Backlight won't turn on my laptop

Question: Backlight won't turn on my laptop

I spilled well-water on my laptop a few weeks ago and immediately removed the power adapter, battery and drained the energy from the motherboard. I then opened it up (as much as I could) to dry off what I was able to.

My laptop is an Asus U57A and I am not entirely sure how to open it up beyond accessing the basics (RAM, Hard Drive, etc.). Even when I think I've gotten every screw, the casing doesn't seem to want to come off and I haven't been able to find anything online about opening this machine.

The problem is that after one week of allowing the laptop to dry with good airflow (standing upside-down on a wooden desk with a fan blowing), I turned it on to see if it would work. It worked just fine for about ten minutes, and then the backlight started flickering like crazy and went out completely.

At the moment I am getting around the problem by connecting it to an old desktop screen I had lying around, but I originally purchased this laptop for use at school.

Any ideas on if I could fix this? It definitely doesn't have a warranty anymore so I wouldn't be able to send it in or anything like that.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Backlight won't turn on my laptop

Hi Aerebes, I really don't fix laptops; only upgrade the standard parts as needed. I did a search and this is what I found so far: http://screensurgeons.mybigcommerce.com/asus-u57a-laptop-led-screen/

Perhaps the video can move you in the right direction. I believe that they are also on YouTube.

Sometimes the backlight won't turn on in the laptop. I don't think it's a connection issue. Sometimes either the laptop's hardware or the video card is just not turning the backlight on. I can see that the display is on by the way... just so faint as to not be recognizable unless in the sun or a flash light is shined on the screen.

I've come to this conclusion because the only way to fix the issue when it happens is to plug an external monitor into the laptop, set it as the primary display, and then reboot. The laptop backlight then comes on and will work find if I disconnect the external monitor. The backlight only seems to go off sometime immediately after boot. That is WHILE the laptop is posting. It shows the American trends bios screen for about 1 second and then the backlight turns off.

I've called Asus about this a few times and they always start by talking about an "electrical reset" which apparently accomplished on this unit by leaving the battery out for 10 minutes and then booting the machine with ONLY the battery connected. This has frequently caused the backlight to stay on a half second longer but beyond that no result.

Anyone have an idea about this thing? It's very frustrating because it makes the laptop less mobile. It means that at any time on the road it could be almost entirely unusable... since the only way to fix it is to plug an external monitor into it.

Answer:Laptop backlight won't turn on sometimes (Asus F8SP)

they're pretty clueless...

Every time I talk to them they ask me my model number and serial number... then ask me to do things that aren't possible on this model laptop... I explain that... and then they say "oh, F8's must not have that feature"... Which begs the question of why I bother telling them the model if they're not going to give me model specific tech support?

The problem is weird... I think there's a circuit board that isn't part of the motherboard or video card that's screwed up. I don't mind the problem so long as there's a quick way to fix it on the go that doesn't require a spare monitor.

Hi, I recently updated my DELL L502X to Windows 10 from Windows 7. All drivers have been installed and Device Manager shows no problem. However I'm seeing a weird issue. I'm using an external monitor (ASUS) through HDMI. I'm setting the display to show on external monitor only. In Windows 7, everything works fine. After the Windows boot logo disappears, laptop screen turns off and external monitor turns on. In Windows 10, however, there is an issue. After boot logo disappears, external monitor turns on, and laptop screen turns off - but not completely. There is no content anymore but the back light is still on. If I switch the display mode to Duplicate or Extend (just to turn on the laptop screen) and switch back to Second Monitor Only, the laptop screen can turn off completely.

Has anyone seen a problem like this? Both monitors are shown as Generic PnP Monitors in Device Manager. I don't know if this is a driver problem or something related to my laptop. The bottom line is in Windows 7 there is no such a problem.

Any suggestion or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Laptop screen backlight doesn't turn off

This is most likely a bug in Windows 10, but it shouldn't cause any harm. Could be that Windows 10's external monitor feature probably has different settings than Windows 7, such as keeping some power in the other screen. Anyways why would you care? Just live your life with the plug in the wall and have fun with Windows 10!
Have fun!

When I turn the system off the backlight stays on and runs the battery down. It is not the keyboard backlight, it is the screen backlight. If I turn it off or put it to sleep the backlight stays on.
This did not happen prior to the upgrade to 10.

I want to turn off my display with keystrokes/buttons.  I press fn+f7 and it looks for the other monitor but switches back to the lcd.  I tried dimming it down but the screen is still visable.  Is there another key series that does something?  I know I can do a blank screen for my screen saver but I want something that I can enable/diable quickly.  Thanks.

I've owned my Y2P for the last 3 or 4 months now.  Keyboard backlight always turned off/on with Fn Spacebar just fine... until today.  Fn+Space just gets the keyboard backlight to flash off for a second, and then back on. Also I checked and all of the other Fn keys work.  Also the Caps Lock light doesn't come on either. And if that's not all, My power indicator light is amber even when fully charged.  (solid, not blinking)

Hi All, I have a HP ze4240 laptop and can't get the backlight to turn on. The screen is dark, but working. If I put a bright light behind the screen or hook it up to an external monitor you can see the display (windows etc.). I have tried this screen on two different motherboards (1 amd & 1 intel cpu), tried three inverters and two video cables. I checked the actual backlight with an external inverter (the one that came with my desktop ccfl's) and it works fine. If the inverter was smaller I would mount it in my laptop but it is too big to fit. Does any one know what turns the backlight on ? I think it must get a signal from the screen but I'm not sure. Thanks Bill0737

I have a new HP Envy 14 Ultrabook.  It has a backlit keyboard.  I know many people like that "feature", but I don't.  I assumed it would be easy to turn off the light in the control panel (e.g., in the device's settings), but there is no option.  I can hit the F5 key to turn off the general lighting, but then that F5 key glows blindingly bright all the time.  I want to either completely disable the keyboard backlights, or equivalently set the light level to be dim to the point of being completely off.  But I can't find any setting to do that in the power options, device properties, etc.  Nor has this question been satisfactorily answered in any other forums that I could find.  Thanks in advance for your help.

Is there a way to turn off the permanent light on  F5 Backlight Key For HP Spectre x360 P0A45AV 15"  convertible?Another thread mentioned that it was a BIOS update, but when I run my HP Assistant it shows that there are no updates available.  I have also checked for an available update by going directly to the HP support site and once again no BIOS updates seem to be available for this particular model.  I would really love to disable this light.  It seems to have been a design error to have the light enabled when the keyboard backlight is OFF.  It should have been designed to be enabled when the keyboard backlight is ON.Any info on if there is a solution for this would be much appreciated.Thanks!M.

Answer:Does anyone know how to turn on backlight of Satellite P500-14L

Hi

In Toshiba HW Setup you can find a tab called Illumination.
This feature allows you to set the conditions for Front Edge Logo LED, touchpad illumination LED and function button backlight LED!
But this feature is not available for all notebooks models!!!

Keyboard backlight is only available for models with the tiny keyboard sign!
Then you could enable and disable this pressing FN + (button with keyboard sign)

Hello outhere,

The backlight of my M-series M70-147 does not turn on anymore.
I first noticed this when awakening the laptop from standby or hibernation mode.

At first I thought the screen was not working anymore, but when I looked closely I could still make out the icons on the desktop vaguely. So at first I rebooted the laptop and then most of the times the backlight would turn on and stay on.

But now it does not do that anymore, not even when I close the screen (to force standby mode) and then open it again, the backlight won't turn on.

I also looked at other forums and topics what the cause might be, a broken backlight or a faulty power inverter.

So can anybody with the symptons described tell me what the cause might be?
I'm pretty sure nothing is wrong with the graphics card because when I hooked on my laptop to my dads LCD monitor it just displayed the desktop of my laptop on the LCD monitor. Also the first time I did this after pressing Fn-F5 a few times the screen of my laptop would come on some times. But now it does not do that anymore.

So can anybody with the symptons described tell me what the cause might be?

Many thanks.

Answer:Backlight does not turn on anymore Satellite M70-147

> So can anybody with the symptons described tell me what the cause might be?

For me it looks like a faulty FL inverter.
The FL inverter is a small part behind the display frame and it controls the backlight.

Usually the external display should work properly because the FL inverter affects the internal display only...
However, the issue can be solved only by replacement of this part.

I recommend contacting the Toshiba ASP in your country to get this part replaced

I know this has started to be covered already but the discussion was never finished. This was the original post: I have discovered that the keyboard backlighting won't turn off. The backlight on/off key is labeled as F5. I press it, but nothing happens. I've also tried pressing fn+f5, but that doesn't do anything either. I had been leaving the backlight on, but now I want it to only be on when I press the f5 key. Why won't the backlight turn off? I am having the exact same issue. I followed the instrustions of the helper, which were: Can you please get to the Desktop Screen of Windows by pressing the Windows Key and ?D? keys together and then press the F5 key? As you might know, F5 is used for refreshing a Window/Page. Do you see the Desktop Icons getting refreshed? This is to make sure that the F5 key is working or not?If you got confused with that suggestion, please open MS Word and then press the keys ?Fn? and ?F5? together and let me know whether you get the ?Find and replace? Window? I didn't understand the first part, but the second part I got. I opened Word and pressed Fn and F5 together and can confirm that the 'Find and Replace window appeared. However, I have no idea what to do from here or how to fix the problem, please help me. Also bear in mind please that I am 16 years old and know pretty much nothing about computers. Also, I only got this laptop for Christmas 2015 and am not very familiar with everything yet.

I've several IBM ThinkPad T21. In general, if you close the lid the backlight turns off. But I have two T21 where these feature does not work; the backlight reminds on. All my laptops have the same BIOS settings and the same Windows 2000 installation. To my amazement, if the lid is open and I press the thin button on the right upper corner of the keyboard (the button which is pressed if the lid is closed) the backlight turns off. But if I close the lid a little bit more and then press the thin button the backlight doesn't turn off. With other words: if the lid is open more than 90 degree (angle between keyboard and display) the backlight turns off and if the lid is open less than 90 degree the backlight doesn?t turn off if I press the thin button. To my big surprise the angle which changes the behavior of this thin button is exact 90 degree (on both laptops!!!). I have absolute no idea why these two T21 have this strange behavior while all my other T21 don't and why it depends on the angle of the lid.Any clue is very appreciated because these T21 are planned to be used with a closed lid and a turned off backlight.

Answer:IBM ThinkPad T21 backlight does not turn off if the lid gets closed

hey Seeky,i am uncertain on this, though it sounds more like an internal wiring that is for the backlight with the lid might not be proper.try using this manual - http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/guides-and-manuals/detail.page?DocID=UM006549and compare one T21 that works and one that doesn't.

As far as I know you can disable it using ?Toshiba HW set-up? utility.
On desktop click on ?Toshiba Assist? (I hope you have it preinstalled on your notebook) > Optimize > Toshiba HW setup > check if tab ?illumination? is available.

If yes use option OFF and confirm with apply.
This should help you.

You can also check advanced BIOS settings. If I am remembering well this illumination option can be also disabled there.

And yours should be in the BIOS setup where you can turn on the numlock by default. You will have to look through all the BIOS options to see if you have that option listed in there. But if you looked through the complete BIOS settings and find none then it most likely means there isn't a option to set it by default.

I purchased a new U310 near the end of August this year, using it primarily to bring with me to school.  However, I've been having a problem with the LCD screen backlight.  Typically, when the computer starts up, the backlight will be working fine.  However, once the computer goes into powersave mode and shuts the display off, often the backlight to the display will not turn on again regardless of if I press keys or the touchpad.  These are some things I've noticed: The display IS still on.  I can still very faintly make out the desktop and use the system, but the backlight is off completelyThis issue does not happen all of the time, but is still quite frequentSometimes putting the computer to sleep and then waking it solves the problem, but not all of the timeSometimes the backlight remains off even after a forced power off (holding down the power button), but typically a restart solves the problem and enables the backlight againAdjusting screen brightness has no effectThis happens regardless of the battery level and whether or not the system is plugged inAlthough this issue has seemed more prevalent recently, it even happened on the day I bought the laptop, but I just wasn't yet aware it was a reoccurring issueI've been able to recreate this issue, in fact I was just able to make it happen twice in a row.  First time the display went off and didn't turn back on, I restarted.  This even repeated the next time the display went into... Answer:Lenovo U310 LCD Screen Backlight Won't Turn On.

Just went to use the system and it did it again, pointing out something I forgot to mention. After the display shuts off for powersave mode, and I go to turn it back on again (by pressing a key or the touchpad) the backlight typically turns on for about one second (I can see my desktop with the correct brightness) then shuts off completely (very barely visible desktop).

hi,

I just try to find out how to turn off the displays backlight on my new Z30t.
While processes still are running, just to save power.

Here I have FN keys for putting light up or down, but they do not go down to zero, and there is no key to stop.
I had 6 laptops so far, and all had a FN key to switch off the display for power saving.
So I am somehow scratching my head, how to do here.

Also, I'd like to reprogram some FN keys as I do not need FN sleep and hibernate.
Couldn't find info on that, too.

Some idea? Please help!

thanks, Tommy

Answer:Portege Z30t - how to turn off displays backlight?

You can use the FN keys in order increase and decrease the display backlight but you cannot shut off the display completely using these function keys.

If you want to disable the display after certain time, I would recommend you to change the settings in the Windows power options.

Go to Control Panel ->Power Options
Here select a power plan page, on the left, click Choose when to turn off the display.
On the Change settings for the plan page, choose the display settings that you want to use for this power plan when your laptop is running on battery and when it's plugged in.

My T450 always turns on keyboard backlight when I power-on the machine or even just wake it up from sleeping. I don't look at the keyboard at all, so I don't need this backlight; but worse, it just uselessly consumes some power from battery (I do work without AC quite often), and I might miss the fact that the backlight is on for hours of working on battery, that's pretty annoying. Is that intended behavior? Can this "feature" be turned off? I don't see any option in BIOS for that. Thanks

I have an "issue" with my Yoga.It used to be that when I turned down brightness completely the screen would go black because there was no more backlight at all. However it now seems that even completely turned down there is still some backlight left meaning i can't turn off the screen completely. I really like being able to turn off the screen quickly, for example to save battery when rendering or when I leave the laptop unatended and don't want people to see what im working on. Is there any way to get the old behaviour back? Not quite sure what caused the change in but im guessing some kind of driver update... Running Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit

Answer:Thinkpad Yoga Brightness turn off backlight

Usually Intel graphics drivers don't have "backlight off" as the lowest setting, so in principle, this was a 'bug' that was 'fixed'.You could roll back your graphics driver and see if it brings back this functionality. I'd just pin something like LCDoff to the taskbar though.

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I would like to inform you that as of now, there is no such settings available to turn off the backlit keyboard after a certain period of inactivity. The backlight automatically turns completely off only when the screen goes off or when the machine goes to sleep. I personally think that what you have suggested would be an incredibly useful one and our engineers will take it as a great suggestion to implement the same.

Best regards,
Mithun.

First time poster here, I recently purchased a yoga 2 pro approximately one week ago in Hong Kong from a technology reseller (Fortress). Was super excited, majority of reviews were glowing etc. However, after taking home and using it for less than an hour, the whole computer just suddenly turned off. All i had done was install AVG anti-virus, real player, and Hearthstone (blizzard game, didnt play it yet). When i tried to turn it on again the power button and backlight keyboard would flicker every 5 seconds, but no screen came on. I tried with/without being plugged in to no avail. I wrote this off as bad luck and swapped it the next day for a new one. New one worked great for about 4 days, when the screen suddenly went haywire going all fuzzy with heaps of static (like one of those really old TVs when u get bad antenna reception). It was not responding to any keyboard or touchscreen commands, so I hard reset it (held power button for about 10 seconds). When i attempted to turn it back on again, same thing happend as the first laptop, flickering every 5 seconds, no screen. I will add that for these 4 days it worked I had mainly used it to watch youtube, play hearthstone, and watch movies. No other issues came up before the sudden breakdown. However I also noticed that when I played Hearthstone (a very low graphic intensity game btw) the laptop base got very very hot. I had also set my energy manager settings to high performance mode (part of the 'fix' for the off yel... Read more

Is it possible to turn off the display or the backlight of the A100? There are 8 steps of Backlighting but none to turn it off. My previous notebook had that feature, and I used it quite often.

Answer:How to turn off display/backlight on Satellite A100 (PSAACE)?

I assume you speak about the display brightness function which could be set with the key combination FN+F6 and FN+F7.
No, it?s not possible to turn off the backlight completely.
Something like that is not possible.

Of course you can set the time to the ?monitor power off? option in the Toshiba power saver.
If you are away from you notebook and don?t work on the notebook the display will automatically turn off after several time.

Hi Is there a way to do this at Windows 7 / 8??? I know that it's not possible from the BIOS but there must be an utility there which turns on the keyboard backlight at every windows startup and keep it on regardless of what. Also I would like it to be turned back on when the computer comes out of sleep/hibernation. Does anyone know a software for this? Thanks

Answer:T440p turn on keyboard backlight at startup automatically

I've seen this asked here several times, and the answer, as I recall from Lenovo staff, is "no".  It's a physical switch toggle with the Fn key and there isn't any software to substitute for that.

Hello, As the Title suggests, I am not able to turn on my Lenovo Yoga 2 13.When I try to turn on the Laptop, the White Light on the power button comes up for 6 Seconds and then goes off. Keyboard lights do not turn on, & the same effect with pressing the Novo recovery key.The battery does charge (The lights change according to the charge levels.) Things that I have tried so far: 1) Remove the power cable and press the power button for 30 Seconds, 60 Seconds, & 90 Seconds. No Effect. 2) Open up the backside, remove the battery cable (and battery), remove the power cable, and power discharge by pressing the power button. Turn on the laptop using just the Power cable. No Effect. 3) Remove the heatsink, clean it and then reapply the Thermal paste. No Effect. 4) Remove the hard disk and then try turning on. No Effect.  Despite trying all these steps, the effect is still the same. I honestly do not ahve any idea what to do now. Can anyone suggest something?  Any help would be appreciated!Thank You!

Question: Laptop backlight

Hi there,

currently having propblems with my laptop screen as the backlight seems to randomly cut out. It's an acer aspire 5535 and under 2 years old. After having a look at the connections there doesn't seem to be any loose or broken connections and can't find any reason as to why it does turn off. If I leave it alone it does come on but after starting any tasks or watching a video it will turn off, sometimes for minutes and sometimes for longer. A movement of the screen did used to get it back on but has stopped having the desired effect for a while now. Are there any obvious causes for something like this or will it be something more difficult?

Thanks

Answer:Laptop backlight

Its possible you have a bad cable that connects mother board to the screen but take a good look at the
solder joints around the sockets at motherboard end and inverter end. Also inspect the solder joints
on the inverter.

I've had this laptop for several years, and being horrible with electronics, it's gone through some tought times. There aren't any internal complications or anything to that extent, but the screen's almost completely off or it. I'm much more careful with my new laptop, thankfully, but I'm still curious as to whether or not my old, beat-up laptop can be saved. I want to use it for iTunes, but find it hard to see. Any suggestions as to what I can do, preferably without spending too much money?

Answer:Backlight on a Laptop is out

You can plug an external Monitor to it

Or you can replace the Inverter board that powers this backlight
The tiny inverter board, usually sits to the side of the LCD screen (note: this is under the display bezel, ie dismantling required here)

Hello, recently(a week or two ago) a friend of mines laptop, a Gateway MT6728, had juice spilled on it. While there wasn't a problem immediately a week later the backlight didn't come on, but you can still see the image if you hold a flashlight up to it. I took it apart to clean it and see if the video cable had become loose or something, and at first it looked like two of the video pins were missing. But then I accidentally had a magnet too close to the laptop and the screen flickered on for a second since it has a magnetic lid switch, or at least that's the only conclusion I can come to. Is there any way I can test the video cable to see if it's bad or not? Or any other way to test why the backlight isn't turning on?

Thanks

Answer:Laptop LCD backlight

Ok, well I got my multimeter and carefully tested the plug that goes into the backlight inverter board, 2 of the 5 wires have power going through them. I also tested the two wires that go to the backlight and there was nothing there so I guess that means either the port on the motherboard is bad or the inverter is...

Question: Laptop backlight?

A friend brought me there Toshiba satellite a15-S127. She said the monitor started flickering and the next time she started the system the monitor was blank. I started it up and it does boot into Windows. The screen is essentially black, but I can see the desktop faintly. When I pushed the ctrl-esc keys I could see the shutdown dialog pop up.

So I used the function F7 key to see if maybe that got messed with and the brightness had been turned all the way down. That didn't work.

I'm wondering if it is a backlight gone bad or if there is another software setting that can be adjusted?

TIA

Here's the problem I'm having with my laptop. I turn it on and you see it initially come on with all the text: i.e. Dell logo, drives connected, ram, etc. It then goes blank. I thought something was wrong with the motherboard, but if you wait a bit you can hear Windows start up. If you look closely at the screen you can still see everything: desktop, shortcuts, taskbar, everything. It is almost as if there is no backlight.

Like every laptop there is a small button of some sort near the hinge of the screen that when pressed turns the screen off for when you close the lid. If I push this down for a second and then release, the screen shows up again like normal, but then it will immediately turn back off (backlight off ,but can still see everything if looking closely).

I can plug up a secondary monitor and this works fine. When I plug up the monitor I have to hit the 'Fn' key and the 'crt/lcd' button to get it to link. Curiously, the laptop screen flickers on for a second, but then goes black again.

Anyone with an idea of what is going on? Is it just the switch near the hinge that is the problem? I was thinking maybe it was the switch or spring in the switch getting old and always being in the state of pressed down. Pushing the button and releasing only temporarily springs it up for the screen to come on, but drops back down. I was thinking if it were just this switch, maybe I could just remove it and then screen would work again.

Afternoon people,

Got a bit of a problem with a DELL Inspiron 6400 laptop (about 4 years old now). The backlight doesn't seem to be working and hence I've got to shine a torch on the screen to be able to see what I'm doing, but if you close the lid and open it again the backlight comes on for about 1 second then goes off again. When it does this I hear a spark like sound, initially I thought it'd be the inverter but upon closer inspection it could be the wiring from the inverter.

An orange flash is emitted from this end of the screen when it attempts to switch the backlight on...

I think I'm going to need a whole new screen (I hope not), the part in the picture is the bottom right hand corner.

Answer:Laptop backlight/inverter?

In most cases, the backlight power supply (inverter) can be replaced separately from the display screen itself.
I would consult a professional Laptop Repair Service.

Right, so this isnt my laptop, its my step dads and hes not here with it right now so I cant check it to find the exact model, but its a compaq. Recently the lcd backlight went funny and wouldnt come on, occasionally people with the magic finger have been able to push the button that the screen pushes down when shut to turn the light off and it will come on and stay on till you close it or hit the button but generally when you press the button it will come on for a few seconds and turn back off, this led me to beleive that its simply a problem with the button that could be easily fixed. He took it to circuit city tonight (which is why its not here) and they told him its the LCD and would cost 400-600 dollars to replace, I dont see how its the LCD itself when the light comes on after pressing the button down sometimes and you can actually tell the lcd is displaying the stuff because if you look carefully you can see the screen its just not lit up. Can anyone tell me if we should just take circuit cities word or seek another opinion?

Hi guys, Tom from England here.

Just thought i would sign up and see if any of you computer literate people could help me fix, or give any guidance on the problem i have encounted.

The problem is this, i can see the picture very very dull on the laptop screen. It just went dull once while i was using my machine and i restarted it and it came on fine, it then went on to do the same at a later date and when restarted it does not come on. It appears to either have a broken backlight, or a sleep related error/problem.

Following this I decided to plug it into mydesktop monitor where it seemed to be okay, during the startup and windows load screen, then when the log in menu should appear it went blank, however making the familiar windos start up noise. I tested it on my tele as i know that the television worked before when using it as the laptop monitor however the same error occured. Which leads me to believe its a sleep button issue. To test this theory i plugged in my brothers laptop into the TV and pressed the sleep button that would be pressed when the screen is closed and it not only dimmed the laptop screen but also the TV.

I located the sleep button under the laptop screen bevel and found it to be slightly damaged, so i changed the power options in the control panel to disable sleeping when the lid is closed but to no prevail.

Answer:HELP! My U41-70 laptop have no backlight keyboard!!!!

hi waichihang,

Your problem might be similar to this thread.

You can easily spot a keyboard with a backiit feature if there's a "crown" like logo on the space bar and if the keyboard lights up on boot-up. You can also manually toggle the keyboard backlights by pressing Fn+Space.

If you don't see this "crown" like logo on the space bar and neither the keyboard lights up on boot-up then the model that you received doesn't have a backlight keyboard.

In addition, for the backlit to work, the following must be met:
1. Compatible backlit-type keyboard must be used.

2. The motherboard must have a keyboard power connector to power up the backlight.
    - Link to picture
    - Link to picture

If one of the above is missing / not present, the backlit feature will not work.

Let me know how it looks like on your machine..

I was pretty sure its the backlight power inverter but when I turn on the laptop the little LED on the power inverter comes on. Does that mean that it's functioning properly? Also, before it pooped out on me, sometimes when opening the laptop I would have to press the button that senses if its open or closed several times to get the backlight to come on. Any ideas on what the problem is or how I could further diagnose the problem? Someone please help as I am a very poor college student with no money to take it into the shop.

I sat my friends laptop down and when I did I think I hit a key or series of keys because all of a sudden my screen went really dark. I tried hitting the little sun keys to make the screen brighter but to no avail. I took out the battery, rebooted and still have a dark screen. Help! He will be so pissed if I screwed something up!

I have a Toshiba Satellite A25-S207 When I turn the laptop on I can see a dim screen. but only if I shine a flashlight at the black screen. I was informed it could be my LCD inverter. I replaced the LCD inverter and the screen is still black. I can remote into the laptop from my desktop and see everything else is working fine. Does anyone have any ideal, what I can do to fix? Do I have to replace the LCD screen?
All advice is appreciated
Thank you

Peering at the screen, you can tell it's displaying. Sadly, it's only bright enough to see for a brief moment.

I'm running into the D-Sub on the TV and have the CRT/LCD setting to display on both the laptop monitor and the TV. TV is a clear picture and the laptop I'm guessing from reading I've been doing is lacking the backlight.

History: No updates have been done in the timeframe that the monitor issues surfaced. No drivers changed, no programs installed (except vaguely possibly ExamDiff and one or two portable apps (http://portableapps.com/).

A week or two ago, I noticed the screen seemed to be shadowed in one area but the shadow seemed to go away if you brightened the screen all the way. Also, the screen seemed to be flickering, like lightbulbs sometimes do before blowing, that really quick, irritating flickering. This didn't usually last long, maybe 30 seconds at the most and it would settle down, ditto the shadowing.

Now, if I switch between CRT/LCD options or press then release the little screen switch near the hinge (the one that turns off the monitor if you close the lid), I tend to get a very quick proper display on the laptop monitor before it goes dark again with the displayed information impossible to read.

The issue is the same through a hibernate and resume, brief flashes of a clear screen and then only the vague outline can be seen.

Answer:Laptop Screen Backlight(?) Issue

There are 100s of tutorials out there. It is more scary (if you've never done it before) than hard. https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=replacing+ccfl+backlight

I generally recommend replacing both the inverter and CCFL while you have it torn apart.

So I am getting this Lenovo T-61 series laptop and the backlight on the lcd is dead, and there's no way I am buying a new LCD so I took a cord from a monitor to my desktop and hooked it up and it works great so everything works. I hooked up a wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse so it's basically another desktop. My question is that I have a 220 Gig internal hard drive and I thought about installing it because atm it only has a 60G hard drive. So anybody know how I would go about doing that? And my last question is when I restore it if I should install Windows 7 or XP? It has 2 G intel core duo processor and 2 gigs of ram. And should I totally just take the lcd off? And if I should do that is it easy or hard and how would I go about doing it.

Sorry that this has been a run off bundle of questions, if you could help just answer whatever you can. Thanks .

Answer:Some Advice A Laptop With A Dead LCD Backlight

If the 220Gb drive you have is 2.5" not 3.5" then all you need to do is undo a panel on the bottom of the laptop and swap the drives over.

If you've got copies of both XP and 7, I'd actually use XP simply because there's probably more driver support for that OS on such an old machine.

If you want you can take the LCD screen off, yes. You'll probably need to remove the laptop keyboard and front bezel/panel to get to the screws that hold the screen on.

Hey guys, just a quick question.Last Saturday I used my laptop and everything was fine. I packed my laptop into its bag and took a train journey home. When I got home the screen all of a sudden went off. Now Ive tried fiddling with the screen inverter and yesterday the backlight lit up for a good few hours. Thinking it must have been a loose connection I put the laptop back together again. However, its gone back off again. Its an acer aspire 5735 that i've had just short of 2 years. Pressing fn + f6 to toggle the backlight on and off the backlight will light up for a split second, sometimes maybe a few seconds before it goes back off. I do recall hearing a slight humming noise when the screen was on say 50% brightness but paid no attention to it. Do you guys think its the inverter at fault or the backlight, possibly even motherboard?? Ive really not got any tools (volt metre) so its very difficult for me to isolate. Dont really wanna get an inverter to find out its not that!!Any ideas from anyone? What do you guys suggest?Cheers people,Andy

Whenever  I start my laptop the screen lights up and the machine eventually starts as I can hear the windows starting tone.I can even shut down the laptop with the keyboard. But all the while the display is blank. I have tried removing the battery and holding down my power button for 30secs to 2 mins. These remedies sometime work, some times dont. If I leave my laptop off for a day or two it works normal again, for a while. My previous lcd and something called a Lvds cable has been replaced at the service centre couple of months back as they started to cause problems(my screen started flickering and freezing). It worked fine untill now. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Answer:G500 laptop's LCD no display but backlight's on

Hi bharthi ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Would there be any display if you connect it to any external monitor ?
How was it if you turn on the pc using the Novo button (next to the power item 6 page 2) to access the BIOS set up .

If you have the skill and tools to reseat and check the LCD cable (page 61) see if that would help .

Update us how things go.

Answer:Backlight keyboard for G580 laptop

Hi raviameer,I believe not. But here are the two ideas for you to consider. Buy external keyboard and plug it into your laptop. And the second thing is keyboard light. Check it out: http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-Keyboard-Light-1PCS-Hot-LED-Pocket-Lamp-For-PC-Notebook-Laptop-Tablets-B...

I have the lenovo IdeaPad Z575 (12992PU):AMD A6-3420MAMD Raedon HD 6520G IGPUAMD Raedon HD 6650M 1GB6GB DDR3 Memory500GB 5400rpm HDDWindows 7 Premium 64-Bit Problem:This happens sometimes, but after I put the laptop to sleep several times during the same day, sometimes the display's backlighting will not turn on when I wake the laptop from sleep. I know only the backlight is off because I can see everything I left on the screen before I put it to sleep with very bright light source (flashlight or desk lamp). What I Have Tried:I have tried turning up the brightness (does not work).I have tried pressing FN+F2 (which is the turn off backlight key) (does not work).I have tried restarting the computer (this works, but I hope that this is no the only solution). Note, this laptop is only 1-2 weeks old. Hello everyone,

My laptop display is always black, but I can see the backlight is on.

My laptop is connected to an external monitor and when I click on Screen Resolution, I see that my monitor's name and my laptop monitor's name, but it's name is now different.

My laptop Display was always called "Vaio". It had max resolution of 1600 x 900.

Now, my Display is called "Digital Flat Panel (1024x768 60hz)" that is totally different than my display...any help?

Answer:Laptop Display black, but I see backlight

Update the Display adapter driver in Device Manager.

First run all Important and Optional Updates to completion to see if its offered, or another performance update is needed.

Rightclick on the monitor display to see how it is configured, try another. What happens when you choose only the laptop display, or unplug the monitor?

If these fail can you System Restore to before the problem began?

If not then we?ll try to think of other solutions before looking at the screen wiring harness connection.

i have an Acer extensa 2510 serial is NXEEXEA00141910DE93400 SNID: 41906909734. I have checked both these numbers and I keep getting a error on Acers warranty check saying it can't find it in the database, but that's not my problem.
when I try to switch it on, the laptop screen is blank and the backlight flashes on and of repeatedly in less than 1 sec intervals (like a car's indicators). I have tried a hard reset, without battery start, reseating the ram and any other component and cable on the laptop (so yes I have striped it, I work in a pc shop we do repairs) but nothing worked.
so I switched it on and listened to the HDD to hear if its reading or just spinning and I noticed that it sounded like it was in synch with the screen. my thoughts on this is that the motherboard it busted.

Hello everybody. I'm hoping to get suggestions on what may be causing this issue. When I turn on the laptop, the screen works but there is no backlight. Then I connect a monitor, and that turns the backlight on. Then I can disconnect monitor, and use laptop normally until I turn it off. Once it (backlight) came on by itself, once it came on after coming out of standby, and once it came on as if nothing was wrong straight away. Any ideas? Any suggestions greatly appreciated. This laptop has been an absolute legend, i've had it for a few years and I'm extremely impressed with its resistance. It has been dropped while on from table height at least 3 times without any damage. It has survived a burst pipe leaking onto the keyboard for hours and then being turned on while wet - producing a nice electric burn smell. But I just dried it out and then it was good to go again. The touchpad left and right click buttons are long gone but that doesn't bother me too much. It's shabby but it works and I love it, it's like Jason Vorhees.

Hello all.  Can anyone please help me?I am having display issues.  I have an HP Stream 11-d006TU, used by my wife. She was in the middle of working on a MS PowerPoint presentation, when the LCD Display went black.   When I hook external display via HDMI to our Sony Bravia TV, it works fine.  I immediately rushed to an open Computer repair shop at a nearby mall, asked a couple of repair guys but they had different opinions:First guy said it is a video card issue.  He tried turning the laptop power button off then back on (which I already did), and just flipped the laptop to check the bottom.Second guy detected that the external display is working, and advised to have the LCD replaced (which costs PhP 3,500 - PhP 4,500 or approximately US$70 - US$90).  I didn't pursue with his repair yet, as I was hesitant that he may just be trying to make a quick buck from me.Can somebody please help?   Can I still try some things before concluding that it's indeed an LCD replacement?  Thanks in advance for any help.
