Inspirion 5558 Bios Cannot Determine Power Wattage, Broken hinge

Question: Inspirion 5558 Bios Cannot Determine Power Wattage, Broken hinge

I have owned this machine for several months after the first two months I had to send it back to Dell because after receiving the message AC power wattage cannot be determined and spending several hours on the phone with Dell they sent me a box and I sent them my computer. They had to replace my mother board (not a good sign on a new computer). Fast forward a few months and clicks (yep the right hinge is clicking) cant see where it is broken but doesn't sound good. So I am going rounds with customer service no I did not drop the computer no did not abuse it. I finally asked the gentleman and I use that term very (loosely) what am I supposed to just stare at my lap top or do I actually get to use it. Seriously did I buy 800 $ 6lb paperweight ? I have 5 year old dell lap top that if it was not over heating I would not have replaced it at all !! This one has been a lemon from the word go !! Now this morning I had to restart my computer and flash back to the message I received when my mother board failed AC power wattage cannot be determined, spent another two hours on the phone, mind you I have not resolved the broken hinge issue, filed complaints the BBB and FTC . But now Dell tell me they will send me a box to send back the computer, then they put me on hold and tell me I have to send it my own box? I said seriously when did this policy com into effect? They said I should have saved the box from 4 months ago! Like I was anticipating sending the computer in again! I cannot believe that Dell has gone this far down hill! I HAD been life long customer but this my last one. IF they cannot stand behind their product then they are not worth I will continue to share my experience and post to twitter, linked in facebook, and google. I still have to figure out fi they are going to fix the hinge issue.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Question: 5558 broken Hinge.

when opening my computer I heard a crack or popping sound. e  Opened fine but when I closed the left hinge was broken.   The laptop still under warranty.   I  see many comments about  the 5000 series hinges.    I need this repaired.   I am a college student, studying architecture.  I can not send my computer to a warranty center to disappear for a week.   All my projects are on my laptop.   Looking for a service center and I see that people are having issues trying to get the screw that breaks due to design repaired.
Need a little help with out  too much hassle.

I purchased Dell 5558 last year through eBay. I am a cautious user of digital gadgets. My laptop cover and its hinges are broken because of normal wear and tear. This product is bogus and worst. besides there is no proper service from dell. I think lenovo products are better than Dell at least they provide prompt services and their spare parts are easily available in market in India. I suggest every one not to go for Dell

I have a 6 month old Inspiron 5558 that won't close properly due to a bad hinge on the right side. Spent an hour with support, only to tell me that this is not covered under warranty, even though there is still another 6 months left under Mfg warranty. The hinge is cracked, which in turn has cracked the cover of the LCD. In order to close the laptop, we have to squeeze the hinge with the screen, and slowly close. From reading through posts, it appears that Dell has ongoing issues with hinges. I totally understand and would expect a two year old device not to be covered, but at 6 months? And a broken hinge is not covered? Anyone have any thoughts?

Answer:Inspiron 5558 - 6 Months Old - BROKEN HINGE

Nope. Nothing. I had many calls with support and they still insisted that it's normal wear and tear on the machine. I purchased through Costco, and they tried calling support and received the same answer. Long story short, I will never purchase a Dell device again. Ever.

Another complaint for a broken hinge issue on the 5558 laptop. Of course Dell Service will tell you that there is no known issue for this problem but search the forum and you will find several complaints. Dell is doing nothing about this problem and in my opinion they are definitely side stepping the issue so they do not have to take care of their customers. Dell service claims that the defect is due to "Customer Induced Damage". Dell also claims there is no known issue for this defect so you will have to call the "Out of Warranty" department. The out of warranty department will charge you 160 bucks and take your laptop for 7 to 10 business days. EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING for a laptop that is less than six months old and definitely does not have any customer induced damage.
Laptop purchased 5/13/16
Laptop broke 10/12/16
Spent an hour and a half with DELL chat - Session ID <private> - Result you are <profane>. DELL does not care if you have a defective product.
On my laptop, the actual hinge did not break but the laptop cover broke away from the hinge. Obviously the plastic cover mounting pads are not strong enough to handle the repeated torque on the joint when opening the laptop.

The left side hinge on my touch enables Inspiron 15 (5558) is broken.  When I opened the device on my desk, it made a cracking sound and the case-lid seemed to seperate from the screen assembly. According to the tag on the bottom, it's under warranty until December 20th this year.  How do I go about getting this repaired?  I can not move the screen at this point.  I have it in an open position, but if I'm very gentle and use many hands, I could get it closed.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi all,
Laptop: Dell Inspiron 15 i5558-5717SLV Signature Edition
Purchase date: 12/09/2015
I am so glad to see to see that I am not the only one who has a hinge cover broken as I was beginning to think that I might have accidentally bumped the laptop somewhere (I am extremely cautious electronics user and none of the electronics products I used had physical damage in past.).   As you can see in picture, left side hinge cover is broken which causes the display screen to come off when I try to close the lid.  Getting hold of the customer representative is an ordeal itself but when I finally could get hold of the guy, he told me that this damage is not covered under the one-year warranty and I will have to pay $150/- in order for this laptop to get looked at by dell professional plus have to bear the cost of the new part.
Apart from this problem, touchpad is too sensitive to touch of my palm and cursor goes all over the place when I type. I have tried to change touchpad settings from control panel and uninstall the touchpad drivers but it has not helped.
Overall I think this laptop is of low quality. Now I understand that Inspiron products can’t be compared with Vostro or Latitude products, but this laptop is bad for even Inspiron standards. My four-year-old Inspiron N4110 is way better than this laptop and still working fine. I am sorry to say this but this has been one of the worst products I have ever used.

My computer is 4 to 5 yrs old, and only has a 200W power supply. What issues might arise as I upgrage & add more peripherals? I recently upgraded the HDD from 15GB 5,400 rpm to 120GB 7,500. CPU is Athlon 750 (with an enormous fan). Graphics card upgraded to 128MB from 32MB. 192MB Ram (upgraded from 64), ADSL USB modem, CD-RW (4x), DVD drive, keyboard & mouse fairly basic Soundblaster sound card, 1 printer (parallel laser) + now adding an inkjet USB2 multifunction device + PCI USB2 card. If an upgrade is recommended, how do you decide what size is needed?

ALERT! AC power wattage and type cannot be determined. The battery may not charge. The system will adjust the performance to match the power available.
Iv come to the conclusion its the module that determines the adapter and wattage type.
As iv tested it with known working chargers and batteries.
Can anyone *** me with this knowledge or allow me to get a schematic for the mother board?

So i bought a new laptop (dell inspirion 15 5558 i3 5005u, gt 920m, 4gb ram, upgrading from an old latitude) a few days ago and i started to notice 2 things.
1. The main (left) fan has only 3 speeds/stages: a) 0 RPM, b) 2200 RPM, c) 4700 rpm or sometimes 4600.
2. The fan goes to 4700 RPM when CPU/ GPU reaches a relative low temp ( 55 degrees celsius) and it is Very noisy. I really love this laptop, but the fan is very annoying. I dont know if it's just my laptop or not. We should be able to have the rpm along with the temperature, or add another speed to the fan around 3000 - 3500 rpm for a good cooling/ noise ratio. It starts abrupptly to rise from 2200 rpm to 4700, its very distracting, unnecesary, battery consuming, and stays there until you exit the app you're working in. I do not think it's normal having just 3 steps instead of a fluid rpm setting depending on the temperature. It's like trying to cool your tea by blowing in it, or if it's a bit hotter, throwing in some liquid nitrogen. You cool it down but it's unnecesary and messy at those temperatures.
I wonder if there are any patches to fix this or overcome it somehow. It ruins the experience and it's a shame for such a good laptop, i really love it like each dell product i ever had. I know it is going to be a problem in the summer where it's gonna stay constantly over 60 degrees (the rpm blowing my ears off constantly) and i need to fix it now or return the product. We urgently... Read more

At first I attempted to perform a clean boot to fix the sudden blue screen error which would reboot after count up to 100%. Apparently I have screwed something up because after that
I could not sign in so I decided to recover to factory state. Now when I reboot I first get Dell SupportAssist Alert AC power adapter watt and type cannot be determined, which is fine because I took my battery out because I can't charge it for some reason (I will get to that problem another time).
So, when I click continue to boot after recovery I get the Dell logo and streaming, then a window pops up that says, Windows cannot complete installation in safe mode . To continue installing Windows, restart the computer. When I do this it loops back to same screen.
I have tried shift f10 no command prompt. I have tried booting three times nothing happens as well. I am at a lost.
Oh, I forgot to say while troubleshooting I set up a password for Security Manager that I must use to access boot. Any suggestions YouTube has nothing for me it seems. Please Help!

I just spent nearly 2 hours today attempting to get my 5558 Inspiron repaired under warranty for a broken right hinge that also screwed up my WiFi. Who do I contact to get this issue covered and cost me 160 dollars?  This is amazing everyone with exactly the same problem on the right hinge, not the left even.
And then to be accused of abusing my machine, when it never actually moves from its location. The only thing I do is open and close the *** lid !  I always had a trust in Dell products and they're quality. Well that's now out the door.
I am an unhappy camper.

I have the Inspiron 5558 laptop with  Warranty up to may 2017.  From the date of purchase I noticed that at the time of lifting the screen the hinges are not comfortable. When I reported  to customer care about the problem they simply said " it is new product after some days you can be comfortable to lift the screen" But now after 5 and half months of being used at the right side big gap is there between the hinge and and the screen. I called customer care they said its not covered  in warranty because its broken due to my negligence and i have to fix it by paying Rs-7000/- . I don't understand why dell is not willing to accept their manufacture fault as my laptop never fell down and i never misused it? I also have heard of the similar problem from my colleagues even.

It is bad enough that Dell makes a product with a defect affecting many of their unuts (bad hinge design/manufacture), but then makes a statement that part is specifically not covered under any of their warranties.

The right hinge broke on my ENVY m6. Now the left one is about to go. The waranty is up and I have noticed that this is a common problem with this product. I should hope that there has been a recall on this. HP should at least repair the issue free of charge (waranty or no waranty). I take great care of my things and my computer is no exception. My laptop left side hinge broke down after enquiring I came to know this is not covered in warranty and quotation provided to me for replacement and labour is 630 usd. You can imagine how Dell is making fool of its customer. Dell purchase inferior quality items from China  and when it is broken customer has to bear the price. My laptop is I7 5558 (15 months old) which I bought for around 800 usd and hinge which does not even falls into the category of technical part will cost 630 USD. Whole forum is full of this broken hinge problem . why cant Dell just replace it to all or least if people reach out to support they should replace it free of cost. Highly disappointed with Dell . I always thought Dell laptops are toughest and best in world. Mr Dell will be very happy to see how his company is sourcing inferior products and passing cost on to customer.  Truly amazing Dell way to go ... people will stop using your product one day.

Hi there - I have an Aspire V5 touchscreen - when I went to close the lid, the screen cracked and I spotted that the left hinge has come apart (risen and cracked the screen). Now the laptop wont work (touch screen is flashing, mouse doesnt work - exactly the same issue as the other posts on this forum). I see on this forum and google search that this is fairly common with Acer laptops (going back to 2010) and wondering why this wasnt fixed. Has there been a recall on this, does anyone know?  I see from a google search that HP fixed a design flaw on their laptops to stop this from happening once it was reported, several years ago (2008) (I wish I had known about this problem before I purchased). If you google that you'll get the information. I've only had my laptop a couple of years. I take excellent care of my laptops, and never had this issue. (I dont travel with it, and dont close the lid often - it sits stationary on my desk and is only 2 years old).   I've sent emails out to my friends working in technology this afternoon - and so far no one has ever had this issue although no one has Acer.  Its a huge inconvenience as I use this laptop for work.  So I'm just waiting to hear back from Acer.Any suggestions on getting this fixed or replaced asap?

I was facing LCD issues, the technician came over and checked the LCD and pasted some stickers on i it so that it can be repaired later.

When i contacted the technician he said it was an OS problem and that i should downgrade to 8 or 8.1

Alright, I have 6 fans in my computer that are led and I plan on changing them.

At the moment I have an i5 2400, SSD, HDD, GeForce GTX 550 Ti, 8gb DDR3 RAM, DVD drive, 4 120mm blue led fans, and 2 140mm led fans. This is all being run by a 630W PSU.

Now the reason I'm asking if I have enough power is because I plan on switching the 6 led case fans to regular non-led fans, adding a fan controller, and getting the NZXT RGB HUE.

Do you think the 630W PSU will suffice or would I need something better?

Also, what are some good 120mm and 140mm fans that aren't too expensive? Hopefully black or white fans/fan blades. One or the other, or both.. doesn't matter. I just don't want something that's not going to match my case.

I suspect a bad battery but I have no history as it's a friend's laptop.
When plugged into the AC adapter, the adapter light comes on, but no indication that anything is charging (no lights on the laptop at all).  If the power button is pressed, with or without the adapter plugged in, the power light and keyboard lights briefly (1 sec), a fan starts to spin, and the system turns off again.
Alternate power adapters have no different effect.

Answer:Inspiron 15 -5558 won't power on

If it's the battery, remove that (or disconnect it), hold the power button for 30 sec. and then plug in the adapter.  Try powering up on AC only.
If it will, it's the battery.  If it won't, replace the mainboard.

I have an APC350 battery pack/ups, rated at, I believe 200watts. My computer's power supply is 380 watts. Does this mean my UPS will only handle or allow up to 200 watts to my computer? Should I be worried not enough power is getting through?
Thanks all for your replies!

Answer:UPS wattage vs pc power supply

No, you have nothing to worry about. Look at it this way:

APC makes the model numbers of most of their UPS's what the wattage rating is when drawn upon during the battery backup point.

An APC 350 is about a 350 watt UPS, capable of powering that much when it runs on the battery backup.

Volts X Amps = Watts

Your PC runs on DC power, at 5 to 12 volts, depending on the hardware it is powering.

Look at the PSU, it will tell you what the input and output voltage / amperage is.

Even though you have a 380 watt PSU, it will never use that much power. You might use 225 - 250 with your current hardware setup.

The thing that is very misleading about PSU wattage ratings is that they give that rating under an "ideal" condition. They can guarantee that rating at zero degress celcius, when the PSU is most efficiant. Once you put that PSU under load, inside your case running for hours on end, it is well above room temperature, and capable of putting out around 75% of the rated wattage.

Also, a PSU is only going to deliver as much power as required by the components plugged into it.

I recently attached a Kill-A-Watt style wattage meter which plugs into the wall, then my tower plugs into the meter. With my computer running, and the video card going full steam (Video game running to wind up the card), it's only showing a draw of about 166W. My specs are as follows:

Intel i7-3770 3.4GHz Processor
AMD Radeon 7850 Video Card
16 GB DDR3 RAM
2 Monitors on the Radeon, and a third on a USB to VGA adapter
1 SSD Drive
2 SATA spindle drives
2 Fans (One on the case and another on the CPU)
Some misc devices such as a USB 2.0 hub and some speakers etc...

In using a few different online power consumption calculators, the setup should be using around 375W. I understand the with PS efficiency the number I'm seeing on the meter will be slightly different than on the inside end, but the inside value should be lower, as it's probably getting around 80% efficiency, which even further throws the value out. This machine originally had a 275W supply, which started crashing when I updated the video card to the current one, and I installed an 850W supply (currently installed) which resolved the issue. I assumed it was overdrawing on the smaller supply, which is in line with the values derived from the online calculator. Now I'm not sure. Also, I tested the Watt Meter by plugging a toaster rated at 1500W into it, and it read 1498W. Pretty close right? So I'm pretty sure the meter is accurate. Any thoughts on why the draw is so low? Thanks.

Answer:Power Supply Using Low Wattage (i Think...)

I don't recall the exact gaming output when I had an HD7850 in my ITX Xeon E3-1230 V2 on a 360W Gold but it was easily sub-200W, probably very close to your logged output . The max draw given by the calculators is for the majority of devices running close to their maximum, something that would be close to impossible with any benchmark utility I've used. Also any 'board chip disabled in the BIOS would result in a slight reduction of consumption.

You can gain details of individual item consumption from running HWiNFO64 with Sensors only, take your heaviest game for a spin and then check the max. outputs/usage % logged. Any overclocking might not be as accurately estimated but I know the eXtreme Power Supply Calculator dev. is actively working on smoothing out most anomalies there.

My approximation of your rig at Outervision (eXtreme PSU calc): http://outervision.com/b/NAE8Ex - it's almost the same result as mine.

My rig @ 3.4/3.8 with a slight voltage boost and my current GTX 970 on a 450W Bronze: http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/798965 - I only briefly see 250+W during benching, whilst gaming it's more likely to be ~220W, if my 360W Gold PSU had a 6/8-pin PEG instead of just a 6-pin, I'd be comfortable using that.

Normally the rule covers the amount of components using power, so the more wattage the better, especially if you are into top flight gaming.Your 550w, should be more than capable to cover your needs, why change to something of a perhaps lower capacity, because it was cheap!.If you do a Google search, there are many information and selling websites on tap.

So I have an HP Pavilion (as a gaming system...don't ask.) running:

AMD Athlon II 2.97 GHz Quad Core

And my power supply is at 250 Watts...

Okay, I'll stop confusing you and get o the real question...

With that PSU and CPU will I be able to run a video card with the power I got...

Im thinking of running an ATi Radeon HD 5770. Will I have enough wattage for it?
Thank You (sorry I know I make everything confusing )

Answer:Power Wattage Help (nub question)

Short answer: No.

With a 250 watt supply you barely have the power to light up your motherboard and processor, never mind your hard drive, fans, and whatever else you put in. You certainly won't be running a video card.

You need - at a bare minimum - a good 500 watt supply and you would do better to go 600 watts or more.

I've just bought a new graphics card and it requires my computer to have a 350Watt power supply. How can I tell the wattage of my power supply? I've got a Medion tower sysyem using a Microstar ms6533 mother board with a Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz processor.

Answer:Power supply Wattage

You'll have to either look at the manual and see if it tells you or look inside the PC. There will be a label on the power supply somewhere that will tell you.

I have Inspiron 5558 with the original BIOS  A02. I usually don't upgrade BIOS unless something is critical because it is somewhat risky.   The latest BIOS update is A14 and states it is a security upgrade.  Does anyone know what and how critical is the security update ?  How much risk it to update my BIOS from A02 to A14?  Anyway to reduce risk  such as Windows BIOS install or install intermediate BIOS versions incrementally to A14 ?

Answer:BIOS A14 update Inspiron 5558

BIOS updates should always be installed in order, one at a time, rebooting after each one. Do not skip to A14.
Are they worth it? That is subjective. I only update a system BIOS to fix a specific issue I may be facing. I never update a system BIOS just because a newer one was released. Why? Because I do not want to risk a BIOS installation failing, breaking the motherboard.

As I am not very technical I don?t want to have to be poking around inside my computer to see what wattage it is so I was wondering if anyone knew what wattage the Inspiron 620 power supply is.

Depends if its a 620S or 620 MT  The Mini Tower is upgradeable the Slim model is not.

This unit might be a bit overkill if you only want to measure the AC power consumption but it was all could find with a quick search on Google. It also shows temperature sensors and can control a number of fans.

Output: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]

I'm not real good with power supply amps and what not but here's the specs of my rig
and already my video card minimum req. are: Minimum of a 450 Watt power Supply

(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 24 Amps.)

Specs:
AMD Phenom x4 955 3.2ghz
1x GTS 250 512mb DDR3
2x 1GB Corsair XMS2
1x SATA Hitachi 750GB H/D 7200rpm
1x ASUS CD-/+RW/DVD-/+RW
1x PC-e TrendMicro Ethernet Adapter
1x 200mm Case Fan w/ LED
3x 120mm Case Fan w/ LED
1x Antec 900 Case

My question is it says i need [email protected] or more amps and the specs of my power supply says it gives off only [email protected] Do I need more juice for my rig?

Quick Question. I have a y560 with a quad i7 Q740.  Looking for an extra power adapter.  I know you can run into problems if you don't match up the Voltage properly, but will you have problems if the Wattage is low? The stock adapter runs at 120 W 19.5V 6.15A I've seen some decently priced replacements at 19.5V & 90W. Don't want to damage my machine. Thanks!

I recently picked up a Lenovo Yoga 13 as so far I am loving it.  The power brick that comes with the computer is rated for 65W.  I have a Kensingtom universal power brick that I beleive I can get an adapter to fit the Yoga.  My Kensington power brick is rated at 120W. Here are my questions.  Would it be ok to use the larger wattage power brick? Would it cause any problems with the system in the long run or affect the life span of the battery?  Would using an aftermarket power brick have any affect on the warranty? The Lenovo power brick is the one that I will almost always use.  It stays plugged in at my desk.  The Kensington power brick lives in my computer bag and is only used when traveling.

Answer:Power Adapter wattage question

Hi Fargo,

regarding wattage of AC adapter/ power supply/ charger/ power brick... the more, the better... no problem at all.

But the voltage used is most important, in case of the IdeaPad Yoga 13 it must be 20V DC (+/- 5%)
and the adapter must have the appropriate type/ size plug with correct polarity,

proper voltage and polarity information can be found printed on the OEM AC adapter.

Hope this info helps... Zehn

How do I find out how many watts my power supply is giving me, without having to search for it on the ps? (can't find it anywhere on the ps itself). If everest says, where at does it say?

Answer:detecting power supply wattage

It should be on a label on the power supply itself in the same area as the input voltage and output voltages. You may have to pull the power supply out of the case to get to the label. If it is not on the label the next option would be the manufacturers website, that's if the model number to the power supply is on the label.

Apparently this is a common issue/design flaw, but the hinge on my laptop is badly broken. I took it to a PC repair place and they said that I could either buy a new one or replace the whole screen. The problem is, the laptop's warranty ran out 6 months ago. It broke over a month ago with regular usage and it's just incredible that there wasn't some kind of recall notice on such a blatant design flaw.  Is there anything I can do to get this fixed without shelling out hundreds of dollars? I can't accept that this is just one of those "sit back and take it" things, otherwise there would be a huge amount of lawsuits.

Question: Hinge broken

Hi, my laptops hinge has recently broken. this is through no fault of my own as i believe, as i never move my laptop, and i have left it open for the last 2 days due to myself being scared of opening/closing the lid as it makes a horrible clicking sound along with the hinge detaching from the bottom left corner of the screen. my laptop is working fine except the hinge. i have read through the other discussions and found out that most people that bought their laptops 3-4 years ago are experiencing this, my laptop was bought in 2013. I tried to superglue the screws together as i do not have the time to get my laptop fixed or even afford to fix it right now, as i know HP will try to charge me a ridiculous amount for such a tiny job as i am a student and have exams in 2 months. What do i do? i would fix the part myself but i cannot find any replacement parts for my laptop. I believe this is not fair for me as i did not even drop the laptop or even moved it around much as i am always doing work on my desk. My battery doesnt even lock on the same side of the hinge that broke, thats how out of place it is.

Hi, I was just using my laptop and my hinge just popped off. I did not mishandle it and was just closing it. Apparently, this is a problem that a lot of people have had. If you're not afraid to replace them yourself, you can do a lot better than $150. Just to get an idea ... go to ebay and search for "T61 Hinges".  That should bring back plenty of results.

(the biggest one) The screen is very wobbly, and won't stay open past a certian angle. There is at least 2" of play in the hinges. I'm assuming one of them is broken. How hard would replacing the hinges be on this particular computer, and could I do it myself?2. (a smaller, more trivial problem) When I wake the computer up from standby, sometimes the LCD doesn't come back on. I can usually fix this by pressing Fn+F5, which switches between the external monitor (which doesn't exist) and the LCD, and it comes back on.3. Very rarely the screen will go completely blank. I can remedy this by pressing the little switch that puts it in standby when the screen is closed.Thanks!-Johnbtw this is a pretty nice computer for free! :D

Question: Broken Hinge

Hello,  I purchased the HP Envy Touch Smart Laptop about a year or so ago for myself considering I was just starting college. Unfortunately, the left hinge has been giving me various problems lately.  My laptop is working well and I have no other issues other than this and I have never dropped it before.  As I mentioned previously, I consistenly use my laptop for school and I am going to need it for a few more years since this is a fairly recent purchase. Lately, I have been very hesistant to close the screen down as I feel that every time I open it - it could get much worse and break off.  Please advise as to how this can be repaired or replaced before college starts back up. Thank you very much!

Question: broken hinge

I bought my HP ENVY m6-1205dx in Jan of 2013 from Best Buy, so it's not really new, however I can't really afford a new laptop right now.  About 6 months ago (Nov 2016) the hinge broke and I've been living with the issue since.  I've checked online for repairs and it's a bit beyond my skill level to do it on my own.  I would take it to Best Buy to repair, however since this seems to be a common problem with this model I feel HP should stand behind it's products and repair it for free.  I've been an HP user for 15 years, however based on this experience when my 12 year old needed a new note book recently, I decided to go with another manufacturer.  HP needs to win back my business!

Question: BROKEN HINGE

MY HP Pavillion dv7 Notebook (dv7-6165US) has always been treated carefully, never been abused, dropped etc. In fact I dont even run it without a cooler pad underneath. I always use two hands to close the lid, carefully. Yet, last week, the right hand side hinge seemed to explode as i opened the lid.... small parts of plastic dropped out and the lid casing is now split at the bottom (right hand side) and the hinge doesnt work. It isnt in warranty... what are my options here? And why on earth did it happen?  It seems to be a common problem (according to Google..) so what can be done?Help please?

Question: Broken Hinge

An HP Envy TS 17 was purchased for me as a gift in November 2013. In August  2014  while the unit was still under warranty the left hand hinge broke and the unit was replaced at no charge. About 1 week ago the left hand hinge broke on the replacement unit. I called HP c/s and got no satisfaction even though this is clearly an issue ( Broken Hinges) that is prevalent  with HP Notebooks. Has anyone had success in getting repairs made without having to pay their outrageous repair costs?
