No programs listed in Add/Remove Programs Window

Question: No programs listed in Add/Remove Programs Window

When I go to the Change or Remove Programs Button of the Add-Remove Programs window in the Control Panel, there are no programs listed at all. The window is totally blank. The list for the Currently Installed Programs is completely empty. Does anyone know how I can get my installed programs displayed so that I can delete a couple? Any reason why this would happen?

I have Windows XP.

Thanks for your help!

Preferred Solution: No programs listed in Add/Remove Programs Window

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I reinstalled Windows XP. For some reason, all of my old programs show up in Windows Explorer, but not in the Start Menu or in Control Panel/Add Remove Programs. Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Programs Not Listed in Start Menu Or Add/Remove Programs

I would guess that you need to re-install all of them for them to do that, its just a guess, try it with one and see if it works .....

Answer:Programs Not Listed in Start Menu Or Add/Remove Programs

Hey, i assume when you re-installed XP you attempted to keep your programs?

When re-installing XP i believe the registry is re-written, which would account for them being missing from the Add/Remove programs panel.

As for the start menu, star menu entries can be found in these two directories:

C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Start Menu
C:/Documents and Settings/[Your Username]/Start Menu
i'm assuming they've been re-written too, if the programs still run then all you need to do is drag a shortcut to the main EXE into one of them folders, if they don't i suggest you re-install them.

Could you clarify how you re-installed XP? did you choose some non-destructive re-install(in order to keep your programs)?

Hello you really nice people. Since you have helped me on several occasions, I thought I'd try one more time.

I don't know exactly when it happened; however, at some point after I installed winXP as a dual boot and have been trying out some dvd burning software, I cannot add/remove programs in win2000... it states that "no programs are currently installed on this computer."

I have tried spybot (which found a few things and have been repaired)... I have tried Norton PC Doctor (which found a few things, all of which could not necessarily be repaired) and as a last resort I downloaded a freeware program Add/Remove Programs to get my program uninstalled.

In the midst of all this, I foolishly installed service pack 4 and then had to promptly uninstall it (I think it was a conflict with my video capture card -- got the blue screen of death at reboot [even in safe mode!!]). I was able to uninstall that because I had the good sense to back up and let it give me the uninstall option.

Any other ideas ??? I am going blind trying to follow the msn knowledge base suggestions checking the registry...

I don't know what information you need from me to try and help me out, so if you need any logs or stuff that I see other people post, please let me know how to capture that information for you as well... I'm pretty computer smart, just not really troubleshooting experienced... in other words, I just build em and learn as I go along.

I'm bumping this up... I still have found no solutions... I've run Norton PC Doctor and WinDoctor... spybot... housecalls... I've reinstalled 2000 to repair and still no luck....

Someone out there has to know how to resolve this stupid error. I just know it's something simple that I don't know about... or as I always say... it's just something stupid... it almost always is.

Help please???????????

I have backed up a friends data and used the dreaded red floppy to restore to factory settings. The Packard Bell software appeared to do this successfully and I then set about trying to remove various programs from add/remove. Virtually nothing was listed! For example Adobe Reader 5 is installed and working on the computer but doesn`t appear nor is it listed in All Programs. As basically all the preinstalled software. (Power DVD is listed in All Programmes but again not in Add/Remove)I`ve googled but can`t seem to find a clue - it sounds like a registry problem. Anyone experienced this before?

Answer:Add/Remove Programs Not Listed

The Add & Remove data is located in the registry & as you have reverted back to factory setting the registry no longer contains information regarding the programs that were installed after factory default. You could try re-installing the programs you want to remove & hopefully you should then be able to remove them.

I downloaded and ran HighjackThis once and noticed that it is now listed in my Add/Remove Programs List. Why is this? I thought it didn't actually install anything on your computer?

(I originally had it in a folder on my desktop, I think that's where it was when I ran it, then I moved it to the Programs Folder on C:, then I moved it back to my desktop. Not that any of that would matter...)

On a side note, I also ran that Startup program, and that didn't add anything to my Add/Remove Programs List...

Any help is appreciated -- thanks!

Answer:Why Is Hijackthis Listed In My Add/remove Programs?

Not sure what your problem is though..
Hijackthis is listed in your add/remove programs because when you start Hijackthis the first time, it looks where Hijackthis is located and puts an entry in the Uninstall entry in your Registry.

Hijackthis does indeed add some registry entries when you run it, so using add/remove deletes the entries from the registry.

The startup program doesn't add anything to the registry as far as I know.

Answer:There are only a few programs listed in add/remove prog

Also make sure you are logged in as administrator. If you use (preferred) normal user for daily use and many of the programs were installed as administrator or before you started using a limited user account, they may not show up unless you are logged in as administrator. Also when you look for restore options, not that you should have a 'button' to "Show More Restore Points". If you do, then you will be able to see all of your restore points.By default your system should reserve 12% of your disk space for your restore points. Less than 8% (unless you have a very large disk) is not generally recommended. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I went to uninstall some junk programs from my computer, and NONE of the programs in the Add/Remove Programs window have the Remove button. Is there any way to fix this or reverse it? confused

Answer:Unable to remove ANY programs thru the Add/Remove Programs window!

Try this:

Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT. This starts the Registry Editor. Navigate to:

\<Program Name>

Click on the + next to the Uninstall key to reveal the subkeys.

You will notice sub keys with a series of numbers. Click on each of these number series one at a time and look in the right pane for "Display Name", this is the name reflected in Add/Remove Programs.

In the right-pane, do the following:

Look for the REG_DWORD(s) "NoRemove" and "NoModify"

Double-click NoRemove (REG_DWORD) and set it to 0
Double-click NoModify (REG_DWORD) and set it to 0

If NoRemove is set to 1, the Remove button will be unavailable
If NoModify is set to 1, the Change button will be unavailable

A friend is having problems with IE 5 and I directed her to Add/Remove Programs so she could repair it. However, IE is not listed in the list of programs. I got her to do a search to try and locate it and it is in C:\Windows.

Is this unusual? Mine is located in Program Files and of course is listed in the Add/Remove Programs list.

I am going to uninstall it for her and install IE5.5 from a CD but I was wondering why her original version is not listed in Add/Remove programs.

well as the title says, im cleaning up a friends computer and he's got TONS of games and programs he doesnt use anymore, but, the thing is, they're not listed in the start-programs or the add/remove program in control panel.
But when i check the c:\program files drive...whoaaa...tons of folders...what's the best way to remove these programs? just delete the folders and hunt them down in regedit? thanks in advance guys....

Answer:removing programs not listed in add/remove -control panel

well when i delete games in add/remove program it almost always leaves folders half-empty so it would be better if you removed them manually including the desktop chortcuts.

the add/remove program is for people who don't understand windows.

I found Snap Do on my computer last night. I've read many "fixes" for it and they all say to start by uninstalling the program. It isn't listed in my Control Panel / Add Remove Programs.
I downloaded SypwareHunter as it seemed to imply that it would find the program. After installing, scanning, rebooting (all that was required), there's still no sign of it--instead it brings me to a page where they want $29.99 to fix it. I don't know about anyone else, but when a program says free and has you do all that work and then hit you up for $, I get angry and refuse to purchase their product. Same thing happened with SparkTrust.
Has anyone else run into this problem--it not showing up in the add/remove programs? I know it's on the computer as the homepage was hi-jacked and Spyware Hunter showed 28 threats all to do with this program.
Another question--there's hardly nothing on this computer--do you think a reformat will take care of this? At first, the hi-jacking didn't bother me, but the more I read, the more malicious I find this to be and I want to get rid of it. I've also heard some proggies U pay for don't work.
Any help would be appreciated...Sue

It began when I was browsing and out-of-the-blue a popup saying "HDD Failure - etc. etc. We recommend you restart your machine" came up, it looked legit so I checked out my PC to see some desktop items (not all) had dissappeared. Naturally I restarted machine and went on my normal user;

- my desktop was completely black and their were no icons, their were only a few programs listed in all programs aswell.

- A program called "Windows XP Fix" was running, it was obviously false software, I managed to delete its root (i think) from All Users / Application Data / 01032483.exe (or something)

- A program called browser+ was in my All Programs which it let me uninstall.

- If i go to a different user there's desktop icons and i can use my browser (still limited All Programs though) but if i click on a link it sends me to different web pages like or (lol?) it's really messed :/)

Stuff is attached I appreciate your help <3

I'm running Windows 7 and a few months back had to remove and some other unwanted programs.  I managed to get them off, I beleive.  I'm not sure, but I beleive I had to delete some folders to get them off fully. Subsequent Superantispyware runs did not report any unwanted programs.
This morning Avast alerted me was back.  I opened a browser and confirmed the home page was hijacked.  Avast said it could remove it for me and when I looked, the home page was back and wasn't on my list of programs in control panel>prorams and features.
I ran malware bytes and nothing too bad was found.  I ran Superantispyware and it reported regcleaner pro, Advanced Sysrem Protector and AppsHat Mobile Apps were installed.  I let the Super antispyware try to remove them and also cleaned out some tracking cookies.  I cehcked programs and the 3 weren't there.  Re-running Super antispyware however keeps reporting they're in my system.
Any ideas?  Was my original removal not successful?  Can these apps hide?

Some (3, out of maybe 20) of my installed Programs, all working perfectly well, are not listed in Control Panel -> Programs and Features.

Any ideas on how to rectify this, please?

Thank you.

Answer:Some installed Programs not listed in Programs and Features...

Some programs do not really "Install" by using normal installation process by writing entries in the Registry and so don't show up as uninstallable. "Portable programs" are an example. If they don't have Uninstall.exe (or similar file) in it's folder, you can just delete folder and shortcut.

I use XP Home, and the above window shows the "last used on" occasion for most of my programs as months, sometimes years, out of date. A program which I use regularly will show eg "last used on 23/01 2004" when if fact it was used last week, and will indicate "used - rarely" when actually I use it every day. Any ideas why this should be?

Hi all--First time posting here. Been running Win ME for several years with very few problems until now. Recently downloaded the latest version of McAfee antivirus and been having problems ever since. Get many errors on boot-up and BSOD several times. After several reboots I am able to work thru it. Boots into safe mode with no issues. Tried a system restore to a date prior to install but it will not automatically reboot and it fails. Was advised to uninstall McAfee and see if the problem clears but my add/remove programs window is now blank. This is a new one for me. Any ideas?

Has anyone had this problem before?
Or does anyone have any idea how I can fix this?

Hi, I have an ACER Travelmate 4000 laptop with Win XP Pro. I went to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs to check what was slowing the laptop so much and remove it. However the screen is empty. The "Wait while this is populated" comes on and the torch-light does not. The mouse shows no animation. Waited for ever. Then restored system to 10 days back in small steps (1 day, 2 days etc). No change. All other programs seem to be running ok. But I am very uncomfortable, that something is going to stop working.... Help me Please..

I've had this for a while, and it's not a problem, but it's annoying as heck. There's a HUGE gap in the programs list in my Add or Remove Programs window. After the Apple Software Update there are several hundred blank lines and then the list continues with Avanquest update.

See the attached screenshots. Notice the size of the scrollbar on the right-hand side. It may help you understand the size of the gap I'm talking about.

Any ideas?

Answer:Add/Remove Programs window will not open anymore

Hi again -

When I try and open the add/remove programs button from the control panel, it does not open.

Do you receive any error messages, does it not open at all, or does it just not populate?
Download RSIT by random/random and save it to your desktop.
Double click RSIT.exe to start the tool and click Continue at the disclaimer.
When the scan completes it will open a log named log.txt maximized, and a log named info.txt minimized.
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt here.
Please attach info.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simplyClick the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:C:\rsit\info.txt

Click Upload.

A friends computer is displaying all programs up to the letter D fine, in Add Remove Programs, in the control panel. Then it is just a white blank from then on. I can scroll down the page where the rest of the programs should be displayed but there is nothing there.I installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 and now the blank part of the window displays in black. So, top half of window is fine, showing installed programs in alphabetical order up to the letter 'D' the rest is just blank. Can anyone throw any light on this problem as I'm not albe to uninstall any programs that start with the letter E to Z!I've run anti-virus and Spyware programs but the problems still exists.

Answer:'Add Remove Programs' window is half blank

Repair XP by replacing corrupt filesTypesfc /scannowin the run box, press enter and let system file checker find and replace missing / corrupt file in windows and explorer. This will take awhile to complete and you may be asked for the CD to be in the drive if windows is not preinstalled on the hard drive. sfc /scannow problemsclick here

An intreging question here, at least for me. In trying to keep my computer in good running shape I go through everything I got, anti spy programs from a numnber of sources, Window's maintanence programs and a whole buch of other concoctions for just such a job. But one thing that I wasn't looking for was in also updating to keep the computer running in tip top shap I've noticed that, it seems to be anyway, that some of the programs just keep adding on the megga bites to the updating programs without ever adjusting for intigration of the updates. I mean I'm finding that when I go to the Window's Add & Remove Program I have been finding the listings of programs with many more magga bite size readings than what I think should be there. One in particular is trobbling. Customizable Alerts is registering 4 Gigga Bites for the program on Windows Add & Remove. Is this right? What program is 4 Gigga Bites in size? None! So what gives, what don't I know about Customizable ALerts that it would have 4 Gigga Bites size here?
My first reaction is to Remove it right away. Only I thought that it might be prudent to inquire here first just incase I don't know something that I should on this. Anyone knowledgable on this point please let me know asap what the best course of action on this might be. I'd greatly appreciate that. Thank you.

From time to time, some (few) external programs (which are not part of Window) disappear from the list of the programs and functionalities in the Add/Remove window in the Configuration panel. They were visible in this window immediately after their installation, but disappeared sometime later. I didn't find any adequate help in the various forums and support sites I visited. KB266668 for instance concerns (if I understand well) a general failure in the Add/Remove window and not a specific missing program in the list. I haven't tried Fix-It.

I am therefore unable to uninstall these pieces of software, as I currently need to move one of these programs from one hard disk to another.

The concerned PC has an i7 4771 CPU, 16 MBytes memory and runs Windows 7 Professional 64 bits, Norton Internet Security and also PC Tune-up (which has been acquired recently by AVG).

I would be interested in understanding the origin of this strange behaviour and finding a way to restore the missing lines in the Add/Remove window.

Thank you for your ideas and help,

Hi Guys!

Hope somebody can help me out.

When opening the appwiz.cpl panel being the Add / Remove Programs list a huge black & coloured striped blank exists between the entries of 2 programs.
Programs from A to FF list ok, then the black / brown colored blank starts till way down the list goes on from Filezilla to Z....

I've tried out MS KB 266668 which explains how to reregister all kinds of registry keys and dll's. Also tried out an article about the 'DisplayIcon' carrying a '-1' negative value somewhere in the registry entries.
Nothing works.

When sorting the programs on 'Date', 'Name', etc the blanc positions itself between different entries. The elevator slider at the right of the window each time gives the same minuscule 'elevator'slider'. It looks as if it is related to the positioning in the Add / Remove Window itself.

Of course it's more or less an 'esthetic aspect' as all the entries are there alright but still; would like to get it fixed somehow.

My system?

x86 intel pentium iv
RAID 0 Intel ICH5
320GB hardrive / volume (2x 160GB)
WinXP Pro SP2 with all MS updates
KIS 6.0.300 protection.

Would love to get hints or tips.

Try using Stertup Inspector to remove all aps but those necessary from starting when Windows starts. It makes the ap easier to identify than does msconfig and does not change the manor of startup if you aren't careful as msconfig does.Startup Inspector (manages startup menu ? helps you identify aps in the startup menu so you can disable unnecessary programs from running in the background when they are not needed)And Startup Monitor (a small freeware ap available on the same page to notify you and require your permission for any program to add itself to your startup menu)

I just rebuilt this computer and it working basically ok now. heres the issue im having, when I go to add remove programs it only shows the stuff ive installed since the reload, not all the programs that were installed on the system previously. I think the registry is not right, is there any way the restore it or have windows rebuild it? or will all the programs need to be reinstalled, most of them still work, but some do not.

Answer:rebuilt system from backup, but programs dont show in add/remove programs

I dont know what sort of backup you did. When you reinstall the o/s
its like starting over. Your right about registry issues. Thing is, is that
when you install a program it inserts a special registry entry. When you
reinstall windows, it has no clue as to how to deal with that particular
entry, thus you need to reinstall. For games and other programs, if
you have saved folders, they might be salvaged. Smarter minds may
differ, maybe they will chime in....

Where is Vista 64's add/remove programs icon? Stopping startup programs

I've got a few useless start up programs that I have no use for and I want to prevent them from starting up. Some annoying EA download manager, Adobe, etc. I want them to stop checking for updates every time I boot up or kick me out to windows in the middle of a game.

I looked in control panel but I do not see the icon for add/remove programs or anything where I can run msconfig like in XP. How can I remove or shut them down in Vista 64? Thanx

Answer:Where is Vista 64's add/remove programs icon? Stopping startup programs

To remove them, it's now under Control Panel -> Programs and Features. That one threw me for a small loop when I first installed Vista and couldn't find it.

I was having major problems with XP so i decided to do a dirty install. So I reinstalled, keeping all of the other data on my hdd. But when I got windows back up and running, I still had all the programs in the Program Files Folder, and they could run, but all the shortcuts on the desktop, the start menu, and the add/remove programs are gone.

I understand why this happened, but I haden't even thought about it before reinstalling.

I checked around and even resorted to Microsoft's site and their resolution was: Revert to backup of shortcuts....lmao

Well, all help is appreciated and thanks in advance,

When I download a program & install it, sometimes it will show up in the Add/Remove Programs list, sometimes it won't. Why is that? And how do I remove a program that doesn't show up in the list? Thanks.

Answer:Why Don't All Installed Programs Show Up In Add/Remove Programs List?

Depends how the application was written and what installer the author used.

If it does not show up in Add/Remove programs, it should have an "uninstall" file in the program's directory which would achieve the same thing.

I've just upgraded an old Win ME system with a PIII 800 MHz processor, 128 M Ram to XP Home. After doing so, I noticed that many of the programs that were on the Add/Remove Programs List are no longer there. I also notice that I can't install or uninstall ZoneAlarm Free because TrueVector is said to be running.

I don't understand why TrueVector would be running if ZoneAlarm is 'not installed'. If I end the task and try to install or uninstall ZA, I'm still not successful.

When booting the system, there appears to be a lot of disk activity - like if there is a virus scan taking place at boot up. Norton System Works was installed previously, but I don't see it in the Add/Remove Programs list or the Start Programs List.

I've done the Malware Scans, as documented in the Malware Forums, and run HJT which currently shows no signs of malware. So I'm wondering if there are some known issues with upgrading from ME to XP Home that would cause this kind of strange behavior.

Can you offer any other suggestions to try to resolve this issue? The virtual memory is reported to be too low. It's set at 384 M.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer:Missing Programs in Add/Remove Programs After XP Home Upgrade

To change the virtual memory (paging file size)

-control panel
-Performance - settings
-Virtual memory - change
-custom size

I would just set the initial and the maximum to the recommended size
listed near the bottom of the box (mine is 1150)
depends on how large your hard drive is as to how much you want to hand over

64MB of RAM is the bare minimum needed to run windows XP
128MB of RAM is the minimum recommended by windows XP
256MB of RAM or more will make a huge difference

I dont really see what this would have to do with your programs acting up though
Your best bet would be to back up all of your data, settings etc
and reformat your hard drive to achieve a clean instal of Windows XP

Hi all,
I have a somewhat interesting problem here. I have a computer that was infected. I ran Ccleaner, Malwarebytes, Avira Anti-virus, and Spybot search and destroy. It appears to have cleaned out all of the bugs but now I can't see any of the original programs on the desktop or in the start menu. However when I open control panel I can see all of the programs listed there. Also, when I go into the the program files folder itself there are no programs listed. Additionally, when I went to boot into safe mode I now get the error: The File viaide.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue.

Any thoughts on how I might be able to restore the desktop and file folders to reflect what is shown in add/remove programs without doing an OS reinstall?

Well, that's new - the normal request is 'how do I add things to the Start?'

No, not in the registry. There are actually two folders that are combined to make that list: one for All Users and a personal one for each user. You can customise both. This Tutorial tells you how.

I have two two programs on my Add/Remove programs list that I've already uninstalled. The Sims: Livin' Large, and Macromedia Freehand 10. The Sims is over 600MB, and Freehand doesn't show a size next to the program name. I've already uninstalled them both via Add/Remove programs, and I've deleted both the folders from the Program Files folder, but they don't leave the Add/Remove programs list. I click to uninstall the Sims again, and nothing happens. I try to uninstall Freehand and it says:

An installation support file could not be installed. The system cannot find the specified file.

Could anybody help me get these things off my programs list? And another small side question: I rolled back to Windows Media Player 10 months ago, but Windows Media Player 11 Format runtime is still present on my list. Is it safe to uninstall? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Hi,,,,, My computer got infected with virus's and malware related stuff. And maybe in the process of removing the infections i have been left with 3 problems. A lot of programs are missing from add remove programs list
The remove TAB in the add remove list is'nt there any more
When i restart my computer or turn it on my screen resolution changes
I have looked here > But that doest sort the remove TAB out for me it is still missing. Also when i went the to set NoRemove (REG_DWORD) set it to 0 and NoModify (REG_DWORD) set it to 0 I thought i may see all the programs installed on my computer there but they weren't
I was having help and was asked to follow this:
Click Start>Run and type in sfc /scannow (there is a space between sfc and /) and let it scan for missing/corrupt files. This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. If it finds any problems, it will prompt you for the Windows XP Install disc so have it handy.
After doing so every time i restart my PC on turn it on my screen resolution changes and i have to change it back to how i like it.

I inherited a computer and upgraded it from 98 to XP. It had been set up with fat files (don't ask, somebody must have thought it was a good idea at the time) and hence multiple logical drives. Using partition manager, I got the files upgraded to ntsd (i'm dyslexic and didn't go back to check the initials) and am in the process of consolidating more logical drives. My problem now is that the add/remove programs list only shows the programs on c: drive. I want to uninstall some things so I can re-install them on the new consolidated c: drive. Any ideas on how I can get add/remove programs to list my other programs? Thanks for any help.

Answer:add/remove programs only displays programs on c drive

This might sound like trouble, but I think you would be much better to just format and start over with a fresh install of XP. That way you know you got it right, and I've seen problems with upgrading from something to XP. Just a thought, especially if you are going to be uninstalling programs and reinstalling them. Just start over and install them

My problem all started about two or three weeks ago when Windows Security Center popped up saying that my computer was infected with various viruses. So when it prompted me to remove the infected files, it requested a password of some sort that I didn't have, so i just ignored Security Center when it came up. Then my computer wouldn't let me open Mozilla Firefox. I had to use Internet Explorer and then somehow I hit a button that would search for something using my default internet, meaning Firefox. So I found a way to get around the block Security Center was making. But whenever I would try to do anything some window would pop up from Security Center saying I was infected and it would ask me if I wanted to block whatever file it was. I decided to just ignore Security Center whenever it came up. Then, I'm not sure when it happened, but a window would pop up when i turned on my computer and it says "rundll32.exe Application not found." So now when I try to open up something I have to search through my program files to find something that will be able to open whatever it is that I need. I have been able to open up Firefox but if I try to open up something like Security Center or almost anything from Control Panel, it won't let me open it. For instance, when I try to open up Add or Remove Programs from Control Panel a window pops up saying "C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe Application not found." I am able to open up most files,... Hi.Can anyone tell me how I can remove a program from the list when you click Start / All Programs list on one user account but not on any other? If I remove a program it seems to remove it from all accounts on the computer. There are three accounts on my PC running Windows XP Home. Many thanks in advance.

Answer:Remove programs from Start/All Programs list

You can copy the program you want to have under a particular account to the Start Menu folder for those accounts and delete it from the Start Menu folder of All Users.Click on My Computer and look in C:\Documents and Settings\ and you will see a number of folders. One will be called All Users and there will be three others for the accounts you have set up. Open folder \All Users\Start Menu\ and look for the program you want to move. It may be in folder Programs or even in a named folder in here. Cut the program and copy into the appropriate \Start Menu\ folder for your account.Hope that helps.

Question: Listed programs

Programs listed in Programs are different than programs listed on the Install/change window.
1. What are the differences in these two program listings?
2. What determines where a program is listed?

Answer:Listed programs

Hello Moose,

The Programs and Features (Control Panel) window will only include installed programs that have a uninstall option. Most do these days though.

I'm not sure what location you mean with "Programs". If you mean the C:\Programs Files folder, then the programs that come with Windows 7 will not be listed in Programs and Features.

Please post back with more details on that location so we can take a look to see for you.

Hi -I have Vista Home Basic  32 bit.  I notice that when I go to Control Panel  - Programs and Features several programs are listed such as Adobe AIR.  When I go to "start" and "All Programs" they are not listed.  Should they be listed in "All Programs and what can I do about it?   Thanks    Bob

Answer:Where are programs listed?

Adobe AIR is not a program per se, so it's not listed in programs list.See here: you're not a developer, you can safely uninstall it.

I used the Add/Remove Programs to uninstall several programs and they were and are, no longer showing in the Control Panel listing. I obviously thought they had been successfully removed. Whilst trying to find something else on my PC, using Start, right-click Explore etc, I found these same programs still listed. Can I just delete them again from this list and will they be gone for good then? And do you know why they are still listed at all if theoretically they are already uninstalled?

Answer:Uninstalled programs still listed

I use Windows XP SP 3 on my 5 yr old HP laptop. There are 2 programs I no longer need. Casino Master and Masquee Casino Game Pack. Neither has built-in uninstall feature. They are not shown when I check Control panel/Add-Remove Programs.
Free version of Revo uninstaller doesn't show it either!
Windows Explorer/program files does not show them!
When I click Start/All programs/ Either software, it opens.

I believe they don't take much hard drive space. But, it is annoying that I cannot get rid of them.
What should I do without messing my computer?

Thanks for suggestions.

Hoping some one can assist... Just got my new Vista Ultimate x64 computer. I'm new to Vista and learned that the system sets up 2 program files: one for 64x bit and 1 for 32 bit programs. My issue is HP has loaded a whole slew of crapware and I want to clean it out... I can see it in the x86 files (as well as numerous shortcuts on my desktop) but I cannot find the programs in the add/remove program utility. I had CCleaner as well and they are not listed in there either.

Additionally, when I navigate to the programs I do not see any options to uninstall. Is there a way to get these programs sitting in the x86 folder to show up in my uninstall list?

Some examples of what I'd like to remove are:
Easy Bits for Kids
MSN toolbar
Netzero preloader
Online Services

If I just delete these folders from the x86 folder they dont uninstall, correct?

any direction or assistance is greatly appreciated.. Thanks!

Answer:Uninstalling x86 programs: not listed

think I solved my issue.. I dont think the items in question are really installed.. they are trials so they just link in to the shortcuts. I deleted the shortcuts and removed the folders in the program list.. we'll see..

My Windows 10 START button shows an alphabetical listing of programs on my PC, but some are missing - how come? Is there a way for Win 10 to display ALL of my executable files (including any that I've downloaded and installed) ?

For example, my vlc.exe program (from VIDEOLAN) is not under the "V" listing as I'd expected.

Answer:Win 10: not all programs are alphabetically listed

Mine have newly installed progs (must call them "apps" nowadays!) at the top, then "most used"... for goodness sake just list in alphabetical order, then we know where we are - or where they are

Microsoft are garbling things and hiding things and generally taking us backwards, grrrr.

I expect someone knows how to sort out the programs list, tho - I'm thinking of installing Start10 (or there's a similar one that's free), but not until I get this darn laptop completely set up for my needs.

When I click on the Windows icon in the lower left corner of my screen, a menu opens. At the bottom of that menu is a line that says "all programs". It opens into a menu of programs on my machine.

Inside of "all programs" is listed a folder called Microsoft. Inside of it is Outlook 2010.

However, I recently wanted to send an email using Outlook 2010 by clicking on a link on a website. A window opened that would allow me to select the email client I wanted to use from a list of programs. But I can't find Outlook 2010.

When I click the Windows icon in the lower left corner of my screen & then on "computer" and then on C drive, there is listed in C drive two folders, Programs & Programs (x86). However, the Microsoft folder containing Outlook 2010 is not in either one of them.

When I did a search for Outlook 2010 on my C drive, the result said it can be found at
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Office

However, I cick the Windows icon in the lower left corner of my screen & then on "computer" and then on C drive, I cannot find a ProgramData directory. So, where is my Ourlook 2010?

Answer:Where Do I Find The Files Listed In All Programs?

The default installation location for Outlook 2010 is C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14.

When I try to select Outlook as default from the Default Programs list, it's not even on the list. It also isn't listed in the Associations. I've tried repairing my Office installation, and it's still not showing up. I have it checked in Outlook to be default, but that doesn't seem to do much. How can I get Outlook on my Default Programs list?

I have updated with free Windows 10 from 7 and Google Chrome will not update but gives an error message & after researching, I've tried everything suggested on the web including regedit but not technically able to figure out how to uninstall a program any another way. Haven't found that covers the exact problem.

Answer:How can I uninstall Chrome when it isn't listed in Programs?

Click on Start. Now click on All Apps. Scroll down and find Chrome in the list. Right click, and select Uninstall. That should do it.
If it is not listed here, it is possible you are running Chrome Portable, in which case you only need to delete the file directory where it is installed.

It is my belief that we are approaching a crisis point in Windows malware infestations. Recently I helped someone who found all the standard document types encrypted with two-factor encryption, along with a demand for payment to decrypt them (CryptoLocker malware). The only help I could offer was how not to have that happen again by setting a Group Policy to deny executables in %appdata%. This is done in software restriction policies of the local security policy.

Now %appdata% typically is c:\users\username\appdata\roaming and can be written to by anything or anybody - it's for data after all - but nothing stops programs silently installing and executing from there as well. Hence the need for a software restriction policy - details

It is also wise to use UAC on level 1 to 3 so every non-system application puts up a warning and you have to click to allow it to happen. That prevents most software installed in any place from running without you knowing. The problem is, UAC is a very blunt tool, and I would like to have certain programs I often use (for example backups) operate as white-listed programs so I don't have the irritation of the screen dimming and having to approve every time I use them.

How do I do that ? UAC and local security policy seem to be two independant things.

Answer:Can I overrule UAC with white-listed programs?

I don't think you can, that's the point. Otherwise apps would add themselves to the whitelist.

At the end of the day, the person installing the malware is the users.

Hello Billy,

"Search Protection" looks like one of those extra options not paid attention to that get installed while installing another program. I'd recommend to uninstall this garbage.

Search Protection by Spigot - Should I Remove It?

?The Spigot Search Settings is an application which is part of the Spigot Toolbar. Spigot searchsettings.exe'spurpose is to check periodically your default search engine and restore it to Yahoo in case you agreed to set it to Yahoo in the first place and another application is trying to change it. It's easy to uninstall Spigot Inc Seach Settings at any time. Since the application is part of the toolbar, you must uninstall the Spigot toolbar and that will remove all tracks of searchsettings.exe spigot. Removing a Spigot toolbar from the control panel is easy - Just follow the steps below. Neither the Toolbar nor search settings Spigot Inc are not Spigot Malware, they are simple programs that can be removed easily from your machine. The toolbar communicates with our servers from time to time to check for available software updates such as bug fixes, patches, enhanced functions and new versions. By installing the toolbar, you agree to automatically request and receive updates. When there is a material change to the reference notices or the toolbar software, we will notify you though a pop-up in your web browser. At that point you will be given the chance to accept the new changes and update the toolbar or decline the new changes a... Read more

What is the best/cleanest way of removving programs, the Add/Remove programs way or Uninstall Programs? And what exactly is the difference? tks.

Answer:Acd/remove Programs Or Uninstall Programs

I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but I'll take a stab at it anyway!

The add/remove programs feature of Windows is an easy way to access the uninstaller for most programs.

I also like to use a program called Uninstall Plus! This program starts the uninstaller, then after that runs it then searches the registry for any traces that were left behind and removes them.

Not all program's uninstallers are created equal. Many, if not all, leave stuff behind.

Hi Everyone,

I am experiencing a strange problem when attempting to uninstall programs from Control Panel --> Add / Remove programs.

When I attempt to uninstall a program, the corresponding programs "uninstaller", asks for a network resource.

Here is an example screen shot of what I am seeing when I attempt to uninstall Ad Aware:

It doesn't seem to matter what I am attempting to uninstall. In all of the uninstall scenarios that I have seen Add / Remove programs asks for an MSI file with a similar name to the program that I am attempting to uninstall.

I believe that Windows thinks an MSI file was used to install the program in the first place, and therefore it is asking for the file in order to uninstall. However I did not use an MSI file to install Ad Aware (or any of several other programs that will no longer uninstall).

If anybody has any suggestions on how I can fix this issue with my computer they will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your assistance.

Kind Regards,

Answer:Can't uninstall programs (through Add / Remove programs)

firstly, if you want to get rid of the programmes then try the free version ofRevo uninstallerwhich will remove every last trace, from the registry too, if any of your progs are adware then perhaps that could be one of the issues stopping you from removing them any other way.

hi... i'm looking for a program or a way to remove specific programs from my add/remove programs window without actually removing them from my computer.

to be more specific for you guys that need specific... i want to "hide" or "remove" SPECIFIC ENTRIES that are in "add/remove programs" so they do not populate when add/remove programs is opened... i am NOT saying that i want to remove the whole tab or add/remove programs, nor am i saying i want to remove the add/remove programs icon in my control panel, or windows components in my add/remove programs.

Answer:hiding programs in add/remove programs

Why? Reason I ask is a lot of times people ask for something specific like this they are often heading down the wrong path, and end up with a specific odd-ball request like this. Sometimes the research is done only to find the solution won't work.

So I went to bed last night and everything was ok on my pc. I rarely turn it off so left it on as usual. I have Comodo Firewall, AVG and AdAware running in the background which normally gives me a heads-up when something is trying to get in.

This morning when I got on my computer I noticed that I could not click on links within certain websites. I rebooted thinking that that would be the problem......but something more sinister was lurking around the corner.

After the reboot I noticed that comodo was no longer fact, none of my "normally running" protection was. Also, I can no longer get online. I tried running spybot, mbam, avg, adaware and superantispyware in safemode but couldn't get some of them to run at all.

mbam gives me a "vbAccelerator SGrid II runtime error '0' and the run-time error '440': Automation Error." error.

avg gives me a "Problem with Shortcut" The item 'avgui.exe' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly." error

I tried to remove a program from the Control Panel/Programs/Uninstall a Program but when I click on the "Uninstall a Program" link, it does nothing.

My "Help and Support" does nothing when I click on it either.

I tried the System Restore but once it opens I cannot click on anything to restore, all i have access to is the cancel button, I cannot even turn it on or off.

I also attempted... Read more

Answer:Programs not starting, can't remove programs, etc....

I figured out how to get everything back to normal.........and I feel like a complete idiot.

I forget sometimes that this is Windows 7 and not XP. All I had to do was to reboot with F8 (which I had done numerous times but failed to see) and then select "REPAIR COMPUTER"! Voila! Now everything is back to normal and I am running Mbam which should get rid of whatever caused this in the first place.
