Stand By mode windows XP

Question: Stand By mode windows XP

I am trying to put my pc into stanby mode but I keep getting the following - "The device driver for the 'Generic volume' device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. if the problem persists, you may need to update this driver. I have run msconfig and unticked everthing also tried safe mode but none of these worked. I want to use standby because i have installed wintv pvr usb2. I have not got a clue as to wich drivers it is refering to.

Any help would be much appeciated

Preferred Solution: Stand By mode windows XP

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a T500 laptop which I have installed a fresh copy of Windows XP professional on. All drivers are loaded and when the laptop is left idle, it will go in stand by mode with no problems. After I wake the laptop back up and log back in, the next time the laptop goes into stand by mode it will just hang on the screen "Preparing to Stand by". Eventually (after 30 minutes or so) it will go to stand by, but I have no idea why it is doing this. I have 4 other T500 laptops that I have installed XP on and they all do the same exact thing when entering standby mode for the second time in a session. I've unistalled all applications I've had on the laptops, I've updated all of the hardware drivers, I've updated the BIOS with the latest release. I've installed and uninstalled Lenovo's power manager, and I've tried various power settings. Hibernation mode is turned off (it does the same thing whether it's on or off). Now, these machines shipped with Vista and there are no problems with that...only when XP is installed...reverting back to Vista is not an option. I would very much appreciate ANY suggestions for this problem as it is taking up way too much time to solve and it's driving me crazy! Thanks in advance!!!

Answer:T500 will go in Stand By mode once, but it will hang if it goes on Stand By mode a second time

Yes, I have a T500 with the same problem.  However, the laptop is about 8-months old and always had XP-Pro installed.  The "second standby" problem has only developed in the last 8-weeks.  Prior to that, there was no problem.  I am at a loss too as why it cannot complete a second "standby"..

Until recently, when I put my laptop into stand by mode the modem's ethernet connection would drop. Now, however, it drops for a few seconds and then comes back on. Short of disconnecting the RJ45, can I program the system to drop the ethernet connection, unless an application wants to connect to the Internet? Thanks.

Answer:stand by mode xp

I would just be thankful with what is happening now and leave it alone. Most complaints in that area are centred around the internet connection not coming back when the system comes out of standy - you're one of the lucky ones, and in any case it isn't as though it's doing any harm as it is.

Question: Stand By Mode

I have a brand new Compaq computer running Windows XP with 512MB RAM, 160GB Hard Drive, AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500, Spy wear, Spam Blocker, etc and AT&T DSL 1.5 MB.  I can not get the computer to enter the stand by mode either manually or using a screen saver and time settings; the screen goes off momentarily then turns back on and the computer never stands by.  The Best Buy store where I bought it and had them install the softwear and set it up says 50% of computers are incompatible with the Stand By mode so not to worry.  Is this true!?!? Help.

Are you sure its not going into hibernation mode? That is where you would have to hold the power button in for a few seconds to be prompted by the unlock screen rather than stand by where you just hit a button on the keyboard or move the mouse.

one way would be to go into power options via control panel - and set that to goto into standby after a certain time.

others here may know a command/away you can send in a batch following the update

On some hardware, screensavers can interfere with standby mode. As a first step try dsiabling all screensavers and see if that helps.

For the first time in a long while I put my computer in stand-by mode and found that it no longer worked properly. When I moved my mouse to bring my computer back to life I saw a blank screen with a message revolving around all 4 corners of the screen telling me to "check my display settings". To get going again I had to perform an illegal shutdown and reboot. Going to my display settings I did not see anything relating to stand-by mode. This problem started before I installed SP2 so that could not be the cause. If anyone knows how I could get my stand-by mode to work properly again your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Alan

Answer:Stuck in Stand-BY Mode

YOu probably have a LCD screen. Your resolution and refresh rate should be set according to the max / native resolution. What is the size of your monitor.

If it is a CRT, then your video card is not sending the proper signal to 'wake it up'.

hi all!
this is my first post.
i have an hp desktop and just had my motherboard replaced with an ami brand mobo.
my keyboard sleep button no longer functions---ok, fine. but even going to start>turn off computer>standby would put mouse keyboard, and monitor to sleep, but computer stayed on (power button lit, fans, hd sounds). I messed further with some settings and was able to get the thing to "seem" to power down, but instead of the power button turning orange/yellow (standby), it now slowly blinks blue. also the ethernet port in rear stays lit (green) with the rapid yellow blinks of data activity (?). also, mouse and keyboard will NOT bring pc out of this mode, it requires pressing the power button.
I suppose i could learn to live with this quirk (if it truly is in standby mode), i'm just afraid that it's not in a low-power state.
Sorry about the longwindedness of this post.
Thanks for any help---
DZ

I have an emachine and the last couple of days the computer was fine all of a sudden last night the computer keeps going into stand-by mode. Now it happens at random and how long I can stay on the computer changes could be 45 minutes could be a minutes or right before I get to enter my passwaord to go to the desktop. What is the cause of this problem? How do I fix it? and I do not know anything about Bios so. They only thing I have done is checked the power settings in the control panel and they are all set to never. and I have no virus because I have ran a complete scan and nothing was detected.

Answer:Computer keeps going into Stand-By mode. HELP?

This is most likely a hardware problem, emachines are notorious for power supply failure but it could also be a bad video card or motherboard problem.

For some reason whenever I try to start back up after stand by, my CU can't recover fully. I will move the mouse and the green light turns on and the CU starts up, but the monitor stays off (that little monitor status box keeps moving down the screen) and I cannot get it to recover fully.

It used to work until somehow now it just doesn't wanna wake up.

Is there a setting that somehow changed?

Thanks.

Answer:Can't recover from stand by mode...

Right click an empty spot on the desktop and select properties.
In the box, click on the screen saver tab then the Power button.
What does it say under "turn off monitor"? It sounds like the monitor is turning off rather than hibernating.

Hi I have a question.. hope you can help.

When I press a key on the keyboard to wake up the system, which is in the stand by mode, the cooler starts working, and..that's about it. The screen is either black, or only the wallpaper is displayed.. no icons, cursor is frozen, or there's no cursor at all. I can't restart, so I always turn the system off.

Does anybody know what's happening here? I searched the net about this issue and found nothing.. Microsoft support pages are full of advices about the stand by mode, but this problem was never mentioned.

I would appreciate any advice.. Thanx in advance

Regards,
Aasca

The Windows Debugging Tools aren't able to access symbols for your operating system files (in particular NTOSKRNL.EXE / NTKRNLMP.EXE / NTKRNLPA.EXE / NTKRPAMP.EXE) from the Microsoft Symbol Server - so that makes debugging them difficult if not impossible.

Please do the following:
- activate/validate the Windows installation at Genuine Microsoft Software
- run sfc.exe /scannow to replace any problem files
- open a support incident with Microsoft to see if they can fix the missing symbols issue ( Windows 7 Solution Center )
- If that doesn't fix it, then wipe the hard drive and reinstall Windows
- don't use "leaked"/torrent builds

This error is on a IBM laptop T20. SMS virtual keyboard is preventing machine from entering stand-by. Please close all app. and try again. If problem persist update driver.

Okay we undated the driver, still error.

Disabled the SMS virtual keyboard driver by changing the file name from a .sys to .old (This was a suggestion from the IBM web site)

The error then read that is was the other keyboard preventing the stand-by mode.

So went in and disabled the SMS virtual keyboard and mouse and then the stand-by mode freezes up and it is necessary to reboot.

Then went in and uninstalled the SMS virtual keyboard and mouse and it still freezes up.

I disabled the accessibility for handicap. Still no help.

Now I am really not sure what else to do.

Sometimes when I am online a new explorer screen opens redirecting me to some other site, it has some musuem art type picture and will say that it is redirecting me here or there, it changes. I always close it before it goes any farther.

The screen looks exactly the same while on stand-by mode vs the phone being turned OFF.
Would getting a screen saver be the answer?
Are there other ways I can tell if phone is turned OFF vs being on STAND_BY?

Answer:How do I make the screen look different in stand-by mode vs OFF?

There are no screen savers for the phone. Keeping the screen on all the time would simply run the battery down very fast.
The only way to tell if you have a phone without "glance" (you'll know if you have it), is to tap the power button. If the screen comes on immediately, it's on. If it vibrates quickly, then it was off and is about to turn on.

Hi Everyone!

Question regarding the Sllep feature settings on my computer. When my computer goes into Sleep mode, I cannot get it to come of it regardless of what I try unless I manually press the button on the front of the computer. Before it used to work with me depressing on the keyboard keys or moving my mouse. Is this a Standby or Hibernate feature?

Is this an option that may have been changed? Is there something I can do to correct this?

I am running Windows XP.

OS: XP Service Pack 2

Hi all. My computer recently developed a new problem concerning shutting it down to 'Stand By' mode. Every time I shut down and click on 'Stand By', the computer does not shut down temporarily like it used to. Instead, clicking on Stand By will shut the screen off for about a second and then the computer restarts showing the XP Log-In screen. Before a message would appear on this Log-In screen stating that other people were logged in to this computer (I do have 3 user accounts on the computer but I only use one), now no message is displayed. Even clicking on Turn off computer > Stand By (on the Log-In screen), returns me to the Log-In screen. My computer no longer wants to Shut Down to Stand By mode. This may be an easy fix - I'm not sure, but it's extremely frustrating. Does anyone know how to fix this so that the computer actually shuts down to Stand By mode like it's supposed to?

Thanks:)

Answer:XP Computer won't shut down to 'Stand By' mode.

Hi There,

Please try this workaround (you will need your Windows? XP SP2 CD).

(In the event that you do not have a Windows? XP CD with SP2, you will need to 'borrow' one from a friend or colleague, as the manufacturer's "Recovery Discs" will not work in this instance.)

Insert the Windows? XP CD in your drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting.)

Go Start > Run ...in the box type in sfc /scannow ?please take note of the space between the sfc and the /.

This is the System File Checker...it will scan all the Windows? core system files to ensure that they are in their respective correct places, and if not replace them from the CD.

During the scan you may be asked to Insert the CD, if this happens just go retry and let it do its thing.

One important point: While sfc is running, it is not advisable to do any other work, or have any browsers/programs running on the computer, until the scan is complete. (This process will generally take around 45-65 minutes to complete).

Once finished, remove the CD and reboot your machine...all should be "Normal" (hopefully).

Please post back with the result, or if there are any further queries/concerns.

Kind Regards,

It does not happen after restarting restarting or turning on the PC. I have already tested the RAM and Hard Drives. Updating to Win 8.1 and then 10 did not change the problem or the way it happens. Since it might be a driver problem, I have tried to play a little bit with Driver Verifier but the drivers are so many that I was not able to identify only one and then I stopped because it was really too time consuming. I updated all thedrivers manually from the Control Panel, but it did not change anything. For the rest the computer is fine, I sent it to the ASUS Service when was still under warranty and they replaced RAM, HD, DVD-ROM, but not the 24 Gb SSD. It also came back with a clean Windows 8 but it had the same problem after installing just Avast, Chrome and Mozilla (I have already uninstalled Avast and no improvements). Here the information you need:

Answer:BSOD after Stand-By or Sleep Mode

This last BSOD seems to be related to "dxgmms2.sys" which belongs to Microsoft, according to the list of drivers in the Driver Verifier. How is it possible? However this would explain why the system has been unstable from the very beginning.

Hi guys, so I'm new to this technology and I'm not quite sure what's wrong. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me. I own a Yoga 13 that I recently bought refurbished from Office Depot. The manufacturing date is 1/26/13.My problems: -I have Internet Explorer 11. When I try to play a video on youtube, a message pops up on the video saying "Video is Currently Unavailable". If i click the video before the message pops up, the video sometimes plays, but other times the video will not play completely. I don't know if the clicking has anything to do with it though. I believe Java Script and Adobe Flash Player are enabled. -In Chrome- There are no problems when I am in laptop mode, but when the screen rotates past 180 degrees the video that I am playing starts to get finicky or static-y. -I have Chrome set as my default browser, and when I use it in desktop mode, the resolution of the browser gets significantly lower as well. -Chrome also gets pretty laggy when I'm using it in stand or tablet mode. I am aware that Chrome's touch screen capabilities are not the same as IE's. There is a 1-2 second lag when I'm scrolling in tablet mode.

Answer:Problems With Video/Stand Mode

It may get laggy in stand mode because of DPTF. Some kind of throttling to optimize power usage. You can disable it in the BIOS I think at the expense of battery life.

Hello. I have a security question. But it might constitute a breach of the forum rules. Can someone direct me to info about the following situation?:

While at a hotel, I left my computer on stand-by overnight. When I got back on the next morning I was linked to a network called hpsetup (device to device ad-hoc). I have been able to remove the network profile. Is it possible for someone to have linked to my laptop while the laptop is in standby mode, even if I have the Intel Wireless manager firewalled and have a Norton firewall?

From what I've read, hpsetup is probably a printer in the vicinity, but it was linked to my computer via the wireless network. I am concerned about my computer security and hope someone can direct me to a resource about this if this issue can't be discussed on the forum.

Thank you.

I have a Yoga 13 (original model, not a Yoga 2) which will not go to sleep after inactivity when it's in stand mode. It also seems like the screensaver won't trigger either. I had the laptop on my nightstand last night and the screen stayed on all night even though nothing was running on it. It does not do this if I have it in its tent or normal laptop orientations. Has anybody seen anything similar? Any ideas as to why this might be happening? Thanks!

When I accidently pressed the Stand-by option in the task manager I noticed that, once I got out of Stand-by mode, it redects the network again, why is this? Not to mention that it also forgot most of my Mozilla Firefox settings (even though that program was not open at that time). Even my favourites. Could this be the cause of the stand-by mode?

Everything was working fine until yesterday when I turned my laptop it said "low battery , switch to AC power", but my laptop always stays plugged in, I rarely use battery life. Now every 5 to 20 minutes or so , it will warn me about low battery ( even when I use AC power) and hibernate immediately. I went to power options and I unchecked hibernation mode, now it goes on stand by mode instead. Same problem. The ac icon on my desktop tray will appear, then turn into battery icon ( `100%) then go to on stand by mode. Next, I took battery out and tried to run on AC power only, but again, it went to stand by mode at start up. I don't know what is wrong all of a sudden?

Answer:Computer keeps on going to hibernate/stand by mode?

One thing that is popular with HP is the DC jack which the adapter plugs into, but you clam it's charging (hence the 100%). How old is the computer? Also have you checked that the fans are running and the computer isn't overheating?

For some reason, my stand-by/sleep mode is disabled. I cannot figure out how to re-enable it. I tried going to control panel > power options but this seems to be run by IBM and not Windows. None of the options it gives allow it to be re-enabled and i don't remember doing anything in particular to disable it in the first place. I have an IBM and it seems to take responsibilty over Windows for multiple tasks, such as power management, internet connection, etc.

Answer:Disabled Sleep/Stand-By Mode

Hold the blue [Fn] button in the lower left corner of the screen and try re-activating sleep from there.

I think its either [Fn] + [F7] or [F4] or [F3], might be another key too, but i think all IBM thinkpads are essentially the same

I always tell my laptop to hibernate using the power button, but how does that differ from using Start > Shut Down > Stand By ?

Answer:What is the difference between hibernation mode and stand by?

This is easily answered

The standby mode is one that leaves your laptop on my dear friend but saving a little of battery life. The hibernation mode is a shut down mode that saves your settings and resumes your windows directly when you push the power button again

Hi there,

I've been Googling without any real luck yet. Perhaps someone here knows a solution.

Whenever a user is logged on and one would select 'Switch User', the screen fades out and the monitor goes into stand-by mode. The system however remains powered on and is accessible through the network etc.

Currently I'm using the integrated Radeon HD3200 IGP (a seperate videocard will come later) which is connected using a VGA D-SUB cable. The problem hasn't been there since the installation of Vista (which is +/- 2 months ago). The initial graphics driver was Catalyst 9.4. When the problem started to occur, I've updated the Catalyst driver to 9.5, but the problem remains.

Since that time, no major things have happened on the system.

When the monitor goes to stand-by, the system (desktop session) becomes useless and I need to hard powerdown the system and let it boot again. Sometimes when I log in again, I receive a balloon telling me that the graphics driver has been restarted; ATIKMDIAG (I believe).

What I haven't tried yet is to uninstall the Catalyst driver entirely and then re-install it. Might this help? (note that I perform an update from 9.4 to 9.5)

On my other PC the when it is started up no display appears on monitor. It stays in Stand-By Mode so it would appear that no signal is getting there or being received correctly. Have tried PC on 2 working monitors and no joy. Have also tried changing AGP Graphics card and still no joy. I now think this is a MB fault but before I rush out and buy one I am asking your advice and opinions.Lights on PC seem to power up as normal.

Do you have on board graphics? If so, go into bios and switch to that.Or have a look in the bios and see what is there. Also make sure that the graphics cards are fully seated.

Hi all,

It looks like it's a driver issue, but updating all my drivers with Dell Utility and Intel Driver Update Utility didn't fix the problem.

Can anyone please help me?
Thx

Answer:Stand-by mode gone from Dell Latitude E5550

Have you updated your video driver lately.  Sleep seems to be involved with that driver so perhaps checking to see if an update is available or uninstall and let the system reinstall.
If you go all the way back to a Basic Microsoft video driver, it will not have sleep options either.
Do you have alternate power schemes available you could try?

Welcome to the Forums.

Can you try to:
1. Press the Signal Source Choice on the right side and observe if there's a prompt on the screen
2. If you use a flashlight, can you see something in the background?

If you see nothing, there's probably something wrong with the screen or PCB board. Have you tried to contact lenovo for service? (if you're still under warranty, they'll most likely send somebody over).

3. If you hear that Windows is starting on the background, check if you have an HDMI out at the back and try to connect an external display.

Answer:Computer locks up (freezes) when going into Stand By mode

I would try testing it under a "clean boot" configuration, and if the problem doesn't occur there, try to narrow it to one of the disabled items.

Does the hang occur before it actually gets into standby, or when trying to resume?

There is a long list of "standby hangs" articles here, most if not all having to do with the "resume" part:

I'm starting to wonder, if the keyboard is supposed to lock when in stand mode. There is no sensor of any kind in the device manager. Lenovo wanted me to pay their software support to reload the correct driver package, but looking at the laptop build, it's designed to keep the keys off the surface, when sitting on a table. Having it on your lap  in stand mode is a different story. The keyboard stays active and things go haywire. Before I send it back, only to discover that this is a design flaw, can someone who owns this laptop please tell me if the keyboard should lock when in stand mode? Thanks very much for your help! Alternatively, is there a way to turn the keyboard off mannually? It's possible with the touchpad. Edited to add: it's supposed to lock. Office Depot had a model out on the shelf, and it works great on theirs. I wonder what could be missing. I bought the "Signature Edition" from the Microsoft store, and wonder if they wiped something important along with the bloatware. Can anyone tell me, what driver is needed for this funktion and what it's named in the device manager?Lenovo support was of no help, unless I wanted to pay for "software support".

Does anyone know anything about this?
I'm a mac guy (what can I say I'm in the entertainment business) but I use my in-laws hp when I'm visiting with them.
After the computer is left for a while it goes into stand-by mode right. When I come to get back on the screen appears but it is squeezed on the left and right side (concave) and the only thing that will correct this is a restart.

Answer:Concave screen appears after stand by mode ?

It's likely a hardware issue with the monitor, especially if it's a CRT monitor. The horizontal amplifier is not getting the power it needs and hence the concave effect.

If you can try a different monitor -- you can definitely rule this in or out.

Well, you can go to the Lan card properties and check the settings in the ?Advanced? tab.
There you will find some settings. Ie. WakeUp on link change or WakeUp using APM mode.
Try to enable these settings and check if the issue occurs again.

I have PC with configuration - Intel Original (945) Motherboard, Intel processor, 512 mb DDR2 RAM.My problem is that, Whenever I bootup my PC, the monitor remains in the standby mode, (light on the 'ON' switch remains yellowe and does not turns green). Help please

Answer:Monitor remains in stand by mode(blank) on booting

Ok, first remove and reconnect the cable from the PC to the monitor and try again.Second switch off PC and open the case, if you have a seperate graphics card carefully remove it, clean the edge connector with a pencil rubber and reseat it. Connect the monitor and try again. If you do not have a seperate graphics card or if the above does not fix it then off with the power again and open the case. Remove and reseat the memory and all plugs you can find and try again. If you are not comfortable doing this get someone to assist. After all the above you might be looking at a corrupt file stopping the PC booting or a hardware fault.

Hi,

after installing the update SP2 for Win XP on my notebook Toshiba Sat. Pro 6100, the following happens:

when the notebook awakes from the stand-by mode, the USB connector is unknown and the communication is lost.

Who knows the answer for this problem?

Answer:Satellite Pro 6100, WXP installing SP2, after stand-by mode the USB is unknown

Hello Erjee,
you just need to install the bios version 1.90 or later.

For other machines with the same problem after installing SP2...
TE2100 v1.60 or later
SATELLITE PRO 6000 v1.60 or later
PORTEGE 4000 v2.10 or later
TECRA 9000 v1.40 or later

My laptop shuts down when i resume it from stand by. I have Satellite 2410-303 windows xp Home Edition Sp-2.

any help?

Answer:My Satellite 2410 shuts down after resuming from “Stand by” mode

Hi,
could it be possible that you have Software installed, that doesn?t support the standby function?
Often Programs like Firewalls or AntiVirus Programs are the reason.

In tablet mode the Yoga 2 Pro is too sensitive. It seems to rotate for the smallest thing. You have to hold it vertically in order to prevent it from rotating. In stand mode, the image is always upside down. I cannot get it rotated, even after pressing the rotate lock button several times. It's fairly difficult to get the screen right.I am a experienced Yoga 13 owner which works perfectly. I am worried about the sensitivity of the Yoga 2 Pro and the fact the image is always upside down in stand mode.I am on a clean factory install, no modified drivers.

Answer:Yoga 2 Pro rotation too sensitive & stand mode not working

Jonas,

My Y2Pro seems to be reacting appropriately to any orientation change I try.
I'm also runnning a standard install without any updated drivers, yet. Only security updates applied from Windows update. What are your machine specs? Mine is the i5/4GB/128GB model.

Have you contacted Service about your experience? It sounds like you may have sensor issues.

Cheers.

My new M400 turned to standby mode while on batteries. Next I've connect DC IN. System indicator DC IN is on green. Then, when I press Power Button, the system indicator DC IN turns to blinking yellow and the M400 stays dead. It doesn't react to any input from the keyboard and the yellow light keep on blinking...

Can anyone help?

Answer:Portege M400: unable to recover from stand by mode

Are you sure that the AC adaptor LED is blinking orange and not the battery LED?
If the battery LED would blink orange so it means that the battery charge is below battery trigger point.

But if it?s a DC in LED so I assume there is an error.
Disconnect the notebook from the AC adaptor and try to remove the battery for a several time.
After this procedure put the battery into the notebook and connect the AC adaptor.
Try to start the notebook.
