Black screen, Caps Lock button blinking

Question: Black screen, Caps Lock button blinking

Lap top died overnight. Plugged it in the next morning and the light from the mouse and the power button all came on as they normally would but the screen remains black and the caps lock led light continuously blinks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Just registered so I could also say thanks to the member who came up with the cost-free solution to this problem.  Put a towel around the laptop until it overheated enough to turn itself off. Waited for it to cool. Started right up w/ no issues.Woo hoo! My wife asked me how I fixed it, after my computer guy said it couldn't be done in a cost effective way.  I told her I used a bit of witchcraft. lol

I put my computer to sleep last night and when I went to turn it on this morning it started to power but nothing happened.  The screen is black and the lights for caps and number lock are blinking.  They blink continuously with 4-seconds in between.  I've tried a hard restart, as well as removing the RAM and wireless card (per other posts for similar problems).  Does anyone have any idea what I should do next?  I'm a graduate student and hate to admit it but I can't be without a computer for very long :/

Hello, Thank you for posting in the HP Support Forum. I am afraid this issue cannot be resolved remotely and it is a bit difficult to understand and know in details what exactly you removed/replaced. Since it started to occur after this change obvious this is the cause. Please, review these artciles :>> http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c01732674>> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01732674and follow the appropriate instruction for your specific situation.  If they don't help, you can consult with HP Service center or bring the computer to HP authorized service center where the technicians will probably be able to help you solve the problem. If you cannot find a troubleshooting solution, contact HP Customer support for further assistance or to have the computer serviced. Hi, First, with reference to the Service Manual on the link below - remove and re-seat your memory module(s). If the above makes no difference try the following. Again, with reference to the Manual on the link below, remove one of your memory modules and then see if the notebook will boot.  If it doesn't, try the same module, but in the other slot.  If is still doesn't boot, try the other memory module in both slots, to see if any combination will allow the notebook to start normally. The procedure for removing these modules is detailed starting on Page 63 of your Maintenance & Service Guide. Regards, DP-K

My Compaq CQ62-209WM was working great until a couple of weks ago.  When I turned it on the screen stayed black, the caps lock light blinks once every 5 seconds, and the wifi light stays orange.  Read on this forum of others with similar problems.I tried a hard reset and it worked the first time, long enough for me to back up the important stuff on my hard drive, but did not work the second time (or any time I have tried it since then). One blink indicates CPU failure so I ordered a new CPU and thermal material, dismanteled the unit and replaced the CPU and thermal material this evening. Still have black screen and blinking lights - still one blink every 5 seconds. Tried hard reset, no change.Any suggestions? Not able to replace computer at this time - willing to try almost anything. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Compaq CQ62-209WM, black screen and caps lock blinking

Hi @micwtx ,  Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your Compaq Presario CQ62-209WM Notebook and issues with the flashing lights and not starting correctly. Here is a link to computer does not start. It has the LED blinking codes and suggests that it could be your System Board. Have you tried to reseat the memory and HDD? (it is in the document) Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues. Plug the power adapter directly into a functioning wall outlet. Do not plug it into a power strip, surge protector, or secondary power source as this could cause and issue.Hope this helps you. Thanks.

Does it have a legacy hard disk or an SSD disk? The blinking is a diagnostic code. Watch the blinks to determine where it repeats.  What is the complete product name or product number?  Look on the side of the  box it was delivered in.

This HP Laptop has not been booting properly. After some investigation, I came up across the LED blink/beep problem codes and was hoping to utilize that page. The problem is, on my laptop, the Caps Lock LED light constantly flashes and does not stop, unlike on the problem code page where it says it should stop to give me an idea of what the problem is. Additionally, the LED light on the Wireless key is a solid red color. After multiple attempts, I cannot find anything about an infinite caps lock blinking and a solid red light. I've attempted the hard reset, where I take out the battery and the AC Adapter and hold the power button down for an extended period of time. I've also reseated the RAM sticks. I've also even taken out the CMOS battery and replaced that.  If possible, could it just be a failure system board/motheboard? I've been told that if I take out the RAM and try powering on the device, the device should beep at me since it doesn't recognize any RAM, but in my case, it doesn't beep. Any other ideas?

My fiancée's HP G62 laptop suddenly stopped booting. More specifically, when you press the power button, the power light comes on, but the screen stays totally black. I tried doing a hard reset on it (unplug, remove the battery, and hold power button down for 60 seconds), but that didn't work.  I tried this multiple times with no success. I shined a flashlight on the screen to see if there was a faint image (indicating a backlight problem), but there is no image at all. I tried connecting the computer to an external monitor, and that didn't work either.   Recently I had to replace the fan and the power button assembly on this machine, but it was working fine after that until now.

Just disassembled my Z580 to check why it wasn't starting up (another thread) as I figured if I'm going to have to get a independent engineers report I might as well open it myself at the same time. Followed all the steps as outlined in the hardware maintenance manual and found no sign of any hardware damage/power surge/blowouts anywhere. I then reassembled the laptop using the same guide (with no extra screws) and placed the battery in (just to confirm I took out the motherboard battery once I could and reinserted it when I was closing up). Much to my confusion and relief that there is some sign of life, the power button, power light, battery light and caps lock light are flashing in that order. A couple of times when I press the power button the touch sensitive volume buttons also flashed, but that's only when I press the power button sometimes. I can't find any info on these lights online. Any quick help would be appreciated

Answer:Z580 power, battery, caps lock and power button blinking in order

Just a quick edit: By some miracle it has powered up and all seems well. Only oddity is that some icons in the bottom taskbar are invisible, but fan and everything else seems to be working fine with no issues in device manager.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ56-101SG which does not start anymore.I updated the BIOS from Version F.00 to F.18 which forces the device to reboot which went well. But after a shutdown the notebook does not start, it hangs with a blank screen, power LED and WiFi LED lit up and Caps Lock LED is blinking about 1x/sec. What I tried to recover:* Remove battery and AC adapter, press power button for about a minute and try to power up again with AC connect. --> Same bad state as before.* Press power button for 5 sec while no power connected (battery removed), reconnect AC, press [Win]+[B] while power button starts the system. --> Same bad state as before.* The same as before but this time with a 2GB USB thumb drive (FAT16 formatted, "HP_TOOLS" named, put "01604F06.BIN" - an older BIOS version binary - into root directory) connected to USB port. --> Same bad state as before. - Did I anything wrong when trying to recover the BIOS?- May the name of the BIOS file needs to be something else?- Is there anything else I can try to get the device up and running again? Kind regardsChristian

I have a windows 8 HP pavilion x360. I used it about 2 weeks ago after I downloaded a picture program from Canon and it was fine. Went to use it today and when I plugged it up and turned it on the screen is black, and the caps led is blinking every 4 seconds. This isn't my laptop so I'm freaking out a bit. I'm not sure what I did but I'm not sure how to fix it either. The fan comes on. I've tried a few things but nothing works. I hooked up an HDMI from it to the TV just to see if I could get something on the screen but nothing comes up. Anyone else have a solution? And is this common? For some time now, i have been experiencing that my Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock all lights up (not blinking) all at the same time, I tried to google it but i can not find any solutions or explanations for it.

Does anyone know if it is bad? and what is causing this?

I am having a wired keyboard with nothing fancy just a standard issue Logitech keyboard.

Answer:Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock all lights up (not blinking)

Can you toggle those functions off, one at a time? Sometimes restarting the computer will use the last state it was in, I'd fully shut down and pull the power cord from the computer and the keyboard cable then put them back and try again.

Hi,

I've just a simple questions (maybe): I recognized, that pressing the NUM LOCK key causes the LED of that key to flash on, ok thats`s normal, but also the CAPS Lock key LED turns on weak.

Now, when I'm pressing the CAPS Lock the LED gets brighter.
Switching off NUM Lock turns off the LED, thats ok, the CAPS LOCK is still burning bright (because it was pressed as well).
Pressing CAPS LOCK again turns the LED off.

Funny thing is: Pressing the CAPS Lock forces the LED of it and the LED of the NUM LOCK to turn on.....

Any ideas or hints?

Got a HP Probook 450 G0 here, which is powering up with no screen display. No BIOS, no nothing. It isn't the backlight. You can hear fans spinning up, the Caps Lock key starts flashing, but nothing else happens. I've removed RTC/BIOS battery, nothing. Removed and swapped RAM, nothing. Plugged into TV with HDMI, nothing.  I'm starting to suspect it's something more complex - a motherboard problem, a BIOS problem, or a CPU problem. I seem to remember older HPs having Caps Lock blink codes for reporting issues, but I can't see any info about that for the ProBooks. Any ideas?

I went to get my HP dv4 Pavilion laptop after work tonight to check email and i opened it up and moved around the mouse to wake it up...the lights on they keyboard all came on as if it were starting but the screen stayed black. I waited a few minutes because sometimes it's been known to take a few seconds to actually kick on...but nothing happened so I forced shutdown by holding the power button. Turned it back on and the screen came on(with a "your system didn't shut down properly error screen) but it still started, but now the Caps Lock and Scroll keys had blinking lights on the side and top, blinking together about every second. I tried tapping the buttons and nothing happened. What caused this and how can i get rid of the blinking. I've read from doing a google search that shutting down, taking the battery out and unplugging from the A/C adapter and holding the power button for 15 seconds takes care of the problem...but I would like to make sure that is safe before trying as this is a fairly new laptop(just got it at Christmas time). I'm running Windows 7 if that makes a difference. would also like to add that I just noticed that my little batter icon says it is plugged in but not charging....it's sitting at 80%....this is a brand new ac adapter that I just got last week...so I hope it's not that.Thank you for any help you can give me....and sorry if this isn't the right forum....it seemed to be the best fit.

Hello. I am trying to fix an HP G62-367DX Notebook PC.
Operating sys: Win 7, 64bit, AMD Turion(tm) 530II Dual-Core Processor, 4GB, 2.50GHz. I had this laptop since December of 2010 and on June of 2013 is when I used my notebook PC and was initially of no use. I have been working on my laptop on and off since. I am not afraid to open the sucker up and get this thing up and running.

The problem started out with what most ppl call it, the "blue screen of death". Like most ppl, I did ignore the blue screen and did a restart which brought me to the normal Windows screen and then it would start back up just fine. I found this in Device Manager's (Hidden Files):
Non-Plug and Play Drivers
-! ehdrv
-! epfwwfp
-! Security Processor Loader Driver
I am not sure if it has anything to do with what it was the blue screen situation, but I tried searching on the net on what it all meant and to see if I was able to fix it, but before I was able to do something about it, the blue screen kept popping up and it was getting worse.

The problem progressed to where on Windows startup it would just stop there, blue screen would pop up and of course I had to restart it and do an F8 key press for Safe Mode. I had to work on Safe Mode for a good couple of weeks before I can figure out the problem/s. I believe I had went into the system and found out it had something to do with some kind of error... *sigh* I did write it down, but that was like a month ago and I am unable to locate my ... Hello everyone.  I'm attempting to help diagnose my sister-n-laws HP 15 laptop.  I've searched high and low for an answer but all I'm finding is people with different types of "3 beeps".  They either have 3 "short" beeps or 1 short with 2 long or something like that.  I can't find ANYTHING with 3 long beeps.  It does 3 long beeps twice and then nothing.  I can hear the hard drive spinning too. No HP or BIOS documentation ever mentions anything about 3 long beeps either.  Does anyone have any idea what is going on with this thing?

Model CQ61 319WM This is a friend's computer.  Yes, it's old.  But, it was working fine until it went into sleep mode last night.  Hasn't come up since. Searches took me to this HP support page.  Win+B and Power on does not show the BIOS restore screen.  It just shows the same black screen.  It mentions trying more than once.  I tried at least a half dozen times.  Removed the battery and unplugged the power for a few seconds prior to some of the tries. The BIOS download (sp48895.exe) does not provide the option to format a USB drive as bootable.  I searched around and created my own bootable thumb drive.  Then, copied the BIOS files onto it. Unfortunately, that method also uses the Win+B and power on to bring up the boot order screen.  All I get is black. There are a bunch of "black screen" threads on here.  I've read several of them.  But, I haven't found any others that appear to apply to this model. Suggestions appreciated. Drake Christensen

After normal use and simply closing my laptop, it will not reboot.  I have had this happen before and was able to reboot by restarting. Following various forum instructions, I've removed the battery and attempted recovery from discs several times.  I've connected the unit to my smart tv, but cannot see my computer screen on the tv monitor.   What's happening now: When I turn on the laptop, the caps/num lock LEDs blink once.  There's power, but the fan seems quieter than usual.  It has been a little loud and running a little warmer recently.  The light at the power cord is white, and the light on the touch pad is on/white.  The wifi light and sound light are both red. Any advice?

Hi, I have HP Pro X2 410 G1 and when pushing the ON/OFF Button,it vibrates as it would be,and instead of turning on the display and displaying the HP logo and so on,it keeps the display black with no led (like it is when the tablet is turned off) and starts blinking white light on CAPS LOCK button,it blinks 1 time, after 3-4 second once more time, after 3-4 second once more time and continues doing so until I turn the tablet off. I turn it off by holding the ON/OFF button for several seconds, and it turns off as usually does when everything is ok (a light is blinking 1 time on the lower middle of the screen ribs and the power goes off) .So I think it actually turns on,but the screen is not showing anything and the system realizes that something is wrong and gives me alert with that blinking on CAPS LOCK button ... I have removed the touchscreen and using the tablet with its HP Pavillion x2 dock station as a notebook. The screen is moving, because the touchscreen must have been fastened to it, but I have removed the touchscreen and only the screen is left.there are times that it turns on normally, but for about 70-80% situations it gives the problem above PLEASE HELP ME TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM

I have an x61t that when it locks for screen saver password and you have to CTRL ALT Delete the relog back on. the CAPS lock on the onscreen keyboard indicates on but it's not. 1. Log into the tablet.2. The screensaver would lock the tablet.3. Press Ctrl Alt Delete to get to the logon screen.4. The on screen keyboard would show the Caps Lock key as on but it wasn't. If they pressed the Caps Lock key it would then be on.5. The users don't press the Caps Lock key now, even though it is being displayed as on, and they can logon OK. I cannot recreate this problem on another X61tablet and this behaviour happens even when the notebook is in a docking station with an external keyboard.  anybody seen this error before?

Hi there,

My partner Tracys HP DV6 laptop is refusing to boot. The machine appears to power up as normal, the power, volume and wifi lights above the keyboard light up as does the 'on' light at the front left corner and the fan can be heard running but the screen remains blank with no flickers of anything and no sign of even a cursor. The caps lock/num lock* lights repeatedly give two blinks in time with each other.

* I say num lock light. I think this is what it's normally referred to although num lock is not the nearest button. It's at the top right hand corner of the screen next to the 'End/page up' buttons.
After a bit of googling I have tried doing the hard reset (switch off, remove battery and power cable, leave for 30s then hold down power button for 1 min before rebooting). I also tried connecting an external monitor via the vga socket and to a TV set via the HDMI output. None of these approaches have yielded any results. My googling has also revealed the two blinks from caps lock/num lock are the code for a BIOS corruption fault.

I found instructions for restoring the BIOS here...

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833

I was going to follow the instructions there but wanted to check here first in case there was a more appropriate course of action I should take first.
Another thing is that there seems to be a lot of heat being blown out by the fan considering the machine appears not to be booting.

Hey all. Got windows 7 on my g555, with truecrypt on the drive, if it matters.  Last night, closed down the cover of my laptop before i fell asleep, like always, today it doesn't respond at all when I opened it back up.  Forced it to shut down, and haven't seen anything but a black screen since. The power light comes on, the fan comes on, and that's about it.  Can't get to the bios, can't do ANYTHING.  Tried unplugging it for a while, pressing power 10 times, holding power down for a minute, ran the battery entirely dry THEN discharged the caps, ...I've read many solutions where its the built up static charge that's the problem, but not here.  I've tried all versions of the solution I could find, all very similar, but none worked.  I took out my RAM and put it back in, and same for the hard drive.  No dice. The only lights I get at all are the power light, and the battery charging light next to it.  Can't get the CAPS LOCK, num lock, any of that to do anything.  Cannot boot by CD/DVD as I cannot change the bios, and can't get any response from any keys or key combos that I can think of (including the one-touch restore). Any advice?  What can I try here to get this sucker going again?

I have a HP 15-f162dx with an i3-4030u processor and a "born on" date of May 2015. About half the time on startup it gives me the blinking LED error light. I've read through the guide online but didn't see anything that matched exactly. The wifi button light is lit solid orange, the caps lock blinks steadily at roughly 4 second intervals without any variation in the pattern. If the power cord is plugged in the light there is solid. If the cord is not plugged in, then there isn't a light. I assume the power light and wifi light are irrelevant in this case, but figured I'd mention them anyway. I'm starting to think it's the motherboard, but not sure. Any ideas?

I've a customized Pavilion G6, and recently caps lock has started blinking, like, it blinks for 2 or 3 minutes, then it goes back to normal. I googled about it and found some guys had problems like their CPU being damaged, their BIOS being corrupted or something about memory buffers... Well, I'm able to use my laptop, no blank screen or whatsoever. So, my questions are, why do I get this blinking from caps lock? Should I be worried? And what can I do to make it back to normal?

Answer:Caps Lock keeps blinking...

Hello,

I see that you're having an issue with the caps light blinking 2 times. This means the memory is going bad. I would suggest reseating the memory. If reseating the memory does not resolve the problem, try replacing the memory with new memory.

If you do not feel comfortable reseating the memory yourself, take the computer to a computer retailer and ask them to reseat it for you.

Here is a document showing you how to reseat the memory.

Shown here this is the chart showing you the cause of the blinking.

You can also follow this document telling you what the cause for every possible issue you have with the caps lock blinking.

Trouble shoot attempted. 1. Unplugged all externals, removed Battery, unplugged power and held down start button for 1 min. No resolve. 2. removed HD and dim chips and re-seated then performed step 1. no resolve. 3. removed cmos battery for 10 min reinstalled and performed step 1. Still no resolve. Anyone have any other Ideas? Note; black screen so no access to any desktop ect. Also attempted attaching an external Monitor no signal noted.

So to add to the long list of problems I've had with my HP laptop (look at my profile for all the problems I've had in the past 1.5 years), my laptop will no longer power on. I had stopped using it for about a month, only to come back to find it will not turn on, and the caps lock button blinks in this pattern: +-+---+-+---... I have tried draining the battery, leaving it on the charger, and trying to reset it in any way I can. The battery is inside so it can't be disconnected.

hi everyone, I have a hp Pavilion dm4-3011Tx with beats which is about 7 months old. Yesterday I woke it up from sleep and the keyboard lit up and the caps lock light would blink twice every few seconds. I held the power button down and rebooted it and when it started up the fans were running and the light was still blinking. I tried a hard reset and everything and several hours later it started again randomly...A short while later it happened again and this time I was unable to fix the problem. I have already read that it a Bios corruption but I don't know what that means. Can anyone help? Thanks. I have already tried doing a hard reset, taking the battery and the plug out, pressing the windows key and b while turning it on. Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Answer:Caps Lock Light Blinking Twice

Your keyboard seems to be damaged. Get it replaced, you're still in warranty I guess.

Answer:CAPS LOCK button and NUM LOCK button LED's not working

I'm not sure if you've resolved this issue but I solved the problem by removing the charger plug, then the battery.  While the battery is out, push the power button.  Reinstall the battery and reconnect power.  When the notebook rebooted, the caps lock light and num lock lights were once again working.

I get the blinking caps lock/ scroll lights once a month or so. Restarting or doing a hard reset usually fixes the issue. But is there something I can do to resolve this? Apparently the 4 blinking sequence signals a graphics controller issue, but not sure what this means or how to fix.

Its only the caps lock led is blinking. I tried to charge it but seems quite normal. I notice also some sound inside seems like beeping thing. What would I do?

I'm having issues with what I think I've narrowed down to my motherboard.  The laptop turns on for about two seconds, then the fan cuts off and the caps lock blinks 3 lights before pausing and doing again in a continuous loop. I've searched and found the lights to be indicative of a memory issue, so I removed and replaced the memory with other memory, taken out the wifi adapter, cleaned the ram slot as well as the wifi adapter slot, and it continues to do this. I've seen reflowing the motherboard as something fixes some people's problems, but I really want to avoid doing that because I'm not comfortable with the idea itself. Is there anything I'm missing?

Answer:hp 2000 2C25DX caps lock blinking 3 times

No I think you have accurately diagnosed the problem. A reflow is not likely to help although there are shops that will repair a motherboard using advanced electronics and equipment to repair chips, not reflow. Reflow is very crude and ultimately ineffective. We can also likely find you a replacement board.
