Left-hand pane in Explorer is blank

Question: Left-hand pane in Explorer is blank

Yes this has been answered before (in 2001, I think) but the solution as provided via Rollin' Rog:
REGEDIT4

failed to work. Maybe because IE is version 6?

The symptoms are the same - blank, b'ground-coloured left pane. The above was entered (I also tried 'shdocvw.dll' but no dice.

Any further possible solutions, please?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If I expand a folder that's down towards the bottom and there's a lot of subfolders, then everything moves up to make room for the subfolder list. That's as it should be. But about the time I go to click on one of the subfolders, the whole list moves down again and you have to scroll back down to get where you want. After that, it stays put. It's an bug/annoyance that I hope someone gets fixed.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Answer:Windows Explorer left hand pane

I think the OP is noticing the little quirk in Win 7 where Explore does not bring the left pane target folder (the one with focud) up to the to of the pane, throwing it instead to the bottom of the pane.

A nuisance for sure, but unresolved to my knowledge.

My pc motherboard was replaced a couple of weeks ago and when the engineer reinstalled windows me the left side of the explorer window remained greyed out.(It will show history and favourites, search, etc when selected).Although its only niggly I would prefer to see the folders on the left and the contents of these folders in the right pane.I have tried changing folder options to reflect the other pc I have access to but this has not resolved the problem.I don't want to reinstall windows with my original copy as I beleive it will uninstall all the hours of windows updated that I have done since.Has anyone got any ideas? Thanks

Answer:Explorer not showing me the left hand tree pane

If you are running XP there should be a button labelled "Folders" to the right of the "Search" button at the top of the window (when "viewed as a web page") Click this and the panel should appear with the folders in it.

I am very new to the PC world, trying to find my way around and running XP. During this learning process I somehow lost the Windows Explorer Default Pane to the Left of the window (it used to show System Tasks/Other Places/Details in separate panels).I can still get Search and Folders by pressing the buttons in the tool bar but when both are de-selected I only have a large window with no sign of the original panel. Please can someone tell me if it is possible to recover this information as I found it very helpful. If so can you also tell me how to do it in simple terms. Many thanks.

Answer:Windows Explorer - Left Hand Default Pane

Open any Explorer window, select Tools from the top of the window, select Folder Options. Under the first heading (Tasks) make sure "Show Common Tasks In Folders" is selected, if not left click it. Click OK.

I have looked at everything thoroughly and cannot figure out how it happened or how to get the information back. If I click on the folder button on the tool bar the whole pane will close and click again and the pane appears but is empty. Has anyone run into this issue using Windows 2000. Hi,

i love the new left side pane in folder view, but i cannot seem to get it to show 'Desktop'

id like to place it where the red line is

[also, can you change the icons for 'libraries' ]

Answer:Customize the left hand folder pane?

Hi al4x,

The closest I got with adding the desktop icon to the side pane is you can add the desktop Icon by clicking the Favorites arrow.(it might be already there). If you don't have any favorites or the arrow is not there you can add the Desktop Icon to it by Clicking and holding the icon and drag it to the favorites tab..

I have not been able to figure out if you can just add an icon anywhere in the side pane my guess in no..

And I have not found a way to change the icons for the libraries..(I don't think you can)

Hope this Helps..

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

Answer:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

I have a blue screen problem. Don't know if I should post it here or not but here is my problem.

I have windows 8. I updated to 8.1. So far so good. That is until this morning. I don't know if this is in fact a Windows 8.1 issue or if anyone has ever experienced this before. I turned on the computer. I got the 'Hi' message followed by the next message of windows getting my apps updated. I then had a blank blue screen with a 'start' in the top left hand corner and an arrow in a box pointing to the next page. On the next page I had APPS on the top left hand corner and a blank box. I typed in 'desk top' even tho' that is not an 'app' as such. It took me to a blank black page with a bin in the top left hand corner. It looked liked my machine had been completely wiped. This has never happened before and I tried to Google it but the answers given did not have any correlation to what happened to me...any clues anyone?" Sorry guys, I just reread my post....I forgot to say that my computer has been functioning as normal all day .. What I did was to turn it off and back on again and it worked as normal. The thing is, I don't now trust it and want to know what? why and is it something I need to address.

Answer:Explorer.exe Left Pane Folder Tree

I had a look at your problem just after you posted eary this morning. Was not sure that i understood what is going on.Thought you had got your Windows Explorer.exe confused with internet explorer.exe.I also considered you had poss a bad update of IE5 as it appears to only have one choice in the add/remove programs for it.Considered at some stage you may have had a virus, but you don't mention anything about a virus scan or any error messages.I would suggest that your problem is wide spread through-out your pc and i think you have issues with your registry and corrupt files within the windows installation."I could also be very wrong" You could go for a quick re-install of windows 98 over itself and see if that cures the problem. It may give you a chance to keep all software programs that are installed and running properly,if that be the case.If it was me, i would not hesitate to reformat and do a repeat clean install of windows.Unless someone can come up with a better idea.

I just reformated my hard drive and reloaded XP Home. The problem I'm having, is that when I open Windows Explorer, (not Internet Explorer) the left pane (tree) does not cascade automatic to show all the folders. It just shows Documents, My Computer and the + sign beside each one to expand to the folders. It used to do this automatically in the past. I've tried all the view options on the tool bars, all property settings and nothing works. I'm running active desktop like I always do. Any ideas?

Thanks, Steve

I can get Windows Explorer to open to a specific folder in the Right Pane, but it only shows the "Computer" or "C:" level in the Left pane. I have tried pinning the folder to "Start", and have also tried various switches (n, e, select) as the target in Explorer.

Attached is an example where a shortcut in Start opens TechInfo in the right panel, but not the left.

Is there any way to open the folder in the left pane also? It's a minor issue, but a pain!

So, the left-hand bar is supposed to represent the desktop, and the contents on it, like in XP. I'd like to make it look more normal.

1. I want to remove: libraries, favorites, homegroup, and network. When you remove them, they just come back. Even if they aren't on the desktop. What gives?

2. I want to add My Documents above My Computer. And have My Computer defaulted to being opened (so I can see my drives.)

3. I would like the Recycling Bin to appear.

4. I would like "Desktop" to be atop the list, as that is how it makes the most sense to me.

Is there a way to re-enact this through Libraries? Or to actually make it happen? Or a different program? What's the deal though, the Windows 7 look is so... illogical and unorganized and cluttered.

This is something that's been bothering me since I upgraded this Dell XPS8700 to windows 10 some two weeks or more ago.

The left pane in File Explorer seems to duplicate my drive letters and info other than what's under the entry "This PC".

If I look down the list, starting just below the Libraries folder, the drive letters are repeated but not all of them.

Like I have under This PC : C: , DVDRW D:, E:, F: , a card reader, H,L,K, external drives L:, another card reader letter M:, a second external drive N:, followed by some NAS folders I have mapped, V, W, X. and Y.

Down past the Libraries folder are again: H, L, N, M, K, and I, then Network etc, Homegroup etc.

Hard to describe, I could do a screen shot and post it if that would help see it.

How and why are all these drive letters getting into this tree twice? Anyone?

Whenever explorer opens, I can never find the folders I want easily. Therefore, I put them in the Favorites part of the navigation pane. However, still, when I open explorer, the left pane goes somewhere so low down that I can't even see my the favorites folder. Every single time I have to scroll all the way up to the top to find basic things like "Desktop." Is there ANY WAY to be able to always have the favorites bar showing on the left? To never have it disappear, no matter what folder in the tree Windows has opened? This was fine in XP. Its just AWFUL in windows 7. Takes time and is totally frustrating, and there seems to be no way to fix it as far as I have researched? Can anyone help me fix this?

On a side note, which is not nearly as important as my issue above, (because this one frustrated me to the point of no longer caring), is there any way to have the desktop fill up the space of a removed icon, but yet not reorganize the entire screen to where the last organization of your files is totally reorganized the next time you check? I want to be able to save things to the desktop and always have them come up AFTER everything else on the desktop. I want them to stay there, in that order when I shut down the computer, if I move something, I want all the files in front of that thing I moved to move back one space. My problem is how the left window reacts when I select a folder.

If I have a long list of folders in the left window and I click on the small arrow to the left of a folder, it is supposed to show the list of sub-folders that are in the selected folder.

It does but here is my problem. Lets say the folder that I select is in the middle of the left window. When I click on the small arrow, Windows Explorer shifts the folder list down so that the selected folder is near the bottom of the window. Generally I can only see one of the sub-folders. And then I have to use the slider to move the selected folder up so I can see more than one sub-folder.

I wish it would leave the folder where it was and show as many sub-folders as possible underneath the selected folder. I hope this explanation makes sense.

Answer:The Navigation Pane on the left side of Windows Explorer

I tried it on my Computer and the on clicking the arrow it moves up as it should instead of going down. Please try out the following steps to correct the problem.

1. Restore the folder to default as follows and check if that helped:

a. Open windows explorer
b. Click on Organize
c. Select folder and search option from the list
d. Select General tab, and select “Restore Default”

2. Run an online scanner to check any malware or virus activity. The link that will help you to run a free scan on the computer is Windows Live OneCare

3. If the above steps do not help then run the SFC (System File Checker) scan on the computer to fix the system file errors on the computer. To run SFC scan, follow the steps below:

a. Click Start ,
b. Click All Programs ,
c. Click Accessories , right-click Command Prompt ,
d. And then click Run as administrator.
e. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow or Continue.
f. At the prompt, type sfc /scannow and hit enter. Once the scan is complete, restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Please tell if this was of any use.

Not sure if that's possible. Use the up or down button until you have highlighted the one you want. Then press Enter or Space to update the pane to the right. You use the left and right buttons to collapse/expand sub folders.

I find Space the best and fastest option since you use both hands. One to navigate and the other to refresh the right pane.

Hi Guys!
Sorry if this was posted already, really busy!

Well this is my problem...i have a couple of pcs with windows xp, and i want to disable the windows explorer view, like explore all users by right clicking on the start menu orb. Or simply as when opening the file explorer, never having the left pane with the file list tree, so that no program can activate this view...

I have older people working in this company and sometimes they just dont let go of the left click on the mouse, making them moving files they are not supposed to.

We use a access database that views its contents (like docs, pics, gifs) always with this left pane with tree listing of all the folders...

I would be gratefull for this solution...

This one is getting really annoying. I have noticed that sometimes when using Windows Explorer, if I rename a folder, the right hand pane shows the correct (new) folder name, but the left hand pane still displays the old folder name.

As a matter of fact, even if I right click on the folder name on the left hand pane, and choose "Rename", and then rename it there, when I hit Enter to save the name change, the folder name on the left (that was just highlighted and changed) will revert back to the original name....but the name in the right hand pane will show the change.

For some reason, it just doesn't seem to want to update the view in the left hand pane. And then, to top it off, after some undetermined amount of time, the left hand pane will "refresh" to show the new folder name, but it will STILL show the old folder in the list as well. If I right-click the parent folder and choose "Open in New Window", the view is correct, but the original window still shows the old folder names.

This may only happen after my Explorer windows (I usually have 4 or 5 up) have been open for a long time, as I tried to reproduce with new windows and the behavior is normal (left hand pane updates view immediately).

I've reported it already, but just curious if anyone else has experienced this odd behavior.

Answer:Windows Explorer left-pane not showing changes to folder names

Hi CorrsFan

I think this is just a part of it being a Beta still. I have tried to delete the HomeGroup section, and while it goes for awhile as soon as it refreshes it's back. Just like some sections of the Registry is locked out and some permissions can't be changed, these things will all be sorted out by RC1. Renaming any system item is locked down in the registry and Left (Navigation) Pane items seem to be a part of this lockout.

Make sure to send MS Feedback on this so they know what works and doesn't.

In Windows Seven if I right click in Explorer left pane Favorites I can then press 'e' to open that folder in a new window. In Vista, I have to press 'o'. Being right handed and wanting to use the mouse, now I have to reach across with my left hand to press the 'o' key.

Is there no way to change the underline/shortcut/accelerator whatever they call it key in the context menu? I see no way to do it. I look in the Registry and I don't see any "&" in front of any of the letters. But the short cut letter is there just the same. There must be a way to change it.

All I've been able to find is turn the display of underline on and off. No info how to change the letter itself.

When Windows Explorer is open, if I right-click on anything in the left-pane, Explorer crashes and re-starts.

I've googled, and tried using NirSoft's ShellFix, disabled the most common issues googling resulted in:
#1 Remove Nvidia context-menu and for desktop right-click.
#2 Remove Spybot Search & Destroy context-menu.
#3 Remove Nvidia "nvshext.dll" (not found after using ShellFix)

None of these resulted in a fix at all. I've tried booting in safe mode, the same problem exists. I can right-click on file and folders in the right pane of Explorer, but right-clicking in the left pane, whether folder or drive. Explorer still crashes.

I found a Microsoft page regarding a similar issue, and to be on the safe side, I tried that. Still doing the same thing.

This is really driving me crazy, since I use portable backup drives to re-install my games onto the system but it's pretty hard to drag and drop when you can't have a second Explorer pane open.

Anyone have any ideas?

Just left-click "Open in new window" from the right-click menu. No need to use the keyboard at all for that. Using the mouse buttons is quicker anyway (at least it should be if you already have the mouse under your hand).

Dear All:

I have been experiencing an annoying issue in Windows (Windows Ultimate 64 bits, Home premium 64 bits and Windows 8 Pro 64 bits) min

After working well for a few minutes, the windows explorer freezes upon launch, only displaying the "favorites", "libraries" and "homegroup" icons in the left pane. The elements in the mentioned icons cannot be accessed and sometimes they have a magnifying glass on them and the icons on the desktop are blank.

Also, Control Panel windows is often empty after this error takes place.

This issue often, but not necessarily, comes about when i try to check the properties of a file, with windows explorer freezing immediately.

I have reinstalled Windows 7 twice to no avail.

Anyone has ideas on how to fix this? It's rendering my two laptops unusable.
Highly appreciate any useful advice.

Thank you,
Madasco

Lately, when I open up any folder, I get a blank pane (picture included.)

Do you have any ideas how to fix this?

Thanks,

Answer:Blank Windows Explorer Pane

Hello Justin,

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

You could try a restore point to a time before the problem started. Info here if needed. System Restore

You could also do a system file check (sfc). Info here: SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Please keep us posted.

Hello
I do not have a folder pane (a folder tree with the Desktop, my Computer, the Network) in Explorer any more.
This is a rather annoiing and difficult problem, and have searched several times for hour with NO solution for Vista.

I do not know exactly when this started, since I'm not normally using Windows Explorer that much. Now when I open the Explorer, the place where the Folder pane should be is totally blank, as seen below. (My Layout is set to "Navigation Pane")

I can see contents of folders in the Right pane and navigate through them, but can't see any folder hierarchy in the Left Folder-pane -- it's just totally blank as shown above.

Does anyone have a solution? I'd rather not re-install Vista...

PS: The problem seemed to exists in W9x and ME too Windows Explorer-Left Pane Empty - Tech Support Guy Forums and has a fix from MS, to delete a part of the registry, but this does not work for Vista.

Thanks a lot in Advance,
Ralfko

PS: I've read Brink's information on resetting Folder View settings and tried this to, but it did not help.

I click on the "+" beside the icon of a drive or folder near the bottom of the left pane of my Windows 7 Explorer. If the list of sub folders that opens is longer than the distance to the bottom of the pane, the lower icons become hidden. Those subfolders extend "below" the pane -- out of view. I want the contents of the pane to shift upward so that all the sub folders of interest are visible -- like on my XP computer and my win98 computer?

Is there a way that I can fix this?

Any suggestions?

When I open an instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane show little or nothing (no drives, folders, etc.). Also the preview pane does not show a preview for any selected files (See Capture1.JPG).
If I open a second (or higher) instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane functions properly (the preview still does not show) (See Capture2.JPG).
I have previews set to show (See Capture3.JPG).
Also occasionally, the file icons will be blank instead of showing the file type specific icon. When this happens, the address bar also seems to take a long time to load. The load bar will stop before reaching the end and won't finish (See Capture4.JPG).

Does anyone know what is going on or how to fix this?

FYI I am running 64 bit Windows 7 Pro.

Answer:Windows Explorer: Navigation Pane and Preview Pane Bug

Try Explorer++ and see if you get the same problem.

Need to enable "Folders" view.
If it works then you can rule out problems with system files and it's probably a buggy shell extension.

It's portable and runs without installation.

Is it possible to have no Nav Pane when opening a Desktop folder, but have Nav Pane when opening Win Explorer? Like it was in WinXp/Win98/Win95?

I recently bought an HP laptop at Costco online. They let me configure it, and I put in one of the high end, 512 MB video cards. I love the games. I wonder if that exacerbates the problem. I could conceivably return the laptop, but I hate to. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Silly question, I expect, but no manual accompanied the laptop (T400), which is second hand. Anyway, there's an ejectable latticed tray on the short side on the left with numerous places for things. But what things? Anybody know? It might be useful for expanding hard drive capacity for example... Apart from the quick setup guide and instructions for professional technicians, there doesn't seem to be an ordinary user's guide for this Lenovo thinkpad. There's nothing on Lenovo, com's website - which is strange to say the least. There must be one somewhere, but where? Pluto46

Hi,

First post here.

The problem is that I am getting no sound from my left hand PC speaker. The right hand one is playing fine. I have unplugged them from the back of the tower and plugged them in again and this makes no difference, although I did hear some very, very low sound from the left speaker while the plug was halfway back in the tower.

I have tried another set of speakers and the same thing is happening with them, so I know the speakers themselves are not faulty.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Rich.

If onboard, then try a separate soundcard. If you`re already using a separate soundcard, then try the onboard sound.

The x.x is the version number.Select it and choose Add/Remove (or Remove or whatever it is). From the box that appears, choose Repair. Then wait. You will need to restart your computer after. This may not solve it, but if it's a missing file or setting, then this will pick it up.QuickHare

On my laptop with XP-PRO SP2 installed I can rename a file or folder in both the left and right explorer panes by slowly left clicking twice on the file or folder name (not the icon). I really like not having to right click and select rename from the context menu. However, I am unable to rename files and folders in the left explorer pane on either of my two desktop PCs, one with XP-PRO SP2 installed, the other with XP-PRO SP3 installed. Is there a Registry modification or a setting somewhere I could change on my two desktops to allow me to rename in the left pane by clicking the name twice. I am comfortable making Registry modifications and I am careful to make backups of the Registry keys and values before changing them. Hi guys,

I have a Toshiba Equium laptop which overheats on the left hand side whenever it has been plugged into the charger for longer than about 15 minutes.

This heat also goes through to the mouse pad, does anyone know what the problem is?

Thanks

Answer:Equium overheats on the left hand side

What is the model of laptop?

Does it also heat up when the laptop is turned off? Does the battery get hot as well? If the battery gets hot, I would take the laptop to an Authorised Service Center as soon as possible.

If its only getting hot when the laptop is turned on, the CPU may simply be overheating by dust buildup in the heatsink.

The keyboard can go out and when they do it is usually a section of keys not the whole thing. Try going into device manager find the keyboard and "uninstall" it then reboot to let Windows reacquire the driver. You can also turn it off remove the battery and power and hold down the power button 15 seconds then reattach power and power on. You can also go into BIOS (F10 setup) and restore default settings. If none of these works it is time for a new keyboard. They are fairly cheap and easy for the end user to install do it yourself. Post back if you want a link to a place to buy the keyboard and an instruction manual.

The ability to pin a shortcut to the left hand of the start menu was a function apparently removed in RC. This really affected my productivity with 10 so I reverted to 7 after a week. I would like to go back to 10 so does anyone know if this has been reintroduced?

Answer:Pin top left hand of start menu in RC (not tile)

Hello Joew,

If you like, you can add or remove folders from the Start list like below.

Hi,

a while ago i had a problem with some videos not streaming, so at some site it recommended to turn something off in my explorer settings.

The videos then all played on different blogs etc but since a week or two, some of the videos im trying to watch on different sites show up in the top left hand side of the screen, flikkering, but the controls like full screen and movement of the time bar still stay in tact at the place where the video should be shown, you just have to estimate where the controls would normally be and then click or drag..

Can you please help me to put the settings back, and then still see the different videos unlike the the problem it originally started of with ?

Thank you very much,

Dennis

Answer:[SOLVED] video's and ads appear in top left hand screen

What was recommended to be turned off in Explorer (or was it Internet Explorer..)?

And what recommended it?

Was it a Windows screen or message from the website?

I have recently had to format my C:\ Drive. I am running XP with service pack 2I also run a LAN to my RISC OS Computer. On setting this up the following problem which was on the PC was "cured" I am not sure how. However, on re booting the PC with or without the other computer the problem has returned. It is that the left hand panel of the file/folder window which displays the list of componants from "My Desktop" through to "recycle bin", has to be activated each time a file window is opened, by clicking on the "Folders" icon at the top of the window next to the "search" icon, furthermore, before the re installation of XP I was able to get a different set of icons down this left hand panel which included delete, change name etc., it was in about four sections which could be indempenantly opened of closed, I can no longer get this. Can anyone Help Please, (also why does windows not appear to work the same way each time it is installed?)

Answer:File Window, left hand panel.

Are you referring to the Folders pane in Windows Explorer, if so does this help click here

There's a slot there, skinny and wide, which flexes whenever I put my left hand on the handrest.  i want to put something in it to stop it flexing, and I'm hoping that i can buy a plastic filler piece somewhere (like the one in my ExpressCard slot) but I don't know what it is.  Smart Card, perhaps?  Does anyone know if such a filler piece exists?

Answer:What's the slot on the left hand side, towards the front?

erik_h, According to Service Manual it is SmartCard Reader indeed.

Hi guys,i have a problem, i was working on this PC that had a problem. the problem was - when it is turned on,nothing comes on.There is a black screen and blinking cursor (looks like an under-score) [blink]_[blink]that just keeps blinking.Okay this is what I did. I thought the hard disk was damaged, I get a brand new hard disk drive (SATA) and inserted in, and start installing the System Restore Discs and Operating system CD, it is a HP Compaq Desktop dx2200 MT.Every thing goes perfectly well, it starts up fine, XP is installed up and running, all other software are being installed. It all looks great up until I slave the original hard disc in order to copy back the users files back onto the new disc. By the way all copying goes well until the PC suddenly freezes, it doesn't respond to all the keyboard keys or the mouse whatsoever, even pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL in an attempt to open the the Task Manager doesn't work. I turn of the PC by pressing the power button. Remember there are 2 hard discs connected now in the PC, Master and Slave, both are SATA.When I turn it on, the blinking starts again.I try removing the original hard drive (the one I slaved) and still it doesn't boot correctly. I try booting either of them alone, still nothing,I don't think it is a virus problem, because I installed Sophos and had it updated straight after the OS, and if I had connected the slave hard disk it could had detected it.these are things I have tried.1.Removed RAM card and p... Answer:PC at startup is only blinking at top left hand corner

It's a Compaq system...did you check the Compaq support site?

From what I see, HP system have proprietary boot mechanisms...which isn't necessarily good for what may be the problem.

My guess is that the MBR is damaged, Black Screen (fixmbr) - http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;314503. Using the fixmbr command from the XP Recovery Console of a MS Genuine XP CD...is the normal cure.

But you have a Compaq and I don't know if that command would be effective with your system.

To attempt to clarify my last request. On clicking on the "C":\ icon one would expect to see a window containing athe files contained therein, this happens as expected, but on clicking the Folders Icon at the top of the window I get an Explorer type of "Tree", which is ok, but how can I get the (approx) 4 menus which contain various items such as delete, change name, plus many others. I did have this option before I had to re format and re install XP home and SP2. All the folder windows have the same problem.

Answer:File Window, left hand panel.

Have you tried toggling off the folder tree by pressing the Folders button? The folder tree and search facility just toggle on and off, replacing the default pane that you have described. If that doesn't work, then it's a much deeper problem and may require a repair or re-installation.
