Xp Question ?

Question: Xp Question ?

Windows XP came installed on my Sony Vaio computer. However,Sony does not include the XP disc itself, you have to make your own recovery discs. My question is, what about the utilities that are not installed by the default installation of XP? There is a back up utility I would like to have and use,but since Sony does not include the disc,I am out of luck.I don't agree with this,I paid for XP and I feel I should have access to all of its utilities.Has anyone else dealt with this problem and had a satisfying answer? I will write to Microsoft for help, but I have a feeling there won't be an answer that will be all to satisfying.Am I wrong to think I should have these utilities?Any suggestions how to get them?Thank you to all who respond.

Preferred Solution: Xp Question ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi folks,  After several weeks of research and contemplation, I finally decided to order a P50.  I'm excited for it's forthcoming arrival (hopefully by the end of the week). I had a quick question regarding an SSD install.  I've read several of the threads about it and I just wanted to clarify before it arrives.  I've ordered a 512gb Samsung NVMe M.2 drive from newegg.  I've also already acquired the m.2 mounts/brackets from lenovo. Can I just install the new drive, remove the stock (500gb hd) and do a clean install of windows via a thumb drive/rufus or will I run into trouble with the P50 recognizing it?  I'd rather do a fresh install and not clone them if possible. Thanks for all of the help.  I'm really looking forward to getting this machine configured and operational. The configuration I ended up going with is as follows: - FHD (non-touch)- Xeon/M2000M- 500gb hd (ordered the samsung NVMe and 2tb samsung hd to replace the 500gb hd)- 64gb non-ECC (I was going to upgrade this later but with the discount portal it was way less than aftermarket)- color calibrator (ehh)- backlit keyboard I'll hopefully get a docking station in the near future but need to do a bit more research on that front.

Answer:NVMe Question - Finally ordered a P50 (Thanks for all the advice) - One last, quick question

I did a clean install to a new NVMe drive when I got my P50. I did it with Windows 10 on thumb drive. I didn't even have to enter the product key. It was completely painless. Good luck!

I haven't been on windows 98 or 98SE alot so I was wondeing, If you put a Cd-writer (burner) in a computer with windows 98 or 98se (which I just did) why when ;you go to my computer and right click on the E dirve is there not a recording tab and other tabs like in windows xp, I know the answer will probably be------because your not using XP----------But I was wondering. The one I put in had NERO with it and I like NERO anyway however I would like to know for future purposes.

Why when you go to mycomputer and right click on the E drive (the burner) don't you have the recording tab and the rest like XP. I like doing it that way in XP where you can move all files or copy files and then go to the burner and say write these files to cd.

Does windows 98 or 98SE have this and I am just missing it or is a burning program like NERO or another the only way to use the burning in 98 or 98SE?

Thanks for the help

Answer:Solved: Windows 98 and/or 98SE-question about burning CDs, is there a record tab etc-Question

lol, you answered your own question, windows 95,98,98se,and ME don't support cd burning, except with 3rd party software. When you purchase any of the NT systems (ie: xp, NT 4, Server 2003, 2000 PRO etc...) all have the NT kernel which if you look during your install say " Windows (whatever version) is built on NT technology" and "You now have built in CD burning" soon and perhaps with the upcoming service pack 2, it will start coming with DVD burning capability.

I believe the only windows kernel out that currently supports cd burning is the NT one

Hi guys, I'm a huge noob when it comes to networking.

My HTPC is using onboard wired network on an Intel D865perl motherboard. My bedroom computer is using wireless G- both are connected to a Belkin PRE-N router. I transfer my downloaded data from my bedroom to the HTPC downstairs.

Would I get faster transfer/streaming speeds by adding a PRO gigabit 1000 network card?

Would I automatically get faster speeds if I install it, since I read that the gigabit requires a bit of configuration.

Thanks guys!

Answer:Quick Noob question, question on /1000 card...

Gigabit wouldn't help since your bottle neck is your 54Mbps G wireless.

Outlook Express Question:

I just bought a new computer and want to move my spam filters (message rules and blocked senders list) to my new computer. It has taken me two years to build this filter system which has hundreds of rules and blocked senders. It was very effective cutting my spam from about 75-125 messages a day to about 3 or 4 a day.

Jumpdrive question:

I am using a 128 mb jumpdrive to move files from old computer to new. Can I compress this jumpdrive to double it's capacity and if I do is there any downside to doing so?

Thanks for all help offered.

Question... does anybody have any examples of "contracts" or "scope of work" documents they have clients sign when they do a new networking job? Just curious to see some examples... might be looking to get these implimented into our jobs so that if a customer says "hey we were promised xyz" i can turn back to the document and go "no sir you were not, this is what you and your sales person agreed upon"

we run into it a lot where i go on site and a customer has one idea in mind when i was sent there under a completely different intention...

we do CCTV/networking things (structured cabling basically, mostly commercial sometimes residential).

just looking for examples of contracts/scope of work documents i can use to create our own

Answer:Business Question: Scope of Work/Contract Question

In my experience there really isn't a template for a scope of work (I'm usually the one paying vendors & consultants), basically what it boils down to is a line item list of what it is you're going to do with some detail about each part. So perhaps in your example it would read:

Install 1 SuperAwesome-o CCT camera on NW exterior of building, setup scan to cover 100 deg of coverage on parking lot, cable to back-end monitoring system, verify functionality
Install 1 SemiAwesome-o interior CCTV camera above recoptionist desk to cover front entrance. No scan, cable to back-end system and verify

etc, etc, etc...

Ok so, I've got a Dell Dimension 3000, 2.8GHz Pentium 4, 512mb ram.

Im doing an upgrade due to my lack of a video card and sufficient ram for games. *I'm upgrading strictly for gaming*
I'm adding ram, going to have a total of 2gigs. Did it on crucial and it should work fine.
Now as many of you already know the Dimension 3000 only has PCI video card slots. So, I did some research and found the best possible card for my mobo. (At least I think) The x1550:
And just recently I saw this:

Also, what kind of Shaders and Vertex shaders do these have?

Another question, again assuming I'm getting the x1550, I see the recommended PSU is 420W. Now, my original dell PSU is a 250W. Google your PC and said you have a 250 Watt power supply (may be true or not but hey..its Cnet that said it) On Newegg it said that the 1550 needs a 420 watt or greater...From those numbers well...You'll need a new power supply. Or you can just upgrade =D

Answer:Big Video card compatiblity question + power question

I am also using Dell Dimension 3000, and I upgraded all Video Card, RAM and PSU already, so I think I can help you a little bit here.

First, which games do you want to play? Because if you want to play newest games, then I'm sorry, you will have to buy a whole new computer. X1550 and 2gb of DDR RAM won't help you anymore.

Second, as far as I know, X1550 is the best for PCI now, but X1300 is really slightly behind. Many people believe they are the same. You can easily buy X1300 from newegg. You bought mine with $20.00 cheaper from eBay, but I guess money is not really your problem anyway.

Third, I have used X1300 and FX5500 and didn't see any problem with Dell Monitor at all. The only thing you need to be careful if you decide to buy X1300 is that there are two kind of X1300. Don't buy the Small Factor version because it is made for special kind of computer, and it won't fit into your case. The one you should buy look like this:

Fourth, even though many people suggest that we should only use Dell PSU because the other PSU won't fit into the case, I am actually using this one of Antec:
It fits perfectly.
And yes, PSU upgrade is a good idea. I believe my system is working very well, so you should have at least 350W PSU. DON'T buy cheap PSU.

Hi all, I was wondering if someone could inform me on what nic.exe, coo.exe, and dnar.exe are and if they are something to raise an eyebrow at. I have them showing up in processes on some of the computers I work on and not on some of the others. I can't seem to find any information on these processes and what their purpose are. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Also on a machine I work on, its an IBM Netvista, the machine comes up w/ an error related to csrss.exe. After some research I learned that this is a name which many hacks will use to disguise programs. I did some checking and in the processes I have two csrss.exe processes running. I can not end either one - I get the message they can't close they are windows blah blah blah's. However, on some of my other machines, my Dell Optiplex GX400 for example only shows up w/ one csrss.exe process. One other thing i noticed is that on the machines that have two csrss.exe processes running, one is running at about 1600k - 3000k and the other approx 180k, making me believe that the 180k one is not supposed to be there, when on my other machines, the csrss.exe process runs approx the same as the 1600k-3000k process on the NetVista. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Out of all the questions to ask, this one took up the most space on my whiteboard, so here goes.

I am developing my own TELNET application. When data is recieved, I have a sub break it down, chatacter-by-character until it comes to a formatting tag. At the tag, it sets three Private RGB integers to the color specified, then, deletes the tag from the incoming string, and continues normally, applying the color formatting to the characters, and adding them to a RichTextBox. Sounds simple? Here's the question. When I apply the color formatting, it does not appear in the RichTextBox. Here is the code I use:

Text1.SelColor = GetColor
Text1.Text = Text1.Text + temp
Text1.SelStart = Len(Text1.Text)
Text = Right$(Text, Len(Text) - 1)

Text1 is the RTB, temp is the character picked up, Text is the incoming string, GetColor is the RGB() of the three variables mentioned earlier. Yet, the color is not displayed. Why is this?

Shouldn't be too hard for all of you....

PS---I am programming in Visual Basic 6.0

Answer:RichTextBox Color Question---(easy question)

I'm not sure you can colorize an RTB without subclassing it and using the WinApi functions. I may be wrong though.

I am searching for a solution at a networking problem:

Like a router, where there is a DHCP server on the router,
I need a 12, 16 or 24 port switch that is able to assign specific, preconfigured IP address to each individual port.(ie to port 1 via DHCP protocol, to port2, so if I plug a DHCP client device into port 1, it will get as its address, plug the same device to port2 gets

The switch also needs to be SNMP capable for monitoring, so it's probably going to be a managed switch.

Anyone know of a solution? please let me know.

Answer:Switch question: per-port DHCP question

I don't think you are going to get exactly what you are looking for as I don't think it's possible. The only thing I can think of is to create a VLAN for each port. Then use an IP helper for each VLAN.

I feel like this is a little dumb, but I haven't been able to really find the answer.

Can I hook up my POE injectors right at my switch in the basement, and just run the output CAT cable from them to my AP's? All documentation seems to read that I need to run my CAT to the approximate destination first, then POE injector at a nearby plug, then a short run to the AP.

Answer:I feel like this is a dumb question - POE injector question

You should be fine to put the poe injector at the switch end as long as your total cable run isn't over 300'

Ive only had the privledge (and by that, I mean, enough money) to build a single CPU (with my brother, it was his) in my life. I recall it has (still works apart from mobo, only recently replaced) a intel core 2 quad. I see people talking about bent pins and stuff on CPUs, but I dont remember pins being on the core 2 quad. that was the easiest part I recall, just literally placed the chip in the socket (the heatsink, that was a headache). I dont recall any pins. Are pins literally pins as in thin rods sticking out of the bottom, or what?

Answer:Sorta random CPU question (no problems, just a question)

Most modern CPU's (Intel at least) no longer have pins on the CPU, but instead the pins are on the socket.

The newer socket 1155 and 1366 (and 2011 for that matter) are just like the Socket 775 you are experienced with the Core 2 Quad you installed, just slightly larger sockets.

It is still very possible to bend pins though, but in this way, you damage the motherboard (with the CPU socket) vs. the CPU. You must be careful when inserting the CPU since dropping it on a corner into the socket CAN bend and damage pins.

So if you've built a system with Socket 775/Core 2 Quad, you should have no problem with Core i3/i5/i7 and newer Intel sockets if this is what you plan to do. Everything is basically the same... just slightly different socket and DDR3 memory vs. DDR2, which are also very similar and just snap in the DIMM slots similarly.

I hope that helps! Good luck!

Hi folks / performance gurus

Got an old server 4 HDD storage bays and SSD with Raid 0 -- created 2 arrays of 2 logical HDD's but 4 physical HDD's (1 array 2 X 4TB, 1 array 2 X 3TB) --

Is this better than creating 1 array of all 4 HDD's - I'd lose some space because the arrays have to be the same size.

I'm not too bothered on other issues of RAID 0 -- I want the fastest HDD SPEED I can get out of the system - I've plenty of backups so HDD failure here isn't a primary concern.

SSD is the boot device - works fine -- just need info on setting up these 4 HDD's for the best performnce -- Storage array is set up in BIOS before Windows boots.

Help here appreciated -- I can usually get stuff to work (old Engineer) but don't necessarily have the knowledge to optimize performance.

Answer:Windows RAID 0 question performance question

What do you need the array speed for if you have an SSD as a boot up drive? If it's just for storage, raid 0 is like putting all your eggs in 1 basket..I know you have backups but having those drives independent of each other will give you less chances of a failure and headache.

My question is simple.
In the past I have used a OnePlus One, but it lack of ergonomy and it have a lot of problem due to lack of android support and horrible touch screen.
Now i'm evaluating the new Lumia 640 and 640XL.
I'm a photograph and i like smartphone that make very good photos.
I'm near to buy a XL for the better camera (13MP) and Zeiss Lens, but i'm undecided....
- it's too big the 640XL? Is good the ergonomy? Or is better loss some quality of the camera... and go with basic 640?
After some week of OnePlus... i had pain to hand for the bad ergonomy of this phone.
I have tried 640 and 640 XL into a shop, but I think that ergonomy can be tested only in daily use.
What is your suggestion and experience? And if you suggest "basic" 640 i will lost a big amount of quality due to the 8 MP camera?

Answer:A simple question... it's better 640 or the 640XL? Ergonomy and other question

Would you consider a Lumia 830?
The 10 MP, Zeiss Lens, PureView, OIS shooter is very nice. Very nice. It surprises many, including Lumia purists.
The size and feel of the device may be more in line with what you want ergonomically.

Hi i am currently running xp sp3 and was wondering if the fire wall it has built in is good enough or should i download 1 on line? and if so what 1 should i download.

Also a couple of friends of mine were having issues with there computers and the installed cc cleaner on to there computers and it cleaned out there registries and they say that there computer ran better. Now my computer isnt slow but it is not running like when i built it i mean i have done much downloading and stuff so but the loose of speed is not enough for anyone to notice but me. Motherboard and revision:-DFI LANPARTY UT NF4-D ATX
Motherboard Bios rev:-
Video card:- eVGA Geforce 6600GT
Operating System:-None yet
CPU and System Cooling:-3 Case fans, mobo fan and cpu fan, gfx card fan

I have three case fans, all which have a 3 pin connection that attaches to the motherboard and a 4 pin (same as Hard drive sized power supply connector). The 4 pin connectors have both a male and female end so that they can go inline with another part or could even be daisy chained together. My question is which line of the power supply should these be connected to?

I have a few options, I could connect one or more to the cable the contains a few 4 pin connectors and a 5V/12V power connector at the end for the motherboard or I could daisychain them on the end of a power supply cable marked (VGA/H.D.D). Also do I need both the 3 pin motherboard connector and 4 pin power supply connector, connected or are these two seperate option, which I merely need to choose one of (ie. Motherboard connection OR Power supply 4 pin connection). If so, which is better to choose?)

Answer:Case fan question and other power connections question

If you connect them to your mobo then it will be able to monitor their speeds via the yellow wire. If you connect them to your PSU it doesnt matter which 4 pin molex connector you fit them to as they all join up inside the PSU. Another option is to buy a fan speed controller and plug them into that, the advantage is that you can control the speed and therefore the ammount of noise they produce, the more expensive controllers can also monitor speeds and temperature(s).

Hope that helps. Rik.

I am a very big halo fan! I think it's one of the best FPS games out there! But I have to say that I was really disappointed with the ending of Halo 3. I hope I don't spoil it for anyone, but I figured the game's been out for awhile so I can talk freely about the ending. I didn't quite understand what all happened... Did the Master Chief really die? After I beat it the first time it put me in a bad mood because I love the Halo series and am almost finished reading the books as well and I couldn't believe they would kill off the main character. lol. I'm a nerd yeah. But did they really kill him off? I honestly couldn't tell for sure. May be a dumb question but I figured I would ask. Thanks guys!

I am looking at ASUS or Gigabyte in the 4 slots of DDR4 2133 or higher flavor.
I was looking at this wikipedia page on motherboards.
B150 looks like an attractive price point for me. We dont use many USB ports.
What does "PCH PCI Express configuration" mean?
B150 - 8 ? 3.0
Q150 - 10 ? 3.0
H170 - 16 ? 3.0

Q170 & Z170 - 20 ? 3.0

Some motherboard specification sheets state (O.C.) meaning its overclocked. So I need to OC the ram in order to get that speed. Other spec sheets just state it without (O.C.) statement.
Gigabyte B150M-D3H GSM w/ DDR3 1600, 7.1 Audio, Gigabit LAN, 2-Way CrossFireX, HDMI, DVI-D, VGA at Memory Express

4x DDR3 DIMM sockets for up to 32GB RAM (4x 8GB)
- Supports standard DDR3-1866 (OC) / 1600 / 1333MHz Non ECC UDIMMS

How long will it take for the i5-6400 (listed below) to get to around the $125 mark?
I was figuring to start with the G4400 then buy the i5-6400 later.

Pentium Processor G4400, 3.3GHz w/ 3MB Cache $85 2 core 2 threads
Core™ i5-6400 Processor, 2.7GHz w/ 6MB Cache $255 4 core 4 threads

Okay, I'm buying a new hard drive and I'm looking for the best deal I can find. I have a K8V special edition motherboard and a 120 GB hard drive (Maxtor, not sure if SATA or not). My motherboard can support 2 SATAs but beyond that I don't know how many hard drives I can support. What I'm looking at is a 300GB hard drive "Maxtor 300GB 7200RPG Ultra16 PATA Internal Hard Drive" with 133MB/sec transfer speed. For the same price ($149) I can get a 200GB SATA with 150MB/sec speed. Three questions:

1) What's PATA, and can my motherboard support it?
2) Which hard drive am I better off getting, assuming I can use both?

Next, I recently tried upgrading my Windows (from XP to XP <_< there was a problem with getting SP2). I made it to the point where you have to reset your computer and go from there, but when I did the Windows setup ran into a missing file and couldn't go further. I restarted and had the option of choosing whether I wanna start up in normal XP or in the XP setup, so my original Windows is intact. But now I get that choice whenever I turn my computer on, and I'd like to know how to remove the XP setup as an option for starting up. Thanks for the help guys.

Answer:Buying hardware question, also Windows question <_<

So I recently setup a domain for small non-profit company.

The domain is, but they also have a website

Users can sometimes get to in a browser and sometimes they can't.

When I do an nslookup I get the IP of the server returned.

What can I do so when they want to get to website they get there, but logging into the domain takes them to the DC?

Answer:Quick Domain Question...maybe DNS question

You've found out the hard way why the windows domain name should never be the same as the external DNS name. 8)

AFAIK you have four options:
1) "Re-educate" your users to type when they are at work
2) Use a proxy server and have it redirect to your web host
3) Install IIS on every domain controller and have it redirect
4) Use a registry hack on every domain controller:

100GB's = 102400MB's and yes always best to copy all your personal stuff over to an External hard-drive. Though if you are just going to fling the laptop, you could remove the HDD and attach it to your new PC using a caddy the copy your files ETC over and then keep it as a backup.

I'm having a problem with my computer. It lags a lot now and sometimes after it lags badly enough, it crashes <an automatic and complete shutdown> before I can even touch anything. Right before it cuts off, it goes to a blue screen and talks about collection for a memory dump and also suggests that I utilize the memory diagnostics tool. Its usually so quick that's all the info I can actually give. I have used it twice to receieve no results. Since it has started I have wiped most of the programs I have installed with the exception of ventrillo, msn im, and yahoo im. I have also since done a defrag and disk cleanup. Still no changes. The thing thats funny is that it has only just recently started this... the reason why its funny is because I am using a notebook <Acer Extensa 5620Z> and I used to have World of Warcraft installed and played it daily. I would sometimes have lag issues, but in the year I had this laptop and running WoW... I never once crashed like that and never saw the memory dump. Now I'm trying a system restore, but I don't have any restore points prior to the 24 Oct 2009. Can you please help me to rectify this problem?

Hi people! My question is a little out this place, but I can't find the right forum for this question. Maybe matadors will move this to the right place for me. I'm looking for a device, that can take a Video Tape and a DVD-R, and copy that tape to the DVD, so that I have it on the DVD, not on an old fashioned tape anymore! I have a large library of videos, and I would like to transfer them on to a DVD (consume some space for instance). I saw this kind of device at Target, maybe I can find it on internet for a cheaper price! Your help is very appreciated!

Firstly, I was looking at my logs for Spybot and it doesn't seem to detect anything from my second hard drive, which has the the same Progs installed as my main drive and SpyBot detects files from those. What gives?

Secondly, I was wondering if I should use Disk Defragmenter? Apparently, if you lose power while it's defragmenting, you're pretty much screwed because it moves your files.

I just wanted to know if I could do the following with no problem or if you cannot do it this way.

There is a windows 98 computer upstairs (with DSL) There is a modem--then a router---the windows 98 computer, I think he has the windows 98 computer upstairs hooked into the router and then another line in the router running downstairs to a windows XP SP1 computer. they both work fine. Here is my question.

He wants to add a third computer downstairs,so can it be like
THe modem then router then the windows 98 computer upstairs hooked into the router. Now is it possible to then plug like a four port hub into the router and have the line running downstairs and then take the windows xp that is already down there and plug it into the hub and then the new computer plug it into the hub and they would all have the dsl just like the two of them do now,

I guess I am asking can you plug the one compute upstairs into the router and then run a cable downstairs into a hub and plug the other two computers into the hub and they will all get DSL?

or do you have to plug the upstairs computer into the router like now and then plug two morre lines into the router and run them both downstairs and run one to each computer?

And as long as everything is going throught the router no matter which way it is done do you have to run anything special to get the DSL on all? Some step by step instructions would be nice but I really want to know if the hub thing will work the way I am describing it. Thanks... Read more

I know it's best to use two of the exact same cards and I probably will do this, but I was wondering if 1. Could I use an MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming 4G and a MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming 4G Gold Edition? They are basically the same card. Here is a comparison between the two.

2. I was wondering if my Corsair HX 850w PSU will have enough juice for them. I might overclock some. I'll be getting a i7 5820k (6-core CPU) with 16GB of DDR4 RAM. MSI X99S SLI Plus mobo and of course two GTX 970's. I'll also get the CM Hyper 212 EVO HSF as well. I have a WD 1TB 7200 RPM HDD and I'll be getting a Micron MX550 256GB SSD. I'll just get another MSI 970 like the one I have now, if the other is a problem. I have an Optiarc DVD-RW burner, but might get BR burner. I think my Corsair HX 850 watt PSU is enough, but I want to make sure. Also using a CM HAF 922 case, might upgrade to the 932. I currently have Windows 7HP x64.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:SLi Compatability Question and Wattage Question...

Yes, they should work since they are both GTX 970's. The Corsair HX 850 should also be enough, each card only draws 145 watts of power, you want at least a 500 watt PSU for a single card system and around a 750 watt or better for an SLI system.

More info on SLI here:

And more info on the power consumption here:

Sr. Citizen now, and would appreciate some help..
Have had an HP Desktop for a number of years.
Not perfect, but have had good luck with it. Time for a new one, though.

Am considering another, new Desktop with W10.

Their site doesn't allow a comparison, item by item, so a bit confusing.
A lot of the nuances escape me now.

Was wondering if anyone has a spare minute or two, can discuss the differences between their
three Envy Dektops with W10:

And, if worth the price differential for the two that are more expensive ?

750 z for $ 650
750 st for 700
750 qe for 850

I do a lot of internet surfing, playing wit Photos (of the Grandkid, naturally), but no gaming, social media, etc.
A fair amount of YouTube viewing.

BTW: Think a Lenovo or Dell Desktop offers better quality ? Why ?

HP Desktops still thought of as a "reasonably" quality built product ?

Much thanks,
appreciate the help,

Answer:Sr. Citizen Question: Which HP PC Desktop Question ?

Difficult to tell which is best.
the stuff you mention you do on the PC is not very heavy for both the Processor and the amount of memory used.

Whether you prefer Dell or HP or Lenovo is more or less the same as why some people drive a BMW/ Mercedes or Volkswagen.
None of them are bad.... but you might like one better than the other

Some general specifications:

Processor: I3 is minimal, I5 would be better
Memory: 4GB minimal, 6GB better
Hard drive: preferably an SSD 256 GB (Solid state) for Windows etc en a 2 - 3GB normal drive for your data.
Screen: HD 1920 x 1080 22inch diagonal

Hope this helps

So i have overclocked my system for the first time, i did it the "safe" way, increasing the "CPU Frequency" in the BIOS by 1 at a time. It seems like Frequency 200 is 2GHz. So when i reached 220, it was 2.20GHz.

But if i turn it up to 221, then the CPU runs at a clock speed of 1.78GHz.

I was thinking this could be because i use the stock cooling?

If so i need to buy a new cooler (which im thinking to do, a Zalman Fatal1ty should do.)

I am at 37c idle with this one now (the stock cooler)

Mobo: Asus A8N-SLI SE
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ @ 2.2GHz

Thx for help.

Answer:Overclock question {Nub question}

maybe your cpu heats up and the cpu/mobo automaticly underclocks the cpu for safety at 221fsb it's multiplier should be 8(original 10). (or it may be Cool 'n' Quiet) i am not sure.

Secondly, is there an easy way to just simply upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit? or do i have to wipe clean and start over? And im just wondering if all my drivers will work...

AMD 6000+, Geforce 8800GTS 640 MB

CPU Question.

I read somewhere that you need a BIOS update for vista to recognize the AMD processor.. my computer reads it as like.. ???processor??? or something..

Where is the link to this bios update? I cannot find it.... and.. do you think this is actually decreasing my performance?

Answer:Memory question/ CPU question

It doesnt use it. The video card and other devices need the address space, so windows has no way to access the ram that also is in that address space.

Its far more useful to be able to access your video card, than the extra ram

And until you start running out of memory, you wont notice any difference with being able to access 4gb.

Looks like a second copy of XP was installed to a different folder, this is called a parallel install. Post the contents of your c:\boot.ini and we can tell you what to remove. There is also likely a defunct windows directory that's taking up space as well.

The more I try and learn about backups and safe storage the more questions I have.

Here's my latest. I have two identical SATA III 1 Gb hard drives, designated "D Drive" under Win 7 64 bit Pro. They are under an Intel software RAID 1 on a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 motherboard. All appears well. I have the OS and my two mail apps on C: Drive which is an SSD drive. I use Second Copy to automatically back up both mail apps to the RAID 1 D drives each night. I also use Z-DBackup to make a system image of the C Drive once a week, which it creates on the RAID1 pair. The RAID 1 pair (D Drive) with the system image is backed up to LTO4 tape once a week.

What happens if on of the RAID 1 pair of SATA III drives fails? I guess the Intel software RAID flags a fault? I then have to work out which of the 2 drives is dead, and swap it out? What if an identical drive is no longer available? Will any 1 Gb or larger SATA III drive work, paired with the one remaining original working drive?? Does the RAID rebuild occur automagically? How long might one expect it to take?

With a truly unlucky chain of events, leaving the PC dead or missing, say from a power surge, theft or whatever, and I just have my tape, how do I go about getting the C Drive image from it to a new PC? Do I run a repair disc, load the tape deck drivers and the SCSI card drivers (it runs on SCSI on an Adaptec card), then will there be enough "stuff" on the new PC to load ... Read more

Answer:Software RAID question, and NAS box software question

Regarding your questions, first I want to say that RAID 1 is not a viable backup solution. Its only purpose is to allow a system to continue to operate with a hardware failure of one of the hard drives until that drive can be replaced. It is imperative to have the data on the RAID backed up elsewhere.

If one drive fails, the controller will warn you so that you may replace the bad drive. It knows which one.
Depending on the size of the drive, it can take many hours to rebuild, but you can continue to use the system as normal. The rebuilding is transparent.

If you use dissimilar drives, the array size will be equal to the smallest drive and it is not guaranteed that all combinations of drives will work together. You may experience constant rebuilds or worse.

I cannot comment on how to get your system up from tape. I have never used it. With other backup methods, there is usually boot-able media that allows recovering the operating system.

Whether or nor another board can read what is on the RAID 1 will really depend on the controller. I have had luck using Intel controllers. In fact, the data was readable from a single disk without using RAID.

I doubt if a different NAS could use the disks should the box hardware fail. You may be able to get the data though, by connecting one of the disks to a system that can read the file system used by the NAS.
The redundancy is within the NAS while it is operational. It would be nice if you could just get any NAS hardw... Read more

Question: AVI question

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question but here it goes.
I have burned a DVD with convertxtodvd using AVI files that contained Xvid compressed DV info. What I discovered using the converxtodvd is that when I put the AVI in the list, the program gives a lower "weight" number. I actually thought the number would increase but it decreased instead.
The original space the AVIs took was 4,94GB but after conversion it only took 4,19GB. A rather big decrease. I had full quality settings so thats no issue.
Why this decrease? When the program converts, it strips the info from the AVI? It's the container that weights?

Answer:AVI question

I'm assuming you mean from 4.94 GB down to 4.19GB - this would come about because the capacity of standard DVD's is only 4.7GB and the software is compressing the avi files to fit this capacity.

Question: DFS Question

Hello.. sorry if I put this in the wrong forum. Not sure exactly which one this topic fits.

I am having some difficulty with some DFS management. I am attempting to migrate some folders that are on an old DFS 2008 server to a 2012 R2 server. I may have been doing it totally wrong.

I have created the File Server, installed the DFS Role, and proceeded to add the server to the existing namespace. The folders show up from the older namespace server in the DFS management page on the new server.

I replicated the data from the old server to the new server using DFSR. When I tried to add the new location as a target for the existing Folder, it stated that it couldn't because the folder wasn't empty. It then deleted the Folder link entirely from even the old server!

What do I do now? The folders are still able to be accessed at the moment through the existing namespace. But no folders show up in the management GUI under the namespace. I am having nightmares with thinking that as soon as users reboot their machines, that the folders will all of a sudden become inaccessible. Is there a way to restore the link to the existing folder on the old server so the folder shows back up in the DFS Management GUI?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

I would like to ask about this one:

"Animate Windows when minimizing and maximizing" - I always left this uncheck.
I don't know whats happening but it keeps on returning to be checked.

I do not need any animations with my OS so that it runs faster.

Sir chaslang redirected me here to ask.

Thanks for the reply.

Answer:Question and a Little Help.

On older computers - and even on my main one, because old habits die hard I usually do the following....

Set to best performance first - which removes all the checks

Then I re-tick the bottom two, so I keep the pretty blue taskbar and the icons on screen don't have a background.

It will have automatically jumped to custom settings by then and I've never known any come back after doing that, so maybe that's worth a try

Question: AMD CPU Question

I have an old AMD Athlon 64x2 5600+

I was wondering if there is any type of driver for this CPU?

I'm using Windows 7 64 Bit Ultimate, but I remember on Windows XP there was this thing I needed called (dual core optimizer) I think with Vista/7 they got rid of the need for that but was wondering if there was anything else, I've been missing for years.

You don't need anything for Windows 7. The dual core optimizer you're speaking of was the download AMD put out to help with gaming performance in WinXP for applications that bypassed the Windows API for timing. It's not needed (nor is anything else) for anything newer than XP.

yes... i know .bat lame

but I'm simply attempting to write a batch file to auto-ping 3 servers, i have that part down but.... well the issue is hard to describe, let me post the code and ill work from there

@echo off
set [[/a [y]] [/p [variable=1]]string]
set [[/a [n]] [/p [variable=2]]string]
Title Ping
REM "this batch was created for fun and to make it easyer to ping 3 servers whilst doing the morning checklist... have fun!

echo Pinging tackleberry, typewriter and printers.

ping -n 5 tackleberry

ping -n 5 typewriter

ping -n 5 printers
echo Did all ping successfully? y/n
set {y|n}

Ok, i know the code sux but thats a different story

Question: GPO Question

How do you assign a GPO containing user configuration only to an OU containing computers. I have a GPO that locks down IE properties and limits the screen saver lockout to a short duration (all of which are User configuration settings, but I want this GPO to link to specific group of computers (in their own OU). As it stands now, the policy is linked to that OU, but it doesnt work, presumaby because there are no users in the OU to apply the user settings to, but I don't want the policy to follow a user, I want it to apply to any user on a specific PC.

I have a feeling this is one of those slap-the-forehead issues right out of GPO 101 but I'll take the embarrassment is I can find the answer...

Any suggestions?

Question: USB Question

I just bought an HP scanjet 3970, and when I plugged in the USB cable, it said that I was trying to connect a high speed USB devise to a slow speed USB connection or something like that.
It said my PC needed something.
But it seemes to be working fine.
I also just installed a Photosmart printer 7350 from HP and it didn't say that. I'm afraid to unplug (usb plug) the scanner because it is working now, to see if it say's it again.
Any ideas?

I have an HP pavilion 6630, 500 mhz, 256 ram. running win XP.

Answer:USB Question

All that it was telling you is that the ScanJet is a USB2.0 device. Since you have an older machine you are working under the USB1.1 protocol. You won't get the top speed that you scanner is capable of. If you want to, you can go out and buy a card that will give you the 2.0 capability. If you can live with the slower speed, save your $$$

Question: GPU Question?

My computer's current GPU is integrated into the motherboard. If I buy GPU to put in my PCI-E slot will I have to disable the other one or do I just need to hook the monitor up to the new GPU?

I tried to search for an update for the driver but did not find anything.

I tried to play Second Life and it said my current graphics card will not support the game.

Answer:GPU Question?

By default, your GPU will overwrite your onboard. I have a M-ATX board that has onboard GPU, too. I never used it.

Question: hello and question

i am a long time lurker, first time poster. i am a total novice when it comes to computers. i need your help with something that is bugging the crud out of me. hopefully i'll describe it accurately.

the pesky problem is this. my internet explorer 7 will not access the internet after some time goes by (say anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours) without me using the computer. i am using a t & t dsl to access the internet. i usually end up rebooting my computer about 2 to 3 times a day just to 'reset' the internet. to be clear- i can click on the internet explorer tab and the explorer comes up, but never 'engages' any internet sites.

anybody that may be able to assist me will have my gratitude.

an imaginary girl

Answer:hello and question

Hello and Welcome to MG's

There is a "AT&T Self Support Tool " It's a click/fix, will check your settings.
You can login to the ATT site and download it, since their available downloads go by email domain, I did not supply link to downloads just in case not compatible with your domain.

After you login, go to Downloads

Most likely it's a setting on your modem, network or firewall. See if the tool helps you, easier than checking all the settings.

hi,               the company that i used to work for upgraded their system so instead of them throwing the old pc's away, they gave it the employee's .... ok so to cut the long story short i mangae to get a think center m50(at least thats what i think it it is) ok so the pc has a very decent specs so hey i took it, reformat it and installed a fresh copy of window xp. then i figured shoot i dont have all the drivers for it e.g. mother board driver/audio/video driver/ ethernet driver/ dvd rom driver.... so now ive manage to download everything but the dvd rom driver and the mother board driver. i tried installing some MMORPG (games) on but it wouldnt let me play it. i think its because i dont have the mboard driver and im only using the onboard video adapter to play the games.  so basically what i need is for someone to tell me where can i get the dvd rom driver abd the mother board driver. co i might upgrade the memory and but a neat graphics card so i can play some games on it... any help will do... your reply would be very much appreciated thanks

Answer:i have an m50 question

Hey Madyicstick,Lucky you.You should be able to find what you're looking for with a product number.  The product number has seven characters (for example, 8431-KYA) and can be located somewhere on the cover.Enter the product no. for your M50 into the appropriate place on the 'Downloads and drivers' page.  This page can be reached by clicking on the following links:'User's guides and manuals' on the main Lenovo Canada page and then 'Downloads and drivers'.If the DVD-ROM was replaced before you got the machine, and it is not the same as the original optical drive supplied with the machine, you may need the make and model no. to have a look at the manufacturer's website for an appropriate driver.

Question: CPU question

Every now and then I actually leave my computer desk and become a productive member of society (that's up for debate though). During this time, instead of shutting my desktop off, I just turn off the monitor and speakers, and then I'm on my way. I don't let the computer sleep or hibernate. I've had too many problems with computers coming out of hibernation or sleep-mode, and then have to restart the computer anyway to correct them.

I was going to create a power plan that I can just switch to when I wanna leave for a little while, but I had a question in regards to the CPU itself. When doing my normal work and games, the CPU is not allowed to speedstep down to lower frequencies. But would it be alright to lower the maximum percentage of the processor speed down to,, let's say, 25% and a minimum of 5%?

My other question is "is it the reduced amount of voltage that brings the speed of the CPU down to only 25% of its maximum, or is it something else? And if it is voltage, would it be okay for the processor to be under-powered for hours if it isn't under any load at all?"

Answer:CPU question

Yes, the hertz (Gigaherz, etc.) corresponds to high and low voltage waves. Lots of info. on Wikipedia.

And if it is voltage, would it be okay for the processor to be under-powered for hours if it isn't under any load at all?"

You have an expensive system- you should power it down completely when not using it. There's always wear and tear on electronics. With budget PCs it doesn't matter so much.

Some of the more experienced members may disagree, and this response is partly a bump as I'm curious to see their take on this.

Question: UPS Question

My computer's plugged into an Uninterruptible Power Supply. Each night, after shutting the computer off, I power off the UPS and then unplug the computer from it (in case of a midnight lightning strike), and when I want to use the computer again, I plug it back into the UPS and power on the UPS again (in that order). After seeing this thread, I'm worried this may not be a good idea. Could the same thing that happened with that user also happen if I'm using a UPS instead of just a power strip?

Answer:UPS Question

Why have UPS and unplug it every night? They are Uninterruptible for a reason. From my experience all of them have a strong anti-surge in them. I am not saying that the safest way to protect your computer is by leaving it plugged in. It will be pretty hard for a surge to hit the computer if it is completely unplugged. What happened in the other thread you mentioned is that the person bumped the power off and then back on quickly. This can and may have caused a surge to his components. The method it sounds like you are using should not cause this. You are turning everything off and letting it sit then reconnecting and powering on.

It is still possible to fry your components, but no more than just turning it on/off by shutting it down and hitting the power button.

Question: DVR HDD question

I actually have 2 questions. The first question is actually for my dad that likes to fix everything possible. This is all I know as of now...

He has a receiver, that he owns, for his DISH Network. This receiver (VIP 612) has DVR functions and the HDD went bad in it. I don't know of the maker of this receiver, he says that all it shows on it is the VIP 612. So he bought another receiver but he wants to know what kind of HDD he has to purchase to fix this VIP 612 receiver? He had asked me if it took a regular HDD. I told him yes but it is formatted different than a PC HDD. I think I'm correct there but I'm not positive. So can he purchase another HDD for this receiver? What kind will he have to look for?

OK, 2nd question is from me. Can you take a HDD out of a DVR receiver and format it for use in your PC? I tried this about a year ago and gave up. If you can format them for PC use... how do you do it? I can't remember why mine wouldn't format... it's been a while ago. Anyways, it's a Seagate 80GB and it looks identical to the HDD that I had go bad years ago... also a Seagate 80GB.

Anybody wish to help me out with these questions?

Answer:DVR HDD question

Take the hard drive out from the dvr and hook it up to your desktop.
Use defraggler to find out some information about the hard drive.
Click the health tab and it should be able to tell you what brand it is what format it has and disk health.
Use that same format it has for the newer hard drive when it comes.

You can try a seagate if you want to, but make sure the model your getting is reliable and will work with the receiver itself.
You may not like this idea, but call dish network technical support and see what they recommend first hand.
Lastly check the connectors on the hard drive itself and cables on the hard drive.
You never know when a cable might go bad and it may not be the hard drives fault.

Had that happen once and awhile. :/

Welcome to MajorGeeks!

If you buy the XP OS from them you should be good to go. If you install one you got elsewhere, they will most likely not give you any software/OS support, but the hardware should still by covered by the warranty.

Give them a call to make sure before you install XP.

Question: New PC Question

Hey all. I ordered all my parts from new egg a few days ago (It'll be here Monday), and I was wondering what I should do once I get it. Download the latest drivers for all my hardware, etc etc, but is there anything I should do to break it in? Maybe leave it on overnight doing a CPU intensive task? Or is that a bad idea? I just want to know what to do to break it in and make sure everything is stable. Maybe there's a possible program for that?

Sorry for all the questions, Thanks

I'm new to Tech Support web page. I'm so lame I can barely get around this web site. I was told someone could help me get rid of those damn messenger pop-ups that appear these days (since XP) when I'm attempting to use E-mail and other functions.
They pop-down and have an 'OK' at the bottom and they're usually about some advertising web page I'm supposed to copy down and go to later. Is there any way to keep these jerks from entering my space? I'm ready to dump XP. I'd appreciate any help that works.

well ive noticed in my C: drive after i reinstalled xp i have 1.16GB out of 18.6GB ... ive checked to see if there hidden profiles and such but cannot find anything ... can anybody help me ... trying to fix this relic of a comp .

I'm not sure I understand... it shows that you have 1.16gb of free space? or that you've used up 1.16gb of space? If you did a clean install, meaning you formatted the drive, WinXP will take up just over 1gb after installing drivers.
