User accounts and internet explorer

Question: User accounts and internet explorer

I have receintly put user accounts on my pc.
I am the administrator, and I have to limmited accounts.

For some reason, the internet explorer works fine on my account, but on the limited, you double click, and nohing happends. Ctrl Alt Delete shows that Iexplorer has loaded up, but no window appears.

You can still however access the internet via normal windows explorer, and typing the site addy in the normal address bar.
I am unsure why this randomly started to happen. Any sugestions? Cheers

Preferred Solution: User accounts and internet explorer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I just installed dsl [broadband] on my computer and every thing is working fine on my user account. However, i went into my sisters account to configure ie in her account and have experienced problems.

The only setting i changed was in internet properties/connections and i changed to "never dial a connection", and made sure that it wasnt using a proxy server. Then when i opened internet explorer, the pages load however the buttons on most websites dont work. For example: if i go to google.com, and click "google Searc" or "Im feeling lucky" nothing happens, not even an error message. It looks like i am pressing it on the screen, but still nothing happens. If i type in URL's they load up fine but it is just these links or buttons that are causing problems.

It is a brand new computer so i doubt its a spyware proble.I have searched the computer for spyware and carried out the 'sfc /scannnow' command to see if any of windows files are corrupt, but to no avail. I have also tried the reset web settings which didnt fix the problem either. Its strange because internet explorer works fine on my user account.

Any idea's?

Answer:Internet explorer problem, with xp user accounts

Does her account have the same permissions as yours? I've had strange problems like that when trying to use 'limited' accounts for my kids.

Otherwise, it sounds like it could be a java issue. You could install Firefox & see if that works until you get the problem rectified. She probably won't want to go back!

Looking for a little help with computer. We have had our computer for several years (a Dell 8400 running Windows XP). We made a separate user account for each person in our home. Recently, we agreed to create another user account for my youngest child. The problem is Internet Explorer will not work. I click the program and it tries to open but just freezes. All the other user acoounts work just fine. The newest user account (our fifth) on this computer just does not allow internet explorer to work. We use Windows automatic update and have SP3...

Can someone please provide any guidance?

Thanks in advance...

Okay, now first ill go ahead and say that the problem im having right now ive tried to solve with dell and have called them too many times about issues with this computer. Now ive run into problems with Getting into User Accounts from the control panel and using system restore. Everytime i try to get into user accounts, it says User Accounts on the top of the box but the box itself is white. Furthermore, it then pops up with a bunch of dialogs saying an internet explorer script error has occured. Then, also recently, i was trying to get into system restore to create a restore point because i was about to make a slight modification to the registry..when i tried to get into it, it also popped up in jus a white box with nothing on it. This happens in both Normal Mode and Safe Mode. The only account that dosen't experience problems is my aunts account, whos the owner of the computer, an im not sure why that is. But anyway, do u have any idea of what i should try to do to fix this issue?(An my computer is a Dell XPS 400 with Windows XP Media Center 2005 Service Pack 2 installed)

Answer:Problems with User Accounts(Getting internet explorer script error messages)etc

You can try dial-a-fix. Its magical for this kind of problems. Dial-a-fix will put many of your registry entries to Windows default state. You need admin rights for it.

http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Read carefully first, then download and run it ONLY if you understand clearly what would it do and if you can take all the previous actions suggested.

Good luck!

Hi,

I just got a second hand computer from an auction, and have installed windows XP home edition and the service pack 2. my father accidentally included 4 user login profiles (the ones that appear when you first turn the computer on) instead of just the 1 for me, so I tried to delete the others. However, when i go to control panel and user accounts, i get a message saying "an error has occurred in the script on this page" and "do you want to continue running scripts on this page?" with a "Yes" and a "No" box underneath. no matter how many times i click on either the yes or no boxes, the message won't go away, and so i cant access my user accounts, and the only way to get rid of the box is to log out or shut down.

Can you please help me get rid of this???

Many thanks,
Michael

I set up an additional User Account using Windows XP for my daughter. I wanted to be able to let her change background, screen savers and other things kids think is "cool" but drives me insane. That all works well accept I have had 2 web sites that I could not access under her user account. Both of the websites require a username and password but when entered either nothing happens or the web site returns an error. When I switch to my user account both pages open fine. I have just installed Norten but I have added those pages to the exception sites and no difference.

Any ideas ?

Thanks
Keith

Are you using Internet Explorer?
Did You Somehow Enable Content Advisor?

Go To Tools>Internet Options>Content. There you will see the content advisor settings. Verify that it is off, and try browsing to those sites again.

I have a small problem with user accounts. Myself, my wife and my son are all set up as Computer Administrators. However in Windows Explorer I can only see my docs and my sons docs but not my wife's, she can see her docs and my son's docs but not mine. As neither of us have a problem with sharing documents and often are sat together at the computer it is annoying not to be able to open up say an XL file or a Word doc held on the others profile. We then have to fiddle about switching users. Is there an easy fix so we can both see each others docs on our computer?

Hi

I rent my laptop out for wireless cctv use. I have set up two user accounts,my own(administrator) and another which I call video. My account is protected via a password so the renters can only use video. When they open the video account I dont want them having internet access but cant seem to delete explorer without deleting it from the whole computer. Basically, I want to have net access when logged in as administrator but dont want anyone else having net access when the laptop is out on rental. Can i password protect explorer? Or delete it from a specific user account?

I have windows XP on a 05 HP Presario. I'm also a mac user most of the time hence the complete lack of any PC knowledge. Thanks in advance.

Problem with user accounts:no taskbar, no explorer.exe (it isn't running), no desktop icons

Hi I'm having trouble when I load my side of the computer and the only way I can access programs is through Windows Task Manager. All that will load is the desktop background picture. I have looked up various solutions - it seems the explorer.exe process is missing or unable to be located when I try to run it. I have ran an AVG scan and two infection were found and supposedly healed. These were C:\Programfiles\MicrosoftCommon\wuauclt.exe (Win32\Heur)and C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntos (trojanhorsePakes_c.RZ). Have not yet ran any other scans and really need futher advice on what to do next! I have Spybot and Adaware but have not yet ran a scan since before the computer started playing up. I've also had to manually open Zonealarm so that I have a functioning firewall :/

I've only had this problem once before - I think it was yesterday and I panicked and just turned off the computer at the switch. Restarted, everything was fine and the toolbar &desktop was there. Today it was working fine until I turned it on about 2 hours ago

HI,

I have a Dell 4600 Dinension (2.4GHz/512MB/WinXP Pro 5.1.2600 with SP1 system. The IE version is 6.0.2800.1106 with 128 bit strength.

I read the required "Before you post..." sticky. I did extensive search at this website, but could not find a solution, hence this new thread.

I use CableOne as my ISP for cable broadband (3Mbps). I have four user accounts, all with Administrator access privileges. We all used to be able to connect to internet till a few days ago, Now only I can access internet from my user account, but my family can't access internet from their accounts. The page erros out saying "This Page Can't be Displayed".

I created a new user account from my use account and tried to access internet from there, but I got the same error. I did not want to delete the other three user accounts before verifying if I created a new one, it wouldn't have the same error (and it did as I said).

I checked the Internet Options on all four use accounts, and they are identical. Can you please tell me how I can fix this problem short of re-installing Windows XP? I have a feeling registry may have gotten corrupted for the other three accounts. I run Ad-aware, Spybot S&D and Spysweeper and keep my system up to date with virus and spyware definitions.

Many thanks in anticipation of your help, friends.

Do you have the new Ad-Aware SE? That can do a search for ADS plus the old Ad-Aware isn't getting any new updates (I don't think)

I have three user accounts on my home computer running on XP, my wives, my nieces, and mine. Well last week, my computer got seriously infected with a horrible piece of spyware put out by Ezula, which took me forever to get rid of (and I'm not sure its completely gone). In the process, I was in all sorts of areas of the computer, including my Zone Alarm blocked sites, and the Windows Registry. Well after I did that, which was within my wives user account on XP, my niece and I can no longer access the internet via our user accounts, but my wife can. Any suggestions? I have a cable internet connection, and I have searched within all the routine XP/IE internet setup areas for connectivity, and they are all the same on each user account. One last thing, while attempting to do the fix within my wives account, I shut off the "Windows Restore.," so not sure if that could effect it.

I have created a new user account for my wife and son and copied over my favourites and this looks ok. However when I launch the explorer it asks me to dial up etc. I am running windows XP and I am with ntl on their fast broadband connection. Also can they have their own ntl e-mail address. How do I get this ? ntl sent me mine when I installed broadband.

Answer:XP - new user accounts, setting up internet & mail

To add more email addresses go to ntl homepage click here On the right hand side under your account select email options and follow instructions you can have up to 15 (maybe more now)email addresses.you will then need to set up outlook express or whatever you use these new addresses.I don't use XP but i think it should be set to never dial a connection when using NTL Broadband.

I have adsl.

I have checked all the settings, they are identical to my own account, and checked the ms site problem solving notes on the error number, all ok there too.

What have I missed? Or what am I doing wrong?
Thanks
Ps weird thing is I also reformatted my other pc at the same time and that has no problem what so ever!

First, let me say that I know I must be overlooking something extremely obvious, but I just can't find it. So, here I am again. Thanks in advance to all who help.
Toshiba laptop running Windows XP version 5.1, service pack 3. Has both an ethernet high speed connection, and a wireless router connection. Both are used, depending on whether the computer is at home or on the road. It's my parent's computer and they set it up with two user accounts, one for each of them, with their own personal settings, files, etc. Here is the problem: they can only go online under her user account. When in his user account, there is no connection to the internet. I've spent hours looking at both accounts and the settings in both to see what could be different and I can't find anything. The connection shows up and says "connected", but nothing web related works: Internet Explorer, Mail, etc. It's obviously not a hardware problem, or internet problem, because as soon as I switch users to her acct, the internet works perfectly. It's something in his User Account settings, but What am I missing? I know the easiest thing to do would be just delete his acct and use hers, but he has a ton of favorites marked for his business and also files, etc. that he doesn't want to lose or have to move. I look forward to hearing from you, and thanks again.

We recently switched from Centennial aircard to Verizon aircard (USB760) for our laptop. We have two user accounts on our windows 7 pc. With Centennial we could switch between user accounts without closing sierra wireless manager but when I switch to another user now, a message comes up saying vzaccess manager running in another account and we cannot use the internet until we have shut it down in the account it is running in - which is a pain. I have tried right clicking vzaccess manager in all programs and it does not have a share option. I also went to properties under vzaccess manager and found a setting to share and set it up but it still will not share. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Can't share internet connection between user accounts

Internet connection sharing is typically something that's done between computers/devices, not users. It 'should' be that any available internet connection is always available to any user who logs onto the computer. However, since your network connection is being managed by the vzaccess manager, it's something of a different story entirely.

I would recommend contacting Verizon Technical Support and asking them to step you through the process of configuring your system to connect without using the vzaccess manager. Once they've done that, uninstall that program and all should be well.

Hi all

Back in April I posted about a problem I was having with Vista. I still am. 183 people read my post but there were no replies.

In a nutshell, I have a Windows Home Basic (new) Compaq desktop, an Apple Airport Extreme (WPA2 Personal) and a Linksys modem. The last 2 of these provide me a DSL internet connection on my MacBook and Nokia N95. So here's the problem...

I have 5 accounts on the Vista machine: 4 users and one unlocked 'Administrator'. When I boot up, all of the user accounts are able to connect to the Airport network and see the internet. If I log on as the administrator the PC will usually connect to the network (and apparently to the internet, judging by the little globe sign in my system tray by the 2 screens), but disconnects from the network almost instantly. It cannot be connected again thereafter, and if I log out of Administrator and back in as any of the users they cannot access the network either. Reboot required.

Having an Administrator account that can't see the internet is a major hassle, if not a risk in terms of updates.

I can't believe I'm the only person with this issue. Help!

Thanks

I have XP Professional SP2 and Norton Internet Security 2004 running. It all works fine in my XP administrator's account. But I can't get the Norton Antivirus element of NIS to run if I start the PC up and log directly into an XP limited account. If I first start it in an administrators account and then switch to the limited account, its OK, although there are still no Norton icons in the system tray (but XP Security Centre says NIS is running). I have tried re-installing NIS to no avail. Can anyone help?

I just finished setting up my grandchildren's computer and tried to set one Administrator's account and 3 limited accounts for them to use in order to stop them downloading so much. My problem came when I set it up at their house and learned that using their dial-up Netzero account, they couldn't get online. I could only connect through the Administrator's account. I have always read that one should never use the Administrator's account all the time for safety's sake, so I am assuming I did something wrong. Right now I have all of them set to Administrator again so they can all get online through their own user accounts.

Is there a way to change things so they can get online with limited accounts?

Thanks
Peg

I'm very frustrated with Windows 7!

I have been using a Sprint mobile broadband USB data modem for over a year now.

I had a home network of 3 client PCs connected to a router via Ethernet cables.

I had the modem plugged into my computer. (XP Pro) The other PCs running XP home.

I had multiple users accounts on my computer. 1. Admin, 2. Mine (I use to keep from having admin security issues) and others for my children.

As long as my computer was turned on (no user had to be logged in), all the other network computers could access internet.

Everything was great until I bought a new system for myself this spring.

It is not a brand name computer. (None of my computers are) I had it put together at a computer shop.

Reluctantly I let the tech talk me into purchasing Windows 7 Pro instead of XP Pro. I went with the 32-bit for compatibility with my older programs.

I was able to set up (with some minor frustration) a new home group network using the same setup as I had before.

I managed to get all 4 networked computers connected to the internet as long as my new computer (with the modem) is turned on, logged in to my user, and connected. (Not the admin)

Everything was great until I bought a new system for myself this spring.

Hello. A friends' laptop became infected with Internet Security 2010. I followed directions according to this tutorial:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo...t-security-2010The malware seemed to have been removed. But a day after I returned the laptop to my friend, he that his User Account seemed to work fine, but that his wife's User Account was still showing signs of infection. So I re-scanned using his wife's User Account, and sure enough, there were signs of lingering infection. I then followed the same steps from the page linked above for the wife's User Account and now all seems fine.My question- do viruses/Malware usually have to be removed from ALL User Accounts? I had assumed that running anti-malware fixes did not depend on which User Accounts were being used at the time.Any enlightenment into this matter would be greatly appreciated.

A friend of mine is a mother of two and the kids been bad on the internet, so shes taking away surfing rights from them.

Is there a way to do that besides purchasing some guardian software? It doesn't really matter how it's done, as long as the kids cannot get online. The computer is the only one in the house hold, straight to the DSL modem.

Hiii everybody,
this is my first ever post in my first forum . That's a disclaimer to ask you guys to forgive me for having very little gray matter :-( .
I have Windows XP HOME SP2 on Intel Celeron 667 MHz and 192MB RAM. I know it doesn't sound like much so I'm always trying to read forums and tweak my settings. But this time, it ended up worse.
I used a program called autoruns.exe to adjust my startup programs so it'll start faster. I'm not sure what I turned off but now
1. It takes longer to start up,
2. I don't see any accounts (not even admin) in Control Panel - User accounts
3. I can access a directory and open files but I can't cut or copy and paste them into another folder.
4. In services.msc, most of the programs under Local with automatic setting don't start and cannot be started. I can't even see the programs under extended.
5. I have a home network but I can't access any of my other computers.
those are a few of laundry list of challenges with my computer (with me ?)
I'm even ready to format and reinstall XP but I need to copy some files before I do that.
I'm sorry for this long post but can you guys help me?

Hi

I'm surprised that nobody else has this problem, but I've searched and can't find an answer...apologies if I've not looked hard enough but I decided to post a question because this is 'urgent' to me.

I had 2 children's accounts in Win 8, and had local Parental Controls. Upgraded OS to Win 10, and now I can't manage Parental Controls in Win 10 locally, so I 'think' I need to set up 'online Profiles' for them.

However, all their game progress, profile settings, etc are on their local profiles - how can I get all this data to be on their online Profiles? I didn't want to copy and paste folders (such as AppData) without knowing that this was a 'safe' way to do this.

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

I was recently looking on techguy for a similar resolution to the below question in the forum.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista-7/822354-ccleaner-not-working-when-i.html

I do not have problems using the CC Cleaner in my account (admin) but when I run the cleaner it does not clean Chrome. See, my girl use chrome for her internet browser on her user account and I use Firefox in my admin user account.

IN fact i have this problem in a lot with programs like Tversity, CCleaner and AVG.

Do I have install the program on every User account (hence taking up room on my PC because I am installing the same program twice)?

And when I use virus programs do they sift for infections through all the users etc?

Thanks kindly.

Now, while I'm not pointing the finger directly at Windows Internet Explorer 9 which I recently upgraded to from IE8, I do wonder at the coincidence that since doing the upgrade to Windows IE9, everything 'Windows' related seems to be taking forever to load into my laptop.

These include three Mail accounts in Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail [Hotmail], and the latest version of Internet Explorer.

A summary of the browser and mail account details follows, with the loading times highlighted in bold type;
Windows Mail [ 1 account ] - Version 6.0.6000.16586 (Vista_rtm.061101-2205)....takes 70 seconds, plus or minus 5 seconds to load and complete the update functions.

Windows Live Mail 2011 [ 2 accounts - and I'm not talking about going online here.....these are accessed from an Icon in my Task Tray ] - Version 2011 - Build 15.4.3508.1109....takes 90 seconds, plus or minus 10 seconds to load and complete thr update functions.

Windows Internet Explorer 9 - Version 9.0.8112.16421 (Update Version RTM KB982861)....takes 70 seconds, plus or minus 5 seconds to load, but then either freezes for a further 15 to 20 seconds, or indicates that the page needs reloading.
This is all very frustrating, and I'm left wondering if others are experiencing similar problems with the same sort of issues and similar outcomes. I also wonder if there could be some other underlying issues or set-up problems, which may cause the problems with loading that I am experiencing with things Windows.

Hi all

I can't find any mention of my problem on this or any other forum. Or at least I don't think I can... Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Here is my set-up:
Linksys DSL modem, connected to an Apple Airport Extreme wireless router. The modem is configured to be the DHCP server, the Airport is set to bridge mode. I have a new Compaq Presario desktop running Vista Home Basic with a Belkin wireless-G USB dongle. All of this discussion is about wireless, btw - I don't have a long enough CAT-5 cable to connect the Airport and PC.

I have 5 users set up on the PC - 1 true, unlocked administrator account and 4 standard users. When I boot up and connect as any of the 4 standard users they automatically detect and connect to the Airport, and receive IP addresses.

But when I change user to be the administrator the connection drops after a few seconds. The Airport network is visible to Vista, because it is in the list of available networks. But if I try to connect to it it fails, and the Vista diagnostic tool tells me it has been unable to connect 'for unknown reason'. One of the standard users used to have admin rights, and that account had exactly the same problem. If I log in from a boot-up as the administrator I also cannot connect to the network.

If the administrator account has been used and logged out the other users cannot connect to the Airport. I have to re-boot before they can connect again.

I also have a MacBook and a Nokia N95, bo... Read more

Hello

I have been chasing up an answer to this problem for a couple of weeks now and have found a number of people with same symptoms but no answer which works.

When I go to the User Accouns page the dialog box for the "Choose the Account you would like to change" is blank.

I am an administrator and there are 2 accounts on my notebook - windows 7 professional.

I can view the accounts through the run command, but would like to know why the dialog is empty and what the fix is for this.

I have done a scan for errors - none found.

Done a complete reinstall - Accounts still not visible.

Looking on a variety of forums, this appears to have been happening to XP and Vista prior to Windows 7.

However none of the fixes for XP or Vista work (Some don't even apply).

Does anyone have a solution for this bug?

Thanks

Answer:User Accounts / Manage Accounts Blank

Microsoft has an article on this issue, please read this and try the solutions if you haven't already. Oh yeah, welcome to SevenForums.

Granted... It's for XP but I can't seem to find the Win7 version.

Several dialog boxes are blank

EDIT: Here's a fix for the "Windows Features" blank dialog. I figure it might tell you what your problem is as well.

Hi all,

Hoping someone might be able to help. Recently, a few strange things have happened with the PC, which first started when I found I couldn't use the Backup & Recovery software in Windows 7. Whenever I clicked on one of the buttons with a shield, nothing would happen at all. I've looked around and just can't find the solution to this. However, today when trying to fix this, I've come across a new user account in the permissions section. The name is jvactaett - I certainly haven't made this! Does anyone have any ideas how this account has got there, and how I can remove it? It doesn't show in user accounts through Control Panel.

I've put a screenshot as well. To get there, I right clicked a hard drive and went to properties, Security, Add, advanced and then clicked Find Now.

I don't know if the two things above are linked or not...
Thanks!

Our genealogy club has a room with a few PCs that members may use to access online databases the club pays for. With Windows 7, members use a flash drive for data transfer between their home PC and a club PC.

If a member had a Microsoft account and could log in to a club PC with that account, OneDrive could be used instead of the (old-fashioned, clunky) flash drive.

But from what I can tell, the Windows 10 club PC would have to have an account already set up, that was connected to the Microsoft account. We'd have to define an account on each PC for each member who wanted to use OneDrive. That doesn't sound like a good idea after all.

Is there any way to use different Microsoft accounts from the same PC user account?

Answer:User accounts and Microsoft accounts

tarascon said:

Yep. Settings, then Accounts, then click on Sign in with a local account instead. That will remove the existing MS login and convert the account to use a local login. Then new person logs in on the local PC account, then goes to Settings, then Accounts, then clicks on something like Sign in a with a Microsoft account instead and converts the local account back to Microsoft login. Then before they sign out, they go back and convert it back to a local account.

You only asked if there was a way - not a practical way.

They can always just use the OneDrive website from Firefox or Edge or Internet Explorer to log into their personal OneDrive cloud. Personally, if it were me, I would rather just use a flash drive.

I am using Vista Home Premium 32-bit and I am having problem logging in using my user account. An error flagged "The User Profile Service service failed the logon. User Account/Profile cannot be loaded."

The Event Viewer window has these details:

I was able to logged in through Safe Mode but still an error flagged in status bar that the profile was not properly loaded.

Although I was able to copy all data from that user account to a new account, can I still troubleshoot the problem and be able to log in using the old user account? I have all my shortcuts and archives there and "every customized thing".

The thing is, though, that it showed two accounts, let's call them Sam and Sam Jones. I would like to delete the Sam account, but I can't find it anywhere except on the startup screen and under netplwiz (and that takes a little trickery). It doesn't show under User Accounts or after switching users or logging off. For the moment, I've bypassed the password login on both. My question is, how do I find and get rid of the Sam account? Thanks,

I am a lab technician for Microsoft classes at a community college. One of our students somehow messed up his hard drive. The computer is running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64-bit. The system has two administrator accounts and one standard user account. I am still able to logon with those accounts and there are SID keys for each of these users in the registry.

Now when we create a new user, the account is created without any problems. The user shows up on the logon page and after running the net user command, it shows up there as well. When I try to logon with the new user, I get a message: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

None of the new user accounts show up in the registry. The other anomaly that I see is that the Default User folder is missing in each of the Users subdirectory for the three accounts where I have no problems.

I have read the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 947215 and none of the methods apply to my problem. I also checked Local Group Policies and the Do not logon users with temporary profiles setting is not configured. I would appreciate any thoughts that anyone has this problem.

Hi there,

I installed the Windows 8 CP and configured my installation with an initial LIVE ID ([email protected]) user (user-A).
Later, I added a second user to the system, which was also a LIVE ID user (user-B).

When I login as user-B, the Internet Explorer Metro app is not available within the tiles. I've expanded the search through the tiles library and it's still not available. In it's place, is the standard Internet Explorer, the tile looks like the Windows Explorer tile, just with the standard IE icon.

User-B was automatically added to the system as a Standard User. I changed it to an Administrator via user-A, but user-B can still not access the Internet Explorer Metro app.

Anyone else experienced this problem?

Answer:Internet Explorer Metro App Not Available for Second User

For Metro IE to be available, it has to be set as the default browser. So, it's worth checking the status. To do this:

1. At the Metro start page start typing control panel
2. Open Control Panel and select Default Programs
3. Select - Set your Default Programs
4. Select - Internet Explorer
5. Select - Set this program as default
6. Check the status on the Start page.

My wife and I each have a log in account on Win XP Home Edition SP2. Mine works fine, but when she logs in and loads IE6, my Favorites come up on her browser. Her Favorites are still in her Favorites folder under her name in Documents and Settings. If she tries to save anything from IE, it also tries to save it to my folders instead of hers. I've never seen this before and can't find any option to change that would cause this. Please help. And thank you.

Hi, That is strange...what about if you create a new user account for her an see if it does the same? When you have some Favorites saved (by the way, don't import them from your list...have her start a new bunch) see if they remain hers after you log in and then try her profile again.

Now i have AVG and i scaned with it, and it deleted 6 files indicated as "exploit" or something allong with this jpg.All the files were in temp.internet files if i recall.

I have found the source of this, it seems that the Official Elder scrolls forums have a virus right now, and the moderators are trying to fix it.

What i am concerned now is IF my AVG cleaned all the infected files,(altho they all gathered in internet temp folder) but i am really worried.

I'm trying to set-up a PC for a friend with multiple user accounts. This isn't something I've done before. I've set up a series of Limited User accounts for her children, but have come across a couple of problemsI wanted to set up a custom Default User account and followed the instructions given in Microsoft Knowledgebase article 319974 click here;en-us;319974This presented a problem since new user accounts, which adopt the new Default User profile, inherit the location of the copied account?s My Documents and Outlook profile, but don?t have permission to access them. This means that new users can?t use Outlook. The second problem was with Norton AntiSpam, which adds a plug-in to Outlook. However, when a user opens Outlook for the first time, after a different user has been logged in previously, they are given the following error message:Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime LibraryRuntime Error!Program: ...\OUTLOOK.EXEabnormal program terminationThe only Solution I have found has been to disable the plug-in and switch off AntiSpam. Symantec haven?t been able to suggest anything else and this seems like it a common problem. Can anyone suggest any solutions to either of these?

I am trying to understand the differences here on things going on here. Still trying to figure out why I had got locked out of my own computer right before Christmas. So, I think by trying to fix other things going wrong, like having problems with accounts on websites I use not working right, that I accidently did something to lock myself out of computer. See if I right click on the My Computer icon and then left click on PropertiesIt will say This computer is registered to AmyRThen has all the other information on the computer. Then if I click on the Advanced tab, and then under User Profiles section and then the Settings button it brings up a list that has 3 things listed under the Name column-Account UnknownDell\AdministratorDell\AmyR Then it has a size for all of them- the 1st 2 have 35.4MB and the last one has 981MBThen 2 other columns Type and Status and all say Local and then a Modified column and the 1st one says 5/22/09 the last 2 say 5/24/09The other thing is that AmyR is names I use on some sites I go to for my username. Giving this another try in a different way - not getting further response to my big restore problem. If you want to see original post it is here : http://forums.majorgeeks.com/index....backup-to-reformatted-hd.297121/#post-1942805
After a number of failed attempts to completely restore my backup to a new hard drive, I have wound up with a bit of a mess. On the last try, I found that the computer had finally processed the complete restore but the organization was wildly different from original computer setup. I now have the following user accounts:
Default, Lura, Lura H, LuraAnne & Public. I presume it is normal to have Default and Public but the only user account I purposely set up was LuraAnne and it covers the full backup while Lura and Lura H cover only portions. Lura H was set up as the administrator on one of the restore attempts. I want my original LuraAnne as the only user and as administrator. Can I merge the other 2 Luras or just delete them? I thought that if I can merge them I will avoid the possibility of losing something I need. When I go into Control panel it only shows Lura H and Guest - the others don't show up at all which makes me nervous about deleting Lura H.
Your help would be greatly appreciated. This is the first time I have ever had to do a restore and you may be able to tell it is by the seat of my pants. Do not want to make any more disastrous choices...

Answer:Is It Possible To Merge Multiple User Accounts Into One User?

Hi

Merge sadly no easy way to do this and looks as if you have a little bit of a mess there is the recovery of your backups, could have been due to if I read your other post correctly in having split backups, likely with differing names.

Just to recap what Windows version are you using now, is it Windows 10?

I presume it is normal to have Default and PublicClick to expand...

Yes perfectly normal.

If by merge you want to copy the contents of the C: Users and the contents of the account names content like Lura and Lura H then yes you can do that and any duplicate files will be highlighted for skip or overwrite to your LuraAnne account (do copy the folders as they are eg. Pictures, Music etc), then delete the old accounts from Control Panel > Accounts > Family and other users.

But make a complete backup of your harddrive in one complete image backup file as never know what goes wrong with moving/deleting and copying into account files.

Hi
I don't use I.E at all (only Firefox) yet when I use CCleaner it finds loads of temporary internet files, index.dat files etc. relating to I.E

How is this possible? As I say I never use that browser so where are the files coming from? Are they to do with updates from Microsoft?

Answer:Firefox user with query re Internet Explorer

Yes, and a lot of software also load stuff into IE(number), it happens to me as well, game launcher for once love to load stuff into IE(number), if your concerned about what the heck is going on, just check the files and see what is loaded there, I hope we'll be able to uninstall IE(number) on Windows 8 from the system for good (you can't on Windows 7, it is still there in some form...) just my 3 cents

OK. I use Internet Explorer version 5.5 (have a cable modem) and about 3 times out of 10, when I start to type in the address bar or in something like a search bar, I get a pop up error that says:

Iexplore has caused an error in USER.EXE.
Iexplore will now close.

If you continue to experience problems,
try restarting your computer.
So then I have no choice but to click "Close" and re-open IE. This has been happening for the past 3 or 4 days. Anyone know what I should do?

Thanks in advance for your help

I recently changed my C:\Users folder to F:\Users. I used robocopy (not mirror image though as I already had some things in those folders), then mklink C:\Users F:\Users /j to make a junction. I had many problems until I changed the ownership of my user folder.

I cannot get Internet Explorer to run. I can not figure out how to uninstall it (I can turn it off). When it is turned off I can not get an install program to work as it says I have a newer one already. Another user (not an administrator) can use internet explorer.

Before I claimed ownership of my user folder and after the move, I could not open firefox or thunderbird except as an Administrator (another account, not administrator, was able to use them fine). I also had problems with rename master, but can use it as an administrator (still necessary after taking ownership). Before I took ownership I was having problems with the Normal.dot document template in Word, but that is fixed.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I added a new user to my Windows 7 32-bit Netbook and found that most web pages would not load for the new user. Whenever I clicked on a link or typed a new URL, IE9 would stop responding but worked fine for existing users.

When launching IE9 with no add-ons, IE9 worked correctly for the new user. This put me on the right track to identify the problem.

I had the latest version of Adobe Flash installed; however, I went to the control panel and uninstalled Flash. I then went to the Adobe website and downloaded and reinstalled flash. Now IE9 is working for all users.

I hope this helps someone else.

Hello - is there a way to disable or otherwise block a specific user on my computer from accessing the internet? The only browser on there is IE8 and this user will not have the ability to download other browsers. The reason why I want to do this is not important - it just needs to be done. Use of other apps on the computer are fine - just don't want them to use my computer to get to the internet.

I have been thinking of using Local Policy settings but can't find how to do it with that. Maybe there is a way to block all http traffic. Open to whatever ideas there are.

thanks

Hi, I'm having a problem with internet explorer.

I have a User account control popup which says, "Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?"
The details of it are
Programe location, syswow64/cmd.exe
system32/regsrv32.exe
internetexplorer/iexplorer.exe

If I click either yes or no, it pops up within a few seconds again. Internet pages load most of the time but sometimes crash but it doesn't really matter as the pop up just keeps comng back every few seconds. If I turn the PC off and on again sometimes it happens sometimes it doesn't. Have reinstalled both IE8 and IE9. Run Malware bites and the computer is now clean, I have to use IE9 due to a packaging plugin I use.

I really am at a bit of a loss and thanks to anyone who can help!

Answer:winxp-internet explorer-which user account do u want to run this program

Right click on the IE shortcut and choose Properties. There should be a tab marked Shortcut, click on it and then click on the Advanced button lower down. There will be a box checked: Run with Different Credentials. Just uncheck it and click OK.

If those steps do not apply to you, try deleting the shortcut then go to Start > All Programs. Internet Explorer should be in the list of programs, just right click on it and choose Send To > Desktop. This will make a new shortcut and hopefully that one will work without that message.

This question concerns internet explorer 7 .
I deal with an hotel booking website ( Booking.com ).

Up to about a week ago the site behaved perfectly without any problems.
Thereafter it would not operate properly and has become totally unreliable.
I contacted Booking.com who tested our account and found nothing wrong.

My computer has multiple user accounts.

On using the above website with another user account the website worked
perfectly without any problems .

This infers that my account is corrupt in some way - however eveything else
works fine including other websites as well as yours.

I am at a loss as to what the problem is and would welcome any suggestions.

Hello all -- I was reading an article about managing passwords in XP and followed its' instructions.
I went to Start/Run and entered "control userpasswords" at that time the 3 accounts that I have put
on the computer showed, along with another that I did not knowingly authourize or even know about.
The suspicious account is a limited account -- password protected and has the title "ASP.NET Machine A..."
(thats exactly what it says). asp.net seems to be a microsoft sponsored site -- I guess.
My concern is that I have recently had and removed spyware from this pc and I did not knowingly authorize this account nor have I heard of ASP.NET prior to this. I really want to delete this account but I am more courious as to how it got there. I am your everyday home pc user with limited knowledge of much more that the color of my computer. Please advise. Thank you.
Oh yeah -- the ASP account only shows when I go to the start/run and access user accounts that way -- to access user accounts through control panel does not show the asp.net account.
thank you

A vulnerability in fully patched versions of Internet Explorer allows attackers to steal login credentials and inject malicious content into users' browsing sessions. Microsoft officials said they're working on a fix for the bug, which works successfully on IE 11 running on both Windows 7 and 8.1.
The vulnerability is known as a universal cross-site scripting (XSS) bug. It allows attackers to bypass the same origin policy, a crucially important principle in Web application models that prevents one site from accessing or modifying browser cookies or other content set by any other site. A proof-of-concept exploit published in the past few days shows how websites can violate this rule when people use supported versions Internet Explorer running the latest patches to visit maliciously crafted pages.
To demonstrate the attack, the demo injects the words "Hacked by Deusen" into the website of the Daily Mail. But it also could have stolen HTML-based data the news site, or any other website, stores on visitors' computers. That means it would be trivial for attackers to use it to steal authentication cookies many websites use to grant access to user accounts once a visitor has entered a user name and password. Once in possession of the cookie, an attacker could access the same restricted areas normally available only to the victim, including those with credit card data, browsing histories, and other confidential data. Phishers could also exploit the bug to trick people into div... Read more

Answer:Serious bug in fully patched Internet Explorer puts user credentials at risk

The article doesn't make any sense.  It starts of by talking about a vulnerability in Internet Explorer, then talks about websites doing something with cookies, and then the exploit is "proven" by hacking some website.

Greetings,

When starting programs IE 6.0, 'help and support' and trying to use 'user groups' and 'system restore' the applications all encounter a problem. All of the error reports refer to "ModName: mshtnl.dll".

This problem first began after using system restore to go back to earlier settings. [This was done because of problems of the internet connection always taking numerous times to dialup the ISP, when usually it was done on first go]. After going back to earlier setting all was okay until windows installed automatic updates and automatically reset the computer and thats when mshtml.dll errors began.

To try to fix these problems, I have already done a antivirus and adaware scan. Installed and ran registry fixers. The same problem occurs in XP safe mode. This has done nothing to fix the problem. Apart from problems discussed here all else seems to be functioning fine.

SAMPLE ERROR:
"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"

AppName: iexplore.exe, AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180, ModName: mshtmled.dll, ModVer:6.0.2900.3059, Offset: 00061e69

Thankyou for your ideas and solutions

Hi

Preface - first post, and I am fairly sophisticated computer user.

I double clicked an exe file by mistake the other day and now I have Internet Explorer popping up with random pages every now and then.
I never operate the computer as an administrator unless I have to, and I was operating under normal user credentials when I executed the above mentioned file.
To prevent the problem from occurring I have denied access to <C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe> to the user in question.

I've run full scans with "Spybot Search & Destroy", "Spyare Blaster". Clamwin and Trend Micro HouseCall are running now.
Appreciate I am slightly out of date with malware removal techniques - the last time I had a problem it was 6 years ago and the first two were state-of-the-art methods.

I am usually very well behaved but this time I just had one double click too much!

Kindly advice how to proceed as I am slightly lost.
Thanks

Hi

I'm getting this error message.
I did a google search and found this: You receive a "The User Profile Service failed the logon
But did not help me. I also did a search here and found a few topics with this error message though they didn't solve my problem either, because mine problem seems to be different.

I can login to existing accounts. But I can't login to new ones.
So when I go to the registry editor there's no folder for the new accounts. They just don't exist at all. Only the existing ones.
I create a new user account at the Users menu in Control panel and they show up at login screen. When I click them, it starts the waiting icon saying "Logging in" then after a few seconds, this error message pops up. I can click OK and then it says "logging off" and goes back to the login screen.
I do have access to an administrator account and a standard account, I can log in to both

I don't have any system restore points before this started happening. i'm using ESET Smart Security as my antivirus but I don't think it's causing the problem, I uninstalled it and it didn't work then either so I reinstalled it back.
Please help me what could be wrong?

Question: User Accounts

I have Windows XP, and my computer won't simply switch users anymore. In order to switch users, I have to log off, then log onto another user. Also, whenever I log on after hibernating, the classic screen (requiring password) comes up. It used to go straight to the Welcome Screen with the user icons. I tried to go into my user accounts file and change the settings for "logging on to the computer", however, my mcafee virus scan pops up and states that it has detected a "suspicious script." All I want to do is be able to change the settings for the user accounts, but it does not save. Please advise. Thank you.

Answer:User Accounts

Have you tried making the changes in Safe Mode from the Administrator account?

Keep in mind that to enable the automatic welcome screen, no passwords must be set. This may not be a good idea considering the vulnerability of the OS to malicious code which can easily run under administrative rights if you do not password protect the accounts.

Safe Mode instructions here if you need them: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282866/EN-US/
Also you need to rule out malicious infection as a source of problems. Try running McAfee in Safe Mode.

Also, in normal mode, I'd suggest posting a HijackThis Scanlog from any problematic profile:

Download and install HijackThis using the "self extractor". Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

At present I have two user accounts that I want to make into one.I have tried to alter it but all I can see is an options delete and loose all emails etc. for the other account. Can anyone tell me how I make one simple non log onable account ?Thanks for any help

Answer:User Accounts in XP

This is not too difficult but but requires some patience. It cannot, to my knowledge, be done automatically. Just a few questions though. Do you have e-mails in both User Accounts and if so are you using Outlook Express as your e-mail client?Transferring Data (Files & Folders) is relatively simple. Open Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E Key) and in the left hand pane select C:\Documents & Settings and the folder with your first username. Now go to Tools>Folder Options and on the View Tab select "Show Hidden Files..." and deselect the "Hide File Extensions of known Types"Open another instance of Windows Explorer and as before navigate to your second User Account. Under each of the folders you should see the My Documents Folders. It is simple enough to copy one to the other and consolidate all under one user name.Remember that you may also need to copy over an address book if you use OE, Favorites and possibly desktop icons, but post back with the answer to my first question and we`ll work from there.
