Deleteing Files and Folders

Question: Deleteing Files and Folders

Hey all. I've noticed that some folders and files around my comp. won't delete. I've tried to put them in the recycle bin but it says it's in use. I've looked at the processes list and don't see them anywhere as well. For example, I did a clean install of Windows XP Home and I found out I have a folder called, "xerox" with nothing in it and it won't delete. I'm guessing this is dell's problem since I used their disk. Well anyway, how can I delete these? Is there a command in DOS I can use? Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Deleteing Files and Folders

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Question: Deleteing Folders

Please help. I have a folder that I cannot delete. As soon as the cursor hits the folder it refreshes the desktop. I have attempted in "save mode" I was atleast able to hit delete but then an error message came up and it refreshed the desktop again. It needs to be deleted. I have tried running AVG and Ad-aware but when it reached that folder it stopped running. I am stuck. Plus I cannot restore computer to previous date.

Any solutions?

Answer:Deleteing Folders

Hello and Welcome to TSF

What type of files are in this folder?

Try MoveOnBoot
MoveOnBoot allows you to copy, move or delete files on the next system boot. This can come handy if you need to replace or delete files that are locked by other applications, loaded into memory or cannot be changed until next system boot.

Using Sonic's MyDVD 5.2. When copying a DVD to the hard disc it creates a folder wherever you specify to put the DVD files. However, this folder has no name and any attempt to move or delete the folder results in the message : Cannot delete file. Cannot read from the source file or disk. I've tried del tree, safe mode, regsvr32 /shmedia.dkk (whatever that is, recommended by HP) and trying to use taskmanager. I've also tried Norton utilitiles. Anyone have any options? Does it seem I will have to go into the registry, and if so, what program will assist a nonexpert type like myself. Many thanks to all

Answer:Deleteing folders with no names

Found my own solution

The key to deleting these types of files and folders is to find their real name, and the way to do that is to run cmd and then dir /x. This brings up the filename in the old DOS manner of truncating windows file and folder names. From there you can delete as desired.

Question: deleteing files

Can anyone help me delete some files for the prefetch file? I keep getting an error saying the file is busy or damaged.

Answer:deleteing files

Well, here is the path: C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
You have to turn on 'View All Files' under folder options, because the files in this folder are hidden. Then find the file that is screwed and delete it.

I had a file that was downloaded with limewire and i couldn't delete it from the folder that it was download into because it had an invalid file name. I asked questions on another help site and got all the wrong answers. So, I walked away from the computer for awhile and thought about it. With a clear mind I sat back down and opened limewire and went to the library for it and deleted the file from there. Now after all of the brainstorming it was a really simple answer to my problem. Hope this helps some of you that has problems with files like this one I had.

why would vista take forever to move delete (permanently and moving to recycle bin) and copying files. it's not really the operation that's slow but the calculating time remaining stays up forever after the operation is complete and keeps it from starting for a long time?
anyone have any ideas

Answer:calculating time remaining moving, deleteing, copying files verry slow

because many handles and processes are working simaltiousely, your hard disk activity is so busy with all processes, so it should need so long time for this, add to this, you need UAC to be on and shows you prompt message for file operations.
Good luck

In the Navigation tool, Windows 10 provides a list of ways to access folders and files, including Quick Access and a group of other file or folder names. If I click on something in the group of folder names, not all files in that folder are shown eg. 'Documents' is one folder name, but if I search under OS C: and find my 'User' name and the the relevant folder, there are more files there than show up using the group. This is frustrating as looking under 'OS C: Users' is time consuming and requires lots of clicks, and I'd have thought the main purpose of having groups listed was to avoid this.

Answer:In Windws 10, why do folders in libraries or Quick Access not show all files in the actual folders?

I found this GREAT FREE program which can help to protect your files from all kind of Ransomware.
At the end is my video test and here is article from about this program.
The program is Abandonware but is working very good.

Secure Folders is a free program for Windows that is available as a portable version and installer. It can be used to hide or lock folders, set them to read-only or block the execution of files.

If you share your computer at times, for instance in your family or when friends or colleagues ask you whether they can access it, then you may want an option to protect certain files or folders from accidental exposure.

Maybe you don't want someone else to spot your Justin Bieber wallpaper collection, financial documents or video files that you have downloaded from the Internet. Whatever it is, Windows does not really provide options to protect data from others if the same account is being used.

Note: it is best obviously to use different accounts, for instance a guest account for occasional users and accounts for colleagues or family members who work with the PC regularly.

Encryption is a solution but only if you keep the data encrypted while the computer is being used. It won't help you if the encrypted drive that you store all your secrets on is mounted at the time someone else accesses your PC.

Help! I'm stuck.
I have a folder from which I need to delete a number of files but for each attempt to delete a file the error message comes up "Can't read from source disc or file". And yet the file can be opened in an application and the contents appear undamaged.
Thye same goes fort attemting to delete a folder, - the same error message appears. - "Can't read from source disc or file".
If I attempt to create a new folder so that I can download some images fromm my camera I get the error message "Unable to create the folder "New Folder"., - File system error (65535)".
Basically, the files / folders all seem to be OK and can be read by applications (Photoshop etc.) but I can't delete old ones or create noew folders. Any clues? Has some sort of overall disc protection been applied?

G'morning all,

We're looking for a program that will allow us to password-protect folders on Windows XP. I've seen all the other threads on this subject and the linked programs and web pages (e.g. PC World's article; Cryptex) but nothing that does what we want.

There are a lot of programs that come up on Google; has anyone used any of these? I've tried a few demos but I'm looking for any other recommendations.

I would very much appreciate some help finding my missing files and folders if possible.

I am running windows Vista version 6.0, service pack 2.

I started windows, and noticed that 5 of my desktop folders were missing, and all of the files contained within. A search for document and folder names returned nothing (even with advanced search options). One of the missing folders was called "term 1". I created a new folder, and tried to change the name to term 1. A pop-up told me that this destination (desktop) already contained a folder named "term 1"- did I want to merge these folders? I was confused, because I could no longer see the original term 1 folder. I clicked "yes" hoping that a merge would result in a visible term 1 folder, but now the new folder also disappeared. After some intensive searching, I could not find any of the folders/files that were missing. Some other folders/files were still visible on my desktop though.

I restored my computer to a previous checkpoint (from 2 days ago, after a windows update). After reboot, I received a message that the restore was unsuccessful. At this point, all of my desktop folders and files were gone, aside from windows default desktop icons. A search returned no results. I remembered that restore can fail because of an AV program, so I disabled Norton. I tried to undo the restore, which was successful, but no files/folders returned. I've got an annoying problem with my small office network. There are 3 PCs on the local network and we share files. Usually (but not always) if you are in one of the shared folders and you want to create a new folder, once you've right-clicked and created the new folder, you need to navigate away and back again in order to actually see it. This also happens when re-naming the folder.

To be clear this is what happens:

Right click, select 'create new folder'

Nothing appears

Use back and forward buttons

New Folder now visible

Rename folder, but it reverts to being called New Folder

Use back and forward buttons

Folder now appears with the new name.

Two PCs are using XP and one Vista, it happens ot all of them. Only happens with shared folders.

Any ideas how to fix this?

Many thanks

I have been having problems with my laptop lately to say the least. I realized that it came pre-installed with Vista 32-bit but that I had a 64-bit processor so I added in an extra gig of RAM and did a clean install of Vista 64. Other than many, many devices not working at first (including the ethernet controller) due to driver issues, it was working fine. I had previously backed up my files in Vista 32 and tried to restore them after the installation, but the only way to do this was to use the "restore from another machine" option because Vista thought my backups were from another system due to the restore. After getting everything to restore correctly, I noticed that I had lost many administrator privileges that I had before.

After a few days, I got a blue screen of death and when the system restarted itself it said that a hard drive failue was imminent and I should backup and replace the drive. Unfortunately, it would not allow me to backup so I had to replace the drive and restore again with the same backup that was from "another system". I am having the same problem with rights to files and folders. Today, for example, I was using TuneUp Utilities' defragment utility and there were large parts of the drive that were "locked" and were not able to be moved. I assume this is because I had no rights to them after the restore.
My question (after all that!) is: how can I get the rights to all my files back safely and easily. I tried to go ... Read more

Some malware has been giving me constant grief for the past few weeks. I've spent a lot of time trying to unsuccessfully solve this myself and am now at a loss for how to proceed. Symptoms as follows:

Whenever I'm connected to the internet, avast keeps detecting infected files in a couple of places on my hard drive. Most commonly, they're files with a false extensions that appear in my Network Service folder's Tempoary Internet Files e.g:
C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\5EMN1H8B\zhwh[1].gif
These seem to get created every couple of hours when I'm connected, regardless of whether or not I have a web browser open. avast will delete these files, but they'll reappear later with a different filename and extension (always something like .gif .bmp .jpg etc).
Slightly less frequently, avast detects an infected file at C:\WINDOWS\system32\x. Again, avast successfully deletes this file, only for it to regenerate later (filename is always the same for this one).

This has been a problem now for about a month (see attached avast log from Jan 29 2010 - I'm not sure if it's relevant that avast at first recognised the infection as Win32:Confi [Wrm], but is now picking it as Win32:Rootkit-gen [Rtk]). I suspect a couple of potential sources from around that time:
1) A flash drive that was infected by a colleague's PC (when I plugged it into my computer avast detected a mas... Read more

NoVirusThanks File System Protector is a powerful utility which uses a kernel-mode driver to completely lock a file or a folder and to deny write access to files (allow read-only). You can write rules for any process or only for specific processes, you can lock files or folders and you can also protect files from modifications (write access) so that processes can only read the file content, but not hijack or modify it. With NoVirusThanks File System Protector you can protect sensitive files and folders from unauthorized accesses or modifications, a swiss army knife against nasty ransomware like CryptoLocker family or to just protect important files.

On the ?Settings? tab you can specify a custom logs folder to save blocked events, and on ?Exclusions? tab you can manage trusted applications (using wildcards), so they are excluded from the block-rules. To edit the default rules or to create your custom rules, open the ?Rules? tab and then click the button ?Edit Rules? (it may ask you Admin credentials) to edit the Rules.DB file. The rules are updated in real-time and writing rules is very easy, you can use wildcards characters and aliases, example:

[%OPER%: DENY_ALL] [%PROC%: *] [%FILE%: C:\locked-file.txt]
[%OPER%: DENY_ALL] [%PROC%: *process.exe] [%FILE%: *\LockedFolder]
[%OPER%: DENY_WRITE] [%PROC%: *] [%FILE%: C:\read-only.txt]

I cannot move or copy files, folders, or pictures when using the XP files & folders task manager LINKS on the left side of window. These links will no longer move or copy files to new locations. I just get instant hangup when I click these links provided in XP view. When I try to close the hungup window it shows that it is not responding. I find no alerts in control panel/administrative tools/event viewer.
I am still able to copy/paste the files and also able to drag & drop. This is a slight inconvenience & hopefully fixable?

Now in C: i have the new installed windows 10 and it's working fine.
But on D: i have the old windows folder and also the folders: Program Files, Program Files(x86) and ProgramData

And when i try to delete all this 4 folders i'm getting in each one of them a message:

This is how i'm trying to delete:

In this case the Program Files folder but the same message i'm getting on the other folders.

Answer:Can't delete Windows and all Program-files-files(x86)-data folders why

You need to give yourself a full permission and take ownership of the folders.

1. In Windows 10 type cmd.exe into Start Menu, right-click on Cmd.exe, and open it as an administrator.

2. Type following commands:

Takeown /f D:\Windows /r /D Y

Takeown /f "D:\Program Files" /r /D Y

Takeown /f "D:\Program Files(x86)" /r /D Y

Attrib -s -r -h D:\ProgramData

Takeown /f D:\ProgramData /r /D Y

Icacls D:\Windows /grant %Username%:F /t /c

Icacls "D:\Program Files" /grant %Username%:F /t /c

Icacls "D:\Program Files(x86)" /grant %Username%:F /t /c

Icacls D:\ProgramData /grant %Username%:F /t /c

After executing the commands try deleting the folders.

Hi ALl,

My sister was using the laptop browsing on websites and sunddenly the computer went off. Upon restart we could not access Internet Explorer button, the control panel, my computer and all system applications such as them were not visible on the start menu in the corner on the left hand side. All folders/files on the desktop were gone and an antivirus software kept coming up that was not known. I know a bit about computers and run AVG Free in safe mode and removed the anitvirus that was actually the virus itself in form of Trojan virus. This helped slightly but I still cannot see any files/folders that was previous to the virus. AVG now says the computer has no viruses but it is still not back to normal.

Any help will be much appreciated

A friend of mine asked me to take a look at his PC, it's a HP Pavilion a1510n, running XP Media Center Edition. He has lost hundreds of files and in the folders where the files were is this small file called AXEL.DAV, there are over 2000 of the files in just about every folder on the pc. I have run Ad-Aware but it didn't seem to find anything. I have attached a HJT log. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm running Windows 8.1 64 bit.
When I plug in an SD card or USB drive into my computer all the files and folders are replaced with .lnk files with the same name as the original. In addition, all the files and folders are hidden, and I don't seem to be able to unhide them.
This does not happen every time I plug it in, but it happens fairly often. The motive behind the lnks is clear when I look at its properties. Here is an example of what one looks like replacing a file named splash.lua:

%SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c "start %cd%splash.lua & start %cd%wyNdYUwEdFccnce.exe & exit"
It is starting another hidden file which is the virus.
I've run full scans with Malwarebytes AntiMalware, and Avast free Antivirus, but they found nothing. I even tried Malwarebytes AntiRootkit, and it found nothing either.
Possibly related to this, a folder appeared in the root of  both my hard drive partitions called $Recycle.Bin. I've heard of other people with this identifying it as malware, so I figured I should mention it.
However, the thing that worries me most is that if I didn't notice that the files were .lnks, I would have no idea anything fishy is going on at all. My antiviruses said nothing, and there's no reason to think I would have a virus.
Is there anyway to be sure there is no malware at all after I take care of it? For all I know, someone could be recording all my passwords and everything I type and I would have no idea.
Thank you very... Read more

Answer:Files and folders on external storage replaced with .lnk files

Seeing that no one responded to your topic yet, I'd suggest you open another one in
I would approach your problem using Farbars Recovery Scan Tool, but as per forum rules I can't give you instructions regarding that on this forum, so I can't help you in that regard in this topic.
When you create another topic in the other forum section you could include a report from USBFix: (alternate download: click "descargar").
Once downloaded start it as administrator (right click > run as admin) and when prompted connect your drives containing .lnk files. After that click 'research'. When completed a report will open (can also be found at C:\usbfix.txt). Post that one to your new topic.
You can open USBFix once again and this time press 'listing'. It will create another report detailing your various filesystem root locations. Attach that log file, too.
Best of luck.

Is there any way in windows 7 the show hidden files and folder and show system files, however hide only desktop.ini's and thumbs.db? Don't need to seem them. Annoying.

Answer:show hidden files folders (exclude files)

Hello event3horizon,

The only way that I know of would be to have Show hidden files, folders, and drives selected (dotted), and to check the Hide protected operating system files box. Of course, all hidden protected OS files will hidden as well. Hidden Files and Folders - Show or Hide
If you like, you could use the context menu from either step 2 or 3 in the tutorial below to quickly toggle to show or hide all hidden files when you like. This way you see them all when you want to, and none when you don't.Show - Hide Hidden Files - Add to Context Menu
Hope this helps,

Just bought a new HDD and moving large amounts of files and folders.
It appears that 'random' folders and files on my old hdd wont move to their new destination because I dont have permission to move them ?

The only way I can get them to move is to go into file->properties->security.. assign myself as an owner, then add myself to group/users and give myself full control.

If I do this to a 'folder' it gives me permissions errors about the 'files' inside the folder (i.e does not propagate downwards) so I have to do it to files ONE BY ONE which is taking ages and ages to move stuff...

why the hell have i lost ownership of seemingly random bunches of files ? and is there an easier way to get it back ?

Answer:Moving files / No permission random files/folders

Yes, there is an easier way : Add "Take Ownership" to Explorer Right-Click Menu in Win 7 or Vista.

Good luck!

Some days ago, i wanted to borrow my laptop to my friend, so for security purpose i right clicked on each drive and on Properties \ Security \ Group or user names \ Edit and i checked "deny" box for all items for the users. it worked fine and ll drives were locked.

Now, i want to regain access to my files and folders but i have some issues.
i went back the above procedure and checked the "allow" box. It gave me access to open drives and folders but i can't open any file!?
It seems like i have restricted myself and i can't get out of it

I also tried below procedure:
right click on drive \ properties \ security \ Advances \ Owner \ Edit \ Administrator (Replace owner on subcontainers and objects)

it didn't help

Note: my user is Administrator
I Use Win 7 Pro 32 bit

i really appreciate any comment

Answer:Windows 7 Pro security for files and folders has restricted my files

When changing permissions, only do so for Groups and specially the User's group. Right click on the "Computer" icon and choose "manage". Then go to "Local users and groups", then "users". Look for the default Administrator account, the original and turn it on if it is off. Log in as that account and set permissions again.

Hi there,
This is my work computer, so I don't have total control over it. I do have the administrator password. Windows 7 Pro SP1, it's one of 3 terminals connected to a Windows Server 2008 server. This contains the database for the business (small hotel).
So today I get to work to find the MSE icon orange. I open it, and it's asking me to restart the computer to complete the cleanup. I go to History, and find multiple entries of these:
Under the "Ransom" entries, the only file listed is HELP_DECRYPT.HTML. When I go to the folders, there is that file, and there are two more: HELP_DECRYPT.TXT and HELP_DECRYPT.PNG.
All our files though, appear to be OK, unencrypted and healthy.
I understand these files themselves are not the ransomware, but I am wondering how they got copied to all the folders. Is it possible for this trojan to run without adminsitrative privileges (i.e. someone had to enter the password)? If not, how could these HTML, PNG and TXT files have been copied to the PC?
I'm also trying to figure out how this might have happened. We have security cameras covering the front desk, and at the time the files are indicating on the "date created" "date accessed" "date modified" fields, which is the same date and time, no one was apparently using a browser. The resolution on the video is bad, but I think I can... Read more

Why would the Find Files/Folders start showing many, many more files than it should? The returns aren't all matching the request and the lists go on forever.

Answer:Find Files or Folders lists all files

If you give it a four letter file to look up, it will give you every instance of those four letters in a row even if they are in the middle of a larger word or span words.

if you can keep your head while others around you are losing theirs then there is something you don't know

Hey everyone.

I have a 500gb hard drive that is partitioned into 4 drives. My disk layout goes something like this.
[C=40gb] [D=200gb] [E=150gb] [F=85gb]

My C drive is almost full, so i want to find the easiest way to "knock down the wall" between the C & D drive and make it all C drive.

I was told on another site to copy everything in my D drive (which is almost empty), and move it to another drive. Then delete the D drive and expand C into that unallocated space. Sounds easy enough for me to do.

The one question brought up that no one has answered yet is that if my C drive holds my OS and system files, (which it does), Disk Manager may not let me expand that drive. Has anyone ever tried this, or knows if it will work?

I would kinda like to know before i give it a try. Running Vista Ultimate 64bit.

What i want to do is delete all my OS on their and just install my original one back. Their all installed on my Cartition I wanted to find out how to delete them off.

It ask if i want to delete the partition but i didn't know if it meant just whats on the partition or the entire partition its self.

I didn' t want to mess up something that couldn't be fixed.

Basically if anyone could break this down in dummy terms on how to do this it would be muchly appreciated.

Answer:Deleteing Os from computer

will u're computer boot to the CD or DVD drive first? if not go to the BIOS and set it where it is the first selection, then put the Windows disk in the drive and boot, when it asks if it can boot from the CD tap a key any key, it will start loading drivers let it when u get to the part that asks if u want to reformat hit enter (make sure u are on the C: drive) then it will reinstall Windows and it will be on fresh without anything. after the reinstall be sure u reinstall the mother board drivers first then update windows as u would normally. before u start it would be a good idea to have the drivers for all hardware, either on cd or on another partition.

I just installed windows 7 on a computer that had been running windows vista. Its an hp pavilion dv6700. The computer had 2 partitions, the boot one that had like 11 gigs and then what I thought was a large data one that had like 175 gigs. When I was installing 7 I was trying to delete both of the partitions because the computer was broken, windows vista had been going awol so I was trying to start fresh. Well, I was unable to delete the larger partition, so i just installed windows onto the smaller partition and was hoping that i would be able to mess with the larger one once i got windows all set up. I still can't. When I try to format or delete the large partition it tells me I cannot mess with the system partition. Windows vista is still installed on that partition and so is all the stuff that was on it before, so its a relatively useless partition since its all full up.

How can I go about removing that partition? Any ideas?

Answer:Windows Xp... Self deleteing??? HELP!!!

Sounds like you have a case of the "desktop cleanup". Another GREAT (sarcastic) feature of windows XP.

This is used to delete stuff from the desktop if it has not been used after so long (i think its 60 days).

Anyway, to stop this from happening:

Right click the desktop, then click the "tab" called "Desktop", then at the bottom click the button "Customize Desktop". A new window pops up, and at the bottom you should see the feature called "desktop cleanup". Uncheck the "Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard every 60 days". Then just click ok to both windows.

I hope this was your problem.

~Hope this helps

Edit: Oh, and i think your mom has lost her files, unless you buy a program which has a file recovery program built into it ... such as Norton Antivirus... but even that might not work.

well i want to delete an account on windows. i have 2 accounts, 1 is administartor and 1 is limited. when i try to delete the limited account, it says "permission denied". I have windows xp media center edition.

Answer:Need Help Deleteing An Account!

well administrator is administrator you usually are not suppose to use that account unless you want to change something around the system while in safe mode.
Limited means you have no permission to install programs or change system settings. I just made a limited account for my little sister because she always $crews up my laptop while playing with it so now she wont mess it up.

this is what you should do:
once you turn on your computer press your " F8 " button to choose " Safe Mode " > now log in as Administrator > go to controls panel> click user accounts> click on Limited (ur account)> now click " Change my account type" > select " Computer Administrator " .
Now log off and you can now use that account as if your the administrator.
or if you want to delete it then delete it while log on Administrator in Safe Mode

Hi, my PC has been acting up and my hard drive free space started to change from 4.00 GB before the reboot to 38.7 GB after the reboot and I didn't delete anything. Now, my media files in my folders and subfolders are missing and saying "folder is empty," my wallpaper and desktop icon disappeared, my programs in the "program" folder of the start menu saying "(empty,)" and now my IE and Firefox has been hijacked. Even some of my software on my computer has stop working or stop loading up (such as disk defrag) and all of this happen after I rebooted my computer.

I wanted to know if there is a way to fix this? I did some Google searching to see if anyone else had this problem but I only found very little on the subject. I don't know if it's a user shell problem or not.

I wanted to also add that my user profile logo on my XP logon page has defaulted as well after the reboot.

Seems like a virus problem, since u didnt changed anything, and ur browsers are hijacked. What antivirus are you using? Boot into safe mode and scan your PC. Also run scans with some antispywares. Hope it will help.

Have been on a mission since reinstalling Vista a few weeks back NOT to use anything tweaky, so no CC etc :) Anyway I have been aware that many cookies (such as for this site for example) do not get deleted for some reason when using tools> internet options> delete history> etcWhen I used to use CC that deleted the lot unless you specified otherwise. So back to IE8 and I found some do delete and some don't... something to do with how regularly a site is visited I think, so a bit of research turned this up, click herewhich seemed to work and give a clean start.

Answer:Deleteing cookies in IE8 .... learnt something new

It's also corrected something which is a bit bizzarre to me.Have Google as a tab to open with IE8. For the last few weeks the first line of text on Google UK page, the line that says "web images videos" etc has been both "faint" as if written with an incredibly fine pen and also doesnt appear UNTIL you move the cursor over the page at which point it "fades" in slowly. From deleting the cookies it's all back as it used to be ! Can't explain that one at all.

Are you sure the OEM partitions are really empty?

You can delete them, but if you do, you will not be able to use whatever files or information is on them.

They normally are not empty, even if Disk Management says they are empty.

Hi all,
There's a file showing up in a folder of mine which I previously deleted.
When I try to delete (or anything else) the file in explorer, it says "Item could not be found"; confirming that the file itself has been deleted but for some reason it's icon is still showing up.

I've tried to fix this in the following ways:

Creating a file with exactly the same name then deleting that
Using the terminal to delete via "DEL"
None of these work and I'm kinda stuck for ideas.

It's not exactly important, but it really bugs me to see this phantom file every time I open up my Downloads folder.

Anyone have an idea? I'd be realy grateful.

Your computer has a disk larger than 512 MB. This version of Windows includes improved support for large disks, resulting in more efficient use of disk space on large drives, and allowing disks over 2 GB to be formatted as a single drive.

Answer:Format C: Only deleteing 10Gb not 80!

Try looking in the BIOS first to see if your computer can handle 80 gig, it very well could be your motherboard that causing it to not see the whole 80 gig. Try flashing your BIOS first and see if you have any luck. Good Luck

Hello all, I currently have 3 files that I want to delete, but won't delete. The file sizes are 0 bytes each, yet the icon still remains on my desktop. When I try to delete them, it gives me an error stating that the item was not found and is not in the location that it is in. It asks me to verify the location and try again, when try again is pressed, the same prompt appears. Is there anyway to remove these files from my desktop?

Answer:Deleteing a file that won't delete

Try one of these -

Undeletable File - Delete

File - Delete from Command Prompt

Always try Unlocker if that doesn't work. Most likely does the same as above though.

Hi, I've just set up my University email to download to my PC through Outlook 2002 using IMAP.I can't find how to delete messages. When I delete the message gets a line through it and greys out, but stays in the inbox, dragging it to deleted items only makes a copy there. I have deleted the message from the server and still it remains. Is there a setting I've missed? Also is it possible to delete mail in Outlook and have it deleted from the server too (as with POP3) or do I have to log into my account at Uni and delete from there?

Answer:Deleteing IMAP email

I am useing windowds xp....a few weeks ago i downloaded some some pics off teh internet. Every time i try going into jasc paint shop photo album to view the pics it will not let me. I accidently downloaded them into my music folder instead of my pic folder. It will not let me move delete or nothing. If i go into my music folder there are a couple of files there( the pics that I downloaded). If I right click on any of them it does not even have the option to delete it. Only says open, preview, sent to, rotate either way, edit, print, and set as desktop background. If I go into my photo album there is only 1 thumbnai. The thumb nail is a box with another box inside it. In the middle of the little box is just an x. Inbetween the border of the 2 boxes is a pad lock. I can clcik on it and it gives me the option to unlock but when i click on that it does nothing. I want to get rid of these but am at a lose. What can i do to get rid of these? How can I unlock them to delete them?

Answer:deleteing a locked pic i got frm download

I am now hooked up to several email groups that are sending me vast quantities of mail, which is good. However, I can forsee a problem that will soon arise. I want to keep the mail for a while (about a month) then it will no longer be current and can be deleted. But I can see no way to do this. I can delete ALL the mail but I want to delete only some mail at these times. Is there a simple way to do this?

Answer:Deleteing mail in Outlook Express

In OE, set the "view" with at least the "folder bar" and "folder list."

You'll see the directory tree on the left and the individual emails on the right. Use your mouse to click on the emails you want to delete while holding your control key at the same time. The messages you have selected will turn grey. Then just push "Delete" or the red X and they'll all go into your deleted items folder (the ones you've selected) - to be deleted emasse manually or automatically upon exit depending on your setting in "Tools - Options - Maintenance."

Completely gone in all the folders! I have ran Ad-Aware and the sytem is now clean and I did a complete scan with Mcafee and it came back clean as well. Everything else on the PC seems to run fine with no problems, has anyone seen this problem before or know what's going on??

My son is running XP. In an attempt to clean up unnecessary garbage after he downloaded a mischievious Opera and his system started freezing up, he deleted some cookies. He deleted Opera but his system is still freezing up. He ran Spybot and Avg, but both of them kept freezing up too. That was last night.
This morning I started his Defrag and it is running at this time.

What I mean by freezing up is that the mouse won't behave properly. It freezes and then suddenly will move irradically so that there is no way to click on or out of anything. So, we reboot, and for a short time it behaves. Then it will start sticking again.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:After deleteing cookies, system freezes

Sounds like you might have a virus on your PC. I'm not sure what avg is, but Spybot will only get rid of of spyware thats on your PC.
From my experience, I have found that this small program from McAfee called "Stinger" works quite well in removing anything that might be a virus or something similar. You can download it from here:
Scan your hard drive with it and see if it helps.

Hi all i've been looking for a way to extend the space on my C drive and came across this forum and after reading some posts i thought great i can delete D drive and put the 52gb in to C drive but then came across this.
Which is what i have in my disk management!

I went through the initial steps of this tutorial and found that the first volume listed in Computer Management is a "Disk 0" or perhaps Disk capital-oh O.

Its status displays as Simple Basic Healthy (EISA Configuration)

What is this thing? The overall readout for the computer's harddrive?

Do I need to be worried about it if I want to delete the D: partition?

It's a 120GB harddrive, with 51.14GB on C: and 50.89 on D:, yet 9.76GB on this mysterious Disk 0.

I'd like to merge all three into one C:.

(Many thanks for your work here! VERY well done!

After reading some replies it seems you can't merge all three!
What i want to know is can i just delete D and put it in to C without touching the 0 drive????

cheers pete

Answer:Hi all newbie here please be kind (deleteing D drive!!)

Hello Pete, and welcome to Vista Forums.

This sounds like the D: and the EISA partition are your OEM Vista factory restore partitions. It would not be recommended to delete these partitions if you ever wanted to be able reinstall Vista.

If you really wanted to delete them, then you should create a set of OEM recovery discs from your computer so that you can use these instead to reinstall Vista with.

What brand is your computer? I'll post back with instructions on how to do this from your computer manufacturer's website.
