Missing bar w/options at left of My Computer screen

Question: Missing bar w/options at left of My Computer screen

I don't know what the correct name for this area is, but I seem to have lost the bar along the left hand side of My Computer window. It had some useful stuff in ther, like a link to the Control Panel. All I see now is a list of the drives in my system. Can someone tell me how to get that back?

I also seem to have lost the tab in the Dektop Properies dialog box that lets me change the wallpaper. Please help if you can!

Preferred Solution: Missing bar w/options at left of My Computer screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Okay so heres the thing... my computer has been pooched since i bought it... I looked and looked for the model i bought so i could post it here for you but it was so long ago i cant remember but its not really important.
Cause right now i just need to narrow down whats wrong based on the symptoms.
You see when i got it it would crash constantly with no prompts or warning or error messages. Every time i tried to play a game it would just go out. Bigger games caused it to go out faster. I took it to a repair guy who said "Its cause your power supply isnt good enough to run this rig" so just to be safe I bought a 850 wattz power supply, more than enough for this computer..
I took it home and it ran fine for abotu a week and could run big games. but than it started doing it again and more and more frequently as time went on (( although that might just be in my head, theres a chance it was never actually fixed )) so i called him up and said it didnt work and he said "Well i ran it in my shop all night with stress testers and if it was gunna go out it woulda did it in my shop. it must be your outlets not being powerful enough to run your computer"
Now.. That doesnt sound right casue it can run my consoles just fine and my old PC and he said it had something to do with my circate board having 1 wire or 2? but we use a fuse box...
anyway... heres the situation. recently it started going out more often as the summer gets closer and when it does go out it will crash like 3 ... Read more

Answer:Computer Crashes.. No options left, no idea whats wrong...

have you tried to just let it idle overnight and see if it idles fine? it is possible you have what they call dirty power in your outlets but that issue is very few and far between with a new power supply in I don't forsee a power issue but it could possibly be a bad ram stick or overheating. I suggest letting it idle overnight 24+ hours and see if it lasts that long idle doing nothing on it

Hi:
I have a terrific HP Laptop which I purchased back in 2007 or 2008 and I rarely use it until last month, probably only once or twice a week with only a few hours.

Recently, I started to use HP Laptop on daily basis and found 'Search' at the left side of the pane/screen is missing/lost when clicking on 'Search' at the top. 'Search' at the address bar is perfectly OK tho'.

Is this issue related to not use it for a while, .... or how did it disappear?

Only seen is 'Google' ad. popping up upon clicking at 'Search' on the tool-bar of the top.

How can I rescue 'Search' at the left pane of screen?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Answer:Missing 'Search' at the left pane of the screen

Are you talking about Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer or what?

Do you mean the "Search" option is missing when you (for example) right-click on your "C:" drive?

Just noticed today that my icons are all blank and when I navigate my hard drive in My Computer, the blue box on the left side with the options is missing. I also cannot seem to shut down the computer by clicking the "Turn Off Computer" button in the Start menu. I figure this is a virus but am not sure. I installed Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.0 within the past week at the behest of the Federal Loan website that sent my loan information via PDF. I wonder if that somehow opened my computer to some virus?

My new Satellite A300 will not load and I didn't have a chance to make a recovery CD.

I have made a backup of the Hard drive and now want to restore the settings back to the beginning.

I tried downloading a Vista recovery disc but the laptop won't boot from that.

Pressing F8 after turning it on doesn't give me the option to repair the computer and pressing zero on start up doesn't make any difference.

Is there a way of telling the computer to look at the partitioned section of the Hard drive and boot from there?

Help is much appreciated

Answer:Missing "Repair Computer" in Advanced Boot Options - Satellite A300

How did you make a backup of the HDD? What software did you use?

To make a Partition bootable, you need to use FDisk to set the partition "active". Win98 Bootdisks can be found at www.bootdisk.com

Answer:how do i center the screen to the left my desktop computer m

It?s possibly a registry key issue. Open a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type regedit, press Enter and in the left pane navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. In the right pane check that the following two values, WallpaperOriginX and WallpaperOriginY are 0 (zero). If not, right-click each, click Modify and make them both zero. Restart the computer. If you?re apprehensive about making changes to registry values, create a system restore point first.

When I used to do a google search, on the left of the page there would be options such as images, UK and a time option (24 hours, week month year) etc. But now it does not appear. A few options appear above the results, including a search tools option - when I click on it, it opens another line of options, such as "the web" and "any time", but how do I get those options to appear at the left of the screen again? (Firefox 17)

Answer:Firefox "search tools" missing from left of screen when searching

It is not just Firefox. As far as I am aware Google have changed the way that search results are displayed and there isn't way to change it back.

-Computer was running and had music playing, screen went black again and music was still playing in the background. So it's a display issue, but the monitor is fine working on another computer
-Says makes like an electrical noise before the screen goes black, mouse won't move

Very frustrated with this...I opened the laptop gently as I would always do  and the hinge on the left side of the laptop just snapped and popped out of the plastic monitor frame.  The design of the hinges are just terrible and i can now see how they work because the case has been damaged just from opening and closing the laptop.  I can now see inside the whole left side of the case.  To top it off I have already invested considerable time into upgrading the OS to Windows 10 and customizing and installing software on this laptop. I cannot close my laptop entirely since the screen closes on an incorrect angle. Since I am out of warranty, is there any way to fix this problem? After reading several posts, it seems to be a common problem with the envy models.

Hello,

I am new to this site. My computer seems to freeze often. Unfortunately, a freezing episode occurred during a windows update, so I turned off my computer even though it says "do not turn off your computer". Ever since I did this, when I try to turn on my computer, the BIOS loading bar goes to about 4/5 the way before it stops and goes into a black screen with a white cursor on the top left. I also cannot access safemode by repeatedly pressing F8. What is wrong with my computer?

Thank you.

OK, first off.. thank you to any one can help me and figure this out.A couple of days ago I placed a hard drive from my old computer into a different tower, and removed the previous hard drive. The old hard drive is set as the master. When the computer is then started it goes through the boot sequence properly then goes to a screen that looks similar to the one located at this link:http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000626.htmWhen I select "load last known good configuration" it just goes to a black screen and the same goes for "start windows normally."When I select any of the "safe modes", it goes through a couple of.. (*insert I have no idea here*) and then just stays on there.. doing nothing.**Insert I have no idea here - I believe I saw something that had "partition" in it.i.e. something/something/partition/something/something.some file typeBy the way, Windows XP was previously on the hard drive and I want to keep it. I've also tried to reinstal it.. and it still just goes straight to the "load last know good config." screen after the boot sequence. I've also checked all connections like a million times... but I'm not a computer genius; that is why I'm here.Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Computer, finishes boot sequences, then goes to a screen with a few options.

You're often going to have problems if you take a windows installation out of one computer and try to boot it on a computer with completely different hardware. But reinstalling XP should fix it. You say you've tried to reinstall XP. Did the install actually complete or did it go wrong during the install?

When i right click on my desktop, obviously i have options like copy, remove, etc... for whatever reason, one of them will remain as a permanent fixation on my monitor regardless of what i do. Even as i type this: i have a remove bar in the middle of the screen, while i type this.

Hi people,
I hope someone out there can help me because i am well and truly stumped with this problem.
Here is the history

I ordered a brand new pc - Ath 64 X2 4600+ CPU, 1 GB RAM, 400GB SATA, 256MB 7900GT, 19" TFT, 16x DVDRW-DL
Running Mcafee Antivirus / Ad-aware

I originally had problems when my Graphics card wouldn't work. I installed some older versions of the drivers and it was working okay. Then I had some problems with some dll files and i couldn't open Windows due to the system/config error at start up. I managed to repair that installation. THe next day, my PC would not boot and I could not repair it. I then found out, i had bad sectors on the Hard disk so i tried formatting it. It is basically redundant now.

I then put in an old Hard Disk and installed Windows on that drive - working fine for a few days, but i always had small problems with DLL files and different applications closing for no reason.
Then the dreaded blue screen came -
stop: c000021a {fatal system error} the windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x000026c.

I then used a Memory check and that was fine. I checked the disk using chkdsk - fine. I then installed Windows from scratch, formatting the disk in the process and when it is copying the files - it says that some of the files cannot be copied. I press esc and because there is about 50 files missing, it doesnt install Windows properly. NOW THIS IS THE SAME DISC THAT WORKED A WEEK EARLIER... Read more

Good day, good people. My windows 10 left click menu doesn't bring up the menu tray anymore since after I shut down my system using the alt+f4 combination keys. Likewise, neither the running apps tray nor the network one opens up on left click. I also cannot multitask anymore as I can only open one folder, seeing as the non functionality of the left click options limits my ability to. I've had these exact issues before which forced me to reinstall the OS from scratch. But I can't always install the software as it requires time and some backing up. Please anyone who knows a way around this should help with a guide. Thanks in advance!

Hi folks - just getting started here and really need some help. I bought a refurbished PC (Dell) in May and have been having problems with Windows 10 functionality since. Here are two issues I would love to get an answer for:
1. Using the Shift + Left Mouse button ALWAYS selected a large group of text in Windows XP. Place the selection point at the start of the text and then use Shift + Left Mouse button and presto: large group of text is selected. It does not work for me in Windows 10. I have to use the Left Mouse drag format and its a real drag. Is there a dialog box I can access where I can change a default setting so that it does work?
2. Folders - I cannot get them to remember their last setting. Open up one folder and the next one you open is in the same size and almost the same position as the last one opened. Close the folder and it doesn't remember its position and size.
I guess I am asking the obvious but ... why does Microsoft always tend to screw things up? Why take away (by default) the two of the things that we have gotten so used to in Windows?
My other pet peeve is the file overwrite confirmation dialog showing up BEHIND folders and programs on the desktop.
I mean, who was beta testing this OS and why wasnt this vehemently contested before the OS was released? I know that thousands of people beta tested this product. Was MS turning a deaf ear to their comments or did folks just accept these changes?
Hope you can help me out ....

Hi,

I have a problem with my laptop that started a few hours ago. I was using it as usual but then it crashed/froze and I was forced to do a hard restart. I'd been having problems with it a few weeks back but managed to sort those issues out (constant freezes) - I mention this in case it's relevant. I have Avast Antivirus and Spybot installed and run weekly scans with both. Anyway, after doing the hard restart, my computer started acting strangely. Usually it would say that windows wasn't shut down properly and give me the option to reboot in safe mode but it doesn't let me. I eventually get to my desktop picture but no log-in screen ever loads and my computer just gets stuck here. Doing a hard restart (and weirdly, I only have to touch the power button instead of holding it for about 5 seconds like usual) powers down the computer, I restart it and get the same problem again.

I've already tried a few things, namely pulling the battery and the charger cable. I've also downloaded Kaspersky Recovery 10 Disc (at the recommendation of someone else) but it didn't work. When the computer is booting up, I've tried the F8 thing but that didn't work either. I'm a computer noob so I have no idea what to do now. I'm hoping my laptop isn't dead because I seriously have no money right now so any advice you guys and gals can give to resurrect my expensive brick would be very welcome! I don't want to lose any files because, while I do have a backup that's a few months old, my h... Read more

Question: Missing options

Hello, I have a Compaq notebook and I just recently got the upgrade to 32 7. My friend has a beta version, also 32 bit, and he has options that I do not. On his taskbar when he hovers over a compressed button/folder it will show displays of them. Secondly, when going to personalization to window color, it automatically goes to the advanced version and i cant make it transparent or anything.

Any help? Anything else I may be missing?

I just did a normal restart of Windows 10 Pro 64, FCU, and all my screen icons were arranged in some random order on the left
side of the screen, with each column of icons going from the top to the bottom of the window. I have had this same problem before, but usually when I system locked up and I had to force a shutdown or do a complete power button reset.

What does Windows reset my desktop icons? And more importantly, is there any REG setting that can prevent this problem from happening again. it's very frustrating when this happens , and I can never get all the icons to their same positions as before.

x509

Answer:screen icons scrambled to random sort on left side of screen

I don't know a solution to that problem, but maybe a suggestion is to make the Desktop simpler for you to use. I don't know how many icons you have on there, but I have everything organized on my Desktop, so if an error like that occurs, I wouldn't have too much of a hassle by rearranging everything back to the way it was.

Sorry, this is not a fix for that error, only a suggestion to prevent the error from being too troublesome.

As you can see in the screen shot, I have in the first column, I have The Computer itself, the main icon. Then after that, My important files and folders in My Stuff. Then the Recycle Bin which has a parody of a name which still makes sense, the place where the computer can Recycle Binary. After that is the Downloads from the internet folder, so I don't cram the Desktop from downloading straight to the Desktop. And after that, Projects that I do on the computer.
Column number 2 has all the icons programs sorted in those three folders
Column number 3 is just other programs.
Column 4 has a folder named Games and shortcuts to the games are in there.
Column 5 is a shortcut to Windows Update, so I can double click it and see what updates the computer has done, etc..

There's an extra file there on the Desktop, but no worries, I'm working with that file at the moment.

Hi guys! On my new TPY the touch screen on the left hand side (the side where the charger is connected) is unresponsive. The pen however works perfectly fine. I have already run the lenovo software update tool and updated/installed all the drivers so I wonder what might be the culprit here...? Best,Chris

Answer:Thinkpad Yoga - touch screen on left half of the screen unresponsive

if the left hand screen touch is unresponsive, then it is a hardware problem. You would need to send in for service.

When I turn on my computer all I get is a black screen with the flashing cursor up in the left corner of the screen. Any ideas as to how to correct this? I have a Dell from he'll computer-- inspiron E1505 about 8 years old and just had windows 7 home edition installed on it

Answer:Black screen with flashing cursor in upper left corner of screen

Hey I just went through something very similar. I found that my SATA cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard had failed. I replaced it with a new SATA cable, and it booted right up. Try the cable first if you have one lying around, plus its a cheap solution. If you replace the cable and it still won't boot up, it might be your hard drive. Seeing as how your machine is that old, it could fail at any time.

Do you get anything on the screen when you turn it on?

Hi,I'm running Windows 10 with the latest updates. I have Synaptic Driver v19.0.12.112. When I'm using the touchpad, not all of the left clicks are registered consistently and every so often, it misses one. If i 'tap' the touchpad instead of 'clicking', then this works fine. I've tried different driver versions and even removed all Synaptic drivers, leaving just the basic windows driver (from 2006!). Using the basic Windows driver fixes the problem but then I lose all touch pad controls, such as two finger scroll. If changing the driver fixes the issue, it would therefore indicate to me that this is a driver issue but I've not yet found a Synaptics driver (or equivalent) which resolves this issue and maintains the rest of the touch pad controls. I've seen a few topics on this matter and some discuss plugging the laptop in versus running on battery but that doesn't make a different in my experience and is not a good enough compromise anyway. Please advise which driver will fix this issue?  HP - I've tried to go through your "contact us" support desk and it just takes me through a loop of questions but never actually submits the issue. Thanks,

Hey,

My start menu panel doesn't show recently used applications at all, despites it's turned on at properties. Not even will it show the default browser and email client as the first two rows while I have them set.
What could be the problem?
I think there's some kind of registry workaround that would do the trick.
Anyone could help?

I've attached a screenshot (in Hungarian, I have Hungarian version of Windows XP SP3).

Thanks

Answer:Start menu left-sidebar missing

Hello stringZ

I think it might be a corrupted profile

Follow the instructions here on how to create a new profile and copy over all your files etc to the new profile

Please be sure to copy your email account over too before deleting the old profile

Hey guys I just fixed a CRAZY virus (I think its a virus) I had that changed my userinit.exe files and I fixed it by replacing these files using my friends userinit.exe files . Now I'm getting a blue screen with an error that reads:

STOP: 0x0000007E (0x0000005, 0xF7547756, 0xF78A242c, 0xF78A2128)

Also it says something about BIOS to either upgrade it or disable conflicting components.

About the "Virus/Trojan or something":

Just so you know:

1) I downloaded this file <http://isohunt.com/torrent_details/71813493/ip?tab=summary> (if anyone is brave enough to download it and see if their antivirus detects it because I don't have an antivirus so I still don't know the name for this... I guess its a virus or trojan) when I double clicked the file "iphider37se.exe 4.2 MB" it automatically installed a "Windowspcdefender" and started scanning. It looked like a really fake virus scanner so when I click X to close it I got a blue screen and was forced to restart my pc.

2) Then the problem was that windows would load to the Welcome screen and I clicked on my user account to log in (no password required)

3) Then my desktop would appear AS IF it was ready to load up but then it would automatically go back to the Welcome screen.

4) This happened even in Safe Mode so I had to put my drive as a slave drive on ANOTHER PC.

5) It took me HOURS to somehow figure out the userinit.exe files may have gotten corrupt or rewritten by this... Read more

My desktop settings are as such:
View --> Small icons, align icons to grid, show desktop icons
I have 2 rows of icons (shortcuts and stuff) on the left
and 2 rows of icons on the right.
The ones on the left are perfect, the ones closest to the edge, have about 1/4 inch of space to the edge of the screen
However, the ones on the right have about an inch and I can't place them closer unless I do all manually, which I don't want to do since they will all be crooked, not does the option seem to exist.
I would like the right side to 'kiss' the edge as they do on the left. Is this possible or not? If not, why pls? Thank you

Answer:Desktop icons not equal on left of screen compared to right of screen

pintree go to the desktop > right click anywhere on the screen > View > untick Align icons to grid

It does take some positioning though I don't think the OS will put it exactly on the right edge you will have to do it manually.

I am experiencing a same issue as one in a previous thread dated in 2008 thread #699956. Missing internet options in control panel...I experience many difficulties w/ IE 8 running XP Home Edition. Obviously with internet options missing, I cannot tweak anything, missing toolbars, unable to download and upgrade software off the internet in most cases, etc. When I tried to run inetcpl.cpl nothing happens. The solution in the above mentioned thread was to get the XP CD and extract the file. My pc came preloaded w/ no disk. I have also searched via cmd and file search and located numerous listings of inetcpl.cpl files on my hard drive including system32 folder and servicepackfiles\i386 folder. What are my best options here?

I am working on a customer's computer and have never seen before.
The computer is a brand new gateway with Windows XP Home SP2. I don't know the version of IE or what Service Pack it has installed. Obviously it is 6.x but thats all I know.

When I open Internet Explorer it gives me this error:
Nothing else happens. When I click ok, the screens go away and IE is closed. I figured it was something with the default homepage but when I right click on IE and go to properties or go to internet options in the Control panel, this is what I see:
I checked for spyware with Spybot, Adaware, Microsoft Antispyware and Spysweeper. I also ran Hijackthis and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. It doesn't appear that he has any spyware. I am at a loss here and don't know what the problem could be. I don't want to reload windows if I don't have to. I tried to reinstall IE by right clicking on ie.inf in c:\windows and clicking install. It ran through the install process and copied the files from the xp home cd but it still doesn't work. Firefox works fine but my customer wants his IE fixed. What can I try next?

Hey guys ,

I just bought a sharp Aquos 32" LDC full HD (its beautyfull ) .I mainly bought this to use with my pc . I bought some 180$ dvi to hdmi monster cables hooked em all up and WOW ! Looked awsome.. So i messed around with it for a while changing zoom, stretch, dot to dot ect .Finnaly i got the tv's view mode to normal no stretch and filled all 32" perfectly with my desktop and the resolution was something like 2040x1200 or 1920x1080 not sure exactly..i should have wrote that down but close to that..

Now that i know it worked great i wanted to clean my pc by imaging dells factory ghost .
That flew without a hitch, but now i cannot for the life of me figure out why i cant get my tv to have the correct resolution as i did before the reset . In the display options in the settings tab the tv's screen res only goes up to 1360x768 .I noticed on my secondary monitor (my original 17"crapbox) that its res could go way higher like giant size having to scroll across the screen to see your start button res .So i try boosting the res on the 17 " and the monitor flickers off and says out of range.. So i changed the nview settings to clone instead of dualview thinking if one monitor doesnt take the high res the other will ..It worked but being in clone view im not getting 16:9 res settings ..So i try to set the lcd as the primary and the res went back to 1360x768... so then i said ok lets just use non 16:9 settings and try to set the res so it fits at le... Read more

Answer:Missing Resolution options

OK seems that it was all a driver issue... I dont know why dells drivers dont include support for wide screen hd video and i dont remember downloading any updates before i did the factory update... anyways... I have another weird problem , maybe its not a problem but it seems like it is..

In my advanced video settings in preformance and quallity settings
i have the antialiasing settings . Now as i can remember i was always able to set this to "application controlled" and was also able to manually set it.. now If i check the box next to application controlled and press apply the check doesnt stay and it simply sets antialiasing to off .. I dont get it, cause now every game i play i feel i have to set the antialiasing accordingly manually .
Another thing after resetting to factory. When i right click on the desktop it doesnt respond right away it takes a few seconds then opens my desktop properties...Usually it was always super fast.. Its probably me being extreemly picky.. but who knows..

thanks for your time !

I'm missing some buttons and options from my display settings, and I have no idea why. Back story: I tried switching my video card drivers (going from omega drivers to ATI's new Catalyst suite), so I uninstalled my omega drivers, rebooted, and the ATI installer couldn't complete its installation. I downloaded and installed the new .NET Framework 3.0 because that was one of the problems it listed, but that didn't help any. I still had this problem:

"Setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup."

Tried it a few more times with just driver and no control center, older versions I had - nothing worked. I used the catalyst uninstaller to get rid of what it had stored on my comp, then reinstalled my omega drivers - no problem with them. So out of curiosity I go through my Windows' display settings in the advanced area, and I notice I'm missing a lot of stuff I know was there before. On the Adapter tab there is now NO info in the Adapter Information box; on the Monitor tab it no longer lists my monitor in the Monitor Type box, the properties tab is grayed out, and in the Monitor Settings box I can no longer select a screen refresh rate; all it has is "Use hardware default setting." And of course, I'm missing all the tabs I used to have for my video card's settings and options. Any help as to how I can get my Windows' display options back and how to get it to re-recog... Read more

Answer:Missing Display Options

Solved my own problem this afternoon. It seems all the back-and-forths with the drivers caused Windows to stop recognizing the hardware for the video card and the monitor as being connected, which is why I wasn't getting any options (it thought there was nothing connected to provide options for). I used the Add Hardware function in the Control Panel to add my card and monitor, loaded the ATI drivers I wanted and restarted - problem solved.

The following are missing from the Send To menu :

Compressed (zipped) folder, Documents.mydocs, Mail Recipient. The "One file to Mail Recipient" is something I added since I have had the problem and it allows me to send one file to a mail recipient, not several files that the missing Mail Recipient option used to do.

I am using Windows 7 Pro with SP1, Email client is Thunderbird ver 31.3.0 and it is set as the default email client. I have tried re-installing T/bird but as I suspected (since other options are absent) it did not restore the missing options. I have also tried copying the options from the "default" send to folder and also writing new files in my send to folder, without success. I do not see the missing send to options when I press Shift before selecting a file either. I suspect the problem lies in the registry - it is clearly a problem with not just the Send To > Mail recipent link. I have used Ccleaner to "clean" the registry in the past. I have had this problem for a while now and I cannot roll back the system to a time when it worked. Any help or suggestions would be welcome.

I apparently have Fast Startup enabled after upgrading to Win10. I would like to turn it off so I am not automatically logged on when I power up. (We don't have the IDs password protected on this desktop PC.) There are very simple instructions given in a TenForums tutorial, but my Power Options don't match what is shown in the tutorial. In particular, under Shutdown Settings I have only Sleep and Lock - no "Turn on fast startup"; no "Hibernate". Since this is a desktop there is also no "On battery" options, but that is obviously not a concern. But is the option of turning on and off Hibernate available only on laptops? That doesn't make sense.

Answer:Missing power options

Hello pokeefe,

I'm afraid that you will need to add passwords to all of your accounts to stop the last account from automatically being signed in to at startup.

Correct, a desktop wouldn't have an "On battery" option unless you had a UPS connected.

Turn on fast startup and Hibernate would not be available in "Shutdown settings" unless hibernate is enabled.

Hello all. I just built my computer, and installed a copy of Windows XP I..."acquired", with service pack 3 slipped into it. Everything works fine, but a few folder options seem to be missing. Firstly, the "Common tasks" sidebar is gone. I've looked online, and all the sites say to just check the check box under tools. Well, it's checked, there's just no sidebar. Secondly, I'm missing a bunch of the folder radio buttons in the view panel. Lastly, when I'm going through My Pictures, and have Filmstrip view on, I don't get a large preview image, just small thumbs. Thanks in advance!

Have you recently run any Registry Cleaners and/or Tweaking Utilities? These things cause more problems than they claim to fix...

Regardless of how this happened, have you tried using System Restore to go back to a point before this problem started?

hi all,

one of my office pc is missing 'folder options' on tools dropdown menu on explorer bar, can anyone help me in restoring this? it runs on XP (non SP)

thanks in advance

Answer:folder options missing

Hello,

It's likely been disabled in the registry. Follow the these instructions to re-enable folder options: Disable Folder Options Menu at Registry Guide for Windows .

Note: You should also be able to access 'Folder Options' in the control panel. Though, this option may also be removed if folder options is disabled in the registry.

I've recently purchased an HP PC with XP Home pre-installed. After experiencing some set up problems with my non-XP approved DSL modem I was told that there should be an 'Application Restore' option. As this was not available I had to do a complete system restore and lost all of my data in the process. I had no choice but to follow this route as both HP and my ISP were unable to resolve the issues. I wass advised that my Modem manufacturer, Fujitsu, does not provide XP certified installation disks. The only way to solve this conflict if upgrading to XP is to download the updated XP drivers from 'http//click here' then uninstall the Modem software the re-install.Hope this help.

hello Window Gods lol...

Ok I Have a problem That I cant seem to shake.
When I right click on desktop and go to personalize, I am missing screen saver, set back ground and windows dream screen. I am not sure what I did but it would be cool if I could get them back I have tried everything I could think of.

Also if i try to set a screen saver by going to control panel it tells me that the administrator has disabled the display control panel ??? I have done no such thing I think. but I can set a desktop background by right clicking on an pic file and telling it to apply as desktop back ground.

Thanks SLoPpy

Answer:personalize options missing

Hello SLoPpy, and welcome to Vista Forums.

This sounds like the work of malware. I would strongly recommend running a very thorough antivirus and spyware (ex: Spybot Search & Destroy) scan to help clean your computer.

You might see if a System Restore using a restore point dated before this problem can restore your computer back to normal. I would then run another scan afterwards to be extra safe.

If a System Restore does not help, then these tutorials can:

Enable Control Panel:
Control Panel - Enable or Disable

Enable Desktop Background:
NOTE: You should be able to change back to a DreamScene afterwards.
Desktop Background Wallpaper - Prevent Change

Enable Screen Saver:
Screen Saver - Add or Remove Option

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi there,

i am new to this forum and I registered because I hope that you can help me with a problem. I just reinstalled Windows XP (SP2 with IE7) and unfortunately my CD has some problems because the installer could not install 2 or 3 files. I just skipped them and Windows is running fine except from one problem in the wireless LAN configuration: I can delete networks but I cannot edit them nor can I add a new one. Nothing happens when I push one of those 2 buttons (add or delete network).
Maybe it is just a missing *.dll file, I have no idea, but I would really appreciate any help.
Thx in advance!

Last night my friend turned my home computer off using the power button on the located on the tower because he was frustrated that Fireworks wasn't opening properly. Usually the computer will go to a blue screen saying something like "Scanning drive C:" I usually can skip right over it because it give u the option to by clicking any bottom. Well first it would only get to 74% and either just freeze the computer, or freeze than restart its self. Going thru the process all over again.I use to be able to get into Safe mode, and i could see that all my files are still intact. But for some reason, now when ever I turn the computer on. It doesn't go to the "Scanning drive C:" screen anymore . . . instead it goes to a black screen saying"NTLDR is missing"I now cannot access safe mode, so I press F11 to start recovery from the hardrive. I try to reinstall the OS with a back up, but always at 2% into copying the files, the whole computer freezes. Forceing me to restart the computer in order to continue with anything else. . . Next option was to take my operating CD and try reinstalling the OS with that. But yet again it stops at 2% and the only option is to restart the computer again, using the power button on the computer tower.I have 2 hardrives attached to the computer, and on booting up the computer I began to notice that one of my hardrives (most likely the C: drive with the operating system) has a Errors. . . Running Win7 and certain programs do not display options. For example... if I run msconfig.... it pops up but there's nothing there... just a blank GUI... If I try to install a program... the install wizard pops up... but it's just a blank GUI... same with Task Manager. I can run CMD though. I tried to run a Outlook export and the export wizard is also just a blank GUI. And then in Chrome when I try to browse websites it's like 90% of the CSS doesn't work. I think I might have a virus but Kaspersky couldn't find any issues... I also tried some online scanners. I want to install some more serious software but I can't get through the wizards because the options don't exist. Anyone know what this virus is???Thanks!

Good morning - I would love some help with my latest problem.I used to be able to right click a folder, and from the drop-down menu, select a spyware programme and scan that folder. But I now find that "A-Squared free" and "IObit Security 360" are missing from the sub menu.My other spyware programmes are there, the two missing programmes still work normally. Can someone explain to me how I get these two programmes back onto my sub menu.Thank you for your time - Ian

Answer:Some "right click" options missing

You could try re-installing them or try ShellExView click here I normally use that for removing items from context menus but it might work for putting them back. With ShellExView if you sort by type and then look for Conext Menu, double clicking then gives various options.

Another problem (at least it's totally inconcistent from one install to the next)...

On the primary Windows Update screen, there is a "navigation pane" on the lefthand side (sidebar). From the primary WU screen, when I click on the righthand area "xxx important updates are available", it takes me to the screen showing all the updates that I am allowed to download. However, the navigation pane (left/sidebar) is GONE now. On my prior install, that navigation pane was there on EVERY suboption/subapplet of Windows Update. Currently, that navigation pane/sidebar is only there on the primary WU screen.

Hello.
Recently my Windows has been updating on my Toshiba Satellite computer. It updated itself about three times in the last two weeks, which is annoying enough with all the restarts it had to do. The real problem: I no longer have a power button on my taskbar.

Fair enough, I assume this probably has to do with the updates (I have not messed around with any settings or anything of influence, other than surfing the internet and working with some word processors, since I last saw the button, which was at least on last Friday, but I haven't looked so I can't say if its been sooner). I look up some possible solutions, and it says that I need to go in settings and turn on the system icons (and system icon for power).

It's not an option to change, all grayed out. Now what? I have read that I need to try to reinstall the battery driver or restart it (& the computer) but I will try that later when I am not in class, though I am not sure it will work.
Additionally, in the 'Select Which Items Appear in the Taskbar' is shows that power is selected, however there is no actual icon, and it says it's at 100% (full power), when it is most definitely not (Its not plugged in and Ive been using it for about an hour, Im guessing it has about 90-95% power left).

Any suggestions? Or further info needed? Thank you,
-Sable S.

Edit: The power icon & plugged in/not plugged in status DOES appear in the login/start screen

When I had problems with Mozilla Firefox, I changed to Internet Explorer as my default browser. however, the various tasks such as File, Edit, View, Tool, Help and others is missing. Now I can't even find a place to click so I can print. Also I have to hit my cursor to the top edge of the screen before I'll be able to see the rest off the tool bars. Anything can be done about this? Thanks.
