I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:Think Pad X230 HDD Detection Error 2100

I had this with a Crucial M5M mSATA SSD, and the solution was to turn the machine off for 20 minutes with no battery and and no power connected, then try again. The drive failed totally about 2 weeks later though.

I got the dreaded 2100 error a few days ago on my X230 with a Samsung SSD.While I managed to solve it in a somewhat unexpected way, I wanted to document the process here as I am almost certain it was the result of a bug in the laptop firmware/BIOS. If any Lenovo representatives are reading along I'd appreciate your comments.Long story short: Power on laptop, observe 2100 error. Reboot, press Enter to interrupt start-up, then F12 to select boot device. Hard drive appears in list, despite it not being detected a few seconds earlier. Sigh of relief. Select hard drive, boot up. Problem solved.Details: System configuration is X230 ThinkPad (BIOS version 2.57) with a Samsung 840 EVO SSD (model MZ-7TE1T0BW), Windows 8.1. Before someone points it out, I am aware there's a BIOS version 2.58 available, but from the readme file it doesn't appear to have any fixes for this. The trouble started when I had just powered on the laptop from stand-by, and was setting up a WiDi connection to my TV. The laptop froze hard - no activity whatsoever, couldn't move the mouse pointer, no response to Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Kept the power button pressed until the laptop switched off. Then got a "2100: Detection error on HDD0" message when I tried to boot it again. My first concern was trying to salvage as much data as possible, so I removed the SSD and connected it to a different machine using a SATA-USB adapter. The SSD appeared to be in perfect condition, and I was able to copy all of my data off of it.Popped... Read more

I have a new Lenovo X240 out of the box.  I immediately upgraded with a Crucial M500 SSD 240mb drive.  The computer is running a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit. The BIOS on the laptop is the most current.  The firmware on the M500 is the most current.  It seems that every several times I start or reboot the system I receive "DETECTION ERROR 2100".  After powering off the machine and powering it on again the computer will boot to Winddows. I have seen numerous posts about this issue between Crucial vs. Lenovo.  I've tried every suggested fix to no avail.  I have tried the configuration using an identical, brand new M500 SSD with the same results.  Am I missing something? Thanks in advance for your suggestions,.

Hello everyone,
One fine evening while watching a movie, my laptop stopped responding and in frustration I switched off the laptop by holding the power button long enough to turn off. Next Morning it showed a blue screen and a message to recover my windows, which I failed to do and by the afternoon this message showed up. Detection Error on HDD0 (main HDD) and hence forth I've been unable to install windows from a USB drive since ( and I suppose) it is not able to read my HDD. I do not care about my data at all, I just want my laptop up and running. If I can have the data back it will be perfect otherwise I don't mind not getting my data back. I know for a fact that my Hard disk is fine because I went into command prompt, diskpart , and list disk, and saw the status of HDD as healthy, this is after the error (detection error on HDD). SO my question is: Why this error? IS there a problem in the motherboard? Why the error shows once and then doesn't show the next time and then comes up again.

Answer:2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD); Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga

The error might be bad sectors, but I'm not sure. if my guessing is correct, you might have to get a new drive to replace. also you need to reinstall OS

i have upgraded  X230 harddrive and installed OS from Backup, my fingerprint did work fine after upgrade for 3 month after that fingerprint just started giving error  E7210005 (cannot enrolluser, cannot update passport, cannot find finger print sensor), but in the device mananger panel it show that it is workng properly, when i open biometrics in control panel it shows that my device is not availabe.(i have also allowed fingerprint port in the bios). i reinstalled windows, update finger print drivers and software (from lenovo and also tried the ones from original manufacture-Authen tech). i tried to change the group policy setting, and also created new user wit admin privillages and also enabled all the sevice settings. but the problem error remains the same, it has been a moth now trying to search for solution but still nothing has come up. wat worries me is that the device manger shows that the FP device is working properly

Answer:Lenovo X230 FingerPrint Error

If you re-installed Windows and this problem still happens, I'd say there's a strong possibility that your fingerprint sensor has failed and needs to be replaced.  Even if the device looks OK in Device Manager, this really doesn't mean much.  All it means is that Windows can talk to the USB device that hosts the fingerprint sensor, but the fingerprint sensor itself could still be malfunctioning.

Some things that can help confirm hardware problem:
1.  Shut the system off, does fingerprint green LED flash slowly?  If so it means that the sensor contains some fingerprint templates so lets try to clear them.
2.  Turn the system on and press F1 to enter BIOS setup
3.  Go to the Security menu and choose Fingerprint, then clear the fingerprint sensor.  You should see a message about success or failure.  Failure definitely means HW problem.
4.  If you see a message about success clearing the fingerprint sensor from BIOS, then shut the system off again.  The green LED should not be flashing anymore because you cleared the sensor in BIOS.  If the green LED still flashes, then it means HW problem because the fingerprint templates were not really cleared.

So try the above steps to try to confirm the HW problem, or just call service in your country and request help.

Hi everyone, hope you can help me out with this issue I am having.  I bought a new X230 a couple weeks ago along with the additional 6 cell slice battery. However, I have been having a problem.  When the slice battery runs out the system won't go into sleep; instead when I close the lid on the laptop it turns off completely and when I reboot it all of the programs / app have closed.  It's like the system has a hard power off when that happens. When I reboot, I get this message that says: "Battery 2: There is an error."  Clicking on the replacement options links goes to a 404 page.  (Thanks Lenovo!)  http://screencast.com/t/LLlmqaQ1NJ5k Looking in the Lenovo Solution Center in these cases the secondary battery is listed as "not available".  http://screencast.com/t/PlYdomKZU Anything I should try or should I be getting a new battery from Lenovo?  Is this a common problem?

Answer:Lenovo X230 Slice battery error and problems

Hey there!

Can you tell us what model (machine type) of X230 do you have and what operating system it is running? The machine type can be found on a sticker on the bottom of the unit. This will help me assit you with the errors you are recieving.

Also, have you checked your power manager settings? It is possible to have a PM setting to turn the laptop off when the lid is closed and/or when the slice battery dies.

I've seen this error message and solutions for other models, but none of the fixes seems to apply or work for the ThinkPad.I get this error at Start Up and can't load Windows. I've reseated the hard drive. BIOS Start up settings are: Network boot:  PCI LANUEFI/Legacy Boot: Both   -UEFI/Legacy Boot Priority Legacy First   -CSM support: YESBoot Mode: QuickOption Key Display: EnabledBoot Device List F12 Option: EnabledBoot Order Lock: DisabledAny ideas? I can't get it to load to windows and it won't let me reimage either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Error: pxe-e61 media test failure lenovo x230 table

Good day and welcome to the community.

Sorry you're having difficulty.
Unless you're actually trying to PXE boot to a network, the error you're seeing often denotes a problem with your HDD (or SSD if so equipped). Essentially, the BIOS doesn't see the drive and steps through the boot device list until it gets to the PC LAN and tries that.

If you look at the StartUp tab of your BIOS and expand the Boot item (1st image below), do you see any identifier for your HDD (similar to #5 in the 2nd image below)?

Regards.

Hi guys. I have recently purchased 2 SSD drives - 1x64gb & 1x128gb. I have the 64gb hooked up to the home pc and is running as the C:\ system drive. I wanted to hook up the 128gb drive to my notebook, but I keep getting an initialisation error (2100) - I have tried AHCI and Compatibility Mode, as well as look up various firmware upgrades and hdd firmware upgrade options via Lenovo. I was just curious if anyone has had problems with this on there system, and if so, how did you overcome it. I have tried both drives on my notebook, both providing the same error, but both work on the desktop system. I have a strong feeling it is to do with a firmware upgrade through Lenovo (ibm), as I have the most recent upgrade which is already a few months old... Hope to hear something good soon... Thnx guys in advance.

Answer:SSD Patriot Warp V2 64gb & 128gb & Lenovo T61P - error 2100 hard disk failed initialisation

Hello everyone. Had the same problem Yesterday. Tried several times without luck. Then I read another thread on the Internet regarding this. It stated that there is a little inconsistency between the SSD SATA plug and the recieving plug in the laptop. I removed the IBM Disk bezel and put the 2 rubber guards directly on the disk and slipped it in. BEFORE this, I have put the SSD in an external USB HD Case and via Windows Diskmanager, deleted the partition on the drive. After putting it back in as described above it WORKED :-))) Please write back if anybody tries this and it works for them BR Jakob

You can do two things: 1. Go to Windows Anytime Upgrade and purchase the Pro feature. This is the easiest way to upgrade, but it costs a small amount to do this. 2. Try booting from the Windows 7 DVD and see if it will let you start it and install the upgrade. You will need the license key from the Windows 7 DVD to do this. ... JDH

When I try to boot my W520, I get a BIOS boot up error : "2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)". I am using PNY XLR8 240GB SSD. It worked fine for a month. I also have PGP installed and whole disc encrypted. I installed an update of Intel Management Engine Firmware and Intel Chipset, both are the latest from lenovo site because I was experiencing expreme slowness from my harddrive. Programs would freeze. Webpages would take forever to load..The next time I rebooted, I got the error. If I leave the SSD out for a bit, and put the SSD back in, the disk will work for some time... but on next reboot, it is again detection error.. TRIM is enabled on my system. I am not sure how the SSD died so quickly. I am back to using my HDD but I am not happy. I want a solution... is this a intel chipset issue? Intel IMEI issue? Is  the PNY SSD just a bad model? I've googled plenty and dont really see a solution. Sometimes there is a firmware update.. PNY has no firmware updates for my drive.. I don't see anybody else using PNY on their W520, but plenty of people are experiencing Error 2100 with SSD on their W520.. somethings fishy.. help please! thanks in advance !

Answer:W520: PNY XLR8 240GB SSD with error "2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)"

Hello,
I don't have a ThinkPad W520 or a PNY SSD, but could it be simply that the SSD is coming loose inside the ThinkPad's chassis?  I suppose this could occur if a 7mm high SSD was inserted into a 9.5mm high 2.5" drive bay with a ~2mm spacer to "pad" the unused vertical space.

Hallo.
I have a failed HDD.
In the past I have usually been able to help myself to at least retrieve any data from the HDD.
But this time the problem seems to be different. If it has any bearing, this is the first time since upgrading to Windows 7 and operating for I can't remember how long, since without any issues.
As I always have in the past, this HDD is formatted with a separate partitions (1) for the OS and program files, and (2) for my data. This has usually this been enough to retrieve my data by installing the drive in a second Thinkpad using a second HDD adapter and retrieving the data. These days I also keep most of my data on a NAS but I do have some folders on a D:\ or Data drive which I would like to retrieve.

This time however I cannot even 'see' the drive at all. Not when I try to boot from it, or as a second HDD using an adapter. It is not even visible under Disk Management in case it needed to be initialized (again?) So this time, I seem stuck, unable to help myself:

In the first instance, I get the Error 2100: HDD0 (Hard Disk Drive) initialization error (2) when booting from the drive.
When I press ESC to continue, the computer tries to initialize the HDD or something, and from memory, I think displays an 'unable to boot from any device' screen and shows the status for the devices without any operating systems.

When I try the same with the affected HDD but this time with an installation disc inserted, I do not see the 'Press any key to boot from CD or DV... Read more

I've had my T430 for about a year, and other than two Corsair RAM sticks failing my computer has been running smoothly. Last night, my computer suddenly froze up and now it won't recognize my SSD. I'm currently using my stock HDD, but now I can't access any of the data on my SSD. I've tried running the SSD firmware update from the Lenovo site, but it wouldn't show my SSD under the memory devices (I'm not sure if this particular SSD is supported by the firmware update either). I don't think lenovo customer support would help in this situation, since my stock HDD runs fine and I didn't buy the SSD from them, so any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I have a month old T440s. It has the original 256GB SSD drive (didn't open\replace anything). After uninstalling some antivirus software win8 had problems booting. To make a long story short, I tried different things to fix the MBR and eventually got to the point of trying to do a full factory restore, which didn't work (it couldn't find the recovery partition). When I boot up now, I get the "2100: Detection Error on HDD0 (Main HDD)" error.Aside from trying to restore using Lenovo CD (shipped to me, will be here in a couple of days), what else cn be done and what caused this ordeal? I don't mind about the data on the SSD, I just really need my laptop functioning ASAP. Thanks for any advise you may have!

Hello! First post on this forum but been browsing for some time. My machine: ThinkPad S430, type-model: 3364-5HG, Win 7 x64, 500 GB HGST HDD. My problem is notably similiar to this one: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht082504.The problem occurs on very irregular basis, at times a couple of times a day but other times it goes weeks between the interrupts. It starts with some sort of short mechanical sound from the HDD, similar to the one when you turn the laptop of by pressing and holding the power button (only do this if I absolutely have to, it feels like choking someone with a pillow). After the sound, the screen freezes for a couple of seconds before the short bluescreen mentioned in the link occurs. The rest is as follows by the link above. Basically the only difference is the HDD brand (HGST in my S430 and Samsung in the link). After reboot (with power button during the automated reboot after bluescreen when the error code occurs), the laptop works fine.  It's getting quite annoying when this happens and also the suspension of not knowing when it will happen next is not good for my heart. What to do? Thanks in advance! Regards,Nicholas

I have an issue with a Lenovo X1 Carbon Touch Windows 8. It has a 512GB SSD. (Believe its Samsung)  Earlier today the computer frooze while saying plug in your charger, so I had to hold down the power button to do a forced shutdown. Upon turning it back on I got this error after hanging on the Lenovo logo for a good five minutes. Error: 2100: Detection error on SSD0 (M.2) The SSD is not visible anywhere not in BIOS or anywhere else. I've tried reseating it however it doesn't help. The BIOS is upto date, any I'm unable to update the SSD Firmware as I cannot get onto Windows as per the instrutions here - http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht082504 1. I cant update firmware for the SSD as I cant get onto Windows2. The BIOS firmware is the latest 3. I've taken the SSD out and put it back in4. Reset BIOS settings5. Disconnected Battery and left it for an hour I'm panicing as all my data is on there, I assumed it was safe as it's SSD.  Please can anyone assist?

Answer:X1 Carbon - SSD Failure? Error 2100: Detection error on SSD0 (M.2)

Sorry for a 2500 GBP laptop I'd expect better really. This is the SECOND X1 Carbon I've had out of 4 to fail me with the SSD. I've lost all my data (Yes I know I should have backed it up) that I'll never be able to recover. Ultimately I've given up on the brand of Lenovo, my company who supplies exclusively Lenovo hardware to our customers are now switching to Dell as a direct result of the lack of support and poor hardware/firmware design. Just ordered 2X Dell XPS 13's as a replacement for my less than 6 month old Lenovo X1 Carbon, never thought it would come to this but the lack of support, knowledge and consitant hardware failures has left me no choice, I can't operate or do my work on an Lenovo X1 Carbon, fingers crossed the Dell will be better as it cant get any worse than Lenovo. To anyone who has Google'd the error and found this thread some cold facts; According to my resources this error can be caused if the system is not shutdown, BSOD or sudden power loss. If it doesn't resolve itself, there is a good chance it wont. Cycle the computer numrous times, let the battery run flat. Try it a few more times. Reset the BIOS, Update the BIOS. Prevention is better than cure, supposedly updating the SSD Firmware might have prevented this from happening in the first place.Lots of reports that this is an issue with BIOS and Firmware issues that result in an early death. I can confirm this having happened twice to me on different generation and model... Read more

Hello,So, first of all, I'm not english, so I'm sorry for the following mistakes.Let's start.1 year ago I've bought a lenovo x230 netbook with Windows 8, intel core i7 + 8 gb ram + SSD. [still using these specs]Okay. After 1 month of usage, the display started to have some problems. From the left to right, the 3/7 part of the display is changing in all the colors while using. It depends on what color is the page opened. If it's white, this part of the display is black with some "running" white lines, if it's blue - red and so on.No problem ; acording to the warranty, the display has been changed. It was ok.Since august 2014 I didn't use the laptop again. I started using it in April 2015. In may, the display started to have that problem again, but I've read on your forum that I need to put the display on 60Hz and on High performance mode to fix it, and that's what I did. At the beggining of June, the problem was back, and it is still on 60Hz and high performance mode.3 days ago, my laptop started to make another problem ; CHARGING.It doesn't want to charge.  If I just plug in, it stays with the battery on 0%, and it doesn't open because of the missing electricity, but I've realised something. If I move the end of the charger [near the part which get into that yellow circle where the end of the charger must be, hope you understand] higher than 10-15 CMs it DOES charge. But now it doesn't charge even if I put it in the position I've said before. I would wan to find out if I can install  mSATA SSD 128gb into the x230 and main harddrive as a storage?

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:Lenovo Think Pad x230 and mSATA SSD

Hi, odessit

This should be possible. There is a slot for an mSATA drive in the X230, as shown here. Also shown in that link is that an mSATA is a user-replaceable part. After purchasing your SSD, then all you will need to do is install it per the instructions here (pp. 70) Also, you will likely need to download this firmware update after installing the drive. This will allow the BIOS to recognize the SSD if you plan to use it as the C: drive of the system. The update can be found here.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Question: Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, everyone,A quick question. I have an x230 on the way and am looking to set up my workspace in a specific way. Here is what I want: an external monitor that will allow me to move the cursor from the laptop screen to the other monitor. So, in essence, a dual monitor set-up but with the laptop screen as one of the monitors. I would also like to be able to use a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse while in this set-up. Do I need the UltraSeries 3 dock, or something else? Thanks!Parker

Answer:Lenovo X230 setup

Hi, Parker

You should be able to accomplish this without a docking station. The X230 supports a dual independent display and has a VGA port and a Mini DisplayPort. So if you have a monitor with one of these connections and hook it up to your laptop, then it should work. You will need to make sure that you Extend the display and not Duplicate it. Duplicate will give you the same image on both screens. You can just use Win + P to set it appropriately.

As for the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, you should have no issues here either. Provided Bluetooth is turned on in the system and you have compatible Bluetooth peripherals, it should work like a charm once they've been paired.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Just did shut down on my lenovo x230. When restarting the PC by pressing the power button, he looks like he is restarting, then nothing happens. Hardware buttons not active, screen is black. Nothing I can do... PC doesn't react to anything. Was working fine before shut down. What is wrong??? What can I do? Help!

Answer:lenovo x230 - Does not boot!!!

fre_madrid,1. unplug power cable and battery, press and hold the power button during 30 sec, plug the battery and cable again, try to boot laptop.2. OR if you are familiar with disassembling of keyboard and palmrest do it, then unplug connector of small yellow battery under palmrest (near FPR) during several minuts. Assemble the laptop and try to boot. If laptop will boot go to BIOS setup, press F9 and save default settings, set and save your settings. If that actions will not resolve the issue I'm afraid you have to contact with Lenovo support.

Dear all, I jsut got a x240 and really liked the QuickConnect app from Lenovo, which works great for my job (I can use my Android phone as a remote presenter, keyboard, etc.). I was wondering if I can install quick connect in my x230. I know that Lenovo says it's only for the x240, but since it connects via Bluetooth, I don't see why it wouldn't work with the X230. Doe anyone have any experience with this? Thank you. R.

Hi All! I'm sorry to sound like a bit of a newb here, but i'm looking for a little bit of assistance with my x230 laptop.  I bought the laptop back in september with windows 7 professional.  A couple months later, I upgraded to windows 8 only to not really like it too much and decide for now I want to revert back to Windows 7.  Not knowing what my options were, I installed Windows 7 Ultimate back on the machine through an external cd drive, but now I'm missing about 100gb from my main drive, I ordered a 500gb 7200 rpm drive but now I only have about 350 GB available after the clean install.  I wasn't too sure how the recovery options on the x230 worked.  I see that next to my main C drive, there is another drive there located "Recovery" It has about 75% of the disk space being taken up but there is absolutely nothing within the actual drive when I actually click it.  It's probably too late, but is there any way to actually take my laptop back to the way it was when I first bought it? I only ask because it seems there's something on that recovery drive but I just can't figure out what it is.  I would appreciate any help at all, I'm sorry for sounding like such a newb with this stuff!

Answer:Lenovo x230 Recovery

Hi, Flyerfan16

If you are viewing your drives in Disk Management, how big is the Recovery partition? The partitions from Lenovo are normally between 7 GB and 10 GB when the machine ships. If the original partition is still on the drive, then you should be able to recover to the settings when the machine was first purchased.

You can attempt recovery by starting the machine as normal and then pressing Enter repeatedly to interrupt startup. A menu should then appear, with an option available to recover your system. Press the associated key for this action and then follow the prompts. If all works well, you should be able to go back to the way it was. If you choose this option, make sure to back up all files that you wish to keep that are currently on the system.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hey everyone!I ordered a x230 a few weeks ago and i realized i need bluetooth! I know i can purchase a dongle for a few dollars but i rather keep my USB ports free.Anyone know where I can purchase a bluetooth card so i can install it myself? - Or is it advised not to do that. What do you think I should do?

Answer:Lenovo x230 missing bluetooth!

2 options come to my mind1) you can look for bluetooth expresscard (x220 has a slot, so I'm guessing x230 has it as well)2) you can put it in mini-PCIe slot (for the WWAN card or mSATA SSD), assuming it's empty now, ie. you purchased without WWAN

I have a Lenovo x230 laptop with an i7 processor that starts the second time. This means that when you first turn on, there is a black screen. The restart must be forced and then normally turns on. I tried to use an external screen, tricks with disconnecting the battery and pressing the switch, CMOS battery, RAM memory replacement - nothing did not succeed. On this motherboard, the service replaced the BIOS chips due to failure in the upgrade. They said that the computer would not work anyway. The computer, however, works, but after the second launch - which is annoying. I have updated the BIOS on my own, which did not solve the problem. Once the computer starts, it works very steadily and without problems. I have not found a similar case anywhere on the internet.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (which I love dearly) and have a few question about ports and booting.  I would first like to verify that the port on the left side of the laptop directly above one of the USB ports is indeed an ExpressCard 54.  I have searched the web, but have yet to find a definite answer, and my user manual simply stated "ExpressCard."  Furthermore, I would like to know if it is possible to boot an operating system from said port using an ExpressCard 34 SSD (64GB).  I have the intention of installing openSUSE 12.3 to the potential SSD and be able to boot from it.  I greatly appreciate any help.  I  would post an image of said port, but I am being told the image file is much too large.

I've bought the Lenovo X230 with the broken battery (the PM showes 68% charging and no more, asks for the battery replacement). I've tried 3 different good-working batteries from X220 which were supposed to work on X230, but they don't. When starting the laptop with that battery, it stops with the information:" The battery installesd is not supported by this system and will not charge. Please replace the battery with the correct Lenovo battery for this system. Press the ESC to continue".  And after pressing the ESC key, it starts to work, but the PM still writes that the battery is not correct and it doesn't charge. What could it be?

Answer:Lenovo x230 battery problem

Hi,x230 doesn't support the batteries of old 29 series (x220 did). Only hw protected batteries 44 series are being supported by x230 (and 19+ series, external).Batteries of 29 series can only be discharged in x230.Try to perform the original (x230's) battery reset using Lenovo power manager feature.

I only have 8GB of RAM so the 16GB problem shouldn't affect me either? Anyone know what might be wrong? When reading some forums I saw that people who updated their BIOS were able to fix their problem as long as they only had 8 gigs of ram, which is why im confused I still have DFA00000. Will it still work regaurdless of this? I thought the update was supposed to fix this.

After placing drive in primary HDD0  was only able to "see" the drive if I set the BIOS sata to "compatibility mode"Drive passed all the BIOS tests while in "compatibility mode" but OS install still does not complete. If BIOS is set to AHCI mode (which is the correct setting for SSD?s) the W510 boots to an error 2100 and does not recognize the drive. Thanks for any help provided!

Answer:error 2100 with SSD

Where is the C300 in the boot list when looking at startup in the BIOS? FYI, my T410s works fine with it's C300 so I have no doubt you can get this resolved.

Nope, there's no limit on the storage size of the SSD, as long as you buy a 2.5" model any size should work.
I have no experience with Amazon, but if you stick to the usual brands like Samsung Pro, Kingston HyperX, Toshiba, Sandisk and so on you should have no issues. Currently the best price per GB is in the 240GB/256GB range.

Happy hunting!

I have a Lenovo X230, running Kubuntu 14.04. When I disconnect the slice battery at the bottom the system resets, it's very annoying. What's worse is that it seems like jostling the system, also can cause it to power cycle. I don't really have a need to remove the slice battery very often, but essentially if I put the laptop into standby, and put it in by laptop knapsack, the system is off after I get where I'm going. Thoughts? I saw somewhere that allegedly, when you unlock the battery, some thinkpad utility gets notified to switch the power, I wonder if the hotplug is a software only solution, and not doable in standby. Steve Ramage

Description of problem: at some point when playing audio, sound will cut out. The levels will still be moving on the mixer, but no sound will come through the speakers or sound jack. It seems that soon after I've closed all sound-producing applications, sound returns. I am 50-75% sure that this is strictly a sound jack issue, as I don't remember being able to reproduce the issue without the sound jack being active when the audio drops out. Frequently, bumping my headphones' cord seems to cause the problem, but other times, the problem seems to happen on a click, a loud sound, or seemingly nothing at all.

I am unsure of how to reliably reproduce the problem, so it is difficult to diagnose whether or not the problem can be reproduced when the sound jack is not active. This isn't common use for me...

Origin: Appeared mid-October, around the same time I had upgraded to the newest drivers (where the old ones were from earlier than May 2013). All were downloaded through the Lenovo website and/or Lenovo's System Update utility, with the exception of the Intel graphics drivers, which were downloaded through the Intel website. At this point, I was running Windows 8, not Windows 8.1. I installed Windows 8.1 recently, and the problem remains.

What I've tried: disabling drivers, reinstalling drivers, disabling sound effects, disabling audio application overrides...

What I haven't tried: rolling back drivers (being honest, I have a bit of trouble believing that this is strictly ... Read more

Hi all,Apologies if I've missed this elsewhere - new to the forums so still learning to navigate. As background, machine type listed below:X230 Laptop (ThinkPad) - Machine Type 2325, Model BA6As I see it I'm having two separate issues here but they may well be linked: Recent Windows 10 updates are making the taskbar fully ineffective - I note this is fairly common and have tried the powershell route to check updates to no avail; curious to know what the advice here generally is, if X230 is no good with Windows 10 or is there something specific I should be doing to rectify this. This weekend, my laptop has developed a habit whereby the sound and video playback stops working suddenly. On boot-up it's fine but after a while, I can't listen to music or watch videos at all. Bit alarmed about this but suspect it may be linked to the thunderstorm on Thursday (based in London...), given I woke up to realise the powerboard on my TV had also gone. My laptop is within warranty so hopefully if it's hardware related, I would hope this is covered - in truth, I was reassured about the Lenovo warranty but have never had cause to use it at home or work over the last 6 years of using Lenovos.Any help or guidance would be massively appreciated!Kind regards,Bal

Hi. I've got an x230 with Windows 10 installed(Build 10240) and have bought a bluetooth bdc (FRU 60Y3305) and installed it into the laptop. Device manager is unable to see the bluetooth chip before or after I've instlled any of the drivers. I have tried a number of different driver packages. Some have come back with windws saying that "Broadcom Bluetooth Software doesn't work on this version of windows" and one that a number of people seem to have got working said that it couldn't detect any Broadcom Bluetooth hardware. I have a feeling that this isnt going to work  but some people on the internet seem to have got it to work!? Has andybody got any info on this? Thanks

This is so awesome.I didn't say anything except that I didn't know why windows won't start, I didn't know why recovery wont start, and I needed my discs so that I could get things working again. That's the last time I let my mischievious daughter play with my laptop before I get it all set up. Hello all, I have serious network configuration issue (including both, WiFi and Ethernet). When I enter IPv4 configuration, next time I open again the configuration page, the settings are put into automatic mode (so no pre-entered IPs there). But ipconfig shows the entered IPs. Some times ipconfig also show 3 or 4 different gateways, but opening the Network adapters configuration page, all is set to automatic, so I put it into manual mode, then again to automatic mode and disable + enable adapter, then it'll go to dhcp. This issue is really annoying, I had it before the clean install, it worked some time after reinstall, but now the issue came back again. Using Windows 8.1 ProAll drivers are up-to-date. Any help is really, really appriciated,Thanks in advance,Kunnar

My friend owns a spare Lenovo X230 with Intel i5-3210M CPU and I own a Lenovo X220 with Intel i5-2430M CPU. My X220 have a terrible Intel HD 3000 Graphics installed and I like the performance boost the Intel HD 4000 can give me. Since my friend have no need of his X230 (he have an Alienware 17), he said that if I can find a way to exchange CPUs between these two computers, I can, provided that the X230 still works with my 2430M CPU afterwards. So I would like to know is it possible to exchange CPUs between these 2 computers but1. NOT losing all data2. I can do it myself with a screwdriverWe don't really care about the ports except for the USBs and headphones. So if some ports have to be rendered useless, it's fine by us.Any help, tips or instructions would be gladly appreciated. Thanks!

I just received a new compay issues computer: x230 running Windows Pro 64 bit, Office 2010 and an SSD.  Unfortunately, out of the box the pointing devices, either the ultranav or an external mouse and keyboard (MSFT Sculpt), suffer from auto clicking and inability to input text...the text writes over itself...cursor moves forward and then backspaces on itself. The external keyboard worked fine when tested on other notebooks at home.  I did unistall the MSFt keyboard SW on the x230 to see if that made a difference.  Nope.  My IT team remotely updated all drivers, etc. So, everthing system-wise is up to date.  They seemed to have fixed it for about an hour, then it went back to this behavior, including opening multiple instances of applications on its own. The PC is unusable. Thoughts? Halfcalf18

I want to be able to boot my X230 in UEFI only (CSM off). Lenovo media for X230 does not seem to be UEFI bootable, so I boot it with CSM on. The Recovery program asks about the GPT or MBR partitioning with the explanation that with GPT it will be bootable in UEFI only. But when I reboot after recovery and turn CSM off, the "Starting Windows" screen freezes endlessly. There is some hdd activity, but no Windows are loaded.Any clue what went wrong and how to fix it? Thanks.

Answer:X230: win 7 x64 in uefi using lenovo recovery media

You need to enable CSM when ever booting to external devices, so that is normal.     The difference between GPT and MBR is that the newer GPT is more robust, secure and allows more partitions and better error recovery, but both should work.   If you press and hold down the [F8] key, and then turn on the comptuter, do you get the option to boot in to Safe Mode, and if so can you boot in to Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Networking? I presume that you are recoverying due to a prior problem, so more informaiton on why you were recovering may be helpful. Best of luck

I have a 4 year old Lenovo Thinkpad X230 computer.  Since I upgraded to Windows 10 (two years ago?) my computer has randomly shut off with no warning.  There doesn't seem to be a pattern with regard to when or how this happens.  The computer starts normally every time.  This can happen upwards of 5 or 6 times in an hour (although sometimes it can go several days without shutting off). In the last year (since June 2016), the computer has been evaluated by three different technicians on three different occasions (June, October, January).  Each found no hardware issues, no issues with fuzz/dust, no obvious software issues, no malware or other viruses.  Personally, I have explored the answer on the internet and fiddled with the settings relating to sleep mode (among other suggestions) and nothing seems to have worked.  I recently was advised to revert to the original windows 10, undoing all the updates and additional installations that I've put on the computer.  I did this, and miraculously it helped (although it still shut off twice since then.  This was in February).  In the last two weeks, I was forced to upgrade back to normal and the problem has returned.  Additionally, the first person who looked at my computer (back in June 2016), told me that this was aparently a common problem with Windows 10 and that the only way to fix it was to revert to Windows 8.   I would like to not have to do this, if poss... Hello All, Ive arrived here as a last resort.  Ive Googled, I've searched Lenovo site, nothing is working.  Got this error out of the blue and nothing is clearing it. Tried firmware Release FWSH24, no dice.  Tried re-seating, no luck. Just got off the phone with Lenovo tech support, which was a downright terrible experience.  After being told that my warranty has expired, I was basically told I had to replace the drive at my cost. This is a known issue, I cant believe that this is my responsibilty.  Its not merely a cost issue, but to lose all my data like this is unacceptable to me. As you may have guessed, this is a Seagate drive. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have no idea where to go from here.  To replace this drive with the same crappy one seems like a terrible solution. Thanks for any help.

Answer:hdd error - 2100 - r61i

ryanmellish wrote:Does anyone have any suggestions? Buy a new drive.  The 2100 error most likely means your drive is likely toast. I don't know that there's anyone here can do for you. You're just a vicitim of bad luck.  I think your beef is more likely with Seagate than Lenovo.  If you needed to be covered, you should have sprung for the warranty extension.  All of this I think points out the need to have a good backup.  I personally keep four copies of anything I'd prefer not to lose.  If you're unhappy with Seagate, considered a different brand.  You'll get a three year warranty on a new drive.  Consider it $50-75 down the drain for a new drive, but an important lesson learned.Message Edited by ZaZ on 03-27-2009 12:02 AM

Hello, a week ago i bought L450 with samsung 256 ssd, fullhd ips antiglare, 8gigs memory, 3g. I have updated all drivers with lenovo system update(using windows 8.1) i have also updated bios, and yesterday my system started to become unresponsive, i have started taskmanager that said my hdd is under 100 percent of active state, but read write speed was 0 kbs, so i did a hard reboot (because win**bleep** have sometimes bad moments), then my PC does not booted. i have started to find solution, on lenovo website i found that i need to download and execute some *.bat file to udpate SSD firmware to be compatible with new bios (this is **bleep** logic because it worked for few days with udpated bios), also how to do that if PC does not boot into OS how to execute this bat file if most new notebooks have only 1 sata port... So i have tried to remove ssd and insert it back, not helped, i have putted it into my old B590, it also not recognize, i have putted my B590 hdd to L450 it worked. So there is no problem with sata connection. I have tried to falsh back oldes bios i have found on support site, this also not worked. Answer:2100 error ssd not found

It's possible the SSD is just faulty. Lenovo uses pretty much the same SSDs as the ones you can buy aftermarket.1) Get your own SSD/HDD.2) The HDD should be a CRU, and so replacing it will not void warranty unless you were negligent in the process.3) 99.99% no if the SSD has actually falied. SSD data recovery is ridiculously cost-prohibitive.4) Probably not.

I went out and bought a new hard drive and installed Windows 7 on it. As I was installing Windows updates and Thinkpad drivers the hard drive crashed and again goes from boot screen to an Error 2100 message. What can this be and how can I fix it? Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:T61P HDD Error 2100

Hi heugonaut,

Try BIOS update, the list of changes page says "The error code 2100 (Hard disk drive 0 initialization error) is displayed only occasionally after "Setup Default" is done in BIOS Setup Utility."

If that doesn't help then the HMM for T61p suggests following:-

1. Reseat the hard disk drive.
 2. Main hard disk drive.
3. System board.

Hope this helps.

Hi there I posted this on another forum, but thought it might get more of a response on the lenovo forum, so apologies if anyone has read this before.I need a new laptop soon, my T60 is on its last legs, but has lasted a great length of time. I am considering buying either the x220 or the x230, but I live in the UK and the X230 is only available with 2 processor options, the i5 3210 or else the i7. The latter makes it considerably more expensive and probably is too much for what I need. Lenovo is also not letting me upgrade the screen from the default option, as the upgrade is the 3 x 3 antenna (?) so I can't get the webcam.I was originally going to really spec up the 220 and go for that, but I have heard about screen warping problems (my other half has a t400s and has been plagued by the chassis cracking at the palm rests) so I want to avoid that. I know all the other major X220 problems such as throttling have been fixed, one of the benefits of getting a tried and tested machine.I guess my question really is which one should I buy... I am not a gamer, I will be using it for running SPSS, a statistics package; watching movies and streaming etc.Would I be better getting the sale price on the 220 now or do I wait to see if the x230 has more configurations for the uk in the next couple of months? (does lenovo usually increase the options for configuration?) I don't want to lost a good deal on the 220.What do I do? I am very confused! Many thanks for your helpAlison

I've had my X220 for over a year and haven't had any warping problem.

i have a lenovo x230 and its stuck on a screen and all it says it boot menu.  Any help would be great thanks

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad x230 stuck on boot menu

I would need to see it to be sure, but my guess is that the hard disk was logically damaged.  That means the boot record or partition information was wiped out.  It could also be a disk hardware error.  Do you have a backup?

Hello,  I'm having some trouble with turning on my laptop. The problem originally started when some keys on my keyboard stopped working. I cleaned the keys, restarted my laptop, tried a previous restore point and then did a hard reset after nothing worked to fix my laptop.  After hard resetting, I tried turning on my laptop and it did not turn on. So far, I've plugged in my laptop into the adaptor, plugged the adaptor directly into the wall outlet, and removed the battery and plugged in the laptop. The one thing I have noticed with my laptop is that when I plug in the adaptor, the battery and sleep lights turn on for a moment, then the sleep light turns off, and the battery light will stay on momentarily but then it will blink off after a few seconds. What else should I do? Thank you

Hi, My Thinkpad X230 tablet screen is not truning on.  It just shows the dark blank screen. The power button is on, all other indicators are green.I have tried removing the battery, holding Fn button etc. Can someone help to resolve this issue please.. Thank You.

If it is under warranty, call for service, rather than dealing with it. The first step is to unplug it and remove the battery. Press the power button 5 times, holding it for 10 seconds on the last push. Put it back together; plug it in, and try again.
