touchpad and keyboard randomly don't work at startup

Question: touchpad and keyboard randomly don't work at startup

Sometimes when I start up my computer, more often than not, when it brings me to my logon screen, I can't use the touchpad or the keyboard at all. I have to physically touch the screen to let me put my pin in. Still, neither work, so I end up shutting down and restarting, sometimes more than once, before the touchpad and keyboard start to work again. I've had this problem for a couple of years now, have been in touch with support, and have also uninstalled and reinstalled my keyboard. My warranty just expired of course. I'm ready to throw this computer out of a window.

Preferred Solution: touchpad and keyboard randomly don't work at startup

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Ever since I've upgraded my dad's laptop to Windows 10, the keyboard and touchpad stop working randomly, and would work only after I restart the computer. (logging off, switch user, standby mode doesn't resolve it.)
There is no pattern to it. Sometimes it would be ok for a few days, sometimes it would happen again after a few hours. I mostly do internet browsing on the laptop.

When the problem occurred:
- The keyboard AND the touchpad would both stop working at the same time.
- USB mouse still works. (I do not have an external keyboard to test)
- The lights on the keys themselves (eg caps lock, wifi) would still remain on if they're activated but cannot be toggled on/off as usual.
- The device manager still showed no problems with the mouse or keyboard.

Things I've tried:
- sfc /scannow
- disabled sticky keys
- used the generic drivers for keyboard and touchpad
- reinstalled the drivers for keyboard and touchpad
- updated to the latest synaptics driver
- made a new synaptics trackpad profile
- disabled touchpad when using the USB mouse

Laptop stats:
HP Pavillion dm1-4002AU
Windows 10 Home 64bit (upgraded from Win7 and then reset to a fresh state)
AMD Radeon HD 6230 Graphics
6GB RAM
Synaptics Driver Version: 19.0.12.95 06Jul15
Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad
Lenovo ThinkPad PS/2 keyboard

This is very exasperating. I would appreciate some help in stopping this problem permanently, thanks.

Answer:Laptop keyboard and touchpad randomly do not work

I am having the same problem. Is there any update on this ??

On occasion, for no apparent reason, my screen will rotate to any orientation. I have to put it into, and out of, sleep mode in order to get the orientation back to where needed. Also, on occasion, for no apparent reason, I lose the ability to use my touchpad and keyboard, and need to use the touchscreen in order to do anything. I also need to put it into, and out of, sleep mode in order to regain use of the touchpad and keyboard.  I've updated all software and drivers out of frustration, but nothing has helped. Help!!

For the past couple of weeks, the touchpad and keyboard on my laptop have either been shutting down randomly at different times or dont work at all when I start up. Sometimes both work, sometimes only my keyboard works, and then sometimes only my keyboard will work amd than eventually it will shut down too.I just want to know what could be causing this and if I can fix it on my own. I never had a problem like this before.

This has happened a lot since my upgrade to Windows 10, and it's really starting to get on my nerves. Seemingly randomly, my keyboard will stop responding to what I type, and my touchpad completely stops as well (no, I did not accidentally click to disable it). These problems will never resolve themselves on their own, but as soon as I reset the computer everything works again - to me, that sounded like a driver crash, but nope! I checked the driver menu and it told me everything was running just fine. What's even more strange is that I have the backlight keyboard enabled so that when I type, it lights up. And strangely, the keys still light up when I press them, so I know it's registering my typing SOME how.

You would also think that this would be a software problem since it fixes immediately upon reset, but I've noticed that this issue seems to crop up a lot right after I have moved my computer... I'm lost and I've scoured the internet for clues, but no one else seems to have this problem. Please help!

In order to possibly do testing on what is causing this (via suggestions hopefully, I've tried everything I can think of) I am purposely not resetting my computer (thankfully this is a touch screen, but this on-screen keyboard typing is obnoxious). Currently, both keyboard and touchpad don't work, but a usb mouse I use does (the computer is also set so that using the usb mouse does not disable the touchpad).

Can i get update file for BIOS(traditional updating from boot CD, not OS!)

Sorry for my bad English.

Answer:Satellite L20 keyboard & touchpad not working but keyboard work in BIOS

If the traditional BIOS update is not available on the download page the only way to get it is to contact nearest authorized service provider. They have all versions.

But this keyboard and mouse issue is really strange. can you use it if you start operating system in ?safe mode??

Hello Lenovo Community, A few weeks ago, my touchpad on my e430 began left-clicking and right-clicking randomly. That is, it will click rapidly and repeatedly on whatever my cursor is hovering over, even if my fingers are not anywhere near the laptop. This is a huge nuisance, as it's rendered the laptop almost inoperable thanks to this clicking causing windows to open and close, internet ads to be clicked on, and the right click options bar popping up several times a second. In addition, I've noticed that my keyboard has begun to malfunction as well, seemingly in tandem with the touchpad problem. Specifically, many keys don't work--or work only part of the time.  I've ran malware scans and virus scans and found nothing. I wonder if it might be related to moisture in the keyboard/touchpad area (the laptop became slightly wet due to a brief rain shower shortly before this problem began), but I am not sure. Can anyone provide insight on this problem and how I might fix it? I would greatly appreciate it. - LS

Hey Lenovo guys: please respond ro this question. It's a serious issue, and we need help. I replaced the HD with an SSD, tried a new memory card, and tried to adjust the settings on the trackpad. For some reason, I try to disable tapping and it keeps resetting the setting on its own. I think it might be a Lenovo software issue. Please advise.

You may be able to fix this by minimizing the Palm Checker of the mouse settings .

The path would be :

I already have the issue that when I put my E5570 to sleep and wake it up again that the keyboard and touchpad do not work. So I have disable the sleep options in the BIOS.
Now I run into different issues.Yesterday I booted the laptop and it hang on the DELL logo, After a while it stated that my EFI file would not be correct. Force reboot and it booted straight to Windows.
What's more annoying is the fact that the laptop boot, the DELL logo is shown and then the screens go's black, as if it's not connected. SO it looks like it hangs.BUT an external monitor through HDMI does work and show the windows logon. The keyboard and touchpad also do not work.External mouse and keyboard do work.
So pretty much I got a brick when I do not have external display/keyboard and mouse available.
When I reboot the laptop it works fine again.Am I the only one with this?Loads of issues with the laptop and wondering if I just have a faulty laptop...
Clean Windows 10 Pro install is done 5 times.Used the  DELL Command Update to install all drivers and patches.Issues keep existing...

Answer:Latitude E5570 - Black display, no resons to keyboard/touchpad - External display/keyboard/mouse do work

I have been spending a lot of hours in troubleshooting this week.
Diagnostics are 100% ok.
Reinstalled Windows 10 about 15 times.Installing drivers by hands, installing drives trhough the dell update management application. The issues keeps existing.
To sum the them up:- Cold boot (laptop is off) to Windows. Keyboard/Touchpad do not work. (Reboot and they work again)- Resume from sleep. Keyboard/Touchpad do not work. (Reboot and the work again)
After I got the laptop I installed 32Gb of RAM and an 512Gb Samsung 950Pro PCIE M.2 NVME drive. The drive should be support as Dell states on the product page and in the manual that PCIE with NVME is supported.
"Advanced features, like industry-leading M.2 SATA and M.2 PCIe/NVME solid state drives, provide data transfer speeds up to 4x faster over traditional hard drivers. "
In order to get the drive visible and running on PCIe I had to disable the sata controller in the BIOS.This way the drive is detected in Windows as an PCIe NVME capable drive.
Just to verify if the issues I went back to default with the delivered 256Gb M.2 sata drive and 8Gb RAM.To install Windows I had to turn the Sata controller back on.
Installed the drivers manually updated WIndows and tested. The issues do NOT occur.
Retested by installing the drivers using the Dell Update Application. The issues do NOT occur.
So I figured out that the SATA controller somehow is the guilty part for all the issues.I mean when enabled to ACHI or RAID the sleep and non... Read more

I don?t know what the problem is but it is not a Windows prob.
it doesn?t work either in Bios.

Thank you for Help

Answer:Satellite A80-154 - Keyboard and Touchpad don't work

Hi

It looks like a hardware problem.
If the warranty is valid you could contact the ASP in your country for a hardware check.

If the warranty is not valid you could firstly check if the keyboard cable was connected to the motherboard properly.
If it?s connected properly then a keyboard malfunction is possible and it would be advisable to check if a replacement would help to solve this issue.

The compatible parts can be ordered also from the ASP in your country.

Hey everyone! I just got a new Edge 15 yesterday (this is the Best Buy exclusive one, and it's more expensive of the two options available), but I'm having an issue with it that's really preventing me from enjoying using the machine, and it's incredibly frustrating! Whenever I press keys on the keyboard and go to use the touchpad together with it, the touchpad freezes/delays for a number of seconds. It makes it incredibly difficult to play any kind of casual game or just browse the web. I've spent a long time looking up solutions, but none of them have helped at all. This Lenovo uses the Alps driver and while it has palm tracking, turning it down to minimum doesn't fix the problem, neither does going through windows 8.1 and choosing the option to have no delay in the mouse/touchpad settings there. I have no idea what to do to fix this problem, if anyone could help that'd be amazing!

Hi, I'm using a HP EliteBook. And recently I've been using this docking station to insert a monitor and a different keyboard to it. That worked fine until I then had to take my laptop with me and ejected it from the docking station in a hurry (while it was turned off). And now my laptop does not respond at all to neither the keyboard nor the touchpad. My wireless mouse works, so I used the screen keyboard to unlock the PC. And the question is then; how am I supposed to fix this?

Good evening, Every now and then, after using the laptop for a while, or getting it from sleep mode, the touchpad simply quits working as it should. Clicking by simply tapping the pad stops working, and clicking by really pushing in the trackpad itself will only activate either right or left click. Sometimes it even quits working at all. After rebooting the device the issues will be over, which makes me think it is some sort of a software issue. Also every now and then, while working in my student room, my laptop loses its internet connection. While there are many Wi-Fi signals in my student room-complex, it can't detect any of them. Then, after waiting for some time and rebooting the device once or twice, the connection will get restored, and all the other signals are back as well. Both issues aren't very huge, yet very annoying when working on a paper or so. Especially since I bought the laptop a little longer then two months ago, assuming due to it's price and the ThinkPad?s reputation (being able to stop a bullet and yet still work) this is a huge disappointment Anyone who has a solution for me for either one of these problems? Thanks!

Answer:Lenovo W540 randomly loses Wifi connections and its trackpad/touchpad often doesn't work

I have also noticed some wifi problems on the W540. I have the Intel AC7260, and occassionally, it stops working - reporting a driver problem. When this happens, it is not working at all and cannot scan for available wifi networks - exactly like you report. However, if I do a quick uninstall and scan for hardware changes within device manager, normal operation is restored, without having to reboot repeatedly. After a while, it will stop working again - this is not too frequent, however. I assume it is a dirver problem.

Occasionally, my laptop's touchpad won't work on start-up. This does not happen all the time, it appears to happen every other boot. I can plug a USB mouse at any moment and have that work fine. This also only happens on Windows 7 from what I can tell, as I dual-boot with Ubuntu and Ubuntu has never given me this problem before. I can also use safe mode with Windows 7 and have the touchpad function fine all the time.

If I look into the device manager when the touchpad is unresponsive, it will say that the PS/2 mouse failed to start.

I've updated it to the most recent driver as found here:
http://www.synaptics.com/support/drivers

But this problem still persists. Any ideas how I can figure out what's wrong?

I have a problem with my touchpad:  every time I restart my computer, or turn it on after it has been off, the gestures on my touchpad, such as scrolling, do not work; all I can do is point and click.  If I want to use the touchpad, I have to open Control Panel> Hardware and Sound> (Devices and Printers)> Mouse> ELAN> Options> Set all to default> Apply/OK.  doing this every time i restart my computer is very annoying, and is time consuming.Does anyone Know anyting that I can download or install so that my mouse can function fully without having to cange settings every time, or if there is something else (settings) that i can cange?  If you can't help, please at least let me know that you have the same problem?Thank you!

Has it ever worked correctly? If so, it could have been an update or application that did not install correctly and just needs fixed. If you can recall when it worked properly, just perform a system restore to that point and work forward from there.

A couple days ago, my keyboard and touchpad mouse stopped working. I thought it was a hardware issue and ordered a replacement keyboard. As for the touchpad, I'm just using a wireless mouse. I replaced the keyboard a couple days later with the new one, and when I turned on my laptop, it works again, but when I put my laptop to sleep and wake it up, I hit enter, and then it stops working. I cannot type anything until I restart my computer. I figured it has to do something with the drivers, but I'm not too sure. Here is my computer specs:

Product: HP Pavilion dv9700
Model: dv9925nr
Windows 7 home premium 64bit

I've gone to the HP website to get the drivers, but they do not support windows 7 for my computer.

Answer:Laptop keyboard does not work after sleep and touchpad

try changing the power plan, as you said when it goes to sleep, it stops working. Ty changing it to high performance.

I am not able to type in my password nor get F1 or  F12 buttons to work (or Lenovo Care button), and can't get to BIOS. I can use the touchpad but that's all.  I can turn the computer off, restart, and put it in sleep. I did use the Rescue and Recovery Startup Disk I made and noted that kbdclass was running, kbdhid was stopped.  It seems like a hardware problem, but I have no way of checking the devices that I can figure out. I hooked up an external keyboard via USB and it didn't even light up.  What now?

*************** SOLVED *************Hi there !   I really need your help this is very concerning. My PC is an Ideapad 100S-14IBR. While I was typing some text in college, my hardware (touchpad and keyboard) stopped responding and the text editor kept on writing the last key I pressed, as if kept it pressed. Not concerned, I just hard rebooted because I was stuck. This hasn't solved the issue, both my touchpad and keyboard are still unresponsive. When booting, pressing F12 to acces boot menu doesn't work either (used to work). The keyboard isn't even recognised in boot... this makes me think the problem is a lot more serious thant what I thought At home, I did a complete reinstall of the system with a USB keyboard and mouse plugged after saving my works. Reinstalling didn't solve the problem, the touchpad and keyboard still don't work. I checked and I have both mouse and keyboard drivers, all up to date. The Windows Diagnosing Utility didn't find anything. Lenovo System Update doesn't give me any result too.How can I fix this please ? Help will be greatly appreciated. I need this computer for work :/ Thanks

My Lenovo g50-70 will not allow me to use my keyboard the touchpad at the same time. If' i'm moving the mouse pointer and then try to type something at the same time the pointer will stop moving until i stop typing.  I've searched the dicussion boards for a solution to this problem and I have found posts that instruct me to minimize the palm tracking portion of the driver. Hi

There are no many options which could solve this problem.
It can be a hardware problem or software related issue.

Can you use the internal keyboard within the BIOS?
Check this.
If this would not be possible, I assume the hardware is faulty.

Additionally I recommend testing the keyboard and touchpad using the factory settings.
Recover the notebook and check if the keyboard would functions?. Otherwise you will need an helps from an notebook technician in order to replace the keyboard and touchpad

Hello everyone. I have one big problem. I reinstalled my 8.1 pro (legal copy, disk been fully formatted) and it was okay for few hours. Next time im starting the laptop, my keyboard and touchpad doesnt work. I plugged USB mouse and keyboard and it works just fine. I went to device manager and besides Standart PS/2 keyboard and mouse icons there was orange triangle meaning that i have problem with drivers. I searched drivers online, but unsuccsessily.. After few hours of trying to fix it, my Standart PS/2 Keyboard turned into Unknown device and now im completely lost. Adding photo of device manager, i hope someone will help me here.

Answer:8.1 pro laptop keyboard and touchpad doesnt work

Since we do not know the make and model of your laptop.
Should try the laptop manufacturer's website to see if you can find the drivers for this. Does look like there missing.

What does it tell you when you right click the ones with yellow exclamation points ?

You can right click and select update driver software, either search automatically or browse your computer, select signed driver from the list is shows you.

hi ! when i press a letter on the keyboard the touchpad stops working. i tried with palmcheck option but the problem remains. i have ELAN software and everything seems updated (according to windows update and lenovo softwares). in touchpad settings i found the option about the mouse block during digitation, but it doesn'twork. can someone help me?

Answer:z 50 75 pressing keyboard touchpad doesn't work

I have the same problem with a Y50-70 and ELAN Touchpad/driver too. It has been sold to me as a gaming Laptop and now one major functionality you need for gaming doesn't work - what a mess. I spend hours in the Internet reading hundreds of articles from people with the same issue.1. Solution: Disable the Palmcheck function but unfortunately the ELAN SW doesn' provide this option.2. Solution: Change the Touchpad sensibility (some say max, some min) - neither works with the ELAN driver.3. Solution: Go into the Registry (regedit) and change parameter (DisableWhenType_Enable and DisableWhenType_DelayTime_Move in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elantech\SmartPad\), to 0 with Regedit. Didn't work for me too. 4. Solution: Uninstall the ELAN driver qnd let Windows install a generic PS2 one during re-boot. This finally did it for me, however you are losing all the additional functionality of your Touchpad and can onlwy move the cursor plus right/left click. No zoom; no scroll, no multiple finger functionality anymore. So be it, I bought the Laptop for Gaming. I'm pretty disappointed about this but hope there will be better driver coming out soon.

Answer:ACER Keyboard and touchpad doesn't work

Try http://www.laptoprepair101.com for a good desciption on how to disassemble a laptop.Be VERY careful when disassembling. They are fragile and the connections are short. The ribbon cable under the keyboard might be the problem although the USB connections are integrated on the motherboard and with your earlier problems might point to that as the cause.

I own a sattelite C870-13E computer since august.

Yesterday for no apparent reason, my touchpad stopped working. (no, I didn't turn it off)
Not really bothered by it, i kept working on my computer for several hours.
It then occurred to me it might be a little bug, so I decided to restart my computer.

When it turned back on, not only my touchpad didn't work, now nothing on my keyboard responded, not a single key. I updated drivers, bios, ran a virus scan, rolled back my computer to a few days earlier, nothing helped.

The strange thing is that the keyboard still responds when i hold the 0, F1 or F8 keys, as well as enter and arrow keys to get in the menus before windows starts up.

Using those, i used the toshiba recovery to set the computer back to factory settings.
Despite all that, keyboard and touchpad are still out.
I really don't understand, since it works during startup it can't be actual materialistic damage!

Now i'm getting frustrated cause i have no more solutions and typing with on-screen keyboard is really slow! =p

Any help?

Answer:Keyboard and touchpad don't work on Satellite C870-13E

Hi

I think it?s a hardware malfunction because you already tried the system recovery and the keyboard does not work even if using factory settings.

But it would be interesting to know if the USB external keyboard would functions. Can you test this? In my opinion if the external keyboard would works properly, then this would mean that your internal keyboard is faulty and needs to be replaced.
I?m wondering if the touchpad fault is related to the internal keyboard malfunction.

However, I think the warranty should be still valid if you purchased this unit in August. So get in contact with service and the guys should fix it free of charge!

I have problem with keyboard and touchpad. Laptop is Satellite A300-1G5

I have Vista home premium and when I power computer on, I must put password in user box then my keyboard and touchpad don't work.

In Bios my keyboard working but when Vista starts it does not.

How I solve this problem?

Thanks!

Answer:Satellite A300-1G5: Keyboard and touchpad do not work

Hi

First of all please check the device status in the device manager.
Please check if the keyboard and touchpad are listed correctly without any yellow exclamation marks.

But you should try to reinstall the drivers again even though the keyboard and the touchpad were recognized properly.
In this case I would recommend removing the keyboard and the touchpad from the device manager and then you should reboot the notebook once again.

After Vista has rebooted the both devices should be recognized again and should work.

Please check this!

I have Acer D150. Im looking for solution at the moment.

Sometimes when i start the laptop and the mouse driver wont load properly so i have to use keyboard to go Device Manager and click Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad and rightclick and click Uninstall. The uninstallation went successful and the touchpad is working. But the problem occurs when i shut down laptop and next when i wish to use the laptop the problem's there.

Computer help from Paltalk advised me to uncheck and recheck Synaptics mouse on msconfig and i tried that and it didnt work.

Been went to PC World this afternoon and show to man and he checking and puzzling and advised me that he think mouse driver wasnt the problem but something is affecting mouse driver so advised a reinstall of XP. That why im looking for more solution to repair the problem without reinstall of XP.

Hi,

My daughter's Toshiba Satellite Pro A100 has developed a couple of faults.

Firstly, the keyboard displays random characters such as a stuck key would. eg, if in Google or Wordpad the system will at random type a single character over and over again even when no key is pressed. Occasionally it will also open windows or programs as if the 'enter' key has been pressed, or cycle through desktop icons.

Secondly, the touchpad is non-responsive and cursor operation isn't possible from the touchpad or buttons. I don't know if the two are related.

She assures me she hasn't spilled anything on the laptop, so any help would be appreciated to rectify these faults.

Thanks,
Brian

Hi everyone.

I was hoping someone could help me with a problem I'm having with my Satellite 5200-802. The Keyboard will not work evn though it shows in device manager and report it as working fine. I have updated the BIOS and tried a lot of other basic stuff so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It may be worth mentioning that I also cannot get my touchpad driver to register.

Many thanks.

Answer:Satellite 5200-802: Keyboard and touchpad dont work

Hi

Do you get an error message or do you have any bed signs on the screen?
Can you use the keyboard to access the BIOS?
If yes then the keyboard was recognized and works!

If you cannot use the keyboard running OS then I would recommend to delete the keyboard device from the device manager and to restart the notebook.
After new OS reboot the keyboard should be recognized again.

But I think that you will be not able to access the BIOS.
Due to the fact that the touchpad does not work too, I presume the hardware is faulty or there is no connection to the motherboard. Maybe a lose cable?

Maybe you should check this. But note; if you have no experience contact the notebook technicians. Bye

Did you install mouse drivers for your external mouse? Sometimes they can cause problems with the internal touchpad.

Otherwise you should send the laptop to an Authorized Service Partner to get it repaired under warranty.

Hello, The left button on my Synaptics Touchpad doesn't work when I'm pressing a key on the keyboard. Initially, I thought it was a PalmCheck problem, but that feature was already disabled. The right click works fine and so does the touchpad itself. The only problem is the left button. I tried reinstalling an updated driver, but that didn't fix the problem. I tried the generic Synaptics driver and both the HP Windows 8 and 8.1 versions. They all worked fine for all touchpad functions except for the left button which still doesn't work when I'm pressing a keyboard key. I tried using a wireless mouse and the left click worked fine so the problem is only with the touchpad.

Answer:G550 keyboard and touchpad do not work when I remove wireless KB and mouse

hey johannfu, when you have the wireless keyboard connected, was the keyboard and touchpad working on the G550 ?if not and only the Microsoft Wireless keyboard was working, then it is a high possibility that the drivers that came from the wireless keyboard overwritten the drivers for your G550 keyboard and touchpad.

When I open up my computer and try to login, both the keyboard and touchpad no longer works.  The only thing I can do is touch the screen and hope the on-screen keyboard pops up.  but I can't use the actual physical keyboard or touchpad.  They seem disabled. I don't even see the mouse pointer arrow or icon on the login screen at all  when I try to move my hand around the touchpad now it takes me a couple tries to login abd only after I  login, the keyboard & touchpad work again Im using HP Spectre x360. I think this started happening after the last major auto update  (Also now the computer doesn't go to sleep when I close the lid,  and after a while the computer gave an alert message that the battery was low since it never went to sleep.  After this last update, the low battery alert message is now pink instead of blue )

Note: there is a release latch on the left which you have to move and hold in order to remove the tablet.

Maybe there is some connection problem.

Ok, so I've I thought this problem was ultimately isolated to just opening photoshop: but now it just does it with any program period. How it works is my computer randomly reboots and when it starts back up again the mouse, keyboard, and sometimes monitor are not working. I recently installed new RAM, a nvidia gtx 760 graphics card and a new power supply.

I've tried everything, sfc/scannow, disabling the automatic restart on a fatal error: but it does it anyways, reinstalling/updating the drivers, checking the temperature, air dusting it out, ect: everything short of tactical nuclear weaponry, but this problem just wont take a hint.

Any help would be much appreciated: I'm nearing a deadline and this problem its starting to be a thorn in my side

Edit: now my computer just froze and shut down

Edit: my computer has now bluescreened, it listed no error code but I got a line of text reading 0x0000007F

Its says the crash was caused by: ntoskrnl.exe

Got a nasty surprise today - unlike the other major manufacturers, who offer one year free tech support, Lenovo does not. $179 for a contract or $89 to cover a single incident. Thanks, guys. :-/ Here's my problem. G780, bought last October. Upgraded from Win7 Home Premium to Win8 Pro.A few days ago, the built-in keyboard stopped working. It works in the BIOS, but when you boot into Windows, Windows doesn't recognize it. There is a PS/2 keyboard driver and a HID Keyboard Device that show up in the Win8 Device Manager. I'm assuming those are the drivers for the built-in keyboard. If I plug in a USB keyboard, it shows up in the Device Manager as an additional HID Keyboard Device. Through trial and error, I discovered that the keyboard still works fine when the Elan touchpad driver is not installed. The problem with THAT: I can't disable the touchpad unless the driver is installed, and if the touchpad isn't disabled, it'll screw me up because I accidentally brush my hand up against the touchpad while typing. I've also noticed that sometimes, the touchpad icon in the system tray shows up with a CAUTION icon overlaid on top of it (you know, the little yellow triangle with the exclamation point). I can't figure out why, and I can't figure out what changed on my computer that caused the keyboard to stop working properly. I've tried uninstalling the Elan touchpad driver, downloading the latest driver from the G780 support web page, and reinstalling it. No... Read more

Answer:G780 keyboard doesn't work, but ONLY when Elan Touchpad driver is installed.

hi stevesobol,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Are you also able to type your password on the login screen but after that the keyboard gets disabled? If this is the case, check this article as it's similar to the keyboard issue.

As for the Keyboard not working when the ELAN touchpad driver is not installed, this is surprising as I've never heard this issue happen before. Are you not able to disabled the touchpad via Fn+F6 even if the driver is not installed?

Hello. I'm having a rather incredible problem with Windows 8 Pro. Sometimes, after booting, my notebook's keyboard doesn't work at all. Some facts about all this to inform the diagnosis:
The keyboard doesn't work in Windows; it does in the UEFI bios. (Ie I boot to windows and it doesn't work, I then reboot, test it in the bios and see that it works; I go back to windows and it still doesn't work there.)
It happens randomly: maybe once every ?5? boot ups. Definitly not always.
**I think** (but aren't sure) that it only happens when booting, not when coming back from hibernation or sleep.
Unplugging the battery or the power cord doesn't help.
I'm fairly careful about malware and I don't think it's related. I don't have any malware protection other than Windows'.
The System section of the Event Viewer only has one apparently relevant event, "The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device ROOT\WPD\0000.". Notice this is related to a Logitec input driver, and I'm having trouble with the notebook's built-in keyboard. I never plugged a Logitec keyboard (but I did use a Logitec mouse in the past).
Nevertheless I acted upon that event log. Some pages elsewhere (The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load for the device... error - Windows 7 Help Forums) suggested changing the Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework from Manual (triggered) to automatic. It didn't help.
It has always solved itself after a random amount of time (from a few minutes to an hou... Read more

Answer:Windows 8: keyboard laptop randomly doesn't work after booting

Some additional info:
It was suggested somewhere else that turning off Windows 8's fast boot option would help; it didn't.
I just completed a run of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and found nothing except for 4 autohotkey .bin files that seem ok for the rest of the AVs at virustotal.
Nothing relevant seems to be logged in the System log when the keyboard comes back up.

Thanks again!

My lenovo laptop has a terrible beep beep sound when i start the laptop. And when i click any icon on the destop it  opens the recycle bin (its on the top left corner) and when i refresh the destop always the recycle bin is highlighted. When i type something on the internet to search or a message the line ( which blinks when we type) always goes back. So I cannot even type anything correctly. I can't move the scroll down when i am on the internet the scroll goes up again. i need help.

Answer:Lenovo G570 beeps constantly on start up - keyboard and touchpad don't work properly

Shanuka,
Welcome to the forum!

Would you turn off the system and restart and see if you can go into BIOS?   If you get the constant beep on startup and are unable to press F2 (I believe it is F2) to enter BIOS, then it sounds like you may have a stuck key on the keyboard, or the cable for the trackpad or keyboard is not fully connected to the systemboard, OR the internal cables are pinched.   If this is the case, then I think you probably need to contact Lenovo service for help as it is likely a hardware issue.

If you are able to go into BIOS, are you able to move around in there?  You could try reloading BIOS defaults and reboot.  If everything works in BIOS and the problem is only in Windows, then it could be a driver / setting (less likely), but you could try to open mouse in the control panel and check settings.

But just based on the symptoms, it really sounds like either the touchpad or keyboard has a stuck key or is acting as if one is stuck due to the bad cable connection or a short.

Upon starting a T61 (6463) computer, the TouchPad, TrackPoint and keyboard are disabled aprox. 1 out of 3 times.  Two out of three times the computer will work normally. When TouchPad and Trackpoint are not working a USB-connected mouse will work normally 100% of the time. I will be indebted for suggestions about how to get rid of this problem.

Answer:In a T61 type 6463 the TouchPad, TrackPoint and keyboard wont work in aprox. 1 out of 3 start ups.

Is it a used computer if it is then its gonna need new components if you search on let's say amazon you'll find everything you need a new keyboard will well put you in 100$ and the track point repair is gonna be around 40-60$ I had the same problem...

I was having responsiveness issues with the trackpad for a while, then, i open my laptop one day and it's completely unresponsive, as well has the backlit keyboard not working (the hotkey still pops up that it's "lighting up" the keyboard, but no actual lights) and the trackpoint being completely unresponsive too. I've tried:- Restarting computer- Using Lenovo's various "fixing" softwares- Looking for a keyboard firmware shortcut for enabling/disabling trackpad, (doesn't exist on this computer)- Re installing drivers (Ultranav driver refuses to install manually, "driver installation failed")- Booting on a non microsoft OS (Booted on a linux Mint installation and it still doesn't work)- Booting into BIOS and looking for "enable/disable trackpad option", That option does not exist for me.- Opening up computer and checking the physical connection, All plugged in fine. When i open the device manager in windows there is no entry for the mouse whatsoever. The touch screen and the pen both work fine. I think it all points towards a hardware issue, i can pick up another trackpad on ebay for pretty cheap, but obviously i'd like to make sure that it would actually solve the issues.  The major confusion for me is that why would faulty trackpad hardware stop the backlit keyboard from lighting up? How are the two linked? Any ideas appreciated, Thanks!

Hi everyone. A few months ago I got a virus, think it was virus doctor or something similar, and I had to reset my computer because it was working like mad loading the program. Anyway, after I reset the computer, it went to the boot menu and my keyboard wouldn't work any longer. It starts loading windows, but resets automatically. My keyboard is USB, and it works for the BIOS, but not in the boot menu or for booting up with a cd. I tried 2 seperate PS2 keyboard, and neither of them worked either, not even for BIOS.
I am running Windows XP SP3 on a PC, if that helps. Thanks.

Answer:Keyboard won't work on startup

Hmm, check your P/S keyboard ports to make sure the rubber inserts are not mashed in.
If they are, they can be open again, but you will need a gentle hand and thin needles to reset the rubber so your connectors are visible.

For your USB keyboard, make sure bios does it have enabled, reboot and make sure the keyboards, number lock and caps button lights up 3 times.
Once done, hit number lock once or twice to make sure your computer is getting a signal to it, if it does this, it will stay lit green and you should be good to go.

Hello. Last week a got a brand new ThinkPad E460 factory sealed for work. And it've had troubles with it out of the box, I have a ThinkPad T450s private and have never experienced anything like this on my private laptop. So of the bath to tends to freeze at Lenovo logo in BIOS boot screen. And I have to press a bunch of keys for it to continue. I think I might have fixed this issue by disableing secure boot and anti-theaft. It didn't always happen, but it happend every morning at work. I disabled these features now so I can't confirm or deny if that problem is competely ficked. I have of coruse updated the BIOS and all drivers. My second issue is that EVERY time, not only when I restart but also if I sign out of my account and back in again is that my TouchPad refuse to work if I don't click a key (any key) on the lenovo keyboard in addition to this left arrow key is in a loop. This is really annoying as I use this with a dock at my workplace. If I move the coursor to a textfield with my external mouse or the Trackpoint (that works fine regardless if I click on the keyboard or not) I will see the corusing being moved to the left contantly untill I click a key at the keyboard. What is going on? These issues seems really strange to me and not something you'd epxect.

Answer:ThinkPad E460 - TouchPad Will not work untill lenovo keyboard is pressed and arrow left is in a loop

I have not had the POST freeze problem, although I did have a bug with Yubikey, I had to push the Yubikey button twice to input the second part of my long VeraCrypt password, this was solved with a BIOS update.. Also my right speaker sounds broken on higher volumes, and OSD brightness bar is stuck on screen after waking up from S3 suspend, but goes away if I adjust the brightness with the keys on the keyboard. I do also have the TouchPad lockup problem! I have noticed the same, random lockups of the TouchPad. The TrackPoint works but the TouchPad locks up. It is restored by pushing a keyboard key or the TrackPoint mouse keys, or just leaving the TouchPad alone for a while (5-10 seconds). I got this machine with Windows 10 pre-installed but decided to go back to Windows 7 since Windows 10 has been nothing but a big PITA. I didn't notice this problem on Windows 10, but I have plenty of other Windows 10 specific problems. After installing all the latest drivers available for E460 (latest available from the site at the time, September 2016) this problem popped up. Current driver: 8.216.1616.135 I just checked System Update and noticed an update for the ALPS ThinkPad UltraNav Driver, so I'll update and check back (if I remember). New driver: 8.216.1616.151[Problem fixes]- Fixed an issue related to TouchPad Cursor no response in a short time after resume from S3 by lid close Maybe this have or will fix your TouchPad problem too.

After I start the computer the keyboard sometimes becomes unresponsive. It was just happening here and there, but lately it's been more frequent. Sometime I have to restart 3-4 times before it works. It's not a remote keyboard and I've ran Malwarebytes, ccleaner, Spybot search and destroy and AVG so it should be clean. Any ideas?

Answer:Keyboard doesn't work on startup

Try another keyboard. It could be the port or the keyboard going bad.

Help!! I was running several applications and my computer seemed to crash--the screen went blank and I got no response from the mouse or keyboard. When I pushed the power button, the screen came on & windows shut down normally. Upon restart, neither the keyboard or mouse would work after windows started. I turned it off and restarted again, going into BIOS and the keyboard worked fine. Upon exiting and continuing startup, again no response from mouse or keyboard. Possible contributing factor: about half an hour before the mouse/keyboard problem started, I got a huge static shock when I touched my mouse. But then I used the mouse with no problem for ~30 min. ?? Any ideas?

Answer:Mouse & keyboard don't work after startup

Static shock from your mouse? And soo... your mouse is made of some metal alloy? Is it a PS/2 keyboard or USB connection? You might try unplugging them both once Windows starts booting up. Then put both plugs back in once it's all loaded and restart the computer. By doing this, you are looking for evidence that Windows reinitialized at least the USB drivers for the mouse. You might also try a System Restore.

something similiar with me one time
remove everything from computer (power, mouse, keyboard, speakers, modem , anything physically connected to the PC) Now press and hold the power button on the PC for about 25 - 30 secs.
reconnect the mouse, monitor, keyboard and power
now turn on PC and see if this will help, if so shut down properly and connect your other devices
Turn on to make sure still working

By doing this, you release any static electricity that may be in the computer
Hope this works

Hello, i have windows XP and i have been trying to reboot my computer in safe mode in order to remove all the junk/ads/spyware off my computer efficiently. However, when I try to press f8 at startup, my computer doesn't work. Even at the configuration screen that appears after rebooting like 4 times, it doesn't work... The only time it seems to work is after its booted up. Can someone give me some advice on fixing this problem, or removing all the junk thats infesting my computer? it would be much appreciated, my e mail is [email protected],
thanks

Answer:keyboard wont work at startup

Hello manvin and Welcome to TSF sometimes you really have to time it right when you hit the F8 key but if you're still having problems accessing Safe Mode or Last Known Good Configuration give this a try

Recovery Console: In the progression of repair items for XP, Recovery Console is the next logical step if Last Known Good Configuration and Safe Mode have failed in allowing the system to boot. As Microsoft states, "This method is recommended only if you are an advanced user who can use basic commands to identify and locate problem drivers and files."

Access the Recovery Console: Start the computer with the Windows XP installation CD in the CD drive. When prompted during text-mode setup, press R to start the Recovery Console.

Sometimes when I start up my computer nothing happens when I try to type. Then when I reboot it works. It seems to happen if I move the mouse during startup. If I don't move the mouse it starts up normally.

It also seems to have started doing this when I made some changes in my Kaspersky Anti Virus. I updated to version 5.0.227 from 5.0.142 and also I changed the automatic update schedule from once a day to every 3 hours.

The man at the Kaspersky forum suggested I disable the "Protection from network attacks" feature. They said I should because I also run ZoneAlarm Pro and there could be conflicts. This didn't help.

This is all I've done so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated. You guys have been a big help in the past. Before I started frequenting this forum I had lots of trouble with spyware and viruses and now my internet experience is almost trouble free. Thanks guys.

this is a very very strange problem... i CAN get into the cmos and i can change/edit everything no problem. the keyboard works only in that instance.

however, if i hold down the key to give me the option to boot into safe mode, it will work, then when it gets to the screen where it wants me to choose either boot into safe mode or boot regularly - my keyboard is powered off/doesnt work and it times out and loads windows normally.

also if i put in my windows xp startup cd, and it gives me the boot up screen/timeout clock, it iwll not let me use the arrow keys to choose an option.

its a regular logitech usb keyboard. i have an amd athalon 2600+ cpu and abit kd7a keyboard i believe.

please help quick its important!!!

sorry i have already figured out the problem.

So he installed a bunch of software even though he does not know what it is? There's the problem. Seriously though. OK let's see, it's a Dell PC. Try to find the Dell Operating system or restore disc. If you do not have it, call them up and ask for one. Also usually PC manufacturers put a recovery partition on the Hard drive. Look for a message when booting that says something like "Press F11 for recovery" or "F12 for boot options". Something along those lines. Dell's website should have the specifics on this. Since you cannot use the keyboard I really cannot suggest anything because it all requires the keyboard.

Hey guys,

It's been a while since I've posted here, so sorry if I posted in the wrong section.

When Windows 8.1 was released, I upgraded my current Windows 8 installation. Overall, it has been a great experience. However, I've run into a couple of strange problems that I have never had before.

The first problem is, whenever I boot into Windows 8.1, my USB devices don't work right away (keyboard and wireless mouse). It doesn't matter if I restart my computer or have just turned it on. In order to get the keyboard to respond, I have to unplug and plug back in the cord. It's very annoying to have to do this every time I boot Windows.

The second problem is, while Windows is logging in, I get a UAC prompt. The UAC prompt says "Service Control Manager Configuration Tool". This prompt also happens every single time I log on, which is also very annoying.

I have checked my startup programs and have found nothing obvious that could solve these problems, but maybe I'm missing something.

Does anyone have any ideas? Have these problems happened before? I really would prefer not to do a clean install since everything else is working perfectly and it's not slow at all.

Thanks guys for the help !

When I bought my wife a new Lenovo ThinkCentre M700 (Windows 7 Pro downlevel)  a year ago, I also ordered a Unicomp USB keyboard to replace her IBM Model M PS/2 keyboard, and a Planar monitor to replace her IBM T56A pivoting monitor. Everything arrived and worked great. A couple of weeks ago she decided she wanted to use her old Model M PS/2 keyboard, as it fitted her small hands better. Since the M700 has PS/2 ports for both a keyboard and mouse, I plugged in the PS/2 keyboard, but it wouldn't type. I searched the web and one suggestion was to unplug the keyboard and shutdown the PC, plug in the PS2 keyboard and boot. I tried that and still didn't work. I was at my wits end. I search Lenovo for possible PS/2 updates, but found nothing. I was ready to tell her it wouldn't work, when I decided when all else fails, restart the PC. After the restart, the PS/2 keyboard worked. The problem is if she powers off her M700, and reboots later, she has to then restart the M700 to get the keyboard to work. I tried buying a PS/2 to USB conntector, but when I plug it in, I eitgher get eror messages about a bad USB port, or it may say devive driver not found, device ready to use. But the keyboard never works in USB mode. Has anyone else seen a problem like this? You would think a PC with a PS/2 port for a PS/2 keyboard would support a PS/2 keyboard. I am open to all suggestions, except for using the new USB keyboard. She would rather live with the occasion... Read more

Hello all,

Having a very strange problem and I've looked everywhere for a solution.

Problem:
Monitor and keyboard are not functioning. When I boot up they work for a few seconds while the Dell desktop loads, then after loading XP the monitor goes to standby and the lights on the keyboard turn off. Safe mode works however. My computer was running all night, and I came to get it out of standby and it wouldn't react.

My attempts at solving:
-unplugged power supply, monitor, and keyboard
-rebooted
-tried restoring settings from a previous day (still went to monitor standby)

I'm really worrying it's a virus, and one I'd have no idea how to remedy. Any have suggestions?

Thank you.

Now my machine boots alright but the Keyboard and Touchpad are not working. I tried system recovery but i dont have a saved point as i had recently done a clean install of windows7
