Preferred Solution: BIOS not support booting from UEFI from mSATA SSD?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

BUG: bios hang when external usb cd connected and bios uefi usb support enabled http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11431632#post11431632 Hi;just tried to boot from external usb cd - and it hangs the w520 bios completely;the only way to boot at all (say from internal hdd) with external usb cd still connectedis to disable uefi usb cd support in bios, which makes cd unusable for boot, but then this external usb cd still works ok under linux;I am curious if anyone has a workaround for this?I am running on bios v 1.32thanks;Andrei.

Answer:BUG: bios hang when external usb cd connected and bios uefi usb support enabled

There are four USB ports on the W520 and they are not created equal.  Are you using the powered yellow port?

Hello,I have a Lenovo G475 laptop and I would like to know how to enable the (U)EFI mode in the BIOS menu and is it possible to access advanced features?I want to UEFI boot an operating system.InsydeH2OBIOS Version: 41CN24WW(V2.00)EC Version:   41EC24WW(V2.00)Thank you.

Answer:UEFI Booting/ Enabling BIOS Features

hi lks1981,

Welcome to the Lenovo Community.

The Lenovo G475 only have the old Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) and doesn't have a UEFI as an additional option. Until such time Lenovo allows flashing of the BIOS to convert it to UEFI, you can't yet enable this option.

If you want to transform the BIOS to UEFI (to allow booting from HDD's larger than 2TB and up to 128 partitions or mix MBR with GPT type partitions) , you can try to use Developer's UEFI Environment (DUET), you can find more info here - http://tinyurl.com/d9owxqr

Hope this helps.

.-I spoke to MSI forums and the person said I had to "(flash) update BIOS for my Motherboard to fully support the Windows 8/10 UEFI features" . ...as apparently now my current W/10 was installed in 'Legacy' mode
But also "for UEFI to work you must do a clean install and the BIOS options must be set to have Windows 8 mode / Windows 10 enabled"

I just wanted to get 2nd opinion and confirm on other forums, such as here, that I would need to do this; clean reinstall Windows and all my games/apps etc.

I have been instructed to:
1-Flash BIOS
2-Check BIOS settings, enable Windows 8/10, disable Windows 7.
3-Save&Exit
4-Enter BIOS check Boot options, are they showing UEFI
5-Boot from Install device, DVD or flash drive. (I don't think your current Windows will boot)

So basically back in the days a simple as F8 boots you to safe mode or F12 could bring up boot menu where you could boot from a flash drive or an optical disc , use a tool like hirens boot cd to undo the mess or just do a windows upgrade and you are good .

Now what's the new trend as UEFI bioses just lock you out from both bios and boot menus unless you legitimately pick those from inside OS menus , a friend had his windows 10 falling into some boot loop and all i could think of was to unscrew the hard drive and work on it externally , is that the trend really or am i missing something ?

It can be tricky getting to Bios if UEFI, particularly if fast boot is enabled.

There are several tricks to force getting to bios

1) See if bios has jumper settings you can change to make it boot to bios

2) Remove CMOS battery which often forces a jump to bios to reset date/time

3) Remove hard drive, and boot with a windows 10 installation flash drive or dvd inserted. As it will not detect hdd, it will boot from usb drive or dvd next, and using repair options, you can get to the bios via the repair menus. This is probably easiest to try first.

Once you get to bios, you can set boot order to boot from usb drive or dvd first. Then replace hdd and boot from flash drive or dvd. I always set the boot order to boot from flash drive first on any new pc, so I do not get caught.

Hi, again...the W520 BIOS seems to have a bug. I've tested it via several Notebooks and PC's and it's the ONLY one NOT starting. I'm using a GPT-partitioned Harddrive WITHOUT UEFI (which is absoluetly legal). The BIOS seems to check the boot flags and wont go furher after boot-select screen showing all present connected drivers. Other drivers (not GPT-partitioned) work fine on W520. The main questions here are: WHY IS THE BIOS CHECKING HARD-DRIVE-BOOT FLAGS??? and WHEN IS THIS GOING TO BE FIXED ON W520-BIOS? I need my PC for work, I try to earn money here..

Hello,
I am having problems with direct booting into Windows 8 installed into a VHDX file.
This is a four-partition UEFI boot on a GPT drive. EFI files are residing on a second partition of disk 0 (the ESP partition) in the EFI folder. The boot virtual disk is residing on the fourth partition of that disk 0.
When I turn on the PC, it shows black screen after the BIOS POST screen. No Windows 8 boot menu, no other information is displayed. However, if I press Shift+F12 (or F12) to start Dell BIOS Boot Menu and choose Windows Boot Manager from the UEFI part of
the boot menu, Windows 8 starts to boot without difficulties.
How do I make Windows to boot automatically without having to select Windows Boot Manager in DELL BIOS boot menu?
I believe I messed up with boot sector somehow... What needs to be fixed provided that Windows 8 will boot into VHDX file?
Thank you.

Hi,

Does anybody know if there's a BIOS version for a satellite A20 which supports booting from USB devices (other than from the floppy drive, since that's already supported)

The reason i need this is because my cd drive is bust. And i'm a student, so i can't afford a new internal one, but i do have an external one... So i want to use that one for the recovery process...

I don't know if i can ask this, but can't i somehow tweak the bios that it WILL support the external dvd-drive, i know this is not recommended, at all, but i'm really really desperate :(

Can someone help me?

Answer:Satellite A20: BIOS update to support USB booting

As far as I know something like this does not exist. Your notebook is pretty old and there is no much support for it especially BIOS support.

Try to find MS-DOS driver for this external drive. Start notebook with floppy disk and use this driver to make your external device operative.

Hi, It looks like there is a bug in latest 2.51 BIOS update for my T430s: if I set Config->USB->USB UEFI BIOS Support to Disabled in BIOS Settings then WLAN modem and Bluetooth do not work because antenna is disabled as well.  It looks like there are no way to activate antenna after the system started.  I have dual boot with Ubuntu and Win7, so both systems have the same issue.  By default that option is activated/enabled, so many users may not experience the problem unless disable boot from USB devices. Thanks,Oleg

Hi,I had a similar problem with my T430s.What I did to fix it was to:1. downgrade the BIOS from 2.52 to 2.512. go to the BIOS, F9 to reload defaults3. enabled WiMax and Thunderbolt in the I/O settings.Maybe F9 reset the USB UEFI BIOS support.Hope they fix the problem soon!

Hi. After I upgraded my hardware to a WD Black 750GB and a LiteonIT LMT-128M6M mSata SSD, I am having issues with my UEFI. When I boot the laptop, It reports that I have no bootable file for UEFI. I can bypass this using the "Boot from file" option in Boot options and manually select the efi file. I can not have this problem get in my way for school and large projects. What I did before - I upgraded from windows 7 Pro "Legacy" 2 days ago. I turn on UEFI native in the BIOS and installed windows 10 Pro. Everything was going smooth until I hit the restart part of installing windows. I was able to boot from the ssd with no problem in Windows 7 Pro "Legacy".  I am on Bios F.61

Sometime in the fall I started getting Windows 10 update errors trying to install 1607 (the anniversary update I believe). After trying different fixes I just ignored it for a while hoping windows would come up with a fix. 6 months later and I'd like to finally resolved this issue once and for all.

Windows Update Failure

I found I can use msinfo32 from the cmd shell to see my BIOS Mode which indicates I'm in UEFI
So I'm not entirely sure what the problem is. I did some funky things when I first built and installed Windows on this computer about a year ago. I have a 3TB Hard Drive and a 500GB SSD. And I found out I wasn't able to use all 3TB without using a GPT. Found some guide online followed the steps and fixed that issue.

I think there was an issue after that where the 3TB hard drive had the Boot part on it, and I followed some other guide to get my SSD to be the boot drive. But I think what I did then has put something in a weird state thats causing the update issue above.

Heres the Partitions
And heres using diskpart
Looking at other peoples partitions when using UEFI and GPT they have some partitions I don't have. Like MSR, System, Recovery etc... but mine just has the one single Primary partition. Recommended UEFI-Based Disk-Partition Configurations What I also find weird is that my boot partition is Disk 1 instead of Disk 0. If I unplug the HDD and boot the computer, then the SSD becomes Drive 0 but the update still fails.

Unfortunately I'm in that place... Read more

A few months ago I purchased a new Lenovo ThinkCentre M73 Small Form Factor desktop computer. It has Windows 7 Professional preinstalled.  I am thinking of updating to Windows 10. My M73 has a regular BIOS.  Can it be changed to UEFI, and would there be an advantage in doing so?Also, I am planning to install an SSD and move the OS to the SSD and use the HDD for extra storage. I think this would be a significant improvement to the system speed and faster boot up.  I have done it on older desktops I own.Thank you in advance to anyone with good advice.

Hello. I have an issue that I need some advice on.
For the last few mornings when I turn on my computer after 6-8 plus hours of not using it, I get this message while the BIOS is booting but before Windows starts:

Overclocking Failed! Please enter setup to re-configured your system.
Press F1 to Run Setup.
Press F2 to load default values and continue.

Now I know how to simply fix this issue by resetting the BIOS and/or if necessary, temporary removing and replacing the jumper pin on the motherboard and/or if *really* necessary, temporary removal and replacement of the CMOS battery. For me, it works by simply resetting the BIOS.

To let you know since this has been happening, I have increased my RAM to 8GB. I had to make some changes to my BIOS like slight voltages increases in DRAM and the motherboard's northbridge and the memory module timings modified. I saved these BIOS changes (as a BIOS profile) to stabilize my 8GB of RAM which seems to work great -- stability issues solved. However, now I have this issue here...

What actually happens is that one the *very first* BIOS booting when powering up my computer, the BIOS does not boot and without the beep from the motherboard's POST BIOS test. My monitor is black while, yet the tower LED shows it is running. I can hear the fan in the tower running fine. I have to manually restart the computer from the reset button and then on the second BIOS boot, the BIOS loads fine, followed by this "Overclock... Read more

Replace the CMOS battery and the messages to run setup will disappear from startup OR keep the computer plugged in and do not turn it off if using a power strip. The current will flow so the CMOS battery is not used to keep the settings, the electric will do that.

Answer:Does SSD mSATA support on G50-80 ??

hi Aswin,

Welcome to the Forums.

From this specs sheet and page 28 of the G50-80 hardware maintenance manual, this unit doesn't have a mSATA slot and the only mini-PCIe slot in this machine is occupied by the Wi-Fi module.

However, if you're still up for an SSD upgrade then you will need to purchase a 2.5" SSD (this thread suggests the Samsung 850 Evo) and just get a 2.5" SATA Enclosure to convert the stock HDD to an external drive (for data storage).

Let me know if this works for you.

Lenovo B570e does not have an mSATA port for SSD

As an alternative you can use a 2.5 SSD as HDD replacement

I assume the V470 supports mSata SSD for a couple of reasons: The lenovo support download section includes rapiddrive drivers for the V470; the bios has a special "SSD" labeled sata port that doesn't show my 2.5" SSD (it shows up as "HDD" in the bios); I also found a Chinese/Korean website which was selling mSata SSD's and included the V370, V470, and V570 in with models that support mSata (such as the y470/y570.) Of course this question begs another: Does the V470 support 6gbps sata iii? I know the chipset DEFINITELY supports it, so I think they have it disabled in the bios. Can anyone confirm this? I NEED an answer abou the mSATA thing... I've been trying to find an answer for weeks now. I would love to find out it supports 6gbps on the mSATA port, but I doubt that is the case. Thanks!

My laptop drivers page gives a msata driver, but i cant figure where it physically goes. does this model come wih msata port? hp envy 14-2166se.

Answer:Does my laptop support msata?

Hi, From the Maintenance and Service Guide (page 2), there is an option to have mSATA drive: Supports the following single solid-state drive configurations:? 128-GB, mSATA? 80-GB, mSATA? 160-GB, SATA But you need to buy the right part for it and looks like you have to throw out the HDD. Please check the book (page 56) Link:   http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-ENVY-14-Notebook-PC-series/5145656/model/5259989/manuals I think I replied a similar post few days ago: you simply can't add. Option: remove the ODD (CD/DVD drive) and try to (a) Replace HDD with SDD,(b) Throw away the ODD and use a caddy to house old HDD Regards.

Answer:Y530 support ssd and msata?

hi greenstrips,

Regarding your questions:
1. As per this specs, the IdeaPad Y530 doesn't have an mSATA slot and uses a SATA rev 1 interface (150MB/s).

2. From this thread, other users have tried to use a 2.5" SSD but they're having problems detecting the SSD drive in AHCI mode (which increases read/write speed and TRIM support). I can't verify if this is a limitation of the unit but setting the SATA mode to IDE seems to be a workaround for the situation.

Hello, I previously had a Y580 and it had a mSata slot. I'm looking to replace this laptop with the Y50. This one in particular:http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VBOCHQO/ref=sr_ob_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1440447921&sr=1-1 Does this have mSata? If not, are there two drive bays? Not quite sure what an 8GB SSD can do for me if you cant even install windows on it. Thanks!

Answer:Lenovo Y50 - mSata support?

hi jbedsted,

Welcome to the Forums.

The Lenovo Y50 Series (which includes the Machine Type Model 59442856) uses a regular SATA III (6Gbps) port for its hard drive and uses the 2.5" form factor (see page 26 of the HMM)
    - Link to picture

As for the HDD, this unit only uses one bay.
   - Link to picture (Y50 internal view)

The 8GB SSD on the other hand (from the HDD configuration 1TB+8GB) acts as a cache for frequently accessed files (you won't be able to install Windows on the cache).

If you're looking for an SSD Upgrade, perhaps you may want to consider getting a 256GB SSD (like this item) or bigger

Can anyone confirm if the Z30 will/will not support drives of this capacity?

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Does Portege Z30 support 1TB mSATA SSD?

Hi

I'm not quite sure about the 1000 GB mSATA SSD module but found some details that the unit would support 128GB / 256GB / 5126GB mSATA modules for sure.

So probably also the 1000 GB size would be supprted too...

Hi, I'm about ready to push the button on an e420s, specifically the "web only" deal with the i5 processor and 6 gb RAM.  I'm really excited!  My plan was to install an mSATA SSD for windows installation and office, and use the hdd for data.  However, I'm concerned because the e420s order configuration page says that WWAN is not supported (and WWAN and mSATA share connectivity/bays).  When I download the user hardware manual, it seems like mSATA *is* supported (page 74 of the hardware maintenance manual). I'd really appreciate it if someone could clear this up for me - I have no interest in an actual WWAN system, but having the two hard drives is really important to me.  Thanks! -nell

Answer:E420S mSATA support

My e420s has a eSATA port on the back.  And it does double duty as a USB port.  I have not tried to attach an esata device to it to test is but I assume it will work. I think you have it backwards though.  As I read your post, you're going to add the SSD externally using the eSATA port., erase the windows that comes with the system, buy a new windows and install it on the attached SSD.  And use the internal disk for data.  Are you aware that that the e420s you are looking at has an internal SSD option (220 $ ).  That makes more sense to me.  Then buy an eSATA disk of the normal sort and attach it to the eSATA port. brassie

In my Y500, I installed a samsumg 850 evo 250 GB msata ssd.I made it a GPT drive and cloned all bootsectors and the whole system from my HDD. So the Msata is now identical to the HDD (minus de D-partition for data.) But I can't boot from it. In the bios the windows-bootmanager on the ssd is recognized, but it does not function. I thought I have to rename the OS partity on the ssd  to C, but I can't rename it with any of my partition-managers (on Bootable cd's). Microsoft says that windows change the letter of the os partition to C by itself. ??I tried removing the HDD to force a boot on the ssd, then he want to "recover", but there is no recovery and I dont want to make a clean-install of  the windows 8 version of 3 years ago and reinstall all the software. I see on the forum that others got it working, but maybe not by clooning ??How to get my Y500 booting from the sdd, with the clooned OS and all software ??

Answer:booting from msata ssd

Try enabling Legacy Boot and disabling Secure Boot (or something named similarly to that). Then move the SSD to the top of the boot order in both the UEFI and Legacy menu, and exit saving changes.

Hi, I want to install an SSD into a Lenovo B570 Laptop. According to the data sheet it has "Two PCIe Mini Card slots".Do these support mSata SSDs like the CT120M500SSD3 (only source saying it would is this) or do I have to get a special PCIe Mini card like the FPN064C2RM?I am not sure what would work, optically the slot looks like a msata slot, but I found no reliable source saying it will work?! I just found this post saying it supports msata SSDs but they werent sure if booting off an msata SSD was supported. Can anyone provide clarification on this matter? Thanks, volucris

Answer:B570 1068 mSata SSD support

Yes, due to BIOS limitations, booting off the Msata SSD might not be possible, you can use that ssd as a cache drive to help boost system performance or use it as a data drive, but you will not be able to boot windows from it

Nope, the QM77 only supports 2 * SATA-3 (6Gbps) ports, the other 4 SATA channels it has are limited to SATA-2 (3Gbps) speeds: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/chipsets/performance-chipsets/mobile-chipset-qm77.html The two SATA-3 ports were used in the W530/T530/T430 for the internal hard-drive bay and the UltraBay, the mSATA port is only SATA-2.

I just got this Lenovo Thinkpad L560 20F2-S1AV00 laptop through my job. I want to add a solid state hard drive. I know I could replace the mechanical drive. I know I could buy a caddy for the mechanical hard drive and install a traditional solid state drive. However, so that I can also utilize the DVD burner, I was wondering if this model supports msata drives like my old Y500 did? I could then utilize an msata drive to run the OS, I could still have the mechanical drive for storage, and I'd still be able to use the DVD burner.

Answer:L560 20F2-S1AV00 MSATA Support?

Hello and welcome,

That's discussed in this thread:  https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/A-quick-info-regarding-SSD-M-2-in-some-6...

1st, if it is possible to install a card-based SSD, it will be m.2, not mSATA.  2nd, looking at the hardware maintenance manual and the above thread I'm inclined to think that the WWAN slot in the L560 won't support an SSD.

That's just based on what I read, not experience.  Perhaps someone here will have further information.

Answer:lenovo B570(P/N:59316294) support mSATA?

hi yangwool,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Looking at page 38 of the B570 hardware maintenance manual, the Mini PCI-E slot is being used by the Wireless card and/or a WWAN card.
  - Link to picture

Although an mSATA SSD would fit on that slot, the manual doesn't indicate that the slot is electrically compatible with an SSD (unlike other models like the Lenovo Y460's mini PCI-E slot (more info on page 28 of HMM):

If you're leaning towards an SSD upgrade, it would be best to replace the stock HDD with a 2.5" SATA SSD (like this item).

Is there a simple way to determine if my PC can support UEFI or if there is anything I can do to make it support UEFI? I have read a lot about UEFI and booting from the GPT partation style. I have also contacted DELL, Nvidia, Western Digital and Microsoft with getting any answers. I just purchased a pair of 2TB WD drives and want install Windows 7x64 in a RAID 0 configuration, (4TB C: drive) in the GPT style instead of MBR.

I'm aware that GPT isn't necessary with drives smaller than 2.2TB, but still wish to use GPT. I don't want to install the OS in MBR now only to have to reinstall using GPT in the future. Like I said, I cant find a simple way on how to determine if my PC supports UEFI.

My chipset is the nforce 650i SLI if that helps and have a Phenoix BIOS that doesnt mention UEFI anywhere in the boot section.

Thanks

In theory, sure. But unless a manufacturer has made a UEFI for your board, you're not getting it.

Question: UEFI support ?

I am looking at the card
EVGA GeForce GTX 750Ti SC 2GB GDDR5 Graphics Card. Looks like a good card. Problem it is said to support UEFI. I am not sure my computer support it. Is it related to windows, to BIOS or to p;rocessor ?

Answer:UEFI support ?

What is it... http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/what-uefi
UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) is a standard firmware interface for PCs, designed to replace BIOS (basic input/output system).Click to expand...

Supports it, doesn't mean it needs it to function. I believe it just means on a machine that has UEFI, the card is able to update and function properly. IF it says "UEFI required" then you would need to research your machine, otherwise it should work either way.

My thoughts anyway, there is a chance I could be wrong.

Hello, I have a T420 4180-LVP, and recently I updated the bios to 1.43 (I think it was this update that caused my discomfort) and am no longer able to perform the boot for install (with dvd or usb, none of the right) windows 8 when I enable UEFI Only in bios. How do I install windows 8 secure boot on my thinkpad?

Answer:T420 4180-LVP bios 1.43 not boot to install windows 8 with bios options UEFI Only

Hi, carlosrrjr

In the BIOS, there should be a settiing for Secure Boot, and it is likely set to Enabled. If this is set to Disabled, and the Boot Order settings are set properly, then you should be able to boot from external devices like a DVD. Just make sure the Optical Drive appears before the Hard Drive in the boot menu.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hello,
When I press Restore Settings button in BIOS setting (through F2 when Dell logo is displayed at booting) then the dialog with two options is shown:

BIOS Defaults
Factory Settings

What is the difference about these two options (BIOS Defaults vs. Factory Settings) please?
Thank you.

Hello together, i have a problem with our System X3650 M4 Server, Machinetype Model: 5462G2G. I downloaded an imm and an uefi update file from the lenovo website.First i updated imm through the imm2 website remotly.Update did go as planned, i restarted th imm2 and after about 5 minutes the new imm2 was working an accessible,Then i tried to update the uefi bios from version 1.01 to 2.31 , also via the IMM2 -> Servermangement -> Server Firmware -> Firmware upgrade option.I Uploaded the new file lnvgy_fw_uefi_tce128i-2.31_anyos_32-64.upd, then started the upgrade process. It went through fine, and after the sucess information i was prompted to restart the OS.After 30 minutes, the server was still in System State = running in uefi mode. When i checked back to the server management -> Server firmware rab, it said UEFI Primary, Status pending, Version 2.31.Then i "powered off" the server, and restarted it 5 minutes later. All status boxes are green, but system status is still in "system running in UEFI " Mode, it wont start with the OS (VMware) Does anyone have an idea how to fix the problem. The Server also has a secondary bank with the old bios version  1.01 , how can i switch back to this backup BIOS? Many thanks in advance, i am getting a bit desperate here. The server should be operational tomorrow morning again.

Hi everyone, recently I am willing to install a mSATA SSD on my w520, but I don't know if the mini PCI-E of this machine support the 6Gbps SATA III, or it can only run a SATA III mSATA SSD in a SATA II mode. Has anyone tested this before? Thank you.

Answer:Dose w520 msata support 6Gbps SATA III?

I don't have the reference handy, but I'm pretty sure that I've read on multiple forums that the mSATA on the W520 supports sata 2 only, not 3.

While upgrading T420 RAM, i noticed a free PCI-e slot for attaching a WWAN card. I happened to have a 16GB mSATA SSD so i popped it in and booted the machine. It greeted me with an error detecting the mSATA SSD...  Are there any BIOS configuration changes required to get the mSATA SSD detected or could the problem be with the SSD itself.

So I have owned my r7 for almost a year now and within the first two weeks I installed an evo840 msata running Ubuntu 14.04. It was setup as a secondary boot device accessible from the boot menu. About a week ago I was in desperate need of more storage and given how I never used Windows on the oem hard drive I wiped it from Ubuntu and created a new luks volume on it to store my things.I suppose I did not shut the laptop down at all until it ran out of battery today, and upon booting up I am greeted with a message 'default boot device miss g or boot failed' while in uefi mode. Switching back to legacy and attempting to boot from my msata running Ubuntu I am given 'no bootable device - - insert boot disk and press any key'.How bad of a good did I make here?Oh, and how does one go about removing the administration bios password if it were to be forgotten?

i think you had Ubuntu grub on your HDD so now, the mSata is no more bootable since it's missing the boot manager. have a look here:https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/grub

Hi Guys
I restored an image created with Macrium Reflect on my wife's computer (Custom build with Asus P8Z77-V LX mother board) and everything went fine until rebooting when i got to the "Please press DEL or F2 to enter UEFI BIOS settings" then everything stopped.
I have tried F2 DEL F8 F12 just about all the F combinations and nothing works, I have two SSD drives one with Win7 Pro and one with Win10 Pro (not connected at the same time) and neither of them will boot up.
I have tried changing the jumper pins from 1 and 2 to 2 and 3 for 10 sec to clear the RTC Ram in CMOS then returned then to 1 and 2 and tried rebooting...no change so i removed the battery and repeated the jumper pin swap then reinstalled the battery and still no change, cannot get passed press DEL or F2 to access the BIOS settings.
I even downloaded the latest BIOS and updater as shown and put them on a USB flash drive together and tried the Macrium Rescue disk, and still nothing happened and it will not open the BIOS maybe i got it all wrong ?
I was hoping someone here might know how to put it right, i am out of idea's and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi There,

I just built a desktop with a sabertooth x79 motherboard, and am running Windows 8.1 pro 64-bit. When I click the UEFI BIOS Firmware live tile via the change PC settings>update and recovery>recovery>etc. my computer reboots normally to Windows and will not open BIOS. I have tried accessing it using the delete and f2 keys, but this does nothing either.

Any ideas? I am up to date in terms of my BIOS, and am definitely running UEFI and not legacy.

Thank you so much.

I don't have a similar machine to check so I can't tell you exactly where in the BIOS configuration you'd find that setting.  Probably under "security" or similar.

You can get to BIOS by doing a full shutdown (SHIFT + shutdown if Win 8x or 10, just shutdown if Win 7) and then pressing the Novo button.

Several Linux distros can boot in secure mode - Ubuntu for instance - so if you are using one of those it shouldn't be necessary to change the setting.

Hi,I have an HP PRO 3330MT which has a foxconn 17a0 motherboard. I checked the bios option and it shows secure boot, fast boot, enable/disable legacy support, and UEFI boot sources. It also has a bios version 8.09. So, does this motherboard support UEFI? Because i wanna replace the gt 730 to an RX 470. (I already checked the PSU and measure the case so don't ask about it!) Thanks before

Hi HP experts, I have been reading about UEFI and Gpt partition versus Mbr partition, and from what i understand about these subjects - the Gpt partition is to prefer if the laptop supports UEFI, because the laptop boots faster, but is that the only thing thats better about it ?I found the driver page for my Envy, and found out that under help program/tools, there were a program named HP UEFI-support (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) . Now i am not quite sure if this means that my Envy supports everything about UEFI, because in my BIOS i dont seem to be able to find anything named UEFI ? But if i press F2 during bootup, i do get a menu wiith for example the opportunity to reverse to an older version of BIOS, and 4 or 5 other options to see what my laptop consists of.I also ran the CMD tool, and ran the diskpart and list disk commands, and the partition is not listed as Gpt, but Mbr, because there aint no * under Gpt column, and i think the only way i could make a clean install for several months ago, was to set the Rufus usb boot tool to Mbr, and then clean install Windows. If and only if you mean that i can gain anything by going the Gpt and UEFI way, by setting Rufus up to make the usb bootable this way, shouldnt i then just reformat to Gpt with CMD with these commands in the order : Diskpart-list disk-select disk-clean , and then shut down the Envy and run the usb drive ?  Further more i suppose the recovery file i made and saved with Ma... Hello SF members,

I see today uEFI is very popular, a lot of people use it...
I have ASUS P8H61-M LX2 (it have modern BIOS utility, etc. ).

So, does my mobo support uEFI?

And what is pros and cons of uEFI? I found that I need GPT formated HDD and GPT isn't recommend for HDD who have less than 2.2TB.

If my mobo support it, does I need anything other?

Trinty

Answer:Does my mobo support uEFI?

uefi are the modern kinds of BIOS. They are better than older generation BIOS and their more obvious feature is that they have fancy graphics, they don't look like old DOS stuff. Most other things are "better" but from a customer point of view, there isn't a lot to talk about. It supports newer standards like GPT, and other modern stuff that wasn't possible with older generations of BIOS.

As for what you are saying about GPT, afaik UEFI can boot from GPT drives, but work fine with normal (MBT) drives as well. Who said that you need to use only GPT?

According to the product specs here, your BIOS is uefi already.

In any case, you can do nothing about it, as it's the manufacturer that decides what BIOS each board will have.

Question: UEFI booting

I created two UEFI bootable USB drives:
USB stick 1.) using windows 10 "create recovery drive" - on a 32GB usb 3.0 drive
USB stick 2.) using EASE US backup/restore software - on a 4GB usb 2.0 drive

Both sticks appear to be UEFI. When I put them in my windows 10 desktop machine, they both show up in the boot menu as "UEFI:" followed by the usb stick brand name. Stick 2 also shows up a 2nd time in the boot menu, with the brand name but without the "UEFI" in front. When I select Stick 1 from the boot menu, the desktop machine boots, asks for the keyboard type and continues to the recovery program. However the desktop will not boot to Stick 2 using either of its boot menu choices.

Then I tried them in my Lenovo Yoga 2pro laptop (now with windows 10). The only way to get the boot menu on this device is to power down and hit the small button on the side. Stick 2 appears in the boot menu, and when I select it the EASE US backup software starts. Stick 1 is a different story however. I can boot to it by selecting "Advanced startup" under Settings, Recovery and then it boots and behaves like it did on my desktop machine. However it does not show up at all in the boot menu, and thus there would be no way to boot to it if windows was broken. (Kind of defeats the purpose of the USB stick!). I also tried this on a second Yoga 2 pro that I have and the results were the same. (I've already disabled the "secure boot" option in the BIOS.)

Answer:UEFI booting

Is your stick 1 formatted with NTFS ? If so, recreate it but format it with FAT32 because some earlier version of UEFI firmware won't boot if it is formatted with NTFS.

Is it possible to update Z400 Workstation BIOS to support UEFI?

Answer:UEFI support on Z400 Workstation

Hi, I haven't seen any documentation on the Z400 for UEFI support.  Most of the Intel X58 chipset PCs don't support UEFI although there is one vendor that advertises a hybrid EFI. UEFI generally requires addtional ROM space beyond the needs of the bios.

I have an Asrock 970 Extreme3 R2.0 Motherboard with Radeon RX480 graphics with Windows 10 installed on a Kingston. I am tempted to set the system on Ultra Fast on the Fast boot options in the bios but according to someone elses post on another forum, you need to make sure that the graphics card VBIOS can support UEFI GOP. I would just like to confirm what Ultra Fast actually does and if the graphics card can support this so i can determine if it's a good idea to set it to Ultra fast.

Cheers for any replies

During my work I have previously successfully deployed PC's with several Computers with UEFI Booting with GPT partitioning for a while now - due to its advantages ( I understand UEFI supports 2TB+ drives and is quicker to boot ) , this UEFI booting was also influenced by being supplied with more modern motherboards which do not natively recognise MBR partitionsIt seems the general concensous is that UEFI is a technology that only supports x64 Operating systems , is this correct? We are being suplied with Netbooks which have 32GB SSD's and I would rather install X32/86 Windows to save a Few GB . I have created a Dual X32/x64 Win 10 Image with UEFI boot and GPT partitioning , however this throws an EFI error when I run the 32 bit install but runs fine on X64 ( Using Rufus ) I also tried creating and running a MBR with CSM for UEFI but Windows does not recognise the SSD I spoke to ASUS , they rekon their netbooks support 32Bit UEFI Win 10 OS , so am a bit lost This is an Asus E402MA-WX0055T

Can my IdeaCentre K330B (manufactured Sept 2011) support UEFI?Would like to use all of a single 3TB drive in two partitions for both Win 7 and my files, but note that this requires the drive to be formatted GPT, which is only possible if the box supports UEFI rather than older BIOS.

Answer:IdeaCentre K330B support UEFI?

hi rsinks,

Welcome to the Forums.

Upon looking at the BIOS Settings of the K330B, it appears that the motherboard doesn't support UEFI (legacy BIOS and there's no UEFI settings to toggle) but perhaps you'll find an interest in trying out DUET (Developer's UEFI Environment),

This is a less snarky variant of a previous topic of mine. I apologize for the overlap. I have an M90p machine type model 5536A86 currently running Windows 10. Certain updates of Windows 10 (including, but not limited to current build 1511) alter the partition table of the system drive during the update. For some users running BIOS/MBR partitioning, the process fails, rendering the system partition unreadable. I am one of those. I would like to try using GPT partitioning, but can't get my M90p to boot a GPT formatted USB drive, though the same port will boot an MBR drive with the same content. I have the latest firmware version 5JKT65A installed, called "Flash UEFI BIOS update" on this support page: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/Desktops-and-all-in-ones/ThinkCentre-M-Series-desktops/Thin... My machine is out of warranty and I therefore cannot ask Lenovo any questions about it directly, nor have I found documentation directly addressing the question. I am at wit's end and will have to discard the machine if it cannot be made stable. GPT seems my best hope. Can anyone confirm or deny that this device is UEFI capable?
