Performance drastically degrades on running a DOS program alongwith any other program

Question: Performance drastically degrades on running a DOS program alongwith any other program

When I run any DOS game like Allen Border's Cricket, etc. my system's performance degrades drastically when I run the same along with any media player like RealOne or Windows Media Player 9.
What exactly happens is that while I'm playing this DOS Game with its options of Music and Fx turned off for less memory consumption and at the same time I'm listening to any music with the option of Visualisation selected to 'None', again to free up memory, but still my system becomes slow, the music stops in between & resumes playing by itself, the game also becomes slow and then again starts working properly long with the music.

I fail to understand that inspite of having 512 MB DDRSD Ram & 1.9 Ghz processor still then why is the performance so poor even when I've disabled most of the options that consume more memory!

Please help sooooon!!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello!  I hope someone can help me with this.... I have AVG Free on my Vista PC.  I clicked the "fix performance" button.  The scan said that I had over 250 registry errors, as well as junk files, fragments, etc.  I clicked the "fix now" button, it did what it does, and since then I can't connect to the internet at all.  Already checked with my ISP, they sent out a tech, and a second tech stopped in to help after two hours without a solution.  Both of the techs were able to connect through my modem with the wireless feature, and when I brought down my laptop, I was able to connect with the Ethernet cable. I tried to resolve it with AVG's support live chat, but that was a total joke.

My thought is that the AVG program deleted something that was necessary for the connection to go through.

Any ideas?????

Thanks in advance

Hello,Hopefully my description of my problem isn't too broad or vague, I'll do the best I can, being a laywoman.Approximately 3 1/2 weeks ago, I began to delete many unused and unwanted programs, temp files, etc from my Toshiba laptop, as it had gotten a bit bogged down recently, and I was hoping to increase performance speed. I also ran a full error check on the hard drive, which took 2 1/2 days to complete (I had never run one before, probably very stupidly). Once it finished, I immediately began to notice processing problems with the computer: it would take up to a minute to load .JPG photos, where it had previously been almost instantaneous. I started to get lots of "Windows Explorer/Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" error messages; my start-up load time for Windows after user login could easily be up to 7 or 10 minutes before the computer stopped "thinking" and I could actually open basic programs; it would sometimes be a full minute before the start menu would open after clicking on "start"...The list goes on in the same vein. In particular, I've started to get error messages saying "DrWatson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close." Also, I've had to start using CtrlAltDlt to close programs which appear to freeze up. I was away for two weeks and have come back to my laptop this week, and have tried troubleshooting with msconfig, changing the start-up pro... Read more

Recently I've upgraded the BIOS of my ThinkPad P70 from 2.10 to 2.11. After this upgrade the speed of my DDR4-SODIMM went down by 20% , from 2666 MHz downto 2133 MHz. The release notes mention something about fixing specific memory modules, but they sure broke mine! On a related subject, the P70 apparently does not support XMP2.0. The maximum speed support by my RAM is  is XMP-3002 @ 3000 MHz. The P70 only supports the JEDEC speed: #7 @ 2666 MHz with BIOS 2.10, now #5 @ 2133 MHz with BIOS 2.11. The P70 is supposed to be Lenovo's high-end machine, it needs support for up-to-date hardware. It really is a shame thatA) Lenovo does not support regular RAM (afer all, XMP is a common memory standard), andB) teh latest BIOS upgrade just cripples the machine by another 20%.

Hi guys, it's a pleasure to meet you all =)

To the problem: why is it that the performance of a new computer always ends up degrading over time? I use perfectdisk 11 for disk defragmentation, I use avast antivirus and multiple antispyware (windows defender, spybot, lavasoft ad-ware, malwarebytes) so my computer should be clean... but why is it that I'm so tempted to format my vista/xp dual boot to windows 7?

It seems that the only way to make your pc fast again is to format.... I lost a lot in terms boot times and reaction times... but what I hate most is how it seems that the FPS are hurt too...

I read on the forum about this program "game booster" so I'm going to try it out... but other than that do I have any other option to formatting?

I've searched all over the internet for a program that can block another program from running. I've been looking for one so I can block FireFox and MSN from running while I'm playing games. It's really annoying when I'm rendering a map in SimCity4 and MSN decides to log in, or a pop-up comes up in the middle of rendering. If you play SimCity4, then you know why I'm so annoyed about it.

I've tried WinTasks 5, but it only blocks the program if a user initiates program. Because a pop-up isn't intiated by a user, WinTasks does not block it.

Does anyone else know of a program that will completely block Firefox and MSN, but also have the option of un-blocking them after I'm done playing a game?

PS: I know I really should find a way to get rid of the pop-ups, but all my Anti-Virus/Spam/Malware/Adware programs freeze up when it tries to fix all the infected fiiles.

Hello,

I use my work PC mainly for developing an application in VB.NET using Visual Studio standard 2008. Up until a couple of weeks ago the system has run perfectly but during the last wee while ive noticed it takes ages to boot. And running even more than one or two applications cripples the machine to the point where your waiting around for 60seconds + for outlook to load.

PC SPEC:
Intel Core2 6400 @ 2.13GHz
2.00GB RAM
Vista Business 64-bit
System rating = 4.9
Anything untoward in this HJT log?

Hey all,

Just wondering if anybody has any ideas here. I installed the D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N router on my home network approximately 2 months ago. I have 3 computers connected to it most of the time. Two desktop PC's hardwired to the gigabit ethernet ports, and one laptop (Dell 1520 with N card) connecting wirelessly. I also have a WD 1TB My Book World Edition connected to a gigabit port.

Until about a week ago, network performance was great. Since then however, it has been terrible. Ripping a movie to the World Edition used to work flawlessly. Now about 5 times per DVD it will pause for a couple of minutes, and the video preview is just a black screen. Loading simple web pages use to be almost instant, now it can take 5-10 seconds, on all 3 computers.

I have turned off the WD drive to see if it had anything to do with it, but there is no change.

Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this, or what I could do to restore my network performance to its previous glory?

Thanks!
Doug

Answer:Network performance has slowed drastically... using DIR-655

Sounds like your ISP is throttleing your bandwidth. I've heard a lot of them are doing that now, though none of them admit it. They specfically watch for people downloading things like DVD's or "torrents" and sporadically throttle you to conserve bandwidth or shape traffic. Kinda like QoS on the ISP side.

It could also be configurations on your end however. Has anything changed? Any new installations? Have you run a virus scan? Spyware scan?

The virus and sypware scans would be the first, and easiest thing to check. Next, make sure speed/duplex settings on the router ports, match the NIC's they are connected to. If the router's ports are set to "Auto", the computer's NIC must also be set at Auto. If they don't match, you will drop packets.

Edit:

I just re-read your post. When you say ripping a movie, are you downloading it from the Internet? Or just moving it on your internal network? If it's just internal, then ignore my comment about the ISP throttleing your bandwidth.

I am reasonably computer-literate, at least to the point of maintaining an efficient and virus free computer to operate at top performance. Inexplicably, my gaming performance on applications which normally achieve steady frames in the 40's and 50's range are completely stuttering around 2-3. My computer is very well maintained, with a commit charge of 123, regularly defragged, registry cleaned, scanned for viruses, etc. I thought that it might be a case of conflicting drivers, and as such updated all of them, with the exception of my BIOS (was going to try but am out of floppy disks). The only other thing that I can think of besides a BIOS conflict is that in the add/remove programs list is a Client Hack 1.9.2d that cannot be removed, nor is it recognized when I do deep scans with kaspersky or bitdefender. it seems unlikely to me that one virus is drastically reducing my gaming performance, its possible that a particular setting on my computer is wrong, but I checked everything I know (including BIOS AGP aperture settings, etc). Please, any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated, as this has been driving me mad as I've been trying to remedy this on my own for the past few days.

We have found Avast and AVG Grisoft Free to be reliable freeware. We have those installs on great numbers of home and college computers.

Keep in mind that no company is 100 percent perfect... There are 87 security companies... many do their own design and updates, while others copy each other. You must use some reporting software that keeps you updated on what infestations are being found by which companies, and how long it takes their competition to adapt.

After a few minutes playing games with excelent frames, the whole system throttles down and game becomes unplayable. No overheat detected in any compnent. Laptop is plugged in all times. I always use a cooling pad.   I tried tampering with windows power options but no use.  I did find out that if i unplug it from power and plug it in again the issue is momentarily resolved. Thank you.

Over the past few days my computer (Dell Studio 14z, Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 @2.4GHz, 3GB RAM, plenty of free disk space) has progressively gotten slower and slower. Often, while typing in a textpane like this one, the system will appear to freeze, catching up with me 5-15 seconds later. Firefox seizes up constantly, appearing to be unresponsive, only to return 15-60 seconds later. Moving from tab to tab in FF takes 10-30 seconds. (FF has frozen twice while I was composing this message, once for about 90 seconds.) Additional possibly useful information - I have an external 27" monitor connected via HDMI, and when the computer goes to sleep and wakes up, I get a message saying that a monitor driver failed, but the monitor continues to work. I have had similar problems with the monitor disconnected so this is probably not the problem, but I will restart with it disconnected and post an update. Log follows.

TIA for the help - you guys are always great!

Hey guys!

For a while now, my computers performance randomly drops down a lot. Mostly it is just the multimedia performance, as far as I can tell it, since the rest seems to work fine. It happens like weekly, and here is what I can notice:
- I can play one match of League of Legends without any lag, on stable 60 fps without a problem, but in the next match, it drops down to 30 fps at most, but typically it is between 10 and 20..
- for testing, I tried another game, Pro Evolution Soccer 2013, same performance drop...
- I can still watch any 1080p HD film without a problem
- closing every running app won't help
- the problem won't go away if I logout - login, so it should not be a user-related app running
- a reboot of the PC solves the problem, until it happens again
- ONLY a reboot seems to help
- in task manager, everything seems fine, CPU is on 20% at most(with loads of Chrome tabs opened)

I have no idea where to start looking, and what could cause it. Here are the specs of my system:

- Windows 8 Professional x32, MSDNAA license with the latest updates installed
- Core2Duo E6750
- 4 GB Ram
- Geforce GTS 450 1 GB

Any idea is appreciated, thanks in advance! cheers

Answer:Windows 8 performance randomly drops drastically

Out of curiosity, what are your GPU temperatures at when you notice the slowdown?

You can use this utility: SpeedFan - CNET Download.com

Make sure to check temps while your game is running at its slow pace. If it's anywhere in the mid-to-high 90s celsius, most cards will have a huge performance drop.

Hi,

This problem has me completely baffeled. I'm not even sure if this is the right forum to be posting in. (If you can suggest a forum better related to topic please do).

Recently I noticed my whole system being slower and more sluggish. Especially playing games. I checked my windows experience index and it had changed from 6.5 to 2.9.

The only scores in the list that have changed signifigantly are my cpu (now at 2.3) and my memory access(2.9).

This happend to me once before about 6 months ago. In the end I updated my dell bios from a10 to a11 and my score went up to 6.5 and my performance was percieveably improved.

Now I dont understand why (what seems like the same problem) has happened again.

I'd be very grateful if somebody could help me figure out why my system has suddenly slowed down so drastically.

Thanks,

dub

Answer:CPU and memory performance suddenly drastically reduced

Take a look at Task Manager when it is running slow. Look at processes to see what is taking up RAM and CPU cycles.

Does it boot as quickly as before?

I wouldn't expect a BIOS change to improve things.

Look at Resource Monitor to see how much RAM you are using at any particular time.

Have you done any tests of your RAM or hard drive to confirm they are OK?

How confident are you that you have no viruses or malware?

Often, while typing in a textpane like this one, the system will appear to freeze, catching up with me 5-15 seconds later. The cursor seems to "stick" regularly, recovering 1-5 seconds later. Various windows are completely unresponsive (no cursor change, nothing), but recover a few seconds or minutes later with a 'flash' and a screen refresh. Perhaps most annoying - Explorer crashes 100% of the time upon first use after a restart. It *usually* is OK after that, but still occasionally crashes. The performance monitor shows that sometimes, but not all the time, when these problems happen I am at 100% CPU usage. Memory usage appears to be OK.

DDS results follow, and ATTACH.TXT is attached. I'd really appreciate some help. You guys have always provided great advice! Thanks in advance.

I've been searching for a program that will measure/display the CPU utilization on an AMD Turion 64 X2 laptop. Process Explorer is running on it, but I suspect that it is only showing one processor.

Based on the Performance of this PC, running Vista, I've got the feeling that one processor is idling most of the time...even if the other is topping out.

The application environment is NOT just running one CPU intensive app, but running many smaller tasks. The machine lags a lot for having twin 1.6 Ghz processors.

So, anyone know of a measurement utility that will show both processors OR can be directed AT a specific processor in a dual environment?

Answer:A program to measure Duo Performance???

Since you are using vista, there is a neat gadget you can download. Do a search for gadgets for vista. This one is called multi meter. It shows both cores and ram usage.

I am running graphics design software called Vectorworks VW2008 on a pc with Windows XP Home 3, with a Pentium 4 1.8 Ghz CPU with 2Gb RAM and a Sapphire Radeon x1600 Pro graphics card. Problem: after using program for maybe 1 hr or so pc slows to crawl or stops, VW freezes and using up 90 - 100% of CPU. Sometimes after wait of poss 15 minutes things start going again and I can start work again. Clearly this is a major pain and I need to sort it. I think that this may be a graphics card problem - or is it my CPU speed? I don't want to waste my money so any help gratefully received. Thanks.

If I want to dedicate most of my processor speed and memory usage to a certain program everytime I start the program.. How can I change that for good so when I start the program or computer it will be automaticcally setup for it??

situation:
If Im running the program already and go to the task manager, processes tab and highlight the certain program (lets says AutoCAD), right mouse click and set priority to HIGH.. the computer uses most of its resources for that program.. How do I set that for good... So I dont have to keep on doing the long way of it everytime I use the program and/or reboot??

i want to change the priority of a running program to stay HIGH all the time, when I reboot the computer too...

sorry if this is the incorrect section and feel free to move to the correct section.

an acer al2016w (wide lcd monitor) came with my computer. Are there any programs you can download to improve graphics? like is there away to get finer resolution while watching windows media videos? windows media 11 came with my computer, the picture is decent, at times a little dark and simply going to the enhancement section to brighten things up usually don't come out fine. I also changed some of the settings on the accer monitor but nothing special. maybe after years of having a regular big backed 15inch monitor i'm expecting incredible things from my 20inch flat lcd screen.

Another thing when i'm up close to the monitor looking at pictures they look great! but if i take a couple steps back the pics seem to get quickly loose brightness.... so is there a program to make your lcd monitor show better or enhance things?

current settings

Color quality 32-bit (highest)
1024 by 768 pixels
is there away to enhance the above? thanks

I have 2 dock programs: object dock which Ive had it for a while and Y's Dock which I just got today. After using either of them to open a game (a steam game like CS:S or HL2, havent tested others yet) I get a sorta mouse lag effect when dragging windows like aim or minimized firefox windows after closing the game. I get this using either dock, so my question is does that happen to any of you guys? Opening the game from its original icon does not produce the effect, and Ive made sure of it before testing.

If one of you has had the problem, were u able to fix it? (obviously Id like to know how too)

Edit: I forgot to mention that closing the program instanly makes the "mouse lag" fanish

Hi,

has anyone noticed the extremely slow response from other program while you copying data to the SSD ?
while I'm not copying, every program run faster than light.

here my config :

X6 1090T
16GB RAM

SSD (C300) : system and program

2To HDD1
1To HDD2
so I'm copying 10GB from HDD1 to the SSD, speed of transfer : 65MB/s

if I try to open Firefox, or VLC or the task manager, it takes forever (68 seconds to open vlc)
while not copying : less than a second
Could anyone try that ? copying a big file from a HDD (or another SSD) to a system SSD and then try to open a program ?
[(not copying SSD to the same SSD or partition)]

here the benchmark of the SSD :

Answer:SSD - program performance whilte copying

Sorry, not an answer to your problem, but copying a 10GB folder from my 2nd HDD (Seagate 500GB 7200.12) to my OS SSD, no issues opening any programs, and very quick file transfer time (about a minute). A Guy

Hi Guys,

A few days ago my laptop almost completely stopped responding. After reaching the login page it became unbearably slow. I started by "patiently" waiting for login to complete, but initial startup was taking forever to get the startup programs running so as the computer became responsive I started closing start up programs as they began. This itself was a long process because everything took forever to respond, most encountering "not responding" issues along the way that I just had to wait out. I was eventually able to run malwarebytes, super antispyware and my AV (ZoneAlarm). All showed no infectious programs and checking the task manager there were no unrecognised exe files running. One thing I did notice occassionally was multiple entries of a windows media player executable called, I think, wmpscnfg.exe(???) It was not in the TM long enough for me to write it down accurately but I think that is the name of it. Would that indicate something unusual? The entries can be maybe 8 or more very very briefly and then they all disappear.

Some programs will open on first click, although taking a while to start. Some rograms do not open on clicking even though my cursor indicates that the program is loading.

Once a program is open it seems to work fine as long as you don't try to open another program and then the first one will slow right down or become unresponsive until the second one is closed via the TM.

Firefox seems to become unresponsiv... Read more

Is there a reliable program that can scan your system and see if there are ways to enhance its performance? I've use "System mechanic 6" "Registry Cleaner" & others. I was then told most of those types of programs are either worthless & even sometimes dangerous. I'm never sure if my HP laptop system is running at its best level. I regularly run Several anti-spyware programs & AVG anti-virus. I've run "highjackthis" periodically as well. So I feel pretty comfortable with protection. I was hoping that there is a recommended, safe, effective way to make sure I'm getting the most out of my system.

As some of you may know, I've just built a new system and it is AMAZINGLY fast... (10 seconds and I'm at the welcome screen, 3 seconds and I'm ready to use it and 5 second shutdown)... But I really want to know if I'm getting the most out of it. I don't want to overclock or do anything that voids the warranty and I dont really want to buy anything else.

The bottom line is, I'm after a porgram that will either compare my current performance to the maximum performance that particular component can achieve or give me a detailed list of my performance which I can then perhaps post here and then see what can be improved.

All replies would be appreciated.

There are plenty of benchmarking programs out there. Futuremark.com creates a few that are used in almost all benchmarks done in product reviews. Those are good to start off with.

Okay, I have had my Acer Aspire 5520-5912 with Crystal Eye webcam laptop for about three years now. Between these years, I have surfed many websites and downloaded lots of files with in that time. Now, has displayed slower performance lately, definitely not at the speed that it used to be. I rani a spybot S&D program scan on my computer and got this:

AdwareAlert: 3 entries Malware
DoubleClick: 1 entry Browser
Right Media: 1 entry browser
Statcounter: 1 entry browser
Zedo: 1 entry browser
Also, my computer has a noticeable error with its webcam. I can access it with the company of any chat program that allows it. But when I click on the program icon itself, it gives me the message that it has stopped working and windows will notify me of a solution that is available. I'm not sure if this is a registry error or not.

Windows Version I'm using: Vista (yes, I hate it)
So, if anyone could assist me with my current problems, I'd really appreciate it.

Hello,

I have a fairly fast computer i guess and i do use torrent fairly frequently to download games, movies, and music.Recently while playing a game, gta 3 san andreas... the game suddenly crashed for apparently no reason. Afterwards all actions (such as using windows media player, opening folders, going onilne, etc.) suddenly became a lot slower. It didnt seem to be malware or something because no actual change happened to the computer other than the slowness. I had ran virus scans with Ad aware with Lavasoft and Super Anti Spyware with no results within scanning for hours. i had ran freeware AML registry cleaner but the computer would randomly reboot before the scan could complete with a blue screen appearing right before the screen booted. After turning off automatic restart for system failure i got a good look at the screen and it read:
"
***STOP:0X0000008E(0xC0000005,0X8062F450,0xA696A974,0x00000000)
Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete
"
I had also tried rebooting with "Last known good configuration but still had the same problems
I still have 90gb free space with 250gb used and usually have had no virus problems other than a malware issue that was resolved by my sister (who is away now and cannot help anymore). Disk Defragmentation is done so that should also not be a problem.

Help would be very appreciated

Hello Ebb1611

Things to try
1. Test the RAM
2. Update your video drivers

1. Test RAM
If you have more than one stick of RAM (256MB or more) swap them over or take one out and try again with only stick #1. If it does not help or makes things worse swap the sticks and try again with only stick #2. Running with one stick at a time will identify if you have a bad stick. Try moving the RAM to a different slot as well.

OR
You can put either of these free programs on a floppy and test the RAM. Let them run for hours to do many passes if you can

memtest86 http://www.memtest86.com/

Windows Memory Diagnostic http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Memtest on CD ( this is a bootable CD and can be used when you cannot access an operating system)
http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/256/mirrors.php

Use your CD burner to write it onto a CD as an ISO image
Test with only one stick of RAM installed at a time

2. Video drivers
Go to the manufacturer of the video card`s site and look for updated drivers for your card.

Hi,My laptop was suddenly attacked by a virus when Firefox was unable to block a pop-up ad. Something happened and numerous screens began popping up from Avira antivirus and no matter how many times I deleted or quarantined the virus, it kept growing in number. Now, I cannot run any installed programs and cannot install/run any existing antivirus programs in my computer.NEW UPDATED PROBLEMAfter restarting my computer, I am no longer able to access Windows in normal mode. I can only run windows vista in safe mode. I have no network access as the virus is blocking all networks and I cannot access the internet from safe mode. I was unable to start up my Avira antivirus scan but was able to do a scan on all active units and Avira revealed about 8 detections with the Trojan TR/Alureon.BF2 in some location that I can't find: globalroot\systemroot\system32\UACeuivxhxbvr.dllI cannot install any other antivirus programs even though they were renamed. After running Avira, all executable files and shortcuts stop working. If I attempt to run Malwarebytes, the computer restarts. When it starts up in normal mode, all I get is a black screen and the mouse arrow. I cannot run system restore as the virus has deleted all restore points. I also cannot run system recovery mode as the virus has disabled that option. I'm currently using a computer that has been infected by a program called Performance Solution Hotrevenue (I thought it was a nice name ) It's listed in the add/remove programs menu. I haven't tried to remove it through Windows or otherwise because after searching online it appears to be a tricky one. I could use some help getting rid of this. I've run a DDS log and I've attached it. I also attempted running GMER.exe to generate a log, but every time the program runs I get a STOP: C000021a Fatal System Error with a lovely blue screen. The OS keeps crashing based on the GMER program. After 5 attempts with the same results I gave up. The OS error is ONLY related to running GMER. If you're wondering, yes, I turned off the IAT/EAT option, misc drives, and show all but the system won't even make it through a partial scan w/o crashing. I'm wondering if combo-fix is the answer on this one, but I'll obviously wait for your response before moving forward. Thanks for your help in advance and let me know if any additional info is needed especially since I'm not supplying a GMER log. Hello
I would be very grateful if you could possibly answer my question.

I have a new modern computer AMD 2.0 XP running Windows XP Professional.

If you close a program after running it and it appears to be closed but the task manager shows that it is running, what does this mean?

Does it mean that there is something wrong with the Software of the running program or is it a Windows System Problem?

I wrote a very easy program compiled in VB6 which after running I closed and does not show up in Task Manager. Everything is obviously ok.
However my other much more complicated compiled VB6 program after being run and closed, shows up as running in the Task Manager?

I just want to know what this means please.

Is there something wrong with the program I have made?
When you continue to open and close it, more icons of the running program are seen in Task Manager.
But none on the main normal bottom windows task bar, where the start button is.(Which I presume is correct)
Thanks

Gary.

Answer:After Running and closing my VB6 Program. Task Manager say's it is running?

Sounds like you have an active window somewhere although it is hidden. Put debug.print code in all of your form.load/unload events and run it in the debugger. Make sure you having matching unloads for each load.

Also, callbacks (like timers) may be the culprit. What does your application do?

I have a uses about .5 MB when resident but not doing much. When it actually starts processing it reads somewhere between 50 and 70 files (depending on what it's going to do) and grows to about 4 GB. This period of reading files takes about 25 seconds on Win7 and about 5 minutes on Win10. The Win7 box is a bit more powerful - i7 4771 @ 3.50GHz vs. i7 930 @ 2.80GHz. Both read from SSDs, but the Win7 box SSD is has a SATA-III connection while the Win10 box SSD has a SATA-II connection. Process Explorer shows long periods when the application is not reading anything but shows a nearly constant 12KB/sec "Other" I/O activity. The Win10 system shows nearly constant reads (like around 50 MB/sec, but it varies a lot). I have tried using Resource Monitor but it seems to show I/O activity averaged or accumulated over a 60 second window. I can tell what files have been opened, but not which currently have activity. Somebody on suggested it might be paging activity that is delaying the program, but I have 12GB ram (vs. 16GB on the Win7 box). I don't think that is the problem. Can anybody suggest what I should look at to diagnose this? I really don't want to upgrade my current Win7 system until I understand what is going on.

A program that I am familiar with that affects performance consuming at least half of CPU does not appear in the programs that can be uninstalled. I know it is there because it does show in the downloads located in the start menu. This program creeps in when you download certain programs from the internet such as toolbars if you do not uncheck them. I am usually careful about any downloads but since I enrolled in an on-line college course for my bachelor's certain programs do need to be downloaded.
You guys helped me out last time with a problem of which came the perfect solution. I am hoping for the same this time. The program is Babylon and I do not know if you are familiar with this problem.
Any assistance offered would be gratefully appreciated!

Thank you,
Myrna Celaya

Answer:How to uninstall program not listed in downloads affecting performance

If you can remember whatever it was that you downloaded that included the troublesome program I would think your best bet is a system restore to a point before you installed it.

It's for very reasons such as this that it's always best to choose a Custom install wherever possible so that you have control over what add-ons are installed.

I've lost count of the number of times I've told programs I don't want the Ask toolbar or anything like it.

Hi all..

This is my 2nd post in here. Before i start, pardon me for my poor English and non-high tech brain.

I really need help. Ok, this going to be a long post. But let me inform of my laptop first, my laptop is Compaq Presario CQ40-538TU, 32 bit, using Windows 7 Ultimate. I'm a heavy laptop user. i use it around 6-7 hours in workdays, and it could reach to 24 hours non-stop in weekend, sometimes even to 1,5 days (36 hours) to 48 hours in weekend. i mostly use my laptop to browse some websites i visit often and to watched movies/dramas i downloaded.

Few days ago (on July 22nd) when i started my laptop i got this message :

"Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS. One of your disk needs to be checked for consistency. You can cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue. To skip disk checking, press any key within(10)seconds."

it happened before, and usually it completed the checking to all the 3 stages. but now it shows this :

"Cannot open volume for direct access. Autochk cannot run due to an error caused by a recently installed software package. Use the system restore feature from the control panel to restore the system to a point prior to the recent software package installation.
An unspecified error occured (766f6c756d652e63 3f1)"
The problem is, i didnt remember what new software in installed, as i'm not high tech savvy, i never installed software that i'm not really sure if it save t... Read more

I like some of the features that they have added to Vista's Realiability and Performance Monitor snap-in, but is it possible to record the detailed network utilization for each individual program instead of the entire NIC. I can view the current network useage for each program by looking at the overview, but I would like to record this to a log file. And I can't figure out a way to do this with counters in the Performance Monitor as it appears that the counter options are indentical to XP.

I could set up a counter on the entire NIC and record each program by having only one program running at a time, but this is tedious. I know there are probably freeware programs out there that can do this, but I was hoping to use the performance monitor as it appears to be quite capable of this and I like the advanced log settings & trigger options. And if I were to pay for a software solution, to get my money's worth I would want it to be able to cap the bandwidth for each program, so I'd probably go with something like NetLimiter.

Any advice?

Does installing this "shell enhancer" degrades XP performance? I just reformatted and installed a fresh copy of XP Pro, but I am tired of the default themese, I need something new. On the other hand, I am not willing to sacrifice the performance. Is StyleXP bad?

Thanks!

Answer:Does StylXP "degrades" XP performance?

well it depends on what style you are using....you could either use style xp or get an auto patcher like the neowin auto patcher, all it does is patch the uxtheme.dll so you can use custom visual styles....it will only degrade performance if you have some crazy high tech style....it's not that big of a deal if you can't afford a performance degrade or whatever....

Hi, so here's the problem breakdown:

Everytime I run any program, it starts taking a huge amount of CPU, preventing things from working smoothly and making the netire computer lagg. For example, if I run IE8, and try to load a youtube video, the process tab in taskmanager will show it running at around 30-90% cpu, with the total CPU running at 90-100%. The smae thing happens if I run malwarebyte's, registry mechanic, firefox, anything. I've used the updates malwarebytes, which found nothing, checked for viruses with AVG and PC tools firewall plus, fixed registry errors with registry mechanic, and none of this has helped. Additionally, i've defragmented and cleared old files and temporary itnernet files, nothing has worked.

My specs: Processor = AMD Athlon 3700+ 2.2GHz
2 gigs of memory
78gigs of free space left.

I was just wondering if its bad to run more than one Anti-Virus program with sheilds and autoprotect. Like VIR and AVG.
Also running more than one spyware like PestPatrol and SpySweeper?

Answer:Running More Than One Program

I dunno how bad it would be per se... but if you need two programs to do the same job that's a bit redundant, don't you think? Personally I'd pick one program for each job and make sure it's up to date. That way you have that much more of your computer's resources for other things

I'm trying to get a program called search relative 2 to work. This program only runs in DOS, and all atempts open this program have failed. I will go through what i do, and then we'll go from there...i hope

I open the Command Prompt (Run ->> cmd).

Upon opening it, I change the directory to the folder on my desktop the program is (C:\Documents and Settings\Owner.BOOM\Desktop\Search R2)

Then I type in the name of the file (SearchR2.exe).
The next sequence of events happens quite rapidly so I'll try my best to describe it.
The cmd window minimizes, my screen goes black, then the program is restored, and I get the message:

Unable to open 640x480x8bpp VESA2L screen
C:\Docume~1\Owner~1.Boo/Sektop/SEARCH~1>

My own guess is i'm missing a driver that will let me go to 640x480x8bpp or something. Any suggestions on what to do to get this program working??
Thanks for any help!!

Hi to everyone. My system specs are 300mgh Pentium, 80mb sd ram, 2 gig hd, running 98se. I only run 1 program in dos, so my experience is severely limited. My problem is that the program that used to run aok everytime I ran it (Delindex, a index deleteing program) is now refusing to run. When I go to my C: prompt in dos, and type the command(which I know is right), delindex goes through all the steps it needs to before running, and when I tell it to run, it does nothing. I have uninstalled it, and reinstalled it to no avail. I know it is a valid program, because I installed it on another comp at the same time, and have no problem with running it on that comp. The only thing I can think of I have done is uninstall a couple of programs the right way. Windows, and windows programs seem to be running ok. I wish I had more info, but at this time that`s it. Any info, and or suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Regards
Mike Peters

I'm not sure if this is a virus or not. I scanned both with Norton and Trend Micro's HouseCall. Both found infections and completely removed them. But now, every time I run and close a program it will continue running using about 50% of my CPU. Has anyone else had this? Also, I frequently find System Idle Process using 50-100% of my cpu for very long periods of time.

I notice rundll32.exe is running using about 50% of my cpu but can be ended. Which makes me think its a trojan. Anyone else have any of these probs?

ANY help is GREATLY appreciated!

Hi Friends!
Can I run a program installed in a os (in a dual boot system) from the other one?
Being more precise .... can I use Internet download manager or utorrent in both the oss as they will download the same thing continuously if I switch os?

It may be that the program is installed in both oss; if I downloaded 40% in xp, may I complete the next 60% in 7?

Answer:Running a program in either OS.

Hello Arc,

Unfortunately, that would be extremely difficult. Basically, the program needs to be installed in each OS. You could install in on any drive you want, but even if you installed it in the D drive, you would still need to install again in the other OS.

Hope this helps,
~Jonathan

I have an old Dos based database program with all the files etc., copied to CD, that I would like to install on my win 7 64 bit system.Originally it was installed on win 3.1 (don't laugh too much) It runs ok on an Xp 32 bit system, but not on my Win 7 system. To run it on Xp involved copying all the files to the C drive and then clicking on a batch file which opens the program.I have tried this on my Win 7 PC, copying the files just to the C drive and also to the program files x86 folder without success. (I did edit the batch file to the correct path)When following the above procedure, after clicking on the batch file, something happens briefly (flash of dos/command prompt screen and 'wait' icon) then nothing. Is there any way I could get it to run on Win 7 64 bit? Hi, i dont know if this is where i should post this question. sorry if it is the wrong
forum.

I was wondering if i could write a command that let me run a program (Ccleaner) then after that prog was done running have another program (ad- aware) run, then when thats done have another (spy-bot), then another (avast).

it would be one file that you would have to click to make all of them run one after another.

This is for a pc i built for my mom and it would make it easier for her so she doesnt call me every week to ask questions.

i appreciate any help you could give me.

thank you

Answer:running one program after another?

Hi, welcome to TSF.

You could make a batch file (name.bat) in Notepad listing the programs you want to run. You might need to put a line of code between each one to wait for each program to finish before running the next, but I'm a bit out of practice with this so hopefully someone wiser can explain better.

I have the same problem with my computer-illiterate dad so I created a folder on the desktop with all the shortcuts for his updates and security programs, labelled in the order he should run them. Seems to work ok for him.

I downloaded the SpoutCraft client earlier and it will not open. I just double click and it will not open. Simple as that. What's going on?

Answer:Program Not Running

Hello Spencer and welcome to Seven Forums.

I went to the download link you provided. The SpoutCraft Installer successfully downloaded to my desktop. When I double clicked the installer it opened up the required dialog box asking for my Minecraft login credentials. So it seems to be working on my computer.

Perhaps there was a momentary glitch when you downloaded the client earlier. Try clearing your browser's cache and try again. (Control panel > Internet options > Browsing history.)

Hello,

I would appreciate any help you can give to shed light on my problem please.

I have posted this log, as after running Norton, Spybot etc etc, I am still left with "1 program running".

This isn't my Netbook but was handed to me to "fix" from my Nephew. He has been using it to play Minecraft apparently. It had some viruses etc but Norton has taken care of most of it. I have run spyware checkers too, which cleared more. I am still left with this puzzle of "1 program running".

When I go in from the "log in" page, there is no program running that I can see, so I'm wondering if it is running something it isn't meant to be? Or is this an XP glitch?

As I said, I would be very grateful for any help you can provide.

Kind regards,
Mel

I quit!
I officially give up my stubborn dogged quest to learn, comprehend, and apply everything I should know about what's running on my PC - what each process does, what program(s) it/they originate in, what other services depend upon them, or whether or not I'll be able to brush my teeth if it/they isn't/aren't running. I don't want to know that rolling back a certain driver or manually installing a .dll file will enable some non-essential process to convert anti-aliased vector lines to maximized battery life, or how some helper file will allow QuickTime to covertly play the contents of Huge Jackman's iPod on my Fisher Price boom box. I concede that I'm incapable of grasping neither the logic (if there is any) nor the specifics relative to the phenomena that is computer science.
Wow, I feel so free now!
Having said all that - I have in the neighborhood of 55 processes that are currently running on this laptop (Sony VGN-N130G) - (it can rise into the 60s). Naturally, I suffer the annoying compromise to the performance that that level of activity brings. For months I've been burning brain cells trying to reduce that number and establish a new "standard" - to no avail.
Would some kind soul take pity on me and spoon feed me the smartest fix to my problematic overload of software comings and goings?? Please??
I am including a HiJackThis log that I just generated; if anything more is needed just ask and it shall be yours.

Anyone know what DVBservice.exe is?

Answer:Program running and using up processor

Do you have anything on your computer that involves Hauppauge Inc which is showing in Systray.
If so, then there are a number of solutions via a Google search. Just put "what is dvb service.exe" in the search box.

I like using Zsoft's Photo Finish V 3.0. However for some reason it has stopped working in XP Pro. I had installed it once before and it worked fine. I had removed it because Adobe's Photoshop kept interfering with me making files in Photo Finsih. Even sometimes corrupting them or I could not cut and paste between them. So I removed both programs to start over. I did not reinstall Photoshop. But when I get Photo Finish installed I get this message.

Message error is: zsoft381.drv not found or not enough memory

Never did that before!

Any ideas? Thanks!

Hello, I use chill control V, for my cooler. I have is set to run at startup. It shows in task manager start up tab, but it never starts by itself. Am I missing something simple?

Answer:Program not running at startup

Maybe it's delayed startup?

All my "Not Measured" start a few seconds to a minute after my desktop appears. Is this what you mean?

Hiya,

Okay, I first saw this when shutting down / rebooting the system (picture will be posted). It consists of chrs followed by 'w' then '*' I've tried using ROOKIT DETECTORS, taskmanager and of course... independant process viewers including port explorer to try and trace any internet activity this program may be doing. I've run spyware scans and anti-virus scans nothing has shown up. I use trendmicro pc-cillin and nothing has shown up. I've also searched through registry trying to find any 'out of normal' programs/executables that seemed suspicious but nothing seems to be out of ordinary.

Since I don't know the exact Chactors used for the program name (this will make sense by viewing hte picture below) I've been unable to even search for it on the search engines.

So I present this picture to see if anyone has seen or can figure it out. I had to use my digital camera whilst the computer shut down and take a photo as that was the only way to see the application name.

Answer:Suspicious program running

I would post a HijackThis log for the log specialist to take a look. HijackThis is available here:

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en...ols/hijackthis

Use "Do a system scan and save a log file", and notepad will open with a log of what it finds, copy and paste the contents here. Don't ask it to fix anything.
