REGEDIT shutting down and other problems

Question: REGEDIT shutting down and other problems

When I go into REGEDIT, after about 5 seconds, it closes itself. And, just recently my CD-ROM drive has been missing every once in a while. I restart my computer to fix that problem. And... I have SBC Yahoo for internet, and when I check my email and try to delete my mail, It says SBC Yahoo Browser has encountered an error, and then closes the browser, this happens on other sites also. Any help please to fix these solutions?

Preferred Solution: REGEDIT shutting down and other problems

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've been the unfortunate recipient of those nasty adware and spyware bugs...running regedit I've been able to locate all kinds of domain names which I suspect are causing these problems but I can't seem to get rid of them. I attempted to delete the key and all the subkeys for each but unfortunately they have refused to go away.

I need to know if there is a way that I can get rid of these bugs so that my computer and I can resume the work that we have been engaged in without it slowing down and freezing up on me.

I've run just about every adware and spyware software that I can find but still to no avail. I've also installed more than the usual amount of virus programs which seem to miss or overlook what is actually in my computer....is there any hope for me and this problem, if so I would appreciate it if someone could help me...I need HELP PLEASE!!!

Question: regedit problems

Hi,
I am having alot of trouble accessing regedit through run. I can access it fine through c:/windows but not run. Also i am having trouble activating a norton security product as configuration keeps failing. I ran a diskdefragment earlier and it couldn't defragment some of the folders, is this down to the registry files? Please can someone help as this is becoming a problem.
Thanks
Luke

Answer:regedit problems

Does regedit work ok in Safe Mode? Have you tried copying the regedit.exe and then renaming the copy regedit.bat and then trying to run that?

Question: Regedit problems

Hi allI was referred here from the Windows XP forum. I had some problems with spyware and to delete it I tried to use regedit. However, regedit was not working! Regedit was being run by dos for some reason. Leurgy told me to post a hijack this log here: said that regedit wasnt working because some malware had disabled it to preserve itself ( ). I ran Ad Aware SE and Spybot and both of them turned up some 70-odd problems. I deleted, restarted, scanned again (all were gone by this point). Then, 10 minutes later, all of them were back. So, here is my Hijack This log. I greatly appreciate your help! Recently, I tried to download the new version of itunes, but upon installation, I discovered that something had happened to my quick time (sorry if i'm being vague, but this isnt my specific problem) I looked into the problem on apple.com and discovered that lots of people were having this same problem, and soloutions were being posted about it. So, the soloution that seemed to be working for everyone was to run something called 'regedit' but when I try to run it (through the little start menu thing that says 'run' I just type in 'regedit') i get the following error:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\regedit.com
The VTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.

If anyone has seen this before, or knows how to fix it, or even has the slightest idea in the world on how to fix it, I'd really really appreciate it.

Answer:problems launching regedit

It should be regedit.exe not regedit.com. The path of regedit is also incorrect. Regedit should be in C:\Windows and not C:\windows\system32

I'd check your PC thoroughly for virus and spyware as c:\windows\system32\regedit.com is highly suspicious.

For some odd reason I can not get to my regedit. Everytime I try it says "Another program is currently using this file." I tried to go to the task manger to see what it could possibly be and that doesn't even come up when I do ctrl+alt+de. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be cause the problem for the reg edit and if there is an alternate way to get to the task manager besides the task bar

Answer:Regedit and taskmanger problems

probable a virus, if you make a copy of the taskmgr program (%systemroot%\system32\) and call it somethng different i should work.

I am experiencing trouble with my laptop, i cannot log in to the administrators account, the message "User profile service failed. the user profile cannot be loaded". i have found various videos and pages of advice which i have been following. however, i cannot delete the temp profile in Regedit. i have fiddled with the permissions and each time i select "full access" it gets rejected. This then means i cannot go any further with the repair process.

I have the same problem as most people on this board concerning task manager and regedit. These commands would pop-up for a second then disappear. Unfortunately, I am not very good with tech terms however this board seems to be very helpful to newbies and experienced users alike. I have attached my hijackthis log with this post. Please help me fix my problem. Thanks.

Answer:w32.spybot.worm, regedit problems, etc

I don't see the problem files in your Running Processes. Did you delete them in Safe Mode? If so you should get startup error messages that they are missing, because the registry run locations are still present.

And you should be able to run regedit and the others.

If you have not deleted them, start in Safe Mode: press f8 at startup and select Safe Mode from the boot menu.

Navigate to

c:\windows\system32

delete: msconfig32.exe

Look for IExplore.exe in c:\windows\system32 or c:\windows

If found in either of those locations send it to the recycle bin. Do not touch the one in Program Files.

>> Run HijackThis in Safe mode and delete the following entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Winsock2 driver] IEXPLORE.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] MSCONFIG32.EXE

Reboot and post another ScanLog and tell me if you are still experiencing any problems. If there are other User Profiles on the system, post a Scanlog for each.

I have scanned my system for everything with Spybot, Spyware Doctor, Ad Aware, Norton, and just recently HijackThis. I know I have a lot of junk running (it's an old machine and half the things I don't know about). Here is the log file. Help me clean this thing up!

Welcome to TSG, Khet. You have a combination of worm and spy/adware problems. I will give you cleaning instructions that include both.

First have HijackThis handy in its own folder. Also copy these instructions to a Notepad textfile on the desktop as I am going to have you carry them out in Safe Mode:

>>> start in safe mode: press f8 on startup and select Safe Mode from the boot menu.

Check the following entries in HijackThis, and click Fix Checked:

after recently running NAV, it found the w32.spybot.worm in 11 files, and was unable to fix, delete, or access the file. I read up on the virus on Norton's website, and they say to make some changes using regedit. However, regedit won't stay open for more than a second or so (i'm assuming because of the virus).
i've also tried SpybotSD, but no luck. any ideas??

I ran Hijack this and following is the log. Will you please advise what to delete? Thanks in advance for your expertise!!

hi
recently my computer has been having problems with .exe files, dont know how it started maybe a virus or something but AVG identified all .exe extensions for my programmes as threats and another virus scanner found them as "files not found", once this happened to a programme i was unable to access it and a windows restriction message came up. i did a virus scan and removed anything i could then restarted comp (bad idea probs =/) now when i start up my pc explorer doesnt load (even in safe mode) i cant do it via taskmanager->run prog->explorer because it gives a message "windows cannot find,"explorer". make sure you have typed the name correctly and try again". i have read on other threads that a virus could have changed my .exe directory in the registry (or something like that) and give instructions how to giude through regedit and fix it but i cant access regedit through the command prompt or by run->regedt32, if i type in run-> reg edit a box appears for a second then dissapears. ive tries doing this in safe mode too.

any help on fixing this would be appreciated, i am a bit of a noob though if you havnt already gathered ^^ so ya may have to dumb it down a bit lol.
if any more info is needed just ask plz

Answer:problems with regedit, explorer and .exe files!

Sounds like you had/have a virus that corrupted most of your files or hard drive.

You could try performing a Restore and going back to a time before this occurred. If not, boot from your XP CD and perform a repair. If that doesn't work, you will likely need to reinstall XP.

Answer:Search results redirect, regedit, other problems

I just saw that McAfee had not done its weekly scheduled update this morning, the computer was turned off at the time. I checked for updates, and it found a generic downlaoder.dp trojan. I have restarted, and things seem to be back to normal now. I can use regedit, I have run dds.scr, WMP is streaming again, Malwarebytes can update and I can reach previously blocked web sites.

So I am optimistic that it is fixed for now. I have attached the DDS files, in case an expert can check if there's still a problem, but you can close the thread if it doesn't seem necessary to do anything.

Thanks.

Hello everyone:

Does anyone know what could cause the Windows Task Manager to disappear from the screen before you can click anything in it. This happens right after I press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. It is really strange.

The same thing happens when I try to run regedit. I would really like to get this problem fixed...

Answer:Windows Task Manager and Regedit Problems

Hi awlucky3k

Welcome to TSG!

There are several viruses/trojans that will cause that.

Please do this:

First create a permanent folder somewhere like in My Documents and name it Hijack This.

Now Click here to download Hijack This. Download it and click "Save". Save it to the Hijack This folder you just created.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log. Click "Save" to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.

Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hey all,
I think I've been infected with a virus/trogan and now has three problems.

Problem 1
When I open a window that uses Explorer (ie. C:/ or Search) it will stay open for a random period of time, usually 10 secs, then closes without warning. A small window at the top left of the screen pops up as it closes that says:
Personalized Settings
Setting up personalized settings for:
DCOM Service
Problem 2
Regedit will not open, when I type it into the command line it says:
Registry Editing has been disabled by your adminisrator.
However I am the only user on my PC and am an Admin.

Problem 3
Task Manager doesn't even show up when I press CTRL+Shift+Esc or through CTRL+alt+delete.

Outcome
I have found a walkaround for regedit and taskmanager where I run a Visual Basics Script which allows regedit, then enable taskmanager through regedit. However, the problem seems to refresh so I has to run both whenever I want to use them.

Finally, all help is greatly appreciated

So this happened to me before but I fixed it before just by doing this one tiny change. I'll explain that a little later.

So my problem is that every time I upload files, doesn't really matter if it's an image or video, I always get this:

Connection Interrupted

The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again.

Before you answer, let me also add that the file types are supported by the websites (Like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, YouTube and all others out there) I upload on and that I do make sure the file sizes are under max amount file size that could be uploaded for each site.

Now to what I was saying before. When this happened to me last time I looked threw the web for a good month finding solutions. Here are some that didn't work:
1) Yes I have Firefox and going into "about:blank" menu and changing that one thing doesn't work.

2) Creating a Static IP.

3) Firewall Settings.

4) Trying Different Internet Browsers.

5) Stop using my router and used a straight connection to my modem instead.

6) System Restore.

7) And many others, I'm sure you get my point.
Now there was this one solution that I stumbled upon that was different from all the others. It had something to do with the run command "regedit", and no it wasn't the WUAUSERV and BITS thing.

What it was that I had to changed this one value from "0"... Read more

Had a nasty problem yesterday with a virus - symptom was neither task manager, regedit or msconfig would run. They would flash on the screen sometimes and then shut down or just not launch.

Did a virus scan with AVG, Mcafee - showed a clean system - hah...

Read the earlier logs about WINCFG.SCR and BETA.EXE but neither on the system...hmm

Renamed msconfig.exe to configms.exe and it would then run ok.
Also downloaded PRCVIEW.

Found a weird process running VMJOAPQQDFR.exe, killed it and then things were ok, the three tasks would now work. Figured I had the problem licked. Took out the registry keys that were causing this process to launch.

Rebooted...dam...same problem but this time the weird process was SGPMPMKUOX.exe, killed it with PRCVIEW, rebooted and same thing again, but this time weird process is named QHZHRLMNWJ.exe, tried again but this time process was called PZPENENXFR.exe.

Somthing was reinstalling this...finally took out two entires for WIN88.EXE and WEBDAV.EXE from the startup, cleaned out the registry for the weird processes, cleaned out the weird executabes from the Windows\system32 directory and also deleted msconfig35 entries, executables.

Finally was able to get system to reboot without recreating the bad processes.

I do not know what virus is causing this problem with messed up task manager, regedit and msconfig but I do know it is not being found on normal virus scans - really nasty to get rid of.

Any thoughts about what I should have done differ... Read more

I had 3 programs that would not load ( Acrobat reader, real player and quicktime). A tech guy I new suggested deleting all keys in the resigtry and then trying to reload the programs. I did with Acrobat reader and it solved the problem and reader works fine. I tried it with real player and quick time and ALL the registrykeys will delete except those found in
KKEYLOCAL Machine\software\classes\microsoft\windows\ininstall\ then quictime or realplayer etc

a. any idea why they wont delete?
b. any idea how to force then to delete?
c. any other suggestions on getting those programs to work?

the error I get is "error while opening key"

I tried to reinstall windows at www.windowsreinstall.com but my recovery disk says it is outdated so I cannot reinstall or repair my registry unless you know a way to get that done too.

any help..... will be eternally grateful...............

hey guys,

I just suddenly got a lot of viruses or something. I'm not sure where they came from...I was playing an offline game and suddenly started getting a whole lot of Spybot S&D prompts. Shortly afterwards, I began getting popups that would popup every 2 minutes or so; whether I had IE or Firefox open or not. These were the lovely popups with the hyphen in the URL (www.wild-savings.com/muon.html, www.prem-iumcerficate.com/muon.html, www.coup-ons.com/muon.html, www.savi-ngs.com/muon.html, etc). I remember getting this at one point in time before and can't really remember what I did to get rid of it. I still have ewido and others from the last time I got it, so I ran them (ewido, spybot, adaware, ccleaner, smitremfix). Spybot found a lot of stuff as well as adaware. After fixing everything in both programs, running ewido in safe mode and fixing those problems, I still get the popups. SmitRem didn't work either.

So, after all this I start googling my problems. I found a thread on this board that didn't help, and I find a couple sites that talk about opening regedit and/or task manager to fix these problems. Well, I go to run regedit and it won't open and says that it is "being used by another program." Ctrl+alt+del doesn't bring up task manager either. Any time I try to run anything to try to fix this (.reg files that are supposed to fix stuff, etc) it says it is in use by another program. I found Kitty Korner or whatever that has the thing to fix task ma... Read more

Answer:task manager,command prompt & regedit problems

System restore in safe-mode sounds like your best bet.Have you run any anti-virus apps and also spyware apps? I'd try that first. Spybot S&D:click hereAdAware:click hereSuperAntiSpyware:click hereAlso, try running WindowsCare:click here

Hello all,

First off thanks to everyone here for the help they give. I, like a lot of others, have been looking online and couldn't find any site as helpful as this one seems.

I'm running Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3
My problems started March 23 when my antivirus (Avira) quit updating. I didn't think much of it at the time figuring they were having problems on their end
and it would resolve by the next scheduled auto-update. When the update didn't work a second time I figured I might be in trouble.

I started looking around the internet for advice sites and the next thing I noticed was my google searches were redirecting to other sites. I could click on
the back button and the site I wanted originally would show up. After using other sites advice (yahoo answers, ask.com results) I came across your site but
when I tried to bring it up in my browser (I have both IE 7 and Firefox) it would either crash the browser or just not load anything. Along the way the other sites
recommended things to do using regedit and the cmd prompt, but when I would open regedit it would stay open for around 20 to 30 second then close all on
it's own and the cmd prompt would not even open.

I'm now using a clean laptop to view and post on this site and have taken steps from other peoples similar problems I've seen in the forums here. Here are some
of the steps I've done from advice you all have given other peopl... Read more

This is a new computer and when downloading some of the software i've used in the past like gimp, audacity, safari, ventrilo, etc. all of the sudden i was hit with a spyware/malware/virus blast. fake virus alerts, protection software, disability to see the start menu, run command, registry, task manager, c:\, display properties, all programs in start, control panel, etc. I have been reallowing parts of my registry such as task manager and run so that I have disabled some startup items and killed some rogue processes.I'm to the point now where i can scan and fix things but there seems to be no end. Been scanning with AVG and over 60 trojans, 50 from malwarebytes, 20 from spybot, etc. have been removed but on a restart out of safe mode the madness continues and my administration problems come back and such. EDIT: when messing with display properties and some other stuff, i get this error message (since running avg and such) "Cannot find file:///C:/windows/privacy_danger/index.htm'. Make sure the path or internet address is correct." I figure this might help on solving what is affecting my computer. It should be noted that while i'm waiting online i keep getting avg alerts about system32/heur and explorer.exe. I fixed privacy_danger hijackthis. Kapersky identified monder trojan, malwarebytes identified vundo and fakealert, and I've restored most of my functionality, though I know there are still infections. Hello, I've been having problems shutting down my laptop for a few months. Sometimes when I try to shut down my computer, it will log off my desktop and indefinitely produce a Windows 7 background with the words "Logging Off" without completing the shut down, regardless of how long I wait.

Usually when my laptop shuts down successfully, it'll produce this screen with the words "Logging Off", which will then change to "Shutting Down", and then complete a successful shut down.

I'm running a Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit on an Acer Aspire 1420P. I use Comodo Personal Firewall and Avira AntiVir Personal - both the free editions.

Thanks for the help!

Whenever i want to shutdown my windows xp, i go to start and shutdown and then the screen just remains the same with my desktop in the back, icon, wallpaper and all the good stuff - and if i try to open something, a little dialog box appears saying that windows in shutting down

then after about 5 minutes windows actually starts shutting down and switches screen to the saving settings and the powering off or whatever comes next and then it finally shuts off

Does anyone know what the problem could be and how to fix it??

Answer:Problems shutting down

Have you tried going to "msconfig" under the "start-up" tab and removing any programs from running in the background? Your problem may be a program hanging.

Well i am currently using a laptop. It is a Acer aspire 5585WXMI.

Recently i am encountering problems in shutting it down. The screen will show that it is shutting down, but the computer would just not power off. I have to manually press the on/off button to shut it down. I have even waited for one hour for the power to be off, but it just cant power off by itself.

Anyone can help? Thanks.

Answer:Shutting Down Problems

These problems are usually caused by a program not terminating properly - which prevents Vista from closing gracefully. I'd suggest checking your Event Viewer for errors around the time that you try to shut it down. Go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Then click on the Windows logs and look for errors in the System and Application log files.

Another way to troubleshoot this would be to close all open applications before trying to shut down. If it shuts down, then it was one of the open applications that was causing it. If it doesn't shut down, then try closing all the stuff in the System Tray (by the clock) and then try to shut down. If that doesn't work, then go to the Processes Tab in Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and start ending the processes there. After a bunch of attempts you should be able to locate the offending item.

I am not sure if these are in any way related, but they are in the way that they are extremely frustrating!!!

Problem A) When my ethernet cable jiggles loose, and then i stick it back it, sometimes (but not always) my computer with BSOD and restart.

B) If I leave my computer on, overnight or w/e, and do not close the lid or anything (or even if I do) my computer will end up shutting down. Not restarting itself, but completely shutting down. I don't havve my settings set to do this... so its weird.

C) When I am playing Black and White 2, which my computer is 100% compatible with, I do not get very far before the computer just restarts itself. No BSOD, just restarts itself.

Also, sometimes my wireless card is very weird and will not pick up or will drop a connection that it previously had in the exact location. Usually restarting this fixes it, but its still annoying.

Oh and my computer is a Gateway C-140x running Vista Home Premium, 2.0GHZ Santa Rosa, 2 Gigs of Ram, etc.

My laptop will not shut down or restart. It seems to just go into sleep mode and then drains my battery. What can I do?

Answer:Problems with shutting down

You must try to find out why this happen.
I presume some background running process ?blocks? shutdown somehow.

Before you try to switch it off open task manager, check the list of running processes and try to end some of them manually. Maybe you will find out which of them can be responsible for this issue.
Especially check processes that belong to some application you have maybe installed at least.

Ok, here goes...About 2 months ago i bought a brand new dell with xp pro installed. Last weekend it started acting dodgy, most of the time when i turned it on it would go to the welcome screen and just freeze, ctrl alt del wouldnt do anything so i had to turn it off manually. I kept restarting it and after 7 attempts i finally logged in successfully. I then did a system restore to the previous weekend and i thought this sorted the problem out. It did to a degree, it doesnt freeze at the welcome screen anymore. However, i have 2 user accounts on my pc and when i try to log off either of them, nothing happens. I try to shut down and a message pops up saying 'users are still logged in, would u like to log them off?' I click yes and nothing happens, as if the computer just disregards what i just told it do. Its not a major problem, just an annoyance. Whats worse is a cant find my windows xp disc to re install again. Any ideas?Cheers guys

Recently, my laptop hasn't been shutting down properly. Whenever I go to turn it off it doesn't respond, so you have to keep going to start-turn off-turn off over and over again. Either that happens or when I try to turn it off I get the 'End Now' program box coming up with something about ending ccAp, the odd thing is that yesterday it shut down without a problem, which is the first time in a few days that it's done that, and today it's gone funny again! Can anyone help me figure out what is wrong at all? Thank you!

Hi every oneI have a 3 month old Toshiba laptop (came preloaded with Vista home premium ) which for that last couple of weeks has re started automatically every time I shutdown.I have googled this and tried every tip I can find (turning off auto re start etc) but to no avail. The only way to shut it down and for it to stay off is to hold the power button.I think this happened after a windows update

Answer:Shutting down problems

From the start button do you use the "on /off button" or do you use the arrow to the right of it and then choose shut down?Have you recently changed you power saving options?

My start up time is very slow. The internet is slow. I can deal with that but the last two days I can't power off my laptop the normal way. It just hangs there with a black screen but my keyboard and power button stays lit up. I have to hold down the power button to shut it down. I don't show any viruses. Ran various system checks shows nothing. Haven't downloaded any new apps or programs. Can you help?

Hi!
I have this problem since I last installed Windows.
When I shut down the computer it takes it up to 5 minutes to turn off. This happens when I use the special key on the keyboard, because if I try to shut it down from start menu>>turn off the same amount of time is required for the prompt with Shut Down...Restart and Stand By to appear.
This is not to annoying, but it becomes so when I have to reboot after an installation or something.
I managed to take a video recording of the screen and this is what it came out:
at first all goes well...it prompts: "Windows is shutting down..."
and it stays like so for a while and then...very quickly: "Machine group policies finished."
and : "Stopping Windows File Protection..."
finally "Windows is shutting down..." appears again and it shuts down.
What should I do?

I have just built a new PC for myself and I am having problems with shutting it down. Sometimes, not all the time when I am in Windows and I will select turn off or reboot the computer goes through the shutdown sequence. The monitor turns off, but the fans and power light remain on. So to turn it off completely I have to hold down the power button until it stops.
Any thoughts on what is happening?

I have several problems which I'm not sure are linked.

Firstly when I try to shut down the PC - I get error message 'ebaytbdaemon.ex' which I then have to click on before the PC powers down.

Secondly I am unable to click directly on a link within an e-mail (OE) - doing so just produces the egg timer icon - when this happens if I attempt to close OE, again the screen 'hangs' with an error message. I was advised to delete cookies as a way around this but to no avail.

I realise that pasting the link into the main browser window is an option (probably safer!) although sometimes this is not always possible - but I am curious as to why the problem has developed in the first place.

Finally I have noticed several messages stating that my PC is low on virtual memory. This coincides with any application - even opening a word document - running painfully slow. On one occasion tonight I was advised that my system did not have enough memory to open Word Help!

I have run AVG/Ad-aware but no help. Also I notice that the problem with virtual memory appears to come and go ie everything runs fine - then slows - then is fine again.

I would say that I have run a defrag analysis which suggests this is necessary so presumably this is not helping matters. I aim to do this as soon as I finish posting this!

Any advice to any of the above ramblings would - as ever - be much appreciated.

Have you ran a memory scan? Could be a bad memory chip. Had a bad one a while back, and it would restart the system as the chips became fragmented and full of crap no longer running. Info would try to run off the bad portion of the memory, and my pc would restart right there, no warning. check that first.

I use the same BIOS and mine works fine. It might possibly be in Power options in the BIOS but I wouldn't count on it. You could give it a shot though.

I've got a computer with Windows XP on it. About two weeks ago it developed two problems:

1. I have to request it to shut down twice. The first time I make the request nothing happens. The second time it closes down properly.
2. When I start it up I get the message "We apologize for the inconvenience but Windows did not start successfully". I have to catch this message before it tries starting up on the new configuration again and select for it to start using the last known good configuration. Then it starts OK. But it's a bit of a hassle.

I didn't make any changes to my computer on the day I first started noticing these problems. I've tried restoring my system to points before the problems started (takes up to three hours to do), running Malwarebytes (it flagged up eight files which I then removed) and chkdisk (seems to get to the end of the scan then restart the computer and do another scan indefinitely) but there's no improvement.

So here's a hijackthis log below. Can anyone help?

Answer:a few problems while starting and shutting down

Just a though. Use msconfig and see what you have running under start up. You might have something starting there for shutting down that is causing this problem. If you have downloaded anything new it might installed itself in your start up and causing start up and shut down problems. Another option would be chkdsk /r. Check M/S site for proper use of chkdsk /r. (notice the space between k and the /).

Hi guys, I have a 4 year old computer with the following specs:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-81848PM
Intel Chip: FW8280IEB L4210329 SL 73Z
Graphics Card: Nvidia FX5500
RAM: 512mb
CPU: Pentium 4 - 3.2ghz

This is all the info I have on spec! Hope it's enough.

Problems started around 2 years ago when I started getting messages regarding Display Driver problems from windows. The computer would randomly shut down or monitor would turn off and would have problems getting anything back up. Eventually I couldn't get my monitor working at all so changed the monitor. I had updated the Display Drivers but this seemed to cause more problems with the original monitor.

This didn't occur too often so we have lived with it since. Now the monitor often says "no Signal Input" when we turn the computer on, and sometimes we have to turn the computer on and off loads of times until windows loads on the monitor.

When attempting to run a game, it will usually shut down straight away, or 5mins into game. My partner is attempting to install Football Manager 2009 and it now shuts down as soon as he attempts to install it.

I used to play World of Warcraft on the computer and it ran fine (around a year ago) I have attempted to play this again on there around 2/3 months ago and it lags far too much to play.

I have also tried running the Sims 2 which makes comp shut down after 5/10mins. These games have all been run on the computer previously (In the last 2 years) and have run ... Read more

Hello everyone

I've recently been having some problems with the general use of Windows XP. I have a very large number of processes running at all times, I'm not sure what these are and if and how I can stop them running on start up. I'm also having problems with various programs freezing and not working properly. I have also been having problems restarting and shutting down Windows, this is taking a very long time and sometimes will not shut down at all. My hard drive was very full and I've deleted a large number of files and defragged the hard drive but this has not helped. I have also run AdAware and Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Any help in solving any of these problems would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much in advance for any assistance.

I noticed that whenever I try to work with a DVD that is scratched, that the CPU usgae spikes. Process Explorer indicates DPCs accounting for >60% of CPU usage, and I have to assume that this is related to the problems with the DVD drive not being able to read from my DVD.

However, I cannot get the CPU usage to go down, even after removing the DVD and closing any software that I was using with the DVD. Does anyone have any suggestions how to stop the DPCs and Hardware Interrupts and bring the CPU usage down?

Also, if I try to reboot after I am in this situation (a necessity so that the computer can run smoothly with low usage), the shut down freezes and I have to do a hard power down at the PSU. I am assuming that the DPCs and Hardware Interrupts have something to with that.

Answer:DPCs and Problems Shutting Down

Ya, I notice similar problems when trying to read a defective disc.

Only solution = power down, power back up.

You could try using this - http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2623.html

Or you could sand the bottom of the disc with white toothpaste and your thumb, going from center to outer edge. If you remove enough of the damage this way, this disc could then be read well. Make an .iso of it if possible, then throw out the original

Answer:problems shutting down computer

Try scheduling a task in the task scheduler that will shutdown the computer.

Using this: as your taks:

c:\Windows\system32\shutdown.exe -r -t 00

See if that will shut it down. That will narrow down the problems.

Ive been running this operating system for about a year now with no problems. In the last few days however, whenever I shut down the system, everything goes fine until it exits the desktop and goes to the blue background. When it reaches the "Windows is shutting down..." screen, it just hangs. Its not locked up as I can still move the mouse and the dialog box, it just will not shut down.

Any ideas on how to remedy this issue?
EDIT: Add/Remove Programs just hangs at this as well

Answer:problems with Windows XP x64 shutting down

See if it hangs when shutting down and running add/remove programs in Safe Mode as well, if Safe Mode shut down and add/remove programs functions properly, then it is probably some program you installed and you can try disabling/uninstalling them one by one. Or it could be a driver that needs to be updated or perhaps even a piece of hardware going bad. Could be difficult to diagnose, so be prepaired to do some work.

When I try to shut down, the computer just spins for ages and eventually goes blank. Then, I have to select "start in safe mode" and shut down from there.

Has anybody else experienced this problem? Any advice on how I can fix this issue would be most welcome.

Two things, do you have anything plugged into your USB drives when you try to shut down?

Also, the very first thing you want to do is open up the Run Command as Administrator and type in SFC/ scannow This will repair your Windows Update and hopefully whatever else is holding up your PC from turning off. SFC is the System File Checker.

I have great difficulties shutting my laptop down with Windows 7. It just sits on the "windows is shutting down" page for all eternity and eventually I just have to manually turn off the computer.

If anyone has any advice, please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Problems shutting down computer

Welcome!

Advice? Definitely. It sounds like a program you are running is causing the hang.

My first suspicion is the anti-virus. Try disabling/uninstalling it for the time being.

Here's another thing you can try. In Task Manager (Ctrl-Shift-Esc), in the Processes tab, End half of the processes. Make a list of which ones you ended.

If it still hangs, you can suspect that the rogue process is in the other half. If it works, you can start trying to narrow down exactly which process is causing the trouble.

Let us know how it turns out!

~JK

Edit: One more question I should ask. After you reboot, if you immediately restart again, does it still hang?

I am having problems with shutting down my PC and saving with notepad.

Whenever I come to closing down my PC, when going to start -> shut down etc. the shut down dialog box doesnt appear and the computer freezes when the pc has been switched on for a long time. so the only way i can switch off my pc is by using the actual power button, something which i dont like doing. however if my pc has been on for a short period of time, say 15/20 mins it will appear.

Notepad - when I use notepad and want to save what i have written, i go to file -> save as then notepad just freezes and the only way I can close it is by using task manager. in other words i cant save any notepad files i create.

any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

I cannot find a way of working round this. Any ideas out there?????? Thanks.
