open Map"-dialogue of the Warcraft 3 World Editor but not in Windows Explorer. Searching with cmd and the "dir" command didn't show these folders either.

"C:\Program Files (x86)" in Windows Explorer:
"C:\Program Files (x86)" in Warcraft 3 World Editor (Open Map):
All of them appear with a lock-symbol in their icon and all of them don't grant permission to normal users. When i try to change permissions or the owner (via the "Open Map"-dialogue), i get the following error message:
"Unable to change the owner of [Foldername].
The System cannot find the File specified."

Most of the folders were created during the installation of software wich i have uninstalled up to now.
Another example is the "Download" folder of Warcraft 3 itself. Not showing up in the explorer, but perfectly visible (and usable) in Warcraft 3 and the Editor.

Is there any option to make those folders visible in the Explorer?
"Show hidden files, folders and drives" didn't help.

Answer:Some Folders don't show up in the Explorer

What about Hide protected operating system files [Recommended]?
