Having several different problems with Windows & computer; possible common origin.

Question: Having several different problems with Windows & computer; possible common origin.

Monday night after returning from work, several problems cropped up on my computer all at the same time after I restarted it. My computer had been running somewhat slow before then, but virus scans didn't detect anything wrong. Here are the problems that I've been having since I restarted my comp:
The first thing I noticed was that my monitor's resolution changed from its standard 1024x768 to 800x600, which made everything appear big and wouldn't fit my wallpaper properly. Also, all my icons were reset to their default positions. I managed to fix these problems and my screen resolution and icon arrangement has stayed normal since, even after resetting my computer during my attempts to fix it.
My computer has been running very slowly, far more so than before Monday night. It seems like it takes five times as long to load anything (programs, web pages, etc.). It also takes far more time than normal to restart my computer (it even failed to reboot once, and I was forced to unplug and replug my computer to get it to start up).
Whenever I scroll down the page in any window (in IE, Word, Frontpage, or any other program, it does so slowly and there's this weird "ripple" or "wave" effect to the scrolling motion. It does this whether I use a window's scroll bar or my mouse's scroll wheel. Also, a similar problem happens whenever I drag a window across the screen.
Real Player has been playing video files slowly, and the picture was all pixelated. (This was the first program I used after restarting my computer.)
Whenever I tried to fix the previous two problems, I started by consulting Window's Help & Support as well as several websites. The most common solution given (including by WH&S) was to uninstall my video controller/driver (via Device Manager) and then reinstall it (via Hardware Wizard). My video controller is the Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV graphics controller/Intel Extreme Graphics driver, which came as my computer's preinstalled graphics hardware.

Whenever I try to reinstall it, Hardware Wizard said the following:
Cannot Install this Hardware

There was a problem installing this hardware:
IntelŪ 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV graphics controller

An error occurred during the installation of the device

The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.Click to expand...

The Device Manager now just says "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)" under "Display adapters" where it used to have the Intel video controller. The Properties of the video controller says the following under the General tab:
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.Click to expand...

Of course, I tried reinstalling the driver, but Hardware Wizard keeps saying the same thing as above, and the video controller's properties keep saying the same thing after each attempt to reinstall.

Each of these problems happened simultaneously, so I'm assuming they have a common origin. I ran another virus scan after the problems started Monday night, but again, no problems were detected. I'm guessing it's a hardware problem. I don't really know much about computers, and using all the advice of all the help, support, and troubleshooting guides I've seen has been unable to resolve the problem. If someone here can help me out, I would be truly appreciative.

Thanks ahead of time. Later.

Preferred Solution: Having several different problems with Windows & computer; possible common origin.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This white box showed up today, about 3 inches by 4 inches, bottom right corner of my desktop, covering some of my icons.  Nothing to click on or do anything with. Ran CCleaner, AVG, Glary, and Malwarebytes.  The box still appears after a restart and using the computer for a bit.  Any ideas greatly appreciated,  Thanks, Ed

Answer:White box appeared on desktop "fix common computer problems"

Have you looked at your Control Panel -> Programs & Features to see if anything new has been added, that you didn't add? If there's nothing obvious I'd drop down to the Am I Infected forum and let one of the experts walk you through getting things cleaned up. I don't recommend any more do-it-yourself attempts. They could make things worse.

Hi, can someone please help as EA aren't helping me!

Origin was working fine until yesterday. Then it came up with this error code:

The procedure entry point _except1 could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\Program\Origin\Origin.exe.

So I uninstalled Origin, several times and followed EVERYTHING they told me to do, manual uninstall, do it with no anti virus etc. I even tried to download from a third party website, which did progress more in the installation but still failed with even more error messages!

I have had Microsoft access my computer and they have also tried everything and have confirmed that nothing at all is wrong with my laptop (which is what EA was trying to say).

Its really frustrating now and I hope someone can help please!

I have a Toshiba laptop and I am running windows 10.

It was compatible with windows 10 as it was working for a week or so. It did keep crashing but I changed screen resolution and was fine.

I will appreciate any help, Thanks!

Fix the Most Common Windows 7 Upgrade Problems

By Robert Strohmeyer, PC World

Experienced PC users know that not every operating-system upgrade goes smoothly--but that bit of understanding does little to offset the annoyance we feel when we're faced with seemingly unresolvable installation problems. Windows 7 has presented some users with a few serious upgrade bugs of its own. Don't worry: We'll explain how to exterminate them.

Before beginning your Windows 7 upgrade, attach your PC directly to your router via a wired ethernet connection. This will ensure that Windows 7 has a chance to download the latest installation updates directly from Microsoft at the outset of the upgrade process. By the time you read this article, it's possible that Microsoft will have created a fix for some of the following upgrade bugs, so your first step in any upgrade scenario should be to make sure that you have a wired Internet hookup to your PC from the start.

More of this seen at: Fix the Most Common Windows 7 Upgrade Problems - PC World Business Center

This one covers the following problems.

Installation Hangs at 62 Percent
Endless Reboots
Bad Product Key

Answer:Fix the Most Common Windows 7 Upgrade Problems

A month later and PCWorld rides to the rescue with the "fix" for Upgrade key being refused on new or formatted drive: install XP or Vista first!

They need to spend more time here in the trenches.

1.) I want to run my remote, hotkey utility and so one on my Toshiba Satellite x200-22v. But... I can't find any Common Modules for 64bit version (even vista), I've installed the Hotkey Utility for XP on this Seven and it don't runs because of lack of EBlib.dll (which I can't found at Google to download).

2.) My HDMI stopped working - I was viewing movie from HD DVD disc and the TV appears black, graphics turns back to Laptop's screen and it can't find TV anymore - this one and others too. HDMI cable and input at TV works (connected PS3 to try). What could happen? HDMI broken at laptop?

Answer:Common Modules on Windows 7 x64 and HDMI problems

Common modules as separately tool exist for WXP only and you cannot use it for Win7. For Win7 you must use Value Added package.
Most important part of this package is ?Toshiba Components Common Driver?. It is something like common modules for WXP.

It is not easy to get proper answer. Just restart your notebook and test it again. if the problem persists try to test it on some other TV to see what will happen.
Post results and let?s see what can be next step to fix this.

Wanted to point out this post from Mauro earlier today... for anyone out there having trouble with the Creators Update!!
Hope it helps... and for anyone having troubles, what issues are you having??

Answer:Windows 10 Creators Update Common Problems and Fixes

Updated fine on both my desktop PC and tablet (Dell Venue 8 Pro) using the Update Assistant, but I don't have the option to turn on Cortana's 'Pick up where you left off'. Whereas my laptop (Dell Latitude D630) that had updated previously through the Insider Program, but now opted out so it doesn't move on to Redstone 3 Insider, DOES have the option. Obviously useless since my other PCs do not have the option.
Is the feature still in beta and just left over on the laptop after exiting Insider? I thought it was suppose to be released with the Creators Update.
Edit: Feedback Hub has a feedback about it being restricted to EN-US builds. Mine should be a US build but with Region set to Canada. Double checked all all devices are set to Canada including the laptop that still has the feature, grandfathered in perhaps?
Edit 2: My 950 XL does not have the option either, was the feature available on W10M?

I have been having problems trying to get my sound to run through the speakers in my laptop (HP Palilion dv6) instead of my headset. It started with the last service pack (Windows Vista Service Pack 2 KB948465) update and every time I try to change it from my headset to my speakers I get 'Windows common shell Dll is not responding'. I have checked for updates on the device driver, uninstalled it so it had to re-intall itself, run a registry repair program (Error Fix) and even tried going back to a restore point before the pack, then uninstalled and reinstalled the service pack. Nothing worked.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated as having all my sound competing against Ventrillo is really starting to get to me.

yesterday i began using google only to notice that when i clicked on any link, it went to a random redirected link where they would be selling something etc.

with that i went to avg and tried to update to test for viruses and the connection to updates was completely unavailable, i uninstalled avg and installed bitdefender for the same outcome.

today to address the problem i went on a forum much like this one and it tod me to use malwarebytes anti-malware, i did this and whatever i have also refused to allow me to even open this.

i then changed the names of all the .exe files in the program folder and was able to open and run the programs, i removed the threats as the forum advised me to do and now when i restart my desktop i am getting recurring svchost.exe application errors.

I attemtped a system restore but it appears to have gotten their to as it assures me that i need to restart my computer which inevitably leads me back to the same error message.

if anyone could talk me through the repair of my pc in terms that i am an outside chance of understanding that would be absolutely brilliant.

forgive my naivety in advance as i may struggle.

My friend and I were having a discussion where most viruses come from. He for some reason believe that 80% of computer viruses are perpetrated by AntiVirus and computer companies to fuel their next product, whereas I believe it's sad lifeless basement hermits with nothing better to do? Does anyone know where most computer viruses come from... I've searched on the internet but it onl;y gives vague answers...

Answer:What is the origin of computer viruses?

Hello bud,
REAL Computer viruses are designed by crafty and extrememly smart people. They are released to gather information on other users and to sometimes steal credit card info/ personal i dentities. I don't understand why people do it. But they do, and we have to protect ourselvres in turn.

Hope this helps,

I have a co-worker with a virus on her computer. The following viruses have been detected on Norton Anti-Virus Corporate. The files show up on the scan and are unable to be cleaned. We have deleted the files and they have not come back, but the computer is still acting up. In Microsoft Outlook 2000 the program will open and the users signature will be missing. The user can add a new signature and everything works. When the user restarts the computer, the new signature is gone and the old signature has been returned. The saved favorites also disappear from Outlook and when the computer is restarted they return. In Internet Explorer 8 the user is unable to log into any web based applications. The program will give the log in screen, stop working, and shut down offering a error message. Hi all.
So here is a interesting problem that gets my head spinning. Connection established trough Checkpoint VPN towards our domain.
IP address and DNS with Gateway provided. Through CMD you can ping with reply to your server using the common network name, (server1T). You can RTSC to your server using the common name. But once you open windows file explorer and go "\\common server
name"(\\server1T), you get your destination unreachable. Then you use the FQDN (\\, it works fine.
What has been done:
Checked All SLL, Radius, DNS config and replications, DHCP scopes, LDAP, WPAD, IPCONFIG, and Policy settings. No changes was made. The problem only started about 4 weeks ago, and its random.
Any one perhaps with an idea or who shares my problem.
Kind regards

A quarter century ago, Windows wasn't everywhere. In fact, some were doubtful it would ever ship at all.

At that point Windows was no longer considered the company?s star project, as it had become a bit of an embarrassment. Even internally there were doubts among some in the company that Windows would ever ship. Also, because Ballmer had already burned though four product managers to try to get there?people who now had been either reassigned or were no longer at Microsoft?the product was developing a reputation for career death.

My NE 522 came with Windows 8 64-bit but when I was informed that I could upgrade to Windows 10 for free I jumped on it. I remember having to stair-step to 8.1 then 10 during installation. Everything seemed to be fine for a few months then the BSOD. I managed to get it going again for a short time and now the Laptop is not operational. At startup I get the Gateway logo then a blue screen saying "Default boot device missing..." I get past this using the "recovery" stick I made just after purchase but I get "Choose keyboard layout" then "Troubleshoot or Turn off" as options. I have used the Troubleshoot Path to get to the command prompt. I also can get through POST and access the InsydeH20 startup utility (BIOS) which I use to unfreeze the HDD password (not sure why it keep freezing). Refresh, Reset, Restore and Automatic Repair all fail. From command prompt I access x:\Program Files <x86>> desktop.ini and see one HDD (Boot) with 27.6 MB free of 30.0 MB. I also see the Removable Storage devices.

The top of the command window says "Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.9200]" Does this mean Windows is installed?
If I have lost the OS how should I attempt to re-install, Win8 then upgrade or straight to Win10?

Answer:OS origin for Laptop or Windows 10

AFRet96 said:

If I have lost the OS how should I attempt to re-install, Win8 then upgrade or straight to Win10?

No need for Win8, you can go straight to a clean install of Windows 10. Your successful upgrade from 8 to 10 has recorded a Digital Licence tied to your PC's hardware on Microsoft's activation servers. Do a clean install of 10 (making sure you install the same version as you had before, Home or Pro) and when it asks for a key skip this with the 'I don't have one' or 'register later' option. Once installed your Digital Licence will automatically activate the new install.

I have a HP Pavillion dv7 Notebook Pc. I was wondering if there were any problems that anyone else had involving the built-in webcam not functioning. it happened a few months in. at first it would just take forever to load up then eventually it stopped all together. I tried uninstalling the software and reinstalling it with no success. when I go to device manager it says the universal usb hub isn't functioning or something like that.

Answer:Common problems with my pc

I think there is problem with your webcam only. If your laptop is under warranty period then call the customer service provider and get your laptop checked. Or one possibility may be that you have installed O.S on your own and some error occurred. In that case you can re-install your O.S.

Answer:windows live vs steam vs Origin ?

Doesn't windows live work with steam games? I got the steam version of GTA 4 and it would sign me into windows live so I could see when my XBox friends were online. (Bonus XBox points for playing on PC. )

Never really used it much so can't say for quality, but I imagine Win Live would be for the XBoxers to stay in touch.

On my older machine, which keeps chugging along with Vista....
About every 30 to 40 minutes, it gives a "hiccup" and a message appears saying: "Application Host Service has stopped working." At the same time the icon for Panda Protection, my AV, briefly shows a red X which goes out after about 5-7 seconds. I press "Close" and thing's proceed normally until the next occurrance....these periodic interruptions can go on all day.
On the other computer, which runs Windows 7, I always have to manually start the Windows Firewall and Windows Defender, and Defender seems quite reluctant to do so at times.  Once on, they stay on. I vaguely remember this began when I started to use Panda as my AV.
Haven't received any Windows Updates on the older computer since a year ago last August, and don't think it is even active, although I still scan with it. Needless to say I don't use it for any browsing where security is a must, but scans with my other security programs including MBAB and Hitman Pro show I haven't picked up any malware on it. And Panda never finds anything either.
Just wondered if Panda might be causing these glitches. Am leery of using Avasta on this computer which has running for about eight years now, or it it will even run on it. Any thoughts, as always, appreciated giving an idea what I should try next. .

IMO, it's devices with drivers that pose the most problem on Vista, especially if changes and updates to those drivers occur by the company.

DVD is short for Digital versatile disk and was initially intended to substitute for VHS tapes, since it is inconvenient to carry it about people. And it quickly came up as portable data storage device just as expected. As DVD is more and more popular, DVD ripper extends its market and plays more and more important role in our daily life.So below are some common problems about a DVD Ripper and how to solve the problems in an appropriate way. I thought it might be an idea to have a thread with links to solutions/guides to common issues, because as we all know, encourage as we may, there'll always be those who won't search because they either don't want to, or don't have time. Apart from which, if it's a common problem, it makes for easy access to a solution.

Answer:Common Sims 2 Problems

FAQ (continued):
Q. When I try installing the new Sims 2 I am told that I need to insert a disk in the drive even though the disc is already in the drive. What's wrong?
A. This has been a common problem. Nine times out of Ten, the cd is faulty, usually because of the protection on the CD. Try exchanging the game for another one. Sometimes you just have to restart the computer with the disc in the drive, then try to install. If that does not work, ensure you are using "Disc 1" or refer to what I said in the beginning.

Okay, the title sounds vague, but I can give more information.

I am currently running Windows Vista on my HP Pavilion laptop. About a month ago, I started having an issue when Vista launched. After all of the pre-load process had finished executing, I got a message that said that Windows Explorer had stopped responding, and was restarting. Then a whole slew of programs and Windows services went through the same process. Everything from McAfee to my touchpad management software either restarted or stopped all together, and then the computer rebooted.

Now whenever I start up the computer, I still get the same problem with the following two processes: Windows Explorer, and Task Scheduler Engine. The computer does not go into a forced reboot anymore.

Certain programs have not worked properly since. The most notable are IE, Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo Messenger. IE behaves like I have no active connection, and I can't sign into either of the messengers. Oddly enough, Firefox works just fine - no problems connecting to the net and opening pages.

As I am the only one who uses this computer, I have no idea where this could have come from.

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Are there any OneDrive for Business users and administrators here? Could you share common problems you experience? We're looking at having this deployed into our VDI infrastructure.

Answer:OneDrive for Business -- common problems?

Only problems I've had thus far were when I had a system that had gone through a bunch of upgrades and stopped syncing. Had to delete the cache and re-sync, but other than that have had no issues. It integrates nicely with Office and Sharepoint, though I wish the sharing interface were better/didn't require the web.

Hi,A question to the community.  I'm a graduate student whose parents aren't exactly rich, so computer purchases are major investments.  I've narrowed my focus to T61p, and can actually afford it with the current discount.  Unfortunately, I've noticed the considerable number of posts complaining about T61p shutting down during graphic-intensive work - and this is something I do not want to deal with. Are the any recent buyers who can attest to not having this type of a problem?  I know that hardware purchases are a crapshoot in any case, but I'd like to hear some positive views, if possible. Thanks!

Answer:t61p graphic problems - how common?

never noticed this problem with my one, but i guess the graphics chip run pretty hot during graphics intensive work..... i always use generic laptop cooler, its like 20 dollars and attach to the base of laptop and have 3 or more fans pulling away all the heat from the base of the laptop.... this not only make the computer cooler (increasing laptop longevity) but also makes it lot faster with high end systems.....

Any thoughts?

Answer:Common NVIDIA 7900 Problems

The "spikes" you are seeing are called artifacts. This only happens if the card is failing for one reason or another. Sorry to say, I dont think new drivers are going to help you out of this one.

If it is not the card itself failing, it could be that it is being underpowered by a failing PSU. ( which could in turn be damaging the card as it goes) What is the wattage of the PSU in the machine?

Our Provincial Government purchased 77 units Lenovo M55e last 2007. Most of it are assigned to our income centers. Apparently, almost all problems we encountered are similar. We have 12 units that bogged down at around 3-4 months of use. All have the same diagnosis: Capacitors on the main board bloated. The system wouldnt boot anymore, sometimes restarting several times before finally shutting down. All systems are protected with an AVR and UPS. The AVR/UPS was not damaged at all. Im hoping anybody could shed some light into this. All our units are under warranty until 4/27/2010. If anybody from Lenovo Philippines can give some answers, please email me at [email protected], or [email protected] TIA.

Answer:Common Problems with our M55e Workstations

Hello Interceptor, Your machines are under warranty.  And the build quality is in issue. In fact, from your description, I would say that the machines are not *fit for purpose*. I would check the contract carefully.  I would then call the relevant account manager in Lenovo Philippines and: 1. lodge a formal complaint and2. insist that the machines are replaced.

Many people are posting in this category with the same problems, so I have put together a guide listing common scenarios and their solutions. One thing to note is that while an In-Place Upgrade may seem easier, there is a greater chance that something may go wrong. Most of the users on this forum agree that doing a clean install is the safer option.

One tip does not fall into any category. If you created the disc yourself (e.g. you downloaded the files, and created a bootable disc from them), try burning at the slowest speed possible.

Make sure the power cable is plugged in, as well.

Problem: Setup is stuck at X%What to try:
Disconnect all unnecessary hardware from the system. This includes hard drives, video cards, USB devices, and expansion cards. Remove all but one stick of RAM.

Use the VGA output on your card if possible.

These problems can also be caused by bad RAM. Run a memory diagnostic overnight, using Memest86 or something similar.

If nothing above works, you may have bad installation media. What condition is the disc in? Verify your copy of Windows came from a reputable source. Try burning a new DVD, using the slowest speed possible.

Problem: Error message “Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition.”
What to try:
Make sure that the partition is primary, active, and formatted with NTFS.

Hi Guys
I recently bought the EasyCap device to capture video from my cctv recorder's hard drive onto my computer and more. The software included was Ulead VideoStudio 11 SE.
After ironing out all the small problems by using different forums here and there, all was well. I then saw Corel's (Ulead) VideoStudio Pro X4 was available on a free 30 day trial so I thought I'd have a look if it was any better for my use. I decided with about 5 days of the trial left that for my basic needs 11 SE was OK and proceeded to uninstall Pro X4.
The next time I went to use VS11 I got a drop down screen saying 'Please wait while Windows configures Common' then 'Gathering required information' the small box filling then renewing and filling 4 blocks before it stopped and displayed 'The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Use the source C:\DocumentsandSettings....\local settings\temp\corelvideostudio pro X4\\setup\Common.msi. Find installation package Common.msi to install product Common.'
The only way to get out of it was to keep clicking 'Close' until eventually it stopped re-appearing, the only problem was that VS11 was frozen on the edit screen or the capture screen depending on the section requested. Then the screen came up about having an error and the program would have to close, and do I want to send a report to Microsoft, after which I was back at my desktop.
I looked for the folders mentioned and only got as far as temp - there was no s... Read more

Okay so you think you have a virus, spyware, malware, or trojans running around merrily on your system.
Heres what you do(a lot of stuff you will have to google too):

1. Download the following programs (google them)
Adaware SE
Kerio Personal Firewall
Some kind of AV.
2. Okay now install all those programs (if you have SP2 for Win XP goto security center and disable the firewall). To get rid of notifications that it is disabled goto options (or something) and theres a checkbox somewhere you got to click.
3. Update the adaware, spysweeper, and AV definitions.
4. Restart in safe mode.
5. Run all those programs.
6. If you run them all and some give you errors (IE: Adaware freezes after you hit next after quarentine take note of what it found. EX: Coolwebsearch...., certain viruses it found), Then go look for removal programs for these specific pests. Most likely there is one out there.
7. Run winpatrol and check what the hell is running at startup. Anything shady get rid of it.
8. Run MSCONFIG (run->msconfig) and check and make sure there are no shady services running IE: q0s02jss.exe.
9. Make sure all the scans completed without problems *refer to 6 if you can't.
10. Turn off system restore : right click my comp -> prop, it should be around there, different for different OS's google it beforehand for your particular OS.

Lately I've had a few issues with my computer, it got slower, and some games didnt install properly due to directX errors. So after looking at some forums for battlefield 3 directX errors I read that uninstalling Origin would be a good idea to fix the problem. While that was going on, first the mouse stopped working (keeping in mind it does that sometimes without there being a problem with the computer), then the screen froze entirely. It came back for a few seconds afterwards, then it froze again and i got the BSOD.

It was set to automatical reboot, so I couldnt read what the error was.

Now the problem I'm having is that, when I start the computer I get these options: Start computer in safe mode , Safe mode with internet, Safe mode with leadtext or whatever and Start windows Normal. Which ever I choose will fail.

Choosing the Normal startup will cause the computer to get stuck on the windows login screen with the wobbly win logo.

Choosing the Safe mode (with and without internet) causes it to stuck, it seems to not be able to load some files.

I've tried running the repair windows option, but the screen went black and nothing else happend.

This is my own personal opinion, but as someone who analyzes BSOD's I am finding that a majority of them are 64bit. It seems like 64bit is more finicky when it comes to memory. After a bit of tinkering they usually go away. My Dell had 1 BSOD and that was basically my fault. I have had good luck with the high end dells.

Hello, not sure if this is the correct spot to ask such a question, so I apologize in advance if this is the wrong area...

Anyways my question is just a basic one. I was just wondering if it matters how often you turn on/off your computer? Like will it cause the computer to run slower, or damage the hard drive, disk drive, motherboard or anything else inside of my computer?

One time I could not figure out what I wanted to do, so I turned the computer on, left it on for a few minutes, than went to the start menu, and selected shut down. After the computer fully shut down, a few minutes later I turned it back on, than repeated this a few times, two or three... At the time I did not really realize I was doing this, as I was deciding to play my PS3, or play on my computer. Anyways yes, just wondering if it could cause any damage to the computer.

Another question I have is, could it cause harm to the computer if the power goes out while its turned on? Not because of an lightning storm, but just from some other reason? Thanks in advance for all of your answers, I greatly appreciate it.

Answer:Common Computer Questions

Modern day computers don't have much problems with power outages.
However, if a drive is formatting or an operating system install or kernel change is happening then some damage to the HDD may occur, you could easily do a reformat to fix it.

However, if you're flashing/updating firmware or BIOS and you lose power permanent damage may occur.
Turning a computer on and off several times has the potential to wear down the components, but not particularly anymore than regular use.
Think about if you were to turn a car on and off a lot. Eventually the ignition wears, the spark plug wears, the alternator wears...
Same with a computer, certain components get some extra wear if you turn it on and off a lot.
Though it won't really hurt it short term, I wouldn't make a habit of doing it, as over time it could cause components in your power supply to wear down.

My thread was closed and I was told to follow the new instructions which I had read already. I am using Windows Vista 64bit and DDS is not compatible with this OS. I did a GMER scan only being able to select the three default options and results turned up with zero results and no log.

Here is the original message for review unless there is another set of instructions for 64bit users.

I have been testing a small application called Alpha Blender which enables me to set windows transparency case to case. I originally did a single file scan on Bit Defender and Kaspersky and both came up with clean results. However, I just used TotalVirus file scanner and it came up with the results below:

Do these results mean that I do in fact have a keylogger on my system tracking my strokes? I am using BlackViper tweaks minimum config so I know it may have helped. Just need insight on weather or not my passwords may be compromised.

I have attached an HT log for review. If any more information is needed I can help.

Do these results mean that I do in fact have a keylogger on my system

No, not necessarily.

Programs, often do not produce the desired results on 64 bit systems.

Lets do a couple of scans to make sure you are clean.

Please do the following:

As a Vista user I will require that all the programs I ask you to run, be run by right clicking the icon and selecting Run as Administrator. Otherwise some programs may fail to operate correctly

Download OTS**to your DesktopClose ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
Double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
Check the box that says Scan All Users
Check the box that says 64 bit
Under Additional Scans check the following:File - Lop Check
File - Purity Scan
Evnt - EvtViewer (last 10)

Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please attach the log in your next post.

I've previously cured a problem with an old Humax 9200T PVR (where the clock module stopped working) by cleaning the relevant circuit board (PCB) with isopropyl alcohol. This is a well known problem with the Humax 9200T and the "fix" is well establish (I've done it a number of times on my machine and that of a relation - all successful). It seems that over time, some residue builds up and bridges some circuits allowing low level tracking across the board.
Well, just recently my ancient Denon DRA-545RD Stereo Receiver started playing up. The left channel was very faint and lacking in bass. By playing with the controls I guessed that the problem lay in the area of the Variable Loudness (VL) control (slight pressure on the control temporarily rectified the problem). As that wasn't a permanent fix I deemed it necessary to dismantle and investigate further.
I could see that slight pressure on the PCB that the VL was connected to would again resolve the problem (but soon dropping back again). My initial thought was a dry joint of some other such soldering issue.
However, having looked at the underside of the PCB (the solder side), I could see some slight traces of black right by the VL connections. A quick swab with isopropyl alcohol seems to have solved the issue (at least for now).
So, my question is this: Is it that common for dirty PCBs to cause such problems? If so, it makes me wonder how many pieces of equipment are binned when a quick swab with isopropyl alcohol might fix the... Read more

lately my newest dvdrw, which i put jumper settings as slave, has been giving me problems. when reading data discs containing music, the tracks skip, which it normally NEVER does. i was just wondering if this is a common problem when putting one drive as slave, and one as master. the master drive is a dvdrom which has also been giving me problems lately, which i'll be replacing in a few days due to a faulty door. i was considering switching the position of the drives when i replace the dvdrom.

Answer:common master/slave dvdrom/dvdrw problems.

For some DVD r/w's they work best when installed as master. Infact My Liteon and my Aopen both came with that recommendation and that is the way they both work. It is also possible with the track skipping that it is the media instead of the drive.

Lenovo, following problems with the X300 are still unsolved, ordered by most annoying first. PLEASE FIX THESE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! The X300 (most apply o X3001 as well) is/was an EXTREMELY expensive Notebook. These problems ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE for a Notebook of that price!!!All these problems mentioned below apply to Windows Vista Business x86-32, I don' t know about other OS because thats what I use and got from Lenovo. 1. The X300 and X301 do FREEZE at random times (1-2 times per week). When that happens, the screen is totally frozen and shows the last state - Neither mouse is movable nor any keys work. You also can't reach the machine via network anymore. No BlueScreen, Log entries or anything. Only a real hard-reset by powering off the machine via pressing the power button for more than 4 seconds can help you to get out of this. Of course you loose your data. No fix available. No workaround available. 2. Battery drains a LOT faster if ANY USB device is enabled. This can be a simple external mouse, the internal Bluetooth or the WWAN card since they all use USB. Power usage increases about 3-4 Watts which is FAR too much for a simple mouse. Also the Notebook becomes more hot when USB is being used. You loose around 1 1/2 hours of precious battery lifetime just because of this. You can check Wattage using Lenovo Energy Manager (look under battery tab). No fix available. Workaround. Don' t use USB/Bluetooth/WWAN when on battery. Not acceptable!&nb... Read more

4. Fingerprint sensor somestimes does not work right away after resuming from standby oder hibernate. No fix available yet. At least none that really solves the problem for good.Workaround: Wait about 30 seconds and retry. If fingerprint sensor still not working, youre doomed to use manual login using password. Not accepptable!I believe this one could be fixed with this patch. If this is not helping, you may try getting into device manager (start >> devmgmt.msc) Then go to properties of TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor. In Power management tab, you have to uncheck at Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Hope this help

Hi guys,

Basically I've acquired an old PC from a friend, I don't really know a great deal about the computer except that it is an Winfast motherboard with an AMD 64 Athlon processor.

I've been trying to fix the PC but when I try to do a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate from a disc the computer repeatedly crashes and shuts down after copying files reaches 100% or before.

I have also tried to load a Windows 8 installer and a Ubuntu live CD, but it still seems to crash after running for a while.

I have feeling that it may be an error relating to the graphics/video card, (which is intergrated into the motherboard). Because sometimes the screen shows just lines. I tried playing with the bios once (pheonix bios) but this stopped it from booting and gave the post beeps to tell me there was a problem with the video card. However I reset the CMOS on the motherboard and it now boots but still crashes when trying to install windows 7.

Are there any other ways around this? i.e. disabling the video card manually, or any other solutions? Kinda hoping this isn't a hardware related problem.
Thanks in advance!

Answer:Boot error, unknown origin, ideas to make this computer boot?

Is the Windows Ultimate disc a retail copy? Or a burned disc? Or?

Is it a 64-bit disc?

I have never heard of the Winfast motherboard brand. It may be too old to support this version of Windows?

Hi. What are the most common/important requirements (other than a computer science degree) for computer programmers and software developers?? What languages and platforms should i know before exiting college?

Answer:Most common requirements for computer programmers

Though I can't say this from an experienced point of view. . .

Most modern languages are good. It's useful to know multiple languages, but not 100% necessary because many programmers use only two (one for scripting and the other [compiled] language for interpreting the script, depending on the scripting language [some scripting languages can be compiled directly rather than creating a program to interpret it]). As for specifics, Java and C++ are a couple of the most commonly used languages. Of course there are others, but those are IMHO the best 2 languages to learn. Also, databases are frequently used, so if you have any extra time and the college doesn't offer database-related content, I'd check them out online or ask a friend who can help you get started.

I got a new computer about two weeks ago. Near the beginning my computer shut down a total for 3 times the first week just randomly. The funny thing is the computer litterally shuts down instantly then 1 second later back to the motherboard screen at startup while my computer lights are still on. I thought it was just a random thing because my friend says he has this problem with XP and not Vista. Well, about 5 days ago the problem got a whole lot worse. I started getting many errors like "This program must close due to an error in windows." and if i dont click it my computer seems to crash. The computer just restarts randomly anytime at any point even if i dont get errors. These errors seem to be a big problem, since if i run Ie for a while i get the problem, and every time i open it again i keep getting hte error message and wont let me search. I tried to restore my computer to a past point and when i restarted my computer it would go into the windows loading screen then back to the motherboard screen and just repeat process. I was really really pissed and went to sleep. When i woke up in the morning, to my luck, it worked. Within the past 10 minutes i havnt been able to use internet explorer cause it literally closes after 3 seconds. I just also tried to run xfire, a im software for gamers, and Steam, a program used to run some popular games, and both of them seemed to close after a few seconds. Another small fact about it is that i have two windows loading scree... Read more

Hello everybody!
I was referred to this site by a friend who told me how helpful you all were to her. I'm hoping that you can solve my problem.

Here's the deal: My Windows XP Home Edition desktop computer (HP Pavilion a712n) will not start-up. About a minute into start-up, it will automatically restart, and this cycle will repeat. I realize that this indicates some sort of crash.

What I was doing right before this happened: I was burning some files to blank CD's, about 20 of them. Once I finished, I started double-checking each one to make sure the files I wanted were on each CD. At one point, the CD drive refused to open and cough up the CD I had put in there. Nothing I tried worked. So, I restarted the computer (Note that I did this manually (perhaps not the best decision) - I held the power button for a few seconds, it turned off, and then I pressed it again to turn it back on) and that's when the problem started occuring.
I'm really unsure of what to do here.

-I've already tried booting in Safe Mode, and all other options presented to me on that screen (Last Known Configuration, Normally, etc.). This does not work; it just restarts again.

-I've also tried booting from a created XP CD. The factory CD was not supplied to me when I bought the computer, and I burned this file to a CD ( This was a link posted on the "Xp Boot "fixes"" thread of this forum. The problem I... Read more

Answer:Computer keeps restarting, common fixes not working

Hi .

Are you sure that you created the XP Recovery disk properly?

Is there any way that you can test it to see if it's truly bootable?

Exactly what happened when you tried to boot to the CD? Did the boot options of your system even try to go to the optical drive option?

If you can get to the safe mode, etc. would seem to me that you ought to be able to boot from the optical drive.

I've actively searched the forum so I apologize if this has been answered - I didn't see it. I own a y510p and started to have the BIOS issue a few days ago - when I turn on the laptop the screen is not on, but the keyboard lights up and you can hear the fan turn on really fast, only for it to shut down and restart itself over and over again. The pressing the power button with everything unplugged did not work, the novo button didn't work, etc. It seems the only way other users on the forum fixed the issue was to send it back into lenovo for a motherboard replacement, but my warranty expired last year. However,  I've been able to successfully boot the laptop after doing the cycle for about 5-10 minutes or so. I tried updating BIOS but it failed - at the moment the only thing I can do is never turn off or restart the laptop so it works properly. Is there anything I can do to fix this issue now that I actually have it on? Or am I just SOL? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hi all,

My computer has been randomly restarting for the past 6 or so months but has recently gotten worse, around two to three times an hour. I have set the system to NOT reboot automatically after system failure, and to write debugging information as a Minidump file, but the computer restarts nonetheless and does not produce any Minidump files.

I have gone through two power supplies trying to solve this: initially I had a Coolermaster eXtreme Power 500W power supply, which I replaced with an Antec Earthwatts 650W power supply thinking that it might be a PSU issue.

My computer is currently on a brand new hard drive as of last night, with a fresh copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed. I updated the motherboard BIOS to the latest version, and I think the drivers are up to date.

Event Viewer shows Event ID 41, source Kernel Power, with a BugcheckCode 0, SleepInProgress false, and PowerButtonTimestamp 0.

Windows Memory Diagnostic showed no errors.

I'm at a loss and would appreciate any help. Thanks!

I have a Compaq Presario about 3 years old with Windows XP Media Center Edition Service Pack 2.

In the last 2 days, when I turn it on, a folder comes up with the start up programs. It is called Common. Inside the folder are 3 other folders called com_os, win2k_xp and win9x_me.

It wouldn't be something I would pay attention to except that at the same time as this started happening, my computer started slowing down, programs don't shut down and it takes over 10 minutes and a lot of "cycling" before the computer shuts down. It also "cycles" a lot while it is on.

I use NOD 32 by ESET as my virus control program, it is up-to-date and it isn't showing any problem with the system.

What could be wrong and how do I fix it?

Hi all,
Having a bit of a crisis here. Last night I had a drink spill into a well vented computer case causing it to power down. After panicly and quickly removing the cords and removing all hardware besides the cpu (which was missed and rather dry after the inspection) and the power source (which I figured was completely dead at that point and could be easily replaced). I took all the components out and left them to dry next to a fan the entire night after a quick wipe, worrying all the way.

So the early morning after I reinsert the gpu, ram and connect the cords and give it a go. To my surprise, it works. Power supply runs, moba isn't trashed and the gpu works (success confirmed by the screen lighting up and telling me to locate the hard drive that isn't plugged in). Obviously ecstatic about this, I plug in more things (hard drive, mouse, keyboard, internet) and I try again. It powers on but the screen no longer lights up so I can't confirm whether or not the computer can properly boot to desktop or the like and after removing the parts I get the same thing.

I've been trying to correct this, see if any damaged parts might be the cause of this. Replacing the gpu gives me the same thing and replacing cords and parts here and there to see if anything changes. Nothing so far and I'm running out of ideas. So I turn to you guys for ideas. What can I do? What might the problem be?

Answer:What does a tea spill, computer damage and blank screens have in common?

Remove everything, just the bare motherboard /cpu and the power supply. Boot and see what happens. You should get BIOS BEEP/ERROR codes for missing RAM. If not, it's a faulty MB or power supply.

Frequently, people use the phrase "common sense" when talking about computer security issues. "common sense" dictates one shouldn't visit websites advertised or otherwise made known to be malicious or avenues for distributing malware. "common sense" dictates one shouldn't necessarily believe everything received via e-mail, yet many people recirculate messages with the same hoaxes well documented on Snopes. Are they not using "common sense" or do they simply "don't know"?

Does "common sense" really factor in with computer security or is it more of matter of education? A number of computer users simply don't know what's up with viruses, malware, firewalls, anti-this and anti-that. Some people want to use their computer as a tool and aren't interested in becoming a "security expert" or anything, nor should they have to be IMO.

So how does using "common sense" factor in with computer security vs "education"? if someone simply doesn't know, does that mean they aren't using "common sense"?

Answer:Computer Security: a matter of common sense, education, or both?

Hello all,

I have two issues with Windows behavior. I don't if it's Windows 10 related or not but I have seen them on Windows 7 and 8 as well. I have a very fast computer and plenty of experience as well with the PC but never figured out the following 2 issues:

1. In Windows 10, when the computer boots, the very first right click on any file, shortcut on desktop or anywhere else etc. takes one-two seconds to display the menu and, after the menu displays there is like a 'refresh' going on, no matter what programs I have installed on my machine and may appear in the context menu. Afterwards, in that boot session, every right click on any file (I repeat) displays the menu in an instant and works like a charm... but the first right click is awkward... it takes up to 2 seconds to display the right click menu...

2. When I hover the cursor on a file in windows explorer (My Computer, This PC, any folder etc.), after a second or so there should be a pup-up displaing the file size, type etc. In Windows 10, 7, 8 (I think), this pop-up never worked for the FIRST file in any folder (alphabetically organised or so) but if I hover on the second file or the others, the menu displays and if I get back to the first file it works as well. This have been happening since Windows 7 for me... I can't find anything relevant on the internet though.

Please help or get back for other clarifications!

Answer:2 Common Issues with Windows for me

Hi, point 1: try diagnosing the context menu entries.

Download, install and run Nirsoft's Shellexview (free); hide all MS entries, disable the rest, and click the 32 but option too to expose more. See if there's any improvement.

If ok, progressively enable groups of extensions until you get undesirable behaviour. Work backwards to discover the extension or extensions causing a difficulty.

Note: I've found Shellexview doesn't necessarily show all context entries. You might also try his Shellmenuview.

The above may help with point 2.

I am trying to open a hopefully recovered file. When I looked at its properties is says "Windows Shell Common Dll" Does anyone know how I can open it? It does also have a spot to click and says "open with" But what can I open it with?

I accidently reformatted my computer. I did a recovery thing with ISO Mechanical software but now I can't seem to actually open anything. I really need to be able to open my documents and any outlook 2007 emails that I had in folders.

If anyone has any suggestions as to how to open some of these I would really appreciate it. It is for work and they are really important. Given the size it looks like something is there. Its hopefully just trying to open it.

Thanks so very much.

Answer:What is Windows Shell Common dll?

Shell DLLs are windows Library files , these files are specifically used by the Operating system. You cannot open these types of files pal !!! In other words you more or less damaged the files not recovered them if they just transformed to that kind of files. The only thing u can do is use software like EASEUS data recovery i am pretty sure you can recover your files if the size of 'em shows they are there. Good luck.

Can someone enlightenme about the most common hacker and malware windows 7 attacks..And how i can counter them...I need to know them and i cant find anything specific for windows 7 at google..the nly things i've found so far are Dos POD etc that are common to every OS (i think at least)..If someone can make a list or at least link me somewhere it would be much appreciated!!Thanks in advance

Answer:common windows 7 attacks

They are so many in number, nobody could possibly make a comprehensive list. But here are a few things you can do to keep safe.

1) Install a good antivirus with real time protection. Among the free ones, MSE, Avast and Avira are popular. Among the paid ones theres NIS and Kaspersky among others.

2) Download and install the freeware Malwarebytes. Its an on-demand scanner you can update and run from time to time.

3) Make sure you have some sort of firewall enabled- whether windows firewall or a 3rd party like Comodo or Zonealarm. Many experts here trust winpatrol.

4) Try not to click on random popups and ads or visit too many shady sites. Software downloaded from torrent sites also often carry malware.

5) Make sure windows updates run regularly- you can adjust them to the setting of your choice.

6) Dont click on suspicious email attachments.

7) Keep UAC enabled on your computer- people sometimes complain its inconvenient but it can really save your bacon.

Can someone help?
I have a new computer. Anyway, the TMP files are always showing. i cannot hide them. I have gone to folders and clicked on hide hidden folders. But they still show. I am scared to delete incase it affects the real file. If this makes sense? So i have an excel file. I see the file AND its temp file. If i delete it, will it affect the excel data that is saved?
It is annoying. Any new files added or changed makes a new TMP file.
Any help?

Answer:Windows Shell Common Dll

TMP or Temporary files are backup files or cache files created by the application being used. In this case, Excel. They are safe to delete. It is a good practice to clean your system on a regular basis. I recommend Ccleaner as a cleaning tool to keep your system uncluttered.

O! and by the way, Welcome To TSG!

Hi all!

Just starting out on this forum, so I hope you can help me out.

I have a program installed that uses a dll. Recently, I started getting the following error message:
"The application or dll xxxx is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette." (xxxx being my dll path and name; message translated from french, but I'm sure you'll recognise it, I've seen the same kind on the forums elsewhere)

My issue is not to replace the dll, I know it's not corrupt, but it is in a weird format, which might explain the message.

However, what I'd like to know is why windows is suddenly so worried about this dll, and if there's anything I can do to simply tell windows to ignore it. At which point does windows decide to check this local dll? (the program is installed locally in it's own folders, nothing in system32 or elsewhere)

Hope you can help me out!

Thanks in advance!

Answer:origin of message : "xxx is not a valid windows image."

Generally this error means you got the wrong version of the dll installed. IE you are running XP and installed one for Win98 and the one for XP is slightly different.

Sometimes this is a path issue and all you need to do is to copy (not move) the DLL and put it with the others in System32

In addition there are a few specific problems which cause this type of error

Autocad also has a similar problem for which there is a patch.
So please be more specific.
Is this just one dll? If so what is it?
What application and what consequence?

You should also try reregistering the dll
using your example
go to start / run and type
regsvr32 xxxx.dll
hit enter and wait for it to say success

I foolishly tried a disk cleaning utility called PC disk clean that i really had no knowledge of. It seems it was really Common Name & Common Name Toolbar which led to system crashes and a restart that kept turning off and restarting. I ran the virus scans and malware cleaners as recommended by this site and it seems to have worked! I would really appreciate a clean bill of health from one of your HJT experts pls. I upgraded from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 8 Professional.
I have a Synaptics Pointing device as my touchpad. Version 6.something I think.
I downloaded the general Win8 driver from Synaptics' website and installed it. Everything works fine; two-finger scroll and swipe; right side help-dockbar call works, and left edge swipe to another window (or session or app; whatever it's called) works. When I go to Pointing properties, that is fine, but when I decide to go to the "Properties for Synaptics TouchPad V6.2 on PS/2 Port 1", it opens fine, but after several seconds, a window that says "Windows Shell Common dll not working, blah blah blah". How can i fix this? there are some gestures that I would like to change.

Answer:Windows Shell Common dll not working

any help please?

Okay, so my computer is really ****ed up and I'm just going to post it all here. Hopefully someone knows what the hell is wrong. Sorry that this is going to be so long, but the more info the better right?

System info:
HP Pavilion ze5300
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition version 5.1.2600

I found this in the Help and Support Center, don't know if it means anything:
The application, C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NAVW32.EXE, generated an application error The error occurred on 01/10/2006 @ 20:50:22.685 The exception generated was c0000094 at address 194D3C42 ()

So this is a brand new Hard Drive, I installed it in Jan. My last one crashed horribly. So, I set up windows and everything, then tried to install Norton from the internet site they gave me. It didn't install correctly and messed up my registry. Windows explorer opens at start up to Common Files. There is nothing in the folder. So I tried to fix it in my registry- bad idea. ****ed up my computer and had to run the XP install disks to fix it.

Everything was running fine, I havn't tried to install the Norton. But now its back. I don't know what happened but the windows explorer is opening up at start up. I also have a shit load of spyware, so I used Spybot and Ad aware, but still get a pop up when I open an IE. Its from or and I don't know how to get rid of them.

There is also other probl... Read more

Try removing:

O2 - BHO: Yvakt Class - {98B9F201-C701-41F1-B338-7E5E0E6D768F} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ejrwx8drl.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E5E2A3E7-00FE-4D31-A030-A10799DDCA66} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gjZC2XV] "C:\WINDOWS\system32\slk8x2peu.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BrowserUpdateSched] C:\WINDOWS\system32\kwintrag.exe FI002
O4 - Startup: Zeno.lnk = C:\WINDOWS\system32\kwintrag.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {4ABF810A-F11D-4169-9D5F-7D274F2270A1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmonwv.dll

You have a bunch of trusted zones, you can remove these, but check your browser setting for any more, make sure there are no trusted sites, UNLESS you know and set them as trusted:

O15 - Trusted Zone: *
O15 - Trusted Zone: *
O15 - Trusted Zone: (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: (HKLM)

O18 - Filter: text/html - {0FA7FD6B-47C3-425B-AE30-36383F1C4503} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ejrwx8drl.dll

Also, skip Nortons, try AVG free. The error message can be ignored, it was a log of a crash from January. I hope you have anti-virus and a firewall running.

I suggest you do the above from safe mode, followed by multiple scanners. Ad-Aware, Spybot, and one online virus scanner before rebooting. Anything else, please run our spyware tutorial, and post in that forum. Read more

After last week's Windows updates my Windows Common Controls 5.0 went missing. I can no longer see it in Excel VBA Available References list. I see that comctl32.dll file is still there in C:\Windows\SysWOW64 . What happened and how can I restore
these controls? I know that one can replace version 5.0 with version 6.0, but I have commercial installations on PCs that can not be upgraded to ver 6.0.

Answer:how to windows remove shell common

If they are small then why worry about them?I think you are referring to some sort of old search or links. In any case don't play with it. 1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

A recent problem has sprung up out of nowhere. Earlier today I was in skype playing with some friends and all of a sudden my skype stopped working. As I searched around I went into recording devices and the sound levels next to my mic was gone and the window immediately stopped responding and gave me the error message that is the title of this thread. I've tried looking up new drivers my my headset (Razer carcharias) but no drivers were on the site and I just finished a system file check where is repaired some corrupt files but that still had no effect. I'm literally stumped on this and have no idea how to fix this error as I have never had this happen.
