Floppy Drive Keeps Scanning When opening a "Text Document"

Question: Floppy Drive Keeps Scanning When opening a "Text Document"

For the last few days I have been experiencing a problem. Whenever I open a Text Document my Floppy Drive keeps scanning. I don't have any Floppy Disk in the drive and it scans for about 10 seconds. I have Norton Internet Security 2004 installed and I think it may be that the AntiVirus keeps scanning the Floppy Drive. I am not sure on how to disable scanning the Floppy Drive and if someone knows how to do it could you please instruct me on how to disable it. If there are any other ways to help me with this problem could you please post some suggestions.
Thank You!

Preferred Solution: Floppy Drive Keeps Scanning When opening a "Text Document"

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

There appears to be no open thread on this issue...disappearing context menu "new/textdocument" option.

After trying several alternate text editor demos I found that my registry .txt entry was empty except for the (default) line item...I replaced the entry with an expanded entry found elsewhere on this forum which called for notepad.exe and included ItemName and NullFile etc.

After rebooting and checking my program associations to verify that my new editor, EditPlus, was the default, I found that the "new/text document" option appears and works in all the usual places including the desktop...

But there must be more to the story... Notepad still appears in the ItemName entry. Is this just a default reg entry, with the actual default program assignments appearing elsewhere?

BTW, as an old poster suggested elsewhere X-Setup has been de-commissioned but is still available on MajorGeeks. It has some editing capability but wouldn't add a new TXT item because "it already existed" (already registered).

Hello, TSG!

Just yesterday I was using the computer normally until I got a Blue Screen. Getting a blue screen is usually something normal that occurs to my every so often, so I didn't mind it and rebooted the computer normally. However, I got two more blue screens within the next hour. The 3rd time rebooting, my computer starts to act strange as if it had a virus. Upon powering up the monitor would just display a black screen with two lines about something --- which I don't remember, sorry --- and stayed like that unless I plugged out the power cord or held on the power button to shut down. Then when after a few tries it boots and displays a message "Floppy Disk Failure" and "Drive 1 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1" (and the same message for Drives 2 and 3) show up. Also it asks me to continue loading by pressing the F1 Key.

When Windows loads the first time, it displays a message saying a bunch of hardware has just been installed and ready for use. Also, my internal clock resetted itself back to Monday, November 07, 2005 (Which, if I recall, is the date when I got the computer) and my speakers do not work.

TL;DR Version
3 blue screens within a short time
Floppy disk fail
Drivers 1-3 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1-3

Anyway, I browsed through Google but I haven't seen anyone with both problems. I disabled my Floppy Disk Drive and that message doesn't show up anymore, but the others do and my computer still isn't fixed. I ran a vir... Read more

Since a couple of days I've been having this weird glitch. When I double-click the drive folder, the folder does not open. Instead, the Search Results window is displayed. However, when I right-click the folder, and then choose "Open", the drive folder opens normally displaying my programs etc. Dunno if this is related or not but this began after I installed IE7, the first time around installing the installation crashed on me, second time around worked.

This only happens to the drive folders, not the folders/ subfolders themselves, they still function normally.

After hours and days of wasting time and energy, trying to get the default options back by attempting to customize the folder options/ views ,I finally came across this Microsoft Help & Support page which addresses my problem. I followed the steps described therein, with the result that now Notepad opens each time I doubleclick to open the drive folder...

I need advice please!

For a month or so now I have been unable to read the PDFs sent to me, as the text is "garbled" ... here is an extract of one such PDF document I opened using Foxit PDF reader

I have uninstalled Foxit Reader, and reinstalled it, but the issue remains. Any ideas what may be causing the problem? Thanks in advance for any input that may resolve this.

Hi hedge,

On many motherboards, the image of the BIOS is copied

I just resolved an issue I had with the wireless connectivity of my Acer notebook computer and now I am getting strange error messages. When I try (not every instance) to open device manager I will get the message "Failed to open empty document." From there I will occasionally get "Parser" messages that say "Value creation failed at line 843" or "line 422." I read what I could find about these messages and it points to MMC as the cause. How do I go about fixing this annoying problem if anyone knows?

Answer:Stuck on "scanning and repairing drive (c:): 100% complete"

At some point, you're going to have to power off and power back on and see what happens. Sigh. Welcome to the wonderful and incredibly exciting world of Windows troubleshooting. If you're lucky, it got stuck after all the important bits were fiddled and things will be OK. If not, you'll have to try again, and may very well end up having to make a clean (re)install, and proceeding from there. But you can't do anything until the PC starts running again. So, cross your fingers, hope for the best, and cycle the power. Then report back here...

Hi. I have an HP Pavilion 17 Laptop PC. The partitions were recently borked. So I figured out a way to fix it. I created a Windows 8.1 Bootable Media from Microsoft, reinstalled Windows 8 (Windows 8.1) and upgraded it to Windows 10. The sad thing is that I still can't get it to boot to HP Recovery. But I am not going to worry about that. It's fixed and that's what matters. The only problem now is that each time it boots up or restarts, it says "Scanning and repairing drive at 100%".

Also to Shawn (@Brink), I wasn't sure where to post this thread, so I just posted it in General Discussion. If you need to move it to appropriate place, feel free to do so.

Answer:Each bootup and restart says "Scanning and repairing drive at 100%".

It sounds as if you need to do a CHKDSK with repair on your drive and all its partitions. Have a look at the following tutorial and especially some of the methods in option 4:

Hello everyone,

I am pretty good with computers and stuff, but I have been having a problem now for a few months trying to boot up an old 486-DX 100 HMz computer.

It is a hack computer, with rogue parts making it up. It used to work great when I set it up for my little sister to do school work on, but now it is goofed up. Real bad.

Its gutted right now, just a motherboard and power supply, etc. I have 2 seperate Winbond IDE controller cards, one of which I just picked up tonight while getting a brand new Flopp Disk drive. A few of the primary specs of the new controller are:

Winbond IDE/Floppy Controller
Winbond Chip - W3758P

Data Technology Chips
DTC2278VL and DTC-805

The old card is an almost exact duplicate, differing in that it offers two IDE pinouts rather than one

I have been thru the BIOS extensively, and it should realistically be working just fine with the specifics entered. It is an AMIBIOS 1994 model. Specs as follows:

AMI 486 Vesa Green Bios (v. B)

Processor gives a screen output of:
i486 DX 4 - 100 MHZ CPU

Ok, so heres the problem (if you have made it this far, thanks).
I am trying to get this thing up and running again. I know the motherboard is in good shape, and I have a good idea that my IDE cards are as well. When I turn it on, however, the Drive Light stays on, and the cylinder rotates to no end. I have a brand new Dick Drive, and am getting the same problems.

If I switch the input of the Floppy Cable (flip it around) the drive stays idle, as if ... Read more

Answer:Floppy Drive - Light Stays "On", while Cylinder Spins - Can you help?

Alright, Id like to thank absolutely nobody for even looking at my thread! However, as usual, I have used the awesome power of my incredible brain, and found my own answer to my first question.
Now I have a second. I am using an old as f-uck floppy cable. So old that in fact, it has the card slots for 5 and a half inch Drives. The slots are throwing off my BIOS, automatically taking the place of Drive A. In turn, i must assign my Floppy to Drive B.

My BIOS Options do not have the possibility of setting a boot sequence for B, C or B, A, C or anything else. Only A, C or C, A.

I doubt any of you would know, but can I get away with cutting off the old card slots on the cable? Since noone has posted any replies to my last question, and from what I have gathered from scouting old posts, I assume noone knows. Im probably dealing with some amateur-at-best class programmers.

I know someone on here has to be Nerd enough to know. And Nerds not an insult, so dont go gettin all uppity, please. Im plenty freakin Nerd myself!

Hi -
I'm trying to install XP Pro onto a brand new SATA hard drive since my old one seems to have gone kaput after about 5 years.

I booted from CD, and went thru all the screens to the point where it was ready to start the installation. When i got to the screen to partition the "mass storage device", i got the following:

Unknown Disk
(There is no disk in this drive.)
Unknown Disk
(There is no disk in this drive.)

So i found an old post on this site ( and followed the lessons learned there, and realized I had a floppy for a RAID DRIVER i had forgotten about (it came with the components I bought to build this box). So i tried the installation again, starting from a reboot, and hitting F6 at the right time. When it came time to install the 3rd party driver, i inserted the floppy as instructed, and hit Enter. The floppy light came on, but i don't believe i heard it do anything, and the screen asking me to insert the floppy quietly came back.

I tried a couple times, but still the floppy did not do its magic. I continued, and the partition screen still showed the Unknown Disk error. So as suspected, the driver did not get installed. I then rebooted, this time hitting F1 to check out the BIOS. My BIOS recognizes both my new hard drive and the floppy drive just fine, and the floppy itself can be read just fine on another PC.

Could this be a floppy controller problem? is there a simple w... Read more

I apologize if this is on the wrong place in the forum, feel free to move it. Here's my problem.

I am using Windows XP Home. Recently the floppy drive seemed to quit working, but device manager says it IS working.

The problem is whenever I try to use a floppy disk I get an error message saying: "a:\ is not accessible. No ID address mark was found on the floppy disk"

It doesn't matter which floppy disk I try to use...NONE of them will work. It happens even if I put in a blank diskette.

I have not made any changes to my system or done anything else that I can think of to cause this.

I tried unisntalling and reinstalling the floppy drive device driver, which didn't make a difference.

I also tried reformatting a diskette on another XP computer (full format not quick format), then placed a .txt document on the disk. On THAT computer it can see/read the floppy and the text document just fine, but not on MY computer. Whenever I insert the floppy and try to do anything I get the same error message above.

My computer's tech support said there's nothing they can do since the floppy drive IS working.

Can anyone help? Please?

Answer:No "ID Address Mark Found" Floppy drive

The PC can only "see" as far as the interface to tell you the device is working OK.

It cannot tell if the head has died or the drive is out of alignment.

I dunno if I have malware, spyware or virus in my system but I just know there's a bit of a problem. Hi There,
My email contacts from MOST of my emails are sending out "False" emails apparently from me. That are not obviously from me, and as it may say in "Subject Line "Re: My Name" most of my contacts security advises not to open the emails.

G'day all,

I am hoping someone may be able to tell me why my local folders appear under "The Internet" on one of our work computers rather than under "Local Network". We have four machines, 3 running XP Home and one running XP Pro. The front machine has XP Home on it and I cannot open any of the shared folders for this machine on any of the other three machines even though they all have the same workgroup name.

They are all connected via CAT5 cable and we have a Netcomm NB5 ADSL2 modem/router, a Netcomm V300 Telephone Adapter(VOIP)/modem and an 8 port switch in the boss's office. And the front computer's folder/s and drives that I have chosen to be shared are listed under "The Internet". Does anyone know why this is and how I would go about correcting it?

On my wife's computer running Win98SE.

I am trying to update the keys to my Kaspersky Anti Virus program (so I can update from the internet). In order to do this I have to un-install the program then "attach" the new keys. Usually this is not a problem, I have done it before.

However, now when I try to un-install (KAV), as soon as I click to "uninstall" the A: (floppy) runs for a moment and the un-install progress box that popped up goes blank.

Another thing, if i try to simply install the Kaspersky Anti Virus program from my D: or E: drives (CD) the program responds OK for a moment, the floppy "runs" for a moment, then I get a message something to the effect "original source files not available".

I suspect the problem is something I have done, but I don't know where to look.

Appreciate any help, Gold Bear

Answer:Floppy drive "runs" to much?

It clearly thinks that the KAV program was installed from a floppy. Try putting in any old floppy disk and see if that then gives you the choice of pointing to the correct location.

Hello everyone.

I'm new here so I hope I'm doing everything the way it is supposed to be done.
For starters I have first used the "Search" function, however this didn't lead me to a solution of my problem.

Some text appears as Extra Large even though Font size (under Appearance) is set to "Normal".

Please have a look at the screenshot (attached) as it is quite hard to describe whats going on.

Important to note is that the installation of "StyleXP" and the applying of the "Panther" Theme has been done AFTER this problem occurred so I don't think there is a relationship there.

The problem is also not limited to the "Epson Scan" program (seen in the screenshot) I just used it as an example.

It often happens in "Program Menus" and "Dropdown lists", and only within the OS, not inside any browsers (Firefox or IE).

The OS works fine except for this issue.
I'd really appreciate any help regarding this problem.

Maybe there is a way to fix this in the registry?

Kind regards and thanks for reading.

Try reformatting it if possible. Does windows detect it still. Try reinstalling usb drivers to make sure thats correctly functioning. Make sure you have updated drivers for motherboard and os as they could be a strange but possible fix to the problem your having. Let me know if you still have this problem after the above suggestions.

After installing Nvidia drivers, Realtek drivers, and JMicron E-sata drivers, I now have .log text files on the root of my "C" drive. Are these accessed next time I update the driver or can I get rid of them? I can't seem to find anything about these. I know they are there for a reason but I like things to be tidy. Thanks

Hey Nate

They are probably from the current upgrade. You can cinfirm it by opening one of them woth notepad and see if it is giving things like success, fail, etc. Or if it is giving you rev numbers.

To be safe move them to a different folder and reboot. Any grief put them back none and recyle them

Hello All.

Background info:
W2k3 server domain
logon script mapping the "Y" drive to a shared folder on the server
workstation is XP Pro SP3.

I have a user (just one) on a computer (again, just one), where, when she logs in and double clicks on her "Y" drive it opens a new window with her My Documents folder. This is NOT where this drive is supposed to go. If you right-click, the first option is "AutoPlay", second is "OOOO??" and third is "XXXX??"

When she logs on to a different computer her "Y" drive opens correctly. When another user logs on to her computer they "Y" drive maps and opens correctly. She can manually navigate to the correct folder in the Address bar of Explorer.

I googled the topic, and the few replies it returned said that there was an issue with the registry, and to search AutoPlay and delete the keys with "OOOO??" and "XXXX??" as the entries, but there are none.

Antivirus is up to date and a scan was run today. I've deleted the drive and re-mapped it, no change.

I'm out of ideas. Please shoot any you've got this way.

I have a Win95 machine, MSIE 5.5 onboard.

Until a few days ago, when I was on the web and hovered over or selected any link, I would see, for example, "Opening"

Now, I see "Shortcut to index.html at"

Why is this change occurring?

I also think it's defeating my pop-up blocking program (the normal Google Toolbar).

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

I have recently updated to the creator version
My files end up in unintended destinations. When I click in the documents tab in the sidebar of the documents screen, it takes me to a ?Documents? folder that appears in ?One Drive? group. Any files that I send from my desktop end up there
Those files are also shown when I open the first ?Documents? folder that appears in the ?Quick Access? group. I have similar problems with ?Pictures? folders
I have attached screen shots that I hope will explain. I want all my files of any description to end up in the ?Documents? folder contained in the ?This PC? group. Can anyone help please?
Incidentally, I don?t understand the purpose of ?One Drive?, and don?t believe that I will have a use for it. Can I remove/disable it?

I have two partitions on my SATA 320gb hard drive. When I open "My computer" and want to open drive C, I just double click the drive letter and drive opens up, as it suppose to. But when I want to open another partition on the same drive, I double click that drive's letter and get this error massage:
Windows cannot find 'RECYCLER\'. make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
Then in order to open this drive I click drive letter with the right mouse button and click Explore. The drive opens up as it suppose to.
Does anybody know how to fix this problem? Any input will be greatly appreciated

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I find it really annoying that I have to scroll up the left nav bar to quick access when I open a Explorer window. I went to View, Options and set "Open File Explorer to: Quick Access" but it still opens to This PC. Anyone know how to fix that?

Answer:Explorer opening to "This PC" instead of "Quick Access"

Once you find Quick Access not working normally as it should, try to disable and then re-enable it.

Step 1. Launch File Explorer, click on View > Options > Change folder and search options. Now you opened Folder Options.
Step 2. Uncheck the two options "Show recently used files in Quick Access" and "Show frequently used folders in Quick Access" under Privacy. Click "Clear" to clear File Explorer history. Click OK.

I created a table using Excel, and from that table I created a line chart using the Chart Wizard.

After the chart was complete, I then added data using the drawing tools "add text icon."

When I want to included the data table when printing, the text that I added prints fine.

Now here is where the problem occurs. if I just select the chart, the text disappears, and if I do a print preview or print, the text doesn't show up. The text that I added is behind the chart in a cell. I tried to bring it forward but that doesn't work.

What am I doing wrong?

If I create the table in Power Point, and then add the text, everything prints fine. I don't understand why it works in Power Point and not in Excel.

Thank you for your help.

Answer:Excel-Printing Text that was added to a Chart using the Drawing Tools "Text Icon"

When you select a chart in Excel, that becomes the print range. I think you'll be better off copying the chart to it's own worksheet and resizing to desired size...and of course, carry the text box(es) along with it.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

I have an Excel workbook with a column of Active Directory distinguishedName values (looks like CN=John R. Doe,OU=Accounting,OU=Chicago,OU=North America,OU=DALLAS,DC=company,DC=com). In a new column, I want it to search for "OU=DALLAS,DC=company", and if that exists anywhere within the text I want it to return something to indicate it is true (be it a TRUE/FALSE, the value of that cell, or specific text I define such as "it is there!"). The reason is so that I can produce an automated note that identifies something important about the data in this row. The problem is really that Active Directory handles distinguishedName backwards (starts at user and works its way down to root) making it impossible to sort alphabetically in a meaningful way.

Answer:Excel: search cell for text, if exists return value/text "x"

Had to Google around for this one.
where A1 is the column with the text. This will return TRUE or FALSE.

I typicalliy save a file I am working on and then just click the "X" in the upper right hand corner to exit a document. Should I forget to save, I generally receive a prompt asking if I want to save the document before exiting.

A friend insists that the proper procedure to exit a program is to click File then Close to properly close the program. He demonstrated by clicking the "X" to exit the program. When he double clicked the program icon on his desktop, the program opened to the document he was previously working on. (This doesn't happen with all software programs)His argument? "See it isn't really closed, if someone were to hack my computer via a wireless connection, they could see what I am working on so you should always use File, Close." I said "no problem because the wireless connection is encrypted with a password so someone cruisng WiFI's could access the connection anway."

I say the program document is closed when you use the "X" he insists it is still an open document. Anyone care to settle this one?

As this question was never answered I'll post it verbatim with my own comments below,
See original post here;

In all operating systems up to Vista, the flash drive's "active" light turns off when I go through the disconnect procedure; but, in Vista, it doesn't. I have traditionally used this as part of my explanation to others (and a convenience to myself) about when to not to remove the flash drive from its USB port.

This is a problem common to all Vista systems I've seen.

Why does the light not turn off in Vista?

And, is there an easy way to correct this?

Additional information: I have eliminated this problem being hardware-related. I have loaded Vista onto one of my systems here that previously had Windows 2000, then XP on it and it was only with the loading of Vista that the problem developed on this system. Just to be absolutely sure, I did a restore of a previous image of Windows 2000 and the problem went away again. I put Vista back on and the problem came back. So, this is strictly a Vista problem.Click to expand...

I have had the same problem with every Vista system I have used and every flash drive (note this means SSD NAND flash not HDD's or card adapters). AS the last discussion degraded into useless questions about hardware and other OS's let's get a confirmation that someone out there actually has a flash drive that turns its activ... Read more

Answer:Flash drive's "active" light doesn't turn off in Vista when "safely removed"

have done a litte research and testing in my lab on several machines and have confirmd the problem. What it seems to indicate to me is that, in Vista, the light simply indicates power, not data transfer. Whenever I am transferring data, the light blinks.

While I have never actually tested it, I do not belive that the "safely remove" feature actually kills all power to the USB port in XP. If that is the case, then there is really no danger as long as vista has acknowledged the disconnect and knows not to try to write data to the drive.

The hard drive is a Western Digital 320 GB that I've had plugged into this computer before (and worked). Then i got a virus and had to do a recovery of windows.

Ever since then I can't get windows to recognize/show it in my computer. I just "disabled" and "enabled" it in device manager to no effect. I have a C, D, and E drive which are: two partitions on the hard drive, and then the CD drive (respectively).

So i'm stuck, not sure where to proceed since it's obviously not the hard drive itself, I use it on my xbox all the time. What next?

I added a slave drive to my Windows XP Pro computer, and it appears to work properly.

However, when I open the "Documents and Settings" folder (on the slave drive E:\, which is Windows XP Home Edition -- not XP Pro), I do not see any of my documents, sub-folders, etc. There should be MANY sub-folders (inside the "My Documents" folder which isn't even visible), with hundreds of documents, jpgs, etc. within it.

When that drive is installed as the Primary drive in my other computer, the User "Larry" (which is me) has all Administrative privileges. On the computer that I'm running now (with the slave drive in it), I also have Administrator privileges. I own both computers.

My User Name "Larry" is password-protected when I login to Windows (when the drive is Primary and installed into my main computer (not this computer with XP Pro).

I've tried clicking on all the users; Administrator, Default User, Larry, Guest, etc. (Note: I get an "Access Denied" error when clicking on the Guest "Documents and Settings" folder).

So, the questions are:

1. Why can't I see any files or subdirectories in the "Documents and Settings" folder on the slave drive?

2. There's supposed to be a folder named "My Documents," but I can't find it. Normally, that path is "C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents".

I'm running Windows 7 on a DELL XPS. Before this happened a disk scan was running and I reset the computer before it was finished. It restarted the first time, but by the time I got back to the computer it was on the "Strike f1 to retry boot" screen.I've tried turning on CAPS LOCK, NUM LOCK & SCROLL LOCK and hitting ALT - E,F,B, but that did not seem to work. I don't know if I did the combination work or something, but I tried a variety of combos and none of them seemed to work. I also tried reloading the default settings in the Boot options menu and that did not seem to help either. I've read resetting the BIOS is a possible solution, but I'm not sure what the next step is at this point.Any help would be greatly appreciated.* UPDATE: I just ran a diagnostics test and it said Error Code 0141 - No Drive Detected

Answer:Getting "Strike f1 to retry boot" "Error Code 0141 - No Drive Detected"

Its having issues detecting the hard drive. What is the exact make/model number of this computer?Curious as to why you didnt allow it to finish properly? Did it take forever getting hung at a certain point of the scandisk in which you told it to reboot because it was not progressing further? I have a strong feeling you will need to replace the hard drive. The system sensed an issue with the drive before it died and it attempted a scandisk to try to repair, and right now it sounds like the issue with the drive got worse from the point in which the system detected a scandisk was necessary to correct for errors.

I was copying (cut and paste) data from one external hard drive (a 250 GB IDE Maxtor in a Adaptec USB enclosure) to another external (a 400 GB IDE Samsung in a Roswill USB enclosure). During the move. During this move, my Thinkpad T43p encountered a NMI Parity error, to which I'm still unsure what caused it, though I think it may have been my Dock II screwing stuff up. I did memtest 10 times over and my memory passed, so I am assuming its my Dock II. ANYWAYS...

So the NMI Parity error was a blue screen, and I restarted the computer. After the restart I noticed the Maxtor external hard drive was missing from my drive list, and in disk management it show as an uninitialized disk.

Okay, no biggie, I've dealt with this before. I tried using GetDataBack for NTFS, that failed to recover. Also failed were Active Partition recovery, Data Doctor Recovery, File Recovery, Restorer 2000, TestDisk, and ZAR.

I'm guessing my Master File Table is trashed and I can't recover it.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I am going 'round & 'round with this issue. I log on as limited user account for security. However, when I am on that acct, I cannot copy files to the external HP drive - I have to switch over to the admin user account to do so. In order to use the limited account for this operation, I have read that you should disable simple file sharing, (on admin acct), then rt clik on the file u want to copy - this then opens a menu with security tab where you are supposed to be able to give full control to the limited acct for that file. My admin acct that brings up this menu has those boxes to check grayed out. Also, do you have to rt click and give full permission for any file that you want to copy? (once you have this all figured out) - Seems a bit cumbersome. Any ideas anyone?? Thanks.

Ok, so I got my Maxtor 300 Gig SATA Hard Drive and used the XP utility to create it. This is the first time I did that--I was so used to using Fdisk, I always did it that way in the past. Anyway, I'm using it as a data drive and followed the wizard in XP and ended up with a "Dynamic" volume instead of basic. I guess that's the default when you go through the wizard--I just kept clicling the "next" not even really paying attention to the choices as I usually do since I'm impatient!

Anway, I Googled and noted you need this for RAID drives and its not recognized in OS other than 2000 and XP, but is there any advantage to it? I'm not running a RAID configuration and my main OS disc is "basic". Does it matter? I can change it to basic it seems pretty easily according to MS article on it.

I used a DriveWire - Universal Hard Drive Adapter (IDE / PATA / SATA to USB HDD Adapter) to hook up A 3.5" Hard Drive (Samsung model HD502HJ) to my desktop in an attempt to get my wife's files off her old desktop machine and merge them into mine. It all started off fine, the drive was recognized and I could see the files when I plugged in the USB cord. I started a NOD32 scan of the drive and a few minutes later a spark flew off my power strip and the fuse blew - looks like a letter opener shorted between two of the plugs. I think I killed the hard drive.

I replaced the power strip and started everything back up. The drive spins, but no longer is recognized by the computer when plugged in (no drive letter for it). Under Disk Management, I see the disk listed as "unknown" and "not initialized". Originally I had the option to right click and select "Initialize", and I was given option to use two partitiion styles (MBR or GPT).. I plugged in another drive on the hard drive adapter and it works (so it's not the vault of the adapter). I try the same setup on my laptop and get the same results.

If you have killed the drive, there isn't very much you do about it. Even experts cannot sometimes recover anything, and it's just a wast of money.

I have four external drives (FAT32) and opened Partition Magic a couple of days ago. It said one drive was "BAD". MS Disk Administrator says drive is "Healthy".

I am able to access this drive through Windows Explorer and do anything I want with the data. This appears to be a false reading by Partition Magic but I am not completely convinced of this because it has been such a good program for many years.

Do you think I have a failing drive?

Answer:Partition Magic says drive "BAD". Disk Administrator says "Healthy"

I wouldn't trust either program. Find out the manufacturer of the hard drive and download their hard drive diagnostics. The manufacturer's own tests should give you a much better idea if its in good shape or not.

When I boot up my system it will normally scan once and that's it. A couple weeks ago I started getting a system sound when I logged into a game I play Black Desert Online and the sound would repeat itself exactly every 2 minutes. I tried a reboot and it would disappear and come back a couple days later. After Tuesday's patch I can't get it to stop. To find the cause of the system sound I used Process Monitor by Sysinternals and set the filter path to .wav and while in the game when I got the system sound ProcMon advised it was as stated in the thread title and exactly every 2 minutes.

If I disengage the mouse in game I wont get the sound but as soon as I go back to combat mode it starts again. I have another MMO installed Elder Scrolls Online and it doesn't do it in that game. I have rebuilt the version file with no change, I've uninstalled and removed all USB connection, with only a mouse and keyboard connected at this stage. I did change out the mouse and changed USB ports with no success.

Any advice to help me resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

TIA Rocky
PS I did reinstall drivers for video, sound, mouse and keyboard and ran AVG Pro anti virus and Malwarebytes Pro with no threats.

I want to know how to permanently skip "scanning: system error memory dump files" in the disk cleanup scan. What i am looking for, is a way to remove it from the scan entirely.

WinXP has a similar "feature", "compress old files", and the solution i have found is deleting some registry keys.
xp example:
this is what i am looking for.

Answer:How do i skip "scanning: system error memory dump files"?

(plucked from microsoft answers)
1. Open a Command Window in Administrator mode:
* click Start
* click All Programs, then Accessories
* right click on the Command Prompt option,
* on the drop down menu which appears, click on the Run as Administrator option.
* If you haven’t disabled User Account Control (and you shouldn’t!) you will be asked for authorisation. Click the Continue button if you are the administrator or insert the administrator password.
2. Start the System File Checker
* In the Command Prompt window, type: sfc /scannow,
* press Enter.
* You’ll see “the system scan will begin”.
The scan may take some time and windows will repair/replace any corrupt or missing files. You will be asked to insert your Vista DVD if it’s needed.
Close the Command Prompt Window when the job is finished.
One caveat: you need a Windows DVD to enable SFC to make more than minor repairs.

Good Luck

Hi Everyone,
I'm at a loss . . . I have a client who has Windows 98 and Norton's Antivirus 2002. I've uninstalled and reinstalled 3 or 4 times to get the Email Scanning to run, as advised on the symantec website, but it still won't do it.

Any suggestions? There isn't another antivirus program running and the only thing I can think of is that the virus he had, which was cleaned off from an online antivirus site, maybe messed something up. (I reran Nortons after the online scan and downloaded all the updates.)

I'm using Windows 10 on a Lenovo IdeaPad laptop, with Revo Uninstaller installed. I've been using this for a long time and it always hangs for a while on "scanning for leftover files". Tonight I tried using it to uninstall Avira (want to reinstall this, having issues), and it simply hangs on "scanning for leftover files" infinitely. Been waiting for almost an hour and it's still stuck there, roughly 75% of the bar.

Anyone know what might be causing this? Fresh restart + CCleaner didn't help either.

Hey guys

I was playing League of Legends today when my laptop all of a sudden shutted down and rebooten itself. No big deal I was saying to myself, there was no BSOD or anything else to notify except from the suspect "self reboot".

Well now, about 4 hours later I was still playing League of Legends (probably I'm an addict) when all of a sudden the game shutted down. A fake virus scanner started to "scan" files on my laptop saying that every file was infected. When I tried to download AVG Free I couldn't because the virus shuts down everything I open (even My Computer). After closing every single program loaded at that time, the virus rebooted my laptop and there was a BSOD.

Whatever I do to try installing an anti-virus gets blocked by the virus. My laptop reboots time after time. Is there any way to install a virusscanner as I am not really in the mood to lose about 750 gigabytes of data (better backup next time )? I tried installing AVG Free in safe-mode but AVG Free tells me I can't installed the scanner through safe-mode.

Please help me, I'll add to your reputation if you succeed to help :-)

EDIT: remove this post please, I'm just going to format my computer.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Fake anti-virus starts "scanning" but reboots PC

Try to install Malwarebytes AntiMalware free in safe mode with networking,
update it & do a full scan. It should be able to detect & remove the fake AV.

I typically use AVG to scan for viruses and have had a virus for a couple months without being able to get rid of it. The file path is

C:\documents and settings\all users\application data\symantec\norton antivirus corporate edition\7.5\APTemp\AP2.htm

The result message says "Virus found Exploit - infected" but AVG is unable to remove this virus.

I get 1 other result with AVG - C:\\WINDOWS\system32\kernal32.dll - result: Change - Status: Changed

My computer has been running slower and somewhat "choppy" since I got this virus. I also recently had problems booting up.

Here's a summary of the 5 steps when I went through them:

1. Add/remove programs - nothing found that needed to be removed
2. Panda ActiveScan - Report is attached
3. Spyware Blaster - couldn't run this, got an error message stating "Cannot find import; DLL may be missing, corrupt, or wrong version File "MSVBVM60.DLL" error 126. I tried unistalling and re-downloading from a different site, with the same results.

IE-Spyad - downloaded but couldn't install/run - all of the files that I unzipped were text files, nothing to run.

4. I have SP2 - all critical updates have been installed.
5. Deckard's Scan - main text is below, extra.txt is attached.

For AV products you'd be better advised to use the manufacturer's clean-up tool or instructions.
Instructions for manual uninstallation

I've not had an issue like that with Revo. You might want to try their forum.

For the last couple of years I've used Geek uninstaller (free) for routine uninstalls- quite neat and fast as it finds some leftover reg entries. But I wouldn't try it with an AV prog.

I just downloaded the file to create the Avira AntiVir Rescue CD from Avira's website and made a rescue CD with it. I then booted up from that CD and ran a scan. Immediately after running the scan it said, "Finished Scanning" and had no log file. I tried both the "Scan all files" and "Smart scan."

I found out that this is a bug, but have not found a solution.

without a complete reinstall:

Quote from Fred Langa:
"Moving The Operating System To The New Drive
There are several ways to move the operating system to a new drive. But because I'm a fan of drive imaging, my preferred method for setting up the operating system on a new drive is this:

Still running the operating system on the old drive, I enter the Device Manager and uninstall the current entries under "Disk Drives." This in effect makes Windows "forget" what drives it's currently using. I then reboot to my disk imaging tool and create an image of the "no disks configured" version of Windows residing on the old drive. I then restore this image onto what will become the C: partition on the new drive. This whole process is measured in minutes, not hours, and gets a complete clone of the old Windows set up onto the new drive, with all the software and user files intact and ready to pick up from where they left off."

Quoted from Fred Langa

He glosses over this part of the instructions expecting all his readers to understand this
critical piece. I believe that just this one paragraph would qualify as a complete article.

Anyone care to point me to an article that explains these steps?

I'm using Norton Partition Magic 8.0 and Acronis True Image 9

I had to press the reset button, becausr crt+alt+del didn't even work!

It is a win98 OS, and i have all the current upgrades. THe software is nero that came with the drive, and i can't find any drivers that i am missing. I even replaced the IDE cable! I'm not even sure if this is a hardware or software issue....

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Ok, so my English teacher has posed a question to the class concerning his spring cleaning.
He found a box of old 5.25" floppies, one of which contains the only remaining copy of what calls "the best paper he has ever written."

Now, assuming that the disks still work, he was wondering if there is any way to transfer the data to a more reliable medium. I don't believe he has an AppleII at his disposal, but assuming he does he could just copy the data himself word for word.
I don't think that this is what he had in mind, however.

One idea I had involved buying a drive off of eBay and rigging it to work with a newer computer, say- via USB. Google yielded a few results, all of which were disheartening.

An idea I have involves making a disk image, again assuming an AppleII is available, so that it can be read with an emulator. However, I'm not entirely sure how they even make disk images off of those beasts.

The last resort would be paying someone to do it, as I've found a few businesses who will convert these disks to a newer format (for a rather steep fee).

Thanks in advance.

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

Answer:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

Hi, so currently i have a problem, every time i click on a launcher this message appears "The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Planetside 2.lnk' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, and then try again". (please refer to the attachment to see the message for yourself)

Additional information: the harddrive(2TB) that i am using for the computer has been split into two drives. The "C:" drives usually contain necessary programs for a standard computer, and the "D:" drives has all my games (planetside 2 is one of them), work, music and so on. After seeing that message above appear for the first time today, i also realised that my "D:" has also disappear (completelt vanished), so basically every shortcut that is source from that drive is not working. I dont think it is anything to do with the wiring, as the "C:" drive is still there, it is part of the same hard drive.

I have look at other post, saying reinstall the program bla bla bla. But that isn't my main problem at this moment, the major problem is taht i dont have that secondary drive anymore, so even if i can reinstall the program, where will i put it, my major program drive "C:" is almost full, and this drive have other important document in it, so i cant really reinstall that :S.

Hi Guys - new to the forum.

The problem that I have is that all of the sudden, I noticed that when I open "My Computer", no drive letters are listed for my harddrives and DVD drive. Instead...they are listed as "NGS for handwriting Personalization. Please take a look at the provided screenshot. You will know what I am referring to.

When I tried searching this on Google, I've got some hits referencing Personalize Handwriting Recognition, but it referenced Tablet PC's/Laptops. However, my desktop pc is not a tablet!!!

Hi there I have noticed that my drive letters shown in disk management are different from those being shown in "list volume" in the windows recovery console command prompt. Below are some pictures, number one showing my current partition setup with the drive letters and number two-four showing what is shown in "list volume" in the windows recovery console command prompt.

NOTE: If I do a "list volume" in a non recovery console command prompt the drive letters are shown as they are shown in disk management.

Answer:Drive letter in "list volume" WRE is different from "My Computer" Fix?

I believe that is normal since the recovery console assigns letters based on which partition it sees first. It is not aware of the fact that the System Reserved partition doesn't get a drive letter assigned as does Windows.

i want to know how to remove hidden files in thew usb drive or pendrive...

coz when i open the usb drive, it is blank(empty without any file) but when i scane it with my antivirus software, my software identify some files(not infected by virus) that are in the pendrive.....

from here i get to know tht there are some hidden files in my pendrive(usbport) but how to deleted it when it doesnt display when i click the drive...

help me,

Answer:remove hidden files in "USB drive"/ "pendrive"

The files may be tagged as hidden or system files. Assuming you are using some version of MS-Windows on your computer, there are options for Windows Explorer to hide or show certain file types. Setting the options to show all files may cause the files on the drive to appear.

I would use caution when attempting to remove files from the drive. There may be a chance the files are needed for proper operation of the drive.

So after my Period 4 class ended, I headed off to my spare class to work on some assignments on the Mac. My Flash Drive worked perfectly fine in, and before Period 4, then in Period 5 it wasn't working. On the Mac, during my Period 5, it said "Disk not accessible" with three options. I then tried four other computers using Windows 7 and it shown "G is not accessible - The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted."
At home I plugged in the Flash Drive (using Windows 7 HP 64bit) and the same error occurred.
So I tried the following things:
Downloading over (literally) eight useless programs that searched in the Flash Drive, and then asked for money; didn't find any files at all, or said "Disk is not Valid".
Went into cmd and typed chkdsk d: r/.
Renamed the portion letter.
Deleting, then installing the drivers (unplugging then plugging the Flash Drive in).
It seems the drive is corrupt, and I am not sure if it can be fixed at all, even by the world's professionals. Not too sure, but I am hoping this can be fixed, even if I have to send it to a store to use their software to recover my files and get the off that drive asap.
