My Toshiba Satellite touchpad suddenly stopped working

Question: My Toshiba Satellite touchpad suddenly stopped working

I went to use my laptop today, and I discovered that the touchpad has stopped working. In fact, I was unable to even get past the sign-on screen, and if it weren't for the fact that I got a mouse arrow with a plug-in USB mouse, the laptop would be completely dead to me.

My son uses the laptop for Minecraft gaming, but I don't think that has anything to do with this. Even a reboot didn't change anything. I wonder if a Windows update screwed something up (again)? I'm at a loss. I'm not always where I can set up a physical mouse to use - and frankly I don't want to have to.

Any suggestions?

Preferred Solution: My Toshiba Satellite touchpad suddenly stopped working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: My Toshiba Satellite touchpad suddenly stopped working

Found the solution. When I pressed the F5 button (not Fn + F5), I got a popup that said "touchpad disabled." When I pressed it again, it said "touchpad enabled." I unplugged my USB mouse and tried again, and it's now working. What a screwed up design that allows a user to accidentally disable one's touchpad with an accidental press of the F5 key. Then you have to research the problem before figuring out the problem. Someone in the Toshiba laptop design department should be fired.

Hi,
I have a Satellite L50Dt-A, part no. PSKM2A. It is running Windows 8.1.

Last night the touch pad suddenly stopped working, no curser on the screen.
The little mouse indicator on the touch pad wasn't and still isn't glowing.
So I've pressed the Fn F5 button so many times, but that hasn't turned it back on.

I went to the mouse properties in the control panel, and under hardware there is nothing listed.
In the device manager, there is nothing under mouse either.
So I went to the Toshiba site and downloaded the driver for the touchpad.

However, on installing, it said it can't because the computer already has one.
I need to uninstall it and reinstall.
However, I can't find the original synaptics touchpad driver anywhere to uninstall.

Everything is updated through windows update, and I have ran the trouble shooting tools, and have restarted, and nothing so far has worked.

I have since plugged in an external mouse so I can use that.
But I would love my touchpad mouse working again.

Any help you can give me would be much appreciated.

Thank you

>Last night the touch pad suddenly stopped working...
I?ve never been faced with such problem but try at first to roll back OS to earlier time using system restore just to see what will happen.

In the whole story it is confusing that touchpad is not listed in device manager under ?Mice and other pointing devices?.

I have been using both the touchpad and usb mouse together successfully for many months then first the touchpad stopped responding then 30 minutes later the pad buttons quit working.

I have been in control panel and made sure the touchpad is turned on, tried it with the mouse unplugged, nada.

Any ideas?

I've had my Thinkpad R60 for a couple of years now, and just a couple of days ago, the touchpad completely stopped working. To be clear, I'm talking about the black rectangular touch surface, not the red dot in the middle of the keyboard. I hadn't done anything between the last time I used it and the touchpad worked, and today when I opened it up and the touchpad was dead.Upon poking around the ThinkVantage software, it claimed that my UltraNav driver wasn't installed, or did not exist (depending on which way I tried to access it). I did upgrade the UltraNav software via System Update about a month ago, and didn't think I'd rebooted since then, and I've had System Update drivers break things before, so I tried a Windows System Restore. Long story short, it killed my OS, and I have since restored the laptop to factory settings.Unfortunately, even this complete wipe and reinstall did not fix the touchpad. Even the Thinkpad Configuration app says I have no touchpad that it can see. I've checked the BIOS several times, and the only setting I have for Keyboard/Mouse is whether or not I want it to automatically disable itself when I plug an external mouse in, and it's set how it always has been, at Automatic (the other option would disable the onboard mice completely, I think). Is it possible that I've got a hardware problem, and my thinkpad's touchpad is physically broken? Do I have any way of verifying this? Are there any other possiblities left? Thanks for any advice!

Answer:Touchpad on R60 suddenly stopped working

If you installed the correct drivers and your touchpad is still not functioning, you can try to load the default settings at BIOS level (F1 at boot, then F9 and F10). If you loading the defaults doesn't resolve the issue, then replace the touchpad. (The touchpad is considered part of the palmrest assembly). Hope everything goes well. Mark

If you installed the correct drivers for your touchpad and it still doesnt work, the next step is to try and reset your BIOS settings. Press F1 key at boot to enter the BIOSThen press F9, select "Yes"Then press F10, select "Yes" This will automatically reset your hardware settings, including the trackpoint and touchpad. Let me know if this fixes your problem. Thanks,Mark

I have a new Acer Aspire 1670 laptop which has worked fine for the past few weeks. However, I turned it on this morning (it worked fine last night) to find that my touchpad no longer works.

I don't feel this is a hardware issue in the sense that the touchpad has become unplugged from the internal PS/2 port, because the touchpad works for about 3-4 seconds after I log onto Windows/when the desktop loads up. That's the only time it works, it doesn't even work at the welcome/logon screen.

After those 3-4 seconds, something obviously happens that's preventing it from working.

I thought it might be my Wacom Graphire II graphics tablet, which is plugged in via USB 2. However, my touchpad and tablet have worked fine together for the past few weeks and have never caused any problems.

I unplugged the tablet, and uninstalled the tablet and touchpad drivers. I then rebooted, and - navigating around with the keyboard - reinstalled the touchpad drivers and rebooted. It still won't work.

Any ideas?

Two things:

1. Does the touchpad have an indicator light that shows you when it is activated? The one on my HP does.

2. Is there an On/Off button above the touchpad...there is on my HP. Did you accidently turn it OFF

Answer:Satellite C855D Toshiba DVD player display suddenly stopped displaying

Sorry, but your positing is very confusing?
I have no idea what you changed in the past in the Toshiba DVD player settings but I think the easiest solution would be new installation of Toshiba DVD player Utility.

Usually you could download the Toshiba DVD player from the Toshiba EU driver page
Before installing this software, I recommend to uninstall the installed Toshiba DVD player.
Then reboot the notebook.
Download the tool from the Toshiba website and start the installation.
Finally reboot the notebook and test the functionality.

I have a Toshiba laptop, and it suddenly stopped working,

i mean when it's on, I can only see a black screen with the letters

N
password=**********************

I don?t know who did it , but there is nothing written in the manual I even tried the restore cd which comes with the laptop.
Nothing works at all; i even tried some backdoor passwords

I opened the laptop but didn?t find any kind of battery, there is only one big battery,
How does the bios battery look like?

Answer:Satellite A50-110 suddenly stopped working

Hi

Are you sure this is a BIOS password?
There are two possible passwords: HDD password and BIOS password
Are you able to access the BIOS? You could access the BIOS pressing the ESC button.

Anyway, if this is a BIOS password then you will be not able to remove it without the ASP help.
The BIOS password cannot be removed like on the desktop PCs! The procedure is different?

It?s really strange that the notebook ask for a password if you didn?t set it but as I said above, only the ASP could remove such password.

To start off, I seen another thread about the TouchPad not working but this is a slightly different situation.. First off, it's a really new computer and I'm dual booting windows 10 and linux. Anyways, the TouchPad only works in windows but it randomly stops working every once in a while and I have to go into the mouse settings and re-enable it but what I thought was really weird is that when I go to the efi firmware settings, it doesn't work either.. The mouse cursor is stuck on the left side of the screen and i have to use the keyboard to navigate, even a Bluetooth mouse won't work there.. That tells me that is not a windows issue but that also tells me that is not a hardware issue either because it works in windows when i enable it in the settings.. I also have to use the bluetooth mouse for linux as it doesn't work at all.. I'm not a noob by no means, i fix pc's for a living and i usually have some kind of idea on how to fix issues but this one, i have no idea.. Any help would be great! Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I have a proble: yesterday when I tried to make a call using Skype I found out that my voice cannot be heard. I tried to use other headset, however, it didn't work either. I tried to use sort of Win XP built-in utility for testing sound hardware in sound manager, but it didn't react to.

I installed Sound Forge package to check on some advanced record system - but no result to.

I reinstalled sound and, then, chipset driver - no result. I reinstalled Windows, but I am facing the same problem again. What can be the possible problem? And are there any possible ways for of solution withour help of hardware engineers.
P.S. My laptop is Toshiba L40-12K, OS - Win XP 12K,.

P.P.S. I haven't tryied USB headset, i used to use usual ones, for microphone-audio jacks.

The web cam on my Satellite L850 has suddenly stopped working.

It does not appear in Device Manager;
I've downloaded the latest driver from the Toshiba site;
I've checked BIOS and the web cam is enabled;
Still when I open the web cam application I get the following message:

'webcam initialization failed please restart application and check camera device'

I've scoured the forum boards and short of a back up and reboot from HDD, I can find no reasonable answers. I can't back up as I'm away from home so that's out of the question. I need web cam to conference call/call my family back in UK.

Tired of going around in circles and getting nowhere.

Any suggestions?

About a week ago my Fn+F5 hot key suddenly stopped showing any alternative display types. Now all I have is one option : LCD.
Since then I have tried everything I can think of : Boot with S-Video cable plugged in
Update to latest NVidia Go drivers
Update Bios
(always fully patched on windows update)
There are no BIOS settings for S-Video.

I have tried forcing the external display in the NVidia control panel with no luck.
I noticed that about a week ago a Toshiba update came through windows update - ACPI update. I tried rolling back the driver and that made no difference either. There was no option to uninstall this update, rather I had to go into system and find the item under system devices and roll it back.

I can only think that this or another windows update has done it, though there were no other relevant updates. Just malicious tool updates.

This is driving me round the bend. Has anyone else had this problem or know how to resolve it? I cant watch anything on my TV anymore and I would rather not do a factory re-install.

Answer:Fn+F5 Suddenly stopped working on Satellite A series

Hi

Without clean OS installation it will be problematic to find out why this happen. We can just speculate here but it is not easy to say for sure what the problem can be. As far as I know more switch options are available if notebook ?recognizes? that some external device is connected.
Obviously external device is not recognized properly.

It will be interesting to know which notebook model you have. Have you tested FN+F5 option with external monitor connected to VGA port?

How about the external USB mouse? Does it work properly?
Did you test the touchpad without connected USB mouse?

Maybe the touchpad has been disabled?
Did you check if you can enable the touchpad using key combination FN + F9 (on some models this function has been changed to FN + F5)?

You can also go to control panel -> mouse -> Device settings tab
Here you will find an option called ?disable internal pointing device when external USB device is attached?.
Ensure the option is unchecked.

Dear reader,

Two days a go, out of the blue, my laptop doesn't give me any sounds over the speakers anymore. I've never had this problem and it is really a burden for me.
Actions I've taken so far:
- Check whether sound works with headphones - it does.
- Reinstall Realtek HD audio driver from realtek website - done, no changes
- Reinstall Audio Driver from Toshiba website - done, no changes
- Even updated the ATI HD sound driver - done, no changes

The model I'm using is the Satellite C855-255.7

The reason I'm not directly assuming my soundcard is broken/corrupted is the fact that through headphones, the audio works fine.

I would like to get suggestions for more actions to take, or a link/description of a fix for my problem.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Wouter Pol

Answer:Satellite C855-255 sound suddenly stopped working

It is really strange that for no apparent reason speakers stopped working. In my opinion it has nothing to do with sound card or preinstalled sound driver.

When you start some music on your PC and open sound properties > playback device what is the status of the speakers there? Be sure entry speakers is not disabled.

Hi.

I bought this laptop last month in November.
Anyways, around a week or two ago, the sound suddenly wouldn't work.

It started making weird noises when I put in headphones, and the speakers just made no noise at all ever.
I did lots of weird things -- such as system restore, re-installing sound drivers but nothing worked until I updated the bios then everything went fine and the sound worked again.

However, today, the sound just suddenly stopped working again. I tried to re-install the current bios but InsydeFlash says, "The version of the ROM file is the same version of the BIOS" and just closes.

I searched the internet for an older version of the bios but when I try to install it, InsydeFlash says, "The version of ROM file isn't newer than version of BIOS" and of course I know that but then it closes too!

I'm not really good at computers or anything so any help at all would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Answer:Satellite C650 - sound just suddenly stopped working

Hi

I recommend checking some options firstly;
- check if mute is not enabled
- check if all volume controls are set to higher value
- check if sound would appear using headphones

If this would not be successful, then you should reinstall the sound driver.
Firstly go to device manager and uninstall the sound driver. Reboot the unit
Then download the sound driver from Toshiba page and install it again. Reboot once again and test the sound.

Hi,

I own an A300 19T Toshiba, model PSAJ4E that I've been using for over 1 year and a half. Yesterday, I just booted it, started working for like 5 min and all of the sudden it ceased functionning and remained silent. I didn't go through the shutdown process or anything software based process, just a hard shutdown. I don't even have the power led indicator on anymore. I suspected the power brick being the issue, took it and plugged it into another laptop and was good (the power led came up). It's definitley about my laptop.

So I'm writing to ask you guys: What can cause the power indicator on my laptop not to switch on, when I plug the DC jack? Is it something related to the charge circuit in my laptop? Is it the motherboard which I have to change? How can I get a better diagnostic? I there any manual/process for troubleshooting my issue? My goal is to know exactly what went wrong.

By the way, I have the necessary skills to apply any basic manual procedures. I'm able to take my laptop apart (down to the motherboard) and reassemble it.

Thanks!

Ilyes Gouta.

Answer:Re: Satellite A300-19T suddenly stopped working (power led is off)

Hi,

it's look like the power supply electronic malfunction that is part of motherboard. I don't think, you can fix it yourself, in the most cases the whole motherboard should be replaced.

About two weeks ago I placed my laptop down on the ground. When I picked it up two minutes later, there was an error on the screen which read something like "There is a problem with the cooling system, please contact your nearest Toshiba centre." Since then, the cooling fan has not worked.

I replaced the fan with a different one which also didn't work, so perhaps the problem is the system not the fan? Is there some setting within the system that allows me to manually turn the fan on and off?

Answer:Re: Satellite L550 - Cooling fan suddenly stopped working

> I replaced the fan with a different one
So that means you replaced it with another model?
Well, I think another fan model will never work because notebooks are specific products designed for certain series/models only. So you can?t change everything as on desktop computers.

In my opinion you should contact nearest authorized service provider. The guys can replace the fan and order a new one. If your notebook is under warranty, the repair will be for free. :)

I have a Satellite C855-1J2 running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. I turned it on on the 21st December 2012 and installed five applications - the latest versions of Firefox, CeltX, Notepad++, Open Office and Microsoft Security Essentials (I removed McAfee). I also got all the latest Windows Updates. Since then I have not installed any other applications.

For three days afterwards, my laptop was running fine until, suddenly, the speakers stopped working. I can identify the exact incident which caused it. I had plugged in a pair of perfectly ordinary headphones using the standard headphone jack socket, powered the laptop down after I had finished listening but left the headphones plugged in.

When I turned the laptop back on the next day, no sound came from the headphones.
When I unplugged them, no sound came from the speakers.
I rebooted my machine and the speakers worked fine.

However, I am now in a position where every time I turn my laptop on, the speakers do not work and they will only function again when I next reboot. A little investigation of this problem shows the following...

Whenever I turn my laptop on and go to Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Manage Audio Devices I see two items:

Hi

The issue you have described above looks to me like the speakers would not be chosen as ?default? device but the Digital Audio (S/PDIF).
Somehow the sound driver cannot detect the speakers from the first system boot.

I have no idea why this happened but I?ve got two proposals:

*1)* Uninstall the sound driver from the system. Download the newest sound driver from Toshiba page and install it after the notebook has been rebooted first.

*2)* If sound driver installation does not help, last resort would be the system recovery.

Hi - the touch pad on my Satellite Pro L870-18G (Windows 8) has suddenly stopped working (after less than 2 months' use) - which makes the laptop rather difficult to use. According to the device manager there is nothing wrong with the driver - but I tried to reinstall anyway (didn't help).
Do these things normally suddenly fail?

Why does the device manager say there is no problem when there quite clearly is?

Maybe the touchpad is disabled. Is there any reaction when you use FN+F5 key combination?

Any ideas what this could be and how it might be sorted?

Thanks.

Hi - the touchpad has simply stopped working after the last couple of rounds of Windows updates and I didn't note which one, so not sure if I have a suitable restore point.

Tried downloading latest drivers from Toshiba website and it makes no difference. Also tried uninstalling these and installing the Elan drivers and these didn't install properly at all. I found some slightly older Synaptics drivers 17.0.10.1, which one of my other PCs runs ok on and although they installed ok, the touchpad does nothing. I'm relying on an external mouse, which is less than ideal.

Worryingly, the Toshiba website says it doesn't recognise my PC's serial number, yet it was bought in the UK through Asda online. All help and ideas welcome...

The touchpad has been disabled? why? I guess some Microsoft updates disabled the touchpad.

Is the touchpad listed in device manager properly or can you see a yellow exclamation mark?
What operating system you have?

And have you tested an external mouse? Does it work or shows the same strange behavior?

Theoretically in worst the touchpad could be malfunctioning and needs replacing? In such cases an ASP would help you.

Answer:Satellite M50-A - ELAN touchpad stopped working

Identical problem here. Satellite M50-A-11Q. Allowed windows update and touchpad and keyboard drivers are disabled.

Using an external mouse to access - currently doing a system restore to before the latest update. This looks like a fault at Microsoft's end.

Will update once I have a definite solution.

UPDATE: Restore has temporarily fixed the problem. Disabling windows update for the time being.

My touchapad worked fine on both system 's and dedicated driver (synaptics). One day I turned it off using Fn + F9 and after that I coudln't turn it on. I used system driver then. So I installed Synaptics but it said there's no conpatible device to work with. I tried Alps - no result too. So I checked bios - Pionting Dev. is on. I did changed this option two times thinking it may help - no. Today it's about half a year since I'm forced to use usb mouse.

Yesterday I restored the system - I had whole, independent image. It was created when touchpad still worked. After restore touchpad does not work. So I decided to install fresh system - same problem. I almost thought that touchpad is broken. However, today I noticed that when I disconnect USB mouse, then betwen this action and system's sound (informing about this action) touchapad works - during about 0,5 s. It moves! But I didn't managed to turn it on.

I can't understand what's the point. I read few post on other forums. It seems that some other people have same problem. They have different notebooks but still from Toshiba. I think we need professional help. Can we get it?

Sorry for my english.
Best regards,

Answer:Satellite A350 - Touchpad stopped working

Hello

To be honest I haven?t found other similar threads so it doesn?t seem to be a common issue. Also the touchpad on my both Toshiba notebooks works perfect and never had a problem. Furthermore here it?s only an user to user forum where you can talk with normal people like you and me. If you want professional help you must get in contact with an authorized service provider.

Anyway, one point is not clear for me: You wrote about several system restores, images, etc. but what images you have used exactly?

In your case I would recommend a recovery installation from Toshiba recovery disk. The disk can restore the original factory settings (out of box) with all necessary drivers and tools. After this installation everything should work properly again.
If not it?s a hardware malfunction?

Answer:Satellite C50-B-189 touchpad and buttons stopped working

Hi, this is due to the pad driver (which is bugged), just kill the process using CTRL+SHIFT+ESC AND THE TAB plus DOWN ARROW to navigate to the target process. I have to do this each starts.

From tomsguide (november 2014):

These fixes don't help, all that happens is, after some time, the touchpad fails again. While Toshiba works on this, I have figured out a quick, effective workaround. This is for my new Windows 8 Toshiba.
Press CTRL ALT SHIFT to get your processes to come up. Find the Touchpad "enhancer" process. End the process. Your touchpad will work fine until next restart at which point just repeat this step.
If you are struggling to end the process without being able to use your touchpad, I found a curious thing out. If you hold a mouse click down, you can move the mouse arrow with the touchpad just fine. Its a bit... inconvenient...but all you need to do this for is to end that process and after that you can use the touchpad normally.

Hey lads

I got this Satellite L850 toshiba latop (faptop) and i'm having some issues.

When i turn it on nothing is wrong.
When i hit the first screen after logging on (windows 8) with all the options of what to do (desktop, internet etc.) none of my USB ports work and my laptop mouse (touchpad) does not work aswell.

The only keys that work are the F-Keys (F1, F2, etc.) just wondering if anyone knows what's wrong with it.

I did see a message when i was turning it on right at the first 'loading screen' (black background red text 'TOSHIBA' or whatever it says) saying that it was going to scan C drive and repair it.
It finished and turned itself off.

Being a person i turned it back on and this is when the problem happened.
Before this problem came up I was on it playing counter strike and this happened 10 minutes after it.

If anyone can help i'll appreciate it. thanks.

Answer:Satellite L850 - USB and touchpad stopped working

I guess there is some kind of software problem because the system has started the automatic repair process. Obviously this repair process has affected the keyboard, USB and touchpad device.

I guess the System refresh, reset, or restore would resolve your issue and therefore I think you should start with the option ?Refresh your PC? without affecting your files.

This option should be chosen if your PC isn't performing as well as it once did, and you don't know why, you can refresh your PC without deleting any of your personal files or changing your settings.
To refresh your PC
1. Start charm bar (Win key +C) click Settings, and then Change PC settings.
2. click Update and recovery, and then click Recovery.
3. Under Refresh your PC without affecting your files, click Get started.
4. Follow the instructions on the screen.

If this would not help you, you could _Restore the PC to early point in time._
To restore your PC to an earlier point in time
1. Win key + X and then choose Control Panel .
2. Enter Recovery in the Control Panel search box, and then click Recovery.
3. Click Open System Restore, and then follow the instructions.

In worst case you would need to recovery the notebook back to factory settings using the Toshiba HDD recovery.

My Sat L300 suddenly stopped working the other day.

It kept freezing to start with, then nothing at all. So, I kill-disked the HDD and tried to re-install Windows (XP).
During the install it threw up a message that some internal components had been incorrectly installed and needed to be reinstalled.
I was told to remove the memory cards and re-seat them.

That did not work. I thought that perhaps the HDD was damaged, so I fitted a new one, and started to reinstall Windows.
Once again, same message. One of my colleagues at work suggested that the Motherboard was probably U/S.

So I have been trawling the .net to find a replacement. Laptop out of warranty! I am told that some other serial numbered motherboards will work with this laptop. Don't really want to get a motherboard only to find its never going to work! My unit has an SPS number of: V000138330.
I am being offered one with an SPS of: V000138390.

Any ideas? Will this one work?
And if it does, will it give me the functionality that I used to enjoy?!
Sorry for the long sob story.

Any advice gratefully accepted.

Hello,

I have a Toshiba Satellite L300 with a built in 2.0 USB camera and a windows 7 operating system, the camera suddenly stopped working since about 2-3 weeks ago with unknown reason!

I already tried system restore, un-installing and re-installing the camera driver, preformed a full scan by kaspersky internet antivirus 2012 (up to date), and I also ran a complete system and drivers troubleshooting ... and the problem still exists ...

When I use the windows live movie maker it gives me an error saying: can?t record audio or video from the selected device. Make sure that the device you're trying to use is installed properly and not currently in use by another program.

The microphone works well on skype but the camera doesn't open!
Please tell me how to fix it, what am I missing?

Answer:Satellite L300 - Built In webcam suddenly stopped working

Did you recover the unit using Recovery disk from Toshiba?
In such case the cam should work?

Otherwise I would say it?s hardware related issue.

Some users here in the forum reported an webcam issue and the reason for that was an lose connection between the cam module and motherboard.
The webcam is connected to an USB controller on the motherboard.
If the connection does not exist, the webcam would not appear in device manager? does it appear in your case? Check this?

Hi friends,

Is it a hardware problem?

I?m using win 7 64bit and I tried to install drivers but seems to be a hardware problem

Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite C640 internal speakers suddenly stopped working

Hi

I?m not sure if this is a hardware problem.
You may have to check some settings.

In control panel -> sound -> playback tab.
There you should see the speakers chosen as default device.
You can also click right on these speakers and you should see some options:
? speaker configuration
? test
? disable
? and so on?.

Test the speaker firstly. In my case some short bell sound appears. You can also mark the speaker and click on Properties button. There you will see a second window with some tabs. Check the second tab called LEVEL. There you can change the sound level.

What happen exactly when you try to reinstall sound driver? Do you get any errors?

My daughter switched on her A30 laptop last night and only 2 keys worked. Tried rebooting and getting into BIOS but couldnt. Tried getting it to boot into safe mode, only the up and down arrow working so could not select safe mode...doh. Am guessing this must be a harware problem.

Rebooted into Xp an opened up notepad....this time about 5 keys working. Reboot, 3 key etc etc.

How do I get to the ribbon cable to make sure it is seated properly. Is it common for a keyboard to fail in this way and is it easy to get a replacement?
At the mo, have all the small screws I can find out, removed battery, DVD rom and hard drive. Seems to be held towards the middle and rear. Dont want to force it and break something else!

TIA.

OK, so I had to laugh....flip the little cover on the top of the laptop and there are the 2 screws that hold the keyboard in place....lol

The ribbon cable was just about in its connector. Pushed it in and engaged the two locking tabs on the plastic retainer...job done!
Put it back together, fired up and Bingo! we have a keyboard again!

Oh well, may help someone else I guess.

Hello Toshiba People,

I have been using Satellite A665-14F PSAW3E over 2 years and I didn't really have any problem with my web camera till today. I suddenly realized (when I entered a website requiring webcam) that my webcam is not working. (It has been working perfectly). My laptop stopped seeing the built-in webcam.

First I checked the "device manager" to find and check the driver of it but I couldn't find the webcam. Actually I don't know under which category in the device manager I am supposed to see it. After that, I uninstalled the Toshiba Webcam Application from the "add/remove program" thing of Windows. I found the driver+application package of the webcam of my laptop from the European website of Toshiba and installed it. It asked me to reboot both after the uninstallation and installation. I did both times. It is still not fixed. Plus, now the blue light right next to the webcam (that is supposed to be turned on when the webcam is active) is constantly turned on, which is really annoying...

The only other detail that I can give you guys is that I realized that I have one "Unknown device" with a yellow triangle error icon on it under the category of "Universal Serial Bus controllers". Could it be related with my problem, like if the webcam is also USB related hardware? Cause I believe this unknown driver showed up in the same day with my webcam problem.

Answer:Satellite A665-14F - Built-in Webcam suddenly stopped working

>The only other detail that I can give you guys is that I realized that I have one "Unknown device" with a yellow triangle error icon on it under the category of "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

I assume this is the internal webcam.
The webcam module is connected to the USB controller on the motherboard and the yellow exclamation mark means that webcam software was not installed properly.

In your case I recommend firstly:
1) Uninstall the webcam software again
2) Delete the unknown device from Universal Serial Bus controllers in device manager (mark it and press del )
3) Install CCLeaner tool can clean the registry and system
4) Reboot the notebook and install the webcam software once again.

Remember this recent thread?

https://forum.toshiba.eu/showthread....topped-working

Well guess what my mouse and touchpad stopped working again today, this time during a Windows update (rather than after) - and guess what... the "Elan - Other Hardware - ELAN Input Device" was one of the updates, same as last time.

The good news, for me anyway is that the problem was temporary this time. After forcing a reboot by a long press of the power key, mouse and touchpad functionality was restored after the updates finished installing.

EDIT - just to say that my touchpad customisations e.g. reverse direction of scroll, 3 finger press to launch browser etc. have all been lost. No big deal, just a nuisance

Answer:Satellite M50A - ELAN touchpad stopped working - again!

And as a follow up, having edited the registry to restore the functionality to launch my favourite browser with a 3 finger press (see another thread for reason for why I had to use regedit) I've had intermittent results.

I've now realised that the 3 finger "press" feature seems to have disappeared to be replaced with a 3 finger "touch". It's not documented that I can see, the registry key names have remained the same but pressing doesn't do anything while a lingering 3 finger touch does work.

Anyway, you should try to boot in safe mode and then you are able to remove external keyboard driver from software list. After restarting in normal mode, the touchpad and keyboard should work properly again.

For no reason at all. (as far as i can recall). I was just doing random stuff on pc (like every other time), surfing the web, while I just recognized my scroll on touchpad isn't working. I tried rebooting pc, turning touchpad on and off, but didn't hepled.

I have Satellite R850 2R notebook with win7 on it.

Answer:Satellite R850 - scroll on touchpad stopped working

Try to check if Windows update has installed something today and roll back OS to earlier time (two days back if possible) using system restore tool.

I don?t know if this will help but you can try it. Several times I saw that synaptics driver update is offered by option windows updates.

Hi,

Only had my C850-1D2 a few months, and the touchpad has suddenly stopped working completely, so I can barely do anything on the laptop. Restarting was no help. Has anyone else had this problem, and how did they fix it?

Thanks

Answer:Satellite C850-1D2 Touchpad stopped working completely

Did you check if touchpad is disabled?
Pressing F5 (or Fn + F5) enables and disables the touchpad.

Thank you in advance for any assistance.

I have had my laptop for about a month by now and about a week in I plugged in an external USB mouse because I prefer it over the touchpad. One day I decide to unplug the external mouse and to use the touchpad for a little bit, but when I unplugged it and had the touchpad enabled, the touchpad did not work.

I tried to FN+F9 key combination numerous times but it doesn't work and I also have reinstalled the drivers for the touchpad numerous times and they have not worked either. I have also uninstalled the touchpad drivers and restarted the computer, letting the computer take care of reinstalling the drivers but the result was the same.

Does anyone have any other ideas or should I send my laptop in for a repair?

Hello,

The touchpad on my laptop stopped working suddenly. The two buttons below it work normally, though. When I wanted to open a link, I could always do it by gently hitting the touchpad once. Now it is unresponsive so I have to click on links with the left button. I tried to disable and enable synaptics (in Control Panel as well as by Fn F9) but to no avail. Any suggestions? I am afraid it's something that cannot be fixed because the laptop is already quite old (4 years) but I hope someone can prove me wrong.

Thanks.

Hi,

You should try to reinstall a touchpad driver, I think your model belongs to Usa region. So, check here:

Hi,

My touchpad has stopped working. The little mouse light in the top left hand corner is off. When I attach an external mouse the pointer reappears and all is fine, when I remove the mouse the pointer goes away again.

Pressing F5 does not appear to be doing anything.

It has happened a couple of times in the past but a reboot seems to fix it. However this time nothing has fixed it. I have even tried re-installing the TouchPad drivers from Toshiba's website.

Any advice would be gratefully. Thanks.

i have a toshiba satellite and on the back it says the model name is satellite l500-1dt.
i am new to this website and using forums, the message that comes up on my computer is

system warning
Warning:a problem with the cooling system has been detected. please turn off the computer immediately, and return it for service.

i am currently working in the alps and do not have an english speaking computer shop near by.
could any one help me and advise me what to do, i do not know much about taking a laptop apart to clean or change parts.

Answer:My Toshiba Satellite l500 cooling fan has stopped working

I would purchase a can of compressed air or use an air compressor (with a light gentle nozzle) and blow the dust out of the inside. If you have a failed cooling fan, then it will need to be repaired or replaced. That model I think is rather old, it may not be worth it to repair.

'turn off lights' and 'windows media player' media buttons do not work anymore...
They did a couple of days ago. Not sure why they have stopped working.

When I open media player manually, the *play/pause, stop, previous/next* buttons *do* work, just the *lights on/off* and *media player* buttons don't.
If anyone has had the same problem or knows how to fix it, would be very grateful if you could let me know...

Thank you !!!

I have Satellite L300 and Vista Home Premium installed.

When I try to open DVD player it says: "Toshiba DVD has stopped working. Trying to find solution for this program."

It was working before. I watched 3 movies on it and then it just stoped for no known reason.

Don't want to reinstall if not necessary.

Answer:Satellite L300 - Toshiba DVD player stopped working

Hi

> Don't want to reinstall if not necessary.
I?m not quite sure why the software stopped working but I think it?s advisable to reinstall it.
You should firstly remove the old software (Toshiba player).
Then you should download the newer DVD player version from the Toshiba European driver page and should reinstall it.

Check it out!

I have a Satellite L500D, model PSLT6A-015003 notebook, windows 7 (32 Bit) and the FN key(s) and the touch pad has stopped working.

I have downloaded from the Toshiba download page the touch pad and the FN key downloads, but nothing works.

Can someone please tell me how to get these working again, even if it is only the touch pad.

Answer:Satellite L500D PSLT6A - FN keys and touchpad stopped working

Flash cards are controlled by Flash cards utility and this utility is part of Toshiba Value Added package. If this package is installed on your machine remove it from the system, restart your notebook and install latest version from Toshiba download page.

Please test also follow option:
Open flash cards settings and enable option ?Allow the mouse to bring up the cards? and test if this works.

Please check touch pad properties. Check if touchpad is properly listed and enabled in device manager (Mice and other pointing devices).

Second thing that you should check is control panel > mouse > device settings (last tab). Be sure Synaptics touchpad is listed there and it is not disabled.
As last step be sure touchpad is not disabled with FN key combination (if possible).

Does anyone know why the touchpad has stopped working- it happened after a Windows Vista home edition upgrade.
External USB mouse is ok but touchpad doesn't respond.

Any help would be great. Thanks

Answer:Touchpad stopped working on Satellite A200 after Vista upgrade

Maybe the touchpad drivers don?t response and are muddled up.
Remove the touchpad driver from the system and reinstall it again.

The touchpad drivers are available on the Toshiba European driver page.

Reinstall it and test it again!!!

PS: You should firstly check if the touchpad is not disabled!!!

Hi everyone,

I just bought my Satellite A500-1GL notebook today. I started it up and played around a bit (nothing serious). The touchpad was working fine at this moment.

Then I discovered that hardware update tool and started the BIOS update which worked without any problem. After that I rebooted the notebook, went to BIOS, loaded the setup defaults and saved it.
After Windows 7 (x64) was booted the touchpad didnt work anymore...

I downloaded the driver from here and installed it again, still not working. Then I went to BIOS again, disabled the touchpad (I thought its a bug maybe...) and booted again. Still not working...

I enabled it again in BIOS, tried to push Function + F9 but it still didnt work... Finally I used the recovery and did a fresh Windows 7 install.
But unfortunately it still doesnt work.

Now I'm out of ideas, anyone can help?
Is there a chance to get the old BIOS version again to downgrade it?

Thanks in advance ;)

Answer:Touchpad stopped working after BIOS update on Satellite A500-1GL

Hi,

It sounds strange that after Bios update the touchpad doesn't work anymore.

> Is there a chance to get the old BIOS version again to downgrade it?

To be honest, i don't know where to get. Anyway, make a Google search. Maybe, other forum users can give you a link to download it.
The Bios downgrade is more risky procedure than upgrade. So, be careful the next time....
The advice for future; Don't touch the running system.

Good luck!

Hi,

I was using Toshiba Button Controls (play/pause, stop, back/forward buttons) with Winamp and was perfect (but the FN+f2,f5,f6,f7,f8 and f9 were not working but i didn't mind) on my Satelitte A200.

But two days ago i have updated the BIOS to the newest version and the FN command started to work but the play, stop and b/f buttons are not working anymore (tried with Media Player too).

I have reinstalled the control drivers and is the same thing.

Do you have any idea how could i solve this problem?

Thx

Answer:Satellite A200 - Toshiba Controll Buttons stopped working

Hello

Have you only reinstalled the Toshiba controls driver or controls software too?
I think you should try to reinstall both applications.

So remove both applications in Add or Remove programs. After this restart the notebook and use CCleaner to remove still existing files from these programs and restart the notebook again.
Then install the Controls driver first and then Controls software.
Usually the driver must always been installed first.

Check this!!

All my Toshiba utilities have stopped working.
Message pops up saying "*** have stopped working" windows is looking for a solution.

This was after updates were installed in the right order as posted earlier in forum. Not just the value added package but also configfree and PC diagnostic etc.

I have a Satellite P100 - 160 PSPAAE running Vista Home Premium.

Any ideas? I'm thinking it might be McAfee Security Center having something to do with it.

Answer:Satellite P100-160 PSPAAE Vista: All my Toshiba utilities have stopped working

Hi,

I suggest you the following: Recover your machine and update the tools and drivers again. I am not sure if McAfee is the cause for your problem but if a system is broken on the software side then one of the most popular and useful actions is to recover the system and then to be happy when it works again.

Would appreciate some feedback on your success.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L500 PSLS0A-019002 with Windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed that I received two months ago as a gift.

Apart from disliking some the quirky and useless (to me) Windows Vista / 7 features, as the desktop is loading I get the error message "Toshiba Service Station has stopped working" which proceeds to find a solution, but apparently never finds one because this condition repeats itself every time I boot.

On another thread in these Toshiba forums, someone suggested downloading the independent utility called Toshiba Service Station and reinstalling it. I do not see such utility listed on the downloads page for my Toshiba model. Since I don't even know what the Toshiba Service Station does (unless it goes by another name - Toshiba Bulletin Board perhaps?), I have no idea what is causing the error or how to correct it.

Does anyone have a more precise solution?

Answer:Toshiba Service Station has stopped working - Satellite L500 PSLS0A

Hi,

Service Station is not currently active in Australia, so you can simply uninstall it.
