Preferred Solution: fatal system error "AUTOCHK"

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just installed the free version of AVG on a Windows 2000 Professional. Upon finishing, I attmpted to check RoadRunner mail and received an error message that the server could not be connected. So, I rebooted and received an error message on a "blue screen of death" stating "STOP: c0000021a (Fatal System Error) Logon process system terminated unexpectedly with a status number of 0x00000080; and two more hex numbers of zeros. Yesterday, our computer around 6PM got a fake antivirus virus that popped up and installed automatically. I went and removed it off my computer. That one was called "Malware Doctor". Later, about 2 hours later, I got another one that popped up on my task bar called "Antivirus 2010". That one didnt install and I removed it. Today i started up our computer, and I got Antivirus 2010 again. I exited out of it, and removed it. Then I could not access the internet via Google Chrome, so i tried AOL. AOL worked, but it was freezing as always. I decided to restart my modem and my computer.

When I turned it on, It would go past the XP screen and continuously reboot. I then hit F8 many times, and got the menu(not sure what its called) and make it so it would not auto-reboot on system failure. Booting into safe mode doesnt work, or the other start options. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to access the internet/techguy.

I then got this error on a blue screen:

c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status o
f 0xc0000022 (0x00000000, 0x0000000)
The system has been shut down. Click to expand...

I do not have a XP installation disc, or any other windows recovery discs. How may I go about fixing this?

Thanks! You guys are awesome, you helped me tremendously when I had my last virus/PC problem.

Specs:

Windows XP

It has Broadcom PXE something, and every time I try to boot from CD ROM for my windows XP install it goes there and says "Media test failure" "Check cable" Then it goes to the windows loading screen, and it blue screens and says "Fatal System error" Blah blah, windows is shutting down.

I'm trying to reinstall windows, but it isn't working, NOTHING will load when I put it in my CD drive.

No Safe mode doesn't work, nothing on the black and white screen from pressing F8 works, at all.

Broadcom PXE implies it's been trying to boot from a network so you need to go into BIOS to change the boot order to CD drive before you can get your reinstallation going. However, if it got all the way to trying the network boot option, chances are nothing else worked along the way. Restart and tap Delete or Function 2 for BIOS.

Hello all,

This is my first post, I am not very computer literate and I am having a very large problem at the moment with my Windows XP Media Edition, with Microsoft Service Pack 3 installed.
This morning I started my computer and it worked fine initially loading up my desktop background and desktop icons, then the task bar at the bottom turned grey.
Without clicking anything my screen then turned blue and I got the error message that follows:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The WIndows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down

I rebooted about 4 times getting the same error, but on the 5th time it logged on as normal. I was then able to use the computer for about an hour I then turned it off. After rebooting it a few minutes ago the same error has appeared again and have rebooting about 10 times it doesnt seem to be going this time.

On occasions I get a different error which is:

"STOP: c00000135 {Unable To Locate Component}
This application has failed to start because qt-mt.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.

Has anyone got any idea what this is and how to solve it? And if the two errors are related?
Thank you

Haychee

Hello, I am new to this forum and hope you guys can help me out with my issue, any help is appreciated. Now, the problem that I am having is that I am trying to install a RTM version of Windows 7 Ultimate onto my pc, and the installation seems to go well but when it gets to the finalizing stage after I put in my new username and it successfully activates the key, the computer reboots and i get the following error:

Stop: C000021a{Fatal System Error}
The initial session process or system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000001 (0xc0000001 0x0010038c). The system has shut down.

Now what's odd about this whole thing is that I was and am running Windows 7 Build 7100 and did not have any problem installing Build 7100. And I was also able to install the RTM Windows 7 on a laptop with no problem, so I know it's not a problem with the DVD. I only get a problem when I try to install it onto my pc. I have a Gateway FX530S, 2GB of Ram, and am running Windows 7 Build 7100...

Any help will be appreciated. I really want to get the RTM Windows 7 installed because my 7100 Build expires in March.

Thank you in advance

Answer:"Fatal System Error" when installing Windows 7

Are you using separate keys for the two installs? I never enter a key until I see if it is running OK. Just do not enter a key and uncheck the activate while online and you will have 30 days to check the install.

How are you installing the RTM on the desktop--a custom install?

My computer recently crashed; I didn't pay attention to the first message because, like most people, I'm constantly getting an error message of some type so I didn't pay much attention to this one - until the screen requested the installation CD to be run. When I did that, setup began, running through the initial processes until the "installing windows" segment - when I received the following message:

Fatal Error: An error has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing. Setup failed to install the product catalogs. This is a fatal error. The setup log files should contain more information. Press OK to view the setup log file.

Pressing OK, I read:

Fatal Error: One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed. The operation was cancelled by the user.

Pressing OK restarts the system and the process happens all over again. I do have a valid copy of WinNT which was preinsta... Read more

Hello i have a Compaq Computer running off of Windows XP and have recently have had it shut down during use. When it shuts down a blue screen appears saying:

STOP:c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Subsystem system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of (0x75e92439 0x0052f400)
The System has shut down.

Now judging by the first line this doesn't seem good, but i am wondering if there is anyway to fix the problem.(If anyone can identify the problem, and how to fix it) Also i am wondering if it would be "worth it" to fix the problem or should i just buy a whole new Computer System all together.

Alright, so my dad is on my mom's computer and he decides to install another version of Norton AntiVirus (Because for some reason they have this weird case of paranoia were they install a new version of Norton every 3 damn months). So while he's installing it our power goes out for 5 minutes. Good timing eh? Now the computer is connected to an APC that is maxed out because he has way too much stuff connected on it so the battery can't power anything now. But that's not my problem here. Problem is that since the computer abruptly turned off while doing the installation the computer now gives a blue screen with a "Fatal System Error" message.

I took 2 pictures:

When you boot it up it goes through the windows loading screen then gives the blue screen. I even tried booting it into Safe Mode and it still gave the Blue Screen without even taking me to the login screen. It's a Dell Dimension 4550 purchased early 2002.

If anyone can help it will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:"Fatal System Error"

the repair option should repair system files that have become damaged or corrupted. You should not have any data loss from doing a repair. It will repair said damaged files to the state of the version on the cd, so windows updates will be needed to bring the os to current.

I tried copying a fresh version of the file to \Windows\System32. No dice. I tried renaming it all uppercase and then all lowercase. Nothing. I put a copy in the root directory. No effect. I tried everything I could think of, but nothing worked.

Then--doh!--I stopped thrashing and did what I should have done initially: I dug into the Microsoft Knowledge Base and learned about XP's built-in Rebuild command. It can often easily fix "Missing HAL" and similar problems in just a minute or two. If you know about this command and how to use it, you can potentially save yourself hours and hours of manually reinstalling or rebuilding a failed operating system.

I use Windows XP. I boot from my 40gig HD and have an 80gig slave drive. My computer's worked great untill 2 days ago. Now whenever I boot up, it does the usual cd rom and floppy drive noises then it shows a black screen that says "A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL ALT DELETE"

So I CTRL ALT DELETE it and then it tries to boot up and says "Error Reading Operating System". It alternates between these two messages when I reboot

Here's the thing though, After about about 20 minutes messing with the computer (turning it off and on and restarting multiple times), it will finally load windows and work just fine. All my data is on my hard drive and everthing runs smooth. But then it will give me the same errors when I try to boot up the next time.

What can I do?

FYI - I was not able to access your attachment.

Download/install/run <CCleaner> in my Signature. It's free.
Here is a tutorial, if you need it... CCleaner - Delete Junk Files
Sometime when an install fails, parts of the install program get left behind and ends up causing more problems.
CCleaner usually removes these program residuals.
Recommend uninstall the printer software and driver. Running CCleaner, then attempt reinstalling the printer software/driver.

As for your cartridge, last time I had that problem, I found removing the cartridge and reinserting it usually fixed the problem.

I am completely baffled by this as his OS is up to date (win XP Home), he has DX9.0c, the latest game patch installed etc.. game.exe does cause an error in his applications log but the crap it says after doesnt make any sense to me and im not completely dumb with pc's.
2) i have EXACTLY the same HD as him, the Maxtor 6Y080L0 80 GB yet i have noticed that his seems to suffer terrible performance regarding reading and writing speed

I need some help big time!

A Fatal Error in IE has occurred at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM(01)+00010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c

I was on the net yesterday and seems I picked up this horrible virus(above). Now it doesn’t matter what profile I go in(user/guest etc) I have the active desktop recovery icon and then before I can do anything I get "there is a problem with Microsoft windows and it needs to close" If I click on don’t send report or send report, windows closes and I just have a screen with the fatal error message on.

If I don’t select either send report or don’t send then my machine freeze's with the exception of anti virus gold(which incidentally was never installed and only appeared after this virus took hold of my pc). The only anti virus software I have on my machine is AVG which I can just about run but after the search it says it cant find any virus!!!! Check your BIOS for settings on that port you seated that pci card in.

Hey you knowlegable lot, my mate has Comand and Conquer Zero Hour his specs more than cover the minimum for the game ( i even upgraded his ram and graphics card from my spares scattered around)
he has Pentium P4 2.4Ghz, Nvidia FX5700, 512Mb Ram
No internet connection (i do all the updates for him through my pc on a regular basis ;networked
This is gonna be 2 questions :-
1) how come from a fresh install of the game it runs perfectly fine for a few days then all of a sudden if he exits the game it restarts his pc
Then if he trys to run the game again it comes up with a "standard" warning that a "FATAL ERROR" has occured and that the game cannot run due to hardware problems, "The cause of which could be an overheated component or you do not have enough ram in your system or another hardware related problem occured during the initialisation of this game"
I am completely baffled by this as his OS is up to date (win XP Home), he has DX9.0c, the latest game patch installed etc.. game.exe does cause an error in his applications log but the crap it says after doesnt make any sense to me and im not completely dumb with pc's.
2) i have EXACTLY the same HD as him, the Maxtor 6Y080L0 80 GB yet i have noticed that his seems to suffer terrible performance regarding reading and writing speed
for example we both have a dvd RW drive capable of reading normal cds at max of 48X so when we both installed the ZH game i expected at least both our pcs ... Read more

Like the title says. I simply want to set my hard drive to OOBE so that I can install it on my new computer set up, but sysprep has a problem with wevtapi.dll . Here is the error log:

Code:

I do have the full log, so if you think it will help, just tell me and I'll upload it. I have also tried download wevtapi.dll from the net and replacing the original, but that results in instant failure. Also I looked for what process was using wevtapi.dll but I couldn't find anything. So please, if anyone has a solution, I'm dying to use my new computer set up! Thanks!

Answer:Sysprep Fatal Error caused by "wevtapi.dll"

(FYI) I have tried sfc.exe /SCANNOW and it reported no errors.
If anyone has another way to get my system to OOBE or running on a different motherboard (even complicated ones) it would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure you close all unneccessary background programs before playing, and do a spyware check using something like Ad-Aware.

You also might want to try simply restarting the computer.

Wow !
I,m a new member. Guy forum was recommended by a friend. I just read the last post, Great reply. I'm kind of new on pc's. I've learned a little by myself. the problem I have is when I turn on my pc, I get "Extender Fatal Error" invalid or missing resource files in the installation directory. Reinstall Extended Player. My friend told me that this had something to do with a piggyback, from a game or game site and to get with you guy's to remove it. So here I am.

Answer:"Extender Fatal Error"

EXETender is software used with online games from a site named FreeRide Games. Do you play their games? If not, here are instructions for removing the software: http://support.freeridegames.com/questions.php?questionid=77

If this doesn't work, let us know. We can remove the startup for it next:

Press the Windows key + R to open a Run box.
Type in msconfig
Select the Startup tab.
Uncheck the following entry and Exentender won't pop up anymore:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Exetender] "C:\Program Files\Free Ride Games\GPlayer.exe" /runonstartup

I have Windows XP professional installed on the c: drive of my computer and I have Linux Fedora Core 3 on a second hard drive. The dual boot option screen functions fine and I don't suspect that Linux has anything to do with XP's problems, but I suppose I could be wrong. My prime suspect is the Partition Commander software that I recently installed because I have heard that partition managing software is known to cause the same autocheck problems that I have seen.
When XP starts to boot it goes to a light blue screen that reads:

autochk program not found-skipping AUTOCHECK

that lingers for a bit and then a bright blue screen comes up that reads:

Top: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
Teh Session Manager Initialization process terminated unexpectedly with a
status of 0xc000003a (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down

So my approach so far was to boot from the install disk from my XP home edition that came with the Dell computer package (I could not find the install CD for the XP proffessional that is currently installed) and make a repair attempt. Chkdsk found nothing wrong but I ran it anyway to no avail and then I tried using fixboot command and still the same two error screens come up. Also I tried to boot up in safe mode but couldn't. I have most of the drive's data backed up on CD's so reinstallation is an option but I would really like to avoid the time and energy expenditure of locating the XP Pro disk and reloading all of my fi... Answer:"Fatal Error" when booting XP

Hi, I sympathize, recently I worked this out for a client...but, the only thing that did work it out, was a full reinstall. You are in a slight bind> Your Dell XP Home Recovery CD will not want to do anything while XP Pro is installed> it will not run over top of a higher version of Windows.

You should be able to use a format utility to clean the drive, then re-run the Dell disk to restore to factory condition, upgrading to XP Pro is up to you after that.

(I use Active Killdisk, a free utility> Get the Free version here:

http://www.killdisk.com/

OR> If when you installed XP Pro, you opted to format and install XP Pro, then you should be able to boot with the Pro CD and do the Quick format and reinstall...

Make sure your CD drive is the first boot priority device in your BIOS, and with the Pro CD in the tray, SAVE and EXIT the BIOS, the CD should boot the computer for you, follow the prompts when it detects a previous operating system, to delete the partition that holds Windows and to format and reinstall.

Unless others can find a way to repair this error, that's the way I would go.

I worked at it for several hours, did all you did and another whole command type fix that did not change anything...to no avail, but a clean install had it back working in no time.

Hi, I have Bejeweled 2 Deluxe version and it was working perfectly until I ended the game (or at least my father did, could be something he did wrong). Now it shows a Fatal Error.
It seems this error has something to do with a text document found in the Data folder of the Bejeweled 2 Deluxe folder.

Here are screenshots:
This is the first pop up:
After pressing OK, this pops up:
And then after pressing OK again, this pops up:
and then finally it ends and does not start up the game at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this is one of the most addictive games I have ever played and I do not have the disc any more to patch it or anything.

Thanks

EDIT: Fixed! If you look at the first image, you'll see the " ` ". I simply deleted that, because I JUST noticed that the was messing up the pattern and now it works, but there's still some other problems I'm noticing in the game now. It works, great, but it seems to go slower (could be because I'm running more programs at the moment), and/or I noticed the text at the top that says "Welcome (Your Name)", it shows double of the text in a weird way, other than that, the game seems fine. I can live with the Welcome and some other text like that, as it does not seem to affect the game play.

Hi All,

This forum was recommended by a friend for honest and helpful answers. Hope someone can help me. I have only basic/medium computer skills so I have hit a wall with this problem. My laptop is hp and running windows 8.

I have received software from a friend via CD. The software is Trimble Terramodel 10.12 - Software used for surveying and other Civil Engineering functions. When I load the CD, locate the set.exe file, and run it, the installing gets to approx. 45% and then stops and a window displays the message
'Error: - 1603 Fatal error during installation
Consult Windows Installer help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information'

When I type the problem into google I am directed to download this, that, and the other to fix the problem which are obviously fake advertisements.

My question is:
1.) Is the setup file corrupted etc. and beyond repair?
2.) If file can be repaired, can someone with limited computer skills such as myself do this?

Answer:"Error. - 1603 Fatal Error during installation"

Hi pmitch123 and welcome to the forum! First question is this a copy or original CD? If a copy it could very well could be corrupted.

Also, make sure all drivers are up to date including graphics, BIOS too. I would then run a memory test and see how that goes.

You could try installing it in compatibility mode. Right click on the .exe and select "Troubleshoot compatibility".

I see it was made for older OS here: Installing Terramodel 10.12

I just upgraded from Vista Home Premium to Win7 professional x64 hoping to fix the above mentioned problem. After a complete re-install Im getting the same errors.

Im not sure of the proper terminology here, but during startup the computer does a scan of all hardware and "Volume 0" has a "failed" message.

The odd thing is that sometimes after a few restarts and pointless boot menu visits the computer starts up fine.

I tried windows repair feature by booting from the disk, but when I get to the window where i select the operating system to repair, its empty. Drive C, where the operating system is, is not showing.

I have a feeling that the hard drive itself has gone bad and is very unstable. Please let me know if I'm missing something or we just need to get a new HD.

Thank you

Answer:Win7 pro startup error "Boot MGR missing"/"Operating System Not Found

What type of hdd do you have. For example if you have a Seagate drive, there is software you can run to do a diagonostic on the hdd before the operating system boots.
This would be a good idea, especially if you were having same issues when Vista Home Premium was installed first.

Do you have more than one hdd installed. If yes, make sure in BIOS settings, the proper drive is selected for First Boot. And better yet make sure its the only drive attached when booting.

Dear Friends, hope all is well.
When I ran my last sfc /scannow on my Windows Vista Business SPK 2 machine I get these errors that the corrupted file could not be fixed.
I assume these files could be replaced with good ones? The machine doesn't have any obvious problems.
I have Run the standard chkdsk /c: and it ran OK. I assume due to that it would not yield any postive results to run a chkdsk /f or /r?

Would a "Skip the Autochk process" from F8>Advanced options>Skip the Autochk process select Last known good configuration to bypass the scheduled Chkdsk operation (Autochk) and allow you to return to the system. Be a good idea? Not sure of the risks?

What do I know?
Here's the CBS logs in part FYI. Hope you can help or should not be overly concerned?

Hi everyone !
First of all, I'm sorry for my english if there is some mistakes (I'm French), I'll do the best.

In my business, we bought a batch of PCs for deployment. Note, these PCs are equipped with NVMe SSDs. So i prepared a PC to have a deployment image. I started by installing Windows 7 Pro SP1, where I added the necessary drivers, installed a range of software
and configured some options. Note, I have already done the same steps on another type of PC, and the sysprep has worked.
To get back to my problem, I wanted to do a sysprep after preparing this PC. With sysprep, I added an xml file to unattend.
From there, the problems begin. When booting after sysprep, a black screen displays "Autochk program not found" and restarts in a loop. When I do the sysprep without the xml file, everything works. So I look at the xml file.
I tried removing the line-by-line options from the xml file. However, after deleting everything and running the sysprep with an empty xml file, I realize that the problem is still here.

I searched a bit on Google for track resolutions, but anything I tried did not get me anywhere. I saw that it could be the driver NVMe (hotfix Microsoft) that I installed, without success. I also saw that it could be related to the fact that the station
has two disks (1 HDD and 1 NVMe) : the xml file does not specify on which disk is installed Windows. But I dit not find any options in the xml file (with WAIK) which allow to specify w... Read more

I am building a new Image for our desktops. I am making it a universal image for all of our Dell GX pc's. I am using the below info to be able to change the HAL info.
**********************************************************
Hardware Abstraction Layer Boot.ini Menu

The hardware abstraction layer (HAL) interacts directly between the OS and the hardware. Microsoft provides several different HALs depending for different types of architecture. This posses a keen problem when attempting to deploy a single image across several computers.

The best solution I have found for this problem is put of the Vernalex

Since the goal is create a universal image the solution I have chosen is to include all HALs on the machine and using the boot.ini require user interaction to select the appropriate HAL.

Step 1 In order to accomplish this you will need to retrieve several diffferent HALs and the Kernels. These files will then need to be renamed:

halmacpi.dll -> H-AMPS.DLL
ntkrnlmp.exe -> H-AMPS.exe
halapic.dll -> H-AUNI.DLL
ntoskrnl.exe -> H-AUNI.exe
halacpi.dll -> H-ACPI.DLL
ntoskrnl.exe -> H-ACPI.exe
halmps.dll -> H-MPSM.DLL
ntkrnlmp.exe -> H-MPSM.exe
halapic.dll -> H-MPSU.DLL
ntoskrnl.exe -> H-MPSU.exe
hal.dll -> H-STD.DLL
ntoskrnl.exe -> H-STD.exe
Some of these renamed files will use the same original file. They all can be found in the i386 directory of your windows install.

Step 2 Replace your boot.ini... Read more

Hi All;

Please forgive me if I have missed the thread that is going to solve this problem, but I have literally spent this entire day trying to fix it, searching, reading, trying and then repeating the same routine dozens of times. Here is the deal.

As of this morning, my boot times went from about 30 seconds to 3-4 minutes. This is a fresh build (see specs below signature), not a lot installed here and most of the components are new and compatible from the research I have done. System has been up for about 4 days and has been running great. Last night, I had left the computer on (which I usually do not do) as there was 1.5 TB of files being transferred. This morning, it was all done, and I decided to do whatever "Windows Updates" I had not done yet. Did these and decided to give it a restart. As expected, shutdown and restart took a considerable amount of time as "Windows was being configured" with the updates. After that reboot, I checked for updates again, none available and I did another restart. This was my first experience of the 3-4 minute boot. I of course wanted to blame the updates I did, and consequently removed them all. It did not fix the issue. I went through many scenarios and options, and none have resolved the issue. I currently have two choices based on what I have tried and actually makes a difference:
Deal with a VERY long start up time (all runs fine once in Windows)
Get normal boot time, but deal with a delay once windo... Read more

Answer:3 minutes "Windows Starting" delay due to Autochk

Welcome to Sevenforums!

Long boot times after large file transfers are not uncommon. Usually it is Windows re-indexing the changes in the drives and ensuring there are no drive errors. Which is why the Autochk occurs. (This occurs during boot every time anyway, so disabling it is a bad idea)

As for removing the updates, that won't actually assist with the boot times, rather you will continue to fight them as they will re-install after each reboot (depending on your update settings).

Have you tried leaving it alone, then restarting again once the initial boot has finished?

Unless I am missing something that you have pointed out in your post?

So, I hate to admit this, but I have no idea what to do. My other computer (which is rather old, I might say) is having a really nasty problem.

For whatever reason, I let it install SP3. Well, kinda... You see, it got about half way through and then the PC turned off all of a sudden. When I got the chance (after classes) I turned it on like normal and it started to go into a nonstop cycle of screens. I've tried all the safe modes, last working config, and whatnot, but those aren't working.

Does anybody have any ideas on what to do?

Answer:"autochk program not found - skipping AUTOCHECK"

During the series of screens, I can only go as far as the Setup menu.

If I try to let it load normally, it will say ""autochk program not found - skipping AUTOCHECK" can restart th whole thing over again.

Hello,

I need help with this Diskette issue please. "Diskette Drive 0 Seek Failure"
I've had this problem a few times in a couple of years and I have been able to fix the error by pressing F2 and going to the SETUP. And I've done this with no issues. But this time I thought I fixed it but now I get this new error: "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". After I press Ctrl+Alt+Del it takes me back to the same error massage "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". Need help please. This is a Dell Desktop, Windows XP.
Thank you.

Microsoft (R) HTML Application host has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Anyone with a fix? . My appreciations in advance!

Answer:"User Accounts" in Control panel wont Open-Error is "Html application Host Error"

Do you have a recovery restore install disc or partition?
You can try doing a repair or system file check...
Scan For Missing/Corrupt System Files...

Windows XP comes with a wonderful tool called System File Checker (SFC)
Itscans and verifies the versions of all protected system files after you restart your computer...
To Do This:
Click Start menu, and then click the Run icon.
In the small box that Opens, type the three letters: cmd then click the OK button.
In the command prompt window that just opened (a black background and white text), type the following command:
SFC /scannow
And then click OK
You must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to run SFC..
You will need your Windows XP CD during this procedure if SFC needs to get an original file. Please remember that Windows XP can have multiple instances of a .DLL file and remember which version is for which program.
Notes....
I have been asked if it is possible to have a "progress meter" show when SFC runs... This is the registry hack you need. PLEASE do not go messing with your registry if you do NOT know what you are doing!
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

Hi all,

Installed a DVDRW drive but comp crashed when installing some software and it stopped detecting my Primary Master and Slave drives. I've fiddled about with the Master and Slave configs and have managed to get it to detect my HD and DVDROM.

I've unplugged my DVDRW and my small HDD and am trying to get windows to load up.

After using FDISK /MBR an rebooting, I get "Missing Operating System".

Tried installing Windows XP after formatting, it seems to have installed but it's not loading.

Current config:

Slave: Pioneer DVDROM (not the DVDRW)
Master: Seagate 80GB (C: = 15GB) & (D: = 61GB).

D: has files on there that I'd like to recover. Too big to put on floppy.

I've run a search for similar problems and tried some of the solutions but no good. Any ideas? Thanks

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I recently used "disk Sanitizer" on my HP laptop and left if over night to clear, hoping that it wouldn't wipe the whole operating system etc. I woke up to to my laptop saying it was all done, so i rebooted the laptop, and when it came back on an error message appeared saying " Non-system Disk Error" and then wouldn't progress past the black start up screen. Could someone please help as to what this means and how/if there is anyway around this. or is my laptop well and truly broken. Any help would be appreciated as i have no clue what i'm doing. Greetings,

I have been finding these two errors in my log and don't know what action -- if any -- I should be taking to fix. I don't know how serious these are. The information that I find online is not clear to me at all -- sometimes sounds dangerous, sometimes not.

The following error has shown up for about six-months, first sporadically, now usually once per day. Seems to occur after the first time that the computer wakes from sleep-mode.

Code:
Description: The server {E579AB5F-1CC4-44B4-BED9-DE0991FF0623} did not
register with DCOM within the required timeout.
Source: Microsoft-Windows-DistributedCOM
Event ID: 10010

And the following error has shown up since last October. Occurs maybe once every few days with no associated task than I can discover.

Code:

Description: The following fatal alert was received: 40
Source: Schannel
Event ID: 36887
I am especially confused by the information I have found on the last one. Including in this discussion on Sevenforums: Microsoft warns of problems with Schannel security update . I update Windows regularly but don't find the questionable update among my listed updates. And my computer isn't a "server," just a desk-top home work-station running Win-7 Pro, 64-bit.

I've seen one "fix" involving "deleting ciphers:" Microsoft MS14-066: SChannel Security Update Fixes Vulnarabillity, Causes Instability | SensorsTechForum.com But I don't even know what that means, and I probably don'... Read more

Answer:How fatal is "fatal"? -- Two persistent log errors, help please

The first one seem related to VSS - Volume Shadow Copy Service by a search on the ID, so it might affect restore points etc. Can't help more than that, sorry. But in case System Restore would fail if or when you need it sometime, you could be prepared with a System Image Backup using the excellent Macrium Reflect Free for example.

The Schannel errors I get too, but only on some HTTPS sites using Internet Explorer. I've confirmed it with other people using the same sites and they also get these errors when using IE. So I use Firefox mostly now. That's one solution

Hi all,

Sorry to repeat a question I see a lot of instances of, but none of those seem to be addressing my problem correctly.

I have not done anything new to my computer in recent days, so this problem has caught me off guard (I see most instances of this problem come after upgrading to Windows 7, I have had Win 7 installed for a while now).

Here is a summary of my problem:
1) My computer recently got stuck on the "Starting Windows Screen." So I manually held the power button to reboot.
2) On reboot, it said there was a need to run a startup repair, which I did. Everything checked fine, except for the last one which said "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted," which it claimed to have successfully fixed.
3) After rebooting from repair, the system gets stuck on "Starting Windows Screen" for a good 10-15 minutes, after which it runs a registry check. After it completes that I get hopeful -- but the screen then gets stuck on an all black screen with just the mouse cursor and nothing more.
4) Additional note: Attempting to start the computer on "safe mode" leads safe mode startup to become stalled on "DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS"
5) The lastest attempt to repair yielded this message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

Answer:Stuck on "Starting Windows", Repair Shows "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted"

Hi Stan, Hopefully I can help you out....or at least lead you in the right direction. From my experience, the symptoms you are suggesting sound like perhaps a dying Hard drive.

1. Do you have the windows 7 boot disks that came with your computer or when you bought the Operating System? If so, you could try and insert one of those and boot from it, and attempt to repair the installation. (this won't affect your data, only the windows system files).

2. If that doesn't fix it, you could try a fresh reinstall of windows 7, and see if that works.

3. If neither of those work, its likely that because of the fact that when windows is repairing itself, it is generally putting copies of its system files in the same physical location on your disk. Because your disk is obviously not completely dead, ie....its still loading to the windows 7 startup screen, its just copying files to the bad sectors on your hard drive and gets stuck when loading. This is especially my guess because you said Safe mode is having same problems, even after attempting to repair. In the past, I've tried and salvage a disk by reformatting it and only leaving on partitions which do not contain the bad clusters. This takes some time, and some guess work.....and really this is only a "bandaid" fix because once the disk has bad clusters, its only a matter of time before these things give out. You wouldn't want to trust your important data on it anyways....

I hope this leads you in ... Read more

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

The tech guys on that forum were unable to find the source... Read more

Answer:NO DESKTOP after booting up … & SYSTEM RESTORE "Incomplete" … & "Strange" Temp Files

Usually when the machine has a "blank" desktop, the boot/startup process has been interupted or is frozen to before Explorer is launched.

You can launch Explorer manually be navigating C:\Windows and double-clicking "Explorer".

If successful, do the following:

Start>Run>(type) "msconfig" and turn off all non-MS services and all startups.

Then, Start>Run>(type) "cmd", and at the command prompt type "chkdsk /f" and schedule a chkdsk to run on next reboot.

Reboot system and report results.

Hi;
Had a sudden inability to go much further than a third or forth-level download on ANY given webpage and then PC would seize-up, requiring "cont+alt+del" in order to get freed-up. Thought perhaps I picked-up a bug of some sort during a recent google search, and went immediately to Panda and Trendmicro to perform both virus as well as malware scans. While the Panda scan was loading-up, I received the following error message....

... " DoPatch....dll reports error....Error "C:\WINNT\patch.utp"....unreadable or not a patch file..."

Was able to complete both scans. Nothing found other than tracking cookies.

I then did a file serch for the above and located it. It was installed TODAY apparently, and not by me, within minutes of the problem starting.

I'm guessing someone/thing slipped this patch into my WINNT file or modified it while I was doing the google search, so I have included a HJT scan below.

Hope this all makes sense and ties-out to something. Any help would be genuinely appreciated-
thanks

I have been getting these "Bad Pool Header" and "System Service Exception" BSODs for about a day now (the "Bad Pool Header" one tends to pop up more often then the other btw). I ran a registry cleaner which didn't work and ran memtest this morning and it showed that my memory was fine. The BSODs tend to occur more often when I am playing a game or running some program that uses a bit more memory but it also happens when I am just on the internet. On the other hand, last night I did nothing but surf YouTube for 3 hours and didn't get a BSOD at all. However, since then I haven't been able to do anything for more than 10 minutes (without being in safe mode) without it crashing, and this morning it completely froze until I turned it off. Which one should I do? I originally wanted to just do "Return computer to factory condition" but Theog just suggested "Use A System Image Created Earlier." I have no idea what to do. So confusing!

Answer:"Return computer to factory condition" or "Use A System Image Crea..."

Hello M4TE and welcome to Seven Forums. Sorry for the delay in responding but I just came across your question.

Most newer manufactured computers have a hidden recovery partition on the hard drive. The manufacturer provides specific instructions on how to access that partition in case you want to restore your machine to the exact condition it was in when it left the factory. That means you'd have to go through the time consuming process of cleaning out factory bloatware (like free trials of programs you'll never need), installing programs you do need, updating everything, creating your personal settings, etc. Here is a general idea of how to access the hidden recovery partition.

HP Recovery From Partition

Let's say it took you a day or two to set up your machine to your liking using the hidden recovery partition. A System Image is like a snapshot of your entire hard drive. It will include everything from the operating system to all your programs, files, photos, music, all updates ... everything. Most folks keep it on a separate external hard drive. Let's say a week later you get a virus or your machine crashes for some reason. You can use that System Image to return your machine to the exact condition it was in when you made the image. Usually takes about 30 minutes or so and you're back in business. It's a lot faster and more convenient to only worry about a week of updates compared to probably months with the hidden recovery partition. The newer a System Image is the... Read more

Hello sattyaji, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It may still be showing if the system image was created as part of a Windows backup. Using the tutorial below to reset Windows Backup should clear it for you, but you will need to set up your backup again afterwards.

Download SDFix from here and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer

After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.

It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.

Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.

Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

them all to work better together on my wired home network, so I am
upgrading all three to Windows 7.   My two desktops (one is Dimension
XPS 420 and the other is Dimension XPS 430) seem like they will be no
problem to upgrade to Windows 7.   But, this laptop was not listed on
Dell's Windows 7 Compatibility List.   However, the Windows 7 Upgrade
Advisor that I downloaded and ran seemed to say that it was OK to do a
clean install of 32 bit Windows 7 and it only had a few minor concerns,
where it said to check for updated drivers from the manufacturer.   The
laptop originally came with a 100GB hard drive.   For my use, that is
getting very small, so I decided to get the same exact 7200 RPM drive
in the 500 GB size.   This will allow me to do a clean install of the
32 bit Windows 7 OS on the new hard drive and not have to wipe the old
drive to do it.   I can just hold onto the old HD and stick it back in

There are 2 devices in the "Device Manager" that do not have drivers installed.

I just did a clean install of Window 7 SP1 32-bit to a Dell Latitude E6500. I have uploaded all the Windows updates and all seems to be performing well. However, there are two devices in the "device manager" that do not have drivers installed, and I can't determine what the devices are nor how/where to find the drivers for them online or elsewhere. The driverless devices are "Base System Device" and "Broadcom USH". When I look at the properties page of both devices, it says that the Base System Devices location is "PCI bus 3, device 1, function 3", and the Boradcom USH's location as "0000.001a.0002.001.000.000.000.000.000".

The laptop did NOT come with a drivers installation disk.

QUESTION: How can I identify what these devices actually are and, more importantly, how can I obtain the driver for them?

Answer:Can't ID driverless devices "Base System Device" and "Broadcom USH"

Well, as for the second part of your question......... have you tried using windows own driver update utility? Right click on the yellow exclamation point in Device Manager, choose update.

I'm thinking your "boradcom ush" is this, drivers for it are here too, :Broadcom USH - USB\VID_0A5C&PID_5800 - awdit - The driver, software, & hardware database

With EaseUS Backup Tool, I've cloned these two partitions ("System Reserved" and "C") to same-sized partitions on a external HDD ("X" and "Y"). Picture tells it concisely:
How to make drives "X" and "Y" boot-able?

In "Disk Management", I've noticed these partition labels missing:"X" (or "System Reserved") is missing System label,
"Y" (or "OS") is missing Boot, Page File and Crash Dump labels

Thank you!

Answer:Both "System reserved" and "C" partition cloned to external HDD: boot?

You cannot boot Win7 on external HD, unless it is connected via eSATA.

Hello All,

I started a few weeks ago on the PowerShell programing and I got my answer from here only. So am putting up the error that I am getting now to get some help again.

Scenario : I wrote a script that checks a Folder on a server and counts the number of files in it.Then when it finds the resulting number to be more then a specific value(threshold) it sends up a mail to the required alias. To break it all along the portion to send a mail is generated through DBmail using another .PS1 file.

In the PS1 file containing the main checking of number of files I am trying to pass 2 parameters :

1. Folder path on the server
2. the Threshold value of number of files

Now when I created a job to run this powershell script as :

& "C:\PowerShell\Power.PS1" \\XXXX\\c$\Documents and Settings\ABC\Local Settings\Temp 10

IT fails with the error :

A job step received an error at line 1 in a PowerShell script. The corresponding line is '& "C:\PowerShell\Power.ps1" \\XXXX\\c$\Documents and Settings\ABC\Local Settings\Temp 10'. Correct the script and reschedule the job. The error information returned by PowerShell is: 'Cannot convert value "and" to type "System.Int32". Error: "Input string was not in a correct format." '. Process Exit Code -1. The step failed.

I really can not move forward on this.

Please help.

Answer:*RESOLVED* Media Center "Tuner Not Found" error, "Receiver service has stopped"

Okay, I resolved the first two issues, Tuner error and ehrecvr error.It had to do with multiple Admin user accounts on my computer. My computer was originally set up with a user Robert Baker with full privileges as administrator. I then also set up a MediaCenter account with full privilidges. For whatever reason the MediaCenter account has access to EVERY action on the computer except starting the ehrecvr service.1.  First set Media Center Service Launcher to log on at NT Authority    Services > Right-Click Windows Media Center Service Launcher > Properties > Log On tab > Log On As 'This account: ' > Type " NT AUTHORITY/LocalService " > Click Apply > General tab > Start service.2. I then set the Media Center Scheduler Service AND Media Center Receiver Service to log on as my other admin account. Same as above but with other account credentials and started the services.3. Reboot and no ehrecvr errors. Since this was a good sign I tried WMC and was able to set up my TV fine.I STILL, however, get the "Upgrade in progress" message when I open Media Center. Anyone know how to fix that? I've run setup again and can't get rid of it.

I'm trying to install a game that says I need to update my DirectX Libraries (or something of that nature). It gives me a link that directs me to this Microsoft page where I download DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer for 9.0c http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=35

When I download it to the root of my C and run it as an Admin, I get a message stating "An internal system error has occurred" and to refer to the DXError and DirectX Logs.

As I assume you will need them I have attached both logs for your review.

Can anyone tell me what the problem is? I was under the assumption I was already running the most up-to-date Microsoft software (Windows 7 with a Microsoft update just ran about a week ago with a very current display driver on my GeForce 9500 GT).

Thanks

Answer:DirectX Setup Error: "An internal system error has occured."

Do this: click the Start menu, then choose Run. In the box type dxdiag and press Enter on your keyboard.
What version does it say is installed?

The MS page you linked to says this

The DirectX End-User Runtimes installer contains all of the components installed by the Web Installer in a single package and is recommended for those users that do not have an Internet connection during installation.Click to expand...

Seems strange to use an offline package.

I'm running Windows 7 on a DELL XPS. Before this happened a disk scan was running and I reset the computer before it was finished. It restarted the first time, but by the time I got back to the computer it was on the "Strike f1 to retry boot" screen.I've tried turning on CAPS LOCK, NUM LOCK & SCROLL LOCK and hitting ALT - E,F,B, but that did not seem to work. I don't know if I did the combination work or something, but I tried a variety of combos and none of them seemed to work. I also tried reloading the default settings in the Boot options menu and that did not seem to help either. I've read resetting the BIOS is a possible solution, but I'm not sure what the next step is at this point.Any help would be greatly appreciated.* UPDATE: I just ran a diagnostics test and it said Error Code 0141 - No Drive Detected

Answer:Getting "Strike f1 to retry boot" "Error Code 0141 - No Drive Detected"

Its having issues detecting the hard drive. What is the exact make/model number of this computer?Curious as to why you didnt allow it to finish properly? Did it take forever getting hung at a certain point of the scandisk in which you told it to reboot because it was not progressing further? I have a strong feeling you will need to replace the hard drive. The system sensed an issue with the drive before it died and it attempted a scandisk to try to repair, and right now it sounds like the issue with the drive got worse from the point in which the system detected a scandisk was necessary to correct for errors.

Hope this query is in the right section -tried to use my LDS 1881 England Census CDs last night - but having problems with the Viewer.

I have V4 which up to now has worked perfectly - tried to re-install it
and I keep getting "Failed to extract file "Dll_ini" from binary table"
error message.

BUT no problems on my laptap which has the Viewer installed from the
same CD.

Have had a few problems with computer of late - it was in the workshop
3 weeks ago because of some corrupt Windows files - could that be the
problem?

Grateful for any advice, suggestions as to what to do!

I've been having some problems with my computer and I've always somehow managed to work my way around the issues spyware/malware etc. have created but lately it's been getting out of hand.. Some time ago I got a virus or something that made the entire tab under "Processes" dissapear. So I could not see process-names in the task-manager. I have re-installed XP but this problem persists. I have been using a different application to monitor and handle processes.

The problem now is the constant pop-ups generated from this fake anti-virus program calling itself "Anti Virus Pro 2007" or something.. It pops up with fake commercials, and even attach itself into other explorer-windows while I view other pages.

As popups and messageboxes keep popping up, I close them, but after a while windows will open a messagebox telling me "Buffer overrun detected in e:\Windows\system32\explorer.exe" (or \\windows\explorer.exe I don't remember really but you get the idea) and explorer.exe will be terminated, sometimes taking some internet explorer windows along with it, other times explorer.exe just starts up again and all my windows remain.

I used to have Norton but was forced to remove it as it was sucking up all my CPU. It rendered my computer useless, as I mainly use it for gaming.

I've also experienced having the connection between me and my modem broken while beeing on the internet, and I don't know if my computer actually is offline or if -I'm- just... Read more

it's infinite i don't know what to do, i don't have a cd rom, and i can't reinstall my windows from USB because every time i tried it says : "disk error" or "disk read error"
even after i burn it to USB correctly, tried this on other pc and USB can load just fine.
i'm thinking, it's something wrong with my boot system in System Reserved, is there anyway i can do to fix this?

Answer:"Windows Loading Files" infinite loop, Can't Boot USB "disk error"

Hi,

Have you tried changing the boot sequence inside the BIOS?

Normally pressing F2 or F12 on the computer will solve this.

as described in the title when i boot my laptop: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834117780R
i get the "disk read error -> press cntrl alt del to restart" message. I then tried to access the backup partition through f10 only to run into this error "status : 0xc00000e9 Info : an unexpected I/O error has occurred" it seems that it cant communicate with my hard drive.

I read a few other forum posts but didnt see anyone have the 0xc00000e9 error also. Bios boot priorities are in order if that matters.

Is there a fix without having to replace the entire HD and buy a new vista installation(preinstalled w/ no disc in the box).

Im very reluctant to take it to a service center as i can very likely fix it myself (with the help of the friendly people here of course), only problem is im having a little trouble..finding.. my HD in this damn notebook.. heh, ill figure that part out. new to notebook repair.

Thanks in advance. Danny

edit: found the HD, doesnt look like it even uses a cable, just plugs right into what i assume is the mb. dont know if that helps just supplying what i can.

I just resolved an issue I had with the wireless connectivity of my Acer notebook computer and now I am getting strange error messages. When I try (not every instance) to open device manager I will get the message "Failed to open empty document." From there I will occasionally get "Parser" messages that say "Value creation failed at line 843" or "line 422." I read what I could find about these messages and it points to MMC as the cause. How do I go about fixing this annoying problem if anyone knows?

I have upgraded 5 machines and clean installed 3 machines.

Experienced an issue with one machine with continuous corruption problems

After the 3rd attempt I discovered that even with a Clean Install of Win 10 I get unrepairable errors - Sorry I don't have screen captures of the "exact" wording:

Heres what I did to find the issue;

After using command:

sfc /scannow

Windows reports errors which cannot be repaired

Running the following command should repair the issue:

BUT DOESN'T - You get this message:

But after that I can't read my hard disk (WD)in my computer.
It can read in computer management there.

Ways I try:
1)I try to uninstall and reinstalled again,BUT it doesn't work.
2)I try to unchecked the hide folder and device at view.
3)I try to update the software BUT it still disfunction.
4)I try to use disk management and initialized it BUT there appeared CANNOT INITIALIZED Due to I/O device error.

Any solution for me ?

The most usual cause is that the Hard Drive is beginning to fail. Back up your stuff. Go to the website of the manufacturer and test the drive.

Anyone tried deleting a registry key in Windows 7?  Got "access denied" or "Error while deleting key"?
The usual response is, "You need to run regedit as an administrator".  but I *AM* logged in as Administrator, and running regedit as administrator, trying to assign administrator full permissions on that registry key in order to delete it!!
Am I mistaken, or isn't Administrator supposed to be able to administer and control all the settings on the computer, in order to set it up for the "Average Joe" user?
So, under the permissions menu of that key, go to advanced, change the owner from System to Administrator, and try again.  It's no longer saying "access denied", but "Cannot delete xxxxxx. Error while deleting key".

The scenario: Basically, the wireless has stopped working on a laptop. The device does not show up in Device Manager, but is in the registry, so the normal procedure is to delete the registry entry for the device in HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet (and /ControlSet001) /Enum/PCI    ,then attach the device or restart the computer, it finds the "new" hardware and reinstalls it. Easy!...

Not with permission restrictions on the administrator account it's not!  So I need to give myself permission, to give myself permission, to do a simple task like delete a single registry key!  Why, Microsoft, why???!!!  Please just make the Administrator accoun... Read more
