Preferred Solution: windows xp pro all files on all drives show as read only

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: windows xp pro all files on all drives show as read only

Assuming you mean folders, you cannot change attributes from read only using Properties. They have a more comprehensive explaination and workaround here. Be sure to read the warning, though.

Virtually every file shows read only when I right click on it and choose properties. In uncheck read only, then click apply and choose applies to all subfolders and files. Windows appears to change the properties (a window opens up and a green progress bar fills). But if I click OK and close properties, when I look at properties again, they are shown as read only again.

This happens both when I am logged in under my user name, as well as if I log in as administrator.

What's the deal? Am I doing something wrong. The only difficulty it's created so far was when attempting ti embed a cover art JPG into an MP3 file in my music library.

Answer:All files show Read Only in Properties- I cannot change

Hello patagriff,

Are you sure that it's read only.

If it's got a dot or blank in the Read-only box, then it's not set to be read only.

Only when it's checked is it read only.

Keep clicking on the Read-only box to see the different options.

Hope tis helps,
Shawn

Windows 7 Beta

Today I discovered that I cannot click on the "Show Hidden Files, Folders and Drives" radio button and make it stay clicked. I needed to access the hidden "temp" folder under my account folder and when I tried to make the hidden files visible I noticed this issue. When I click on the "show hidden.." radio button and click Apply it appears to stay clicked. I still cannot see the hidden files and when I refresh the selection window the radio button is shown as unclicked again.

Besides that, Windows 7 is working perfectly. No complains.

Answer:Show Hidden files, folders and drives does not work

Go to the Start button and type in "Windows Explorer" (without the quotes)
At the top of the search box will be a link for Windows Explorer - right click on it and select "Run as Administrator"
Then try to Show Hidden Files.

The problem just started about two weeks ago. First a little information on my PC.-I built it from scratch and installed Win XP Pro successfully about six months ago.-Processor - 3.0 P4 HT -Ram - 1 Gig (2X512) Dual Channeled-HD - 80 GigNow the problem is that when I go to "My Computer"(Windows Explorer) I don't see my DVD-R nor my DVD-ROM Drives. The strange thing is that the Bios and the Device Manager recognizes them. In the Device Manager it shows the icon with the exclamation(!) on it. I go to the Properties screen and it tells me to something like "The device Driver was successfully installed, but the device could not be found." I switched out the IDE wire of the DVD-R and DVD-ROM Drives and its still the same story.Note: The only thing that I've done recently was switched out my hard drive for another and ran a utility on a floppy that wiped out the second hard drive. Then I switched back to my hard drive. After that the problem started to occur, but I'm not sure if it happened right after or not.If you need any more information just let me know. Thanks!

Hi there,
I am hoping someone here can help:
I just picked up my new W8.1 computer from the store and started playing with it. I inserted 3 GPT Hard Drives. All three showed in the UEFI but only one of them showed up in Device Manager and in Disk Management. No matter what I tried, I could not get those other 2 disks to show up. Finally, I decided to re-load the whole darned thing from the recovery partition and re-load all drivers etc. Now all three Hard drives I had inserted showed in Windows. (I looked at all of them - all are fine - no Hardware issues)
However: I later changed the positions of the hard drives ? i.e. the drive that WAS in slot 2 was moved to slot 1 etc. ? I?m right back to where I was before: All three drives show in the UEFI ? only one of them shows in Windows. This is my first machine with a UEFI. Is there something special that needs to be done to get those drives to show up in Windows?
One more thing: I also started the system using a bootable CD (Aronis recovery CD) and from here, all drives are visible.

Every time I boot my comp I can see that it has detected my second HD, but when I open windows explorer to get to it, it isn't there. It had the same problem with the CD player (I only have one IDE cable), when the CD player was hooked up it would show no drive in windows explorer but then when I'd pop a CD in windows media player would pick it up.

Any help please?

EDIT: It detects it in device manager, too. I cant find any way into it from windows though, not even with third party file explorer programs.

When I go to disk management under computer management, it says "Not initialized" and has a red circle with a white stripe in the middle for an icon.

Never mind, I got it. Just had to right click and hit "initialize".

This could really just be deleted, or go in the records of "stupid posts"

I have an issue with HDD letters being changed by the operating system. It is highly bothersome that I cant keep each volume letter unchanged so I can identify each one of my 6 hard drives + the Usb drives.
I always keep 2 HDD inside the PC tower plus another 4 inside an external enclosure. Additionally I have an external Sabrent USB-DSC5 Hard Drive adapter with one HDD or Optical drive connected to it and the PC.

Is it possible from Windows 7 to set it in such a way that the drives lettering e.g. C E F G H J K** etc etc remain linked to each individual HDD?

If Windows does not offer that capability how do I solve this need? Is there any known software I could install that deals with this issue and solves it efficiently?

All help would be appreciated.

Thank you kindly

I have a problem with my PC. It is simply can't read lot of USB drive. I need to restart in order to be able to read it. Sometimes it is working or else it is still fail to read.

I don't know what is the problem but I get this Inaccessible Function error. And when I checked at Disk Management, the file format of the USB flash drive shown as RAW.

I have Ubuntu on my PC (dual boot). And it is just working. Therefore for some reason, my Windows 7 is stupid enough to detect my USB file system.

Answer:Windows 7 cannot read usb flash drives

If it is RAW, it is not formatted and cannot be read or written to. Format it in Fat32 or NTFS and it will work. It was probably your Linux that mucked it up.

Hey there 7 forums!

I've just graduated from the Vista Forums (Thank god) with my purchase of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

So far, it's great; there is one little problem though:

Upon installation, i created a 50gb partition on my 500gb drive (Drive C: )

So, when I'm on my computer, it only shows one hard drive, drive C:, and with a maximum capacity of 50gb. However, i also have a 750gb hard drive, and the rest of the space on the 500.

I've looked into it, and its simply the "missing drive letter and paths" issue, and that's easy to fix. However, Diskmgmt.msc doesn't give me the option to do anything to the remaining 450gb from my primary drive.

Any help would be appreciated,
Thank you.

I am having some frustrating trouble with my CD drives currently. I'm afraid what follows is an ineloquent description of the symptoms my system is experiencing, as I haven't any clue what the direct problem is. I would truly appreciate some help.

I have a CD drive for reading and a seperate drive for burning. The burning drive won't recognize any CD - blank or with content. The reading drive still can read audio CDs, but only in a round-about way. (I am on Windows XP).

I've had both drives for a few years. They both worked perfectly up until last week.

Both drives still open and close. More curiously, if either drive is closed when I am rebooting my computer, I get at least 2 minutes of a blank screen before my Window log-in screen appears. The log-in page will load immediately if I then open both drives (or if I open them during the reboot, but before I get the long delay screen).

When I click on the reading drive through "My Computer" I get an error message saying that there's no associated file type for the drive. However, if I put an audio CD in that drive, I can still access the music through iTunes and WinAmp (both programs I've had, unchanged, for years).

The burning drive won't recognize any CD, period, blank or otherwise. It therefor doesn't burn either.

Answer:No drives were found...there are no fixed drives to show

From Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start:

Boot into BIOS setup to see if you can find any listing showing the HD is still alive. If so then run the maker's HD Diagnostic extended CD scan, following by a Disk Check from the installation DVD or Repair CD's Command Line.

If no sign of HD listed anywhere in BIOS - usually by a serial number you can google to find its make/model - then try reseating it or changing its cable to get it to register.

If HD cannot be made to register in BIOS, then replace it to do a Clean Reinstall Windows 7.

I remember older Windows versions having a user defined option to set the Drive/Directory cache options to increase the cache size. Is there such an option in Win 7 Pro 64?

The reason I ask is that ever since I put in an SSD for my OS drive, my computer takes 'forever' to load harddrive directories with a lot of files in it. (I installed it a little over a year ago; I've just putting up with it for far too long.) My understanding is Win 7 changes things when a SSD is installed, like I hear it stops Prefetch data from being collected. I just don't know what else it changes in this regard.

For example, say I have 'G' drive open, and then try to open 'E' drive in a second instance of Windows Explorer, it takes a while. And then when I drill down to the desired folder, it can, but not always, take up to a full minute or more to load the directory while the green bar up top moves across to the right. Taking 10-20 seconds is the normal. Meanwhile, the HDD light is on solid. I never had these issues before.

And then if I open a program, it will also now take a long time with solid HDD light. Some times it takes so long to open the program, Win 7 pops up an error that the program is not responding.

I have even rebuilt my Index but that didn't help.

I'm running 3 physical drives, all split into 2, for a total of 6 logical drives:
1TB SSD, drives C and J
4TB WD Black Caviar, drives D and E
4TB WD Black Caviar, drives M and G

Hi, I realize that the problem described in the subject may seem deceivingly simple to solve, however realize that it is not the case:

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 desktop with Windows XP Home Edition. I was attempting to reinstall Windows on it, however I could not get the computer to boot off of the disc. Thinking that I might be able to start the setup from within Windows, I booted into Windows only to find that BOTH optical drives cannot read discs (as in, they both tell me to insert a disc even though there is clearly a disc in the drive). The drives also appear in the BIOS, but cannot be booted off of either. And yes, I'm certain the discs are bootable, and even if they weren't, it would still be recognized in Windows.

Also, I ran Dell's (simplistic) diagnostic tool and it asked me to insert a data disc so it could run tests on the optical drive, except there were already 2 discs in both drives.

I have also double checked all cable connections inside the case, all are solid, and I have already flashed the CMOS. I have also updated to the latest (Dell provided) firmware updates for the BIOS as well as both optical drives. Any suggestions?

Answer:Bios and Windows recognize 2 optical drives, but cannot read discs in either

The Dell Dimension 8400 is at least four years old... or more.
Several of the 8400's came with HL or HLDS optical drives, which failed early and often. Yours are likely long dead. What you describe is typical of a failed CD or DVD drive for which the reader lense has burned out or the drive has slipped out of alignment dut to wear.
Luckily, optical drives (DVD-RW and CD-RW) can be found cheaply online for $19.94 US to $39.99, and are relatively easy to install. We recommend Plextor (costly but great), LG, Samsung, LiteOn, or Pioneer. I would avoid Sony, Sony Nec, Sony Optiarc, HP, Acer, Asus, HLDS, Arctec and Rosewill as they do not seem to last as long in our computers.

Yea yea, the dreaded SATA drive dilemma for fresh clean windows install.

But i read somewhere that any WinXP with SP2 integrated can read SATA drives for a fresh clean new installation... and that does include MCE 2005 right?

So can anyone confirm this is true? Also, I read you should get the latest drivers for your SATA drives once you login to Windows. So, when all this is said and done, will it have all the features and equal performance to a SATA drive that was originally installed with the damn floppy and stuff?

Thanks!

Answer:Windows MCE 2005 can read SATA drives for fresh install right?

Theoretically if a drive and controller work fine with AHCI calls and can be set for "IDE/ATA" mode meaning they appear as a regular old IDE/ATA controller to the operating system they should work.

For me, across several hundred builds, I've never had much success using any version of Windows with any SATA controller hardware unless it's pure Intel (almost always works except for the latest ICH7/8 controllers which don't have drivers in XP/2K3/MCE2K5 bare installer CDs/DVDs), or you get lucky.

I wrote a guide for adding SATA drivers to any Windows CD and making it a custom installer disc, you can find that guide here:

http://members.cox.net/br0adband/How_To_Integrate_SATA_Drivers_into_A_Custom_Windows_CD.zip

It's long, it's overly thorough, but that's just me. If it helps, so be it... if not, well, you'll figure something out I guess.

Good luck...

Hi guys, I have a fresh install of Windows 8 on my desktop computer. However I've run into some major issues with accessing my NAS (Media Server/Hard Drive)

#1 - I cannot for the life of me map my NAS as a network drive anymore.

#2 - This the important one, I can't see over 80% of the files stored on my NAS, only the most recently updated ones. I can see them just fine from my brothers laptop that came preinstalled with Windows 8, and no issues whatsoever with other computers on the networks on Win 7. Is this an issue with fresh installs? If so how can I remedy this?

If you guys could help out I would be very grateful!

2. Also an example of a file you can't see and it's permissions (right-click, Properties, security).

I have an external HDD that I have been storing loads of movies and TV shows on hooked up to my Windows 10 PC. I recently purchased an Android TV. I plugged the HDD into the TV and have been able to watch all the content fine but now when I connect the HDD into my PC the HDD isn't recognised. I went into Disk Management and I can see the drive but it's not been allocated a letter and it's partitioned really weirdly. I tried allocating a letter but it didn't work the way I had hoped only allocating a portion of the drive and now, of course, it recognises the lettered partition but it is requesting me to format the drive. After all this all my files still show on my TV and work fine.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Cheers.

I've yet to see a way of restoring BKF files backed up from Windows XP, into Windows 7.Pretty annoying when MS say to use NTBackup to backup your files on Windows XP prior to installing Windows 7.I delayed going from Windows XP to Windows Vista as I wanted to see what Windows 7 was like. Unfortunately without being able to restore my files, I'm going to have to ditch the RC and go back to WinXP. And hope that MS come up with an approach for properly migrating from WinXP to Win7. Otherwise, good ol' WinXP may have a few years left in it yet.And sad thing is apart from that, everything else was going well.Fingers crossed!!

Hi MitchRestoring files from the older NTBackup is not supported in Windows 7. There was a program released for Windows Vista that allowed restoring files backed up with NTBackup in Windows XP, but this restoration utility depended on the Windows Removable Storage Manager whichis not included or compatible withWindows 7.The only suggestion I can make is that if you have or know someone who has either a Windows XP or Windows Vista system, use that system to restore the files and then simply copy them toexternal media and then move them to your Windows 7 system. Hereis a linkfor your convenience.Download details: Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility for Windows VistaHope this helps.Thank You for testing Windows 7

Hi
Last night due to email problems I needed to access some hidden files in appdata so I ticked 'show hidden files' , and left it running over night as it looked like it was going to take some time. This morning the files are still hidden, and on a restart my task bar has completely frozen, programs are crashing when I open them (photoshop, Firefox ) and generally Windows10 is unusable. I've tried to restore windows to an earlier point but when I finish the process it says it has failed, and no files have been changed.
Any idea on how trying to 'show hidden files' could have caused so much damage? And how can I get it all working again?
Frances

Answer:'Show Hidden Files' has damaged windows 10

No idea unless something has changed/deleted some file(s). Those are hidden only from user's sight but system and programs can still find them. Probably just a coincidence. Most of them are also protected so you couldn't have changed/deleted them even if you wanted to.

I have Windows 7 64-Bit, all updated. I have a bluray writer/reader. Windows can run the auto setup but cannot "Open in New Window" or "Open" to view files inside the disk. Just won't open even after I click "Open in New Window" or "Open."

I have tried about 30 disks (bluray, cdr, cdrw, dvd, etc) and none has worked and all are valid disks.

Any ideas?

Hello everyone, I am very new to this entire environment. I am hoping that someone can help me. My friend gave me a thumb drive to upload some movies on it. However, when I plugged it into my computer it opened automatically into VLC Media. When I right click on the thumb drive and click open, it only shows me the videos on the drive. When I open the VLC playlist, the entire contents of the thumb drive are shown. There are even some docx files showing up as well. How do I get back to having Windows open the thumb drive entirely. BTW....I saved the entire thumb drive onto my desktop and played with it as well. I still had no luck getting Windows to open it. It says there are only 7 files when I use Windows. 123 files show up in VLC Media. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Answer:Thumb Drive will not show all files with Windows

Open 7zip archiver (if you don't have it, download it and install it)
navigate to that USB Drive and it will show you all the files in it

I recently purchased a DELL Inspiron 15 7000 series laptop computer.
Windows Media Player for Windows 10 will only play the audio portion of .MPG files. The video portion of the .MPG file will not play. (.MP4 files are working fine)
If I transfer the .MPG file to my (now) old DELL laptop which is running Windows 7, the .MPG files plays both audio and video...as one would expect.
This suggests to me the issue has something to do with the video card in my new DELL Inspiron 15 7000 laptop computer.
How can/do I go about resolving this issue so that I can play .MPG videos on my new DELL laptop?

can you guys help me .

Answer:windows explorer continues to show files of previous dvd

Go back. Get out of the Window for DVD A. You are causing Explorer to freeze up. There is a underlying issue but going back before you eject the DVD and insert the new one should get you the info.

Hello, I have a SDHC 8GB memory card with multiple video files on it. These files all can be played easily on the device in which they were written, which was a small camcorder. The problem now is however that I cannot access these video files when I place the SD card in my computer and browse the directory with Windows Explorer anymore.

At one point, I was able to access them normally and without issue, however in a stint of forgetful frustration, I removed the SD card without "ejecting" it safely, and I assume the information on it has become corrupted.

The videos, however, are still there on the card and I can tell they are because they all can still be played on the camcorder device they were created. On the camcorder, I can browse and play these videos, so they still exists on the card. It seems that it is just that now I cannot view them on Windows Explorer.

My question is: Since the video files still exist on the card, is their any way I can make it so Windows Explorer can re-recognize them so that I can view them on my laptop?

Just as a little side not, when the card directory containing the video files was corrupted, all that remained when I tried to go back in and view the videos was a single .FILE, whose name of which is a bunch o square boxes, and of which the computer identifies as having an invalid directory parameter or something when I try to open it.
Thanks

Answer:Files on SD card do not show up in Windows Explorer Directory

Hello and welcome Factor mat have you tried plugging the camera into the computer? and access the files like that?

I use SD cards all the time and I always forget to safely remove them but none are ever corrupted maybe the port needs a gentle clean? Thin piece of credit card with some LINT FREE cloth over the the end and a dab of alcohol NOT grog and gently insert the piece of card a few times.

Dear Experts,

I'm struggling with the following problem: After my XP SP3 runs for some hours it sometimes decides to drive me crazy out of a sudden. This means that opening a folder or opening a save dialog box takes ages. This weird behaviour does not stop until I log off and log on again. But that's obviously no solution. I have an up-to-date Sophos Antivirus and also scanned it with Symantec's Online Scan, Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0. Nothing found. Also the Hijackthis logfile is clean according to http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/inde...owtopic=123947.

I now installed SpeedFan 4.38 and it reports 57 Celsisus core temperature for the CPU and 67 Celsisus core temperature for the GPU in idle mode. It's an Intel Core 2 Duo T7400 with 2.16GHz in an Dell Latitude D620. The graphics card is an NVIDIA GeForce Go 7300. Is this a normal temperature or is there something wrong? Or any other suggestions what I might want to check?

Thanks in advance,
Ptob

Answer:Windows Explorer sometimes needs >20s to show files, no other suspicious activities

You can open task manager to see if there is high cpu usage. If so, you can check the processes and see what is eating up the cpu cycles. You can also check Event Viewer to see if Windows is logging any errors. This could help locate any hardware issues such as RAM or HDD. I've seen apps such as Window Blinds cause this issue also.

I have copied Winzip files from a previous Win/XP system to Windows 7. They appear as a normal folder when used with Explorer. However, when I search for a term, neither the files nor the contents of the files in the Winzip folder show up in the GLOBAL search. The file names do show up when I seach the parent directory of Winzip folders, however not the content. Please help. I use Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)

Answer:Windows Search does not show results from Winzip files

We can find the zip files via Windows Search, however we cannot find the contents inside the zipped files.
You're saying that if I create a zip file and place a goose.txt file containing the words "golden egg", and type in the word "golden" into the search box, it will not find the file.  However, if I type "goose" it will find it.You may be wrong about this...  On my system it actually does find the file by contents inside the zip file.  Today at least.I have permanently disabled Search Indexing.  That could be helping here.  Also, here are my search options:For those of you for whom it is not finding the expected file(s)...  Can you do the above experiment with a simple text file and report whether the search turns the file up in both cases.-Noel

I burned some files on a CD. AVI and DivX files. And the computer used to read them fine when I put them back in the CD-ROM and played or copied back to HDD.

I recently did a reformat on both PCs and installed all the same software back on the HDD. But when I put the CDs in any of the ROMs on either PC no files show up in the drive. One says that the CD may be corrupt or Windows does not recognize it. I dont understand. I dont have this problem with any other CDs, even ones that I have burned. Only ones with DivX or AVI.

When I try to manually open the drive in My Computer, it opens up fine. Doesnt say Please Insert Disk. Just doesnt show the file. I tried showing hidden files bo no go.

Does anybody know what may be the problem?

hey... I hope more people know what's going on than the last question I asked, lol.

My laptop is fairly old, and has had a little bit of trouble booting lately. When I start it up, sometimes it doesn't load windows, and instead clicks, seemly from the area where the CD drive is. One time it even said "Operating System not found", to which I really freaked and backed up everything. The clicking noise also happens when I try to read a DVD in the disc drive which used to be able to read DVDs. In other words, it's on it's way out.

Now I had the computer on, and I left for a few minutes, I don't remember exactly. What I do remember is seeing my laptop with the light on the power button on, the screen blank and one of the weird lights flashing at regular intervals. Now this wasn't unfammiliar either - when I've left the computer before, it's done that, and I can't hibernate it or anything. I pressed the on/off button once, hoping it'd hibernate, and since it didn't, I held the button down until it turned off.

But next time I turned on the computer (the next day), it came up with an unusual message. It said:

Windows cannot open this file:

File: Shortcut to msnmsgr.lnk

To open this file, windows needs to know which program created it etc. etc. etc, I'm sure you know what message I'm talking about.

But all of my shortcuts, like the ones on my desktop, looked like those un-identified file things, and had the extention .lnk that wasn't shown bef... Read more

While sfc is doing its thing please don't use the computer for any other work.

Have tried removing the library and re-adding it. No luck.

Answer:wma files in Explorer, don't show in Windows Media Player Library

Hi, I will assume you have the songs in a folder, and have added that folder to WMP's library.
(Organise, Manage Libraries).

I tried this with 6 Celine Dion songs, whose tags were rather random in their content.
They were all added, but whether I saw them listed by WMP or not depended on which view I chose.

2 examples:
All music - 5 of 6 were listed consecutively, 1 later in the list, probably because the contributing artist tag field had Celine Dion as the second artist.

Album- Only one was obviously listed as Celine Dion. 5 were listed.
The missing one had nothing specified in the Album tag field.

My suggestions:
a. examine the tags carefully. Are they consistent and complete?
b. try different views in WMP

I recently stumbled upon saved searches in Windows 7, and while they're great, I can't seem to get newly added files to show up in the saved search results. An example:

I have 1 folder where I store EVERYTHING, no subfolders whatsoever. Inside this folder, I saved a search for "music". A few days later, I decided to add a new file with "music" in the title, but this new file doesn't appear in my saved search for "music". I tested this with a folder that had music in the title as well, but no luck.

According to Save a Search, these saved searches should show the most recent results, so I'm a little baffled.

Thanks in advance!

I recently tried to install windows XP on my hard drive and it repeatedly stalled with 1 minute to go. eventually i got a new hard drive and installed windows XP with no problem.
When i started my computer with (both hard drives installed), a count down message showed and i thought that windows would try to continue the installation onto my original hard drive so i restarted the computer.
I changed the master/slave settings in the bios and the computer started properly. However i found that 95% of my saved files and documents on the old hard drive were missing. i don't think they were deleted as i did an upgrade and not clean install. however under properties there is a lot more free space showing than before.
I noticed that the file system under winXP is NTFS but my old hard drive running under win98 was FAT32. Is this the likely source of the problem? should i try using data recovery software?

Answer:does windows XP read fat32 files?

Hi Atilla,

I've never had a prob with XP and FAT32.

My current system has 2 HD's ; XP OS on the first is NTFS, backups on the second as FAT32.

The reason for this is that I can interrogate the FAT32 from DOS if needed.

Suggest you do some Clean Up, defrag, scandisk/chkdisk etc on your FAT32 disk to see if you can recover.

I've had Windows 7 x64 for a while now. I'm trying to do some wholesale track info editing with a program called Tune Up so I don't have to manually edit track information for thousands of MP3's in iTunes.
I'm having problems with that and I think it relates to the folders holding th MP3's being marked as Read Only. I've even deleted folders, and transferred files that are not read only to them. As soon as I create a folder, it gets designated read only. I've attempted to change ownership to the currently active user and administrator of this computer and THEN un-check the read only box, but as soon as I re-open properties, it is read only again. WTF. I know windows 7 is more secure than XP, and more pretty, but this is just an f'ing hassle. I want transparency, not a nanny of an OS. If I wanted that I'd buy a Mac.

Does anyone know how I can make this stop happening. Their my files. I want to be able to do whatever the hell I want with them whenever I want.

Answer:Windows 7 x64. Files keep reverting to Read Only.

Hey there,

It sounds like any folders you are creating are inheriting permissions from a parent folder. Here's what I would check:

Click Start, then Control Panel. Click 'User Accounts & Family Safety'. Then click 'User Accounts'. Verify that your user account is as administrator account. That means it should be part of the <YourComputerName>\Administrators group.

Go to the root of the folder that you are trying to work in (e.g. C:\music). Right-click it, select Properties. Go to the Security tab. The <YourComputerName>\Administrators group should have full control. Click the Advanced button. Select the Administrators group, and click the 'Change Permissions' button. Uncheck "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent". Place a check next to "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object".

In our example, we're performing this on C:\Music. Unchecking the first setting will keep the C:\Music folder from inheriting permissions from a parent folder (i.e. C:\). The second setting that you placed a check mark next will propogate the permissions for Full Control to C:\Music and any subfolders and files.

I think this should solve your problem. Post back and let us know. If it doesn't work, perhaps someone smarter than I am can chime in. =]

Windows 2000 user, with NTSF files. Had to reload a backup Word Processing System. Copied from a backup on CDR. Copied fine, executes fine, but every document file is read-only. Can make no changes to dcuments. Reading some Internet articles indicates CDR copies all files as read-only.

How do I remove them from read-only state, so I can change and edit files, and write them to hard drive again in changed format? Have tried Windows Explorer Security, but am either doing it wrong, or that is not the answer.

Any help for a non-nerd????

Answer:WINDOWS 2000 Read-Only Files

yes cdr's make files read only

if have admin rights you shouldbe able to simply rightclick the files in question and un-tick the 'read-only' checkbox, if u cant if u r an admin and the files are in ntfs format as you say u should be able to click on the security tab and give yourself full control of the file and/or take ownership of the file. you might have to do this first to change properties

I have installed Windows-10, and I'm encountering the problem that
I can't read older Windows help files (attempt to read them will result in
the display of https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/917607). I had the
same problem in Windows 7, but the problem could be solved by downloading
the winhlp32.exe program from Microsoft, and the older help files could
then be read. In Windows-10 I'm being offered to download WinHlp32.exe for
Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, but neither will install. Is there any solution?

I have a "data" drive, that I use to store all my data files, so that if i loose my operating system, I don't loose the data files.

This is a separate hard drive from that of the operating system one.

On my system, windows 7 sees it as the F: Drive.

On this drive are number of MS word, MS publisher, MS excel files.

Now when I access them with XP they work fine and I can save them. When I access them with windows 7, it says they are read only. I check the attributes to them and read only is NOT checked..

The program says I have to rename it. I do not want to do this. Is this another one of those "undocumented" features of Win7?

How can I overcome this obstacle and make it possible for me to overwrite my older files after I have made changes to them so that I don't have a bunch of files named the same thing with a number designation after to distinguish them?

Thanks.

Answer:Solved: Why does windows 7 say my xp files are read only?

Try copying the file and pasting it back in the same folder.

My primary HD is partitioned into C:\ for software and D:\ for data. After performing a full install of Windows 7 (from XP) all the MS Office 2007 data files on D:\ open as read-only files and have to be saved to another filename if changes are made. In the properties box for individual files they are not marked as read-only so I feel the answer to the problem is to do with "permissions" but cannot fathom out how to change the situation for individual files and folders. When I right-click on a file and follow through properties, security etc I am quickly lost as to how to proceed.I'm the only user of the PC and presumably automatically the system Administrator. Can anyone help?

Answer:Files all read-only after Windows 7 installation

To take ownership of a folder, right-click the folder, select Properties > Security Tab > Advanced at the bottom > Owner Tab > Edit > Highlight your username and put a tick in ?Replace owner on sub containers?? and Apply > OK. You will only have the ?Replace owner on subcontainers?? box for folders not files. Click Yes when you receive the Security pop-up window then click OK to the Close/Reopen message. Make a note of the previous owner in case you want to change it back. Now go back to the Properties > Security Tab. Click Edit > Add. Type in your User Account Name in the box under Enter the objects name to select. Click on Check Names > OK. Click on your User Account Name to highlight it. Check the box for Full Control > Apply and OK etc.Additionally, you may want to add Take Ownership to the right-click menu click here[2]=Networking%20Internet

I put a new system together for my son:

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-MA78LM-S2H
Processor: AMDAthlon X2 5000+
Memory: 2GB Crucial DDR2 800
Onboard video
IDE Hard Drive
IDE HP DVD writer
Windows xp Home

I was able to install windows without any problems. I then went to install the MB drivers. I put the cd in the drive and let it autorun. It opened as a music cd and the only file on the cd was a small cda file. Ok I though I must have gotten a bad cd. I went to gigabytes website and downloaded the latest drivers and burned them to cd on another pc. I bring that cd to the new build and same thing. The files show up as a small cda file. I bring the cd back to 2 other pcs and they both are able to read the cd and see the driver files. I then place the windows xp cd in the drive on the new build and it is also read as a small cda file. I then reboot the new build pc and boot from the windows xp cd and it reads the disc fine. So the dvd drive works fine and the media is fine. What is wrong with my windows installation????

I have tried mr fixit but it did not work. I have looked for the upper and lower filters in the registry and they did not exist. Does anyone have any ideas?

I was uninstalling a program this morning and restarted my computer, when I noticed all the shortcuts were coming up as *.ink and My Computer and My Network Places came up as "Folder". I cannot run exe files (Windows asks me what program it should use to open the file) and I cannot run system restore or a virus scan. I tried booting up in safe mode, but same results. Ahhhhh! This is driving me nuts since I can't run ANYTHING to try to fix it.... Hopefully one of you can help me out!

Answer:Windows XP Won't Read EXE Files! Yikes!

Anyone??? Obviously Windows CAN run exe files. I'm actually accessing the internet from the buggy computer... Any help is appreciated.

I have been doing this on XP for years, is it the homegroup thats causing the problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Windows 7 share folders with no password...

Not sure, but you may have to password protect the PCs to be able to make the changes required for sharing. Hopefully, someone else can clarify on this...

Hi,
I've been forced for time reasons to use a flash drive of mine to deliver some files to a customer. Before I give it to anybody else , I use to empty it. But now I'm afraid some private files of mine might be stuck in the recycle bin. I know flash drives on Windows usually don't have a recycle bin, but I read some models do. I also read you can't access somebody else's recycle bin from a different machine, since Windows marks all the files with a specific user ID. But what if there were a recycle bin, and somebody used that flash drive on a Mac/Linux based machine? Would he be able to see the files, since the recyclebin is just another directory to MacOS? Thank you

Answer:Read Windows Recycle Bin files on Mac

Can you give more details regarding "I use to empty it"? What do you do exactly to "empty it"?

Hello,
i have a 6 year old computer that has died(M/B failure). It was running vista 32 bit with a lot of word files that I need. I am thinking of replacing it with a newer 1150 pin m/b and i5 cpu and appropriate ddd3 memory and load win 7 64 bit onto my old hdd. Will the newer operating system recognize the word 2002 program and the word files? will it even see the various partitions that exist on the hdd? The word files are very important.
Hoping someone can help me. Regards old dog

Answer:will windows 7 64 bit read vista 32 bit files

There should be a way to open those word files without any major hassle depending on the actual file format used...

Assuming that the HDD itself is not damage, you should easily be able to access the data many ways even if the OS itself i no longer functioning.

For example the easiest way would be to build your PC and install Win7 onto a new HDD. Once you do that, attach the old HDD as a slave drive and bam, ya should see that drive and access it like normal.
If it is just the M/B failed, you could still use the current OS to boot the vista even on that new MB (sometimes it works), and simply backup your data

If you only have the one HDD and it will not boot windows, you could use Hirens or some other bootable disc to open a virtualized windows environment to access the information and transfer the data off of it onto a flash drive or something.
Depending on your partition setup you could transfer the data onto a single partition and then install Win7 onto the other partition.

**BEFORE** You install Win7 on that old drive, you need to retrieve the data first, otherwise the data will be all lost.

I have a Visual Basic 6 app that reads files from a shared network folder and then processes them.  It was installed on two Windows XP computers many years ago.  Now we want to upgrade it to Windows 7.  I have two different computers with
Windows 7.  When I connect the Windows 7 computers to the network and run the app (which has a File Watcher window) and am watching all 4 computers, I noticed that the File Watcher window of the XP boxes show the files about 2 seconds before the Windows
7 boxes see the files.  What would cause this?  Everything else in the app works as it should.
The apps are running as Administrator on the Windows 7 boxes and XP compatiblility mode.  I have tried it both ways.
Confused...

Hey there...ok...I have some files that are saved from the Macs at school...when I take them home to my PC (Win) they don't have the extensions on them...when I originally save something from Windows and take it to a Mac and modify and save it then take it back to my PC it still has the extension and keeps it since it was added by Windows...

So I am wondering something...is there a program for Windows that recognizes Mac files and andds the extensions back??? I hate when I start work on some things at school and have to add the extensions to all the stuff I created when I take it back home...my guess is the Macs store the extensions or what the file opens up with or whatever in their "._(filename)" files...that's annoying too...for every file you have another is created with a "._"...

Any help on this??? THANX
C'YA

Answer:Files saved from Macs don't have ext.'s when read on Win. Need sftwre 2 read & convrt

I've never had that problem. If you save it as a "xxx" type document it doesn't matter if you have the software that created it on both Mac and PC (or software that can read the format) so I don't know how/what is going on with your situation.

BTW my experience is with using Word (forgot which version but it's on OS X) on a Mac and OpenOffice on my PC.

As described in the topic, after a malware attack the option to show hidden files on my pc has changed into a string of question marks.

I have since cleaned up the malware and any viruses on my pc (at least I hope so, MBAM and Avira are reporting no infected files) but the question marks still remain. Would anyone here have a clue how I can restore it back? Alternatively is there a way I can double-check that my laptop is really rid of all traces of virus.

Apologies if this is in the wrong section.

Answer:Windows "show hidden files" replaced by a string of question marks

It may be that your Windows files have got corrupted. Make sure all your Windows files are ok using SFC tool.Open Start Menu > Run and type sfc /scannow and press enter.Note: It would ask you to insert Windows XP CD so be ready with that.

My sister inlaw had an old computer given to her and she wants to use it for her daycare business and just surfing etc.

I have never ran across this before. It boots up and get s to the desktop and here is where its weird. If I click my computer>c drive? then WINNT it does not show any folders in the window like there is nothing there but if I click on the folders button on the toolbar it opens up a drop down box on the side like it is showing windows explorer and it will have the WINNT file open and you can see them in there but not in the big window.

If you open the my computer> c drive> then program files it is the same thing nothing in the window but if you click on the folders button on the toolbar it opens up like the program files folder and in the drop down box again like it is opening windows explorer on the side. But still nothing in the window.

Also if you go to add/remove programs there is nothing at all in it, it shows nothing and the button on the bottom of the window that says close instead it says Cl&ose

I ran sfc /scannow and I had a 2000 disk and it took some files off of it but still doing all this stuff. I don't want to do a clean install and if I do a repair install will it want the product key from the 2000 system that is already on there which she doesn't have or will it settle for the product key from the disk I have with just a repair install.

AND do I have to do a repair install or is there something doing all of this? Can... Read more

Can someone please tell me what to do??? My computer won't recognize my CD-ROM drives when I open My Computer, there not there, but when I look in my device manager it shows both SONY drives there under rom-drives with a little highlighted question mark. I think I may have deleted the drivers on accident but I don't know how to get them back. I have already been to SONY.com but that got me no where. Both my SONY CDU5211 CD-ROM drive and my SONY CRX140E CD-RW are powered and are plugged in correctly they are just not showing up as being valid drives. I would be greatly obliged if anyone could help me with this problem, cuz I have no clue what to do.

Can someone explain why my attached drives show twice? I only had this happen on one USB
drive before the Windows 10 recent update, but now both external drives are repeated twice! (See attached)

Answer:Why do my drives show twice?

@ CallMeSteven:

Apparently, MS added this feature for quick access to Removable Drives in the navigation pane for users who never have 'This PC' expanded.

It takes a simple Registry tweak to delete the entries:

Drives in Navigation Pane - Add or Remove in Windows 10

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\DelegateFold ers
and delete the sub key:
