'Restart' better than turn off and turn back on?

Question: 'Restart' better than turn off and turn back on?

If I turn the laptop off and back on again, like next morning etc the dongle doesn't connect to the internet, but if i then restart it, the dongle connects.

Why is this? anything else I can do?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Microsoft team,
We need for an application to unplug and replug usb3 - not physically but with a program.
We checked a lot on the internet but did not find answer how to do it in windows 8.1 pro (in c++).
We know that hibernation creates something alike, but how can we only turn down the power of usb3 and return the power back on back via program (in c++).
Thank you for your help.

Running Windows Vista Ultimate.

Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email.

Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working.

What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?

Answer:Vista Ultimate x64: turn off display, will not turn back on

sounds like your display drivers are crashing.

Do not rely on windows update drivers - go to graphics chipset manufacturer website and get latest drivers

Once again the computer impaired one comes to the table of knowledge...

I shut down my PC, fans stop, lights go out. About 6-8 mins later it starts up again, been doing this for four days now. I ran a virus scan which came out clean. The only way to keep it turned off is to unplug it. The only tinkering I've done lately is to try to open a port on my router (which I didn't get done, forgot password and reset button doesn't work). I don't think my PC is set to hibernate, I have never used that feature.

Is there something I should check?

Thanks!

It seemed to freeze up so I did the three button and thing and it started to come on. I put it on the charger and went about my business but when I came back to get it, it would not turn back on and nothing I tried worked. What can I do?

Answer:All of a sudden my phone went dead and won't turn back on at all, how do it get it to come back on?

Not much details to help here. But you can try soft-reset. If that doesn't work, leave it for a while half an hour or so and then plug in the charger. Let's see if it boots. In case your phone has removable battery, remove it for while and try powering on.

Hi, a couple of things I don't know how to fix:When I try to restart or turn off Windows, it gets to the 'windows is shutting down' screen but doesn't actually turn off. Does anyone know why/how to fix please? Also when I first press restart/turn off I get the 'End Now/Cancel' timer box that says EAXModule is still running - but I have no idea what this is. I have a creative X-Fi Fatal1y soundcard but don't have the front panel connected up, it's in Entertainment mode all the time but EAX is not switched on - any ideas please?I have also had the same type of box but with DLLsomething instead of EAXModule?Any ideas would be great.

I have a Dell desktop w/ windows xp home. When I try to restart, It gets to a blue windows screen that says bios revision 1.1.2 and the bar freezes half way across, nothing will get out of it. I have to turn off the Cpu and then start the whole machine again, It will work then. Can't create a new restore point, bacause it automatically "restarts" which of course doesn't work. HELP

Answer:Can't restart, have to turn off at cpu and start.

Hi,

System restore points won't help you here because the problem is not at operating system level. There seems to be an issue when the computer is booting up which is at a lower level.

Firstly, try getting into the BIOS, usually by pressing Delete or F2 just before it freezes (it might say on the screen which key to press to enter Setup). Then, see if there is an option to restore factory defaults or similiar and then press F10 and enter to save changes.

Let me know how you get on and if it doesn't work, I might have to guide you through some more advanced solutions.

Regards,

Matthew.

My newly built pc sometimes goes into a loop when i turn it on. I press the button it would go to the screen, where it says abit, press delete to go into bios etc. and it would restart. The way i have found to getting it to stop this, is to turn it off by the power supply, and turn it back on. I would have to do this a couple of times for it to work, but how do i stop it from doing this.

Also sometimes, after a few restarts, the screen would go blank and the motherboard speaker would make a siren noise (high, low, high, low) I have not left it on to see if it ends, as it gives me a headache.

How could i fix this

Answer:restart loop when i turn it on

That happens with my old one too. It seems to be that the cpu gets too hot, but I could be wrong.

Oddly, when I go to Start - Turn Off - Turn Off (or Restart) nothing at all appears to happen. It isn't a delay, 'cos I've tried leaving the machine in that state for a long time. However, if I carry out exactly the same procedure again, immediately or later, it works correctly. Every time! Not a problem, as it always does perform on the second attempt, I just wondered if anyone had any idea why it does this (or doesn't)?PS XP Home with all updates, SPs etc.ThanksCol

This has now happened five or six times. I was using Rabb.it, a site similar to Skype when it first happened. I had not had my webcam on but did have my mic on. The other person was using both her mic and webcam. It seems to have only happened whenever I was using this site, but only on this lap top. My desktop at home doesn't have this issue with Rabb.it, and neither did my  prior lap top, so I believe it is possibly caused by videocalling alone. The first thing I notice is that I become dissconnected from her, and then I will be informed that I'm no longer connected to the internet. Whenever I click the Internet Access icon on the bottom right side of the screen it will load for awhile, then say, "no Networks available" when I know for a fact that there are networks available.  The "Wi-Fi" option next to "Airplane Mode" also disappears. When I try to click on "Network settings" there is no Wi-Fi options and it opens up on VPN options, which I do not use VPN. Sometimes I found that it will not allow me to click on anything in the Start menu, or the "Ask me anything" menu. I have to click ctrl, alt and delete to be able to get the options of shutting down, restarting, or sleeping. Whenever I press "Sleep", it will not let me go back to anything and the screen stays black. Whenever I choose "Restart", the screen goes black and even after hours, nothing happens or changes, and the computer does not turn off. And when I choose  "Shut Down", the screen stays b... Some time ago, probably couple months ago I update my motherboard and ever since I have not been able to start my computer in one go. I have no knowledge of computers or how to fix them so I haven't been trying anything. the issue is when I turn my computer on it doesn't turn my monitor on or my mouse (the computer itself is running), so I need to hold the power button to turn it on and go into bios settings, select the drive I want to use to turn it on and only then it comes on. From the little knowledge, I have I'm more than positive I have the hard drive with the system used as a default drive to boot the PC up. I was also told that I could try to update my bios settings but I fear of it destroying my motherboard due to this issue, any help would be appreciated.

I purchased a brand new HP probook laptop last year in July(2016), it was working fine and perfectly(I used it for 9 months without any error), 2 months ago,I was working on it, then suddenly I got notification "you must restart your computer to turn off user account control" and it restarted automatically, After restart, this screen starts appearing and I was unable to do any thing after this screen

I contacted the shop owner(I have in-voice slip), he tried below things
1: Re-install windows 3-4 times
2: Re-install BIOS
But every time, this screen start appearing as soon as I connect to internet.
Finally, I claimed warranty and they replaced its motherboard, I was just using it gave me the same warning and restarted again, and after restarting, this screen starts appearing.
I tried contacting this company but no response from them.
Please suggest me what should I do?If the company is the owner of this pc,then how it worked till 9 months? Also what should I do to make it work again(or remove ownership of the company)

Answer:You must restart your pc to turn off user account

I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 that runs Vista Home Premium. Whenever I update anything that requires a restart I have to manually shut it down first, then turn the laptop on again. I think this is the reason it will not properly install SP1. I have downloaded it numerous times. It says it the installation was "successfull" but then it shows up again on my windows update and it never shows up on my computer's "System Properties" as running SP1. I have reinstalled Vista numerous times as well and get the same results so the version of Vista that I currently run is not up to date. Can't even install SP1. Please help!!!!

Answer:Windows XP Stuck In Restart & Turn Off!!!

It possible for you to run any programs? If so, try Process Explorer, it may point to what is using up the CPU. I use a program called Process Lasso to catch software that may use 100% of the CPU and lock up. You can check it out here: http://www.bitsum.com/prolasso.php

At this point, we have to deduce what it isn't.

My system is not shut down or restart.
plz Help me

Answer:Turn off and restart the system failure

Before you attempt anything either backup or save important documents, etc. to a removable drive/disc.

Could you give some more information, such as how you are trying to restart/shutdown? Have you run Malwarebytes and/or a virus scanner? Have you recently installed updates? How long has this problem been going on (you can try System Restore back to a date before the problem started)? Can you manually shut the system down by holding down the Power button? If you can then I would assume you can restart it. Assuming it will manually shut down then I'd do the following:

Start > Run > chkdsk /F. Command prompt will ask you if you want to check the volume at your next startup. Type Y and then manually shut down your computer > restart. Depending on what you've got on your computer this could take quite a bit of time so only do this when you have the time available.

Hello. I'm new on this site so hi to everyone and I hope you can help. I've seen a few posts along these lines but not exactly the same so -

Got a new PC from Evesham a couple of weeks ago - Core Duo E6400 / 2GB RAM . Worked fine but was supposed to have 2 x 200GB HD but only one fitted.
Evesham sent engineer with new drive on Tuesday.
But he couldn't physically installl the drive as intended as he wasn't given a bracket (the front panel USB cables inhibit installing it horizontally in the cage below fitted HD).
It was agreed that he would set the disk up on the system and arrange for the bracket and fixings to be sent out for me to fit myself.
Meanwhile the drive sits on the worksurface at the side of the case ( side panel is removed - who mentioned EMC ? ).
Engineer left disk to format - which it did . No apparent problem and PC used as normal.

But later I needed to Restart the PC when I was setting up some audio I/O.
The PC shut down but did not restart.
Testing / Observation since shows that it won't run successfully from Restart or if even I Turn Off then power back on within a short time ( I'm talking a minute or more - plenty of time for PSU to discharge etc.)
It always starts up but will shut off completely after a variable period - sometimes it will get through to showing desktop icons and it appears to be fine but then turns off.
When I say turn off I mean the power just goes off - fans ( case and processor / graphics ) s... Read more

Answer:PC shuts off after recent turn off / restart

It shouldnt make a difference if the second drive is attached or not, so long as you still have one hdd attached with an os. Theoretically speaking it is unlikely that the drive is causing this problem, with hdd faults you usually find that the drive simply will not be detected, or the pc will freeze / display read-write errors. However I am experiencing similar issues myself and havnt been able to completely rule out the drive as of yet.

So I recently uninstalled this Hedgebuilders filtering software that we had on the computer for middle school years (I'm now in college, go figure).

The problem is, after doing that, and doing a Winsock repair, I cannot restart the computer. Any time I try to restart it, after loading the Gateway splash screen, when it SHOULD ask me which configuration I want to use (I have one that disables the bells and whistles of XP when I want to game since my computer is so old ), instead I get maybe 10-11 weird ALT characters like "A╬t╙+"...stuff like that.

The only way my computer properly starts up is if I select shutdown on the start menu then turn the computer on, or if I hard shutdown.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Desktop computer (made to order) running Win XP home (SP3) and suddenly I cannot go 'Start'>'Turn Off Computer'> 'Standby' or 'Restart'. The keyboard 'Sleep' button won't work either although it would beforehand.
'Standby' simply hangs at "saving your settings" (first time it stayed there for 1/2 hour, nothing happened so I turned of the power) , 'Restart' goes right through the process but doesn't start back up. The light on the start button remains on but, after either 'Standby'  or 'Restart', I have to switch power off/on at the wall outlet, then press the computer start button to go again.
'Turn Off' works as it should .
This all happened after I re-installed a program that hadn't worked properly since it was first installed, about 3 years ago. Its not a prog that can be uninstalled as it hooks itself into another program in order to work and doesn't show up in the installed list.
I'm hoping there is a 'fix' for the problem, rather than requiring reinstall, as the computer came with a preloaded O/S and no backup disc. The guy who made the comp. gave me an XP disc after I complained but I don't know if it's a genuine disc or not and I'm not game to try it.

Hi all,

I just checked through the search forum to see if anyone had a similar issue but could not find.

I recently installed Windows 7 (32-bit) onto my Gen 3 Dell XPS desktop. Installation was okay and everytime the computer restarted (during install) I had to manually shut it off and turn on again to continue the installation. I'm currently using Windows 7 and it seems like everything is working (except my sound, but that's another issue).

The problem is whenever I restart the computer it gets stuck on the Dell startup screen (Dell logo with the 'loading' grey bar). Again, I manually turn it off and then turn on again and it works fine. Does anyone know why that happens? If anyone can help me any bit or link me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

With thanks,
Ed

Answer:Can shutdown/turn on fine; but cannot restart

Hi Ed. . .

A few items to do that may yield some clues -

1. Reset power options to default settings -
START | type power | select "Power Options"

2. Enable boot logging via msconfig -
START | msconfig | select "Boot" tab | check box "Boot Log" | Apply | OK
--> boot log will be in c:\windows\ntbtlog.txt starting with next boot-up. Please get it and attach to post

3. System Info - Event Logs, msinfo32, registry dumps, PERFMON Health Report, systeminfo.exe, etc... The fastest way to gather all - the BSOD System Information gathering batch script -

--> BSOD Posting Instructions

Attach the zipped output folder + the boot log to next post.

Regards. . .

Answer:Can I Turn Off External Drive During Scan After Restart

Well I took a chance. I turned off the external hard drive and forced a shut down of the computer. I restarted the computer and got a "Attempting to restart ... installation" message. It quickly restarted again, and after about 20 sec. resumed the installation.

Lesson learned: Turn off external hard drives before installing a major update. I have since found several websites that recommend this, but the update itself does not warn to do so and probably should, since you don't have to do with other Windows Updates.

Hi! I have a Dell inspiron 14z and randomly this afternoon I went to turn on my laptop, and after the Dell logo screen appears, a black screen with "Press ctrl + alt + del to restart" appears (It does not boot to the Windows screen). There is no other error message or anything else on the screen, and when I follow the instructions it just keeps bringing me back to the same screen. I have tried turning it on and off with the power button, tried using the diagnostics tool via f12 on the Dell logo screen. I have read that by pressing f8, I will be able to enter the screen to reset the laptop back to an earlier time, however f8 doesn't seem to work. I have tried pressing it rapidly upon restarting, pressing it slowly, and holding it down multiple times and nothing happens, it just brings me to the same error screen. Any help would be much appreciated!

It could be an issue with your power settings or even a heat problem, can you give us more information as the information you have given is vague at best. Describe exactly what happens when your computer has been off for one hour and then you start it. Be as detailed as possible.

Answer:Turn off auto restart in recovery console?

Not that I know of.

I have to assume it does the same thing in Safe Mode, when choosing either the Administrator profile or your own?

Are you rebooting automatically or do you see a message that you are being "logged off"?

For the former, you may be able to recover by following the instructions in the attached .doc

Ok I have no idea what is going on with this computer and I am very very tired of trying to figure it out.

I've the following programs and have used them often: CCleaner, IOBIT (Advanced Care, Smart Defrag, etc), Microsoft Security Essentials, UnLocker, SuperAntiSpyware

I have the following browsers IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera

When using a browser (pick one) it....."stalls" I guess is what you call it, it just won't go to a page, always looks like it's loading, etc. I close it and when I try to reopen it says that the browser is still running and can't open another. When browsing I also can not play games like on I-Am-Bored.com, I can't get drop down menus to work, etc. After this, I also can not get the computer to shut down or restart (have to press the power button) and occassionally it gives me a pop up error about NsAppShell:Event something.

Please help me solve this problem once and for all.

I have tried uninstalling browsers and reinstalling.

Thank you in advance!

^Sorry about that post being so sloppy, I posted this about 3 minutes before my workplace closed and my boss was in a hurry to get everyone out and lock the doors. This problem is on my computer at work.

Answer:Browsers Stalling, Comp Won't Restart/Turn Off, etc.

Can you post the full error that it's giving you?

I found that Firefox's add-ons can be causing the issues you're experiencing, but I'm not sure if that's the case with your PC...

Try booting into "Safe Mode With Networking" to see if the problem persists.

Hi to anyone reading this (my first ever post, anywhere) & an upfront thank you to anyone that takes the time to help me out.

My problem is this- A friends HDD died the other week so I offered to try & fix it for him (not knowing it was the HDD at the time, he said it just wont boot). Long story short, retrieved what i could from drive, bought new (to us) HDD, went through the whole process , am sure you all know well, installation of wxp pro, all M/S updates inc sp3, FireFox browser with many addons/extensions all tweaked to preferred settings, many general programs like esset nod 32, Google toolbar/desktop, vlc media player, power point viewer, adobe, apple stuff, quick time, drive health, emule, rar, messenger, mbsa, silverlite, nvidia driver, office viewer & on & on so as you can guess the whole thing took me some time to do & as i consider myself new to the world of PCs i was pretty chuffed with myself,
NOTE: I have not yet put ANYTHING from old HDD onto this one, it was only a baby 20 gig drive & more than half of that was empty so it was a tiny quick job.
I called him to tell him the good news, all done & will be ready for him later that evening so thought id do a general clean up as to give it him back in top condition even though it was only about 5 days old but it had been through a fair bit of activity in that time so my plan was to do the following in this order-

1, run esset nod 32 deep virus check,
2, run wxp preinstalled ... Read more

In the meantime, if you click canel, Windows? will ignore the fact that there are later versions of the files on thew computer and leave them.

http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.php#0x44Since this error is usually a hardware driver issue - and it's directly associated with your printer - I'd suggest that you uninstall your printer drivers and then install the latest version available from the HP site here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwar...g=en&os=228Download the Software Cleanup Utility and run it: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwar...item=oj-11696-6Then download the driver and run it: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwar...item=mp-19447-3NOTE: If your printer is a 1210 v or a 1210 xi there may be different software for it. Answer:Satellite A100 - Monitor turn off after restart

Hey mate,

If you have the same problem on an external monitor I think it?s related to the mainboard or something else. It shouldn?t be a problem of the internal monitor I think?

It?s really hard to say something about this but you could try updating the display driver and BIOS. Both you can find on the Toshiba website.
Check this!!

Furthermore it would be interesting to know which OS you are using. Preinstalled OS from Toshiba?

My computer isn't restarting when I press that restart button..... or the shut off one =[..... I have to keep shutting it down via the buttons on my actual computer and that kinda sucks. I first noticed it doing this three or four days ago when Homeworld 2 froze on me, and it would not work... it did it a second time, but Homeworld 2 had froze on me again! But now it's doing it regaurdless of if Homeworld 2 is open or not...

Also, I've done virus scans and the such, I just installed the new version of AVG and the new version of Ad-Aware so I'm pretty covered in those areas. Did full scans too with updated pattern files.. What's wrong? =[

Answer:>start>turn off computer>restart isn't working (XP)

Boot into safe mode and do a full system virus scan and ad-aware. Than see if you can shutdown/reboot properly from safe mode.

I'm baffled.

Had to reinstall Windows XP. It appears there are issues with SP2 involving the video graphics card and the sound. Now I'm stuck. I thought that if I chose "do not use this device" under "Device usage" on the display adaptor tab, that it would pick the right adaptor.

Anyway, my screen went blank and I tried to reboot in safe mode and it sticks at mup.sys. I disabled mup and it now sticks at "nid" something or other.

I got the bright idea to use "Windows Narrator" to try and reenable the adaptor but I think the reinstall or the SP2 killed my sound.

Now I'm really stuck. Is there a way to reenable VGA adaptor from the command prompt in recovery mode?

Last night, my computer turned off while I was using it. It wouldn't turn back on, and everything else on the surge protector was working fine. Since I've had problems with power supplies before, I turned the switch to the off position, removed the power cord, and let it cool off, in case it had overheated. When I tried to turn it back on, the power light and the LEDs on the inside blinked on and then back off. They were on for maybe a tenth of a second. During that time, there's no sound of my computer trying to turn on or anything, just the lights. Does anybody have any idea what this might be, or where to begin to troubleshoot??

btw, I know I mentioned LEDs, but I don't have any extensive mods, no overclocking, etc. Just pretty lights.

TIA for any help!!

Before I remove a device from USB (especially flash drives) I've been turning it off.

Good enough.

But how do I turn it back on? I can restart my computer, which does it, but that is a bit extreme I think.

It is probably something incredibly simple, but I'm missing it.

Just got a TomTom for Christmas, unplugged the wireless controller my boy was testing out, but now I'm going to have to reset this computer to test my TomTom it appear.

He gets to play with his Wii, I get to play with my TomTom. Life is like that sometimes.

Answer:How to turn USB back on

OK, it isn't a power issue. Thinking about it the power came up OK, but after recycling the computer it saw the new device (which it didn't before).

I suspect device manager is the key, but something isn't quite right.

I timed it, and boot after restart takes much more time than just turning off and on. Am I only one experiencing this?

Answer:Restart boot speed is slower than shutdown-then-turn-on?

No, The new hybrid boot technology that Windows 8 use's does not affect Restarts.
Only full shut downs and powering on, that the speed of starting up is fast.

So if you restart you Windows 8, it'll take longer to start.
But if you shut it down like normal it'll start faster.

I am attempting to reinstall Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on an HP Pavillion DV6 laptop. Initial re-install went ok, but on reboot I am getting a quick BSOD with error messages, then going to the Restart options menu (Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, etc.) Turning off the Auto Restart after System Failure is not one of the options on the menu. I seem to remember a year or so ago reading that I could put a switch into the config.sys or another startup file to manually turn the Auto Restart off, but have googled extensively and can't find it.

FYI, I had the same problem on a previous reinstall attempt, so I know this is not just an issue that came up during this reinstall. I know the ISO I am installing from is ok. I have run all the built in system diagnostics and am getting no errors with memory, HD, etc. Also, I was able to successfully install the 32 bit version, but the machine came from the factory with 64 bit installed, and all the driver files @ the HP website are for the 64 bit version. I want to return it to the client in as close to original condition as possible. She does not have any backup or system restore disks.

Any help would be most appreciated. TY

Answer:How to manually turn off Auto Restart after System Failure

Disable restart on system failure should be one of the options on the F8 advanced boot options menu. Advanced Boot Options
Windows 7 does not use a config.sys file.

Hi. I'm new to this forum, but not to computers. And this is weird...

I recently started trying out Windows 10. It's buggy and frustrating, but it's still in preview mode, so... That's expected.

Nothing was working when I installed build 10074 off disc, so I installed build 9926 off a disc (I got the iso from MSDNAA, I'm a programming student) then upgraded via settings to 10074.
During the upgrade, my laptop started resetting, normal. But halfway through, the resets stopped working.
The screen switches off, the cd drive switches off and the hdd activity light switches off, but the power stays on, and the fan keeps running. It also doesn't switch off on shutdown either.

I finally have a working version of Windows 10, minus Cortana and Spartan (I'm in Aus), but now my laptop won't shut down.

Has anyone else had this problem? Could it be drivers? Is it OS interference? Is there a way to fix it without uninstalling and re installing Win 10? I really cbf going through all that again...

Thanks in advance...

Answer:Laptop won't turn off or restart properly since Windows 10 upgrade

Have you tried going to Control Panel>Power Options? Within Power Options, there are settings you can change that might correct the problem.

If it were me, I would put Windows 10 Build 10074 on a flash drive using Rufus (an 8 GB drive will do), and do a clean installation of Build 10074, rather than go through upgrading. A clean install is so much faster than an update.

USB Flash Drive; go to USB Flash Drive - Create to Install Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

Hi guys!

New here, just put Windows 7 on my laptop on Sunday. I'm really liking it thus far.

One thing I noticed maybe just today. When the screen shuts off due to time or the lid being closed, it doesn't seem to want to turn back on. I can put into standby and bring it back out and it works just fine. But, I'd rather not have to do that all the time.

It's a Dell Inspiron E1505 with a ATI Radeon X1400 video card if that helps at all.

If you need more info, let me know. Thanks!

Answer:Screen won't turn back on

Hi daroga and welcome,

This tutorial from Brink will show you what the power option settings are and from where to access them.
Sometimes coming out of standby, etc doesn't work right. You can turn all of it off if you desire to.

Hi,This problem is driving me crazy.  It has already caused me to lose hours of work. I have a tablet x201.  When I leave the computer for a while and come back, the screen is blank (the computer is not asleep) and there is no way to bring it back without forcefully restarting the machine (i.e. lose every unsaved change). I have tried every button on the keyboard, yet the screen remains blank. Please help.  I'm this close from tossing this machine out the window.  This is very frustrating.

Answer:Screen Won't turn back On

Sometimes the brigthness on these laptops just goes all the way down without any reason. Just try Fn-Home and see if that brings the display back. Next you can also try Fn-F7 and cycle through the display mode in case that switched without a reason.

Hi,
I've just recently had this happen, but I've been here enough to know I may have contracted a nasty.

Last week my system started hanging up and plain not responding. My wireless aircard refused to work in a manner like it was telling me that it was already in use, when it wasn't even plugged in! I couldn't get much to work right so I rebooted in safe mode, ran a couple of scans, which found nothing, rebooted in normal mode and my aircard was working again. Yay.
It worked normal except for the Windows pop up box that says you are offline kept popping up, and I couldn't close it unless I connected to the net via my aircard. Now my AVG has been switched off and I can't get it to turn back on, and my surfing via aircard is noticably slower. And, my power icon in the tray has gone away.

I have a Toshiba Satellite P-105, 32 bit processor, Vista Home Premium, SP 1.
I also have A Squared, AdAware, AVG (free edition), Malware Bytes, Spybot, SuperAntiSpyware installed.

I use this laptop for work and now I'm afraid to put in passwords, account numbers, etc.

Thanks,
Steve

Answer:My AVG has been turned off and I can't turn it back on!

Just an update.
I downloaded + ran the Kaspersky scanner and it found nothing, but yet I've lost the power icon and the internet connection icons in the task tray.
It still get a black screen for a long time on start up from sleep mode.

I'm not sure if I'm infected, or have something going wrong.

Any thoughts? Ideas?

Answer:My cybershot won't turn back on

Sony camera problem.

This could be happening for several reasons. The camera could have a software /firmware fault, or it could be a problem with something preventing the lens from moving as it should.
But it's just as likely to be the Li-ion battery not holding a charge as it used to.
If you have a mains adapter, try that instead of the battery, see if it works then.
You may need to buy a new battery, as they don't last for more than a couple of years, especially with heavy use.
If you can get the screen on using the mains adapter, go into the menu and do a 'factory reset'. Take the memory stick out first.
All faults are repairable, but you would do well to get a quote first, as a new camera may be cheaper, (unfortunately).
The pictures on your memory stick are not affected by camera faults, as a rule, but if you have another one, try it, just in case there is a problem with the edge connector on it.

Hi. I have a Epson Workforce WF-3640 printer. I was in the middle of printing out my son's term paper, when I heard it stop working. Noticed it was off. Tried to turn back on. Nothing. Check cord to make sure connected securely at back of printer and at outlet. Also check for a tripped breaker. And nothing. I just bought this brand new from Best Buy in February. Please help.
Thank-You

Answer:Printer won't turn back on

If the printer is getting any power I would try:

A different outlet.
A different power cord.
Checking to see if the printer is still under warranty with the manufacturer and/or Best Buy.

I recent bought a new PC, with Windows 7.  I gave my old PC (still in great shape), with Windows XP Professional, to a friend who lives 200 miles away. While mostly a novice, he is getting along well with it except for one issue -  sound.  With my phone and email help he bought and installed a pair of Logitek speakers using the "pea green" stereo output jack on the PC.  He receives the Windows sign-on music loud and clear each time he turns the PC on.  However, when he surfs to a website which includes audio with the visual (you tube, etc.) he sees the visual information, but hears no audio.  I was using the PC, when I had it, to input and edit external audio, and I had probably reset some of the software switching. Working with him on the phone, I have not been able to talk him through the sound windows to effect a fix, since I can't see his XP screen. Can someone provide us a step by step sequence of instructions (click START, click CONTROL PANEL, click...) to go into the software, and reconnect audio coming from internet sources to the speakers?

Answer:Need help to turn audio back on.

Go to control panel. Select "System". Select hardware tab. Select "device manager". Scroll down to sound, video controllers. Open sound video controllers. Is there a yellow circle with an exclamation point in it? If so, your missing a sound card, or on board sound driver.

Before I found all of the USeful info here on the
MSblast virus I was trying to fix the problem of the RPC restarting my computer..

It got to the point where I disabled the RPC in the COMPUTER MANAGEMENT Tool under services for my one and only hardware profile.. DOh..not a smart move...

Now when I start up, either in normal or safe mode,
most of my critical windows services just dont run.

My question is this :

Is there a way to get these services started up or enable them again so I can run windows normally and apply the MSblast fix.?

Basically, I think XP needs the RPC service to even consider allowing me to enable it again..
Thanks for any help.

Answer:I disabled RPC ..doh...any help to turn it back on..

I am adding to this forum because this is May 4, 2016 and the problem has been noted on the forum since October 2015. If I had read the forum prior to purchasing, I would not have purchased this laptop or I would have investigated to be certain the problem has been fixed. I am sooooo disappointed in HP.I really don't know what to do now.

Toshiba Satellite laptop, model M40-M45I was/am having on going problems with the shift key (but that's another story).  In an effort to resolve that issue, I follwed a suggestion to disable the touchpad.  Like an idiot I did, and now my laptop is useless because I have no way to get the cursor moving.  Please tell me there's something I can do!  Any ideas?  Please!

Answer:Need to turn touchpad back on

According to this there is an inbuilt utility to enable/disable the touchpad.I don't know the name of the utility but looks likely you can get a copy here.Edit:  But wait, there's more...  There are Toshiba forums here, one of them specifically for the Satellite range.  Not trying to get rid of you but you might like to register there and post your query for the Satellite buffs.Good luck

Hello, I recently got a Thinkpad P51(about a month ago). I was working on battery today and the laptop just turned off - no warning about low battery either. It won't turn on again. I tried the following- plugging in the AC power and use the power button to turn it on- Removing AC, battery and hold the power button for 30secs and plug them back in But the laptop won't turn back on. I don't see any lights(even the little red thinkpad LED doesn't blink) nor hear any beeps.  Can any one suggest a quick troubleshoot for this?  Thanks

Answer:P51 turned off on it's own and won't turn back on

You probably have a warranty.  This sounds like the time to use it.  In U.S. 1-800-426-7378

I hooked up my ThinkPad Edge to an external large monitor, so I turned off the ThinkPad's screen display. Now I need to turn it back on. How do I do that?

Answer:HELP! How do I turn my screen back on?

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Change the display output location by using the dedicated hotkey. This allows you to switch between viewing output on the external display, the computer display, and both displays.

Different models have different key combinations. Please let me know the exact model of yours so that I can be more specific.

Best regards,
Mithun.
